hree police personnel, including a senior police inspector, from Daighar police station in Thane have been suspended for alleged dereliction of duty. The three policemen, including senior PI Ashok Jagtap, an assistant PI and a constable, were suspended on Thursday by Thane Police Commissioner, a day after a Mumbai police team busted a prostitution racket which was allegedly being run by a local dance bar. The Social Security Cell of Mumbai police had arrested 14 persons after

raiding a dance bar in Daighar area on the Mumbra-Panvel road in Thane city, and rescued 57 girls who were working there on Wednesday night. The bar owner and another person who was running it escaped, police said. Bar manager Rakesh Shetty was among those who were arrested. All the arrested persons were produced in a court on Thursday and remanded in police custody for two days. The raid was carried out after a tip-off by an NGO which claimed that Thane police had ignored its complaint, following which they informed the state DGP about it, reports PTI.

CITY OPINIONS

Do you think shoddy investigations have led to low conviction rate in the city? Afzal Hussain PR Executive No. The police are working on the basis of evidences and victims’ statements. If both are changed in the court, how can an accused get convicted?

Arun Kumar Journalist No. Convictions depend upon court judgments. If a court acquits a criminal, it does not always mean lapses by investigation officers. Rizwan Ansari Businessman No. Many a time, a victim takes a U-Turn in court, due to which the whole case falls through.

Sanjay Mishra Senior journalist Yes. Many times, police officers are lazy firstly to take an FIR, and after registering the FIR, they do not follow the case properly, due to which an accused gets acquitted. Nagnath Babar Photographer Yes. Because at the time of filing the charge sheet against the accused, the investigation officer does not cover all angles, leaving the accused with loopholes to get acquitted.

The sizeable presence of women and youth voters in the 7.62 crore voter population of the state has led to the NCP and BJP vying with each other to win over the attention of this segment of voters ahead of the 2014 Lok Sabha and Assembly elections. Out of the total voter population in the state, the female voter population is 3.57 crores, while the male voter population is 4.04 crores. The total voter population of the youth between the age group of 18 to 39 years is 3.30 crores.

he strict implementation of the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (Prohibition of Sex Selection) Act, 1994 in the state by the State Health Department has resulted in a marginal improvement by 7 points as against the 2011 census which painted a grim sex ratio in the state. According to a State Health Department survey report accessed by the ADC yesterday, the maximum rate of conviction in cases of illegal sex de-

termination have been reported from Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation areas. While the number of convictions in the once notorious Beed district has reduced, Municipal Corporations like Satara, Kolhapur and Nagpur among others have shown rising incidents of violations of the act. A total of 54 doctors were convicted in 50 court cases. While a total of 38 doctors were sentenced to undergo imprisonment in 34 cases, 16 doctors were asked to pay

Liberated from a liberal education

First it was just the Synagogue, then in 1896, having completed 100 years, it was expanded and named Sha’ar Harahamin (The Gate of Mercy). You can see it today on Samuel Street in Mandvi.

WE have to hand it to young Aditya Thackeray. All those of us with children educated in institutions like St. Xavier’s College have to contend with their swiftlydeveloped liberal cheek, constantly questioning, arguing, and asking for answers. It can be quite tiresome, but then, a liberal education is expected to embody the spirit of enlightenment, which emphasises education for its own sake, personal enrichment and the teaching of values. Not our words, just Wikipedia’s. Plus the college branding is good! But the head of the Yuva Sena has managed three years (or perhaps five) in a liberal college and emerged completely unscathed and untouched by all the liberal garbage that is supposed to equip students for modern living. Witness the ease three years ago with which the youth wing of the Shiv Sena, with Aditya at its head, managed to strong-arm Mumbai University into dropping Rohinton Mistry’s ‘Such a Long Journey’ from its curriculum when it was pointed out by some

THERE is endless fascination within the huge tome called Bombay: Exploring the Jewish Urban Heritage, written by former Byculla boy and student of Barnes School, Deolali, Shaul Sapir. We must warn you that it is not exactly bedtime reading, for the simple reason that it is too large and heavy to cart around (or curl up with!). But placed on a table, it is easy to immerse oneself in the history of the Jewish people in Bombay and the kind of heritage they have left behind for us. Besides the schools, hospitals and synagogues, they created museums and reading rooms, and public spaces like gardens and museums. Byculla, in particular, where a large contingent of the Baghdadi Jews lived, benefited greatly, and to this day there is evidence of not just what the community accomplished, in schools and hospitals, but that they lived here peacefully and unmolested, unlike their fate in

many parts of the world. Off Clare Road in Byculla, there is the entrance to the Padmakar Tukaram Mane Udyan, popular as the PTM Garden. But it started out as the Jew Garden and within its confines, it is believed that there was also a Jewish cemetery, of which no trace survives today. And then there is Masjid Station, which many believe referred to a mosque. According to the book, it refers to the first synagogue in town, built in 1796 by one Samaji Hassaji (Samuel Ezekiel) Divekar, a Bene Israeli, in thanksgiving for surviving captivity under Tipu Sultan. The locals referred to the structure in the Israel Mohalla as the Musjid, and so, when the British built the first railway track from Bombay to Thana, we got Masjid Bunder, or Synagogue Station. There is a lot more in the book, and we shall keep bringing you bits of Bombay Jewish history as we go along.

members of the Bharati Vidyarthi Sena that some parts of the books were “offensive to the Thackerays.” And now the Yuva Sena, filled with enthusiasm for the cause of education, has cracked down firmly on a college principal when she had the temerity to question students who handed her a letter demanding an explanation as to why she was not allowing them to hold a college festival that they had set their hearts on having. Who is Aditya Thackeray, she reportedly asked, and her loyal and respectful students promptly shot footage of her saying so on their smart little phones and handed it back to the political party youth wing for further action, which is, as we know, the only way to handle the entire education system of this country. So now the college will be holding the festival and the students can be proud of themselves for the role they have played in bringing it about. In fact, it might be a good idea to hold a special function to felicitate them and use this as a case study in how to bring a stubborn principal to heel when she insists on knowing what is good for you..

