Demolition and shifting of slums leads to lesser number of students and near extinction of civic schools By Yatin Ingle
W
hile the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is pushing ahead the process of Right to Education, most of the BMC schools are finding it difficult to get adequate students. It has also been noticed that since some schools do not have even a single student, the corporation had to shut them down. With the number of students seeking admissions in BMC schools seeing a sharp decline, the corporation states that the demolition and shifting of slums has been the only reason for the slump. In 2013, the BMC had passed a resolution which stated that schools with zero per cent students should be shut down. Since then, the corporation has shut down a number of schools which do not
there were 8,223 seats to grab, only 6,575 seats were filled up leaving 1,701 seats vacant. Even after the second round of the admission lottery, the vacant seats remained untouched. The corporation had declared 262 English medium, three Hindi medium, three Urdu medium, two Gujarati medium and 52 Marathi medium schools as eligible for introducing the RTE concept. Among these, 84 schools across Mumbai did not get a single application. Considering the reports and records of the schools being shut down and thousands of RTE seats going vacant, the BMC is witnessing a massive setback in the field of education. Shubhangi Jogi, Education Officer, BMC while speaking to the ADC said: “The major reason for The classrooms of BMC-run schools are almost always nearly empty. the decline in students in our schools is due to the shifting and have a single student. Rane not coping with his son’s defeat: NCP By A Staff Reporter
R
ubbishing allegations of Maharashtra Industries Minister Narayan Rane that it conspired to defeat Congress in the state, NCP spokesman Nawab Malik said, "It looks like Rane has not digested his son's defeat in the Lok Sabha elections." Rane's son Nilesh failed to retain his Sindhudurg-Ratnagiri Lok Sabha seat this time. NCP MLA from Sawantwadi, Deepak Kesarkar, had openly campaigned against him. When asked about the demand for leadership change in the Congress, Malik said such talk at this juncture was not good. "Introspection is on in both parties into reasons for the massive defeat in the Lok Sabha polls and strategy is being planned to win back people's confidence for the Assembly elections," he said. On senior BJP leader Nitin Gadkari taking charge of the Union Transport Ministry, Malik said he should take steps to scrap the toll system on highways and expressways. "Since Sena-BJP combine in Maharashtra has promised to make the state toll free if it comes to power in the state, Gadkari should take the lead and implement it nationwide," he said. Malik said the NCP had congratulated the new government at the Centre and that the party would play the role of a responsible opposition. Referring to the presence of all SAARC leaders at Prime Minister Narendra Modi's swearing-in ceremony yesterday, he expressed hope that India-Pakistan ties would improve.

OUR FORTS NEED PROTECTION Everyone is keenly watching the way the Rs.11-crore Sewree Fort Project, undertaken by MTDC, is developing. Depending upon the results, this iconic landmark of Mumbai could be the template for hundreds of other forts in Maharashtra which are not under the jurisdiction of the ASI. Just imagine, then, spending a day at the old Sewree Fort, already famous as a location to spot our pink flamingoes. You will be able to check out the museum, watch multi-media presentations in the mini-theatre, pick up a keepsake from the souvenir shop, and drop in at the open deck restaurant where you can have a meal or a cup of coffee, and watch the flamingoes do their migratory thing.

THANKSGIVING
This powerful prayer is very effective in examinations. It has to be said before appearing in the examination. There are two variants to this prayer. Both the prayers are equally effective. You can choose any one of these: First Prayer “O Great St. Joseph of Cupertino who while on earth did obtain from God the grace to be asked at your examination only the questions you knew, obtain for me a like favour in the examinations for which I am now preparing. In return I promise to make you known and cause you to be invoked. Through Christ our Lord. St. Joseph of Cupertino, Pray for us. Amen.” Second Prayer “O St. Joseph of Cupertino who by your prayer obtained from God to be asked at your examination, the only preposition you knew. Grant that I may like you succeed in the (here mention the name of Examination e.g. History paper I) examination. In return I promise to make you known and cause you to be invoked. O St. Joseph of Cupertino pray for me O Holy Ghost enlighten me Our Lady of Good Studies pray for me Sacred Head of Jesus, Seat of divine wisdom, enlighten me. “Remember, when you succeed in the exams then you should thank St. Joseph of Cupertino. Will new Central govt change their prospects? Considering the unprecedented victory of BJP across the nation and especially its alliance partners in the state, a kind of split atmosphere of joy and sorrow seems to have gripped the state as well as the city police force. The reason for this is – on the one hand, the rank-andfile in the middle level police officers and the constabulary staff, who are in euphoria, think that unlike the present government, BJP will bring in a lot of changes benefiting them in every aspect of their service and in past policies. On the other hand, the IPS officers, particularly at higher echelons, believe that they will become the first and immediate victims of the new rulers at the Centre, as their entire calculations of lobbying with the high command at the Centre for their appointments will be in a mess. and they should wait for the replacement of the officer, who has been transferred. The Sr PIs of the concerned police department should immediately inform
about the officer who has been shown as transfered in the 2014 police inspector transfers list. neel.shah@afternoondc.in

