According to ACB sources, the complainant runs an imitation jewellery business and, last year, his son was booked by Azad Maidan police

When the complainant approached the court for quashing the case, he was told that the police officer in the case has not submitted the charge sheet which is mandatory. On learning that PSI Bhat was the investigation officer in the case, the complainant approached Bhat, who demanded Rs.5,000 to file the charge sheet. On February 20, the complainant went to meet Bhat for the second time and requested him to file the charge sheet as his son has to go abroad for higher studies, but Bhat again demanded Rs.5,000. Builder’s judicial custody extended by 14 days EOW has more questions for Nitin Mehta, who sold off 19 flats already belonging to other buyers By Philip Varghese
A
lmost a week after the Sessions Court allowed an intervention application filed by an original complainant opposing the bail application filed by a builder who was arrested for allegedly duping seven people by selling off their flats to others buyers, the court on Monday extended the judicial custody by 14 days. This comes a week after the complainant Dinesh Mirani had filed the intervention application opposing builder Nitin Mehta's bail. The EOW had arrested Mehta for allegedly cheating people by falsely selling off 19 flats which had already been sold earlier to the seven complainants. Mehta was the first person to be arrested in the cheating case is in judicial custody at present and no bail has been granted. The EOW would seek further custody of the accused depending on the evidence they would gather. The victims had approached the EOW and on July 31, 2013, a case of cheating and criminal breach of trust was lodged against Mehta and the concerned people who cheated the victims. The total
cost of the 19 flats sold to the seven people was approximately Rs.1.50 crore. Mehta was arrested under section 406 (Punishment for criminal breach of trust), 420 (Cheating) and 34 of IPC. During the hearing on Monday, Mehta was produced before the court via video-conferencing. “The accused was produced in the court through video-conferencing and has extended the judicial custody. Mehta has sold the refuge area of the buildings. So we are opposing the bail as the accused has cheated us and earned double the amount of money or more by selling one flat to two or more buyers. In doing this, the accused also violated the Maharashtra Ownership of Flats (MOF) Act, in which the builder or the developer has to give the possession of the flat within the mentioned time given in the allotment letter or the agreement. In 1995, Mehta, builder/developer of Anamika Real Turf Pvt. Ltd., started the construction of a building on private land in Borivali (E). Prospective buyers purchased the flats from Mehta but have not got the flats till today”.
we have decided that unless our demands are considered seriously and they are fulfilled we will not call off the strike.” Vaykole also informed that they At GT hospital 16 out of 293 nurses were on duty At Cama there were 3 out 288 nurses At St George's saw 26 out of 225 reporting And J.J. corporating suggestions made by the Union Finance Ministry. The government also withdrew an ordinance in this regard. The Co-operation Minister Harshvardhan Patil said, “An important provision has been included in the bill, whereby immovable property acquired in the course of money lending will be returned after a thorough inquiry by the district registrar. Further, it will be binding on the money lender to keep accounts and furnish copies to the assistant registrar.”“No money lender will accept from debtors any article as a pawn, pledge or security for a loan, without giving him a plain
signed receipt for the same. It will also be mandatory for the money lender to maintain duplicates of such receipts in a separate register. At the same time, no money lender will receive from a debtor or intending debtor, any sum by way of compounded interest on a loan advanced or intended to be advanced or any sum by way of interest, at a rate higher than the rate fixed by the government. This provision has been included because in certain cases, the government found that money lenders were charging rates of interest of up to 12 per cent”, he added.

Slum dwellers launch agitation against MBMC By Suresh Golani
H
undreds of evicted slum dwellers, led by their local BJP leader, Narendra Mehta, launched a massive agitation against the MiraBhayandar civic administration, and the NCP-led ruling governance on Monday. The agitation, launched in the form a peaceful 'morcha' outside the main administrative building of the Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC), was in protest of civic apathy and corruption, which had led to a delay in the implementation of the much awaited Basic Services for Urban Poor (BSUP) scheme. A Rs. 279.55 crore project had been approved by the Central Government authorities in 2009, to construct 4,136 flats as a part of a package to rehabilitate two slum clusters – Janta Nagar (3665 flats)
and Kashi-Church (471 flats). Ironically, even before land acquisition and proper transit facilities, the MBMC appointed four contractors for the construction of 23 ground plus eight buildings, which has now resulted into a cost escalation of Rs. 100 crore. Launching a scathing attack on the civic administration and the NCP-led rulers, BJP corporator Anil Bhosale said, "Shun Gandhigiri, forcefully occupy MMRDA flats," says Mehta while instigating agitating slum dwellers. Blaming political bias and corruption behind the extended delay in the implementation of the BSUP project, Mehta said, “Repeated pleas and agitations have fallen to deaf ears, and now, forcing your way into the flats under the Rental Housing Scheme is the only option.” The State Government authorities hadgiven their nod to the proposal mooted by the MBMC for leasing out 50 per cent of the units for transit accommodation under the MMRDA’s ambitious Rental Housing Scheme (RHS) at a price of Re.1 per square meter for a period of thirty years. The MBMC in turn will utilize the flats ad-measuring 160 square feet, as transit settlements for people residing in dilapidated structures in the twin-city.
"Around 2,500 tenements have been demolished and the residents are still waiting to be rehabilitated. Their only fault is that they are poor. The governance is least interested in their woes and is interested only in kickbacks.” Under the BSUP scheme, the Centre will be contributing 50 per cent of the funds, the state will contribute 30 per cent, the MBMC will put in 9 per cent, and the rest will be borne by the beneficiary. “Believing the authorities, locals extended their cooperation for the eviction drive. However, after moving out nearly two years ago, they have been living like vagabonds," alleged Mira Devi Yadav. The agitation was withdrawn after a delegation of BJP leaders met the Additional Municipal Commissioner, Bharat Shitole, who assured that the process would be sped up.
Goofy goof-ups again Continued from pg 1 « Bachelor of Commerce (TYBCom) also had errors. Padma Deshmukh, Exam Controller, MU, said, “We have not received any complaint so far, but if all the students complain to the examination department regarding this, we will work upon it as soon as possible.”

On the basis of this complaint, the ACB laid a trap and nabbed Bhat and the middleman, Shaikh, while the bribe was being accepted. Woman jumps to death from bridge with 5-year-old son By Suresh Golani
I
n a shocking incident, a 28-year-old woman jumped into the creek from the road- over bridge in Bhayandar, carrying her five-year-old son. The bodies were recovered from the shores of the creek in Bhayandar (west) at about 5 pm on Monday. According to the police, the woman who has been identified as
Yashodha Hoshiyarsingh Rana (28), apparently jumped from the bridge (connecting Bhayandar and Naigaon) along with her son, Vikas (5). Rane is a resident of Shubam Apartment in the Laxmibai Cheddha Nagar, Nallasopara (east). The police have recovered a suicide note in which she mentioned that nobody is responsible for her suicide but herself. The suicide note
also carried the mobile number of her husband who works at a private educational institution. Interestingly, as per the claims of her husband, Yashodha had left the house at about 11 am on Monday, leaving behind a similar suicide note, following which he had contacted his father-inlaw, who is a resident of Silver Park in Mira Road, police said. Not ruling out foul play, the
Bhayandar police have sent the bodies for an autopsy. “As of now, we can’t ascertain the exact cause behind the extreme step, but preliminary investigations definitely point towards “harassment by in-laws” angle in the case. We are in the process of recording statements of all relatives and neighbours,” revealed an investigating officer. Further investigations are on.

