here are 209 Urdu medium schools with 1,03,093 students and 2,857 teachers in Mumbai. But the future of all the students is at stake as their teachers are allegedly not very capable and the way they talk is not understood by the students. The Vulture Action Plan 2006 of Ministry of Environment and Forest, Government of India and South Asian Vulture Recovery Plan 2004, recommended a complete ban on the use of diclofenac (a drug that is fatal for vultures) for veterinary purposes. Even if a vulture feeds just once on a diclofenac laced carcass, it dies. Another area of focus was the identification of vulture safe drugs and establishment of Vulture Conservation Breeding Programme to save vultures from extinction. Today, though attempts

he Election Commission of India's attempts to include marginalised sections of the society like Transgenders seems to have hit a road block. Under its flagship programme of Systematic Voters Education And Electoral Participation (SVEEP) the ECI has been making efforts over the past several years to ensure enrollment of transgenders into the voter list. Now even the adult orphans are bitterly complaining that they are finding it difficult to enroll themselves as voters. At the heart of the matter for both the transgenders and the orphans is the insistence of the ECI to submit proofs of their residence. In a bid to give them the status of the voter, the ECI incorporated the column of 'Others' category in voter registration Form 6. However, despite this in January this year the ECI could only manage to enroll 30 transgenders in Nalasopara, Thane district. According to Urmi Jadhav of Humsafar Trust, the transgender community lives mostly in slums and is scattered all over Mumbai. The transgenders live in slum dwellings whose real ownership belongs to their Guru’s. The biggest problem for the transgender community is that in most cases their

initiative. Another problem that the transgender community is apprehensive about is the possible misuse of the registration facility by others who might fraudulently claim to be transgenders. The problem for the transgender community has been further compounded by the fact that the court has refused to revoke the contentious section 377 of the Indian Penal Code. The transgender community in Mumbai is around 5,000 to 10,000 and is spread in localities like Kamathipura, Vikhroli, MaladGuru’s are not willing to part-take with the agreement copy or deposit receipts out of the fear that it might be misused by their 'chelas' who they also suspect of possibly rebelling against them, added Jadhav. Speaking to ADC on condition of anonymity an ECI official admitted to the problems faced by transgenders in furnishing proof of residence. He added that the Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) needs to have some documentary proof of residence so as to enable registration of voters in 'Others' category. Commenting upon the recent conclave in which the state government agreed to look into the community demands, Jadhav stated that it was the result of the community own

Sadly, even the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act of 2000 and its amendment in 2006 are silent on this specific problem that these children face when they grow up. However, there is good news round the corner for these orphan children according to Advocate Rajendra Anbhule who has filed a writ petition in the Supreme Court of India over this specific problem. According to Anbhule the state government in an affidavit filed before the apex court stating that it will provide government documents like ration cards, passport, PAN Card and other government documents. Chinmay Bhandari who works for NGO Citizens for Accountability in Governance (CAG) amongst orphan children in Pune disclosed that when police pick these young orphans they keep the 'Nationality' column blank. Later on as they grow up and leave the care of the orphanages they find it extremely difficult to get official documents like ration cards, passport, PAN cards and other such documents. A Government Resolution (GR) of July 2012 does guarantee them 1 percent reservation in employment and a certificate declaring their status as orphans”. Aditya Charegaonkar, himself an

orphan from Pune now works as programme coordinator for Pratham Infotech admitted to the problem being faced by orphans like him. He pointed out that the Juvenile Justice Act is silent on this issue. Beyond offering some vocational courses for adult orphans who leave the care of orphanages, there is no help from the government. For all government documents you need proofs of residence and nationality. Since most of the adult orphans live in rented accommodations, they do not have permanent addresses. Besides this the owners of the accommodation also seldom provide address proof. On the similar problem faced by orphans, the ECI official again pleaded helplessness pointing to the provisions in the electoral laws that demand submission of residential proof. He pointed out that in the past there have been court cases over the issue alleging that illegal Bangladeshi immigrants getting enrolled as voters, hence we seek proofs of residence. Ironically enough at present the destitute people are enrolled as voters after the Booth Level Officer (BLO) who thrice verifies the place of their usual residence before including their names in the voter list.

However, the residents now are demanding that the BMC should expedite the paper work in the cancellation of the approvals for the swimming pool. “In 2004, local politician Vinod Shekhar came up with the plan for a BMC swimming pool on this ground but this was quashed due to protest by the locals. Since then, this plan is being brought up time and again by him and the last

time a big protest was made by local schools and residents in 2011 at the Azad Maidan. While Shekhar had assured all that he would not go ahead with his plan unless he had the full backing of the people, he has now managed to convince the BMC to get a plan approved for this pool. According to this plan, the existing gym will be demolished even though it is fully operational and in use. In addition to a swimming pool, a car park will be made which will make further in-roads into the ground. This open playground is used extensively by school children of Campion, St Annes, St Joesph, Holy Name from where Shekhar himself has completed his schooling, the Colaba Municipal School and thousands of Colaba residents and local football players. n an interesting development in the Adarsh housing scam case, the division bench of the Bombay High Court, on Thursday, recused itself from hearing a petition which sought a direction to CBI to make former Maharashtra minister Shivajirao Patil-Nilangekar as an accused in the case of alleged benami transactions in Adarsh Housing Society. This came as the bench of Justice N. H. Patil and Justice V. L. Achiliya were about to hear a petition filed by activist Praveen Wategaonkar which

had come up for hearing. Justice Achiliya said told the petitioner that he was the Secretary of Law and Judiciary before becoming a judge of the High Court, and in that capacity had dealt with the files of Adarsh Society. Hence, it would not be proper for this bench to hear the matter. The petition had alleged that the minister Patil, during his tenure as state revenue minister, had granted certain approvals to the society illegally. “In fact, in return, his son-inlaw was allotted a flat in the plush high-rise building in south Mumbai. Wategaonkar alleged that CBI was sup-

