P

remlata Purke, wife of Congress leader and deputy speaker of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, Vasant Purke, and Apurva Javadekar, son of BJP leader Prakash Javadekar, have surrendered the flats allotted to them in Mumbai under the CM’s discretionary Vasant Purke quota. This fact has emerged in an RTI query.

Premlata Purke was allotted a flat (566.5 sq.ft) in Sausalito Apartment, Oshiwara in Andheri West on February 5, 2002. She communicated to the Mumbai District Collector that she would surrender the flat

by April 27, 2012 and surrendered it by that date.

Similarly, Apurva Javadekar was allotted a flat (483.66 sq.ft) in Silver Crez Apartment, Powai, on September 27, 2008. He agreed to surrender the flat

by December 9, 2012 and surrendered it subsequently.

Similarly, one Kalpana Sathye has agreed to surrender her flat (details not available) by January 31, 2014.

She was served a notice on October 9, 2013 by the Mumbai Suburban District Collector.

This information was revealed by the Additional Collector and competent authority, Bandra, vide his letter dated January 10, 2014 in response to a query filed by RTI activist Anil Galgali.

The Additional Collector’s letter also states that another son of Prakash Javadekar, Ashutosh, was allotted a flat (around 560 sq.ft) at Kingstone in Powai on December 10, 2001. There is no mention on whether he surrendered the flat or has agreed to surrender it. However, Galgali has alleged that Ashutosh Javadekar has already sold the flat on June 4, 2003.

With no other means for getting their grievances redressed, these students are going on a strike at Azad Maidan on Thursday with the hope of the government hearing them out and doing the needful to help them.

“We want the government to regularise the admissions for us just the way it did for students from the earlier batches and allow us to complete our course”, said Sujo.

The strike is organised by the Indian Nurses Association and supported by several students welfare organisations.

Temporary professors in city colleges have not been paid for the last six months

hile individuals who have cleared their National Eligibility Test (NET) and State Eligibility Test (SET) have been already struggling to get their salaries, temporary professors in city colleges are now being ignored with regard to their payment. Professors have now waited for their salaries for over six months.

According to the rules of University Grants Commissions (UGC), an eligible professor who has cleared NET/SET has to be paid his salaries on the sixth pay commissions scale, whereas a temporary profes-

So, I am recommending to the government that let these students be allowed to appear for their exams and their results be declared. I also plan to suggest that let CET not be compulsory for the future batch of nursing students because if CET is made compulsory then very few nursing colleges will get sufficient students and several colleges will remain empty”.

Last year, the ADC had reported that even after clearing the NET/SET, professors with permanent jobs were not being paid as per the Sixth Pay Commission standards.

few days after the Juhu police claimed that they found no evidence - either circumstantial or accounts of eyewitnesses - to support actor Jiah Khan’s mother Rabia’s contention that her actress daughter was killed and did not commit suicide, Rabia said that she will move the Bombay High Court seeking reinvestigation of the case by a special investigating team, with assistance of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) of the United States.

This comes as the Juhu police filed a 415-page charge sheet in the Andheri Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court late last week, charging accused Sooraj Pancholi, a budding actor and ex-boyfriend of Jiah, only for abetting her suicide. Jiah was found hanging in her Juhu apartment on June 3 last year. In October, Jiah’s mother Rabia had filed a petition in the HC, contending that it was a case of murder, not suicide. The contention was based on an expert opinion after analysing Jiah’s pictures taken immediately after her death.

Patel has sent a letter to Municipal Commissioner Sitaram Kunte on January 16, informing him that there are around 70,000 street lights on the city streets that come under MSEB, Reliance and BEST, and asked him to give detailed information about the same in the coming meeting.

Patel said, “The height of the roads in the city vary from 30 to 120 feet because of which the street lights are not placed properly. The distance between each light should be 25 metres, which is not seen in the city as per the survey conducted. It has also been noticed that there are no

brackets on the top of the lights and 50 per cent of the lights are hidden by the branches of trees.”

He added, “The environment, CRZ and Urban Developmental (UD) departments should keep track of the street lights and trim the branches obstructing them at regular intervals. About 2 per cent of street lights do not function in the city. A detailed lux (unit of illumination) level survey of the city’s street lights should be conducted. It

is the primary responsibility of the BMC to provide proper lighting to the city, but they have been ignoring the issue for a long time.”

