Chikki – to be given to municipal school students instead of flavoured milk – has not reached them yet, owing to administrative logjams
By Vishnudas Sheshrao
S
chools have reached the end of mid-term but the chikki – a nutritious diet meant for students studying in municipal schools, is still trapped in the tendering process. According to education officials, students have to wait till 2014 for their share of the chikki. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has allocated Rs.100 crore for chikkis in FY 2013-14. Councillors alleged that civic officials are sitting on these files for multiple reasons and Municipal Commissioner Sitaram Kunte hasn’t helped either. The civic body had made provisions for nutritious diet for these students since quite some years now. Earlier, the civic body used to provide flavoured milk to these students. There were reports that flavoured milk caused food poisoning among students. Then a committee consisting of diet experts and civic doctors advised giving chikkis to these stu-
dents instead of flavoured milk as the latter is nutritious and has no side effects. Earlier this month, the civic body had floated a tender on its official
Size: 30 gms packs for 1,70,000 students and 40 gms pack for 2,30,000 students. October 31 is the closing date for the tendering process. The civic body will then examine the proposals from bidders which will take another one month. The lowest bidder will then get the order and only then will the supply of chikki in schools begin. In addition to this, if something goes wrong in the tendering process, then the matter may escalate to courts too. Maharashtra Navnirman Sena Group leader-designate Sandeep Deshpande said, “(Municipal Commissioner) Kunte seems to be a failure in governing the civic body. He needs to sharpen the edge of his administrative skills for better governance of the civic body”. Deshpande added, “His junior ofwebsite stating the ‘supply of nutri- ficers are not under his control. No ent chikki in 30 gm/40gm pack to one knows where the civic body is BMC students’. Yet another MU bombshell! At the end moment, varsity allots students their own colleges as exam centres; students scurry for hall tickets By Yatin Ingle
T
hough the Mumbai University has streamlined the Third Year Bachelors of Commerce (TYBCom) exams, yet another shocker has emerged in the examination department. After waiting for more than a month, the students of Bachelors of Mass Media (BMM) have got their own colleges as their board exam centres. These colleges have never been allotted as examination centres before, but it seems in haste the varsity had to take this step. Also, students from the concerned colleges have got their roll numbers one behind the other and will be sitting for the exams together. The varsity had issued the students their hall tickets with just three days left for the exams. As per the rule, every year a student has to fill his examination form for the university board exam during July-August period. Once the exam form is filled by the students, the varsity sends the examination hall tickets to the students, along with the exam centre codes. Once the hall tickets are received by the students, they check the exam centre code printed on the hall ticket and confirm their
list. This year, even though the exam forms were filled in the month of June, MU issued the hall tickets to the self-financed streams just four days before the exams. On Monday, when the students collected their hall tickets they were informed that they would be writing their exams in their own colleges. Dilip Karande, Senate and Management member, MU, told the ADC “the trend has started with TYBCom and will now spread to other streams. The Pro Vice-Chancellor and the Vice-Chancellor should be careful about these issues of the students and if it repeats, the varsity and students will have problems. The examination department hastily issues hall tickets making the students to scurry to collect their hall tickets with just a few days left for exams." Similar issues had taken place when the TYBCom students were issued their hall tickets late. Though the MU later hurried to issue the hall tickets, few students received their hall tickets with errors, some had wrong centre codes and reached wrong exam centres and had to rush to correct the exam centres to write their exams. The ADC, when tried to contact Dr Padma Deshmukh, exam controller, MU, she was not available for a comment. Dr. Naresh Chandra, Pro Vice-Chancellor, MU, told the ADC, “I will be personally looking into this issue and students need not about the same.”

Paying obeisance to mighty Hanuman, the greatest wrestler of all time.

Talk of well-oiled men who are getting the traditional rub-down even as the masseur coaxes & squeezes that extra drop of oil from the tiny bottle.
It’s time for a mud-bath for one of the wrstlers even as others recline on the mud in this N M Joshi Marg ‘akhada’.

MUDMEN/MATMEN GO FOR GLORY
restling in India has a rich and varied history. It is one of the oldest events in the Olympic Games, going way back to 708 BC. Bhima in that great epic of Indian history, Mahabharat was the mightiest wrestler of his time, not to forget Jarasandha, Karna and Duryodhan. Even that other great Indian epic Ramayana mentions wrestling and Hanuman, who is today fervently worshipped is one of the greatest wrestlers of all time. Cut back now to Mahatma Phule Vyayam Mandir, Chinchpokli where ardent matmen in the age-group of 16-35 hone their craft, muddling their way in pits of sand and mud. Undaunted by the paucity of funds, this part time fish sellers (plying their trade from 4.30 am to 11 am) practice ardently against each other in mud-filled ‘akhadas’. Do we have an Olympic silver medalist Sushil Kumar or bronze medalist Yogeshwar Dutt in the making here?
These broad-shouldered men get to grips with one other hoping for a pin or a fall in the mud as they grapple and wrestle in the Chinchpokli ‘akhada’.
One for all and all for one, as the wrestlers pose for a group picture.
No quarter given, and none asked for as these daunting wrestlers use their flailing arms and legs to counter their opponents.
Mirroring our times, a wrestler sports a smile after having a thorough bath.

Modi’s best to help I plan Ambernath

ndicating that he was in no mood to grant any relief to residents of Campa Cola Compound, Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan stated that laws should be formulated so that illegal constructions will never be erected in future. Chavan was speaking at Samvad, a function organised by the NSUI yesterday, and made this statement on the sensitive issue while replying to queries of the students. In a reply to a question on urbanisation and slum redevelopment, Chavan said, “We should enforce laws in such way that henceforth, nobody will dare to violate the law in the way it has been done in the Campa Cola Compound CM felicitates a young achiever at the NSUI function, yesterday. case.” “Populist decisions are and once you take such deci- amend them,” he pointed out. taken for vote bank politics, sions, it become difficult to There are barely three

During the event, the members learned about development work in Gujarat and reques-ted the team to visit Ambernath municipal council and help plan roads, sewage and solid waste management. Chaudhari said, “People in India and abroad admire the development in Gujarat and its infrastructure. We had a meeting with Modi in which he guided us about infrastructure development. Union Minister Milind Deora has announced that he will take up the issue with Congress President Sonia Gandhi. The BMC wants the Chief Minister to regularise the Campa Cola buildings in spite of FSI violations, and in a bid to save their homes, desperate residents protested outside Chavan’s residence, demanding that he regularise the illegal structures.

arendra Modi’s development in Gujarat has apparently left a mark on several of Maharashtra’s politicians. Recently, Shiv Sena politicians from Thane, Ambernath, Khopoli and Alibaug as well as Ambernath Mayor Sunil Chaudhari visited Gujarat and met Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and asked for his help in the planning of Ambernath’s infrastructure to ensure that it is as good as Gandhinagar’s. On Chaudhari's request, Modi has deputed one of his best officers, Sagar Ashar, Deputy Manager of Projects in the Gujarat government, to visit Ambernath and help the civic authority in planning out the infrastructure. Ashar is expected to visit Ambernath with his team by the end of the month.

Home Ministry responds to reports regarding transfers of Police Commissioners By A Staff Reporter

Sources in the Home ministry, when contacted, termed the news as utterly baseless and a figment of the imagination.

enior Shiv Sena MLC Diwakar Raote yesterday demanded that the state government enact a stringent law to curb the menace of money lenders in the state. In a statement issued here he stated that the state law passed in April 2010 was set aside by the centre. To make matters worse, the Supreme Court had slapped a fine of Rs. 10 lakh fine for having sided with the money lenders. The Sena leader contended that even after the law was enacted the farmers in the state have continued to commit suicides fed up
with the coercive methods of the money lenders. The Sena MLC stated that whether the loopholes in the failed law were deliberate or result of the ignorance of the law and judiciary department. Raote disclosed that NCP chief and union Agriculture minister Sharad Pawar had visited a villager named Thavru Rathod in Kinhala village of Pandharkavda tehsil and assured him of government support. A day later, Thavru Rathod committed suicide due to the debt he had accumulated. Raote demanded that the government should enact a law to curb money lenders
within a fortnight. He said that the government, succumbing to pressure, brought out the ordinance banning black magic after the gruesome murder of Dr. Narendra Dabholkar. The Sena MLC stated that even after 10,000 farmers committing suicides in the state, the government is still to wake up to the need for a stringent law to curb money lending activities. He warned the government that if it failed to promulgate the ordinance before ensuing Diwali festival the Sena will be forced to launch an aggressive farmers’ agitation over the issue. IN the meanwhile, the victim’s family members are still waiting for justice. It may be recalled that Keenan Santos (24) and Reuben Fernandez (29) were stabbed after a scuffle near a paan shop in Amboli, Andheri (W) on October 20, 2011.
Some men had allegedly started harassing the women in their group, and the boys had objected to it. While Keenan died soon after the incident, Reuben passed away on October 30 at a hospital in Andheri. The main accused, Jitendra Rana, was arrested along with Sunil Bodh, Satish Dulhaj and Dipak Tival soon after the incident, and all are currently lodged at the Arthur Road Jail. A source from the DN Nagar police station revealed that, from the very beginning, they had taken the case on a priority basis, and are producing all the evidences before the court after cross checking them twice, in order to make a very strong case. “As the matter is in court, we cannot say more about it, but the victim’s families will definitely get justice, and the punishment in this case will hopefully deter eve teasers,” the source added.

