he Election Commission has released the list of election duties for teachers, triggering a chaotic situation for schools, colleges and the university. As more than 90 per cent of the teachers will be busy with election duties, the final examinations of these educational institutes will see a shortage of teachers and supervisors. Having no option left, the Mumbai University (MU) has postponed its exams, and colleges and schools will also reschedule theirs. As per a Government Resolution (GR), teachers have to be engaged in election and census duties of the government, which are compulsory and will be considered as paid leave along with remuneration for

the election duties. As the academic year is nearing its end, schools colleges and university have scheduled their final exams, keeping in mind the elections. But the education department has now forwarded the election duty list asking them to assign various duties to the teachers. As nearly all the teachers have been assigned poll duties, there is no option for the educational institutions but to reschedule the exams. Uday Nare, senior teacher, Hansraj Morarji Public School, Andheri, told the ADC, “According to the GR, teachers will have to go on a five-day election training program due to which we will be unable to conduct the exams. The election duty has actually landed the teachers and exam schedules in a mess!” As per the procedure, teachers will have to go on a five-day election duty camp during where they will be briefed about their duties. The MU has postponed 126 papers at 476 centres on March 28 and April 1, 2014 for which 88,000 students would be appearing. Just a week ago, the varsity had postponed its exams which were to be conducted on April 16, 17, 23 and 24. Dr, Naresh Chandra, Pro Vice Chancellor, MU, said: “Many principals have informed that their staff members have been given election duties. On March 28 and April 1, training will be given to many employees which may disturb smooth conduct of examinations and hence it has been decided to postpone the exams. The inconvenience caused to students is regretted. The rescheduled dates of the exams will be declared as soon as possible.”

CITY OPINIONS

Do you agree with the BCCI president Shashank Manohar to suspend IPL-7 till CBI probe on match fixing is completed?

Ajay Valecha Photographer Yes, the suspension of IPL-7 is a clear thought as the public at large has lost its faith in IPL games.

Farhan Fayyaz Sheikh Choreographer I agree as the probe is required, but a lot of people will lose money and sponsors will be unhappy if the IPL is scrapped this year. Dhanesh Kandhari Anchor Before starting off with the Season 1, if a proper investigation would have been done the problems would not have increased now. Pratik More Actor Cricket is the most popular game in India and enjoys dedicated viewership of millions. This viewership is what generates income and fuels BCCI's clout on an international level which would definitely fail to win hearts of the fans. Rahul Lall Social Media Executive We all know that greed is one of the evils of the world and what is happening regarding cricket at the moment is a microcosm of exactly that. The game is sadly losing serious credibility at an alarming rate.

he Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at BMC run KEM hospital is all set to get an upgradation with regards to infrastructure, both civil and mechanical, as well as latest equipments and machines. This is an initiative of the the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) cell of the BMC. Along with CSR partner Mazgaon Docks Ltd., the BMC is undertaking the upgradation of the NICU at KEM which will cost around Rs.3.7 crore and will be done over a period of two years. Speaking about this upgradation, Dr. Shubhangi Parker, Acting Dean, KEM hospital said, “This is a step to give the neo-nates better care and medical assistance. This upgradation will see better machines and a

re-organised NICU at KEM. It will done in phases.” Currently, the capacity of the NICU at KEM is 37 but more often than not it has more children admitted than its capacity. “Our NICU capacity is generally stretched up to 120 per cent to 150 per cent but still we try and help every child in need as much as we can. This upgradation might not see much of an increase in capacity but quality assurance would be higher,” said Parker. The upgradation will not hamper the current services. The children will be shifted elsewhere while the work is on, informed Parker. “The work will be undertaken in phases so that services are not interrupted. The work should probably begin within a month or so,” said Parker.

Complaint against Big B for promoting superstition By A Staff Reporter

A

complaint was filed yesterday in a magistrate's court here against Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan and a few others for allegedly promoting "false beliefs" in a TV advertisement, PTI reported. Activist Hemant Patil, the complainant, has demanded registration of a police case against them under Maharashtra Prevention and Eradication of Human Sacrifice and Other Inhuman, Evil and Aghori Practices and Black Magic Act, 2013. Bachchan had played a ghost in the Bollywood movie 'Bhoothnath', and its sequel, 'Bhoothnath Returns' is the pipeline.

Patil's complaint is about a TV commercial for health drink brand 'Complan' where Bachchan reprises his ghost character from the film. He says that the advertisement promotes belief in the existence of ghosts and spirits and consequently the need for the magic to ward them off. “The food-product company has come out with a 45-second advertisement on the issue without publishing any disclaimer before or after the broadcast,” said Patil's lawyer, advocate Wajid Pathan. Suburban Bandra police refused to register a complaint, so Patil had to move the court, the petition says. Magistrate Sita Kulkarni would hear it on April 18. Azad Shrivastav | ADC

Mahavitran to sell 100 MW Barks now power to BEST at Rs.3.25 per unit worse than bites

MUMBAI | FRIDAY, MARCH 28, 2014

BEST had called recently for a tender for procurement of power which was won by Mahavitaran

By A Staff Reporter

M

aharashtra's state discom Mahavitran will sell 100 MW power to Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport Company (BEST), which supplies power to the island city, after settling issues concerning availability of power in the rest of the state. "The state utility is all set to supply power at the cost of Rs 3.25 per unit for the period of April 2014 to March 2015," a Mahavitran release said yesterday.

By Philip Varghese

E

xperts from the Ministry of Civil Aviation from Delhi will today land in the city to monitor the height cap limit given by the ministry to the decade-old Dharavi Redevelopment Project, which had recently slowed down due to various hurdles related to clearances and encroachments in the area. This comes after the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) has written a letter to the Chairman of the Ministry of Civil Aviation highlighting the issue that it is unable to complete the first building on which it had started work in the year 2012, due to a height cap by the ministry. The Dharavi slum is spread over 240 hectares in Central Mumbai and is one of Asia’s largest slums and it neighbouring localities include Bandra, the Bandra-Kurla Complex, Sion and Mahim, which are prime real estate locations. MHADA is the special planning authority dedicated for sector 5 of Dharavi which stretches over 65 hectares, out of which 24 hectares (2,40,000 sq.mt.) is developable. The date of completion of this building is however contingent to the housing body receiving height clearance from the Ministry of Civil Aviation. The housing board had started the construction of this building while the development plan was yet to be finalized.

"Recently, BEST had called for a tender for procurement of power which was won by Mahavitaran. The utility has received the contract of selling 100 MW power to BEST. Besides, some other states have also shown interest in buying power from Mahavitaran. It has already planned for the required power till 2019- 2020," the release said. According to Mahavitran, the utility has taken power from every possible source to bridge the demand-supply gap. "...However, since June 2013, Mahavitaran has not done any short-term

power purchase. On the contrary, Mahavitaran regularly sells 200-500 MW power to others during night hours," it said. Mahavitran claimed that nearly 85 per cent of the state is free from loadshedding. "In the wake of encouraging honest consumers, Mahavitaran has purposely implemented load shedding in urban areas having more than 42 per cent Distribution and Commercial Losses (DCL) and in rural areas having more than 45 per cent DCL," the statement added.

he Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) claims that they have sterilised 66,087 stray dogs in the city till date, which is almost 80 per cent of the total dogs. The dog census had begun on January 6 this year. The census survey was carried out by M/s. eripheral Railway hospitals in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) are facing a shortage of medicines, according to railway employees who are regular visitors at local railway hospitals. The employees alleged that shortage of these medicines has put their lives in danger. At the moment, the medicines for blood pressure and diabetes are falling short. These two are very common diseases among the railway employees due to their lifestyle and 24x7 work shifts. After complaints from employees, the office of the General Manager interevened in the matter and notified that an employee can directly come to the Byculla railway hospital, even without reference from local hospital and get the required medicines. set of clearances. For the construction of the first building, which will have a total of 18 floors, MHADA is awaiting permission from the Ministry of Civil Aviation to construct the building to its proposed height. Accordingly, B. G Shirke Construction Technology Pvt Ltd was chosen to construct this building and work orders were given in 2012. However, the construction began only last year year due to political protests. “The building is complete till the ninth floor. The building has till now received a clearance for 13 floors. The structural work till the 13th floor is complete. The flats have been constructed using relatively modern specifications. The Civil aviation department has

accorded permission only till 56 metres for the building and an additional 80 metres permission is required for the project to go as per the plans. However, since the area is closest to the airport, only the civil aviation department can give a nod to increase the height cap,” an officer from MHADA said. The officer further said, “The experts from the Civil Aviation Ministry will come to Mumbai and record the study of the entire project along with the possibility of granting the additional height cap to the project. They will file a report on this before the ministry and accordingly if the green signal is given, we can go ahead with the project.” philip.varghese@afternoondc.in

The BMC had appointed eight NGOs in seven civic administrative zones to sterilise dogs from November 13, 2007 and 49,000 dogs were sterilised till January 31, 2011. The study group for stray dogs had approved the proposal of carrying out dog census from the Human Society International. The organisation has proposed an estimated cost of Rs.9.82 lakh for carrying out the dog census and the BMC had made a provision of Rs.12 lakh in the budget for dog census. “As the Human Society International is the only organisation with an experience of carrying out dog census, we decided to allot them the contract without inviting any public tenders”, the official said. khushboo.panjabi@afternoondc.in