He added, “The BMC should carry out a detailed street illumination survey and make the report public.”

78,439 kids given polio drops MBMC launches intensive anti-polio drive in Mira-Bhayandar

round 78,439 children between the ages of 0 to 5 years were immunized at the hundreds of dedicated booths set up by the health department of the MiraBhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) in the twin-city on Sunday. While an elaborate five day long house-to-house polio immunization drive has been launched by 347 volunteers, special mobile teams have also been deputed at public places and transit points to administer polio doses to children who missed out

during booth day.

Apart from this, special focus was given to the migrant population in order to prevent importation of polio cases. The MBMC has also launched an elaborate publicity campaign to motivate parents and people in the community to get their children vaccinated.

“Our earnest endeavour is to reach every child under 5 years of age for vaccination, and after the regular booth process, an Intensive Pulse Polio Immunisation (IPPI) campaign has been launched,” said MBMC health-incharge, Dr. Anjali Patil.

24 year old auto driver was murdered by five people over redevelopment issues in Jogeshwari on Tuesday night. The deceased was refusing to sign for redevelopment work and the work had been stalled due to this. The accused therefore planned to murder him as the only option.

The Meghwadi police have arrested Zameer Sheikh Salman Sheikh, Raju Tanki, Mehmood Gulam, Hussain Shah and Irfan Sheikh alias Irfan, while Shafique Sheikh is absconding. Three of the accused surrendered to the police after the murder while the other accused were arrested on Wednesday.Khijar Pasha, an auto driver by profession resided at Radhabai Chawl in Jogeshwari east.

For the last several months there was rift between Pasha and the accused over the redevelopment issue. The accused were trying to force Pasha in signing the papers but he resisted.

minent lawyer and NCP’s national secretary Majid Memon will be the party’s second candidate besides party president Sharad Pawar to contest the biennial Rajya Sabha elections from the state.

On Monday, the party declared the name of Pawar and started the discussion for the second seat. Finally yesterday afternoon the party announced the name of Majid Memon. NCP spokesperson D.P. Tripathi told reporters about the party’s decision.

Of the 55 seats falling vacant in the Rajya Sabha, the

state has the biggest chunk of seven retiring members. They are Murli Deora and Hussain Dalwai (Congress), Y.P. Trivedi and Janardhan Waghmare (NCP), Bharatkumar Raut and Rajkumar Dhoot (Shiv Sena) and Prakash Javadekar (BJP).

Meanwhile, the Congress has made it clear that the party leadership will start the seat sharing discussions with NCP in the next few days for the Lok Sabha poll. Power tariff cut: Onus on State, MERC, says RInfra

eliance Infrastructure (RInfra) has pointed fingers at the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) and the State Government after Congress MPs Sanjay Nirupam and Priya Dutt staged a demonstration last week demanding cut in power tariff rates. The company has pointed out to them that the prerogative of reducing the power tariff rates rests with MERC and the state government. Nirupam is slated to stage a dharna at the Reliance Energy office at Kandivali on Thursday. Meanwhile, BJP MLA Gopal Shetty too has demanded a 20 per cent reduction in power tariff rates for Mumbaikars not covered by

the state cabinet decision of January 20.

In a statement issued here yesterday, Rinfra spokesperson pointed out that the company has forwarded the communication of the MPs to MERC and the state government. The company has drawn the attention of politicians demanding a roll back in tariff rates that the determination of power tariff rates is the prerogative of MERC. It has added that it is the state governments prerogative to grant subsidy. The spokesperson pointed out that the Supreme Court too has ruled that the determination of power tariff has to be done by the expert body, that is the MERC. The present power tariff rate structure has been determined by MERC in Au-

gust 2013.

The statement adds that Fixed Charges are part of tariff determined by MERC. The Fixed Charges are levied in order to maintain the physical infrastructure to ensure uninterrupted power supply to the consumers.

The Regulatory Asset Charge (RAC) is also part of the tariff rate. The tariff of low end consumers consuming up to 300 units per month are subsidised for Rs.830 crore by high end consumers as per tariff determined by MERC. Mumbai power consumers receive no subsidy from the state government.

Besides this Mumbai consumers pay more than Rs.2,500 crore each year to the state government as taxes on electricity.

