MC’S‘SANGTO’NOT ENOUGH FORMER DEPUTY MAYOR TO GO TO COURT AGAINST BMC'S LEASE CANCELLATIONS AND LEASE RENT ENHANCEMENT By Philip Varghese
T
he Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) policy of canceling old 999 year leases granted by the British to old buildings in the island city, and replacing them with staggeringly expensive 30-year leases, is to be challenged in court through a Public Interest Litigation. On Monday, former deputy mayor and Congress MLA, Babubhai Bhawanji, in his capacity as president, National Welfare Foundation, met the chief minister at his Malabar Hill residence Varsha, to hand him a memorandum, demanding that the state intervene tomake amendments in the policy of redevelopment of old buildings that is attracting such draconian changes. Mr Bhawanji was at the head of a delegation of affected residents representing thousands of people afraid to go in for redevelopment of dilpaidated buildings because of the high costs imposed by the BMC. The Chief Minister said, “Me baghto”, (I'll see). Earlier, when the municipal commissioner was approached in the matter, he is reported to have said, “Me sangto”, (I'll tell).

fter the meeting between the chief moderators and the state board was boycotted by the former last week, the HSC exam answer sheets – which have already been dispatched by the state board – remain untouched by examiners, who state that they are unaware of the marking scheme and hence, cannot assess the papers. On February 21, the state board had organised a meeting with the chief moderators from across the state, in Pune. However, from the 12 chief moderators from various divisions, only 4 or 5 attended the meeting, while the others boycotted it, stating that the teachers' demands for higher pay scales have not yet been fulfilled by the state government. As per the structure, the chief moderators hold a meeting with moderators from all the divisions of the board, and give the latter the

As far as the demand for a separate directorate goes, it will be looked into. But we have been told that separate posts like joint directors will be created. We have hence decided to call off our strike from Wednesday morning. Nurses will start working from the first shift on Wednesday,” said Kamal Vaykole, General Secretary, Maharashtra Government Nurses Federation.
Mhaiskar said, “We had a positive meeting. I have asked the DMER to have meetings with the nurses so that minor issues can be sorted out on a regular basis. Also, the deans have been asked to conduct meetings so that administrative issues can be dealt with at their level. We will surely look into filling up vacant posts and giving promotions. With regards to creating a separate directorate, right now, it will be under the DMER. We will later review the situation and then take a decision.”

After this, the moderators hold a similar meeting with the examiners in their division, and give them the same guidelines. Though most of the examiners are experienced, those who have been newly appointed are confused. A moderator, who did not wish to be named, said, "As the chief moderators' meeting was boycotted, the examiners' meeting was not held.
Because of this the new examiners do not have a thorough knowledge of the assessment of the answer sheets and thus they have been untouched. GANDHI’S POLITICAL GURU
Afternoon Despatch & Courier www.afternoondc.in
MUMBAI | WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 26, 2014
G
opal Krishna Gokhale (9 May 1866 – 19 February 1915) was among the tallest leaders of the Indian National Congress. A series of programmes have been planned during his death centenary year, beginning 19 February 2014. Gokhale is more famous as Mahatma Gandhi’s political guru, though his own contributions, were immense by any standard. He belonged to that extraordinary breed, the Maharashtriya Chitpavan Brahman, which has given birth to many prominent personalities like Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak, social reformers like Maharshi Dhondo Keshav Karve, revolutionaries like Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, India's first family planning activist Raghunath Dhondo Karve, women’s liberation activist like Shakuntala Paranjape, and scholars like Pandurang Vaman Kane, who was awarded a Bharat Ratna for his treatise on Hindu religion. One common trait among all thses was that they sacrificed their lives for the country and for society, for the quest of knowledge and Indian freedom, giving no thought to any individual or material pursuit. Characteristically, Chitpavans seldom agree with one another. Tilak and Gokhale, who both rose almost simultaneously to international fame, clashed about the path that the Freedom Movement should adopt, and remained political opponents till the end. The most striking factor of Gokhale’s life can be said to be the inspiration he showered on Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi and Mohammed Ali Jinnah, both of whom were dazzled by Gokhale’s scholarship and sincerity. Like Gandhi, Jinnah was so impressed by the erudite man, that he wanted to become a ‘Muslim Gokhale.’ It is a cruel irony of fate, that the two Gokhale admirers emerged as the principal antagonists in the developments that led to India’s partition on 15 August 1947. Gokhale’s short lifespan of 49 years is a saga of struggle and achievements. His family was relatively poor, but mades sure that Gokhale was adequately educated, so that he would obtain employment in a government office. Gokhale graduated from the Elphinstone College in Mumbai in 1884 and then shifted base to Pune, the hotbed of the Nationalist Movement. There, he was greatly influenced by Western political thought and by philosophers like John Stuart Mill and Edmund Burke. As a freedom fighter, Gokhale became a critic of the alien rule, but his reverence for Western political theory and British institutions remained unwavering. Justice Mahadev Govind Ranade, a Chitpavan, was the leading light of the social movement in the then Bombay province. He created the theory that the British Rule was a ‘divine dispensation’ and hence was opposed to its overthrow by violent means, although violence was gaining acceptance due to British atrocities. Vasudev Balwant Phadke, the first armed revolutionary in post1857 India, tried to rebel against the British during this time. Eventually, Gokhale became a disciple of
Ranade, whose thinking he considered godsent. This Congress sect, now called the Centrists, was in those times known as the Moderates. In contrast, those espousing the overthrow of the British Rule by calling the rulers ‘liars’, were branded as Extremists, and were led by Tilak. Gokhale’s stint in the Indian National Congress began in 1889, five years after the INC was formed in Mumbai. His contemporaries were illustrious leaders like Dadabhai Naoroji, Bipin Chandra Pal, Lala Lajpat Rai and Annie Besant. Gokhale however, stood apart due to his oratorical skills and mastery over the Indian economy. His fluency in English and his moderate language endeared him to the British, who did not want law and order situations to develop out of the Nationalist Movement. Thus, without any