Speaking to the ADC, defence lawyer advocate R.G.Gadgil said, “The High Court has observed very clearly that this is not a rarest of the rare case and has refsued to interfere at this stage. So we will proceed in the Sessions Court accordingly from tomorrow.” Earlier, Defence lawyers, advocate Prakash Salsingikar and advocate R.G. Gadgil argued that both are not repeated offenders and the rape cases were tried simultaneously, even though both have separate case numbers. The bench had asked criminal lawyer Aabad Ponda to assist the court as 'amicus curiae' (friend of the court) in the matter and check legal points to state whether charges could be amended and added, who told the court that under section 216 of the Criminal Procedure Code, once a judgment is pronounced, charges cannot be added or altered. “The judgment given by the Sessions Principal Judge states in one of the paragraphs that the judgment was delivered in the open court. There should be a separate trial for every distinct offence. In this case, both the trial were conducted simultaneously.” philip.varghese@afternoondc.in

he Sessions Court,Vasai has awarded life sentence to a 44-year-old step father sexually assautling his stepdaughter and stepson. First Class Judicial Magistrate, R. M.Joshi, also ordered monetary compensation of Rs. 1 lakh each to both the kids, failing which the convict will have to spend an additional year in jail. ZakirAlam Shaikh (44), who was arrested on June 5, 2013, not only violated his 11year-old stepdaughter, but also sodomised his 12-year-old stepson for a period of more than two years, at their tenement in the Samel Pada area of Nalasopara (East). Shaikh worked with a private company and had married the victim’s mother in 2009. In her complaint to the police, the victim’s mother stated that Alam committed the crime when she stepped out of the house to work, however both the chil-

dren remained silent due to fear. But when the siblings could not take it any more, they mustered courage and narrated the horrific tale to their mother. The mother lodged a complaint against her husband at the Nalasopara police station. While the girl studied in standard VI, her elder brother is a standard VII student of a private school, police said. After learning that his wife had registered a complaint, Alam had gone absconding, but was arrested afew days later from his relatives house in Govandi. The police had registered a case under section 376 (rape) and 377 ( unnatural offence) of the IPC and under the relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act against Shaikh. Ponder awhile… “Take every failure in your stride and learn how not to fail again. In every failure there is hidden agenda of success. Only you have to solve the puzzle.” — Unknown

A last-ditch plan to attract credibility T

HE Congress party appears to have at last realised that it has to make some desperate, urgent effort to remove the corruption taint which has been sticking to it for the last ten years. A last minute effort is not likely to help much, but the Congress leaders appear to have decided to tackle the subject. In their election manifesto which they released two days ago, they said some of the anti-corruption bills will be enacted as soon as they come to power. This is one of the most unconvincing promises contained in the manifesto. The Congress claims that the manifesto has the voice of the people: What it says is whatever the people wanted has been included in the manifesto. The party is also making promises which it cannot keep: For instance, it is claiming it is providing financial assistance to all. Are they proposing to give doles? And the prime minister, speaking on the budget, said that corruption cannot be wished away, but they will undertake suitable measures to eradicate it. In short, in the manifesto, the Congress has promised the world to all classes of people. It has attempted to build before the people a rosy image of things to come. And it has declared if Narendra Modi becomes the Prime Minister of India, it will be disaster for the country. And perhaps the Congress thinks that the most important message it has put in the manifesto is with regard to secularism. Every leader speaking on the manifesto spoke about the need for India to remain a secular state. Actually, in this attempt to focus attention on secularism, the Congress has subtly attempted to polarise society in the country. It is cleverly bringing in polarisation – to create a divide between various communities. This has been the plan of the SP in Uttar Pradesh. Various communities are told – not directly – about the existence of danger in a society where people follows different faiths. The manifesto of the Congress has included a hidden agenda to bring about polarisation and build its vote bank.

VENTS are taking place in India and the world that need watching. Everyone has to be on the alert, including the Indian people. Ukraine and what is happening there must serve as a warning. It is not just a matter of Russian interests. The West seems wishing to take power in its own hands wherever possible. Writing in The Telegraph for example, K.P. Nayar has raised some important questions. To what extent is the West playing a dirty game? Listen to him. Writes Nayar: “Finally, the secrets tumbling out of Ukraine such as revelations about how regime change was orchestrated in Washington ought to make India sit up. It is not inconceivable that tactics such as those used in Kiev could be used by disaffected elements in restive parts of India – Kashmir, volatile areas in the North East. The possibilities are wide and fearfully large and the potential for outside support for these immense. Where will India turn to in upgrading its intelligence capabilities to cope with such new challenges?”

Revival of Cold War The West had no business interfering in Ukraine, but that is exactly what it has been doing. Writes Nayar: “One result of a revival of the Cold War from Ukraine is that Central Asian governments may be forced to choose between the West and Moscow. India too will then have to adjust its approach to Central Asia”. And here is some more — “A revival of the Cold War mentality in Washington which is in answer to the prayers of America’s military-industrial complex also means for India a return to the geopolitical equations of the 1960s”. It is reasonable to assume that if Narendra Modi becomes prime minister the country will face a terrorist attack within months if not weeks. It is in the nature of the cross-border threats that confront India that such as attack will be designed as a message to the new government. Anuradha M. Chenoy is Professor at the School of International Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University. She says, writing in DNA (March 15) that taped conversations have revealed EU interference in Ukraine. The Ukranian Parliament tried to eliminate a law to protect the use of Russian as an official language in those sectors of the country where it is spoken. ing citizens. Surely the EU wouldn’t do it on its own? According to Chenoy, ‘from the Russian perspective’ the US has supported regime change and instability in Ukraine for some years. An economist, Paul Craig Roberts, is reported to have stated that the US has spent billions in ‘undermining authoritarian but elected regimes in Ukraine. The media in the West seems to be divided as well’. The Asian Age (March 12) carried an article originally written by a British expert Matthew Parris for The Spectator that clearly gives an understanding of what the West (the US, EU and NATO) is up to in Ukraine. Clearly in Ukraine the West wants to do what it did to

MEDIAWATCH M.V. Kamath the Soviet Union in Afghanistan: destroy the Soviet Union, but now, destroy Russia and surround it with western armed forces? Parris has clear advice to give. As he put it: “I would concede the Crimea to Moscow. I would also hesitate before giving any appearance of readiness to take the rest of Ukraine under the wirngs of the West. Politically and economically the country (Ukraine) is a basket case and for Moscow an expensive one. Ukraine has come to rely on massive subsidy, Russia has historically provided this. Why should we be panting down to take the burden on our own shoulders?” And now we have an Indian thinker having his say on the subject. Warning that the “Cold War isn’t back with a vengeance” because “it never went away.” Sunanda K. Datta-Ray wants us to remember what India’s worst enemy, Richard Nixon, once croaked when the Soviet Union collapsed. At that time Nixon said in clear terms: “The time has come for America to reset its geopolitical compass. We have a historic opportunity to change the world”. And what does ‘the world’ consist of?

Meanwhile, one understands that a Londonbased British author and filmmaker is doing a political biography of Modi. The author’s name is Andy Marino. He was interviewed by Hindustan Times (March 16). Q: As a biographer do you feel that you get honest answers to your questions? Ans: As a foreigner I found him to be very good company. Was he honest with me? I have checked and cross-referenced every fact he mentioned and they all correlated. Q: What is it that fascinates you most about Modi? Ans: I don’t think that I have ever come across a better administrator or anybody so completely possessed with enthusiasm for what he does. His brain runs non-stop thinking about ways to improve everything and there’s an incredible energy. Economically it will bring in more foreign investment, opening of markets for new jobs and services and supply-side reforms. And, politically, essentially a change from the colonial-style elite rule”. Hindustan Times (March 16) was editorially very critical of AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal when it said that “while he has crossed boundaries before, in Nagpur he appeared to go berserk as he threatened to set up an inquiry and jail media persons and others if his party came to power”. The paper said that in playing the game Kejriwal “frequently undermines public institutions and constitutional bodies. The long editorial could not have been more damning.

Would India be in the picture? Our politicians should take a lesson from Ukraine and watch for developments in India, especially in Kashmir and the North East. Things are developing very fast in Europe. Datta-Ray points out that NATO’s 12 original members have now spiraled to 28 and adds: “Countries that either border Russia or were formerly under Russian control are now members. Montenegro, Georgia, Bosnia, Herzegovina, Macedonia and Cyprus are waiting to join (the NATO). Small wonder Russia feels hemmed in”. It is important for India to look beyond what’s happened in Ukraine. Should Narendra Modi get elected as prime minister, he will have to get a good team of advisers to keep him informed on international affairs. India will need to know exactly how it has to react to western moves in Eastern Europe.