Congress silent over break-off demands While most in Cong want ties with NCP snapped before upcoming Assembly elections, NCP chief Pawar is likely to demand more seats for his party By A Special Correspondent
D
espite the demands to snap ties with the NCP gaining momentum among the Congress rank and file, the Congress leadership has preferred to keep silent. Sources have claimed that the Congress high command is yet to come to the terms with its debacle in the Lok Sabha elections. With the Lok Sabha polls leaving the Congress badly bruised, some of the Congress leaders from the state are now demanding that the party sever ties with the NCP and contest the upcoming Assembly polls independently. On the other hand, the key ally, NCP, has demanded more seats for itself in the Assembly elections due later this year while attributing the debacle to complete breakdown of dialogue between ruling UPA allies. This has created confusion among the grass root Congress workers and they are desperately looking at the party bosses who have become dumbstruck. Many senior party functionaries blamed their loss to the quiet alliances between NCP and saffron nominees. According to them, NCP activists in the constituencies of Congress candidates were openly campaigning for the BJP or Shiv Sena contenders. Significantly, the NCP has decided to exploit the situation. NCP chief Sharad Pawar made a pitch for his party getting more seats as part of the seat-sharing arrange-
ment on the strength of its better performance in the Lok Sabha polls. “Last time, when we got less seats than the Congress in the Lok Sabha polls, they had said that they should get more Assembly seats to contest. We should remember it this time when we sit to discuss seatsharing”, Pawar himself has made this clear while addressing a meeting of party functionaries. NCP was a key constituent of the Congress-led UPA I and II and has been running the Democratic Front government in the state as a junior partner of the Congress for the last about 15 years. During the last Assembly polls in 2009, NCP had contested 114 seats and Congress 174 in the 288-member House. In the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections, NCP contested 21 seats and won four, while Congress managed to clinch just two of the 27 seats it fought, the worstever showing by the party. While Pawar, the tallest leader in the state's ruling alliance, appeared keen on extracting a larger pound of flesh from his down-in-thedumps partner, his right hand man Praful Patel said that Dr. Manmohan Singh's failure to assert himself as a Prime Minister and a complete breakdown of political dialogue between the Congress and its allies led to the rout. Against this backdrop, the Congress workers are looking at the high command to swing into action.

55-year-old sentry, on duty at the Air Force station in Santacruz (E), fired five rounds from his rifle at his colleagues, killing two and injuring two during the wee hours of Tuesday. The accused has been identified as R.H. Yadav, who is a native of Rajasthan. He had been working at the Air Force's signal unit located at the service road at Santacruz since the last 10 years. According to the police, the incident occurred at 1.30 am when Yadav’s colleagues were sleeping in separate rooms in the Air force Signal building. The officers of the Nirmal Nagar police said that Yadav was on duty, he entered the first room and fired two rounds from his rifle at Somdutt and H.K. Singh from Haryana who were fast asleep. Ponder awhile… “People who ask us when we will hold talks with Pakistan are perhaps not aware that over the last 55 years, every initiative for a dialogue with Pakistan has invariably come from India.” — Atal Behari Vajpayee
A ‘historic’ event? B
OTH Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Pakistani conterpart Nawaz Sharif have declared that the meeting between them was a ‘historic event.’ Both stated that there have been constructive discussions. And they have agreed that it should be possible to take whatever has been achieved forward. Narendra Modi, like the UPA government, has also said that the terrorists who masterminded the Mumbai attack should be punished. However, while the UPA made action against terrorists a conditional to holding talks, our prime minister charted a new course. While asking for strict action against terrorists, he said that talks should be held unconditionally. Nawaz Sharif could not possibly be against terror in Pakistan. He has made a vague reference to terror and laid stress on closer and extensive exchanges between the two countries. In the statement which he read out before his departure to Pakistan, he avoided reference to terror and Kashmir. He said that the two countries should change decades of confrontation into cooperation. Pakistan’s Nawaz Sharif, however, said there is no terrorism in Pakistan. The truth is he cannot eliminate terror in his country. It is obvious that is why he has avoided any reference to Kashmir and terror. He could not have but noticed that even as he was holding talks with the Indian prime minister, there were two violations on the ceasefire line. Those violations were clearly messages to Sharif. What has become clear is that Sharif would like to normalise relations with India but he cannot do so because of the army and terrorists in Pakistan. Can it be said that a beginning has been made. Thanks to diplomatic coup by Narendra Modi — he had invited all the SAARC nations to come to the swearing-in ceremony and that gave an excuse to Nawaz Sharif to come to India. Pakistan is a member of SAARC. A hopeful decision taken by Nawaz Sharif and our prime minister is that the foreign secretaries of the two countries should keep meeting and carry forward whatever has been achieved during their talks in New Delhi.

ARENDRA MODI’s cabinet bears a strong Arun Jaitley imprint, signaling the rise of a new power axis in the BJP. In case anyone missed it, Modi drove the point home with his unprecedented decision to give two of the Big Four portfolios, finance and defence, to the man he has marked as the Advani to his Vajpayee. But any resemblance to the old order ends with the power of two. Modi and Jaitley will contemporize their equation to suit the times and their own distinctive temperaments. Although the official pecking order puts Rajnath Singh and Sushma Swaraj at number two and three positions respectively, BJP circles have no doubt that Modi and Jaitley are the real drivers of both government and party. It’s not just the choice of portfolios for Jaitley. Modi has picked up Jaitley loyalists like Nirmala Seetharaman, Piyush Goyal and Dharmendra Pradhan for key economic portfolios like commerce, power and petroleum respectively. Jaitley’s imprint is visible in the appointment of the new government’s two top law officers as well. Close associates Mukul Rohtagi and Ranjit Kumar are poised to be Attorney General and Solicitor General respectively. Also, the buzz in the BJP is that while Ravi Shankar Prasad will hold additional charge of the law portfolio with the telecom ministry, Jaitley will have the final say in judicial appointments and all important legal cases that may come up in future. Significantly, neither Rajnath nor Swaraj succeeded in getting ministerial berths for their loyalists. Rajiv Pratap Rudy, an old Rajnath hand, was a notable omission from the list of ministers. Both looked visibly upset at the swearing-in ceremony. The glow that should have been there with the formation of the BJP’s first majority government was missing. It is interesting that Modi has handed over such vast powers to Jaitley. The trust quotient is clearly an important factor. Modi and Jaitley go back a long way. Those who remember those dark days during the 2002 communal violence in Gujarat will recall that Jaitley was Modi’s most vocal defender and protector. He has also been helping Modi with all the legal cases in which he has been entangled relating to the riots.

