And at the point where the road turned into Linking Road, opposite the Aeroplane Garden, stood Vidya Malvade, the Chak De India girl who stole hearts as she wielded a hockey stick in the film made in 2007. Now she displayed similar grit as she declared, “ I am doing this to exp[ress my anger against corruption, and also because I must be part of the change that I want to see.” And the roll call moved on, with HR professional Harish Iyer of Viacom 18, and singer Bhupinder Singh at the Louis Philippe junction. By this time, it was well past 11.30 and the other posts were abandoned, mainly because everyone went back to Juhu for a press conference. Very likely it is the one campaign that will stick for a long time in the minds of people in the Constituency.

Both the AAP and the Congress-NCP are jostling with each other to woo the minorities and the slumdwellers.

The new localities of Jogeshwari, Dindoshi and Goregaon have also altered the equations in Mumbai North-West, the seat held by Gurudas Kamat (Congress). Kamat had won the seat by defeating his nearest Shiv Sena rival Gajanan Kirtikar by 38,387 votes in the 2009 Lok Sabha elections. Last time Shalini Thakare (MNS) and Abu Azmi (SP) had ensured the division of votes. Although this time there is no Thakare in the fray, the MNS has fielded Mahesh Manjrekar and taking him on is the starlet Rakhi Sawant of the Rashtriya Aam Party (RAP). Ironically this time around there is no minority candidate in the fray from this constituency. Kamat may have heaved a sigh of relief, but then he has to contend with another formidable opponent in the form of Mayank Gandhi of the AAP. For sitting Congress MP Priya Dutt from Mumbai North-Central constituency, the contest does not seem to be the cakewalk it was in 2009. Then, Dutt had retained the seat by defeating her nearest BJP rival Mahesh Jethmalani by a whopping margin of 1.74 lakh votes. Though Shilpa Sarpotdar (MNS) had made Dutt’s task all the more easier by splitting the BJP-Sena vote bank. Although there is no MNS in the fray this time, Dutt has an array of 21 formidable opponents that mainly comprise BJP's Poonam Mahajan, AAP's Phiroze Palkhiwala and Farhan Azmi (SP). MUMBAI SOUTH-CENTRAL How the division of the BJPSena votes worked in favour of the Congress-NCP alliance in the 2009 Lok Sabha elections is amply demonstrated in Mumbai SouthCentral Lok Sabha constituency. Sitting Congress MP Eknath Gaikwad who is vying for a hattrick victory, had in 2009, defeated his nearest Sena rival Suresh Gambhir by a margin of 75,706 votes, thanks to the 1.08 lakh votes polled by then MNS candidate Shewta Parulkar who has since joined Sena again. This time around Gaikwad faces multi-cornered challenge from Rahul Shewale (Sena), Aditya Rajan Shirodkar (MNS) and Sundar Balakrishnan of AAP. However the contest here appears to be more between Gaikwad, Shewale and Balakrishnan. Everybody here seems to be vying to woo the slumdwellers of 'Asias largest slum' Dharavi. Besides this, the constituency which largely falls under Mumbai City district, com-

prises two assembly segments of Anushakti Nagar (NCP) and Chembur (Congress) that are in Mumbai Suburban district. In 2009 Assembly elections, the MNS had given a bloody nose to the Sena by bagging the Mahim seat wherein lies the Sena Bhavan at Dadar falls. The total of 14.08 lakh voters, includes 7.73 lakh male, 6.34 female and 20 Other category voters. There are 1,563 polling stations in this constituency of which those in Dharavi, Anushakti and Chembur areas are considered as sensitive booths. In the 2009 Lok Sabha elections, Mumbai South constituency sitting MP Milind Deora (Congress) had defeated his nearest MNS rival Bala Nandgaonkar by a margin of 1.12 lakh votes, relegating Sena candidate Mohan Rawale to the third position with 1.46 lakh votes. This time also Deora faces his arch rival Bala Nandgaonkar. While his other rival of 2009, Meera Sanyal is now a formidable AAP candidate. Considering the fact that the constituency has a sizeable pocket of slumdwellers in Colaba, minority community pockets in Byculla area and the textile mill areas of Mahalaxmi and surroundings, the CPI has fielded Prakash Reddy. The constituency also houses the upmarket localities of Malabar Hill and Worli seaface, home to the rich and powerful. Although there are 20 candidates in the fray here, this time around the main contest is still between Deora and Nandgaonkar, with a challenge being thrown at them by Sena’s Arvind