Srinivasan tasting his own medicine THIS refers to your edit-piece 'Down and hopefully out' and also the report 'Srinivasan exploring legal options' (ADC, Mar. 27). Even at the outset, it needs to be pointed out that dealing with the crafty cricket Czar, is more like the 'Taming of the Shrew' by Shakespeare. He has the knack of wriggling out of incriminating situations which most others would find impossible to get out of. He has tasted power in the very rich BCCI and has expectedly grown a coterie around him so much so that when it comes to the crunch, no one dares to open his mouth. Therefore, the honhourable Apex Court will do well to come out with its firm orders instead of making observations which he will brush aside as mere mosquito-bites. This is the only way to save our cricket. — Dr. V. Subramanyan, Thane

THE writing is on the wall. The activities of the BCCI president and the decorum of the Indian Board come out in open as the Supreme Court directs N. Srinivasan to relinquish his post as President to have a fair inquiry into the IPL 6 match fixing involving CSK. INDIAN cricket is in a total dilemma and the fate of T20 World Cup will see heads roll in the composition of the team as well as coaching staff. The writing seems to be on the wall for India coach Duncan Fletcher. It has been learnt that Fletcher has been given one last opportunity to save his job at the upcoming ICC World T20 in Bangladesh and if he falls short of expectations, his unimpressive stint will finally come to an end. Even as the Indian team led by Mahendra Singh Dhoni left for Bangladesh, Fletcher was meeting BCCI president N. Srinivasan in Chennai. While there has been agreement among several former cricketers that the Zimbabwean has been given a long enough rope to prove his mettle, it is understood that concerns raised by several BCCI working committee members finally forced Srinivasan to give Fletcher the ultimatum. It is notable that Fletcher did not play test cricket to know finer points of the game but still preferred as India's Coach. Fortunately for Ganges river and have his ablutions absolved, cleansed and to purify himself from his involvement in the Gujarat riots. Not that he is responsible for the riots but it is said that when a certain falsehood is repeated ad nauseum it is believed to be true. The spectre of the Gujarat riots must be exorcised. He has been lambasted with such clockwork regularity that poor Modi must now really be under the presumption that he must willy nilly have had a hand in the riots. Jokes apart, Varanasi is also a holy city and what more would you want than for him to begin his journey in national politics on a pious note.

SRINIVASAN, the BCCI President is having a tough time and is being paid in his own coin. In BCCI, things seem to have been replaced by totalitarianism, cronyism and intimidation. Internal BCCI emails seen by this writer provide a fascinating insight into its working and paint a bleak future not only for Indian cricket but the world game now stalked by N. Srinivasan. The BCCI president, despite being mired in controversy, was named as the next ICC chief on February 8. He will take over as chairman in July. If BCCI sneezes, world cricket catches a cold. The sniffles may have just begun. IPL is losing money and Justice Mukul Mudgal's report has exposed a link between the supposed guardian of the game and illegal gambling, the menace that encourages the scourge of matchfixing. Srinivasan is supposed to be whiter than white; his privileged position demands it. Yet his son-in-law, Gurunath Meiyyapan, has been accused of betting on matches involving the that team he managed, the Chennai Super Kings. Srinivasan was against Haroon Lorgat and now he is cleared by ICC for all the charges levelled against him by BCCI. — C.K.S. Maniam, Nerul

and getting closer to NCP’s Vinayak Mete By A Staff Reporter

L

ok Sangram MLA Anil Gote yesterday accused senior BJP leader Gopinath Munde of betraying the aspirations of the Dhangar (Shepherd) community. Gote claimed that he did not get the promised Lok Sabha ticket from the Dhule constituency. Speaking to the media here, he announced that the community will deliberately use the 'None Of The Above (NOTA)' option in this Lok Sabha election wherever there are BJP-Shiv Sena Mahayuti candidates. In a related development, attempts by Munde to draw rebel NCP MLC Vinayak Mete closer to the Mahayuti fold is causing considerable unease within the BJP-Shiv Sena ranks with some senior leaders from both the parties raising questions over the declining political clout of Mete in Beed district. Gote claimed that the BJP had promised to field three candidates for the Lok Sabha

elections from the Dhangar community. However, the party failed to keep its promise of giving him the Lok Sabha ticket from the Dhule constituency. Speaking to the media, a BJP leader on conditions of anonymity, remarked that the BJP had supported Gote while he was incarcerated over his alleged involvement in the fake stamp scam case. Moreover, the Dhule Lok Sabha seat comprises of three assembly segments of Dhule district and three from Nashik district. The Lok Sangram leader has very little political clout in the Dhule segment of the constituency and virtually none in the Nashik segment of the Lok Sabha seat. But more than the Gote allegations, the attempts by Munde to bring rebel NCP MLC Vinayak Mete closer to the Mahayuti fold has led to resentment in the Mahayuti camp. A section of the state BJP leadership feels that Mete, once a protege of Munde has now virtually no political clout in Beed district.

MNS riding piggyback on Modi? By A Staff Reporter

W

ithout taking the name of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) or its leaders, the state BJP unit yesterday lodged a complaint with the Election Commission of India that certain political parties and individuals were trying to lure and misguide the voters by using banners, posters and images of BJP's PM candidate Naren-

dra Modi in their campaign. A complaint to this effect was lodged by state BJP election management committee member Shrikant Bhartiya with the ECI. Bhartiya stated that the party leaders have come across instances of party cadres and individuals related to political parties outside the Mahayuti fold indulging in such acts in the state in the course of the Lok Sabha election campaign.

Beach Bum! Forget about visiting Bali and Hawaii, this summer, explore a number of beautiful beaches without leaving the country. To help you plan your summer vacation, Rhea Dhanbhoora & Dev Goswami tell you about the top beach destinations across India

>> Gokarna beach in Karnataka is frequented by devotees but is more than just a spiritual destination

W

ho doesn’t love the beach? From the sun and sand, to clear blue skies and water sports, beaches are a great holiday destination for the entire family. Whether you want to soak up the sun (don’t forget your sunscreen!) while your children play in the sand or indulge in some seaside activities, there's no reason to plan a holiday abroad, since India is home to several of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Before you plan your vacation this year, take a look at our recommendations for the top beach destinations from across the country.

Visakhapatnam andhra pradesh

When you think of beaches, you will very rarely think of Andhra Pradesh as your go-to destination. However, the Visakhapatnam area is actually a great place to visit. Vishakhapatnam is also known as Vizag and one of the best beaches to visit there is Yarada beach. It's a little out of reach, but if you really want to get there, you can take one of the three road approaches and gain entrance through it from the private property that surrounds it. Because it's a private property, you can rest assured that it's going to be extremely clean and well-

maintained. The second-largest coastline in the country, it is barely 15km away from Visakhapatnam, but the pristine calm will make you feel like it's completely cut off from civilisation. Getting there: This is probably one of the easiest destinations on the list to get to. Vizag is directly connected to Mumbai through both flights and the railway. So, all you need to do is pick your dates and book your tickets.

LiGhthouse Beach kovalam, kerala

Kovalam in Kerala is a must-see destination because it's dotted with several extremely beautiful beaches. They’re clean, with long stretches of sand and gentle waves cascading along the shore. It's a tourist hot spot, but just because it's often buzzing with people doesn't mean you should write it off as a grotesquely populated spot. Make sure you visit the Lighthouse Beach, which is at the southernmost tip of the coastline. It's the most popular, for good reason. Not only are there several hotels and lodges you can stay at that are right on the beach, you can also visit the lighthouse. The view from the top is breathtaking! Getting there: Just like Vizag, you can book direct flight or train tickets to Trivandrum,

>> Don’t forget to visit the lighthouse when you’re at Kovalam beach in Kerala

continued from pg 13 « where Kovalam is located. Once you reach Trivandrum, you can book a taxi to take you to the beaches at Kovalam.

Serenity Beach Pondicherry

Anyone who visits Pondicherry (or Puducherry as it's called) doesn't leave without visiting its spectacularly unspoiled beaches. With bluer than blue waters, soft white sands and palm trees that look like they've been plucked out of a film, this is a great beach destination. While Serenity Beach isn't as popular as the other beaches in and around the place, it's extremely peaceful and the perfect place to soak up a little of the culture because of the fishing village that surrounds it. It's also a popular surfing spot, but make sure you take a guide/ surfing instructor with you since the sea can get quite choppy. It's a short stretch and not very touristy, but it's a great place to visit when you're in the area. Getting there: There is no direct air connection to Pondicherry from Mumbai, though there is a train that you can board from Dadar. However, it will take you around 34-35 hours. If you don't want to spend so many hours travelling, you can catch a flight to Chennai (which is the closest airport) and then take a bus or book a taxi.

Om Beach

Gokarna, Karnataka Gokarna is a very popular pilgrimage spot, but it's not only the devout who will find peace here. There are several secluded beaches that make for scenic destinations, perfect for summer travel, that won't burn a hole in your wallet to get to. Located around 8km from the main town, it's absolutely breathtaking. The sand stretches for miles and there are several water sport activities, including surfing, water-skiing and parasailing that you can partake of when you're there. Getting there: Trains and buses are the most direct way to reach Gokarna. But, if you'd like to go there by air, you'll have to take a flight to Dabolim in Goa, which is 140km from Gokarna. You can then take a taxi to reach Gokarna. The adventurous can also make a road-trip of the 735km by taking the Mumbai-Kochi highway.

PalOlem Goa

Of course, we weren't going to miss out on Goa! Off late, you'll hear several complaints about how the state has become oversaturated with travellers; but if you choose right, you can still have a memorable trip. If you don't want to miss out on all the fun and

parties that Goa is known for, but want to avoid the mess that Baga has become, head to Palolem. The beach is scenic and you will also be able to do all the touristy stuff. The best part about Palolem is that if you do get bored of the crowds, you can just walk over to the more isolated Coco Beach that is located nearby. Getting there: Bus, train, air and road... Goa is connected very well to Mumbai. Once in Goa, you can take a taxi to reach Palolem, or you can board a bus going towards Canacona Bus Stand and get off there. From there, you can catch an auto-rickshaw to the beach.