But trust is not the only thing. Jaitley is Modi’s key to Delhi. He is the insider to Modi’s outsider. He is a Dilliwala from birth, a product of Delhi university, a former minister in the Vajpayee government and till recently, the BJP’s leader in the Rajya Sabha. The new PM needs a pair of capable hands to navigate him through Delhi’s power corridors and through Parliament where the new government lacks a majority in the Upper House. Modi seems to have decided that Jaitley is the man for the job. A more insecure leader would have opted to play games by creating a rival power centre

which served as the party’s war room during the election. She spends most of the day there and is telephoning Congress candidates across the country for a run down on why they lost. Unlike her brother who operates through aides and courtiers, Priyanka has a more direct style. She picks up the phone and dials the number herself. She doesn’t believe in working through intermediaries. She’s surprised many Congress nominees like this. They are stunned to hear a voice on the other side identifying herself as Priyanka. While her style is a refreshing change from that of her mother and brother, Congress circles feel that she can only make a difference if she takes complete control of the party. It can’t be a triumvirate of mother-sondaughter. As the Modi campaign has shown, and as Indira Gandhi proved back in 1971, the country wants one face with which voters can identify. Sonia will have to take a hard decision if she wants the Congress to survive: son or daughter?

Intellect and wisdom: Two aspects of intelligence I
NTELLECT is the knowledge of names and forms, their character and nature, gathered from the external world. It shows in an infant from birth, when he begins to be curious about all he sees; then, by storing in his mind the various forms and figures he sees he recognises them as an addition to his knowledge of variety. Man thus gathers the knowledge of numberless forms of the whole world in his mind and holds them; some of them stand out luminously and predominate over, and cover, others. He also retains those forms, which interest him. The nature of forms is to overpower one another in proportion to their material concreteness. The more concrete they are, the more luminous thy appear; so the intellectual person takes an interest in their variety and law of change, and as knowledge is the food of the soul, he at least becomes increasingly interested in the knowledge of names an forms, and calls that ‘learning’. This becomes his would, although it neither gives him a sense of unchanging comfort, nor does he thereby gain an everlasting peace. Wisdom is contrary to the above-named knowledge. It is the knowledge, which is illumined by the light within; it comes with the maturity of the soul, and opens up the sight to the similarity of all things and beings, as
will as the unity in names and forms. The wise man penetrates the spirit of all things; he sees the human in the male and female, and the racial origin which unites nations. He sees the human in all people and the divine immanence in all things in the universe, until the vision of the whole being becomes to him the vision of the One Alone, the most beautiful and beloved God. In giving a definition for some terms used in esotericism, one may say that consciousness is the wakeful state of the knowing faculty. Knowledge is that of which the
MATTER & SPIRIT consciousness is conscious. Conscience is a sense, which is born when consciousness holds before itself in a scale, on the one side an action ad on the other side an ideal. Intelligence is the grasping faculty of consciousness, which by every means recognises, distinguishes, perceives, and conceives all that is around it. Ignorance is the state of the mind when it is in darkness. When mental vibrations flow into the astral plane, without conscious direction, it is called imagination; when they do so under conscious direction, it is called thought. When the imaginations is experienced during sleep
it is called a dream. Impression is a feeling, which rises as a reaction on receiving a reflection coming from the external world (physical, mental, or astral). Intuition is an inner message, given in the nature of warning or guidance, perceived by the mind independently of any external source. Inspiration is the rising of a stream from the depth of the heart of the jinns and manifests in the realm of poetry, music, painting, sculpture, or any art. Vision is a spiritual dream, which is witnessed either when awake or asleep. It is called a dream because the radiance of the vision brings about a semi-sleep to the seer, even when awake. Revelation is the disclosing of the inner self. The consciousness throughout manifestation facing towards the surface, turns its back to the world within, the sight of which is therefore lost to it. But when it begins to look within, the world unseen is disclosed, and Choudatabaq, the fourteen planes, consisting of the seven heavens and the seven earths, are revealed. ‘The veil shall be lifted from thin eyes and thy sight shall be keen’, as it is said in Quran. And annihilation (Fana) is equivalent to ‘losing the false self (Nafs)’, which again culminates in what is called Eternal Life (Baqd). — Hazrat Inayat Khan

Narendra Modi’s cabinet: Small and sweet THIS refers to the article ‘Modi is India’s 15th PM’ (ADC, May 27). Prime Minister Narendra Modi has sprung a pleasant surprise on everyone by forming a Cabinet comprising of just 45 ministers. He has successfully accomplished this task, by combining certain ministries and re-structuring those under one cabinet minister. Notwithstanding the strong possibility that he may expand his ministry, during the course of the next few months, to make it a more cohesive unit; it will only be a marginal expansion, largely adhering to Modi’s motto ‘minimum government, maximum governance’. Another really welcome aspect is that Modi has provided representation for women to the extent of 25%, in the cabinet rank; hitherto a record. All Indians are well aware that every minister is an enormous drain on the public exchequer, in terms of salary and other astronomical perks. By the singular act of restricting the size of his cabinet substantially, Modi has successfully effected recurring savings of crores of rupees for the nation. — V. Chandramohan, Ghatkopar

IN all the euphoria, post the elections, who is the saddest person in the country? It is the President. He was waiting for a chance to play a grand role as most people expected that no single party will get a majority alone and depending on the numbers, the President can play the role of an umpire. Now that did not happen. Moreover, he is unlikely to get a chance again. Also look at the role of the President in the oath taking ceremony. All he kept on saying was “main” 90 times and “congratulations” 45 times. It is time the ceremony is cut short. Builders told to pay Rs1.25 lakh for room built on forest land A consumer forum has ordered two builders to pay Rs.1.25 lakh compensation to a complainant for selling a room in a chawl made on forest land. In their recent order, Thane District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum president Umesh Jhavalikar and member N.D. Kadam asked builders Naresh Pandurang More and Santosh Yadu Bhilare of 'Shree Samarth Krupa Builders' to pay Rs.1.25 lakh and also return Rs.2.50 lakh taken from the complainant for selling the room in the chawl built by them at Achole village of Virar in 2010. According to the complainant, Vency John Fernandes, she had bought the room in the chawl for Rs.2.50 lakh from the builders, but it was razed by the forest department later in the same year, for encroachment. After she complained to the builder in this regard, they gave her a cheque of Rs.1 lakh which was dishonoured by the bank, she told the forum. Holding the builders responsible for financial loss and mental harassment caused to Fernandes, the forum asked them to pay her compensation and the property purchase amount.