Frequent power failures plague Shatabdi Hospital, missing tube lights, non-functional ceiling fans and dirty surroundings compound the problem
By Tariq Khan
S
hatabdi Hospital, a peripheral civic hospital in Govandi, is frequented by locals from the eastern suburbs for medical treatment. The hospital proves to be conveniently located for citizens from Mankhurd, Govandi, Trombay and Chembur areas, as the other civic hospital like Rajawadi is located quite far away. The hospital mainly caters to lower middle class and poor families, but it has problems of frequent power failures, non-functional tube lights and ceiling fans. Speaking to ADC, Anil Patankar, the ward committee chairman (M-West) of the BMC, informs, “During the last 15 days, there have been frequent power failures in Shatabdi Hospital. Power supply remains suspended for 4 to six hours at a stretch during the morning hours, causing inconvenience to patients.” According to Patankar, the hospital has only two full-time electricians who work in the first shift, while there are no electricians during the other shifts. “Electricians said that the hospital is in need of new wiring work as the existing electrical wiring is in shambles,” stated Patankar. Patankar further stated,
The lights don’t come on and the fans don’t spin at this not-so-well maintained hospital. “The BMC’s health department officials keep passing the buck and dodge questions pertaining to insufficient facilities at this hospital. Only after I contacted the mayor, the frequent power disruption was contained to an extent.” Few months ago, the hospital received a new MRI machine, costing Rs.8.25 crore and a Dialysis Centre was also inaugurated by none other than Uddhav Thakarey, the Shiv Sena Supremo says Rais Shaikh, Samajwadi Party group leader in BMC.
How serious is India in tackling climate change By Dr. Mukund Aparajit
I

CITY
MUMBAI | WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 23, 2013
s India resisting calls by developed countries to take on specific targets for the reduction of its Greenhouse Gas emissions?, despite the fact that its total GHG emissions are the 3rd largest in volume after the US and China. How can an accord be possible, if India and other “major emitters” refuse to accept responsibility in this regard? India has done in this direction more than it requires doing. Firstly, Climate Change is taking place not due to current level of GHG emissions, but as a result of the cumulative impact of accumulated GHGs in the planetary atmosphere. Current emissions are, of course, adding to the problem incrementally. Even if current emissions were, by some miracle, reduced to zero tomorrow, Climate Change will continue to take place. The accumulated stock of GHGs in the atmosphere is mainly the result of carbon-based industrial activity in developed countries over the past two centuries and more. It is for this reason that the UNFCCC stipulates deep and significant cuts in the emissions of the industrialized countries as fulfillment of their historic responsibility. Secondly, the UNFCCC itself does not require developing countries to take on any commitments on reducing their GHG emissions. This was also recognized in the subsequent Kyoto Protocol which only set targets for developed countries, the so-called Annex I countries. It is inevitable that the pursuit of social and economic development by developing
countries will result in an increase in their GHG emissions, for the foreseeable future. This is recognized in the UNFCCC itself. Despite this, India has already declared that even as it pursues its social and economic development objectives, it will not allow its per capita GHG emissions to exceed the average per capita emissions of the developed countries. This effectively puts a cap on our emission, which will be lower if our developed country partners choose to be more ambitious in reducing their own emissions. Thirdly, India can, by no stretch of imagination, be described as a so-called “major emitter”. Our per capita CO2 emissions are currently only 1.1 tones, when compared to over 20 tones for the US and in excess of 10 tones for most OECD countries. Furthermore, even if we are No. 3 in terms of total volume of emissions, the gap with the first and second-ranking countries is very large. The US and China account for over 16% each of the total global emissions, while India trails with just 4%, despite its very large population and its rapidly growing economy. Fourthly, for developing countries like India, the focus of Climate change action cannot just be current emissions. There is the equally important issue of Adaptation to Climate Change that has already taken place and will continue to take place in the foreseeable future even in the most favorable Mitigation scenarios. India is already subject to high degree of climate variability resulting in droughts, floods and other extreme weather events which compels India to spend over 2% of its GDP on adaptation and this figure is likely to go up significantly. Therefore, the Copenhagen package must include global action on Adaptation in addition to action to GHG abatement and reduction.
“What is the use of these facilities if there is a constant power failure problem in the hospital?” asked Shaikh, who said that he was trying his best to make this hospital a superspecialty one to cater to the needs of the ever-increasing suburban population.
The ADC spoke to the medical in-charge, who clarified, “Power failure in the hospital remained only for few hours on two days recently. There was power tripping problem which has been rectified now. About electrical equipment, we need to ap-
proach the central stores. If stock is in shortage, we have to get an NOC from the department to even buy from our funds. About cleanliness, we have four contract labourers who keep the hospital clean to the maximum possible level.”

have you decided or we may have to make directions,” remarked an angry bench headed by Justice V M Kanade. The Judges expressed displeasure after counsel for passport authorities informed that the Additional Solicitor General was not available for arguments as he was in another court for a different matter. The court deferred the hearing until tomorrow after Bedi’s counsel Niteen Pradhan said he would make brief submissions on Wednesday. Bedi had approached the high court seeking directions
to the passport office to take a decision on her application for re-issuance of her passport. On September 24, the court had given a last chance to the passport authorities to respond to Bedi's petition. Bedi and Salem were arrested in Portugal and extradited to India in 2005. In the same year, she was held guilty of submitting forged documents for procuring her passport and sentenced to five years in jail. In 2007, Bedi was released on bail pending appeal. In 2010, the Supreme Court, while upholding her conviction, reduced the sentence to the period undergone by her
in prison. “Bedi filed application for re-issuance of her passport on September 3, 2012. Her form was accepted and she was given an acknowledgement slip. However, till date there has been no communication. No order has also been passed rejecting her application,” Bedi’s lawyer said. He added that, as per rules, a person’s passport application cannot be granted if he or she has been convicted five years prior to the filing of the passport application. Bedi’s petition states that she wants to go abroad for shooting and her career is affected due to non-availability of passport.

HE CBI’s decision to go after industrialist Kumaramangalam Birla and former coal secretary P.C. Parakh in the coal scam investigation is curious indeed. Violence begets violence, creates more hatred, more enemies M
ANY people speak of law enforcement. There is in the police force a huge administration for the care of detentions and prisons. We try to suppress violence as symptoms, but we allow, at the same time we allow violence to be fed in our daily life, in our family, in our school, in our society. It does not mean much to try to suppress the symptoms. We have to deal with the roots and it’s suppressing violence by violence. It does not make any sense because the person in charge of suppressing violence may have a lot of violence and fear and despair within himself. That is why you have to reconsider the whole thing. You have to bring a special dimension to our way of working. That does not mean that we have to be religious. We have our human nature, animal nature. We have our Buddha nature, spiritual nature. It is possible that the human nature and the Buddha nature can live together with the hidden animal nature in peace. That is called civilization. We still keep our animal nature, but it is in control. It doesn’t have to suffer. We enjoy transformation and healing. And we have to organize our life, individual, family, institu-