pressing certain facts from the court regarding Patil-Nilangekar, who was also the chief minister of Maharashtra earlier. The state government has partly accepted the findings submitted by a judicial inquiry commission which probed into the Adarsh case and hence CBI should also be directed to look into the findings. The commission, in its report, has named several bureaucrats and ministers for alleged favouritism towards the society. he Economic Offenses Wing (EOW) of Mumbai’s crime branch on Thursday arrested a builder/developer for cheating people by falsely selling 19 flats. The accused, identified as Nitin Mehta, is the first person to be arrested in the cheating case, confirmed Addl. CP (EOW) Rajvardhan Sinha. Speaking to the ADC, Sinha said, “Yesterday police arrested the accused in the case and more arrests are likely in future.” According to the police, the accused cheated seven people by giving the allotment letter of 19 flats. In return, Mehta took almost 75 per cent to 80 per cent costs of the flats from the victims, said the investiga-

tors. However, the accused from more than one decade did not fulfill the promises, which he had made to the victims, added police. In this regard, the accused also violated the Maharashtra Ownership of Flats (MOF) Act, in which the builder or the developer has to give the possession of the flat by the mentioned time in the allotment letter or the agreement. In 1995, Mehta, builder/developer of Anamika Real Turf Pvt Ltd, had started the construction of a building on a private land in Borivali (E), said police. As the years passed on, the prospective buyers purchased the flats from Mehta but did not get the flats till today, informed police.

Considering this, the victims approached the EOW and on July 31, 2013 a case of cheating and criminal breach of trust was lodged against Mehta and the concerned people who cheated the victims. The total cost of the 19 flats is approximately Rs.1.5 crore, said police explaining that the cost of the flats in the late 90s were quite low in comparison with today’s real estate scenario. Meanwhile, the accused would be produced in the court on Friday and the EOW would seek his further custody. ONSTROUS happenings in our country make us wonder whether India has emerged at all from the Dark Ages. The government sits back and proudly claims that it keeps taking steps to strengthen democracy in the country. One of them is the creation of panchayats and giving it maximum possible powers for governance. We have panchayats in all the states. The panchayats apart from other work, is giving assistance to the police in ensuring law and order in the villages. There is evidence to believe that there is no democracy in the way the panchayats are functioning. Actually they have become autocratic institutions. The pramukh (big chief) gives orders and the poor people have no choice but obey. He has become lord and master in the village scenario. And they hold trials and pass verdicts which cannot be questioned. A girl who had an affair in a village was put on trial and the panchayat pramukh passed a most horrible judgement: He ordered that for the crime she has committed, she should be raped. As many as 13 men were selected and asked to rape the hapless girl. All the 13 rapists have been booked. The main culprit, the panchayat pramukh, is in police custody as well. The gruesome incident makes one wonder whether it is desirable to give powers to the panchayat. The horrible incident shows that it is necessary to cut down the powers of the panchayat. The pramukhs must be placed under the control of some other authority. What is also necessary is that a study has to be conducted how the panchayats are functioning across the country. Are the pramukhs ensuring that the villagers are free and not persecuted by the pramukhs. Panchayats are empowered to ensure that people in rural regions are not exploited and harassed. In reality, a pramukh, however, throws democracy to the windows and functions like a dictator.

T the fag-end of the 2013, many journalists were filing their stories and essays on 'Importance of being Arvind Kejriwal'. Now the same bunch of journalists, political thinkers and analysts are contemplating to write 'Nuisance of being Arvind Kejriwal'. Strangely the backdrop of both the stories remain same. However, after three weeks, the situation has changed drastically and thus the entire screenplay has taken a Uturn, in which heroes of last year have taken the role of villains. As 2013 folded, a new star emerged on the legislative horizon of the nation. A 45-yearold former babu, Arvind Kejriwal took the nation by shock and grabbed the power of the capital state of Delhi. His year-old political outfit Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) shook the political system and emerged as the second largest legislative group, only after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). More surprisingly, the Congress that enjoyed unabated rule of 15 years, was reduced to a meagre third and of no serious consequence. In the situation of having a hung Assembly, the natural option was that the largest group, though in minority forms a government. However, the BJP decided not to play the gamble and thus, AAP was the second option. Congress being the most shrewd political force, unilaterally declared 'unconditional outside support' to AAP government. Had Kejriwal too had rejected the offer, the Lt. Governor Najeeb Jung, would have been forced to either keep the House in suspended animation or dissolve the Assembly and call for free elections. Here, Kejriwal decided to take the chance and form the government with all fanfare. However, hoping that the Congress would pull the rug under their feet and defeat the government sooner than later. This would have given Kejriwal the natural advantage of being under-dogs.

Inexperienced people This was the beginning of Kejriwal's slide. The inexperienced people in the new government started goofing up from 'Day 2'. They came for the swearing-in function and later on the first day of the new Assembly with white caps displaying the name of their party, which is clearly against the norms and practices of the Parliamentary system. This 'error' was gracefully ignored by the media. But this was not enough. The next day, the loud-mouth Law Minister Somnath Bharti stirred the hornets' nest by ordering his office to summon judges of Delhi court for a meeting in his office. Though being a law graduate and a practicing lawyer, little did Bharti knew that a meeting of judges can be convened only by the Chief Justice and not by anyone in the government. This was also pardoned. However, Bharti was not in a mood to go slow. He, perhaps, took his job of being a people's representative a lawmaker too seriously and took up night vigil in his area along with party activists and police. As he had the 'information' that drug and prostitution joint was run in one of the buildings, he ordered the accompanying police officer to conduct search of the house. As there was no search warrant, the police officer refused to oblige. The ugly scene that took place on the road in mid-night was captured by cameras and was seen by millions of TV viewers for the next couple of days. Ideally, Bharti should have expressed apology and kept quiet. However, he went after