The results are out and the students have just heaved a sigh of relief as a very important intimidating question confronts them that will define their career path i.e. to choose between Arts, Science and Commerce
MUMBAI | WEDNESDAY, MAY 28, 2014 By Nivedita Dargalkar
Which stream is best suited for me? Most students face this dilemma of choice once the results are out. Then there are also some long-held notions that society propagates that students with above average marks must pursue science, those with average marks should opt for commerce and those obtaining below average marks should settle for arts. Thus, a pressure builds up in the student’s mind, an indicator that they are now closer towards choosing their career path than ever before. However, this pressure many a times not only stems from the student’s own aims and ambitions but also from their familial and peer influence. So what exactly are the parameters of judgement that students must apply to help them make an informed and apt choice at the start of their career path? One of the best approaches while deciding on your subjects/stream is to opt for or look at doing something that you are good at and would enjoy. Therefore, choose the subjects you enjoy as well as which are your strengths. If mathematics and finance interest you then opt for commerce – you can opt for professional courses like Chartered Accountancy (CA), Certified Financial Analyst (CFA), Cost Accountancy (from ICWA), Company Secretary Ship (CS), Stock Broking or MBA thereafter. If science interests you, then you can pursue engineering, civil aviation, merchant navy, medicine, architecture, etc. On the arts side, there are careers like Media, Management, Design, Arts, Psychology, Hospitality, Law or Academics, graphic designing, multimedia, web designing, networking, software, etc. The choice of the stream must depend on your individual interests, personality, aptitude, ability, strengths and career goals. “Most students only consider their percentage and marks scored in a particular subject and not their interests”, warns Ashutosh Shirke, senior education and career counsellor. “And good marks do not necessarily mean keen interest in that particular subject as marks can be increased in a particular subject by consistent practice”, points out Shirke. Shirke suggests that generally intelligent students with a keen interest and liking for subjects like physics, chemistry and mathematics should opt for the science stream. “Students interested in mathematics (the algebra part) and in how companies run, basically who are good with numbers and mental maths and calculations should opt for the commerce stream”, suggests Shirke. Shirke suggests that students who are capable of studying in depth about human nature, behaviour and society and have the readiness to keep studying for many years should opt for the arts stream. “Arts has till now been an under-rated stream. A society needs as many economists, psychologists and sociologists as it needs scientists and chartered accountants”, says Shirke.

“Though a person’s interests are superficial and may change from time to time, his/her aptitude in a particular field remains constant. Psychometric analysis of one’s aptitude and subsequent counselling will help students to know and understand what exactly are the streams they are naturally good at”, says Shirke. However, Shirke spells a word of caution for students willing to undertake aptitude tests. “These tests have to be conducted by a registered psychologist and the results have to be inferred scientifically”, he points out. There are some websites that help students by assessing their aptitudes online such as www.self-directed-search.com and www.discoveryourpersonality.com.

Advertising opens up opportunities in strategising, creating campaigns, posters, ad films, and so on to create awareness about the client’s product or service by means of purchasing ad space. PR opens up job opportunities in understanding, communicating as well as maintaining a certain image of the client/ product amongst its audience/consumers, with minimum expenditure and via articles or news printed in newspapers, magazines, interviews broadcasted through Radio, TV Channels and so on. Several recognised institutes in India offer Bachelor level courses in Mass Media, Advertising and many also offer Post Graduate Diploma or Master level courses in Advertising/Advertising and Public Relations/ Marketing and Public Relation. MSc in Management versus an MBA
What is the difference between an MSc in Management and an MBA? —Neha
An MSc in Management is an in depth study of a Bachelor’s Degree in Management or Business Administration. It’s usually a year long program that allows you to gain an insight into various fields such as marketing, finance, corporate social responsibility and human resource management. Some schools will require you to take your GMAT or GRE as a part of the application. On the other hand, in the United States, the MBA is a more common form of a postgraduate business degree. Most universities do offer a Master’s degree in management. An MBA is typically two years long, and you have the opportunity to explore a wide array of interests and career options. You will need at least three years of solid work experience, and to be eligible for applying to the top business schools, you will need a GMAT score of at least 700. MBA is goal oriented, because you have a solid work experience and look to specialize or make a switch in your career. Students pursuing an MBA use the opportunity to travel, intern and network.

Through the six semesters, students get a chance to learn various subjects from literature, culture studies, brand management, creative writing and even film making. Selection to this course is carried out on the basis of academic marks of the qualifying degree or on the basis of certain entrance tests. I haven't been involved in extracurricular activities in school. Can I take a gap year to add extracurricular activities to my CV to improve my college admission chances? —Vispi A gap taken before college is usually taken to explore interests which you haven't got a chance to explore during high school; however your interest in that field must be shown in your high school activities. For example, if you've been a very keen environmentalist but could only do activities at a local level like beach cleaning, paper recycling etc; you could take a gap year to take your passion to a more national or global level. However, if you take a gap for a year to simply add activities to fill your resume, you won't be adding much value to your college applications because colleges prefer students who have been consistent with their activities.

