f professed goodwill were all that is required for an election victory, it would seem that the Aam Aadmi Party has already taken Mumbai. Yesterday, on the second last day of campaigning in the North West Constituency, comprising Andheri, Jogeshwari, Oshiwara and Goregaon, a large number of celebs turned out to raise the temperature on an already blistering day and BMC workers at JVPD sporting AAP caps.
they were at it for more than two hours in the hot sub, cajoling, responding, urging people to go out and vote “for change”. They stood on the road dividers mostly, at traffic signals, and waved their signs, sacrificing their identities for a day to submerge them into that of the man on the street. So that it was easy to read and remember – “I am not --------. I am Aam Aadmi'. This unique manifestation of popular mood took place from the Juhu Circle Continued on pg 2 «

OPINIONS About AAP
Celebs turn aam aadmi
Mona Ambegaonkar I support AAP because it is the only party that clearly understands that without eradicating bribery and goondaism from the government, no development is possible. Plus AAP is the only party that welcomes my participation in governance as an ordinary citizen. The rest just want my vote!
Continued on pg 9 «
Suhail Tatari I support AAP because it offers me participative democracy in the true sense rather than just a representative democracy. It is high time I took a decision that is right for my future. Jai Hind. Parmeet Sethi What will I tell my children, that goondas snatched their future and I kept looking on passively? It's time for me to fight. No matter how small or insignificant, I am against the big, corrupt and criminal politicians. That much I promise my kids. What about you?
Raj Zutshi
Renuka Shahane I am a strong supporter of AAP because I believe that power needs to get back in the hands of the common people without any gender, caste or religion bias, and AAP is the only truly secular, non-corrupt political party in India. Vishal Dadlani This is a fight for the nation's survival. India must eradicate communalism, corruption as well as criminality. This movement is not about an individual. WE are the people of India.

and stretched up to the Masjid in Bandra, and truth be told, they were largely all there. We followed the route, starting with Juhu Circle to ticl them off like classroom attendance, talking to some, just waving to others. And the atmosphere was upbeat and cheery throughout. At many places, bikers, students and motorists reached out to shake hands, accept a cap, pick up a platform or just say good luck. Between Juhu Circle and Sohum Spa, where the road turns towards the defunct Tulip Star Hotel, the people who are famous stood up for Aam Aadmi, the people and the party. At the Juhu Circle itself, perched on the road divider, stood MTV Roadies creator Raghu Ram with a friend, waving his signboard in the heat. It is perhaps one of the worst junctions on the route, filled with angry morotists, impatient bikers and hysterically-semaphoring policemen trying to keep moving the huge volume of traffic pouring in both fromVersova and Lokhandwala in one direction, and from Andheri, Vile Parle and Juhu in the other. Further up, opposite the HSBC Bank, his wife actor Sugandha Ram was adding to the general happiness, while near Sohum, there was Ayub Khan of Uttaran fame. Reportedly, he was earlier offered a ticket from the constituency and was unable to take up the offer. Now he was coming out in support of the candidate Mayank Gandhi and making sure that everyone knew where his heart lay. I “It gives me the hope that the freedom struggle that was fought for the country will no longer be in vain”, he is reported to have said. Ranvir Sheorey was at the Tulip Star junction, also standing on the road divider and waving his banner, waving at people, and giving a television channel sound bytes that looked like turning into a full scale interview. At the other end of the road towards Ramada Inn, Tejaswini Kolhapure said she was standing up because she felt that this was a

Meanwhile, within sight and sound of the ocean, National Film Award-winning director Hansal Mehta took a little time off to say gravely that the spelling of his name was a mistake, that it was not Hansel. But there was nothing remotely funny about the seriousness with which he approached his job of being the face of the aam aadmi party with Mumbai's iconic beach as a backdrop. Here the temperatures were getting to everyone but he stoutly said he was going to hang on till required. The roll call continued, with Suhail Tatari, the director known for his socially conscious films, including the 2008 film he made on farmer suicides, and Raj Zutshi of Slumdog Millionaire, Lagaan, Once Upon a Time in India etc. The dapper actor seemed untouched by the heat, multi-tasking between passing bikers, drivers and pedestrians to distribute caps and flyers. “ I hope these elections ignite a fire and the storm rages on. Do I think we will win? That's not important”, he says. At Daulat Nagar, where the Juhu Tara road turns into the crowded road leading to Khar, director Ashwini Chaudhury, who has done Dhoop, based upon the Kargil war, stood and talked to people passing by, giving them a thumbs up and accepting greetings. And at the point where the road turned into Linking Road, opposite the Aeroplane Garden, stood Vidya Malvade, the Chak De India girl who stole hearts as she wielded a hockey stick in the film made in 2007. Now she displayed similar grit as she declared, “ I am doing this to exp[ress my anger against corruption, and also because I must be part of the change that I want to see.” And the roll call moved on, with HR professional Harish Iyer of Viacom 18, and singer Bhupinder Singh at the Louis Philippe junction. By this time, it was well past 11.30 and the other posts were abandoned, mainly because everyone went back to Juhu for a press conference. Very likely it is the one campaign that will stick for a long time in the minds of people in the Constituency.

2009. With the stakes so high, the Congress fielded its vice president Rahul Gandhi on Sunday and the BJP rounded off the high pitch campaigning for Mumbai with a rally on the same MMRDA ground in Bandra-Kurla Complex a day
MUMBAI NORTH In 2009 Lok Sabha elections, Sanjay Nirupam (Congress) had trounced BJP stalwart Ram Naik by a margin of just 5,779 votes in Mumbai North Lok Sabha constituency. Then there was Shirish Parkar of the MNS who had bailed him out by splitting the BJP-Shiv Sena vote bank. This time around he has an altogether new and formidable rival in the form of Satish Jain of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). Although there are 21 candidates in the fray this time, it is a triangular contest between Nirupam, Gopal Shetty (BJP) and Jain of the AAP. Both the AAP and the Congress-NCP are jostling with each other to woo the minorities and the slumdwellers.
MUMBAI NORTH-WEST
The new localities of Jogeshwari, Dindoshi and Goregaon have also altered the equations in Mumbai North-West, the seat held by Gurudas Kamat (Congress). Kamat had won the seat by defeating his nearest Shiv Sena rival Gajanan Kirtikar by 38,387 votes in the 2009 Lok Sabha elections. Last time Shalini Thakare (MNS) and Abu Azmi (SP) had ensured the division of votes. Although this time there is no Thakare in the fray, the MNS has fielded Mahesh Manjrekar and taking him on is the starlet Rakhi Sawant of the Rashtriya Aam Party (RAP). Ironically this time around there is no minority candidate in the fray from this constituency. Kamat may have heaved a sigh of relief, but then he has to contend with another formidable opponent in the form of Mayank Gandhi of the AAP. For Kirtikar the headache of the MNS presence in the fray of 14 candi-
MUMBAI NORTH-CENTRAL
For sitting Congress MP Priya Dutt from Mumbai North-Central constituency, the contest does not seem to be the cakewalk it was in 2009. Then, Dutt had retained the seat by defeating her nearest BJP rival Mahesh Jethmalani by a whopping margin of 1.74 lakh votes. Though Shilpa Sarpotdar (MNS) had made Dutt’s task all the more easier by splitting the BJP-Sena vote bank. Although there is no MNS in the fray this time, Dutt has an array of 21 formidable opponents that mainly comprise BJP's Poonam Mahajan, AAP's Phiroze Palkhiwala and Farhan Azmi (SP). The latter being almost embarrassed by the outrageous remarks of his father Abu Azmi holding
MUMBAI NORTH-EAST The sting of losing the Mumbai North-East Lok Sabha constituency by a slender margin of just 2,933 votes in 2009 elections hurts BJPs Kirit Somaiya so much that these days he urges his voters to make 2,933 as their password. Sanjay Dina Patil (NCP) had trounced Somaiya by that margin thanks largely to Shishir Shinde (MNS) who had gobbled up precious 1.95 lakh votes in the 2009 elections. This time around, although there is no MNS in the fray of 19 candidates, both Patil and Somaiya have a formidable opponent in Medha Patkar (AAP). The MNS absence from the fray here is baffling considering the fact that it has
later on Monday. Now whose rally has a lasting impact on the psyche of the electorate will only be known as the 96.20 lakh electorate of Mumbai and the 70 lakh electorate of Thane cast their ballot on April 24.
The constituency is a heterogeneous mix of Gujarathi-Marathi middle class and upmarket localities of Borivali, with the minority and slum dominated pockets of Malad, Dahisar and Magathane. The total 17.25 lakh voters include – 9.42 lakh male, 7.82 lakh female and 1 others category voter. There are 1,657 polling stations in the constituency, some of which in Malwani and Pathanwadi area of Malad assembly segment are regarded as sensitive. In 2009, the average polling percentage in this constituency was a dismal 42.6 per cent. The migration of population from Mumbai city district to this constituency in Mumbai North has altered the demographic composition of the electorate.
dates still persists. Besides the fishermen colonies of Versova, Juhu and the slum pockets between Andheri-Jogeshwari belt, the constituency is more known for its home to the Bollywood industry and the Film City in Goregaon East. Kirtikar does admit that the new voter who has moved into the new localities will be tough to get him down to vote on April 24. The constituency has a mix of tinsel town, middle class localities of Goregaon, Jogeshwari and Dindoshi. The total of 17.25 lakh voters includes 9.61 male and 7.64 lakh female voters. There are 1,686 polling stations in the constituency, some of which are in areas of Jogeshwari West, Jogeshwari East, Dindoshi and have sensitive polling stations. The voting percentage in the 2009 Lok Sabha elections was just 44.06 per cent.

