When asked whether he had taken the decision under pressure from party leaders, he said, “This is my personal decision and there is no pressure from anyone.” He also made it clear that he will not contest the elections but if the party gave him another assignment (direct entry to parliament through Rajya Sabha) he will take it. BJP city chief Ashish Shelar, who was also present on this occasion, said, “Ram Naik is not taking political sanyas. He is just not contesting elections.” However, party sources revealed that Naik is reportedly angling for a Lok Sabha ticket for his daughter Vishakha Kulkarni from Mumbai North constituency. OPINIONS Has the launch of BBM on android phones stolen WhatsApp’s thunder? Varsha Ganesh Student No. Whatsapp has now become a habit. People will have both BBM and WhatsApp on their phones but I don’t think they would delete Whatsapp for BBM. Mamta Raikar Banker No. I am used to WhatsApp and never owned a Blackberry as such. So for me it is Whatsapp that remains on my phone.
Suresh Raja Banker No. Both these applications have their own advantages. WhatsApp has become popular among every android phone user. It looks remote that this preference would change quickly. Punit Bhavsar Working professional Maybe. I have read that BBM is safer with regard to security and that could be a plus point which might make android users switch to BBM. Mohit Alva Working professional No. WhatsApp has already become very popular among people. BBM can be another chat application on phones but I don’t think it can replace WhatsApp now.

eteran BJP leader and former union minister Ram Naik (80) yesterday stunned the party circle by announcing his plans of not contesting the Lok Sabha elections in future. The three-term MLA and five-term MP disclosed that he was taking a backseat paving the way for younger leadership to enter the poll fray. Party sources described Naik’s act as an indirect rap to another party veteran Lal Krishna Advani and senior Shiv Sena leader Manohar Joshi. The 75-year-old Sena leader who met party president Uddhav Thackeray yesterday is still angling for a party ticket for Mumbai South Central constituency. Speaking to newspersons here at Mumbai Marathi Patrakar Sangh, Naik remarked “Though I am 80 years old, still physically fit and I can work as any middle aged person, I decided not to contest any elections in the future”. He added, “I will be active and be a responsible member of the party and carry out all the responsibilities assigned to me by it.” Naik, a commerce graduate, had come to Mumbai in search of a job. He got a job as an upper division clerk in the city. Then, he got in touch with Bharatiya Jana Sangh in 1960 and consequently entered politics. He first contested an assembly election in 1978 and won

Rahul asks state Congress to make party stronger PTI

ongress vice-president Rahul Gandhi, who was on a two-day state visit to assess the performance of the state Congress and meet activists from all districts, yesterday asked the state Congress to make the party so strong that it will be able to form a government on its own. However, Rahul faced angry supporters of the CWG scam tainted Pune MP Suresh Kalmadi. They were demanding the reinstatement of Kalmadi in the party fold. On Wednesday, Rahul’s Pune tour began with interactions between him and Congress activists from 22 districts at the Balewadi sports complex on the outskirts of Pune. Apart from discussing the political scenario, they analysed various issues related to th eparty’s performance in district councils and

During the meeting, a group of Kalmadi supporters pushed their agenda. Congress’s deputy leader in Pune Municipal Corporation Bandu Gaikwad took up the issue
of Suresh Kalmadi’s suspension from the party and pleaded that the party is suffering in Pune area ever since Kalmadi’s exit. Gaikwad, a staunch supporter of Kalmadi, presented a statement to Gandhi demanding Kalmadi’s reinstatement. Rahul’s meetings with the district chiefs of Congress party were held behind closed doors. However, reliable sources in the party said that there were some discussions about whether the party should get into a seat sharing agreement with the NCP in the Lok Sabha elections. Most district chiefs suggested to Rahul Gandhi that the Congress should not make an alliance with the NCP in their districts. Rahul said that grassroot workers of the party would be encouraged to contest in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls and in Assembly elections which are due in some states. Rahul pointed out that grassroot party workers had a major role to play in the Congress organisation. He also said that factionalism was a major hurdle for the party and stressed on the need for better communication between the party leadership and workers. suyash.padate@afternoondc.in

Written by Gary Bass, it details with merciless clarity a particular era in America’s foreign policy that the country had no reason to be proud of. The killings of Hindus during the Bangladesh War amounted to mass genocide, he says, and Nixon continued to support the Pakistani leaders behind it, as did Kissinger. Both knew what was happening in Pakistan, and the President (at the time) sent material and arms to that country to intimidate India. Shockingly and in secret, he even asked China to send its soldiers to our border, risking the Soviet Union coming into the war and even nuclear power being used. To Nixon, Yahya Khan compared with Abraham Lincoln! For him, Indira Gandhi was a ‘witch’ or a ‘bitch’. As for Kissinger, described in the book as becoming ‘increasingly erratic’, perhaps overworked, Indians were all ‘bastards’ and we needed a ‘mass famine’ to cut us down to size. Like we said, it’s not a pretty picture of American foreign policy, but the book definitely looks like a gripping read. Not least because the Blood in the title refers to Consul General in Dhaka at the time, Archer Blood. And the telegram that is a peg for the book, Residents of the shanties that line the start of the toney Worli Seaface opposite the near defunct Worli Dairy often walk along this old jetty wall at which boats used to tie up, was signed by him and 20 of his to reach the stone protuberance at the end. Somewhere in the grounds, the peacocks must have been roosting, safer than they would be anywhere else in this city which seems to stop at nothing in its headless race towards prosperity. Later, when it was time to leave, the Governor and his guest came down the red-carpeted steps hand in hand, an obvious expression of the warmth that was felt. And another successful event came to an end at Raj Bhavan.