As the Home Ministry is housed in front of Prime Minister's office and the Rashtrapati Bhavan, it was predictable that Kejriwal and his men would not have been allowed to march on the Raj Path and near the famous Vijay Chowk. As the bandwagon was stopped near the Rail Bhavan, half a kilometre away from North Bloc, Kejriwal put up a drama and began his 'Dharna' on the street blocking the roads leading to Parliament, Sena Bhavan, Rail Bhavan, Udyog Bhavan and Kendriya Sachivalaya, apart from at least four busy metro stations. Obviously, the AAP leader was expecting use of police force to disperse them that would have come handy for him to spread the influence of his party. The Centre on the other hand, decided to 'wait and watch'. Delhi experienced chilled winter and showers that night. This natural calamity reduced the mob drastically on the morning of the second day as not many Delhiites were as enthusiastic to dare the chilled weather. Had the Lt. Governor waited for a few hours more, the 'Dharna' would have fizzled out on its own? But for some strange reason, against the will of the party high command, Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde sent an amicable settlement formula to Kejriwal that he grabbed with both hands and withdrew the agitation, calling it 'victory'. The agitation that began with a demand of handing over the police department to the Delhi government and suspension of five so-called 'erring' policemen, ended with a forced leave to two policemen. Now the question arises, is Kejriwal serious in running the government with the 'support' of Congress, or he is expecting that the Congress at some point would pull it down. Actually, AAP and Congress are strange bed-fellows and no theory of political science can envisage a situation where the two prime arch rivals in the election campaign, come together to form the government and to keep the largest single group out on the Opposition benches. However, Congress has perhaps decided to continue with this strange partner-

ship only with a single objective of keeping the BJP at bay. Here, the Congress has two-edged advantage; it can keep bitterly criticizing the government as it is not a part of the government and secondly, this can deprive the main Opposition party -- BJP – from ruling the capital state at the time of national elections.

Sights set on Lok Sabha On the other hand, Kejriwal, after winning sizable success in Delhi, has now set his sight on the national elections, as he and his colleagues have national ambitions. Therefore, he would like to remain in the saddle for a couple of more months and force the Congress to get out of the alliance. That would result in fall of the government and Kejriwal can ride on the sympathy wave. However, to running of the government with all fat and unrealistic promises that the AAP had pronounced during the campaign, seems to be becoming more and more difficult with every day passing. Now, sooner than later, AAP will have to bring and pass the much-talked-about Jan Lokpal Bill. With only 28 members in the 70-member House, will he be able to take the controversial bill through? What happens to his announcement to take major decisions in 'Jan Sabha'? Will he be able to convene Jan Sabha at Ramlila Maidan of Delhi to pass the bill? Will he convene Jan Sabha to decide the fate of Bharti? Though AAP is a political party, in actual terms, it’s a one-man army and it is only Arvind Kejriwal who matters for the party and the people. Will he be able to run for national future with very little ground work and a force of over enthusiastic and inexperienced workers? The social media and electronic media did play a vital role in Kejriwal's success. Will he be able to continue his sway over the media and the next six months also? The success of Kejriwal would depend on his stamina to run a marathon, as what he is running is not a 100-metre race. Hope, Kejriwal and his men are aware of these bitter truth. The Indian Railways are equipped with the barest minimum facilities and its standards are deteriorating. The question of cleanliness does not arise. The number of trains is not at all adequate in any part of India and the fact that there are still single tracks in many parts including on the trunk route of Mumbai-Chennai speaks volumes about the negligence. Corruption is mounting day-byday. It is, therefore, imperative that the Railways should take their responsibilities seriously and make a comprehensive study and gauge the effect to meticulously raise the levels of the platforms. The caves are divided into two sections, the larger Hindu section and the smaller Buddhist section. The Hindu section houses rock cut stone sculptures, representing the Shaiva Hindu sect, dedicated to God Shiva. The caves date as far back as the 5th century and it is sad that the identities of the craftsmen behind this marvel are still unknown. Head here for a day trip to steep yourself in culture. With a quaint charm and delicious food, Rhea Dhanbhoora sees how Nico Bombay fares in Kala Ghoda which is already peppered with great restaurants

ombay seems to have a new obsession with the Jazz Age, what with 20s movies, jazz festivals and a sudden foray of jazz bar-esque restaurants in the city. Nico Bombay is the latest entrant, complete with warm lights, low slung chairs (very uncomfortable for shorter people), bar stools, pretty candles and suited up staff. It’s chic and modern with a heady antique vibe and the menu, though just a single page, looks appetising. Ladies, head to Nico before 8pm and you’ll be served a glass of wine in a crystal wine glass. There’s also a chance you’ll run into Nico, enjoying a meal with his friendly family and playful son, all contributing to a bubbly restaurant feel, complete with the chatter of a crowd, glasses clinking and knives scraping.