he newly promoted Additional Commissioner of Police (West Region) Milind Bharambhe has recommended the Vakola house breakin case, in which robbers decamped with goods worth over Rs. 90 lakh, to the office of the Mumbai Police Commissioner for the Detection of the Month. Talking to the ADC, Bharmbhe said, “Our detection staff from Vakola police solved the case within 24 hours. Since this detection is the first of its kind, I am sending the report to the Commissioner Office to recommend it as the Detection of the Month. However, if the Senior Police Inpector from Vakola police station is to be believed, two more arrests in the case are still pending and are likely be made soon. According to him, these accused have 50 per cent of the loot with them. On February 14, NRI businessman Ramesh Premjibhai Badiyani and his wife found their Santacruz house burgled and their valuables including two kilos of gold jewellery,
cash, diamonds and foreign currency missing from the locker. When PSI Samir Bhujbal and his staff visited the spot, they found footprints on a dusty window pane, indicating that the thieves had entered the locked house from there. The detection staff of Vakola police examined the footprints and interrogated several people who they considered to be possible suspects, including the couple's driver Sumit Ramtej Pandey, who had been working for them for the past three months. A pair of shoes found at Pandey's shanty matched the footprints found at the crime scene. Apparently Pandey burgled the couple's residence with the help of a carpenter, Hasmukh Shivbalak Sharma – who cut open the window grill to enable Pandey to enter – and auto rickshaw drivers Arvind Mishra and Afzal, who are absconding. After a sustained interrogation, Pandey confessed to the crime and was arrested along with Sharma who had aided him in the robbery, while his father Ramtej Pandey and Afzal's wife Haazra Bano Ansari were also declared as accused in the case.

he entire opposition in the state legislature yesterday shouted slogans against Governor K. Sankaranarayanan accusing him of protecting corrupt ministers, leading to a pandemonium in the joint session of the legislature. The Shiv Sena-BJP members raised slogans like 'Governor go back', and 'make Maharashtra toll free' when the Governor delivered his speech to the joint session of both houses on the first day of the fourday session of the legislature. The Governor was targeted in view of his refusal to sanction CBI to prosecute former Chief Minister Ashok Chavan in the Adarsh housing society scam. In his 40-minute speech, Sankaranarayanan listed achievements of the Prithviraj Chavan-led government in the field of infrastructure, health, egovernance, industrial investment, social sector to uplift lives of the poor and downtrodden, and steps taken to tide over an acute drought situation. He said that 4,484 kms road length out of 2.42 lakh kms has been developed by the PWD, Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation and National Highway Authority on Built Operate and Transfer (BOT) basis. So far, 67 toll plazas have been closed. legislature, the ruling Congress-NCP alliance tabled the motion in the legislative council yesterday. Not satisfied with the government's move, the opposition staged a walk-out from the legislative council. Raising a point of order, senior Sena member Diwakar Raote contended that since the house is to debate the Governor's address in the July session the motion should be tabled then rather than in this session. His demand was supported by senior BJP member Pandurang Phundkar and Jayant Patil (PWP). Senior Sena member Ramdas Kadam argued that the tabling of the motion itself was unconstitutional and wanted the government to extend the session. However, senior NCP member Hemant Takle tabled the motion of thanks which was seconded by Ashok Jagtap (Congress). However, the opposition failed to grill the government on the floor of the house over the tabling of the Supplementary Demands for 2013-14. Once a great University

The trouble is, even its own departments are expected to pay Rs 50,000 each they time use the facility If you do an examination, don't be surprised if Mumbai University manages to announce that you have failed – and also passed. Expect roll number goof ups You can appear for an examination, but that's no guarantee that Mumbai University will consider you have been present, so have a back-up plan in place for your immediate future. And that is just January, 2014, the last mentioned item being our latest story carried today. Mumbai University, established in 1857 as the University of Bombay with John Wilson at the helm of affairs as Vice Chancellor, has always been an educational institution to aspire to. However, in the last decade and a half, with political interference in affairs both student and academic becoming more and more visible, the rot has emerged and taken such a malevolent form as to cause all except the stout-hearted to quail. Ironically, in the last year, Mumbai University has actually been listed at No. 5 in the top 100 universities in India by India Today. It is also perceived as one of the better universities in other well-regarded ratings. Yet the repeated tales of sheer mismanagement, short-sightedness and a bewildering lack of concern for the consequences of such actions has taken its toll. In fact, the state of the much-vaunted Kalina Campus is, in some aspects, so dire that it has caused students to give up plans to pursue a Masters degree altogether! Against this background, Vice-chancellor Rajan Welukar himself faces an allegation that he is not qualified to hold the position and a petition to this effect will be heard on Thursday. So low is morale in this regard, however, that it is doubtful that radical changes will be made at the top. All we can do is wait and watch.

NDIA may not be coming apart at the seams but the polity is. Union Ministers are quarrelling among themselves. Feuds of bureaucrats are coming out in the open. Even intelligence agencies, the Intelligence Bureau and the Central Bureau of Investigation, are at loggerheads. Understanding between bureaucracy and the rulers has been reduced to trivialities. So much so that Finance Minister P. Chidambaram tells a top official to improve his English and the official, in turn, complains to his minister. On top of it comes the manner in which the bill to bifurcate Andhra Pradesh was passed by the Lok Sabha. The Lok Sabha television channel, showing the proceedings, was stopped from telecasting live which negates the claim of transparency. MPs in favour of a united Andhra Pradesh were not allowed to participate in the debate because as many as 17 of them had been ousted from the house a couple of days earlier when they, including the Congress ministers, were making the passage of the bill impossible.
Violation of the Constitution I am concerned over the precedent the Congress has set and the way the Speaker went along. Tomorrow if the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) comes to power and decides to have a legislation to put restrictions on the minorities, the party has only to point out that the then ruling Congress had suspended the basic norms of parliamentary democracy. For nearly 50 days, there was the government of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) exposing the status quo governance which the two main parties, the Congress and the BJP, had perpetrated in the last three decades. In a way, the AAP too has become a regional party as supreme in Delhi as are Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress in West Bengal and Naveen Patnaik's Biju Janata Dal (BJD) in Odisha. Indeed, politics of identity is the biggest danger to the democratic governance. And this in no way is minimising the harm the BJP is doing to the pluralistic ethos inherited from the days of freedom struggle. Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi is getting large crowds by appealing to the Hindus to imbibe Hindu nationalism. Muslims are justifiably feeling insecure because the soft kind of Hindutva is contaminating more and more people. To check this dangerous trend, the

Congress is too weak and too clueless to show mirror to the nation. Regional parties feel that they can fill the space vacated by the Congress. Probably, they can but it will be at the expense of India's unity. The Constitution which binds all parts of the country together is being violated by some regional parties both in letter and spirit. There is no option to the federal structure which the constituent assembly cherished and enshrined in the Constitution. Odisha is a typical example of how the Indian polity works. The state is federal in character but dynastic in rule. It seldom defies the central government, however autocratic or arrogant in its posture at times. But chief minister Naveen Patnaik's rule is personal and he follows the footprints of his father, the late Biju Patnaik who governed in capricious and corrupt manner. He is still remembered because he gave identity to Oriyas who even today are fighting for a place under the sun. Naveen continues to remind people of his father's legacy. I saw during my visit to Bhubaneswar hoardings all over the city with Biju Patnaik's finger pointing towards Naveen as if he was reminding
BETWEEN THE LINES Kuldip Nayar that his successor was his son. (There were also hoardings carrying only the photo of Rahul Gandhi without his mother, Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on either side of Naveen.) Just as Sukhbir Singh Badal in Punjab, Akhilesh Yadav in UP or Farooq Abdullah in Jammu and Kashmir, Naveen Patnaik's parentage is his asset. The polls in democracy are only up to elections. Subsequently, people cease to count during the five-year tenure
ne day, the Buddha sat down in the shade of a tree and noticed how beautiful the countryside was. Flowers were blooming and trees were putting on bright new leaves, but among all this beauty, he saw much unhappiness. A farmer beat his ox in the field. A bird pecked at an earthworm, and then an eagle swooped down on the bird. Deeply troubled, he asked, "Why does the farmer beat his ox? Why must one creature eat another to live?" During his enlightenment, the Buddha found the answer to these questions. He discovered three great truths. He explained these truths in a simple way so that everyone could understand them. 1. Nothing is lost in the universe The first truth is that nothing is lost in the universe. Matter turns into energy, energy turns into matter. A dead leaf turns into soil. A seed sprouts and becomes a new plant. Old solar systems disintegrate and turn into cosmic rays. We are born of our parents, our children are born of us. We are the same as plants, as trees, as other people, as the rain that falls. We consist of that which is around us, we are the same as everything. If we destroy something around us, we destroy ourselves. If we cheat another, we cheat ourselves. Understanding this truth, the Buddha and his disciples never killed any animal.
AAP should have economic agenda What surprised me was that there was not even a hiss of AAP in the state. I thought that Odisha which has no opposition worth the name would be an ideal place for AAP. The party appears to have not gone beyond Delhi, western UP, Haryana and parts of Rajasthan. No doubt, its birth and success in Delhi evoked a tinge of idealism. But then Arvind Kejriwal became synonymous for the party. He did not allow anyone else to grow. In fact, some of his antics have doused the aspirations of the intelligentsia which saw in him an alternative. Thank god, some other names who will contest the Lok Sabha elections have come out. They should underline the need for a collective leadership. Dozens of NGOs, with more enviable record than Kejriwal, are distant from the AAP. They should be persuaded to join the party which is, in fact, a platform for "thousands of mutinies" raging in the country. The AAP, however, needs to come out with its economic agenda because people have essentially voted against the Congress and the BJP. The AAP has done well in exposing the central government on the price of natural gas. Even when the private company had signed a contract to purchase gas for $2.5 But till 2017, the price has been raised to $8 But. It is obvious that Petroleum Minister Veerappa Moily, who has defended the increased price, must be mixed up with the scam, another in the Manmohan Singh regime, left with two months in tenure. Corruption looks like becoming the poll issue. The Congress with numerous scams will be the target. Per force, the party has made communalism the main issue. Both corruption and communalism have to be confronted with a plank of cleanliness and pluralism. The AAP can plug these lines, provided it stays together.