It had to be radio – what would you expect in 1963 when even television was in its ‘beta’ stage, with a few wavy lines and tremulous images and voices passing for broadcast in New Delhi! But you remembered the moment you received the news of the Dallas shooting, coming home from school with nothing on your mind but the thought of the final examinations looming just a couple of days ahead. And you wondered why adults seemed so distraught, though the thought that newspapers would never be carrying pictures again of a live and personable John F. Kennedy tugged at the heart-strings, as did the innumerable pictures flashed across the world, showing blood on the First Lady’s pink suit faced with grey, and a pink pillbox hat above dazed eyes. What a long journey the world has made since then. We remember what we were doing when Indira Gandhi was assassinated, when Rajiv Gandhi was blown to bits, when the World Trade Centre came down, when Osama bin Laden was taken out. Or we would, if it were not too much, too soon and all the time!

hile the state government has finally brought up the revised directives for school buses, the teachers are not happy. Stating that the teachers will be held responsible in cases of mishaps, accidents or any damage caused to the students traveling in the school buses, angry teachers have planned to boycott the board exams. Last week, the state education department had issued a Government Resolution (GR), which stated that any mishap or accident caused involving students traveling in the school buses, the principal will be held responsible. Being unhappy with this directive, the teachers have asked the state government to revise and change the GR failing which they will protest and boycott the SSC, HSC board exams.

Ensuring education Unique REAP project to stop tribal children from migrating and losing out on schooling By A Staff Reporter

N

ovember 20 was a unique day that saw a unique hostel for tribal children in the tribal hamlet of Lahe, off Khardi highway being inaugurated. The uniqueness is that these children, who would have migrated with their parents to work, will now not be

Father (Dr.) Trevor Miranda (right) at the function. deprived of their education. The other unique feature is that the boarding is in the hamlet itself and one of the tribal inhabitants has given his house to be used as the ‘boarding’ for these children. Two couples from the hamlet have volunteered to be the ‘parents’ and look after the kids. In rural areas, especially among the Katkari tribes, migration to other cities to work in brick kilns and sugar factories is a common thing. Poverty and landlessness forces them to migrate for their survival. Every year after Diwali, families migrate and return only in June. They take their children

along with them, which means that their education is hampered. This cycle is repeated every year, and thousands of tribal children lose out on education. This problem has been engaging the minds of REAP (Reach Education Action Programme), an NGO which works in the area. REAP networks with about 100 Zilla Parishad Schools in Bhiwandi, Sange, Shahapur and Khardi areas to bring quality education to the tribal children. It also runs a boarding for tribal girls in Dolkhamb, Shahapur Taluka, to encourage tribal girls to complete high school. Currently, 40 tribal girls are studying there. Since the last two years, REAP has been toying with the idea of doing something to prevent migration of kids from happening, and came up with this idea of a six month temporary boarding. The concept was not easy to sell. Several meetings were held with the villagers to convince them about the plan. Even the school principal and staff went around convincing them. Finally, the plan was inaugurated yesterday by the Director, Dr. Trevor Miranda, in the presence of the zilla parishad area development officials, head master, school teachers, the village sarpanch (who also happens to be a teacher in REAP’s programme), school-going children from the village and villagers. The school officials said that this was a step in the right direction. The director announced that this was a pilot project, and if it succeeded, many more six-month boardings would be opened in villages next year to prevent children losing out due to migration. The director also announced, to cheers, that REAP would provide toilets and solar lights in the village.

Goa MLA is a Portuguese citizen, home ministry to inform Bombay HC By a staff reporter

T

he Bombay High Court will be told that the Goa Vikas Party (GVP) legislator Caetano Silva, may attract provisions of disqualification as the Home Ministry has found him to be a Portuguese citizen, thereby losing Indian nationality. A high court petition filed against Silva alias Caitu alleges that he registered his birth in Portugal just two years ago, on July 21, 2010 claiming that it amounts to having Portuguese citizenship. The petition is filed by Valanka Alemao, the Congress candidate, who lost against him in the recently held Assembly election. Valanka has thus sought Caitu’s disqualification since he becomes a Portuguese citizen, who cannot contest election in India. Though she had filed the petition on 18 April, she had declined to comment on its content stating that it won’t be proper on her part to disclose it. After a detailed verification with Portuguese government, the Home Ministry has found that Silva had taken citizenship of Portugal and hence he ceased to be an Indian citizen. The findings will be conveyed to the High Court which is hearing a case on Silva’s citizenship. Alemao said, “If the accusation is correct, then a Portuguese citizen functioning as Goa MLA shall be a fraud on the Constitution of India. Under the Constitution of India, points out Adv Coutinho, no person can be a citizen of India if he/she has voluntarily acquired the citizenship of any foreign country. One of the fundamental criteria to contest elections in India is that the candidate must be a citizen of India.”