GET YOUR GOAT ON: If you’re a fan of goat cheese, you should try the first two dishes that we did. First was a highly recommended Goat Cheese, Caramelised Onion, Sour Cream Puff (`325). The buttery puff was deliciously chewy and the tomato sauce had a delectable tang. The messy Pulled Goat Meat, Red Onion, Micro Greens (`275) will remind you of mini falafels, with delicious, tender pulled goat served in little pita pockets. Prawn lovers will appreciate the Kadaifi Wrapped Prawns, Citrus Mousseline (`450). These are huge prawns, wrapped in a crispy, shredded phyllo pastry, accompanied by a delightful mixture of egg, butter, lemon and cream. The health conscious must not miss out on the Balsamic Baby Beets, Caramelised Walnuts, Burrata (`350). The beetroot was tender but crunchy and the walnuts add a much-needed crunch. The best part about this is that the original Italian burrata (mozzarella and cream cheese) is made locally,

especially for the restaurant, making the yummy soft centered cheese even more impressive. The Wild Arugula, Baby Artichokes, Pomegranate Vinaigrette, Parmesan Shavings Salad (`365) was also delicious, but the vinaigrette can be a bit much for those who prefer a lighter dressing. PIZZA PERFECT: We’d heard a lot about their Neopolitan Flat Breads and the base of the pizzas did not disappoint us. The Gorus (`645) was well-flavoured, though the bitter honey will not sit well with anyone who doesn’t like honey in their meals. The Ajijul’s Duck (`925) was our favourite — duck drizzled with oil and yummy cheese. Don’t miss out on the Beef Fillet, Pomme Purée, Baby Carrots, Pearl Onions (`600). The slow cooked beef is tender, delightfully pink on the inside and served with pomme purée (waxy potato mash that’s thick and smooth on your tongue) instead of the usual mash. DREAMY DESSERTS: After such lovely food, we weren’t sure if any run-off-the-mill desserts could wow us, but we were proved wrong when we sampled the Chocolate Fondant, Strawberry Granita (`450). The chocolate fondant was expectantly tasty, but the strawberry granita took our breath away! The semi-frozen dessert tasted like a field of fresh strawberries and was so refreshing that we polished it off, edible bowl included! Although Nico Bombay isn’t spectacularly different, it’s a great place for a couple of drinks (they have a range of fun cocktails) and unquestionably good food made with fresh ingredients.

e Said She Said. But why not She Said He Said? That’s because the pickup line is mostly dropped by a man at a bar, so placing ‘him’ first and then ‘her’ seemed logical. Or at least to me. However, my complex back-story was ruined by Harshvardan Samor, one of the three owners, when he said that this shot bar was supposed to be a café meant for conversations, thus, He Said She Said. Why a shot bar then? The loop of this question ties back to Harsh visiting New York and realising that the most raucous but unadulterated fun takes place at shot bars. Delhi’s shot bar He Said She Said opened its doors in Mumbai in the form of a large alfresco section and a relatively constricted inner quarter. We loved the spacious open-air area with two bars and décor dominated by white seating arrangements (high rise chairs and tables, park benches) and colourful upholstery. Most park benches come with a speech bubble that can be written upon — a unique and apt addition to the bar. Early evening, there’s soft rock/pop music playing in the background, trying not to disturb you, the volume of which steadily increases with the ink in the skies as it takes a turn towards EDM. Specially curated for He Said She Said, the alcohol menu quite obviously has an extensive list of shots divided in eight categories: Layered, Chocolatey/Creamy, Fruity, Spicy, Balls of Steel, Its Different, Ice-cream shots and Mumbai Special. We tried six shots in all. The first two were from the Mumbai Special section and are called Maja Ma Che (`120), which is vodka with strawberry syrup and Cha Maila (`150), a combination of caramel and whiskey. While we could hardly taste the strawberry syrup, Maja Ma Che proved to be a potent shot, going quite well with its name. However, Cha Maila was a little too sweet for us. Coco Chanel (`199, Chocolatey section) has a delectable pairing of dark rum with chocolate, accompanied with a stick of Kit Kat. Melon Water (`149, Fruity section) was a refreshing shot that included vodka and watermelon juice. We also braced ourselves to sample two items from the Spicy section — Aam Panna (`149) and Red Hot Chilli Pepper (`199). Aam Panna is a vodka based shot with masala and a hint of mango (a slice of raw mango to go with it

would have been nice). But, our favourite was the Red Hot Chilli Pepper — green chillies muddled with sugar and pepper vodka — spicy, sour and so much fun! Most shots come with a piece of fruit or something which acts as a palate cleanser, making things even better. Finger food dominates the multi-cuisine menu and we ordered for Pepper & Olive Cheesy Parcels (`300), Lemon Chilli Meatballs (`255) and Murgh Malai Tikka (`204). Though disappointed by the quantity (two pieces), these little parcels of deliciousness, stuffed with cream cheese and topped by tomato and balsamic sauce, will make you order a second one (we did!). The meatballs were spicy as promised and well-cooked — we’d say, wash down the spiciness with a Melon Water shot! The Tikka was a bland for me, but my companion enjoyed every bit of the soft chunks. There will also be a fine dine/studio (where still shoots will be arranged) opening on the first floor by the end of this month. When you come for a regular drink here, don’t forget to sample their shots, which are undoubtedly the highlight of this bar and are priced reasonably, starting at just `120. With its warm ambience and youthful vibe, He Said She Said can indeed be an ideal hotspot for your shot induced drunken conversations. NSE India: CNX Nifty — Daily Market Report for: Friday (January 24, 2014) (Based on the activity of the previous trading day) by Dominic Rebello REVIEW OF THE PREVIOUS DAY: The Nifty rose marginally on Thursday (January 23, 2014) a net 6.70 points (0.11%) and closed at the 6345 point level. The market opened down with a gap at the 6325 points level. It then declined further and registered the day’s low at the 6316 points level at 9.16 a.m. The index then rose and turned into a range bound movement until 1.55 p.m. It then rose sharply on positive European market cues and registered the day’s high at the 6355 points level at 2.25 p.m. The index then declined and turned into a range bound movement until closing at the day. The Nifty moved in a range of 39 points and closed above the psychologically important 6300 points level for the fourth consecutive session. Sentiment was mixed and amongst the 50 Nifty stocks 25 were gainers, while the other 25 closed in the red. Substantial buying was seen in consumer durables and capital goods stocks, while substantial selling was seen in auto stocks.

