P
remlata Purke, wife of Congress leader and deputy speaker of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, Vasant Purke, and Apurva Javadekar, son of BJP leader Prakash Javadekar, have surrendered the flats allotted to them in Mumbai under the CM’s discretionary Vasant Purke quota. This fact has emerged in an RTI query. Premlata Purke was allotted a flat (566.5 sq.ft) in Sausalito Apartment, Oshiwara in Andheri West on February 5, 2002. She communicated to the Mumbai District Collector that she would surrender the flat by April 27, 2012 and surrendered it by that date. Similarly, Apurva Javadekar was allotted a flat (483.66 sq.ft) in Silver Crez Apartment, Powai, on September 27, 2008. He agreed to surrender the flat by December 9, 2012 and surrendered it subsequently. Similarly, one Kalpana Sathye has agreed to surrender her flat (details not available) by January 31, 2014. She was served a notice on October 9, 2013 by the Mumbai Suburban District Collector. This information was revealed by the Additional Collector and competent authority, Bandra, vide his letter dated January 10, 2014 in response to a query filed by RTI activist Anil Galgali. The Additional Collector’s letter also states that another son of Prakash Javadekar, Ashutosh, was allotted a flat (around 560 sq.ft) at Kingstone in Powai on December 10, 2001. There is no mention on whether he surrendered the flat or has agreed to surrender it. However, Galgali has alleged that Ashutosh Javadekar has already sold the flat on June 4, 2003. When contacted, Prakash Javadekar was reluctant to speak, but claimed that both his sons had surrendered their flats much earlier. Purke was not available Continued on pg 8 «

College of Nursing and Research Centre, Nagpur. With no other means for getting their grievances redressed, these students are going on a strike at Azad Maidan on Thursday with the hope of the government hearing them out and doing the needful to help them. “We want the government to regularise the admissions for us just the way it did for students from the earlier batches and allow us to complete our course”, said Sujo. The strike is organised by the Indian Nurses Association and supported by several students welfare organisations.

hile individuals who have cleared their National Eligibility Test (NET) and State Eligibility Test (SET) have been already struggling to get their salaries, temporary professors in city colleges are now being ignored with regard to their payment. Professors have now waited for their salaries for over six months. According to the rules of University Grants Commissions (UGC), an eligible professor who has cleared NET/SET has to be paid his salaries on the sixth pay commissions scale, whereas a temporary profes-
Speaking on this issue, Dr. Pravin Shingare, Director, DMER said, “Yes I know about this issue. The colleges have done a great mistake by giving admissions to students who had not appeared for CET as CET is mandatory. So it is not the mistake of the students but of the colleges. So, I am recommending to the government that let these students be allowed to appear for their exams and their results be declared. I also plan to suggest that let CET not be compulsory for the future batch of nursing students because if CET is made compulsory then very few nursing colleges will get sufficient students and several colleges will remain empty”. “I have not been informed about the strike as yet. If the students come to me, I will have a discussion with them”, added Dr. Shingare. sor can be paid as per the salary scales finalised by the colleges themselves. A professor, who has been working temporarily in a Malad-based college, said, “ The college has been ignoring our payments. When we ask for our salaries, we are either asked to wait or quit the job and find another college. They also claim that as we are temporary they can remove us at any time”. Last year, the ADC had reported that even after clearing the NET/SET, professors with permanent jobs were not being paid as per the Sixth Pay Commission standards. Pradeep Sawant, Senate member, MU said, “Teachers who have not got their salaries should file a complaint with the varsity teachers’/staff grievance cell. As soon as the complaint is filed, the varsity will carry out its inspection and if the management of a college is found guilty, action will be taken. The complainant should not be worried about his identity being disclosed as the cell will keep his or her details confidential”.

FBI in Jiah Khan case?

A
few days after the Juhu police claimed that they found no evidence - either circumstantial or accounts of eyewitnesses - to support actor Jiah Khan’s mother Rabia’s contention that her actress daughter was killed and did not commit suicide, Rabia said that she will move the Bombay High Court seeking reinvestigation of the case by a special investigating team, with assistance of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) of the United States. This comes as the Juhu police filed a 415-page charge sheet in the Andheri Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court late last week, charging accused Sooraj Pancholi, a budding actor and ex-boyfriend of Jiah, only for abetting her suicide. Jiah was found hanging in her Juhu apartment on June 3 last year. In October, Jiah’s mother Rabia had filed a petition in the HC, contending that it was a case of murder, not suicide. The contention was based on an expert opinion after analysing Jiah’s pictures taken immediately after her death. Rabia told media persons on Wednesday that she has approached US authorities, requesting assistance of the FBI, as her daughter was an American citizen. “I would just say that we have no con-
unilateral investigations outside the United States, it can review your daughter’s case in an advisory role if requested by Indian law enforcement,” the letter said. A subsequent communication from Rosemary Macray, Chief of the American Citizens Services Unit said that the Legal Attache at the US embassy had sent a request letter to the CBI whose response to the offer of partnering with the US agency in the probe was awaited. BJP leader demands detailed info on city’s street lights By Khushboo Panjabi
A
fter a week long hunger strike by Andheri BJP corporator Amit Satam on the issue of lighting being almost 30 per cent below the required level, BJP party leader Dilip Patel yesterday, raised the issue in the BMC standing committee meeting, claiming that he needs detailed information about how well-illuminated Mumbai’s streets are. Patel has sent a letter to Municipal Commissioner Sitaram Kunte on January 16, informing him that there are around 70,000 street lights on the city streets that come under MSEB, Reliance and BEST, and asked him to give detailed information about the same in the coming meeting. Patel said, “The height of the roads in the city vary from 30 to 120 feet because of which the street lights are not placed properly. The distance between each light should be 25 metres, which is not seen in the city as per the survey conducted. It has also been noticed that there are no
brackets on the top of the lights and 50 per cent of the lights are hidden by the branches of trees.” He added, “The environment, CRZ and Urban Developmental (UD) departments should keep track of the street lights and trim the branches obstructing them at regular intervals. About 2 per cent of street lights do not function in the city. A detailed lux (unit of illumination) level survey of the city’s street lights should be conducted. It
is the primary responsibility of the BMC to provide proper lighting to the city, but they have been ignoring the issue for a long time.” He added, “The BMC should carry out a detailed street illumination survey and make the report public.” Additional Municipal Commissioner S.V.R. Srinivas said, “We will study the issue in detail and come up with a solution in the next meeting.” khushboo.panjabi@afternoondc.in

78,439 kids given polio drops MBMC launches intensive anti-polio drive in Mira-Bhayandar By Suresh Golani
A
round 78,439 children between the ages of 0 to 5 years were immunized at the hundreds of dedicated booths set up by the health department of the MiraBhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) in the twin-city on Sunday. While an elaborate five day long house-to-house polio immunization drive has been launched by 347 volunteers, special mobile teams have also been deputed at public places and transit points to administer polio doses to children who missed out
during booth day. Apart from this, special focus was given to the migrant population in order to prevent importation of polio cases. The MBMC has also launched an elaborate publicity campaign to motivate parents and people in the community to get their children vaccinated. “Our earnest endeavour is to reach every child under 5 years of age for vaccination, and after the regular booth process, an Intensive Pulse Polio Immunisation (IPPI) campaign has been launched,” said MBMC health-incharge, Dr. Anjali Patil.

