A DISASTER WAITING TO HAPPEN - AGAIN This monsoon, a repeat of the aftermath of the 26/7 deluge could occur in the Bainganwadi slums of Govandi, thanks to the dangerously choked up Mithi River

The silt and plastic-filled gutter in the pictures above and at top right is actually the dry ‘bed’ of the Mithi River.

ne shudders in fear when one thinks of the 26/7 deluge of 2005 that swept Mumbai. In that great flood, a choked up Mithi River in Kurla played a major role, due to which the entire area including Air India colony in Kalina and other parts of Kurla remained submerged in water for ten days. Now, local residents of Bainganwadi area in Govandi fear the repeat of a Mithi river this monsoon unless civic authorities wake up. Areas like Chikalwadi, Kamla Raman

Nagar, at the back of the Anjuman Rafiqul Islam School, and Adarsh Nagar Road No.12, all exist right below the mountain of garbage that is the Deonar dumping ground. In the middle of Chikalwadi and Kamla Raman Nagar, there exists a 12-feet-wide nullah, which has been filled with debris and leveled, allegedly by local land mafias, say locals. Unauthorized shanties too have come up on either side of this choked up canal. And each of them is sold for Rs 3 to Rs 4 lakh to unsuspecting slum dwellers. Continued on pg 8 «

CITY OPINIONS

Given a choice, would you rate Mumbai as the safest city in India? Darshan Panchal Engineer Yes. There is too much crime here, but Mumbai is still safer than many other cities in the country. Nidhi Jasani Doctor Yes. Crime will always exist as long as society exists, but you can still wander about at any given point of time. Shivshankar Dey MBA Student Might be. Mumbai police have their own method for securing the city and tackling crime, other cities do not have that potential.

Shivraj Nervekar Cinematographer No. There are many such cities where the police have shown exemplary results in their efforts at providing security for their citizens.

Amol Kale Hotel owner Yes. There are several instances where the city police have failed, but they have made extraordinary efforts post some dreadful events like 26/11. The first exam of the final semester starts with goof-ups in college seat number allocations and exam centres; MU misses out student names from the exam centre lists; allots two exam centres to some students

By Yatin Ingle

W

hile the Mumbai University (MU) has begun with its final year degree college board exams, it also started making goof-ups. As the students were set for the first exam of Bachelor of Arts (B.A), they got a shocker when they entered the exam centre and found that their names have been missing from the centre list. As if this was not enough, the hall tickets carried two exam centres and were tagged 'OR' to choose from the given centres due to which the students feared problems and created chaos at the exam centre. The MU began the final semester year Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com.) and B.A. exams on Tuesday. As per the procedure of the examinations, the varsity has to send a list of students appearing for the exams to the exam centre. Once the list is forwarded , the varsity has to notify and confirm the number of students and hall ticket numbers with the exam centre. Finally, when the students appear for the exams at the centres, they are verified as per the list provided by the varsity. The varsity should note the exam centre list with detailed address and location of the exam centres. As per the schedule, a few stu-

xxx dents reported for the Third Year B.A. (T.Y.B.A.) exams at G.N Khalsa College at Matunga whereas others reported at G.N Gurunanak College in the same locality as the hall ticket carried the exam centres as G.N Khalsa College 'OR' G.N Gurunanak College. Students got confused and reported to either one of the two centres. As the students reached the cen-

tres , they were shocked to know that their names were not on the centre list. With a fear of missing the exams, the students sat in arbitrary classrooms to appear for the exam. As the examiner cross checked the hall tickets, the students were asked to leave the classroom as they did not belong to that specific exam centre. Soon the students created chaos while ques-

tioning the college authorities. A student, whose name had been missing from the exam centre list at Sakhalin College said, “Firstly, the hall tickets carried two exam centres and we students thought that we could appear from any one of the given exam centres. After we reached the centres, we were told that our names are not present in the examination list and we were asked to leave the class. The MU is showing a very casual attitude, it has risked our careers. We wrote the papers but we hope the goof up will not lose us marks or cause errors in the results!”. According to Khalsa College authorities, the MU updated the examination list of the students without notifying the college. A list was put up online on March 22, and the varsity updated the list later. A similar incident had taken place last April during the T.Y.B.Com. examination when the varsity had misprinted the names and exam centres on the hall tickets, creating chaos amongst the students. When the ADC tried to contact Dr Padma Deshmukh, Controller of Exam and Dr Naresh Chandra, Pro Vice Chancellor, MU, both were unable for comment.

fter more than four decades of steady campaigning, the Union government has finally included disabled children under the Right to Education (RTE) Act, said Dr. Mithu Alur in Mumbai recently. The founder chairperson of ADAPT (Able Disabled All People Together), earlier known as The Spastics Society of India, was speaking at 'It's Magic', the concert that took place at the Nehru Centre Auditorium. Dr. Alur also talked of the need for the society to come out of their entrenched beliefs about the ability of these children to do something. "When I talk of reservation, corporates ask me if the disabled will be able to actually work. I tell them that they are humans like the rest of us, just with a bit of a difference". She mentioned yesteryear film stars Nargis and Sunil Dutt who worked for the rights of these children. "Sunilji even took the issue to the parliament and fought for it tirelessly", she said. The concert itself was a huge hit, with the performances enthusiastically applauded. The band Medusa performed 'Jai Ho' and the soulful and inspiring 'Aikla Chalo' as the entranced audience clapped to the slow beats of the song. Violin maestro Sunita Bhuyan

We are 100-million strong and we will be heard, Malini Chib, founder and chairperson of the ADAPT Rights Group (ARG), and author of the novel, ‘One Little Finger,’announced the release of the organisation's political charter, at Nehru Centre in Worli, on Friday. celebrated the spirit of the joy of giving. But the highlight of the evening was a play featuring spastic children and the students of the Army Public School among others which was presented by Raell Padamsee’s ACE production, in collaboration with ADAPT. The play was based on 'It’s Magic', highlighting the idea that magic lies in everything. Padamsee’s production

had exceptional sets, that looked magical from every angle. They were well-matched with colorful lighting making them look spooky and at the same time fairy-talish. The entire stage was made to look mystical. Chief guests for the evening, Dia Mirza and veteran actress Tanuja, were also seen enjoying the show. “It is a show everyone must watch

because it has lessons on life", said Dia, who has been associated with ADAPT foundation for years. Tanuja added, "It was a very emotional performance. I was blown away. These kids are amazing!" The evening concluded with all the children dancing to the song 'Disco Deewane' from the film 'Student of the Year'.

Staff on poll duty: Govt’s electronic bridge SETU closed till elections

6,000 workers will abandon desks and move out on election duty

Applicants will now have to travel all the way from Bhayandar to Thane for documents

By Khushboo Panjabi

O

ver 6,000 Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) employees have been assigned election duty, owing to which various departments of the civic body will face a tough time. The property tax department will fail to complete their target of Rs.4,400 crore for property tax collection, falling short of Rs.1,400 crore. Of the 670 officials in the department, 350 have been put on election duty. An official from the Assessor & Collector department said, “More than half of the officials from the Assessment & Collection department have been given election duty. The possibility of completing the target is less as inspectors and clerks cannot process the property tax collections along with

The data states that 230 of the 375 tax inspectors and 120 of the 288 clerks in the octroi and property tax departments have been given election duty. However, the 6,000 odd workers working for the elections have to report to the election commission, prepare the electoral rolls and distribute photo ID cards of the voters. Almost 75,000 government workers have been assigned for election duty at the 10,500 polling booths in the city. the elections”. Officials of the water department are also involved in election work but the chief engineer of hydraulics department, Ramesh Bamble, has requested the state government to relieve the 250 water department officials. The administration has been constantly writing to the state election department, requesting exemption from providing its staff for auxillary work, as this work keeps them diverted from performing their primary du-

ties of providing basic civic services to the citizens. The civic body has now demanded compensation for its rented vehicles and properties from the state election department. Section 61 of the Representation of the People Act of 1950 and 1951 states that compensation must be given to the civic body, in lieu of the services and assets provided to the government. The BMC has thus demanded the same with regard to the previous elections. khushboo.panjabi@afternoondc.in

onsidered to be an “electronic bridge” between the common man and government agencies to procure various documents, the only SETU office in Bhayandar has been closed till elections. Reason: Most of the staff has been deputed on election duty. A display board to this effect has been installed outside the SETU office situated in the ground floor of the Community Hall building in Bhayandar (west). The E-governance of the ambitious SETU project ensures that people will have access to various documents or certification needed from the government either at the click of a button on a personal computer, or personal delivery of documents at the SETU office within 15 days. All that is required is to submit the hard copy at the collection window along with the required documentation, following which the applicants are informed of the status online as well as via

part from picking up staffers from routine departments of the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC), the district administration has also roped in a significant number of employees from the emergency wings including the Fire Brigade, Health and Water Supply departments for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Ironically staffers with physical disabilities have also not been spared from poll-related duty, informed a senior municipal official who also claimed that the MBMC has already dashed-off a letter to the State Election department requesting them not to depute staffers from emergency wings that could adversely affect dayto-day essential services.

