PUBLIC SECTOR UNDERTAKINGS OPEN DOORS FOR CANDIDATES CLEARING NATIONAL ELIGIBILITY TEST WHICH IS MANDATORY FOR TEACHERS

hile the National Eligibility Test (NET) has become tough thanks to the inclusion of aggregate percentile scores, it has also increased job opportunities. Now, clearing the NET will not only make you eligible to teach, but also enable you to work for Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs). The University Grants Commission (UGC) had declared that the NET scores will now also be considered by the PSUs for job recruitment. The NET is conducted by the UGC to help a person qualify to be a professor and Junior Research Fellow (JRF) in any university or institution in India. The UGC, in its NET examinations conducted in June 2012, suddenly increased the passing percentile, due to which the passing criteria had become tougher. Fortunately, a grand opportunity was presented by

the UGC when it declared that the NET scores will be considered for job recruitment in PSUs. Public Sector Undertakings have already proposed taking the NET scores of candidates into consideration while recruiting. The Indian Oil Corporation has secured permission to consider NET scores for recruitment. The UGC states that this declaration will increase the number of NET candidates. There had been a decline in the last two years. There were 28,824 candidates appearing for NET in December 2012. The number has fallen by around 2,500 candidates this year. Prof D.N. Reddy, member, UGC told the ADC, “With the NET, it will be easy to assess a candidate’s knowledge of subjects and his understanding skills. It is for this reason that employers are giving importance to NET scores during recruitment. Many PSUs are likely to opt for this in the coming days.”

‘Aey Mere Vatan Ke Logon’ revisited

YESTERDAY saw a mammoth gathering at the Mahalaxmi Racecourse to mark 50 years of songstress Lata Mangeshkar's rendition of the famous song, 'Aey Mere Vatan Ke Logon.' Accepting public felicitation, the songstress reminded the audience and Gujarat CM Narendra Modi, who was present and gave a speech on the occasion, of her close proximity to the Nehru-Gandhi family. She disclosed that the song drove the late Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru to tears on January 27, 1963. She also stated his daughter, the late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, had come searching for her in the audience stating that she wanted Lata to meet her two sons, Rajiv and Sanjay, who were her ardent admirers. Lata later donated a cheque of Rs.5,001 for the Shahid Gaurav Samiti. BJP MLA and chief architect of the event, Mangal Prabhat Lodha, in his speech, disclosed that the Rs. 31 lakh raised for organising the event were being donated to the Army Welfare Fund. — Prashant Hamine

MUMBAI | TUESDAY, JANUARY 28, 2014

Our own Rajpath NEXT year for sure, we will rise early in the morning on Republic Day and make sure we have a vantage position on Marine Drive to watch the parade. Friends who did, can’t stop raving about the experience of actually cheering the stupendous display of defensive might, the impeccable rhythm of the marching men from Army, Navy and Air Force, and of course the floats. Plus there was the sheer drama of aerial displays as fighters used the backdrop of sea and sky off Marine Drive for their daredevil ry, and apparently words like dazzling, sensational and unforgettable were freely bandied around. This is the first time the Republic Day Parade has been taken out of landlocked and structure over-ridden Shivaji Park and a good thing too. Thank heavens that the state government for once also overrode the whining by the Mumbai police about how tough it would be to police an open stretch like Marine Drive and that the security implications were

scary. As for mumbling about being unable to go home for days, with all the bad press they have been getting, the boys in khaki should be grateful they have a chance to undo some of the damage their reputations keep suffering as they are accused of falling down on the job in one case after another. The only chap who seems thoroughly satisfied with their performance is the police commissioner, but then, he would be, wouldn’t he? So next year, the police had better gear up to protect at least one more person at Marine Drive. After all, in Mumbai, we get sand, sea, sky and spectacle. Not to mention the absence of New Delhi’s mad winter weather.

In passing...

SINCE we have already discussed the virtues of destinations Antipodean, we shall end on a note that balances out the paeans of praise. In Melbourne during the

REPUBLIC DAY IN MUMBAI 2014: The sea, the sky, the disciplined crowds seated on parapet and verge, marching bands, floats, a perfect display of military might, wonderful weather! What better way to reclaim our Marine Drive and celebrate all at the same time!

horrendous heat wave that saw temperatures read 44 degrees Celsius and the threat of bush fires rising all the time and they raged in the Victorian countryside, we marveled at the poor players

fighting it out in the Rod Laver arena in temperatures that sometimes reached 50 degrees! And we longed more than anything to be back in Mumbai, where smug

reports put the temperature at 10 degrees in Celsius at Vikhroli and asked when we were coming home. In all that time, for Australian papers replete with sports news, it was as if

India did not exist, driving us to news websites to find out what was happening. During that surreal weekend, finally in a single newspaper we managed to spot two pieces

Singapore, in seven and one half hours, you can fit in three movies if you want and ignore the turbulence that makes you sick. We did and saw in the succession three significant films – The Butler, with Oprah Winfrey and Forrest Whitaker , about a black man who served eight presidents in the White House, Blue Jasmine, with Cate Blanchett, about the riches to rags story of a Manhattan socialite for which she is heavily tipped to get an Oscar this year, and finally, Enough Said, a wonderful film starring the late James Gandolfini of The Sopranos fame, and Julia Luis-Dreyfus, who is Elaine in Seinfeld. It is IF for no other reason, all very absorbing and you Indians should go abroad don’t even notice the regularly just to remind turbulence that is making the themselves that there is cabin crew yell at passengers another world out there who pop up to go to the toilet where things actually work, when the seatbelt sign is on. there is no pushing and From Singapore to shoving, what you see is Mumbai it was Jet Airways, what you get, and you can and very happy we were to stop looking at everyone with be almost home too. think it was something like one of the Fast and Furious movies. Needless to say, we preferred a nap.

Coolly koli

DIFFICULT to imagine that the Koli Sea Food Festival at Versova, held usually in the three days that end Republic Day, is just eight years old. Difficult, we say, because it has so swiftly degenerated into the awful, commercial scrum that is is today, with rice rotis costing Rs 50 per piece, and a smallish piece of pomfret setting you back around Rs 300. Why on earth would anyone want to inflict such unreality on oneself? It may be true that there is a definite buzz in the maidan where the annual event is held, but how excited can one get at the sight of hundreds of koli women dressed to the nines as they serve paying customers? And boy, the customers pay through their noses for the doubtful privilege. But the buzz is more than offset by the million decibels of sound on the stage where performances go on till midnight to enhance the ambience, dust lies thick in the air, and the approach roads, through nightmarish

of India news. One was a very short article on the death of poor Sunanda Tharoor. The other was an even smaller piece on some sporting event in Kolkata. It looked like even the media there was suffering from heat stroke. If for no other reason, we recommend that after a sojourn abroad, made preferably in the legal manner and not as a boat person or in a container, you come back home to check out our own papers. Heaven! And there’s plenty on Australia too!

DIARY

WOW: For staffer Rajan Ranshoor, it was a serendipitous moment at the fabulous Umbrella falls at Bhandardara in Ahmednagar district, less than 200 km from Mumbai. He was there last week, expecting little, for the falls are a roaring cascade only during the monsoons. Then the locals told him that he had better hurry, the water had started trickling down and it was a sight not to be missed. By 4 pm he had made it and what a sight it was! It seems that the water is released from the Wilson Dam built on the Pravara River at stipulated times and for a while, as the foaming cascade falls to the gardens below,it is as if the monsoon is back. So no need to postpone your visit. Just time it!

Yari Road, are an exercise in lousy planning and patience. To think that residents were so excited when the event started less than a decade ago. Fewer stalls, fewer footfalls and good food. We remember that you

could have a boat ride with a fish thali thrown in for Rs 150! And it’s not even that the kolis are passing the benefit of inflation as an excuse, down the line. Word has it that they try to outsource the

roti making, but at Rs 12 a pop, making sure than profits remain more or less in their own hands. And to top it all, by Day 3, if you live around the place, the smell of frying fish is a definite turnoff.