country, and Gandhi was highly impressed with this philosophy. Gokhale and Tilak were elected to the Bombay Legislative Council in 1899. Though a critic of the government, Gokhale’s speeches were always in the best British parliamentary traditions. The British were enamoured with Gokhale, who was made a member of the Imperial Legislative Council in 1901 and was later nominated to the expanded Imperial Legislative Council in 1909, thus providing fodder to his detractors, that he was a stooge of the British. Lord Curzon had earlier felicitated him with a Companion of the Order of the Indian Empire (CIE) title and Gokhale's oratory became a byword, and his speeches on the annual budget were listened to in rapt attention by the rulers. Gokhale’s political clout was ascending even as Tilak was incarcerated for six years in the Mandalay prison in Burma in 1908 on sedition charges. He was invited to London to liaise with the Secretary of State, John Morley about the political reforms that could be introduced in India. This meeting culminated in the Morley-Minto Reforms of 1909. Gokhale first visited South Africa in 1896 and became acquainted with Gandhi. This relationship later blossomed in a master-disciple bond. It was at Gokhale’s instance that Gandhi decided to return to India and tour it extensively before starting political work. Gandhi also wrote an article, 'Gokhale: My Political Guru', on February 19, 1918, in which he declared, “I have often said that Gokhale was my political Guru...I had the good fortune to wait on the master's master (Justice Ranade), Lokmanya Tilak, Sir Pherozeshah Mehta, Justice Badruddin Tyabji, Dr. Bhandarkar, as also the leaders of Madras and Bengal. I was but a raw youth. Every one of them showered his love on me. These were among the occasions which I can never forget while I live. But the peace of mind which my contacts with Gokhale gave me, those with others did not.” But, finally, Tilak’s prophecy proved accurate about the British. When Gandhi called on him, an ailing Tilak told him, “Young man, don’t be fooled by the British etidifficulty, Gokhale was permitted to each other. Tilak in fact, never quette. I am sure one day you will visit Ireland, and he was apparently wasted an opportunity to belittle reach the same conclusion that I so charming, that he managed to Gokhale, while the latter hardly ever have about the British.” Within a persuade Irish nationalist Alfred mentioned Tilak. couple of years of Tilak’s death, Webb to visit India and preside over In 1905, Gokhale became presi- Gandhi discarded Gokhale's beliefs the Indian National Congress at dent of the Indian National Con- and embarked upon the path of Madras in 1894. gress at Banaras. Dy CM tables interim budget for FY2014-15 in state assembly

ith an eye on the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar yesterday tabled a Rs.5,417.28 crore revenue deficit interim budget for 2014-15 (for four months till June) in the state assembly. The budget envisages revenue receipts of Rs.1,69,907.55 crore and expenditure of
CM’s ‘baghto’ and MC’s ‘sangto’... Continued from pg 1 « Unsatisfied with these replies, Mr Bhawanji has now decided to approach the court. The former MLA has held that the cancelation of lease and their replacement, as well as enhancement of lease rate from the nominal Rs 1 to as much as Rs 25 lakh and more, is legally invalid. The civic body has monetized the entire approach to redevelopment of old buildings and created a policy that acts adversely and is a deterrent to the basic aim and objectives with which the long-term lease were granted in the first place. “In the early years of the last century, in the 1920s and 1930s, the then government had created a Trust for Improvement of Bombay for the benefit of the citizens in their residences and offices, as also with a view to having a proper development plan for the city. At the time it comprised part of Dadar, Matunga, Wadala, Sion, Shivaji Park, Margaon, Worli etc. The trustees of the Bombay Improvement Trust invited offers and agreed to lease out various plots so that lessees could construct buildings to provide residences and offices. At that time, the intending lessees had paid what was then the market price of the property and therefore it was agreed that they would be granted leases in perpetuity or for 999 (nine hundred ninety nine) years with yearly rent of Re.1. It was a symbolic rent to show that the properties belonged to the Bombay Improvement Trust. In 1933, under the provisions of Section 91A of newly introduced Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act, all the properties in the name of Board of Trustees of the Bombay Improvement Trust were transferred to the Municipal Corporation. “They did not pay any money for these chunks of land and this is how the Municipal Corpora-

The first phase having estimated expenditure of Rs.566 crore is underway. Speaking to newspersons later, Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan stated that the government had to do a balancing act while tackling natural calamities, global economic slowdown had to allocate funds for the power tariff sops, food security and other on-going development works. Pawar on the other hand argued that the state has maintained tight fiscal discipline. Leader of opposition in Legislative Council Vinod Tawde remarked that the state government has put a Rs.3,00,478 crore debt on the people and pushed them into a debt trap. MPCC president and MLC Manikrao Thakare termed the interim budget as one which proves that the government has kept its promises it had made earlier.

Blackmailer ‘Boss’ held for abetting suicide By Suresh Golani
A
day after the bodies of a 28-year-old woman and her 5year-old son were recovered from the Bhayandar creek on Monday evening, the Navghar police have arrested the former boss of the deceased woman on charges of abetting suicide. A resident of Shubam Apartment in the Laxmibai Cheddha Nagar of Nallasopara (East), 28-year-old Yashodha Hoshiyarsingh Rana (28), apparently jumped off-from the bridge (connecting Bhayandar and Naigaon) along with her son, Vikas (5) on Monday noon. Their bodies were recovered by locals at about 5 pm. Investigations revealed that Yashodha left her home at about 11 am, leaving behind a suicide note stating that she was taking the extreme step as she was being threatened and harassed by her former employer identified as Umar Balsaniya (38) to whom she had given her mangalsutra, as he was facing an acute financial crunch. However, when she asked him to return her ornament, Balsania started harassing her and even threatened to defame her claiming that she was involved in an affair with him. “Prima facie investigations confirmed that the suicide note was written by Yashodha, following which Umar was arrested and booked under section 306 of the Indian Penal Code,” confirmed Deputy Superintendent of Police, Chandrakant Joshi. Further investigations revealed that Yashodha worked as a commission agent for Umar who operated a mobile refilling dealer in Jogeshwari. Yashodha had left the job two months ago. The accused was remanded to police custody when produced before the District Sessions Court, Thane. Further investigations are on.

Ponder awhile… “The fear of death is the most unjustified of all fears, for there's no risk of accident for someone who's dead.” — Albert Einstein
Put work of platform height increase on fast track
O
ver the years, all over the country, infrastructure development has been going on: It has been however going on at snail's pace. A minister or a babu takes a decision to build some project. A committee is set up: A committee is a must. It takes its own time to submit a report. Consultations with engineers, concerned parties, are made and finally the project is on. Sometimes it takes almost a year for completing the spadework. Take for instance, the suburban railways in Mumbai. It is quite pathetic that platforms have been built at all stations with dangerous yawning gaps. When the platforms were first built, they should have been hardly a few inches below the train level. All these years, when commuters alight, they must have had a feeling that they were falling into a gorge. Recently in Mumbai, deadly accidents have taken place. Customary, familiar observations were made and finally there was an announcement that Rs.60 crore has been sanctioned for raising the platforms. The railway minister's attention should have been drawn – when he presented the budget this month – to the urgent need for closing the gaps. This obviously has not been done. Now a pittance has been sanctioned: Rs.60 crore. The railway folks are still talking about the need for closing those horror gaps – but there is no sign of any action. It is shocking that at Churchgate – terminal for local trains – only one platform has been raised. And it took them ages to complete the work. The new project to raise platforms is certain to take a long time to be completed. When a platform was raised at Churchgate, they took a long time to finish the work. It should be possible to do the work at night also. What is important is to use pre-fabricated stuff – hard, large concrete slabs. The work should not take more than a month. An effort must be made to get the railway minister to Mumbai and to show him the yawning, treacherous gaps. Perhaps only then he might decide to sanction more money for raising the height of the platforms which should be raised not only to prevent accidents but also enable commuters to step off from the train to the platform with ease.

t was not surprising that MPs got weepy on the last day of the 15th Lok Sabha. The dying moments of every term tend to be emotional occasions. No MP knows whether he or she will be back as a member of the next Lok Sabha, sitting on the treasury benches or in the opposition, a cabinet minister or just one of the 543. It was left to home minister Sushil Kumar Shinde, who’s always shooting from the lip, to voice what was going through every MP’s mind that day. “Sit as long as you can in Parliament,” he told the members. “Who knows how many will return to the next Lok Sabha!” The churn in every election is mind boggling with the turnover of MPs now crossing 50 per cent. The 15th Lok Sabha, for instance, had as many as 307 new members, which means that more than half the sitting MPs