llegal mobile towers installed atop buildings in Navi Mumbai have come under the scanner of the civic body’s department, which has now restarted initiating legal action against unauthorised mobile towers installed by various cellular service providers. There are a number of complaints and protest letters been sent to the civic authority from the residents of Alaknanda CHS of Vashi’s Sector 14, since people are facing health issues especially the ones staying on the top floors of such buildings. Dr. Prashant Aroskar, a resident of one such society said, “There are no official records of these illegal towers. As per the earlier records only MTNL and Idea networks were permitted but as the date of expiry came closer
more and more antennas were added since 2010 and the high voltage radiations are causing health problems to the members of the society as well as the nearby societies”. Anu Shrivastava, the only top floor resident member of
Alaknanda Society’s B Wing stated that, “I have been suffering from several health problems due to the radiation emitted from these illegal towers, and yet the managing committee of the society and the NMMC officials have done nothing”.
Aroskar added, “The society has only gained monetarily and therefore lets illegal additions to these towers take place without seeking permission from any authority. Some members from the managing committee have also given permission for installation of an extra tower on the B Wing of our society. A complaint has been made to the NMMC all over again and also to the Vashi Police Station”. The new rules for mobile towers being clearly state that permissions are a must from the top floor residents. They should also seek permissions from the adjacent societies who are equally affected. As per DOT guidelines of 2006, no mobile tower should be installed within a 100-meter radius of hospitals and educational institutes. khushboo.panjabi@afternoondc.in

Kulthe added that if the government fails to meet these demands, the federation will declare an indefinite strike in December.

he Bombay High Court on Tuesday asked principal secretaries of Home, Urban Development and Law and Judiciary departments of Maharashtra to coordinate in taking security measures in Arthur Road Prison in Mumbai and Taloja Jail in Navi Mumbai. The principal secretaries of the three departments should sit together to work out modalities in this regard in the larger public interest and if necessary these officers can take help of Advocate General, a bench headed by Justice S.C. Dharmadhikari observed.
The court was hearing a petition filed by prison inmate Major Ramesh Upadhyay, an accused in the September 2008 Malegaon bomb blasts case, reports PTI. Upadhyay had written a letter to the court raising concerns about existing and under-construction highrises that pose a security threat to jail inmates. The letter was converted into a writ petition and advocate Shubdha Khot appointed amicus curaie (friend of the court) to assist in the matter. The government had earlier appointed a committee which recommended certain measures to
ensure security in and around prisons in the wake of high-rises coming up in localities near jails. Observing that no concrete step had been taken till date on this issue, the bench directed the authorities concerned to seriously consider this subject. The matter has been adjourned to September 28. Earlier, Principal Secretary, Medha Gadgil (Appeals and Security) had stated rules were in place under the development control regulations spelling out conditions for construction of high-rises around prisons in the state.

Ponder awhile...
I
N the week in which two sickening, senseless jihadi massacres occurred I found it ironic, if not bizarre, that I came under vicious attack on social media sites for daring to suggest in my last column that Islamic radicalization could have been part of the problem in Muzaffarnagar. Between gazing in horror at images of innocent shoppers massacred in a Nairobi mall and innocent Christians massacred in a Peshawar church I read with growing disbelief tweets from Indians, both Muslim and Hindu, expressing the extraordinary view that jihadi influences in India were a myth. In my column last week I said that the most obvious signs of religiosity, evident from Kashmir to Kanyakumari these days, were the beards and burqas that now prevail in Muslim neighbourhoods and so I was attacked for implying that all bearded Muslim men and veiled Muslim women were HE tussle between L.K. Advani and terrorists. This was not my implication. But, I Narendra Modi for the first posi- was definitely suggesting that increased use tion in the party has not ended. These lines came often to my mind as I read the angry response to my having written last week in this column that the towns and villages in the vicinity of the Deoband seminary had been radicalised since the nineties when Omar Sheikh took his foreign hostages to a village in this part of Western Uttar Pradesh and imprisoned them there for months. Anyone who has even the smallest idea of rural life in India will confirm

there for the first time after the spat with regard to the choice of Narendra Modi as the chairman of the 2014 poll campaign committee. What was well known was he was there because the chief minister of Madhya Pradesh is his ardent admirer and accepts him as the tallest leader of the party. The body language of Advani clearly showed that Advani was not happy to share the stage with Narendra Modi. When Modi touched his feet – he touched his feet twice – Advani clearly showed his displeasure. He did not turn towards him even slightly but he looked away. There was no mistaking the hostility of Advani towards Modi. The prime ministerial candidate, however, took it all in his stride. He made a rabble-rousing speech and at the end of it, he was congratulated by all the leaders on the stage — including Advani. Advani is still not reconciled to the fact of choice of Modi as the PM candidate. One thing is clear: He has not given up the idea of becoming the prime minister. Evidently, Modi is lying low and while all the time declaring Advani is the guiding light of the party, quietly, sitting pretty in his new position – with total support of the president of the party, Rajnath Singh.

For reasons of political correctness these are not things we discuss in ‘secular’ India but it could be time that we did before we reach the stage that Europe has where Islamist aggressiveness has caused countries to ban minarets and veils. Indian Muslims face little or no discrimination by comparison but there is no end to the litany of grievances, magnified by our secular, leftist intellectuals. From these worthies we have not heard one word of criticism of what is going on in Syria but they have been quick to condemn the military coup in Egypt and express their support for the Muslim brotherhood. From them we have not heard one word of criticism of the brutal massacre of Christians in that Peshawar church but try to hint, as I did, at the growth of jihadi type Islamism in India and they become afflicted by twitter diarrhea. They have not hesitated for a moment to blame Narendra Modi for ‘communalising’ the atmosphere in Uttar Pradesh but they would never dare suggest that it could be the Samajwadi Party government that is behind this.

