he Oshiwara police investigating the death of a 56-year-old NRI businessman who died after falling off a high rise on Sunday evening, said that they have found a person who met the deceased, Punyakant Phillip Raju on

the 27th floor of the high rise minutes before he was found dead. A senior official from the Oshiwara police said, “The boy met Raju while the latter was seated at the window of a 27th floor apartment. He asked Raju the reason for sitting there to which Raju said that he needed some fresh air.”

“Raju also asked the boy if there was a mobile network issue in the building after which the boy went his way. It is slightly difficult to believe the boy’s statement as he has come forward three days after the mishap. We are probing all angles”, said the official. Officials said that when they

briefly questioned the Oman resident’s family, they said that he had not been depressed and that he had no reason to commit suicide. The police are, however, yet to officially record statements of Raju’s wife and children who arrived in the city from Continued on pg 8 «

Do you think keeping guards at ATM will prevent crime? Aishwarya Wakkar, Student Along with the guards there should also be police patrolling at the ATMs; that would make them safer. Advait Lele, Dancer No, I do not think so because, any which way there will be crimes happening especially in the night. Aditya Sudra, Singer Yes, guards at ATMs will be a great deterrent but the management must make sure that they are in the age group of 40-50 in order to stay active. “M

y career was never planned,” says Usha Uthup, when she’s asked if she always wanted to sing. “I was actually thrown out of class by my music teacher, Ms. Davidson. Because she knew I was always around her class, she finally decided to make me play the triangle or the clappers in the choir.” Any other child in her place would naturally be upset and disheartened, but being as optimistic as she is, Uthup was not really upset about the decision and actually continued singing as and when she pleased without hesitation. Before long, she found herself her first gig in Chennai, where she performed while on a family holiday and was an instant hit with the audience. Then on, there’s been no looking back. Since she’s had 44 wonderful years of singing, we ask her why she hasn’t considered teaching children singing. She laughs and says, “Teach them what? I haven’t had any formal training myself. I’ve learnt over the years through experience and all I can talk to them about is that. However, I have started workshops for young singers as well as experienced ones that want to learn about stagecraft. I love working with children and sharing what I’ve learnt over the years with them.” Living in Kolkata for several years has obviously made Uthup miss Mumbai. “There is so much I miss about Mumbai,” she says, “but in particular I miss the vibrancy and buzz. Being born and brought up in the city, I can’t help but adopt its principle of always being on the move.” Besides imparting her knowledge and experience, Uthup also supports various charities like V Care – a voluntary support group dedicated to provide free help,

The AIFWL was established in 2007 with an object of development of women lawyers and protection of rights of women and children through legislative reforms, legal aid and legal literacy programme. Chartered Accountants, Advocates, Trade, Commerce and Industry Associations, have failed to make out any formal grievance or representation to the concerned ministry under which portfolio this office comes. All new registrations, cancellations or changes in partnership documents, have been indefinitely held up, as without the online facet being fed, no changes are accepted in the hard copy, for cryptic reasons. Visitors to the office return disappointed at the inconvenience. As one aggrieved visitor remarked, “Does it take a month for security audit of a simple site? Surely our country has advanced by adopting information technology. Now they say it may start by December. The use of information technology was expected to expedite work, but this works out to the converse.”

Delivered nicely. Enough?

Monorail: Wadala to Chembur

Suyash Padate goes through the Chief Minister’s three year report card and tries to guess whether he has done enough to ensure his party returns to power in the state in the next elections

T

hree years ago he was labeled a night watchman, not only by the NCP but by many aspirants to the Chief Minister’s post within the Congress party. Today he has a strong grip over the government and also on the Congress party. Prithviraj Chavan who has completed three years in office last Monday, is in full command in the state. He has snubbed the aggressive alliance partner NCP and also managed to keep the dissidents in his own party at bay. Presently he is seen as a rescuer of the Congress party. Chavan, who spent most of his time in national politics was somewhat new to Maharashtra’s manipulation corridor. A mechanical engineer from Birla Institute of Technology and Science at Pilani and Master of Science from the University of California at Berkeley, Chavan returned to India in the mid-1980s after a successful stint as a technology entrepreneur in the US at the instance of the then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. After successfully contesting the Lok Sabha elections in 1991, he preferred to remain active in New Delhi. In spite of this, he has done reasonably well in difficult circumstances while running the show. He has virtually faced down all potential challengers within the party and made them almost irrelevant. Under constant attack for “policy paralysis” from several quarters including Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar, Chavan has never succumbed to pressure tactics. Repeatedly he has clarified that he won’t clear files in haste, that too of personal work or those relating to transfers and land allotment, but will continue to take decisions in the larger public interest. Totally ignoring alliance partner NCP, he has stuck to his transparent style of functioning. However, the fact remains that during the tenure of this clean man, the pace of administration has slowed down. Chavan’s pet projects, including the Navi Mumbai international airport, mono and metro rail, Mumbai makeover, and the Jaitapur nuclear project, continue to run behind schedule. Chavan used all his clout in New Delhi to get clearance to the Navi Mumbai international airport. The initial tempo was not seen in the later

stage. He made a full-fledged attempt to pacify villagers in the vicinity of Jaitapur who are vociferously opposing the nuclear project. But the initial momentum took a backseat after some time and now most of these projects are going to have to be kick started. When it comes to attracting investors to underdeveloped Vidarbha, Marathawada and North Maharashtra, a similarly lackluster approach has been the norm. The government should have undertaken this task aggressively, especially when Maharashtra’s supremacy has been challenged by several states including Gujarat. But the Chavan government has failed to address the contentious issue of high power tariffs for industry. As a result investors have stayed away. Yet, given the coalition compulsions, there is a limit to what he can do. While the overall economic situation across India looks very tough and full of uncertainties, there are a couple of infrastructure projects that are nearing completion

Eastern Freeway: Orange Gate to Chembur in the state. This should spur some economic activity and revive the optimism needed to finish many other long-pending projects that have still not got past the drawing board. According to Chavan, this year the government will commission projects worth Rs.5,000 crore. This includes the first phase of the metro rail and mono rail. The safety trials of these ambitious projects are being done. The Sahar elevated road and Santacruz-Chembur link will also get completed. A lot of transportation infrastructure is falling in place in Mumbai this year. Due to the volatile economic situation and galloping interest rates, the government did not succeed in awarding a BOT contract for the Mumbai trans-harbour link and instead, a cash- contract basis is being mooted. The second phase of the Mumbai metro, which could not get clearance from the Union Ministry of En-

gressive NCP on the back foot. Chavan also brought about muchneeded transparency in the urban development ministry, which is considered by many to be the source of big-ticket corruption in the state. He has broken the nexus between politicians, bureaucrats and builders to some extent. He removed the discretionary powers to grant extra floor space index (FSI) from politicians and bureaucrats. Now anyone who is willing to pay a premium for extra FSI is granted it. This simple decision has added over Rs.1,500 crore to the coffers of the state government and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The capable administrator was seen during the recent drought of 2012-2013, handled so well that despite a little over one-third of the state being hit, no farmer lost any cattle to scarcity of water and fodder. Most significantly Chavan’s personal interests in health and infrastructure sectors have yielded good results. The unique blood-on-call scheme, under Metro trial: Versova to Azad Nagar which volunteers dispatch desired vironment and Forest, will now have to blood to the needy in a short time, has be redesigned. But it is a fact that large received a good response. The state also infrastructure projects are on hold, has managed to bring down the Infant thanks to the falling value of the rupee Mortality Rate and Maternity Mortality Rate with improved health facilities in and the overall economic situation. Maharashtra will be able to achieve 7 the rural areas. Mumbai got better inper cent growth due to a good monsoon frastructure in last three years. The city and robust agriculture growth. The State got 7 flyovers, 37 skywalks and 12 roads has always grown one-two percentage at a collective expenditure of Rs 2,800 cr. Will this be enough to ensure victory in points more than the national average. There will be a slowing in the industrial the ensuing Lok Sabha and Assembly elecsector but it will be compensated by the tions?. He is facing a huge challenge to retain power and next year will be a sort of growth in the services sector. A major political achievement of Cha- litmus test for Prithviraj Chavan who has van as CM is that he managed to rein in delivered nicely in last three years. the NCP. For instance, the NCP had a Whether this is enough remains to be seen. stranglehold on Maharashtra State Cooperative Bank, and used this influence to control politics in the rural part of the state. Within a year of Chavan taking over as Chief Minister, the board of directors was dissolved for various irregularities. An administrator was appointed on the bank, virtually clipping the wings of NCP. Another example of political strength is the irrigation scam that shook the entire state. The economic survey of 2011-12 revealed that despite spending Rs.70,000 crore on irrigation projects in the previous decade, the state’s irrigation potential increased only by 0.1 per cent during this entire period. NCP men headed the irrigation ministry. The Deputy Chief Minister, Ajit Pawar was at the helm of the Irrigation department for eight years. The surfacing of this scam put the usually-ag-

Pond in Kalina Campus has filthy water with 12 ft tall infected grass; the smell and the mosquitoes make things unbearable for students By Yatin Ingle