he Bandra police, investigating the Rs 5.33 crore heist at Mahim Causeway on November 14, said that apart from the eight arrested accused, at least five more are wanted in the case. Officials said that constable Mayur Dangde from the Navi Mumbai police was one of the important planners of the robbery. According to the Bandra police, the heist was being planned for over a fortnight before the accused orchestrated it. The police said that Khushbuddin Shaikh, one of the courier boys who is also the main accused in the case tipped the others saying that he had been allocated the job to ply a consignment worth crores of rupees. “While Khushbuddin tipped them off, constable Dangde and Bhagaji Zhave, a retired deputy commissioner of police’s driver were the

However, on Thursday, officials said that at least five more are wanted. “While the heist was being conducted, there were two vehicles of the accused that were closely watching the heist for anything untoward. They had been instructed to strike only if they saw the courier boys retaliate. But since the courier boys gave in, the men never got out of their vehicles,” said the official. The police said that of the valuables worth Rs.5.34 crore that were robbed, the police have been able to recover 14 kg worth Rs.5 crore. The eight arrested accused had stocked the booty at their residences across Navi Mumbai, Pune and Mumbai. They had also sold jewellery worth Rs.5 to 6 lakh which is yet to be recovered. “We are trying to identify the jewelers who bought the stolen goods,” said the official.

Bhatia added, “The PAPs have been offered compensation which was probably the best deal given in similar land acquisition cases. CIDCO was extremely keen on coming up with an airport in the MMR.” “If required, we are toying with the idea of setting up the new airport on land reclaimed from the sea near Panvel creek. Is it not one of those rarest of the rare cases? The man should have been hanged. Is not what he did a monstrous crime? In Mumbai, cases of theft, robbery, housebreaking, assaults, chain snatching, car theft are making headlines in newspapers. It is being said that Mumbai’s population has zoomed: Lakhs of people do not have homes, no water to drink; the struggle for survival has been hard. Sheer survival makes people commit crimes. There are people who are so desperate that they say while outside jail, they go hungry and spend sleepless nights on footpaths, they can

And they also know that police are not very keen about collecting proper evidence and making the required investigations. According to reports, there are more than two crore pending cases in the country. When this is the case, where is the question of proper punishment arising? It is clear that there is a growing perception that a crime does not get the right kind of punishment in our country. This is a reality which gets undesirable results: The criminal thinks he can get away with murder…

And she added she would go on making sustained progress. Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) Arvind Kejriwal has promises to get electricity bills cut by 50 per cent and also get total control of Delhi police. The BJP leaders have promises to make Delhi a safe place for women and active progress on

all fronts. None of them have promises to get onion prices down. After the election, all the vegetable prices as well as the cost of many essential consumer items will remain the same as ever. In fact the prices may escalate. What the Delhi folks need most is a reduction in cost of essential articles. Strong steps by the government can bring down prices. Steps against hoarding by retailers and middlemen, opening of a chain of fair price shops, direct procurement of vegetables from farmers can bring down prices. Why have politicians of all the parties remained silent on the subject? Why have they not, in their manifesto, promised to address the most serious problem that is plaguing citizens? What the citizen in Delhi wants is a big cut in vegetable prices. But party leaders who are on a hectic campaign trail have no intention at all of giving the aam aadmi the relief he wants. It is cruel that they are talking about such trivial things like double-decker buses on flyovers. It becomes clear that no party which makes all sorts of election promises will give the Delhi citizens what they want most. What progress has Delhi achieved during the time the Congress party’s Sheila Dikshit was in power? What she claims is that her party has achieved progress and that she will continue to keep up progress. And she does not give any detail of the progress Delhi has achieved. Winter has come and thousands of people who sleep directly under the sky will shiver in the deadly cold without any clothes to keep themselves warm. Some good NRI will distribute some blankets and clear his conscience. The government has no plan to provide the homeless a roof over their heads. Reports will soon appear in newspapers, giving details of deaths due to cold. Will AAP do anything about it? It too has plans only on paper. And will Sheila Dikshit or Arvind Kejriwal be able to take measures to protect women? The number of crime cases in Delhi has increased since the terrible ‘Nirbhaya’ happening. Whichever party comes to power, there will be no change for the better in Delhi. Politicians play a game – it is a tough one to get power. They do not think of the voters: They think of themselves. They fight elections with no holds barred. Both the BJP and the Congress are attacking the AAP. The BJP was silent when home minister announced a probe into charges that the AAP was getting foreign funds. The BJP and the Congress have experienced, tough politicians. Like a pack of wolves, they may tear to bits the poor, innocent deer – the AAP.