The Fourteen Precepts of Interbeing T
HE following fourteen ‘precepts’ are views expressed by the author and Buddhist Monk Thich Nhat Hanh. Thich Nhat Hanh was born in Vietnam in 1926, and he left home as a teenager to become a Zen monk. In Vietnam, he founded the School of Youth for Social Service, Van Hanh Buddhist University, and the Tiep Hien Order. These fourteen precepts serve as guides, though some precepts need further clarification; specifically related to wealth, politics and sex. I make these clarifications at the end. 1. Do not be idolatrous about or bound to any doctrine, theory, or ideology, even Buddhist ones. Buddhist systems of thought are guiding means; they are not absolute truth. 2. Do not think the knowledge you presently possess is changeless, absolute truth. Avoid being narrow-minded and bound to present views. Learn and practice non-attachment from views in order to be open to receive others’ viewpoints. 3. Do not force others, including children, by any means whatsoever, to adopt your views, whether by authority, threat, money, propaganda, or even education. 4. Do not avoid contact with suffering or close your eyes before suffering. Do not lose awareness of the existence of suffering in the
life of the world. Find ways to be with those who are suffering, including personal contact, visits, images, and sounds. 5. Do not accumulate wealth while millions are hungry. Do not take as the aim of your life fame, profit, wealth, or sensual pleasure. Live simply and share time, energy, and material resources with those who are in need. 6. Do not maintain anger or hatred. Learn
MATTER & SPIRIT to penetrate and transform them when they are still seeds in your consciousness. 7. Do not lose yourself in dispersion and in your surroundings. Practice mindful breathing to come back to what is happening in the present moment. Be in touch with what is wondrous, refreshing and healing both inside and around you. Plant seeds of joy, peace, and understanding in yourself in order to facilitate the work of transformation in the depths of your consciousness. 8. Do not utter words that can create discord and cause the community to break. Make every effort to reconcile and resolve all conflicts however small. 9. Do not say untruthful things for the sake of personal interest or to impress people. Do
not utter words that cause division and hatred. Do not spread news that you do not know to be certain. Do not criticize or condemn things of which you are not sure. Always speak truthfully and constructively. Have the courage to speak out about situations of injustice, even when doing so may threaten your own safety. 10. Do not use the Buddhist community for personal gain or profit, or transform your community into a political party. A religious community, however, should take a clear stand against oppression and injustice and should strive to change the situation. 11. Do not live with a vocation that is harmful to humans and nature. Do not invest in companies that deprive others of their chance to live. Select a vocation that helps realize your ideal of compassion. 12. Do not kill. Do not let others kill. Find whatever means possible to protect life and prevent war. 13. Possess nothing that should belong to others. Respect the property of others, but prevent them from profiting from human suffering or suferings of other species on Earth. 14. Do not mistreat your body. Learn to handle it with respect. Do not look on your body as only an instrument. Preserve vital energies (sexual, breath, spirit) for the realization of the Way. — Thich Nhat Hanh

Telangana finally got its statehood AFTER the testing time in bringing 29th State of Telegana, we feel sorry for the people who laid down their lives and the struggle undertaken by the pro-Telegana activists. The people of Telangana always had a grievance that the other regions were not only plundering their resources but also insulting their dialect, culture and customs. They always cite the case of Telugu films, in which only villains or comedians speak in a Telangana accent. With the passage of the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Bill in the Rajya Sabha, the people in Telangana feel their six-decade-old dream has come true. The backward region in the north of united Andhra Pradesh was part of the princely state of Hyderabad. Telangana existed as Hyderabad state from 1950 to 1956, when it was merged with Andhra State, which was carved out of Madras state in 1953. With Kurnool as its capital, Andhra was first state constituted on a linguistic basis after independence. The merger of Telangana with Andhra resulted in the formation of Andhra Pradesh, a bigger state for Telugus. Hyderabad was made its capital. Leaders of Telangana ex-
OPPORTUNITY: Now that Virat Kohli has been given captaincy for the Asia Cup, he should prove that he can be counted on as an alternative to Dhoni.
Kohli is a good bet APROPOS 'Replace defensive Dhoni with aggressive Kohli: Ian Chappell' (ADC, Feb 24), it is indeed a meaningful suggestion provided by yesteryears' stalwart Ian Chappell. In fact, even the Indian retired cricket biggies like Ganguly & Dravid have expressed dissatisfaction in the "obnoxiously" defensive and reactive captaincy of Dhoni in the recent white-washed series of Test matches concluded in New Zealand. It is clearly observed that although Dhoni is a master of the shorter formats of the game, in the longer format he has proved to be far from a capable captain. As rightly suggested by Chappell, in the Asia Cup in Bangladesh, Virat has to prove his mettle that he can be used as an alternative to Dhoni. His credibility as a captain in the past enjoys a good reputation, so let us see how he fares in these matches and whether he could fit the bill . — Bikram Banerjea, Mumbai
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) broke a couple of laws and everyone, and their fathers, jumped into the fray to chastise them. Arvind Kejriwal says he is not interested in power; he wants to find corruption and cleanse society by exposing and ridding the country of all mal-practitioners, be they politicians as high as Sonia Gandhi or bureaucrats like Mukesh Ambani. Obviously, this would upset innumerable applecarts all over the country and several in the vaults of Swiss banks. Thus the pressure to eliminate him and his group and get rid of any competition that may threaten their sweet positions.

Modi's tactics COME election time and you see Politicians and Political parties taking unfair means to prosper in the elections results. Today, when we live in Social Media Era, we see these people misusing these platforms for their own vested interests. As per the recent sting operation called Blue Virus carried by an online media company disclosed how Politicians especially from the BJP have been hiring IT companies to malign the image of their rival politicians. Anto Toms, CEO of US based Flatparty.com, a social networking site, talks about the revolution that online social media has created in the recruitment industry
nternet uprising has brought in strong changes in the way people communicate with each other. Social media consisting of web-based and mobile technologies have altered communication into a social interface for generating value for their users. With millions of potential candidates connected to friends, classmates and competitors through networking sites, companies in chase of this talent pool are now looking to have an edge over their competitors in the online jungle. Innovative methods are now coming in use for a better understanding and simplicity that has influenced the digital medium in recognising the talent across the world. This highly interactive medium has now become an important part of human life, determining all walks of life. From its initial intentions of interlinking personal networks, social media controls diverse fields like business networking, marketing, recruiting etc. With extensive reach and influence, organisations from all sectors have now started to look at the immense potential of social media in recruitment processes. This helps the companies in a more cost efficient and convenient way compared to the conventional approaches like job boards, newspaper advertisement, posting jobs on website, etc. Most of the surveys show that people now get hired from online referrals and company career pages than from job boards. Social media now connects people in a better way. Statistical reports state that approximately 2 billion people all over the world are active in social media, with over 135 million users on LinkedIn, 175 million people on Twitter and 500 million lively members on Facebook. This large user base covers an attractive platform for recruiters to select the proficient candidates through apparent enrolling procedures. Small to large organisations are considering social media as a valuable tool for selecting the right candidates for their job openings. This assists the recruitment industry in a superior way along with the Continued on pg 14 ÂŤ