He is worse because he has eliminated leading politicians from his party methodically. He has thus become indispensible. Dos and don'ts for skipper M.S. Dhoni FIRST of all a captain should not depend on toss and pitch to win matches. He should have a clear game plan. Instead of standing as a keeper and dropping catches, let Dhoni marshal mid-on and midoff, so that he can guide his lethargic bowlers. Team India could play to its strength and two spinners in the side could have resulted in an easy win at Wellington. With substantial first innings lead we could have pressed hard for a win at least on the fourth day by ringing bowling changes. Passengers in the side should be packed off and not tried and tested again and again; Dhoni should bat up in the order like McCullum. He should follow five bowlers formula and not think of eight batsmen in the side. Team India should learn to bat second innings well as most of the
matches in India are decided by the first innings lead at the domestic level matches. Captain should insist for fast wickets at least in 20 centres in India. Pace bowlers should be persisted with first 50 overs in Ranji, Duleep, Irani and other competitive level games. A captain has to have the nerve of a gambler, patience of a saint and the mind of psychiatrist; Dhoni is just a beginner as far as captaincy is concerned. — C.K. Subramaniam, Sanpada
IN the past when Mahendra Singh Dhoni did achieve home wins and we used to call him Captain Courageous, Captain Marvel and Captain Cool, he has made fools of cricket fans in India with his unimaginative captaincy. If we lost to have "high speed wireless broadband service" in all its 18,000 villages, which is an enviable record. Forbes Magazine rated Ahmedabad as the fastest growing city in India and third in the world, then we appreciate the Governance of Gujarat Government. But still blame game goes on by people who cannot digest the development in Gujarat under Narendra Modi who has achieved all these and much more during his reign as the chief minister.
an overseas series, we can say it was ill luck or lack of experience etc. By losing matches again and again under overseas conditions he proved that he is still a beginner as far as captaincy is concerned. He should involve himself and involve the team members to form a strategy to achieve an action plan and work on it with grit and determination. By standing behind the stumps he loses the chance of interacting with his boys and thus losing the chance of passing on valuable tips to them. As we do not have a pair of tearaway fast bowlers, we have to attack with medium pace at both ends. Over and above we are compelled to select a slow medium pacer in the side only to count upon his experience. The old warhorse will have to struggle to keep his place first combine by another 15-16 seats, making it a record 40 odd MPs from the State, the highest in the country.

Daily commute gets better COMMUTINg from home to office or business place every day is also considered as official time and many people spend their timings for travelling either by train, car, taxi, autos, BEST buses and other local transport say nearly 1 hour 30 minutes in the morning and one to two hours in the evening. After considering this, a man nearly works either in office, business place or any other business, he works nearly 8 hours + 3 hours i.e. we can say that at least 12 to 13 hours a day. Life of a Mumbaikar is so busy that he cannot give much time to his family and it is very tiresome for every person after putting so much effort for commuting from home to office every day. Union Govt's secularism AS per a news item appearing in a vernacular daily, the Union Govt is appointing a Commission to explore the avenues for granting equal opportunities in various fields for the Muslim community. As a matter of fact, the decision to that effect was reportedly arrived at during the tenure of the UPA 1 itself. And what can be a more opportune time for the announcement of this "secular" measure than the occasion of the Lok Sabha polls in 2014? Nevertheless, such a step also raises a pertinent question, viz. are the existing provisions under the Constitution totally powerless to guarantee equal scope for all, irrespective of one's caste, creed or community; so as to necessitate this drastic move? — Arun Malankar, Santacruz

ARVIND Kejriwal is honest and he sure has lot of followers who look upon him to root out corruption from our political system. However his style of politics of late has become a political gimmick and I wonder how that would make a change in our country. Sending letters to Modi and Rahul Gandhi against Mukesh Ambani on gas pricing would hardly serve any purpose or for that matter distributing the same to the public. oiled, scrambled, poached, fried, soft-boiled, baked, whipped... there are dozens of egg-citing (sorry! We couldn’t resist) ways to eat the humble egg. People around the world agree, serving this protein filled food for breakfast, lunch and dinner. So, we're egging you on to start your egg trail by giving you some delicious dishes to salivate over, telling you about the benefits and helping you sort through your eggs to find the best one before you crack it open.
Scotch EggS: EngliSh One of the most common types of eggs served in the UK are Scotch eggs. They're also commonly served as a snack and while they're deep fried (so not healthy), they're absolutely delicious. A hard boiled egg is covered in meat and then breaded and deep-fried. health rating: *

huEvoS RanchERoS: MExican While most people think of it as filled with delicious Tex-mex flavourings, it's actually a pretty humble dish, traditionally served for breakfast in Mexico. It's essentially just fried eggs but what makes it different is that it's served on tortillas and covered in salsa. health rating: ***
Egg MaSala FRy: indian Some people serve this as a thick curry, but you also get it 'dry' which means it's coated with a thick red gravy that includes tomatoes, chili, coriander and garam masala. It's made with whole or roughly chopped boiled eggs. health rating: ****
Salli PaR EEdu: PaRSi Parsis have so many egg based dishes, so it's next to impossible to pick just one. While akuri (a runny scrambled mixture with masalas and chopped tomatoes, chilies, onions and coriander) is perhaps one of the most famous, a common and increasingly underappreciated dish has to be salli par eedu. This is salli cooked in a pan, with a fried egg broken over it and is served with a dash of aromatic spices, or simply a sprinkle of salt and pepper. health rating: ***
chakchouka: algERian You probably know this as Shakshuka and you may think it originated in Israel. It's a common dish from Algeria but it has recently become a staple dish in an Israeli breakfast. The soft, poached eggs in this dish are covered in tomato based sauce that can be quite spicy. health rating: *****

Play it Safe There's an old Russian proverb that tells us, “Love and eggs are best when they are fresh.” We agree, because if you eat bad eggs, you could end up with salmonella, that involves severe diarrhea, vomiting and dehydration. See how to tell a good egg from a bad one: appearance: Buy the freshest eggs and don't eat any that look dirty or are leaking. the water test: If you are unsure whether or not the eggs are fresh, put them in a bowl of water. If they sink to the bottom, they are fresh. If they float on the top, throw them out immediately. Cook it right: You kill all the salmonella when you cook it right. So, ensure that the white and yolk are both firm up when you take the egg off the heat. If your recipe does call for raw eggs or eggs that aren't cooked all the way through, such as Hollandaise sauce or stiff egg whites in a mousse, then make sure you use fresh eggs. Scrub up: Salmonella can also breed in pans or bowls. So, scrub any utensils that come in contact with eggs.