Sawant and Sanyal. The latter is assiduously wooing the minority and slum pockets. The total voters in this constituency are 14.37 lakhs, of which 8.04 lakh are male, 6.33 lakh female and 15 Other category voters. There are 1,546 polling stations of which those in the Byculla area are considered sensitive. This time around here the decisive factor here will be which way the sizeable Maharashtrian, Gujarathi, Marwai and Jain community voters vote. In 2009 Lok Sabha elections the aggregate polling percentage in this constituency was 40.37 per cent.

BJP plays the ‘Vadra card’ T

HE Vadra issue has emerged during the last few crucial days of the Lok Sabha poll. The BJP has taken it up in right earnest. Robert Vadra, husband of Sonia Gandhi's daughter Priyanka is alleged to have been involved in corrupt land deals and made crores. He has however been completely cleared by the court, but it looks like the taint has remained. The BJP has found in the Vadra case a stronger stick to beat the Congress with. Probably Priyanka prudently kept away from the poll fray. It is being said that Kumar Vishwas, the AAP candidate is making full use of the allegations against Vadra. As per the court findings, Robert Vadra has a clean record and he was evidently not involved in a corrupt case. Once however an allegation of corruption is made, it sticks: a court exoneration does not help much in washing away the corrupt image. People are likely to believe that Vadra has attracted the charges against him because he had all the chance to take advantage of his relation with the ‘remote control’ of the government – Sonia Gandhi. One of the BJP's leaders, Uma Bharti, has said that if the party comes to power, it will put Vadra in jail. Another leader has said cases against him will be reopened. It is a fact that the IAS secretary Mr. Khemka swears he has found many dealings wrong. His signature approving land deals does not appear in any of the files in the case. For his honest stand, it is a well-known fact Khemka was harassed and then transferred. There is little doubt that Vadra's image is far from good. Though the court has cleared him, the BJP's campaign against him has continued and in fact, intensified. It cannot be said that the corrupt charges against Vadra will not affect the chances of Rahul and Sonia Gandhi in Amethi and Rae Bareili. The opposition will seize the opportunity to bring up the Vadra case to the poll scene in both Amethi and Rae Bareili.

NDIA is halfway through the Lok Sabha election process. Two factors have come to the fore so far: caste and money. I am dismayed about the caste. I had imagined that in some 67 years since independence, the nation would have matured enough not to be swayed by baser instincts. Lately, religion has been inducted by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The appeal in the name of religion in the fifties was understandable because the country had been partitioned on the basis of religion in August 1947. The world’s biggest holocaust took place, followed by the exodus of 3.5 crore of people. The exchange of population was fairly rejected by both the Indian National Congress and the Muslim League, the arbiters of the country’s future. First, Mahatma Gandhi and then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru saw to it that religion was not mixed with politics. This worked for a few years. In the sixties the defeat at the hands of the Chinese was the topic of elections. Nehru’s negligence not to prepare the country’s defence had engaged the voters’ attention.

Secularism has a general appeal The seventies saw the domination of autocrat Indira Gandhi who also suspended the constitution and detained one lakh people without trial. Her Congress party was wiped out in the northern India. Her return in 1980 was due to the squabbles in successor Janata Party. It was not her triumph but the rejection of the Janata Party. Thus far the caste played a minor role. Some who highlighted it were generally defeated. Money, of course, has counted from day one. The Election Commission fixed the limit for a candidate’s expenditure at Rs.40 lakh in 1951 when the first general election was held. Now it has been raised to Rs.70 lakh. Still this is far less than what a candidate splurges—an average of Rs.3 crore is spent by a Lok Sabha candidate. Many spend at least triple the amount. Despite the rules the Election Commission has laid down, no candidate has ever been disqualified on the ground of excessive spending. The catch is that political parties are not governed by any law or rule that forces them not to spend more than the ceiling prescribed. In fact, the parties’ dishonesty is the real problem. n the wake of Child Sexual Abuse Awareness, Podar Jumbo Kids, a pre-school in Parel under the Podar Education Network, hosted the book launch of ‘A New Normal’ on April 19, followed by a panel discussion that was aimed at busting the myths in our society surrounding such abuse. The board of panelists was made up of Swati Popat Vats - President of Podar Education Network and Director at Podar Jumbo Kids, Payal Shah Karwa, author of the recently-launched book titled ‘The Bad Touch’, Psychiatrist Dr. Avinash De Souza, senior inspector Shirish Sawant, Pooja Taparia, Founder & Chief of NGO, Arpan, and Persis Sidhva from 'Majlis'. Kiran Manral who is an author and founder of CSAAM, was the moderator. The event which was essentially addressed to parents of children in the age group of 0-7 years, discussed how educating the child about his body and “good touch and bad touch” at an early age is the first and most uneasy step for the parent to take. Each panelist emphasised on the fact that honest and open communication with the child is vital to keep a check on their safety. Taparia said, “Don’t be afraid to ask questions and when they confide in