‘More music, less talk’
F
irst the good news – you can earn a living doing radio programmes. However, you had better look at a private channel because on All India Radio (AIR) , it could be difficult, so better to have some kind of day job as well. More good news – AIR can be addictive, as radio jockey Fali Singara (33) has been discovering over the years. This rather old-fashioned, definitely conservative radio channel, seen generally as fuddy-duddy and hype free, is getting plenty of listeners, old and young. And it’s the young who are full of surprises. They want to listen to old stuff played by a courteous young man who understands the charm of melody. And, by the way, they want to listen to new stuff as well. If that is confusing, blame Fali! This ex-student of Cathedral and John Connon has always been interested in music and grew up with his father’s huge collection at home. Elvis and the Beatles figured largely on his private musicscape and it’s easy to see why. So in 1997, having already trained at Yuv Vani, when he saw an advertisement in the papers calling people for auditions, he jumped at the chance. “Around 250 people landed up and eight were chosen. The rules were clear and simple. You had to have a good voice (not squeaky for instance), you had to be accent neutral, and you had to have some language skills. I fitted the bill,” he says. He entered an institution that was a treasure trove of music and old-style radio talent – and he proceeded to learn on the job. “I wanted to promote the music I loved,” he declares. “I am associated with good music, whether it is stuff created 30 years ago or something that is out last week. For example, much of Michael Jackson’s latest album, 'Escape', was recorded decades ago and has just been released. It’s No. 1 across 50 countries. Which just goes to show that music made back then is still relevant,” he says. Fali still has the playlist of the first programme he did for AIR in 1997. “Elvis, of course. He’s always on my mind and I created an official fan club for him on radio. The Beatles, Phil Collins, U2, a bit of Police, a bit of Sting.” But it’s clear where his absolute loyalties lie. “Since then, I have developed and get a lot of requests from young people, asking for older songs. Imagine teenagers asking for Elvis, the Beatles, even Frank Sinatra and Robbie Williams”, says Fali, laughing a bit, and happily. He’s a multi-talented young man who did a BA in English Literature from Wilson College and dis-
“You have to make sure you speak sparely,” says Fali Singara (33), an RJ with AIR, as he speaks to Carol Andrade. “Be relevant,” he says, which is a bit puzzling when you consider these days that the radio jockeys talk, talk, talk, sometimes sacrificing music time to hear the sound of their own voices journalist, he took time off to go to the US and do a compressed degree in production and direction from the University of Southern California. Worked in Universal Studios and returned home to do documentaries. He did one on Mother Teresa, has worked with Sanjay Leela Bhansali on 'Guzaarish', helped Hrithik Roshan fine-tune his own depiction of a radio jockey in the film. But it is in the fan following he has built up over the years that he sees his success, as they listen with unfailing loyalty to a young man who dislikes being seen in an image-crazy world, and for whom the programme is everything. So why has he stuck to AIR rather than branching into the private channels, we ask curiously. “Because I like it’s old-worldly charm, its emphasis on a certain adherence to standards, and I can tell you, from my own interactions with peers in the business, that many music channels are sending out directives to its own RJs that they should be more like us.” “Like us,” means less chatter, more music. “Our USP,” declares Fali, “Is more music, less talk. It’s something we do. In a one-hour programme on private channels, you will get perhaps 10 songs. With us you will get as much as 17!” The implication is probably “beat that,” but having listened to him at various times over weekends, we can understand
“I like it’s (AIR's) old-worldly charm, its emphasis on a certain adherence to standards, and I can tell you, from my own interactions with peers in the business, that many music channels are sending out directives to its own RJs that they should be more like us.” covered another love – writing. “I read a book a day, co-founded 'The Recorder', a music magazine which I largely wrote for 10 years before it folded up, edited FHM”. And everywhere, his love for music shone through, in the kind of articles he wrote, the people he interviewed, the domain knowledge he brought to his work. Some time into his career as a music man and
the veracity of his claim. Over the years, he has honed the art of celebrity interviews to a fine art, the music coming in with unfailing regularity, the questions flowing with easy spontaneity, whether he is interviewing a Bollywood star like Shahid Kapoor or Lara Dutta, or contemporary dancer Astad Deboo, or the BBC’s Nik Gowing.
“Both Lara Dutta and Shahid were delights to talk to. As for Nik Gowing, he was both kind and efficient. When we started recording in the studio, he also put on his own recorder. He said it was the sign of an efficient journalist, to do his own recording so that nothing goes wrong. And I was fine with that, ensuring I got information right without letting myself get in the way,” Fali stated. With Nik Gowing, he talked about covering Princess Diana’s death, 9/11, crisis stuff. With Chetan Bhagat and Amish Tripathi, he talked about the astounding success of their books. With Astad, about the journey he has made in a difficult field. “You have to have general knowledge and a real interest in people, besides domain knowledge.” In another interview, he was asked which he considered more important, the RJ or the show format, and he answered, “I would place more importance towards the show format. There is no doubt that an RJ is important, but the show format is a radio station’s property that will never change. RJs are replaceable. Audience might take time to adjust to the change but they will adapt as long as the show format and the music are good. In a hit TV series, if an actor playing a particular character is replaced, it will not affect the show till the point the character and the show are good. Content and packaging is ultimately what matters”. And this is the crux of why AIR’s FM Rainbow is doing so well, increasing its listener base across demographics in spite of the emergence of new radio channels, internet, and the impact of the digital revolution. So, does Fali have any kind of checklist for aspiring radio jockeys? He laughs but then readily provides a rough one, warning that you have to add your own stuff and subtract to adapt to the rapidly evolving media landscape. Here it is: Look after your voice. Do the exercises, take care of it carefully. Keep yourself abreast of world affairs, general knowledge etc. Love music. Be open to all kinds. I least like R/B hip hop but I play it. Of course I much prefer playing Elvis and the Beatles, U2, Roxy, Sinatra, John Meyer, Enrique Iglesias, Cold Play, Sting etc. but I remember that it’s not what I want, but what the listener wants to hear. Sure I like l Bruno Mars, he’s like a young MJ, but I am not going to thrust my own preferences on my listener! Listen to everything and respect your listeners. Respect your organisation. For instance, how many people know what a fabulous library we have, with the finest songs? When Rajesh Khanna died, we were the first to put together a tribute. And a recent survey showed that our FM Gold, a programme that plays classic Hindi songs, has a very high recall among listeners. Finally, keep learning, keep educating yourself. You never know when you will need something you have heard, talked about or read in a programme. It’s all good. Fali can be heard on AIR’s FM Rainbow, at 107.1. Over the weekend, he does Rainbow Raptures at 10 pm, Rhythm Divine at 12 midnight, and the occasional celebrity interview on Sundays.