By Suresh Golani ess than 24 hours after a notorious bike thief escaped from the custody of the Kashimira police, a police team arrested him from his native village, Saphale, near Palghar late on Tuesday night. According to the police, Vishal Bharat Vaity (21), was arrested by the Mumbai police in connection with 15 bike theft cases. The Kashimira police sought Vaity’s custody, to probe his involvement in similar crimes that had been reported in their jurisdiction. He was handed over through transit custody on Monday. At about 7:50 am on Tuesday, he requested on-duty police personnel- Assistant Sub-Inspector, Bajirao Sawant, to allow him use the toilet, however while returning, Vaity assaulted the escorting cop and escaped. A police team led by API Shahji Pawar launched a manhunt for the accused who was arrested while he was trying to sneak into his village home in Saphale at about 11 pm on Tuesday. The daring flight-tofreedom by an accused-incustody has yet again exposed the chinks in the security system of the Thane (rural) police. It may be recalled that in a similar flight to freedom case, a 22-year-old woman, accused in a theft case who was arrested from Bangalore, had escaped from the custody of the Kashimira Police in February, 2011. Meanwhile, Vaity has been now been slapped with additional charges including section 324, 353 and 332 of the IPC.

minent lawyer and NCP’s national secretary Majid Memon will be the party’s second candidate besides party president Sharad Pawar to contest the biennial Rajya Sabha elections from the state. On Monday, the party declared the name of Pawar and started the discussion for the second seat. Finally yesterday afternoon the party announced the name of Majid Memon. NCP spokesperson D.P. Tripathi told reporters about the party’s decision. Of the 55 seats falling vacant in the Rajya Sabha, the
state has the biggest chunk of seven retiring members. They are Murli Deora and Hussain Dalwai (Congress), Y.P. Trivedi and Janardhan Waghmare (NCP), Bharatkumar Raut and Rajkumar Dhoot (Shiv Sena) and Prakash Javadekar (BJP). Meanwhile, the Congress has made it clear that the party leadership will start the seat sharing discussions with NCP in the next few days for the Lok Sabha poll. The state Congress has also kept its options open for negotiations with the NCP. State Congress president Manikrao Thakre has stated that swapping of seats is likely. Acording to sources, Congress is expected Majid Memon

Power tariff cut: Onus on State, MERC, says RInfra By Prashant Hamine
R
eliance Infrastructure (RInfra) has pointed fingers at the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) and the State Government after Congress MPs Sanjay Nirupam and Priya Dutt staged a demonstration last week demanding cut in power tariff rates. The company has pointed out to them that the prerogative of reducing the power tariff rates rests with MERC and the state government. Nirupam is slated to stage a dharna at the Reliance Energy office at Kandivali on Thursday. Meanwhile, BJP MLA Gopal Shetty too has demanded a 20 per cent reduction in power tariff rates for Mumbaikars not covered by
the state cabinet decision of January 20. In a statement issued here yesterday, Rinfra spokesperson pointed out that the company has forwarded the communication of the MPs to MERC and the state government. The company has drawn the attention of politicians demanding a roll back in tariff rates that the determination of power tariff rates is the prerogative of MERC. It has added that it is the state governments prerogative to grant subsidy. The spokesperson pointed out that the Supreme Court too has ruled that the determination of power tariff has to be done by the expert body, that is the MERC. The present power tariff rate structure has been determined by MERC in Au-
gust 2013. The statement adds that Fixed Charges are part of tariff determined by MERC. The Fixed Charges are levied in order to maintain the physical infrastructure to ensure uninterrupted power supply to the consumers. The Regulatory Asset Charge (RAC) is also part of the tariff rate. The tariff of low end consumers consuming up to 300 units per month are subsidised for Rs.830 crore by high end consumers as per tariff determined by MERC. Mumbai power consumers receive no subsidy from the state government. Besides this Mumbai consumers pay more than Rs.2,500 crore each year to the state government as taxes on electricity.
to stake claim over Hingoli, Amravati, Kolhapur and Osmanabad parliamentary seats held by NCP while the latter is likely to demand seats like Raigad and Jalna (held by Congress). The tussle between the two parties on seat sharing is on with reports that Thakre is in favour of slashing NCP quota from 22 seats to 19. Congress had expressed it would contest 29 Lok Sabha seats. Ponder awhile... “The world is a dangerous place to live; not because of the people who are evil, but because of the people who don’t do anything about it.” — Albert Einstein
Danger: Nothing to hang on to at train’s doorways I
t would be wrong to ask commuters not to travel on footboards because there are no footboards in local trains. They travel – standing on the edge of a doorway in a compartment. They clutch at the edge of the doorway. Needless to say it is a precious way of travelling. As many as a dozen commuters can be seen travelling in this precarious manner. And when pressure mounts as passengers move behind those at the door, the latter get pushed out. It is astonishing that more passengers do not die following ‘footboard travel’. Early this week, three passengers fell off the train, and one of them died. How many more deaths should take place before the Railways do something about this grave problem? Before a train takes off from a station or before its arrival, announcement is made regarding the danger involved in travelling on the roof top. Actually, the roof top travel is rare. The Railways should instead focus on ‘footboard’ travel. In fact, if possible, make it an offence. The Railways are thinking of having air-conditioned first class coaches. Instead, they should do something about ‘footboard’ travel. The rush at all hours of the day makes passengers to travel dangerously. The least that can be done is to provide something which the passengers can hold on to. There must be something for the passengers to clutch at: Now there is nothing. The rush in local trains is becoming more and the Railways have got to make changes. Now the Railways appear to have scrapped all 9-coach trains and have mercifully changed to 12coach trains. Lakhs of people use the trains which are convenient and fast. It is clear the Railways have to set apart more funds for the suburban railway service in Mumbai. At least the revenue that is earned by the Railways in Mumbai must all be utilised in the maintenance and development of local train service. This is not the case just now. The funds earned here go to a central pool. From this pool, the money goes to the national railway transport. Is a change in this regard possible? Can the money collected from suburban services in Mumbai be utilised solely for improving them? If this is done, train commuters can travel more comfortably. And the rush will be much less – as travel facilities can be enhanced a great deal.

othing gives us political pundit types more pleasure than being able to say ‘I told you so’. And, so it gives me immense pleasure this week to say that I did tell you over and over again that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) was bad news because it stood for the kind of political and economic ideas that have been tried by most political parties already and that have always failed in the past. When AAP formed the government in Delhi there were those among my political pundit peers who were filled with jubilation and they expressed this without hesitation on TV panel discussions and in their columns. Paeans were written to Arvind Kejriwal’s political skills, the humility of his demeanor and the commonness of his attire. Your humble columnist remained skeptical because in my view there was always something dishonest and dangerous about the movement that led to the formation of AAP.

for voting for AAP was because they were ‘sick to death’ of the mainstream political parties. Now there are many among them who are beginning to be nostalgic for Sheila Dikshit and for the general sense of order that prevailed in the Indian capital in her time. This is not to say that things were perfect then. Every citizen of this city who has been unlucky enough to have dealings with the police knows that there are serious flaws in their manner of functioning. On a personal level may I say that when my house was robbed four years ago I was told by everyone that unless I knew someone ‘very high up’ who could
Lack of governance When Anna Hazare went on his first hunger strike at Jantar Mantar, famous TV anchors fell over themselves in their efforts to depict him as India’s new Gandhi. I warned that it was wrong for unelected people to demand the right to make laws. Unfortunately for us the Congress Party was so incapable of managing the movement against corruption that they made mistake after mistake and finally conceded to Anna and gang the right to make a law that will do very little to curb corruption and a great deal to spread the kind of senseless vigilantism that we have seen in Delhi since Kejriwal and his band of vigilante ministers took office. His law minister should have been arrested the day that he tried to force policemen to ‘raid’ a house without a warrant. At the very least he should have been reprimanded by the Chief Minister of Delhi for trying to take the law into his own hands. Instead he was exalted as a hero and the chief minister himself took to the streets in a siege that was beyond all measure in terms of absurdity. The only good thing that has come out of this farce is that many people who voted for AAP in the Delhi election have now begun to regret what they did. Among them are emptyheaded socialites and high-minded intellectuals and they admit that their reason
ON THE SPOT Tavleen Singh help find my stolen property I should just forget about the jewellery and cash that I had lost. At first the police made a great show of investigating the crime and informed me that it had to be an ‘inside job’ but then they did nothing. Much worse things happen all the time and nearly always the police fails to act but the answer does not lie in ministers haranguing them in the full glare of television cameras. The answer lies in coming up with specific reforms and this can only happen if serious attention is paid to governance. This is the most important thing that the AAP government has failed so far to pay attention to because of its mistaken belief that the root of all India’s problems is corruption. There is no doubt that corruption is a factor but it is only a factor not the root. Bad governance is at the root of most of India’s problems and this would have become evident to Delhi’s chief minister if he had bothered to spend some time on governance. Instead, he has joined