Danger: Nothing to hang on to at train’s doorways I

t would be wrong to ask commuters not to travel on footboards because there are no footboards in local trains. They travel – standing on the edge of a doorway in a compartment. They clutch at the edge of the doorway.

Needless to say it is a precious way of travelling. As many as a dozen commuters can be seen travelling in this precarious manner. And when pressure mounts as passengers move behind those at the door, the latter get pushed out. It is astonishing that more passengers do not die following ‘footboard travel’.

Early this week, three passengers fell off the train, and one of them died. How many more deaths should take place before the Railways do something about this grave problem? Before a train takes off from a station or before its arrival, announcement is made regarding the danger involved in travelling on the roof top. Actually, the roof top travel is rare. The Railways should instead focus on ‘footboard’ travel. In fact, if possible, make it an offence.

The Railways are thinking of having air-conditioned first class coaches. Instead, they should do something about ‘footboard’ travel. The rush at all hours of the day makes passengers to travel dangerously. The least that can be done is to provide something which the passengers can hold on to. There must be something for the passengers to clutch at: Now there is nothing. The rush in local trains is becoming more and the Railways have got to make changes. Now the Railways appear to have scrapped all 9-coach trains and have mercifully changed to 12coach trains.

Lakhs of people use the trains which are convenient and fast. It is clear the Railways have to set apart more funds for the suburban railway service in Mumbai. At least the revenue that is earned by the Railways in Mumbai must all be utilised in the maintenance and development of local train service. This is not the case just now. The funds earned here go to a central pool. From this pool, the money goes to the national railway transport.

Is a change in this regard possible? Can the money collected from suburban services in Mumbai be utilised solely for improving them? If this is done, train commuters can travel more comfortably. And the rush will be much less – as travel facilities can be enhanced a great deal.

othing gives us political pundit types more pleasure than being able to say ‘I told you so’. And, so it gives me immense pleasure this week to say that I did tell you over and over again that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) was bad news because it stood for the kind of political and economic ideas that have been tried by most political parties already and that have always failed in the past.

When AAP formed the government in Delhi there were those among my political pundit peers who were filled with jubilation and they expressed this without hesitation on TV panel discussions and in their columns. Paeans were written to Arvind Kejriwal’s political skills, the humility of his demeanor and the commonness of his attire. Your humble columnist remained skeptical because in my view there was always something dishonest and dangerous about the movement that led to the formation of AAP.

Instead he was exalted as a hero and the chief minister himself took to the streets in a siege that was beyond all measure in terms of absurdity. The only good thing that has come out of this farce is that many people who voted for AAP in the Delhi election have now begun to regret what they did. Among them are emptyheaded socialites and high-minded intellectuals and they admit that their reason

Modi will benefit After the drubbing that voters gave Congress in Rajasthan, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh the coterie of ‘wise men’ that surround Rahul Gandhi came up with the supposedly ‘brilliant’ idea that AAP would be able to stop Narendra Modi. It was with this in mind that the Delhi unit of our oldest political party was ordered to lend the AAP government an ‘outside support’. Now that things have begun to unravel in the first few weeks of the new government taking office, there are whispers about how Congress is deliberately giving AAP a long enough rope to hang itself with. Sadly for Congress the rope is likely to be long enough to hang it as well and the man who could end up benefiting most from an AAP government in Delhi is Modi.

The more street protests that Delhi’s chief minister participates in and the more vigilantism that his ministers exhibit, the more the chances are that the urban, middle-class voter will see Modi as a shining alternative. It needs to be said in the clearest possible terms here that it is Modi’s personal appeal that is the factor and not the BJP’s image. In the past ten years, the BJP has been as bad an opposition party as Congress has been a government. It is because of disappointment with both these political parties that AAP rose to dizzying heights of electoral success. And, the time is not far off when it is likely to fall from those dizzying heights in the most ignominious manner. But, this does not mean that Indian voters are not looking for new leaders in a time of great disappointment and despair.

They most certainly are looking for newer and better political leaders but after the AAP experience they will be sure to look harder and more carefully.

APROPOS ‘End of AAP in Delhi?’