KaShid

near alibaug, maharashtra Don't have more than a day on hand, but still want to escape the city? Head to Kashid, which is around 150km from Mumbai. Kashid Beach is so unexplored that you won't find too many accommodation or even eating options. So, it is best for a day trip; but if you do want a weekend or twoday trip you can stay and eat at Alibaug, which is around 35km away from Kashid. The beach itself is quite clean and deserted, making it a good option for a secluded destination. Getting there: Kashid is just 150kms from Mumbai, so you can either drive down or take a ferry from Gateway of India to Alibaug and then take a taxi to Kashid.

VaGatOr Goa

Beautiful, secluded, laid-back — these are adjectives that best describe Vagator Beach. Located next to the extremely famous tourist hotspot, Anjuna, Vagator will make >> Palolem beach lagoon in Goa is a great place to head to for an activity fuelled getaway

you see why Goa and beaches go hand-inhand. The beautiful beach is cut off from the regular Goa crowd and when you go there, you shouldn't miss out on watching the sunset. The beach is perfect if all you want to do is relax with a group of friends or your family — but do not visit it during the chaotic New Year's week. Getting there: Follow the same drill you would for Palolem. Reaching Vagator won't be a problem at all as its quite famous and so, connectivity is good.

>> One of the most beautiful beaches in Goa, Vagator is a serene escape

naGOa diu

The quiet Nagoa beach in Diu is guaranteed to leave you feeling relaxed and happy. The horse-shoe shaped beach has a perfect balance between water-sports and the empty stretches of sand. You can take part in a number of adventure sports and at the same time get a sense of relaxation. Getting there: The easiest way to reach Diu is by taking the only daily flight, operated by JetKonnect. If you want to go by rail, you'll have to get off at Veraval and cover the 90kms beautiful waters. Beach lover or not, this is a to Diu by road. destination you just have to visit. Elephant Beach is also very pretty, so visit that on your way to or from the beach. Radhanagar beach was named the Best Beach in Asia by Time in 2004, so you don't want to skip this one. Getting there: Andaman and Nicobar Islands is a destination that you should plan to visit in advance, paying attention to the minutest details. Sadly, there are no direct flights to the islands. hen was the last time you walked into an art show and came out a completely different person? Maybe its time to do so this week, by visiting Kamalnayan Bajaj Art Gallery to see Rachna Toshniwal's first solo show, Entering The Now. In an attempt to involve and intertwine the art of other artists along with hers, Rachna will work with veteran artist, Surendra Rao and a visiting Belgian artist, Kris Vandenberghe at the gallery, to make art by exchanging techniques and giving each other the joy of sharing creative spaces. As Toshniwal expresses herself through the process of painting, she also explores the complications of

emotional threads that connect the self within as well as that of others. She rightfully explains, “Rarely do emotional threads run parallel in my life, they tend to intersect, overlap, entangle, loop and jump — entwining my being. Now, the tug of merging, separating and connecting pull strongly at my entangled existence — vying for attention, breathing room, space; wanting to be seen!” Through this collection Rachna has found a different language that is helping her take a radical step towards change. She says, “The untying is an unraveling, but not of the disintegrating kind. Instead, it is an unfolding, a deciphering and decoding of the

one knot at Ia time >> The subtle decor lends the spa classy touch

nch by Inch is situated in a quiet lane off Yari Road. Walk into it's gates, festooned with banners and you find yourself at their openair café. Walk past it into the foyer to be greeted by their spa section. While the rest of the facility is bustling with activity, make your way through the heavy glass door that cordons off the spa and you can’t help but feel an instant sense of calm. The small sitting area is dotted with colourful cushions and wooden trinkets. As you browse through the menu, you notice Thai Privilege Spa emblazoned on the wall. They have a tie-up with the Thailand based spa chain and are the first to bring the range of therapies and techniques to India. The therapies range from the aromatherapy massage (`3,000), to a stress-releasing head massage (`1,500). They also have a jet-lag massage, sports healing massage and one for children (`2,000). The actual facility is a maze of sorts, but one you'd actually like to

spend some time in. There are plenty of rooms, ranging from single occupancy to double (for couples treatments). Some rooms contain just a bed, while others have steam and shower cubicles as well as a jacuzzi. They also have a foot washing area and a row of single-seater chairs for foot treatments. The décor features dark wood, dull metallic mosaics and dim lighting. After a welcome drink made with tamarind, jaggery and lemon, I was ushered in for my foot reflexology treatment (`750) for 30 minutes. It started with a tamarind foot scrub followed by an intensive foot massage and reflexology session. The masseuse hit all the pressure points correctly and was extremely receptive to how my body was responding. The good thing about the spa is that they have several treatments in sessions ranging from 30-90 minutes and packages that last up to five and a half hours. So, you can pick something that

suits your budget and time frame. While the tension sought it's way out of my feet, gentle music played in the background and the heavy door ensures that all noises stay out. I also tried the Shoulder and Back Massage (`1,200 for 30 minutes) and again, the skilled masseuse ensured that stressed, tense and wound up muscles were restored to their natural state. I have a back problem and was happy to find out, that the initial client information form I had filled out had been taken into consideration during my massage. Unfortunately, as I drifted off to my happy place, the appointed hour was up. Although some of their therapies are pricey (especially the packages), it’s worth your time and money to head here when you need some serious R&R. where J P Road, Off Yari Road, Versova, Andheri (W) contact 26365555/ 26341973

Smaaash is no longer a place just for sports lovers. With the launch of their animatronics-based Hoopla Zoo, they have become a place for kids to have an adventure. Dev Goswami tells you more >> The penguins, though not as exciting as the other animals, are super-cute

>> You won’t initially notice the crocodile, but will give you a start when you do

S

maaash built its reputation as a sports lover's destination, but it's about much more than that. With the launch of their dinning restaurant-bar (Bazinga; review on next page) and the Hoopla Zoo, they are aiming to become a family destination. The zoo brings us the technology of animatronics — something we previously saw only on the big screen. Standing outside the cute entrance to the zoo (a stone bridge over a tiny water body), I was slightly sceptical. I thought of the next few minutes as a literal walk in the park, with animated animals and birds at random junctures. However, the first step is enough to dispel the notion. You're greeted by a large, growling bear, moving his head in a menacing (or so I thought!) manner. To be honest, my heart was in my mouth for a second... or two! Before you get your bearings back to try and

answer the question, ‘where am I?!’, you will come across a cleverly hidden snake. By now, I was having serious doubts about my initial impression of Hoopla Zoo being nothing more than a themed play-area. This wasn't helped by my encounter with a rhinoceros, who, with its constant nodding, made me hesitant to pass by him. It was probably because of this hesitance that I was informed that all the animals are made using kid-friendly materials and when you touch the figures, you'll find that they're as soft as foam. During my continued exploration of Hoopla Zoo, I also came across a crocodile, a camel, a great bald eagle, a parrot and two really cute penguins. However, the best attraction was undoubtedly the dinosaur. Located right at the end of the zoo, it is quite scary and constantly sprays out cold water, which when combined

>> The lion is one of the best models at the Hoopla Zoo with its sudden movements and its roars will literally give you the heebie-jeebies. Since the exit was a small tunnel (in their defense, it’s made for children) I had to turn back and take another tour. The zone has slides, swings, nets, bridges and tunnels, all of which add to the fun quotient. Each animal also has placards next to it, which list out general information regarding the animal/ species. Hoopla Zoo was a surprise for me. The technology is amazing and the execution is perfect. Children are going to love this attraction, so you should definitely take them there. The zoo is priced at `350 on weekdays and `450 on Saturdays and Sundays. where Smaaash, Kamala Mills Compound, Lower Parel contact www.smaaash.in

S

maaash is known as a place where you can go to enjoy a range of attractions and games (they have some really, really great ones — the F1 car simulator being a favourite), while you sip on pints of beer. This was the impression even though they have a well-stocked bar. It’s that impression they're aiming to change and is the reason they've introduced Bazinga — a restaurant-bar that is slightly secluded from the usually boisterous atmosphere of Smaaash. The first thing that strikes you is that the thick glass walls drown out almost all the sounds coming from the gaming arena but just lets the music in, so that your meal isn't spent in deafening silence. The restaurant has been done up neatly with bright lights, yet has a sports charm to it with large screens to showcase matches and posters of famous sports-persons who’d visited Smaaash.