RTO inspectors allow under-quoting by truckers, with each of the 22 check posts running a loss of about Rs.2.80 crore per day

By Philip Varghese

n an interesting expose, the Consumer Protection Service Council, a Thanebased NGO has claimed that the state government has been incurring a loss of Rs.25000 crore every year through overweight trucks paying bribes at toll nakas in the state so as to get away with low octroi duties. This was revealed in a press conference held by the council in Thane on Monday where Ganesh Gopal Joshi, Nation President of the coun-

the other hand, the Hadakhed check post facility, currently operational in Maharashtra, is a disaster. It is a small shed on the siding of the main highway. Trucks entering Maharashtra from Madhya Pradesh take a left turn from the highway and approach the shed like structure. There is no weigh bridge over there to determine the weight of the truckload,” Joshi said. Dayanand Nene said, “The RTO inspectors manning these posts allow overloaded vehicles to pass and a lot of money

cil and Dayanand Nene, National Secretary of the council, briefed those present on the survey results from different locations, including Dhule and Thane. “There are 22 check posts in Maharashtra, We started with our investigation from the Hadakhed check post in Dhule district. Our investigation took us to the MP border check post at Sendhwa. What we saw there was a fully computerized, state-of-the-art modern check post which had 18 bays (9 on each side) and automated weigh bridges to cater to the 7,000 trucks passing to and fro. The system there runs remarkably smoothly. The trucks queue up, drive up the bay, submit documents and the clerk at the counter window then feed the information into the computer. Once the data is fed in, the system generates all information and analyses the weight - net/gross - and generates the payment challan in minutes. This way, there is minimal chance of corruption. The MP check post is supposed to be a model in India and other state governments are eager to start it in their states. On

allegedly exchanges hands. Otherwise overloaded trucks cannot enter into the city. After the apex court ruling, the Maharashtra government came out with a notification on February 4, 2006 directing all the RTOs to impose fine on overloading. It also prescribed downloading of excess goods after weighing such vehicles at nearest weigh bridges. However, nowhere in the state is this procedure scrupulously followed. As per rules, there is a provision for a fine on the transporter and driver of Rs.2,000 on the first overloaded tonne. It's subsequently followed by Rs.1,000 per tonne on the remaining overload. Vehicles violating the norms are supposed to be challaned and failure to pay fine also invites legal action. 'The state is losing revenue worth crores as many overloaded vehicles are let off without being fined. The following annexures reveal shocking figure that the state is losing revenue of approximately Rs.2.80 crore per day, a loss of Rs.1,022 crore per anum at the Hadakhed check post itself. And remember there are 22

check posts in Maharashtra. We have submitted a petition to the Chief Minister and a!so State Transport Minister Sachin Ahir and demanded

that a thorough inquiry should be done in the functioning of the RTOs in the State, an officer should not be allowed to remain in one

posting for more than 3 years, the 132 RTO inspectors in the state be immediately reshuffled and all RTO posts be under CCTV surveillance and

connected to the States Central server. We have submitted a list of 11 corrupt officers in our petition and demanded their investigation.”

The arrested accused have been identified as Mukhtaar Khalliuddin Khan alias Samir (28), who is the prime suspect, Maksood Ahmad

She then called Khan, who asked her to meet him in the Behram Nagar area in Bandra (East). “The victim then came from Kalwa to Bandra and met Khan who asked her to accompany him to a room in the locality, where he allegedly raped her at knife point. vided the room to Khan for committing the crime, kept watch at the door,” said senior police inspector Ashok Borse of the Nirmal Nagar police station. “The victim alleged that she was scared to lodge a complaint as the accused had threatened to kill her, but on Sunday she approached the police and lodged a case against them. We have arrested three persons in the case and investigation is on,” said Borse. The trio has been arrested under section 376 (rape), 506 (2) (threatening with dire consequences) and 34 (common intention) of Indian Penal Code.

uthorities at Reliance Infrastructure are having a hard time with politicians indulging in finger wagging at them. First it was the turn of Congress MP Sanjay Nirupam who staged a dharna outside RInfra office in Kandivali wanting the private power utility to reduce power tariffs. Then there was Republican Party of India (Athawale) faction leader Deepak Nikhalje who wanted MMOPL to name the first station on the ChemburWadala Mono Rail after Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. Now, cadres of Raj Thackeray’s MNS are on a spree of smashing toll plaza’s across the state. No amount of explanation from RInfra to Nirupam that it was the prerogative of the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) to determine the tariff rates,

failed to move the Congress MP. The private power utility also tried to tell him that it was the government which was empowered to grant subsidy. Nirupam’s supporters even staged a agitation in front of Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan at the airport upon his arrival from Davos. If that was not enough, Nikhalje jumped in the fray demanding that the Chembur station on the Mono Rail corridor between Chembur and Wadala should be named after Dr. Ambed-

kar. However, he made this demand to Mumbai Metro One Pvt. Ltd. (MMOPL) instead of making it to the state government or the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). The latest one to have forgotten his own brief is Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray whose cadres are now running riot smashing toll plazas across the state. All this despite the fact that it was the MNS which had first

moved the Bombay High Court with its plea on toll plazas in the state. The issue was later picked up by all party groups in Kolhapur where toll plazas were set on fire. Yesterday too, MNS MLA Praveen Darekar courted arrest at Dahisar toll naka as MNS cadres tried to ransack the toll plaza. Similar incidents of ransacking of toll plazas by MNS cadres all across the state have been reported with many party cadres being rounded up by the police.

eader of opposition in legislative council Vinod Tawde yesterday, in a letter addressed to Governor K. Shankarnarayanan has urged him to intervene as the government has decided to bar the legislators from using legislative devices like starred questions, calling attention notices, etc. citing reasons of model code of conduct for ensuing Lok Sabha elections. He said that the government has drawn up plans to hold a truncated legislature session of just four days from February 24 and pass the vote on account. He said that in the past on the eve of 2004 and 2009 Lok Sabha elections the government had similarly curtailed the session of the state legislature. However, then the model code of conduct was enforced. During the 2004 session the legislators were allowed to use the legislative devices at their disposal. Tawde stated that now the model code of conduct is still not enforced and is likely to be enforced in the first week

Congress president Manikrao Thakre and Congress ministers in the state cabinet among others were present when both Deora and Dalwai filed their nomination papers. The Rajya Sabha election is scheduled for February 7 and so far, Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar, eminent lawyer Majid Memon (both NCP), Rajkumar Dhoot (Shiv Sena) and Sanjay Kakade (Independent) have filed their nomination pa-

pers. The elections are being held for seven seats from the state and 287 elected members of the Legislative Assembly form the electoral college. Meanwhile, the BJP has decided to field Republican Party of India (RPI) leader Ramdas Athavale for this election. The formal announcement regarding this was made yesterday in New Delhi. Athavale is likely to file his nomination on Tuesday. Significantly, the news is doing the round that former

chief minister and Shiv Sena leader Manohar Joshi is likely to enter the arena. Whether Sena will support his candidature or Joshi will contest as an independent is still not clear.

Vinod Tawde, BJP of March. He pointed out to the Governor that the four day session of the state legislature will not be held during the period of the model code of conduct. Tawde argued that the legislature was the supreme and constitutional body and that it was the constitutional right of the legislators to use the legislative devices at their disposal to raise issues of public importance in the legislature. He added that the Election Commission of India has nowhere stated that after enforcement of the model code of conduct the legislators cannot use the legislative devises at their disposal.

Ponder awhile... “Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power.” – Abraham Lincoln

Power, not war against corruption, is AAP agenda T

HE Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders claim they are waging a war against corruption. AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal says he has a long way to go to end corruption, but he has made a beginning. Arvind Kejriwal joined Anna Hazare who had undertaken a fast in Delhi to force the government to pass the Jan Lokpal Bill. Anna's agitation was quite successful. The government finally changed Anna's Lokpal and passed its own version of Lokpal. Arvind Kejriwal called it a 'jokepal.' Arvind Kejriwal entered politics and when he saw a chance of capturing power in Delhi, he made a hectic effort, adopted the broom as a symbol – which would sweep away corruption. Arvind Kejriwal has claimed he is not interested in capturing power. Also, his party leaders have made the same claim. They are not interested in power but their fight was only to end corruption and help people to come into their own. That their claim is baseless is seen from the fact that some leaders of the party openly revealing that their fight is only for power. Arvind Kejriwal has expelled Vinod Kumar Binny from the party. It is clear as daylight that Binny is fighting for power and position. He calls Kejriwal a dictator. Two other leaders of the party are at loggerheads with Arvind Kejriwal. They have also revolted against the 'dictator' and revealed that corruption fight is not in their agenda at all. There is hardly any difference between them and leaders in other political parties. They are all after power!