Aadhaar is worst misadventure of our country THE Supreme Court has ruled that the Aadhaar card is optional and cannot be the sole proof for availing the government’s various schemes. While the honourable apex court’s order is laudable, one has to point out painfully that lakhs of citizens had already suffered while trying to get this agonizing Aadhaar card last year when the infrastructural facilities for dealing with the whole of the country’s population was simply not there. In Dombivli (East), for example, in the centre operating in an auditorium, there were long queues every day and I had to go three times and stand in the queues for several hours just to get the form since only a limited number of them were given out each day. Nandan Nilekani’s project was totally unfeasible for a country like ours and unnecessary when the Voters’ Identity

SHEER WASTE: When we have the voters’ identity cards, ration cards and PAN cards where is the need for the Aadhaar cards? Cards were issued only a few years back and the PAN cards were also there besides the ration cards. The Aadhaar scheme will go down in history as the worst motive, since long. This is the basic reason why the undesired communal conflicts take place. All divisive laws should be scrapped immediately in the interest of communal harmony among Hindus and Muslims and thus, permanent peace in India. — Hansraj Bhat, Borivli
Safeguarding against terror
FIND HIM NOW! In order to keep their image intact, the Mumbai cops should nab Afzal Usmani quickly.
THE news of the pattern of Nairobi Mall terror attack allegedly by AlShabaab, a group patronised by AlQaeda reminds us very much of 26/11 Mumbai attack in Taj Mahal Hotel and other areas in Colaba on that fateful night. The continuity of the attack and especially on the non-Muslims is indeed worrying and the way the number of casualties is rising, the panic has naturally gripped Nairobi town, wherein otherwise such type of terror attack is something unknown. In Mumbai the terror attack also did focus on the Israeli dominated areas in and around Colaba. Now onwards, around the world, in all the shopping malls, the security needs to be foolproof for the safety of the shoppers.
THANK God. Supreme Court came to the rescue of aam aadmi. This useless Aadhaar card was making the life of people miserable as it was being made forcibly compulsory in all walks of life. This is really a landmark judgement heartily welcomed by the common man. At least now, this card should be scrapped without further wastage of hard earned public money. — Laxminarayanan B., Mumbai
THE basic concept in issuing earnest before the situation goes out of hand. Even vehicular traffic is getting held up due to the hawker’s encroachment on the road, leading to many road accidents. Instead of trapping the hawkers, residents and shoppers BMC should find an amicable solution, so that the hawkers will get a separate entity and the shoppers on the roadside may not get disturbed. In many of the housing complexes in Chembur area we find that shops are part and parcel of the building resulting in total chaos and the presence of hawkers make the matter worse. There is no option but to move these hawkers to a Hawker’s Zone so that the roads get cleared for pedestrian movement. It is time to keep the hawkers away from the focal points and provide them best facilities at alternate place so that this perennial problem can be solved once for all. — S. Check excessive currency IT was recently reported that a sum of Rs.9.7 million in excess of the
amount estimated, ordered and printed in the Indian mints had found its way to the sensitive vaults of the RBI mostly in the form of notes in denominations of Rs.1,000 and Rs.500. This is so alarming and it is incumbent on the part of the RBI to carry out intensive operations to gain imminent access to the source from where this criminal anti-national activities are emanating and nip it in the bud as otherwise the country would run the risk of destabilisation of the economy, thus defeating all the constructive measures that are proposed to be undertaken to restore the economy exuding optimism on the latest policy decision of the US Fed Reserve providing flexibility. Dangerous driving IT is very disturbing and a big headache for New Panvel residents due to speeding two-wheelers, especially young school and college students and unnecessary honking in the roads. Small children are using the roads of Sector 3 for going to school of DAV and Shantiniketan and the speeding two-wheelers pose a great threat to their lives. Sometimes the bikers remove the silencers and race during night, which has become a big nuisance to residents due to deafening noise. Often accidents occur on this road. Home minister R.R. Patil directed the police to take stringent action and immediately register an FIR to ensure the strictest punishment for these errant bikers. Authorities should implement the home minister’s order and start taking action to stop the reckless driving and honking on this road and save the people from accidents and noise pollution. — Probir Kumar Bose, New Panvel
Pak panel’s visit redundant
USELESS EXERCISE: The Pak panel will undoubtedly submit a report blaming India for the terror attacks, so what is the point in allowing them to cross-examine witnesses after five years have passed? THIS is with reference to the report ‘Pak judicial team arrives in the city; to cross-examine officers today’ (ADC, Sep 24). One fails to understand why the Pak panel has been allowed to revisit Mumbai with permission to cross-examine the witnesses in the 26/11 massacre. Even after nearly five years, the so-called trial of this case has not moved an inch in their court and as is their habit, they are seeking more details, this time, from the witnesses. The statements of Abu Jundal and David Headley have proven very clearly that the genocidal attack was conceived and
executed by their own men and the mastermind is still roaming free, recruiting armies of jehadis all the time. So why this drama now? What is likely to happen is that the panel will go through the motions of a crossexamination and go back and submit the report which they must have brought with them saying that the 26/11 was our own making and they have nothing to do with it. Having known them all these decades, one wonders why our government keeps on giving in to their demands. — Dr. V. Subramanyan, Thane

THE HOBBIT - AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY
Bilbo Baggins is swept into a quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakenshield. Their journey will take them into the Wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Giant Spiders, Shapeshifters and Sorcerers. Although their goal lies to the East and the wastelands of the Lonely Mountain first they must escape the goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature that will change his life forever ... Gollum. Here, alone with Gollum, on the shores of an underground lake, the unassuming Bilbo Baggins not only discovers depths of guile and courage that surprise even him, he also gains possession of Gollum’s “precious” ring that holds unexpected and useful qualities ... A simple, gold ring that is tied to the fate of all Middle-earth in ways Bilbo cannot begin to. Pix, 9 p.m.