MONG birds are to be found those who recognize their mate and who live together, harmoniously building the nest for their young, each in turn sitting on the eggs, and bearing their part in the upbringing of their little ones. Many times they mourn and lament over the death of their mate. The Nafs of the insects is still less, they walk over each other without doing any harm, and live together in millions, as one family, without distinction of friend or foe. This proves how the power of Nafs grows at each step in nature’s evolution, and culminates in man, creating disharmony all through his life, unless it is subdued, producing thereby a calm and peace within the self, and a sense of harmony with others. Every human being has an attribute peculiar to his Nafs. One is tiger-like, another resembles a dog, while a third may be like a cat and a fourth like a fox. In this way
his vigilante ministers in giving us a roll call of gimmicks that have now so frightened the citizens of Delhi that there are many former supporters of AAP who are beginning to move quietly away. Kejriwal likes to announce, almost on a daily basis, that he could not care less if his government fell because he is certain that whenever elections are held his party will come back to power with an even larger number of seats. He might have a few nasty surprises in store for him and so will the Congress Party.
Modi will benefit After the drubbing that voters gave Congress in Rajasthan, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh the coterie of ‘wise men’ that surround Rahul Gandhi came up with the supposedly ‘brilliant’ idea that AAP would be able to stop Narendra Modi. It was with this in mind that the Delhi unit of our oldest political party was ordered to lend the AAP government an ‘outside support’. Now that things have begun to unravel in the first few weeks of the new government taking office, there are whispers about how Congress is deliberately giving AAP a long enough rope to hang itself with. Sadly for Congress the rope is likely to be long enough to hang it as well and the man who could end up benefiting most from an AAP government in Delhi is Modi. The more street protests that Delhi’s chief minister participates in and the more vigilantism that his ministers exhibit, the more the chances are that the urban, middle-class voter will see Modi as a shining alternative. It needs to be said in the clearest possible terms here that it is Modi’s personal appeal that is the factor and not the BJP’s image. In the past ten years, the BJP has been as bad an opposition party as Congress has been a government. It is because of disappointment with both these political parties that AAP rose to dizzying heights of electoral success. And, the time is not far off when it is likely to fall from those dizzying heights in the most ignominious manner. But, this does not mean that Indian voters are not looking for new leaders in a time of great disappointment and despair. They most certainly are looking for newer and better political leaders but after the AAP experience they will be sure to look harder and more carefully.

APROPOS ‘End of AAP in Delhi?’ (ADC, Jan. 21), the intent of Kejriwal to rope in Delhi police as one of his election manifesto under the ambit of AAP indeed appears to be not well-conceived at all . Traditionally, Delhi police is being administered by the Centre, so all of a sudden, a new ruling party cannot take charge of any government department as Kejriwal has conceived. This is resulting in a huge rift , the ripples of which in the long run may affect Kejriwal and his party badly as is being witnessed by the Indian masses. He needs to handle it very carefully as the Congress otherwise would take full advantage of the situation to disrupt all the strategic political planning of AAP, which would then naturally be very upsetting for AAP and the aam aadmi at large. — Bikram Banerjea, Mumbai
KEJRIWAL deserves a big pat for his performance in Delhi state elections and his subsequent rise to the position of the CM of the state. He has annihilated the Congress and set a wild cat amongst the jackals in other parties. He has changed the political scenario and mindset of the Indian voters. So far Kejriwal has moved in the right direction with the intentions of providing basic necessities to the poor and the downtrodden. However, that alone is not sufficient. He must also ensure a long-

THIS refers to your edit-piece ‘An AAP victory’ (ADC, Jan. 22). By yielding to the tantrums of an unruly activist-turned-chief minister, even if it is only obliquely, the government has effectively killed democracy in the capital and abetted mobocracy and anarchy. But, as you say, “How can the Congress go against the AAP in Delhi and lose a chance of naional support from the party?”, asking the cops who have been accused by an arrogant minister of disobedience to go on leave until the probe on their conduct is completed in fact amounts to a punishment which they certainly do not deserve. FM’s discovery THE FM lately is reported to have exhorted that the ‘achievements’ of the Congress were not conveyed to the people by the top leadership very regularly through media and inter-actions and cited the example of Barack Obama who makes it a point to come LETTER OF on the TV channels THE DAY around two to three times a week and address the people on various issues and the action taken by his government. Lack of such regular/ intermittent address by the top leadership, according to
FM, is one of the main reasons for the setback of Congress and the recent debacle as the people did not get to know the achievements of the government to appreciate its good work. The FM’s school of thought is unimaginative and not convincing as the large section of the discerning public are keeping themselves well informed through the TV News Channels, Newspapers and Magazines and hence the setback for the Congress. As candles add on to our cakes, our lives undergo a change and so does the way we dress. However, every age group has its own set of fashion must-haves. The Woman’s World team brings you the top fashion staples that you must stock on depending on your age
>> With fashion trends becoming obsolete as quickly as they come in vogue, confusion is evident. However, there are a few wardrobe essentials, pertaining to your age, that will never go out of style. Read on to know what your fashion staples are
twenty SomethingS In your twenties, you’re going to have to move away from your teeny-bopper pops of colour, childish prints and fluffy looks, but you don’t have to move all the way up to sophisticated outfits just yet. These few things will keep your look fun, stylish and age appropriate.
LBD: This goes without saying, but we’re going to say it anyway. In your teens, it’s alright to get away without this staple in your closet but once you hit your 20s, there’s no way the fashion gods will forgive you for forgetting about this essential dress.

Skinny and jeans: The older you get, the less you’ll be able to pull off this look. So, while you’re in your twenties, squeeze into a pair of these, top it off with some gorgeous heels and a fashionable top and you’ll be surprised at how different you look. And the best part about being in your twenties? You can pull off coloured jeans whether they’re in style or not!

Sunglasses: We’re sure you wore your fair share of kiddie sunglasses as a child, but now is the time to invest in a really good pair. Skip shopping on the streets and get one designer pair that you can wear everywhere and look a little more grown up. Continued on pg 14 «