EITHER Ram Jethmalani nor P. Chidambaram requires any introduction. One is a former law minister and a sitting member of the Rajya Sabha besides being one of the top-most lawyers of the country. The other is the Finance Minister of India and a leading member of the Supreme Court Bar. The two have exchanged letters in recent weeks. Without vouching for the correctness of charges and counter-charges revealed in the exchanges, we reproduce here the unedited letters in larger public interest: Jethmalani opened the round with his letter to Chidambaram on 6th December: ‘I write this not as an advocate to a client’s adversary but as a member of parliament. I have been approached as senior counsel to advise two Delhi advocates on behalf of a client and his friend a prominent politician in opposition. I need not discuss their names. I know them all. The client amongst them is one for whom I have appeared in a court matter.

HEY both want legal and political action. The former invokes action under the criminal justice system. If their statement of case given to me is accurate, it does make a strong prima facie case. However, as a criminal lawyer of experience, I do realize that seemingly open and shut cases have also failed the strict proof beyond doubt. I will not take it amiss if you ignore this letter and the annexure altogether. I have done my duty. The documents placed before me are enormous. I am shocked to absorb their implications. That should worry you too. I summarize them for you. 1) S K Srivastva, an honest income tax officer, was investigating tax frauds of NDTV. These frauds are based on ‘step-up coupon’ funds of the value of GBP 300 million that was surreptitiously introduced in the garb of fictitious jama-kharch entries in the name of bogus name-lenders. 2) NDTV has floated 21 bogus subsidiaries all over the world through which illicit black money was laundered by it through dubious means and routes. The main one here is the London subsidiary. 3) The black money in question belongs to you and your son. 4) NDTV has been called upon to disclose the identity of the owner of these illicit monies. They have declined to do so and are ready instead to risk paying tax due on this amount as their concealed income. This is being done to aid you and your son in escaping the consequences of this fraud on the nation. Alleges benami investment in TV channel 5) With the criminal object of suppressing the ongoing investigation you took several steps to immobilize S. K. Srivastva, the additional I-T commissioner in charge of this investigation. Inter alia you managed his suspension on the false charge of sexual harassment of two lady officers of 1999 batch in the department, who participated in the same for extraneous considerations and with oblique motives. These charges were proved false in judicial proceedings. These two ladies did not support the allegations. They refused to be crossexamined and the court (Ld. CAT, Principal Bench, Delhi) was finally informed that the ladies have not complained and no report of any kind about this charge exists which can be produced for inspection which the officer was entitled to and which has been ordered by the honorable court. You called the superior officer of Srivastava and tried to persuade him to make adverse reports against him but he firmly refused. You had planned his dismissal but you finally yielded to the call of some honest officers

who refused to become conspirators. It is sad that as a result of his humiliation of suspension on false charges of sexual harassment client attempted to overcome his grief and anguish by making some observation about personal lives of two ladies, which though factually correct was a tad in poor taste. On the medical opinion of some doctors, this otherwise intelligent and honest man was adjudged insane by the High Court, a finding which ultimately could not be sustained in consequence of action by the Medical Council of India. I am not getting into this inhuman handling of Srivastava. 6) The officer Srivastava was actively investigating your part in the money laundering conspiracy was clear from the first 12 pages

irrefutable evidence that the files of the government have been fabricated to your knowledge and with your approval to suppress the allegation that you have received bribe of Rs.5,000 crores which has been laundered by NDTV. All this clearly lead to the inference that the laundered monies belong to you. 8) Serious criminal offences are prima facie made out which call for immediate investigation and trials of offenders. I am sending you the documents on which the above conclusions are based. In your own interest I advise you to carefully scrutinize them. I am only trying to be fair and transparent. Brief note of factual details in enclosed as Annexure to this letter.

MUMBAI | TUESDAY, JANUARY 28, 2014

President Mukherjee’s words of wisdom AFTER a long time, we now have a President, Pranab Mukherjee, who combines in himself an enormous political wisdom and tremendous administrative experience to be fully capable of presiding over the destiny of our great country — among his predecessors, only Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan can be said to come close to him in stature but he was more of a philosopher than anything else. The President’s address to the nation on the eve of our Republic Day was par excellence and drew rare appreciation even from the main opposition party, the BJP. His clarion call to all the political parties “to perform or perish” is a sound dictum, fashioned after a similar warning that is normally handed out to academicians: “publish or perish” and needs to be taken seriously by all the political outfits. He was also quite forthright in pointing out that “anarchy cannot be a substitute for decmoracy” and that governments are not houses of charity to promise the Moon to the public.

tional anthem, singing patriotic songs and organising cultural events. On this day, we should also remember the sacrifices made by our various freedom fighters who bravely fought for our country’s Independence and pay our due respect to them. But it’s a pity that after every Independence Day and Republic Day celebrations, the country’s national flag is strewn on the streets and people irrespective of caste, creed, colour or religion blithely walk over them. Even when the national anthem is played on the radio or telecast on television, people don’t respect it by standing to attention and singing it. They are busy talking on their mobile phones or chatting with their friends. SP: True secular party

Bengal’s ‘lotus’ gone!

IF somebody asks me the question as to which is the truly “secular” party in India, my finger will unflinchingly point towards the Samajwadi Party. This “fact” has been proved time and again. The latest “feather” in the cap of this Party is the decision of its govt in UP to withdraw all the cases against Muslims allegedly involved in the recent riots in Muzaffarnagar. Earlier also, in the same case, the devoutly “secular” administration in Lucknow had announced compensation only to the Muslim victims of the riots. Therefore, the only inference I can draw from these two incidences is: in the riots, Hindus did not suffer at all, and they were the “culprits’ who started the communal disturbances.

BENGALI star Suchitra Sen (nee Rama Dasgupta) who died on the morning of Saturday last was not born out of beauty pageant/contest nor of any glamour quotient :she was just a naturally grown lotus flower that we see in ‘numerous’ ponds of Bengal! Amitabh’s noble act

Superb presence of mind

AT the outset Amitabh Bachchan needs to be high commended for having being honoured wih the Life Time Achievement Award by Screen for his contribution to Indian Cinema. He also needs to be eloquently commended for making India polio free country through his national broadcast and ad campaign or the eradication of the dreaded Poliomyeatis as the grand Ambassador of UNICEF. If no exaggeration, Bachchan only could have done it. In fact the brands that he endorses are all making a big difference. That’s the charisma of Amitabh Bachchan and why he is the only persona in the B-town to be so widely recognised in the entire universe. The film fraternity should feel proud to have a phenomenon in Amitabh Bachchan. Through his successful polio eradication campaign he has set an example for other actors to wake up for a noble cause.

Set to chase a mammoth 315 runs India at one stage looked inching closer with 62 required of 7 overs and Ashwin and Jadeja playing sensible cricket. Guptill’s efforts not just broke the threatening partnership but made the asking more difficult for the visitors. A couple of more wickets and India required 18 of the last over. Major goof-up at Mumbai Marathon MUMBAI Marathon on January 19 saw a spate of health problems among runners as 3,000 people were injured, some with dehydration, others with heart ailments. One among the three runners who had a cardiac arrest was my friend Amit Kasat a senior executive at Standard Chartered Equities who was admitted to Bombay Hospital in a critical condition and is now battling for his life there. I was shocked to learn that there were no proper shock therapy equipments nor appropriate injections in the cardiac ambulance to revive their heart and their hearts were revived at the hospital after much time was lost. Learnt from the ambulance team that they only could give some heart massage and nothing more as the ambulance was not properly equipped for such a tragedy.

hysical health, mental health and even spiritual health‌ these are topics that are well-covered and which we all are comfortable talking about. But, the taboo associated with sex means that there are a number of people who are hesitant to talk about sex with their own partners, forget their doctors or children! This is a disturbing tendency because being aware about sexual health and how it can affect your life is really important if you want to lead an overall healthy and satisfying life. Sexual health can have consequences on your overall well-being, both physical and mental. Many STDs (Sexually Transmitted Diseases) can leave you in unbearable physical pain. On the flipside, not being able to talk about the problems you might be facing sexually can end up affecting your emotions, thus harming your mental health. Furthermore, having misconceptions (we are going to talk about a few in this article) about sexual health can lead to you indulging in potentially dangerous practices that are going to harm you in the long run. This is why you need to pay attention to your sexual health. Being able to recognise the symptoms of STDs, practicing safe sex and being knowledgeable about sex and health is necessary to ensure healthy and fulfilling relationships, unwanted pregnancies and preventing illnesses; all which affects your overall well-being in more ways than one. In this article we are going to talk about the various facets of sexual health — the common STDs, misconceptions and myths surround sexual health, diet and fitness tips for a good sex life and tips on practicing safe sex.