(ADC, Jan. 21), the intent of Kejriwal to rope in Delhi police as one of his election manifesto under the ambit of AAP indeed appears to be not well-conceived at all . Traditionally, Delhi police is being administered by the Centre, so all of a sudden, a new ruling party cannot take charge of any government department as Kejriwal has conceived. This is resulting in a huge rift , the ripples of which in the long run may affect Kejriwal and his party badly as is being witnessed by the Indian masses. He needs to handle it very carefully as the Congress otherwise would take full advantage of the situation to disrupt all the strategic political planning of AAP, which would then naturally be very upsetting for AAP and the aam aadmi at large.

And contrary to popular belief, it doesn’t have to be uncomfortable. A good quality corset will actually feel like a second skin.

An evening coat: While the city’s weather doesn’t permit us to wear a coat on a daily basis, a good evening coat will not go to waste in your wardrobe. It’s the ideal cover up during the party season and it will make you look polished and classy. Plus, a longer coat adds a dash of glamour to any look. Make sure the coat falls below your knees, fits beautifully on the shoulder and is of good quality.

Add heels and a belt and you can even wear it on an evening out.

These golden years are all about dressing well and classy.

‘UNISEX DRESSING IS COOL’ That’s what model, actor and martial arts champion Sandhya Shetty feels. Dev Goswami talks to her about karate and how looking a bit ‘macho’ can actually make a good fashion statement

Celebrities that you look up to for their fashion sense: I admire Rekha and Kirron Kher for their impeccable Indian style of dressing. I love Madonna for her bold sense of dressing, and Julia Roberts, who has a very uncanny style of dressing. In fact, she does a lot of unisex dressing too.

A male/unisex clothing item that you would never wear: Men’s underwear! I love lingerie and I’m very particular about innerwear, which is a very important line of clothing.

Your ideal man is: A man with great style and a sense of humour. He has to be super fit, of course.

The best compliment you’ve got: A compliment that I really love is that I have a very versatile personality; it makes me smile.

If you were a flavour, you would be?

Flavours already exist; I would create my flavour and let people want to be that. Versatile is my flavour.

Do you think that all women should learn a form of martial arts?

Yes. It’s a great way to keep yourself fit. Also, self-defense. I think every woman should learn it to be self-reliant.

Unisex designs are unique in a way, but they can’t be styled all the time. Also, the choice of clothes depends on personal choice and what flatters a person’s body. But, soft and loose cotton kurta-shirts look very feminine and stylish when teamed with a chunky belt and casual, colourful slip-ons.

While several fashion designers are coming out with unisex collection, the trend isn’t particularly common. Are you disappointed that mainstream fashion hasn’t picked it up yet?

What one wants to wear or design is a matter of choice. Unisex style has limitations and barriers to its own design sense and practicality, so it’s fine if it doesn’t hit the mainstream in a big way and stays the choice of a few.

What does the future hold for you as far as your modelling career is concerned?

I’m a model who believes in constant reinvention. I love acting too, so that’s another area I want to explore. My love for travel has resulted in me getting an opportunity to host a travel show — I would like to do more of that in the future as well.

I recently went for an interview for a job that sounds really good. It’s something that I always wanted and the company seems great too. My only problem is that at the interview I was told that I would be expected to work long hours that aren’t really fixed. I am not sure if that will go down with my family and I too am a little unsure of whether travelling late at night is a good idea. What should I do?

— Seema borana, bandra dear Seema, This is a decision that you will have to make. However, I will say this — if you really like this job and it is something that you’ve always wanted to do, then you will surely find a way. Your first course of action should be to ask the company’s HR to put you in touch with other women at the company who might be able to tell you how they manage the long, unfixed hours. Nearly all companies provide drops when you’re expected to work late. Perhaps they forgot to tell you about that at your interview. Another option is to look for a family member or a friend who can pick you up after work — it will be an inconvenience, but you have to see if the job will be worth it.

A colleague who eats lunch with me always gives me dirty looks when I bring any kind of meat. I am the only non-vegetarian in our lunch group but no one else has any problem with it, except her.

Last week, I even caught a couple of them rolling their eyes at her when she gave me a ‘lecture’ about why I should give up meat. I don’t want this to become a fight because it is a non-issue, but I don’t want to deal with her looks or comments either. What can I do?