96.2 LAKH VOTERS WILL CHOOSE FROM 116 CANDIDATES ON APRIL 24 Mumbaikars might well ponder over the fact that in 2009, they polled a dismal voting percentage of just 41.40 per cent as against the third phase aggregate of 44.81 per cent. Thane also did not fare better with the aggregate vot-
ing percentage in 2009 was just 40.79 per cent. Considering the first and second phase polling percentages clocked a 60 per cent average this time, one hopes Mumbaikars do not disappoint the rest of the country.
MUMBAI SOUTH-CENTRAL How the division of the BJPSena votes worked in favour of the Congress-NCP alliance in the 2009 Lok Sabha elections is amply demonstrated in Mumbai SouthCentral Lok Sabha constituency. Sitting Congress MP Eknath Gaikwad who is vying for a hattrick victory, had in 2009, defeated his nearest Sena rival Suresh Gambhir by a margin of 75,706 votes, thanks to the 1.08 lakh votes polled by then MNS candidate Shewta Parulkar who has since joined Sena again. This time around Gaikwad faces multi-cornered challenge from Rahul Shewale (Sena), Aditya Rajan Shirodkar (MNS) and Sundar Balakrishnan of AAP. However the contest here appears to be more between Gaikwad, Shewale and Balakrishnan. Everybody here seems to be vying to woo the slumdwellers of 'Asias largest slum' Dharavi. Besides this, the constituency which largely falls under Mumbai City district, com-
prises two assembly segments of Anushakti Nagar (NCP) and Chembur (Congress) that are in Mumbai Suburban district. In 2009 Assembly elections, the MNS had given a bloody nose to the Sena by bagging the Mahim seat wherein lies the Sena Bhavan at Dadar falls. The total of 14.08 lakh voters, includes 7.73 lakh male, 6.34 female and 20 Other category voters. There are 1,563 polling stations in this constituency of which those in Dharavi, Anushakti and Chembur areas are considered as sensitive booths. The voting percentage in this constituency in 2009 was just 39.5 per, cent.
MUMBAI SOUTH sexually assaulted women equally guilty as their perpetrators. The constituency does comprise sizeable minority vote bank in Bandra, Chandivali, Kurla and Kalina. The area also has a sizeable area of upmarket localities of Vile Parle West and middle class Maharashtrian voters in Vile Parle East, Kurla and Bandra East. The total electorate of 16.96 lakh voters comprises 9.45 male, 7.50 lakh female and 4 other category voters. There are 1,718 polling stations in the constituency, some of which in the areas of Kalina, Kurla are known to be sensitive polling stations. The aggregate polling percentage in this constituency in 2009 was a dismal 39.52 per cent.
won three Assembly segments of Bhandup West, Vihroli and Ghatkopar West. An activist by prefession who has worked for the poor, Patkar vies for support amongst the slum pockets of Vikhroli, Bhandup, Ghatkopar East and Mankhurd Shivajinagar. The constituency is also dotted with new localities coming up in Mulund, Vikhroli and Bhandup areas. The total voter population in this constituency is 16.29 lakh and includes 9.02 lakh male, 7.26 lakh female and 69 Other category voters. There are 1,640 polling booths in the constituency. The voting percentage in this constituency in 2009 was 42.46 per cent.
In the 2009 Lok Sabha elections, Mumbai South constituency sitting MP Milind Deora (Congress) had defeated his nearest MNS rival Bala Nandgaonkar by a margin of 1.12 lakh votes, relegating Sena candidate Mohan Rawale to the third position with 1.46 lakh votes. This time also Deora faces his arch rival Bala Nandgaonkar. While his other rival of 2009, Meera Sanyal is now a formidable AAP candidate. Considering the fact that the constituency has a sizeable pocket of slumdwellers in Colaba, minority community pockets in Byculla area and the textile mill areas of Mahalaxmi and surroundings, the CPI has fielded Prakash Reddy. The constituency also houses the upmarket localities of Malabar Hill and Worli seaface, home to the rich and powerful. Although there are 20 candidates in the fray here, this time around the main contest is still between Deora and Nandgaonkar, with a challenge being thrown at them by Sena’s Arvind
Sawant and Sanyal. The latter is assiduously wooing the minority and slum pockets. The total voters in this constituency are 14.37 lakhs, of which 8.04 lakh are male, 6.33 lakh female and 15 Other category voters. There are 1,546 polling stations of which those in the Byculla area are considered sensitive. This time around here the decisive factor here will be which way the sizeable Maharashtrian, Gujarathi, Marwai and Jain community voters vote. In 2009 Lok Sabha elections the aggregate polling percentage in this constituency was 40.37 per cent.

In this regard, the police have launched a drive to take p re ve n t i ve measures against the criminals on record and increase security at polling booths in the South Region. Action against drug peddlers as well as bootleggers in the slums, who can influence the lower income voters, is taken and a detailed record of such people is maintained. Request has been made to the Election Commission to deploy few women at every polling booth. These women will check the faces of burkha-clad females and veiled women to avoid double voting. The police will take strict action against people who would ride the voters to the polling booth in their vehicles. This might influence the voters. 2) Additional CP (Central) Madhukar Pandey: Yes, my region is completely prepared to tackle any untoward

Lashing out at the UPA, he said that whenever the opposition raises questions of jobs, price rise, the Congress raises the bogey of secularism. Commenting upon the railway infrastructure of Mumbai, he said that he would give emphasis on modernisation, maximum capacity utilisation and special package for Mumbai.
Terming the Congress led UPA government manifesto as charter of deceit, he questioned it's slogan of giving 10 crore jobs. Referring to the Rs.1,000 crore Nirbhaya fund, Modi said that not a single paisa was spent, terming it as cheating. In a bid to strike a dialogue with 18 to 28 year old youths, he said that the HSC exam of any youth is life making changing event. He said a minor slip up can destabilise the life and career. Modi called upon the youth to elect a stable government to secure their own future.
Correcting his previous mistake, Modi began his speech in chaste Marathi and admitted that he missed the late Sena patriarch Balasaheb Thackeray. Addressing the rally, Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray criticised Congress led UPA government of treating Mumbai as a hen that laid the golden egg, without anything in return. Referring to Congress slogan of 25 per cent reservation for women in police force, he said the government kept quite over the humiliation of women cops at Azad Maidan.

ore than 100 residents of Chembur, yesterday, attended a public hearing on the proposal to declare the area as a heritage precinct. After two years, the review committee, constituted by the Municipal Commissioner under the chairmanship of Dinesh K. Afzulpurkar, have resolved to finally make a decision. The final decision will lead to the old buildings in Chembur to be tagged as 'heritage sites', rendering the owners unable to redevelop their structures.B.K. Mhatre, a resident from Chembur said, “Last week also there was a public hearing held, but there was no such decision taken. As seen, Chembur does not have any such historical importance and it is not qualified to be declared as a heritage precinct. It doesn't have any historical importance.”As per the letter sent to the residents on July 31, 2012 by the Mumbai Heritage Conservation Committee (MHCC) the Chembur precinct
is located to the south-west of the Chembur railway station, wherein, it is surrounded by the Beggars' Home near the R.C. Marg, V.N. Purav Road (Sion Trombay Road) on the south, Subash Nagar Ghatla village on the east and M.G. Acharya Road on the north. Chembur precinct consists of three sub-precincts namely Chembur Gaothan, Old Chembur and St Anthony's Society. Missing toddler found dead in open nullah By Suresh Golani
T
ragedy struck the Bhagat family in Bhayandar when the body of their missing six-year-old son was found in an open nullah near their tenement early on Monday morning. The youngest of three siblings, Ritesh (6) had mysteriously disappeared while playing near his home on Sunday evening. After a futile search, Ritesh's father, Bindeshwar, who is an auto-rickshaw driver informed the police about the toddler's disappearance late on Sunday night. However, locals spotted the body of a child lying in an open nullah near the creek. Bindeshwar reached the spot and identified the child. Police and fire
brigade personnel rushed to the scene and pulled out the body. After a post mortem, Ritesh's body was handed over to his grief stricken family. "I have been regularly corresponding with the civic authorities, warning them about such dangers, demanding the immediate construction of a pucca nullah," claimed corporator and advocate, Ravi Vyas, who has demanded action against civic officials for their negligence. Locals however said that the child may have accidentally slipped into nullah and got swept away due to high tide. "Prima facie, it appears to be a clear case of accidental death, but we are probing all angles," said investigating officer PSI Deepak Kadam.