In the next two bizarre cases, the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of the customs searched Jet Airways flight 9W537 coming from Dubai

and found three kilograms of gold bars worth Rs.82.43 lakh. “The gold was kept inside a hidden cavity behind the mirror of the toilet of the economy class,” said an officer. The next search was carried out by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) following tip-off about the gold hidden in the Jet Airways flight 9W543 coming from

Dubai. Sleuths found the same amount of gold hidden in the same fashion inside the toilet. In the last case, sleuths held an Indian passenger, Vinay Kumar Balkrishnan who had landed by Air India flight AI984 from Dubai and had evaded the immigration and customs checks and directly headed towards the international transit lounge

meant for 'international to domestic passengers' by “hoodwinking” the Air India staff. “He was handing over the gold to another domestic passenger who was heading to Delhi, who too has been arrested,” another officer said. Seven kilograms of plain gold jewellery worth Rs. 1.92 crore were found on his person.

challenging enhanced charge Defence lawyer argues that the inclusion of section 376(e) is not applicable against the three common convicts in the two rape cases By Philip Varghese

T

he Sessions Court which is yet to give the quantum of sentence to the four convicted persons in the 2013 photojournalist gang rape case, adjourned the matter till Wednesday after the defence lawyers informed the court that they are moving the Bombay High Court challenging the recent inclusion of section 376 (e) against three common convicts for repeat offences. The Sessions Court, on Monday, had agreed to include section 376 (e) of Indian Penal Code (IPC) which attracts punishment of life imprisonment till death or the death penalty, on the convicted persons based on an application filed by Special Public Prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam last Friday. During the hearing, defence lawyer Advocate Prakash Salsingikar informed Principal Sessions Judge Shalini Phansalkar Joshi that he would be filing an application in the High Court challenging the new

charges. The three accused, who were found guilty in the gang rape of a telephone operator July 31, were awarded life sentence till death, but they have denied the charges. Vijay Jadhav (20), Kasim Hafiz Sheikh alias Kasim Bengali (20) and Salim Ansari (27) were also found guilty in the gang rape of a woman photojournalist in the Shakti Mills premises on August 22, last year. SPP Nikam said that in view of their repeat offences in the two cases, they could be tried under the enhanced charges. Nikam also examined the investigation officer

in the telephone operator case and a police constable to prove the charges of repeat offence on Tuesday. Speaking to the ADC, defence lawyer advocate R.G. Gadgil said, “We are filing the appeal in the High Court on Wednesday morning and we will surely mention this on Wednesday itself challenging the inclusion of section 376 (e) on the convicted persons. This is not applicable in this case.” It will be recalled that on Monday, the three common convicts while pleading not guilty had refused to sign the copy of the charge document, stating that they were yet to go through the judgement in the telephone operator's case. Also, during the proceedings, the court had rejected the defence plea to stay the trial when defence lawyers had said that they want to move the HC, challenging the order to frame additional charges based on the application filed by Nikam. philip.varghese@afternoondc.in

HJS seeks ban on ‘Ragini MMS 2’, threatens stir By A Staff Reporter

T

he Hindu Janjagruti Samiti (HJS) has demanded a ban on the movie 'Ragini MMS 2' as well as deportation of actor Sunny Leone from India in its memorandum submitted to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The organisation has also threatened to agitate in front of movie halls which screen the film, if it was not banned. In order to press the demand to stop the movie from being exhibited, the HJS said that is 'educating' movie theatre owners, to stop the movie from being screened. Calling 'Ragini MMS 2' "an assault on Bharatiya culture, dignity and Hindu deities" in its memorandum to the CFBC, the HJS said the movie begins with the chanting of the 'Shree Hanuman Chalisa'

which is sacred to Hindus and held the CFBC responsible for 'increase in communal and social tension'. "Notorious pornstar Sunny Leone plays a lead role in the film. By making use of Shri Hanuman, a deity known to have control over his organs and whose character was ideal, religious sentiments of Hindus have been hurt to a great extent," the HJS memorandum said. "Therefore, HJS has demanded that the movie should be immediately banned and pornstar Sunny Leone, who is leading the young generation of Bharat to carnal desires should be deported from Bharat," the memorandum said. "Presently, morality in society has reached its nadir. Offences such as rapes, atrocities on women and molestation of women are on the increase every day.

A disaster waiting... Continued from pg 1 « The nullah water that used to flow down to the creek cannot now join with it, thus posing an immense hazard to the surrounding area during the monsoon.Thuis is in addition to the health issues caused by diseases like dengue, malaria, typhoid and asthma among the local populace, especially children. When ADC spoke to Ram Kadam, Asst. Engineer (Bldg & Factory dept.) of M-East ward, he said, “We take action on illegal slums by demolishing them. But if we demolish these huts in the morning, by evening they are rebuilt again. We have informed Shivaji Nagar police to book these local land mafia under the Zopadapatti Dada Act. But police seldom take action. When we demand police protection during our demolition drives in the area, Shivaji Nagar police is unable to provide it to us.” Not surprisingly, disgruntled locals have another version. One of them, Salim Khan, laments, “We have complained verbally and in writing repeatedly to M-East ward officials but in vain. Many anti-social elements like tadipars, (externees) and those listed in attempt to murder cases thrive in the area and grab land illegally to construct these unauthorized shanties. When we complain to M-East ward officials, they only take action against poor slum dwellers and contract laborers constructing these shanties, instead of catching land sharks.” Locals also allege that the personal assistants of some corporators of the region are also involved in land grabbing and illegal construction of shanties. The corporators

themselves turn a blind eye to this activity of their socalled assistants. And then there are the electricity mafias who run riot in these slum pockets and who provide illegal connections to these unauthorized shanties. When contacted in the matter, senior police inspector Radheshyam Agarwal of Shivaji Nagar police station said, “We give police protection to BMC demolition squads every time they ask for it. However, within 10-15 days after a demolition drive, the shanties are erected once again. When BMC approaches us again, we inspect the illegal sites, carry out panchnamas and tell them to file FIRs against known land mafias. But BMC officials develop cold feet as they do not want to get into the wrong books of these mafias. We ourselves can’t file an FIR against anyone. Only the BMC can tell us about the illegal shanties as they have special teams to inspect such constructions. Most of these officials are hand-in-glove with local land mafias as they receive a cut from each and every illegal shanty. Without the BMC’s knowledge, not a single unauthorized construction can occur in Mumbai slums.” Speaking about the health of slum children in these localities, Dr Etheshan Shaikh, director of S N Hospital in Govandi, states, “As children play around in the dirt and filth covered soil of the nullah level with the garbage dump, they are infected with diseases like dengue, malaria, typhoid and asthma.” Garbage vehicles, instead of dumping their loads in the the dumping ground, also drop garbage in the nullah . fter having fired a salvo at NCP chief Sharad Pawar, BJP candidate from Mumbai North-East Lok Sabha constituency, Dr Kirit Somaiya yesterday filed yet another complaint of violation of model code of conduct against NCP leaders for what he called attempts to urge voters to vote twice. The senior BJP leader lodged a complaint with Election Commission of India against legislative assembly speaker

Dilip Walse-Patil, sitting NCP MP Sanjay D. Patil and NCP MLA Dilip Mohite Patil for their controversial remarks made during their meeting held on March 21 at Ghatkopar. The leaders, he argued had clearly asked voters to vote twice. Somaiya in his complaint with the EC has stated that NCP MLA Dilip Mohite-Patil had appealed to the people to vote at Maval in Pune district and also come back to Mumbai and vote for the NCP candidate. The BJP leader

demanded that the EC investigate the cases of alleged attempts at election rigging, plans for massive bogus voting by NCP, derecognition of NCP, action against the NCP leaders and investigation and action over why the police, local election officers did not take timely action. On March 24, the BJP leader had lodged a complaint against NCP president Sharad Pawar for asking the Mathadi workers to vote twice. The EC has given Pawar time till March 26 to respond to its notice.

Sources have claimed that Ashok Chavan's insistence for nomination from his hometown Nanded had created a precarious situation before the party high command. Chavan apparently had made it clear that either he or his wife, Ameeta, should be considered. After the governor refused permission to the CBI to prosecute Chavan for his involvement in the Adarsh case, it appeared that he was on the comeback trail. It may be recalled that Ashok Chavan had to quit as Maharashtra chief minister after his name figured in the Adarsh Housing Society scam in 2010. Ponder awhile… “The unforgivable crime is soft hitting. Do not hit at all if it can be avoided; but never hit softly.” — Theodore Roosevelt

Punished for opposing Narendra Modi? B

JP senior leader Jaswant Singh was one of those who had expressed his disapproval when the election of Narendra Modi as the chairman of the Lok Sabha poll campaign committee took place in Goa. It was apparent to the BJP leadership that he was against any top power being given to Modi. L.K. Advani sulked and never went to that meeting. Advani was a senior leader and Modi went to him and pacified him. What was clear to Modi was that Jaswant Singh could be a source of trouble for him. From that day on Jaswant was a marked man and was not in the favoured list of Modi. And thanks to his anti-Modi stance, Jaswant Singh was not allowed to contest from Barmer. That hurt Jaswant Singh and he said that even a peon would not be treated like that. Jaswant Singh was humiliated and ‘dishonoured’. He declared that BJP president Rajnath Singh and Rajasthan chief minister Vasundhara Raje had plotted against him and gave him a ticket from a constituency which he disapproved. He stated there was a conspiracy against him. What becomes apparent is that Rajnath Singh has done exactly what Modi wanted. Narendra Modi evidently does not want Jaswant Singh in his cabinet. Jaswant has held top positions in the cabinet, has excellent record for party work but he committed the unpardonable error of opposing Modi’s choice as prime minister. Jaswant Singh is not the one to take ‘a dishonour lying down’. He quickly went to the election office and filed his nomination for the Lok Sabha seat from Barmer as an independent. What has become clear is that any leader in BJP who opposed the sole leadership of Narendra Modi will be inviting trouble for himself. Sushma Swaraj was the one who criticised Rajnath Singh when Jaswant Singh was denied a ticket but now she has taken back her words and accepted the party decision.