Ashok Leyland (ALL) has reported dismal performance in Q3FY14 mainly due to 27% YoY plunge in M&HCV volume that dragged its EBIDTA margin by 926 bps YoY & 717 bps QoQ and turned negative to -5% (vs. our estimate of -1.1%). Discount on trucks – at historically high – is the prime reason for deterioration in profit. Its revenues dipped 19% YoY & 23.4% QoQ to Rs. 19.5 bn. Its raw material/sales ratio grew 862 bps YoY & 339 bps QoQ to 79.7%, while its other expenses/sales ratio rose by 149 bps QoQ (down 75 bps YoY) to 13%, due to low volume. Higher working capital and rising cost of debt resulted in high interest outflow. ALL has posted Rs. 1.67 bn net loss – including Rs. 256 mn tax credit, VRS expense of Rs. 436 mn and net exceptional gain of Rs. 1.35 bn on sale of assets/investments – excluding which, its adjusted net loss stood at ~Rs. 2.85 bn vs. Rs. 1.35 bn net loss in Q2FY14 & Rs. 847 mn net loss in Q3FY13. Its adjusted EPS stood at Rs. (1.07) in Q3FY14. The Company’s inventory has begun correcting and its cash-flow started improving on account of gain from sell of long-term investment and capex tightening. Despite ongoing slowdown in South, ALL managed to increase its market share in M&HCV trucks by 150 bps YoY to 20.5%. Its debt dipped to Rs. 54 bn from its peak level of Rs. 61.6 bn in Aug’13. Its capex tightening strategy and focus on divesting un-related investment would lower its debt burden and interest outgo, going forward, which may provide partial relief to stretched balance sheet. We expect healthy volumes owing to success of its new launches in LCVs & ICVs and pan-India launch, going forward. Outlook & Valuation: As we expect slowdown to continue in Q4FY14E and strong recovery in FY15E, we lower our FY14E estimates and maintain our volume, revenues and EPS estimates intact for FY15E. Currently, the stock trades at P/E of 6.4xFY15E. On account of valuation comfort and likely CV upcycle in FY15E, we reiterate our “BUY” recommendation on ALL, and maintain target price of Rs. 21 per share, valuing the stock at 8xFY15E EPS. Volume & Market Share: ALL reported total volume of 18,453 units, down 18.8% YoY & 23.4% QoQ in Q3FY14 mainly due to decline in M&HCV segment by 27% YoY to 10,698 units. However, its volume in LCV segment dipped by 11% YoY. Its domestic M&HCV volume dipped 30.8% YoY to 8,979 units vs. industry decline of 31.1% YoY. Its truck volume dipped 26% YoY to 6,857 units, while bus volume fell 43% YoY to 2,122 units.

Emami’s Q3FY14 net sales/EBITDA/adj. PAT grew by 6.6%/29.1%/30.4%, with topline growth moderating due to a delayed winter and weak CSD sales. However, margins saw a strong 525bps expansion on lower mentha prices and a cut in A&P spends. Amid a weak macro, we remain concerned on the company’s slower topline growth, and believe any stock out performance hinges upon a revival in growth rates. Maintain HOLD with an unchanged Sep’14 TP of Rs 500. Net sales up only 6.6% YoY: Emami reported a below-estimated net sales growth of 6.6% YoY to Rs 5.85bn, as the domestic business grew merely 5.1% YoY growth and CSD sales declined 14.1% YoY. International business was the saving grace, up by a strong 37% YoY. Management attributed the dismal performance to unfavourable winter season sales, but expects FY15 sales growth to recover to ~15%. Volume growth was muted at 1.5%, with winter brands seeing a 3.5% YoY volume decline and the non-winter portfolio a 5% volume growth. EBITDA margins surprise positively: EBITDA grew 29.1% YoY to Rs 1.77bn with margins expanding 525bps YoY to 30.2%. Gross margins improved by 300bps YoY on lower mentha prices, while the company also cut down on A&P spends (which declined by 360bps YoY to 15%, or down 15% in absolute terms). Management expects A&P spends to remain in the 15.5-16% range in FY14 but to spike to 18% in FY15 on account of new launches and brand extensions. Adj. PAT grew 30% YoY to Rs 1.5bn, ahead of our estimates on lower A&P spends. Maintain HOLD with a Sep’14 TP of Rs 500: We maintain HOLD on the stock with a Sep’14 TP of Rs 500. Key upside risks include a pickup in volume growth and a further drop in input prices (leading to higher-than-estimated margins), while downside risks include a volume slowdown, and lower international business growth/intensity impacting margins.

The total organized retail supply in 2013 stood at approximately 4.7 million sq. ft., witnessing a strong yo-y growth of about 78%, over the total mall supply of 2.5 million sq. ft. in 2012. Most of the supply in 2013 was concentrated across Tier II cities; however 2014 is likely to witness supply addition in the key hubs of NCR and Mumbai. Commenting on the report, An-

India Remains World’s 4th Largest Steel Producer

India’s position in world’s steel production remained unchanged at the fourth slot in 2013 with an output of 81.2 million tonnes. This is despite India logging the second highest growth of 5.1% among the top five producers. The total turnover of India’s packaging industry, which is growing at about 15%, is expected to touch USD 32 billion by 2020 on increasing demand. “Indian packaging industry is growing at the rate of 13-15% annually. The total turnover of the industry is about USD 24.6 billion. It is expected that by 2020, the turnover will reach USD 32 billion,” Director of the Indian Institute of Packaging (IIP) N C Saha told PTI.

RBI’s Guidelines On Gold Jewellery Positive Says Crisil

The Reserve Bank of India’s two recent guidelines on lending against gold jewellery are overall positive for the sector. They bring in a level playing field for gold loan non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) and banks on the loan-to-value ratio, a key parameter for competitive dynamics in the sector. Furthermore, the guidelines provide clarity on valuation norms to be used for the underlying collateral. Together, these measures will enhance stakeholder confidence. Therefore, the gold loan NBFC sector, which has witnessed volatile phases in growth, asset quality, and profitability in the past two years, will move to a regime of stable growth and predictable asset quality. CRISIL, however, believes that the profitability of gold loan NBFCs will continue to be under pressure over the medium term due to an expectation of heightened competitive intensity in the sector, higher operational costs of complying with these regulations, and performance of loans lent at relatively high LTVs in the past.