We have voted for Congress, we have voted for our governments, but we have not had time in order to help them, to support them, to offer insight, and we leave everything to them. Each of us should organize our life in such a way that we have the time to be there. Touch the reality deeply and understand and get the insight. That insight is for us to live our life, but desire, to remove violence and terrorism, is a also a contribution to our society. The collecgood desire. It is authentic, legitimate. Manmohan Singh haunted by scam after scam IT is not very surprising, in fact, it has since become familiar to learn that in Coalgate or 2G scam the Hon’ble PM is ‘not’ involved and he is above questioning by any kind of Institution/ Committee in spite of the accused in both the scams ‘categorically stating’ that the PM was aware of all the ‘proceedings’ and given his ‘nod’ for implementation of the proposals. There seems to be no ambiguity about their ‘versions’, but the PM is being exonerated even without seeking an answer from him. The PM seems to have the ‘knack’ to distance himself from any blemish as also to help himself to a foreign tour on one pretext or another which mostly is unproductive and nothing but squandering of the taxpayers’ hard earned money. The Nation has
gone ‘astray’ in every aspect and there is no practical approach on the part of the PM to sensitive issues affecting the public nor any sense of involvement by strong evaluation of Pakistan‘s blatant lack of respect towards bilateral peace pacts or for that matter against China’s intrusion. The PM should consider deposing before the JPC to disprove A. Raja, the accused and set himself to steer clear of the ambiguity on coal block allocations to the entire satisfaction of the Judiciary and the Nation. His prolonged silence on almost all the matters of vital concern does not augur well as he is the PM. The PM’s response that he had to abide by the ‘Coalition Dharma’ is not at all the answer as the PM is not expected to be a ‘silent partner’ while
POINTLESS: Creating awareness against drinking and smoking through advertisements is a sheer waste of money. People should be left to decide for themselves whether they wish to smoke or drink.
Misplaced moral policing I am unable to understand and appreciate the stand of the government about smoking, drinking liquor and dance bars. They have dragged this to the nadir of cinema by inserting that stupid and insipid advertisement and the message that pops up every time someone in the film is shown with a cigarette in his or her hand. As free citizens in a so-called democracy, are we incapable of deciding for ourselves whether we should drink or smoke? If we find that all the advertising for 60 years to contain population has failed, why spend money on these silly advertisements? I feel that if a person wishes to smoke (as indeed people have been doing for decades without heeding the warnings) and drinking to their heart’s content, they should be left alone to live their lives. Every one who has cancer is not a smoker and strict non-smokers die of cancer. All drinkers do not indulge in limitless drinking and drunk driving. — Jamshed Irani, Mumbai
Rahul’s speech questionable IN his “emotional” speech in MP, the crown prince has stressed his Party’s strong “commitment” to alleviate the sufferings of the poor in the country. He seems to have conveniently forgotten the “epoch making” slogan of ‘Garibi Hatao’ launched by his late grandmother
in the early seventies. What results it has produced during the Congress’s rule of nearly six decades? If poverty was indeed removed by that measure, then where is the need to bring in the Food Security Bill to help the over 80 crore of Indian BPL populace who are barely living a hand to mouth existence? — Jorhat Singh, Kandivli
This is coalition politics IN the era of coalition politics, two things are of paramount importance: acquisition of new allies and massive contributions to election funds. The UPA II seems to have embarked upon a vigorous campaign on both these fronts. Otherwise, how can one explain the sudden cropping of the name of Naveen Patnaik in the coal scam? Simultaneously, to ensure continuous flow of funds, India Inc. seems to have been chosen as the favourite milch cow by the Congresss top brass. —Arun Malankar, Santa Cruz
Night spots flout rules It is indeed a sad state of affairs that will be witnessed by the Supreme Court order to have dance bars in the state. In 2005, R.R. Patil made a desperate attempt to bring a halt to the dance bars. The repercussion of introducing the dance bars are too many. State Government is having double mind but finding it difficult to supersede SC order. It is indeed a
the Nation is being robbed by the ‘allies’ and should have taken stern action even if it meant dissolution of the Parliament and calling for fresh elections which alone would have established his credibility. For sure, the people dare not think of having Congress in power with the same PM once more. The people deserve much better. — T.M. Uday Shankar, Mumbai
NO RESPONSE: Despite being accused of complicity, the Prime Minister is being exonerated even as he prefers to keep mum about the major scams that have plagued the nation in recent times. ticklish situation. Moral policing under Dhoble was able to bring culprit to books but he was transferred frequently and shunted to a corner in the power play. Now, we will be facing molestation, rape and murder of bar girls in the state and number of them commit suicide by failing in love life, pressure from employers and the lack of monetary benefits despite spending best part of night in dance programmes. Further, some of the dancers are cheated and their pay packets never reach them in time or the pimps take major share of their earnings to ditch them. State Government should be in a position to draw a line and make sure the permissible limits are not overstepped to make the life of people miserable. — C.K. Ramanathan, Khargar
R.R. Patil has vowed not to obey Supreme Court’s order to start the dance bars on which he has a solid grudge for reasons best known to him only. But the recent press reports have proved that the dance bars are flourishing in many parts of
SUPREME Court has rightly pointed about CBI as the ‘caged parrot’ and that is increasingly coming right. CWG, 2 G and the coal scam all exposed the ‘Confused’ Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Now Coalgate enquiry has slowed down after the Prime Minister’s strong justification of allot-

ting coal blocks to Hindalco. The CBI’s total adhocism has come in the open. Instead of taking concrete steps on coal scam, CBI is trying to take a U-turn. If Coalgate decisions were justified verbally by Prime Minister then A. Raja will also say that 2 G allotments were done as per norms then CBI will free Raja as well as they did in Coalgate scam. Again, if Kalmadi says that the CWG scam is not a scam and amount was spent according to the norms then they will let Kalmadi free. Now CBI is under total pressure on Coalgate probe and the investigation agency is totally confused and biased. Why PM’s name was omitted in the charge sheet. Even the Radia tapes will come handy to corner the Government. There is no rule of law as all the cases are dragging giving scope to politicians and bureaucrats to pull their weight forever looting the public money. — Jayanthy S. Maniam, Sion
Mumbai. Now, who will bell the cat? Is he going to accept his miserable failure or pass on the buck to some scapegoat? First of all, as a senior cabinet minister, he OF should learn to respect LETTER THE DAY the court of law as he is not above law. If he can’t and only acts adamant, then he should be a homely minister ideally sitting at home. As the elections are round the corner, he should better start concentrating on it instead of taking out his wrath on useless issues.

Monkeygate episode raises its head again MONKEYGATE continues to haunt Team India even after five years. The closely kept secret is out. In his memoirs titled ‘The Close of Play,’ Ponting played down the line and described the Monkeygate episode as the penalty imposed on Harbhajan Singh after the 2008 Sydney Test was way less than what it should have been. Indian off-spinner was let off time and again even after committing serious offences in the field of play and in front of TV cameras. Monkeygate episode was the worst on-field spat in cricketing history. Even during the body line Test series Down Under, Don Bradman, the most prolific run-getter in the world, did not behave in such a silly manner as the Sardar of Spin did in Sydney. Team India was at the receiving end of that particular series and hence we could not digest defeat and Harbhajan of the ‘Slapgate’ fame played spoilsport once again. During the inquiry into the charges levelled against the Turbanator, Sachin Tendulkar entered the record

SOME time back this was the trait of our neighbour but of late we
seem to have adopted it and have made it a practice to shock ourselves. A couple of days back, none expected us of chasing down 360 in an ODI in Jaipur against Australia, but we shocked everyone (including our own selves )by doing it and that too in style ( with 9 wickets and 39 balls to spare). Two days after this heroism, we were once again set to shock ourselves when at Mohali we firmly had the match in our grip but then let it off in one dramatic over. With 44 needed by Aussies in 18 balls, things were very much going our way until Ishant bowled those juicy 6 balls that left the visitors a mere 14 to score of the last 2 overs. We had just shocked ourselves once again in a span of seven days. After Chetan, Ishant has become the most talked about SHARMA in Indian cricket it seems. Lets hope in the remaining series we shock ourselves in the first way .... Shock of the second type will certainly leave this cricket loving nation in a gloom. — Abdul Monim, Vashi