ARNATAKA has a history of voting against the national mood. So, if the dominant swing countrywide is in favour of Narendra Modi and the BJP, the Congress can hope to do well in this southern state. That is, if its internal squabbles don’t overwhelm the party and sabotage its prospects. The Congress grapevine is buzzing with speculation about possible backstabbing by a section of the state unit opposed to chief minister Siddaramaiah. Party circles fear that this section may secretly work to defeat nominees close to the CM in a bid to cripple him. A poor tally is bound to reflect negatively on him and can be used by his detractors within to mount pressure for his removal. Remember that Siddaramaiah is not a born Congressman. He spent most of his political career opposing the party as a prominent Janata Dal (S) leader. He crossed over to the Congress only in 2006 after he was expelled from the JD (S) following differences with Deve Gowda. And in just seven years, he jumped over the heads of senior Congressmen to become chief minister after the party’s spectacular victory in the 2013 assembly polls. No wonder there’s heartburning in the Congress. Interestingly, the man on the street knows only too well the internal politics of the Congress. Ground reports from Bengaluru suggest that popular opinion puts the Congress at third place, after JD (S). The BJP will be the largest party, according to these reports. Will Karnataka rewrite its election history this time?

Who will take on Modi?

T

HE Congress is in a real fix over naming a candidate to fight Narendra Modi in Varanasi. Apparently, none of its UP leaders want to contest what they feel is a losing election. The high command has tapped several Brahmin bigwigs in its ranks including late veteran Kamlapati Tripathi’s grandson Rajeshpati Tripathi and its 2004 Lok Sabha election victor Rajesh Mishra. Both are said to have refused. It even requested its MLA from Kolasla in the Varanasi district, Ajay Rai. He is a bhumi-

har Brahmin and one of the few Congress nominees who bucked the SP wave in the 2012 assembly polls to get elected. But Rai too is believed to have declined to try his luck against the BJP’s PM nominee. Although senior leaders like Digvijay Singh and Anand Sharma are believed to have offered to fight Modi, the party is not keen on outsiders. It feels a local leader will at least make it a contest instead of a walkover. Faced with the reluctance of its UP leadership, the party is now veering around to the idea of backing a joint candidate with SP and

AVING achieved a human birth one must obtain freedom from the circle of birth and death by utilising the birth well. Adopt such a master That a master again you do not need to seek. Dwell in such a state That a dwelling again you do not have to make Undertake such a contemplation That contemplation again You do not have to undertake.” Kabir says “The saints’ physical form is the mirror of the Formless One. They are a form of the Eternal Being and are the proper object to contemplation. True contemplation is that of the Master’s form, real worship is the worship of His holy feet, true name is that which the Master gives you and true love is the ultimate truth. When the mind and soul are withdrawn to the eye centre with the help of repetition and held there with the aid of contemplation, the devotee comes in contact of the Shabd. The Divine melody of the word Shabd constantly resounds at the eye centre.” He hears the Shabd in its enchanting melody and is gradually absorbed in it. Once he comes in direct contact with the sound current it draws him towards itself and takes him upwards into the higher realm of spiritual regions, to his real home. This melody in

ister in the Vasundhara Raje government in Jaipur and appoint you governor, Jaswant was told, according to a BJP source. And if circumstances permit, we’ll field you for vice president in 2017. Jaswant Singh had contested and lost the VP poll in the 2012 to UPA nominee Hamid Ansari. Apparently, Jaswant Singh did not bite the bait. Somehow, he felt insulted and humiliated. He kept repeating to Rudy that he wanted to contest from Barmer and this would be his last election. Now that he has chosen to go against the party decision and fight as an independent candidate, BJP circles are wondering how his father’s show of defiance will affect Manvendra’s prospects in the BJP. Raje has a long standing animosity with father and son and Manvendra’s friends fear that she will use this episode to spike him.

BJP’s Jaswant puzzle

B

JP circles are genuinely puzzled by senior leader Jaswant Singh’s insistence on contesting from Barmer in Rajasthan. Barmer was his son Manvendra’s seat. He himself never represented the constituency in Parliament although born in Jasol village in the Barmer district. Jaswant Singh’s constituency has been Jodhpur, from where he won three times in the 1990s. He shifted to Darjeeling in 2009. According to party circles, Rajnath Singh sent confidante Rajiv Pratap Rudy to meet Jaswant Singh with an offer most people thought the veteran leader could not refuse. MATTER & SPIRIT In the physical, astral and causal worlds nothing can happen without a motive and therefore every cause has an effect for the actions done with motives. This sequence of cause and effect which keeps the soul within the perimeter of the worlds of mind and matter is known as the law of karma. Every action is a bond, a chain that keeps getting longer. “Man himself entwines the rope of karma which becomes a noose around his neck” The motive force behind all karmas is the mind, the body is the instrument that enacts or executes what the mind dictates, therefore as a result of these actions the mind keeps coming back to this world again and again in different bodies and circumstances. ANY eyebrows were raised when the BJP nominated Hema Malini to contest the Mathura seat. Bollywood star, South Indian belle and now Mumbaikar Hema Malini from western UP? That too from a Jat dominated area where she will take on Ajit Singh’s son and Charan Singh’s grandson Jayant Chaudhry? It seems Hema Malini was a compromise choice to stop Rajnath Singh from foisting his co-brother Arun Singh as a candidate from Mathura. Arun Singh has been a BJP worker for a long time but he is a Thakur and many questioned Rajnath’s choice of a Thakur for a Jat-dominated seat. Rajnath’s argument was that since RLD has fielded a Jat, the BJP would net in the three lakh Thakur vote in the area by putting up a Thakur. The argument didn’t cut much ice with the rest of the party, or with the RSS. Hema Malini came in at that point. It was pointed out that she is married to a Jat (Dharmendra) and has been performing Ras Leela ballets with her troupe in the area for years. Apparently, she and her troupe are regular performers around Janamashtami and Holi in Vrindavan. It remains to be seen whether star power can overcome the hard realities of caste identities in UP.

sent to different regions of suffering in this physical world. Karmas not accounted for in this birth will be carried forward to the next birth and therefore even if a person has not reaped any fresh Karma in this birth he will still have to have another birth for the remainder of his Karma from his past. That is how vastly accumulated karma is. Kabir says, “the soul is thus born again and again as various species, in the immobile and the mobile. Among the worms and moths many births have I had, in many forms I have raveled. Since the day thou subjected me, Lord, to visitations to the womb, in many a home have I made my sojourn. It is when you are born human that you have the chance to meet the Lord. The devotee has to reailise that fate, Karma or his destiny has to be undergone. He is born with his destiny and there is no escape from it. The feelings of elation or resentment while going through their Karmic bonds further the Karma. Attachment and hate, friendship and enmity, pride and resentment are strong feelings that form grooves on the mind and in course of time become the cause of further effects. There are three ways to escape the effects of Karma and that is acceptance, surrender and Shabd practice. The only way to live is to attain equanimity at all times both through hardships and happiness. It is also important to be rid of the I-ness, the feeling that one is responsible for the actions.” — Kabir

Hearty congratulations to ADC on 29th anniversary THE edit-page cartoon by Vikas Sabnis 'Afternoon Lunch Service for all' (ADC, Mar.25) sums up the great contribution of ADC very eloquently – how it serves diverse fare over six days pretty comprehensively as no other daily does. ADC's interaction with its readers through a whole page of 'Letters' is unparalleled and shows the importance it gives to feedbacks and comments on societal problems. The all-in-one format of the tabloid makes one wish that it comes out on Sundays too. Here is wishing ADC many more years of useful service to the society. — Dr. V. Subramanyan, Thane