— tejal pandya, matunga dear tejal, If she feels okay with commenting against you, then there’s no reason for you not to respond to her lectures. You don’t have to make it a fight though. The next time she says something about your lunch, simply retort with, “You have your eating habits, I have mine.” We know that it doesn’t sound like an effective response, but it is possible that the fact you haven’t said anything so far has emboldened her to move up from rude looks to comments. If that doesn’t work, you could try sitting as far away from her as possible and ignore her. You could also ask a couple of your other lunch mates to help you out and tell her that what she is doing is not cool.

But, by switching up a few things in your kitchen and buying a really big freezer (we’re not kidding, it’s the most important part of your kitchen!), you can make cooking a quick, simple and fun task. Take a look:

Use pre-mixes We know that ginger-garlic paste tastes best fresh, as do chili pastes, chutneys and pesto.

But, it’s always a good idea to buy a few packets/ bottles of pre-mixes. This way, when you’re too tired to cook, you don’t have to compromise with a bad meal.

make it into ice Store sorbets and cubes of wine so that when you need them in your cooking, you don’t have to look for an entire bottle. A trend we love is to chop up herbs with olive oil and freeze them in ice trays. This helps add a herby punch to your dishes, even when you’re all out of fresh herbs! peel it qUicker You get pre-peeled garlic and ginger, so we suggest you buy and store those. But, you can also make peeling fresh garlic and ginger easier. For ginger, skip the peeler and use a spoon to scrape off the skin. For garlic, warm them slightly (very slightly, don’t cook them!) and the skin will slip off on its own.

Freeze & store It’s a good idea to freeze and store meat

(chicken, fish, etc.) in bulk rather than having to run to buy some every time you need it. The easiest thing to do is separate the chicken, meat or fish according to how you cook it — small pieces for curries, legs for quick dinner, breast pieces for roulades, boneless cuts for pastas and salads and so on. Freeze them in separate bags and you’ll cut down your time in the store and kitchen.

BUtter it Up So, your family has a cake craving and you’re ready to pop a quick sponge in the oven. But, waiting for the butter to thaw can be a problem. Here’s a quick tip — grate the butter into your dry ingredients as it softens much quicker this way! So you can make pies, cookies and cakes without waiting hours for frozen butter to thaw.

I had done theatre in my home town Jabalpur (MP) where I participated in various inter-collegiate competitions and also an ideal parliamentary session for which I was supposed to get awarded by the President of India (did not happen, for some reason). That's when the acting bug bit me, the beauty pageant did not bring out the actor in me!

You did a film, Soham Shah’s ‘Sher’. Are you paired opposite Sanjay Dutt?

I am paired opposite a newcomer in the film ‘Sher’, It is an ensemble cast.

What are the TV soaps you have done?

I have ventured into the serial arena for the first time. Amrapali is the first role I will be playing on the small screen. I guess I was saving myself for the best.

What prompted you to do television?

How did you get the role of Amrapali?

My friends also suggested that it's high time I entered the television world since the boom in television is exponential, and also I think I wanted to come out of my comfort zone too and flex my acting muscles which had become rusty.

Have you seen 'Buddha' serial before?

I went for a meeting with Ridwana and I met her at the Buddha mansion. She spoke to me a little bit and then Dr. Modi walked in and when he started explaining how his life had changed because of Buddha, I instantly related to his passion and we exchanged thoughts about Amrapali and I guess while he was talking to me he figured I am fit to play the character! REVIEW OF THE PREVIOUS DAY: The Nifty rose marginally on Wednesday (January 22, 2014) a net 25.15 points (0.40%) and closed at the 6338 point level. The market opened down at the 6309 points level. It then declined further and registered the day’s low at the 6287 points level at 9.20 a.m. The index then rose into the green and turned into a range bound movement until 2.33 p.m. It then rose sharply and registered the day’s high at the 6349 points level at 3.00 p.m. The index then declined and turned into a range bound movement until closing at the day. The Nifty moved in a range of 63 points and closed above the psychologically important 6300 points level for the third consecutive session. Sentiment was bullish and amongst the 50 Nifty stocks 32 were gainers, while 18 stocks closed in the red. Substantial buying was seen in healthcare and metal stocks, while selling was seen in captial goods and FMCG stocks.

TECHNICAL ANALYSIS: Volume: Volume (Qty shares) increased 0.05%. This change is small and indicates a moderate participation by investors.

Market Breadth: Overall Market Breadth on the NSE was positive. Amongst all the traded stocks, 770 were gainers, 691 were losers and 64 remained unchanged.