We chanced upon some of the world's most disgusting egg dishes and just had to share: Century eggs or thousand year eggs: Before you freak out, no, they aren't exactly that old. The yolk is a slimy grey whereas the white looks like dark rum. This Chinese delicacy is made by preserving eggs in a mixture of clay, ash, lime and rice. They were created around 600 years ago, when someone found eggs floating in slaked lime and tasted and modified them to make these eggs! Balut: Balut is the fertilised embryo of a duck. It’s fertilised so you can see the underdeveloped chick — you don't have too look too closely to identify it. However, in Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam it’s an aphrodisiac and a protein-rich snack. Virgin eggs: These eggs are made by soaking them in the urine of young boys from the Zhejiang Province of China and are considered to be a spring delicacy. After the urine is collected in buckets placed outside school classrooms, the eggs are then boiled in it. If that wasn't bad enough, the shells are cracked for the liquid to seep in.
The Japanese are famous for Bento boxes and these boxes are not complete without Tamagoyaki,

health BenefitS of eggS reduces breast cancer: Surprisingly, not many people know about this one. A study by Harvard University in 2003, found that eating eggs as an adolescent reduces chances of suffering from breast cancer as an adult. Two years later another study showed that women who ate six eggs a week reduced their chances of suffering from breast cancer by 44%. The choline found in eggs is said to reduce your risk of breast cancer by 24% said another 2008 study conducted by the University of North Carolina. One egg contains 125.5mg of choline, which is about a quarter of your daily choline requirement. helps your eyesight: According to a study, eating eggs helps reduce macular degeneration — a leading cause for blindness in
people above the age of 50. Lutein and zeaxanthin, both of which are found in eggs, help with this. weight watcher: If you thought eggs were rich and fattening, you should know that they actually help you watch your weight. A study conducted by Rochester Center for Obesity Research found that eating eggs for breakfast helps you reduce your calorie intake throughout the rest of the day by 400 calories or more — which translates to a kilo of weight you could lose per month just by having eggs for breakfast. your daily dose of vitamins: Eggs are very rich in the essential vitamins you need to keep your body healthy. Vitamin B12 is vital for producing red blood cells, while the vitamin A content is great for your eyes and good for growth in children. Vitamin B2 which is also present, helps your body break down food into actual energy and helps fight free radicals that cause tissue and cell damage.

So Beautiful!
Now that you know how eggs are doing your insides a world of good, here are some ways you can nourish your skin and hair as well. Shiny hair: If you feel like your hair is flat, eggs can help. They are rich in proteins similar to those found in your hair. Add a tablespoon of olive oil to the egg and apply to your hair for 20 minutes. anti-wrinkles: Egg whites help reduce the prominence of wrinkles and stop new ones from forming. Mix an egg white with water and wash your face with it. oil control: Egg whites also help with oily skin. Mix an egg white with a tablespoon of cornflower and apply it to your face. Let it dry and then wash it off for skin that is visibly less oily. moisturise: Egg yolks are rich in vitamin A and add moisture to your skin. They also help fight acne. Apply some on your face and wash off with cool water to get best results.

thirsty or hungry?
Ever wonder why you sometimes feel like snacking a mere hour after eating a full lunch? It could be a sign of thirst and not hunger. Dev Goswami & Shirley Mistry give the theory a whirl
C
raving a burger a few hours after you've eaten a full meal could mean one of two things: either you have a raging appetite, or you are thirsty. Yes, you read that right. Studies show, that more often than not, it is thirst masquerading as hunger. A popular theory suggests that when you’re hungry, you must sip some water slowly, over the course of five to seven minutes and then wait for 20 minutes. If you still feel hungry, eat a small snack, if not, you know you were simply thirsty and it had nothing to do with hunger. We put it to the test.
>> Before you indulge your cravings, drink water to see if you’re feeling thirsty or hungry
“it worked!” After reading up on this theory for a bit, I realised that I did experience some hunger pangs that were hard to reason with. Surely I couldn't be hungry enough to polish off a bag of chips and a wedge of cheese after eating an entire meal? So, I consciously decided to start sipping on water the next time a hunger pang made itself felt. While it did work on a lot of occasions, sometimes, it was just inexplicable hunger. What I have also noticed is that drinking a glass of water around 30 minutes before a meal also reduces my hunger and fills me up faster. Moreover, I find that my appetite is more easily satiated and I overeat on fewer occasions. — shirley Mistry
« healthy combinations: olives + tomatoes Continuing with our healthy food combinations, Rhea Dhanbhoora tells you why the Italians got it right when they added healthy olives and juicy tomatoes to their pizzas
T
he combination is not new to people who love pizza, salsa and Italian food, but if you're the type of person who picks the olives out of their pizza and skips the tomatoes in their pasta, you should read this article. Tomatoes on their own are incredibly rich in a cancer-fighting chemical known as lycopene. The carotinoid pigment is a nutrient that you must include in your diet and it's also found in carrots, papaya and guava (most red or pink coloured fruits and vegetables). It has strong antioxidant properties that help remove free radicals (which can harm your cells and DNA and are thought to cause cancer) from your system. The chemical gets to the free radicals before they can damage your body. Olives on the other hand, are packed with another popular antioxidant that your body needs — vitamin E. The vitamin helps boost your immunity and is good for your skin, hair and your heart as well. When olives and tomatoes are combined, they can slow cancer cell growth much more than either one of them can on their own. The combination is also good for cutting the risk of heart disease. If you don't like eating them raw, mix some olive oil and tomatoes into a delicious tapenade to eat with your meals, or make a sauce for your pasta. However, when you include them in your diet, make sure you include them together to get maximum benefits from them.
“i always test the water” The idea that sometimes you're thirsty when you think you're hungry doesn't only make sense on paper. Before I read about the theory, I never paid attention to my hunger pangs — if I felt hungry, I ate. However, after reading about it, I started drinking water every time I felt hungry and to my surprise, 60-70% of the times my hunger subsided. When I think about it, apart from a dry mouth, there's no proper sign to differentiate between thirst and hunger. Now, I always drink a glass of water when I feel hungry and only if I still feel hungry 15 minutes later, do I eat something. It is a sound theory and can work wonders for those who are trying to lose weight but are defeated by their constant hunger. Give it a try! — dev Goswami
the loGic The thirst mechanism in your body isn't as powerful as your hunger mechanism. Your body has almost the same reaction to thirst that it has to hunger — feeling weak, dizzy or close to fainting. So, it can be easy for you to think that you're hungry when you are actually thirsty. To prevent this mistake from ruining your diet or causing you to overeat, simply drink water when you feel hungry and see if your hunger subsides.

t's one thing to try and trick your children into eating vegetables by masking them in bakes, lasagnas and over pizzas, but that may not make them like them any better. New research from Arizona State University however, found that something known as flavour pairing can condition your children to actually like the vegetables you're trying to get them to eat. The lead author of the study, Elizabeth Capaldi-Phillips says that the study had the potential to actually change the eating habits of children, making them eat more vegetables! If you're as curious as we were to find out exactly how they did this, here goes: The study was conducted by making the parents of 29 children between 3 and 5-years-old fill surveys about how children viewed different types of vegetables, out of which cauliflower and Brussels sprouts were vegetables that children hated the most. As part of the study, children were given either of the two, once every day for a week. They were served it plain, with unsweetened cream cheese and with sweetened cream cheese in different groups. The fact that the children given the vegetables with cream cheese liked them better is no surprise, but after the conditioning period, children were given the vegetables plain and surprise, surprise — they actually didn't have such a strong, adverse reaction to them! Research already shows that children take at least 8-10 tries to actually like any new food, but this method is helpful for parents of children who are fussy eaters. Don't overload your children with all sorts of vegetables doused in cream cheese (they might end up hating cream cheese!), but it's important to make them able to eat all types of vegetables from a young age and not give in to their preferences so early, especially with healthy foods. The food pairing trick uses a method that is known as associative conditioning. This method gets ideas and
>> If your children make this face when you give them vegetables, try flavour pairing experiences to reinforce one another, making the experience of eating a vegetable a good one.
Get your kids eatinG So, you don't have to fool them into eating their vegetables. Instead, just condition them to like them! Start with appetisers. Vegetable sticks dipped in cream cheese or a smiley face salad. You can also make vegetable dips, pesto sauces and gravies to get them accustomed to the taste, or put them in a soup. This way you can slowly get them to like eating the vegetables that they don't enjoy along with food that they do. The flavour pairing then conditions them to get accustomed to the vegetable so even if it doesn't become a favourite, they won't make a fuss when you ask them to eat it.