W

hile the Mumbai University (MU) has already received a notice from Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to fill its swimming pool, it seems there is some more work for the varsity. This pond in the Kalina campus has grown 12 ft high infected grass. The stinking water in the pond has become the breeding ground for mosquitoes. The place where the pond is situated was earlier a gathering spot for students but now the place is best avoided. The pond was built by the varsity in the year 2007 at the instance of former Vice-Chancellor Dr Vijay Khole. This pond is adjacent to the teaching department and the canteen. Students have complained that the mosquitoes in the stinking waters have been making it increasingly difficult for them to attend lectures. Yesterday, the ADC visited the pond and found out that the 15-feet deep pond, now looks like a field growing infected grass. A student who did not wished to be named told the ADC, “We have to attend lectures in a building which is adjacent to this pond. The stinking water and the insects have

Conviction rates fall as Mumbai Police faces manpower crunch By A Staff Reporter

of the 1,002 sanctioned posts and 1,319 PSIs for the sanctioned 3,125 posts. PSIs and APIs are the ones who are actually trained to probe crimes. With such a huge shortage of PSIs and APIs, it is little wonder that chargesheets are not being filed for lack of investigation into crimes," founder trustee of the NGO Nitai Mehta told PTI. "This is one of the reasons why conviction rate in 2012 was seven per cent, which is three per cent down from the previous year. This encourages criminals to carry out more offences," he claimed. According to the data gathered through the RIT, there has been a sharp rise in crime against women, as rape cases increased by 57 per cent (from 187 cases to 294) and molestation cases increased by 43 per cent (from 554 to 793) during 2012-13. Chain snatching incidents have come down to 1,269 which is 22 per cent less compared to last year.

30 year-old software engineer has been arrested by the Oshiwara police for rape after his fiancée filed a complaint against him. The victim has alleged that the accused has raped her 14 times over the last few years under the pretext of marrying her, while he was already set to marry another woman in Delhi. The 27-year-old victim, a

resident of Lokhandwala in Andheri (West), met the accused Amrutanshu Shekar on a matrimonial site. When they exchanged information, Shekar told her that he was from Delhi and was working as a software engineer in a leading company in Mumbai and living in Powai. After spending some time with him, the victim told her parents about Shekar and her intention to marry him. As per her demand, the victim’s parents invited Shekar to their residence and spoke to him about marrying their daughter. However, the victim was surprised when one of her relatives from Delhi informed her that Shekar was set to marry a girl from Delhi and that his family was already distributing wedding cards. Naseer Pathan, Senior Police Inspector, Oshiwara Police station said, “On the basis of a complaint filed by the victim, we have arrested Shekar from his residence in Powai and booked him under Section 376. The girl has been sent to a civic run hospital for a medical examination and Shekar will be produced before the court on Friday.”

After rounds of sustained interrogations the police managed to arrest one of the fake cops, Ayub Rehman Khan (36) while his accomplice identified as Raghu Sawant is said to be absconding. Not ruling out the possibility of the gang for their involvement in crimes using a similar modus operandi, Senior Police Inspector, Dinkar Pingle said, “Apart from luring their targets into the honey trap, the gang also operated a prostitution racket. We can’t rule out more victims who may have coughed up money to redeem their esteem and fearing defamation.” A case under sections 385 (extortion), 170 (Impersonating a public dervant), 324 (Voluntarily Causing Hurt) and 34 (Common Intent) of the Indian Penal Code has been registered.

promising sexual situations and blackmailing them for money. Four persons including three women and a fake cop have been arrested in this connection. According to the police investigations after a complaint from Vinod Agarwal (56), a Goregaon based real estate agent was lured to a flat in Bhayandar (East) by two women named Shilpa (32) and Savita (40) who sought his help in selling their flat to potential buyers. In his complaint to the police, Agarwal stated that he was lured to a flat in Shruti Palace where Shilpa escorted him to the bedroom and forced him to get into a comprising position. The male members of the racket, in the guise of moral police, immediately barged into the house, clicked objectionable photographs and demanded Rs.1 lakh under the threat of registering a case of involvement in prostitution activities. “When I expressed my inability to give into their demands, the amount was scaled down to Rs.25,000. After much persuasion they allowed me to go and return with the money. The women then began calling me up for money and threatened to circulate the photographs, following which I registered a

2 civic officials arrested for demanding bribe By A Staff Reporter

T

wo people including an Assistant Registrar of Co-operative Societies who allegedly demanded and accepted a bribe from an advocate have been arrested by the Thane unit of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB). They had allegedly demanded a bribe of Rs 24,000 from a complainant, advocate Balasaheb P Chavan of Belapur, to register a housing society, Deputy Superintendent of Police B.K. Shelke told PTI on Thursday, adding that they were caught while accepting the money. The names of those arrested are Assistant Registrar Sudam L. Rokade and Assistant Cooperative Officer Gajendra B. Kumawat. Offences under the Prevention of Corruption Act have been registered against both, at the local police station.

Continued from pg 1 ÂŤ However, no casualty was reported. Fire brigade sent 8 fire tenders, 4 jumbo tankers, 2 water tankers, 1 light van and an ambulance. At Ambedkar Nagar, fire officials were seen struggling to take the fire tenders closer to the area in flames, which became difficult due to the lack of space between the shanties erected on bamboos half submerged in water. Finally, on the direction of the local ward officer, the fence of the BEST depot was pulled down to make way for the fire tenders. The blaze was extinguished within two hours and the injured were rushed to local hospitals. Ambedkar Nagar lies mostly in the mangroves and falls under the jurisdiction of the District Collector and the Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (MMRDA). Both authorities that come under the state government have grossly failed to protect this area which has been declared eco-sensitive. Local ward officer, Devidas Kshirsagar said, “Despite adverse conditions and a hostile terrain, fire brigade officials reached the spot and successfully extinguished the fire.â€? At Wadala, the fire, according to officials, broke out in a 30 feet x 40 feet temporary accommodation, where wooden furniture, electric wiring and other luggage were charred in the blaze.

Pamper terrorists, penalize residents Continued from pg 1 ÂŤ in the case of naming the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) Kandivali Club House, tweaked the rules. He wanted to know why the government could not do the same in case of the Campa Cola Compound residents. He said that in matters of terrorist attacks, the court of law keeps the nabbed terrorist alive for years together. But when it comes to the question of saving the homes of the residents of Campa Cola, the same law becomes insensitive. In a direct affront to the judiciary, Uddhav contends that morality no longer exists in the judiciary. If at all morality had been there in the judiciary, then the judiciary would not have found itself in the

situation it finds today. Uddhav further adds that a committee has been set up to probe allegations of sexual assault against a judge. Then why no committee was set up on the basis of the same logic in the case of Campa Cola Compound residents? In the meanwhile, Chavan once again reiterated his stand that the government would not bring an ordinance to save the illegal flats of Campa Cola Compound in Worli.

WAS IT MURDER? Continued from pg 1 ÂŤ USA on Monday. The police said that a possibility of it being a suicide is less and it is suspected that Raju either accidentally fell off the high rise or was murdered. “We recreated the crime scene by throwing a dummy off the 27th floor. It landed in the same spot where Raju did. If Raju were to be pushed with force, he would have landed on the road outside the buildingâ€?, said the official. Raju had come to the city two days before his death and had been looking for property. He had visited the Oshiwara-based 28-storeyed Lashkariya building around 10.30 am on Sunday and had approved a duplex flat through the apartment’s broker who has his office in the building’s basement. He had told the broker that he would return in the evening with his financer and finalise things. Accordingly, he entered the building at around 5.55 pm on Sunday (recorded in its visitors’ diary). His body was found in the building’s basement at 6.20 pm.

Pawar, who sees women’s reservation will be equally important to regain voters’ confidence, revealed that both the Prime Minister and Congress president have agreed to take up the bill in the Lok Sabha. esidents of a building, which had developed cracks and was tilting, were on Thursday shifted out of the premises in Diva town of Thane district to prevent any mishap. The disaster control cell of the Thane Municipal Corporation sprung into action immediately after getting a message about the fivestorey Vishnu Kala building being in bad shape, and evacuated the premises by shifting over 65 families living there. The building, which is around six-year old, houses as many as 66 tenements and 11 shops and has three wings. The TMC officials were verifying the details of the building, located in Ganesh Nagar locality of Diva. According to officials, the affected families have been shifted to transit camps for the time being. The authorities are in the process of pulling down the dangerous building to avoid any eventuality. The move comes close on the heels of a building collapse in Thane's Kalwa town on Monday in which lives of several people were saved as they vacated the premises minutes before it came crashing down. Residents hold a meeting to decide on the next course of action.

relations again re-established by Dr. Singh were a ‘re-set’; “But what now?” it asked. The Prime Minister’s visit, the paper noted, “has succeeded in resetting relations after the Depsang incident, but a lot more needs to be done.” Commending the signing of the Border Defence Cooperation Agreement and the Transh-border Rivers Agreement, the paper warned they were “not signal achievements by any measure” but looked like “a beginning”. India and China, the paper added, “should not be rivals”. The Hindu (Oct. 25) acceded that the Border Defence Cooperation signed during Dr. Singh’s visit to China “is without doubt a constructive step towards resolving the border dispute” but it pointed out that the BCCA it-

MEDIAWATCH M.V. Kamath self “is not a game-changer”, though it added to “the existing layer of confidence-building measures” and “indicates both New Delhi and Beijing have accorded high priority to preventing hostile incidents along the Line of Actual Control.” The paper said that “by opting for a tempered agreement Dr. Singh has chosen to play his hand cautiously in an election year.” The paper referred also to the Stapled Visa issue calling it ‘dangerous’, as also to the trade imbalance, insisting that “India must also ensure our exporters gain a stronger foothold in the Chinese market.” Writing in The Economic Times (Oct. 27), The Times of India’s Diplomatic Editor, Indrani Bagchi said that while the “PM has left the bilateral relationship (between India and China) in better shape than he found it, challenges remain. The existing peace, she said is ‘fragile’ and will take “a lot of maintenance”. Bagchi advised the PM that while China will “continue to throw surprises at India”,

India on its part must “deal with them without feeling devastated.” But for all the support that Dr. Singh has got from the media, there have also been critics who have written with no holds barred.