I ALWAYS wanted to be a writer. I did my course in journalism but did not know where to start. When the ‘Afternoon Despatch & Courier’ was first published on March 25, 1985, I tried my hand at writing letters to the editor for the ‘Letters to the editor’ page. I wrote one letter after another and they were all was published. This gave me an opportunity to write more

letters for the newspaper. Since all my letters were published, I made it a daily habit of writing letters to the paper. Today, 29 years later, I write letters on various topics and am not at all afraid of writing against our corrupt MLAs, politicians, Prime Minister or police. Here’s wishing the ‘Afternoon Despatch & Courier’ a happy an-

niversary. May the 29th year of its publication be as prosperous and glamorous as the years before. My wife Shirley D’Cruz, daughter Sweta D’Cruz and myself are avid readers of the newspaper. We have grown up with it. Please restart the recipes page that was being published on Thursdays, as I love cooking. — Jubel D’Cruz, Dombivli

umbaikars will have to wait for some more time to travel by the Santacruz-Chembur Link Road (SCLR) – India's first double decker flyover – which was expected to be opened by mid-April this year, as an RTI reply from Mumbai Metropolitan and Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has revealed that the project will be delayed due to the incomplete work near the Amar Mahal flyover. The east-west corridor is expected to reduce travel time by 60 to 90 minutes from the Western and Eastern Express Highways. The MMRDA had set a deadline of March 31 to open the flyover for traffic. Commuters can take the Vakola junction road to reach the upper level of the doubledecker flyover to reach the EEH directly with the help of Amar Mahal Junction flyover. They will take the lower level of the flyover and turn right to reach Kurla station and turn left to reach the Lokmanya Tilak Terminus. SCLR is considered to be the most delayed project as it has taken more than 11 years for the work to be completed since it started in the year 2003. e are all still in a state of shocked disbelief, because except for some minor ailments, my sister-in-law legendary actress Nandaji was otherwise quite fit and fine. Recently, she visited our new house and blessed our family. Just two days ago on Sunday, we spoke to her where she invited all of us to her house this Monday for the auspicious occasion of Gudi Padva. In fact, we had specially brought prasad and a saffron shawl for Nanda-ji, when we went to Shirdi last Thursday. She was a staunch

devotee of the revered Sai Baba. We were to hand over the prasad and shawl to her this Monday. But as destiny willed it, the same holy shawl was draped around her ‘lifeless’ body, as she passed away. Born in 1941, Nanda-ji was only 73 years of age,” disclosed eminent danseuse-actress Jayshree T. (Talpade) as tears welled in her eyes. “Call it a divine coincidence, that I made my screen-debut with a western dance number in ‘Abhilasha’ (1968), in which Nanda-ji played the lead heroine. She proved a lucky mascot for me as my film career took off

from there. Little did I realize then, that eventually, that I would be marrying Nandaji’s eminent film-maker brother Jaiprakash Karnataki which in turn would make her my sister-in-law. Having done some five films with her as a co-star, I found her to be grace and humility personified, besides being a fabulous actress. We will all miss her as a lovable caring human being. Thankfully, her retro movies and evergreen songs will keep her fond memories always alive,” says Jayshree.

Nanda’s five evergreen songs: Allah Tero Naam (Hum Dono) Ek Pyar Ka Naghma Hai (Shor) Nana Karte Pyar Tumhi (Jab Jab Phool Khile) Gulabi Aankhen (The Train with Rajesh Khanna) Likkha Hai Teri Aankhon Mein (Teen Deviyan)

An enriching visit for US based students!

MUMBAI | WEDNESDAY, MARCH 26, 2014

ahatma Education Society’s Pillai Group of Institutions welcomed a group of 22 management students pursuing the Trans-Global Executive MBA Programme (T-GEMBA) from Saint Mary's School of Economics and Business Administration, California, USA for a six-day cross cultural business studies program at Dr. K.M. Vasudevan Pillai Campus, Panvel from March 17 to 22. This year the TGEMBA group has partnered with the Pillai Institute of Management Studies & Research and has undertaken three projects in Mumbai as a part of the SOSERVMAN (Social Service Management) Programme viz. Balprafulta, Creative Handicrafts and Mahatma Night Degree College. They made a study of operational issues, gift-giving and financing issues, logistics questions and strategic issues affecting these organisations. During this visit, the US students were given a tour of some slum areas where they interacted with the families living there. They also visited some orphanages and organisations run for the welfare of disadvantaged women. Subsequent to their study, the students will provide a free of cost recommendatory Project report and presentation to these organisations on the specific areas investigated. This week-long visit also included company visits and lectures at top ranking companies like Tata Consultancy Services, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., Reserve Bank of India and National Stock Exchange Limited to get an understanding of the best practices followed by global Indian companies. ome lipstick applied, a tinge of fairness cream, well-groomed long hair and is that it? Are these the only essential aspects for one to be called beautiful or to make your presence felt in happening parties or a small gathering of friends? To some extent I feel they are but along with it internal beauty forms a vital part for an attractive outlook. Beauty is not just about moving a pencil around your face or hiding age marks with loads of cosmetic creams. However, with a physical appearance there is a lot to be considered for a beautiful face. Beauty should not be recognised from the face but from the heart

instead. Bringing beauty in the four chambers of our heart will eventually light up our face with a glow and simplicity that no 'beauty tool' can bring. Beauty does not mean a mask to be worn and a fake smile to be plastered between your two lips on your face. It is to reflect the 'real smile' that exists despite worldly sorrow and pains. Look, I am not an old monk who aims to bring down the fashion industry but it’s just that I aim to link internal beauty to the external display making it more real and appealing. The face though may be fashioned and beautified with the best kinds of parlour tools, it would never be able to get that unbeatable charisma which can only provided by internal beauty.

martwatches were never attractive. The road to success is to make them both functional and fashionable - something of utility, and tempting to wear. This year Pebble managed to present a great-looking wristwatch with an excellent configuration. The new Pebble Steel channels the styling of a classic men's watch while also adding a number of new optimised apps to the mix. A new Mercedes one was particularly interesting. It provides stats like your current mileage, how much fuel is in your tank, and your current tyre pressure, whether you're near the car or not. While driving, you can set the app to deliver vibration alerts to your wrist for different events,

like if traffic is getting heavy ahead. You can also configure Pebble's three buttons for quick actions performed through the phone and over the car's dash system. It’s water resistant (safe in the shower or poolside). A slightly new magnetic connector for charging and an added three-color LED for showing charge status round out the new features. Most smartwatch displays shut off to conserve energy. The Pebble’s 'e-paper' blackand-white screen stays active all the time. A side button adds backlighting at night, or you can shake your wrist to light up the screen. The drawback - it only holds eight apps at a time and is priced at $249. (chandraguptaa@hotmail.com)

Flexibility and space can increase productivity

“Ultimately your success depends on the results you can deliver,” informs Meherzad Nevil Wadia, fitness therapist and lifestyle consultant

am grateful to those who have helped me come into this field with special mention of my trainer Navroz Dapotawalla, Mickey Mehta, Talwalkars, and my parents. This is a very unconventional field and my parents were very supportive. I have done my B Com, PGDBA, Diploma in Labour Law and Welfare. I am certified in fitness, yoga massage and spa therapy. I worked for sometime in the corporate world but I did not feel satisfied. Now that I am a fitness trainer I enjoy tremendous job satisfaction. Why waste time in a job that you do not enjoy? One should always choose a career that gives you job satisfaction. It also feels good that I am contributing to the health and well-being of people. I opted for this career to explore the industry with a strong belief that health is the biggest asset on which the success of life depends. Exercising used to be my hobby and I have won several body building competitions. Therefore I decided to convert my hobby into my profession and I am glad I made this decision. The best thing I like about this profession is that every day is a new day. I do not get bored and it does not get monotonous. Every client is different and every day we face new challenges. I interact with different people, different body types and different mindsets. Each day brings new inspirations and new challenges. Every day has its own lessons to teach and offers fresh insights into the profession. I have studied various subjects like graduation and law and there was always a career in the corporate sector to fall back on in case my present career did not take off. One should always complete your basic education as an unconventional career like fitness needs time and patience to pick up. However I have been extremely fortunate that my career has brought me tremendous success. Also the education does not get wasted. It helps you think better and make better decisions. With my training and education I can mange my business better and also have an option of being the manager of a gym, club and hotel. Therefore my corporate education opens new vistas for my career and helps me to be a better person and manager. As a fitness trainer it is important that I myself be fit and be a shining example to my clients. Therefore I

train for about one hour almost every day with one day as a rest day. I am extremely particular about my fitness routine, diet and hygiene. I have to set an example to my students if I expect them to follow my instructions and fitness routine. As a fitness therapist and lifestyle consultant for individuals and corporate clients, my job profile includes training and grooming employees on various aspects of fitness. I measure their Body Mass Index (BMI); help boost their fitness levels, strength, flexibility and endurance. I have to demonstrate the correct way to exercise, the right techniques, postures, monitor the client’s progress and adapt their programme and mindset as they progress on their journey of fitness. I have invested in different types of props which help to conduct floor exercises and I have also started investing gradually with an eye on opening my own gym. Besides monetary terms, I have also invested my patience, hard work, education and have harvested the goodwill of my clients. A trained fresher in this field can earn about Rs.10,000 a month. As a personal trainer there is no limit; it all depends on your reputation and the results you deliver. You can be called a professional once you have a certificate in fitness. However the certificate in hand is not enough. You have to put your education and training to practice. You have to perform on the gym floor and generate results for the clients. That is what makes you a professional. According to me – more than being a professionally certified fitness trainer it is important to concentrate on perfection, practical experience and delivering results for your clients in terms of toned bodies, weight loss, etc. As a certified and trained fitness professional, the amount of fees you can demand depend on your level of education and the results you can deliver. Ultimately your success depends on the results you can deliver. You also need to be a good motivator and perhaps a charismatic person to inspire your clients. As a personal fitness trainer you also enjoy flexibility and can determine your own working hours. You are not bound to a ‘nine to five’ job. The biggest benefit of being a fitness instructor is the positive impact you have on peoples’ lives. It gives me immense joy to see the transformation in my clients’ bodies. The main challenge is to build your own clientele. It takes time and you have to keep yourself motivated and have tremendous patience. For the future, I hope to set up a functional workout studio with spa therapies in different cities. The fitness industry is growing and there are many opportunities and tremendous scope for a good career in this field.