get some rest Rest is as important as exercising. What many people do not understand is that you need to give your body time to recover from the strain you are subjecting it to. Without rest days, you are prone to developing injuries such as pulls and muscles tears because your body is overworked and has had no time to recover from the rigorous training you are subjecting it to.

easy on the weights Using weights that are too heavy is lethal. If you notice that you are making jerking motions to lift the weight off the ground or are being pulled downwards by its weight when you are placing it back on the floor — the weight is too heavy for you. Go easy on the weights to avoid pulls and tears and graduate from one weight to another gradually.
Pay attention While you may want to toughen up and push your body to get maximum results, be sure to listen to it as well. Sometimes, an existing pain or pull when ignored, can lead to a muscle or ligament tear and render you immobile for a long period of time. More harm than good we feel!

« Know more: Sony'S waterproof mp3 player
>> From practicing to be a drummer to working out to rock music, there are quite a few unconventional workouts out there
Dev Goswami tells you about Sony's latest mp3 player that is waterproof and is being sold in a clever way
F
GoinG crazy
When something becomes a trend, people usually find a way to take it to the extreme. Dev Goswami tells you about some of the craziest workouts that exist
I
t isn't cool to just exercise any more. What is cool, is to develop your own work out routine that will make people go from 'Is that even possible?' to 'I want to try that!' In this article we bring you a mix of both. You won't find any of these workouts at your neighbourhood gym (mostly) but, it is a good thing, because sometimes, as is the case with treadmill dancing (no, we aren't kidding!), these 'workouts' might put you at serious risk of injury. However, if you do want to try them, just get a group of friends, take the necessary safety precautions, look up the video or a set of instructions on the internet and give these a go!
Treadmill dance Okay, let us satisfy your curiosity first. This potentially dangerous workout is exactly what the name suggests — dancing while on a treadmill. There is a high risk of you falling off the treadmill while you move your body, turn around 180° (and sometimes 360°) and continue jiving, all this while maintaining your balance on a moving treadmill. It supposedly will help you improve your sense of balance, but we think that there are much safer alternatives (some yoga asanas are specifically meant for this).
The punk rock workouT Music and exercise go hand-in-hand but the
music has always been limited to energy pumping, pop songs... until now. The punk rock workout has all the elements of a rock concert/party — dimly lit room with a clublike ambience, the smell of stale beer (probably due to the fact that these rooms are an actual club/party locations) and torn jeans. However, that doesn't mean that those who believe in this workout take fitness lightly. The session involves intense aerobic exercises which will ensure your fitness. The only difference is that these exercises have been set to some of the best punk rock hits.
drummer workouT Have you ever watched a live rock concert and thought, 'Being a drummer sure must require a lot of energy.'? We're sure you have and you're probably right. The drummer workout is based on that idea, even though there's no actual drums involved. It involves three feet long weighted sticks (coming in a variety of weights) that you have to vigorously hit the floor with. You stand with your legs stretched apart and the motion of lifting the sticks above your head and then hitting the floor with them will work your arms, back and torso.
Thriller workouT Okay, this is not a 'crazy' workout, but it sure is a fun workout. King of pop Michael
Jackson's legendary song Thriller uses dance moves that can give you a serious dance workout. Already liking the sound of it? We do too! The best part about this is that compared to the others on this list, this is one is the safest and might actually do your body some good. Sadly, you won't find this workout at any gym in India. However, all you need to do is look for videos on the internet that teach you the moves of this workout and give it a try.
prancercise We left the best for the last. That is, not the best workout, but the craziest. For the last two years a fitness method called Prancercise, invented by Joanna Rohrback, has been gaining popularity... but not all of it is positive. What is it? We think their website (www.prancercise.com) describes it best: “It is defined as a springy, rhythmic way of moving forward, similar to a horse's gait and ideally induced by elation.” Yes, a horse's gait — their words, not ours! Their video on YouTube goes from making sense (when Joanna talks about walking around in a park with ankle weights) to... umm... weird, when she starts hopping, or should we say, prancing around in an 'elated' manner accompanied by music you're more likely to hear at a heavy metal concert. Pretty crazy, no?
rom watches to smart phones, quite a lot of gadgets have been introduced in waterproof or water resistant form. And when it comes to listening to music, our phones are more than capable of doing the job, ensuring that we don't need any other gadget. So, with the market already saturated with such products, if a company were to launch something similar, they would have to do something quite clever and unique, right? Well, Sony did exactly just that! The electronics company recently launched a completely waterproof, wireless mp3 player that you can use while swimming. But, how do you convince the consumers that a product is actually water proof? Sell it in water, of course! Okay, maybe the answer is not that obvious; but that's what Sony did. They have been selling their latest mp3 players in water bottles! Don't believe us? The picture adjacent will prove it. The company didn't stop there either. To make the product easy to shop for and to tempt consumers, they’re selling the mp3 player in New Zealand via vending machines. The idea is that instead of visiting an electronics store, people can buy the mp3 player just like they would a bottle of water. The player has 4GB storage and lasts for eight hours if you charge it for three hours; but even charging it for three minutes will make it last for 90 whole minutes. Sadly, it is not yet available in India, but we're really hoping that it comes here soon.

DiaBeTeS & yOuR eyeS The reason that diabetes is such a deadly disease is because of the havoc it can cause your body. Dev Goswami talks to Padmashree Dr. Keiki Mehta about Diabetic Retinopathy
rom your hair to your feet, diabetes is a disease that can affect a number of your organs. Your eyes are one of your organs that diabetes can have serious effects on. This is a dangerous condition as it is quite possible, that you can suffer from Diabetic Retinopathy, which damage to your retine (retinoparthy) caused due to diabetes, and not know about it. We talk to Dr. Keiki Mehta, a Padmashree awardee and the surgical head and director of Mehta International Eye Institute and Colaba Eye Hospital, who tells about the different aspects of this condition.
F
off the leaking vessels using a laser. However, if your condition has progressed, injections which will help stabilise your retina and prevent it from peeling off might be administered. In an absolute worst case scenario, a virectomy will be perfomed on the patient. This surgery involves removing the viterous humor (a gel-like fluid that fills the gap between your lens and retina) – this is done to get better access to your retina and allows the surgeon to repair the leaking vessels and remove blood clots. It is also done because the blood present in this gel may not clear out on its own. The gel is then replaced with silicone oil or gel.
the causes
Prevention
As the name suggests, diabetic retinopathy is triggered by diabetes. As to the actual cause, the condition occurs because of damage suffered by the blood vessels located in your retina. During the earliest stage of this condition, which can be easily cured and reversed, fine blood clots, accompanied by hazy white spots, will form on your retina. If they are not treated, the vessels then start leaking, leading to macular oedema, which can affect your vision. This can lead to your retina completely peeling off ,causing loss of vision.
This is a serious condition that is unlikely to be noticed in it’s earliest stages. So, to make sure you are doing all you can, keep these precautions in mind:
Watch out for Sadly, like we said earlier, this condition doesn't really have any major warning signs. The earliest stage, which is the easiest to treat and cure, will not change your vision, so you may never spot it. However, at the later stages your vision will start to progressively blurry or you might suffer from temporary incidents of blurry vision caused due to drops of blood leaking from the vessels.
treating it
>> Diabetic Retinopathy is hard to detect, so get your eyes checked regularly
The condition is quite serious, but a number of treatment options exist. The most common and one that is used in the early stages, is sealing
control your diabetes: By this we mean both your blood sugar as well as your blood pressure. Keeping both of them at manageable levels will go a long way in keeping your risk of diabetic retinopathy low. stay alert: If you suffer from diabetes and observe even the tiniest bit of change in your vision, immediately visit your doctor or an ophthalmologist. It is probably nothing, but with this condition, it is truly better to be safe than sorry. risk assessments: If you're suffering from diabetes ask your doctor to give you a personalised risk assessment and any steps you can take to avoid this condition.
Who is at risk? People with diabetes, both type 1 and 2, are at a risk of suffering from diabetic retinopathy. Pregnant women who have diabetes should be extra careful and it is recommended that they have eye examinations every trimester, as they are at a higher risk.