I am an F.Y.B.Sc. IT student who wants to pursue an MBA after my graduation. What type of MBA will be appropriate for me? — Shahnawaz Siddiqui If by the word ‘type’ you mean the nature of the course, than Management Education can be taken either through a full-time mode, part-time mode as well as correspondence mode. And if by 'type' you mean specialization, then there are a number of specializations like marketing, finance, retail, human resources, hospitality and so on. You are eligible for any of them. However if you are keen to work in the IT sector itself, you can opt for systems as your specialization. I am S.Y.B.B.I student. I wanted to know what course I can pursue along with my graduation, to secure a job in a bank. Should I do an MBA after my graduation? What are the other options available to be besides an MBA? —Alisha Desai If you are planning to work in a bank, you can apply only after your graduation. You can appear for the Banks Probationary Officers Examination or the Bank’s Clerical Posts Examination. The choice of any course is personal. However, you need at least a post-graduate degree to be able to sail through the competition. Other than an MBA you can opt for M. Com., CA, ICWA, CS, courses related to Banking and Finance. What are the points to keep in mind while writing an SOP to apply to a UG course in the UK? — Sahil The Statement of Purpose is one of the most important aspects of your application. Starting off with the basics, a statement of purpose is a well-written essay detailing your reasons for applying to a specific course in the UK. Since most courses in the UK are extremely specialized and streamlined, the university wants to know about your interests, and at the same time, want to get to know you as a person. There are a few questions that your SOP should answer: How did you get interested in the course? What have you studied in high school that ties you to the course? What have you done in terms of your extracurricular activities that will be an asset to you in college? What are some of your future goals? Why do you want to study in the UK? When you have finished writing your SOP, make sure that all these questions have been answered. In some cases the SOP will have a word limit, so make sure you check that before you begin.

Educational trip for street children
S
econd year Bachelors in Management Studies (BMS) students – Lizanne, Sachit, Ryan and Custodio – as part of their curriculum conducted a Public Relation activity for Adventure Tours. The activity planned was to take underprivileged children for an educational trip. So they approached Fr Jesu Priest-in-charge ‘Shelter Don Bosco’, an institution that provides a home for street children. Shelter Don Bosco helps orphaned and street children by providing them shelter, education and all the basic needs in life. Adventure Tours headed by Berzad is a wellestablished tour operator in Mumbai. They organise tours, excursions, picnics, field trips and are popular with school administrators for conducting educational tours. Berzad welcomed the activity of taking the street children for an educational trip and sponsored the entire trip. Last month, the BMS students along with 55 children and four volunteers began the trip at 9 am. The children were excited to know they were being taken to the Mc Donald’s kitchen. At Mc Donalds, the staff explained the process of how french fries, burgers with different variants are processed. The children were so excited that some of them asked if they could try their hands at making burgers. The big surprise for the kids was when each of them was treated with a burger. The bus journey back was full of fun, with singing and the children imitating their favourite actors. After a group photo session at Shelter Don Bosco, it was time to say good bye. The BMS team was thanked and they in turn thanked Adventure Tours for giving them this opportunity and for their support. This is what the BMS students had to say: “It was really a great pleasure for us to see a smile on their faces and to serve them.”

‘I LIKE BEING THE GARDENER WHO WATCHES THE TREE FLOURISH’

love my career. There was a time when I was trying to get into direction but then the film did not work out and six years ago I got a call for casting and I joined. I fell in love with the job and I am still here. It is very interesting. I love it. When you cast people and then the serial does well it leads to the show’s popularity and the characters too; along with more viewership. In short, I like being the gardener who watches the tree flourish. Each successful casting gives me immense pleasure. I feel that education obviously polishes a person, but you need to know the world around you and how it works and I am glad I studied and did not dropout midway. I was in Delhi and was working as a research associate, I got into theatre and came to Mumbai. I was an actor in the movie ‘Ab tak Chappan’ after which I got a call from UTV for working as the casting director. I worked there for two and a half years and later left Mumbai to be with my family in Delhi. Presently, I am a casting director with Triangle productions working on ‘Hatim’ and ‘Mahadev’. There has been no investment monetarily but yes, I put in 24 hours and seven days of a

Says Amrish Sharma, Casting Head, Triangle film company, as he talks about his life as a casting director and advises those who wish to take this up as a career ‘Devon ke Dev Mahadev’, then ‘Hatim’. So I guess it takes patience and a few years to get established. Earning as an established professional depends on the exact job profile. It can range from 20 to 50 thousand or more. Interaction with various people enriches us, building of contacts and experience of knowing different individuals are some of the advantages in this field. Technicalities of TV serials and film making help too. Immense knowledge is gained and of course once established the remuneration is good too. There are quite a lot of difficulties we face on a regular basis as well. While casting we take into consideration every factor that we can but sadly in front of the camera with the entire set up either due to technical compatibility problems or due to personal and behavioural problems, characters tend to get replaced, so this poses a big problem as lookat UTV as the casting director for two and a ing for a perfect replacement is another task week of sheer hard work and patience. A successful casting director should be half years and then joined Creative Eye and with the risk of acceptance and non acceptfocused, intelligent, patient and should worked there for about six and a half years. I ance. I have never come across the casting couch understand the casting requirements from did big shows like ‘Yeh Pyar Na Hoga Kam’, the producer’s side, production’s side and ‘Maayka’, ‘Betiyaan’ etc. Later I got a call from on television at casting level. It is very promifrom the script point of view. I initially worked Triangle productions and joined there for nent in the film industry as it is really difficult Pic for reprsentational purposes only
16
to get breaks and opportunities in that section of entertainment. In television as far as I know the casting couch does not happen at the casting level but yes it may or may not happen at the channel level. It’s a dicey subject to talk about. I have heard about it but never seen it. Ultimately it is talent which counts and takes an actor places. Few incidents may have happened but everything may be happening in secrecy so it never comes out in the open. TV is by and large a very family oriented medium and you get work on your merit. Since I love this field very much, I will continue to work hard and do good work. My advice to newcomers would be that they need to be very patient and understand the job thoroughly. They should understand the requirements and have knowledge about the job and it’s procedures. They need to carry out auditions successfully too. There is tremendous scope for a good career in this line as the entertainment industry is growing. There are more programmes and shows conducted today so as long as there are programmes there will be a demand for casting directors.