Bharat Ratna a perfect tribute to Sachin SCHOOL children need to know about Sachin Tendulkar and his work in Indian Cricket. The Maharashtra State Education Board has taken the right step by deciding to include a chapter on the God of cricket. Tendulkar was a Master Blaster and made a mark in International cricket when he was a teenager. He then went on to achieve more laurels and finally the Bharat Ratna. By releasing postage stamps, a chapter on the legend in school books and conferring the Bharat Ratna the government has given a much needed boost to the retired life of the Mumbai batsman and has also given students a chance to know him and be inspired by his life and achievements. — C.K. Subramaniam, Sanpada

MAA Tujhe Sachin Ka Salaam, Amul Butter Ratna’ reads the Amul hoarding. The magnitude of a tribute paid to a sportsman like Sachin Tendulkar, proves his caliber and human qualities. A person who has hung on for 24 long years in International Cricket, which is almost like giving his life to the game, has achieved something that no other yesteryear Indian Cricketer has ever done. Sachin deserves the adulation and tribute he has been receiving. He has never been embroiled in any unpleasant controversies and could have hung on for another 5-10 years, but the BCCI babus put such pressure on him to retire, that he had to call it a day. Though he has retired, he will continue to be an inspiration to the present and coming youngsters in cricket. To be honoured with the highest civilian

Well played, Prithvi Shaw

LITTLE BLASTER: With his amazing record of 546 runs, Prithvi Shaw is a talented player that should be picked up by the MCA and trained. TEENAGE sensation Prithvi Shaw deserves all the possible accolades for his brilliant knock of 546 runs, which sounds like a team total in a Harris Shield tournament. This happens to be the highest score by an Indian in all forms of OF cricket and is the 3rd LETTER THE DAY highest in World Cricket. 14-Yr-old Prithvi missed the world record by a mere 20 runs which is currently held by CJ Eady made at Hobart in 1901-02. While the comparison of such talent with the legendry Sachin Tendulkar is inevitable, the media should not go over board and put

BRAVO: The government’s decision to award the Bharat Ratna to ace batsman Sachin Tendulkar and to release postage stamps in his honour is a good one. award the Bharat Ratna is a big achievement. In fact it looks like this award was specially created for him. There will be no other Sachin Tendulkar to play for 24 years and 200 tests with 100 international centuries. — K.V. Raman, Malad

CONGRATULATIONS to Sachin Tendulkar for winning the highest award that can be given to a civilian by the government, the Bharat Ratna. This is indeed a great honour. Sachin’s career has been characterised by constantly delivering and he holds some scintillating records of runs scored. His 24 years in cricket are conspicuous by the absence of any scandal or tittle-tattle. He remained focused on his job and always spoke in measured words, ensuring that was always ‘proper’ in public conduct. Above all, he seems to have followed his late father’s advice of not taking short-cuts and never giving up, till he reached his goal. As a result, he has achieved infinite popularity amongst his Indian fans. What a way to go, pressure on the youngster who has a lot of path to cover even before getting into the Mumbai team. A lot of young talent with similar tall scores & promise has faltered at higher levels and one only hopes it doesn’t happen with Prithvi who has a long and brilliant career ahead of him. The Mumbai Cricket Association should take note of Prithvi’s innings and the youngster, along with similar talent should be handpicked and given extensive coaching under top coaches and even sent abroad to fine tune their cricket. Sachin Tendulkar could also have a word with the youngster and guide or advise him on future steps he needs to take to make it big in cricket. — S.N. Kabra, Goregaon

with millions of fans cheering you and shedding tears at your departure from a game! No sportsman in India has ever received such love and adulation. Well done Mr. Tendulkar! — Rajendra K. Aneja, Lower Parel

IT is a matter of joy that the Government of India has decided to confer the Nation’s highest civilian award – the Bharat Ratna on our God of Cricket Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar. He is the youngest and the first sportsperson to receive this award and deserves it for his greatness for being a wonderful ambassador of the game. He has made us proud and put the nation on the global arena. He mesmerised the entire Nation with his superb cricketing ability and we cannot imagine cricket without him. He has maintained the same level of consistency and passion for the game for over two decades and will remain a role model for upcoming sports persons in general, and cricketers in particular. THE North Bengal railways passing through famous sanctuaries have become a deadly predator by running over elephants while they cross the tracks and killing them. It is noted with huge concern and utter anguish that the railways have callously envisaged the tracks through these precious sanctuaries. Statistics reveal that between 1974 and 2004, 27 elephants perished after being knocked down by freight trains. Very recently, the whole world witnessed a dangerous accident where an elephant carrying a

SACHIN was given a tumultuous farewell and he deserved it. However, some of the cricketing fraternity thought that HE was given undue importance and other cricketers who retired recently were left in the lurch. Sachin received more attention and laurels than others even in retirement and it is natural that only the first is recognised. He has also been one of the best based on his overall game, consistency, behavior and character. He was an enigma on the field and made batting look easy. The board played its part well and ensured that there was a smooth transition with his retirement. Like they say, all good things must come to an end. —Jayanthy S. Maniam, Sion

‘JUST as the Congress spent lakhs so that the Mahatma looked as if he was living in poverty, many including the media have bleached Sachin’s image. But were the ethics of Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman or Kumble any less? But take a close look at ‘God’. The Ferrari episode: Michael Schumacher was supposed to have presented it to him as a gift. Why a German would give a cricketer anything is best left unasked. But now the story is beginning to unravel. Sachin had endorsed his signature version of the FIAT Palio. He had to be paid, but that meant taxes. So FIAT purchased a Ferrari and got Schumacher to gift it to complete the charade. Sachin even got the import duty waived through a media onslaught. Then surprise – 22-month-old baby died miserably as parts of her body were found dangling from a railway bridge at Jaldhaka. The centre only woke up when the international print media highlighted this news with graphic pictures showing the scale of the disaster. As the reports indicate, the railways and the Forest Department are both equally responsible for these unwarranted accidents. It is high time that the PMO intervenes and finds out a lasting solution. It is also alleged that the vacancies of the forest Department remain unfilled and that motormen do not restrict their speed to 30-40 km an as they approach the elephant corridors. Stringent regulations to the extent of suspension should be ensured to save the surviving estimated 550 elephants in the region. — Bikram Banerjea, Mumbai