Peel and dice it and then place it in a clean bowl. l Dice the apple and guavas, split the gooseberries and slice the bananas. Banana Flower salad wiTh TaMarind canola oil dressing ingredients 250g purple banana flower shredded (filaments removed), 100g jaggery, 2 lemons, 2tbsp canola oil, 1tbsp toasted sesame, 50g toasted peanuts, 1tbsp green chillies (chopped), 50g mint leaves, ¼tsp salt Method l Thinly slice the banana flower and set it aside in a bowl. The simple procedure can be performed during surgeries, in order to close incisions without leaving any scars. Cold plasma is an innovative procedure that will prove beneficial for medical as well as cosmetic surgery. During this treatment, certain particles of plasma gas are ionised. This procedure was first invented and tested in Israel. After tests found that it seemed to help people, it started expanding as a treatment. The medical device called IonMed, also developed in Israel, used the procedure to close surgical incisions with less pain and no scars. The

procedure allows you to let go of the old, conventional method of using a needle and thread to close incisions. This also means that post-surgery, pain reduces quite a bit. be performed only by trained professionals. Cold plasma therapy is also poised to help women through caesarean deliveries. Women who undergo these operations are prone to infections and closing their surgical cuts requires expertise and the use of complicated equipment. The cold plasma technique promises to leave women infection-free and without scars. This was proven in a small experiment done by the Israeli organisation developing the treatment. IonMed used their equipment, BioWeld1 (that conducts cold plasma therapy), on 16 women who underwent a caesarean. The therapy closed their skin incisions with minimal pain. After several weeks of the procedure, the company reported that the wounds had healed and the likelihood

of complications and infections was very low. In spite of all its benefits, Indian medical experts are yet to accept it. Dr. Nina Madnani, a consultant dermatologist raises her own concerns. She tells us, “Not many doctors are aware of this therapy yet. It hasn’t crossed all medical expectations and so, it’s too early to accept it.” She adds, “I wouldn't include this procedure in the treatments that we conduct at my clinic, simply because I am not convinced about this process yet.” All in all, if this treatment does gain acceptance in India, it will probably attract several patients. An FIR was on Monday registered against AAP leaders Arvind Kejriwal and Kumar Vishwas and 10 others for allegedly violating the model code of conduct and prohibitory orders. The FIR was lodged at Gauriganj police station in Uttar Pradesh, after authorities reviewed the video of Vishwas' campaign, Circle officer Naveen Kumar Singh said. Polls: Over 800 kgs of explosives; 100 IEDs recovered till now NATION

EW DELHI: Over 800 kg of explosives and 127 improvised bombs have been recovered by security forces from across Naxal violence-hit areas since the Election Commission sounded the poll bugle in the country on March 5. The maximum of these killing traps and deadly ammunition, aimed at security forces and poll officials, have been recovered by the paramilitary CRPF from Left Wing Extremism affected areas of Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra and Odisha. According to an official report, a maximum of 61 Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) were recovered from Bihar, 33 from Jharkhand, 24 from Chhattigarh and nine from Odisha, reports PTI.

