State board delays exam forms; new date for filling them clashes with Diwali holidays

By Yatin Ingle

W

hile the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) board examination form filling has been made online; the State School Certificate (SSC) forms are still to be filled offline. Though the SSC board exam form has to be filled in August-September period, the state board has just declared the dates for filling the forms. As the dates clash with the Diwali vacation, SSC students across the state are in a dilemma whether to

go out of town during the vacation or to stay back home to fill the forms. Every year around six lakh students appear for SSC exams across Mumbai. In the midst of the academic year, students appearing for the SSC exam have to fill up an exam form for registering themselves for the board exam. Once the form is filled, during FebruaryMarch students are issued hall tickets. Every year the form is filled during August-September, but this year the month of October is al-

most over and the board has just declared the dates, which clash with the Diwali vacation. Uday Nare, senior teacher, Hansraj Morarji Public School told ADC, “This is unfair to students; the dates are declared so late and are clashing with Diwali vacation. Students go out of town sometimes, during vacations. They may have also booked tickets and now will have to decide whether to go on a vacation or to stay back and fill forms.” In August, the State had stepped

ahead and had introduced online form filling for HSC. When the ADC spoke to Laxmikanth Pandey, Chairman, MSBSHSE, Mumbai division, he said, the forms will be available at various centres from where the schools have to collect. Students will just have to go their schools and fill their forms. Students should not be tensed as their schools have been instructed about the form filling schedule and the board will see to it that the vacations are not affected.”

our undergraduate students from the BMC-run KEM Hospital have been diagnosed with dengue in the last fifteen days. Two of these were confirmed cases while two were suspected cases of dengue. All the doctors have recovered and have been discharged. Two of them who were out-station students have gone to their respective home towns. All the four female undergraduate students were residing in the KEM accommodation opposite Haffkine Institute for Training, Research and Testing in Parel. The ADC was informed that required measures have been taken and that the students have been told not to ignore any fever and seek medical assistance immediately.

t looks like the team from Delhi’s National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme which is on a visit to Mumbai, might have an interesting stay here as the city is showing trends in dengue that doctors in the BMC run KEM hospital have never seen before. Dengue, which was considered a disease that normally affects adults, has also started affecting children this year. To add to this, it looks like that the age group is relatively low and infants who are less than a year old are being attacked by the virus. KEM hospital, between September and October, has seen five cases of infants in the age group of three to seven months, being admitted with dengue. In September, there were three cases, while two more were reported last week. “This is the first time that we are seeing such small children being admitted with dengue. Generally, dengue was seen only adults. It then started affecting children and now infants under the age of one are also suffering from it. Babies are generally fully clothed and protected from mosquito bites. They are also not very exposed to the outside world. Still cases of babies affected with dengue are now being

What the BMC had to say... Rajan Naringrekar, BMC Insecticide officer agreed that mosquito load has increased in the city and the reasons for this is erratic rainfall and other factors conducive in the city for mosquito breeding. “Rainfall increases mosquito breeding and we have had erratic rainfalls this year. Also, the habitats of mosquitoes have changed now. The breeding places are more indoors now. The BMC is taking of breeding places that are outdoors but keeping breeding at bay indoors is an individual’s responsibility. Making sure that vases, flowerpots and tarpaulins do not become breeding spots for mosquitoes is responsibility of every citizen. Such breeding places could lead babies being bitten by mosquitoes. Also, a baby can’t avoid a mosquito bite by swatting it away, the way an adult can,” said Naringrekar. shwetha.kannan@afternoondc.in

George Menezes is 84 and for longer than we can remember, he has been regaling us with stories, anecdotes and plain remembrances of his life, first in the Indian Air Force, then as a diplomat with the Indian Embassy in Paris, during his lengthy assignment with Hoechst Pharmaceuticals as a personnel director, and long after his retirement. For us the humour slipped (but not by much) when he

George Menezes

joined the BJP, but that is in the past. And now he has given us the good news that his latest book, The Naked Liberal, has sold out its first print run – all 500 copies. Which may not seem like a large number, but it can count its existence only in double digits days, so sold out and 500 copies is not a bad image at all. It was released by the Cardinal, Oswald Gracias, at a special little function last Saturday and George being George and very generous, he took the opportunity to felicitate two members of the Christian community. One was Anita Lobo,

the plucky volunteer traffic warden who had a rather nasty run in with one of the sons of industries minister Narayan Rane some time ago. She did not back down and that was the trouble. The other was General (Retd) Ian Cardozo, hero of the Battle of Sylhet, the first disabled officer in the Indian Army to be given his own command, thus paving the way for a huge change of mindset towards this segment in the Forces. The ADC had an interview with him last Monday and is always willing to write about him again! George as a Squadron Leader was Cardozo’s rank senior and remembered him with awe. “He never feared the four letter word which began with ‘F’,” he said, as the audience broke into laughter. “He never feared FEAR,” continued Cardozo as he spoke of the many things Menezes stood and fought for. “George is like a diamond: Freedom fighter, activist… not bothered about himself but concerned about others. He has packed his life into doing things. George is someone who is not afraid to call a spade a spade.” Then the baritone-voiced Gerson DaCunha read from the book, an anthology of his writing, reflecting on growing up as the eldest son of the eminent Professor Armando Menezes, a life spent between Goa and Bombay, his closest relationships, youthful experimentations with marijuana, joining the BJP, and being an outspoken lay conscience of the Catholic Church. retirement “warrants national introspection”. “How do you cope with a world without God?” is the question all of us are supposed to be asking ourselves. After all, “When Mr. Tendulkar walks out to bat for India, as he has 780 times, seething stadiums erupt, boiling over with cacophonous Sachinlove…..Perhaps 400 m watch on television, risking power surges to India’s jerry-rigged grid, which end abruptly the moment Mr. Tendulkar gets out, as millions switch off.” And later. “His final Test against West Indies in his native Mumbai, will be his 200th….In a country scarred by a long history of being second best, where strident nationalism rarely conceals the lingering insecurity that many

Indians, even rich ones, feel about their place in the world, this success is glorious. India’s national hero is also a world-beater”. As with everything in the magazine, this is also brilliantly written. If there is one little quibble, it is with the fact that the article seems to end on a downer. Sachin straddles two worlds, the writers says, the old and the new. In the new world that he has been inhabiting with some discomfort due to fading eyesight and reactions, the runs have sort of dried up. Yet he has stayed on in spite of his reduced output. Many Indians, Banyan says, are secretly dismayed by this and see it as a “more dismal exemplum” (lovely word): of the impunity enjoyed by rich and famous people. “Indians

prefer their gods divine, not incarnate. For this same reason, many dread what is rumoured to be Mr. Tendulkar’s next innings – in politics”.

This evening at the Bhau Daju Lad Museum in Byculla’s Jijamata Udyan promises to be very special, encasing as it does, the vernissage of The Sassoon Album, an exhibition produced in association with the British Library. And just to give you a taste of the delights therein, here is a photograph of Masina Hospital as we have never seen it. The photographs on show come from an album presented to the British Library in 2012 by Edwina and Sybil Sassoon, descendants of the great merchant family whose history is intimately connected with that of nineteenthcentury Bombay. This Jewish dynasty came to Bombay from Baghdad in the midnineteenth century and rose to commercial and philanthropic prominence in India, China and the City of London under its patriarch David Sassoon (17921864). In Mumbai, we are all familiar with the library that carries his name, opposite the

cobras, two from Shivainagar and another two near the Bethany Hospital at Kokanipada. She and her senior in the Thane-based World Wildlife Association, Jeet Gupta, took the bag out to the wilds and released them gently. She has been handling snakes for the past five years and says she absolutely loves what she does. She started out with non-venomous snakes and then “graduated” to the venomous ones. We asked Poonam whether attitudes towards snakes had changed in the last five years since she has been answering calls for help. She said a rather surprising thing. It seems that there is much more awareness of the value of snakes as a life form in the cities. “In the villages, the first instinct is to pick up a stick and beat a snake that has entered your home to death,” she asserted. “That must change because there are more snakes in the rural areas than in the cities.” The reptiles that she helped pick up yesterday were not exactly small. They ranged in size from seven feet to six, to five to four feet. The best part is they are all alive and doing well (presumably) in their new surrounds, far from the madding crowds of Mumbai.

xactly a day after the Bombay High Court expressed displeasure over the passport authority’s failure to take a stand on a petition filed by starlet and gangster Abu Salem’s former companion, Monica Bedi, the court on Wednesday directed it to process and decide on the application within 12 weeks. This comes after the division bench of Justice V.M. Kanade and S.C. Gupte which was hearing a petition filed by Monica seeking a direction to the passport office to take a decision on her application for re-issuance, observed that the Regional Passport Office (RPO) cannot sit on a passport application for days. On September 24, the court had given a last chance to the passport authorities to respond to Bedi’s petition. Bedi and Salem were arrested in Portugal and extradited to India in 2005. In the same

Monica Bedi year, she was held guilty of submitting forged documents for procuring her passport and sentenced to five years in jail. In 2007, Bedi was released on bail pending appeal. In 2010, the Supreme Court, while upholding her conviction, reduced the sentence to the period undergone by her in prison. “Bedi filed application for re-issuance of her passport on September 3, 2012. Her form was accepted and she was given an acknowledgement slip. However, till date

there has been no communication. No order has also been passed rejecting her application,” Bedi’s counsel Niteen Pradhan said. Bedi’s petition had stated that she wants to go abroad for shooting and her career is affected due to non-availability of passport. The RPO in its affidavit filed earlier had said, “It cannot issue passport if any proceedings pertaining to the offences lodged against her is pending before any criminal court. We have even sought NOC from Bhopal, Hyderabad and CBI Delhi pending which we cannot take a decision.” After hearing the sides, the court observed, “Whatever objections the passport authority have, inform those to the petitioner. If there are any formalities that need to be complied with, the petitioner may do so. We direct the regional passport office to complete the process within 12 weeks.” philip.varghese@afternoondc.in

he investigations into the mobile phone snatching case of Addl. Municipal Commissioner Mohan Adtani has suddenly come to a halt and investigators are uncertain about recovery of the cell phone. The reason for this is that the accused, who had snatched Adtani’s android phone, has sold each part separately. In fact, probing this case, police learned that the cell phone thieves have found a modus operandi on the same lines as vehicle thieves. Talking with the ADC, Addl. CP (South Region) Krishna Prakash said, “These days most of the mobile phones being Android, the thieves sell each part separately just like parts of vehicles are sold separately by vehicle thieves.” “Right from body of the phone to its screen as well as small parts like sensor, are disbanded and sold,” said Ra-

jendra Patil, inspector of Marine Drive police station. On August 31, two men on a motorcycle had snatched the mobile phone of Adtani while he was walking along Marine Drive on his way back to his Malabar Hill home

from the BMC headquarters. At around 9.40 pm, Adtani had reached Girgaum Chowpatty and was talking on his phone, when two men on a bike snatched his phone and sped away. neel.shah@afternoondc.in