Abuse of authority THE fact is that unauthorized and misuse of government machinery for keeping a watch on private individuals and the public, is an abuse of authority. The operation by two investigative websites shows Gujarat Home Minister Amit Shah illegally ordering the surveillance of a young woman, based on the instructions of his boss. The urgent need of the hour is that Narendra Modi has to clarify and explain this

Sachin sells his ‘gift’! What a Godly ethical act. Then take the ball tampering incident. The media never showed it in India, perhaps based on the BCCI’s orders, and BCCI slam dunked everyone to wrap it up as they wanted it. But watch this link: http://bit.ly/1bnSWRL and make up your own mind. Last, the Harbhajan ‘monkeygate’ snafu. Ponting has questioned Tendulkar’s statement. Ponting may have an anti-India image but Adam Gilchrist has also done it. Kumble says – wait for my book. If it was in favour of Sachin, he could have said it long ago. Looks like he wants to tell the truth after Tendulkar retires. But forget all these people. The God himself has not said anything. Why? Because the “establishment man” will ensure that he does nothing to prevent the goodies from pouring in. Can anyone tell us such stories about Dravid, Laxman and Kumble? — T.R. Ramaswami, Kandivli

IT is a Herculean task to remain in top form and play the game for a long period and remain successful in a career spanning almost 24 years. Sachin did this in style and his scintillating form with the bat showed that he is the star performer. With 51 test centuries and 49 one day centuries he was a force in Indian cricket. The way he executed the pedal sweep shot, the delightful square cut and delectable leg glance, all made him a complete cricketer. Having made a mark as a school cricketer, and developed his skill as a test cricketer. He is a living legend of Indian cricket and does make an impact with his impressive stroke play, impulsive approach and inspiring form. Sachin Tendulkar can and should be called Scintillating Sachin Tendulkar. — S. Ramaniam, Vashi

illegal surveillance of the woman and anything else will be indicative of the double standards of the BJP. It is high time a sitting Supreme Court Judge must be appointed to investigate the probe to safeguard the interest of women in general and check the abuse of authority and unbridled power. — Bhagwan Thadani, Mumbai

Hapless residents LOOKING at the plight of the hapless Campa Cola residents, a couple of stray thoughts happened to cross my mind: Was the BMC justified in providing civic facilities and collecting taxes from the owners of the unauthorized flats? If not, then the affected people can justifiably seek legal redress by demanding a full refund of all municipal taxes paid over the last quarter century or so. I can imagine a situation where an illegal slum was demolished instead of a building like Campa Cola. I am sure, all politicians would have rushed to the rescue of the residents and seen to it that the demolition is stopped at any cost. But unfortunately, the Campa Cola denizens happen to be honest tax payers, and hence, are not eligible for the support of the political class. — Arun Malankar, Santa Cruz

s the rift between social crusader Anna Hazare and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is widening every given day, many supporters across the country have made a beeline to pacify Anna. With less than a week to go for Delhi Assembly elections, the relations between Anna and Kejriwal appeared to be unraveling. Against this backdrop, AAP supporters virtually throng Ralegan Siddhi and urge the Gandhian for his support. Hazare’s Hind

Swaraj Trust office in Ahmednagar district was overcrowded yesterday as the upset AAP workers kept on pleading for Anna’s support. Some AAP workers in Delhi have also kept Anna’s office staff busy with continuous phone calls. These workers were keen in knowing the reason for his bitterness towards Kejriwal. They also insisted for Anna’s blessings. However, according to sources, Anna refused to budge and inch. According to Anna, “It’s time for people to take over the reins and enter the politi-

OLLYWOOD doesn’t have to work too hard to create roles for their older male stars. They can do just about anything they did when they were younger, and get to romance women half their age. But even the biggest screen icon can’t do anything about aging, no matter how hard they work to stave off the ravages of time. Last Vegas is the geriatric version of The Hangover, its biggest attraction being the four stars Michael Douglas, Robert De Niro, Kevin Kline and Morgan Freeman — a dream team for director Jon Turten-

UNIT MALHOTRA trying, in a well-meaning way, to show the Dharma Productions universe how the other half lives, could have done a minimal amount of research beyond watching a DVD of Lagaan. Then he would have known that a collector and a zamindar is not the same thing. A collector is an IAS officer, not a village hick who sits around in a haveli, surrounded by lathi-wielding men. He would also have had his ‘NGO type’ heroine, know that it is not environmentally sound to build a huge brick-and-mortar bridge over a tiny river for a village of 270 people. He would also, perhaps, have known the difference between an architect and an engineer. His excuse would be that Gori

the bachelor party in Las Vegas, even though they haven’t met in years. Archie (Morgan Freeman), recovering from a minor stroke, is feeling smothered by his son; Paddy (Robert De Niro) is a recent widower wilting with loneliness; Sam (Kevin Kline) is depressed in the old people’s home, even though he has an understanding wife. It’s feels good for them to get away and try to relive the good old days. It’s as predictable as can be, the underlying note being, old age sucks. The old guys do exactly what you’d expect them to do -- drink, dance, flirt, fight, hit on women. For a romantic track, there’s Mary Steenburgen — a radiant presence. It would be kind of sad, if it wasn’t for the stars who can carry off almost anything with their talent and charisma. There are as many funny one-lines as there are cringe-worthy moments, but the overall cheer exuded is somewhat likeable. Don’t expect any great insights into the problems of aging in a country that’s not too kind to its senior citizens, and it’s entertaining.