H

eading to Chembur seems like a dire prospect after a long day and there's usually no light at the end of the tunnel, especially because there isn't much to head to Chembur for. So, when we traipsed there to check out n Bar & Grill, we weren't really expecting a spectacular meal. The décor is nice, but a little over-the-top in certain aspects. The faux-leather sofas and candle-lit tables in an already well-lit restaurant are not necessary. While the round, booth style tables and overhead lights are a welcome change from straight-backed chairs (they give you the much needed elbow room that most restaurants lack), the brown and gold opulence gets a little heavy on the eyes after a while. The USP of n Bar & Grill, although they may not advertise it, is that they serve Indian food, plated European style. This is done to help people eat their favourite foods without having to share and also to increase its aesthetic appeal, which I could vouch for by browsing through the tablet menu alone. They start with an Indian-ised amuse-bouche, a bite-sized hors d’œuvre, served complimentary after you've placed your order. The spiced chass and phyllo pastry filled with channa was tasty, but I’ve had similar at other fine-dine Indian restaurants, so it didn't blow me away. They recommend trying the Salt & Vinegar wafers with your drinks and although some people may find them a little too salty, I couldn't get enough of the thin, crispy wafers. The Galouti Kebab (`475) is melt-in-the-mouth and an added bonus are the soft naan triangles that they were served on. Don't attempt to use cutlery, the bite-sized treats crumble to bits if you touch them with a fork. The Sauth aur Imli ka Jhinga (`795) was just alright and the Akhroth Murgh Seekh Kebab (`355) was a little too dry for my taste. The Dahi Kebab (`295) upped the ante again — soft, with just the right

hint of garlic. The Kache Gosht Ka Biryani (`495) was flavourful, but run-off-the-mill, so I focused on polishing off the Aloo Lollipops (`295), which are a must-try. Although their menu consists of several interesting looking continental dishes and French cheeses, all their recommended dishes are Indian, which makes me wonder whether it's because they make these better, or because they don't have faith in Indian customers being able to appreciate varied cuisine — both of which I hope aren't the case. The one dish that stole the spotlight though was the unassuming Dal Makhani (`355). While we didn't give it a second glance when it was first brought to the table, the dal, cooked for 12 hours, is utterly, butterly delicious. Have it with the flaky kulchas. Drink wise, there are several options. The tequila based Red Pigeon (`495) was delicious — a large drink filled with pomegranate bits and flavoured with cherry and guava. The Samurai (`495) was good as well, with tart raspberries and a salt rim. They also make melon and cherry liqueur in-house. The Gulab Jamun took me back to my childhood with its spin on the Parsi doodh-puff with its foamy milk froth topping. The Caramelised Parle-G ice cream(`175), made in-house, is delicious if you love your glucose biscuits very, very cold! Although the Decadent Callebaut Chocolate Mousse (`255) was made with good chocolate (you can taste the difference), I wouldn't order it again. At the end of your meal, you're going to be surprised by an Indian version of cake pops. Confused? So were we! Think of sweet paan, cake crumbs and delicious dark chocolate. It sounds strange, but was quite yummy. I’d visit again, but only if I were in the area. However, for an otherwise extremely barren Chembur, n Bar & Grill is a much-needed fine-dining restaurant.

>> The Mexican Chicken Burger was dry, while the Long Beach Iced Tea (inset) was tangy, refreshing and delicious Try the Long Island Iced Tea (`490) and its modified version, Long Beach Iced Tea (`490). Both drinks were delicious — but we prefered the Long Beach Iced Tea, with its tangy hint of cranberry. We also tried the Whisky Sour, Singapore Sling and Margarita (`450 each), of which the stiff Whisky Sour was the best. We started with Manchow Soup (`150), which, though nothing exceptional, is perfect when you're ravenous. The Smaaash Nachos (`375) are flavourful, but would have tasted better with more of the creamy cheese sauce. We then tried the Chicken Sausage Oriental Style (`350) — sausage pieces cooked in onion gravy, with spices. The dish had a strong hit of pepper which took the flavour away from the sausages. The Spicy Chicken Tikka Pizza was made quite well but the flavours didn't justify a price tag of `425. Our last dish of the night was the Mexican Chicken Burger (`300), which could have been much better if they had they added a bit more of what was already there — sauces. The lack of adequate sauces made the burger a bit dry and chewy, but that being said, it tasted quite good. Bazinga does not stand out on its own. It is an experience that has to be combined with Smaaash for you to really have a good time. That doesn't mean that they can't be better — most of the issues that I had with their food was just a lack or an excess of something. Their drinks however are pretty amazing and should not be missed out on. You should certainly pop into Bazinga if you're at Smaaash, but the restaurant doesn't justify going to Smaaash just to try it... yet.

WhAt’s Cooking? The Little Door has introduced an all-day menu and is now open all day. We tell you more If you’ve been regretting the fact that The Little Door was only open during the evening, it’s time to rejoice. The quaint bar & restaurant is now open for lunch and they’ve added all-day breakfast options to their menu which includes eggs prepared in a number of ways. The menu also has signature soups by Chef Nikhil Kedar. But, that’s not it! Bring Back a souvenir

While picking up souvenirs for family and friends, don't forget to buy boxes of dates, date chocolates or date sweets. Camel shaped magnets and show pieces dominate most gift shops. You can even buy bakery products from the famous Muscat bakery shops, which offer

some melt-in-the-mouth cakes, biscuits, Omani halwa, bread and confectionery. Mutrah Souk is a great place to shop for clothes, spices, ittar (perfume), silver jewellery, show pieces and handicrafts. The main shopping area is situated in Al Qurum’s commercial area, however, shopping malls are spread out through the city, housing world class brands.

hen some trips come to an end, you're left with such great memories that it tears you up to have to leave a place that is so rich in natural beauty, culture and welcoming hospitality. Muscat, the capital of Oman, is one such place. The beautiful port city, dominated by trade, is as cosmopolitan as it can be; inhabited by people from across the world — primarily Indians, Persians, Baloochs, Philipinos, East Africans, Zanzibars and a few Europeans. While visiting Muscat, remember that they use two kinds of currency in the city — the Omani Rial and Baiza. The first sight of Muscat is in the form of the warm waters of the Arabian Sea and the surrounding peaks of the AlHajar mountains. As we drove down from the airport, the city welcomed us with its clean roads, green parks, flower gardens and several low-lying houses, with an old-world charm that was enhanced by their white and pastel hues. We soon realised that Muscat has practically no skyscrapers. The city is dotted with mosques, the most popular being the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, which is an architectural jewel. Other popular mosques here include the Ruwi mosque and Zawawi mosque. Sultan Qaboos, the autocratic ruler here, has made way for development where trade is concerned. Ancient forts, protected by canons, are still operated by the military and the palace is the seat of Oman's government. The Indian population in Muscat owns many of the popular shops and we also came across two Hindu temples — a Shiva and Krishna temple, frequented by with a host of Hindu devotees. Muscat is home to some stunning museums as well. Oman’s National museum is a jewel in its crown, where you can soak in its well-preserved, rich, cultural heritage. The popular Qurum Beach is strikingly peaceful and you can even fish there. And, if you want to try activities such as, swimming, snorkeling, water sports, have a barbecue or just laze around, visit Qantab Beach. Dolphin fans should head to Marina Bandar, where you can watch spinner dolphins playing

in the water. You can also hop onto one of the speedboats, which take eight to ten people to the middle of the sea to feed them. You’ll find plenty of foreigners, expats and locals trying their hand at scuba diving and with a host of experienced divers around, it is highly unlikely that you will go home without learning the basics. A drive around the Mutrah Corniche and Harbour was a must-do on our list as it holds vital port trading routes. Thankfully, the old city hasn't been replaced by fancy buildings or newer constructions. Standing guard over Muscat’s harbour are the massive Mirani and Jalali forts (overlooking the Royal Palace), built when Oman was a major military base in the 16th century. Ruwi is a commercial hub that includes a massive marketplace, with several jewellery shops, cloth merchants, craft shops, grocery stores, export goods and local designer malls. The Ruwi market almost seemed like a miniature India in the Gulf! The Muscat Clock Tower is the oldest monument in modern Oman and it showcases the Sultanate’s commitment to modernisation. The headquarters of Omantel — Oman's Public Telecommunication wing, can be seen from this landmark. Al Khuwair marks the entrance to the Ministries Street, which houses all the important ministries of Oman. If you are the adventurous sort, try dune bashing in the desert (Wahiba sands) — about two hours away from the city by road. You can also check out the Turtle Resort which is a hit with most kids. It’s a turtle nesting ground where you can watch turtles hatch or lay eggs. People here love traditions, which is why the Muscat Festival is held here for four weeks every year, showcasing the country’s heritage, culture and arts at several outdoor venues around the city. The festival is a mix of poetry recitals, folk music, dance and acrobatic acts along with fireworks displays. Football is a favorite here too. Young boys are often seen playing around their houses and cheer for the national team at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex during the games. The people of Oman love their food and you’ll find several restaurants serving cuisines from all over the world. Coffee is also popular, so the city hosts plenty of coffee shops for coffee addicts. Typical Omani food is heavily flavoured with herbs, spices, garlic and lime and has Arabic, Indian and African influences. Also popular is the Omani halwa (made with dates and sprinkled with dry fruits). With beautiful landscapes and lovely people, the only drawback is that there is no rail/ metro so you have to travel by road or by air. However, this is hardly a reason for you to shy away from exploring this exciting destination!

Markets Flare

NSE India: CNX Nifty — Daily Market Report for: Friday (March 28, 2014) (Based on the activity of the previous trading day) by Dominic Rebello

REVIEW OF THE PREVIOUS DAY: The Nifty rose moderately on Thursday (March 27, 2014) a net 40.35 points (0.61%) and closed at the 6641 point level. The market opened up with a gap at the 6613 points level. It then declined and registered the day’s low at the 6599 points level at 9.16 a.m. The index then rose sharply into the green and turned into a range bound movement until 2.35 p.m. It then rose further and registered the day’s high at the 6673 points level at 2.58 p.m. The index then declined and turned into a range bound movement until closing at the day. The Nifty moved in a range of 74 points and closed above the psychologically important 6600 points level for the second consecutive session. Sentiment was bullish and amongst the 50 Nifty stocks 35 were gainers, while 15 were losers. Substantial buying was seen in PSU, consumer durables, oil & gas and realty stocks, while some selling was witnessed in healthcare, IT and metal stocks. TECHNICAL ANALYSIS: Volume: Volume (Qty shares) increased 23.65%. This change is substantial and indicates a wide participation by investors. Market Breadth: Overall Market Breadth on the NSE was positive. Amongst all the traded stocks, 909 were gainers, 603 were losers and 61 remained unchanged. Slow Stochastic Indicator: The Slow Stochastic Oscillator is in the over-bought zone. The Slow K line in the Stochastic Oscillator has dropped below the slow D line (negative and a sell signal). However, such signals are considered invalid in the over-bought zone.