A white tee: This has to be in your closet and if it isn’t already — shame on you! Whether it’s casual, formal, scoop necked, v-necked, sleeveless or full-sleeved, you need a basic white t-shirt that you can pair with skirts, jeans, trousers and even wear over a super strappy dress for a funky, youthful look.
Pencil skirts:
>> Black dress from Michelle Salins, Price on request
Mini-skirts and flared skirts were great for college, but as you advance through your twenties, you’re going to want to look a little more grown up. A pencil skirt is the perfect gobetween for a sophisticated but, not boring look. Pick a colour or a pretty print if you like, but make sure it fits you like a glove.
>> Basic white t-shirt from Kazo, `1,599
Coloured flats: We’re all about colour on this list, aren’t we? You should be too at this age! You can’t wear heels every day of your life, especially with our roads and transport system the way that they are. That’s why investing in a pair of >> Vanilla Moon pretty ballet shoes, embellished slippers coloured slippers, or patent flats is an absolute must! `3,750
the big 3.0! Now that you have managed to sneak past your 20s and have hopefully gotten over any ‘phases’ you might have had, now is the time to build up a solid wardrobe. Here are the staples you absolutely must have.
A black blazer: This item is so versatile; it can go from power-dressing at work, to accompanying your favourite bling dress on a chilly evening in a matter of seconds. Choose one that fits you well so that it follows the cut of your body, hangs right and gives you a chic, streamlined look and we promise it will serve you well.
fAb At forty By now you’ve probably got some idea about what kind of clothes you like. But more importantly, you probably know what kind of clothes you don’t like. But, there are some unlikely staples that are a must for your wardrobe. Take a look:
A nice handbag: Forget all those 20 cheap handbags you have and invest in a good quality, expensive handbag from a well-known store. First, you’ve earned it. Second, make sure it’s in a classic shape and colour so that it lasts you for years. A good handbag can class up even the simplest of outfits. >> Furla is a good choice if you are in your 40s
A diamond: It doesn’t have to be big or flashy — in fact, very large diamonds can actually make you seem older. A lovely pair of diamond earrings or a delicate chain will add enough sparkle to your look on days you need a little extra. Leave the imitation and costume jewellery to the 20-somethings. You’re past that, lady! >> Earrings from Tanishq for `10,000
A good corset: When you were younger you could probably get away with wearing none at all under a slinky long dress. But, as we age, gravity becomes even more obvious. We all need a little tucking and sucking in to make us look and feel a little better. A good corset, we recommend a nice body suit, will make your figure more flattering and can actually make you carry yourself better. And contrary to popular belief, it doesn’t have to be uncomfortable. A good quality corset will actually feel like a second skin.
An evening coat: While the city’s weather doesn’t permit us to wear a coat on a daily basis, a good evening coat will not go to waste in your wardrobe. It’s the ideal cover up during the party season and it will make you look polished and classy. Plus, a longer coat adds a dash of glamour to any look. Make sure the coat falls below your knees, fits beautifully on the shoulder and is of good quality. Add heels and a belt and you can even wear it on an evening out.
golden girl
Knee length dresses:
These golden years are all about dressing well and classy. Anything that is tacky, too-young-fora-50-year-old, or ohmom-what-are-youwearing kinds shouldn’t make an appearance in your wardrobe. Here are some key items that should undoubtedly be a part of your wardrobe.
Dresses of the right length can do wonders for a classy yet casual look in your 50s. Opt for a dress that is knee length, of a light colour and has threeforth sleeves that will perfectly hide jiggling upper arms.
>> Knee-length dress from OVS, Price on request
A leather jacket: We understand that you probably never had the money to invest in this in your 20s, but there’s no time better than now to buy one. Pair it with a plain shirt or t-shirt, jeans or leggings and boots for a rock-chic look or break the feminity of a floral dress by pairing it with a leather jacket. More than anything else, if you don’t buy a leather jacket in your 30s , you probably never will. Take the plunge and buy this now.
A shift dress: Nothing speaks comfort like a shift dress, either printed or plain. Invest in a mix of both and on days when you couldn’t be bothered to wear formal trousers to work, these shift dresses will come to the rescue. They are work appropriate and also great for semiformal occasions such as meeting the in-laws to be or a sit-down dinner when accessorised properly. nude pumps: You’re in your thirties — don’t say goodbye to high heels yet because you’ll regret that when you’re older. A nude pair will go with absolutely anything and make you look chic. Also, pick a moderate heel so that you get the most use out of it. If you are comfortable wearing sky high heels, great! Just make sure that whatever you do pick, you can walk in!
A lounging robe: You need to give your body and skin a little extra TLC at this age. That means when you’re out of the shower, you’re going to have to spend time moisturising and applying lotions from head to toe. Sounds tedious? Try making it a luxurious event. How? Buy a lovely silk or jersey robe. It’s also a good cover up on days when you can’t be bothered to dress up to answer the door.
>> Marc Cain leather jacket, Price on request
>> Blazer from www.stalkbuy love.com, `1,299
>> Red tote from Charles and Keith, `7,999 >> A chic overcoat from Marks & Spencer for `8,999
Chic reading glasses: This is a fashion statement that is grossly underrated. Invest in a sophisticated looking pair of reading glasses that will add a touch of wisdom to your overall look. A thin golden cord that can be attached to your spectacles, which will help your glasses to hang around your neck when not in use, is another fashion statement that we love!
A bra with enough support: As you get older, your breasts need a different kind of support than they did when you were in your twenties. Invest in a nice one that fits your chest at this stage in your life. Sagging breasts can be an eye sore in any apparel that you wear. Ensure that you don’t take a wellfitted bra lightly.
>> This shift dress is from Promod `2,890
A tote: You’ll have your fair share of clutches and bags as an adult, but in your thirties, it’s a great idea to rock a fashionable tote. Keep one as your go-to with everything already dumped in so you can sling it over your shoulders and rush out the door whenever you need to.
Mid-rise, straightleg jeans: Don’t even think about the pair of skinny jeans that your daughter might be donning and instead get a dark denim, midrise, straight-leg pair of jeans in dark blue colour. Ensure that the colour of the jeans is consistent throughout. Pair it with a nicely fitting kurta or tunic and you’ll look elegantly modern. >> Denim Story J Brand Aiden Ringer jeans, `15,300

‘UNISEX DRESSING IS COOL’ That’s what model, actor and martial arts champion Sandhya Shetty feels. Dev Goswami talks to her about karate and how looking a bit ‘macho’ can actually make a good fashion statement

Unisex designs are unique in a way, but they can’t be styled all the time. Also, the choice of clothes depends on personal choice and what flatters a person’s body. But, soft and loose cotton kurta-shirts look very feminine and stylish when teamed with a chunky belt and casual, colourful slip-ons. While several fashion designers are coming out with unisex collection, the trend isn’t particularly common. Are you disappointed that mainstream fashion hasn’t picked it up yet? What one wants to wear or design is a matter of choice. Unisex style has limitations and barriers to its own design sense and practicality, so it’s fine if it doesn’t hit the mainstream in a big way and stays the choice of a few. What does the future hold for you as far as your modelling career is concerned? I’m a model who believes in constant reinvention. I love acting too, so that’s another area I want to explore. My love for travel has resulted in me getting an opportunity to host a travel show — I would like to do more of that in the future as well.

dove eSSential nouriShment body lotion Thick in consistency, this moisturising lotion from Dove delivers what it promises — deep nourishment for long lasting softness, with DeepCare Complex, for normal-dry skin. The deep nourishment is perfect if you have dry skin. The fragrance (which reminds us of Dove’s bathing bar) of this lotion is light and lasts for about three hours. Since it has a thick consistency, a little amount suffices, making it last for quite some time. However, I have two problems with this lotion. One, it leaves behind a somewhat sticky texture on the skin and two, when you’ve used half of the contents of the bottle, squeezing out the lotion becomes a task. Apart from that, it’s a great buy. PriCe `180 for 250ml Star rating **** Where Retail cosmetic stores across the city oriFlame volume build maSCara I am not a fan of mascaras, but something about the packaging of this one had me hankering to try it out. Oriflame claims that it is a buildable mascara that gives your lashes great volume and length and I couldn’t agree more. It comes with a regular tapered wand and the mascara’s consistency is neither too gloopy nor too runny, which ensures that there is no streaking or smudging. Just one coat of the product gives your lashes a great lift and adds tons of volume. If you are looking for dramatic lashes, build up coats to get a really dramatic eye and make them pop! PriCe `449 for 8ml Star rating **** Where Through an Oriflame representative lakmé abSolute FaCe StyliSt bluSh duo This blush from Lakmé is quite pinky-pink. And forget about using the small straight brush that comes along with the pack. It just leaves pink jagged streaks across your face. The brush is especially bad for blending the two colours together — it just does not happen. So, we brought up a regular blush brush and tried out the product again with much better results. While the shade can’t be used for contouring, it gives a nice bit of colour to the apples of your cheeks. What we really liked was that it didn’t have glitter! This makes it a great blush to use for work or during the day. The pigment is strong so use gentle strokes. PriCe `750 Star rating *** Where Retail cosmetic stores across the city

nimrat kaur
Nope, we didn’t recognise her either. This outfit is a far cry from Sarah-Jane’s usually stylish looks. Perhaps she was having an off day. No makeup and an underwhelming outfit is a first from this lady. Frankly, we’re surprised she even had this kurta in her cupboard!
We love, love, love her outfit! It’s simple, sophisticated and super stylish. The wide leg pants are very flattering on Nimrat and we love how she breaks up the monotony of black with a little well-placed bling. Her bag adds a refreshing pop of colour to her classic look.

Stores in Mumbai need to stock other shapes of pants besides skinny. How much better would this outfit have looked if Huma was actually wearing pants that flattered her figure? We love the colour of the pair and the coat she’s thrown on is lovely too. But, those shoes… ugh.
We all love dressing cosy to catch a movie and this outfit looks perfect for curling up in the cinema chair with popcorn. But, those fussy boots might need to be kicked off first. Also, with this weather is it really wise for Sandhya to skip the moisturiser? Add a little lip balm too, love. .
Sometimes ‘LOL’ just sums things up perfectly, don’t you think? What’s going on here Piggy Chops? The pants are okay, but with that lampshade-sleeve-crop-top? And really, blingey earrings and geeky glasses? Your stylist is playing a mean trick on you.