‘It has made me a better person’ Says musician Rupak Ganesh Dhamankar, as he believes that if you love music, it will love you for life
I
started my journey with music at the age of four. Music being in my family, I took initial lessons from my father Ganesh Dhamankar and later from Pt. Omkar Gulvani. To enhance my tabla skills and learn the basics of being a tabla player, I took guidance under the ‘Guru Shishya Parampara’ from the most renowned tabla player who has been a maestro in the music industry for about 35 years – Pt. Madhav Pawar. Music has become my life and I chose it as my career because I was born with it, and in a way I can say that music had chosen me to do its 'seva'. I tried my hand at different things such as cricket, table tennis, swimming, but in the end the career I chose was music. I did my schooling till SSC from MVM High School, Andheri. Later I finished my junior college from N.M. College and pursued my Bachelors in Mass Media (BMM) from Bhavan’s College, Andheri, after which I did my Post Graduation Diploma in Advertising and Public Relations from K.C. College of Management Studies. I was a decent student academically as my major focus and interest has always been music, especially the tabla. I currently teach music (Tabla and Percussion). Learning music has made me mature, disciplined, career oriented, dedicated and focused. It has made me a cooler person and has made me see everything from a different and a beautiful perspective. After a lot of hard work and training, I started playing professionally and today I am a professional tabla player and play shows nationally and internationally for movies, albums and concerts (Fusion and Classical) with eminent personalities from the industry. I also hold a lot of classical concerts. The best thing that I love about my profession is that it gives me immense happiness and extreme satisfaction because I am doing what I love and the cherry on the cake is that I get paid for it. The main investment in music is time. One has to invest time if he/she has to make it big in the field. As a new-comer one has to work very hard in this field to create a presence. Once that is done, you start getting concerts at an entry level which gives you experience. At an early stage one can earn about Rs.7,000 to 8,000 depending on one’s capability and the intensity of the show. If one is inclined and does immense practice and takes the right efforts it would take around 10 to 15 years to become an entry level professional, though things differ from person to person and the ability to play. An established professional will earn around Rs.80,000 to Rs.1 lakh approximately in this field only if he is a known musician. If he is a top level musician then he can earn around Rs.3 to 4 lakh per month depending on concerts. There are a lot of advantages of being in this field, first of all you get recognition, people start looking at you from a different perspective, you get to roam the world, you get paid well and
« PEER SPEAK
most importantly, it makes you happy. There are two sides to the same coin, hence like some advantages, there are also are some difficulties as well that you face sometimes, like one sometimes does not get family support as most of the parents think that there is too much risk involved in it to become successful, but risk is there is any field you choose. Thankfully my parents have been extremely supportive which is the most important motivation for me, other difficulties one could face is of not getting proper guidance and training, there are a lot of people who have potential in them but do not get proper training and guidance which I think it is the most important aspect as it sets the foundation for you to grow and excel. Another difficulty one could face is a lack of exposure. There are many musicians who are talented but do not get the right exposure that they deserve. There are difficulties involved in everything, but I believe we should not be disheartened by it, but work towards conquering them positively.
With the dream in my eyes to become a successful tabla player, I religiously practice and worship music. Possessing the strength of adapting to any kind of music genre and playing multiple instruments, I wish to accomplish and learn all that is necessary to take me close to and achieve my goal. I am just 22 years old today and I am positive towards my career and my music. To all those who wish to take up music as their profession, I would just like to say one thing, follow your heart, practice rigorously, work towards achieving the best, don’t look at it as a profession but as a passion, and things will be easy. One has to be patient as success is not immediate and is not guaranteed. Do not be disheartened by failure but take it as a motivation to success. Love music and music will love you for life. It can change you as a person for the better; trust yourself and your abilities. Music not only helps you achieve a lot but teaches you a lot of things that make you a better person.

Fortunately, with Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), even teaching and learning has become a more lively, enjoyable and effective process. Spoken Tutorials at Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) is one such tool that attempts to bring a revolution in education through technology. Spoken Tutorials (www.spokentutorial.org) teaches programming languages, office tools, graphic and circuit design tools through audio video tutorials in a simple and interesting manner. Initiated at IIT Bombay, Spoken Tutorials is funded by National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT) of Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. Due to this funding, courses are available to students free of cost, currently. Professor Kannan Moudgalya, a
faculty member in the Chemical Engineering Department of IIT Bombay, has founded oversees operations of Spoken Tutorial project. He says, “Spoken tutorial reduces time to impart training considerably. For instance, usually it takes 30 to 40 hours of instructions to cover curriculum in C; Spoken Tutorial does it through 20 audio
video tutorials of 10 minutes duration each. Students can code, compile, execute and test programmes, simultaneously, thus providing a practical complement to theoretical training”. The project has not only enabled many students sitting in farflung areas of the country to clear their doubts and develop a better understanding of the subject but