And not just HIV; visit a doctor to know about the different conditions you should get tested for (our list below should be of some help). In most cases — delay in diagnoses is one of the reasons diseases reach unmanageable levels. With advancement in medical technology, an early diagnosis often leads to faster and easier cure.

From unwanted pregnancies to helping protect against STDs, condoms are important. So is the way you put them on! Do so improperly and you’re at a chance of both. Refer to the leaflet that comes along. Also never mix lubricants with condoms as they damage the condoms and there’s a higher chance of them tearing. Use water based lubricants if needed.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is an STD which can sometimes go on to cause cervical cancer. The good news is that vaccines for this condition are now available. But, since the vaccine against this condition is quite new, the jury is still out on its effectiveness.

Experimenting with different positions is one of the best ways to maintain a healthy relationship and keep the spark in your relationship alive. But, if you aren’t sure about what you are doing, you can end up injuring or harming either yourself or your partner. One of the best tips to follow is to stop when there’s any kind of discomfort. Work it out

>> The different poses of yoga — especially the ones mimicking a warrior pose — have a great positive impact on your sex life

Believe it or not, the exercises you do on a regular basis also have an impact on your performance. We bring you a mix of workouts and exercises to boost your sex life. yoga: Yoga has some sequences that incorporate warrior poses and lunges, which help strengthen your pelvic muscles over time and intensify your orgasms. cardio: Cardio increases and improves the blood flow to the organs in your body, so rest assured that exercising will increase blood flow to your genitals and boost your libido. Pilates: It is great that you want to get experimental, but you need a lot of flexibility and core strength to pull it off. Pilates works on both areas and also increases the strength of your back and hips to help you support your own body weight better.

Myths about sexuaL heaLth

Since talking about sex isn’t really encouraged, we usually end up depending on our friends or the internet for information. But, this can result in you believing in things that aren’t true at all. Here we tell you about some of the most common myths associated with sexual health. you can’t get pregnant during your period: Surprise, surprise! Many people think that having sex during a period is the best way to prevent pregnancies. However, some women have long periods which overlap with their ovulating cycle. This means that even though they’re menstruating, they’re still fertile. It’s unlikely, but still possible. So, don’t skip using contraception. toilet seats spread stDs: While it’s good hygiene to spread tissue on a public toilet seat before using it, don’t do so believing that you’ll catch an STD if you don’t. STD viruses can’t live outside your body for a long period of time and most of all, urine doesn’t have any STD viruses (they are found in blood). the morning-after pill is an effective contraceptive: There’s a reason why these pills are advertised as emergency contraceptives. They might be effective, but they certainly aren’t something you can go around popping every time you have sex. In the long run they can cause major hormonal imbalances in your system. So, it is only when you suspect the contraceptive measures you took while having sex weren’t effective should you use these pills. Also, keep in mind that they only protect against pregnancies and not STDs. Douching cleans the vagina: We don’t exactly know where this originated from, but there’s a belief that cleaning your vagina with water or other fluids (by squirting the fluids inside) is a way to clean your vagina and keep it healthy. However, douching has the opposite effect! From harming the healthy bacteria in your vagina to changing the acidity balance — douching does nothing but harm you. Avoid this practice at all costs.

Pelvic tilts: A lot of people suffer from lower back pain which can ruin your sex life. Practising pelvic tilts strengthens the back and pelvic region and also the muscles you use most while having sex. Lie on your back with your knees bent and feet flat on the floor, shoulder-width apart. Slowly, raise your pelvic region straight up. Hold the position and be sure to tighten your abdominal muscles and try pushing your thighs together. Then, slowly lower your pelvis to the floor and repeat this exercise 20-25 times. Leg extensions: Don’t forget to tone your thighs. Being a large muscle group, it is very easy for the thighs to tire out quickly and leg extensions will help build these muscles. The best part is that they are so easy to do, that you can do them almost anywhere. Sit on a chair with your back straight, thighs parallel to the floor and knees at a 90º angle. While keeping your thigh and knee as steady as possible, raise one foot, straighten your leg completely and then bring it back to the floor. Do three sets of 10 repetitions for each leg.

the Most coMMon stDs After talking about the baseless myths that shroud sex, it is important to know about Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) that you are susceptible to. While it may seem like something that will never happen to you, studies suggest that one in every two people who are sexually active get an STD by the age of 25. So, take a look at the most common STDs in our all-you-need-toknow guide. If you spot any symptoms, we suggest you visit a doctor immediately.

herPes What it is: Herpes is a viral infection that affects your genitals and sometimes, your lips and area around your mouth as well. Frequency: One in six people suffer from it. In rare cases, it can be passed down from mother to child. Symptoms: Herpes causes cold sores and fever blisters in the mouth and lips area and/ or in the genital area. Prevention: There is no vaccine for this. The only way to prevent it is to abstain from sex and use a condom as it reduces the risk of contracting the disease. Having said that, it is possible to catch herpes in areas not covered by a condom.

syPhiLis What it is: It is a bacterial infection that can spread throughout the body. Frequency: About 40,000 new cases are reported each year. How it happens: Syphilis spreads through vaginal, oral or anal sex and through kissing, if there is a sore on the mouth. Symptoms: In the first stage, it usually takes the form of a single sore on the mouth, genitals or anus. The other

Watch What you eat!

Not many people know that what you eat has a direct impact on your sex life and while certain foods boost it, others are actually detrimental for your sex drive. Take a look at our list of the best and worst foods. the best foods for your sexual health Watermelon: This fruit is not only low in calories but also boosts your libido as it contains phytonutrients. Texas A&M Research conducted a study in 2008 that revealed that lycopene, citrulline and beta-carotene in watermelons help relax your blood vessels and naturally enhance your sex drive. Sesame & Oysters: Both these foods are high in zinc that helps testosterone and sperm production in men. While you may not eat oysters that often, we say you get your daily dose of sesame for improved sexual health. Almonds: They increase your memory and now, also help improve your sexual health and reproductive capabilities. Almonds contain zinc, selenium and Vitamin E. Selenium helps with infertility and zinc gives your libido a boost. Almonds also improve blood flow in your body and your sex life could only benefit from an increased blood flow to your sex organs.

>> If you have even the slightest doubt that you might suffering from an STD, visit a doctor symptoms may appear much after the first sore has formed and disappeared. Generally, around six months after the sore, there is a rash that develops. Prevention: There is no vaccine for syphilis. The only way to prevent it is to abstain from sex and use a condom as it reduces the risk of contracting the disease.

Gonorrhea What it is: It is a bacterial infection affecting the throat, anus or genitals. Frequency: This disease is mostly found in women from the age of 15-24 and in men who are 20-24 years old. How it happens: Gonorrhea spreads through vaginal, oral or anal sex. It can also be passed down during childbirth. Symptoms: Most people see no symptoms. However, infected persons do suffer from a burning sensation while urinating, white/ green/ yellow-ish vaginal or penile discharge. Women may also experience

bleeding and pelvic pain. Prevention: There is no vaccine for gonorrhea. The only way to prevent it is to abstain from sex and use a condom as it reduces the risk of contracting the disease.

trichoMoniasis (trich) What it is: It is a parasitic infection. Frequency: Although there isn’t sufficient data on the number of people infected, it is one of the most curable, common STDs. How it happens: Trich spreads through vaginal sex. Symptoms: More often than not, there are no symptoms. However, some women do experience a smelly, foamy, green or yellow discharge and/ or discomfort in the genital area. Men experience a burning sensation while urinating or ejaculation, genital irritation and discharge from the penis. Prevention: There is no vaccine. The only way to prevent it is to abstain from sex and always use a condom.

Oatmeal: This one works for both men and women. While it boosts testosterone in men, it contains L-arginine which improves blood flow to the female sex organs. the worst foods for your sexual health Alcohol: While one or two drinks go a long way in putting both parties at ease, too much alcohol reduces your sex drive, arousal and sensitivity. Also, one drink too many and you are likely to find yourself making the worst decisions about sex ever! Fried foods: A packet of wafers is always so tempting but it is best to keep your cravings in check for the sake of your sexual health. The combination of bad fats coupled with the hot rancid oil in which frying of any food is carried out goes a long way in killing your libido. Soy: Here you were thinking soy is good for you and making you healthier. Well, it is. But, if you are a man, we suggest you control your soy intake. Soy contains phytoestrogens that compete with the male hormones and can cause fertility issues, body hair loss and even male breast growth. Yikes! Mint: While mint goes a long way in cooling you down and refreshing you, it has an adverse effect on your libido. Studies suggest, that having too much menthol can cool down your sex life and slow down your libido too.