RBI's Hawkish Stance Reflected In Recent Suggestions To Curb Inflation Say Experts

any analysts said the Reserve Bank committee's suggestion to keep consumer inflation at the Center of its monetary policy-making indicates the hawkish stance of the central bank going ahead.

The RBI committee, headed by Deputy Governor Urijit Patel, was set up last September to revise and strengthen the monetary policy framework. Yesterday, in its recommendation, the committee said inflation should be the 'nominal anchor' of the monetary policy framework, and it should be defined without any ambiguity. "These recommendations clearly carry hawkish implications. After all, the December headline CPI rate of 9.9 %

is well above the current 7.75% repo rate. In other words the real policy rate is negative at a time when inflation is above even the temporary 8 % target rate," global brokerage Credit Suisse said in a note.

The panel recommended using CPI inflation as the new nominal anchor, as it is the closest reflection of cost of living and inflation expectations. The panel suggested adopting a longer-term target of 4% for CPI inflation with a band of +/- 2 %.

Given the current elevated level of CPI inflation, the panel recommended a 12-month target of 8 % and 24-month target of 6 %, before the inflation target is formally adopted. However, some experts believe the panel recommendation for adopting monetary policy which

is centered on inflation will be a shift from traditional policy-making and will also bring RBI policy calibration closer to the international practices.

"We see the RBI's shift to inflation targeting as a step in the right direction. The time span over which it can be achieved will vary according to a number of factors, such as the rains or the global growth cycle or oil prices," Bank of America Merrill Lynch said in a report. Barclays, in a note, said for the RBI to become inflation targeting, as suggested by the panel, it needs active cooperation from the finance ministry.

"This will be crucial in removing administered prices and adhering to FRBM-defined fiscal deficit targets," Barclays said.

UMBAI/NEW DELHI: Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde on Tuesday called Arvind Kejriwal a “Veda Mukhyamantri” (mad chief minister) over his street protests and ally NCP too joined in the direct attack saying “CM in Delhi” stands for ‘Chosen Madness’.

Kejriwal continued to be at the receiving end for his two-day dharna which was called off last night with the BJP raising the pitch dubbing him and his ministerial and party colleagues as “unguided missiles” and saying they should behave responsibly as they are now bound by the Constitution, reports PTI. AAP’s outside supporter Congress said theatrics and drama, use of irresponsible and intimidating language and flagrant violation of law and Constitution have no place in our democratic polity “When I was in Kherwadi police station in Mumbai’s Bandra area, I did not get leave because there were Sena (led) riots. Similarly, yesterday (in Delhi), because of a ‘veda mukhyamantri’ (mad chief minister) sitting there (on dharna), I had to cancel the leave of policemen,” Shinde, who was targeted repeatedly by Kejriwal, said. He, however, did not name the Chief Minister.

Shinde’s remarks came while addressing a meeting at Hingoli in

Sushilkumar Shinde Marathwada region where he spoke about an instance in the 1970s, when as a policeman, he could not get leave after his marriage due to work pressure.

Kejriwal had called Shinde corrupt and inefficient and dared the Home Minister to evict him from the dharna venue near Rail Bhavan during his protest against the Delhi police. Upping the ante against AAP, Congress spokesperson Randip Sur-

jewala said the latter should look within and realize the inconvenience caused to common man due to their “theatrics and drama” of agitation.

Congress General Secretary Digvijay Singh taunted the Delhi Chief Minister asking why did he send AAP leader Yogendra Yadav to negotiate with Lieutenant-Governor Najeeb Jung to end the stir.

“Kejriwal said that they will not negotiate. It’s not a grocery shop.

EW DELHI: Police may ask Union minister Shashi Tharoor and others to join the ‘probe’ into the mysterious death of his wife Sunanda Pushkar, a day after it was directed by a magistrate to investigate suicide and homicide angles in the high-profile case.

Investigators are ‘examining’ the report by the Sub- Divisional Magistrate to chalk out future course of action in the case following the autopsy report mentioning ‘poisoning’ as the cause of the ‘sudden and unnatural” death of 52-yearold Sunanda, sources told PTI. They said police may issue notices under 160 of CrPC (which en-

tails witnesses to join probe) to Tharoor and 11 others including Sunanda’s brothers and son asking them to join investigations.