ormer Black Caps Captain Stephen Fleming supports a new campaign launched in India to grow awareness about New Zealand as an international study destination. India is currently the second largest and fastest growing source of international students to New Zealand. Education New Zealand (ENZ), the New Zealand Government’s agency for international education, has launched a 'Think New' campaign to build on this positive momentum. Announcing the new initiative, ENZ Regional Director – South Asia Ziena Jalil said, “New Zealand is already well known in India for cricket, great holidays and movies such as 'The Lord of the Rings' and 'The Hobbit'. With this campaign we want to strengthen New Zealand’s fast growing reputation in India as a high quality education destination as well. “Interestingly, most things that New Zealand is well known around the world for are built on the foundation of a strong education system – a system that is student focused, encouraging creativity and innovation, and preparing graduates for a future in a new world. This campaign urges students to think about their future in a world which is very different to when their parents were students. It asks students to think new –
think New Zealand”, says Jalil. Popular Indian Premier League (IPL) coach of the Chennai Super Kings and former New Zealand Black Caps cricket captain Stephen Fleming is fronting the awareness raising campaign. By expressing interest on the ENZ campaign website, prospective students will be automatically ‘in to win’ an exclusive dinner with Stephen Fleming. The campaign aims to channel prospective students who are already thinking about study abroad options to take the next step and convert their general interest in New Zealand into active consideration. Visitors who register their interest in studying in New Zealand on the campaign website will be contacted by a pool of New Zealand education agents who can provide more information about study options in New Zealand and support with the application process. “We want to continue to grow the number of high quality Indian students studying in New Zealand and for them to secure meaningful jobs. This campaign has been developed to help us achieve this goal”, Jalil says. The campaign will run till the end of June. Visit the campaign website: http://www.studyinnewzealand.com/india/start/

Assessing interests and needs to find the right balance is an important factor in deciding a career pathway. In many cases, the wrong choice may take its toll on a person and leads to professional stagnation and unhappiness. This impacts not only professional performance but also the personal aspects of life and relationships. It is absolutely important that one finds the time to indulge in activities that are of personal interest, especially if they are outside the sphere of one’s professional career. For students, much of this can be averted by investigating the interest and aptitude in a particular field of study; this can also be supported by an understanding of one’s own personality traits. Finding this has helped many students to kick-start their search for meaning in a career at an early stage in life. Assessing career aspects is not only for those who need guidance but also for those who have made certain decisions about them. It gives them more clarity vis-à-vis their chosen path and better direction to achieve them. Greater the clarity in direction, greater is the motivation for the child. Greater the motivation, greater is the drive for success and happiness. Mentoring at the right time will save for your child a lot of time and energy. Time invested for key decision making is a valuable investment for the contentment of all those who have a stake in the child’s future and well-being. « TALKING POINT
W
hat does it take to be happy? This was a thought I’d been harboring for a while. A cheerful smile, a jog for a mile, a warm hug, a beer mug, a cute pooch who licks or random chick flicks, the variety of things that make us happy have never ceased to amaze me. It shows how different we are from each other. The pleasure of the small pleasures of life is in recognition of the fact that they are small yet pleasurable. So how do we know when we are happy? How do we know what exactly makes us happy, when we are happy? In my own assessment and my fetish for theorising and creating frameworks, I’ve classified the sources of pleasures into the following broad categories
INTERNSHIP TIME
Summer Internships are great, we all know that. They help you in your career and add oodles of experience and credibility to your resume too! We asked a few youngsters to share their experience of their summer internship. My summer internship experience was great! I had a ball and didn't have much work to do. I did of course get a gist of what a working environment is and how things work in the corporate world. My bosses were nice and easy on me. I enjoyed whatever little work I did and made some great friends. At least I used my month of holiday well. I recommend it to everyone. —Divya Saha, Adventure Tourism I did my summer internship in an advertising firm and I got quite a bit of exposure and came to know how the world of advertising functions. Summer Internships are great as they give you ample knowledge and prepare you for jobs. I had fun learning and got practical, hands-on experience which will definitely help me in the future.
A happy mind
1) Intellectual Pleasure This kind of pleasure refers to the happiness one derives from getting intellectual value additions. It is either through assimilation of knowledge, insights or realisations which make one feel a sense of achievement or a mild enlightenment. It is the euphoria of fulfilled curiosity, of a question that gets answered. Thinking, reasoning, analysing and learning are the fundamental traits that separate us, the human creed from other creatures of nature. This is that fundamental pleasure which seeks to titillate the intellectual senses of a human being. It broadly refers to the topmost layer of Maslow’s hierarchy of perceived learning or Self Actualisation. That’s what scriptures have glorified as ‘Nirvana’ – The eternal state attained by the ‘learned’.
2) Emotional Pleasure This kind of pleasure usually refers to feeling of being wanted, loved. We feel emotional pleasure when our deeply entrenched needs of association and belonging are fulfilled. Be a compliment from a loved one or just an ‘I Love You’ does it for us. As per Maslow’s hierarchy, it is the pleasure one experiences upon fulfillment of the emotional safety, security and socialisation needs.
Feel, Taste and Sight. It could be a pleasure of getting a spa massage or the taste of your favourite chocolate or the fragrance of your preferred perfume. These pleasures are highly dependent on choices or preferences of each unique individual and any generalisations would not be fair.
4) Materialistic Pleasure The happiness derived out of material tangible possession is the source of this pleasure. This pleasure is highly relevant based on the financial power and 3) Physical Pleasure The absolute crude bodily pleasure desires of an individual. Materialistic experienced by us would be cate- pleasure can be derived from gorised under physical pleasure. It is the joy derived from happiness one experiences through possession and ownership of material any of the five senses of Touch, Smell, things.
My summer internship will be my best memory ever. I got a chance to work with an ace photographer, he trained me and showed me various camera angles and movements. I enjoyed clicking pictures of people and the city and that is what I did throughout my internship. I will highly recommend everyone to get a summer internship as it not only adds to your resume but gives you a great professional experience. —Aamir Ali, Photographer