They may be searching high and low, but the police failed to contact IM terrorist Usmani’s relatives after he gave them the slip from within the court house By Zuber Ansari

Indian Mujahideen (IM) terrorist Afzal Usmani duced before the special Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime (MCOCA) court. Usmani fled when the police escort had taken a group of the accused to the court corridor during lunch hour. More than a month after Usmani managed to slip away, the Mumbai and Maharashtra police, who are re-

portedly working day and night in collaboration with other national agencies, have failed to get any concrete lead which could help them nab him soon. Interestingly, Usmani’s Dharavi-based nephew, Javed Khan, and a canteen operator who had lent him Rs.600 on the day he slipped away from the court premises, have also gone missing. Many teams of City crime branch and Delhi Crime Branch have been raiding various places and maintaining visual and electronic surveillance around the country where Usmani could possibly hide, but are shocked by the fact that till date, Usmani has not contacted a single member of his family. The City and state police have interrogated many people in Navi Mumbai, particularly Vashi and Panvel, and other parts of the city, who Usmani used to deal with, but they revealed that after his name was linked to the blast case, they had severed all contact with him. According to close sources from the Anti Terrorism Squad (ATS) Mumbai, many evidences, including his previous telephonic conversation have been checked many times over, his former associates are also under the scanner, but none of them seem to know anything about

Railway employee who duped people wanting railway jobs absconding The railway employee along with a bus driver used to promise jobs to people and accept money from them, only to disappear later By Zuber Ansari

A

51-year-old bus driver has been arrested by Malad police while his colleague who used to work for Indian Railways has been absconding in a cheating case after a complaint was filed by a youth to whom they had promised a job in the Railways. After waiting for almost two years, the 22-year-old Manoj Aher approached the Malad Police station when the police picked up bus driver Gangadhar Digambar Keskar from his residence in Ambewadi. In his interrogation, he revealed that he was simply sending the victims to his colleague working in

the Railways and would take money from the victims for this. Manoj had paid them around Rs.3.5 lakh to get a job in the Railways two years ago but the accused soon disappeared and later threatened Manoj when he asked them about the job. Police Sub Inspector (PSI) from Malad police station M.J. Gurav said, “A manhunt has been launched the railway employee. When we contacted his superiors, they informed that he has not reported on duty since the last 15 days”. It is suspected that this is not the first such case, the accused are suspected to have duped other people too. They used to assure victims to place them on TC of booking clerk post, Gurav informed. Accused Gangadhar has been booked under various sections of the IPC along with his colleague, and on Wednesday he was produced before the court and was snet to police custody till September 25, Gurav added.

his whereabouts. Central Investigation Agency and Delhi Crime Branch raided many places in Gujarat on the basis of information from some former associates, but returned red-faced. Before being arrested in the blast case, Us-

mani was running a very successful car theft gang, and police have tapped many car thieves who earlier worked for Usmani, but have again drawn a blank. Shockingly, during background checks by the police, it emerged that for the past

two years, Usmani’s nephew, Javed Khan, used to visit him regularly while he was lodged in Sabarmati Jail in Ahmedabad. Even later, when Usmani was shifted to Taloja Jail, Khan would visit him there. Further, Usmani’s own brother also used to visit him

regularly in jail, but stopped doing so after sometime, while Khan started visiting him. The police are therefore collecting information regarding Javed Khan, and questioned his family, which claimed to be unaware of his whereabouts.

Things don’t go better with Campa Cola Continued from pg 1 « on the issue and his verdict would be final in the matter. However, before this could happen, Kunte walked out of his office, and his staff clarified that he had gone to the Mantralaya. Last week, the Improvement Committee passed a resolution to support Campa Cola residents and forward it to the Municipal Commissioner, requesting him to forward it to the Chief Minister. Councillors wanted to know about the progress of the resolution. “There are three questions to which everyone wanted answers,” said Dilip Patel, BJP councillor. “Why has no action been taken against the builder who is the prime culprit? Secondly, what action has been taken against the Engineers of the Building Proposal department who deliberately neglected the issue, and third, what could be the best solution to this deadlock? Only Municipal Commissioner Sitaram Kunte is in a position to answer these and he has left the office and gone to the Mantralaya.” Interestingly, Congress councillors also supported

Hardware stores are making a killing as the demand for pigeon nets has been steadily increasingly over the past several months. “Earlier, we used to sell stainless steel wired

meshes, but now they are being replaced by fancylooking coloured nylon nets, which help keep pigeons away from entering homes through windows,” said a shopkeeper in Bhayandar. Though considered meek and unaggressive birds, their droppings and feathers can cause serious ailments, including respiratory diseases.

According to civic officials, there are at least 45,000 such ‘disputed properties’ in city to which the civic body has sent notices under MRTP Act. If Campa Cola gets an exception, the same rule will become applicable to all properties. Henceforth, builders will construct more floors than legally granted by FSI and ultimately, the residents will have to pressurise the CM or the civic body to get the illegal floor regularised. the Shiv Sena and BJP councillors over relief to Campa Cola residents, and this has caused much tension for Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan. Standing Committee Chairman Rahul Shewale said, “We will continue this meeting tomorrow and the Municipal Commissioner will be present for it.” This is significant because in the normal course, ending the meeting would mean the issue could take as long as a fortnight to come up again. However, announcing that there was no ending to the meeting whioch would be “continued” the next day, means that the questions will have to be answered – today

the ‘Others’ category. “We have written to voluntary organisations representing the transgender community about enrolling them as voters in the ‘Others’ gender category. We are yet to receive any feedback from the community,” he said. Commenting upon the recent conclave in which the state government agreed to look into the community demands, Jadhav stated that it was the result of the community’s own initiative. Another problem that the transgender community is apprehensive about is the possible misuse of the registration facility by others who might fraudulently claim to be transgenders. “Most of us, like me, had

their old voter identity cards and PAN cards which were issued when they were males. For the last eight years I have been living with my Guru as a transgender. Now the old proof is of no use. The government needs to give us some alternate proof of residence,” Jadhav remarked. The transgender community in Mumbai is around 5,000 to 10,000 and is spread across localities like Kamathipura, Vikhroli, Malad-Malwani, Reay Road, Darukhana, Govandi and Mankhurd, disclosed Jadhav. As per the current voter list for 2013, the total voter population in Maharashtra is 7,98,54,016 crore. This includes 4,21,16,101 male, 3,76,18,281 female and 30 voters as ‘Others’.

The campaign meant to improve the travelling experience of train commuters in Mumbai, was received well by Mumbaikars.

he Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP)’s week-long campaign for around 72 lakh train commuters of Mumbai came to an end today. The campaign that engaged commuters was conducted from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CST) to Mulund station on the central line and from Churchgate to Dahisar on the western line of the suburban railway network. Volunteers of the BJP held signature campaigns and also travelled with the commuters to discuss their problems. They asked the commuters to fill up forms citing their grievances along with suggestions. According to Haidar Azam, co-ordinator of the programme, “College students and women gave an overwhelming response. Nearly 10,000

to 15,000 feedback forms were collected at very station during the week-long campaign”. The weeklong campaign ended in the presence of Ashish Shelar, Mumbai president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Shelar had an engaging conversation with the commuters regarding problems of sexual harassment, lack of proper sanitation facilities for ladies at railway stations and water coolers at stations with school-going children and college students having demanded a separate compartment for them. Pregnant women and cancer patients who are not allowed to travel in handicapped compartments have suggested that they should also have a separate compartment. Sunita Sathe (32), a commuter who travels from Virar to Santacruz every day, said, “There should be a

separate ladies compartment for pregnant women. It is very difficult for me to travel during peak hours”. Commuters also spoke about the inconvenient heights of several platforms. Another problem that the commuters discussed was the lack of Foot Over Bridges (FOBs). “A memorandum is going to be presented to the Railway Ministry. The railway authorities also need to give an assurance to the commuters. To put forth the requirements of commuters at every station, the station masters are going to be roped in too. If our demands are not met then we may even go for a rail-roko andolan at any of the stations or at Azad Maidan”, said Azam. According to Shalaka Salvi, President of the Mumbai Mahila Morcha (BJP) wing, “On October 27 and 26, a delegation is going to travel to Delhi to propose the memorandum to the UPA government’s union minister T. Baloo”. Women commuters have suggested that Mahila Sansthas should be allowed to run food stalls on stations since the quality of the food currently sold is not always hygienic and nutritious. Instead of binging on samosas and vada pav, sabzi rotis and thalis should be provided. According to Salvi, “There needs to be an increase in the number of homeguards and Railway Police Personnel (RPF) in ladies compartments. Women commuters have suggested that there should be women home guards in ladies compartments after 9 pm since they do not tend to trust the male counterparts”. We are also going to propose to the authorities that the RPF and Government Railway Police (GRP) personnel should be gender sensitised”, said Salvi. kainaz.choksey@afternoon.dc.in