Tere Pyaar Mein is not realistic cinema. Point taken. So it should work as a mainstream romcom. It fails there too. It doesn’t make you laugh, or cry, or come out of the the-

POOR

HIS is a super thriller that you won’t forget in a long time. A remake of J. Lee Thompson’s 1962 original, Scorsese adds his directorial touch to the story which is based on a book by John D. MacDonald. Sam Bowden (Nick Nolte) is a lawyer who fourteen years ago, was a public defender in Atlanta and was assigned Max (Robert De Niro) case. Max was a three-time rapist who had skipped out on the first two charges. Sam who could’ve got Max a lighter sentence, instead brought out crucial evidence that nailed Max for 14 years in the slammer. Since then, Sam has moved on to private practice with a major firm in Florida. He settled down to live with his wife, Leigh (Jessica Lange), and 15year-old daughter, Danielle (Juliette Lewis). Life for him has been good, until Max came out of jail looking for him. As for Max during his prison stay, he taught himself to read, learned the Bible and more importantly about the legal system. He also beefed up his muscles and engulfed his body with crazy tattoos. Upon his release from jail, his only focus

was to seek the man who he feels was responsible for all the time he spent in jail. Max meets up with Sam and begins showing up everywhere the Bowden family goes, dropping threats, and even carrying out a few, including killing the Bowden’s family dog. He also puts fear into Sam after he befriends his tennis mate and beats her at his house. Sam is broken down even further when Max meets up with Danielle and tries to seduce her. Sam turns to a private investigator for help and begins to consider harsh measures to evict Max once and for all. But it’s not that easy, for if Sam wants to save himself and his family, he realizes he’ll have to do it by himself. Also includes an informative booklet on the movie. — By Verus Ferreira

Anyway, Sriram lands up to fetch Dia back, and gets dragged into the bridge battle. The enemy being the collector (Anupam Kher), who wants to build a chemical factory in Jhumli. The film is as shallow as the characters accuse each other of being, and worse, it’s boring. Imran Khan has done this role so many times, he can breeze through it, so can Kareena, who just has to tone down her exuberance because she is playing a serious character — occasionally, a what-the-hell expression slips through. LOOR Space Index incentives are offered not only to fresh proposals but also to the existing proposals. Housing societies of landlords or occupiers may convert their earlier proposals in accordance with the modified regulations provided the redevelopment scheme is in progress and has not been completed, i.e. where full occupation certificate is not granted. However, this additional Floor Space Index is subject to the submission of a licensed structural engineer’s certificate for structural stability, to the effect that the building is designed to take the additional load for constructing additional FloorSpace Index, if granted and certifying the feasibility for structural modifications i.e. it should be feasible to convert the tenements earlier proposed with180 sq. ft. carpet area into tenements of 225 sq. ft. carpet area. The higher FSI does not automatically becomes permissible in cases where construction is already underway as per old plans, unless a provision was made in the plans, foundation, etc., for subsequently increasing the area of rooms or the number of floors, without endangering the structural stability of the buildings. In order to streamline the cumbersome procedure for granting NOCs for redevelopment the step of issue of letter of intent prior to issue of NOC has been completely eliminated by the government. Now, it is no longer necessary to obtain a letter of intent. Now, the landlord or cooperative housing societies of landlord or occupiers can directly submit their proposal for redevelopment of their old cessed properties in A to G wards of Mumbai as per the prescribed format attached along with required documents and information. After the Board receives the complete proposal with documents, it will scrutinise it and an NOC for redevelopment will be granted after the Board is satisfied that all requirements are fulfilled by the applicant and approval has been given in the MBRRB meeting. A scrutiny fee of Rs. 5000/- or whatever amount is fixed by the Board from time to time will be charged for each proposal. Once the documents have been received along with application and all legal and technical requirements have been completed with, the NOC with be issued within three months. If the NOC holder fails to start the redevelopment work within 12 months from the date of issue of NOC, the Board reserves the right to cancel the NOC. Importantly, the NOC holder is expected to complete the construction of the new buildings for the rehabilitation of old occupiers within 30 months from the date of issue of NOC. Just in case he fails to do so, extension to above time limit may be granted by the Board, depending on the merits of the case, on the payment of an extension of fee of Rs 5,000 or an amount as decided by the Board. On granting of the NOC for redevelop-

TetraVex is a challenging brain teaser. The object of the game is to fill the grid with the tiles so that the patterns on the adjacent edges of each tile match, much like aligning domino tiles. The object of the game is to place all the tiles in the grid so that the figures on the adjacent edges of each tile match. You can place any tile anywhere in the grid, but you cannot place a tile in the grid if its edges do not match all of its neighbors. Find a digit that occurs only once on a given puzzle. You know that this digit must lie along the outer edge of the grid, since there are no other tiles that can match it. You can simplify solving by cutting out the nine squares and juggling them in the grid.