Awesome food combos

Like Bonnie & Clyde or Raj Kapoor & Nargis, some things are just fit in well together. Glynda Alves brings you the food combinations that are a match made in the kitchen tomatoes & avoCadoes

>> Apple with chocolate is our favourite couple when it comes to awesome food combinations

This juicy red fruit is rich in an antioxidant called carotenoid, which helps reduce your risk of cancer and heart disease. And, good fats (found abundantly in avocado) make these carotenoids even better. That’s why you should always chop up a few tomatoes and mix it in your guacamole.

orange juiCe & oatmeal A typical breakfast often includes one of the two components. But, it is recommended that you have them both together. A study done by the U.S. Department of Agriculture showed that drinking orange juice while eating a bowl of real oatmeal cleans your arteries and helps prevent heart attacks.

aPPles & ChoColate This is one food combination we’re loving! Apples, especially red ones, are high in quercetin, an anti-inflammatory flavonoid. But, most of this good stuff is found in the skin, so don’t peel it and make sure your apples are organic and not laced with pesticide. Now, throw in a bit of chocolate because together these two sweet treats loosen clumpy blood platelets, which improves your cardiovascular health.

lemon & kale Kale is the new “it” food of 2014 and to make the most out of the leafy green, have it with a squeeze of lemon. The vitamin C present in lemons helps your body absorb the iron present in kale much better. The vitamin C goes as far as

to convert the plant based iron into a form that’s pretty similar to what’s found in fish and meat. This means that this is an ideal option for vegetarians who are low on iron.

Peanuts & Whole Wheat These two are really like two missing puzzle pieces. The specific amino acids absent in wheat are actually present in peanuts. You need this complete chain of amino acids to build and maintain muscle. So, dig into a peanut butter sandwich with whole wheat bread after a workout. Just make sure the peanut butter doesn’t have added sugar or preservatives.

garliC & Fish Fish is best seasoned with just a little salt and garlic. And this is not only going to please your taste buds but your body as well. Fish contains minerals such as zinc, iron, copper, iodine and selenium. And cooking fish with garlic lowers your total cholesterol and keeps down the small increase in LDL cholesterol.

almonds & yogurt Fat really has a bad reputation. Many vitamins and other good nutrients are only really absorbed by your body when eaten with a small dose of fat. Vitamins that are fat soluble include vitamins A, D and E. So, eat a little fat to boost your health. Drink vitamin C rich orange juice when you’re treating yourself to a rasher of bacon or toss some healthy almonds in with that creamy yogurt.

« know more: meAt-free protein options When we are told to eat protein, the food items that often top the list include chicken, fish, pork and eggs. Worry not vegetarians, as there are meat-free protein items that give you the same amount of protein. Priyanka Singh brings you a list Cottage Cheese Cottage cheese serves as a great snack. It’s affordable, comes in reduced-fat versions and also contains calcium to keep your bones strong. Combine it with fresh vegetables for a savoury treat, or add fruit to it for something sweet. Protein content: 13g per ½ cup

Quinoa This wonder grain is not only high in protein but also low in cholesterol and a good source of iron and fibre. Eating quinoa regularly is a good idea for vegetarians or anyone looking for a healthy

protein. Plus, some varieties only take 20 minutes to cook — you’ll know it’s done when it turns slightly translucent. Make quinoa salads, or use it instead of rice for a higher protein whole-grain. Protein content: 8g per 1 cup (cooked)

PumPkin seeds Pumpkin seeds are a great grab-and-go snack that can also double up as a topping for salads and soups. However, nuts and seeds can be high in calories and fat, so be mindful of your serving sizes. Protein content: 7g per 30g of seeds approximately

dried beans

Peanut butter

Dried black beans, kidney beans, lentils and chickpeas are all delicious choices for low-fat, fibre-filled protein. Protein content: 12g per 1 cup (black beans)

Spread more of this childhood favourite instead of butter on your toast. You can also add it to smoothies and baked items. Protein content: 8g per two tbsp

soy milk

almonds

While all soy, including tofu and soybeans, are excellent sources of protein, soy milk is convenient and versatile, making it the perfect product to keep handy. In addition, some brands offer options that are fortified with extra calcium. Protein content: 18g per 1 cup

The monounsaturated fats that almonds contain have been shown to reduce heart disease. Try sliced almonds on top of salads or create your own recipe to make their consumption more interesting. Protein content: 6g per 30g of almonds approximately

should you fire your trainer? Hiring someone as a personal trainer is expensive and you should know when they are not doing their job. Priyanka Singh draws up this quiz to help you find out

>> If your trainer spends a lot of time on the phone in between your sessions, he/she is not doing a good job

Your trainer does not write things down during a session. a. Yes. b. No. Your trainer asks you to do something that they themselves cannot demonstrate to you. a. Yes. b. No. Your trainer complains to you about how hard their job is. a. Yes. b. No. You are exactly the same size/shape you were when you first started

training with them six months ago. a. Yes. b. No. Your trainer talks on the phone/texts during your session. a. Yes. b. No. Your trainer yells at you and insults you if you do something wrong. a. Yes. b. No. Your trainer frequently takes breaks. a. Yes. b. No.

Mostly As Either this trainer is your friend or you really are very ignorant to have not realised that this trainer is no good for you. A trainer is supposed to note down your health problems, assuming that his brain is not a computer! If he doesn’t do that, it only means that he is putting your health at risk. Also, a trainer is supposed to demonstrate every exercise that he asks you to perform. You are paying your trainer to have their undivided attention, so texting or calling during the session is completely unacceptable. To top it all, you haven’t seen any improvement in yourself since the past six months. What are you waiting for? Mostly Bs You have found a right trainer for yourself and undoubtedly you should retain him or her. However, there are chances that he or she might start slacking if it has been a longer association for the two of you. So, look out for these signs at all times.

Boot camp @ home From increasing your stamina and endurance to giving you a super toned body, an intense boot camp workout has a number of benefits. Dev Goswami gives you the low-down on what exercises you need to do

I

nspired by the workouts done by the elite squads of the armed forces, the boot camp workout has become quite common in the world of fitness. The high intensity workout, which should absolutely not be attempted by beginners, is a great routine that burns fat, increases muscle and gives you a toned body which will go on to improve the feel-good factor about yourself. However, a word of caution: although you can perform these exercises on your own, visit a physical therapist or a trainer at least once to get their go ahead. Your body might not be ready for these exercises yet or you might have niggles, which can result in injuries if you aren’t cautious. The following exercises should take around 30-40 minutes.

squat thrusts

l Now keep your legs together and lift them, so that your heels are pointing toward the ceiling. Your hips should form a 90° angle with your torso. l Now raise your arms towards your toes and get them as close to each other as possible (touching them is not necessary and might even injure you, so be careful). Apart from a very slight bend in your knees, don’t move your legs too much. l Hold the position for a few seconds and then go back to the starting position. l Do as many as you can in half a minute (more speed means more intensity). On the last rep, don’t go back to the starting position and instead go directly to the next exercise.

Box-and-reach

Squat down (make sure your feet are together) and place your palms on the floor, next to your feet. l In a fast, coordinated movement, jump and push your feet backwards till your legs are stretched out and you end up in a push-up position. l With the same fast movement, bring your feet back into a squatting position. l Perform two sets (with not more than a minute’s rest) of a total of 10 repetitions. l

walking lunges

l Once you finish the last rep of the vertical leg crunches, take a breather while your legs are still in the air. l Then, raise your torso a bit and twist it a little towards the left side. Simultaneously, bring your right fist around in a way you would if you were punching someone sitting next to your left thigh. l Lower your torso and repeat on the other side. l Perform as many box-and-reaches as you can in half a minute.

aving back pain is not uncommon. In fact, it’s so incredibly common that people often suffer in silence, failing to question it because, well, it happens to everyone, right? Dr. Namita Dhuri, a physiotherapist at Qi Spine Clinic, tells us, “According to the National Institute of Health, eight out of 10 people suffer from back pain at some point in their lives. Most of the time, back pain is set off by something totally minor. But, there are a wide range of primary and secondary reasons that cause this health problem in our lives.” Secondary causes include gastric disorders, post trauma, post pregnancy or surgery and hernia. But, the primary causes are something we can change. Then there’s chronic back pain, which is largely caused due to the weather. “This is because cold weather causes tissues to shrink, making them pull on nerve endings, which causes pain. When it is cold, nerve endings are extremely sensitive and the muscles

surrounding them tense up,” Dr. Namita explains. She tells us about the primary causes and how to deal with chronic pain:

Primary causes Overuse of muscles, ligaments & joints: The spine is held in place by the muscles surrounding it. If these muscles are overworked and not strengthened, your load hits the spine. l Pressure on nerve roots in the spinal canal: This can be caused by a herniated disc, osteoarthritis, spondylolisthesis, spinal canal stenosis, fractures of the vertebrae or spinal deformities. l Obesity: This makes the spine work harder. l Poor posture: Poor ergonomics at work coupled with a sedentary lifestyle can lead to bad posture and weaker muscles. l Excessive unsupervised workouts: Incorrect form causes immediate damage. l Smoking: Tobacco increases the rate of l

disc degeneration and discectomy. l Incorrect lifting techniques: Bending over to lift objects puts the load of the entire effort on your spine. And heavier the object, more the back pain.