BJP to Rahul: What has the UPA done to reign in prices? By Prashant Hamine

B

JP national spokesperson Nirmala Sitaraman yesterday lashed out at Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi wanting to know what happened to the Congress led UPA government’s assurance of reigning in the prices of essential commodities, made during 2009 Lok Sabha elections. Speaking to newspersons here, she said that the Bharat Nirman campaign of the Congress is based on half-truths. The Congress has engaged in a cherry-picking of projects that are implemented half-way and

claimed credit for it. Commenting upon Gandhi’s campaign rally speech in Rajasthan, she remarked that the Congress president’s speech resembled that of an opposition leader. Sitaraman stated that the Congress cannot talk about its performance on governance and development, as its leaders know that they will be exposed on their failures. She added that the Aadhar card project has failed and the government is trying to push through the Direct Cash Benefit Transfer scheme to beneficiaries, even as the Supreme Court has

BJP national spokesperson Nirmala Sitaraman

ruled that it cannot be made compulsory. She added that the real beneficiaries are not getting their Aadhar cards, and instead, illegal immigrants are getting theirs. Sitaraman charged the Congress of making baseless charges against Nitin Gadkari and Amit Shah and wanted to know why no FIR was being lodged against them. She further charged the Congress of misusing investigating agencies to prosecute and harass the opposition, and coerce partners like Mulayam Singh Yadav and Mayawati. Commenting upon the rising prices

of onion, she slammed union ministers K V Thomas and Sharad Pawar for their contradictory statements. Later speaking to newspersons, state party spokesperson Madhav Bhandari disclosed that the substance of the day-long brain storming session of the state level party spokesperson on the use of social media in election campaigning was that future elections will be fought on the platform of social media. He added that the state level cadres were briefed about propagating the party’s development plank without getting caught in the diversionary tactics of the Congress.

Escalating tension along LoC F

OLLOWING the visit of Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde and J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to the Line of Control (LoC), Pakistan’s army appears to have posed a challenge to India: It committed ceasefire violations at 30 Indian posts along the LoC. It killed an Indian jawan and injured three others. The situation looks quite serious along the LoC. Pakistan does not want peace with India: What it wants now is Kashmir. Developments along the border indicate that large-scale incursions of Pakistani terrorists are taking place. Pak President Nawaz Sharif appears to have a new plan to deal with the Kashmir issue. He has, for instance, asked US President Barack Obama to intervene and help get Kashmir for Pakistan. He knew what Obama would say and yet he raised the K-question with him. And now, the army-trained terrorists are attempting to cross into India. Why is he pushing terrorists into Kashmir? There could be a plan for destabilisation of the state and for causing violent disturbances. There are a few pro-Pakistani elements in Kashmir who are likely to provide various types of assistance. So, far, Pakistan has not attempted such a large-scale infiltration. Is another Kargil brewing along the LoC?

NYONE following Narendra Modi’s campaign knows by now that the wind he has caught in his sails rises from the deep despair that is the predominant mood in India after ten years of the Sonia-Manmohan government. But, it is only when you drive through Uttar Pradesh that you begin to understand why this despair caused by bad policies and bad governance is so deep. Having just driven to Kanpur from Delhi to attend his first rally in our biggest and electorally most important state allows me to tell you what I saw on the way. The journey began well enough. The Yamuna Expressway is by far the best road in India. It cuts the journey to Agra by at least two hours, is access controlled and modern by any standards. Its flaw is that unlike similar highways in other countries, it seems to have not given local communities en route to share in its benefits by allowing them the chance to make a living through highway hotels, restaurants, cafes and shops. Farmers who lose their land to big infrastructure projects are less likely to be hostile towards them if they can see their own lives improved as a consequence. For some reason, the planners of the Yamuna Expressway overlooked this just as successive governments of Uttar Pradesh have overlooked the incredible tourism potential of our biggest state. Tourism could transform Uttar Pradesh from being one of our poorest states to being one of our richest. Tourism officials calculate that nearly every foreign visitor to India visits the Taj Mahal. And, then there are Varanasi and Allahabad that draw Hindu pilgrims in millions and Moghul single trade towns like Khurja, Aligarh, Ferozabad, Kannauj and Moradabad that if cleaned up and restored to their medieval splendor could attract foreign visitors in droves.

Incredible UP On the way to Agra lies Mathura that has magnificent sculptures from the Kushan period that lie forgotten in a decrepit museum. My despair deepened from the minute we got off the expressway and found ourselves in the squalid, smelly bazaars of Agra that have remained this way for decades. The waters of the Yamuna are stagnant with filth and although on one of its banks stand the majestic ruins of Moghul forts and tombs on the other

bank there are hideous slums. If any of the chief ministers of this state had understood the importance of tourism to the economy they would at least have cleaned up the city of the Taj. If Agra’s neglect saddened me Kanpur horrified me. We entered this former ‘Manchester of India’ through a colony that seemed to be made entirely of rotting garbage. People had built their hovels from it, children played in it, garbage pickers hovered over it in search of material to sell and pigs, dogs and rats infested it in search of food. Out of this landscape rose a mosque and a temple and not too far from it a shopping mall made of glass and steel. So when I got to Modi’s rally and saw that

dream a new dream and hope for a better future for their children. He told them that it pained him personally when the Congress Party’s prince mocked the poor for their poverty by describing it as a state of mind. When you are born with a golden spoon in your mouth you can do this, he said, but he who had been born in poverty and spent his childhood mired in it could never do this because he knew intimately how awful poverty could be. Of the speeches he has made, it was one of the best I have heard and of the rallies he has addressed, it was one of the biggest but on the drive back to Agra I found myself wondering how he was going to win the fifty seats he needs in UP with the sort of leaders that sat beside him on the stage. Rajnath Singh and Lalji Tandon have spent their time bringing their sons into politics and not on building the party. And, Kalyan Singh’s supposed appeal to the lower castes vanished long ago. As for Vinay Katiyar’s hard-line Hindutva ideology, it is so much yesterday’s idea that the old slogan ‘Jai Shree Ram’ barely got a response from the crowd.

Vikas needed When I got to my hotel in Agra late that night, I noticed that it was bursting with foreign tourists. They filled the restaurants and shops and seemed to come from all over EuTavleen Singh rope and England. This, without any effort on the part of the state government to do even none of the big local leaders of the BJP evoked what Rajasthan and Kerala have done to build even a hint of applause from the vast seething a strong tourism economy. I went to bed that crowd I understood why. I arrived three hours night dreaming of a day when just the city of before Modi and this gave me more than Agra would attract more foreign tourists than enough time to listen to Kalyan Singh, Lalji the measly six million India does today. Hoarding has led to exorbitant price of onion ONION price is increasing at an alarming rate and has been sold by the shopkeepers at Rs.80 to Rs.105 per kg more than the price of the petrol per litre in various state bringing tears to the eyes of the aam aadmi and the assurance from Union agriculture minister Sharad Pawar that prices will fall is nothing but bogus and utter nonsense. I strongly feel that the government has lost their control over the price rise and has totally failed in the duties and on the other hand the hoarders are taking full advantage of the festival season and looting the public for their gains without bothering about the problems of the common man. The urgent need of the hour is that with Diwali, the festival of lights just round the corner the government must raid the hoarders who are doing black marketing and charging customers exorbitant prices for onion

Sonia Gandhi’s ambition HERE is an alternative view on the Indian political scenario. The Congress group has been willfully indulging in huge corruption. Sonia Gandhi has recently been declared as one of the ten richest politicians in the world. She has reached this peak from truly humble Italian beginnings. Where did all the wealth come from? I say that she allowed others in her group to accumulate wealth just as long as

and arrest them for taking the people for ride and at the same time Sharad Pawar, who has failed totally to control the rising prices of all the essential commodities must take full responsibility and step down from his chair. Government must take this matter seriously and release more onions at reasonable rates failing which the day is not far when people who are already angry with government will reject them totally for being anti-people. — Bhagwan Thadani, Mumbai

SUPPLY of onions from the suburbs is less and hence prices are going up. The short supply is due to poor transport service from Nashik. Hoarding of vegetables is the root cause of all the problems. Recent hike in petrol and diesel prices is also the cause for price hike. There is steep into Hindalco but not the PM who had finally approved the proposal for allocation of the blocks. This is the status when the investigation of a scam of huge proportion is being directly monitored by the apex court. Earlier, the PMO’s office and the ex-law minister ‘amended’ the status report of the CBI and the apex court is said to have admonished this highly objectionable act. A good number of files are said to be ‘not’ traceable and the PM disowned the moral responsibility by saying that he was not the ‘custodian’ of the files giving the impression that he is not ‘interested’ in the ‘truth’ coming out in this regard. The PM should hasten the tempo of the investigation so that the truth comes out at as ‘quickly’ as possible and the ‘convicted’ are punished as per the law. — T.M. Uday Shankar, Mumbai

Mr. Pawar, health is wealth SHARAD Pawar is always against good things. He is now upset on our ‘born tough’ CM for curtailing builders’ bonanza in Pune. Communal riots bill needed? AS reported since election is around the corner Congress party is on ‘passing spree’ of various OF bills, including the com- LETTER THE DAY munal violence bill. It seems they have woken up from the deep slumber of their 10 years’ rule. But they fail to realise that there is very large chasm between passing of a bill, its implementation and the final results. Retrospectively speaking, all the bills passed in past have

crease in onion prices now. Usually, vegetable prices come down drastically during the onset of winter. During the monsoons vegetables rot easily. Thus, prices are soaring and the common man will be wondering how to make up for the sudden spurt in vegetable prices, especially onion. Central/ State Governments are responsible for the price rise of onions. People do not want to compromise on taste and go for the best quality all the time. Stitch in time saves nine is true. The prices of all the vegetables are touching Rs.60 to Rs.80 per kg. and the State food minister is silent and could not curtail onion prices touching Rs.110 in Kashmir. Congress Govt proved ineffective in all the issues relating to price of consumer items as the party is busy addressing the scams involving their ministers. Hoarding of

AFTER the soaring prices of onion, a number of vegetables and fruits since long, now the price of potato has started to soar. And on the LoC unstopped firing with light as well as heavy weapons is soaring obviously, to help the anti-India terrorists’ infiltrations as the main part of Pakistan’s ‘foreign policy’ against India. But our soft ‘Nero’ Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is on foreign tour, playing the fiddle of MoUs and agreements when India’s ‘Rome’ is burning with all the aforesaid rise in prices. Such created circumstances, particularly related to the soaring prices of the daily needed potato, onion, vegetables and fruits compel aam aadmi of India to believe strongly of some nexus for funds for the coming general elections. — Hansraj Bhat, Borivali

met their Waterloo, as they did not have the desired effect, which establishes the fact that they were just introduced to fool and woo Indian voters. The question thus also arises if the bill is necessary and important, why it was not passed or implemented earlier. The important question thus also arises that the very word communal is very unpatriotic, anti-national and non-secular and against national integration and against unity among Indians with various castes, creeds and religions. Why can’t we have one law, one nation theory?