The State Election Commission, which is at the receiving end after the second phase of elections in the state and widespread protests in Pune, reiterated that there is no foolproof measure against the errors. Gadre said, “The exercise of deletions was concluded in August 2013 and the names of as many as 50 lakh people were deleted. Through lots of publicity, we

n a tragic incident, a newlywed couple was killed in a road mishap on the MumbaiAhmedabad National Highway near Virar on Monday morning. The couple, residents of Koliwada village in Vasai, were identified as Purshottam Bhadelikar (28) and Meeta (24), were on their to pay obeisance at the Mahalakshmi temple in Dahanu when their bike rammed into an illegally parked truck near Sakwar village. Locals spotted the couple lying in a pool of blood and rushed them to a nearby hospital where they were declared dead on arrival. The
tragedy did not end here as, unable to bear the shock of the loss of his daughter and son-in-law, Meeta’s 48-yearold father, Gnyaneshwar Harnekar, died after suffering a massive heart attack. A pall of gloom descended on Koliwada village as the news of the tragic deaths trickled in. The couple had entered into wedlock on March 9, 2014 and as a part of their traditional ritual had planned a trip to the temple. The police have registered a case under the relevant sections of the IPC and the Motor Vehicle Act against the driver of the yet to be identified truck.

Details of the proposed deletions were also circulated to political parties. There was no secrecy in the deletions.” He further added, “After August 2013, 40 lakh new voters were added in the summary revision. Another 16 lakh were added after January 31, 2014 including 6.8 lakh after March 9 this year. Hence, a total of 56 lakh voters have been added which includes 23 lakh first time voters.” Clarifying the Pune controversy, Gadre said, “In Pune, 6.22 lakh names were deleted out of which 1,400 complained that their names have been mistakenly deleted. He stated that so far, they have not received official complaints from citizens that their names have been mistakenly deleted. Gadre pointed out that, “For the first time, a massive deletion exercise was undertaken last year. We agree it is not foolproof because about 60,000 people were in the exercise to scrutinise the electoral roll of eight crore people. A person might not be found in the residence during one or two visits of the officials and neighbours might not know. The same person may turn up after two months.”

ith the arrest of two gang members of the Ravi Pujari gang on Sunday, the Mumbai Crime Branch is now probing the role of an aged gangster, who is believed to be recruiting for the underworld gang. Sleuths from the Anti-Extortion Cell (AEC) of the crime branch arrested two bouncers working at a night club of five-star Sea Princes Hotel. Further, police seized a carbine with two magazines, pistols and eight live rounds from the accused duo identified as Deepak Padwal and Amol Sawant. The latter was nabbed following the arrest of Kamal Singh Rajput and his associate Datta Waghre in the joint operation by AEC and Manglore police last month. Interestingly, the police learned that Kamal is the son of Vijay Singh Rajput, an old gangster of the 80s, who worked for Chhota Rajan. Kamal was the head of nearly 14 bouncers working in the club, said the police official. “The latest arrested duo were smuggling weapons out of the city at the behest of Kamal,” said joint commissioner of police (Crime) Sadanand Date. “It was Kamal at whose behest a firing had taken place in Manglore, for which he was wanted there,” said Vinayak Vast, senior inspector of AEC. Ponder awhile... “A vote is like a rifle: its usefulness depends upon the character of the user.” — Theodore Roosevelt
BJP plays the ‘Vadra card’ T
HE Vadra issue has emerged during the last few crucial days of the Lok Sabha poll. The BJP has taken it up in right earnest. Robert Vadra, husband of Sonia Gandhi's daughter Priyanka is alleged to have been involved in corrupt land deals and made crores. He has however been completely cleared by the court, but it looks like the taint has remained. The BJP has found in the Vadra case a stronger stick to beat the Congress with. Probably Priyanka prudently kept away from the poll fray. It is being said that Kumar Vishwas, the AAP candidate is making full use of the allegations against Vadra. As per the court findings, Robert Vadra has a clean record and he was evidently not involved in a corrupt case. Once however an allegation of corruption is made, it sticks: a court exoneration does not help much in washing away the corrupt image. People are likely to believe that Vadra has attracted the charges against him because he had all the chance to take advantage of his relation with the ‘remote control’ of the government – Sonia Gandhi. One of the BJP's leaders, Uma Bharti, has said that if the party comes to power, it will put Vadra in jail. Another leader has said cases against him will be reopened. It is a fact that the IAS secretary Mr. Khemka swears he has found many dealings wrong. His signature approving land deals does not appear in any of the files in the case. For his honest stand, it is a well-known fact Khemka was harassed and then transferred. There is little doubt that Vadra's image is far from good. Though the court has cleared him, the BJP's campaign against him has continued and in fact, intensified. It cannot be said that the corrupt charges against Vadra will not affect the chances of Rahul and Sonia Gandhi in Amethi and Rae Bareili. The opposition will seize the opportunity to bring up the Vadra case to the poll scene in both Amethi and Rae Bareili.

NDIA is halfway through the Lok Sabha election process. Two factors have come to the fore so far: caste and money. I am dismayed about the caste. I had imagined that in some 67 years since independence, the nation would have matured enough not to be swayed by baser instincts. Lately, religion has been inducted by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The appeal in the name of religion in the fifties was understandable because the country had been partitioned on the basis of religion in August 1947. The world’s biggest holocaust took place, followed by the exodus of 3.5 crore of people. The exchange of population was fairly rejected by both the Indian National Congress and the Muslim League, the arbiters of the country’s future. First, Mahatma Gandhi and then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru saw to it that religion was not mixed with politics. This worked for a few years. In the sixties the defeat at the hands of the Chinese was the topic of elections. Nehru’s negligence not to prepare the country’s defence had engaged the voters’ attention.
Secularism has a general appeal The seventies saw the domination of autocrat Indira Gandhi who also suspended the constitution and detained one lakh people without trial. Her Congress party was wiped out in the northern India. Her return in 1980 was due to the squabbles in successor Janata Party. It was not her triumph but the rejection of the Janata Party. Thus far the caste played a minor role. Some who highlighted it were generally defeated. Money, of course, has counted from day one. The Election Commission fixed the limit for a candidate’s expenditure at Rs.40 lakh in 1951 when the first general election was held. Now it has been raised to Rs.70 lakh. Still this is far less than what a candidate splurges—an average of Rs.3 crore is spent by a Lok Sabha candidate. Many spend at least triple the amount. Despite the rules the Election Commission has laid down, no candidate has ever been disqualified on the ground of excessive spending. The catch is that political parties are not governed by any law or rule that forces them not to spend more than the ceiling prescribed. In fact, the parties’ dishonesty is the real problem. The political parties are under no obligation to have any upper limit on their expenditure. They have unanimously

rejected the application of Right to Information (RTI) to their internal working. If expenses during elections are to be curbed some accountability is necessary. An accountability commission can be appointed since the Election Commission has been too soft to take action. Since MPs are the ones to pass legislation on this, they would never adopt a bill which will curb them. Both the Congress and the BJP spend lavishly. The BJP tops the list because the corporate sector is fully behind the party, believing that Narendra Modi will be the next Prime Minister and would leave the field open to them. Religion has, no doubt, taken a back seat. Modi’s most virulent speeches skirt around Hindutva but do not mention it specifically because secularism has a general appeal. The fact is that the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh
Sub-caste menace cannot be curbed Such persons, including Amit Shah, should have been disqualified from contesting the elections. Yet the Election Commission has preferred to impose a ban on them from making speeches in UP, the state to which the two belong. The punishment should have been more severe. The caste factor which has affected the electorate, in fact, is the sub-caste. Dalits have many castes and the creamy layer dictates the government. The upper castes have Marathas, Rajputs, Jats and so on. Today, the baradari (community) members of the same Kuldip Nayar caste are negating the fair election in a dem(RSS) is openly participating in canvassing al- ocratic society. BETWEEN THE LINES
To remain innocent is dangerous M
ADAME Curie was working on a certain mathematical problem for three years continuously and the more she tried, the farther and farther away the solution seemed. She tried every possible way, but nothing was working, nothing was happening. And there was somewhere a deep, tacit feeling that "The solution exists. I am not struggling with something absurd." This tacit feeling continued all the time as an undercurrent; hence she could not drop the effort either. She was getting tired -- three years wasted for a single problem. But deep down within herself somebody was saying, "The solution IS possible. This exercise is not futile. Go on." And she went on stubbornly, she persisted. She dropped all other projects, she forced herself totally into the one problem. But the more she tried, the more impossible it became. One night it happened, almost as it happened to Gautama the Buddha; of course, the problems were different, but the process was the same. Buddha had struggled for six years to attain enlightenment and he had attained nothing. Then one night he dropped the whole effort, went to sleep, and, by the morning when the last star was setting, he became enlightened. That night Madame Curie dropped the idea, the whole project — she closed the
whenever he or she feels like doing so. Against this stance of the BJP, it is not surprising to find the party supporting Modi’s Man Friday, Amit Shah, who said in UP to take “revenge” in the Lok Sabha elections. He did not mention the word, Muslim, but everyone could infer what he meant was that they should be punished at the polls. The Samajwadi Party’s Azam Khan, trying to be Muslims’ Modi, has had no shame in his attempt to communalise the armed forces. He has neither withdrawn his words nor is he apologising. His remark that only Indian Muslim soldiers captured the Kargil heights, not the Hindus, indicates his polluted thinking. He even does not know that it is the regiments which fight and they have soldiers of all communities. A regiment wins or loses, not soldiers of a particular community.
chapter. "Enough is enough! Three years wasted is too much for one problem." There were other problems which were waiting to be solved. It was finished in her mind, although the tacit understanding was still there just like a constant murmur. But she had followed it long enough, it was time. One has only a limited time; three years is too much for one problem. Deliberately she dropped
MATTER & SPIRIT the idea. As far as she was concerned she closed the whole project. She went to sleep never to be bothered by that problem again. And in the morning when she got up she was surprised. On a piece of paper on her table, the solution was there, written in her own handwriting. She could not believe her eyes. Who had done it? The servant could not have done it -- he knew nothing of mathematics, and if Madame Curie had not been able to do it in three years, how could the servant have done it? And there was nobody else in the house. And the servant had not entered in the night - the doors were locked from inside. She looked closely and the handwriting resembled hers. Then suddenly she remembered a dream. In the dream she had seen that she had got
up, gone to the table, written something.... Slowly slowly, the dream became clear. Slowly slowly, she remembered that she had done it in the night. It was not a dream, she had actually done it. And this was the solution! For three years she had been struggling hard and nothing was happening -- and the night she dropped the project, it happened. What happened? She became relaxed. Once you have dropped the effort you become relaxed, you become restful, you become soft, you become wide, you become open. It was there inside her, it surfaced. Finding the mind no longer tense, it surfaced. Innocence is there, you have simply forgotten it -- you have been made to forget it. Society is cunning. For centuries man has learned that you can survive in this society only if you are cunning; the more cunning you are, the more successful you will be. That's the whole game of politics: be cunning, be more cunning than others. Whosoever is more cunning is going to succeed. After centuries of cunningness man has learned one thing: that to remain innocent is dangerous, you will not be able to survive. Hence parents try to drive their children out of their innocence. Teachers, schools, colleges, universities exist for the simple work of making you more cunning, more clever. Although they call it intelligence it is not intelligence. — Osho