As told to Monarose Sheila Pereira
Entrepreneurship: A growing trend among the youth We are surrounded by bored souls working in 9 to 5 jobs, thanks to which there is an urge among the youth to start their own businesses, says Amit Punjabi, Founder, Sankalp Academy
W
e have often heard people say, “I wish I could have done this when I was young,” or “I wish I had taken a different path and followed my dreams,” etc. So it is not just me and you, the youth also voice the same words. Is it any wonder that the youth then look at entrepreneurship as a serious alternative to working in the corporate sector? These unhappy and unsatisfied people are there all around you; from the tired aunt who wanted to travel the world but got stuck in a deadbeat job to the frustrated uncle who wanted to open his own bakery but ended up being an engineer! To the elder dissatisfied cousin who wanted to be an artist but ended up being a draftsman or the friend who is still languishing around in his job just because he can think of nothing else to do and ensures you know how bored, frustrated and annoyed he is! A young mind around them is bound to get the impression that this might not be the best way to carve out a living in the world. They would associate job = frustration/unfulfilled desires/dissatisfaction to name a few. The better option to most of them that seems viable is to start up something on their own and work on their own terms. The freedom that comes with it is another important aspect that is extremely attractive to the youth today. The freedom to work in hours of their choosing, on projects of their liking, with people they prefer and for people and companies who they value.
These two aspects combine to make entrepreneurship a really inspiring and a very lucrative career option. It is not that entrepreneurship does not require any hard work or time commitment. In fact, most entrepreneurs will tell you that technically, it is much tougher than doing a corporate job in the beginning. A lot of times it entails sleepless nights, back to back meetings, numerous presentations,
« MENTOR’S DESK
endless rejections along with a meager pay. But even after that, entrepreneurs are more content than a person who is working in a 9 to 5 job. It is this contentment that is driving most of the youth to become entrepreneurs today. It is because of the freedom that comes with being an entrepreneur. So even if it requires them to work harder than a regular job they are happy to put in the punishing hours because they are where they want to be and are living their dream!

After their basic education in municipal schools, very few underprivileged children end up studying further to specialise in a subject and pursue a career. When they realised that a whole lot more was needed to be done when it came to education of such children, the Rotary Club of Bombay, in association with MCGM and the NGO Vidya, launched ‘Bhavishya Yaan’ and has been working tirelessly for over five years to ensure that underprivileged children can also reach as high as the others By Gayatri Sahasrabuddhe

any children study at municipal schools, but how many receive quality education and go on to actually complete their schooling and studies to make good careers for themselves, remains questionable. The need of the hour remains a good command of the English language as well as quality education which keeps students engaged in schools and instils a faith, belief and confidence in themselves. With this intention at heart, The Rotary Club of Bombay set out to do just that. Five years ago, they launched ‘Bhavishya Yaan’ and took 40 under-privileged children studying at Ambedkar Municipal School, Worli, under their wing, providing them with coaching in conversational English, computer education and life skills absolutely free of cost. Today, this programme is changing the lives of over 1,200 children studying in 10 Municipal schools at any given time. The children are selected through interviews with the only prerequisite for selection being an interest to change their lives. he vision of IB-MYP sciences and technology is to contribute to the development of students as inquirers, scientifically literate, caring and responsible individuals, who think critically and creatively when solving problems and making decisions about aspects affecting themselves, others, and their social and natural environments. ‘Science Festival 2013-14’ was an ideal opportunity for students to appreciate the relationship between science and technology, and their roles in society. Students between the ages of 12 and 16 years celebrated the culmination of a weeklong intensive inquiry in the form of an exhibition in the school premises; showcasing the inputs of our young scientists and technologists. They shared their
understanding proudly with fellow students and parents who encourage them to do well in their jobs. To further enhance their classroom experiences, concepts which they were exposed to in class, were taken a step ahead during grade level workshops held on the day by the enthusiastic workshop leaders from 'Science Utsav', who believe in helping students understand concepts with hands-on activities which leave them with a sense of achievement. The day ended in an awards ceremony which focused on selecting one group per classroom for their outstanding contributions, and others for having participated with fervour in the 'Science festival 2013-14', because they were all winners after all!

LAVASA TIES UP WITH RUTGERS UNI TO OFFER CERTIFICATE IN TRAINING SKILLS
Lavasa Corporation Limited has entered into a partnership with the School of Social Work, a part of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey to offer a ‘Certificate in Training Skills’ program at Lavasa. The four day intensive program scheduled to be held at Lavasa from April 24 to April 27, 2014 is designed to provide comprehensive training and professional development to people interested in becoming trainers, or who want to upgrade their presentation and group leadership skills; and to supervisors who train their own workers to make presentations. Based on how adults learn, the skills covered in the program help increase knowledge retention and satisfaction from participants. Regardless of what the topic is, the skills acquired through the program help make presentations more effective. People with some work or volunteer experience as a trainer, teacher, or supervisor, and fluency in English can participate in the four day intensive program. Speaking about the tie up with Lavasa and the training program, Andy Germak, Executive Director from the School of Social Work at Rutgers University, said, “We are extremely pleased to partner with Lavasa Corporation Limited for the delivery of this training program in Lavasa.” He added, “Rutgers University is a pre-eminent institution of higher learning with a strong reputation in the U.S. and overseas; graduates of this certificate program will join a global community of successful professionals trained by Rutgers programs.”

E-commerce content writing likely to be the next big thing

MUMBAI | WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 26, 2014
People tend to judge an organisation by what they see and read on their website. Words can either alienate your customers or draw them even closer, says Naressa Coutinho
B
ranching out into e-commerce content writing was never part of the plan. It is not something writers dream about doing because the concept has never been romanced before. It is a desk job, yes, but one where a writer’s craft faces the real test. Virtual stores like Jabong, Myntra, flipkart etc. are gaining popularity because of the easeful shopping experience that happens within a matter of clicks. This is obviously based on informed decisions and it is here that the role of a content writer comes into play. He is someone who has seen and been with the product, and the little description besides each dress, bag or phone is his testimony for that product. The challenging part, though, is how well he can present this information to a customer who is short on time; who is in the habit of skimming through words; and who wants to be told a duck-for-aduck and not a horse-for-a-duck. I discovered that this style of writing was way tougher and more challenging than the editorial or print style. It changes the way you look at things. You learn to be responsible and economical with words. People want the real picture, the facts and at the same time they want a story; a purpose. I learnt that my role in the company is too crucial to be overlooked because I now hold a moral responsibility towards the company and their clients. People tend to judge an organisation by what they see and read on their website. Words can either alienate your customers or draw them even closer. Thus most companies insist on the knowledge of SEOs and meta-tile to ensure that you fine tune words to direct online
traffic for more sales. By now you would have linked this to advertising and social media marketing, and indeed website content does follow the same core principles of marketing. Ultimately, it is about the business of buying and selling, about promoting and convincing. The scope for content writers in the ecommerce sector is thus endless. While it would benefit a writer to have a forte in at least one field, be it fashion, technology, films or books, it is not a prerequisite. The aim is to provide well-researched matter to the customer in an easy and comprehensive tone, more as an informer than an expert. Creative writing for estores emerges in Lookbooks, blogs and networking platforms that aim at bridging the gap between the customer and the company. Here a content writer woos the customer with a ‘way of life’ and with what goes on behind the scenes, thereby making fans and regular clients of mere e-shoppers. You learn more from interactions with clients and you can use this to develop interesting product descriptions, feeds and fun posts. I often spend the first half hour of every morning updating myself and learning about things that could become the new rage. Ironically, what is trending today might just give you an eye-sore or an ear-ache tomorrow. A writer must thus be time’s best disciple. He/she should be aware of what’s trending and what is history. That way he is on the same page as his customers and knows what will sell and what won’t. E-commerce is the next hotspot for writers and probably the best to come!