SEEING the severe infighting among the BJP ticket aspirants in Delhi, even the diehard supporter of the Party will have second thoughts before pressing the button corresponding to the Lotus symbol on the EVM during the Assembly polls there. The logical question that will crop up in his mind would be: With so much bickering within the Party over the CM issue, what is the guarantee that the Party, if voted to power, would not vertically split at the stage of portfolio allotment itself?

Killer radiation levels ought to be controlled ‘RADIATION: the silent killer‘ ( ADC , Oct 22 ), this huge and serious city health menace is indeed alarming especially considering the critical health hazard this modern electronic communication facility is causing to the citizens. It is furthermore alarming to observe the pathetic degree of dilution of setting the radiation levels in India. Compared to the Swiss and Austrian regulations Indian radiation level has been set at 10 % and 40 % less with those of these two Euro countries respectively, which is ridiculous and thereby, needing immediate modification. In such a city of population of 17 million, the number of users would be in tens of thousands. An observation by an IIT-ian has revealed that if the number of the cell phone towers be increased the radiation of each would then be reduced and would meet the desired level. However this would mean additional cost, which would be steep, so commercially the service providers would shy away until unless the DoT, India gets strict with the operators. Currently it is reported that India have 1.5 million cell towers, which needs to be doubled to meet the radiation level to suit the acceptable limit. It is high time that the Dot considers this more seriously and implement the revised regulation to avoid serious and thereby keep away this slow killing communication mode immediately. — Bikram Banerjea, Mumbai

SAFE OPTION: A viable solution would be to reduce the height of cell phone towers and relocate them in remote places away from dense residential areas.

THIS is with reference to the article ‘Radiation: the silent killer’ (ADC, Oct 22) which gives the most objective picture of the danger that is lurking in the numerous cellphone towers standing atop many residential buildings in the city and its suburbs. The radiation from the cell-phone towers is of the non-ionising category which is not capable of bombarding the persons affected like the gamma rays or X-rays. However, it is hazardous beyond a certain limit and Prof. Girish Kumar, of the Electrical Engineering Department of IIT Bombay has carried out a lot of

studies of the same and points out that the permissible radiation standards of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) are ten times more that that of some western countries — it is 4500 milliwaats/ square metre in India as against 450 MW/sq.m. in other countries abroad. Therefore, it is necessary for the govt. to see that the radiation strength in these monstrous towers is kept strictly under control. Dr. Kumar has also suggested that the height of the towers be reduced and preferably located in remote places away from dense residential areas. — Dr. V. Subramanyan, Thane

MUMBAI | THURSDAY, OCTOBER 24, 2013

>> GameOn India has been set up by Zeba Zaidi (left) with an aim to build a community of working class professionals and expatriates who all share a common love of sport. Their endeavour is to bring back the joy of playing sports in your lives by organising everything — from venue to equipment and refreshments to even team mates

Game On! Zeba Zaidi, co-founder of GameOn India, talks to Rhea Dhanbhoora about starting the company and the popular Devil’s Circuit initiative

W

ith over 16 years of experience in sales and marketing and having worked with Fortune 1000 companies in the UK and US, sports enthusiast Zeba Zaidi has chosen GameOn as a way to pursue her passion for sports. After graduating from college, Zeba pursued a diploma in marketing and jetted off to London to start a career in corporate sales. But, for the national level skater, sports was always her first love. After moving back to India, she started GameOn India with her husband Adnan Zaidi, who is also the cofounder and managing director of GameOn. The duo started Devils Circuit — India’s biggest and most difficult obstacle course. We catch up with her to find out more about her unique career choice and love for adrenaline. Tell us about how you got started with GameOn? GameOn India was launched in February last year. The intention of setting it up was simply to provide people with a common platform to come out and pursue their choice of sport, without any hassles such as where to play, arranging equipment or getting enough people. GameOn India simply asks you to register for the sport of your choice and we do the rest.

>> Devil’s Circuit (left) has been touted to be India’s most difficult obstacle course run. The run is dotted with freezing water, barbed wires and concrete walls to make the race more exciting and challenging

Do you and Adnan have the same ideas professionally? Adnan is passionate about football and we share a love for sports and the outdoors. We work as a team and ensure that we don’t discuss work post office hours in order to maintain a good work-life balance. As professionals, we both respect each other’s ideas and decisions and this helps us eradicate possible riffs. Any tips for other couples handling business together? It is not easy to keep the two separate! However, we do our best to not let one affect the other. I think it is important to be open to different ideas and hear them out. We have learnt to support each other. Do you play a lot of sports? What are your favourites? I was a junior national level skater and I am a recreational sports lover, so I understand the importance of sports and adventure. I believe that playing sports is not just fun, it is the biggest de-stresser, so I ensure that GameOn offers the best quality professional environment. I’m the first person to sign up for anything fun and adventurous, be it

tennis lessons, yoga or a run. In fact, we have a table tennis table and putting green to keep the atmosphere lively. Tell us a little bit about the obstacle run series? Devil’s Circuit is India’s biggest and most difficult obstacle course run. The 5km circuit has been designed with the help of ex-Indian Navy commandoes. It has obstacles consisting of mud, freezing water, barbed wires and concrete walls. The objective is to get out there and push your own boundaries and test your endurance. At the same time, it also proves to be an excellent team building initiative for corporate workplaces. What was the initial response? Our first run took place in Ludhiana last year and it was a sold-out event. We had never been to Punjab and had no idea how people would respond to our concept. But, we had participants from various walks of life and age groups. We even had a man cycle his way to and back from Chandigarh to Ludhiana to participate in the obstacle run! There was a 60-year-old grandmother who took part and told us to make sure that the next event was even tougher! The response has been overwhelming. You were a junior national level skater! Would you go back to skating? (Laughs) I’d love to as I was passionate about skating when I was younger. But now, I think I would want my children to pursue my dreams. I took pride in my talent and always wanted to pursue it further. However, as you grow older, priorities change. Once I began my higher studies, followed by my decision to take my career to the UK, I made it a conscious effort to keep sports as a vital part of my life. It became more of a hobby. Is there an age criteria for Devil’s Circuit? Our primary target audience lies between the age group of 18-45. Our aim and intent is to take more Indians, of both genders, outdoors and for them to start following a balanced lifestyle in which outdoor recreation plays a part. Want to know how to pick comfortable shoes? Here’s a quick guide: l Pick shoes that are comfortable for your feet. For example, if you have high arches, you shouldn’t be wearing boots and if you have wide feet, you need to be careful with closed shoes. l Even if you want to wear heels, an easy way to make them comfortable is to choose a chunky heel. Picking heels that are too thin strains your feet which can be bad for your feet in the long run. l You may think flats are better than heels, but some are actually worse for your feet. You need proper arch support and no exposed seams that will bruise your soles. l Oval, pointed and square toed shoes don’t encompass the natural shape of your foot and instead, force your toes into quite an unnatural position. Wear shoes with rounded toes instead. l Have your feet measured so that you can get the perfect fit. Sometimes, you might not account for an extra half or the fact that one foot is bigger than the other. Get them measured to find your perfect fit.

Your feet are going to bear the brunt of all the running around and family visits this festive season. We’ve all been guilty of wearing our negligee as a going out top, right? No! The flimsy top with tacky fringe detailing really looks out of place at the event. The pista green skirt is even more casual. Pair such a top with a sleek blazer and trousers, if you must next time.

Rhea’s hair, makeup and sun kissed tan make her look sensational! While we like this dress, it swamps her tiny frame. And a few accessories could have saved it from looking like a cleverly draped sheet. Also, we wished she would show off her lovely tan by wearing a vibrant shade.

The leggy beauty shows us that black doesn’t have to be boring. The partially sheer top is subtly sexy and she’s managed to pair it well with shorts. However, that aunty style handbag ruins her look a little. A simple black clutch would have worked much better.

We like Hazel’s simple black dress and as usual, her hair is beautiful and luscious. However, while her base look is great, her accessories let her down. The animal print clutch, blue shoes and aqua statement necklace are all mismatched which makes this look not-so-appealing.

While the cutout dress is bang on trend, the skin show is eye-catching and the focal point of the outfit. So, it’s strange why Shruti would want to add a further showstopper with that bib-like neckpiece. It’s over the top and makes her entire look seem cheap and tacky.

No one, and we mean no one, likes a know-itall. You might have views or information that you want to share, but doing so at every opportunity, without much fact to back you up, will mean that your colleagues will take you less and less seriously. Instead of coming up with long-winding explanation for things you don’t know, just say ‘I don’t know.’

rom workers who keep putting off assignments till kingdom come, to those whose style and manner of talking irritate others so much that they just want to avoid that person… there are a number of habits that can be really annoying and which you should avoid at work. It might be possible that you’re doing them unknowingly, so read the following points and ensure that you avoid these habits.