Dynastic politics of the leaders I am clear about one thing this election season. I will not consider the NCP candidates. REPREHENSIBLE: The former CM of UP has done a despicable deed by threatening teachers into voting for his party is highly condemnable and he should be suitably punished by the EC.
Mulayam's deplorable threat THE reported 'threat' given by Mulayam Singh Yadav to abruptly terminate the jobs of contract teachers if they do not exercise their franchise in favour of SP is not only despicable but highly objectionable coming as it does from the father of the CM of the Uttar Pradesh and a former CM himself of OF that state is liable for LETTER THE DAY 'penal action' at as immediately a date as possible. The teachers who are working on contract basis have got their jobs based on their 'qualifications' and doing 'yeoman service' by grooming children which gives a direction not only to their lives but also guides to the prosperity of the Nation as a whole. The teaching profession is 'highly respected' and one of the highest paid professions in US, and western countries as they know that among other salient features the teachers are basically instrumental in building the Nation. — T.M. There are special courts set up for this with women judges. Senior inspector Shirish Sawant added, “Now it is mandatory to appoint an officer to record the child’s statement. As far as possible, it should be recorded by a woman officer who is not in uniform”. Strengthen up
D
ealing with a difficult colleague at work, staying away from the sniffles when everyone around you is coughing and sneezing and pushing your body that extra mile while your friends complain about how the heat is making it impossible to work out — do you know what you need to be able to do all of this? Strength — internal as well as external. From maintaining mental brawn and a tough immune system, to making sure that your body is physically tough, building your overall strength will help you in more ways than one. So, we tell you about the different ways you can boost your body’s strength.
If you think going to the gym will build strength and that keeping a journal is good enough to help your brain stay strong and active, you need to up your game. In order to be holistically healthy, you need to build physical as well as mental strength. So, Shirley Mistry & Dev Goswami tell you how to do just that
INNER STRENGTH You may be tough on the outside, but toughening up your insides and strengthening your mind is equally important. Given the lack of stability in relationships, the uncertainty that has become so commonplace in most of our lives and the stress and strife that is associated with moving ahead in your career, it is crucial to make sure you have a reserve of inner strength and aren’t slowing down because you are stressed or unhappy. When your physical strength gives way, it is your inner strength that keeps you going in difficult situations and so, it is important to ensure that stay strong in order to be satisfied.
WHaT you caN do While you can’t expect instant results, we suggest you begin working towards developing your inner strength at the earliest. Since there’s no better time than now to begin, here are a few tips: Learn to say no While this may not be the best policy to follow at work, learn to say no wherever else you can. For example, agreeing to take care of your neighbour’s dog when you have your hands full with visiting relatives is a recipe for disaster. So, while it is good to help someone whenever you can, say no when you are aware that another task is going to eat into your energy reserves. Not only will you have to precariously juggle your time and energy, if you take on too many things at once, you won’t be giving any task a 100%. Most importantly, saying yes to everything and everyone only means that you will end up frazzled, stressed and sapped of all your energy. Live a little If you have been regimental all your life, this is worth a shot. Being too tightly wound up about everything is tiring and takes up more of your energy than you realise, which means that the smallest things will bother you to no end and you won’t be able to stop worrying about them until everything falls back in place — irrespective of whether it is in your control. So, whenever you can, go back to being a child

PHySIcaL STRENGTH
>> Aerobics is a fun and effective way to build your external strength
A strong body is about much more than having ripped muscles and flat abs. A strong physical state will ensure that an exhausting day at work doesn’t stop you from working out or indulging in activities that you love afterwards. These tips will help you improve your stamina: Play sports Football, basketball, tennis and even badminton are activities that can help improve your overall strength, not to mention that you will have loads of fun and so, working out won't seem like a task. At least once a week, devote a few hours to playing sports, as they not only help sculpt your body and improve your stamina, they also help you release any pent-up stress or frustration.
Surround yourself with positivity We don’t mean to preach, but it’s true that your mood improves when you surround yourself with positive thinkers. If all the people you hang out with are always talking about how bad the economy is, how all relationships have to come to an ugly end or how the world is a big, bad place all the time, you subconsciously you begin to think about these things and obsess over them as well. There is no good that comes from feeling bad about your life. Instead, visit places and meet people who make you happy, energised and make you feel good about yourself. You will find that you are more motivated and will also realise that your worries aren’t insurmountable.
yoga Yoga might seem light-weight when you compare it to strength building exercises such as weight-lifting. But, the fact is that yoga uses your body as resistance, not only to build strength but also to sculpt your muscles, giving you a lean frame. Regularly practicing yoga can keep you incredibly fit and considering it also benefits your inner health, it is one of the best activities that condition your body to stay strong.
Keep happiness handy Every time you feel low, or are going through a rough patch, go through old photographs, letters, emails and notes. If you think you've hit rock bottom, revisiting happy memories serves as a reminder that there are always good things in store. It is also a reminder of the happiness you’ve brought to other peoples’ lives and will restore your faith in yourself when you are down in the dumps.
aerobics Do not miss out on aerobics when you're planning your workout. Just like yoga, aerobic exercises work a large number of your body's muscles and will help improve your stamina. They also improve one crucial element of a strong body — cardiovascular health. A strong heart makes for a strong body and so, make sure to cycle, jog and walk regularly.
Talk to someone The worst thing you can do to is keep to yourself when you are feeling worthless and not in control of your life. Before you make any decision, it is always a good idea to talk to a few close friends or family members about what is going on in your life. You will find that a fresh perspective really helps and often, you may find that you were over-thinking a problem or not approaching a difficult situation with the right attitude. Talking to people who genuinely care about you is akin to untangling the wires and getting your thoughts in order, without the repercussions of hasty (and often unnecessary) decisions.
Switch it up One of the most important aspects of building external strength is constantly changing workouts. Your body gets used to a new physical activity after two-three weeks, after which the benefits you get will decrease slightly. So, if you've been running for two weeks, switch to running (yes, running not climbing) up and down the stairs for the next two weeks. If you've been playing football for three weeks, switch to badminton. You need to make sure that your body is constantly challenged by new movements.
>> Boosting your immunity is important for your inner strength, as it helps keep diseases at bay
BuILd youR ImmuNITy
While we are on the subject, to build your immunity (considering the fluctuating weather), you need to make sure that you eat right. Apart from eating fresh produce, there are certain foods that help improve your immunity more than the others. So, take a look at our pick of the best immunity-boosting foods: yoghurt: Studies have shown that eating a cup of yoghurt every day reduces your chances of catching a cold by 25%. Lactobacillus reuteri, a bacteria that is present in yoghurt, stops disease causing viruses from multiplying. If this wasn't a good enough reason, it will also keep you cool during summer. onion & Garlic: We’ve spoken about it earlier
and it is essential to reiterate, that onion and garlic (especially when eaten as a combo) work miracles at boosting your immunity. They are packed with immunity boosting compounds and help a common cold as well. Honey: Not only does honey soothe a sore throat, it is also good at keeping bacteria, viruses and fungi away. Its antibacterial and antimicrobial properties work wonders for your immunity. oranges: Oranges contain the highest levels of vitamin C and help your body produce disease fighting antibodies. It also helps increase the production of white blood cells.