After researching and setting up the syllabus, MU has finalised 26 innovative courses from the streams of Arts, Science, Commerce and Management, which will be begin from the academic year 2014-2015. Last month, MU had conducted its annual academic council meet where the Management Council stated that permissions should not be given to new colleges to start up traditional courses. This decision was made as the varsity had conducted a survey and noticed that there has been a drop in the admissions for traditional courses as well as lesser em-
ployment opportunities being generated by the same. MU had asked its academic council, the management council and its senate members to look for innovative courses which would help students to secure employment. Once the list of 26 such courses was made up, it was put forth in the senate meeting of MU and finalised with the approval of the senators. When the ADC spoke to Dr. Naresh Chandra, Pro Vice-Chancellor, MU, he said, “These courses are innovative and will produce job opportunities for the students. They have been designed by experts and academicians. A few courses from the fields of Engineering however, will need approval from the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE)”

Scope: The daily activities of a management consultant are often multifaceted. Projects can alter drastically in length depending on the type of consultancy, firm and the requirements of the client. They can call for an individual or a large team and may be grounded in one location or across various sites including overseas. Business strategy: This involves longrange planning, the restructuring of a company’s composition, validation of services and products and a general business evaluation of the company.
C
onsultancy usually needs the classification and assessment of a problem or the psychoanalysis of a specific area of an organisation, the accounting of results and the conceptualisation of recommendations for perfection. Setting up as a self-employed consultant is a popular career option for experienced managers or professionals who are looking for a pristine challenge. They are attracted by the option of running their own business or are seeking a second career or alternative employment to combat idleness. At the same time, sovereign consultants may miss the security of a regular income and a company benefits package; suffer closing down and reduced job security or face difficulties in maintaining work/life balance. These issues should be measured carefully before starting out on your own.
Financial and management controls: These comprise the setting up of budgetary control systems, profit planning or capital and revenue budgeting, office reformation and managerial arrangements. Consulting for perfection Continued from pg 13 « ing and the organisation of retail and wholesale outlets. Actually, a consultant’s job is to recommend a company on betterments and enhancements that could be made to its business. However, the array of work in consultancy is tremendously varied and consultants can be found in almost every business sector. The variety of work available assures that a career in consultancy provides varied and attractive opportunities to any hardworking graduate. Skills: The necessity of Consultants is actually considered very important because they can get faster outcomes than the company or department. This is done through their specialist skills and the attention that they can provide by having precise objectives and projected time frames. People within the business may be too focused on the ‘business as usual’ and they need the energy, focus and skills of management consultants to help move the business smoothly or advance its performance. The candidate should have deep industry knowledge, proven analytical skills and ‘real world’ execution experience. The candidate should be a problem solver who advises people on the best options and then works with them to achieve their objectives. They are thinkers and problem solvers who know how to convince others that change is needed. He or she needs to be able to conceptualise their knowledge and experience in a way that can be leveraged by multiple clients across multiple industries. The candidate should have the quality to come up with compelling ideas with less information. Team working skills are necessary as he has to work with different teams on every
project. Strong communication skills (not just presentation skills) are required for dealing with various scenarios across various clients. Job Prospects: Consulting houses employ MBAs and other post-graduates right out of school or from industry. Most new MBA hires come into a firm as associates; after few years they move to the next level, where they manage case teams. After managing projects for a couple of years, consultants may be upgraded to principal, as a result of which the focus shifts to more intensive client work and the promotion of services. Finally, after seven to ten years within the industry, a consultant might be promoted to partner. The welfares of partnership include big increases in salary and responsibility. The fundamental function of partners at most business firms is to grow clients and sell them the firm’s services. Thousands of persons call themselves consultants and make money by selling their suggested services, and they present plenty of opportunities for employment. If you like the idea of helping businesses and have a particular interest in computers, human resources, corporate communications, mobile communications, health care, financial services, real estate, e-commerce, or some other specific field, there is a good possibility that you can find a place within an organisation. The area of IT services in particular has developed over the past decade. Many of the biggest consulting firms, including IBM Global Services, Capgemini, and Accenture, receive a significant section of their revenue through systems integration and outsourcing engagements. These business houses work with a client to develop hardware and software solutions and then often administer the systems.
Eligibility: There are no specific academic requirements that exist for management consultants, but nearly all employers want at least a college degree in a related field. Employers generally favour candidates who have studied in one of the following areas: business, economics, statistics, mathematics, computer science and logic. More familiar consultants should consider a Diploma in Professional Consulting which will increase your knowledge, skills and behaviours to function as a management consultant. It is meant for people who want to enter management consultancy from a functional discipline, or for those who desire to develop the skills and knowledge required to function in the pasture of management consultancy.
Remuneration: Starting salaries depend on principal qualifications, skills and experience. MBA holders are remunerated at a higher altitude than consultants with normal under-graduate or postgraduate degrees. Average salaries in the first couple of years for graduates are around Rs.20,000 to Rs.30,000 per month. Chief consultants can earn within Rs.50,000 a month. While directors and partners earn between Rs.1,20,000 to Rs.1,50,000 a month. Consultants while working in an establishment get performance-related bonuses. Other perks include company shares, pensions, personal medical cover, dental and optical insurance, etc.

I want to apply for my MBA. Which are some of the colleges I can apply to for round 2? —Karina Most schools that have an MBA program have 3 application rounds. As an international student we do not recommend applying for round 3. However, you still have time as most colleges’ round 3 deadline ranges from November end to December. Assuming that you have already done the GMAT, you should aim to apply before the round 2 deadlines for some of the top universities. Along with the GMAT you will need a resume, about 2 recommendation letters, official transcripts and essays. You could have between 4 and 10 essays to write so it’s essential you begin working on them soon after they release, to meet the round 2 deadlines. Here are some universities you can consider – the deadlines might change this year. However this is an estimation based on last year’s deadlines. Also your list will vary depending on your GMAT score, your previous academic record and your work experience. Cornell University – November 28, Northwestern University – December 4,

T
hose who have grandparents or old people in their house have a kind of ‘Guide book’ gifted by the almighty. Grandparents are like dense trees that always provide a soothing shade to their children as well as grandchildren. There are some things in life which money can’t buy and one of them is ‘experience’. Old people have gone through three stages of life – childhood, adulthood and are presently in their old age. They have ample of experience. My grandfather is no more but my grandmother is with me since my birth. Her way of doing things are very different than mine; I always see a sense of confidence in her. Her innovative ideas of cooking, her techniques of healing as fast as possible, her formulas for ever glowing and brightening skin never fail to flabbergast me.
Her perception and perspective both are very different than mine. She has a futuristic way of thinking. The advice which she renders to me is commendable and instantly pulls me out of my worry. But with expert skills, she has also entered into her second ‘childhood’. I am always vexed with some of her actions and sometimes I even speak arrogantly to her. But she always keeps on requesting me to be patient and calm and tries making me understand her state. She asks me to not pounce on her when she doesn’t eat her food as in my childhood too, I managed to skip my food many times, she tells me to not get irked when she repeats a sentence again and again and makes me remember when I was small how much I loved to hear the ‘Cinderella story’ until I was in deep slumber, she wants me to hold her hand because now she is not able to move as quickly as before with her weak legs and
makes me realise the way she held my finger for the first time so that I could walk properly. The momentous thing she has ever told me is that I must not lose my temper and become insolent when she forgets the topic of our conversation as in her heart being with me is the most significant thing. Earlier, I never realised the seriousness of why she kept on repeating all this, but now after entering adulthood I understand that since long she had been indirectly trying to explain me that she has entered her ‘second childhood’ and I must understand her sentiments. By not understanding the feelings of old people, today a majority of folks have been abandoning them which is disheartening. India, a country where parents are considered equal to God, has 1018 ‘old age homes’ today which is appalling. My heart breaks when I see cases where children behave in a ferocious manner with their old parents and often send them to ‘old-age homes’. Was it to see this day that they raised their children with love and affection? The trauma of being abandoned cannot be beared by anyone. I remember how Gandhiji had responded when he was called to inaugurate an ‘old age home’, he said, “Don’t call me for the inauguration, instead call me on its closure.” Old people are a treasure of wisdom and knowledge, but today we fail to understand it. Children must not consider them as a trouble-bubble. It takes time to understand their ‘new’ world but if one understands it, he/she will explore an entire different world which has been still a lot left to be unleashed.