S
>> Refractory Vaginismus is can lead to depression
imply put, refractory vaginismus is the onset of spasms that occur due to any form of penetration, including wearing a tampon and a gynecological exam. This means that any kind of penetration through the vaginal inlet is restricted by the muscle and causes immense pain for the patient, restricting sexual intercourse. Refractory vaginismus accounts for approximately 1-7% of unconsummated marriages in India and there is little innovation with regards to treatment in this area. Dr. Sanjay Pandey, a consultant of Andrology, Urology and Gender Reassignment Surgeon, from Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, is one of the few doctors using BOTOX to help with refractory
vaginismus. He says, “There is immense need for a fresh perspective on sexual problems in India and we need to treat patients through the eyes of the medicine rather than imposing old practices on them.” Using BOTOX to treat this issue is minimally invasive, free of complications for most part and very simple. Explaining the actual treatment, Dr. Pandey tells us, “BOTOX has the ability to relax neuromuscular junctions of muscles — when injected — by bringing about synaptic transmission interruption that keeps the vaginal muscles relaxed. This was not possible earlier, with other techniques that were non-invasive. The span of activity lasts for around six to seven months, which is enough for
couples to have learned the behaviour of coital activity with relaxation and dilatation, away from the refractory state of the past.”

Dear Barbara, I have long, curly hair and while I like to embrace it and limit the amount of heat styling I subject it to, I notice that it gets very knotty, which eventually causes my hair to break. What should I do? — arundhati singh, walkeshwar Dear arundhati, There are several things you could do to keep your knotty hair under check. First, use a good conditioner as this smoothens your hair out and prevents it from becoming a tangled mess. Next, make sure to wash you hair with cold water instead of a temperature that borders on scalding hot. Cold water smoothens your hair cuticles, so that when they rub together, they will not get tangled. Hot water does the opposite. Worst case scenario — use a detangling product. They come as sprays, liquids and creams and they also have added benefits such as heat protection. If you don't want to purchase one, mixing a tablespoon of your conditioner with some water and spraying it onto your hair will work just as well.

Dear Barbara, I have a lot of freckles on my face, ever since I was a child. While it didn't bother me then, now in my 20s they seem unattractive. What can I do to get rid of them? — akash Chawla, mulund Dear akash, Freckles are generally caused by sun exposure. Increasing your intake of vitamin C and E will greatly help with this. Also, apply a high factor sunscreen to ensure that you don't get more freckles. As far as treatment is concerned, laser treatment and chemical peels are two that are most popular. For a more natural method, try washing your face with sour milk. The high percentage of lactic acid in it helps reduce the appearance of freckles. Also, rubbing lemons on your skin will help lighten the freckles as it is a natural bleach. But, honestly, freckles look good and you should wear yours with confidence. In a first, NCRB to tabulate poll-related crimes
N
EW DELHI: With the poll season catching up, the NCRB – repository of data related to crimes and criminals in the country -- has for the first time decided to tabulate and record a new category of 'election related crimes'. The National Crimes Record Bureau (NCRB) is in the process of finalising a 'reporting format' which will soon be circulated among all the states and Union Territories which will be used by them to report to the agency about all crimes which take place before, during and just after polls -- both during Lok Sabha and Assembly elections. Sources said a necessity to create a new and separate category for election crimes was felt after a recent meeting held by various police stakeholders in the Home Ministry found that there was no representative data for these offences across the country. The Election Commission (EC), the sources said, was also concerned by the fact that no comprehensive data of criminal activities was centrally available currently. "Instances of clashes, attacks, killings, transport of illegal inducements like liquor and cash take place in the run up to the polls. Criminal acts of booth capturing, firing and looting of EVMs are also reported across various states during polls.

These are some of the broad categories which the NCRB will begin tabulating soon," a senior official said. The NCRB, according to the sources, will tabulate all these data under one head which will help the police department and other agencies, including EC, involved in preparations and conduct of polls in the country. "The EC, over the last years, has been insisting on curbing the use of black money at the hustings with the help of enforcement agencies and the Income Tax department. This exercise has been registering a lot of activities and these would be a part of the new NCRB database," the official said. The data prepared and compiled by the agency comes handy for extensive usage by a multitude of government agencies and non-governmental organisations in their different pursuits and even preparation of new policies and better laws against crimes and in cases of criminal reforms. The NCRB, headquartered in the national capital, is mandated to function as a clearing house of information on crime and criminals including those operating at national and international levels so as to assists the investigators, and others in linking crimes to their perpetrators. The department was created in 1986.

“E
ventually, just the way it happened in the US, physical retailers in India will have to establish a presence online. And, with the right strategies, they can even compete effectively. For instance, to tackle the queue problem at its stores, Wal-Mart allows customers to shop online and opt for either home delivery or store pickup. Today, Wal-Mart is among the top online retailers in the US. This shows how it can be done,” says Prasad Koparkar, Senior Director – Industry and Customised Research, He was referring to CRISIL Research, estimates that online retailing -- both direct and through marketplaces* -- will become a Rs 500 billion industry by 2016 in India, growing at a whopping 5055% annually over the next three years. That would be over 30 times the size at the end of fiscal 2008. The segment has been growing like gangbusters in India, with revenues surging from around Rs 15 billion in 2007-08 to an estimated
Rs 139 billion in 2012-13 – or a compounded annual growth rate of 56%. Yet it remains a nascent portion of the overall e-commerce segment in India where the travel business dominates with about two-thirds share. But the equation is changing fast enough to pose a threat to brick-and-mortar retailers -- not just of books, music and electronics, but also apparel and grocery. Says Rahul Prithiani, Director, Industry Research, “From around 8% share of the organised retail market in India now, online retailing will zoom to around 18% by 2016. But as a proportion of overall retail -- including the massive unorganised segment -- it will be just over 1% at the end of that year. Yet the potential is huge. For example, in the US, which is the biggest market for online retail, and the UK, the share of online retail is around 9-10%. Even in a developing market such as China, it is 4-5%.” Over the past 4-5 years, competition from online retailers such as Flipkart (in books, music and electronics) and Myntra and Jabong (in
apparel) has hurt physical retailers, forcing many to also go online -even as their net store additions have declined. Similarly, in the perishables market, e-commerce companies such as BigBasket and Localbanya are posing a strong challenge with their ‘call-order-deliver’ model. On the other hand, companies focused on books and music are closing down many stores or even shutting down completely because they are unable to compete with the huge discounts offered by online retailers. Online retailers also play the volume game through shopping festivals several times a year to spur sales, which is difficult for the physical retailer because of realty and inventory costs. What is also working for online retailers is the growing satisfaction with the transaction experience they afford: customers don’t have to physically travel to stores, get a fairly good idea about the products browsing in the comfort of their homes and office, pay on delivery, and also get their money back – no questions asked – in case of dissatisfaction.
50 % Of Indian Businesses Look Within For Successors By A Business Reporter
H
alf of Indian corporates believe that their successors will come from within the business, while 26 % see them coming from outside, says a survey. Besides, 48 % of the respondents said that they are either using or have used the services of a business coach to develop their leadership skills. According to tax and advisory firm Grant Thornton's International Business Report, 50 % of Indian business leaders believe their successors would come from within
the business while 26 % say their next in line would come from outside the business, from a competitor organisation or different sector. Only 23 % of the business leaders haven't even considered as to where their successors would come from. The UAE tops the list of countries where 54 % of business leaders see their successors coming from within the business, while in the Nordic countries, only 21 % of business leaders subscribe to this view. In BRIC nations as a whole, 40 % businesses hold this view, globally 43 % business leaders see their successors
coming from within the business. The survey further noted that 48 % of businesses in India are either using or have used the services of a business coach to develop their leadership skills. Grant Thornton Partner, Business Advisory Services, Vinamra Shastri said: "It is heartening to see that a large number of business leaders have thought about the issue of succession, which is critical to the long-term growth and sustainability of every business." Moreover, if 50 % of businesses believe that their successors would come from within the business, it becomes imperative for them to spend significant time in coaching future leaders in their organisations, Shastri said. Moreover 74 % business leaders in India said that their personal leadership skills assessments help them do so, followed by leadership skills assessments from staff (60 %) and setting challenging goals and monitoring progress (56 %). In terms of leadership attributes, integrity, a positive attitude and communication came out on top globally. While, in India, positive attitude (98 %), communication (94 %), ability to inspire (98 %) and confidence (96 %) were among the top leadership attributes. These findings are significant in the view of a proposal being considered by market regulator Sebi. If implemented, the norms will make it
mandatory for all listed Indian companies to put a succession plan in place. This proposal aims at protecting the interests of investors in the event of the untimely death, departure or poor performance of a leader; all of which usually hurt investors' interest.