« Know more: Cold plaSma during SurgerieS A new discovery by Israeli medical device company IonMed, promises to close incisions without any surgical scars. Radhika R. finds out exactly what the new procedure using Cold Plasma therapy is
N
o, we're not talking about another way to keep cool during the summer. Cold plasma is actually a new invention that has taken medical experts over the world by surprise. The simple procedure can be performed during surgeries, in order to close incisions without leaving any scars. Cold plasma is an innovative procedure that will prove beneficial for medical as well as cosmetic surgery. During this treatment, certain particles of plasma gas are ionised. This procedure was first invented and tested in Israel. After tests found that it seemed to help people, it started expanding as a treatment. The medical device called IonMed, also developed in Israel, used the procedure to close surgical incisions with less pain and no scars. The
procedure allows you to let go of the old, conventional method of using a needle and thread to close incisions. This also means that post-surgery, pain reduces quite a bit. This ingenious technology takes only a few minutes to perform and completely seals the area. Although this gas has proven helpful to repair tissues, control excess bleeding and enhance tissue restoration, it was considered unsafe for surgery since it has to be used at high temperatures, which could damage the body. The plasma gas for this surgery is used at 40°C, which is safe for the body. Apart from the cosmetic benefits, it was also found to be effective in disinfecting and destructing harmful cancer cells. But, cold plasma needs to be handled very carefully and the procedure should
be performed only by trained professionals. Cold plasma therapy is also poised to help women through caesarean deliveries. Women who undergo these operations are prone to infections and closing their surgical cuts requires expertise and the use of complicated equipment. The cold plasma technique promises to leave women infection-free and without scars. This was proven in a small experiment done by the Israeli organisation developing the treatment. IonMed used their equipment, BioWeld1 (that conducts cold plasma therapy), on 16 women who underwent a caesarean. The therapy closed their skin incisions with minimal pain. After several weeks of the procedure, the company reported that the wounds had healed and the likelihood
of complications and infections was very low. In spite of all its benefits, Indian medical experts are yet to accept it. Dr. Nina Madnani, a consultant dermatologist raises her own concerns. She tells us, “Not many doctors are aware of this therapy yet. It hasn’t crossed all medical expectations and so, it’s too early to accept it.” She adds, “I wouldn't include this procedure in the treatments that we conduct at my clinic, simply because I am not convinced about this process yet.” All in all, if this treatment does gain acceptance in India, it will probably attract several patients. From getting rid of a small scar to eliminating cancer cells, cold plasma surgeries seem set to revolutionise the field of surgery.

no touch-ups From eyeliner that never fades to mascara that will never run, permanent makeup is revolutionising the beauty industry. Radhika R. tells you what surprising ways exist to ensure that your makeup stays put
Y
ou’re always running late and so, are constantly trying to apply your makeup on your way, hurriedly swiping liner across your eyelids when you're at a signal or in the bathroom once you reach work. If you don't have the time to spend 15-20 minutes in front of a mirror every morning to get the perfect pout and make sure your lashes look fuller, help is at hand, and it's called permanent makeup. We're not quite sure what we think of having one colour tattoed across our eyelids forever, but such procedures exist and are growing increasingly popular. Various parts of your face can be remodeled or accentuated with permanent makeup. You can either revitalise your skin or completely change it’s appearance. Some of these techniques are highly effective and most of them are pretty economical, especially since you won't be constantly purchasing liners and mascara anymore. Take a look at some:
eyes Eyes are the windows to your soul — so you better make sure they look pretty! Several permanent makeup options exist to ensure this, including eyebrow enhancement, which means you will never have to thread, wax or pluck at your eyebrows again. There’s also the slightly more questionable, permanent kohl and eyeliner procedure. We're still on the fence about it, but for women
who want one colour imprinted permanently on their eyelids, this is enhancements, Eyelash perfect. though they've been around longer, are also becoming a popular way of getting natural-looking, long eyelashes that save you the hassle of using fake eyelashes when you go out. try it out To get permanent liner or longer eyelashes, visit the Marvie Ann Beck Salon, Bandra (W )
Lips Don’t ignore your pout. Whether you’re pouting in front of the mirror or taking a selfie, you will want your lips to look picture-ready at all times, which is where permanent lip liners and colours come in. While the procedure is more effective than botox or fillers for shapely lips and can also help correct asymmetry, remember that you will have one colour on your lips, constantly, unless you opt for a nude shade that you can colour over, of course. try it out To wake up every day with perfect lips, contact Berkowits clinic. They have branches all over Mumbai
Beauty spots & DimpLes Beauty spots and dimples are highly coveted, but not that uncommon anymore. While not everyone is blessed with a strategically placed
beauty spot à la Cindy Crawford, that doesn’t mean you can't get one put there. Simple procedures that can be performed in as little as 15 minutes can give you dimples and beauty spots. To add dimples, a small, painless incision is made inside your cheek, which when stitched causes a dimpling effect on the outer skin. try it out For dimples, you can make an appointment at Eternesse Clinic in Andheri (W )
expert speak Dr. Zubeida Palkar, who has been a cosmetologist for the past 15 years, gives permanent makeup her nod of approval. She tells us, “Overdoing any treatment is not good, but that’s where the responsibility of the doctor lies. You have to guide patients and let them know when they don’t really need to undergo a procedure.” When we asked her about the side effects of remodeling a natural face, Dr. Palkar explained, “There are no major side effects. It has achieved great success for a reason. Some people need it, not just as a cosmetic change. We meet several patients who undergo chemotherapy and require these treatments to build their confidence.” According to Zubeida, eyebrow enhancement is a clear winner when it comes to the different types of permanent makeup.

China new transit hub for Pak operators to smuggle FICN By Ashwini Shrivastava
N
EW DELHI: In a worrying trend, central intelligence agencies have found that China has emerged as a new transit hub for Pakistan-based operators to circulate fake Indian currency which was also being routed in 'diplomatic bags' to Pakistan High Commission in Colombo and via two leading courier services. "Fake Indian Currency Notes (FICN) are being routed to Pakistan High Commission in Colombo through diplomatic bag. FICN are being routed from Pakistan to India and Nepal via China through FedEx and DHL courier in the form of parcels," according to a report by Economic Intelligence Council (EIC) headed by Finance Minister P. Chidambaram. When contacted by PTI, both the companies denied use of their network for any illegal activity. Pakistan based operators are sending the fake currency by air carriers not only to Nepal and Bangladesh but also routing it via Dubai, Kuala Lampur, Bangkok and Sri Lanka, the report said. These racketeers are reportedly using middle aged and even old Punjabi and Muslim ladies as con-
duits for carrying FICN into India through land border and airport, according to the report.
A pooled contingent of close to 1.3-lakh paramilitary and state police personnel have been deployed to exclusively cater to election-related duties by the Union Home Ministry. Apart from these men, close to 1.2 lakh personnel and special units are already present in the Naxal and militancy affected areas to undertake operations and facilitate smooth movements of these forces across various states. The Ministry has also identified 33 worst Naxal-affected districts as being very sensitive with the highest number of incidents having been reported in these areas in Lok Sabha elections in 2004 and 2009 and also during Assembly polls in 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2013.

OUSTON: Over 100 Indian youths -- detained by US authorities for allegedly entering the country illegally to seek asylum -are on a hunger strike. The men, all hailing from Punjab, have been languishing in El Paso Processing Centre in Texas in miserable condition since last year, a non-profit group that has been providing the detainees with legal support told PTI. North American Punjabi Association (NAPA) said it has urged Immigration and Custom Enforcement (ICE) authorities to immediately release the youths, currently on hunger strike. In a statement, the group urged ICE Deputy Assistant Secretary Thomas S. Winkowski to release the men, said Satnam Singh Chahal, executive director, NAPA. Chahal said the ICE is legally bound to release detainees as soon
as they proved their true identities and reasons for seeking asylum in the US. There is no evidence against any of the detainees held since last year, he said. Two hunger strikers were recently hospitalised and many others are in danger, Chahal said, adding that NAPA has learnt that ICE was on the verge of force-feeding striking detainees -- a practice that the United Nations has termed as 'torture'. These youths have been detained indefinitely despite proving their identities and certifying their reasons for entering the US, he said. "Some detainees had been transferred to a barrack called 'LO-AHA', a 5x10 feet room consisting of toilet and bed where normally criminaltype prisoners are detained," Chahal added. The group said it is also seeking action against travel and immigration agents who lured the youths with dreams of settling in the US.

