fter three years of court battles and pressure tactics, the SevenHills Hospital, a luxury facility in the western suburbs, ‘unconditionally’ withdrew two petitions and agreed to abide by all conditions, including providing free medicines to civic patients and maintaining 20 per cent reservation for them in its ICU. SevenHills Hospital authorities will be visiting the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) headquarters to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) which has been pending since the last three years owing to a dispute over free medicines to all civic patients. The then President, Pratibha Patil, was invited for the inaugura-

tion by the hospital authorities as part of the pressure tactic employed against civic officials. In early 2002, the BMC planned to make super-specialty hospital in the suburbs, but as it did not have sufficient funds, it settled for a public private partnership (PPP), and in 2005, signed an agreement with

SevenHills. As part of the agreement, the civic body gave away a 17 acre plot of prime land close to the international airport on lease for 60 years, however with some conditions. The SevenHills authorities agreed to all conditions except one – that meant giving 20 per cent of beds to patients referred by civic body in its ICU and to give them medicines at the rates charged by civic hospitals. The SevenHills Hospital authorities refused to allocate the 20 per cent beds as they were reluctant to place poor patients in beds beside the rich ones who would be paying Rs.50,000 per day. Instead, it offered to provide a separate floor for poor patients. There were a couple of high power meetings, but no agreement was reached. The civic body then sent a notice to the hospital in 2011 to vacate the plot owned by it, which was challenged in court by SevenHills. (SevenHills Healthcare Private Ltd's advocate Lara Jesani told the court that she had been instructed by Shankar Krishnamurthy, general manager (corporate communications) to withdraw the petitions.) Mayor Sunil Prabhu said, “They have withdrawn the case, agreeing to our conditions. Soon the MoU would be signed. People of Mumbai will get better medical facilities here.” Additional Municipal Commissioner Manisha Mhaiskar “All’s well that ends well.”

This is a serious issue and needs to be tackled with severity. Strict action should be taken against such nursing homes and doctors. they can’t take any action against these unregistered nursing homes and bogus doctors. Then who is responsible for doing the needful?” questioned Nevrekar. When contacted, Dr. Arun Bamne, Executive Health Officer said, “First of all, the responsibility of taking actions against bogus doctors is with the police and not with the public health department. Secondly, my staff is visiting these nursing homes and checking the certificates and degrees of the doctors. If any degree is found to be suspicious, then we send a copy of the degree to the concerned council for verification. And if the council denies having the doctor registered with them, then we inform the concerned police station who then do the needful.” With regard to the presence of bogus doctors and unregistered nursing homes in GovandiMankhurd areas, a complaint has been registered with the Shivaji Nagar Police Station, informed Nevrekar.

he Saffolalife Study 2013, which was conducted across 12 cities for three years covering people in the age group of 30 to 100, regarding risk factors precipitating heart disease, revealed that more than 70 per cent of 1.86 lakh urban Indian respondents are at a risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Among the 29,017 Mumbaikars who were a part of this study, 72 per cent had a high risk of contracting CVD, 51 per cent had low levels of the heart protective HDL and 44 per cent reported that they consume preserved or processed foods at least twice a week. According to Dr. Akshay Mehta, Senior Cardiologist, Asian Heart Hospital, a sedentary lifestyle, stressful work conditions and a compromised diet are the leading factors in precipitating heart disease which have affected the heart health of people in the 30 to 44 age group. Niti Desai, an independent

health, wellness and fitness professional said, “Our diets have undergone major changes depending on convenience. A preference for processed and preserved food and fried food has gone up noticeably. A high dependence on the same and a menu devoid of vegetables, fruits and whole grains will only make people more vulnerable to CVD.”

SPECIAL REPORT

03

MEET THE POSSIBLES!

The following are the officers in the line-up to succeed to key posts in the Mumbai police.

Mumbai police commissioner ADGP (Highway Safety) Vijay Kamble:

Amidst the talk of government taking back the recently restored powers of the Director General of Police (DGP) to transfer the lower-rung police officers, the prolonged delay in the appointment of the new Mumbai police chief has, perhaps, temporarily postponed the overall transfers of the top brass of city as well as the state police force. ADC looks into possible appointments of officer to be appointed to significant posts in the city. This is based on the reliable sources in Mantralaya who declare that Mumbai’s new police chief will be appointed after the Navratri festival which concludes around mid-October.

Joint Director (CBI, Hyderabad) V V Lakshmi Narayan:

problems in the upcoming 2014 Spl IG (VIP Security) Parambr elections. Singh:

An officer of the 1980 batch, the same batch as the current city’s commissioner Satyapal Singh. The latter’s promotion is already due and if Kamble is appointed now, he would serve the city for more than 18 months, as there will be no other retirements at DG level in the state up to 2015.

ADGP (Establishment) Satish Mathur:

Recently, the officer handed over charge to DIG H Venkatesh, after his repatriation to his cadre state of Maharashtra. An officer of impeccable record, he is very close to state DGP Sanjeev Dayal. The latter has recommended his name for the JCP (Crime) Mumbai. Narayan has been the part of cases looking into major scams of India like the Satyam scam and the probe into Jagan Reddy, to name a few. He takes keen interest in all investigations.

ADGP (ATS) Rakesh Maria:

sioner in 2011. The city has a larger minority population than Mumbai. ADGP (Prisons) Meeran Borwankar:

An officer of the 1981 batch, he is at present the most likely officer to be appointed as the city police chief. Apart from his exemplary skills during his stints in the city at different designations, the main criteria would be tenure. If made commissioner, he would certainly remain in the post for more than 24 months.

ADGP (Thane CP) K P Raghuvanshi: The latter is of 1980 batch, senior to Maria, and has twice headed the state ATS, where he detected several significant blast cases. Unfortunately for Raghuvanshi, he is mired in the controversy over alleged wrongful arrests in the blast case. This might prove to be the biggest hurdle for him, as the ruling Congress-NCP alliance in the state would certainly consider the 2014 elections and wish to avoid the ire of the minority group. However, Raghuvanshi enjoys the strong support of Congress ministers, which became apparent when he was posted as Thane commis-

A straight forward officer, Kamlakar earned his reputation while he was posted as DCP (Crime) in mid 2000. Though he didn’t have as spectacular stints in comparison with Deven Bharti and Parambir Singh, he became known for his creative techniques in solving cases. However, the officer landed in controversy for his alleged role in the Hasina Parker extortion case after which he was shifted from crime branch.

The latter is from the 1981 batch. Ironically, Mathur is younger than Maria, hence he will retire later. He Often referred to as a hands on force became an IPS officer at the age of 21. in the police department, he is regarded as fit for the position of crime branch chief. He had shown his skills by doing exemplary work as DCP (Crime) in Mumbai. In the Spl IG (Law and Order) Deven 1990s, he was instrumental in curbBharti: ing Mumbai’s underworld and the organized extortion syndicates. He was one of the few officers in the Mumbai police department who had raided the gangster-turnedpolitician Arun Gawli’s headquarters at Dagdi Chawl and also survived the political fall-out.

Addl CP (Crime) Niket Kaushik:

Joint Commissioner of Police

Spl IG (Nashik Range) Dhananjay Kamlakar:

An officer of the 1981 batch, Borwankar could be the first lady officer to serve as police chief of Mumbai city. During her posting as joint commissioner (Crime) in Mumbai, she vehemently acted against the organized crime syndicate of Mumbai’s underworld. A section of IPS officers think that Borwankar would not be appointed as Mumbai’s commissioner due to her rigid attitude towards taking orders from senior IPS officers as well as the ministers in power. This would create

The latter is considered as perfect for JCP (Crime), as it was during his stint as Addl CP (crime) that the post got real importance in Mumbai. Otherwise it was considered an administrative posting, which looked after the transfers of middle ranking officer in the crime branch. Bharti, during his stint as Addl CP (Crime), carried out various successful operations and detected several high profile cases.

An officer of impeccable record, Kaushik is the man with less words and more action. In his earlier stint as Addl CP (ACB), Kaushik trapped several government officers for accepting bribes. His style of working has been appreciated by all middle level rank officers of the crime branch. He is referred to as the silent weapon who strikes when needed. He never interferes in the working of middle level officers and gives carteblanche powers to them during probes. At the same time, he takes strict action against officers involved in wrongdoings, for which he is often regarded as a man who can change the face of Mumbai’s crime branch.