Writing romances Adite Banerjie, author of recently released Mills & Boon novel, The Indian Tycoon’s Marriage Deal, talks to Rhea Dhanbhoora about her journey from being a fan of the series to an author under the romance label
>> After being the first runner-up on Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa Season 6, Lauren Gottileb has her sights set on Bollywood
>> Adite didn’t start out as a writer, but was into business journalism for a reputed newspaper
B
orn and brought up in Mumbai, Adite read her first Mills & Boon romance in school. Anne Mather was one of her favourite authors and she and her school friends would giggle about the ‘hot scenes’ in the steamy novels. She even admits to being one of the several girls in love with the TDH (tall, dark, handsome) heroes and secretly fantasising about them. Now, she’s a Mills & Boon author herself, after winning a Harlequin Aspiring Authors contest. She tells us more about what it’s like to go from voraciously reading these books to being the author of one. Did you always want to write? I grew up in Mumbai, went to school at Mount Mary’s Convent in Bandra and graduated from Narsee Monjee College. After college, I did a course in business journalism and ever since then I have been writing. With your father working in the film industry, you grew up around Bollywood — did that influence your writing? You can’t escape Bollywood and its unique brand of romance, especially if you have grown up in Mumbai. When my father’s friends visited, there would be ‘story sessions’ about movies. So, some of that did have an influence on how I thought about storylines. With your love for romance novels and Bollywood, why business journalism? I started my career in general reporting. Business journalism was coming into its own and there were plenty of opportunities for those who wanted to get into it. The first advertisement and marketing paper, Brand Equity (weekly supplement in Economic Times), was being launched and I was offered a position, so I took it up. You’re working on a script — what is it about? After a fulfilling career as a journalist, I wanted to try my hand at fiction. But, it was only after I had done a few online courses in screenwriting that I was confident enough to write screenplays. I was commissioned to write a script by filmmaker Runjiv Kapur and it is expected to go into production next year. It is a true story about one woman’s fight to protect the environment and how she singlehandedly takes on a corrupt corporation and government.
What inspired you to enter the Harlequin Aspiring Authors audition contest? Did you expect to win? Frankly, I wasn’t expecting to win the short story contest and it came as a big surprise when I did. I decided to enter on a whim. Winning the contest was a wonderful experience. It gave me the opportunity to work with an experienced Harlequin editor who helped me hone my skills. Once my short story was selected, I had to expand it into a novel. So, I drew up character sketches, the storyline and a synopsis and sent it off to my editor. She gave me feedback and based on that I wrote the manuscript for the novel. Do you plan on diversifying into different genres? I would like to experiment with a combination of genres in the romance category, including romantic thrillers. My second book (also for Harlequin India) has elements of a romantic-comedy. What sparked the idea for your debut novel? The short story contest had specific guidelines and mentioned that the story should have popular M&B themes such as revenge or marriage of convenience. One of my favourite M&B storylines are those with the revenge theme. The first idea that popped into my head was of a girl who wants revenge against the man who destroyed her family. Close on its heels came the thought, what if she falls in love with her enemy’s son? There’s always one heartthrob in a romantic novel. Tell us a little bit about yours! Krish Dev, with the right amount of arrogance, oodles of charm, is also super-sexy! What inspired your heroine? I love to write about feisty heroines. And Maya Shome, the heroine of my book, is one such girl.
Adite’s fAvourite...

Now I waNt to act!
Lauren Gottlieb talks to Rohit Pramar about how she only wants to concentrate on acting now
A
merican performer Lauren Gottlieb may have ended up as the first runner up on reality show Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 6, but she is not disappointed. Buzz is that Laurent, who shot to fame in India with the film ABCD: Any Body Can Dance, is all set to make a foray into Hindi films. In an exclusive chat, she reveals her plans.
Are you disappointed about losing Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 6? To be honest, I am really not. I gave some of the best performances on the show and had big stars praising me. Many people voted for me and got us into the finals. To get recognised for the kind of work I do is what I have always wanted. So, I got so much anyway! Do you have plans to stay back in India? I’ve travelled to many parts of the world, but I believe in destiny. When I first got the offer for Jhalak, I took it up. To be honest, I’ve just started living here now as I was occupied with the show earlier. The last time I lived alone was six years ago when I moved to Hollywood. Now that I’m here in Bollywood, I’m really excited. So, what’s your plan of action for now? I want to get into acting. I know I am a good actor and I want to explore that part of me. Now that you’ve mastered Bollywood dancing, are you open to doing an item number in a Hindi film? That’s not really my goal. I first entered with ABCD, which did well and got good reviews, and then I participated in Jhalak. My journey has been fairly good and the next one will be even better. Have you signed any new projects? I’ve received a couple of scripts, but I’m not in a place to reveal anything now. I’m looking for that specific goal that makes me put my heart and everything to it. Are you still continuing with your Hindi classes? That’s one thing I need to catch up on. I conversed a bit in Hindi on Jhalak, but now I’m going to take it up seriously. My dream is to act in a Hindi film and converse completely in the language.

F
lashes of glitter on Roberto Cavalli’s runway models, a heavy dose in Tom Ford’s collection at London Fashion Week and a dash in the recent Pucci luxury sportswear line, all point towards one thing — glitter is back. Since we’re not all models, pulling off the trend if you’re not a teenager is a little hard as it has the tendency to look cheap if not worn right, especially if you’re above a certain age. Here are a few rules to stick to while attempting to re-create your favourite glitter trends so that you look fashionable and not trashy.
DreSS well If you’re thinking of choosing glitter when it comes to a dress, be very, very careful. Unless you’re 19-years-old or a model, there are very few occasions when you’ll actually be able to carry off a bedazzled dress. If you still want to go for it, choose a subdued colour (black works best) and a simple cut. Avoid anything figure hugging and skip accessorising. If you’d like to play it safe, choose a dress with a glitter trimmed border or glitter accents instead.
Go caSual The best way to wear glitter at any age is on a t-shirt. Again, make sure you keep it simple, you don’t want to be walking around with a bejeweled chest. Small accents will spruce up a dull t-shirt and make a casual outfit a bit dressy.
Shy people can pick subtle shimmers while those with a bold streak can wear polish with chunky glitter bits. Keep your nails short so that no matter what colour you choose, it looks age appropriate.
tiGHten it up Avoid glitter bottoms if you’re older. There are no skirts, shorts or trousers that will make it look any less tacky. Try accessorising with a glitter belt. Make sure it’s skinny so it just catches the eye without stealing attention away from your look.
eye Spy Avoid chunky glitter if you’re older, even if it’s big news on the runway. Don’t avoid glitter eyeshadow completely though. Just make sure the bits of glitter are very fine and the colours you choose are more subtle: golds, dewy lavenders and soft navy are good options. Leave the brighter colours to the kids.
Forget jewellery, clutches are the new, trendy accessory. A glitter clutch on a somber outfit will allow you to add that touch of glitter you’re craving off the runway, but tastefully enough so you don’t look tacky. Pick jewel tone colours.
Say it witH your SHoeS
“Wearing glitter for an older woman is all about balance. Glitter on accessories such as an evening clutch or earrings looks festive and regal and is perfect for an evening out but let one piece become the star of your look. For example, pair a gorgeous glitter clutch or a statement pair of earrings with a more subtle outfit to highlight each piece and avoid looking like an overdressed Christmas tree.” — Sonali Lalvani, CEO of toniQ accessories