When work meets home... What happens? Unless you’ve been doing it for a long time, the answer will probably be: a mess. Working from home means your personal and professional lives come together. Dev Goswami tells you what products will help keep your home office organised
I recently went for an interview for a job that sounds really good. It’s something that I always wanted and the company seems great too. My only problem is that at the interview I was told that I would be expected to work long hours that aren’t really fixed. I am not sure if that will go down with my family and I too am a little unsure of whether travelling late at night is a good idea. What should I do? — Seema borana, bandra dear Seema, This is a decision that you will have to make. However, I will say this — if you really like this job and it is something that you’ve always wanted to do, then you will surely find a way. Your first course of action should be to ask the company’s HR to put you in touch with other women at the company who might be able to tell you how they manage the long, unfixed hours. Nearly all companies provide drops when you’re expected to work late. Perhaps they forgot to tell you about that at your interview. Another option is to look for a family member or a friend who can pick you up after work — it will be an inconvenience, but you have to see if the job will be worth it. A colleague who eats lunch with me always gives me dirty looks when I bring any kind of meat. I am the only non-vegetarian in our lunch group but no one else has any problem with it, except her. Last week, I even caught a couple of them rolling their eyes at her when she gave me a ‘lecture’ about why I should give up meat. I don’t want this to become a fight because it is a non-issue, but I don’t want to deal with her looks or comments either. What can I do? — tejal pandya, matunga dear tejal, If she feels okay with commenting against you, then there’s no reason for you not to respond to her lectures. You don’t have to make it a fight though. The next time she says something about your lunch, simply retort with, “You have your eating habits, I have mine.” We know that it doesn’t sound like an effective response, but it is possible that the fact you haven’t said anything so far has emboldened her to move up from rude looks to comments. If that doesn’t work, you could try sitting as far away from her as possible and ignore her. You could also ask a couple of your other lunch mates to help you out and tell her that what she is doing is not cool. Send your questions to womansworld@afternoondc.in before wednesday
>> From mixing up documents to not having enough space for your work, there are a number of things that can go wrong if your home office isn’t organised
I
f you’re considering working from home, we’re sure you’ve thought about how you’re going to divide your time between work and household chores and which room you’re going to work from. But, have you thought about how you’re going to stop an important work document from ending up with your bills? Working from home can be a disorganised experience, especially if you don’t plan properly. We tell you what products (pictures on your right) and tips will come in handy to ensure that your home office is organised.
Space iS important We know that you’re revelling in the idea that you don’t have to be chained to a desk anymore, but you still need to get a special desk (or at least cabinets) where you can keep your work-related documents. You don’t have to spend all the time working from the desk, nor do you need to buy an expensive, multipurpose desk. Even a simple chest of drawers should be enough.
FileS & FolderS A simple folder, like the one from Flipkart (see right, `312), will ensure that you don’t end up mixing your personal and work documents. We’ve picked this bright colour because colour coding your folders is a good idea — having all your work documents in same coloured folders ensures that you will recognise them at first glance. Also, having a diary will
ensure that you don’t have to scribble phone numbers or addresses on little chits that are likely to go missing.
>> Magnetic notes holder from Hitplay
no SoFt-board? no problem It’s only when you don’t have one that you realise the importance of soft boards. It holds all the small but important bits of information that you might need while working. But, you don’t have to get a soft-board installed in your home. This handy, metallic-magnetic memo holder from Hitplay (`949) won’t take up much space and will help keep your home office organised.
deSk lighting This is not really a product to keep your work ‘organised,’ but more of a product to help you work better and efficiently. www.fabfurnish.com has a range of affordable desk lights such as the one on your right (`399), that will suit the purpose.
>> Bright coloured folder from Flipkart
>> Table Lamp from Fab Furnish
USe Space wiSely Working from home means that you won’t have the luxury of a large workspace. So, it’s important that you make good use of the space — clip-on cup holders like the one from Hitplay (`199) help save desk space. We also love the magazine stand from Sanctum (`2,999) which will be of use for media professionals who need a stack of newspaper handy.

« MY BABY & ME MOBILE
Quicker in the kitchen
APPLICATION Baby brand Libero recently introduced a mobile application to help parents with their babies. Priyanka Singh tells you more about it
S >> Waiting endlessly for butter to thaw can be a damper if you want to bake a cake in a jiffy to satisfy unexpected cravings. Grate frozen butter and it will melt almost instantly!
wedish brand Libero, was created about 30 years ago. The baby care brand is now in the Indian market and offers a full range of baby diapers and toiletries. The Libero baby care range comes with skin-friendly natural ingredients which are good for a baby’s healthy skin, which is a key concern for mothers in India. In order to add an virtual dimension to their brand, they have launched a new mobile application called My Baby & Me.
It’s hard to make healthy meals and still retain your sanity, especially if you’ve got a large family to look after. Whether you’re cooking for one or five, these kitchen tips will help, says Rhea Dhanbhoora
Y
ou know how painful it is to go through an entire day at work or even taking care of the children at home and then cook a delicious meal. If you’re single, you’re going to be tempted to rely on pre-cooked meals and junk food and if you’re a busy mum, takeouts and home delivery are tempting when you’re tired. But, by switching up a few things in your kitchen and buying a really big freezer (we’re not kidding, it’s the most important part of your kitchen!), you can make cooking a quick, simple and fun task. Take a look:
Use pre-mixes We know that ginger-garlic paste tastes best fresh, as do chili pastes, chutneys and pesto. But, it’s always a good idea to buy a few packets/ bottles of pre-mixes. This way, when you’re too tired to cook, you don’t have to compromise with a bad meal.
make it into ice Store sorbets and cubes of wine so that when you need them in your cooking, you don’t have to look for an entire bottle. A trend we love is to chop up herbs with olive oil and freeze them in ice trays. This helps add a herby punch to your dishes, even when you’re all out of fresh herbs! They taste a lot better than the dried variety too.
peel it qUicker You get pre-peeled garlic and ginger, so we suggest you buy and store those. But, you can also make peeling fresh garlic and ginger easier. For ginger, skip the peeler and use a spoon to scrape off the skin. For garlic, warm them slightly (very slightly, don’t cook them!) and the skin will slip off on its own.
Freeze & store It’s a good idea to freeze and store meat
(chicken, fish, etc.) in bulk rather than having to run to buy some every time you need it. The easiest thing to do is separate the chicken, meat or fish according to how you cook it — small pieces for curries, legs for quick dinner, breast pieces for roulades, boneless cuts for pastas and salads and so on. Freeze them in separate bags and you’ll cut down your time in the store and kitchen.
BUtter it Up So, your family has a cake craving and you’re ready to pop a quick sponge in the oven. But, waiting for the butter to thaw can be a problem. Here’s a quick tip — grate the butter into your dry ingredients as it softens much quicker this way! So you can make pies, cookies and cakes without waiting hours for frozen butter to thaw.
smoother smoothies Don’t have time to make yourself a smoothie? That’s not a good enough excuse not to include it in your diet. Make it easier by cutting fruit and vegetables and freezing them in zip lock bags. Then for the rest of the week, you have smoothie packs ready to mix with water or milk for a healthy drink in a jiffy.
daal or even soup), cook it in double or triple quantity and freeze it. This is great for when you need a meal in a hurry.
chapatis in a hUrry This is really important for Indian families. Chapatis are a staple of every meal and more often than not, you’ll be cooking a fresh batch to avoid staleness. Want a quick-fix secret? Wrap them in cloth and store them in an air tight container. Then, when you need to serve them, just put as many as you require in the cooker for two whistles and you’ve got fresh, hot chapattis.
Use scissors Get scissors that can quickly cut through chicken skin, cut up little herbs and if they can crack nuts too — you’ll never need anything else!
sqUeeze it oUt We love squeezy bottles. You can store your sauces in them to squeeze into dishes, icing to top cakes and cookies with and even dressings for quick salads without any fuss or mess. All you need to do is shake up the bottle and you’re ready to go.
store marinade
crispy Fries
Some people freeze marinated meat, but if you’re wary of defrosted water mixed with marinade to cook it, this is a better idea. Make smaller packets/boxes of the marinades and curry masalas that you use most often. It might take one entire weekend do it all, but it will make the rest of your month much easier.
Don’t want to compromise with packet fries that never taste of real potato? Here’s an easy fix. Cut up potatoes into strips and store them in plastic wrap in the freezer. The best part about this is that if you fry them frozen, you’ll actually get crisper fries than usual.
cook in advance We know this is beginning to sound like more work, but we promise it will help. Every time you cook something new (rice,
cUt deFrosting time One quick way to defrost meat is to run it under water. But, if you want to save water, you can instead place it on anything aluminum. It helps thaw meat much faster.
The My Baby & Me mobile application is a mother’s companion during her journey from a would-be mother to becoming an actual mother. The app lets expectant mothers track the progress of their pregnancy with the built-in pregnancy tracker and also avail weekly tips on having a healthy motherhood. Especially beneficial for working parents, this application will assist them in remembering important dates regarding their baby’s health, appointments with the doctor and information on their baby’s normal weekly/monthly physical growth, health and immunisation. Designed in a very easy-to-use layout, the application is divided into two main sections — pregnant and baby care. For minor pregnancy related queries and remembering important things related to your little one, this free application can be really helpful.