Builders have to pay VAT Afternoon Despatch & Courier

MUMBAI | FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 2013

Supreme Court upholds Bombay High Court’s decision on VAT

T

he Supreme Court has upheld the decision by the Bombay High Court accepting the state government's decision to charge builders a 5 per cent Value Added Tax on buildings that were under construction from June 20, 2006 to March 31, 2010. Builders had challenged the state's decision on the grounds that it discriminated between buildings built before and after 2010. As per the state's composition scheme, developers of buildings under construction from 2006 to 2010 should pay VAT at 5 per cent of the Works Contract, which includes the cost of construction and excludes the land value, the amount paid to the subcontractor, service charges, etc. But for buildings under construction from April 2010, builders have to pay VAT of only 1 per cent of the total agreement value. According to Sunil Mantri, Vice President, Naredco & CMD Mantri Realty, imposing 5 per cent VAT under Section 42(3) of MVAT on flat purchasers from June 20, 2006 to Mar 2010 would impact consumers who bought flats during this period, as most of the apartments under construction during that period have been handed over to customers. “We respect the Supreme Court’s verdict, but as the fine print of the

OPTION-1: As per Rule 58 of the Maharashtra Value Added Tax Rules, 2005, the sales price may be determined after deducting from the agreement value; the value of land, labour, charges for planning, designing, architect’s fees, hire charges of machinery etc. The tax is computed on the value arrived as above. The tax computed as above is reduced after considering the tax paid on the purchases of building material (i.e. input tax credit). The tax which can come down to 1.5 per cent to 2 per cent of the sale value, so determined is required to be finally paid.

State leads in implementing e-Governance services By Prashant Hamine

M

aharashtra is the leading state in implementing eGovernance services and the service delivery has now more or less stabilized, stated Director, e-Governance, department of Electronics and Information Technology (DeitY) Gaurav Dwivedi. Addressing a consultation workshop on e-Governance jointly held by central and state government in partnership with NASSCOM and state IT department here yesterday, the national director stated that once the Electronic Delivery of Services Bill is passed in the Parliament, it will become mandatory for all the state governments to deliver all their services electronically in the next five years. Speaking about the future plans he said that a software called Electronic Transaction Aggregation and Analysis Layer (eTaal) links services offered by different state governments and agencies and measures all transactions taking place. Dwivedi disclosed that till now 1,400 services from the central and state governments are connected to e-Taal and more than 90 crore

transactions have taken place since January 1 this year. He added that the focus is now on providing services through mobile devices and reducing the digital divide. Under the single window concept plan national e-Governance Plan (NeGP), one can access most public services close home at an affordable cost. Minister for Revenue, Balasaheb Thorat stated that the state government should try its best to take benefit of the central schemes and funds in the field of IT to benefit more and more people. Minister of State for General Administration, Fauzia Khan stated that each department must deliberate on its individual e-Governance requirements to move in a swift time bound manner to ascertain if speedier and citizen centric facilities are reaching out to the people.

OPTION-2: Rule 58 also provides for the standard deduction at 30 pc. The deduction towards the land value is taken from the total agreement value; the sales price is computed by further taking standard deductions (@ 30 per cent) as provided in the table. The tax is computed after applying the schedule rate of tax on the sales price so arrived. The tax computed as above is reduced after considering the tax paid on the purchases of bldg material (i.e. input tax credit). The tax so determined is required to be finally paid. “Since various deductions are available on the sale value including Land cost MVAT is 1 to 2 pc of the flat cost that is substantially lower as compare to 5 pc under Section 42(3). However the dept has to accept this and pass on the benefits to the public,” feels Mantri. “However, the govt can also propose an Amnesty scheme whereby the consumer pays 1 pc of the flat cost which is the VAT rate on flats purchased after April 1, 2010,” he added.

judgment is not yet available, we will study the same. However, it will be very difficult for builders to recover the VAT amount from the customers and this will lead to numerous disputes between developers and customers,” he added. As per experts, there are two alternate valuation rules available under Rule 58 of MVAT.

The young photojournalist was gangraped by the five accused when she had gone on an assignment to the deserted Shakti Mills compound in central Mumbai on August 22 with a male colleague. The accused had tied up the victim’s male companion with belts before raping her. Last week, the Mumbai Police had filed a chargesheet against the five accused in the gangrape case and said that they were confident of seeking ‘maximum’ punishment for the guilty, based on the strong evidence it has against them. However, during the hearing on Thursday, when Principal Judge Shalini Phansalkar-Joshi asked as to why Sheikh was not produced along with three other accused, Vijay Jadhav, Kasim Bengali and Salim Ansari, SpeContinued from pg 1 « rites over the dead body using a lemon, knife, sword and some items used for black magic rituals, while praying. It is suspected that other gang members may also be present in the city.” “This gang has been active in the Malad area in the past. This time, they were going to target a posh locality, but one of our sources saw them and alerted us. We rushed to the spot at around 4 am and arrested the gang members in a quick move before they could retaliate or attack us,” added Sonawane. “During interrogation, they admitted to having committed other burglaries, and we have recovered knives, ropes, items they use for black magic, swords and many sharp weapons. The confusion ended only after the Swati Sathe, DIG (Prisons) confirmed that he was in Thane jail. The DIG (Prisons) said that there was some confusion when he had to be taken from the Thane jail to the Mumbai court for the hearing in the case. Reacting to this confusion, the court summoned Thane jail Superintendent on Friday for an explanation and adjourned the case. Additional Director General (Prisons) Meeran Borwankar has denied that

It is the responsibility of the college to provide teachers for paper assessment, paper setting and moderation. Only colleges providing all the above mentioned facilities to their students should be considered for a fee hike. When the ADC spoke to Dilip Karande, Member of the Fees Hike Committee, Senator, and Management Council Member, he said, “MU should concentrate on the need to provide quality education, rather than increasing the fees.” Dr. Naresh Chandra, Pro ViceChancellor, MU, when asked about the issue, said, “We have received a memorandum from the senate members. The fee hike committee will go through the given norms and conditions thoroughly and then take a decision over hiking the fees of the degree college courses.” yatin.ingle@afternoondc.in

Dreaded Phase Pardhis are back Vishwanath Salian | ADC

umbai University’s steps to increase the fees of degree college courses has met with opposition from senate members of the varsity. Considering the sudden hike in fees to be unfair to students, the members have opposed the hike and submitted a memorandum to the varsity to consider the important norms and conditions before allowing colleges to hike their fees for various courses. Around 250 protesters of the Yuva Sena protested the fee hike outside Ambedkar Bhavan in the Kalina campus of MU, where the fee hike meeting was being held. The decision to hike the fees has been on since 2007-08. In September 2012, the fee review committee of MU had submitted its proposal to the university after discussing the revision in several meetings. The committee has proposed a hike in tuition fees for unaided colleges in the regular BA, BCom and BSc

and claimed by colleges depending on the facilities and infrastructure provided by the institution. Pradeep Sawant, member of the Fee Hike Committee and Senate Member says, “The sudden hike in fees will be unfair to students. MU has suddenly given colleges the authority to increase their fees – something which needs the approval of the varsity. Colleges can put forth several unnecessary needs and hike the fees which the students will have to bear. To avoid such issues, we senators have submitted a memorandum to the MU for a consideration of the fee hike. The varsity should keep a detailed check of the given norms and conditions and only then consider approving the hike.” According to the memorandum submitted by the senators, as per the Maharashtra Universities Act 1994, a professor in a college should be an approved professor by the government. The non-teaching staff of the college should be paid ac-

It may be recalled that in 1997, members of the Phase Pardhi gang killed two police constables in Malad who had confronted them near a housing society they had just robbed. The constables were attacked with sharp weapons and died on the spot. Later, in 2005, this gang also attacked an Assistant Police Inspector (API) when he tried to stop

them while they were committing a robbery at the Usha Nalanda Housing Society in Evershine Nagar, Malad (West). Last year in August, 12 robbers suspected to be from the Phase Pardhi tribe, broke into two locked flats owned by retired IAS officers in Versova and decamped with booty worth several lakhs.

on April 2012 without being absorbed as a permanent staffer, Vishwas asked that his money be returned. Shinde returned an amount of Rs.25,000 on December 24, 2012, but in January 2013, Shinde and Azmi told him that his money could not be returned and then began avoiding him. During this period, Vishwas learned about 7 other employees who had paid the two around Rs.25 lakh and finally approached the cops. “We have arrested Shinde and Azmi under sections 420 (cheating) and 34 (common intention) of the IPC and they have been remanded to police custody till September 30 by the court,” said senior PI SS Rajput of the Mankhurd police station.