RSI Indicator: The RSI is above the 60 level and is now rising (positive if it continues). MACD Indicator: The MACD is above zero and is rising (positive if it continues). It is above its 9-day Average (positive).

Overall Market Strength/Weakness: The indicators and oscillators discussed here are indicating a strong market with a positive bias.

Support Levels: For short-term traders the immediate main support is at the 6338 points level. The next support is at the 6136 points level. Resistance Levels: The immediate main resistance at the 6621 points level was crossed above yesterday. The next resistance is at the 6693 points level.

Pivot Point Analysis: For intra-day traders the support and resistance levels are calculated according to the pivot point theory and are: Pivot point = 6638 (This is the level where the trend is likely to change during intra-day). Support (1) = 6603. Support (2) = 6564. Resistance (1) = 6677. Resistance (2) = 6713. OUTLOOK FOR TODAY: On Japanese candlestick patterns the index after having formed a doji pattern (indicating indecisiveness amongst investors) has formed a small white body candle on substantially higher volumes. This is positive and indicates that the bias has shifted towards the buy side of the market. Further, the index is above its 5, 15, 25 and 200 days moving averages and all the four averages are rising and also positively trended. Moreover, the index has crossed above a major resistance level at the 6621 points level. The velocity parameters too indicate strength. All these indicate a positive bias and the possibility of a further up move unfolding. Investors are advised to hold long positions.

Work with strict stop losses on all positions

ADX Indicator & DI Lines: The +DI line is above the –DI line and both lines are diverging (positive if it continues). The ADX is rising while the Market Index is rising, which indicates that the present up trend is increasing in strength. MOVING AVERAGES (TREND INDICATORS) The index: Is above its 5-day average (at 6582) Positive. Is above its 15-day average (at 6534) Positive. Is above its 25-day average (at 6416) Positive. Is above its 200-day average (at 6030) Positive. All the four averages are positively trended. Positive.

MARKET VIEW “Nifty gained significantly in the March series. An initial up move in the index was followed by a period of consolidation. The series ended on a positive note with the index testing 6650 levels. Rollover in the index is not very aggressive. This could result in profit booking / consolidation for the April series. Options concentration for April is seen at 6700 call and 6400 put strikes. We remain positive on the markets and advice accumulation on any meaningful corrections. IT stocks can be accumulated gradually for a turnaround from current levels. We remain positive on select Energy and BFSI stocks amongst others.” — Sahaj Agrawal, Deputy Vice President- Derivatives Research, Kotak Securities "In continuation to prevailing uptrend, markets were seen extending their northward journey on Thursday as well. The benchmark index, Nifty, gained more than half a percent amid choppiness on last day of the March F&O expiry. Overall sentiments remained up-beat on rating agency Moody’s report, which said that the sharp fall in India's current account deficit (CAD), will limit its vulnerability to global financial market volatility, though high inflation remains a major risk. With every passing day, Nifty has been forming a new life-time high and it has finally touched the resistance barrier of 6650 today. Hence, it’s advisable for traders to lock in gains and uphold stock specific trading approach for the next session." — Jayant Manglik, President-retail distribution, Religare Securities March expiry has proved to be one of the best in recent times with indices hitting new life time highs in March series. The mid-cap segment too participated to an extent with many stocks hitting 52-week highs during this series. March Nifty rollover’s stood at ~52% below the average percentage rollover in the previous two expiries. However, contract wise, rolls were close to ~1.8cr that is on the higher side compared to the previous two expiries. — Amar Ambani, Head of Research, IIFL

15 % of top 500 companies could face severe distress and loan defaults, says India Ratings By A Business Reporter

A

n Interest rate hike by the Reserve Bank in the short-term will push more corporates over the "default cliff", which can force up to 15 % of top 500 companies in severe distress and loan defaults, India Ratings warned today. "Any further interest rate hike to push corporates over default cliff...Any interest rate hike in the next three to six months may wither even the signs of green shoots," it said, arguing for rates to be kept on hold till September. RBI is scheduled to announce monetary policy on Tuesday. It is widely believed that the central bank is likely to leave the rates unchanged as the core inflation remains sticky, even though overall

inflation rates have been trending down. The report said a rate hike of either 0.25 to 0.50 % by RBI in the next two quarters will push the number of stressed companies in the BSE500 companies by 14-15 %. The credit rating agency said its analysis of BSE-500 companies suggests that the stress on the balance sheet debt will grow to 16 % in case of rate hike from the 15 % in December last. Analysts expect RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan to hold rates at the review, given that there has been some cooling in the consumer price based, or retail inflation, and the February's 8.1 % is close to the RBI target of having it at 8 % by January 2015. However, some challenges persist in the form of recent instances of unseasonal rains as well as a likelihood

of a rainfall deficit in some areas -both of which will push up prices. The El Nino factor may also be looked into by RBI. At the last review on January 28, Rajan unexpectedly went in for a 0.25 % hike in the repo rate. On reports of a likely improvement in the economy in the recent months, the ratings agency said that this is yet to translate into credit metrics. "Credit metrics continue to deteriorate, although at a much slower rate than during FY11-FY13," it said. It also said the interest rate transmission has improved since last August. On the upcoming elections, it said the last six general elections observed a spike in consumer inflation post- elections and conceded that there may be pressures to hike the rates in the next 12-18 months.

BUSINESS BRIEFS Aviation Stocks Soar

Aviation stocks edged higher yesterday - led by Jet Airways which gained over 3 per cent - following RBI extending the period for overseas borrowings for airlines to next March and the Competition Appellate Tribunal dismissing a plea against the Jet-Etihad deal. The Reserve Bank had yesterday extended the deadline for the aviation sector to raise funds through external commercial borrowings till March 2015, a move that provided relief to the sector facing cash-crunch. As per the earlier guidelines, the scheme was initially valid till December 31, 2013. That apart, the Competition Appellate Tribunal today dismissed the appeal challenging fair trade watchdog CCI's approval for the Rs 2,060 crore Jet-Etihad deal, Reacting to the developments, shares of Jet Airways, jumped 7.04 per cent to touch an intra-day high of Rs 237.85 on the BSE. At the end of the trading session the stock was quoted at Rs 228.85, up 3.09 per cent from its previous closing price. Similarly the SpiceJet counter opened on a bullish note at Rs 13.32, then gained further ground and touched an intra-day high of Rs 14.05 on the BSE. Market analysts said the jump was largely a reaction to the RBI move of extending the ECB borrowing window. Moreover, Jet Airways counter also gathered momentum after the favourable decision from the Compat, which dismissed Former Air India Executive Director Jitendra Bhargava's plea against Jet-Etihad deal. Bhargava had filed the appeal questioning the decision of CCI to approve the Jet-Etihad deal without carrying out a detailed assessment. The tribunal's ruling would come as a relief for Jet and Etihad as the deal has run into various regulatory hurdles.

‘Main Tera Hero’ stars travel in unregistered cars

T

HE cast of the upcoming film Main Tera Hero, comprising of Varun Dhawan, Nargis Fakhri and Ileana D'Souza ran into a spot of trouble while promoting their film in Indore. Apparently, the trio was travelling in a convoy of three BMW's when they were stopped by the flying squad of the transport department, under suspicion that arose because of the fake number plates on two of the three cars. The convoy was stopped at the Raddison crossing to check the illegal number plates on the cars. On interrogating the drivers of the car, the officials found out that the cars were not registered as the drivers could not produce the registration papers. Before seizing the two cars, they asked the actors to get down and sit in the third car and leave. On further inquiry, it was found that the cars were demo vehicles. was taken against the actors.

“Vrajendra Gaur 'saab' was a very gifted writer. I miss an eminent writer like him who could write the same scene in so many different styles. We miss his august presence today. He was a very dear friend of mine. He also wrote many films for my wife Saira Banu”. Actor Dharamendra, for whom he wrote a few films reminisces: “Vrajendra Gaur saab was a very jovial, friendly and simple person despite being one of the topmost writers of Hindi films. I had the good fortune of working with him in a few films that he wrote. He was very gifted and a rare talent indeed. Today anyone who picks up a pen calls himself a writer, but Gaur 'saab' was a class apart” For his achievements Gaur has found a place in Britain’s biography of famous people – ‘Who’s Who’.

‘Jal’ is an important release for you. Yes. I am on tenterhooks right now and praying that the film will be a success at the box office because I have worked very hard for it.

What is the story of ‘Jal’? ‘Jal’ is about the specially endowed persons who are called water diviners who can whiff the source of water just by looking at the land to help build wells and bore wells especially in villages, arid areas and drought affected areas.