Fast-Tracking Stalled Projects May Not Boost Capex By A Business Reporter
D
espite government's clearing over Rs 4 lakh crore worth of stalled projects since last June, Bank of America Merrill Lynch yesterday said it is unlikely that investment demand will pick up till 2015 because of the high interest rates. "We remain bearish on investment picking up till 2015. While fast-tracking may help, lending rates are still too high to kick start projects," BofA-ML said. Over the past eight months, the government - which has been criticised for 'policy paralysis' - has cleared over 120 projects entailing an investment of over Rs 4 trillion, out of a total of Rs 18 trillion in projects which are stuck for want of clearances or land

acquisition issues. With an eye on taming inflation, the Reserve Bank has delivered three rate hikes since Governor Raghuram Rajan took over in September. However, the price rise scenario has shown signs of cooling lately. BofA-ML said it expects lending rates to come down by up to 0.75% in FY15. The brokerage also said there are "upside risks" to Finance Minister P Chidambaram's fiscal deficit target of 4.1% for FY15 as projected in the interim budget. It added that a fiscal consolidation with a reliance on cutting expenditure is not the right strategy and may nopt be sustainable over time. It also said the potential growth rate of the country is 7.5%, higher than the 7% pegged by the government.

angit Mahabharati is a premier teaching institution from the city which was set up by the late Nikhil Ghosh, who was a versatile musician and a musicologist. It is now into its 74th year and has Nayan Ghosh, the eminent tabla and sitar player, running it with the same elan as his distinguished father. The annual festival of the 'Sangit Mahabharati' has always been a star studded affair, with luminaries like Ravi Shankar, Ali Akbar Khan, Vilayat Khan, Halim Jaffer Khan, Kumar Gandharva, and Bhimsen Joshi performing for the institution. This year, too, was no exception. The festival opened with a vocal recital by Jayateerth Mevundi – a young singer from Hubli, who is being considered a rising star of Hindustani music. The main
‘Taptapadi’ now on screen
Star-studded music festival strength of his music is its resemblance to Bhimsen Joshi's. Mevundi has trained under Arjunsa Nakod and Shripati Padigar, who were under the sway of Bhimsen Joshi. He sang the raga 'Shudh Kalyan' which was in the Bhimsen mould, and the raga 'Basant' which was in the Abdul Karim Khan mould. Venerated sarod player and musician Buddhadev Dasgupta also performed in the first session. He was recently in the city to give an illuminating talk on the techniques of practicing instrumental music. Dasgupta has an old connection with the late Nikhil Ghosh. "My father first met the two brothers in Barisal, which is now in Bangladesh way back in the 1930s.The elder one was a flute player, and the younger one, a tabla player. Later they flowered out as Pannalal and Nikhil Ghosh. Nikhil Ghosh landed up in Bombay in 1941 and set up Arun Sangeetalaya in Khar which later
Purbayan Chatterjee
grew into the present 'Sangit Mahabharati'," said Dasgupta in an interview from Calcutta. "What I admire the most about him is that he was a complete musician with equal command of the tabla as well as of vocal and sitar music," added Dasgupta, who is applauded for his pinpointed accuracy of notes and deep knowledge of raga music. Dasgupta is acknowledged as the finest master of the Senia Shahajahnpur gharana of the sarod. He played the raga 'Kausi Kanada' and was accompanied by Devashish on the sarod and on the tabla by Nayan and Ishan Ghosh. Pt. Nayan Ghosh is a role-model in the world of music and an example of how a person's musical education and vision should be well rounded. When I was growing up and learning music, my father would cite Nayanda as an example of somebody who was equally good at the sitar and tabla. It's my privilege to
know, from close quarters, a musician of such knowledge, skill and aesthetic ability. Apart from that, he's true to his art and his value system is also exemplary. Rarely have I seen a person who speaks his mind so articulately. He is loved and respected at the same time by our generation," said Purbayan Chatterjee, the star sitar player, who performed in the second session A pupil of his father Parthopratim Chatterjee, Purbayan has developed into one of the most sought after sitar players of the world, who has performed at places like the Sydney Opera House and the London Queen Elizabeth Hall. As a sitarist, he has modeled himself after the late Nikhil Bannerjee, who was an icon. Purbayan played the raga 'Puriya' with artistry and tayyari and Anubrata Chatterjee gave superb support on the tabla. The festival concluded with a vocal recital by the adored Rashid Khan.

he National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA), India’s premier arts andculture institution presented a soulful ballet dance performance, “Chathurvidha Madhuram” by eminent dancer- choreographer Lata Surendra and Troupe at the Godrej Dance Theatre. With the chills of winter slipping away to let in spring: the season of love and longing, this magnificent Bharatanatyam – Mohiniattam ballet performance that explored the theme of love, while focussing on servitude, friendship, filial possessiveness and blissful oneness, seemed an apt performance to share with the audience on the eve of Valentine’s Day. Lata very evocatively emphasised that 'If love is the flower, bhakti is its fragrance...one falls in love but rises in bhakti'. The imaginative choreographer, excellent teacher and an accomplished exponent that she is, Lata explored the four bhavanas or pathways to love namely, Dasyabhavam or servitude epitomized in the role model of Hanuman; Sakhyam or friendship in Sudama; Vatsalyam or filial possessiveness as a child towards the mother evocatively expressed through Yashoda and Madhuryam; or blissful oneness endorsing togetherness and amorous affection between the lover and the beloved epitomised through Radha and Krishna. This also marked the peak of Madhura bhakti experienced by the Gopis of Vrindavana. Surendra stipulated that ‘Bha-