By Tariq Khan he Mankhurd police on Wednesday arrested the president and the founder chairman of a local government-aided Bal Vikas High School for allegedly duping eight of its staff members of a total sum of Rs.26.14 lakh by promising to make them permanent employees. The arrests were made on the basis of a cheating complaint filed by one of the employees, Vishwas Shiudkar (38). In his statement to the police, Vishwas said he had first applied for the position of a teacher on August 5, 2009 and was called for an interview five days later when he met the institute’s president Raghunath Shinde. “Shinde quoted an amount of Rs.5 lakh for offering me the job. When I said I could not generate more than Rs.2 lakh, he agreed to reduce the sum and I gave him the first instalment of Rs. 50,000 the next day at Geeta Bhavan Hotel in Chembur. I was also introduced to Imran Yusuf Azmi, the chairman of the school. I then went to my native place and took a loan of Rs.1.35 lakh from relatives and gave Rs.1 lakh to Shinde in two separate instalments over the next 22 days. OING through my clippings I came across a fascinating story that calls for explanation from the Indian National Congress. The story appeared in The Hindu (Nov. 31, 2012) and it said that the Congress has decided to revive a newspaper run by Associated Journals Ltd. The name of the paper? National Herald. Of course, the paper was originally started by Jawaharlal Nehru in 1938. It was edited by Mr. Chalapati Rao, then one of the most distinguished journalists in India. Jawaharlal Nehru, needless to say, contributed a great deal to it and it used to be said that there were times when Nehru himself wrote some editorials. Understandably it was read pretty widely in Congress circles and, naturally, in official circles as well, as the paper supposedly reflected Congress thinking on any subject under the sun. Financially it was not paying right from the beginning, if rumours are true. But it had a status – a status, of course, not that, for example, of Hindustan Times, The Hindu, The Statesman or The Times of India, or even of the Bombay Chronicle, but as a true spokesmedia of the Congress. It did not, however, last long and people forgot all about it. M.C. (Chalapati Rao, as he was known) also passed away not long after the paper was closed down.

Advani should not hesitate to quit BJP WHAT an amusing sight it was to see the BJP’s PM-in-waiting, NaMo, touching the feet of the party patriarch, Advani, in Bhopal and the latter, turning his face away from the former like the sage Vishwamitra did to the enticing Apsara, Menaka. It was clear as a crystal that the ‘Bhishma Pitamaha’ of the Lotus party was forced to share the dais with the party’s election trump card and to keep on claiming that all is well within the party is the most hypocritical statement of the century. One wonders how such a glaringly sidelined senior leader can give ‘margadarshan’ to his partymen, including NaMo? Anyone in Advani’s position would have called it a day by now and floated his own outfit like so many have done before him — Moopanaar a few years back and C.Rajagopalachari, the first Governor General of free India, long ago. There is nothing left for him in his party anymore and if he values his self-respect, he needs to dissociate himself

AT last, after a decade’s deep slumber, BJP has woken up to its senses! Stating Narendra Modi’s years or more shows that those who govern us do sometimes have the will to act, but more often than not only to protect their own interests. The Supreme Court has corrected an anomaly in the law when it held that there was no reason why elected representative should be protected from disqualification on pending appeal when they are convicted for offences specified in the Representation of the People’s Act. Instead of recognising this and using it as an opportunity to weed out criminal elements, the government has chosen to legislate to overturn the order. The only people who will gain from this move are those not merely accused but convicted of serious offences. Everybody else, and our democracy, will be a loser.

committee who voted against Modi are the same officials who were part of the IPL Governing council reporting to Modi. How come no other official has been held responsible? At least, Modi made such a wonderful product (IPL) and made tons of money for the BCCI. I am not saying he should not be tried for irregularities though. Srinivasan formed a committee to give a clean chit to his son-in-law in the IPL fiasco. The police have given a report otherwise. Now he has ensured that all the committee members vote for a life ban on Modi. Why do they even try to do the job of the police? — Chandrakant Kotian, Vikhroli

elevation as prospective future PM as a victory to BJP will be a wrong estimate. It would be much fairer to state that a resourceful Modi could establish his top position in the party strictly on his merits and terms. Modi is controversial, dictatorial, and a strong champion of Hidutwa, Neverthe-

less, he remains the blue-eyed boy of vibrant Gujarat since a decade. Modi has no dynastic credentials to brag nor has any intellectual accolades to justify his worth to this top national position. Still, over the years he has become virtually a messiah of the masses! Amidst a lot of tumult and controversy over his selection, ultimately Modi ruled the roost! Now, BJP needs him, not the other way round! Needless to say, with an ineffectual and morally compromising government and an uninspiring leader, Modi is the safest bet for the nation. As long as Modi can justify his end, the nation won’t be much bothered about his means!

The Congress is clueless to attend to issues like corruption and inflation et al and solve the problems of the tax-paying people and proper governance is their last priority. On the contrary, providing ‘umbrella’ to the convicted politicians is on the top-priority. The public are eager to know the stand of BJP,in particular, that of Shri. Modi who seems the likely PM candidate going by the mood of the Nation and also due to the fact that there seems to be ‘none’ from the Congress or any other party who could match even half of Modi, not only in allIndia popularity but also in the leadership skills to rule this nation. The Congress is not larger than the nation and, therefore, cannot take so easily to protect the whole lot of convicts when the SC has given an unambiguous directive. Malad road traffic woes MALWANI area of Malad West is very populated and people use autorickshaws, buses etc. to reach railway station. They travel via Marve Road and SV Road to reach the station. However, the roads are choked with traffic in the morning and it takes three hours to reach the station. At the junction, traffic police gives more importance to clearing traffic at SV Road and not Marve Road. Traffic police should clear the traffic on both roads as common people travel for work and become late for office. They face salary cuts because they are late for office. TRIGONOMETRY

∴ √3 = AB 1.5

The word trigonometry is derived from three Greek words – ‘Tri’ means three, ‘gona’ means sides, ‘metron’ means measures. Thus trigonometry means the study of relation between sides and angles of a triangle. It is that branch of mathematics which combines Arithmetic, Algebra and Geometry. It has great importance in the field of navigation, aerospace, engineering and other fields of science. Ex. 3.1(1) In the figure, ∆ZXY is a right angled triangle and ∠ZXY = 900. Write all the trigonometric ratios of ∠Y and ∠Z. Solution: Trigonometric ratios of ∠Y sin Y = Opposite side = ZX Hypotenuse ZY cos Y = Adjacent side = XY Hypotenuse ZY tan Y = Opposite side = ZX Adjacent side XY cot Y = Adjacent side = XY Opposite side ZX sec Y = Hypotenuse = ZY Adjacent side XY cosec Y = Hypotenuse = ZY Opposite side ZX Trigonometric ratios of ∠Z sin Z = XY cos Z = ZY cot Z = ZX sec Z = XY

Problem Set 3 (page 186) (3) If cosec A = 3 √2

find sin A.

Solution: sin A = 1 (cosec A)

Table of the values of trigonometric ratios:

GENERAL MATHS 4 Let us define few terms: a) Line of vision – If the observer is at ‘A’ and is looking at ‘B’ then the line AB is called the line of vision. A

B Line of vision

cosec A = 3 √2 ∴

sin A = 1 x √2 3

sin A = √2 3

Ans. sin A = √2 3 (8) A straight highway leads to the foot of a tower of height 50 m. From the top of the tower, the angle of depression an observer makes with the car is 450. What is the distance of that car from the tower?

b) Angle of Elevation – If A and B are two points such that ‘B’ is at higher level than ‘A’ and AC is the horizontal line through ‘A’ then ∠CAB is the angle of elevation of ‘B’.

Solution: AB represents the tower of height 50 m. C is the position of the car. ∠ACB = ∠DAC = 450 …(Alternate angles) tan ∠ACB = tan 450 = AB BC tan 450 = 1 i.e when you look up it is an angle of elevation.

Activity: How to prepare the table of trigonometric ratios of angles 00, 300, 450, 600, 900. (Refer to text book page 74)

c) Angle of Depression – If A and B are points such that ‘A’ is at higher level than ‘B’ and AM is the horizontal line through A, then ∠MAB is called the angle of depression of B.