MUMBAI | WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 23, 2013
While western culture continues to attract children and youth of India, a fraction of society has started realising the value of Indian culture and tradition which is reflected in Indian classical dance and music. In an exclusive interview with Bharata Natyam exponent and documentary filmmaker Puja Balerao, Vijay Shanker finds out what being a classical dancer is all about. How did you develop your passion for classical dance? I had a natural inclination for dance and am fortunate that my parents realised it, as I started learning dance at a tender age. My first experience was playing the role of an ant in the Marathi Avishkar theatrical production ‘Durga Zhali Gauri’. I was quite thrilled to be doing this at the age of five. Fortunately this experience led me to encountering renowned Bharata Natyam exponent Dr. Sanddhya Pureccha and I soon started learning dance from her.
What has been your experience with Dr. Sanddhya Pureccha? I am fortunate and blessed to have a guru like Sandhyatai. She is not only a brilliant exponent but also a scholar of Sanskrit and the Shastras. I have also learnt the significance of texts like Abhinaya Darpana and Natya
Sastra. Through her guidance I have also had the privilege of meeting her mentor Acharya Parvati Kumar. You are also a documentary filmmaker and photographer. What are the parallels in Bharata Natyam and film making? Are they different?
I really do not perceive filmmaking and Bharata Natyam as being totally different. They are just different ways of looking at the same things. Dance is a highly timed rhythmic way of utilising space while filmmaking and videography involve capturing time and movements while the utilisation of space makes them more appealing. While dance belongs to traditional media functioning for years together, filmmaking is more technically evolved and caters to mass communication. As an environment and social documentary filmmaker, I have had the privilege of moving in and around the United States and India, having worked in award winning projects. Film making and Bharata Natyam are impressionistic in their own way, each
<< Puja Balerao encouraging the artist to explore beyond art. What do you love more, Bharata Natyam or film making? Bharata Natyam is my base and my first love, but filmmaking takes you a step further, allowing you to capture moments and whole civilisations for eternity. Both are significant and important for me Do you feel classical dancing is lucrative as a career? You can’t and should not look at classical dance as business for making money. Classical dance is an art that is priceless and you should not dance for money alone. You are representative of a divine art form which is the expression of the soul, and you have to reach out to the supreme to dance for the almighty. You have to take the audience to a higher spiritual level and hence your role is supreme too. Have you performed in the US? What was the response? In my recent performance in the United States, somebody remarked, “Your dance is so effortless and flowing. There is something so graceful about it. I have not seen anyone perform Bharata Natyam like this before.” What are your future plans? I am currently producing a documentary on sea-turtle conservation in Costa Rica called Pura Vida (Pure Life) and my next will be my film on dance in India, which is in the preproduction stage. I am also a member of UNESCO and have a unique opportunity to interact with people of different nationalities and work on an international platform both as a dancer and as a media professional.

Nail it! Creativity has found a new canvas - NAILS! Speaking to Naressa Coutinho about a career in nail art and spa is Prashantt Sonavane, a certified international Nail expert and a master educator for brands likes Bio-Ionic and Affinage. As attractive as a pair of well-groomed hands are, the job of a nail technician is equally exciting.

sn’t it ironic that we humans love to style and decorate our dead cells, and by dead cells I mean our hair and nails? For some, their favorite dead cells are their nails and owning a nail care kit and a queer line of nail polish colors their bailiwick. If you happen to share a similar obsession then this inert gift might just help you make a prosperous career out of it. The world needs nail technicians and while it may sound like a heap of science, it is creativity-personified. Yes, nail art is the science of beautifying nails. Prashantt Sonavane has been a nail care technician and a professional trainer for over 9 years with his own training institute, The Nail Art Academy, as also a guest trainer at various other spas and salon institutes. “A nail technician is one who possesses the knowledge of nail enhancement and nail spa. Of which nail art enhances the beauty of your nails with intricate designs and nail spa being a rejuvenating system is set up to pamper one’s hands and feet using various spa products like body butters, scrubs, aroma oils, fizz tablets and much more,” he explains. Sonavane chanced upon this career while he already had his roots set in the spa and salon industry. “One of my clients, an airhostess by profession, suggested nail art to me 10 years ago,” he says, “When the concept of a full-fledged nail salon was fairly unheard of in India. She used to travel abroad and would carry nails along with her to maintain her overall get-up. I was almost certain that the nail industry would grow rapidly because a well-groomed pair of finger nails and toe nails was always well-received besides being attractive. Now, I look back and think of it as a wise decision.” He went on to attain a degree from the Aveda Institute
in Atlanta, USA and even prides himself with receiving the Brands Academy Maharashtra and Goa service excellence award. One training to be a nail technician would require to understand the various aspects of the career like client consultation, nail prep and sanitation, natural nail overlay, tip application, gel/acrylic application on tip, permanent French manicure, permanent nail art, Bridal nail art, 2D, 3D, floral funky and trendy nail art, backfills, repairs, sculptures, soak-off, hand and foot spa and much more. The course work could last a week in case of a crash course or about a month for a full-time course. In his experience, Sonavane says that most of the times, you wouldn’t require a formal accreditation to practice as a nail artist. However, his years of experience have also seen many <<Prashantt short-term nail artists Sonavane who fail to stay on in the field. If one wishes to join the cruise line or three-star or five-star spas, he/she would require a certification. “Some of my students take this up as weekend careers and make a dime out of it,” says Prashantt Sonavane. This is in the case of working individuals who could take it up as a part-time career option. Full-time nail technicians can look to earn anywhere between Rs.15,000 – Rs.50,000 per month. “The entrepreneurs out there can even think of their very own Kiosk set-up or nail bars and make a prosperous career out of it,” advises Prashant, “Starting a business would require initial investments and table space. But be sure of impressive
« OFFBEAT CAREER
returns from this career choice.” Highlighting the advantages of entering the Nail art industry, Sonavane speaks of high-end clients, international travels, freedom of creativity and job satisfaction. A nail technician would have to dedicate a few good hours of work (five hours) with minimal physical or mental exertion. On the other hand he says, “You need to make sure you use good products as China made products give you unstable results. The job sometimes requires one to forfeit a few days of rest as clients often return to the same technician if they like their service and who would want to lose their clientele that easily.” A nail technician ought to widen his/her knowledge base through regular training workshops and following up on the latest trends like glitter nails, Swarovski studded nails, velvet touch and other fancy embellishments. “It is a career that pays extremely well with only 20 per cent of a nail technician’s investment with regard to products. Moreover, unlike a nine-to-five job, starting at the computer screen, here you wouldn’t realise how fast time flies and you will be amazed by your own creativity. It is simply a fun career to be in,” he concludes. The nail art industry is growing at a rapid pace and it would be a waste to let the reins slip. Nail the career now! JOB SATISFACTION OR MONEY?
The tussle between job-satisfaction and money seems to be a never-ending debate. It is very rare to be able to find a job where you can enjoy both. We asked youngsters which one they’d pick if they had to select one! Definitely job satisfaction. Your work is something you do all day and more. It’s with you even when you aren’t actually working. If I didn’t like what I did, no amount of money would help me survive it for more than a few months. Lucky for me, I get both where I work - the challenges that keep me motivated as well as money that lets me get by and more! —Mahek Virani Product quality analyst
he one man who moon walked over our hearts and whose voice was a treat to the ears. The one man who the world can never forget; the legend, the star, the king of pop - Michael Jackson. No young singer ever sang, or has ever sung to this day, the way Michael Jackson did. It is not an exaggeration to say that he was the most advanced popular singer of his age in the history of recorded music. His untrained tenor was uncanny. By all rights, he shouldn’t have had as much vocal authority as he did at such a young age but he was brilliant in all ways. His dance moves were impeccable and Michael Jackson was undoubtedly one of the most inspirational stars in the past few decades who mattered to the world and people still go gaga over his tracks like ‘Thriller’ and ‘Beat it’. Born in the small town of Indiana with 4 brothers and 2 sisters, MJ was a mentally fragile, abused Afro-American child who spent his formative years in a soonto-decay Midwestern factory town with the Civil Rights Movement bubbling around him. Yet, he became a part of the his brothers. He enjoyed years of starfirst ‘supergroup’ of the 1970s along with dom and popularity and his death on
June 25 came as a shock to the world. We lost so much more than a legend. We lost the final man to give us a glimpse into how the world of pop music should be. Unimaginable record sales, worshipful attention, unthinkable live performances, and an intangible, word-less radiance that will never be fully described. Sure, we all know that the world will never be the same without a man such as Michael Jackson, and yes, one could argue that his presence on this earth made us all feel a little better about the current state of pop stardom. But more importantly, Michael Jackson will forever be the last real, honest-to-goodness pop star this world will ever see. No one will ever be able to match his greatness, because his greatness will never be capable of full explanation and we will never stop loving Michael Joseph Jackson. Not only because he told us, with Quincy Jones, Lionel Richie and a host of other superstars, that ‘We are the World’, but also because, as he told us in ‘Dangerous’, he wanted us to help him ‘Heal the World’. And he wanted us to do it as one. Michael Jackson’s death not only marked the end of an era, it marked the end of pop music as we knew it. Rest in peace, Michael Jackson. You knew pain, you knew the love of millions. Without you, we’ll have to start healing all over again, together.