As told to Monarose Sheila Pereira

New age employers are realising that offering options like work from home can help both employees and the company, says Sharvani Sachidanand, Director & Co-Founder at annecto Rewards & Retail, a specialized agency that offers solutions in rewarding employees

A

nita is a sharp editor and is considered one of the backbones of her book publishing company’s editorial team. She is a mother of a two year old baby. If the flexibility of working hours and liberal options like work from home work that she enjoys are not made available, Anita might have had to consider quitting her job for a few years. Her publishing house realized they cannot and would not do without her and have allowed her some priveliges. She works from home for three days and reports to office only two days a week, besides attending meetings and client briefings. Consequently both the editorial team and Anita’s home are able to function efficiently. Until a few years back, such scenarios could not have been imagined. However, today, Internet and mobile phone connectivity, and easy availability of laptops and computers have made this feasible. New age employers are realizing that office discipline rules can be re-framed to suit the needs and requirements of the present. The crux is to make sure good employees are comfortable and their productivity is kept high through such initiatives. For working mothers in nuclear families who do not have any help to look after their babies, this flexibility of work comes as a big boon. It helps them invest in their careers as well as their families without any conflict. However, work from home is not an incentive that is needed just by working mothers. A lot of other employees in several situations may need it. A man or a woman may need it to look after an ailing relative at home or when recovering from an illness themselves. An employee who is recovering from an ailment such as a leg fracture cannot travel to office every day. However, he or she doesn’t need to take leave for several weeks, waiting for the plaster to be taken off. In such cases as well, the option of working from home can come in handy. Several employers are stepping out of strait jacketed systems to improve the conditions of their employees and promote retention and recognition. Many have realized that making the system flexible actually increases productivity and promotes loyalty among employees. It’s however very important that an organization uses its discretion when extending this privilege to the deserving. It should be clear that working from home cannot become a rule rather than an exception. Yet, in select cases it can be extended to

employees who genuinely deserve it. It’s an added responsibility on the employee to deliver on the trust and liberty that the company provides them with. Self discipline and ethics play a very critical role here. Over the past decade, several new avenues of work have emerged in the Indian economy. A lot of them are new radical ideas that do not need to conform to the existing attitudes and systems. While traditional companies have been slow in reacting to the changing needs of the day, newer firms and employers have often shown the way. Internet and connectivity has also revolutionized the workspace. You do not need to be in office to respond to an email or prepare a PPT presentation. Additionally, when you are connected on a telecom network, you can be available anytime anywhere on phone. Working from home in such a situation becomes as good as working at office. More and more companies today are waking up to the need of keeping their employees happy. A content workforce is not only loyal to the company but is also more productive. If pay packages are not drastically different, a number of professionals prefer to settle for companies which have a good work culture, employee friendly policies and offer them chances to grow. After all who doesn’t want a peaceful work life where work related challenges are plenty and your employer also knows how to take care of you. Even small gestures of goodwill and concern on a superior’s part can go a long way in buying loyalty from the employee. No wonder, in an age where attrition rates are rising and people are in constant search for greener pastures, more and more companies are devising their policies to better suit the convenience of their employers. The concept of paternity leaves for new fathers is one such incentive. Till a few years back, a 90 day maternity leave was all a woman turned mother would get. Many women had to sacrifice their careers to take care of their children. This was also a loss of talent for the companies. Today, the new breed of HR policy makers are offering flexible options like a few days work-from-home set up for mothers, some offer crèche or baby-sitting services for their mother employees. Employees, particularly good ones are an asset. They should be treated as human resource and not as any other replaceable part. So, are you taking care of your employees?

A sub-editor’s job is to make the copy clear, correct, compact and consistent within a given deadline. A sub-editor instils a sense of flow and style into the text keeping in mind the readership of the said newspaper or publication, says Nivedita Dargalkar

Cut the Crap

MUMBAI | WEDNESDAY, MARCH 26, 2014

ADDED JOBS

The job of a sub-editor also involves tasks like news design (arranging material on a newspaper page keeping in mind editorial and graphical guidelines) and pagination (dividing content into distinct pages). For this it is imperative that a sub-editor has sound knowledge of computer applications like QuarkXPress.

NATURE OF THE JOB

A sub-editor’s job ranges from omitting unnecessary chunks of information from the copy to checking for any typos – errors like spelling, grammar and punctuation. The sub-editor is also responsible for enhancing the copy by giving catchy and apt headlines, subheadlines and photo captions. A sub-editor has to check whether the reporter/writer has included all the 5Ws and an H in the copy i.e.Who, when, where, when, why and how and call him/her to clarify if any factual data is missing. Sub-editors may even shorten a given copy in order to fit the length limits. Sub-editors also have to co-ordinate with the photo-desk of the newspaper to get the right picture for the copy they are editing and have to ensure that the concerned photographer is acknowledged with photo-credits. If a picture is not available with the photo-desk, they have to ensure that an apt

All these tasks need to be accomplished within the deadlines demarcated for each story. Adherence to deadlines is taken very seriously. Remember as a subeditor, you would be editing several stories simultaneously and a good sub-editor is the one who not only edits the story crisply but edits it within the limited time frame. Thus, you have to be a multi-tasker and learn to focus on the job at hand.

SKILLS AND TRAINING

and appropriate picture is sourced from the photo library. Every newspaper/publication has its own style sheet and it is the job of the sub-editor to ensure that the copy adheres to the prescribed code of conduct. The sub-editor also ensures that all concerned parties and authorities in a said story are represented fairly and that any possible legal problems or libel are duly

addressed on the editing desk itself. For this, the sub-editor may even have to cross-check with the reporter or the copy-editor. Remember the golden rule of editing: ‘Double-checking today is ten times better than a corrigendum tomorrow’. As a sub-editor if you have to edit a developing story, then it is your responsibility (along with the reporter) to keep a tab on the facts

and figures that could change between the time the article is submitted to you for editing by the reporter and the time when you finally put in your copy after editing. This is true in cases of train accidents or bomb-blasts when the number of injured, dead keeps increasing constantly. Sub-editors also have to proofread copies to ensure that they are clean of any errors.

There is no separate three-year course in newspaper editing. Mostly sub-editing is taught as a subject in a college journalism course. However, the best training in sub-editing that you can get is by experience. The more copies you edit, the more skilled you’ll become. It is often advisable to start from a small publication where pressures are relatively less. Besides having an excellent command over the language in which you are sub-editing, sub-editors need to have vast general knowledge of what is happening around the world, an eye for detail and A distinctpersonal style that would set the copies edited by them apart from others. Remember it is always sub-editors who make or break a copy.

Cherish your Imagination

MUMBAI | WEDNESDAY, MARCH 26, 2014

E

Ragini MMS 2 released recently amid a whole lot of speculation on the content and of course due to its lead actress Sunny Leone. We asked youngsters whether they'd seen the movie, what they thought of it and whether they plan to catch this erotic horror flick in the near future! I have not seen this movie and definitely don't plan to watch it! I can imagine what the producers had in mind to rope in audiences when they cast Sunny Leone in this movie. I really like the song 'Baby doll' but that can't be the only factor for watching a movie! I'm not a big fan of horror either and I don't see myself stepping out to watch one! Albana Khatri, Consultant From what I've heard about this movie, it's more erotic than anything else. Sunny Leone flouncing around in half clad clothes is really not something I'd find interesting! Firstly I don't really think Sunny can act, since I've seen her acting skills in her debut! The boys have been raving about this movie, and I can imagine why! I don't like horror movies, so that just sums it all up. I have zero motivation to catch this flick. Divya Saha, Adventure Tourism You know for some reason I do want to catch this flick. I mean I know what to expect and everything, but it's making me all the more curious to really see what the final product will be like. I might just be laughing all through this one. I do like horror and I think Sunny should be given a chance to display her acting prowess! Come on guys don't be so tough on her! Srilakshmi Kurup, Philisophy Learner

HOW HORRIFIED ARE YOU?

very night I think about what I can write? Writing is something that I love, it’s not only my hobby but my passion. And so here is a thought that I would like to share with you all. And I hope in the end you too will be inspired. Do you know where writers get their passion from? Do you know how they get inspired to write books? Do you know how they write amazing, and extraordinary books? I kept thinking about this the whole night and here are the answers that I found. Writers get their passion from their daily lives. From a wooden spoon to a massive, gigantic cupboard. Now you will think, ‘How can a spoon give us passion?’ But using one’s creativity, experience and knowledge can make us write an end number of things. It’s not a pen or pencil if that’s what you are thinking, it’s your creativity. Creativity to imagine, to dream and write them down on a paper. It’s your imagination that will make you think about things that you never thought about. Like I was saying, anything can inspire you. Be it a broom stick or a bed sheet. Well I know you must be laughing and so let’s try this, for instance, Emma opened her closet. She gasped. Inside it she saw that the clothes from the closet were walking out! Seeing it she gasped a sigh of relief. Now imagine what must have happened, what did she manage to get. And you will wonder about your imagination and creativity. Write about what you imagined at first when you read about Emma. Well let your mind flow in the direction it wants to. At times we might not be aware but we might have the best imaginative power. A power that can make us think, that can make us write. We all know our stories, we just need to pen them down on paper. Stories can be anything - fantasy, drama, mystery, thriller, comedy or tragedy. Everyone is a writer. We just need to unleash the potential inside us. Write about things that confuse you, make you

happy, make you sad, and inspire you and much more. Well just look around for things that encourage you or inspire you that have made a difference in your life. Life is a story in itself. It’s a story with every chapter adding flavours to your life. Whatever it is towards the end it makes life beautiful. Not only that just like a food is tasty

when some outside ingredients are added in the same way a beautiful story at times can be written by going on a journey somewhere outside one’s own life. A thought made me imagine about a writer’s passion and I ended up writing this article. Truly, imagination is a gift for a writer and to everyone you just need to flow and use it in the right direction.