∴ BC = 50

Multiple Choice Questions (For Internal Evaluation)

1. Is (sin θ)2 = sin2θ? a) Yes b) No c) NA

Solution: 2 (√2)2 – 1 = 2(2) – 1 =4–1=3

2. sin θ = cos 450. What is the value of θ? 300 b) 450 c)600

Ex. 3.2 (2) Show that LHS = RHS in each of the following: (iv) sin 900 = 2 cos 450 x sin 450

Application of Trigonometric Ratios – An important practical application of trigonometric ratios is to estimate the height of a tower, building, tree, or distance of a ship from the lighthouse etc., without actual measurements. We follow some conventions. The tower, tree, etc. are considered to be perpendicular to the ground level. The distance between the top and the bottom of a tree, tower etc. is considered as height.

∴ 50 = 1 BC

Ans. The distance of the car from the tower is 50 m.

Ex. 3.2 (1) Find the value of each of the following: (iii) 2 sec2 450 – cosec2 900

Solution: LHS = sin 900 = 1 RHS = 2 cos 450 x sin 450 = 2 x 1/√2 x 1/√2 =2 x 1 = 1 2 ∴ LHS = RHS ∴ sin 900 = 2 cos 450 x sin 450

∴ AB = 1 BC

3. The values of which of the following are equal? a) cos 00 & tan 300 b) sec 450 & cosec 600 c) sin 600 & cos 300 i.e when you look down it is an angle of depression. Ex. 3 .3(2) A ladder is placed against a wall such that it just reaches the top of the wall. The foot of the ladder is 1.5 m away from the wall and the ladder is inclined at an angle of 600 with the ground. Find the height of the wall. ocated just ahead of Mt. Carmel Church, Sidewalks of the World surprised me at first glance. For some reason, I was expecting a small and slightly boring home décor store, but this is anything but that! Firstly, the store is huge, with an upper level as well as a basement. Once you enter, you are immediately transported into a chic, fashionably done up space. While the store is vast, what will catch your attention fast are the porcelain figurines that depict people doing various tasks. This range of figures is Sidewalk of the World’s star attraction and they know that, for you’ll find a lot, and we mean a lot of these figurines. From the ground floor and lower level to the upper level, you’ll find these cute, handcrafted figures everywhere. The prices vary — they start at `4,000 for a figure of a boy walking and go up to over a lakh for more intricate figures such as a horsedrawn carriage. Another thing that stands out here is their love for vintage items. They have antique crank telephones (`24,990) that still work, an old wall clock (`3,990) with a decidedly old school charm. Best of all was the bookcase (`79,990) — I loved it because it had patches of peeling paint as well as unpolished wood to give it an authentic, distressed look. If beauty lies in imperfections, this bookcase is the perfect example of that. It is not only the past era that their products have taken inspiration from. We also noticed a dining/conference table (around `1 lakh) that was made of aluminum. Inspect further and you’ll notice that it looks a lot like the wing of a plane. I also loved a set of miniature guitars (`2,490) that would make a great gifting option for a music lover. All of their products are imported from Europe and exclusivity is something they guarantee. Each product is available in just two pieces. However, it is not just imported items that they have here. Their range of cushion covers are designed in-house, taking inspiration from the collection of products they stock. This level also had a working typewriter (`44,990) and a lamp made of an

Nail bail N ail Bar (a part of Juice salon) has launched two new luxury treatments in the manicure and pedicure category — The Exfoliating Manicure/ Pedicure and De-tan Manicure/ Pedicure. I visited their Santacruz branch to try the former treatment. After reaching the salon, you’ll notice that this outlet has a very ‘manly’ décor, with adornments such as bike shaped mirrors, moustaches and wooden yachts dominating the ceiling and brown walls. This outlet was previously just for men, but has recently become unisex. Coming back to my treatment, the Exfoliating Manicure/ Pedicure is specially created with sugar crystals that dissolve easily in water, vitamin E and A, that exfoliate

I was attended by Phiphi (manicurist) and Ashok (pedicurist) — don’t forget to ask for them when you visit for this treatment as they are really good at what they do. After shaping and buffing my nails, Avopex cuticle cream was dabbed on and my hands and my feet were soaked in warm water. After the regular manicure and pedicure process, my hands (up to my elbows) and feet (up to my knees) were rubbed with exfoliating crystals and massaged thoroughly. The massage on my

feet hit the right pressure points and made me a very happy woman by the end of it. The entire treatment lasted 50 minutes. All Juice and Nail Bar outlets use the brand OPI for nail products. When it came to painting my nails, four coats were used — one base coat, two nail polish coats and then a top coat. They told me that the nail polish was dry when I was leaving, but the moment I got into the train, it smudged. This was the only let down of this treatment. I’d suggest that you sit in the salon and let your nails dry for a good 20 minutes at least before stepping out. While the treatment is expensive (`750 for manicure and `800 for pedicure), I think you can treat yourself once in a while just for the brilliant massage.

THE COLOUR OF MONEY Rhea Dhanbhoora’s night at newly opened nightclub Alibii was a haze of light and colour — and it wasn’t the alcohol talking. She tells you more about the swanky new club

ntimidating bouncers line the sides of a red carpet entrance, flanked by vases billowing water-vapour smoke into an inky sky framed by The Gateway of India — Alibii is cushioned in the lap of luxurious South Mumbai. If you walk in and out through the night, you’ll see high-fliers and socialites checking their blow-dries and adjusting their sequined skirts in the long mirrors lining the lobby, while they precariously clink up the steps in skyrocketing heels to enter the 4,000 square foot club. The rupee has fallen and with it, clubbing has taken a swing from yuppie teens to overdressed adults. We’re still searching for the middle ground, but until then, here’s where to spend your weekend. It’s where the rich feel richer and the poor like paupers, but it’s not as snooty as we expected it to be… a plus point. The club is a far cry from the more humble Prive that existed in its place, which saw a tooyoung crowd on most nights. When we visited, they were celebrating Magnum Night where Moët and Chandon champagne bottles were topped with contraptions that spun gold flashing light across the room. The centre is adorned with a chandelier and the dance floor embellished with a DJ stand with flashing crystal tubes dangling around it. Sit down in a private booth, comfortable, but with slightly cheesy themes inspired by

the seven sins: greed, pride, indulge, chill, vanity, lust and passion. The VIP cage rooms have the comfiest sofa’s you will ever sit on, but unless you’re VIP, you’re going to have to elbow past flashy shirts and colourful dresses — the club gets pretty full around 11pm. Before hitting the dance floor, try some of the cocktails at Alibii, priced at `660. Try the lemon tinged Pink Lady, coconut rum infused Malibu Drive and fruity Copacapana. The best drink of the night was the Soco Sour, with Southern Comfort, peach liqueur and sweet and sour mix. The mocktails (`270) are alright, the Dark & Stormy was like an overpriced Kala Khatta and Litchi Blast was run-off-the-mill. If you reach early, are lucky enough to have a private booth or find space to eat, try the Paneer Tikka (`475). The Asparagus Emmental

>> The private booths (left) are set up according to different themes such as Pride (top right). The dancefloor (bottom right) is adorned with flashing, colourful crystal tubes while the long bar (inset) is stocked with pricey liquor Phyllo Rolls (`475) came highly recommended and looked appetising, but the phyllo pastry was chewy and the emmental lackluster. The Lemon Coriander Marinated Chicken Skewers with Spicy Peanut Sauce (`575) were delicious, but you can’t miss their Boston Bay Prawns (`575). The crunchy tailed prawns will leave you licking your lips. Service is better than most clubs and if you ignore the usual suspects, the crowd isn’t so

bad either. If clubbing is your thing, it’s a great place to be; but you’ll have to get past bouncers, reserved tables and `3,000 per couple entry charge first. You’ll also have to shield your eyes from bright neons, poppy pinks, glitter heels and extreme bling — there were times when I wished I had sunglasses to shield my eyes from the glare of opulence. But, at no point will you feel like you don’t belong, because once you’re in — you’re really in.

he first thing you’ll notice about Mamagato is how bright it is. Unlike most Pan-Asian restaurants, the ‘Fun Asian Eating’ restaurant is colourful with a yellow tiger motif and paintings on the walls. The restaurant also has a long bar and semi-private areas enclosed by white wheels and flanked by origami art flowers. The seats, attractive pillows (they sell the pillowcases, in case you’re interested!) and wide tables prepare you for the long haul. First up were pretty looking Vegetable Basil Cups (`220), but they lacked flavour, apart from the sudden, sharp hits of bird’s eye chili. The Indonesian Grilled Chicken (`325) on the other hand was much better. The Mix Vegetable Tempura (`275) again, was a good dish with a mix of carrot, broccoli and sweet potato. The spicy Teriyaki Meal in a Bowl Chicken (`535) heated things up a bit again, quite literally, while the Chicken Shcezwan + Bamboo Shoot (`345) is also a good option. The Chicken Hakka Noodles (`215) are just okay, while the