HCLT’s US$ revenues came in line with estimates (+3% QoQ) but operating margins higher (+90bps to 24.6% vs. RCMLe: 23.3%) led by G&A savings. While IMS continues to be the growth driver (+5% QoQ CC), Applications services also saw recovery in growth (+2.9% QoQ CC). We tweak our EPS estimates to factor in a stronger INR. While HCLT’s strong IMS practice should continue to drive growth, we see limited upside risk to margins which could restrict earnings upgrades. Q3 marginally ahead of expectations: HCLT’s revenues grew 3% QoQ to US$ 1.36bn, in line with expectations. EBIT margins expanded 90bps QoQ to 24.6%, (RCMLe 23.3%) led by G&A savings as many projects moved into the execution phase. Growth continued to be driven by Infrastructure services (+5% QoQ CC), while Application services (45% of revenues)/Business services grew by 2.9%/-1.3% QoQ CC. Growth metrics mixed: Application Development/Enterprise Application revenues grew by 2.1%/4.2% CC QoQ. Like TCS/INFO, growth in the Americas was weak for HCLT (+0.4% QoQ CC), while Europe grew by 4.8% QoQ CC and ROW by 10.4% QoQ CC (off a low base). Vertical-wise, growth in BFSI/Manufacturing stood at 6.8%/2.1% QoQ CC and was muted for Lifesciences/TME at 0%/-2.7% QoQ CC. HCLT added 1,858 employees to 90,190 and utilisation stood at 84.2%. Operating cash flows for Q4 came in at US$ 234mn and DSOs increased to 59 days from 55 days in Q2. Valuations and View: Overall, Q4 was an in-line quarter for HCLT with continued growth in Infrastructure Services. We adjust our FY15/FY16 EPS estimates by 0.5%/-0.6% to factor in a stronger INR (USD/INR rate of 60.5/60 for FY15/FY16). Valuations (at 15x FY15 P/E) are reasonable. CLSA calls a ‘Buy’ on Hathway Cable & Datacom CMP: Rs. 244
Target Rs. 302
Cable operators in India have started seeing qualitative improvements in their businesses as easing of conflicts between LCOs and MSOs lead to them finally reaping digitisation benefits. Hathway, with7.6m digitized subscribers, is India’s largest digital cable provider. Improving ARPUs and potential progress of digitisation Phase III offers high visibility on a 30% Ebitda cagr over FY14-17. Rising broadband penetration and higher internet ARPUs offer substantial upsides. We initiate coverage with a BUY. Our DCF based target of Rs302 offers 31% upside. Hathway’s strong execution to pay off as industry dynamics improve: A shifting of Local Cable Operators (LCOs) to improved billing terms for the larger cable companies i.e. Multi System Operators (MSOs) has signalled the acceptance of digitisation by LCOs – the last hurdle in digitisation. This will trigger monetization of capex incurred by the MSOs during first two phases of digitisation. Hathway has executed well to convert 7.6m of its 11.0m cable universe to digital, giving it a leading c.30% market share of digital cable in India and making it a top beneficiary. Subscription surge provides high visibility to 30% Ebitda cagr: As Hathway’s paying subscriber base rises to 11.0m, its realized Arpu’s will also rise by c.75% over the period as it enjoys double benefit of rising declarations by LCOs as well as better realizations from premium content. Overall, we expect Hathway’s subscriptions revenues to grow at a 48% cagr over FY14-17CL to Rs16.9bn, driving a 23% overall revenue cagr to Rs25.4bn and 30% Ebitda cagr to Rs7.7bn over the period. Extending execution success to Broadband is the upside: With 440k broadband subscribers, Hathway is India’s largest cable broadband operator. Low internet penetration (17%) and Hathway’s rising reach (1.7m internet home passes out of 11m reach) provide good growth opportunity. Hathway is implementing a high speed (50Mbps, DOCSIS 3.0 system) which should enable higher ARPUs as well as maintain competitiveness against mobile broadband. We build in a 24% cagr in broadband revenues to Rs3.0bn by FY17 as Hathway adds another 200k subscribers by FY17. Initiate with BUY; Broadband / Arpu offer big option value: We initiate coverage with a BUY, with our DCF based target price of Rs302 offering 31% upside. Hathway will incur c.Rs12-13bn capex as it converts its remaining universe to digital, which could trigger equity raising if digitization were to accelerate. Upside to estimates is higher ARPUs (premium content, HD) where a 5% higher base can add 8% to target price. There is also a big option value of broadband ramp-up, if Hathway maintains conversions and even half of subscribers move to higher Arpu, DCF would rise to Rs445/share. High visibility on medium term growth: Hathway’s 11m digital cable universe is currently only partially monetized. While 7.6m households have been digitised, the company is currently being paid for only 6.1m of them. The lag in paying subscribers versus digitized subscribers is on account of the delay in customer application form filling (CAF) process. Acquisition of customer specific data via CAF lets the MSO to accurately identify and generate a bill as per subscribers’ choice of channels.

By Vijay Shanker
ehru Centre organised the Yuva Kala Mahotsav at their auditorium featuring talented performers. Among the performers were Kuchipudi danseuse Sanskriti Chatterjee and Kathak danseuse Bhakti Deshpande. It is gratifying to note that young talent is given all the encouragement they deserve. Besides the invocation, the mainstay of Sanskriti's performance was the interpretation of the royal lady Satyabhama in the number known as Bhama Kalapam. This number portrayed the various moods of the lady and her intimate relationship with Lord Krishna, the item goes to various stages of expressions and movements pertaining to Bhava Pravesh Daru, Madana Daru and Lekhana or letter writing daru. Another number that featured Krishna again was the Ashtapadi wherein the dancer is depicted as Virahotkantitha and suffers from the pangs of separation and waits anxiously to meet her Lord. Sanskriti was quite at ease enacting the varied 'sancharis'. Blessed with beautiful eyes, Sanskriti is capable of doing wonders as far as expressional dancing is concerned. A composition by Uttukadu Venkatasubbiah, 'Marakatha Manimaya' describes the romantic and playful Krishna and his dance with the Gopis of Vrindavana. Surprisingly, all the gopis think that Krishna is dancing with them and they dance with a lot of joy and happiness. This number concludes with the dance on the rim of the brass plate in which the dancer executes various rhythmic patterns to precision. This number won applause from the audience.

Anita Ratnam presents her new work - CIRCLES OF LOVE (part of Mudra Dance Festival 2014) – focusing on mothers, using ancient and contemporary poetry, spoken word interludes and familiar references from cultural memory to trace the outlines of what it means to be a mother who is eternally fragile and part of a cycle. Anita portrays the woman as a mother, giver of life, psychic gardener, caretaker of lives and terrifying protector. These are some of the character arcs quilted by Anita Ratnam in CIRCLES OF LOVE, a performance that weaves story, diary, movement and life into a living tapestry. As daughter, wife, mother and grandmother, the various shades of maternal joy and grief will be shared in an interdisciplinary performance from 7 pm on April 26 at The Experimental Theatre, The National Centre for the Performing Arts, NCPA Marg, Nariman Point.

Music launch this experiment. Kulkarni's 'Rooprangi Jugalbandi' gave the listeners an opportunity to listen to similar sounding ragas like 'Bhoopali' and 'Shudhkalyan' as also 'Yamankalyan'. In a normal concert of instrumental music we get to hear a raga in four stages. The first stage is 'alap' in which the raga is explored with a sense of freedom. The second stage is 'jod' in which there is a rhythmic pulse but no percussion. The third stage is 'gat' in which the percussion steps in. The last stage is 'jhala' which is played at a high speed and is a kind of a crescendo. Instead of sticking to one raga, Rupak kept switching between 'Bhoopali' and 'Shudh Kalyan' and 'Yaman Kalyan'. He was accompanied on the tabla by Thane-based tabla star Mukundraj Deo as also by Ahmedabadbased tabla artiste Prithviraj Mishra.

Director Chandrakant Kulkarni, and writers Ajit Dalvi and Prashant Dalvi are all set to hit the silver screen once again with 'Doosari Goshta', their second film based on the political graph of a leader after blockbluster 'Aajacha Divas Majha' is ready for release in 172 theatres across the Maharashtra on May 1. The film is directed by Chandrakant Kulkarni, while Ajit and Prashant Dalvi have shouldered the responsibility of the story, screenplay and dialogue. It is presented by Jigisha Creations and has been produced by Dr. Shailaja Gaikwad, Manjiri Hete and Prasad Mahadkar of 'Jeevangani'. The story revolves around a young boy from a lower caste who doesn't have an option but to resort to petty thefts to make both ends meet after he loses his father at an early age.

upak Kulkarni is a front ranking bansuri players of the country today. His stature as a bansuri player was acknowledged by the All India Radio last year when he was awarded the most sought after top grade by the central audition board based in Delhi. Kulkarni has been in the field of classical music for well over three decades. He has been a soloist and also figured in fusion experiments with eminent artistes like violinist Kala Ramnath and sitarist Niladri Kumar. The programme at Thane was in celebration of his completion of 35 years as a guru of the bansuri. His disciples like Varad Kathapur and Nilesh have already made a name for themselves as performing artistes. In this programme, Kulkarni presented music of a different kind. The title of the concert was 'Rooprangi Jugalbandi'. There was a clear connection with the name of the artiste which is 'Rupak'. As per this concept, Rupak engaged himself in a duet with his own self. The Mewati gharana maestro and renowned singer Jasraj had devised a concert format called 'Jasrangi Jugalbandi' about seven years ago. In this concert format, a male and female singer perform at the same time in their respective pitches two different ragas. Not all ragas could be sung in this concert format. Jasraj had identified a few ragas which could be thus presented. Singers Ashwini Bhide and Sanjeev Abhyankar have presented a number of such concerts. Later on, junior singers like Ankita Joshi and Krishna Bongane have repeated