Pastels are all the rage this season and January nails the trend in her blush-toned dress by Givenchy. We like that her makeup and accessories are next to nil as this gives her an ethereal look. This look, while a far cry from her usual bold outfits on the red carpet, suits her well.
The funny girl might have poked fun at her looks on her hit show 30 Rock but there’s no denying she’s a babe! Tina looks amazing in this electric blue halter dress that shows off her amazing figure. And even though it betrayed her with a nip-slip later, who cares!?
We’ve always loved that Christina flaunts her killer curves in an elegantly sexy way. This black Christian Siriano dress shows off her fab figure and we love the nipped in waist and lace detailing on the sleeves. She channels old Hollywood glamour with her hair and makeup.

Although we can see through her skirt, we have to say that we’re completely in love with this powder blue dress by Jenny Packham. It’s feminine, flirty and a lot of fun. Sure it would have looked a little more classy with a proper skirt, but Julianne has the body to pull off this look.
She might have joked that hers was the hardest working dress on the red carpet but there’s no denying that Sofia knows how to flaunt her curves. The Latina beauty is perfection in her custom-made, bold red Vera Wang dress.

Glitter shoes are a great way to wear a lot of glitter without looking ridiculous. If you want your look to stay casual, try glitter ballerina flats. On a night out you can wear glitter pumps. You can even wear slippers or sandals with a touch of glitter so as not to go overboard.
Although you can wear eyeshadow, it’s a good idea to opt for glitter liner instead. A well-defined line near your lashes is enough to add a little dazzle to your look.

Too scared to wear glitter? Incorporate it in your favourite nailpolish shade instead.
Ditch the body glitter. No, really. Don’t put sparkle on your shoulders and for heaven’s sake, leave the shimmer filled backs to club-hopping teens. A little shimmer on your cheeks won’t do any harm, just make sure it’s very subtle. With glitter makeup, focus on only one feature. Don’t pair glitter lipgloss with glitter blush and eyeliner or you’ll look like a fashion disaster.

new treatMent: VaMpire FaceliFt
The name is deceiving if you think a ‘vampire’ facelift involves any of the pop culture popularised vampire hunks. The Vampire Facelift is a Platelet Rich Plasma Treatment (PRP) which is already popular abroad. And now, VLCC launched it for the first time in India as a USFDA approved system. VLCC’s Vampire Facelift involves using the client’s own platelets for removing signs of ageing and claims to be more effective than other beauty treatments available in India. The procedure involves extracting a sample of blood from which platelets are isolated for the preparation of Autologous Platelet Rich Plasma (A-PRP), which is injected after it’s processed. PRP does not involve surgery and minimises the risks of reactions. Research confirms its safety. VLCC Founder and Mentor Vandana Luthra says that it is the ideal solution for reduction of wrinkles and fine lines, fading of dark circles and growth of collagen. The treatment involves three sittings, each for around two hours. A minimum gap of a month has to be maintained between each session for visible improvements. price `32,000 per session

1. Skin type If you have dry skin, give powder blush a skip and opt for a cream based blush. If you use a powder blush on top of dry skin, your skin is going to look dull and the makeup will not blend well. If you have ageing skin, this is also the type of blush for you as it adds a luminous glow and doesn’t settle into lines as easily as powder. 2. now iS tHe tiMe Cream blush isn’t the best product to use during the summer as the humidity and moisture can make it slip and slide across your face. So, keeping in mind Mumbai’s weather, now is the right time to invest in a cream blush. 3. apply it While experts believe that cream blush
must be applied with a brush, if you’re a beginner, using your fingers might give you better results. Take two of your middle fingers and stipple the cream blush from your cheekbones to the apples of your cheeks. 4. Motion MatterS However, don’t blend in straight strokes. To get a more natural look, move your fingers in a circular motion. Remember to start with just a little blush as you can always add more. 5. tone it Down Been a little heavy handed with the blush? Tone it down by dabbing a little translucent powder across your cheeks. A blending sponge is also a great tool in helping you remove excess blush.

Lunchbox don’ts E
ating employs your taste buds as well as your olfactory senses. Which is why every time you get your amazing fish dish to office, most of your co-workers are wrinkling their nose at you. No matter how tasty a dish is, if it offends the nostrils, it will create more enemies than friends. Be sympathetic to your colleagues’ senses and avoid packing these foods in your lunchbox: Shutterstock
While Irrfan Khan’s lunchbox only brought him love, if you seem to be getting rude stares from your colleagues whenever you open yours, it’s probably got nothing to do with you and everything to do with the food you get. Dev Goswami gives you a list of foods that you should not carry to work >> If disapproving sniffs greet you when you open your lunch, it’s probably because you’re carrying one of the foods from this list
Fish
Any type of fish, no matter how delicious it is or how it’s cooked, will stink up your office space. And while canned fish smells a little less, it still has an offensive odour.
Eggs If you can’t imagine your day without an egg, then eat it before you get to work. Boiled eggs are the most offensive, but even a fried egg or an omelette can envelop your office with a pretty foul stink. And, forget about that egg and cheese sandwich — this combination is one of the worst dishes to get to work.
Lamb If you’re active in the kitchen, you would know how your house starts to smell like the minute you boil mutton. So, it’s quite logical that you shouldn’t pack it in your lunchbox.
broccoLi Sniff your lunchbox the next time you’ve stored broccoli in it and you’ll understand why the vegetable finds a place on this list. Broccoli in a box is not the most pleasant smell in the world.
bacon If you’re a bacon lover, you might find it hard to believe that many people are put off by its smell. However, you can make a slight compromise — make sure it’s cut into tiny pieces and incorporated into your meal. It is those greasy, fried strips that are a cause for worry.
onions & garLic Do we really have to tell you why? Onions and garlic not only stink up an entire room, they’ll also leave you with foul breath.