The total number of these locally made recovered bombs, which also killed troopers, is 127. 750kgs of explosives was seized from Bihar, 53 kgs from Jharkhand, .5kg from Chhattisgarh and 3.8kgs from Odisha, taking total to 806.92kgs during the period between Mar. 5-April 20. During the same period, 10 IED explosions took place in Bihar, six in Jharkhand and 13 in Chhattisgarh. The maximum casualty for the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), the lead anti-Naxal operations force and the largest security force deployed for polls, took place in the restive Bastar area of Chhattisgarh where 20 personnel were killed while 15 were injured in separate incidents. China new transit hub for Pak operators to smuggle FICN By Ashwini Shrivastava

EW DELHI: In a worrying trend, central intelligence agencies have found that China has emerged as a new transit hub for Pakistan-based operators to circulate fake Indian currency which was also being routed in 'diplomatic bags' to Pakistan High Commission in Colombo and via two leading courier services. "Fake Indian Currency Notes (FICN) are being routed to Pakistan High Commission in Colombo through diplomatic bag. FICN are being routed from Pakistan to India and Nepal via China through FedEx and DHL courier in the form of parcels," according to a report by Economic Intelligence Council (EIC) headed by Finance Minister P. Chidambaram. When contacted by PTI, both the companies denied use of their network for any illegal activity. Pakistan based operators are sending the fake currency by air carriers not only to Nepal and Bangladesh but also routing it via Dubai, Kuala Lampur, Bangkok and Sri Lanka, the report said. These racketeers are reportedly using middle aged and even old Punjabi and Muslim ladies as con-

duits for carrying FICN into India through land border and airport, according to the report.

OUSTON: Over 100 Indian youths -- detained by US authorities for allegedly entering the country illegally to seek asylum -are on a hunger strike. The men, all hailing from Punjab, have been languishing in El Paso Processing Centre in Texas in miserable condition since last year, a non-profit group that has been providing the detainees with legal support told PTI. North American Punjabi Association (NAPA) said it has urged Immigration and Custom Enforcement (ICE) authorities to immediately release the youths, currently on hunger strike. In a statement, the group urged ICE Deputy Assistant Secretary Thomas S. Winkowski to release the men, said Satnam Singh Chahal, executive director, NAPA. Chahal said the ICE is legally bound to release detainees as soon

as they proved their true identities and reasons for seeking asylum in the US. There is no evidence against any of the detainees held since last year, he said. Two hunger strikers were recently hospitalised and many others are in danger, Chahal said, adding that NAPA has learnt that ICE was on the verge of force-feeding striking detainees -- a practice that the United Nations has termed as 'torture'. These youths have been detained indefinitely despite proving their identities and certifying their reasons for entering the US, he said. "Some detainees had been transferred to a barrack called 'LO-AHA', a 5x10 feet room consisting of toilet and bed where normally criminaltype prisoners are detained," Chahal added. The group said it is also seeking action against travel and immigration agents who lured the youths with dreams of settling in the US.

The market opened up with a gap at the 6789 points level. It then turned into a range bound movement until 11.35 a.m. The index then declined marginally and registered the day’s low at the 6786 points level at 11.47 a.m. It then rose and turned into a range bound movement until 2.17 p.m. The index then rose sharply and registered the day’s high at the 6825 points level at 3.06 p.m. and then turned into a range bound movement until closing at the day. The Nifty remained above its previous close throughout the session, moved in a range of 39 points and closed above the psychologically important 6800 points level. Sentiment was bullish and amongst the 50 Nifty stocks 28 were gainers, while 22 were losers.

TECHNICAL ANALYSIS: Volume: Volume (Qty shares) decreased 13.30%. This change is moderate and indicates a moderate participation by investors. BUSINESS BRIEFS Four Cos Line Up Rights Issue Worth Rs 800 Cr

As many as four firms, including private sector lender Lakshmi Vilas Bank and infrastructure major IL&FS Engineering and Construction Company have lined up rights issue worth more than Rs 800 crore. Mirc Electronics, which sells the Onida brand of TVs and drug firm Neuland Laboratories also plans to raise funds by issuing equity shares to existing shareholders. These four firms, which had filed their draft documents with Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) this year, are awaiting market regulator's approval. These companies are collectively planning to garner Rs up to 863 crore through rights issue. In rights issue, shares are issued to the existing investors as per their holding at pre-determined price and ratio.