I am 29-years-old and I think I am quite a fun girl. I am not bad looking either. I have a great job that keeps me a bit less socially active than I would like. I am single. I have been single since college. I have dated, but have not been in anything long-term or committed in any way. This has not really been a problem for me since I am busy. But, lately, all I am hearing from my friends and peers is...

I am going to propose tonight. Do you think she will like this?

ou and your partner are very much in love and moving in seems like the next step for your relationship. You’ve discussed it and the idea of living together sounds great to both of you. Fantastic! However, bear in mind that there might be several small things that are completely off the radar now, but will take on more importance once you actually move in with your partner. Some of these ‘changes’ will drive you up the wall, while the others you will have to learn how to deal with. We are here to give you a teaser of the things that are bound to happen once you move in together.
BitchinG? What? When? You might love your guy to pieces, but there are times when you wonder what you saw in him in the first place. That’s when you go home, call your BFF and bitch your heart out about the many disgusting and exasperating habits that the love of your life has. But, once you move in, all that stops. The only time you can let off steam without him witnessing
it is while you are travelling or when you’re at work. And no, the bathroom is not an option for secret phone conversations, ladies. He might end up thinking you are cheating on him.
all thoSe unpleaSant thinGS Once the move in happens, you will see his ugliest side and he will see yours. Be prepared to know every time he visits the loo for a longer trip, whether he has frequent gas problems, whether he snores loudly or drools while he sleeps and vice versa. Also, the legendary war over the toilet seat is inevitable.
ShavinG ShuSh “Why do you have such a long shower over the weekend?” Because apart from my legs, there are other things to shave! Expect all these invading questions and more, as he’ll know all about the threading trips to the salon and that sometimes during the weekend, you skip showering. And that face pack that
you used to apply before hitting bed? You’ll have to forego that luxury on most nights.
Space iSSueS He likes to sleep on the right side. Well, so do you! And you always thought that his clothes would hardly take any space. But, how could you forget about his gadgets? Did he put his dirty shoes over your Zara heels in the shoe drawer again!? Didn’t you tell him not to do that last time? Space, quirks, eccentricities, habits — you’ll have to learn to adjust to them all.
the three Month teSt Nothing tests a couple’s compatibility more than living together. If you get used to and accept each other the way you are when both of you are under the same roof, then you know that this relationship is for keeps. If not, then in three months both of you will realise that this was never going to work anyway.
« DEAR GRACE, I HAVE A PROBLEM... Dear Grace,

remembers. Should I tell him how we met? — Sharleen Koppikar, Malad Dear Sharleen, Yes, you should tell him. Can’t you see how well this is going to turn out for you? You’ll lose your best friend because she will think that you’re eyeing her man and this guy will definitely think you’re a super weirdo. It’s obvious that his flirty glances didn’t mean the same thing to
him as they did to you. He might have asked for your number before he got off if it did. Maybe you were staring and he was just being polite. Neha Kumar Uppal debuted on telly prime time with industrialist producer B.K. Modi's most ambitious project – ‘Buddha’ – on ZEE TV. She shares with the ADC what is so special about 'Buddha.' By Sandeep Hattangadi
You had participated in beauty pageants, so was acting always on your mind? I had done theatre in my home town Jabalpur (MP) where I participated in various inter-collegiate competitions and also an ideal parliamentary session for which I was supposed to get awarded by the President of India (did not happen, for some reason). That's when the acting bug bit me, the beauty pageant did not bring out the actor in me! You did a film, Soham Shah’s ‘Sher’. Are you paired opposite Sanjay Dutt? I am paired opposite a newcomer in the film ‘Sher’, It is an ensemble cast. What are the TV soaps you have done? I have ventured into the serial arena for the first time. Amrapali is the first role I will be playing on the small screen. I guess I was saving myself for the best. What prompted you to do television? How did you get the role of Amrapali? RBI's Hawkish Stance Reflected In Recent Suggestions To Curb Inflation Say Experts By A Business Reporter
M
any analysts said the Reserve Bank committee's suggestion to keep consumer inflation at the Center of its monetary policy-making indicates the hawkish stance of the central bank going ahead. The RBI committee, headed by Deputy Governor Urijit Patel, was set up last September to revise and strengthen the monetary policy framework. Yesterday, in its recommendation, the committee said inflation should be the 'nominal anchor' of the monetary policy framework, and it should be defined without any ambiguity. "These recommendations clearly carry hawkish implications. After all, the December headline CPI rate of 9.9 %
is well above the current 7.75% repo rate. In other words the real policy rate is negative at a time when inflation is above even the temporary 8 % target rate," global brokerage Credit Suisse said in a note. The panel recommended using CPI inflation as the new nominal anchor, as it is the closest reflection of cost of living and inflation expectations. The panel suggested adopting a longer-term target of 4% for CPI inflation with a band of +/- 2 %. Given the current elevated level of CPI inflation, the panel recommended a 12-month target of 8 % and 24-month target of 6 %, before the inflation target is formally adopted. However, some experts believe the panel recommendation for adopting monetary policy which
is centered on inflation will be a shift from traditional policy-making and will also bring RBI policy calibration closer to the international practices. "We see the RBI's shift to inflation targeting as a step in the right direction. The time span over which it can be achieved will vary according to a number of factors, such as the rains or the global growth cycle or oil prices," Bank of America Merrill Lynch said in a report. Barclays, in a note, said for the RBI to become inflation targeting, as suggested by the panel, it needs active cooperation from the finance ministry. "This will be crucial in removing administered prices and adhering to FRBM-defined fiscal deficit targets," Barclays said.