« career advice gEtting Work caLLs on WEEkEnDs? FinD out What to Do I work at an advertising firm and our workdays are usually quite hectic, which is why I love my weekends! However, I recently got a promotion and since then something has changed — my boss has been calling me every weekend to talk work. At first, I thought it was a one-off incident, but now it’s become a regular thing. Quite obviously, I do not like it but I’m quite scared to raise the topic with my boss. What can I do? — rachana Dave, mahim Dear rachana, Working in an advertising firm, you can take it for granted that normal work-hours or even work-days aren’t applicable to your field. What you’ve said, while not the ideal situation, is definitely not surprising and the fact that your boss has been calling about work on weekends, just after you’ve been promoted, indicates that it comes with extra responsibility. That being said, everyone, no matter what field, deserves and needs a weekly break. So, what should you do? You need to find a middle ground. Telling your boss to completely stop calling you on weekends isn’t the best strategy, but at the same time, you need to inform him that you won’t always be available to answer calls and you most definitely won’t be able to do any actual work.
I have been working with a co-worker of mine on a big project for the past two months. A week ago, she had to take emergency leave for personal reasons and our boss, without realising that the deadline for the project was looming, approved her leave. I am scared at the prospect of handling the project on my own. Should I tell my boss that I might not be able to manage? — Priya khanna, malad Dear Priya, When you say you ‘might’ not be able to handle it, it seems to me that you aren’t sure about it. And so, I’d like to say that it is times like these that sets apart good workers from the excellent ones. This is a fine opportunity for you to showcase your dependability and skills. I’d advice that you take stock of what you have to do and whether you can do it on your own and whether your job is worth doing that. However, if you do feel that it would get too much for you, there’s nothing wrong with going to your boss and asking for a helping hand. It is possible that he/she forgot about your colleague handling this project and would be more than willing to get someone else to replace her. send your questions to womansworld@afternoondc.in before Wednesday

eed a fix? And, when we say fix, we mean emergency fixes that will save you from getting red faced in an embarrassing situation, thanks to some speedy measures. It happens to all of us and can take place most unexpectedly. A fallen hem at a wedding, a broken heel on your way to a date or a stuck zipper when your meeting is due — all of these can put you in quite a fix and actually seem cataclysmic to your existence at that moment. While you just can’t help some situations, there are a few that you can deal with quickly and smoothly if you know a few tricks. We tell you about these common faux pas and how to deal with them swiftly.

For a make-do hem in a hurry, use short pieces of masking tape or duct tape to fix a fallen hem. Lighting professionals and musicians usually use duct tape for their equipment, so locating some at an event shouldn’t be tough. If everything else fails, go find a first aid centre and ask them for a few bandaids to fix the problem.
Falling Bra StrapS

There’s nothing more annoying than having to keep pulling up your bra straps. A piece of well placed duct tape can fix that problem in a jiffy. You can also use a small safety pin to fix a broken bra strap. If you can’t find a safety pin, your last resort should be to go to a washroom and tie the straps or find a stapler and staple them together.
Broken heel This is a tough situation to be in. Try to locate some strong glue to temporarily fix your heel. It’s always good to have the glue on hand for other shoe emergencies as well, such as fixing soles that come undone. If you can’t do anything about it, you could always try sitting in one place the entire evening.
Stuck Zipper There are two things that save you from a stuck zipper in an emergency — a bar of soap or a wax candle. Try rubbing a bar of soap or a wax candle onto the problem area. With a little manipulation, the zipper should come unstuck.
Static electricity If you notice that static can electricity is making your skirt hemline or kurta ride up uncomfortably or indecently, quickly dab some moisturiser on your legs or body. It is a foolproof method that always works.
underarm SWeat Do you see a sweat stain making its way out of your underarm area that is becoming visible on the top/dress that you are wearing? You could try to dry it with a hand dryer in the bathroom but effectiveness depends on the material. Cotton, jersey or knit might be okay, but if it’s silk, it will leave a permanent stain. You could also try slipping a thin paper towel under each armpit to absorb a bit of the moisture.

T
here have been times when friends have helped people come out of their gravest emotional traumas. There’s a reason why our friends are referred to as our extended families. However, the same way in which there are good people and bad people, there are good friends and bad friends. Some have a positive influence on you while some have a negative influence. Here, we are about to talk about four types of friends who can offer you nothing but toxic friendships and what you can do about them.
The Promise Breaker According to the book When Friendship Hurts: How to Deal With Friends Who Betray, Abandon, or Wound You by Jan Yager, a friend who constantly disappoints you or breaks promises, most likely does that because she herself was constantly disappointed during her formative years. You should find a way to detach yourself. If she makes a plan to meet for coffee, say “Sure”, but presume that the plan is not going to happen. Also, they might be unaware that they are actually doing this repeatedly with you. So, let them know that this is the countless time they have backed out on something that they promised.

I got married to Cynthia, the woman of my dreams and the love of my life, about a month ago. We are both quite traditional and decided to wait before living and loving together. Our wedding was perfect! Such happiness.
The self-aBsorBed
And, our first night on our honeymoon was well worth the wait! The hotel we stayed in was budget and the bed was small. But, it did not matter. I went to sleep happily thinking of our days and nights together.
In the case of a self-absorbed friend, she listens to you only because she is waiting to speak... about herself. Give her the benefit of doubt and let her know that she has been talking for a long time and only about herself. If she considers this and you see that she’s making an effort to mend her ways, then things should get better eventually. But, if you think that she’s making no effort to change, then you need to consider if you’re getting enough out of the friendship to make it worth continuing, even though it’s decidedly lopsided.
But, later that night, I woke up freezing! And I learned my dear wife was a...
The discloser Every time you tell him or her, “This should just be between the two of us,” it stays between the two of you only till the time that friend gets access to a phone or meets another friend. This kind of friend cannot and will not keep your secrets. So, decrease the level of intimacy that you share with him or her.