Not only does this annoy your team members and your boss, this irritating habit can make you lose your job. Being a procrastinator means that projects will always be late or too close to the deadline. This will not be appreciated by the other workers working on the project. And even when it’s a solo assignment, no one likes watching a co-worker whiling their time away doing absolutely nothing.

the noise source From talking loudly on the phone to your phone beeping annoyingly every few seconds, being a source of noise is one of the most common ways you could annoy your co-workers. If you know that you’re going to be getting calls or messages, keep your phone on silent. And when you do need to take a call, do so away from where everyone works… your phone conversations aren’t something people are interested in and it’ll only ruin their concentration.

lacK of coMMunication Promptly replying to emails, responding the moment your name is called out and being clear with your instructions/questions… these are things that are expected of a halfdecent worker and if you fail to communicate properly, it will increase the frustration levels of those who have to deal with you.

invading personal space Your co-workers are just that — co-workers and not your buddies. So, unless it’s a really, really good friend, don’t go around sitting on random people’s chairs, going through their desk or ‘borrowing’ stationery and most certainly do not switch on someone else’s PC just because you are bored. These are things that can lead to an ugly fight or will make your colleagues want to avoid you. So, stop!

find out how to deal with a lone wolf colleague

Last week, my boss gave me an assignment that I had to do along with a new girl who’s just joined. We discussed the project among us and informally decided who’ll do what. Today, she came up to me with more than what she was supposed to do. While I do see her enthusiasm and appreciate it, the problem is that I had already done the extra stuff that she did. So, one of us wasted our time and it’s not something we can afford at our office with our workload. She’s new, so I do not know how to explain this to her and I certainly don’t want to involve our boss in this. What do I do? — Meghna talpade, dadar dear Meghna, What you should do is let this go. Don’t talk about this episode with her, but make slight changes in your future communications so that this doesn’t happen again. As you said, it’s probable that she was just enthusiastic about her new job and maybe went overboard because of that. The next time you have a project with her — have a proper talk about it, ending with an email that details who’s supposed to do exactly what. If it was her enthusiasm that caused this, then it won’t happen again. But, if she suffers from the lone wolf syndrome — a habit of doing everything on her own — you need to sit her down and talk

about how to work as a team and why it would be better for the both of you. I’ve recently taken on a new job. I love the work. This is exactly what I’ve wanted to do all along, but my problem is that I just can’t seem to gel with my new colleagues, even though they’re quite friendly. They keep inviting me for breaks and after-work coffee, but I keep saying no because I don’t see how I can mix in with them. I feel quite left out and really do not like this aspect of my job. Is there any way out? — amisha solanki, santacruz dear amisha, From what you’ve said, it seems like you haven’t given your co-workers a chance. I’m not blaming you. Maybe you are shy or just nervous and unsure about how to proceed. What you need to do is say ‘yes’ to when they ask you to hang out with them. Don’t assume you won’t get along. You can only say that once you’ve tried mixing with your co-workers. Once you start talking to them, we’re sure that you’ll find at least a few coworkers who you can connect with. send your questions to womansworld@afternoondc.in before wednesday

If you come from a big family you’ll know that all the parties this season also mean that you’ll have to babysit your fair share of relatives’ children. Rhea Dhanbhoora brings you a few tips matters. You never know information will come handy.

when

Don’t make a mess

Be positive Think of the sort of adults you were most drawn to as a child. Nobody likes a domineering adult who is constantly telling you what not to do. Similarly children do not like it when they are constantly told what to do and what not to do. They value their freedom just as much as we do. Children like positive adults who are fun and full of life. Even if you have to give them direction, try to be fun and encouraging. A great tip to get them to do what you want is positive reinforcement. Children will be much more willing to accommodate rules when they think it’s a game — or said in a positive manner.

stay focuseD Remember to keep your eye on the kids at all times. Also, remember that they’re looking up to you as a role model. So, watch your language, be careful about what you say on the phone, conduct yourself in a responsible manner and try and be a good role model. Children are very observant and impressionable and pick up things very easily. Because of their malleable nature, they can pick up bad habits just as easily as good habits. So babysitters, along with the children’s behaviour, watch your own!

Be active

E

ven if you love being around children, taking care of them can prove to be quite a challenge. Children are a handful and if they don’t like you, they can get even more difficult. If you’re planning on babysitting, you need to keep a few things in mind. Read on to become a babysitter who children keep asking for and parents are comfortable leaving their tiny tots with.

Be creative Taking care of children is not easy. Being a little creative will help you discipline them without coming across as too strict. Remember that you’re not their parent, so they’re not going to take very well to being scolded by you. Try to come up with fun and creative ways for them to follow rules and do as you say.

No parent wants to come home to a mess. It’s great to have fun with the kids — just make sure you clean up afterwards. Don’t leave toys strewn around, clean up art supplies, switch off unnecessary lights and fans and make sure everything is in the right place. Some children can be extremely hyper and naughty and may break valuable items at home. Make sure you clean up the mess after ensuring that the child is unhurt. Every parent loves to come back to a spic and span home.

Too hard-to-get?

MUMBAI | THURSDAY, OCTOBER 24, 2013 Shutterstock

Afternoon Despatch & Courier

I work as a personal assistant in a major company. I am very happy with the work and pay. But, I have a problem. It’s not a big one, but it is affecting me and makes me sad. My boss is a good one... But!

Uh-Oh! Here he comes.

>> Don’t delay getting in touch just for the sake of it. Call your crush when you want to speak to him

Every time he approaches me, which is at least 20 times an hour, I dread it. I see him coming towards me, smiling mostly... and I CRINGE in ABSOLUTE FEAR!

Even a study proves that playing hard-to-get works well to find a genuinely interested partner. Priyanka Singh tells you how to nail the trick

P

laying hard-to-get is a very old trick in the treasure trove of love advice. This trick stands on the belief that men love ‘the chase.’ The hard-to-get modus operandi has backing from science as well. A study suggested that if you want a serious relationship, it pays for men and women to play hard-to-get. According to research, a benefit of playing hard-to-get is attracting a higher-quality mate with the greatest commitment for a long-term relationship. However, a lot of women kill their chances of landing their dream man because they play too hard-to-get. We tell you how to use this strategy correctly.

Waiting to call

Because when he opens his mouth...

waiting sends the message that you’re a player, insincere and unable to commit. Wait too long and a perfectly great match could simply lose momentum and fizzle out. But, if you mix up your call back time (consistent yet unpredictable), you’ll still be hard to get.

So many optionS old move: Getting a man to accompany you to a place where you know that the guy you are interested in will be present. Do it right: Trying to get attention so your crush knows you’re a hot property only sabotages your chances with him, because it basically broadcasts that you’re insecure and trying to making him jealous. Letting your crush wonder if you’re seeing someone makes you intriguing; letting him know you are keen on others, makes you unavailable.

old move: Let a pre-set amount of time go by before getting in touch. Most people have their own version of these waiting-game rules (three days after getting the number, two days after the a little over-intereSteD first date). Do it right: Call the person when you old move: Tease wildly over email or cell, want to talk. Waiting just for the sake of but act cool with physical contact.

Do it right: It’s so easy to be suggestive when you don’t have to see the person, but then you meet him or her and have to see if the chemistry’s actually there. Limit your between-date communication, especially anything saucy. Then any in-person flirtation will feel genuine and exciting — not disappointing.

BuSy for DateS old move: Pretend to have so many plans, it’s impossible to squeeze in a date. Do it right: It takes a lot of courage for someone to ask you out, so it can be a big turn off if your response is “Can we do it two weeks from now?” It’s great to have no time — proves you’ve got a busy life, making you all the more appealing. But, if there’s literally no time to date, then you shouldn’t be dating at all. You can suggest something like this: “I’m quite busy, but I was hoping to catch this band over the weekend. Want to check it out?” Not only will you make time for someone special, you’ll bond in new ways and get to know each other’s interests.

« DEAR GRACE, I HAVE A PROBLEM... Dear grace, A male colleague and I commute to and from work. We get along great, but I have no interest in him romantically. Last week, he held my hand on the way home. I didn’t want to be rude and was honestly shocked, so I just let him hold it because I didn’t know what to do. Now, he keeps holding my hand to and from work. I’m really uncomfortable. How do I

get this to stop without hurting him? — christine Khanna, chembur Dear christine, Be careful, if you don’t put your foot down soon, you’ll end up marrying the guy just so you don’t come across as rude. Hand holding can soon lead him to lean in for a kiss because your body language is leading him on. Unfortunately, you’ve let this go on

for too long. The more time you waste not telling him, the more you’ll complicate matters. The next time he attempts to reach for your hand, tell him you need to talk. Say that you like him as a friend, but don’t see a relationship with him. It’s likely he will be crushed, so be gentle. Send your questions to womansworld@afternoondc.in

It’s Halloween mixed with the entire world’s sewage system, mixed with cat poop, mixed with five-day-old soggy cabbage and teenage boy’s gym socks! And, he spits when he is talking!

“I just don’t know what to do! He is a lovely person and a good boss, but his breath and spit-talking is intolerable. And, being my boss, I can’t just tell him. Please help!”— Ms. XYZ a) Oh dear! This is tricky. You could leave a bowl of mints on your desk or order him lemon juice at intervals instead of coffee and tea. And, casually wipe your face when he talks and hope he takes the hint. So sorry for you! b) The subject of bad breath is very touchy for most. Leave him an anonymous but kindly worded note. c) Quit. Life is too short to be stunk up and spat on! LAST WEEK: Chatter box Kyra should pick Option A: Firstly, the most important person who has to like you is you. Yes, it is important for us to be socially acceptable but talking too much is not like being unkind or making other people feel bad about themselves. hild actor Arish Bhiwandiwala, who played the young Hrithik Roshan in the remake of Agneepath will now be seen as teen Akbar in the television show Bharat Ka Veer Putra-Maharana Pratap. He is replacing Sahil Deshmukh, who had to quit the show owing to ill-health. Arish, who is a first year commerce student of H.R. College, auditioned for the role of young Akbar and is happy to have bagged it. “It feels sad that Sahil is unwell and he couldn’t do the role. Akbar has always been my favourite historical character. I love the way he conducts himself. from all quarters and now he is planning to take up full-time acting. “I feel lucky that I got to do this film. Hrithik sir and our director Karan Malhotra were very helpful and sweet to me.

Shahbaz sir and Jaya Ma’m are helping me in every way possible”, he added.