Did you have any reference point for your character? Yes. In fact I have interacted with such persons on my family-owned land when we had to dig bore wells. How did you like working with director Girish Malik? He is an actor himself so he enacts the entire scenes for us actors and he is passionately into film making, totally immersed in his art and comes prepared on the sets. The fact that the film has won acclaim in Busan Film Festival and IFFI Goa speaks volumes about him. Who are the leading ladies in the film? Half German and half Russian

model Saidah Jules plays a journalist who wants to make a documentary on me, Kriti Kulhari who plays my love interest and Tannishtha Chatterjee. Ravi Gossain, a stage actor has a supporting part.

Where was the film shot? Most of the film was shot in Kutch.

Has the appreciation for ‘Shaadi Ke Side Effects’ helped you? Yes. I am getting more offers and people respect me now as an actor. What next? I have a film called ‘Tere Mere Sapne’coming up in May.

Ayushmann to endorse Pizza Hut? A

YUSHMANN Khurrana is one of the hotshot meteors to have hit the galaxy of Bollywood and is surely here to stay. His talent combined with his good looks and down to earth personality is what we feel is the secret of his 'meteoric' rise in tinsel town. In a place where the mere utterance of the word 'sperm; unfailingly raised many eyebrows, here is a man who went ahead and made his cinematic debut in 'Vicky Donor', a film which was all about sperms and its donations! That's Ayushmann for you.Now that he is a permanent 'sitaara' in the sky of Bollywood, it's needless to say that he is bound to be the darling of the producers as well as the FMCG brand managers. According to reliable sources, Ayushmann is now all set to be the brand ambassador of the pizza major, Pizza Hut. The official announcement of the same is awaited.

So, when Amol Gupte planned to launch the trailer of his latest film by the same name 'Hawaa Hawaai', who better than Sridevi herself to do the honours. That's why Sridevi will now be seen launching the trailer of Gupte's film.Buzz is that, Sridevi was initially supposed to do a special number for the film, although there hasn't been any kind of confirmation or announcement about the same.

He added that they have approached Aditi Rao Hydari and are hopeful about her consent. The locales of this film, which he plans to roll out by the first week of May, will include Mumbai and in South India.

Kangana confirms doing Sujoy Ghosh’s next A

CTRESS Kangana Ranaut has replaced Vidya Balan in Sujoy Ghosh's next film after the latter opted out of the project. "I would be doing the film with Sujoy. I am excited about it. It is a suspense thriller and beyond this I cannot reveal anything," Kangana said here on Wednesday night. Reportedly, Kangana will play a 35-year-old mother to a 14-year-old paralytic girl in the film which is ap-

parently titled 'Durga Rani Singh'. Earlier, Sujoy of 'Kahaani' fame had roped in Vidya for the role, but Kangana joined the project after she walked out. Kangana is happy with the response she garnered for her last release 'Queen', which is directed by Vikas Bahl. "We had not expected this kind of appreciation... We are overwhelmed. We are thankful to the audience for this love for the film," Kangana said.

AFTER sharing the Miss India stage in 1994, former beauty queens Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Sushmita Sen may soon share screen space too. It was earlier reported that Aishwarya may mark her comeback with adman Prahlad Kakkar's directorial debut 'Happy Anniversary', opposite her husband Abhishek Bachchan. The couple has reportedly liked the script and is presently going through it. Now it is learnt that Kakkar has also approached Sushmita to play a key role in the movie. Sources claim that Sush has loved the role and if all goes well then she will soon sign on the dotted line. Prahlad too has confirmed the reports. While Sen's character will be that of a woman caught in a bad marriage, who eventually breaks free, Aishwarya's character will start off as a 21-year-old. The film is being produced by Gaurang Doshi and it will deal with marital issues.

SC proposes Srinivasan’s removal, suggests Gavaskar as BCCI Prez

The first mistake was to have allowed Srinivasan to buy Chennai Super Kings. There is conflict of interest. He should not have been allowed to buy CSK at that time. The SC has given just one day and it has said it will pass its interim order tomorrow. So there is no time to call an emergency meeting of the Board. Whatever the SC says in its order tomorrow, we will have to abide by it. There is no other way. RAVI SAWANT, VICE-PRESIDENT, BCCI

N

EW DELHI: In a big setback to BCCI President N Srinivasan, the Supreme Court proposed his replacement by Sunil Gavaskar and suspension of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) along with Rajasthan Royals (RR) from IPL 7 till the pendency of case of betting and spot fixing scandal before it. The court said it is intending to bar CSK, owned by India Cements, which is promoted by Srinivasan, and RR, whose players and team officials are allegedly involved in the scandal, from participating in the IPL 7 tournament slated to begin from April 16. A bench headed by Justice A K Patnaik proposed the name of veteran cricketer and commentator Sunil Gavaskar to head the Board during the pendency of the case in the apex court. The bench asked the Board to give its response by tomorrow on its proposals after which it will pass an interim order. The bench also proposed to pass an order barring India Cements officials from getting involved with the functioning of BCCI after senior counsel Harish Salve, appearing for Cricket Association of Bihar, pointed out that many such officials are at present part of BCCI team. Salve also raised questions on the conduct of captain of Indian Cricket Team, M S Dhoni, who is also vice president of India Cements, saying that he is guilty of corrupt practices. At the beginning of the proceedings, BCCI placed before the apex court its proposal and assured that it will initiate disciplinary proceedings against persons concerned on the basis of Supreme Court-appointed Mudgal committee's report. BCCI, which was rapped day before yesterday by the apex court, came out with the proposal saying that it agrees to conduct proper probe in the IPL betting and spot fixing scandal.

MODI BACKS MANOHAR, WANTS SUSPENSION OF IPL 7 MUMBAI: Backing his one-time nemesis Shashank Manohar over his scathing views that the cash-rich IPL has lost some of its credibility, former chairman of the T20 League Lalit Modi has said the upcoming season of the tournament needs to be suspended to clean up the game. "I completely agree with Mr Shashank Manohar and his observations on the fact that the serious allegations regarding betting, spotfixing and match-fixing are (sic) all seriously tarnished the image of the game and importantly, the fans and the public at large are slowly but surely starting to lose faith in the Indian Premier League in particular and game at large," said Modi, based now in London, in a statement. "Thus, as I mentioned yesterday [Wednesday] in one of my tweets the biggest and most important task ahead of the BCCI now would be to win back the hearts and faith of the fans. And that in my mind can be

Beyond this, I can't comment on a matter which is subjudice. But the situation is no different for a cricketer. It's nothing new. Whatever is happening in cricket, we can see in the society also. Of course, we need to tackle this and clean up the game. ANIL KUMBLE

The Supreme Court has proposed that BCCI chief be replaced by Gavaskar. done only by ensuring that the BCCI promote what should be a clean game of cricket," stated the man whose brainchild was IPL. "Given the above context and the current goings-on, I think it only right that until the faith of the people in the integrity of the game is restored, the IPL tournament for the year 2014 should be suspended." Season seven of IPL is set to be held from April 16 with the first part of the event scheduled in UAE be-

cause of the general elections in the country. Former BCCI chief Manohar had on Wednesday issued a media statement demanding the upcoming season of IPL be suspended and all IPL matches be investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation. "The Supreme Court's observation is that there are very, very serious allegations made in the report (about IPL spot-fixing) and unless the BCCI president (N Srinivasan)

steps down, no fair probe can be conducted," Manohar had said. "I had said long back, when the scandal broke, that all IPL matches should be investigated. I feel that a thorough probe needs to be done by CBI as the canvas of the activities extends throughout the country. In view of the serious allegations, regarding betting, spot-fixing and match-fixing, the public at large has lost it's faith in IPL games," Manohar had stated yesterday.

Gavaskar is happy to take the BCCI top job

N

EW DELHI: The Supreme Court proposed Sunil Gavaskar's name as replacement for N Srinivasan as BCCI President and the batting legend said he will be "honoured" and "happy" to adhere to the directives of the highest court of the land. "First and foremost, if the highest court suggests something, you have to do so but that has to be on record. I am currently contracted with BCCI as a commentator. But if Supreme Court wants me to do that, I will do it," Gavaskar said. "When the Supreme Court asks you, there is no question about it, there is not much you can do and I will

be happy to do what they ask me to do", he told NDTV. Gavaskar, a former Indian captain, said he would wait for the final order from the court. "I will consider it, it will be a huge honour that Supreme Court feels I will be good enough to do the job. But we will have to wait and watch until tomorrow in which direction it goes. Let's not jump the gun," the former Indian captain said.Asked if he is prepared for the challenge, Gavaskar said: "As an opening batsman, you have to be prepared for all kinds of challenges, you have to play in all kinds of pitches, you are always prepared for a

challenge mentally and physically. Even today, although I am happy to be away from the limelight, I am prepared to do what is needed if the Supreme Court wants me to do so," he added. "In situation like this, you will have different opinions. You will have to sit down and think about it. I don't know how will it help. When fixing scandal broke out 14 years ago, cricket continued," Gavaskar said when asked if IPL 7 should be scrapped. "We need to put measures in place. There should be Anticorruption officials available for every team in IPL, so that young players will know where to approach." Asked about his views on Srinivasan, who didn't resign even after Supreme Court's observation, Gavaskar said: "Look, I think we need to understand that everyone is innocent until proven guilty. I would not be able to pass judgement on that. It is not my area. It is a completely different issue on which I have zero experience."