The faulT finder Nothing you do, say or wear is good enough for this overly critical friend. The fault-finder was probably raised by judgmental parents with equally hypercritical siblings. It’s a hard trait to reverse, and your friend is probably unaware that she is so critical. If you value their friendship, try to tell them how rotten his or her behaviour makes you feel. If they still don’t improve, before calling it quits, give something a last try — try finding faults in the fault finder friend and they may get your point. But, don’t get your hopes up; in most cases, your friend will not able be to deal with the criticism and they might just break the friendship.

LUCK MAKES A DIFFERENCE
Arav Chowdharry who is playing Bhishma in Siddharth Kumar Tewary’s most ambitious project, Mahabharat is winning accolades for his performance from the first episode. He bares his heart in an exclusive chat with Sandeep Hattangadi By Sandeep Hattangadi What has the journey from modelling to acting been like? It’s been good. Quite exciting actually! I’ve been a model for 10 years, done lots of ad films and advertisements and then got my first movie offer, Laado, for which I later won the National Award. I later bagged 88 Antop Hill, Lakshya, Dhoom, No smoking etc and there was no looking back. How did you get the role of Bhishma in Mahabharat? I was called by the production house to audition for the role and I asked them if they were sure about me acting as Bhishma. I mean I could have played another character, since I wasn’t sure about Bhishma but they wanted me to audition for the part and I did. I actually auditioned 3-4 times before
getting selected. The show was going to take sometime to go on floors and a month got pushed to nine months. That waiting phase was a struggle but it finally happened and I am happy playing Bhishma. What special preparations have you made for the role? During the waiting period, I researched on my character, worked out to get the physique and get into the character. I needed a warrior like physique and mannerism and worked out really hard to gain 10-12 kgs of muscle mass. I also groomed myself to convincingly look the part and researched on the speaking style and behavior and inculcated those. How were the sword fighting and horse riding scenes? aking a strong case for approval of their proposed airline JV, Tatas and Singapore Airlines have said that the venture would create significant job opportunities in India and would boost the country’s image as an international investment destination. The two partners have also listed out a number of other economic benefits for the country from their new venture, Tata SIA Airlines Ltd, where Tata Sons would hold 51 % stake and Singapore Airlines 49 %. “The brand ‘SIA’ is recognised worldwide and the expansion of the ‘SIA’ in India will signal the ability of the country to attract leading names from the international circuit to benefit the Indian market and customers. High foreign investment inflows would further strengthen the civil aviation sector,” the two partners said in an application to the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB), while seeking approval for USD 49 million (rpt million) worth FDI by SIA. The two groups have also emphasised that investment from SIA and operations of the proposed JV would have the potential for significant foreign exchange earnings in India. Tatas and SIA, which are
together attempting an aviation venture for the third time, also said that the venture would generate significant job opportunities and that the JV would hire Indian residents to establish its operations here. The job avenues would be for “qualified pilots, technicians, managers and skilled labour in India”. Amid many players facing challenging times in the domestic aviation space, SIA has also affirmed its commitment to long-term presence in the country. Besides, the two entities have said that the new venture would also enhance business opportunities for various stakeholders including vendors, suppliers and contractors. Tatas said that the proposed airline venture would tap the synergies with its various group companies, while SIA would bring on board the technical expertise and best business practices with regard to aviation business. They also said that the JV would benefit from economies of scale offered by vendors to SIA in relation to procurement of aircraft, engineering services, spares and infrastructure. The proposed airline also plans to offer “renting and leasing (except financial leasing) of aircraft”. It would also provide air transport carriers for passengers and freights as well as “supporting services to air transport.

ith the auditors withdrawing their audit report on crisis-hit NSEL’s promoter Financial Technologies, the accounting watchdog ICAI has begun looking into the matter and has sought all available details from the concerned stakeholders. “There are certain provisions in the auditing standards that allow an auditor to withdraw report... “We are looking into it and will gather information from the concerned persons including various regulators and others concerning Financial Technologies India Ltd (FTIL) and NSEL,” Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) President Subodh Kumar Agrawal told PTI. As per the practice, we would give them 20-21 days to submit the information, he added. On Tuesday, FTIL auditor Deloitte Haskins & Sells withdrew its audit report on the company saying the financial statements for 201213 financial year cannot be “relied upon” any “longer” in the wake of NSEL payment crisis. According to sources, the withdrawal came since NSEL’s auditor Mukesh P Shah & Co also withdrew the report. The audited accounts were to be placed for FTIL’s annual shareholder meeting yesterday but the auditor red flagged the financial statements and withdrew its report.