Kelkar Says No Incentive To RIL To Gold Plate Or Under-Produce By A Business Reporter

n a validation of Reliance Industries’ stand, an expert committee led by former finance secretary Vijay Kelkar has said that there is little incentive for oil and gas explorers to ‘gold plate’ costs or wilfully under produce. The much-awaited report of the Kelkar panel on ‘Roadmap for Reduction in Import Dependency in Hydrocarbon Sector by 2030’ cites examples of Oil and Natural Gas Corp’s (ONGC) western offshore Neelam oifields and its Russian asset Imperial Energy to say not just RIL’s KG-D6 but fields around the world have experienced unexpected production declines.

RIL’s Bay of Bengal KG-D6 fields, which began gas production in April 2009, had hit a peak of 69.43 million standard cubic meters per day in March 2010 before water and sand ingress led to shutting down of more than onethird of the wells. Last month, the output dipped to around 11 mmscmd as opposed to a projected 80 mmscmd. Currently, it is around 13.7 mmscmd. “Typically, the range of uncertainty around the recoverable resources reduces but does not disappear as a field is appraised and developed. This uncertainty can result in unexpected production declines,” the panel said in Part-1 of its report that was submitted to the Oil Minister M Veerappa Moily.

How did you bag the song picturization for ‘Jai Ho’ and ‘Dabaang’? After watching our work in ‘Lucky... No Time For Love’, T-Series called us and signed us again to direct their next. And then Salman made the turn around in our careers when he called and asked us to direct songs for his blockbuster ‘Dabangg’ where he was launching Sonakshi Sinha.

Which among your songs are your favorite ones? I guess our favourite song would be “Mast Mast Do Nain”, as we created the iconic visuals of Chulbul Pandey’s glasses with hearts in it, which was also a

How do you relate to a superstar like Salman Khan? Salman is a complete prototype of Prince Charming, straight out of a fairy tale. So with him in mind, the concepts flow easy. However, the difficult part is the setting to put him in, as he is such a big star. Create the Geography for him, is a challenging task. Do you have a storyboard for picturising songs? Yes we do. The song should be unique and it should also go with the story line. We love the way “Tere Naina” of ‘Jai Ho’, which was shot in Romania, has shaped up, with Salman looking his dashing best. On the other hand, “Tere Naina” is visualized as Salman Khan’s return to an innocencent song.

What’s happening on the ‘I Love New York’ front? It’s been delayed for so long? As far as I know now, the film is slated to release in April 2014.

What are your forthcoming projects? As of now ‘Jai Ho’ is close to releasing, and we pray the film becomes a hit. We also have other projects in hand, but will talk about them when the time is right.

ANBIR KAPOOR is all set to do a cameo in megastar Amitabh Bachchan starrer ‘Bhootnath Returns’. Bachchan, 71, took to Twitter today to express his joy at sharing screen space with the ‘Barfi!’ star, reported PTI. “Ranbir Kapoor on set at ‘Bhoothnath Returns’, a small cameo for him... Generous of him!,” Bachchan tweeted with a picture. ‘Bhootnath Returns’ is a sequel to the 2008 horror-comedy film ‘Bhootnath’, which also starred Juhi Chawla and Shah Rukh Khan, besides Bachchan as the friendly ghost. Bachchan also posted on the micro-blogging site, that he attended the the premiere of ‘Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom’ in Mumbai along with South African actors Atandwa Kani and Terry Pheto. The film, starring Idris Elba as Mandela, chronicles the journey of the anti-apartheid icon. “Caught up with work and then to be present at the release of film on Mandela .. CE film-maker Subhash Ghai, the man who gave us memorable films like ‘Kallicharan’, ‘Karz’, ‘Ram Lakhan’, ‘Karma’, ‘Vidhaata’, ‘Pardes’ and others celebrates his birthday on January 24. Subhash Ghai, the master filmmaker, is finally coming out with his new directorial film ‘Kaanchi’ which is releasing in in the next couple of months. Ghai – ‘The Showman’ – who is known for launching new faces and big dramas, is back in his element. ‘Kaanchi’, a musical thriller with a love backdrop, has a new star cast with veteran actor Rishi Kapoor playing the villain and Mithun playing an imprortant role. ‘Kaanchi’ is the story of a 17-year old girl’s journey from the mountains to the city. Ghai admits, “Yes, it is the story of a young innocent girl’s journey from the mountains to the city. She’s a girl on a mission.” Ghai is kicked about returning to direction after four years. “I directed ‘Black & White’ and ‘Yuvraaj’ in 2008. Then I got busy with my film school Whistling Woods. Now I am directing again.” Mukta Arts – his production banner – will be launching three more films this year, and one of them will be ‘Ishq De Maare’, which will star Dharmendra, Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol. Ghai introduced a lot of fresh talent and groomed each one, making their journey to stardom easier. That’s probably why he set up Whistling Woods in 2006, an international quality film and television training institute. U P E R S TA R Shah Rukh Khan today suffered an injury while shooting for an upcoming film in Juhu and has been admitted to a hospital here. Shah Rukh, 48, was admitted to Nanavati hospital after he was injured while shooting for Farah Khan’s ‘Happy New Year’ at a five-star hotel here, sources close the film said to PTI. Apparently, a hotel door crashed on him, following which the bleeding actor was rushed to the hospital. Further details are awaited.