The exams are just around the corner and it's a very stressful time for most youngsters. Being well prepared for the exams is just the tip of the iceberg, it's keeping your stress under control and your nerves calm and relaxed that will help you perform better. A tense and nervous mind can cause you to forget what you've learnt and affect your actual performance in the exams. City youngsters share their success mantra to keep it all together. I always study well in advance. I'm not the kind of person who studies at the last moment. This greatly helps me stay calmer than most others, because at the back of my mind I know I have been preparing well in advance. Ofcourse this doesn't mean I'm stress-free. Ofcourse I am! I generally resort to eating well and sleeping well to keep my body and mind rested. When I get tense, I do pray as this calms me down and helps me focus. — Albana Khatri, Training I'm a total last minute crammer. I've been trying to change this about myself but fail everytime. I'm only able to study at the end moment, unfortunately this keeps me extremely stressed at most times. It's only the stress that makes me study. I normally study early in the morning because my mind is the freshest then and I am able to absorb much more than I would at any other given time of the day. Normally when I get stressed I distract myself with the television or music. — Divya Saha, Adventure Sports
the minute I get tired.
When the exams are close I spend most of my time skimming through my syllabus and portion. I concentrate on reading and understanding the matter rather than mugging, this means that I end up spending most of my day with my nose in my books. This gives me little time to worry about the exams. I go out for walks to refresh myself and also listen to music and take breaks

desires to gallivant in the city in their own vehicle to avoid the hardships of entering crowded buses after waiting for may be around one hour. But is this the only solution? I don’t deny that public transport is not exceptionally good. But then is buying a car or bike for personal use a solution? Public transport is surely inefficient and inconvenient but then we can change this system. We belong to this city and have the right to demand a good transport system. All we need is to set some time aside and fight for this cause. We just frown over inefficiency but who
wants to work towards changing this scenario. Recently a friend from Singapore was discussing the transport system there. The transport system is so efficient that you don’t require a car; the stations are close to public places like malls, restaurants and other hang outs. This gives hope that our city with the amount spent on infrastructure, metros and all that, can have public transport which is easily accessible. Life in a city is not a bed of roses but we should try making it less thorny by being participants rather than just silent recipients.

he wheels were invented for faster transport but it is a pair of feet that can be more efficient. It is ironic that the tool for transport as opposed to walking on foot has become so incapable to fulfill its purpose. I’m sure this thought has occurred to most of the regular city travellers using roadways. Traffic is not pleasant especially when you have a routine or a plan that has time constraints. On your way to work or just meeting friends; you don’t want to be late! The traffic situation in Mumbai has heightened in the past decade. The streets are crowded beyond capacity. The automobile industry is surely ecstatic with the increase of private vehicle owners. In fact a biker friend pointed out that the increase in cars has made it difficult for bikers to pass through the narrow openings and reach the signal. My brother wants to be dropped by car to his workplace which is half an hour away despite the availability of convenient alternative transport facilities. So who should bare the repercussions of this trend? The answer is clear. Traffic is such a menace that people have actually stopped travelling during particular hours or as it is famously known, the peak hours which I’m still trying to decode as the exact time. The traffic causes havoc in personal routine too. You can’t be possibly wasting an hour or two travelling in rather uncomfortable situations and perform with efficiency in your professional life. It even takes a toll on personal relationships as you are just too stressed to devote quality time to your loved ones. I’m sure everyone

T
he menace of cyber crime could become the second biggest reason of financial frauds across enterprises in the next few years amid companies using technology across service lines in a bid to enhance performance, a survey by consultancy firm PwC said. About 48 per cent of the respondents said the risk of cyber crime had increased, up from 39 per cent in 2011, the PwC 2014 Global Economic Crime Survey said. Also, 45 per cent of financial services organisations affected by frauds reported being victims of cyber crime— nearly three times the frequency as reported by all other industry sectors. Cyber crime ranked fourth (24 per cent) after asset misappropria-
tion (69 per cent), procurement fraud (29 per cent) and, bribery and corruption (27 per cent) in the tally. However, 30 per cent respondents said cyber crime would pose the highest risk to their companies, next only to asset misappropriation (40 per cent). "The results appear to reflect the mega trends of global expansion into less-developed markets and the expectation of increasing incidents of cyber crime as more technology is deployed in all areas of business. It is not just a technology problem. It is a business strategy problem," it said. About one in four of respondents said they have experienced a cyber crime and over 11 per cent of these suffered financial losses of more than USD one million. About 14 per cent said the financial impact of
cyber crime was between USD 100,000 and USD 1 million, while six per cent believed it is between USD 1-5 million. "This underscores the challenge of the threat. Many entities do not have clear insight into whether their networks and the data contained therein have been breached, and they don't know what has been lost or its value," the report said. This poses risks in a global business ecosystem that is increasingly reliant on both technology and intellectual property — and that values transparency, it added."In a changing technological landscape, sophisticated adversary takes advantage by attacking new weaknesses. This is why it is essential for organisations to at least try to keep pace with the criminals who threaten them," the report advised.

"This is a welcome move as independent directors would now be able to spend more time on a company," Prime Database Managing Director Pranav Haldea said. As per the data, one person is independent director of 14 companies, while four each are on boards of 13 firms. Yet another serves on boards of 12 entities. Three of them serve 11 firms, while seven persons hold directorships in 10 entities. The report said that more worrying was the present state of compliance with Clause 49 of the Listing Agreement regarding composition

he Power Grid Corporation has been kept out of the proposed CPSE Exchange Traded Fund (ETF), which will now consist of 10 companies, including ONGC, Coal India, GAIL and Indian Oil. The Finance Ministry has filed the offer document with market regulator Sebi for the Central Public Sector Enterprises ETF, which could fetch the exchequer about Rs 3,000 crore. "The offer document for CPSE ETF was filed last week. It will now consist of 10 scrips, instead of 11, as Power Grid has been kept out of it," a finance ministry official said. The ETF is expected to hit the markets next month, the official added. Other companies in the ETF basket are REC, Oil India, Container Cor-
poration, Power Finance, Engineers India and Bharat Electronics Ltd. The official said Power Grid was excluded because the scrip has a oneyear lock-in period since its follow-on public offer in December. He added that although a share sale in Engineers India took place in February, it would still be included as the offer was made after the Empowered Group of Ministers had approved the CPSE ETF. The EGoM headed by Finance Minister P Chidambaram last month approved floating the CPSE ETF. The government has so far raised about Rs 5,093.87 crore through stake sales in PSUs. As per the revised estimates in the Interim Budget, the disinvestment target was lowered to Rs 16,027 crore in this financial year from Rs 40,000 crore.
Mines Ministry Examining 5% Export Duty On Iron Ore Pellets By A Business Reporter
T
he Mines Ministry is examining the recently levied 5 per cent export duty on iron ore pellets following representations from various manufacturers opposing its imposition, and would write to the Finance Ministry on the matter soon. The Mines Ministry was not consulted by the Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC) or by the Finance Ministry when the duty was imposed on January 27, said a senior official. He said the Mines Ministry has received several representations opposing imposition of the duty. When asked about this, Mines Minister Dinsha Patel said: "We will give whatever representation is required to the Finance and Commerce Ministries. This is an