Petronet Invites Bids To Lease Out LNG Storage Tanks

Petronet LNG Ltd, the nation's biggest importer of liquid natural gas, has invited bids to lease out under-utilised storage tanks at its recently commissioned LNG import facility at Kochi in Kerala. The company operates the 5 million ton-a-year Kochi terminal at a sub-optimal 5 per cent of capacity because of a delay in laying of pipelines connecting the port to consumption centres in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. To make Kochi an economically viable proposition, Petronet has invited bids to lease out two liquefied natural gas (LNG) storage tanks for two years.

The joint venture, in which Hero MotoCorp will hold 55% stake and rest will lie with the Bangladeshi partner, plans to set up a new manufacturing facility which will have an annual capacity of 1.5 lakh units when fully functional by second quarter of 2015-16. CAO Assessing Complaint On Lafarge Suma's Land Deal

The compliance advisor/ombudsman (CAO) is assessing a complaint filed against Lafarge Suma Cement's land acquisition and limestone quarrying operation close to villages of Shella and Tynger in Meghalaya. CAO, an independent recourse mechanism for projects supported by the World Bank Group, said a complaint was filed by a number of individuals in the state on the Indian side of the project in January last year. "CAO found the complaint eligible for further assessment in January 2014 and has begun conversations with the key parties ... An assessment of the case is ongoing," it said.

BRIEFS Remembering the Master

ehru Centre organised the Yuva Kala Mahotsav at their auditorium featuring talented performers. Among the performers were Kuchipudi danseuse Sanskriti Chatterjee and Kathak danseuse Bhakti Deshpande. It is gratifying to note that young talent is given all the encouragement they deserve. Besides the invocation, the mainstay of Sanskriti's performance was the interpretation of the royal lady Satyabhama in the number known as Bhama Kalapam. This number portrayed the various moods of the lady and her intimate relationship with Lord Krishna, the item goes to various stages of expressions and movements pertaining to Bhava Pravesh Daru, Madana Daru and Lekhana or letter writing daru. Another number that featured Krishna again was the Ashtapadi wherein the dancer is depicted as Virahotkantitha and suffers from the pangs of separation and waits anxiously to meet her Lord. Sanskriti was quite at ease enacting the varied 'sancharis'. Blessed with beautiful eyes, Sanskriti is capable of doing wonders as far as expressional dancing is concerned. A composition by Uttukadu Venkatasubbiah, 'Marakatha Manimaya' describes the romantic and playful Krishna and his dance with the Gopis of Vrindavana. Surprisingly, all the gopis think that Krishna is dancing with them and they dance with a lot of joy and happiness. This number concludes with the dance on the rim of the brass plate in which the dancer executes various rhythmic patterns to precision. This number won applause from the audience.

Anita Ratnam presents her new work - CIRCLES OF LOVE (part of Mudra Dance Festival 2014) – focusing on mothers, using ancient and contemporary poetry, spoken word interludes and familiar references from cultural memory to trace the outlines of what it means to be a mother who is eternally fragile and part of a cycle. Anita portrays the woman as a mother, giver of life, psychic gardener, caretaker of lives and terrifying protector. These are some of the character arcs quilted by Anita Ratnam in CIRCLES OF LOVE, a performance that weaves story, diary, movement and life into a living tapestry. As daughter, wife, mother and grandmother, the various shades of maternal joy and grief will be shared in an interdisciplinary performance from 7 pm on April 26 at The Experimental Theatre, The National Centre for the Performing Arts, NCPA Marg, Nariman Point.

‘Doosri Goshta' to release

Music launch this experiment. Kulkarni's 'Rooprangi Jugalbandi' gave the listeners an opportunity to listen to similar sounding ragas like 'Bhoopali' and 'Shudhkalyan' as also 'Yamankalyan'. In a normal concert of instrumental music we get to hear a raga in four stages. The first stage is 'alap' in which the raga is explored with a sense of freedom. The second stage is 'jod' in which there is a rhythmic pulse but no percussion. The third stage is 'gat' in which the percussion steps in. The last stage is 'jhala' which is played at a high speed and is a kind of a crescendo. Instead of sticking to one raga, Rupak kept switching between 'Bhoopali' and 'Shudh Kalyan' and 'Yaman Kalyan'. He was accompanied on the tabla by Thane-based tabla star Mukundraj Deo as also by Ahmedabadbased tabla artiste Prithviraj Mishra.