Shinde calls Kejriwal ‘mad’ CM; ‘Chosen Madness’, says NCP

MUMBAI | THURSDAY, JANUARY 23, 2014
M
UMBAI/NEW DELHI: Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde on Tuesday called Arvind Kejriwal a “Veda Mukhyamantri” (mad chief minister) over his street protests and ally NCP too joined in the direct attack saying “CM in Delhi” stands for ‘Chosen Madness’. Kejriwal continued to be at the receiving end for his two-day dharna which was called off last night with the BJP raising the pitch dubbing him and his ministerial and party colleagues as “unguided missiles” and saying they should behave responsibly as they are now bound by the Constitution, reports PTI. AAP’s outside supporter Congress said theatrics and drama, use of irresponsible and intimidating language and flagrant violation of law and Constitution have no place in our democratic polity “When I was in Kherwadi police station in Mumbai’s Bandra area, I did not get leave because there were Sena (led) riots. Similarly, yesterday (in Delhi), because of a ‘veda mukhyamantri’ (mad chief minister) sitting there (on dharna), I had to cancel the leave of policemen,” Shinde, who was targeted repeatedly by Kejriwal, said. He, however, did not name the Chief Minister. Shinde’s remarks came while addressing a meeting at Hingoli in
Sushilkumar Shinde Marathwada region where he spoke about an instance in the 1970s, when as a policeman, he could not get leave after his marriage due to work pressure. Kejriwal had called Shinde corrupt and inefficient and dared the Home Minister to evict him from the dharna venue near Rail Bhavan during his protest against the Delhi police. Upping the ante against AAP, Congress spokesperson Randip Sur-
jewala said the latter should look within and realize the inconvenience caused to common man due to their “theatrics and drama” of agitation. Congress General Secretary Digvijay Singh taunted the Delhi Chief Minister asking why did he send AAP leader Yogendra Yadav to negotiate with Lieutenant-Governor Najeeb Jung to end the stir. “Kejriwal said that they will not negotiate. It’s not a grocery shop. But ulitmately they did negotiate. Yogendra Yadav negotiated with the LG” and wondered whether to trust their words further or not,” he said, adding Kejriwal has no respect for law. Another party spokesperson Sandip Dikshit said the agitation “drama was staged by AAP to take away people’s attention from other issues, they were not able to address. “Leaders of AAP should realise they cannot remain unguided missiles anymore as they are now bound by the Constitution. Still they believe like unguided missiles,” BJP leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said. BJP leader Arun Jaitley described AAP protest as “unacceptable” and said it would not appeal to the Lok Sabha voters as it is anarchic and lacks the qualities required for providing much-needed political stability and responsible governance. Tharoor may be asked to clarify; Sunanda’s son rules out foul play N
EW DELHI: Police may ask Union minister Shashi Tharoor and others to join the ‘probe’ into the mysterious death of his wife Sunanda Pushkar, a day after it was directed by a magistrate to investigate suicide and homicide angles in the high-profile case. Investigators are ‘examining’ the report by the Sub- Divisional Magistrate to chalk out future course of action in the case following the autopsy report mentioning ‘poisoning’ as the cause of the ‘sudden and unnatural” death of 52-yearold Sunanda, sources told PTI. They said police may issue notices under 160 of CrPC (which en-
tails witnesses to join probe) to Tharoor and 11 others including Sunanda’s brothers and son asking them to join investigations. Asked if Tharoor will be questioned, the source said police was looking into the factors which caused Sunanda’s death and if required, the Union minister may be asked to clarify certain things. Meanwhile, Shiv Menon, Sunanda’s son, ruled out that there was any foul play, saying both Tharoor and his mother were “very much in love” despite their “occasional differences” and that he did not believe the minister was capable of harming her physically.

Poll survey suggests near sweep by BJP in MP, Gujarat N
EW DELHI: BJP is projected to make a near sweep in Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls with Narendra Modi remaining the top choice for Prime Ministership, according to an opinion poll. In Maharashtra too, the poll conducted by CNN-IBN and CSDS projects BJP-Shiv Sena combine ahead of Congress-NCP coalition with 2533 seats as against 12-20 seats out of
48 seats, reports PTI. The survey shows BJP getting 2327 seats out of a total of 29 in Madhya Pradesh and 20-25 of the 26 Lok Sabha seats in Gujarat. Congress is projected to get 2-5 seats in Madhya Pradesh and 1-4 seats in Gujarat. In terms of poll percentage, BJP is projected to get 50 per cent in Chhattisgarh. Among the PM candidates, Modi continues to be the top choice leaving Rahul Gandhi a distant sec-
ond. 46 per cent of those polled in Gujarat wanted Modi to be PM, while only 16 per cent support Gandhi. 40 per cent respondents in Maharashtra prefer Modi as PM, a jump of 19 per cent in a year, while 14 per cent prefer Gandhi as PM, almost the same as last year, the poll said. Interestingly, even in Madhya Pradesh 46 per cent preferred Modi over their Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan for the post of PM.
NCP on Wednesday was non-committal on whether Sharad Pawar will work in a UPA government headed by Rahul Gandhi but indicated all options of the party supremo becoming prime minister are open depending on ‘circumstances’. “Till now the Congress has not declared its prime ministerial candidate. A leader heading the Congress campaign (does not mean PM candidate)... There is a difference between the two,” party spokesman D P Tripathi told reporters.

The EC will also seek suggestions and cooperation from them for the smooth conduct of polls.

IN BRIEF Arora storms into quarters
Federer trounces Murray while Nadal toils past Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov; Azarenka latest women’s casualty
M
ELBOURNE: Roger Federer fought back from a mid-match stumble against Andy Murray onWednesday to set up a classic Australian Open semi-final with Rafael Nadal, as women's champion Victoria Azarenka became the latest star to fall. After Nadal battled through an unexpectedly tough quarter-final with Bulgaria's Grigor Dimitrov, Federer showed both his vintage best and his fallibility in beating Murray 6-3, 6-4, 6-7 (6/8), 6-3. The Swiss great was electric in the first two sets but he tightened as he neared the finishing line, and was broken when serving for the win before passing up two match points in the third-set tiebreaker. However, he extended Murray in a 19minute hold at the start of the fourth set, then got the crucial break for 5-3 and, after setting up a third match point, he grabbed the opportunity with an ace. "I thought Andy did well, he kept the ball in play and put the pressure on me and unfortunately I couldn't get it done in the third set, with either the serve or the forehand missing. So I am happy to get the win in four," Federer said. "I am much higher than I was last year and that's very satisfying just because I have confidence in my movement." Federer, in his 11th consecutive Australian Open semi-final, will face the man who has become his Grand Slam nemesis, winning their last five encounters at major tournaments. But a day after Novak Djokovic's three-year Melbourne reign was halted by Stanislas Wawrinka, Nadal also flirted with disaster before getting out of jail against rising Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov. The 13-time Grand Slam champion, troubled by a huge blister on his racquet hand, went a set down against the exciting young prospect and, facing set points in the third, he was tottering. But Dimitrov, 22, went just long on the first set point and Nadal saved another before the Bulgarian gave him a one-set lead when, gifted an easy winner off a net cord, he ballooned his forehand out. "I was so lucky," admitted the Spaniard, who ran out a 3-6, 7-6 (7/3), 7-6 (9/7), 6-2 winner to set up a meeting with Federer in his 22nd Grand Slam semifinal. Djokovic's defeat by Wawrinka, who will play Tomas Berdych in the other semi, ensures that one of them will be able to challenge either Nadal or Federer for their maiden Grand Slam title. "I'm a bit shattered," said Dimitrov, after his title hopes slipped away. "It's tough losing that match, my first (Grand Slam) quarter-final. I came out expecting nothing less than to win." The women's contest has been even more up-ended and there was an air of resignation rather than shock when Azarenka tamely followed Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova
MUMBAI: Former national 6-Red champion Shivam Arora registered exciting back-toback wins to storm into the quarter-finals, in the Matunga Gymkhana-Dadar Club Open Snooker Tournament on Wednesday. Arora endured a gruelling day when he was taken the distance in both, the round of 32 and the pre-quarter-finals on an actionpacked day of snooker. He faced a strong challenge from formidable R. Girish of Railways who surged to an envious 3-1 lead in the pre-quarter-finals. But Arora changed the script with a late burst, winning the last three frames on-the-trot to seal a nail-biter. Arora, who fired a break of 40 in the second frame, hit an inspired 57 in the fifth that helped him find his form.
Siddharth Thacker grabs Louis Philippe Cup 2014 slot
Roger Federer of Switzerland is congratulated by Andy Murray of Britain at the net after Federer won their quarter-final at the Australian Open Tennis Championship in Melbourne. out of the tournament. The Belarusian world number two was unbeaten in two years at Melbourne Park but she was comprehensively dismantled by an inspired Agnieszka Radwanska 6-1, 5-7, 6-0. "I'll be fine tomorrow. I'll be working tomorrow. It's not the end of the world. But I'm not happy with what I did today," said Azarenka. It ends a sometimes unhappy run of 18 wins at the tournament for Azarenka, whose loud grunting and perceived gamesmanship has earned her critics as well as fans in Melbourne. But it was a major scalp for Radwanska, who had lost all seven previous meetings with the Belarusian, and now goes into a semi-final with Slovak 20th seed Dominika Cibulkova.
"It's hard to play someone I lost (to) so many times before. I knew she's a great player. Especially here, she was playing amazing tennis," said Radwanska. The upset also ensures the tournament will have a new women's champion with none of the semi-finalists -- Radwanska, Cibulkova, Li Na and Eugenie Bouchard -- having won before. Cibulkova reached only her second Slam semi-final when she also won against a favoured opponent in fast-rising Romanian Simona Halep. Halep is set to break the top 10 in next week's new rankings, but she froze in her first Grand Slam quarter-final as the energetic Cibulkova dominated 6-3, 6-0 in one hour exactly.
Paes-Stepanek, Bopanna-Srebotnnik knocked out M
ELBOURNE: Veteran Indian tennis ace Leander Paes and his Czech partner Radek Stepanek were knocked out of the Australian Open men’s doubles competition after going down in straight sets in the quarterfinal here today. Paes and Stepanek, seeded fifth in the event, were downed 2-6 6-7 (4) by the 13th-seeded French combination of Michael Llodra and Nicolas Mahut. The contest, which lasted a little less than and one and half hour, was quite lopsided with Llodra and Mahut imposing themselves with a powerful first serve. Their dominant service game meant that
Llodra and Mahut did not concede a single break point through the match. The opening set was quite literally a stroll for the French pair as it broke Paes and Stepanek twice to pocket the initiative in just 29 minutes. Llodra and Mahut claimed 27 winners compared to their rivals’ 18 besides being markedly better in their first serve in the first set. The second set was a tad more even with Paes and Stepanek matching up to their rivals but Llodra and Mahut once again dominated the service game to seal the issue in their favour. Llodra and Mahut will now be up against the 14th-seeded Polish-Swedish team
of Lukasz Kubot and Robert Lindstedt in the semifinals. With Paes’ loss today, the Indian challenge in the men’s doubles competition has come to an end. Meanwhile second seeds in the mixed doubles, India’s Rohan Bopanna partnering Slovenia’s Katarina Srebotnnik lost their quarter-final tie to Australian pair of Matthew Ebden and Jarmila Gajdosova who won 7-5 6-3. The Australian duo await the winners of sixth seeded pair of Romania’s Horia Tecau and India’s Sania Mirza who take on Pakistan’s Aisam-ul-haq Qureshi and Germany’s Julia Georges in the other quarter-final.
MUMBAI: Siddharth Thacker emerged triumphant in the 0-15 handicap category with a nett score of 40 points to win the club qualifier at the Willingdon Sports Club and book his ticket for the Louis Philippe Cup 2014. Thacker thus earned a slot to represent the Dev Ellora Laqshya Mumbai team and play alongside Jyoti Randhawa, who will be the professional golfer representing the Mumbai team. The Mumbai team will have another two pros on the team, besides two more amateur qualifiers, who will be known at a later stage. Ashish Agarwal was runner-up with a score of 38 points. In the 16-24 handicap category, Vijay Chauhan emerged winner with 36 points, followed by Rahul Sood with 34. The qualifier tournament was played in the modified Stableford format to pick the team for the third edition of the Louis Philippe Cup, India’s official pro golf league.
Sahara Force India presents a fresh new look for 2014 MUMBAI: Sahara Force India revealed its dynamic new look today, offering fans and media a first impression of how the VJM07 will look when it is officially presented at next week’s Jerez test session. The new livery brings a fresh trackside image for the team with the introduction of black alongside the traditional colours of saffron, white and green. “The VJM07 looks stunning and the new livery reflects the way Sahara Force India is evolving,” says Vijay Mallya. “I’ve always believed our cars have been the most eye-catching, but adding black as a main colour gives us a fierce new look.” Key to the new look is the introduction of several commercial partners. The logo of telecommunications brand, Claro, appears on the engine cover and signals the start of a multi-year deal with the famous Mexican brand. There will be prominent Claro branding on the drivers’ suits and team kit. The rear wing end plate now includes branding from Roshfrans, the lubricant oils specialists.