of the board. "As many as 17 per cent of the NSE-listed companies (247 companies) are presently non-compliant. With Sebi's new norms of not treating nominee directors as independent, the non-compliance will go up to 22 per cent (319 companies)." At present, nominee directors are being considered independent in as many as 382 cases in 227 companies. In 104 firms, conversion from independent to non-independent will make the firm non-compliant with Listing Agreement norm. Regarding tenure, Sebi has mandated that an independent director cannot serve on a company's board for more than two successive terms of five years each.
he Thane District Consumer Redressel Forum has ordered ICICI bank to pay a compensation of Rs 50,000 to an account holder for imposing penalty on him without intimating the change in the minimum balance requirement. According to the complainant, advocate B L Sharma, the bank in September 2008 deducted Rs 843 from his savings account as a penalty for not keeping a minimum balance. Sharma contended that the minimum balance as stipulated by the bank was Rs 5,000, and he had that much money in the account. The bank deducted another Rs 843 in December 2008, for the same reason. When Sharma issued a notice to the bank, it replied that the minimum balance should be Rs 10,000 and not Rs 5,000. However, Sharma contended that the bank had never informed him about raising the minimum balance requirement.

issue concerned with the Finance Ministry, they have done it as per their own way. We will soon give our own report on it." Speaking to reporters after presenting National Geo- science Awards-2012, he also said that domestic pellet manufacturers need to be encouraged as it will help in removing the scarcity of iron ore. Opposing the duty, various pellet manufacturers and their industry associations have given representation to the government, crying foul and terming the move "retrograde". They had said in past that the move would lead to closure of many units and the country will be deprived of valuable foreign exchange. According to industry estimates, India's pellet production capacity is currently at about 60 million tonne and has risen manifold since 2010-11.
He then asked the bank to return the remaining amount of Rs 5,707 and close the account. The bank did not respond, so he moved the Thane District Consumer Redressel Forum. Forum president Umesh Jhawalikar and member N D Kadam in the order last week held, said: "The bank has not produced any proof of having intimated about increasing the minimum balance limit. "As the respondents are the financial and banking institutes, it is essential that it has transparency in its dealings... Hence, it has been proved that the bank has not given credible service to the complainant," the forum said. It ordered the bank to return within 30 days the balance amount in the account and close it. It also directed the bank to pay a compensation of Rs 50,000 to the complainant within 30 days. When contacted, an ICICI Bank spokesperson was not immediately available for comments. (PTI)