Looking beyond Manmohan Thus, writing in The Indian Express (Oct. 29) Jayadeva Ranade, a member of the National Security Advisory Board and former Additional Secretary to the Cabinet Secretariat pointed out openly that “as anticipated, the visit was high on hospitality but short on tangibles.” Diplomats, he said have been seeking “to exaggerate the importance of the trip” while the 11-paragraph Joint Statement issued on October 23 “indicated that there was limited, but apparent forward movement on the border issue”. He said the provision that “the two sides agree that they shall not follow or tail patrols of the other side in areas where there is no common understanding of the line of actual control…. is ambiguous.” Ranade said that “for the third time in a row, India withheld routine recognition of Tibet as an inalienable part of China in the joint statement. Also, he stressed, “results in the economic agenda were mixed with no progress on the issue of a Free Trade Agreement or, as the Chinese refer to it, the Regional Trade Agreement”. Importantly, Ranade said “Singh’s visit signalled that India was keen on peace and tranquillity along the borders and was not teaming up with the US against China”. However, Ranade noticed that while China’s leaders conveyed their interest in peaceful borders, accompanied by interest in economic interaction, they yielded no ground on key, substantive issues”. Similarly, Harsh V. Pant, also writing in The Express (Oct. 26) pointed out that while “trade imbalance with China is growing and remains unsustainable… the recent visit yielded little on that front.” Sharply critical of the visit, Pant, who teaches at King’s College, London, said that “as this government’s term comes to an end, the lesson for future Indian governments is that a weak Prime Minister at home cannot deliver abroad.” Whatever Dr. Singh may have in his mind, Pant said “his domestic weakness continues to follow him”. Actually, Pant added, “The Russians and the Chinese, the Americans and the Pakistanis are now looking beyond Manmohan Singh,” waiting to see who will succeed him. So much for that trip.

Bengaluru ATM attack THE recent brutal attack on a 44-year-old woman inside a Bengaluru ATM shows that the ATMs in the city of Mumbai are also not safe as the ones in Karnataka. It has been observed that there is no security guard or only one inside an ATM counter without any weapon in the case of attack or robbery. Despite all the ATMs being fitted with CCTV cameras, the big question is whether they are monitored or not? The woman named Jyoti Uday who was attacked by an unknown person with a machete at an ATM in Bengaluru was left bleeding for more than two hours and the entire incident was captured in the CCTV camera but due to cost cutting the bank does not employ security guards which they used to do in the past and the CCTV cameras only give the evidence of crime and does not prevent it. It is high time for the bank officials to take this matter seriously and make sufficient arrangements for safeguarding the interests of the customers at the ATMs. — Bhagwan Thadani, Mumbai

THE attack on the Corporation Bank officer at an ATM in Bengaluru raises pertinent questions: One, the attacker, when apprehended, may get bail which he could jump, while the lady is now paralysed for life. Two, the Indian Banks’ Association should think of installing a biometric device that will open the door only for the card holder and shall immediately shut once the customer is inside. Third, an alarm button should be fitted inside all ATMs that will emit a very loud siren when pressed. Fourth, the roller shutters should be designed with better security in terms of opening/shutting. The one at the Bangalore ATM was an ordinary one. MUMBAI | FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 22, 2013

the goDs Often touted as the drink of the gods, wine is a welcome visitor at gourmet dinners, fancy brunches, romantic evenings and cheery meetings with friends and is definitely a staple for the festive season. Rhea Dhanbhoora & Dev Goswami get you in the mood for this with some products, picks, tips and wine festivals to visit

S

ome tipplers like the acetic hit of a robust flavour, while others prefer a fruity bouquet with a mellow tint. But, both types of drinkers have one thing in common — they love wine. It may be a beverage intertwined with the history of the Western world, with the Greeks even having a God dedicated to wine (Bacchus), but us Indians have cultivated a fine palate for the fermented grape drink and have even begun to produce a few fine varieties! Artists, writers, politicians, businessmen… everyone loves a good glass of wine. In fact, Martin Luther loved it so much, he said, “Beer is made by men, wine by God!” and we’re inclined to agree with him.

Nikhil Agarwal, sommelier and director at All Things Nice, adds, “The world of wine is large and it would be difficult to put it all down in an article. I could mention 100 grape varieties, but in my world the only way you can learn about wine is to drink it. Only by constant interaction with wine are you able to create a memory bank of aromas and flavours associated with various grape varieties and regions.” We totally agree! But, before you head out on your wine sojourn, let’s take a look at what types of wine you can indulge in, which wine festivals to visit, whether you’re an oenophile or a casual wine drinker, along with a few fun facts and what Nikhil thinks are the best wines across the world:

Fun FaCts

the types oF wine

l Grapes ferment by themselves, if you leave them (warm) in a jar long

Understanding the types of wine is an inexhaustible topic. Nikhil explains, “There are numerous grape varieties, each with its own unique quality. The same variety will have the basic characteristics, but will be different based on the region it is grown in.” He lists some popular varieties (along with the top countries that produce them) to get us started on our journey to understand and enjoy wine:

enough. The reason wines are made in a vineyard is because the wine resulting from this process is obviously not a good one. l People first started realising the health benefits of wine when it saved people from diseases caused by bad water. The natural fermentation kills bacteria. l Why do good wines still have corks? It’s the best way to know about the quality of a wine. A cork that is moldy, fragmented or falling apart means the wine probably isn’t that good either. l If you’re wondering why two glasses of wine show so much faster on a woman than a man — it has nothing to do with capacity. Women have less of an enzyme that is used to metabolise wine, which makes them more easily affected by it. l All wines don’t improve with age! More than 90% of wines actually taste best within a year of being bottled. The rest are collectibles that are specifically made to age well. l If you want to know how old a wine is, here’s a simple test. White wines get darker as they age while reds get lighter.

Wine basics

Food Pairing

Nikhil gives us a few wine basics that will help make your wine experience better: l White wine can be had at about 11-12°C and red wine between 16-18°C. Serving wine at an incorrect temperature can kill the experience. l An extremely important part of wine drinking is the quality of the glass. Improper glassware or badly washed glasses can ruin the nicest wine. In fact, there are companies that produce glasses as per the grape variety! But, for a beginner, you don’t need to take it to that level; you will get to that stage naturally. l More expensive isn’t always better. Remember that your preference in wine depends on your taste. The more you experiment with different styles of wine, you will realise what you like and what you dislike independently. Don’t blindly follow price as the only factor when judging the quality of a wine.

Pairing wine and food has become quite popular. Nikhil says, “I believe that when wine and food are matched, it is a recipe for pure gastronomic happiness. However, the notion of wine and food pairing is being taken a little too seriously. The rule you should follow is that you make your own rules.” Sommelier at Hakkasan, Chinmay Barve has another tip, “Wines are paired in two ways, wine and food which complement each other or wine and food which is contrasting to each other. Example — spicy food can be paired with light refreshing New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc or a ripe full bodied Chilean Merlot”

gLobe trotting Wine Drinking and enjoying wine is a personal experience. So, drawing up a definitive list of the top wines is not easy. Nikhil agrees, saying, “Taste is personal and can change based on the occasion or simply the time of the day.” So, instead of getting a list of top wines, we get Nikhil to give us his list of favourite, luxury red (he prefers red) wines from across the world:

india: Fratelli Sette 2010 (I will specify the vintage here, since it is dramatically different from its first vintage 2009) France: Chateau Margaux, Bordeaux, italy: Sassicaia, Bolgheri australia: Henschke Hill of Grace ( Shiraz), Eden Valley chile: Montes Purple Angel (Carmenere), Colchagua Valley

« event Adore MelA an aTTempT To empoWeR Women Adore Charities presents the Adore Mela, an event to support a good cause and give back to society. This year, the focus is on being able to create a platform through which women empowerment is achieved. The thought behind the process is to be able to provide a space where women who have fought the odds and created a livelihood for themselves and their families are recognised and made to feel empowered. The event also exists to help other women become self-sufficient and independent. This year, women across the spectrum will be participating in the event. Amongst the stalls this year, you will find Nuzhat, a patient of cerebral palsy displaying handmade jewellery and