However, Shankar is in no mood to buy this explanation given by the company to ADC. “ I am staying in the same house for the last four decades, and I want my promised money,” he said. Shankar is awaiting a response from the CMD of IDBI Bank till October 10, 2013 and if the response is not satisfactory…”I do not mind even filing criminal complaint at the Police station for breach of trust and cheating under the Indian Penal Code against IDBI Bank and GOI officials attached to the Finance Ministry. MODI BANNED FOR LIFE SPORTS
MUMBAI | THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 26, 2013
I will have the last call: Modi
BCCI takes unanimous decision in SGM
Life ban on Modi was a unanimous decision: Shukla
C NEW DELHI: Banned for life from India's cricket establishment, a beleagured former IPL boss Lalit Modi is not ready to throw in the towel yet and declared that he would indeed have the "last call" in this entire issue. "They (BCCI) will have their day and I will have the last call. I am not going anywhere. I will be right here," Modi told 'Times Now' after BCCI imposed a life ban during a Special General Meeting (SGM) in Chennai. Modi also took a veiled potshot at BCCI's controversial president N Srinivasan accusing BCCI members of protecting the Tamil Nadu strongman. "I think fans are a little disappointed on this match-fixing issue and also the persons involved. It is really sad that they banned the person who created the league but people who are fixing matches and those who are running the Board are being protected by the BCCI members," Modi said. "The issue is very simple to me. The brand itself is bigger than any one person. But my name is married to IPL. I am the architect of IPL. It was a difficult dream but I realized it. I did a few things but I wanted the league to improve. But it's now going in backward direction. Hope BCCI get their act together. I wanted to tighten the rules but at the same time make it transparent," the former IPL czar said from his London residence. Modi feels that it's imperative that one makes all the owners "responsible for running the game" but at the same time said that "BCCI probably doesn't want to lose control". However on the issue of financial irregularities, Modi didn't come up with a concrete answer. "I don't what they are saying. I brought USD 8 billion for BCCI," he claimed. "I tried to protect the interest of BCCI and they accuse me of arm-twisting a franchise! After I left two franchises had to quit the league (Deccan Chargers Hyderabad, Kochi Tuskers). BCCI lost USD 700 million. Since I didn't toe their line, I was accused of financial impropriety," Modi said. Modi didn't stop short while terming Srinivasan as a "Master match-fixer." His family had been supportive during crisis period but the maverick adminstrator declared that he is "ready to move on." "I have moved on and I will soon be associated with a global league. There are a lot of people in sporting fraternity across the world who want me on board."
HENNAI: A pariah in Indian cricket for three years now, former IPL Commissioner Lalit Modi was today slapped with a life ban by the BCCI after its disciplinary committee found him guilty on eight charges of "indiscipline and misconduct". On a day of high drama, which was marked by legal tug of war between Modi and the BCCI, a Special General Meeting of the Board took less than half an hour to unanimously impose a life ban on the controversial 49year-old administrator. "The BCCI, at its Special General Meeting today considered and discussed the report of the Disciplinary Committee of the BCCI on the Show Cause Notices issued to Mr. Lalit Kumar Modi, in accordance with Clause 32 (iv) of the Memorandum of Rules and Regulations," the Board said in a statement. "...Mr. Lalit Modi is guilty of committing acts of serious misconduct and indiscipline, and therefore, in exercise of powers as per Regulation 32 of the Memorandum and Rules and Regulations of the Board, Mr. Lalit Modi be and is hereby expelled from the BCCI. He shall forfeit all his rights and privileges as Administrator. He shall not in future be entitled to hold any position or office, or be admitted in any Committee or any member or associate member of the Board," he added. Modi, the brain behind the highly successful IPL, made a last-ditch effort to avert the impending sanction by writing a letter to the BCCI members requesting them to refrain from any decision till the matter was subjudice. "Not a single member in the meeting supported Modi and the House took a unanimous decision to impose a life ban," a top BCCI official said. The BCCI disciplinary committee, comprising Arun Jaitley, and Jy-
CHENNAI: Former BCCI vice-president Rajiv Shukla said the decision to slap ex IPL chairman Lalit Modi with a life ban was a "unanimous" decision and there was no ambiguity in the verdict by the cricket board. "It was a unanimous decision. It was first moved by Anirudh Chaudhary of Haryana and seconded by Ranjib Biswal of Orissa. Everybody today attended the meeting and voted in favour. There was not a single dissent vote," Shukla said.A pariah in Indian cricket for three years now, Modi was banned for life by the BCCI after its disciplinary committee found him guilty on eight charges of "indiscipline and misconduct". A Special General Meeting of the Board, chaired by president-in-exile N Srinivasan, took less than half an hour to impose the life ban on the controversial 49-year-old administrator. Asked how N Srinivasan could preside over the meeting, Shukla said: "In the last working committe meeting, it was decided that he will discharge his duties as president and that is how he presided today." otiraditya Scindia, submitted a 134page report in July in which it had found Modi guilty on eight charges, including financial irregularities, indiscipline and "actions detrimental to the interest of the BCCI." Today's meeting could take place only after the Delhi High Court vacated a lower court stay order and it turned out to be a brief since all the members had already been submitted the disciplinary committee report. The hearing into the charges against Modi, who is currently based in London claiming a threat to his life in India, started in July 2010 and the
disciplinary committee conducted several hearings over a period of two years, none of which were attended by Modi in person. Modi was suspended under Rule 32(iv) of the Board's constitution on April 25, 2010, seconds after the IPL final held in Mumbai. The Board then slapped three show cause notices on him. He replied to all of them. Modi's decline started after the 2010 IPL bidding which saw the creation of two new teams -- Pune and Kochi. Modi revealed the ownership details of the Kochi franchise on twitter leading to the resignation of the

Parikh challenges MCA ban on employees fighting polls
MUMBAI: After BCCI General Manager Ratnakar Shetty's threat to challenge the Mumbai Cricket Association's decision barring BCCI employees from contesting the biennial elections, BCCI President N Srinivasan's assistant Mayank Parikh has filed a case against the MCA questioning the same in a city court. "I have filed a suit in a city civil court. It is for changing the rules, without getting it into the general body. It could come for hearing by Friday," Parikh told PTI here. The MCA managing committee, at its meeting on July 23, had amended the eligibility rule by debarring anyone who is a paid employee of its parent body BCCI, including the National Cricket Academy, and coaches or employees of various IPL franchises, from contesting the elections. This was widely perceived to have been done to debar Shetty, who is employed with the board as general manager (game development), from contesting the polls.

International Chinglen Sana played a stellar role in guiding Western to an authoritative 4-2 win against Indian Navy in a fast paced and thrilling final of the Mumbai MagiciansMHAL Super League, played at the MHAL Stadium, Churchgate on Wednesday evening. AUSTIN: Justice Department lawyers urged a federal judge not to dismiss the government's fraud lawsuit against Lance Armstrong, arguing the US Postal Service was forever tainted by its sponsorship of his team while he used performance-enhancing drugs to win the Tour de France. Former Armstrong teammate Floyd Landis' first sued Armstrong in 2010 under the False Claims Act, which allows whistle-blowers to get a share of any money recovered based on their disclosures.