Spiced Asian BBQ Chicken (`325) was not too spectacular. While most of the other dishes on the menu were just so-so, the Soggy Basil Fried Rice Chicken (`475) was spectacular. Soft hints of basil melded together with flavourful rice and little bits of chicken — we suggest sticking to this for your mains. Dessert was a Caramel Sponge Cake (`190). The caramel was sweet and the toffee sauce was delicious, but don’t order it if you don’t have a big sweet tooth. They also serve cocktails on the weekends and we recommend you try the Zombie (`350) — a delightful mix of dark rum, white rum and pineapple juice. All in all, Mamagato is a nice place. The décor is wonderful, seats are comfortable and service is pretty friendly. Drinks are so good, we’ll consider sitting by the bar itself next time around. The menu does have some stand out dishes, but many are typical Asian dishes packaged really, really well. A fun evening is guaranteed here.

A SLICE OF OUR PAST Filmmaker Shyam Benegal is currently directing a unique, 10-part mini-series which showcases how the Indian constitution was framed. Rohit Pramar talks to the veteran director to find out more about the project >> Shyam Benegal spent almost a year and a half just researching for the show, which he hopes will air next year

MUMBAI | FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 03, 27, 2010 2013

T

he Delhi connection of the Constitution of India — that was argued, articulated and drafted in the nation’s capital — is well-known. The Constitution and the story of how it was drafted, has now shifted to Mumbai for a cinematic avatar. For over a month now, Studio No. 5 at Film City in Goregaon, has become the Central Hall of the Parliament House, where the constitution drafting committee had its debates between 1946 and 1949. The studio has housed a replica of the Central Hall of that period and over 150 actors have gathered there to tell the story of the making of the Indian Constitution for a 10-part mini-series called Samvidhaan, directed by auteur Shyam Benegal and produced by the Rajya Sabha. We caught up with the veteran filmmaker to talk about the series… What made you agree to the project? There was no question of agreement as I wanted to do it. I was a member of Rajya Sabha for six years. We have such a fine constitution. The Constituent Assembly of India, which consisted of about 154 people, sat for two years, eleven months and seventeen days to draft the Constitution. However, the present generation isn’t aware of the various parameters of this marvelous constitution. So, it’s our effort to tell the story of how our founding fathers and mothers fought against all odds to give a democratic shape. It’s very important for the people of India. Did you have to research a lot for the show? Yes, it took almost a year and a half to do the research for the show and to get the details right. However, the set was made in just a month. How has been the experience shooting for it so far? We started shooting on August 15 and so far it’s been enjoyable. We will complete the shoot by the end of November and hopefully it will air next year. I felt it was a good idea to turn this into a series. Do you think it will create awareness among the audience? Certainly, that’s why we are making it! The show is a dramatisation and fictionalisation without losing the facts. The thought behind the project was to make it as entertaining as it will obviously be educative. Do you think it will attract the young audience? It depends on how creative we make it without losing facts or telling lies. We have done our best to do justice to it while also maintaining its historic authenticity and flavour. *The show will star actors like Sachin Khedekar, Dalip Tahil Ramani, Atul Tiwari, Rajendra Gupta, K K Raina, Rajit Kapur, Harish Patel, Anjan Srivastava, Mohit Chauhan, Utkarsh Majumdar, Divya Datta, Ila Arun, Rajeshwari Sachdev and Kennith Desai among others.

We see quite a lot of professional football teams going through the airport for international Champions League and Europa League football matches and once the guys who loaded the bags into the plane got hold of a captain’s arm band of a famous club. Apart from that, I have never experienced any other instances. What is the worst thing about being a baggage handler? The worse thing is loading planes in high temperatures during summer. Because of the tarmac it feels like 50°C, but we still have to work. What’s the best thing? The contact you have with the other staff. At the airport where I work there are a lot of young students, which makes it great fun. Furthermore, it is a good

opportunity to look at the ladies, especially during summer! The most satisfactory part of the job however is making sure that you make the turnaround. I also enjoy working with sophisticated technology, like the aeroplane itself. Baggage handlers love planes. What’s the strangest thing you’ve ever seen someone trying to transport on a plane? The strangest thing was probably a walking stick with a dagger hidden in it. After it was inspected by customs, it was allowed on the plane (in the hold). Sometimes it looks like bags get rough treatment — do handlers ever break stuff on purpose? Yes, sometimes we make a game out of it. In the hold of the plane we throw the suitcases to each other as hard as we can. We don’t want to break the bags or cases, but it is not exactly beneficial to the bag. What tips would you give to travellers to avoid their bags getting lost or damaged? Get a hard shell suitcase with wheels. Don’t use luggage without wheels as it tends to be weaker and vulnerable. Second of all, don’t make your bag too heavy. If a bag is too heavy, the handles will easily break. And last but not least, ‘seal’ your suitcase with a layer of film.

NSE India: CNX Nifty — Daily Market Report for: Friday (September 27, 2013) (Based on the activity of the previous trading day) by Dominic Rebello

REVIEW OF THE PREVIOUS DAY: The Nifty rose marginally on Thursday (September 26, 2013) a net 8.40 points (0.14%) and closed at the 5882 point level. The market opened flat at the 5872 points level. It then turned into a range bound movement until 9.42 a.m. The index then declined sharply into the red and registered the day’s low at the 5864 points level at 9.46 a.m. It then bounced back into the green and turned into a range bound movement until 2.12 p.m. The index then rose sharply and registered the day’s high at the 5917 points level at 2.37 p.m. It then declined sharply to close the day on a flat note. The Nifty witnessed a volatile session and moved in a range of 54 points level. TECHNICAL ANALYSIS: Volume: Volume (Qty shares) increased 12.08%. This change is moderate and indicates a wide participation by investors.

Market Breadth: Overall Market Breadth on the NSE was positive. Amongst all the traded stocks, 711 were gainers, 605 were losers and 71 remained unchanged. Slow Stochastic Indicator: The Slow Stochastic Oscillator has declined in the neutral zone. The Slow K line in the Stochastic Oscillator is below the slow D line (negative if it continues).

RSI Indicator: The RSI is above the 40 level and is now turned flat (positive if it rises). MACD Indicator: The MACD is above zero but is declining (negative if it continues). It is above its 9-day Average (positive).

ADX Indicator & DI Lines: The +DI line is above the –DI line and both lines are flat. No signal here. The ADX is flat while the Market Index is flat. No signal here. Moving Averages (Trend Indicators) The index: Is below its 5-day average (at 5910) Negative. Is above its 15-day average (at 5869) Positive. Is above its 25-day average (at 5687) Positive. Is above its 200-day average (at 5841) Positive.

Resistance Levels The immediate main resistance is at the 6223 points level. The next resistance is at the 6334 points level. Pivot Point Analysis: For intra-day traders the support and resistance levels are calculated according to the pivot point theory and are: Pivot point = 5888 (This is the level where the trend is likely to change during intra-day). Support (1) = 5858. Support (2) = 5834. Resistance (1) = 5912. Resistance (2) = 5942.

OUTLOOK FOR TODAY: On Japanese candlestick patterns the index has formed a third consecutive doji pattern. This indicates that the i ndecisi veness amongst investors continue s. The next candle formation will confirm whether the bias is towards the buy or sell side of the market. The index is still below the 5 days moving average which is declining. This is negative. However, the 15 days moving average has crossed above the 200 days moving average. Further, the index is above the 15, 25 and 200 days moving averages, while the 15 and 25 days movi ng averages are rising. Both these indicate a positive bias. The velocity parameters continue to remain neutrally trended. Incidentally, the index is near its 200 days average which is at the 58 41 points level. This could be a strong suppor t level and there is a possibility that the index c ould reverse from there. However, if it decli nes below it, than it would indicate a change in the primary trend and a fur ther decline could be expected. Investors are advised to hold long positions but with a strict stop loss at the 200-day average.