Varsha, who is partially blind, who has homemade beauty products and organic sharbats. Also, Rehmat Bi along with other girls from the Govandi slums will skillfully man the mehendi stall. Pinky Thakker, the founder of the event says, “The Adore Mela is aimed at women empowerment and works towards making them strong, both economically and socially. We will be providing stalls for women who need a platform to showcase their talent to make them self-sufficient and to support their families. We will have approximately 35 stalls this year and are doing our best to ensure that we offer the best facilities that there are, along with the maximum coverage possible.” Adore Charities, formed in 2001, has made several attempts to give back to society by empowering the lesser privileged. Adore Mela is another one of their efforts to help those in need secure themselves a respectable living through the sale of products such as handicrafts, organic beauty products and handmade jewellery. Also part of the event is a books, toys and games collection drive. The proceeds of the event will help those libraries that aren’t adequately equipped. « store review: shopawholic

>> Shopawholic has trays, toys, food and treats for your furry friends

Shirley Mistry pays newly opened, Bandra based pet store Shopawholic a visit, to see how they fare in terms of catering to your pet related needs

I

thought I’d walk into this store and be completely surrounded by charming displays and cute merchandise. While I have to say that Shopawholic ranks rather high on the cute quotient, it also has a comprehensive range of products to meet your every pet need as well. Catering mostly to cats and dogs, the store also stocks products for birds and other animals such as hamsters. This outpost was started by Victor D’lima last month, but, they seem to have a strong fan following already. In terms of décor, the store is basic, albeit functional. Rows of pet products on display, meticulously organised category wise, are bound to excite even those who are weary of animals. This first thing you notice, is that the store doesn’t cater to one need, but has a more holistic approach. A quick look is enough to tell you that they stock a variety of toys, treats, hides, bones, wet & dry food, leashes, collars, supplements and grooming products — from teeth wipes and shampoos to anti-skid socks and cleaning liquids. Toys start as cheap as `80 and go up `3,000. With brands such as Animal Planet, Chomper, Kong and Hartz on offer, your pet is spoilt for choice. They also stock certifiably nontoxic toys. Right from toys for puppies who are teething to plush toys, ropes and gel toys, the variety is staggering. If you’re in the mood to pick up a special treat, they have an array of products. The Sausage Treat priced at `60 and the >> They have an impressive collection of certified non-toxic toys for your pet

Hot Dog treat (`125) caught our eye instantly. What dog doesn’t like a bone? They also stock Nutra Gold, 100% holistic food for dogs, by American giant, Diamond, priced at an average of `1,200 for three kilos. The right blues? Find out why Priyanka Singh thinks that Road House Bluez can be your ideal, reasonably priced hangout in Andheri

W

hen it comes to first impressions, Andheri restobar Road House Bluez’s newly opened upper floor ticks three very important boxes. With the blues genre in their name, it would have been disappointing if their playlist wasn’t up to the mark. But here, one of the co-owners, DJ Willis, curates a playlist of all forms of rock and blues every 45 minutes. Here’s where they got our first tick. Their menu is pasted on vinyl look-alike spherical shapes, which is innovative (second tick). The third tick is for the décor — dominated by an orange backdrop and wooden furnishings, after all, who wouldn’t like legends such as Johnny Cash and The Beatles spread out on the wall? But, did Road House Bluez get a tick in our very important food box? Let’s find out. We started with two cocktails — Musk Melon Mojito (`281) and Pear’s Daiquiri (`281). The mojito was a refreshing rum

>> (Clockwise from bottom left) Saltwater Café has a well-stacked bar and you must try their sangria. The Pan Charred Scallops were divine. Their Prawn + Calamari and Roasted Duck starters are sumptuous, but the latter is a messy eat

second innings They say the original is always the best. Rhea Dhanbhoora finds out whether that holds true for Saltwater Café, that recently opened its second restaurant in South Mumbai

G

litzy South Mumbai had more or less everything — but Bandra could still say they had the John Dory, pork salad and martinis of Saltwater Café. Not anymore though. Taking the place of a buzzing Mocha (and in turn cutting the area off from young blood, as we’re not going to see too many teenagers at Gaylord across the road either), the warm, woody restaurant looks swanky from a distance. And, swanky it is. They have almost everything that the Bandra branch has, minus pork, which is sorely missed. If you can drown out the sound of loud groups of ladies, dressed to the nines and adorned in blinding bling, the ambience can be quite calming. It’s surprisingly full on weekdays, weekends and even as early as 8pm on a Tuesday night. We started off with a delicious Pomegranate & Thyme Martini (`450) and a Coffee Bean & Tiramisu Sangria (`500), which is surprisingly potent, but needs a little more coffee and tiramisu to really deliver on its flavourful promise. While you’re sipping on your drinks, you can browse through the menu without dealing with turning pages or holding it up, because it also serves as your table mat. Our starters included a tasty Roasted

Duck + Romaine + Water Chestnuts + Wild Rice Granola (`410) salad. It was tasty, but if you’re on a date, you might want to skip this unless you’re skilled at shovelling extra large pieces of lettuce into your mouth, or cutting it up in a slippery glass bowl. The duck was cooked well and the chestnuts added a nice crunch. The pomegranate seeds didn’t interfere with the dressing, but the wild rice granola was not as light as it should have been. The most memorable dish here is the Prawn + Calamari + Coriander + Lime + Ajilo (`390). Order two, three… four of this if you have to — we couldn’t stop looking longingly at any table that had this dish after we were done fighting over the gravy. While at the Bandra outlet, I wouldn’t dream of missing the pork mains, but this menu was missing some of those choice dishes. We were recommended a Grilled Rawas (`510) and I picked the Pan Charred Scallops (`1,350) to see how they fared compared to the ones I’d sampled at their first outlet. The rawas was a surprise, sitting pretty in the middle of a citrus coulis and plumped on top of a delicious pile of mash. The scallops were just as good as the dish in Bandra. They weren’t too chewy or too mushy and you’ll be left licking your lips to

finish every bit of the miso butter. The glistening cappellini was too heavy for me to finish, but the slinky noodles were very well spiced. While we were waiting for dessert, we sampled their famed Chocolate & Tangerine Martini (`450) and their Watermelon Martini (`450), of which the watermelon is the better, more refreshing pick. Desserts here are a work of art. In fact, our server accidently smudged a bit of the coffee powder fork on our Tiramisu plate on his way over to our table and actually went back and got us another one — even though we told him it wasn’t necessary. The Tiramisu (`280) was fantastic, but the reason it stood out was because it was served with the most delicious tiramisu ice cream we’ve ever had. In fact, we think they should start serving it separately too. The Crème Brûlée (`230) was also nice; the tuile was a bit chewy, but the crisp caramelised layer atop a perfectly set custard makes it a good dessert. The crowd can be uncomfortable if you want to head for a good meal in jeans and a t-shirt. You’ll have to dress to impress here. We’re comfier at the Bandra outlet, but we searched as hard as we could to find something else wrong with this restaurant — and fortunately, we came up empty.

>> We loved Road House Bluez’s interiors (top). Their Aglio Olio Creamy Chicken Pasta was delicious (inset) based drink, but we would have preferred fewer musk melon pieces in it. The vodka based daiquiri was nothing exceptional, but the balance of vodka and the sourness of the pear was great. For starters, we ordered Kung Pao Potato (`235) that was too spicy and Jalapeno Chilli Poppers (`245) — average, but devoid of any chilli. The saving grace was the Chicken in Oyster Garlic (`240) — a delicious low-calorie dish with boiled chicken as its star ingredient. Our main course comprised of Shantung Rice (`245), which had Chinese sauces given an Indian twist with a pleasant, sweet aftertaste to it. The thin crust vegetarian pizza (`330) was light and goes well with the drinks as a starter too. The Aglio Olio Creamy Chicken Pasta (`255) was delightful, with generous chicken pieces thrown in and the perfect amount of cream. While the food at Road House Bluez is not exceptional, if you want to visit a decent place in Andheri either to listen to good music or to watch matches on the big screen, this resto-bar will not disappoint you. They have pocket-friendly weekday deals that you must check out. Also, they serve popcorn on the house and another bowl promptly appears before you can finish the first one! That might be enough to make Road House Bluez a favourite for cash strapped youngsters.

MUMBAI | FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER NOVEMBER 03, 22, 2010 2013

Australian pop sensation, Lenka is going to be performing in the city this weekend as part of the Divas of Rock concert. Rhea Dhanbhoora talks to her about the performance, her inspirations, her latest album and being a new mum

I

f you’re humming along to the headline, you’ll be as excited as we are to hear that alternative pop singer Lenka is in Mumbai. There’s a distinct creative energy you can’t miss when you listen to her music or watch her quirky videos and songs. Her music will soothe you and make you want to dance at the same time — there’s a magical quality about Lenka that we can’t draw ourselves away from. The cheery Australian singer, whose song Everything At Once was recently used for the Windows 8 commercial, will be performing this weekend as part of Vivanta by Taj’s annual property, Divas of Rock. We talk to the new mum about working through motherhood, her new album, Shadow and what she loves best about Mumbai on her first visit to the city. First off, let me just say — we’re so excited that you’re here in Mumbai and we can’t wait to see you perform! Are you equally excited to be in the city? Thank you so much! It feels so great to receive so much love. Since this will be my first performance in India, I am really thrilled and looking forward to engaging with the crowd. You burst onto the music scene with The Show and now we’re all humming along with Everything at Once, the Windows 8 commercial — tell us a little bit about that journey? I was initially approached by the China branch of the company for the Windows 8 association. They asked me if they could use my song and video for their commercials and I thought it would be a great opportunity! I believe it works in my favour as not only does Windows 8 have amazing products, using my song also helps me reach out to a new fan base. So, I would like to think of it as a bonus! Is it difficult to travel and perform so much now that you have a baby? Motherhood has changed everything! My singing is the same, but the songs are softer and sweeter for the baby. Quinn [Lenka’s son] actually likes upbeat music, so that is what I am writing again, now that he’s a toddler. My perspective as a songwriter has changed. I want to pass on some of my wisdom to my child’s generation. Have you eaten Indian food yet? Yes, of course! I love tikka masala, like most westerners. It really is delicious. I’m looking forward to trying proper Indian chai.