I think I’d pick money and make the job I’m doing satisfactory by constantly doing more. You can constantly add value to what u do, whatever it is, by improving on work quality. I would definitely pick money. —Irfan Morbiwala Event Management
I would pick money because I need it the most now and I think generally too, youngsters today, thanks to the commodity markets in an all time boom, are probably willing to do work they may not necessarily like but if it pays, then surely they’d go for it. The pull is so strong towards owning and possessing things that I think youngsters are willing to forego the satisfaction part of it, at least in the short run. —Srilakshmi Kurup Professor

If I had to choose I’d choose job satisfaction any day. If I’m not happy doing what I’m doing the money will make no sense. If I earn less but go back home happy it’s worth the effort I have put in.

EIJING: India and China appear all set to sign a landmark agreement on border cooperation to avoid army face-offs like in Depsang valley in Ladakh recently but plans for putting in place a liberalised visa regime look elusive. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who arrived here to a warm reception on his three-day visit on Tuesday, will meet Chinese Premier Li Keqiang today after which the Border Defence Cooperation Agreement (BDCA) will be signed, reports PTI. This assumes significance in the context of the Depsang valley episode in Ladakh earlier this year when People’s Liberation Army (PLA) troops
made an intrusion and stayed put for three weeks. However, there are indications that an agreement for liberalising visas for the Chinese is unlikely to be signed by the two countries in a virtual tit-for-tat after China issued stapled visas to two Indian archers from Arunachal Pradesh recently. Giving indications that decks have been cleared for signing of BDCA, sources said, “Don’t ask about the outcomes now. We will give you details on Wednesday.” The BDCA was cleared by the Cabinet Committee on Security last week as part of further confidence building measures to avoid incidents
along the Line of Actual Control which has seen many intrusions from the Chinese side. The BDCA also provides for setting up of a hotline between the DGMOs of the two countries on the lines of the mechanism India has with Pakistan. The deal is expected to be cleared after talks between Singh and Li, who will host a lunch for the Prime Minister. This is the second meeting between the two leaders in five months after the Chinese Premier visited India in May. Today, President Xi Jinping will also host a banquet dinner for Singh, signifying the importance attached to the Indian leader’s visit. Pics: PTI

Banks Investing In Innovation To Boost Revenues By A Business Reporter
R
etail banks across the world are ‘increasingly investing in innovation as a means of generating revenue and controlling costs amidst the recovery in the global economy’ says a study by IT major Infosys. Banks are looking towards technologies that can simplify their operations and deliver a richer customer experience. In particular, mobile innovation is beginning to gather pace, with 77 % of banks deploying or planning to deploy a mobile wallet solution, the study said. About 77 % of banks surveyed are increasing investment in innovation. “This is an encouraging trend
as the 2009 study revealed only 13 % of banks had increased investment, the study, which surveyed 148 banks in 66 countries, said. “As the global economy recovers, retail banks across the world are increasingly investing in innovation as a means of generating revenue and controlling costs, it said. Also, 60 % of banks surveyed have an innovation strategy compared to just 37 % five years ago, when the study was first issued, it said. More than half (58 %) of banks surveyed believe the ability to deploy new systems in components would have a positive impact on their ability to innovate. Mobile locationbased offerings were cited as
SAT Upholds Sebi Order Against Angel Broking By A Business Reporter
T
he Securities Appellate Tribunal (SAT) yesterday upheld Sebi’s order against Angel Broking in a case related to fraudulent trade practices in Sun Infoway shares. Earlier this year, Sebi had barred Angel Broking from taking up any new assignments for a period of two weeks after finding that the broker had executed trades on behalf its client in shares of Sun Infoway which were synchronised circular trades. Consequently, Angel Broking had approached the tribunal challenging Sebi’s order. In its order yesterday, SAT said it found “no merit in the appeal and accordingly “dismissed it. Angel’s argument that there existed nothing more than broker-client relationship
and that there is no material on record to show that it was connected with the group is “without any merit, it observed. MERE DOST PICTURE ABHI BAAKI HAI
Begins well & takes a dig at the Hindi Film Industry, bluntly. The Journey of its protagonist, Amar Joshi, played superbly by Sunil Shetty, is narrated fairly, as it offers some really funny moments. The Screenplay is humorous, but lacks sharpness in the Second-Hour. It definitely could've been tighter! Rajnish Raj Thakur's Direction is satisfactory. Cinematography is standard. Performance-Wise: Sunil Shetty delivers superbly as Amar Joshi. As the struggling protagonist, Shetty doesn't miss a beat & delivers in every sequence. Rajpal Yadav is crackling, yet again! Udita Goswami is ordinary. Om Puri & Rakesh Bedi are brilliant in supporting roles. Mumaith Khan suits the part well. Neena Gupta is perfect. Deepak Shirke, Avtar Gill, Suresh Menon & Razzak Khan are memorable in cameos. B4U, 9 p.m.

ALEX FERGUSON LIFTS LID ON BECKHAM, ROONEY & ENGLAND L

MUMBAI | WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 23, 2013
ONDON: Former Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson launched his new autobiography today, lifting the lid on his relationships with stars such as David Beckham, Cristiano Ronaldo, Roy Keane and Wayne Rooney. Ferguson said Beckham became too obsessed with fame in the latter years of his Old Trafford career and reiterated his claim that Rooney asked to leave the club at the end of last season. He confirmed that Keane, his long-serving captain, was asked to leave the club after lashing out at several of his younger team-mates in an interview with inhouse television channel MUTV that was never broadcast. He also revealed that he was twice offered the England manager’s job, in 1999 and 2001, but turned it down. “There was no way I could contemplate that. It wasn’t a bed of
nails I was ever tempted to lie on,” he said in ‘My Autobiography’. Ferguson, 71, stepped down as United manager in May after a record-breaking 26-and-a-half-year tenure in which he won 13 Premier League titles, two Champions League crowns, five FA Cups and four League Cups. The Scot developed a reputation for imposing unyielding discipline on the players in his squad and he was particularly forthright about several of the superstars he worked with. He described Beckham as “the only player I managed who chose to be famous, who made it his mission to be known outside the game”. Ferguson said he decided to sell Beckham to Real Madrid after an incident following an FA Cup loss at home to Arsenal in February 2003 when he accidentally kicked a boot into the midfielder’s face during a post-match argument. “The next day the story was in the press. In public an Alice band (worn by Beckham) highlighted the damage inflicted by the boot,” Ferguson
said. “It was in those days that I told the board David had to go. The minute a Manchester United player thought he was bigger than the manager, he had to go. That was the death knell for him.” Expanding on the story at a press conference in central London to mark the launch of the book, Ferguson said that Beckham’s focus shifted after he married the pop star Victoria Adams in 1999.“The big problem for me is that he fell in love with Victoria. That changed everything,” he said. Ferguson said that his relationship with Keane broke down irretrievably after the Irishman “slaughtered” players including Kieran Richardson, John O’Shea, Darren Fletcher and Rio Ferdinand in an MUTV interview in 2005. Ferguson described Ronaldo, who left United for Madrid in 2009, as “the most gifted player I managed” and said watching him play for the first time was “the biggest surge of excitement... I experienced in football management”.