Work with strict stop losses on all positions

Overall Market Strength/Weakness: The indicators and oscillators discussed here are indicating a strong market but with a neutral bias. Suppor t Levels: For short-term traders the immediate main support is at the 5692 points level. The next support is at the 5561 points level.

As increase in cost of funding; bank has increased its base rate by 25bps in August’13 which will result in 17-18bps rise in yields on advances (as 85% -90% book is floating in nature) which will lead to stable margins in Q2FY14. However, complete pass on of rising cost of funds would be challenge as growth may be impacted negatively. Hence, we believe margins may moderate going ahead from the current 3% levels. Capital constraint for growth: Management has lowered its customer asset growth guidance to 18% - 20% from the earlier 20% - 22% due to lower tier1 capital. Precarious capital position (9% tier 1 capital) coupled with stringent measures by RBI (in terms of liquidity) makes it imperative for the bank to raise capital to augment growth. Starring on MTM losse‘s: With the hardening of yield in recent past, we expect AFS book will result in MTM losses. In the last 4-5 quarters, bank was managing its cost to income ratio with high fee based income and treasury income. However, with the moderation of fee based income couple with expected treasury loss will lead in increase in cost to income ratio. Asset quality expected to remain stable: Management has guided that asset quality expected to remain stable during FY14. However, we have factored rise in credit cost by 40bps in FY14 due to continued slowdown in economy. Valuation and View: Earnings & valuation are expected to remain under pressure due to moderation in margins, expected increase in operating /average assets and expected losses in AFS book. We are not factoring any capital infusion (given lower valuations) into our numbers for now and believe that the customer assets growth at 20% would fall in line with the RoEs. Stock has underperformed its peers in recent past and currently trades at 1.7x/1.4x FY14/15E ABV respectively. We retain HOLD rating with a target price of Rs 460.

Metal price correction along with sharp rupee appreciation is negative - earnings and valuation cut: Indian Rupee had depreciated c.25% vs. US Dollar from mid-June to August end, but it has appreciated over 11% over last two weeks or so. This along with some correction in LME metal prices has led to sharp correction in benchmark Indian prices. This month MCX zinc, lead and silver prices have corrected by 5.8%, 10.7% and 7.9% respectively. We have cut our metal price assumptions and increased our exchange rate assumption which has led marginal cut of c.1% in our earnings estimates. We have also cut our valuation multiple from 5.5x to 5x to account for reversal in metal prices, emerging industry headwinds and lower probability of OFS going through this fiscal. Government stake sale in HZL through OFS may take longer than expected - Investors advised caution: As per last month media reports, legal hurdles were reduced for sale of Government’s residual stake in Hindustan Zinc (29.5%) post favourable opinion from attorney general. Our understanding is that, stake sale may take longer than expected unless mines ministry changes official stance of change in Mines Act. Change in Mines Act requires parliament approval and potentially become a major roadblock, given this would be difficult in run up of parliamentary elections in next 6-7 months. Recent stock rerating has the potential open offer at high price for investors as one of the key triggers. Any disappointing news on this front can risk sell-off in the stock. China Beige Book shows slowdown - despite HSBC PMI showing improvement this week, we think Official PMI Data due in sometime can surprise on negative side: China’s economy slowed in Q3CY13 as growth in manufacturing and transportation weakened in contrast with official signs of an expansion pickup, a private survey showed. Increases in business-investment and real estate revenue also slowed, while service industries picked up, as per the survey from New York based China Beige Book International yesterday. The report is based on responses from 2,000 people from Aug. 12 to Sept. 4 as well as 32 in-depth interviews conducted later in September. The quarterly report, which began last year and is modeled on the U.S. Federal Reserve’s Beige Book business survey, diverges from government figures showing faster factory output gains in July and August. We cut our valuation multiple to 5x (vs. 5.5x earlier) FY14e EV/ EBITDA to account for sharp correction in benchmark global and Indian metal prices, likelihood of softening of macro data from EU, US and China and lower probability of OFS going through this fiscal. Our fair value estimate is cut to Rs 145/share.

Akshay Kumar is one of the big draw stars and films sell on his name and now he has also founded two production companies, one with Ashwini Yardi and the second one with editor journalist of STARDUST magazine, Ashwin Varde, and ‘BOSS’ is their first collaboration together. A few journalists met Akshay in a five-star hotel to know more about his forthcoming film. Some excerpts from his chat with Sandeep Hattangadi

ike his legendary grand-uncle Shammi Kapoor, known for playing rebellious title-roles in yesteryear movies like Junglee, Budtameez, Jaanwar and Bluff-Master, star-actor Ranbir Kapoor seems to be hurtling on the same track. Only recently, the junior Kapoor’s racy dance number Budtameez Dil was among the season’s top chartbusters. Now Ranbir has let his hair down with his latest movie Besharam, directed by Abhinav Kashyap (the mega-hit Dabangg director). This action-comedy movie has already created history of sorts since it has Ranbir’s real-life star parents Neetu and Rishi Kapoor as his co-stars pitted against him. Besides, the vivacious Indo-Australian danseuse-actress Pallavi Sharda plays his screen sweet-heart. Way back in his debut-film

MUMBAI | FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 2013 Reportedly you don’t have a regular hero type of role in ‘Boss’? Yes. Because it is a remake of a Malayalam film and that film didn’t have a regular commercial film hero type of a character who woos the heroine singing songs and romancing her. I don’t have a leading lady opposite me.

What is the story of the film like? It’s basically a story about a father and his two sons played by me and Shiv Pandit. Mithun Chakravarthy plays the father. Danny Denzongpa is the villain in the film. My brother played by Shiv falls in love with Aditi Rao Hydari and then follows a fight between two families with most of the fights picturised on me.

Will they be the usual cable fights? No. The public is too tired seeing such fights. We have 12 sequences which have hand to hand bouts with realistic fights. The public will be thrilled to see such action. How was it shooting like with veterans like Mithun and Danny?

They are so much easygoing and fun loving and look younger than even people in their thirties. In fact Dannysaab has the energy and looks of a 25-yearold. I remember when I was new to the industry I had bought his office and it proved very lucky to me. From your films, it seems you have a father fixation. Yes. I was very close and really admired my father Hari Om Bhatia who is responsible for my success and in Hindi films they generally glorify mothers and sing songs on mothers but fathers are just a part of the furniture. So I tried to make father oriented films like Jaanwaar, Ek Rishta, Waqt, etc. You are mentoring Shiv Pandit? Yes. I liked his work in Shaitaan and he reminded me of myself when I was entering the industry and have signed him for a three-film deal.

What next? I have a film called Holiday coming up and another film with Neeraj Pandey. Akshay is surely the ‘Boss’ of Hindi films!

he beautiful Neha Dhupia has proved her versatility as an actress in the Hindi film industry with critically acclaimed films like , , Local, Phas Gaya Re Obama etc. And with her balancing act of style and substance, the former beauty queen has carved a niche for herself in Bollywood. In the recent past, her conviction and belief in particular roles and films won her accolades while some did not. Neha says, “I never take credit if a film does well (at the box office), and never go into depression if any of my films do badly. I have nothing to do with my films being hits or flops. Apart from the script and director, box office success is also a matter of fate”. Does that mean she is happy with the progress of her acting career so far? I will always be happy. No one is going to take that away from me”, she insists. “Am I satisfied? Not really! I have come a long way, but I think I have a longer way to go. So I am going to hang in there and continue doing good work”. Neha Dhupia is glad that the portrayal of women on the big screen is changing from the homely and simple character to a bolder and stronger one. “It is a great thing that filmmakers have started looking at women characters with a different perspective”, Neha said. She further adds, “It is nice to see that we have some breakthrough directors who are willing to experiment.”

power to, first, get the Federation of Film Societies to enter their film, and then, to park themselves in Los Angeles and lobby for a nomination. It is actually a small miracle that Lagaan managed to get a nomination—films from Iran, Nepal, Bhutan have been nominated in the past, and it is shameful that the largest film producing country in the world (and we never let anyone forget it) only had Mother India and Salaam Bombay competing for the Oscar statuette in all these years that we have been making films. Actually, it is only now that ‘Bollywood’ is making some kind of dent in the international marDeepa Gahlot ket—though still confined to the South Asian population, and not Reiterating some points made ‘crossed over’ fully. spent enough money on Bollywood films for them to be taken seriously, and with Hollywood studios and distribution companies wanting to get into India, Lagaan happened to be in the right place at the right time. Monsoon Wedding’s success in the global market was also an indication of India inching forward, but the selectors did not think it fit to enter this film for the Oscars. But if India was playing to win, would they even send duds like Indian, Jeans and Eklavya? The process of selection that insists on the films being entered by their producers (Dor which had a universal yet Indian subject and fine

aesthetic quality was not entered for consideration) and a Film Federation of India (FFI) jury choosing the entry is faulty. Many regional filmmakers are not even aware of when the entry forms are distributed, and directors have no say in the matter. A panel of advisors should be picked from each region, who will recommend films for a final selection by a central committee, and at least five best films from all regions should be seen before the selection is made. For a foreign audience, all Indian films have to be seen with subtitles, so it does not matter which language it is in, but the dominance of popular films sweeps aside true merit. We think foreigners like song-and-dance or colourful costumes, when their criterion may be something else altogether! The people behind The Lunchbox, behaving like sore losers, could hardly guarantee an Oscar for India. It is a remarkable film by Indian standards, but some of the entries from other countries are spectacular. If the time is right, The Good Road can return with the coveted statuette, if not, Bollywood should be content with its 100 crore hits.