Asked if Tharoor will be questioned, the source said police was looking into the factors which caused Sunanda’s death and if required, the Union minister may be asked to clarify certain things.

Meanwhile, Shiv Menon, Sunanda’s son, ruled out that there was any foul play, saying both Tharoor and his mother were “very much in love” despite their “occasional differences” and that he did not believe the minister was capable of harming her physically.

EW DELHI: BJP is projected to make a near sweep in Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls with Narendra Modi remaining the top choice for Prime Ministership, according to an opinion poll.

In Maharashtra too, the poll conducted by CNN-IBN and CSDS projects BJP-Shiv Sena combine ahead of Congress-NCP coalition with 2533 seats as against 12-20 seats out of

48 seats, reports PTI. The survey shows BJP getting 2327 seats out of a total of 29 in Madhya Pradesh and 20-25 of the 26 Lok Sabha seats in Gujarat. Congress is projected to get 2-5 seats in Madhya Pradesh and 1-4 seats in Gujarat.

In terms of poll percentage, BJP is projected to get 50 per cent in Chhattisgarh. Among the PM candidates, Modi continues to be the top choice leaving Rahul Gandhi a distant sec-

ond. 46 per cent of those polled in Gujarat wanted Modi to be PM, while only 16 per cent support Gandhi.

40 per cent respondents in Maharashtra prefer Modi as PM, a jump of 19 per cent in a year, while 14 per cent prefer Gandhi as PM, almost the same as last year, the poll said.

Interestingly, even in Madhya Pradesh 46 per cent preferred Modi over their Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan for the post of PM.

NCP on Wednesday was non-committal on whether Sharad Pawar will work in a UPA government headed by Rahul Gandhi but indicated all options of the party supremo becoming prime minister are open depending on ‘circumstances’. “Till now the Congress has not declared its prime ministerial candidate. A leader heading the Congress campaign (does not mean PM candidate)... There is a difference between the two,” party spokesman D P Tripathi told reporters.

EC to meet recognised political parties on Feb 4 In the run up to Lok Sabha polls, the Election Commission has convened a meeting of all recognised political parties on February 4 for the conduct of free and fair elections. The all-party meeting, which is part of EC’s poll preparations, comes a day ahead of the Parliament Session.

ELBOURNE: Roger Federer fought back from a mid-match stumble against Andy Murray onWednesday to set up a classic Australian Open semi-final with Rafael Nadal, as women's champion Victoria Azarenka became the latest star to fall.

After Nadal battled through an unexpectedly tough quarter-final with Bulgaria's Grigor Dimitrov, Federer showed both his vintage best and his fallibility in beating Murray 6-3, 6-4, 6-7 (6/8), 6-3.

The Swiss great was electric in the first two sets but he tightened as he neared the finishing line, and was broken when serving for the win before passing up two match points in the third-set tiebreaker.

However, he extended Murray in a 19minute hold at the start of the fourth set, then got the crucial break for 5-3 and, after setting up a third match point, he grabbed the opportunity with an ace.

"I thought Andy did well, he kept the ball in play and put the pressure on me and unfortunately I couldn't get it done in the third set, with either the serve or the forehand missing.

So I am happy to get the win in four," Federer said.

"I am much higher than I was last year and that's very satisfying just because I have confidence in my movement."

Federer, in his 11th consecutive Australian Open semi-final, will face the man who has become his Grand Slam nemesis, winning their last five encounters at major tournaments.

But a day after Novak Djokovic's three-year Melbourne reign was halted by Stanislas Wawrinka, Nadal also flirted with disaster before getting out of jail against rising Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov.

The 13-time Grand Slam champion, troubled by a huge blister on his racquet hand, went a set down against the exciting young prospect and, facing set points in the third, he was tottering.

But Dimitrov, 22, went just long on the first set point and Nadal saved another before the Bulgarian gave him a one-set lead when, gifted an easy winner off a net cord, he ballooned his forehand out. "I was so lucky," admitted the Spaniard, who ran out a 3-6, 7-6 (7/3), 7-6 (9/7), 6-2 winner to set up a meeting with Federer in his 22nd Grand Slam semifinal.

Djokovic's defeat by Wawrinka, who will play Tomas Berdych in the other semi, ensures that one of them will be able to challenge either Nadal or Federer for their maiden Grand Slam title.