Will the society get a truly modern hospital from their own money which they have donated generously and sometimes under emotional pressure to the Mutt? ARGAO: First-timers Bengaluru FC wrote a new chapter in Indian football by clinching the I-League title in their debut season courtesy a 4-2 away win over Dempo Sports Club here, with captain Sunil Chhetri fittingly netting the final goal. Needing a win to snatch the title ahead of other established teams, Bengaluru led from start to finish. They scored through Sean Rooney (2nd), Robin Singh (56th), John Menyongar (79th) and captain Sunil Chhetri (90+7). Dempo reduced the margin through Roberto Silva (82nd) and substitute Romeo Fernandes (89th). After Sean Rooney had given them a dream start in the second minute, there was no looking back. Dempo threatened a brief fightback but that was not enough to thwart Bengaluru. The win helped the Southern club accumulate 44 points and take an unassailable lead with one round still to be played. The likes of East Bengal and Salgaocar Football Club will play for the second and third spot. Bengaluru needed a win from any of their last two matches to emerge triumphant but in the end it was clear that they would not leave anything to chance. Robin Singh scored in the 56th minute to give his team a 2-0 lead. With ten minutes left to be played, Bengaluru put the issue beyond doubt when John Menyongar made it 3-0. There was brief fightback from Dempo as Brazilian midfielder Roberto Mendes da Silva pulled a goal back in the 82nd minute and Romeo Fernandes then scrambled home to make it 2-3. Coach Ashley Westwood was suspended for the game and assistant coach Pradyum Reddy took charge in the dugout. But Westwood had done enough in pre-match preparations to help his team sail through. They started with a flourish when Rooney gave them a second-minute lead. Captain Chhetri took a quick throw in to Robin, whose shot across the goal was met with glee by Rooney past a bewildered Dempo defence. Dempo did not have a single shot on goal for most part of the first half and goalkeeper Laxmikant Kattimani had to make a double-save to keep Robin quiet from a blistering quick counter-attack. All India Football Federation secretary Kushal Das congratulated Bengaluru FC on winning the title. "Congratulations Bengaluru FC.
Sunrisers face rampaging Kings XI Punjab S
HARJAH: Still smarting from their opening loss, Sunrisers Hyderabad will face the arduous task of taming a rampaging Kings XI Punjab when they lock horns in IPL-7 at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium here today. The Sunrisers suffered a last-over defeat to Rajasthan Royals when James Faulkner blasted two fours in
as many balls to chase down their modest target of 133 on Friday. The Hyderabad team failed to put up enough runs on the board as skipper Shikhar Dhawan and David Warner lost wickets after setting a foundation and they would look to not repeat the mistake against Punjab, who are on a roll with two wins.
Chennai Super Kings skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni scampers for a quick run during their match against Delhi Daredevils. CSK set a target of 178 for the Delhi side to chase. Suresh Raina top scored with 56 runs.
You are the deserving Champions. Enjoy the moment," Das stated. I-League CEO Sunando Dhar said: "They may have been the new entrants but have led the way and paved the path for all to tread in the future. Congratulations." By far the most impressive debutants in the National Football League/I-League history, the Jindal Steel Works (JSW) owned outfit clinched its maiden title sans big names, a much sought-after success formula in Indian football. "We could have gone for the moon. But that was never going to be the way we wanted to go about it. However, we are on the moon at the moment," club consultant Mandar Tamhane said. Of the goals scored by BFC, 20 have come from the boots of Chhetri and India International Robin Singh
struck six times. Thoi Singh (4) shares the second largest chunk in goals netted along with Australian striker Sean Rooney (9). "Breaking the bank balance is not a success formula. We wanted to strike a balance between player's salary and spending wisely on the other important things which are as important as buying Players," he added. "When we entered the fray there were not many marquee players we could choose from. The other clubs had already done their shopping and we were left with very few choices. At the end of the day, I am happy that we did not go for the big names." What is also significant is that barring Chhetri most of the players who shone bright, were not in the wanted list of many clubs prior to the start of the season.

‘Hurts to lose but we will be back’
SHARJAH: His fine half-century went in vain against Kings XI Punjab, but Rajasthan Royals' young batsman Sanju Samson says he is not the one to cry over one setback for too long and would be aiming to finish off games for his team in the coming IPL matches. Samson's 52 was overshadowed by Glenn Maxwell's blazing knock of 89 as Kings XI Punjab chased down a formidable 193-run target. "The wicket was supportive to the batsmen and the match was always alive even after getting 190-plus on the board." Sanju Samson told IPL's official website. "It was that kind of day for our opposition when everything went their way, and credit to them for the way they played," he added. The 19-year-old said he felt happy to contribute to his team's cause. "I have always loved to play for Rajasthan Royals and I am very happy that I contributed from my end to help the team get to a formidable total. But it hurts that we lost the match after playing so well," he said. "This year, I want to finish more games for the Rajasthan Royals. I want to play according to my game plan. I have been successful in doing that so far. I am playing according to the opposition and choosing the bowlers that I want to attack," he added.
Maxwell credits good run to some luck, some manipulation! S
HARJAH: He has taken the IPL by storm with a couple of brutal knocks but Kings XI Punjab's Australian import Glenn Maxwell says the mayhem that he causes with his bat is merely a bit of luck and his ability to "manipulate" fielders. Maxwell steered Kings XI Punjab to a second successive win Sunday night when he struck a blazing knock of 89 which came off 45 deliveries. This came after a his 95-run onslaught against Chennai Super Kings in his team's tournament-opener. "You don't expect to make two big scores like that in a row and I have had a bit of luck as well. Hopefully, the luck stays with me and I can keep making some big scores," Maxwell told IPL's official website. "I actually try to manipulate the fielders as much as I can. It depends on the bowler and the size of the boundary, which I try to target. I targeted the short boundary tonight and the wicket was holding up when they bowled slower
balls. At the moment, I have got something that is working for me and I am going to keep trying to do that as much as I can. It is just about batting the way you think you bat best and that is what I am trying to do," he added. The all-rounder said he has so far enjoyed the pressure of chasing down huge totals. "We have won chasing two big totals and we are pretty happy to be where we are at the moment. At the same time, we still have a lot to work in the nets. Our bowling and fielding has not been up to the mark in the first two games, but it is nice that the batting group can save them and get us over the line," he said. I don't get burdened by pressure. Pressure is something that you put on yourself. I put pressure on myself before a game or before I go out to bat. But once when I go out there to bat, I just enjoy it and have a little bit of fun. I look at the total and take it from there."

I was disillusioned with what happened in WC meeting: Manohar
MUMBAI: Former BCCI chief Shashank Manohar is "disillusioned" with the proceedings of the Board's Emergent Working Committee meeting which he had attended as a representative of Vidarbha Cricket Association. "I can't disclose what happened at the meeting. All I can say is I was disillusioned with the happenings. I had gone there with the purpose of cleaning up the image of the Board in public domain, but I was disillusioned," the 57-year-old Nagpur-based lawyer told PTI. Manohar was outvoted 14-1 at the meeting when hand count was taken for the nomination of R G Raghavan, ex-CBI director, as one of the three members of the panel that was formed (former cricketer Ravi Shastri and former chief justice of Kolatta High Court R N Patel being the others) by the Working Committee to probe into the spot-fixing and betting scandal in the Indian Premier League as per the Supreme Court's directive. Manohar had kept himself out of the BCCI matters after his term ended in 2011 and was succeeded by Srinivasan before attending his first meeting of the Board. The former BCCI chief had also opposed the name of Shastri because of conflict of interest as he's a Boardcontracted TV commentator and IPL Governing Council member. Prior to attending the meeting Manohar had lashed out at N Srinivasan, who has been forced to step aside as the Board president, saying the Tamil Nadu strongman was "shamelessly and stubbornly" sticking to his post. Gurunath Meiyappan, son-in-law of Srinivasan and alleged former team principal of IPL franchise Chennai Super Kings, owned by India Cements in which Srinivasan is the MD cum Vice Chairman, had been named as one of the accused in the scandal by Mumbai police. On April 16, the Supreme Court, at its last hearing of the case, said Srinivasan's name was the 13th in the enclosed list submitted along with its report by the apex-court appointed Justice Mudgal Committee, which had probed the scam. The names of Shastri, Raghavan and Patel would be submitted for approval of the Supreme Court which is hearing the IPL scandal, with the next hearing scheduled today. The SC had directed the BCCI at the last hearing on April 16 to suggest names of persons who will conduct a "fair probe" into the IPL 6 spot-fixing and betting scandal. The apex court is expected to consider the suggestion by the BCCI and pass orders on the future course of the probe.