Deal with your Pain l Exercise

your back regularly to strengthen your back muscles — walk, run or ask your doctor for spine strengthening exercises. l Always bend your knees and your hips, not your back to distribute the weight. l Avoid sling bags. l Avoid slumping in your chair, hunching over a desk or walking with your shoulders hunched. Use a chair with a backrest. Sit with your feet flat on the floor. l Quit smoking and lose excess weight — a lighter body results in less load on the spine. l Warm up before heading out into the cold by stretching tight muscles.

>> Regularly exercising your back will actually relieve your pain as it strengthens your back muscles

Grieving together

Helping a friend through their grief is not an easy task. Rhea Dhanbhoora tells you how to go about it without being overbearing

dealinG with panic attacKs Touted as one of the most distressing conditions one can experience, not many people know what a panic attack actually is. Shirley Mistry tells you all you need to know

S

imply put, a panic attack is a severe feeling of fear and anxiety to the extent that it can immobilise you. The average attack lasts for more than 10 minutes and those who experience attacks regularly are said to suffer from panic disorder. Also, panic attacks by themselves are a symptom for other diseases such as schizophrenia and Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). They are also a large part of withdrawal symptoms from substance-abuse.

the sYmptoms

L

ast week, we gave you pointers to help you deal with personal grief. But, even if you know someone who is going through a loss, you need to know how to console them. While it’s obviously extremely hard for them, most of us are confused about what to do or say to help someone cope. Here are a few things you should keep in mind.

Don’t start with these Sometimes, even the most well meaning people say things that don’t help a person who is grieving. To make sure you don’t make them feel worse, take a look at what not to say: “Come on, be strong” That has to be one of the worst things to say to someone who is grieving. Never make them feel as though crying or grieving over a loved one means that they are weak. Let them express their grief instead of bottling it in. “it was meant to happen” That is one of the most common things people say, along with “They are happier now” or “It all happened for a reason.” It may be true, but it doesn’t help someone who is grieving. “But at least they lived a good, long life” This implies that because their lives were not cut short and were filled with happiness, their family members and loved ones don’t have a right to feel as bad about their passing. Avoid saying this. “You’re still young” If you know someone who has lost a partner or child, the worst thing you can do is suggest that a replacement is around the corner. Seriously, it’s very tacky to say this.

“Don’t live in the past” People who lose their loved ones do want to remember them, so to a certain extent they will be living in the past a little. It’s not right to deny them their nostalgia. “You did all you could” We’re not even sure what that’s supposed to mean. Anyone caring for a sick relative or friend will do all that they can, so there’s no need to mention it like it was a heroic act to be proud of. “Look on the bright side” Really? We don’t think we need to explain why this is one of the most inappropriate things to say to someone who is grieving. “i know how you feel” Because you probably don’t and it’s not right to say something like that to trivialise how they feel. Even if you do know how they feel, it’s a cliché that they don’t need right now.

insteaD… Be a good friend, a pillar of support and someone who is there for your friend — but not all the time. To strike the best balance between being there for them and not interfering in their grieving process, this should help: l The most important thing is to not treat their loss as taboo. Don’t be afraid to mention names or events revolving around the person they have lost because if you look like you’re avoiding it, they will not be able to open up to you about how they feel. In certain cultures though (such as Australian Aboriginal ones), mentioning the departed is taboo — so consider that too first. l Offer a sense of hope by helping them get

back with small tasks. Run errands with them, help them with projects — slowly guide them get back to life so they can move on, but never force them into it. l Call occasionally to check up on them but don’t bombard them with calls or messages. Give them their space to grieve on their own. l If you were close to the deceased as well, maybe you could go through the process together. Writing a note to remember them by is a good way to start. l Help them out — don’t just offer to help. Actually do things for them that they may not be able to do. Cook, clean or help in whatever small way you can. Don’t put it across as “helping them” because they can’t do it for themselves, instead make it seem like it’s not really a big deal and you’re doing it because you have some time to spare. l Form a routine where you meet them often. Saying you’ll get together to talk or have a meal is easy but actually doing it is hard. Setting a routine is sometimes not a good idea, because they can get dependent on you, but mostly it’s a good way for them to get out and feel better in your company. l People grieve in different ways so do not assume that you know what’s best for them. Avoid criticising things and instead just be there as their silent pillar of support. Listeners make the best friends. l If they do get angry with you, don’t shut down or pull away because it’s a part of the grieving process and you may be the closest person to them. They’re just venting, so be patient.

The most common symptoms associated with a panic disorder are: l A racing heart or palpitations. l The fear of death or something terrible happening. l Fear of being embarrassing. l The fear of going crazy. l Nausea. l An upset stomach. l Severe dizziness. l Feeling smothered or breathless. l Tingling or numb hands. l Severe chest pain. l Trembling. l Hot flashes and/ or chills. l Feeling trapped and experiencing an unsurpassable urge to escape.

what Do i Do?

Hyperventilation causes other reactions such as lightheadedness and claustrophobia. Deep breathing will help control the attack. An increased consumption of caffeine and products containing caffeine can cause panic attacks. So, it is best to avoid coffee, cigarettes, diet pills and other caffeine products if you are susceptible to panic attacks. Also, reading about panic attacks will make you more aware of the disorder and better prepared. This way, you will understand that the sensations you are experiencing are symptoms of a panic attack.

not a heart attaCk

Symptoms of a panic attack are often so severe, that patients begin to feel that they are having a heart attack. It has been found that several people suffering from panic attacks head to hospitals for what they are convinced is a heart attack. While it isn’t wrong to get a medical opinion, panic is often overlooked as a potential cause for a heart attack. But, in most cases, it is a panic attack and not a heart attack.

Through Thin & Thick Have you noticed that running your fingers through your hair isn’t the same experience as before? You may be dealing with thinning hair, says Rhea Dhanbhoora

W

e’ve told you before but we’ll tell you again — thinning hair and baldness are not something that you can wait till you’re over 40-years-old to think about and these problems don’t just affect men. Women suffer from it, young people suffer from it — in fact, with the stress and tension of our modern lifestyles, thinning hair is becoming more of an issue with a lot of youth.

What are the Causes ? There are several causes, but we’re telling you about the most common: l Stress: Whether it’s physical or mental, stress plays a huge role in causing your hair to thin out over the years. Although it usually regains its healthy state once you’re calm and collected again, constant stress can make thinning hair a permanent problem. l Medicines & vitamins: Too much of a good thing always turns bad. Overdoing any kind of medication or supplement can cause your hair to start thinning. Lack of vitamins can also lead to the same problem. Even anti depressants and certain blood thinners can cause this problem. l Pregnancy & hormone changes: For some women, pregnancy and sudden hormone changes can cause hair to thin quickly.

barbara, Our beauty exPert, Will helP fix yOur PrOblems

Again, this is mostly temporary but it does mean that you will have to take better care of your hair. l Diet & nutrition: Are you getting enough protein? If not, you’re contributing to your thinning hair. l Genes: Sometimes, all you can do is take really good care of your hair and hope for the best. This is especially true if your thinning hair is a byproduct of hereditary conditions. l Health issues & age: Anemia, aging and hypothyroidism are all reasons for thinning hair. While you can’t turn back the clock, you can start taking care of your health and your hair now. l Overstyling: Too many hair products, too much styling and overdoing anything that makes you look good now, will make you look bad later. Thinning hair often occurs when your hair becomes weak because of overstyling. So take it easy.

Physically, apart from red skin, there’s no other sign and while the condition hasn’t worsened, the sensation hasn’t gone away. It hurts a lot when I walk. The impact of the proposed tariff cut on Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) through which the tariff cut shall be administered , is expected to be revenue neutral as the shortfall is to be funded primarily by way of subsidy from Government of Maharashtra. In the past, MSEDCL has been receiving tariff subsidy from the state government in a timely manner (Rs.4,929 crore for the period April 01 to March 31, 2013) and the overall realization of subsidy has been around 100% in the past. “Going forward, continued timely release of additional funds by the state will be crucial for MSEDCL to maintain its credit profile,”explained Jaripatke.