"I'm a bit shattered," said Dimitrov, after his title hopes slipped away. "It's tough losing that match, my first (Grand Slam) quarter-final. I came out expecting nothing less than to win."

Paes and Stepanek, seeded fifth in the event, were downed 2-6 6-7 (4) by the 13th-seeded French combination of Michael Llodra and Nicolas Mahut. The contest, which lasted a little less than and one and half hour, was quite lopsided with Llodra and Mahut imposing themselves with a powerful first serve.

India surrender top ODI ranking after back-to-back defeats

AMILTON: India were dethroned as the number one ODI team after they suffered an agonising 15-run defeat in a rain-truncated second cricket one-dayer against New Zealand, who have now taken a 2-0 lead in the five-match series here.

India, who desperately needed a win to retain their top spot, made a valiant effort to overhaul the revised target of 297 in 42 overs but failed to cross the finishing line scoring 277 for nine in 41.3 overs, giving Australia pole position in the ICC ODI rankings.

The Duckworth-Lewis par score in 41.3 overs was 293. Put into bat, the Kiwis rattled up 271 for seven riding on Kane Williamson's 76 and all-rounder Corey Anderson's rampaging 17ball-44 that included five huge sixes as the hosts amassed a whopping 101 runs in 8.4 overs after rain interruption.

India were left with a daunting task of chasing a revised target of 297 as per the D/L method and were again done in by a shaky start and lack of big partnerships which has been their bane of late.

Thereafter Dhoni reached his 50 in the 39th over, off 41 balls, looking to take India home single-handedly. His efforts came to nought though as he holed out in the deep in the 40th over. Earlier, Indian bowlers dished out yet another listless performance as New Zealand scored an imposing 271 for seven in 42 overs.

Williamson set the platform with a polished knock of 77 helping all-rounder Anderson to cut loose as he played a brilliant cameo smashing 44 off only 17 balls with five huge sixes. BPCL, Indian Oil make winning starts M

UMBAI: Oil majors, Bharat Petroelum Corporation Limited (BPCL) and Indian Oil, both won their opening group matches in the Rs 12 lakhs prize-money 10th All India Dr. D.Y. Patil T20 Cup played at the D.Y. Patil Stadium, Nerul, on Wednesday.

BPCL propelled by opener Bhavin Thakkar’s unbeaten knock of 54 from an even number of balls stormed to a convincing 7-wicket victory against Air India in a Group-C encounter. Chasing a target of 161 runs to win BPCL achieved their target without much of a problem. Thakkar along with captain Suryakumar Yadav (44 runs from 24 balls) ensured that their team crossed the finish line. They innings was earlier given a boost by Abdhishek Nayar who smashed a rapid 21 from just seven balls, which included three sixes and an equal number of boundaries.

The Air India innings was built on Sushant Marathe’s classy 81 from 50 balls. He scored six four and four sixes in his cameo innings. Tanmay Mishra chipped in 24 runs. On the adjacent University ground, Indian Oil defeated hosts D.Y. Patil ‘B’ by five wickets in a Group ‘D’ clash. The home side who were made to bat first scored 156 for nine wickets from their 20 overs. Abhishek Jhunjhunwala and Yogesh Pawar both scored half tons scoring 50 and 52 runs respectively. In another Group D encounter, Reliance 1 inflicted a six-wicket defeat on Canara Bank.

Put in to bat first, Canara Bank were bowled out for a paltry 110 in 18 overs. Openers Bharat Chipli (25) and K.B. Pawan (24) were the only ones to make decent contributions and put together a 51-run association. But after their dismissals, the other Canara batsmen lost their way. Medium pacers Amitoze Singh (4/25) and Pawan Suyal (3/33) were the main wicket-takers. In reply, Reliance started off shakily losing two wickets with only 19 runs on the board before skipper and former Indian star Parthiv Patel (15) and Rakesh Solanki (49) rebuild the innings with a 41runs partnership for the third wicket and ensured their team cruised to victory. Earlier in a Group ‘B’ match, captain Praful Waghela led from the front to power Tata Sports Club to a comfortable 7-wicket win against Western Railway. Opening the batting Waghela smashed 81 runs as Tatas easily surpassed their victory target of 129, scoring 132 for the loss of just three wickets in 15.4 overs.

Waghela’s innings came off 51 balls and contained three sixes and seven boundaries.