Patel should disclose if he is related to Shivlal: Pawar
M
UMBAI: Former BCCI chief Sharad Pawar wants Justice J N Patel, who is part of a three-man probe panel set up by the Board to investigate the IPL corruption scandal, to come clean on his reported links with the body's interim President Shivlal Yadav. He also deprecated the presence of former India captain Ravi Shastri on the inquiry committee, citing conflict of interest. "I think Patel should definitely disclose if he is related to the BCCI's interim president Shivlal Yadav. If not, then BCCI should clarify and should not allow these type of discussions," Pawar told PTI in an interview. The names of the former Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court, Shastri and ex-CBI director R K Raghavan were approved by the Board members at an emergent working committee meeting here yesterday. Their names would be submitted for approval of the Supreme Court which is hearing the the IPL scandal, with the next hearing scheduled today. The SC had directed the BCCI at the last hearing on April16 to suggest names of persons who will conduct a "fair probe" into the IPL 6 spot-fixing and betting scandal. The apex court is expected to consider the suggestion by the BCCI and pass orders on the future course of the probe. "I don't know him (Patel) personally, but I think it is his duty to disclose if this news (information) is correct," Pawar said. "This morning, I got a call from some BCCI member that there is a judge J N Patel. I know he was a very upright judge when he was here. He had taken very tough responsibilities and had performed very well."But the issue which I was not aware of. Somebody rang me up from Andhra Pradesh this morning, saying the BCCI's interim president Shivlal Yadav and Patel are close relatives. Brother-in-law or something like that. I don't know. said, "I don't think Modi has done any harm. Unfortunately, about Srinivasan, I haven't got any details. But whatever action has been taken recently was essentially taken by judiciary. It was the Supreme Court which said that 'A' should not be there and that 'B' should be there. There were certain complaints and judiciary felt that these complaints should be investigated," Pawar said. Pawar talked in glowing terms about Srinivasan's predecessor Shashank Manohar, who was once part of the NCP chief's core team which overthrew Jagmohan Dalmiya from BCCI. Pawar called Manohar him a good administrator. "Manohar is a good administrator. He has no personal interest. His genuine interest is in the game. I accept that whatever he says will always be in the interest of the game. Manohar's performance as an administrator was in a very straight forward and transparent manner," he said. Though bedevilled with myriad problems since its inception in 2008 when he was the BCCI chief, Pawar was upbeat about the future of the cash-rich IPL. "I think IPL is doing well. I have not been able to follow it because of these elections. IPL is a product developed by India, by the BCCI when I was its presi-
tice Patel's reputation, he will not allow this type of a thing," he added. Pawar, a former president of the International Cricket Council, also questioned the eligibility of Shastri to be a member of the probe panel because of the conflict of interest issue as the player-turnedcommentator has got a financial contract with BCCI. "Ravi Shastri is a good player. In fact, when I was BCCI chief (200508), we signed a contract with him and Sunil Gavaskar. So, he had a financial contract with BCCI. Now, someone says how can a person who has got a financial contract with BCCI, become part of an inquiry committee of BCCI chief," he said. "I have no reservation about Shastri's integrity, his honesty. But definitely, anybody can raise the issue. And that is why, a sensible person will try to keep away from this (probe panel)."Asked if Shastri should disso-
dent," Pawar said. "IPL has been accepted by the global cricketing community and all cricketing countries are part of IPL, which is watched not only in India but outside too," he said, adding, "This is the great contribution of Indian cricket and BCCI."

Sindhu, Srikanth lead Indian charge at Asian Badminton C’ship N
EW DELHI: With ace shuttler Saina Nehwal giving the tournament a miss, teen sensation P V Sindhu and national champion K Srikanth will spearhead the Indian challenge at the USD 200,000 Asian Badminton championship which gets underway at Gimcheon, Korea today. Olympic bronze-medallist, Saina, who won a bronze at the 2010 edition, decided to take rest to focus on the Thomas and Uber Cup next month and it will now come down to Sindhu and Srikanth to keep the tricolour fluttering. The 18-year-old Sindhu, who won the Malaysia Open and Macau Open last year, will start her campaign against Cheung Ngan Yi in the women's singles but she has a tough task ahead as she is likely to
meet Japan's Eriko Hirose next. If the Indian crosses the hurdle, the World Championship bronze-medallist will fancy avenging her India Open loss to Shixian Wang, the top seed in the tournament. In men's singles, it would be an interesting clash between seventh seed K Srikanth and two-time Olympic champion and five-time world champion, Lin Dan, who is set to play only his second tournament this year after making a comeback at the China Masters Grand Prix Gold in Jiangsu, China last week. The Chinese, also known as 'Super Dan', made a successful return to international badminton as he won the China Masters last week, beating compatriot Houwei Tian in straight games. Srikanth,
who has gained the reputation of a giant killer, had troubled world number one Lee Chong Wei in the semifinals of Singapore Open and he would look to use his experience against the world's best player. "I played him two years back in Thailand. So I would be playing him for the second time. I am excited. We all know what a fantastic player he is. He just won the China Masters last week," Srikanth told PTI. "I am just looking to enjoy the match. I will just go there and give my 100 per cent. The last match against Lee Chong Wei in Singapore boosted my confidence. I am playing well. In that match, I made a few mistakes only in the end so I ll try not to repeat those," added Srikanth.

MESSI WINNER MAINTAINS BARCA’S TITLE HOPES
M
ADRID: Barcelona maintained their slim chances of retaining their La Liga title as they came from behind to beat Athletic Bilbao 2-1 at the Camp Nou. Aritz Aduriz's opener five minutes into the second-half yesterday had Barca on course for a fourth consecutive defeat in all competitions. However, the Catalans showed fine spirit to respond as two goals in as many minutes from Pedro Rodriguez and Lionel Messi handed them all three points. Victory lifts Barca into second place, two points ahead of
Real Madrid having played a game more, but still four points adrift of leaders Atletico Madrid with four games remaining. Defeat for Athletic also hots up the race for fourth place as the Basque side now lead Sevilla by just three points with the two sides set to meet next weekend. After a difficult 10 days which saw his side eliminated from the Champions League, lose the Copa del Rey final to Real Madrid and see their title chances dented by defeat at Granada last weekend, Barca boss Gerardo Martino hailed his players
resolve. "In the first half I was thinking it would be one of those days because it is not normal that a team has so many chances and doesn't score. They kept playing and with a lot of heart in a difficult situation. More than just playing good football, which they always do, they showed a lot of courage and heart." And Javier Mascherano insisted they have to keep the pressure on Atletico and Real to ensure they remain in a position to take advantage of any slip ups in the final month of the season. "We need to cling on to the little chance we
have, there is no point in the two teams above us slipping up if we don't win our games," he told Canal Plus. "We are missing a lot of chances. Once again we had to come from behind, but that is the attitude that we have to show. We played well albeit we found it difficult to score." Barca had the majority of the chances early on as Pedro wasted the first opening of the game as he placed his shot too close to Gorka Iraizoz before the Athletic goalkeeper also smothered an effort from Messi.

Walsh targets top 8 finish in hockey WC
NEW DELHI: With the World Cup just round the corner, Indian men's hockey team chief coach Terr y Walsh is realistic about his ward's chances and said his main "objective is to finish in the top 8" in the mega-event and anything higher than that will be a "big bonus". Fresh from a preparatory tour to Europe, Walsh however believed India can climb up to the top six position by the end
of 2014. "The World Cup is the second most important event after the Olympic Games. So every team is going to be prepared. Our objective is to finish in the top 8 and should we finish higher than that it will be a big bonus," Walsh told PTI in an interview after returning from a tour to The Hague, The Netherlands where the World Cup will be held from May 31 to June 15. "But I think by the end of the year, by the time we get to the Champions Trophy we should be shooting for a top 6 position in the world. I think that's very realistic," he said.
BARBADOS: West Indies pacer Kemar Roach has escaped with minor injury following a nasty car crash on a rain-lashed Bridgetown road. Roach was reportedly speeding away when his BMW car flipped over several times before landing in the 3Ws park. The 25-yearold suffered a head injury and was taken to hospital, the Barbados Today online newspaper claimed. Roach took to Twitter a few hours later after the accident to reveal that he was recovering and in good health. "Sorry To Scare My Friends, Family And Fans But I'm Straight! Adhiban holds Kasimdzhanov to stay in joint lead
SHARJAH: Grandmaster B Adhiban continued to stay in joint lead after holding former world champion Rustam Kasimdzhanov of Uzbekistan to an easy draw in the fourth round of the Asian Chess Championship here. The draw helped Adhiban take his tally to 3.5 points out of a possible four and the Indian continues to lead the tables along with with Yu Yangyi of China and Ehsan Ghaem Maghami of Iran. The day was dominated by hard-fought draws and not much changed in terms of standing. Yu Yangyi and Maghami also signed peace and there was no decisive game on the top five boards. Indian Grandmaster Abhijeet Gupta, however, suffered a shock defeat at the hands of Al-Sayed Mohammed of Qatar in a game that should also have ended in a draw as well. With three leaders in front on 3.5 points, there are as many as 13 players sharing the fourth spot on three points each including Indian Grandmasters V Vishnu Prasanna, S P Sethuraman and G N Gopal.
Need to be patient and relaxed to win away from home: Lahiri
KUALA LUMPUR: Looking to win his first Asian Tour title outside the comfort zone of home turf, Indian golfer Anirban Lahiri says he just needs to be patient and relaxed to achieve the target. The 26-year-old finished tied 10th at the star-studded Maybank Malaysian Open yesterday and he was also part of Team Asia, where he contributed two points, to tie with Europe in the inaugural EurAsia Cup here last month. Lahiri won three of his Asian Tour titles on home soil and his results in recent weeks have given him added motivation to win his first title outside. "It has been a while since I've been playing well. I feel like I'm playing well enough to win. I just need to be patient and relaxed. I can't get too far ahead of myself. That's what I've learnt from last week," said Lahiri.