Divas of rock A unique platform for talented female musicians, Divas of Rock at Vivanta by Taj hosts a number of great musicians every year. This year, they’re bringing Lenka, who will be performing in the city for the first time. The concert is in association with VH1, Sony Music and blueFrog. When Saturday, November 23 at 10.30pm Where blueFrog, Lower Parel Tickets `1,000 from www.bookmyshow.in

What do you think of Bollywood and Indian music? There is an Indian restaurant we go to that plays Bollywood films. They are so over-the-top! Very impressive and magical. I think you need to know the stories to enjoy the music. It’s an obsession in India I hear... We all have our favourite Lenka tune. What is yours? To be honest, this keeps

changing, but currently my favourite song is Like A Song, from my first album. How would you describe your music and where do you draw inspiration from? Most of my songs are soothing and quiet. I like the way my songs can make an individual feel relaxed and dreamy. As an artist, I think it is essential for me to contribute by providing my listeners with songs that can help

The lenka file studied acting at The Australian Theatre for Young People and starred in a number of TV shows such as Home and Away and Spellbinder. l She was also in a number of feature films such as The Dish and Lost Things. l She was a member of Australian electronic-rock crossover band, Decoder Ring before becoming a solo artist. l She is married to visual artist James Gulliver Hancock who helps create her eccentric videos.

put them at ease at the end of the day. I owe my inspiration and voice to Björk. I believe that’s the reason why my songs’ characters come through. It is because of my love for Björk. Tell us about your new album. Was it a challenge to make or did it just flow? Shadow is my third album and first as an independent artist. This album is very close to me as it was written and recorded while I was pregnant. Creating an album can never be a challenge for me as since my acting years, I have always loved to sing. Do you want to say anything to your fans before the show? A big thank you for liking my music and welcoming me into your beautiful country. I am really excited and look forward to seeing you soon! What can we look forward to next from Lenka? I am currently writing songs for film and TV projects and hopefully, I will be releasing another album by next year!

Markets Turn Weak

NSE India: CNX Nifty — Daily Market Report for: Friday (November 22, 2013) (Based on the activity of the previous trading day) by Dominic Rebello

REVIEW OF THE PREVIOUS DAY: The Nifty fell substantially on Thursday (November 21, 2013) a net 123.85 points (2.02%) and closed at the 5999 point level. The Nifty remained below its previous close throughout the session, moved in a range of 112 points and closed just below the psychologically important 6000 points level. Sentiment was extremely bearish and amongst the 50 Nifty stocks 48 were losers, while just 2 stocks closed in the green. All the sectoral indices closed in the red. Substantial selling was seen in banking, capital goods and realty stocks. TECHNICAL ANALYSIS: Volume: Volume (Qty shares) decreased 19.86%. Amongst all the traded stocks, 429 were gainers, 952 were losers and 59 remained unchanged.

Launch of new products, tie-up with Mohan Breweries and Distilleries (MBDL) and rising geographic reach would help Tilaknagar Industries (TIL) to report a healthy volume growth of 22.6% over FY13-FY15E, at 20.7mn cases, as against a growth of 4.1% in FY13. Rising share of premium brands through the tie-up with MBDL, price hike and higher volume from the launch of new products would help EBITDA per case to rise 7.6% in FY15E after a decline of 19.5% likely in FY14E. The Pernod Ricard (PR) tie-up would generate income of Rs 2,546mn over the next four years and improve cash flow, while moderation in capex after an investment of Rs5.4bn over FY07-FY12 would reduce the leverage and improve return ratios. After muted net profit growth of 5.7% in FY14E, healthy 13.8% / 34.4% volume/net profit growth, 119ps/187bps improvement in RoCE/RoE, respectively, and likely positive operating cash flow in FY15 would lead to a re-rating of TIL. We have assigned Buy rating to TIL with a TP of Rs83, based on 8.5x/13.6x FY15E EV/EBITDA and P/E, respectively. Laying the foundation for volume growth in brandy segment: Against a 58.9% volume CAGR over FY07-FY12, TIL grew by a mere 4.1% in FY13 because of policy changes in Tamil Nadu, one of its largest markets, accounting for 17% of its FY12 sales. Following the recent tie-up with MBDL, TIL may get access to bottling capacity (7.80mn cases per annum) for manufacturing premium brands in Tamil Nadu, increasing the sale of premium products by 1.5mn cases over the next 15-18 months. Coupled with higher growth from new brands and their launch in newer territories, we expect the brandy segment to report volume growth of 42.3% / 10.7% in FY14E/FY15E, respectively. Geared for healthy volume growth: TIL launched four brands over FY11-FY13. White House Rum, launched in FY13, is set to become a millionaire brand in FY14, and Mansion House Whisky posted a 150% growth in FY13. Bottling pact with PR provides sufficient cash flow: Under the mega project status, TIL would get VAT (value added tax) refund for sales effected in Maharashtra to the tune of Rs 2,546mn, i.e. investment made in its Shrirampur facility in Maharashtra over the next seven years, starting from April 2012. Sales volume of PR brands from the Maharashtra plant would increase from a mere 0.02mn cases in FY13 to 2.4mn cases in a phased manner, thereby improving cash flow from VAT refund. We have arrived at a DCF-based valuation of VAT benefit at Rs 1,649mn, or Rs13.4 per share.

Angel Broking calls a ‘Buy’ on Sadbhav Engineering CMP: Rs. 73

Target Rs. 90

For 2QFY2014, Sadbhav Engineering (SEL) reported a mixed set of numbers. SEL posted a disappointing set of numbers on the revenue front, owing to the onset of monsoons; however owing to tax credit of ~Rs 18.7cr during the quarter, earnings were above our estimate. SEL has an order book of Rs 9,241cr (4.6x trailing revenues) as of 2QFY2014, which provides good revenue visibility. Tax reversal boosts bottom-line: On the top-line front, SEL reported a revenue of Rs 375cr for 2QFY2014, a growth of 12.2% yoy, but was significantly lower than our estimate of Rs 443cr. This was mainly on account of pick up in pace of execution in the remaining under-construction projects (mainly Chhindwara project, which contributed ~Rs 150cr). On the margin front, EBITDAM came in 10.3%, an increase of 96bp on a yoy basis, and higher than our estimate of 10.1%. Interest cost grew by 20.2% yoy to Rs 21cr, which although was lower than our estimate. On the bottom-line front, the company reported a PAT of Rs 28cr (above our estimate of Rs 6cr) for 2QFY2014, registering a growth of 340% yoy. This was mainly due to tax credit of ~Rs 18.7cr during the quarter. Adjusting to this, the PAT came in at Rs 10cr. Outlook and valuation: The Management has given a revenue guidance of Rs 2,500cr for FY2014. It expects the recently won BOT projects– Gomti-kaChauraha, Rohtak-Hissar and Rajsamand-Bhilwara to contribute to the E&C revenue. Given the healthy order book (4.6x trailing revenue), we expect the company to report revenues of Rs 2,458cr and Rs 2,727cr for FY2014 and FY2015 respectively. We continue to maintain our Buy view on the stock with a SOTP based target price of Rs 90, owing to robust order backlog of Rs 9,241cr (4.6x trailing revenues), strong balance sheet and on the expectation that the company would be able to meet the equity requirement for its underconstruction/development projects through internal accruals or securitisation. Supreme Court Bars Sahara Chief Subrata Roy From Leaving The Country By A Business Reporter

T

he Supreme Court on Thursday restrained Sahara Group chief Subrata Roy from leaving the country. The top court also barred the group from selling any of its properties. The development comes in the wake of market regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) on Wednesday telling the Supreme Court that Sahara had overvalued its properties and did not hand over all original title deeds of assets worth Rs. 20,000 crore as per its direction. "It is a mockery of our order if it has been complied with in this way," the court had said on Wednesday and posted the case for hearing today after Sahara sought adjournment on the ground of non- availability of its counsel. The case pertains to two Sahara

Subrata Roy Group firms- Sahara India Real Estate Corp Ltd (SIREC) and Sahara India Housing Investment Corp Ltd (SHIC) raising around Rs. 24,000 crore through optionally fully con-

vertible debentures (OFCDs) in violation of public issue norms. The Supreme Court on November 1 allowed Sahara Chief Subrata Roy and two other directors to travel abroad, but said if the property title deeds worth 20,000 crore are not submitted to Sebi in three weeks Mr Roy has to come back to India. Sahara Group had filed an application seeking to rectify the alleged error in the order which barred group's head Subrata Roy and its two directors from going abroad till they submit original title deeds of their assets worth Rs. 20,000 crore to Sebi to cover investors' money. The court had by its October 28 order said that Mr Roy and his two directors against whom Sebi has moved a contempt petition will not leave the country till the market regulator has received the original title deeds and also examined them to its satisfaction and reported it to the court.