Target Rs. 76

Post successful consolidation under the current management, DCB is well poised to improve its earnings profile. With improving cost/income ratio and manageable credit costs due to strategic focus on secured segments, bank is likely to deliver earnings CAGR of 25.2% during FY13-16E. We believe, DCB is a potential re-rating candidate with normalized RoE at ~14% and RoA at 1.1-1.2% during FY15/16E. Bank is well capitalized and has stable management to implement bank's medium term strategy. We value the bank at 1.3x FY16E ABV, arriving at TP of Rs.76 (29% potential upside), initiating coverage with BUY. Investment rationale Opex improvement is on track; cost/income ratio is moving in the right direction. DCB's operating expense has been on the higher side vis-à-vis its peers due to larger presence in the Urban/Metro markets, while throughput/ branch has been on the lower side. We like the management's focus on cost rationalization by enhancing the productivity of the existing branches, cutting down on branch sizes, closing down ineffective branches and adding new branches in tier-II to VI cities. Asset quality to remain healthy even in the prevailing stressed environment; high PCR to cushion its future earnings. Gross NPA touched ~9.0% during FY09/10 due to sharp rise in fresh slippage (~7.5% in FY09). As a result, large provisions had to made on these portfolios (credit costs: 367bps in FY09; 347bps in FY10). Bank has de-risked its portfolio by allowing its unsecured PL and CV/CE segments to run-off. Attractive valuations; Initiate with BUY with TP of Rs.76: DCB's return profile has seen improvement largely driven by better operating efficiencies, healthy margins and lower credit costs. We expect earnings to grow 25.2% CAGR during FY13-16E on back of operating leverage (C/I ratio at 56%), strong loan growth (24% CAGR) along with healthy NIM (3.3-3.4%). At CMP, stock is trading at reasonable valuation (1.0x FY16E ABV) with comfortable asset quality (stressed assets at only 1.2%). Its RoA and RoE are expected to come at 1.1-1.2% and ~14% during FY15/16E, making it a potential re-rating candidate. We initiate coverage with a BUY rating with TP of Rs.76 (1.3x FY16E ABV).

Centrum calls a ‘Buy’ on MRPL CMP: Rs. 43

Target Rs. 60

We initiate coverage on MRPL, a standalone refiner, with a BUY rating and a PT of Rs60 (~38% upside). A credible turnaround candidate, we are optimistic on it due to (1) Channel checks revealing stabilization of power plant and hence imminent commissioning of phase-III in 1-2 months; (2) Strong business outlook despite building in conservative Gross Refining Margin (GRM) leading to a modest positive turnaround in earnings from FY15E; and (3) Negligible impact of Export Parity Pricing (EPP), if implemented. The stock adequately factors in the continuing delay in capacity expansion and consequent low GRM. Benefits of Phase-III to gain traction from 2HFY15E: Phase III expansion is set for commissioning by Q1FY15 with stabilization of CPP - as corroborated by channel checks; however, we have conservatively built-in benefits to accrue from 2HFY15 and expect a significant jump in GRM led by (1) high yield products; (2) lower fuel loss; (3) full benefits of lower freight costs from FY16E due to Single Point Mooring and (4) tax benefits. Intrinsically strong despite lower GRMs built-in: We have built-in a modest GRM of USD4.2/6 per bbl in FY15E/FY16E against the preceding 5-year average GRM of USD5/bbl (without Phase-III expansion benefits). We derive GRMs using historical linear relationship between crude and product prices; estimates are conservative to factor in risk of global product imbalances. Although incremental supply of Gasoline and Naphtha is expected to contribute 50% of the overall product surplus in CY13-18, MRPL with 9% exposure to export markets in these products will be relatively insulated. Robust financials make MRPL a strong investment case: A 55% CAGR in EBITDA earnings and 105% CAGR in EBIT earnings over FY13-16E coupled with RoE of 17% in FY16E, turning free cash flow positive over FY15/FY16E and current valuations at Mean-SD across matrix on FY16E, make MRPL a compelling investment bet. We emphasise that for such a turnaround case, only FY16 would represent a return to stable earnings, and demonstrate that even modestly better GRMs, realistic for MRPL, can lead to material positive earnings surprises. Valuation and Key risks: We initiate coverage with a BUY rating and a PT of Rs60 which is derived as the average value using DCF and fair multiple assigned to EV/EBITDA, EPS and BV. MRPL in FY16E would trade at trough valuations and valuations at 20% discount to global peers, caps the downside. Key risks are (1) Lower GRMs; (2) Delay in commissioning of phase III and (3) Skewed product mix. The stock has limited coverage on the street.

C

ommerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma is hopeful the Reserve Bank of India will cut interest rates to boost growth, taking into account declining inflation. "We hope that they will factor this in," Sharma told PTI when asked whether the RBI would reduce interest rates in view of softening inflation. The RBI's next Monetary Policy Statement is scheduled on April 1. The central bank increased a key interest rate to 8% from 7.75% at its previous monetary policy review on January 28. The annual rate of inflation, based on the monthly wholesale price index, stood at 4.68% in February, slipping below 5% for the first time in nine months as onion and potato prices eased. Retail inflation was at a 25-month low of 8.1% in February. The country's economic growth slipped to a decade-low of 4.5% in 2012-13 and is estimated at 4.9% in the current financial year. This is low compared with the past when the Indian economy used to grow by 9% or more. India Inc has been demanding a rate cut to spur investment and promote growth. On whether the RBI could go ahead with its policy initiatives without seeking the consent of the Election Commission as the model code of conduct is in force, Sharma said: "RBI is very much in

Select Bankers Met Ahead Of Policy The Reserve Bank yesterday met a select group of public sector and foreign banks ahead of the forthcoming bi-monthly policy meet early next week. The central bank usually holds the customary pre-policy discussions ahead of every monetary policy meeting with all public, private and foreign bankers, but this time around only a few bankers attended the meeting. its right. Government has to continue functioning." "We respect the model code but this is not the part of the original constitutional mandate," he added. The model code of conduct, which came into force on March 5, prohibits the government from taking any action that could have a bearing on the Lok Sabha elections, scheduled to start on April 7 and conclude with the counting of votes on May 16. However, ratings agency Icra yesterday said it expects Reserve Bank Governor Raghuram Rajan to hold the key rates on April 1, as inflation has shown considerable signs of cooling and is sniffing at the desired

levels now. "Consumer inflation eased to 8.1% in February, close to the target of 8% for the end of this calendar year as suggested by the Urjit Patel committee...Therefore, we expect a status quo on the policy rate in the upcoming policy review," it said in a note. Icra said the unseasonal rains and hailstorms witnessed early March, which may put pressure on the inflation front, will not immediately have a bearing on the monetary policy. Additionally, there are also fears about a poor monsoon which can have a negative impact on the inflation trajectory, the agency said. "At this stage, these concerns may be premature to necessitate a monetary response and instead warrant action from various levels of government in terms of preparedness to deal with the eventuality of an unfavourable monsoon," it said. Rajan, who took charge last September, raised the rates at his first policy announcement, rightly foreseeing a pressure on the inflation front and increased it again--the third time since he took charge--in January when the market was expecting a pause. It can be noted that even though the RBI has not formally adopted inflation targeting, it has gone public on targeting consumer price inflation down to 8% by January 2015 and further down to 6% by January 2016, as per the recommendations of the Patel committee.

Sebi Allows 100 Alternative Funds To Operate In India By A Business Reporter

M

arket regulator Sebi has allowed as many as 100 entities to set up AIFs - newly created class of pooled-in investment vehicles for real estate, private equity and hedge funds - in less than two years. The 100 Alternative Investment Funds (AIFs) have been registered with Sebi since July 2012. Out of this, around 11 entities got market regulator's approval to operate in the country so far this year, 67 in 2013 and the remaining 22 in 2011. The AIFs that have registered with Sebi included Religare Credit Investment Trust, Indian National gems Fund and Milestone Alterna-

tive Asset Fund. The regulator had notified in May 2012, the guidelines for this new class of market intermediaries. AIFs are basically funds established or incorporated in India for the purpose of pooling in capital from Indian and foreign investors for investing as per a pre-decided policy. In August last year, Sebi decided that the promoters of listed companies can offload 10% of their equity to AIFs such as such as SME Funds, Infrastructure Funds, PE funds and Venture Capital Funds registered with it so as to meet the norm of having a minimum of 25% public holding. Under Sebi guidelines, AIFs can operate broadly in three categories.