CTOR Sanjay Dutt, whose wife Maanyata is currently undergoing medical treatment at a hospital, visited a temple and dargah to pray for her recovery. Earlier this month, Maanyata was admitted to a private hospital in suburban Mumbai after being diagnosed with a tumour in her liver and a suspected heart ailment. Dutt, who is under emotional distress because of his wife’s ill-health, recently visited the Shree Siddhivinayak Ganapati Mandir in Dadar and the holy Sayyed Haji Abdul Rehman Shah Baba Dargah in Dongri to pray for her recovery, reported PTI. On December 21, the 53-yearold Bollywood actor and 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case convict, was granted a month’s leave from Yerwada Jail in Pune after he filed

an application citing his wife’s illness. Earlier this week, the Maharashtra government extended his parole by another 30 days, on the grounds of his wife’s illness. Dutt is currently undergoing the remaining 42 months of his five year sentence in prison.

N the recent past, one has come across random films labeled as classic, or, one better, cult classics. And one has to strain the memory to try to remember if the said film had even made a ripple, let alone a splash when it was released; if it was released. To quote the dictionary definition of what constitutes a classic: “1. An artist, author, or work generally considered to be of the highest rank or excellence, especially one of enduring significance. 2. A work recognised as definitive in its field. Now try to apply these to any of the films that have recently been called classic. Except perhaps for ‘Mughal-e-Azam’ or ‘Sholay’, none would qualify. That raises the question, who decides what film is a classic? The obvious answer is time. People often mistake popular-

ity or success for quality and the two, as we have repeatedly seen, are mutually exclusive. Not always, but more often than not. Decades down the line, a 1943 film called ‘Kismet’ directed by Gyan Mukherjee and starring Ashok Kumar with Mumtaz Shanti is considered a classic, and rightly so. It was a trendsetter, ahead of its times, pushed the boundaries of what the public would accept (an anti-hero?) and had the plotting and pace that makes it watchable even today. But every film that makes it to the top-grosser list is not a classic, many are quite ordinary—

Sonam not only stars in a remake of Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s beloved film Khubsoorat, she has decided to name herself after another beloved female protagonist from another Hrishikesh Mukherjee classic ‘Mili’. Happily revealing this nugget of information Sonam says, “Yes, that’s right. My director Shashank Ghosh, my producer Rhea who also happens to be my sister (laughs) and I, we all decided not to name my character Anju. That was the name Rekhaji was given by Hrishida in Khubsoorat. We decided to name my character Mili.” When probed on why the crossover was made from one beloved Hrishida heroine to another Sonam Kapoor said: “We are all huge fans of Hrishikesh Mukherjee. CHANDIGARH: Kings XI Punjab have roped in former India all-rounder Sanjay Bangar as their assistant coach for the seventh edition of the Indian Premier League. Set to gain from ICC overhaul, BCCI backs revamp

CHENNAI: Set to benefit immensely from the structural overhaul of the ICC, the BCCI unanimously backed the plan which would cede executive decision-making in world cricket to India, Australia and England. In an emergent meeting called here, the Indian Board reviewed the proposals of the ICC Commercial Rights Working Group, which have created quite a flutter in international cricket. "The committee discussed at length the proposals of the ICC Working Group and felt that this proposal was in the interest of cricket at large," BCCI Secretary Sanjay Patel said in a statement after the meeting.

Keshavan hopes to peak at 'right time' for Sochi Games

NEW DELHI: He might have failed to defend his Asia Cup title, but luge athlete Shiva Keshavan is hoping to peak at the right time for the Winter Olympics, starting in Sochi on February 6. The winner of Asia Cup gold in 2011 and 2012, Keshavan had to settle for a silver in Nagano, Japan last month. "I have been training non-stop since the end of September 2013. I have not been home for over four months now. I wanted to use all the time on the track available to us. My physical condition is good, having undergone intensive training this year. I hope I can peak at the right time for the Olympic Games," Keshavan told PTI. Khan of Bharat Petroleum lost to Railway cueist Dilip Kumar of Tamil Nadu 2-4 in the best-of-seven frames pre-quarter-finals that triggered an ominous day for the favourites which included the premature exit of twice Asian champion Yasin Merchant who went down to Faisal Khan in the quarter-finals. Asian 6Red bronze medallist Laxman Rawat of CCI went down to state selection sub junior champion Ishpreet Singh Chadha in another pre-quarter-final. College Sports Council, at the Bombay Gymkhana. Puneet Pareek gave Mumbai the perfect start with a 3-1 win over Anshul before Ashray Ohri pulled one back for Delhi by winning the second tie, in the best-of-five championship round. But Mumbai earned victory the hard way when their star player Shashi Pandey was stretched all the way into the decider in a gruelling encounter before he overcame a gallant Utkarsh Kumar 11-9, 11-6, 10-12, 12-14, 14-12 in a pulsating third tie. UMBAI: In a bid to revive the sporting ties between Indian and Pakistan in hockey, the Pakistan Hockey Federation has sent a memorandum to Hockey India to stage a bilateral event between the two nations. Speaking at an event of Star Sports where they are slated to invest Rs 1500 crores in the sport over the next eight years, Pakistan Hockey Coach Tahir Zaman confirmed this development stating that the government of Pakistan has backed this move. “Before coming (to India), we had sent a memorandum to Hockey India for a bilateral series. Pakistan has approved it, being the national coach of Pakistan Hockey team, I can mention this. We are waiting to get a letter of understanding from Hockey India. Soon, we want not only the senior team, but the junior, u-14, u-16 even state level teams, we are thinking of playing on that level. The interaction should happen on a regular basis. We are waiting for clearance from the government side,” said Zaman. Zaman said he was optimistic about the Indian side reciprocating and hoped that regular series will help the Indian and Pakistani help increase the following for the game. He also said that the PHF has given certain dates and were ready to play according to any dates decided by Hockey India. “I am very much hopeful. Soon we will see Pakistan take on India, with some matches in Pakistan and some matches in India as well on every level. We are very serious about it and Hockey India is also very serious about it. This can be an event that can increase the number of hockey players and viewers. We have written about the suitable dates, so that we can discuss. There are going to be many events in India. So whichever date is suitable for them, we will try to play accordingly,” he said.