NCDEX Plans Gold Contract On Price Hedge As Delivery Is Tough By A Business Reporter

C

23

ommodity bourse NCDEX has moved a proposal with sectoral regulator FMC for launching a new gold contract focusing on price hedging as it feels delivery is not practical due to curbs on imports of the metal. NCDEX, which has pioneered a number of agri-contracts, now aims to expand to bullion and metals. “We want to 20-30 per cent of trade to come from non-agricultural items in the next 2-3 years. We are working on new products. We have submitted a proposal to FMC for launch of a new gold contract focusing on price hedging and not delivery, NCDEX Managing Director In-charge Samir Shah told reporters. When asked why the bourse is

not planning a delivery option to traders under the new gold contract, Shah said, “Delivery of gold after the settlement of the trade on the exchange is not practical in the current environment due to import restrictions on gold. “In such a situation, if you focus on delivery-based gold contracts, you might have the delivery of indirectly channelled gold on the exchange platform and create price disparity. There is a genuine problem, he said. The NCDEX chief added that gold delivery has come down even on MCX, which has the maximum participation in bullion and metal trade. “Gold delivery has come down on MCX. We never had liquidity in our gold contracts. Even if we had, we too would have seen delivery not happening, he said.

Amit Kumar to unveil Arjun Rampal: In sync with the times Pancham-da’s statue By Rajesh V. Gaur and Suneel V. Gaur

R

By Chaitanya Padukone

O

ne great legend deserves another! Senior acclaimed playback and pop singer Amit Kumar feels that it would be appropriate to gift Sachin Tendulkar with a CD-DVD of classic Bangla songs composed by the legendary Sachin Dev Burman. “That’s because, our batting maestro has been named after the sangeetkaar maestro Sachin-da,” enthuses the acclaimed singer, son of the iconic singer-actorcomposer-filmmaker Kishore Kumar. Meanwhile Amit-da is wholeheartedly supporting the zealous mission of his Kolkata-based ‘Amit Kumar Fans Club’ (with over 12,000 global members) which will unveil an exquisitely sculpted statue of the legendary R.D. Burman at a public avenue in Kolkata city on January 4 which is Pancham-da’s 20th death anniversary. Says Amit-da, “It’s a known fact that Panchamda (RDB) was my godfather and mentor, and having sung his composed soulful number ‘Bade Achhe Lagte

Hain’ from the yesteryear movie ‘Balika Badhu’, I earned my individual identity as a competent singer. It’s a huge honour for me to be a part of the commemorative occasion which will include live concerts in tribute of RDB.” Talking about his homeventure ‘KBM’, Amit says, With our new venture ‘KBM’, which stands for ‘Kumar Brothers Music’, the repertoire will mainly comprise thought provoking songs written by Leena-ji (Chandavarkar-Ganguly) and me, and sung by Sumit and me. My nine year old talented daughter Muktika will also sing for this new album ‘Baba Mere’, where with ‘special effects’ she will be shown dreaming of and meeting her grandpa Kishore-da. There is this haunting song ‘Zindagi Dard Hai’ written and sung by me in a deep bass voice which is immensely popular on the net. Recently, I recorded this hard-hitting playback song for veteran director Kundan Shah’s upcoming movie which has a strong political undercurrent. As we say, the Kumar show must go on.”

ajiv Rai’s ‘Pyaar, Ishq Aur Mohabbat’ (2001) may have bombed at the box office, but launched Arjun Rampal’s acting career. Post its release, Arjun received multiple movie offers and his last bunch of films: ‘Inkaar’, ‘D-Day’ and ‘Satyagraha’, earned him rave reviews from critics. The Arjun Rampal we see today is a far cry from the He is more confident, extremely choosy about his roles and directors and does not think twice about doing a side role that is meaty. One look at his choice of films, and one can see that most of them are with directors of repute and require him to don a rather serious avatar..“I think filmmakers like Prakash Jha and Sudhir Mishra have noticed that I want to push the envelope. There is an element of surprise that I want to offer di-

rectors,” smiles Arjun. What made him sign multistarrers like ‘Rajneeti’ and ‘Satyagraha’ where he had to share screen space with other big stars? “I was never apprehensive about these films,” he says. “Prakash Jha was sure that I would fit in well. Also, I wanted to work with him and I am happy

to have done the films. I think my performances in these, came across very nicely. Prakash Jha and I we have been working together for a long time and get along well. There is a definite understanding that has developed between us probably because he likes to work with his actors in a way where he can mould them and make them do different stuff. Moreover, he also gives us freedom that allows us to do the job right.” Meanwhile, he is also looking forward to his films ‘Yahan Ke Hum Hain Sikandar’, ‘The Legend of Kunal’ and ‘Rock On 2’, set to arrive in 2014-15 and featuring him in prominent roles. “Yes, at times I may play a lead, while at others I might be a part of the supporting cast. However, I have to play my part well as an actor. In any case, I look at a film in totality. I have always believed that the only central character in a film is the film itself,” says Arjun.

I’m not competing with Madhuri in ‘Dedh Ishqiya’: Huma Qureshi

F

or Huma Qureshi, working with her idol Madhuri Dixit in upcoming film ‘Dedh Ishqiya’ was a dream come true, and the actress says that she never once felt insecure about sharing screen space with the Bollywood diva. The 27-year-old actress and Madhuri are the new additions to the Abhishek Chaubey directed sequel to 2010 ‘Ishqiya’. The film will see Naseeruddin Shah and Arshad Warsi reprising their roles of Khalujaan and Babban from the original film. Huma says that right from the time she signed the film till finishing it, she was aware of her part and the makers never let her feel like a second lead in the movie. “Mad-

huri is the quintessential heroine of all time. There is a lot of pressure when you are working with her. But, she made it really easy for me. When I decided to sign on the film, I knew exactly what I was doing. So there was no apprehension or insecurity. I had a great team, a great director, who never once made me feel that I was the second lead,” Huma told PTI in an interview. “And most importantly, I never thought that I was competing with her. I think it is a huge compliment for me that I am starring alongside her in the film,” she said. ‘Dedh Ishqiya’ will hit theatres on January 10 next year.

Sachiin Joshi The Great Gambler By Sandeep Hattangadi

S

achiin Joshi has been appreciated for his work in ‘Azaan’ and ‘Mumbai Mirror’ and is now waiting for the release of his third film ‘Jackpot’. We had a brief and candid chat with the star who recently married actress Urvashi Sharma.

How did you portray the character of Francis? Did you have any reference points? Francis in ‘Jackpot’ is a simple man with simple ambitions. However, the idea of hitting the jackpot drives him to take on danger that he hasn’t thought out therefore creating some interesting thrilling, comic and romantic moments between him and his romantic interest Maya (Sunny Leone). What was it like working with Naseer and Sunny Leone? I am happy our film will see the actor in Sunny and showcase it. Naseer saab is a legend. Sharing screen space with him was amazing.

How is Kaizaad Gustaad as a director? Kaizad is a very calm and composed director who has this amazing ability of storytelling. His films have style and class besides amazing content.

Are there many steamy scenes between you and Sunny Leone? All I can say is that Sunny Leone fans will not be disappointed.

What are your forthcoming films like? Right now the focus is on ‘Jackpot’. The next starts in February. But I will update you about that at the right time.

Who are the directors you would like to work with? Everyone with a great story to tell. My passion is movies and I want to do good films.

t may or may not be true— everything that appears in the media these days is to not to be taken seriously—but trade pundits have alleged that the boxoffice figures of ‘Krrish 3’ being bandied about are inflated.