The Sebi rules apply to all AIFs, including those operating as private equity funds, real estate funds and hedge funds, among others. The Category-I AIFs are those funds that get incentives from the government, Sebi or other regulators and include Social Venture Funds, Infrastructure Funds, Venture Capital Funds and SME Funds. The Category-III AIFs are those trading with a view to making short-term returns and it includes hedge funds, among others. The Category-II AIFs can invest anywhere in any combination but are prohibited from raising debt, except for meeting their day-to-day operational requirements.

CRICKETERS’SPEAK

Srinivasan must step down as BCCI chief: SC

N

EW DELHI: Coming down heavily on BCCI President N Srinivasan, the Supreme Court asked him to step down for a free and fair probe in the betting and spot fixing scandal involving his son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan and some cricketers, failing which it would pass an order. After going through the contents of a report filed in a sealed cover by apex court-appointed probe panel into the scandal, a bench headed by Justice A K Patnaik said there are "very very serious" allegations made in the report and unless the BCCI President steps down, no fair probe can be conducted. "In our opinion, Srinivasan has to step down if proper probe is to be done in the case," the bench said. "We don't like to damage people's reputation but unless the BCCI President steps down, no fair investigation can be down. Why is he sticking to the chair. It is nauseating," the bench said. "If you would not step down, we will pass the verdict," an enraged bench said. It said that the contents of the report, which also raised suspicion on the role of six India-capped players in IPL betting and spot-fixing scandal, cannot be revealed in open court and asked BCCI counsel to go through

The credibility of the BCCI has reached rock bottom. I hope the other members of the Board try and clean the mess they are in. N. Srinivasan must resign immediately. If he doesn't and the Supreme Court is forced to make that decision, it would be the most shameful thing that ever happened to BCCI. This will help rebuild the image of the Board. I don’t feel others along with him should step down. DILIP VENGSARKAR

certain paragraphs of it. "See and go through the report to get to know the seriousness of the allegations but not as an advocate of Srinivasan or BCCI," the bench said. It said that the gist of the report is such that the allegations have to be probed and asked the BCCI counsel to take instructions. It posted the case for hearing on March 27. During the hearing, BCCI pleaded before the court not to disclose the contents and names of players mentioned in the report. Srinivasan had stepped aside in June 2013 after Meiyappan's name had cropped up in the fixing scandal, which had to led to ban on paceman S Sreesanth and his two other Rajasthan Royals colleagues. In his absence, former BCCI chief Jagmohan Dalmiya discharged the duties of the President. However, at the BCCI AGM in September 2013, Srinivasan was re-elected as President. Supreme Court had appointed a three-member probe panel, led by retired judge Justice Mukul Mudgal to investigate into the fixing saga. The Apex court-appointed panel had replaced BCCI's own two-man probe panel, which had exonerated Meiyappan of any wrongdoing and its verdict was challenged in the courts.

Everyone has supported N Srinivasan in the BCCI and they are all to blame. I don’t think there will be a cascading effect on Indian cricket and the running of the BCCI. Now there is no question of him morally stepping down, the Supreme Court has clearly told him to resign or they will do it in 48 hours. Bihar Cricket Association's role was very important, if they hadn’t taken a stand, we would’nt have witnessed this day. Many other people like Ajay Shirke and Sanjay Jagdale resigned in the face of it, they morally quit as they felt it was wrong. SHISHIR HATTANGADI

SUPREME COURT OBSERVATIONS In our opinion, Srinivasan has to step down if a proper probe is to be done in the case.

We don't like to damage people's reputation but unless the BCCI President steps down, no fair investigation can be down. Why is he sticking to the chair. It is nauseating.

If you would not step down, we will pass the verdict. See and go through the report to get to know the seriousness of the allegations but not as an advocate of Srinivasan or BCCI. - SC to BCCI counsel C.A. Sundaram

Srini under pressure as three BCCI VPs ask him to resign N

EW DELHI: Pressure mounted on N Srinivasan to quit as BCCI chief with three Vice Presidents joining former cricketers and administrators in asking him to respect the Supreme Court observation that he should step down for a fair probe into the IPL fixing scandal. After going through the contents of a report filed in a sealed cover by apex court-appointed probe panel into the scandal, a bench headed by Justice A K Patnaik said there are "very very serious" allegations made in the report and unless the BCCI President steps down, no fair probe can be conducted. The beleaguered Srinivasan now appeared isolated even within the Board as three of the five vice-presidents -- Shivlal Yadav, Ravi Sawant and Chitrak Mitra -- asking him to abide by what the Supreme Court observation. "SC has given the order, nobody can challenge it. We have to accept it. Since the SC has given an order, there is no question of going back on it or giving an opinion on that. It has to be carried out in total and

It was a strictly personal decision that I took because that time I felt uncomfortable with what was happening and therefore I decided to quit. Srinivasan for whatever reason decided not to resign. So it's now coming to the state where the Supreme Court had to come down heavily on the Board. Personally to me this is a very sad thing because we all have been members of that august body. It is sad to see that BCCI has landed in such a situation. — Former BCCI treasurer Ajay Shirke

VicePresident from East Zone, Chitrak Mitra said that a full-fledged president will take over after Srinivasan steps down. "The SC verdict said Srinivasan should step down for a proper investigation (into IPL fixing scandal). If he does not stepped down, the SC will pass an order to that effect on March 27. That's all about it," Mitra said. "Since the term of South Zone (for BCCI presidency) is going on, most probably Shivlal will become the president. We have to abide by what the Supreme Court said. If the court feels that he should step down for a fair probe into the scandal, I think it's reasonable. But if the other version is true (court's observation that why is he (Srinivasan) sticking to the chair? It is nauseating), it is serious. EW DELHI: Former IPL chairman Lalit Modi hailed the Supreme Court's observation that N Srinivasan should step down as BCCI chief for a fair probe into the IPL fixing scandal, and said the Tamil Nadu strongman should now be shown the door from the Board once and for all. "Kudos to the Honourable Supreme Court for taking the most decisive action to say global cricket. Finally they have shown the door to Srini," Modi wrote on his twitter page. "Hope my colleagues in Bcci will now once and forever get rid of this M------ from Chennai who had cemented himself in all governing bodies," he wrote. After going through the contents of a report filed in a sealed cover by apex court-appointed probe panel into the scandal, a bench headed by Justice A K Patnaik said there are

"very very serious" allegations made in the report and unless the BCCI president steps down, no fair probe can be conducted. Modi, a vocal critic of Srivasan, said the main task before cricket administrators now is to cleanse the game in the wake of the IPL spotfixing scandal. He said all those connected with India Cements, Srinivasan's company, should be disassociated with the game of cricket. "Big task ahead to win back the hearts and faith of the fans. Second step to rid everyone connected to India Cements from cricket," Modi said. "We had lost a few battles along the way. But winning the war against fixing is the only way forward. Waiting for Dusshera to happen early this year after the Modern day Ravan is gone ??," he concluded.

Raina's credentials as T20 batsman unquestionable: Sourav Ganguly M

IRPUR: Former India captain Sourav Ganguly feels that Suresh Raina's ability as a T20 batsman is "unquestionable" and his success in the ongoing World T20 will give him confidence to get ready for "bigger battles" ahead. Raina's sequence of scores, including the two warm-up games, are 41, 54, 35 not out and 1 not out and he had credited Ganguly for giving him tips which proved to be invaluable in his recent success. "I never had any doubts about Suresh's talent and ability. He has always been a class act in shortest format. He is a dangerous T20 batsman and a big threat for any opposition team. I am certainly hopeful that his current form in ICC World T20 will translate into something bigger and better in the coming days," Ganguly said. "There will be tougher battles ahead (England tour in July-September, Australia tour and World Cup) and I would ideally want to him get success in those battles," he said.

Asked about the kind of technical inputs he has given to Raina, Ganguly said, "Yes, I have had interactions with Suresh but what I told him is a very personal thing between two individuals and not for media consumption. He is a colleague and it is my duty to help him if he ever needs any. I am always there to help anyone who needs my advice and I don't believe in making a hue and cry about it. For someone, who had been a mentor to Yuvraj Singh during the early part of his career, Ganguly said people should not read too much into the left-handed batsman's indifferent form at the moment. "It's only two matches that Yuvraj has not got runs. We should not make a big fuss about it. He is a human being and can go through a tough phase. He has the talent to overcome this. Show me one sportsman who has played at the top level for 14, 15 or 16 years and never had a slump in form? This is bound to happen as that's how the nature of sport is," said Ganguly.

Marlon Samuels is stumped by Mahendra Singh Dhoni during the T20 World Cup.

K

UALA LUMPUR: Calling Mahendra Singh Dhoni one of the best finishers in limited-overs game, cricket legend Kapil Dev backed the Indian captain to continue leading the team in all three formats and said there should not be any question about his replacement. The 55-year-old Kapil, who is here as one of the ambassadors for the 15th Laureus World Sports Awards, said Dhoni is the ideal man to lead the team in upcoming Test series and defend the crown when the 2015 ODI World Cup kicks off in Australia and New Zealand. "If Dhoni is fit enough there should be no doubt because he is one of the finest batsmen we have and coming in at number 6-7 and averaging more than 50, why should we have any doubts. Somebody who has won us the World Cup, the T20 World Cup... Why do we even talk about it and bring doubts in people's mind," Kapil said. Though the team has posted two convincing wins in the ongoing World T20 in Bangladesh,

Dhoni's captaincy was under the scanner not long ago, after series loses in South Africa and New Zealand. Former Australian skipper Ian Chappell had suggested that Virat Kohli be given the Test captaincy. Asked about that option, Kapil said Kohli should not be rushed into a skipper's role. "The only thing is when you have such a senior captain it will only lead to confusion in the team if you make Kohli captain and Dhoni playing under him. It's not fair. He will get his chance why should we push him, when the time comes he will be there. Dhoni is a mature captain so let him do the job, the day he retires then management will see." When asked about England batsman Kevin Pietersen's sudden retirement from international cricket, Kapil said nobody is above the team. "He was also given opportunity. He is a talented and strong player, but it is up to the individual to manage himself within the team. You can't be above the team, you have to be a part of the team," Kapil said.