Director Chandrakant Kulkarni, and writers Ajit Dalvi and Prashant Dalvi are all set to hit the silver screen once again with 'Doosari Goshta', their second film based on the political graph of a leader after blockbluster 'Aajacha Divas Majha' is ready for release in 172 theatres across the Maharashtra on May 1. The film is directed by Chandrakant Kulkarni, while Ajit and Prashant Dalvi have shouldered the responsibility of the story, screenplay and dialogue. It is presented by Jigisha Creations and has been produced by Dr. Shailaja Gaikwad, Manjiri Hete and Prasad Mahadkar of 'Jeevangani'. The story revolves around a young boy from a lower caste who doesn't have an option but to resort to petty thefts to make both ends meet after he loses his father at an early age.

upak Kulkarni is a front ranking bansuri players of the country today. His stature as a bansuri player was acknowledged by the All India Radio last year when he was awarded the most sought after top grade by the central audition board based in Delhi. Kulkarni has been in the field of classical music for well over three decades. He has been a soloist and also figured in fusion experiments with eminent artistes like violinist Kala Ramnath and sitarist Niladri Kumar. The programme at Thane was in celebration of his completion of 35 years as a guru of the bansuri. His disciples like Varad Kathapur and Nilesh have already made a name for themselves as performing artistes. In this programme, Kulkarni presented music of a different kind. The title of the concert was 'Rooprangi Jugalbandi'. There was a clear connection with the name of the artiste which is 'Rupak'. As per this concept, Rupak engaged himself in a duet with his own self. The Mewati gharana maestro and renowned singer Jasraj had devised a concert format called 'Jasrangi Jugalbandi' about seven years ago. In this concert format, a male and female singer perform at the same time in their respective pitches two different ragas. Not all ragas could be sung in this concert format. Jasraj had identified a few ragas which could be thus presented. Singers Ashwini Bhide and Sanjeev Abhyankar have presented a number of such concerts. Later on, junior singers like Ankita Joshi and Krishna Bongane have repeated

ARGAO: First-timers Bengaluru FC wrote a new chapter in Indian football by clinching the I-League title in their debut season courtesy a 4-2 away win over Dempo Sports Club here, with captain Sunil Chhetri fittingly netting the final goal. Needing a win to snatch the title ahead of other established teams, Bengaluru led from start to finish. They scored through Sean Rooney (2nd), Robin Singh (56th), John Menyongar (79th) and captain Sunil Chhetri (90+7). Dempo reduced the margin through Roberto Silva (82nd) and substitute Romeo Fernandes (89th). After Sean Rooney had given them a dream start in the second minute, there was no looking back. Dempo threatened a brief fightback but that was not enough to thwart Bengaluru. The win helped the Southern club accumulate 44 points and take an unassailable lead with one round still to be played. Bengaluru needed a win from any of their last two matches to emerge triumphant but in the end it was clear that they would not leave anything to chance. This came after a his 95-run onslaught against Chennai Super Kings in his team's tournament-opener. "You don't expect to make two big scores like that in a row and I have had a bit of luck as well. I was disillusioned with what happened in WC meeting: Manohar

MUMBAI: Former BCCI chief Shashank Manohar is "disillusioned" with the proceedings of the Board's Emergent Working Committee meeting which he had attended as a representative of Vidarbha Cricket Association. "I can't disclose what happened at the meeting. All I can say is I was disillusioned with the happenings. I had gone there with the purpose of cleaning up the image of the Board in public domain, but I was disillusioned," the 57-year-old Nagpur-based lawyer told PTI. Manohar was outvoted 14-1 at the meeting when hand count was taken for the nomination of R G Raghavan, ex-CBI director, as one of the three members of the panel that was formed (former cricketer Ravi Shastri and former chief justice of Kolatta High Court R N Patel being the others) by the Working Committee to probe into the spot-fixing and betting scandal in the Indian Premier League as per the Supreme Court's directive. Manohar had kept himself out of the BCCI matters after his term ended in 2011 and was succeeded by Srinivasan before attending his first meeting of the Board. The former BCCI chief had also opposed the name of Shastri because of conflict of interest as he's a Boardcontracted TV commentator and IPL Governing Council member. Prior to attending the meeting Manohar had lashed out at N Srinivasan, who has been forced to step aside as the Board president, saying the Tamil Nadu strongman was "shamelessly and stubbornly" sticking to his post. Gurunath Meiyappan, son-in-law of Srinivasan and alleged former team principal of IPL franchise Chennai Super Kings, owned by India Cements in which Srinivasan is the MD cum Vice Chairman, had been named as one of the accused in the scandal by Mumbai police. On April 16, the Supreme Court, at its last hearing of the case, said Srinivasan's name was the 13th in the enclosed list submitted along with its report by the apex-court appointed Justice Mudgal Committee, which had probed the scam. The names of Shastri, Raghavan and Patel would be submitted for approval of the Supreme Court which is hearing the IPL scandal, with the next hearing scheduled today. The SC had directed the BCCI at the last hearing on April 16 to suggest names of persons who will conduct a "fair probe" into the IPL 6 spot-fixing and betting scandal. The apex court is expected to consider the suggestion by the BCCI and pass orders on the future course of the probe.