TV TATTLE Dance India Dance

Starting Saturday, October 26 and airing every Saturday-Sunday at 9 pm on Zee TV, Dance India Dance Season 4 will follow a format similar to the original season where the 18 contestants are divided into three teams led by the masters Mudassar Khan, Shruti Merchant, and Feroz Khan. Episode after episode, the masters will groom and mentor their respective teams to face the trials of dance ahead of them. The contestants will be judged on their grasp in learning new dance forms, their versatility in lending themselves to diverse styles and the grace and charisma that sets a ‘dancing star’ apart from the dancers.

Injured rider

Aanand Goradiya was shooting a scene with his senapati for Maharana Pratap when there was an accident on the sets. Anand plays the treacherous and lecherous Rajput king Rao Sultan. His horse suddenly became violent and grabbed the leg of his senapati who was perched on his horse nearby. As if that was not enough, the horse rose on his hind legs and became restless as a result of which Aanand lost his balance and fell off the horse. The production house and technical staff rushed him to a nearby doctor and thankfully there were no bones broken but has a muscle tear on his lower back.

NSE India: CNX Nifty — Daily Market Report for: Thursday (October 24, 2013) (Based on the activity of the previous trading day) by Dominic Rebello

REVIEW OF THE PREVIOUS DAY: The Nifty fell marginally on Wednesday (October 23, 2013) a net 24.45 points (0.39%) and closed at the 6178 point level. The market opened up at the 6209 points level. It then rose further and registered the day’s high at the 6217 points level at 9.20 a.m. The index then declined sharply into the red and turned into a range bound movement until 1.52 p.m. It then declined further and registered the day’s low at the 6116 points level at 2.00 p.m. The index then rose and turned into a range bound movement until closing at the day. The Nifty witnessed a choppy session, moved in a range of 101 points and closed below the psychologically important 6200 points level. Sentiment was bearish and amongst the 50 Nifty stocks 33 were losers, 16 were gainers and 1 remained unchanged. Substantial selling was seen in realty, power and IT stocks, while buying was seen in capital goods, banking, consumer durables and FMCG stocks. TECHNICAL ANALYSIS: Volume: Volume (Qty shares) decreased 8.14%. This change is small and indicates a moderate participation by investors.

Market Breadth: Overall Market Breadth on the NSE was negative. Amongst all the traded stocks, 658 were gainers, 709 were losers and 77 remained unchanged.

Slow Stochastic Indicator: The Slow Stochastic Oscillator is in the over-bought zone. The Slow K line in the Stochastic Oscillator is above the slow D line (positive if it continues). RSI Indicator: The RSI is above the 60 level but is now declining (negative if it continues).

MACD Indicator: The MACD is above zero and is turned flat (positive if it rises). It is above its 9-day Average (positive).

ADX Indicator & DI Lines: The +DI line is above the –DI line but both lines are converging (negative if it continues). The ADX is flat while the Market Index is falling. No signal here.

Support Levels: For short-term traders the immediate main support is at the 5820 points level. The next support is at the 5692 points level. Resistance Levels: Immediate main resistance is at the 6223 points level. Next resistance is at the 6357 points level.

Pivot Point Analysis: For intra-day traders the support and resistance levels are calculated according to the pivot point theory and are: Pivot point = 6171 (This is the level where the trend is likely to change during intra-day). Support (1) = 6124. Support (2) = 6070. Resistance (1) = 6225. Resistance (2) = 6272.

OUTLOOK FOR TODAY: On Japanese candlestick patterns the index has formed a small black body candle with a long lower tail. A long lower tail indicates that sellers dominated trading and drove prices lower during the session. However by the end of the session, buyers resurfaced and pushed prices back. This indicates that buying support is emerging at lower levels. This candle also indicates that the indecisiveness amongst investors continues. The next candle formation will confirm whether the bias is towards the buy or sell side of the market. However, the index is above the 5, 15, 25 and 200 days moving averages and all the four averages are rising and also positively trended. Further, the velocity parameters too indicate strength. Both these indicate a positive bias. Investors are advised to hold long positions but with a strict stop loss at the 15-day average at the 6038 point’s level.

Work with strict stop losses on all positions

MOVING AVERAGES (TREND INDICATORS) The index: Is above its 5-day average (at 6164) Positive. Is above its 15-day average (at 6038) Positive. Is above its 25-day average (at 5982) Positive. Is above its 200-day average (at 5850) Positive. All the four averages are positively trended. Positive.

Overall Market Strength/Weakness: The indicators and oscillators discussed here are indicating a strong market but with a neutral bias.

Asian Paints reported a consolidated revenue growth of 18% to Rs 31.14bn. EBITDA at Rs 5.1bn was up% YoY as margins expanded by 190bps to 16.4%. PAT at Rs 3.27bn was up 36.7% YoY. Standalone business (decorative paints) reported revenue of Rs 25.3bn up 18.2%. EBITDA grew by 35.3% as margin expanded by 228bps to 18%. We estimate a volume growth of 15% during the quarter. Management indicated that growth in Tier II and III markets coupled with some Inventory stocking has resulted in a strong volume growth. Gross margin witnessed sharp increase driven by price increase taken in the domestic decorative business (4% cumulative beginning April 2013). The benefit of lower inventory cost and price hike resulted in a margin expansion. The recent price hike offsets the rupee depreciation and hence operating margins will continue to expand YoY in H2FY14. We continue to remain positive on Paint sector from a long term prospects. Management indicated that Paint industry has not witnessed any significant slowdown. Given the sustained growth in volumes coupled with expansion in margin expansion, we expect valuations to remain high. We have revised our estimate for FY14 and FY15 by 5% to factor in better volume growth. The stock trades at 39x FY14E EPS of Rs 13.2 and 31x FY15E EPS of Rs 16.3. We recommend an accumulate with a one year price target of Rs 570 (35x FY15E),

Religare calls a ‘Buy’ on JK Lakshmi Cement CMP: Rs. 68 Target Rs. 90

JKLC’s Q2FY14 results were ahead of estimates as margins surprised positively. Nevertheless, this was a weak quarter for the company with realisations down 7% QoQ, largely offsetting cost benefits. EBITDA/t at Rs 436 (RCMLe: Rs 392) was down by Rs 490 YoY/Rs 140 QoQ, leading to a 76% YoY drop in PAT. We cut FY14/FY15 earnings by 19%/20% on lower volume and margin forecasts and roll over to a Dec’14 TP of Rs 90. Maintain BUY as the weak performance and expansion delays are priced in. Lower realisations drive EBITDA/t lower: JKLC’s power/fuel and freight costs (per tonne) both fell by ~8% QoQ as power consumption declined to 72Kwh (vs. 5Kwh YoY) and fuel consumption fell to 729K.Cal/kg of clinker (738K.Cal/kg YoY). Despite these cost benefits, EBITDA/t fell by Rs 490YoY/Rs 140QoQ to Rs 436/t (est. Rs 392) largely driven by lower realisations, and the EBITDA margin contracted 10ppt YoY/ 284bps QoQ to 12.5%. Owing to the muted operating performance, PAT dropped 76% YoY to Rs 103mn. The tax rate came in lower at 12% due to MAT benefits. Maintain BUY: We cut our FY14/FY15 earnings estimates by 19%/20% on lower volume and margin assumptions and roll over to a Dec’14 TP of Rs 90 based on 4.5x one-year forward EV/EBITDA. We believe the weak operating performance and delay in capacity expansion are already reflected in valuations. With capex in place now, JKLC’s capacity is expected to more than double from 5.3mt to ~11.3mt by FY15-end which should aid volume growth over the next 2-3 years.

Sunidhi calls a ‘Buy’ on RS Software CMP: Rs. 151 Target Rs. 180

Valuation & Recommendation: RSSIL continues to put significant thrust on innovations and in building competencies through the Payments Lab and School of Payments. RSSIL has made fresh hiring of 53 candidates in Q2FY14 in order to ramp up its delivery systems. It is confident that given the improving market conditions and the potential growth in the electronic payments industry, RSSIL will consistently tread a high growth trajectory. RSSIL is one of global leaders in providing technology solutions to the electronic payments industry from India and this explains why it has outperformed the Indian software export industry growth in fiscal 2012-13 and reinforced its growth journey. RSSIL has built solutions for the introduction of new standards such as EMV (Europay, MasterCard and Visa) and emerging payment areas like mobile and contactless payments, while enhancing the ability of its clients to manage their legacy systems. The credible performance has only reinforced RSSIL’s commitment to ensure that this time around, it is fully capitalizing on the next wave of growth for the Indian companies with Indian IT industry expected to grow 3 times in the next 10 years. This coincides with the inflexion point for growth in the payments industry. At the CMP of Rs 148, the share is trading at a P/E of 4.3x on FY14E and 3.7x on FY15E. We reiterate BUY with an increased target price of Rs 180 in the medium term. Please send all business and corporate related mails to business@afternoondc.in

Responding to clarifications sought by the DoT, TRAI reiterated that the auction start price or the reserve price for spectrum in the 900 megahertz or MHz band in some key cities be cut by 60 %. It also suggested a 37 % cut in the reserve price for spectrum in the 1800 MHz band. Accessing of the overseas bond market by domestic companies and financial institutions had almost dried up completely since May and the HDFC Bank’s programme indicates revival of this cheap source of funds. OVL Pulls Out Of Brazalian Oilfield Auction

NGC Videsh Ltd, the overseas arm of state-owned Oil and Natural Gas Corp , pulled out of an auction of USD 184 billion oilfield in Brazil after it could not stitch an alliance to bid for the giant project. OVL was among the 11 companies shortlisted to bid for Brazil’s Libra pre-salt block, one of the world’s largest offshore oil discoveries. It however did not make a bid at the auction yesterday as it could not form a consortium with any of the other shortlisted companies, sources privy to the development said. The auction attracted just one bid from a consortium led by Anglo-Dutch oil major Shell, France’s Total and China PetroChina and its sister company Cnooc. Brazilian state-run energy company Petrobras is also part of the consortia which got the giant field at auction start price or the minimum price.

sset quality deterioration, shortage of capital, or slowing credit growth could undermine the BRICMT (Brazil, Russia, India, China, Mexico, and Turkey) banks’ credit quality, especially amid economic slowdown following years of strong credit growth, according to a recently published report by Standard & Poor’s Ratings Service titled “Credit FAQ: Can The Largest Emerging Markets Banking Systems Withstand Jitters About Economy And Financial Markets?. “In addition, we remain concerned about the rising household

debt burden, given still low, although increasing, GDP per capita and cyclicality of these major emerging market economies, said Standard & Poor’s credit analyst Cynthia Cohen Freue. The expectation of the U.S. Federal Reserve’s reversal of its loose monetary policy has hit most emerging markets, pushing financing costs higher and currencies lower, and reducing the pace of global and regional market issuance. In our view, the resulting global capital outflow will have varying effects on banks in the BRICMT nations.