Sources claim that the film, which is produced by Gaurang Doshi, will be directed by adman Prahlad Kakkar and will be based on the anatomy of a marriage. Doshi confirmed the news and added that Aishwarya and Abhishek are ideal for the roles as they are married to each other in real life too. Sonam feels that now since her father is venturing into television with 24, he should join Facebook so that he can interact with more fans. In 24, Anil will be seen essaying the role of counter-terrorism operative Jai Singh Rathod and buzz has it that Sonam might be seen in the second season of the series.

FIR against Ram Leela for inciting communal violence ilmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali is baffled, amused F and exasperated by the court order from Jaipur based on a complaint by a lawyer that Ram Leela hurts religious sentiments and incites enmity between different groups of people on the grounds of religion. The lawyer came to the above conclusion on the basis of the Ram Leela trailer. However, the complainant seems to have read wrong signals in the film’s trailer. Says a source close to SLB, “How can Ram Leela incite enmity on the grounds of religion, when everyone in the film, belongs to the same religious community? Both Ranveer and Deepika are Hindus in Ram Leela and so are all the other characters. There is no character, major or minor, belonging to any other community in Ram Leela.” Incensed by what is seen as an attempt to provoke legal action against major films on the eve of their release, SLB’s team now intends to take stern action against the complainant who has apparently made a false and malicious allegation against Ram Leela. Says a source from SLB’s team, “It has now become the norm to harass filmmakers, producers and writers just weeks before a film’s release. There should be a rule that no cases can be filed against a film just before its release. This would spare filmmakers a lot of nuisance.”

day ago, there had been reports that Subhash Ghai has signed up Sushant Singh Rajput and Sonakshi Sinha to star in his next film, which would be made after Kaanchi. However, it now seems that the reports are false and Ghai issued a statement about it recently. In his statement, the Showman said, “It is not true that we have signed Sushant Singh Rajput with Sonakshi Sinha as per today’s reports in the papers. We wonder who spreads these rumours! We always announce a project when it is completely sealed and signed by all parties concerned.” Sushant will be next seen opposite Katrina Kaif in Abhishek Kapoor‘s Fitoor, whereas Sonakshi will be next seen in Bullett Raja.

Deepika Padukone, who’s become the most successful Bollywood actress of today with her back to back blockbusters, has a new love brewing. Reportedly, Deepika is very fond of filter coffe made at home and loves sipping it especially in the morning. Insiders claim that DeePee, who hails from Bangalore, sources the best filter coffee from her hometown, which has the perfect texture and fragrance. It is an art to make filter coffee in the perfect way and the actress has personally trained her staff to make it in a certain manner. Her coffee has become so popular, that her friends and people who work with her never leave a chance to meet the actress at her home over a cup of coffee.

Irrfan to play a Sikh in Qissa

time in the film. Confirming the news, Khan said that playing a Sikh was quite difficult for him as he has never spoken Punjabi in his life. He added that maintaining the look was also a tough task for him as he was not used to wearing a turban and it was quite difficult for him to wear it all day for the shoot. In the film, Khan will play the role of a Sikh who desires a son and hence, brings up his fourth daughter as a boy.

MI LOOK TO MAKE AMENDS IN DO-OR-DIE BATTLE Afternoon Despatch & Courier www.afternoondc.in

MUMBAI | FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 2013

AIPUR: Jolted by the loss to Rajasthan Royals in their opening match before the second tie was washed out, IPL winners Mumbai Indians would be eager to stamp their authority in a do-or-die battle against Highveld Lions in their Group A game of the Champions League here today. Like Mumbai, the Lions have also lost one match while another got abandoned. Both the teams have just two points from as many outings and in order to keep their chances alive in the tournament, would need to win today's game. The star-studded Mumbai outfit could not have hoped for a worse start. They looked a bit rusty while facing the Royals and since then they had little chance to iron out their flaws. Veteran Sachin Tendulkar, playing his last tournament for the Mumbai Indians, showed some spark with a 15-run cameo against the Royals, which included three fours.

Rasool takes fivefor but West Indies ‘A’ hold edge

Mumbai Indians Sachin Tendulkar with other team mates during a practice session ahead of their CLT20 match against Highveld Lions, in Jaipur on Thursday.

But come today, Mumbai would need more than that from the star batsman. Skipper Rohit Sharma continued to show good form while Kieron Pollard was also impressive with a 36ball 47 down the order. Besides these two, the likes of Dwayne Smith, Dinesh Kartik and Ambati Rayudu have the ability to give any opponent a run for its money. Mumbai's bowling department, in the absence of matchwinning pacer Lasith Malinga, failed to take off against Rajasthan. Pacer Mitchell Johnson, who is expected to fill Malinga's role, went wicketless, while Nathan Coulter-Nile also could not make any impression. India off-spinner Harbhajan Singh looked off-colour, too. But if the bowlers are able to fire in unison they could easily prove to be more than a handful for the Lions who were seen struggling against leg-spinner Pravin Tambe, whose brilliant four for 15 paved the way for Rajasthan's victory Wednesday night.

I knew stump to stump bowling would get me wickets: Tambe J

MYSORE: Promising all-rounder Parveez Rasool impressed with a five-wicket haul but West Indies 'A' held the edge as they made inroads into the India 'A' batting line-up after being all out for 429 in the first unofficial Test here. At stumps on the second day of the match, India 'A' were in a spot of bother at 124 for three, with skipper Chesteshwar Pujara back in the pavilion. The hosts were trailing the Kirk Edwards-led side by 305 runs with seven wickets in hand. Manpreet Juneja was unbeaten on 47 off 77 balls while Harshad Khadiwale was batting on five. Opener Lokesh Rahul made 46 off 100 balls at the Gangothri Glades Cricket Ground. Earlier, Jammu and Kahsmir cricketer Rasool emerged as star of the day by taking five wickets for 116 runs in 45 overs.

SPORTS

AIPUR: Veteran leg-spinner Pravin Tambe, whose superb effort of four for 15 was instrumental in Rajasthan Royals' 30-run win over Highveld Lions, said he used variations and concentrated on bowling wicket to wicket. "It is always pleasing when your team wins. I am happy we did so. Though it is a kind of wicket which suits the pacers but I knew the variations and stump to stump bowling would get wickets," said the 41-year-old spinner. "I used variations in pace while keeping that line and got the wickets. Variations are very important in this type of cricket," he added. Asked whether he hoped to play for Mumbai at the age of 41, Tambe said, "I don't think about my age but only about my game. Even Rajasthan Royals have picked me because of my game and did not look at my age. My job is to perform and I don't think about other things." Tambe, who was just another club cricketer plying his trade in Mumbai Maidans before last edition of IPL, ran through the Lions' middle-order with his fast legbreaks and the bowler felt all the four wickets were important. "I feel all of them were equally important. I like pitches where the ball skids as it helps me bowl my flippers. If there is turn on offer then I am fine with it as that will also help bowl leg breaks. I know my role in this team and I know where to bowl," he said.