It's a bad day for BCCI. Things have gone far beyond and it will only hurt cricket a lot. But I think in the interest of cleaning up the game, may be the Supreme Court's observations are correct. Whatever the Supreme Court decides BCCI will have to abide by it. Most of the BCCI members are in dark about what is transpiring in the last 7-8 days. So, the BCCI should immediately, without any further delay, call Special General Body meeting and apprise all members about what has happened. And then the persons who are responsible should be taken to task. NIRANJAN SHAH, FORMER BCCI SECRETARY We need to wait for the Supreme Court's final order. The Supreme Court has given some suggestions and there will be arguments on these suggestions tomorrow. RAJEEV SHUKLA, VP, BCCI

rode a well judged race on it and beat Silver Streak a few metres from the win post. And Dallas Todywalla has done a splendid job with Negotiator. It started in Class III this season and today it ran in a Class II race. With a powerful run it beat Falcon which also ran quite well. Trainer: Malesh Narredu. Dance Debonaire, trained by Narendra Lagad was a big surprise. It was available at 20 to 1. In the race – The Busy Lizzie Trophy – Shining Path was backed as it was the certainty of the season too. There were some admirers of Presidential too – some 'betting' was reported to have been wagered on it. When the race began, Allegiance set the pace and was in front in the 1800 metre race even well up on the stretch. Shining Path moved well and so did Presidential. Nikil who was on Danse Debonaire got his mount moving and got the race.

n excellent performance on Sunday was provided by La Femme Fleur – a 4-year-old filly in the Div II of the Forbes India Trophy. It was an easy winner. It did not attract much attention from racegoers – as it was running for the first time. It is a filly which can make it big. There were some terrible bolts from the blue on Sunday. Angel in the Sky attracted a lot of betting. But the winner was Victoria Falls. Victoria Falls has run very well this season. It ran very well with a dozen horses in the Western India Bookmakers Federation Trophy. Another horse which ran well was Shygirl. Silver Streak, owned by Dr. Vijay Mallya and trained by Dallas Todywalla ran exceedingly well but not well enough to win the R.M. Rukmani Goculdas Million. The winner was Supreme Star which is owned by Dr. MAM Ramaswamy and trained by Malesh Narredu. Sandesh The season is coming fast to

IRPUR: An unbeaten 116 from from Alex Hales steered England to a six-wicket triumph over Sri Lanka in their Group one match in Chittagong on Thursday. Hales faced 64 deliveries in his maiden T20 century, hitting 11 fours and six maximums, as England recovered from a poor fielding display to stay alive in the tournament. Earlier, Mahela Jayawardene and Tillakaratne Dilshan hit brilliant half-centuries to lift Sri Lanka to 189-4 against a scrappy England outfit. Jayawardene hit a lucky 89 and Dilshan scored 55 after England

captain Stuart Broad won the toss and opted to bowl in the Super-10 game at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury stadium. Jayawardene hit 11 boundaries and three sixes during his 51-ball knock and Dilshan smashed two sixes and four fours in his 47-ball innings as the two added 145 for the second wicket. UMBAI: After impressive outings in the Auto GP series where Narain Karthikeyan secured five wins and four poles, the former Formula One racer has secured a place with a Super Formula team, Impul Hoshino Racing for the entire season which would comprise of eight rounds to be held in Japan and South Korea. The Coimbatore born Karthikeyan said that there were many similarities between the Super Formula and Formula One and the former is just a shade lagging behind in terms of speed from its superior counterpart. Along with Formula One, the Super Formula will also have new cars on the track which are faster than their predecessors. “Pleasantly surprised that we have a new car this year, with the Dallara SF 14, 2.0 litre engine. Compared to Formula One last year, we were three seconds off on similar tyres. With F1 slowing down this year, we should be on par in terms of time. It is going to be really fast with the format of the races the same as Formula One with a pit stop and a luxury of a fuel stop as well. Quite a lot of strategies will come in to place,” said the 37-year-old Narain Karthikeyan. Grand Prix conducted with new rules, where organisers and fans complained about the lack of noise from the Formula One engines, Karthikeyan said one should brace for greener times. “I actually quite enjoy it. We have to move on with the times and everyone is going greener. If you see the cars on television it is quite difficult to drive. They have less downforce, you need to have lot of car control and the cars are slipping and sliding. It is quite exciting to watch. Obviously, Mercedes seems to be strong now. Reliability is a factor for everyone. It is going to be a surprising season with lot of winners,” he added. Karthikeyan who will be partnering Joao Paulo de Oliveira at Impul Hoshino Racing said that with reliability being an issue for most of the F1 teams this season, he feels Mercedes with the start they have had at the Australian Grand Prix, would be difficult to overcome. “It is a very complicated piece of engineering so we are seeing lot of retirements. Since there are developments in F1, in the next couple of races we can expect higher reliability. HITTAGONG: South Africa survived a mighty scare before their bowlers brought the turnaround to pull off a narrow six-run victory over minnows the Netherlands in their World Twenty20 match here. Put into bat, South Africa suffered a batting collapse after a strong start to post a modest 145 for nine as paceman Ahsan Malik Jamil recorded career-best figures of five for 19. The Proteas were on course for an embarrassing defeat before the inexperienced Dutchmen left them off the hook in the Super 10 Group 1 match at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium. The Netherlands were seemed cruising at 116 for four in the 13th over, thanks to a brilliant innings of 28-ball 51 from opener Stephan Myburgh, needing just 40 runs from more than seven

Magic Bus gets recognition at Laureus K

UALA LUMPUR: Magic Bus, an India-based NGO that is transforming the lives of hundreds of thousands of underprivileged children in the country, has been recognised at the Laureus World Sports Awards with the presentation of the Laureus Sport for Good Award here. Magic Bus, founded by Englishman Matthew Spacie and based in Mumbai, aims to take children out of poverty through a programme of mentoring and coaching. Since 2001, the Magic Bus programme has grown to embrace over 300,000 children in 12 states each week and Spacie's ambition now is to reach out to one million children by 2016. Magic Bus, which has received funding from Laureus since its

inauguration and which has been a strategic partner of the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation for five years, is the product of Spacie's fascination for India which began when, as a 17-yearold taking a break from academic studies, he worked in the Howrah leprosy centre near Kolkata. Later, while playing rugby for Bombay Gymkhana Club, Spacie sought to use the offer of involvement in the game to improve the prospects of young boys living on the streets and in slums. Magic Bus, which now looks after both boys and girls, was born out of that initiative and Spacie has plans to extend the idea, centred around sportsbased activities and a solid contingent of volunteers, to other countries.

South Mumbai MP Milind Deora along with Aman Santosh Gaikwad and Mohammed Kamran Ansari, winners of the South Mumbai Junior Soccer Challenger who will be heading to the Queens Park Rangers Football Club in London for a six-week training programme at its youth development centre.

MUMBAI: Hard-working and roving striker Francisco Salin was instrumental in leading Mumbai Customs to a well-deserved 1-0 win against a spirited Union Bank of India in an evenly contested Elite Division match of the Mumbai District Football Association League, played at the GSA ground, Cross Maidan, on Thursday afternoon. The nippy forward netted the lone goal in the very seventh minute. Customs and Union Bank adopted a positive approach and went on the offensive from the outset. But, just as the two teams, were settling down Customs from a snap move snatched an early lead. The goal came about when Salin’s strike partner upfront, Kevin Patrick, provided a measured pass from the right. Salin timed his run well to meet the aerial ball and head home past Union Bank goalkeeper Asif Ansari in the seventh minute.

REAL MADRID BEATEN AGAIN, BARCA WIN

M

ADRID: Real Madrid suffered a huge blow to their La Liga title hopes as a 2-1 win for Sevilla sent them crashing to a second defeat in four days. Colombian striker Carlos Bacca struck twice to give the hosts a sixth consecutive league win after Cristiano Ronaldo had opened the scoring yesterday. League leaders Atletico Madrid now lead Real by three points and have a better head-to-head record against Los Blancos as they beat Granada 1-0. Barcelona moved into second place, a point behind Atletico, with a 3-0 win over Celta Vigo at the Camp Nou thanks to a double from Neymar. But it was a bittersweet night for the Catalans as goalkeeper Victor Valdes may have played his last game for the club after suffering cruciate ligament damage that will rule him out of the World Cup. Real were looking to react from a first defeat in 32 games on Sunday as they lost a thrilling El Clasico 4-3 to Barcelona and they started brightly with Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema going close inside the first 10 minutes. Ronaldo did open the scoring 14 minutes in as his freekick cannoned off Ivan

Media manager issues gag-order on questions on IPL fiasco

MIRPUR: The Supreme Court's stern observations on the IPL fiasco appears to have rattled the BCCI bigwigs back home as India's media manager Dr R N Baba issued a gag order on the media, stating that questions will be entertained "only on ICC World Twenty20". Once Dr Baba came into the press conference arena with Rohit Sharma as captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni again stayed away, he first announced that questions should only be based on "India team and the World Twenty20". However, a senior scribe among the Indian media contingent promptly retorted, saying Dr Baba need not state the obvious as the journalists know that Rohit is not in a position to answer the questions pertaining to the IPL controversy. Yet, there were two Western scribes, who asked Rohit in a roundabout manner about whether the incidents (Supreme Court proceedings) back home has affected the team. Rohit handled both questions admirably without trying to duck for cover.