Small And Mid-Cap Funds Outshine All Other Equity Schemes By A Business Reporter

mall and mid-cap equity funds have given the highest returns among equity-oriented funds in almost all timeframes ended December 31, 2013, according to the lastest Crisil report on the sector which is also represented by the CRISIL – AMFI Small & Midcap Fund Performance Index. CRISIL computed the returns of equity-oriented funds for the latest quarter as well as longer time frames. The small and mid-cap category emerged as the chartbuster beating its large-cap, diversified and ELSS peers, and the category benchmark, CNX Midcap Index over two-year, three-year and fiveyear periods. In fact, for the quarter ended December, which saw all equity categories outperform their respective category benchmarks, the CRISIL – AMFI Small & Midcap Fund Performance Index generated absolute return of 19.21%, higher

than not only the CNX Midcap Index’s 15.34%, but also the broader-market barometer CNX Nifty’s 9.92%, said the report. Better sector selection – specifically, higher allocation to sectors such as industrial products coupled with lower exposure to oil & gas and power in the latest quarter. The absolute returns for sectoral indices are S&P BSE Capital Goods (33.19%), S&P BSE Oil & Gas (7.52%) and S&P BSE Power (11.69%) compared to CNX Midcap Index (15.34%) over the quarter (see Table 2). Within the small and mid-cap category, CRISIL Fund Rank 1 funds had higher exposure to sectors such as pharmaceuticals, auto & auto ancillaries and were underweight banking & financial services, oil & gas and power over the three-year period, it added. At the fund house level, UTI Mutual Fund and Birla Sun Life Mutual Fund led the tally of top-ranked funds for the quarter ended De-

cember 2013 with eight funds each under CRISIL Fund Rank 1, followed by ICICI Prudential Mutual Fund with seven and IDFC Mutual Fund with five funds. Unlike most other ranking models that are purely based on returns or net asset value (NAV), CRISIL Mutual Fund Ranking uses a combination of NAV and portfolio-based attributes for evaluation. This provides a singlepoint analysis of mutual funds, taking into consideration key parameters like risk-adjusted returns, asset concentration, liquidity, asset quality and asset size. The rankings also include categories that focus specifically on long-term consistency in performance. The ranks are assigned on a scale of 1 to 5, with CRISIL Fund Rank 1 indicating ‘very good performance’. In any peer group, the top 10 percentile of funds are ranked as CRISIL Fund Rank 1 and the next 20 percentile are ranked as CRISIL Fund Rank 2, concluded the report.

Market Weakness Baffles Traders By Dominic Rebello

he S&P BSE Sensex clocked a new high just last week, while the Nifty was within kissing distance of its previous closing high, but since last Friday the markets have declined steeply due to various local and global factors. Last Friday all the three major indices of the US market declined sharply. The Asian markets too were hit as the emerging-market currencies took a beating amid growing worries about slowing Chinese growth due to tighter credit conditions in China. Apprehensions rose after a Forbes report that the People's Bank of China has halted bank

cash transfers ahead of the upcoming Lunar New Years holiday sparked fears of a nation-wide liquidity crunch. The Japan's benchmark index fell to its lowest levels since November, extending last Friday's 2% fall, after the yen hit a new seven-week high at 101.77/$ in early trade. Investors are wary over emerging markets performance and are expected to invest in safe havens in the coming days. On the domestic front the markets are cautious ahead of the RBI's monetary policy review today. Weakness in the global markets and Asian markets along with the Fed tapering of the monetary policy affected trader sentiment.

The Sound of Music H

By Amarendra Dhaneshwar

RIDAYESH Arts is a premier event organising outfit which has been arranging a festival of classical music and dance for the last 24 years in the metropolis. The venue of the open-air festival is in Vile Parle (East) – an area which has a considerable population of genuine music lovers. The festival organised the last weekend was a huge success in terms of audience participation and the general level of performances. This year, the festival opened with a santoor recital by Satish Vyas who is a now a senior exponent of the instrument. He was accompanied on the tabla by Mukundraj Deo while Ashwinini Bhide, the popular singer of the Jaipur Attruali gharana, sang khayals in the ragas 'Bihagada' and 'Sohini'. Ashwini's music always conforms to a certain standard and it did on this occasion as well. She was accompanied by Seema Shirodkar on the harmonium and Vishwanath Shriodkar on the tabla. Sitarist Budhaditya Mukherjee, however, was the real star of the opening day of the festival. He played at this festival after a gap of almost 13 years. Budhaditya is a sitarist who is truly international in his appeal as well as his stature. He has played as a youngster at the Royal Albert Hall in London to an audience which included highbrow Londoners. When sitar maestro Vilayat Khan reached 75 years of age, he had chosen Budhaditya to play as the representative of the Imdadkhani gharana. Budhaditya played the raga 'Anandi Kalyan' which is another name for the raga 'Nand' and literally took the audience's breath away. This raga, when played with proper use of glissandos (meend) and gamak( oscillations), really blooms in all its glory. It also has the 'vakra' movement. Budhaditya's 'Nand' certainly conformed to this description. The note patterns as well as gamaks, the scintillating super fast taans, and particularly the descending ones, really rendered the audience speechless with admiration. He also played splendid alaaps in the raga 'Pilu' which conveyed the sense of yearning beautifully. Ojas Adhiya on the tabla was simply brilliant. Rashid Khan, who is considered the numero uno singer of the present era, regaled listeners with morning ragas. One does not usually get a chance to listen to Khan live at his hour of the day. There were two jugal bandi sessions in this festival, both featuring heavy weight musicians. Kathak dance emperor Birju Maharaj engaged his son and pupil Deepak Maharaj – is not seen much on the city concert platform – in a jugalbandi. The last session saw a tabla jugalbandi by two towering tabla maestros. While Anindo Chatterjee is the outstanding exponent of the Farukhabad gharana, Kumar Bose is equal in stature and plays the Benaras style. Their first ever jugalbandi was a big draw. The festival concluded with a performance by the Mewati gharana maestro Jasraj who sang the raga 'Jaijaivanti'.

When dance and music met By Vijay Shanker

OUNDARYA Natya Kalalaya presented the debut Bharata Natyam performance by Palak Phaphat at the Somaiya College of Engineering auditorium in Vidyavihar. Besides the cheerful disposition of the dancer, what was most striking was the passion and the considerable command over technique and expressional dancing. Music is an extension of dance and vice versa, and what dominated the entire performance was the commendable musical support rendered by Guru Padmini Radhakrishnan and Raji Vishwanathan. In fact, Palak is indeed fortunate to have her mentor as her vocalist too. The musical quality that took the performance to sublime heights was evident with the commencing invocatory numbers to the

concluding folkish Kurathi and the divine Hanuman Chalisa. In the most elaborate number, the Varnam, the dancer revealed her command over the essentials of Bharata Natyam like Nritte, Nritya and Natya. In Swagatham, Palak portrayed the glory and grandeur and the multi-facets of Lord Krishna. In the Snake Dance, Palak won appreciation from the audience for her typical characteristic movements. While the Thillana was noteworthy for its intricate rhythmic patterns, the Kurathi was thrilling for its folkish touch of jumps and movements. Palak is a vivacious danseuse and can scale great heights if she continues to dance with the same amount of zeal and passion. Palak recieved fine orchestral support from Guru Padmini and Raji on the nattuvangam and vocals, and Shankaranaryan on the mridangam, Anantharaman on the violin, and Dr. Sumitra Venkatesh with the fine compering.

The performances by Angad Mhaiskar and Pradeep Patwardhan are good. Sarita Mehendale makes a good debut. Irawati Lagu too shows promise. Ramesh Bhide’s cameo is good. Yashodhan Mavlankar supports well. Ashok Patki’s music does justice to the play. The art by Pradeep Patil is apt for the subject of the play. The lighting has been utilised well to enhance the sequence of the play.

India eye win in fourth ODI to keep series alive against NZ

By Chetan Narula

H

MS Dhoni hooks against New Zealand during their second one-day international cricket match at Seddon Park.