Malinga, Thirimanne shape Sri Lanka’s thrilling win SPORTS

FLAIR IN THE AIR: Pakistan's Umar Gul jumps to celebrate the wicket of Sri Lanka’s Kusal Perera.
F
ATULLAH: Speedster Lasith Malinga’s brilliant five-wicket haul under pressure and opener Lahiru Thirimanne’s second ODI century helped Sri Lanka script a thrilling 12-run win over Pakistan in a nail-biting opening match of the Asia Cup cricket tournament, here today. Malinga produced a sensational spell of death bowling, picking up key wickets at crucial junctures, to ensure the win for his side with seven balls to spare at the Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Stadium. Chasing an impsoing 297 for victory, Pakistan were on course for a remarkable victory before Malinga came up with a fiery spell to bowl out the ‘Men in Green’ for 284 in 48.5 overs. Malinga first sent back dangerman Shahid Afridi (4) and well-settled skipper Misbahul-Haq (73) in a span of three deliveries in his eighth over before returning back to dismiss Saeed Ajmal (10) and Bilawal Bhatti (18) in his final over to finish with figures of 5 for 52. Earlier, Thirimanne struck a fine 110-ball 102 to power Sri Lanka to a challenging 296 for six. Thirimanne hit 11 fours and a six in his innings and starred in a 161-run stand with Kumar Sangakkara (67) for the second wicket to lay the foundation for a huge score. Pakistan tried to make a comeback in the middle overs as they picked up a few wick-
ets, before skipper Angelo Matthews provided the late charge, cracking a 50-ball 55, to take Sri Lanka close to the 300-mark. Pakistan failed to build partnerships at the top during their run chase as they lost their first four wickets for 121 before Misbah and Umar Akmal (74) led a sensational fightback with attacking fifties. Both added 121 runs for the fifth-wicket partnership to bring Pakistan back into the game but Malinga held his nerves and produced a matchwinning spell to grab full points for his team. Pakistan started their run chase on an attacking note, with opener Sharjeel Khan
picking up quite a few boundaries before being dismissed by medium pacer Suranga Lakmal for 26. Ahmed Shehzad and Mohammad Hafeez led their team’s recovery with a 49-run stand for the second wicket but Sri Lanka fought back with quick strikes as Pakistan slipped to 83 for three inside 14 overs. While Shehzad was cleaned up by left-arm spinner Chaturanga de Silva for 28, Hafeez was trapped in front of the wickets for 18 by Angelo Mathews.Misbah and Sohaib Maqsood (17) steadied Pakistan with their cautious approach as they reached 121 for three before spinner Sachithra
HAPPY WITH HIS TON: Sri Lanka’s Lahiru Thirimanne acknowledges the crowd after scoring a century.
India look for turnaround in Asia Cup By Tapan Mohanta
F
ATULLAH (Bangladesh): Embarrassed in South Africa and New Zealand, regional powerhouse India would hope for a turnaround under a new captain when they take on a troubled Bangladesh in their Asia Cup opener here tomorrow. For the five-time champions India, the build up to the 12th edition of the regional tournament has been quite similar to that of 2012 when they landed here on the back of eight successive Test defeats in England and Australia. Now they have come here after losing to South Africa 0-1 in Tests and 0-2 in ODIs. They suffered similar humiliation at the hands of New Zealand. The world champion side capped their two overseas tours with four successive defeats in One-dayers. However, playing against an opponent, who are struggling with their own set of problems and against whom they enjoy a good record, India would hope to finally notch up their first win in the 2014 calender. Bangladesh’s attacking opener Tamim Iqbal has been ruled out of the event because of a neck strain and their all-rounder Shakib-Al-Hasan will also miss the action against India due to his two-match ban for showing lewd gestures on live TV. Fitness doubts also hang over veteran pacer Mashrafe Mortaza (swollen knee) while captain Mushfiqur Rahim is nursing an injured finger that had kept him out of the two T20Is against Sri Lanka earlier this month. Adding to the woes, the host nation
clearly did not give a happy picture with selection-related controversy marring the their build-up. Skipper Musfiqur hit out at their chief selector for picking the squad without consulting him. All this gives India a good chance to make a winning start even without the finishing abilities of skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who was ruled out due to a side-strain, and left-handed Suresh Raina. Apart from the usual expectation of being the captain, Virat Kohli will also be the Indian batting mainstay as India would take solace from the fact that the stylish right hander’s average against Bangladesh is a staggering 122. Kohli, who totals 732 with four hundreds and three fifties, was the leading run-getter
in the last Asia Cup, including tournament’s highest 185 against Pakistan. After being made the captain as Dhoni’s replacement for the first time in a tri-series in the West Indies also involving Sri Lanka, Kohli has one loss and seven wins under his belt. But Asia Cup may prove to be his biggest challenge as games against Sri Lanka and especially Pakistan would be high pressure contests. Test regular Cheteshwar Pujara will lend stability to the middle order but more than that India would want him to reinvent himself from the classical mould to suit to the demands of the shorter version. With Kohli having adapted himself to No 3 and Ajinkya Rahane at No 4, it remains to be seen where the Saurashtra batsman is accomodated in the order., But as the tournament will proceed to the business end, India’s biggest worry will be to find somebody who is as dependable as Dhoni in crisis situations. While many have seen Dinesh Karthik’s ability as a hard-hitting batsmen in the IPL, it’s time for him to prove himself in the Oneday format while there would be pressure on Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin down the order. In such a scenario, India would look to make use of Stuart Binny to play the role of finisher, who at the same time can be handy with his medium pace bowling. But overall, it would be an astounding feat for Kohli if India go all the way to retain their supremacy in the subcontinent’s mega tournament.
29
Senanayake got the latter caught at deep midwicket by Chaturanga de Silva. With six wickets in hand and still requiring 175 runs to win, Pakistan looked in all sorts of trouble with their innings in complete disarray. But the pair of wicketkeeper-batsman Akmal and Misbah combined well and launched a counter offensive against the Lankans to regain the lost ground. Both played aggressively and treated the loose deliveries with disdain to take Pakistan to 240 for 4, requiring 57 off 48 balls. Lakmal returned to scalp the prized wicket of Akmal, who couldn’t stop himself as he went for a massive drive on the up but only managed an outside edge to keeper Sangakkara.Akmal’s 72-ball stay at the crease was decorated with seven fours and three sixes. Pakistan lost the plot after that and could not recover from the jolt as they lost the last five wickets for just 43 runs. Misbah also ran out of his patience and was dismissed for 73 (84 balls, 4x4, 2x6) by Malinga. Brief Scores: Sri Lanka: 296 for six in 50 overs (Lahiru Thirimanne 102, Kumar Sangakkara 67, Angelo Mathews not out 55; Umar Gul 2/38). Pakistan: 284 all out in 48.5 overs (Umar Akmal 74, Misbah-ul-Haq 73; Lasith Malinga 5/52)
Beating India is no longer an upset, says Mashrafe Mortaza
M
IRPUR (Bangladesh): Bangladesh’s premier pacer Mashrafe Mortaza today said that beating a heavyweight Indian cricket team is no longer considered as an “upset” as the hosts have defeated them on a few occasions in the near past including the last edition of Asia Cup. “I don’t count a win against India as an upset. We have done it before. They are a good team in sub-continent. We have that in our mind,” the 30-year-old said ahead of their Asia Cup opener against India. Mortaza feels that playing infront of home crowd would be a boost and the Indian team will also have to make some adjustment having played their last couple of series in South Africa. “They have been playing on different wickets in SA and NZ. We are playing in front of a home support. If we can come up with our best cricket I think we can fight it out. God willing, we will.” But Mortaza was quick to add that they would have to be in the top of their game to beat a world class side like India. “They have a world-class batting line-up, they are never weak. Their recent performance in the sub-continent has been great. It won’t be an easy task, and we have to play our best cricket. We beat them two years ago, the most important thing is what happens tomorrow,” he said.
Biggest win for Somdev after Del Potro retires hurt in Dubai
30
SPORTS
D
UBAI: India number one Somdev Devvarman today recorded the biggest win of his career by beating world number five Juan Martin Del Potro but the victory came when the Argentine retired midway into the first round match of the Dubai Duty Free Championships, here. Somdev, ranked 78, had won the first set 76 (3) in an hour and seven minutes and immediately after this, Del Potro took a medical timeout due to pain in his left wrist. The Argentine second seed found it tough to continue and conceded the match. Somdev had lost 4-6 4-6 to Del Potro last year at this very event in the pre-quarterfinals. This is Somdev’s first ever win against a top-5 player who is also a Grand Slam champion. Del Potro is the 2009 US Open winner. Somdev has competed against the legends of the game, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic but hasn’t won against any of them, although he fought well against all these multiple Grand Slam winners.
Indian football team for Bangladesh friendly named
M
ARGAO: Chief coach of the national football team Wim Koevermans today announced a squad of 20 players for an international friendly match against Bangladesh to be held here on March 5. The friendly at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Fatorda will be preceded by a preparatory camp. While Pune FC goalkeeper Amrinder Singh and Churchill Brothers striker Balwant Singh got their maiden call-up in the camp, No 1 ‘keeper Subrata Paul, Mumbai FC defender Sandesh Jhingan and Alwyn George of Dempo SC have made a comeback to the team. The squad will assemble in Goa on March 1, while players like Amrinder Singh, Gurjinder Kumar, Sandesh Jhingan, Arnab Mondal, Mehtab Hossain, Lalrindika Ralte and Aibhorlang Khongjee would be joining the team on March 2 due to their I-League commitments. The 20-member squad is as follows: Goalkeepers: Karanjit Singh (Salgaocar SC), Amrinder Singh (Pune FC), Subrata Paul (FC Vestsjaelland). Defenders: Denzil Franco (Churchill Brothers), Arnab Mondal (East Bengal), Aibhorlang Khongjee (Mohun Bagan), Sandesh Jhingan (Mumbai FC), Gurjinder Kumar (Pune FC), Narayan Das (Dempo SC). Midfielders: Mehtab Hossain, Lalrindika Ralte (both East Bengal), Lenny Rodrigues (Churchill Brothers), Rocus Lamare (Salgaocar), Alwyn George, Clifford Miranda (both Dempo), Francis Fernandes (Salgaocar), Victorino Fernandes (Sporting Clube de Goa). Forwards: Sunil Chhetri, Robin Singh (both Bengaluru FC) and Balwant Singh (Churchill Brothers).
He lost to Nadal in 2011 at Indian Wells Masters in two close sets and the same year he had lost to Federer at this very Dubai event. Last year in his second meeting against the Swiss legend at the Roland Garros, he suffered a tame defeat in the second round. Against Djokovic, he lost in straight sets at the Miami Masaters last year. Before today’s match, one of the biggest wins were against Croatia’s Marin Cilic (world number 15) and Ivo Karlovic (world number 25) in 2009 and against Cyprus’ world number 22 Marcos Baghdatis (world number 22) in 2010. Somdev was well prepared coming into this tournament as he had won the Delhi Open Challenger tournament on Suday. He had reached the semi-finals of the Chennai and Kolkata events in the preceding weeks. The Indian traded a break with Del Potro before pushing the match into tie-breaker. He kept hitting it on the backhand of the Argentine, inducing unforced errors from his bigbodied rival.

IN BRIEF Selection posers for victorious South Africa
CAPE TOWN: South Africa face a selection dilemma ahead of the decisive third Test against Australia, starting at Newlands Saturday, despite a convincing 231-run second Test win in Port Elizabeth. At least two changes seem likely, and the uncertainty of the selectors about their final eleven was indicated by their naming of a 16-man squad for Cape Town. The groin injury suffered by left-arm fast-medium bowler Wayne Parnell will reopen the debate about whether to pick an all-rounder or a specialist bowler. Ryan McLaren, ruled out of the Port Elizabeth Test after suffering concussion in the first Test loss at Centurion, was Monday named in the squad for Newlands.
Federer begins another revival