If a man is unable to pull the skin on his penis to expose his glans penis, how does it affect his sexual performance? The head of the penis (glans penis) is the part of the penis that is most sensitive to sexual stimulation and has the most nerve endings (neuro-receptors). A man enjoys sexual stimulation better if his glans penis is uncovered by the foreskin during the sexual act. Ideally, the foreskin needs to get retracted on an erect penis, enough to expose the whole of glans penis. This may either happen on its own

Do you have any suggestions? If you are talking about casual sex, then the heart is not involved, with the result that there is a need to impress and score points because of a fear that you are being evaluated against others. If your girlfriend is also with you for a casual fling, then she could very possibly be ‘rating’ your performance. Some may make a commitment.

PISCES (February 19 - March 20): You may take over major assignment that requires full time effort to see it through. There is more fame than money to be gained. WASHOUT

MUMBAI | THURSDAY, OCTOBER 24, 2013 By Tapan Mohanta RANCHI: The fourth ODI between India and Australia was called off because of rains at the JSCA Stadium here. Chasing 296, India were 27 for no loss in 4.1 overs in when heavens opened up for the second time during the match. The match was stopped at 6.18 pm because of light drizzle which later intensified to frustrate both the teams. There was some hope in the middle as the rain had stopped after one hour and the groundsmen and super soppers were pressed into action. The mopping exercise by the groundsmen continued for more than one hour but the two onfield umpires took the call after inspecting the ground at 8.30pm. The match was called off after the umpires found out that the ground was too water logged to continue the proceedings. By virtue of the abandoned match, Australia continue to lead the seven-match series 2-1. The fifth ODI between the two

SPORTS sides will be played at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack on Saturday. India had begun their stiff chase on a positive manner with Shikhar Dhawan (14 not out) hitting three boundaries while Rohit Sharma (9 not out) struck one as India were going at 6.48 runs per over when the match was halted for the second time in the day. Light drizzle had interrupted the game for about 30 minutes when Australia were 28 for two after 7.2 overs. Earlier, Australia rode on a record 153-run partnership between George Bailey and Glenn Maxwell to recover from a jittery start and post a challenging 295 for eight. Skipper Bailey (98) and Maxwell (92) missed their respective centuries but ensured that Australia recover from a difficult 71 for four to 224 for five through the team's highest partnership against India for the fifth wicket. Brought in place of Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammad Shami's fiery first spell (6-1-213) ripped apart the Australian top order after India put the visitors into bat.

An avid traveller recalls his journeys

Sachin Tendulkar at a function at a suburban hotel on Wednesday.

By Neil Joshi

M

UMBAI: From what is known about the Indian master Sachin Tendulkar is his remarkable journey of scoring tons and tons of runs. The Mumbaikar and veteran of 198 Tests revealed another side of himself when he spoke of him being an avid traveller at a function in the city on Wednesday. He said as a cricketer he has travelled to many destinations in India and around the world but appreciated a lot what the country has to offer. “Till now cricket has allowed me to see various parts of the world and above all you appreciate various parts of India. India has such beautiful spots. I have travelled

How much ever I thank the people of the country and the well wishers it is not enough, I take this opportunity to thank you from the bottom of my heart for all the support. — SACHIN TENDULKAR

all across India and I have seen most of it and appreciate what our country has,” said Tendulkar who is the brand ambassador of the travel portal ‘Musafir’.

L

Tendulkar named in Wisden all-time World Test XI

ONDON: Retiring Indian batsman Sachin Tendulkar was today named in the Wisden all-time World Test XI. Tendulkar, who will retire from Test cricket after playing against the West Indies in his landmark 200th match in Mumbai next month, was named at his number four spot in the team announced to mark 150 years of the Cricketers' Almanack here. The team captained by legendary Australian batsman Don Bradman has four Englishmen, three West Indians, two Australians, one Indian and one Pakistani. Tendulkar's contemporaries like Brian Lara, Ricky Ponting and Jaques Kallis could not make it to the team, nor other Indian greats like Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev. Australian spin-legend Shane Warne and Pakistani fastbowling great Wasim Akram were the only two contemporaries of Tendulkar who made it to the World Test

He added that travel wasn’t just for fun but also to educate his children about the importance of various places and its significance. “My family are in a position to have two-three holidays in a year and sometimes they are without me. It is just about teaching them what India is all about and visit some really important spots. They have been to the Taj Mahal, Jallianwala Baug and the Golden Temple. So all these places have an ever lasting impression and it stays with you forever and this is what as a family we want to do and we will continue to do.” Tendulkar who is preparing to play his final Test series said that he has had very few vacations where cricket hasn’t been a part

XI. Tendulkar and Akram are the only two Asians named in the team. Jack Hobbs and WG Grace were included as openers, followed by Bradman and Tendulkar at number three and four, respectively. Destructive West Indian batsman Vivian Richards comes in at number five followed his countryman and legendary allrounder Garry Sobers. Englishman Alan Knott got the wicketkeeper's spot while the four remaining bowling slots went to Warne, Akram, West Indian fast bowling great Malcolm Marshall and Englishman Sydney Barnes. Wisden World XI: Jack Hobbs (England), W G Grace (England), Don Bradman (Australia, captain), Sachin Tendulkar (India), Vivian Richards (West Indies), Garry Sobers (West Indies), Alan Knott (England), Wasim Akram (Pakistan), Shane Warne (Australia), Malcolm Marshall (West Indies), Sydney Barnes (England).

of it and chose London as a place where he can share dual responsibilities but recollected his journey four years ago to Iceland where he felt close to nature. “Away from India, I like to spend time in London because I can practice and spend time with my family, so it is a combination of both. If ever I have to speak about my family holiday completely away from cricket, then it would be a memorable holiday in Iceland where I spent a week there. It was fantastic to be with nature. And the funnier side the credit card stayed in the pocket because there was nothing to shop. All of you are together and don’t disburse in various directions shopping around and that was a special holiday,” said Tendulkar.

South Africa ahead after Tahir wrecks Pakistan

D

UBAI: Leg-spinner Imran Tahir came to haunt the country of his birth, Pakistan, by claiming a maiden five-wicket haul to give South Africa an early control of the must-win second Test. The 34-year old finished with a career best 5-32 while fit-again paceman Dale Steyn took 3-38 to bundle Pakistan out for 99 all out in 36.4 overs at Dubai stadium before South Africa finished the day on 128-3. They lead by 29 runs and enjoyed a good day in their bids to level the two-Test series after losing the first game by seven wickets in Abu Dhabi last week. Graeme Smith was unbeaten on 67 and nightwatchman Steyn was three not out. Smith, who looked rusty in Abu Dhabi, hit spinner Saeed Ajmal for two consecutive boundaries to bring up his half-century as well as taking his team past Pakistan's total. In the morning session Pakistan's top-order batsmen were so dismal that number nine Zulfiqar Babar top-scored with 25 not out and opener Shan Masood made 21. Of the six boundaries in the innings, Babar hit three and Masood one. This is the 16th time that Pakistan were bowled out for below 100 in a Test innings. It brought back memories of Pakistan's same total against then world number one England at the same venue in 2012, although they went on to win the Test in the end. But a ruthless South Africa, now the world number one Test side, looked in no mood to concede the early advantage as they now look set for a big first innings lead. Smith and Dean Elgar, replacing Hashim Amla -- who failed to come back after returning home for the birth of his child -added 54 before Ajmal had Elgar for 23. Pakistan also removed opener Alviro Petersen for 26 and Jacques Kallis (seven) on a day when Tahir gave Pakistan a dose of their own spin medicine. Tahir, playing his first Test since November 2011, dismissed opener Shan Masood (21), Misbah-ul Haq (two) and Akmal (naught) off just 11 deliveries to leave Pakistan in tatters at 60-6 by lunch. Born and brought up in Pakistan, Tahir qualified to play for South Africa in 2011 after marrying a local girl but has since taken time to establish himself in a country not known for spinners. Steyn, cleared from a hamstring injury suffered on Sunday, gave no signs of discomfort as he dismissed opener Khurram Manzoor off the second delivery of the match and then had Younis Khan (10), on pitch which looked good for batting.

Imran Tahir finished with 5/32 as South Africa bundled out Pakistan for 99 on the first day in Dubai.

ative Knight is cut out for distance races. It has proved that more than once – and it has always won carrying top weight. It did not make it in the Mahindra Trophy race. Distance 3200 metres. Ideal distance for Native Knight. How come it lost the race? Is it possible it did not have the luck of the race? Did jockey Trevor not ride it properly? When the field came to home, Native Knight was in the rear. That was a mistake on the part of the jockey. He should have by then kept it at a striking distance. Rodeo which was heavily backed won in front. Trevor made his bid a split second too late and it lost just by a neck. Just by a neck! It should have easily won the race. Native Knight was the favourite in the race – 60 paise and Rodeo too was heavily backed. The odds on Native Knight went up surprisingly high – nearly 1.5. Native knight was not disgraced. Losing by a neck – thanks to faulty riding –

has not diminished the high calibre of the mighty knight. Racing in Pune has never been so competitive as in this season. There have been very few runaway wins. Favourites have won but not in all the races. As Mark Twain hit the nail on the head when he said “If all favourites win, there will be no racing”. Pesi Shroff Dallas Todywalla and Narendra Lagad have done exceedingly well. It does not matter who becomes the champion. The Red Mills award for racing champion will go to Pesi Shroff. He is way ahead of other trainers. This award is based not on the number of wins, but on points calculated on the basis courted by the sponsors. The Poonawalla family appears to be now more interested in running some of their horses – not only in Pune and Mumbai, but in other centres as well – in all classes of races. Dreams of You, owned by Dr. Cyrus S. Poonawalla, Mr. Adar C. Poonawalla, Mrs. Natasha A. Poonawalla and Villoo Poonawalla won the D.N. Zodge Plate. Trainer: Pesi Shroff.