India to push for lion’s share of revenue at ICC board meet

DUBAI: The BCCI will have its task cut as the richest cricket board in the world pushes for lion's share of revenue from ICC's earnings along with two cricket boards from England and Australia at the two-day executive board meeting of the governing body here today. It will be a 'three versus seven' fight at the meeting with BCCI, England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) having prepared a ‘Position Paper' which will allow these three boards to control the parent body's functioning.

AMILTON: Having snatched a thrilling tie from the jaws of defeat in the last game, India would look to build on their new-found momentum and aim for their first win of the tour in order to keep the contest alive when they take on New Zealand in the fourth ODI, here today. The series stands at 2-0 in favour of New Zealand after India lost the first two ODIs in Napier (by 24 runs) and Hamilton (by 15 runs), while the third ODI at Auckland finished in a scintillating last-ball tie on Saturday. Even though India cannot win the series anymore, the visitors at least can level the rubber and keep their world number one ranking intact, but for that to happen they need need to win today's match at Seddon Park as well as the fifth ODI at Wellington. India's bowling in favourable New Zealand conditions has been a big let down for the team, but the fighting spirit and resilience of Indian batsmen took the first two ODIs close and tied the third to keep the series alive. India, however, can take heart from its performance in the third ODI. Chasing an imposing 315, Ravindra Jadeja nearly pulled off a sensational win before the contest ended in a tie. Jadeja smacked the Kiwi bowlers to all parts of the ground to scored an unbeaten 45ball 66 to take India close in the third ODI from a no-hope position. He was ably supported by Ravichandran Ashwin who scored a quickfire 65 off 46 balls. Interestingly, one of the key features of this series so far has been the fact that India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni has won the toss and opted to chase in all three previous games. It is a practice that runs long back. In South Africa, Dhoni won the toss in the first two ODIs at Johannesburg and Durban, and elected to chase, thereafter losing both matches. At home prior, in two ODIs versus Australia (Ranchi and Nagpur) and one against West In-

dies (Kanpur), Dhoni did the same. The last time India batted first after winning the toss was in January 2013, against England at Kochi. In 18 ODIs since then, home or away, the Men in Blue have always preferred to chase down targets after winning the toss. The last time India batted first abroad, after winning the toss, was against Sri Lanka at Pallekele, all the way back in August 2012. If the subcontinent is taken out of this consideration, then the last occasion of India batting first after winning the toss was against South Africa in Johannesburg on January 15, 2011, a full three years ago. It clearly shows that there is a high propensity for the Men in Blue to field first. New Zealand, on the other hand, has preferred to bat first and come today, the script will be more or less similar on a pitch that will be slow and become slower in the second innings. Taking that into consideration, New Zealand will definitely want to bat first and once again post a big total on the board for the Indians to chase.

I'M IN BEST FRAME OF MIND: ASHWIN He might be going through a lean patch with the ball but R Ashwin contributed with the bat in Auckland and the Indian allrounder said he is very comfortable with his cricket right now and is in best frame of mind ahead of the fourth ODI against New Zealand today. Ashwin's maiden ODI half-century, which came while batting at number seven along with Ravindra Jadeja, helped India snatch a tie at Eden Park in the third ODI to stay alive in the five-match series. "It was a good opportunity presented to me in terms of batting higher up the order. You do not often get so many overs to bat in the current Indian line-up. They always do the job of getting the runs. I got enough overs that day and I thought to just bat the way I bat in a Test match and look for runs all the time. It helped me out in the end," said Ashwin.

Spend more time on badminton court: HC tells Sawant M

UMBAI: The Bombay High Court asked shuttler Prajakta Sawant who had levelled allegations of mental harassment against India's chief national coach Pullela Gopichand to improve her performance on badminton court to make herself eligible for selection in the core Indian team. A division bench of Chief Justice Mohit Shah and Justice M S Sanklecha was hearing a petition filed by the 19-year-old shuttler last year alleging harassment by Gopichand and that she was left out of the All

India National Coaching Camp in Hyderabad at his behest. She further alleged that Gopichand being the national coach and a member of the Badminton Association of India (BAI) selection committee he promoted players from his own private academy, Pullela Gopichand Badminton Academy in Hyderabad, and she was being targeted. BAI counsel Nimay Dave informed the court that Sawant had performed poorly in recently held Syed Modi tournament in Lucknow

due to which she was not selected in the All England Open and German Open events. "Now start spending more time on the badminton court instead of here (high court). This litigation cannot go on and on. We need to put an end to this," chief justice Shah said. Sawant's counsel Piyush Shah pleaded with court to give another hearing to the petitioner saying selection process for other Indian tournaments would be underway soon. The court then posted the matter on February 10.

India, Mozambique lock horns for football gold

PANAJI: A keen contest is on the cards when Goa (India) take on Mozambique tomorrow for the football gold in the 3rd Edition of the Lusofonia Games 2014. Goa (India), who played brilliant football right throughout this tournament, outplayed Macau with their skillful play as they dominated the ball procession throughout to beat them 2-0 in the semi-finals. They would have won by a bigger margin but lacked in finishing, which they cannot afford tomorrow against Mozambique, who are tougher opponents and will not allow any space to the hosts. The home team has played Mozambique twice in the group stage in which they won once and lost in another game. Goa (India), who are assured of a medal this time, had lost all their matches and conceded 18 goals at the last Lusofonia Games. The team has a major advantage in home crowd, which will back them to the hilt at Nehru Stadium, Fatorda, in Margao. Goa (India) will once again rely on their play-maker Brandon Fernandes to lead the charge. His effective kick in the dead ball situation will be handy for the team's success. Sahil Tavora, who gave good account in the midfield and scored a solo goal in Goa (India)'s win against Macau, will not play today on account of double booking and it will be a big blow to the team as he is known as the driving force in the attack. Nickson Castanha is likely to replace him in the middle. However, good news for Goa (India) is that Mozambique will be without their creative midfielder Bernardino Jose, who got red card against Sri Lanka in the semi-finals. If Goa (India)'s defense succeeds in warding off their aggressive opponents and able to score half chances, they stand a good chance to bag the gold.

M

ELBOURNE: If every champion were as humble as Stanislas Wawrinka, sport would be a very fine place indeed to celebrate all that is admirable about human endeavour. If every loser took defeat the way Rafael Nadal accepted his opponent's bursts of excellence and his own physical breakdown during the final of the Australian Open, that environment would be as close to perfect as we have any right to demand. This was one of those sporting occasions – a good way short of greatness but utterly memorable, with a sliver of controversy – to

WAWRINKA EARNS A PLACE IN THE ELITE

encourage applause and set aside cynicism. As journalists and television commentators jostled to garland the winner with accolades and pepper him for insights, Wawrinka remained as blushingly unmoved as he normally does on court. Except that earlier in the evening the old misgivings that have checked his development flooded back at the most inconvenient moment to send shivers of doubt through his racket when he was in sight of victory. The Swiss found enough resolve to ignore Nadal's back

problems and finished strongly, but there were plenty of people in the Rod Laver Arena who wondered if this most diffident of athletes had the steel to cut down his stricken opponent. Was he too nice to win? Among them was his coach since April, Magnus Norman, who observed: "I thought he was a little bit soft in the third set, I was not really happy with the way he took the situation. Obviously it's really difficult when you play someone and you feel that he is suffering. You get tentative. "He was pushing his shots a little bit, but then in the fourth he

came back again and started to play his game. That was good that he came back." Norman added: "I took the job because Stan for me is a really humble guy, a nice guy. I didn't take the job because I thought he was going to be top five or something like that but I knew he had great results in him." Wawrinka did it, though. He proved nearly every expert wrong. And he did it his way, a little awkwardly. When they embraced at the finish, Wawrinka smothered Nadal with sympathy, as if he had stolen his pet dog. He did not feel guilty beating a wounded foe, but he did feel concern for an opponent he is happy to call "a great friend". For years, Wawrinka has climbed tantalisingly within reach of the summit of his sport. On Sunday night, he put his hands on top of the mountain and dragged himself to the top, his red-tipped, turned-up nose lighting up a face that shouted bliss. He is the first No 8 in the world to win a slam since Brian Teacher won this event 33 years ago. He is the first player to beat Novak Djokovic and Nadal in a slam tournament. He is the first man to defeat the top two seeds at a slam since Sergi Bruguera in 1993 at Roland Garros. He did not know any of these things, but he was happy to accept them. Did he, then, wonder if he could ever be No1 in the world? "No, not at all," the 28-year-old said. "I'm trying to improve my game, step after step. And we'll see. "I never dreamed about winning a grand slam because, for me, I was not good enough to beat those guys. I still think I'm dreaming. It's a strange feeling. But I did it."