However, both countries haven't played a test series since 2006 which was won by Pakistan in Pakistan. Harendra said the restoration of the series will be a shot in the arm for Indian hockey. “It is a very important point. I feel it is vital to promote Indian hockey. It will generate huge interest in hockey. The India-Pakistan series is known as the clash of titans and that has generated a huge atmosphere. Once the series gets underway, huge amount of kids will pick up the sticks and play because of its live telecast and that will help promote the game,” said Harendra. He said that the absence of the Pakistani at this edition of HIL won't be so huge since there are top Olympians from various corners of the world taking part, but added that it would have increased the glamour quotient because people love to watch the skills of Indians and Pakistanis. “It wont be a big impact. But if they were allowed to play, it would have increase the glamour [in the sport] and the impact of the league. What made you decide to take up golf? It is a long story. My father used to work on the golf course, so it started that way. My elder brother also played golf professionally and I received my early tutions from him. I have been playing golf since I was seven-years-old. As I played and improved, I reached a roadblock and I realized that purchasing the required equipment was very expensive along with finding a sponsor. Due to cash constraints, I couldn’t go for tours either. That journey was tough, so I decided to be a caddy and I learned the many lessons of golf by being a caddy. When amateurs used to play, I used to guide them as a caddy. So when they made mistakes, I learned from that too. In an exclusive chat Kolkata is a football crazy city, with NEIL JOSHI, the 35-year-old Chowrasia affirms what brought about your interest in a niche sport like golf? that all is well with the game in India as he People are still crazy about football but there is a change in the way people perceive goes for the ‘flags’ in an all-out bid to and see golf. I see golf among the fastest growing sports in the country. Cricket will always be regain his form there but golf is improving quite a lot as there are lot of professionals playing on the tour with many of them are coming from abroad and also some competing overseas.

The year 1999 was very important for you, as you finished second to Arjun Atwal ... Was that a big achievement for you? It was a big achievement as I had turned professional in 1997 and in the course of that year I somehow played but couldn't travel anywhere in the country or out of it due to financial constraints. However, I established myself during the next year and I felt that I can play on the Indian tour. So I felt if I need to move ahead then there will be a need to put in a lot of practice and focus whole-heartedly on my game. During that year, I put lot of effort in my game and then came the Indian Open in 1999 and I didn't expect that I would finish second. I didn't realise I would be in such good form during that time. Things were falling in to place. That changed my entire career. Playing your last tournament of year in Calcutta, you had an unwelcome friend on the greens? I was at hole number eight and I struck the ball and it went near the shrubs and people were moving from one place to another as they saw a snake in order to avoid it. So I went near it and tried to move the snake, but it decided to stay put and didn't budge from its position. Around three-four times, I tried to move it with my club as the ball was lying right next to it but it showed its resilience. It showed its face and sat down again. I thought let me not trouble it and dropped another ball and played my shot.

my career took another step forward and got an opportunity to play on the European tour. Do you feel you are presently in your best form? As of now I feel I am playing well and my performance has improved. I just need to be positive in my mindset. How has been 2013 for you? Honestly, I did do not do well as I lost my card to the European tour. My next target is to regain that.

How do you see Indian golf going in the next 3-4 years? Indian golf is in a strong position. The amateurs, juniors and the professionals – all are seeing lot of golfers. There are many Indians on the Asian tour and I see at least four-five players on the US Tour.

Anirban Lahiri is looking good and among the top ranked Indians at 111. how difficult is it to be in the top 50? Jeev Milkha Singh was in the top 50 a while ago. Now at least you find someone in the top 50 or near to that. Earlier, there wasn't anyone in the top 50 and Indian golf is looking quite positive. We will see the rankings improve in due course of time.

INTERVIEW

You have played a huge part at the Calcutta Golf Course, have you had any similar encounters with snakes? There has been several times that snakes came on the greens. However, there weren't poisonous as being over there and working at the golf course, we learned which ones had poison and which weren't poisonous. This happens usually during the winter season.

You finished the last tournament in December in 17th position during the PGTI Championship. How upset were you with the result? I wasn't happy with the way I finished because I was the defending champion and expectations were high from me. I was playing really well, right through the tournament. The putting didn't work for me during this tournament. I experienced an off week. You have won eight titles so far, which title has been the pick of the lot and in which year did you feel you were at your peak? In 2008, I won the Emaar MGF European Golf Open and came second in the Indian Open in 1999, I felt it was now I could play at the international level. I felt that

Your story is quite similar to another golfer Raja Sardar. With players from middle-class backgrounds adopting the sport. Do you feel, it still can be touted as a rich man's sport? It is an expensive sport. If we speak about myself or Raja Sardar, we were involved with the club and hence got an opportunity to learn the sport and work our way up the ladder. However, if someone wants to play and is not associated with the club then he won’t get an entry. Here we were working in the club. If you want to promote the sport, then it is necessary to have a number of public golf courses in the country. Only then will players from the middle class turn to the sport.

This year won't see the Avantha Masters, with the sponsors pulling out, how will it affect the tour? It will certainly affect the tour. It is a bad phase and the economic situation isn't very healthy. I was checking the schedule in 2014, you have some tournaments making exits and some tournaments starting. The first tournament of the season is the PGTI Rs. 50 lakh prize money event, which is in a new entry to the calendar year. The situation will improve as time goes on. What will be your area of focus this season? I want to head to Europe and play as many events possible. So as of now things seem set.