THE ONLY PARSI TO BE IN PAKISTAN TEST SQUAD PASSES AWAY

K

ARACHI: Rusi Dinshaw, the only Parsi to have ever been selected in a Pakistan Test squad, has passed away quietly and his death in tragic circumstances has brought into sharp focus the failure of the PCB to look after its former players. Dinshaw, an 86 year-old man in need of proper care and support, was suffering from schizophrenia. He breathed his last here on Monday. Dinshaw a stylish lefthanded batsman and left arm spinner who was a member of the Pakistan Test squad that first toured India in 1952-53 was reduced to

begging at the Karachi Parsi Institute and at some traffic signals in the city before his death. "It is very sad to hear about the plight of Rusi Dinshaw because while he may not have actually played a Test match but he had the honour of being in Pakistan's first Test squad and is an important part of Pakistan cricket's history," former Test captain Aamir Sohail said. Relatives of Dinshaw said that in the 60s he had began to show signs of depression and was diagnosed with schizophrenia and the electric shock treatment

prevalent in those days broke his spirit. "He used to come to the Karachi Parsi Institute ground every day and ask people for money and just shuffle around asking visitors for five and ten rupees. I have seen his prime and it is a tragedy that no one from Pakistan cricket including, the Board, ever bothered to provide him any medical care or financial support," the head curator at the KPI for last many decades, Hussain said. Dinshaw, who came to Pakistan after partition, has the honor of scoring a double hundred in the Ruby Shield schools tournament in Kolkata

and also in 1946 he led Karachi University to victory against Bombay University to win the Maharaja Kumar of Kutch/Bihar Trophy. "He later represented Sindh and Karachi and was a good batsman. I was pretty close to him and over the years seeing his plight it really hurt me," Pakistan's former Test captain, Hanif Muhammad said. Hanif and Dinshaw toured India together in 1952-53. "I remember when we were introduced to the then Indian President, Dr Rajendra Prasad he specially asked about the young Parsi batsman," Hanif said.

Sohail said that people like Dinshaw were heroes for Pakistan cricket and it was unfortunate the PCB or government never bothered to pay due respect to such figures. Former test leg-spinner, Abdul Qadir noted that Dinshaw was not the first Pakistani player who had got such treatment. "It is sad to hear about the circumstances in which Rusi Dinshaw lived but I recall how our former Test bowler Mahmood Hussain also spent his final days when he didn't even have proper slippers and no one bothered to support him," Qadir said.

ISL AND I LEAGUE NEED TO CO-EXIST: CHETTRI

UMBAI: With whispers that the Indian Soccer League will see shape as soon as July or August and with 30 bids received so far for the eight cities in the fray, Indian football's 'leadman' Sunil Chettri believes that for football to be successful in the country, the I League and the proposed Indian Soccer League needs to work in tandem with each other. The 29-year-old Bengaluru FC striker said there was no point in having two leagues at the same time but axing the I League was something which can never happen. Speaking at an event at Smaaash, he said, “I hope its impact is positive. It has been here for many years and I League is here to stay. It's the right kind of mix that the I League and the ISL has to co-exist. You can't have two different leagues going on at the same time, it can never happen for Indian football. There has to be a right way for merging one end to another and now everything is positive. There will be many franchises coming in and we have won the bid for the 2017 World Cup, so everything is going well for Indian football.” He further added that despite a new league entering the arena,

Its obvious they wouldn't be playing the same way they used to but it will be important as they would share their experience which will be huge for us. But more importantly it will be about coaching,” he said. While most of the players are bound with contracts with their respective I League teams, many of the teams appear to be reluctant in releasing most of them as they find it unviable to set them free in lieu of the hectic I League season. Serena breezes, Sharapova battles M at Miami tennis

MIAMI: World number one Serena Williams breezed into the quarter-finals of the WTA and ATP Miami Masters on Monday while Russian fourth seed Maria Sharapova battled through three sets to advance. Top-seeded defending champion Williams routed US qualifier Coco Vandeweghe 6-3, 6-1 in 78 minutes to book a last-eight matchup with German fifth seed Angelique Kerber. Sharapova rallied to defeat Belgium's Kirsten Flipkens 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 after two hours and four minutes while Kerber took six minutes longer to eliminate Russia's Ekaterina Makarova 64, 1-6, 6-3. Williams smashed 17 winners to only 11 unforced errors and denied her compatriot on all six of her break-point chances to book her 13th quarter-final in 14 Miami appearances. "It was a much tougher match than the scoreline showed," Williams said. "Coco has such an amazing serve, so every time I was returning I was like, 'Hopefully I can touch the ball.' But it was really good for me to win this match." Williams owns a 3-1 career edge over Kerber, whose lone win came two years ago on Cincinnati hardcourts. "Angelique is really good and moves really, really well," Williams said. "I feel better than I did in my first few matches, though, so I hope I can keep going forward."

Smith help Windies hammer Bang By Kushan Sarkar

M

IRPUR: Defending champions West Indies kept their hopes alive of a semi-final berth with a resounding 73run thrashing of hosts Bangladesh in a Group 2 Super 10 match of the ICC World Twenty20 here today. Dwayne Smith with a well-made 72 was the Man of the Match as champs Windies packed too many guns and runs for the hosts. Chasing a target of 172, Bangladesh’s inept batting performance once again brought about their downfall as they bundled out out for a paltry 98 in 19.1 overs. The margin of victory also ensured that West Indies improved their net runrate radically having lost to India in their opening league game with two balls to spare. Leg-spinner Samuel Badree had impressive figures of four for 15 which had more to do with ineptitude of the Bangladeshi batsmen to perform on big stage rather than the venom in his deliveries. Left-arm seamer Krishmar Santokie also chipped in with three wickets for 17. The writing was on the wall once Bangladesh lost their first first three wickets, including two of their senior players, Tamim Iqbal (5) and Shakib al Hasan (0) within the first four overs. Tamim was out when Dwayne Bravo took a low catch at mid-off and Shakib misjudged an incutter from Santokie only to find the stumps rattled. In between, Anamul Haque Bijoy (10), who had started with two boundaries was stumped by Denesh Ramdin off Santokie’s bowling. Skipper Mushfiqur Rahim (22) in company of Mominul Haque (17) tried to resurrect the innings. Momin hit a couple of boundaries including a cheeky scoop over the keeper’s head but then flashed at a rising delivery which Marlon Samuels failed to catch at deep third man. Brief Scores: West Indies 171 for seven in 20 overs (Dwayne Smith 72, Chris Gayle 48; Al-Amin Hossain 3/21) Bangladesh 98 all out in 19.1 overs (Mushfiqur Rahim 22, Mashrafe Mortaza 19; Samuel Badree 4/15, Krishmar Santokie 3/17).

Revandkar’s innings grounds Ghatkopar Jets

MUMBAI: A fine all-round show by Ankit Revandkar and his 96 runs partnership with Manish Rao for the third wicket saw Bandra Heroes ground Ghatkopar Jets by eight wickets in the Tata MovusMitsui Shoji T-20 League, played at Mumbai Police Gymkhana ground here today. Ankit bagged three wickets for 23 runs as the Ghatkopar side scored 127 for 8. Needing 128 to win, Bandra Heroes was in for a shock as they lost two quick

wickets. But Manish Rao was joined by Ankit and the duo plundered the Ghatkopar attack to take their side home without being separated in 16.2 overs. With this win Bandra Heroes joined Ghatkopar Jets with three wins apiece to be at the second spot in the league. Mumbai Police City Riders, despite their unexpected loss to the bottomplaced Taxing Tigers (Shivaji Park) in the morning, continue to head the table.

Anand maintains lead after drawing with Mamedyarov

K

HANTY MANSISYK (Russia): Former World champion Viswanathan Anand remained on course for a rematch with Magnus Carlsen of Norway after securing an easy draw against Shakhriyar Mamedyarov of Azerbaijan in the 10th round of the Candidates Chess tournament here. It turned out to be another good day for Anand as main contemporaries Levon Aronian of Armenia and Vladimir Kramnik of Russia failed to bridge the gap and the Indian ace continues to be in front with a full point lead. Aronian could not use his white pieces to much use against Bulgarian Veselin Topalov and had to settle for a draw while Kramnik’s poor run continued when he failed to spot a tactical stroke that led to a quick loss against compatriot Peter Svidler. The other game of the day between Russians Dmitry Andreikin and Sergey Karjakin also ended in a draw. With just four rounds to come, Anand is sitting pretty training his sights for the next world championship match on 6.5 points. Aronian remains the nearest contender on 5.5 points followed by Mamedyarov.