UMBAI: Former BCCI chief Sharad Pawar wants Justice J N Patel, who is part of a three-man probe panel set up by the Board to investigate the IPL corruption scandal, to come clean on his reported links with the body's interim President Shivlal Yadav. He also deprecated the presence of former India captain Ravi Shastri on the inquiry committee, citing conflict of interest. "I think Patel should definitely disclose if he is related to the BCCI's interim president Shivlal Yadav. If not, then BCCI should clarify and should not allow these type of discussions," Pawar told PTI in an interview. The names of the former Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court, Shastri and ex-CBI director R K Raghavan were approved by the Board members at an emergent working committee meeting here yesterday. Their names would be submitted for approval of the Supreme Court which is hearing the the IPL scandal, with the next hearing scheduled today. Pawar called Manohar him a good administrator. "Manohar is a good administrator. He has no personal interest. His genuine interest is in the game. I accept that whatever he says will always be in the interest of the game. Manohar's performance as an administrator was in a very straight forward and transparent manner," he said. Though bedevilled with myriad problems since its inception in 2008 when he was the BCCI chief, Pawar was upbeat about the future of the cash-rich IPL. "I think IPL is doing well. I have not been able to follow it because of these elections. IPL is a product developed by India, by the BCCI when I was its presi-

Harendra will join the training camp of the team on April 25. "The appointment of Harendra Singh is in line with our efforts to prepare Junior Hockey Men team for the 2016 World Cup to be hosted in India," Hockey India Secretary Narinder Batra said. "His experience as a coach and player will add huge value to the camp which is scheduled to start end of this month and we are pleased to have him on board. We are sure that with Harendra Singh coming in to support the initiative towards ensuring a full and strong team for the World Cup will be achieved. "Harendra Singh had earlier coached national teams

for several major events and we welcome him in his new role as that of the Junior Men Hockey Team's coach and wish him all the best for the future and for the upcoming Junior Men World Cup," he added. BARBADOS: West Indies pacer Kemar Roach has escaped with minor injury following a nasty car crash on a rain-lashed Bridgetown road. Roach was reportedly speeding away when his BMW car flipped over several times before landing in the 3Ws park. The 25-yearold suffered a head injury and was taken to hospital, the Barbados Today online newspaper claimed. Roach took to Twitter a few hours later after the accident to reveal that he was recovering and in good health. "Sorry To Scare My Friends, Family And Fans But I'm Straight! Chitra, Uma bow out of World Ladies Snooker

LEEDS (UK): After a fine run in the first three days of the WLBSA event here, Indian cueists Chitra Magimairaj and Umadevi Nagraj bowed out of ladies snooker. Chitra, who ended in the sixth position, failed to cross the league-stage hurdle for the first time. She had earlier made it to the knock-out stages in her previous 11 outings. Chitra, 41, lost to Jaigue Ifwan 2-0, Wendy Jans (IBSF champion) 1-1 and Anita Maflin 2-0 on a disappointing day of snooker. Meanwhile Umadevi lost to Ng on Yee (two-times IBSF champ) 2-0, Anna Prisazhnuk 2-0, Jessica Woods 2-0. Irina Gorbataya 1-1 and winning against Natalia Kazlouskata 2-0.