Macau Open win a stepping stone to World No.1: Pallikal By Sabi Hussain
N
EW DELHI: Describing the title triumph at Macau Open as the “biggest win” of her career, India’s top squash player Dipika Pallikal today said it’s a stepping stone in her quest to be the world number one. Pallikal won the biggest title of her career at Macau this Sunday —the Women’s Squash Association (WSA) Silver band event — having beaten the formidable Grinham sisters — former world number two Natalie and former world number one Rachel.
“Yes for sure (the biggest win of my career). This is my first silver tournament win. So it does feel great. My aim is to get to world No.1 and this is just a route to No.1,” Pallikal told PTI in an e-mail interview from Shanghai where she would be playing in the USD 50,000 China Open. “It’s been my biggest win till date. I played some really good squash the entire week to win the tournament. My wins in the semis and finals were important. And when I got through to the finals, I knew I had an opportunity to win it and did not want to let it go,” she said.
Pallikal got the better of Rachel 12-10 5-11 11-7 11-9 in a hardfought summit clash that lasted 42 minutes while in the semi-final, she overcame a 2-1 deficit to stave off a stiff challenge from top seed Natalie 11-9 8-11 8-11 11-4 11-9 in a marathon 68-minute encounter. The 22-year-old from Chennai credited her success to sports psychologist Ken May and said the improvement in her game has come as a result of self confidence and mental toughness. “Ken May is an incredible guy. He trained Sarah and now he’s working with me.” Pallika went on to add.

World Boxing: Vikash, Sumit, Satish in quarters
A
LMATY (Kazakhstan): Indian boxers continued to touch new highs at the World Championships here as three of them entered the quarterfinals on an all-win day today to take the total number to an unprecedented five. Vikash Malik (60kg), Sumit Sangwan (81kg) and Satish Kumar (+91kg) joined Shiva Thapa (56kg) and Manoj Kumar (64kg) in the quarterfinals, making it one better than the previous best achieved in the 2011 edition in Azerbaijan. “It is a historic performance. I mean, we have won medals but as far as reaching this level is concerned, it is the first time that five Indians have made the quarterfinals,” an elated national coach Gurbax Singh Sandhu said. “We are getting standing ovations from fans here. It is very thrilling and something that makes you feel very proud,” he said. Vikash was the first Indian boxer to step into the ring today and was the underdog against fifth seed and former 2008 European Championships silvermedallist Miklos Varga. The Indian trailed by a couple of points in the opening round but made a stupendous recovery in the next two rounds, clinching them unanimously to emerge triumphant. Vikash has another tough bout at hand as he will be facing Brazil’s Robson Conceicao, a former Pan-American Games silver-medallist who has been seeded fourth here. “Vikash fought tempo-style in all the three rounds. He prefers to be aggressive and even though it was little even in the opening round, Vikash dominated the second and third round,” Sandhu said.“He mostly employed his straight punches and uppercuts to good effect. In fact, Vikash did not give any chance or time to the Hungarian boxer to regain his composure. It is a great win,” Sandhu said. Next in was Sumit and it never looked that he was facing an opponent more fancied than him. The 20-year-old Olympian handed out a thrashing to eighth seed Siarhei Novikau of Belarus in a lop-sided contest which the Indian claimed 3-0.

UMBAI: A US-based sports website has placed India’s prolific batsman Cheteshwar Pujara in its latest list of potentially good top ten investment options in sports, putting the Saurashtra player alongside the likes of Brazilian soccer star Neymar and Formula One ace Sebastian Vettel. Under the heading “The top 10 sports pro stock options,” website sportsonearth.Com has stated that with Indian cricket in a state of transition with the soon-to-be retirement of Sachin Tendulkar, the 25-year-old Pujara provides a good option for potential investors linking themselves to him. Players need to start playing on astroturf early: Ajit Pal
A
LIGARH: Former hockey Olympian and centre-half Ajit Pal Singh has said that if India wishes to restore its past glory in the sport then it would have to make youngsters play on astroturf from beginning of their career. “If talent has to be nurtured at the school and university level then it is necessary that the youngsters should be given the opportunity of playing on astroturf grounds at an early stage,” Singh said while addressing the inaugural ceremony of the All India Inter University Hockey Tournament (North Zone) last evening at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU). “If we are not able to provide astroturf to a youngsters then it would be unfair to expect them to turn out to be world beaters at a later stage,” he added. Singh lauded the efforts of the AMU and the Punjab University for nurturing hockey talent in the past. He said that both the universities has served as a cradle for nurturing hockey talent in the country. He said these were the only two universities in the country which have the facility of astroturf hockey fields and could now play a vital role producing hockey champions. “If we wish to rise in world hockey then merely appointing foreign coaches is not going to be enough,” Singh went on to add. He said that he was ready to help AMU in establishing a hockey academy as mooted earlier by the Vice-Chancellor Lt Gen (retd) Zameer Uddin Shah.
comes to endorsements. Cheteshwar Pujara is already considered the game’s next top batsman, and at 25 he is only getting better. The man who took Rahul Dravid’s number three spot in the Indian order has already surpassed 200 runs in a single atbat (baseball term) eight times in top-flight play, and soared over 300 thrice, an extraordinary feat (even if you don’t know Test cricket from Jiminy Cricket). “And Pujara has yet to fully impact the T20 game, the shorter version of cricket that has exploded on the Indian scene. Provided he stays fit (and Pujara has been injury prone thus far), he could well become the next captain of the national team before he hits thirty,” notes Weintraub.
and ‘The House That Ruth Built’ and a regular writer for The New York Times and ESPN.Com, has highlighted Pujara’s penchant for big scores and placed him 8th in his top ten pro sports stock options list headed by 21-year-old Neymar. “Indian cricket is in a state of transition, with the Michael Jordan of the sport, Sachin Tendulkar, retiring from competition, and the stalwart captain (and extremely well compensated) Mahendra Singh Dhoni about to turn 33,” writes Weinstraub. “The canny investor will put his money into the future of the next India captain, who stands to make a modest income on the field (Dhoni clears about USD 3.5 million), but rake it in when it

BCCI gives go ahead to SA tour after CSA snubs Lorgat
N
EW DELHI, Oct 22 (PTI) Putting an end to weeks of speculation, the BCCI today gave its consent to India’s tour of South Africa after Cricket South Africa withdrew its CEO Haroon Lorgat from not just its dealings with the Indian Board but also the ICC Chief Executives Committee pending an enquiry into his actions. “Following meetings in London over the past couple of days, CSA and the BCCI have today announced that the South Africa cricket team will play against India in an upcoming home series comprising of two Test matches and three One Day International matches, the specific dates and details of which will be announced in due course,” the BCCI and Cricket South Africa (CSA) noted together in a joint statement. “In addition, both parties have also agreed to continue with good faith discussions between their respective Presidents about the possibility of agreeing further bilateral arrangements in respect
of the scheduled fixtures between the two teams, and taking into account any scheduling imbalances from previous years.” The tour that had been in limbo ever since July after CSA unilaterally released its itinerary, a move which miffed the BCCI. The Indian Board was also not too happy with Lorgat’s appointment as CEO. The BCCI’s uneasiness with Lorgat stemmed from the somewhat frosty relationship that the BCCI shared with him during his stint as the ICC CEO due to their differences over a number of issues. Matters came to a head recently when CSA’s former legal adviser David Becker, allegedly at the behest of Lorgat, accused BCCI President N Srinivasan of being manipulative. The BCCI-CSA statement said the ICC has now decided to investigate the matter, including Lorgat’s reported role, even though Becker has maintained that the views expressed were completely his own.
“It’s going to be a big rally and Poonia’s joining the party is expected to be announced there,” a source in the know of the development said. Sources close to Poonia said she will not end her track and field career even if she is elected in the polls as she has firmly set her eyes on winning a gold medal in the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games next year. It is learnt that Poonia is likely to fight the Assembly elections in one of the six constituencies in Churu district as she has a following among the people there. She has been working for social causes in the state for some time. After she won a gold medal in discus throw at the 2010 Commonwealth Games here, Poonia was roped in as the brand ambassador by Rajasthan state Health Ministry though she quit from that position a few days back in view of her joining politics. —PTI