Cornelian attracted a lot of attention in the Kojagiri Plate. It could however only place. The winner was a horse with a strange name — Pumba. Hay Day owned by the Thakur family available at 6 to 1 won the Pune Racing Journalists’ Trophy. Trainer: Imtiaz Sait. Burgundy Rose on which a lot of money came, faded away. On Friday, Viva Capri which had placed last time out won the Div II of the Ashwamedha Plate. Notable runner: Laurus Tikati. Silver Arrow, owned by Dr. Vijay Mallya and trained by Pesi Shroff won Jhonty Rhodes Plate with greatest of ease. The horse is trained by Pesi Shroff may make a splash in Mumbai where the season begins in less than a month hence. Another easy winner was Gerome in the Self Styled Plate. The horse is owned by K.N. Dhunjibhoy and Mr. B.M. Desai. Trainer: S.S. Habbu. Runs to remember: Gerome, You’re The Boss, Calypso Queen, Silver Arrow, Lorelleit, Cornelian, Native Knight.

My students assisted them (crew) while shooting, which took place at Balewadi (Range near Pune)," the former world number one air rifle shooter and multiple medallist at the Commonwealth Games and World Cups said. Asked what the show will exactly depict, Anjali said, "They will show

my childhood, how I practised, how I became a shooter and all." The initiative stands for empowerment of women so that they can take charge of their destinies and follow their dreams, she said. The seven-episode series will trace the journey of successful women like Anjali, producer Ekta Kapoor, Chhavi Rajawat, sarpanch of village Soda near Jaipur in Rajasthan to name a few. ANGALORE: Australian striker Sean Rooney struck twice to help Bengaluru FC beat Dempo Sports Club 3-1 in their Airtel ILeague encounter here. Siam Hangal scored the other goal for the home side while Clifford Miranda pulled one back for Dempo at the Bangalore Football Stadium. Bengaluru FC maintained their unbeaten record at home as they went to the top of the table with 13 points from five matches. On the other hand, the Goan side are struck on six points from as many matches. Bengaluru's Manipuri striker Hangal -- adjudged the Man- ofthe-Match -- opened the scoring for the hosts in the sixth minute with a superb volley from outside the box that beat a diving Dempo goalkeeper Subhashish Roy Chowdhury all ends up.

Rooney doubled the score in the 11th minute. Sunil Chhetri entered the box from the left flank and his right rooter was punched out by Subhashish only to find Rooney lurking at the edge of the box. Rooney made no mistake in placing the ball into the far corner of the net. Rooney scored his second goal of the match in the 61st minute to take his tournament tally to five goals when he made a run through the centre after receiving the ball from Darren Caldeira. With only the goalkeeper to beat, Rooney made no mistake as he slid the ball past Subhashish to make it 3-0 for the home side. Two minutes later, the visitors pulled one back, when Miranda's curling left footer from a free-kick beat the entire Bengaluru defence.

WENGER & TORRES ENDURE DIFFERING FORTUNES ON LANDMARK NIGHT

P

ARIS: Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger and Chelsea striker Fernando Torres enjoyed differing fortunes on the former's 64th birthday and the latter's 100th start for Chelsea in Champions League action. Arsenal went down to their first defeat since the opening day of the Premier League campaign, as last season's beaten finalists Borussia Dortmund beat them 2-1 at the Emirates Stadium. Olivier Giroud cancelled out Henrikh Mkhitaryan's opener before Polish striker Robert Lewandowski scored the winner, although he was fortunate to be on the pitch having elbowed Laurent Koscielny earlier in the second half. After three rounds of games, Dortmund top the Group F table on goal difference from Arsenal, while Napoli also joined them on six points after disposing of Marseille 2-1 in France. Wenger said he hadn't seen the elbowing incident clearly enough to comment but

accepted that his side had not been at their best. "We have to look at ourselves for not being mature enough in situations like that. If you can't win the game you shouldn't lose it," he said. His Dortmund counterpart Jurgen Klopp, who watched from the stands as he serves a touchline ban, was delighted with the result and joked about ruining Wenger's birthday. "I am sorry about this, really. That is a problem of the date. I have a birthday in June when there are no matches. I'm always on holiday!" MESSI RESCUES BARCA IN CHAMPIONS LEAGUE MILAN: Lionel Messi preserved Barcelona's unbeaten start to the Champions League by equalizing in a 1-1 draw at AC Milan while Arsenal's 100 percent record disappeared with a 2-1 home defeat to Borussia Dortmund in other marquee match. Atletico Madrid made it three

wins from three, thanks to a double from in-form striker Diego Costa in a 3-0 victory at Austria Vienna, leaving the Spanish side on the brink of the last 16 already to continue its brilliant start to the season. Chelsea claimed the performance of the night by crushing Schalke 3-0, with striker Fernando Torres also scoring twice to put the 2012 champions top of Group E. Back from a thigh injury, Messi scored from close range to cancel out Robinho's opener for Milan and keep Barca in charge of Group H on seven points, two ahead of the Italians. Robert Lewandowski grabbed an 82nd-minute winner for Dortmund, last season's beaten finalist, at Arsenal in Group F to bring the English team down to earth after a flying start to the Premier League and in Europe. They are joined in a three-way tie on six points by Napoli, which won 2-1 at Marseille to condemn

the French side to a third straight loss. There were also first wins of the group stage for Celtic and Zenit St. Petersburg while Basel drew 1-1 at Steaua Bucharest. Milan and Barca were meeting in Europe's top competition for the seventh time in three seasons, so it was perhaps no surprise to see the teams cancel each other out. There was no shortage of stars on show at the San Siro and two of them combined for Milan's opener, Robinho exchanging passes with Kaka before slotting past Victor Valdes. However, Milan has never been able to handle Messi, the Argentina forward has now scored six times against the Italians, and he equalized after collecting Andres Iniesta's pass, evading Kevin Constant and shooting into the bottom corner. The teams meet again in two weeks' time, with Barcelona knowing a victory would put them on 10 points and close to the knockout stage.

Tendulkar’s retirement disappoints F1 driver Rosberg N

EW DELHI: Formula One driver Nico Rosberg may not be a cricket fan but even the Mercedes racer is sad, along with billion of Indians worldwide, at the retirement of veteran batsman Sachin Tendulkar. "I heard he is retiring. It is a great pity, especially for the Indian public. I met him last year when I was here for the race. He came across as a true F1 fan," Rosberg said ahead of the Indian Grand Prix this weekend. Talking about cricket, Rosberg said: "The game is not popular in Germany and even in Monaco where I stay now. I have tried following it but I don't really like it. I love football but the thing is I am not really good at it," the German said during a promotional event for Puma here. Speaking about his banter with

Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh, who is also promoting the same sports and lifestyle brand, Rosberg said: "Yuvi and I are having some chats on Twitter these days. He seems like a fun guy. I hope to see him during the racing weekend." Yuvraj had tweeted: "You guys wanna meet German racing star Nico Rosberg? A few of you just may be lucky enough...Join the race." Rosberg replied saying: "would have been great to race against you as well! Maybe next time". though the JPSI, promoter of the event, has a five-year contract with Formula One. "I think it (Indian Grand Prix) will come back. They have put in great efforts to put this track together. It is such an impressive track. The F1 calender is changing every year. The fans would be missing the action but I am sure it will come back," Hamilton told reporters on the sidelines of a promotional event. "Hopefully it will become part of culture here in India and lot more people would be enjoying it," he added. The race has already been dropped from next year's schedule. The third season of the Indian Grand Prix will be held at the Buddh International circuit this weekend and the 28-year-old Hamilton said he is itching to give his best on this track.

KARACHI: Clouds of uncertainty continued to hover over Pakistan cricket with the Election Commission now contemplating to challenge the judgment of Islamabad High Court (IHC) ordering them to conduct elections for the post of PCB chairman in the Supreme Court. According to sources, the Election Commission yesterday reviewed the orders by the IHC judge, Shaukat Siddiqui directing them to conduct elections for the PCB Chairman's post on November 2nd. "The ECP has reached the conclusion that under the constitution of the country it is only duty bound to fulfill five responsibilities and this does not include conducting elections of the cricket board," the source said. He said the ECP would in a few days most likely challenge the IHC orders in the higher court which could immediately lead to a suspension of the PCB elections on November 2.

Ajay enters second round; Kashyap, Guru lose in France

PARIS: Indian shuttler Ajay Jayaram notched up a straight-game win over Japan's Kazumasa Sakai but his compatriots Parupalli Kashyap and RMV Gurusaidutt failed to cross the first hurdle in the French Super Series here. World number 25 Ajay rode on his smashes and better net play to get across Kazumasa 21-16 21-11 in a 38minute men's singles match. For Kashyap, it was always an uphill task to tame the top seed and world number one Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia and the Indian did play his heart out in the first game but the Malaysian still prevailed 22-20 21-12 at the end of the 37minute battle. Gurusaidutt, however, could not put up a fight in the first game but he tried to make a comeback in the second before going down 9-21 14-21 to Chen Yuekun of China in another first round match at the Stade Pierre de Coubertin here.

Johan Botha passes biomechanical analysis MELBOURNE: South African off-spinner, Johan Botha, who also plays for Adelaide Strikers, has passed the biomechanical analysis of his bowling action and is free to continue playing in CA Competitions, Cricket Australia (CA) said. Botha was cited by umpires Simon Fry, Michael Graeme-Smith and Geoff Joshua in the RYOBI CUP match between South Australia and Victoria at Bankstown Oval on October 4. Following the report, he was required to undergo biomechanical testing of his action at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra last Wednesday.