RINGSIDE VIEW Deepa Gahlot These days, anything is possible, in the sense that anything can be planted in the ever-obliging media — there are always various levels of quid pro quo in play. But, the worrisome thing is not whether this or any other film made the massive amount of crores it claims to have, but that rivalry among stars and production houses has become so absurd, that flaunting figures is the only way of validating their work. First it was a 100 crore weekend to be aimed at, not 200

aif Ali Khan, who will be next seen playing a rustic outlaw Raja Mishra in Tigmanshu Dhulia‘s upcoming film Bullett Raja, was quick to point out at an event that the film is an action film and not a violent film. Talking about the film, Saif said, “There is a difference between an action film and a violent film. If you look at any of Bruce Lee‘s movies, they are defined as action movies and not violent movies. There is grace in motion in those action scenes and people don’t think about violence when they watch such films. Similarly, ‘Bullett Raja’ is an action film and not a violent film.” Apart from Saif Ali Khan, ‘Bullett Raja’ also stars Sonakshi Sinha, Jimmy Sheirgill, Chunkey Pandey,Gulshan Grover, Ravi Kishan and Vidyut Jammwal.

ment types who understand nothing but business. Now it’s an oft-repeated phrase in the industry, “We are not here to create art, we are here to make money.” It is understandable that for any art form to survive, it has to be commercially viable, but not to the extent that it ceases to be art. Cinema is as much a medium of expression as it is a means of entertainment and the two cannot, or should not, be completely separated from each other, or the result is overblown, derivative, soulless cinema, that doesn’t last beyond the first three days either in the cinemas, or in the memories of audiences. In the past, commercial cinema used to be accompanied by a defiant parallel cinema that told stories it believed in and wanted to create an alternative space for audiences whose tastes were not totally corroded by mainstream junk, but now space for this parallel cinema is also shrinking; people may want to see it, but can’t mind. ollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan has enough charm to sweep any woman off her feet, but it seems that when it comes to his own daughter Suhana, the superstar’s dimpled smile is not enough. Taking on his Facebook page, the King Khan said, “Going for a coffee date with my daughter. She was reluctant but finally my charm worked. Basically I begged and used emotional blackmail...!!” SRK is said to be quite fond of his daughter and in a past interview, he had also revealed that his daughter bullies him and scolds him as and when he does something that she doesn’t approve of.

BOLLY BRIEFS Sunny wants to direct a film again

ACTOR Sunny Deol, who had made his debut as a director in 1999 with ‘Dillagi’, seems to be keen to get behind the camera once more. In an interview, Sunny said that he is itching to direct a film and that he is keeping his directorial plans on hold for a couple of years. However, Sunny said that he has not decided on any particular subject yet and that he will choose whatever subject strikes him at the time. Sunny will be next seen playing a honest Collector in Anil Sharma‘s ‘Singh Saab The Great’, which also stars Urvashi Rautela, Amrita Rao and Prakash Raj and is slated to release on Friday.

Ranbir wanted to be a part of ‘Highway’

IMTIAZ Ali, who had teamed up with Ranbir Kapoor for the highly appreciated ‘Rockstar’, will be helming upcoming film ‘Highway’, which stars Randeep Hooda and Alia Bhatt and if sources are to be believed, even Ranbir wanted to be a part of the project. It seems that when Ranbir saw the initial rushes of the film, he was quite impressed and excited about the film and requested Ali to let him be a part of the movie, even if it was a small role or a cameo. However, Ali was determined to not let the film turn into a ‘starry affair’ at the cost of the content and hence, reportedly turned down Ranbir. Ranbir will be next seen in Anurag Kashyap‘s ‘Bombay Velvet’ and Anurag Basu‘s ‘Jagga Jasoos’.

Anurag Kashyap to act in ‘Bhoothnath Returns’

AMITABH Bachchan and Anurag Kashyap, who were last seen working together in the latter’s short film ‘Murabbathat’ featured as one part of ‘Bombay Talkies’, will soon be sharing screen space. Apparently, the makers of the upcoming ‘Bhoothnath’ sequel have roped in Anurag to essay the role of a director in the film. Making it a first, the duo will be seen sharing screen space where Bachchan plays the part of the benevolent ghost haunting a dilapidated bungalow. ’Bhoothnath Returns’ directed by Nitesh Tiwari also features Boman Irani and commences shooting next Wednesday.

OCHI: Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma hit sparkling halfcenturies as a clinical India continued their domination over West Indies by thrashing the visitors by six wickets in the opening ODI of the three-match series, here today. Asked to bowl, spin duo of Ravindra Jadeja and Suresh Raina exploited the low and slow conditions of the Nehru Stadium wicket effectively to bundle out West Indies for a meagre 211 in 48.5 overs. Kohli then smashed 86 off 84 balls, while Rohit made 72 off 81 balls to help India chased down the target with consummate ease in 35.2 overs and take a 1-0 lead in the series. Kohli decorated his knock with nine boundaries and two huge sixes, while Rohit’s innings was laced with eight hits to the fence and one over it. India, however, received a jolt early on in their chase in the form of Shikhar Dhawan (5). Dhawan departed in the fourth over as he edged a back of a length delivery from Jason Holder to Johnson Charles behind the stumps with scoreboard reading 17. But then Rohit and Kohli joined hands and shared a 133-run sec-

HENNAI: His title defense in tatters after suffering another loss, world champion Viswanathan Anand today said he was left with little choice and decided to go for the kill in the ninth game as he had to drastically change the course of the match. Going into the ninth game today with a two-game deficit, Anand said he had to give it a shot.“In general, the match situation did not leave me with much of a choice. I had to give it a shot, I saw a couple of moments where I could exit but I decided to give it a shot. It seemed very dangerous for black,” the defending champion said. The Indian ace mentioned it was a moment of excitement that led to the blunder. “In a sense it was irresponsible or silly but I spent about 40 minutes on this move and then I suddenly saw his response. And for a second I got excited with this knight move (which was the blunder) and simply missed. As soon as I played the knight move I saw what I had done,” the Indian conceded. Explaining the match situation, Anand said he had no regrets about his choice of opening.

bowling in the next over. Kohli, however, was in no mood to get bogged down by the dismissal as he continued his attacking game. With India needing just 26 runs to win, Kohli clobbered Holder over the square-leg boundary to bring up his 5000 runs in the 50over format in just 114 innings and become the joint quickest to reach the landmark along with West Indian batting legend Viv Richards. But Kohli perished in the very next ball in search of one too many as, looking to loft the ball straight over the bowler’s head, he mistimed a shot to Sunil Narine, who gleefully accepted the skier.Next in, Suresh Raina’s woeful form with the bat continued as he went for a duck, handing an easy catch to Holder at point off Narine’s bowling.Yuvraj Singh (16 IN THE RUNNING FOR HONOURS: India’s Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli run not out) and skipper Mahendra into form yet again with splendid knocks. Anand loses again, Carlsen set to be be new king By Vishal Sareen

C

HENNAI: Challenger Magnus Carlsen closed in on the crown after defeating defending champion Viswanathan Anand in the ninth game of the World Chess Championship match here today. On what turned out be a dramatic affair, Anand missed out on his chances in white pieces and suffered a painful defeat that almost sealed the fate of the match. Carlsen now leads 6-3 and needs just half a point from the remaining three games to become the new world champion. It was a Nimzo Indian defense that Carlsen chose as black and Anand, realising well that this was his last chance for a strike, went for the Saemisch variation. Anand had used this system before, in World Championship match against Kramnik and later in a gem of a match against Wang Hao of China. Carlsen showed some signs of nervousness in the early stages of the middle game after he went for a line that is not favoured in top level chess. Anand got his chances by way of a King-side attack while Carlsen pushed harder on the other flank. The position in the middle game looked very dangerous for Carlsen but with precise calculations, he kept himself in the game. Even till the end of the game,

STANDING TALL: Magnus Carlsen rises to the occasion with another win against Vishwanathan Anand and needs only a draw to become the champion. Carlsen’s queen and one Bishop remained on the initial squares as mere spectators to the proceedings, while he defended his position with all available resources. On the 22nd move, Anand had about 25 minutes more than Carlsen and optically dominating position, but the Norwegian world number one had calculated that his King was guarded against any checkmate threats. On the 23rd move, Anand spent nearly 40 minutes and decided to continue the attack instead of equalising once again. This was more to do with match situation as Anand had things under control but another drawn result would not have improved

the match situation. Carlsen found the best possible moves from this point and Anand simply blundered on his 28th move by moving his knight to a check coming from a new promoted queen. Another move would have helped continue the game but this was certainly not Anand’s day. With just a draw needed, Carlsen should be able to take home the title in the 10th game itself when he gets white pieces. “We got a very sharp position from the opening, basically I missed something with the pawn rollers, it was really a very tough game,” Carlsen said after the game.

IN BRIEF Assam call shots against Tripura

AGARTALA: Assam produced a fine pace bowling display to take the upperhand over hosts Tripura at the end of opening day's play in a Group C Ranji Trophy match, here. Opting to field, Assam rode on the exploits of its pace trio of skipper Abu Nechim Ahmed (3/37), Arup Das (4/34) and Pritam Das (3/49) to bundle out a listless Tripura for 136 in 55 overs. Middle-order batsman Abhijit Dey was the lone bright spot for Tripura, scoring a fine 54 off 131 balls which was decorated with 10 hits to the fence. At stumps, Assam were 85 for one in 32 overs in their first innings in reply to Tripura's dismal total. Dheeraj Jadhav was batting on 40 off 87 balls and giving him company was Sibsankar Roy on 15.

Rajasthan dominate opening day against Railways

JAIPUR: Rajasthan had Railways on the mat as they rode on Pankaj Singh's three-wicket haul to reduce the visitors to 223 for seven on the opening day of their Group B Ranji Trophy match. Shivakant Shukla (54) and Nitin Bhille (60) were the only batsmen to make significant contributions as Railways crumbled in face of a disciplined collective effort by the home bowlers. At stumps, wicketkeeper Mahesh Rawat (27) and Anureet Singh (4) were holding fort for the visiting side. Railways were dealt an early blow when opener V Cheluvaraj became Pankaj's first victim after making just five runs. But the Railways settled down after that with Shukla and Bhille combining to add 117 runs for the second wicket. While Shukla's knock came off 168 deliveries, Bhille was equally patient in his 177-ball stint at the crease.