SEHWAG SIZZLES IN SHORT BURST BUT DELHI LOSE TO INDIA BLUE INDORE: Virender Sehwag struck a fluent half-century in the first outing of his comeback bid into the national side but that was not good enough to prevent a formidable Delhi side from losing by 18 runs to India Blue in the opening game of NKP Salve Challenger Series here. Playing without skipper Yuvraj Singh, who skipped the tie due to a stiff back, India Blue scored 270 for six in 50 overs courtesy a 73-ball-91 by Mumbai all-rounder Abhishek Nayar. In reply, Sehwag, who came in at number four, batted in his customary style, smashing his way to 58 off only 39 balls with the help of nine boundaries and a six but Delhi could manage only 252 in 47.5 overs. Tambe cleaned up Hardus Viljoen (24) and rival captain Alviro Peterson (40) with fastish deliveries, he mixed it up cleverly getting Jean Symes with one flighted outside off-stump and Sohail Tanvir with a fullish delivery that found plumb in-front. Asked if he knew that he would be included in the playing XI, Tambe said everyone needed to ready all the time to take the field. "I knew our squad is small now and everybody has to be ready all the time. I, too, was ready and knew I may get a chance. I don't think much about life but just want to continue playing," he concluded.

IN BRIEF India U-16 rout Lebanon 4-1 in AFC Qualifiers

KUWAIT CIT Y: India colts produced a clinical performance to rout Lebanon 4-1 in their second encounter of the U-16 AFC Qualifiers at the Sabah Al-Salem Stadium here. Nuruddin (9th minute), Jayananda Singh (43rd), Anirudh Thapa (61st) and Bedashwor Singh (65th) scored for India, while Lebanon could find a solitary goal through Ali Kharoubi in the 58th minute, on Wednesday. Represented by All India Football Federation's Regional Academy boys, India now have four points from two matches and are placed second in their group. The U-16 boys got off to a sensational start when midfielder Nuruddin blasted a longranger from 30 yards in the 9th minute which was beyond Lebanese goalkeeper Mohamad Taha's diving effort. Just before the half time, Jayananda doubled India's lead against a more physical Lebanese side when he tapped Jerry Lalrinzuala's header into the net, going into the break on a high.

Swimmer Pansare’s dope ban period reduced to one year

NEW DELHI: The National Anti-Doping Appeal Panel has reduced the ban period of swimmer Jyotsna Pansare from two years to one in the first decision concerning the 11 Indian athletes who tested positive for prohibited stimulant methylhexaneamine just before the 2010 Commonwealth Games. An anti-doping disciplinary panel of NADA had handed two- year bans to 11 athletes in November last year after their urine sample taken during various events returned positive for methyhexaneamine. All of them had appealed individually to the Anti Doping Appeal Panel and decision concerning 19year-old Pansare was the first one decided by the NADAP.

IPL-style wrestling league put off yet again

NEW DELHI: The rising graph of the country's grapplers seems to be having no positive impact on the proposed Indian Wrestling League (IWL) as it has been postponed once again due to mild response from prospective franchises. IWL, a tournament on the lines of popular cricket extravaganza Indian Premier League (IPL), was announced after impressive showing by Indian grapplers at the 2012 Olympics and was initially scheduled for January-February this year. It was later postponed to November and now the wait is going to get longer. "There is no possibility of having the proposed league this year. We want to hold it on a very big platform including participation from worldclass wrestlers and more prize money. This requires huge investments and we are still working towards it," IWL commissioner and chairman G S Mander told PTI.

Gujrathi, Sethuraman in line for medal

KOCAELI, TURKEY: Indian Grandmasters Vidit Gujrathi and S P Sethuraman placed themselves for a medal contention as they defeated Jorge Cori of Peru and Vladislav Kovalev of Belarus respectively in the 12th and penultimate round of World Juniors Chess Championship here. The victories took Gujrathi and Sethuraman to nine points out of a possible 12 and at least one of them looked poised to get a medal. Yu Yangyi of China almost assured himself of the gold medal by beating Samvel Ter-Sahakyan of Armenia. The Chinese top seed took his tally to a whopping 10.5 points and a draw as white against Gujrathi in the last round will assure him of the title.

RONALDO PENALTY HANDS REAL CONTROVERSIAL WIN M SPORTS

ADRID: A dubious injury time Cristiano Ronaldo penalty was enough to move Real Madrid back to within two points of league leaders Barcelona with a 2-1 win away to Elche. However, the hosts were left furious with referee Cesar Muniz Fernandez as after failing to show Sergio Ramos a second yellow card for a clear bodycheck on Coro in the first-half, he pointed to the spot in the fourth minute of added time when Pepe fell to the ground under pressure from Carlos Sanchez. Ronaldo had put the visitors ahead from a free-kick early in the second-half, but Richmond Boakye thought he had rescued a point when he headed home in the 91st minute before the late drama. And Real boss Carlo Ancelotti admitted that he was far from satisfied with a lacklustre display from his side. "I am not happy, we need to play differently," he told a press conference. "We didn't control the game in the second-half after Ronaldo's goal and it is obvious that I am not happy with the game. The result doesn't suffice, we need to play better. They played well. They were compact and they deserved to equalise because they finished the game very well."

Trevor D’Souza nets hat-trick

MUMBAI: St. Vincent Palotti ‘B’, Marol warded off a spirited challenge from Mother of God ‘B’, Naigaon by pulling off a 3-2 margin of victory in a pulsating first round match of the 26th Willingdon Catholic Gymkhana (WCG) annual Inter-Parish Rink Football Tournament, played under floodlights at the WCG tennis courts. The architect of the Marol team’s victory was their nippy striker Trevor D’Souza. The opportunistic D’Souza was in his elements and scored all the three goals to complete a fine hat-trick. The Naigaon side reduced the margin through Sean Fu and Jason Rodrigues. Later in the evening St. Anthony ‘B’, Malvani struck prime form as they romped to a facile 3-0 win over beat Good Shepherd ‘B’, Andheri. Jason Dias found the target twice and Noel D’Souza struck the other goal for the victors. Results: St. Sebastian, Chembur 3 (Jovito Dmello, Russell D’Souza, Oscar Nunes) beat Our Lady of Health ‘C’, Versova 2 (Steven Rebeiro, Brent Fernandes).

It has been learnt that Walsh is demanding a heftier pay cheque, somewhere in the range of Australian dollar 14,00015,000 per month, for accepting the high-profile job. Nobbs was receiving a monthly salary of Australian dollar 11,000 (approximately Rs 75 lakh) at the time of his resignation. SAI pays the salaries of all foreign coaches and it is bargaining

hard with the 60-year-old, who also coached the Netherlands men's team. SAI will forward the name of the selected candidate to the Sports Ministry for its final approval. Nobbs resigned from his position on health grounds (acute hypertension) in July this year and the post has been lying vacant since then. Hockey India shortlisted four foreign candidates out of the six applications received. Walsh was one of the three Australians in fray apart from two Dutchmen.

Elche had also started the brighter side and Real had goalkeeper Diego Lopez to thank for preventing his side from falling behind for the fourth time in six league matches this season. David Lomban was first to be denied by Lopez as he parried the defender's header from Eduardo Albacar's cross before Carles Gil's low drive was also smothered by the keeper. Javi Marquez also fired wastefully over as the hosts continued to press and they were rightfully infuriated when Fernandez awarded a foul when Ramos chopped down Coro but didn't show the Spanish international the 18th red card of his career. Madrid started the second period with more purpose and were rewarded just six minutes after the restart when Ronaldo's freekick bounced just in front of Manu Herrera and he could only help it on its way into the net. Having gone in front though, Madrid took their foot off the gas and were finally punished in stoppage time when Elche produced their best move of the match to equalise. A long ball from Herrera was headed into the path of Fidel and his cross was expertly nodded home at the near post by Boakye.

Indian eves lose to Korea in Asia Cup semis, WC dream ends

KUALA LUMPUR: Indian eves hopes of earning a berth in next year's World Cup came down crashing after they lost 1-2 to defending champions Korea in the semi-final of the eighth women's Asia Cup hockey tournament here. The Koreans scored two early goals through Cheon Seul Ki (2nd minute) and Cheon Eun Bi Min (9th) to stun the Indians. India tried hard to make a comeback in the second half and pulled through Ritu Rani's goal in the 41st minute, but the Koreans did just enough to hold on to their slender lead. The Indians, who needed to win the Asia Cup to qualify for next year's World Cup to be held at The Hague, Netherlands, will now play China in the bronze medal play-off match today. Korea will play Japan, who defeated China 4-1 in the other semifinal, in the summit clash. Starting as favourites, the Koreans, who had scored 31 goals in their three group matches, went on the offensive from the onset and shocked India by pumping in two goals through penalty corners in the first 10 minutes.