APUSA: Pune FC continued to keep within striking range of the top-spot after rallying to hold Salgaocar FC 1-1 in an I-League Round 10 encounter at the Duler Stadium in Mapusa, Goa on Friday. Striker Darryl Duffy (4th minute) put Salgaocar in in the lead early on in the game before striker Riga Mustapha (60th) equalised for Pune FC from the penalty spot. With a point each, both sides held on to their positions with Salgaocar FC (1st, 18 pts) staying just a point above Pune FC (2nd, 17 pts). Pune FC began the game by conceding just four minutes after kick-off. Left-back Gurjinder Kumar headed a ball back to goalkeeper Amrinder, but found striker Duffy lurking inside the box. The Scotsman capitalised and tapped in with the Pune FC custodian having no chance. At the other end, striker Riga went

on a run down the left flank but was checked by the Salgaocar defense. Thereafter, Pune FC settledand around the quarter hour mark, Riga once again went close. Only this time the striker was dispossessed inside the box by defender Augustin Fernandes. At the other end, Amrinder did well to come out and head the ball to safety in front of striker Claude Gnakpa on a counter. A minute later, winger Nikhil Kadam went close. After playmaker Douhou Pierre’s attempt to Riga on the run was intercepted by Gilbert Oliviera, Nikhil snatched the rebound but saw his effort going straight into the rival custodian Karanjit Singh. Midway through the half, Gurjinder came up with a timely block to deny Duffy who controlled Francis Fernandes’ cross in from the left before releasing a powerful shot.

HENNAI: Five-time title-holder Viswanathan Anand’s reign as the world champion came to a heart-breaking end today with Norway’s Magnus Carlsen taking the crown after a hard-fought draw in the 10th game of the World Chess Championship match, which ended here today. Carlsen, who will be 23 years on 30th November, closed the championship with two games to spare by taking his tally to required 6.5 points out of a possible ten, winning three and drawing seven games. In what could be marked as the dawn of a new era in the chess world, Carlsen showed stellar effort yet again by not going for a tame draw when one was enough for him to take the title home. Instead, the Norwegian made Anand suffer for a long and gruelling four hours and forty five minutes before the Indian could heave a sigh of relief in what was the most one-sided world championship match in modern history. Anand had won the world championship title five times — 2000, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2012 — but ironically was dethroned in his home town of Chennai. In a dubious first, this was the only time that Anand failed to win a single game in a world championship match. Starting with his journey in 1991, Anand had always scored at least one victory in each of the match that he played in the

HENNAI: Admitting that newly-crowned world champion Magnus Carlsen dominated the duel, five-time title holder Vishwanathan Anand today said that the loss in the fifth game of the World Chess Championship match turned out to be a "heady blow" for him. At the start of the match I thought my chances depended on my ability to last long games without making a mistake. This year I have had problems with mistakes creeping in to my play. I tried to pay some attention to that. But in the end it was in vain because the way I lost the fifth game is exactly I thought I could not afford to lose. A fine position in the opening and slowly slip and so on," he noted. Anand might have lost his crown to someone 21 years junior to him but the Indian was a picture of composure while admitting that he committed mistakes today also. "I think today I was just trying to keep playing and at some point started to make mistakes. I made a wrong queen move. I simply don't know the evaluation after the match, the knight ending is pretty dangerous," Anand said about the final game that ended in a draw.

It feels good to equal Richards’ feat: Kohli

By R Eswar

KOCHI: India's batting sensation Virat Kohli might have achieved a rare milestone when he joined West Indian great Viv Richards as the fastest to reach the 5000-run mark in ODI cricket, but the flamboyant right-hander insisted he still has a long way to go. Although delighted to share the feat with Richards, Kohli said he never approaches a game thinking about records. "I was told in Bangalore during the last ODI (about the record) but I did not really remember it because I do not approach a game thinking about records. I said to myself that if you bat well, along the way these milestones are bound to happen," he said at the post match press conference after India defeated West Indies by six wickets in the first ODI of the three-match series here. "To equal a feat with a player like him (Richards) is a very good feeling but it does not stop here because it is more or less the beginning. It is nice to equal his record but still there is a long way to go," a confident Kohli said. The Indian vice-captain smashed a classy 84 and along with Rohit Sharma (72) put on a 133-run stand for the second wicket to set the platform for a comfortable win. Kohli said the wicket was not easy to bat on but it became better as the match progressed. "There was variable bounce on the wicket in the first innings. Compared to that, it was better in the second innings. But the wicket was slow and the ball was turning. It was a flat batting wicket and was on the slower side," he said.

Gayle’s loss a big setback for us, says Dwayne Bravo

With their star batsman Chris Gayle ruled out of the ongoing ODI series against India after sustaining a hamstring tear on his left leg, West Indies skipper Dwayne Bravo said it was the "worst" thing to have happened to them on the current tour. As Gayle made a desperate dive to save himself from a run out chance in the first ODI here yesterday, he suffered an injury and had to be carried out of the ground in a stretcher. He was subsequently ruled out of the remainder of the three-match ODI series. "Losing Chris (Gayle) is the worst to happen to us on the tour. He is our best player. He is no longer available for the series and that is a big blow for us. Psychologically, also it is not good for us. Before we landed in India, we lost Kieron Pollard and now we lost Chris and they are two of our best players," Bravo said at the post-match press conference.