Prasanna’s ton as TN post 258/7

MEERUT: Ramaswamy Prasanna scored an unbeaten century as Tamil Nadu overcame early jitters to reach 258 for seven at the end of the opening day's play in their Group B Ranji Trophy match against Uttar Pradesh. He later joined hands with A Aswin Crist to put on another crucial unbeaten 79-run stand for the eighth wicket. Uruguay reach World Cup after Jordan draw

MONTEVIDEO: Uruguay became the final team to qualify for the 2014 World Cup after grinding out a 0-0 draw in a gritty battle with Asian minnows Jordan. After Uruguay thrashed the Jordanians 5-0 in the first leg in Amman last week, a capacity crowd at Montevideo’s famous Centenario Stadium had looked forward to seeing a full-strength Celeste side produce a high-scoring send-off. However a fiercely committed Jordan frustrated the South Americans at every turn, defending in numbers and ruffling Oscar Tabarez’s men with a physical approach. It did not stop the Uruguayan players and their fans from erupting in wild celebrations at the final whistle as fireworks exploded above the stadium.Earlier, three Jordanian players picked up bookings during a game that restored some pride for coach Hossam Hassan after his team were embarrassed on home soil last week. Uruguay, the fifth ranked side in South America’s qualifying campaign became the last of 32 teams to qualify for next year’s World Cup in Brazil.

ONG KONG: Saina Nehwal’s poor run continued this season as she crashed out of the women’s singles competition after suffering a narrow defeat against Porntip Buranaprasertsuk of Thailand in the second round of the Hong Kong Super Series badminton tournament in Kowloon here. Seventh seed Saina, who improved a rung in the world rankings to be sixth, lost 17-21 21-9 15-21 to Porntip, who jumped three places to world number 10, at the Hong Kong Coliseum here.

Ajay Jayaram’s campaign in the men’s singles competition also came to an end after he went down 18-21 12-21 to Sony Dwi Kuncoro of Indonesia in a 36minute match. Olympic bronze medallist, Saina, held a 6-0 record against the Thai girl before the match but it counted for little during the 50-minute battle between the two shuttlers. Saina tried to dominate the nets but Porntip didn’t give her too many opportunities. She had all the answers to Saina’s smashes, four more than the Indian.

Sehwag fails yet again as Delhi struggle N

EW DELHI: Haryana bowlers produced a disciplined performance to restrict hosts Delhi to 184 for eight at stumps, on the first day of their group A Ranji Trophy encounter as India discards Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir yet again failed to post a big score. Put into bat on a seamerfriendly Roshanara track, Sehwag (3), Gambhir (29), Unmukt Chand (1) and Mithun Manhas (9) were all back in the pavilion before lunch to trigger a collapse from which Delhi couldn't fully recover. Although Rajat Bhatia (39) and Vaibhav Rawal (25) added 59 runs for the fifth wicket, Haryana's five-man seam attack maintained the pressure throughout the day by not giving away easy runs. For Haryana, left-arm seamer Sanjay Badhwar (4/56 in 19 overs) was

the pick of the bowlers while senior pro Joginder Sharma (2/32 in 17.2 overs) also troubled the batsmen with seam and swing. Punit Bisht scored a quickfire 33 with six fours and a six. All eyes were on Sehwag and Gambhir but they looked horribly out of touch as Joginder troubled them on a track that had good carry as well as movement after pitching. After Unmukt was dismissed, Sehwag walked out there in the middle in the very second over. The duo batted together for 10 overs but didn't for once were able to dominate the bowling. After playing 29 balls for his three runs, Sehwag edged an awaygoing delivery from Joginder to Nitin Saini behind the stumps. Sehwag now has 63 runs in five innings in Ranji Trophy and his dreams of an India comeback is getting bleaker by the day.

Brief Scores: Delhi 1st Innings 184/8 in 84 overs (Rajat Bhatia 39, Punit Bisht 33, Sanjay Badhwar 4/56, Joginder Sharma 2/32) vs Haryana.

STUART PUTS ON A BROADWAY SHOW B Afternoon Despatch & Courier www.afternoondc.in

MUMBAI | FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 22, 2013

RISBANE: England's Stuart Broad hit back at booing fans with a devastating fivewicket haul today but Brad Haddin's fighting knock kept Australian hopes alive in a compelling start to the Ashes Tests. Wicketkeeper Haddin and Mitchell Johnson came to the rescue after Broad, loud boos ringing in his ears at Brisbane's Gabba ground, ripped through Australia's top order on day one. The pair combined in a counterpunching 114-run stand for the seventh wicket before the outstanding Broad bowled Johnson (64) with the second new ball for his fifth wicket of the innings. Just before stumps, Australia lost another wicket when Peter Siddle was caught in the slips for seven off James Anderson 14 balls. At the close, Australia were 273 for eight and well short of what skipper Michael Clarke would have expected after winning the toss, with Haddin unbeaten on 78 and Ryan Harris not out four. It was Haddin's 13th Test half-century as runs came easily in the last session. Johnson racked up his eighth Test 50 with a booming boundary before Broad had the last word. If not for Haddin and Johnson's fightback, Australia would have been in a parlous state after Broad had struck twice in the morning session and twice more after lunch to have the home side teetering at 132 for six. Broad, who was vilified in the build-up for not walking at a key moment during the recent Ashes Tests in England, revelled in his bad-boy role. The boos rang out when Broad, branded a "smug Pommy cheat" by a local newspaper, stepped up to bowl but he quickly snared opener Chris Rogers for one in his second over. Broad also accounted for Shane Watson (22)

IN BRIEF Armstrong reaches settlement in one fraud case

WASHINGTON: Disgraced cyclist Lance Armstrong reached a settlement on Wednesday in one of the fraud cases spawned by his confession that his Tour De France victories were fuelled by doping. Mark Kincaid, an attorney for Nebraska-based Acceptance Insurance, confirmed the company had reached a settlement with Armstrong but gave no details. The company sued Armstrong and the Tailwind Sports Corporation in March claiming the cyclist committed fraud by concealing his use of performance enhancing drugs during the 1999, 2000 and 2001 Tours. The lawsuit sought repayment of USD 3 million "in undeserved an unearned pay Lance Armstrong obtained by fraud," the suit filed in Travis County Court in Austin, Texas, said. The payment cited was a USD 3 million bonus paid to Armstrong for his first three Tour victories.

No ‘gift win’ for Webber in Brazil swansong- Red Bull boss Horner

BROAD BASED CELEBRATIONS: Stuart Broad celebrates with his teammates after he got the wicket of Australia's Michael Clarke on the first day of the series-opening Ashes Test between England and Australia at the Gabba in Brisbane, Australia. just before lunch, and he then took the prized scalp of Australian skipper Clarke in the second over after the first break. Clarke looked uncomfortable against a short-pitched delivery and popped a gentle catch to Ian Bell at short leg for one, in what was a quick and tame end for Australia's premier batsman. Opener David Warner had smashed Broad's first ball of the day for four but his determined innings ended with a whimper as he became the tall quick's fourth victim just short of his half-cen-

tury. Warner looked disgusted at himself as he drove lazily at a short ball from Broad and spooned a catch in the covers to Kevin Pietersen, celebrating his 100th cap, for 49 off 82 balls. The innings continued to unravel for Australia and debutant George Bailey edged Anderson to Alastair Cook for three, leaving the home side 100 for five in the 36th over. Bailey only lasted 15 balls and he could have been out earlier if a snick off Anderson had carried to Cook at first slip. Steve Smith looked effective

with his unconventional shotmaking, but perished when he played away from his body and sparred Chris Tremlett to Cook at slip for 31. It was not the start Australia needed as they bid to avoid losing four successive Ashes series for the first time since 1890, and defend an unbeaten record at the Gabba stretching back 25 years. Brief Scores: Australia 273/8 90.0 overs [David Warner 49, Brad Haddin batting 78, Mitchell Johnson 64, Stuart Broad 5/65, James Anderson 2/61] vs England.

SAO PAULO: Retirement-bound Australian Mark Webber will be given no favours by Red Bull team-mate Sebastian Vettel in this weekend's Brazilian Grand Prix, the last of his Formula One career. That was the message for Webber and his fans from team chief Christian Horner ahead of what promises to be a spectacular season finale at the Interlagos circuit. With all the major titles settled, the leading teams and drivers will be expected to attack throughout without any team orders -- on one of the most dramatic circuits in the world. Most neutrals would love to see Webber secure his 10th victory in his 215th and final outing as an F1 driver, including many members of the Red Bull team, but according to Horner he is going to have to earn it the hard way.

South Africa win rain-hit match

JOHANNESBURG: A surprise bowling change brought a key wicket and was a crucial factor as South Africa beat Pakistan in a rainaffected first Twenty20 international at the Wanderers Stadium on Wednesday. Shortly before a storm broke over the stadium, South African captain Faf du Plessis called up JP Duminy to bowl his off-spinners, and Duminy caught Nasir Jamshed off his own bowling with his third delivery. Only ten more deliveries were possible before play was halted. Pakistan were 60 for two after 9.1 overs, four runs short of a revised par score after South Africa made 153 for seven in their 20 overs.