India surrender top ODI ranking after back-to-back defeats
By Chetan Narula
H
AMILTON: India were dethroned as the number one ODI team after they suffered an agonising 15-run defeat in a rain-truncated second cricket one-dayer against New Zealand, who have now taken a 2-0 lead in the five-match series here. India, who desperately needed a win to retain their top spot, made a valiant effort to overhaul the revised target of 297 in 42 overs but failed to cross the finishing line scoring 277 for nine in 41.3 overs, giving Australia pole position in the ICC ODI rankings. The Duckworth-Lewis par score in 41.3 overs was 293. Put into bat, the Kiwis rattled up 271 for seven riding on Kane Williamson's 76 and all-rounder Corey Anderson's rampaging 17ball-44 that included five huge sixes as the hosts amassed a whopping 101 runs in 8.4 overs after rain interruption. India were left with a daunting task of chasing a revised target of 297 as per the D/L method and were again done in by a shaky start and lack of big partnerships which has been their bane of late. Virat Kohli, who hit a century in the first ODI, again top-scored with a sparkling 78 while skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni (56), Suresh Raina (35), Ajinkya Ra-

Tim Southee (4/72) was pick of the New Zealand bowlers while Anderson again displayed his allround prowess picking up three for 67 with wickets of Dhoni, Ravindra Jadeja and Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Shikhar Dhawan (12, 22 balls) and Rohit Sharma (20, 34 balls) wasted a lot of deliveries upfront as India couldn't take advan-
We will have to change a few things: Dhoni
HAMILTON: India will have to make a few changes ahead of the third one-dayer against New Zealand to bring their campaign back on track in the five-match ODI series, Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni said. India were today dethroned as the number one ODI team after they suffered an agonising 15-run defeat in the rain-hit second ODI against New Zealand, who have now taken a 2-0 lead. "Of course, we will have to change a few things and see how we are going to play our cricket. That is something that will be crucial. There have been a few things that have not gone our way but it is very important that if you get a chance you win the game," Dhoni said.
tage of the bowling Powerplay. The loss was all the more heartbreaking for India as they conceded the No 1 ODI position to Australia, having relinquished their top position in Tests to England back in 2011 after 0-4 whitewash. India now travel to Auckland for the third ODI at the Eden Park on January 25, which will be a do-ordie match for Dhoni's men. During the chase today, Kohli and Rahane added 90 runs for the third wicket after Dhawan was bowled by a fullish delivery from Southee and Sharma edged one to Luke Ronchi behind the stumps. Both Kohli and Rahane played confident strokes but the Mumbaikar was done in by Mitchell McClenaghan, who got one to kick up and Rahane only got a thickish edge to the keeper. Kohli was obviously the more aggressive batsman in this pairing, bringing up his 29th ODI fifty in the 23rd over of the innings. In the next over, they brought up their 50-run part-
nership, off only 49 balls. Skipper Dhoni came out to bat ahead of Suresh Raina but they could not take the score closer to the target unlike Napier. Kohli was looking to accelerate when he mistimed and hit straight to the substitute fielder at mid-on. He made 78 runs off 65 balls, with seven fours and two sixes, and walked off dejected as there was yet another hundred for the taking. Raina then came out fighting, looking more comfortable at number six than he has batting higher up, as he chipped in with a quick-fire 35 off 22 balls with six fours. He put on 62 runs in only 39 balls with Dhoni as the chase started looking hopeful once again. But he fell in the 37th over, much to the disappointment of his captain. Thereafter Dhoni reached his 50 in the 39th over, off 41 balls, looking to take India home single-handedly. His efforts came to nought though as he holed out in the deep in the 40th over. Earlier, Indian bowlers dished out yet another listless performance as New Zealand scored an imposing 271 for seven in 42 overs. Williamson set the platform with a polished knock of 77 helping all-rounder Anderson to cut loose as he played a brilliant cameo smashing 44 off only 17 balls with five huge sixes. Ross Taylor also hit 57 off 56 balls with seven hits to the fence. For India, Mohammad Shami (3-55) was once again the most successful bowler. Bhuvneshwar Kumar (143), Ishant Sharma (1-46), Ravindra Jadeja (1-46) and Suresh Raina (1-18) took a wicket apiece while R Ashwin (0-50)'s poor form with the ball continued. Brief Scores: New Zealand 271 for seven in 42 overs [Kane Williamson 77, Ross Taylor 57, Mohammed Shami 3/55] by India 277 for nine in 41.3 overs [Virat Kohli 78, MS Dhoni 56, Tim Southee 4/72] by 15 runs (D/L METHOD).