Aussies on top as Johnson’s four wickets destroys England

B

RISBANE: Recalled paceman Mitchell Johnson returned to his brutal best today as Australia blew away England for just 136 to turn the first Ashes Test on its head. Australia, castigated for a top-order failure on day one, roared back to rattle the trophyholders with six wickets for nine in one of their worst Ashes collapses. By stumps on the second day in Brisbane, the home side had cruised to 65 without loss, 224 runs in front, with David Warner on 45 and Chris Rogers not out 15. And it was Johnson, who has been erratic in his Test career and was targeted mercilessly by England's Barmy Army fans in the 2010/2011 series, who sparked the turnaround. The left-armer, steaming in and bowling at hostile pace, captured four for 46 off 13 overs, taking the wickets of Jonathan Trott, Michael Carberry,

Joe Root and Graeme Swann. The confidence flooded back into the Australians, coming off a 3-0 series loss to England three months ago, with Ryan Harris taking three wickets, spinner Nathan Lyon denied a hat-trick and Steven Smith holding three catches. They will now be confident of extending an unbeaten record at the Gabba ground which goes back to 1988. Australia are also trying to avoid losing four Ashes series in a row for the first time in 123 years. England, who lost six wickets for just nine runs, were left to contemplate their heaviest collapse since Melbourne 1990, when they gave up nine wickets for 47. Their lowest first-innings score since the 102 against Australia at Headingley in 2009 came after the key scalp of Kevin Pietersen triggered a clatter of wickets. Pietersen, playing his 100th Test,

was dropped on eight in a sharp caught and bowled chance by Peter Siddle. England were pinned down for 13 dot balls before Pietersen, on 18 from 42 balls, lost concentration and flicked Harris off his pads to mid-wicket, where debutant George Bailey accepted a fine catch. Johnson struck again three overs later when he peppered Carberry with some short deliveries before getting him to edge to Shane Watson at second slip for 40. Then Lyon struck, removing the dangerous Ian Bell (5) and Matt Prior (0) with consecutive deliveries. Smith snapped up a bat-pad catch to dismiss Bell, the man of the last series in England, and took a magnificent sprawling catch again next ball to send Prior on his way after a DRS review for a golden duck. Ashes villain Stuart Broad came out to loud boos and saw off

Lyon's hat-trick ball, but Joe Root was the seventh wicket to fall in the next over for two. Root played away from his body and nicked to third slip, where Smith took his third catch in two overs to leave England shellshocked at 89 for seven. Graeme Swann was next to go, caught close in by Bailey off Johnson for a duck, while Harris dismissed Chris Tremlett (8) and Siddle finally ended Broad's spirited knock of 32, caught in the deep by Chris Rogers. Before lunch Australia had removed England skipper Alastair Cook and Jonathan Trott cheaply. Harris coaxed an edge off Cook to wicketkeeper Brad Haddin for 13 and Johnson followed up snaring the wicket of Trott, who tickled one down the leg-side to Haddin for 10. The first innings by Australia had ended on 295 when Haddin was run out chasing a century.

Ishant gets five, Delhi on top against Haryana N

EW DELHI: Ishant Sharma showed some signs of returning to form with a five-wicket haul as Delhi gained the upperhand against Haryana at stumps on the second day of the Ranji Trophy group A encounter. Ishant bowled with a lot of fire as he grabbed five for 29 in 17 overs as Haryana were bowled out for 138 in reply to Delhi's first innings score of 201. Delhi scored 35 in the second innings as their lead swelled to 98 with Gautam Gambhir batting on 27. Gambhir, however, looked scratchy but did hit a few boundaries in between. regularly causing problems for Haryana batsmen. Rajat Bhatia, bowling his cutters, complemented him well with a four for 32 in 16 overs. Wicketkeeper Punit Bisht had a busy time behind the stumps having taken five catches. Ishant bowled a good first spell, getting the outside edge of opener Nitin Saini (6) and one down batsman Sunny Singh. Then Bhatia joined picture removing left handed opener Abhimanyu Khod (15). Abhi Barot (34) and Rahul Dalal (13) added 33 runs before Bhatia removed Dalal as he was adjudged leg before. Barot was out when Gambhir took a sharp catch at point while Jayant Yadav (0) was removed by Parvinder Awana.

Brief Scores: Delhi 201 in 87.5 overs (Rajat Bhatia 39,, Sanjay Badhwar 4/56). Haryana 138 in 55 overs (Joginder Sharma 35, Ishant Sharma 5/29, Rajat Bhatia 4/32).

J&K SNIFF FIRST INNINGS LEAD ANANTPUR: A collective good bowling effort gave Jammu and Kashmir team a good chance to gain first innings lead against Andhra Pradesh on day two of their Group C Ranji Trophy match. J&K reduced Andhra Pradesh to 191 for eight after ending their first innings at 225. JK resumed at 173 for six and added 52 runs before being bowled out. Number 10 batsman Waseem Raza played a crucial role with his unbeaten 27-run knock.