NEW DELHI: Livid with the suspended Indian Boxing Federation’s antics, International Boxing Association (AIBA) President Ching Kuo-Wu has said the world body will now work with the IOA to “get to a position where it will be possible to hold new elections” for the IBF. In a sternly-worded missive after receiving information about the suspended IBF’s plan to hold an Annual General Meeting on November 9, Wu has stated that the IBF “does not have any validly appointed officers” at the moment. “Since the September 2012 IABF AGM and Elections, AIBA has worked to try and find a way forward for boxing in India. The process has become increasingly difficult due to the opposing positions adopted by various factions within the IABF,” Wu said in a letter, which has, among others, also been addressed to India’s representative in the AIBA Executive Committee member Kishen Narsi.
Rain forces early stumps after Shakib Hasan strikes
DHAKA: Shakib Al Hasan claimed three wickets as Bangladesh reduced New Zealand to 107-3 today before rain forced an early close on the second day of the second Test in Dhaka. A downpour led the umpires to suspend and then call off play after an early tea break with the game evenly poised. New Zealand had dismissed the hosts for 282 early in the morning thanks to Neil Wagner’s maiden five-wicket haul, but Bangladesh struck back through Shakib. He took two wickets in his first two overs, with New Zealand in trouble at 32-2 at lunch before Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor rebuilt. Williamson had to leave the field after Rubel Hossain struck him with a bouncer, but he returned soon afterwards.
Sethi may have to resign following court’s order
Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar poses during an event at Nariman Point in Mumbai on Tuesday.
LAHORE: With Islamabad High Court setting stringent rules for new PCB Chairman candidates, head of the ad hoc committee Najam Sethi may have to resign from his post as he fails to fit into the new eligibility criteria. The IHC judge, while announcing new polls date of November 2, ruled yesterday that the candidates should be graduates, must have played Test or Firstclass cricket and headed a regional cricket association, making Sethi ineligible to contest for the post of PCB chairman. “Apparently Mr Sethi has no option but to follow the court’s direction to hold the election to choose new regular PCB chairman.” he said.

UMBAI: There is a huge demand for tickets from fans across the world, including US, to watch Sachin Tendulkar’s 200th and farewell Test at the Wankhede Stadium here next month leading to a tricky situation to accommodate all, said Mumbai Cricket Association chief Sharad Pawar today. “People from all the Test playing countries as well as America are demanding tickets to see the Test match. But we have prior commitments to several organisations including the BCCI (Indian cricket board), our own clubs, government authorities etc, so we cannot say how many will be available for the public,” said Pawar at a media conference here. The MCA chief, however, denied news reports that Tendulkar had demanded 2000 tickets for the

that we will give him 500 tickets,” said Pawar. The former BCCI president said that to mark the occasion MCA
was planning quite a few measures like printing the tickets with Tendulkar’s photo on both sides, coming out with a souvenir dedicated to the champion batsman etc. “We have also got an offer from a publication in Nagpur for printing a book containing 150-160 pages filled with details of all statistics of matches played by Tendulkar,” said Pawar. When a question was put to him about allowing Shah Rukh Khan to watch the game, Pawar played safe and said all those people who have not been stopped from entering the MCA’s premises can come and witness the Test match. The Bollywood actor was banned by MCA for five years from entering theWankhede Stadium for creating a ruckus during an IPL game in 2012 by the previous regime.
HOPAL: Former India pace bowler Chetan Sharma has said that no one can fit into the big shoes of champion batsman Sachin Tendulkar in Test cricket. Tendulkar’s absence would be felt from the Test team as no player has the ability to win a match like him, Sharma told reporters here last evening during a short visit. Tendulkar’s 200th Test against the West Indies in November going to be his last game. “This is a big achievement for any player,” Sharma said.Sharma said that pacer Ishant Sharma, who bowled badly in the last one-day match against Australia, was lucky to have been retained in the team. A hugely costly over by the out-ofform pacer, who gave away 30 runs in the 48th over, had turned the tide in Australia’s favour after the Indians seemed cruising in the third one-day international match at Mohali on October 19.

to be honoured by Mumbai Cricket Association on November 11 by naming its newly built suburban Kandivli clubhouse after the champion cricketer who is to retire from the game at the conclusion of the second India-West Indies Test match, his 200th, on November 18. “We have decided to name our clubhouse at Kandivli after Sachin Tendulkar and the unveiling function would be held there on November 11 in the presence of both the teams West Indies and India,” said newly elected MCA chief Sharad Pawar at a media conference today. The first Test of the India-West Indies series is to be played from November 6-10 at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata while the second and final game, which would also mark the end of Tendulkar’s glittering career, will be held at the Wankhede Stadium from November 14-18. “Both India and West Indies teams would come to our Kandivli facility direct after landing in Mumbai from Kolkata to be present for the felicitation function and then go to their hotel. We want to hold it on a grand scale,” Pawar said. Pawar also said that this was the only official felicitation function that is planned by Tendulkar’s parent association to mark his departure from the game. Among the functionaries attending it would be current Cricket Board president N Srinvasan and the other office bearers of BCCI. “This is the official felicitation function of Sachin Tendulkar by MCA. BCCI president N Srinivasan has accepted our invitation in principle to be present along with several other dignitaries, including the Maharashtra CM (Prithviraj Chavan),” Pawar said.
under pressure to bounce back when they take on Australia in the fourth ODI here today, hoping to tide over their death bowling miseries. Trailing 1-2 after the loss in the third ODI in Mohali, India who retained the same eleven in the first three matches may be forced to tinker with the bowling line-up which has failed to live up to expectations. Defending a huge target of 304, India were on course for a comfortable win in the third one-dayer at Mohali with 44 needed from the last three overs, but a wayward Ishant leaked 30 runs in the 48th overs with James Faulkner smashing four sixes and two fours to turn the match in Australia’s favour. Introduction of two new balls, coupled with change in field restriction with fielders in the deep being reduced to four from five, has hit the Indian camp as the pacers are struggling
ALL HEADS TO THE PUMP: The entire Indian squad gatgher as one ahead of the fourth ODI against Australia. to cope up with the alteration of rules. Known for their lack of pace and swing, Indian pacers rely more on reverse swing on the flat pitches after the ball becomes old but the new rule has unsettled the hosts badly. While batsmen have been in top form, it’s the bowlers who have con-
ceded 300-plus runs in all the three ODIs with poor spells in the death overs, something that would be the team management’s main concern. Ishant and R Vinay Kumar have been expensive with both conceding seven-plus runs per over but the latter has been at least among wickets
Hope Ishant would be strong in his mindset: Raina R
ANCHI: Despite the criticism and call for Ishant Sharma’s ouster for conceding 30 runs in an over, teammate Suresh Raina today dropped hints that the beleaguered pacer could be retained in the fourth ODI against Australia at the JSCA Stadium here tomorrow. Raina said Ishant had worked really hard in the last couple of days to overcome the disastrous 48th over in Mohali that cost India the third one-dayer as Aussies took a 2-1 lead. “I hope Ishant would be strong in his mindset and approach the match in a positive manner. He has really worked hard in the last two days,” Raina told reporters today. “Our bowlers are doing well. Our think tank is strong and have good planning. Bowlers are training hard for last two days. The harder they work the better they would perform. Hopefully we will do really well against the Aussies tomorrow,” he said.
Admitting that adjusting to the new ODI rules was proving difficult for the bowlers, he said: “We are not getting the ball to reverse, while spinners are also not getting turns as with two balls it do not get old. But we have no excuse. We have to do well under the circumstances. “We have to admit that it’s tough for the bowlers. When five players are inside (the circle), it’s obviously going to be difficult for the parttimers as your regular bowlers are not doing well. “Bowlers come under pressure as to what line and length they would have to try when five players are inside. You’re allowed to bowl two bouncers but then you have to bowl four more balls after that.” Raina however said they would have to live up to the challenge laid out by the ICC. “No complains, as we have to play under the ICC Playing Conditions. Players will have to do their job.”
Asked whether 15-20 runs per over had become a norm, he said: “The players are used to the Indian bowlers after six IPLs. There’s positive as well as negative aspect to it. There is more pressure on the bowlers nowadays.” Despite trailing the series 1-2, Raina said India were not under any pressure. “We won the first match in the Pune T20. Then they won and we did in the next. It’s been a good contest so far. Our batting is clicking and sometimes bowling. The team who play well on that given day would win. It’s about your aura in the field and the mental toughness.” He further said their seven-wicket win against England in the last match on January 19 would inspire them to do well here. “We have done well against England in the last match here. Definitely we would try to do well here. Just hope that it will be our day tomorrow.”
and that might go in his favour. At 5.37, the third pacer, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, has been ‘economical’. After the disgraceful 48th over in Mohali, Ishant may not retain his place in the team and could be replaced by left-arm medium pacer Jayadev Unadkat. —PTI