vana’, the attitude of the devotee to the Lord, played a vital role in savouring the nectar of supreme bliss or ‘Rasamrutham’. The ballet endorsed that ‘true love’ ultimately gathered within its folds all four aspects of servitude, friendship, nurturing and blissful oneness, leading ultimately to completeness or ‘Poornatha’, making this earth a parenthesis in eternity. Lata commenced with a crisply executed invocation to the Truth defined by Lord Rama followed by Dasya bhavam presented through Mohini Attam by Sujatha Nair and other disciples of Guru Smt. Jayashree Nair. The dramatic episodes of Hanuman's meeting with
Rama, his burning of Lanka, his meeting with Sita and his absolute link in the union of Lord Rama and Sita was brought out in successive frames. Sujatha as Hanuman, sensitively brought out the energised exuberance of Pavanaputhra. The universal motherchild relationship or 'vatsalya bhavam' was also enacted effectively with the interpretation of the famous lullaby by Irayimman Thampi and performed in the Mohiniattam style by Sujata Nair and disciples of the Guru Jayashree Nair. Sakhya bhavam was sheathed in Bharata Natyam. The childhood friend of Krishna, Sudama who meets the Lord after several years, was enacted with powerful abhinaya by Lata, that was truly elevating. Sudama's search for Krishna, his meeting with Dwarkadeesh, his reluctance to enter the palace, and his absolutely overwhelmed persona, was portrayed in a subtle, sensitive and heartwrenching manner by the experienced dancer Lata Surendra. Lata also succeeded in projecting the immortal love relationship of Radha and Krishna using the formatting of Bharata Natyam with hectic interlaced layers of Nritta, Nritya and Natya. Shiva prasad's mellifluous vocal support and the modulated and crisp nattuvangam of Kalishwar Pillai, the son of Lata's illustrious Guru, the great Maestro Kalaimamani T.S. Kadirvelu Pillai, and Chandran's Mridangam, enhanced the celebration of Love in 'madhurya bhava' that highlighted Sringaram in seperation (viyoga) and Union (sambhoga).

INDIA SEEK TO REDISCOVER WINNING TOUCH IN ASIA CUP SPORTS

India cricket team captain Virat Kohli stretches during a practice session ahead of the Asia Cup tournament in Dhaka, Bangladesh on Monday. Pakistan plays Sri Lanka in the opening match of the five nation one day cricket event that begins Tuesday.

F
comprising Ajinkya Rahane, wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik and the classical-mould Cheteshwar Pujara -- performs in the slog overs. After being made the captain as Dhoni's replacement in a tri-series in the West Indies, Kohli had begun with a loss but since then he has been on a roll with seven straight wins. That five of the seven wins came against minnows Zimbabwe tells a different story as Kohli will have a completely different challenge this time. Kohli had a dream run in the last Asia Cup, scoring the tournament's highest (185) against Pakistan and was the leading run-getter but India missed the final berth by virtue of their loss to Bangladesh. It was in the same match, the now-retired Indian cricketing icon Sachin Tendulkar had notched the feat of notching up his 100th international century, incidentally his last. Having arrived in Bangladesh in late January for a full series which they won comfortably (1-0 in Tests,
2-0 in T20s and 3-0 in ODIs), four time champions Sri Lanka will start favourites in the 50-over tournament that will lead up to the warmup matches of the World Twenty20 here. Senior Lankan batsman Kumar Sangakkara would be the one to watch out for in the event given the fine form he has displayed in recent times. With his first triple century followed by a second innings ton in the Test series, the 36-year-old has been in sublime touch. In one-dayers too, Sangakkara has been in blistering form as his century had helped Sri Lanka clinch the series. He would look to ensure that his team makes amends for failing to win a single match in the previous edition of the tournament, which was also held here. Unlike India, Sri Lanka will not be short on experience in batting with senior players like Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene and batting allrounder Angelo Matthews leading
the side. As for Pakistan, the defending champions, the most sought after match will be the one against India when the two arch-rivals meet for the first time after the ICC Champions Trophy, which Dhoni's men had won in a rain-affected match. "It's always a big challenge to playing against India because there is so much interest in the game. India are a formidable side and we have to be at our best to win," Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq said ahead of their tournament-opener against Sri Lanka. Fatullah in Narayangonj, a suburban town in south of Dhaka, will host first five league matches before the tournament shifts to Mirpur in Dhaka. Pakistan, who beat Bangladesh in last year's final, come to the tournament on the back of series wins over Sri Lanka and South Africa and Misbah and Mohammad Hafeez along with Ahmed Shehzad will be the batting backbone.
ATULLAH (BANGLADESH): Humiliated and winless for quite a while, a bruised Indian cricket team would seek to rediscover the lost touch in a five-way battle for regional supremacy when the 12th Asia Cup one-day cricket tournament starts today. India were thoroughly embarrassed in their recent trips to South Africa and New Zealand, failing to win a single match in any format. And now, India are up for another tough challenge when they square off against arch-rivals Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and debutantes Afghanistan in the sub-continent's premier ODI event. Captained by Virat Kohli in the absence of an injured Mahendra Singh Dhoni, India have been a record fivetime Asia Cup champions but can hardly be considered favourites this time around given the way they have faltered in recent months. The struggles in South Africa and New Zealand have laid bare the team's bowling frailties and the overreliance on Kohli in the batting department. The Indians will kick off their campaign onWednesday with a relatively easy match against hosts Bangladesh here. But once again, the bestseller of the biennial tournament will be the India-Pakistan marquee match in Mirpur on March 2 when the two traditional foes renew their intense cricketing rivalry. Pakistan will face Sri Lanka in the tournament-opener here today. Without the finishing ability of Dhoni, it will be interesting to see how the new-look middle-order -- Afghanistan cricket players huddle during a practice session ahead of the Asia Cup tournament in Dhaka.

Kohli excited about captaincy challenge though it is tough DHA KA : Far from being bogged down by captaincy, Virat Kohli said he is looking forward to leading an underfire Indian cricket team in the Asia Cup starting today even though it is a tough position to be in. Kohli has been made stand-in captain for the regional mega-event after regular skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who is under the scanner following the team's dismal showing in the recent tours of South Africa and New Zealand, was forced out due to a side strain. "I don't think this is anything compared to what he has gone through in the past few years," Kohli said while addressing the media after the team's arrival here. "I am captain for just one tournament. It is completely different from regularly captaining the side. When you win, you're praised, when you lose, you're criticised. It is all a part of it. I am not in a position right now to experience all that. I have got this one-odd opportunity like I did in the past as well. I am sure it is a very tough position to be in. You have to be ready to take all the criticism and praise that comes your way," he added. India will open their Asia Cup campaign on Wednesday against Bangladesh at Fatullah. The 25-yearold batsman, whose fine form was one of the few positives that India could latch on to during their winless streak in South Africa and New Zealand, said he is excited about leading the side. "I have only been captain for about eight games till now. It went pretty good but this is a big tournament. It's a challenge I'm looking forward to. We have got a young group of guys and some exciting players," Kohli said. "I think that excites me to have a group that I can have a chat with and be on the same page. It's important to have an understanding. It's really exciting for me to improve the record which is already good. I'm looking forward to the tournament." When asked about the muchanticipated match against Pakistan on March 2, Kohli said the team's target was to win the tournament and not just one grudge match against the traditional rivals. "Obviously we are here to win the tournament. We haven't just come here to play one game and go back home, that's not our aim. Our aim is to win every game that we play. A game against Pakistan is always a hyped game for us, obviously a big pressure match. We take every game the same way. You know, the aim is to win the tournament, not just one game, and make sure the people are happy," he said.

UBAI: India colts salvaged some pride as they comfortably beat their Sri Lankan counterparts by 76 runs in a fifth-place semi-final play-off match at the ICC U-19 World Cup. In absence of skipper Vijay Zol, who was banned for breaching ICC’s Code of Conduct, the Sanju Samson led side piled up 291 for seven in the stipulated 50 overs at the ICC Cricket Academy ground in Dubai. UBAI: Pakistan stormed into the final of the ICC Under-19 World Cup 2014 aided to a large extent by a determined unbeaten 63-run eight wic ket stand between Zafar Gohar (37 not out) and Amad Butt (26 not out). Earlier the Pakistan bowlers were seen in good light as they restricted England to 204 in what was a see-saw semi-final. There was an unpredictable ebb and flow of momentum during the Pakistan run-chase. There were phases where Pakistan dominated and England were in a spot, but in the end, Pakistan prevailed in a battle of nerves. If Pakistan were to chase 205 to win the game, Imam-ul-Haq and Sami Aslam were crucial. The top-order has Pakistan pace bowler Zia-ul-Haq been Pakistan’s main weapon and claimed a couple of English scalps. their middle order hasn’t really been exposed. Imam did get off to a good start.