I
ndia’s current account deficit (CAD) narrowed sharply to $32.4 billion (1.7% of GDP) in fiscal 2014 from $87.8 billion (4.7% of GDP) in fiscal 2013. The correction in CAD was primarily due to a contraction in merchandise imports coupled with a rise in service exports. Capital inflows at $48.8 billion – buffered by a surge in inflows under foreign currency non-resident (FCNR) deposits - were more than sufficient to finance the CAD, resulting in a $15.5 billion accretion
to India’s foreign exchange reserves. In fiscal 2015, “We now expect CAD to widen to $47 billion (2.2% of GDP) as restrictions on gold imports, imposed since July 2013, are gradually withdrawn” says CRISIL. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has already begun to take steps in this direction by allowing large private gold importers to resume importing gold and permitting nominated banks to give gold metal loans to jewellery manufacturers. Imports of capital and consumption goods (non-oil, non-gold imports) are also expected to rise this year as GDP
growth picks up to 6%. Despite pressure from rising imports, the upside to CAD is likely to be capped due to faster growth in exports led by a global recovery. According to it, “Financing CAD however, may pose a challenge in fiscal 2015 as global liquidity declines with continued tapering of US Fed’s bond purchase program. There will also no longer be a cushion from FCNR deposits as in the last year. Under these circumstances, the government’s ability to revive investor sentiment and lift growth will be key to attracting portfolio and FDI flows”.
Large-Scale Violations Of Norms In Some MF Schemes By A Business Reporter
M
arket regulator SEBI has found large-scale violations in several schemes of select mutual fund houses where norms regarding minimum 20 investors and maximum 25 % single investor exposure have been breached repeatedly. These fund houses have been asked by SEBI to immediately take redressal measures, failing which penal actions can be taken, a senior official said. Industry executives have also confirmed such directions from SEBI. Without naming the concerned MFs, the official said the violations have come to fore after an analysis of quarterly disclosures made by fund houses about their schemes. As per the norms, every mutual fund scheme needs to have a minimum of 20 investors, while one single investor can not account for more than 25 % of total assets managed by that scheme. SEBI found that many schemes have been repeatedly breaching these norms, especially during the course of a quarter. Some investors put large amount of money in a scheme and withdraw the same at a later stage to meet quarter-end norms, while many schemes were non-compliant on full quarter basis as well.
SEBI's analysis has put forth repeat offenders in many cases, where same investor was breaching these '20-25' norms repeatedly. The concerned fund houses have also been asked to put in place necessary mechanism to immediately identify such violations in the future. Industry body AMFI has also been asked to get into the matter and do the needful. Currently, there are about 45 fund houses in the country, which together manage assets worth over Rs 9 lakh crore. SEBI, recently, issued strict disclosure norms for mutual funds. They have been asked to make monthly disclosures about assets managed by them and explain the rationale behind exercising their voting rights in companies, among others. MFs are required to make the disclosures on their websites and share the same with Association of Mutual Funds of India (AMFI) within 7 working days from end of the month. These disclosure would also be available on AMFI's website. As per the new norms, mutual funds will have to disclose details with respect to Asset Under Management (AUM) from different categories of schemes, AUM from places beyond top-15 cities, contribution of sponsor and its associates in AUM, contribution from different

Assets Under Management of portfolio managers for high networth individual or HNI investors rose to Rs 7.79 lakh crore in April from the preceding month. According to latest update with the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi), the assets under management of portfolio managers increased to Rs 7,78,711 crore at the end of April, from Rs 7,68,326 crore in March. The AUM had touched a record level of Rs 9,58,121 crore in August last year. The total AUM has nearly doubled since the data was first released by Sebi in December 2010. types of investors (retail, corporate etc), state-wise contribution and AUM from sponsor/non-sponsor group distributors. Jaitley Promises To Contain Inflation, Promote Growth By A Business Reporter

ew Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Arun Jaitley yesterday pledged to contain price rise, restore confidence of investors in the economy and promote growth while keeping the fiscal deficit under check. Stating that the country’s economy was passing through difficult times, he said, “the challenges are very obvious. We have to restore back the pace of growth, contain inflation, and obviously concentrate on fiscal consolidation itself.” Veteran lawyer and senior BJP leader Jaitley was talking to reporters soon after taking charge of
the Finance Ministry. He also said that he would be looking after the Defence portfolio as additional charge only. “For a transient phase, I will be looking after Ministry of Defence also, but that’s only an additional charge till there’s an expansion in cabinet itself,” he added. Referring to his priorities as Finance Minister, Jaitley said, “I am conscious of the fact that I am taking over at a very challenging time particularly when there is a need to rebuild the confidence of the Indian economy. “The mandate with which our government has received has an inbuilt hope in it...the political change itself sends a strong signal to the global community as also the
domestic investors. I think over the next two months by expediting decision making processes we will be able to build on that.” The Minister further said the entire policy of the new govt would be spelled out in the next few days. “You will have to wait for a few days before we spell out the entire policy of the new government,” he said. On whether he would focus on inflation at cost of growth, Jaitley said a “the balancing act” will have to done. India had registered over 9% growth for a few years before the global financial meltdown of 2008 pulled it down. In the current fiscal the growth rate is expected to rise further to 5.5%.

RBI Does Not Open Savings Accounts By A Business Reporter

he Reserve Bank of India has said that a fake website has been created at http://www.rbi-inonline.org/savings.html by some unknown persons offering various banking facilities and asking members of public to apply online for opening “RBI Savings Account”. “The Reserve Bank clarifies that as India’s central bank,it does not offer services offered by commercial banks, such as, savings bank account, current bank account or credit cards. As such, the question of the Reserve Bank offering online banking services, as is indicated on the fake site, does not arise. The Reserve Bank has cautioned members of public not to fall prey to spurious offers made by the fake website. The Reserve Bank has further cautioned members of public that applying on line on that website could result in compromising one’s own crucial personal information that may be misused to cause financial and other loss to them”, says Alpana Killawala, Principal Chief General Manager, RBI. She advised members of the public to visit the official website of RBI at rbi.org.in and see press releases issued earlier which are made available as scrolling headlines for more information about various kinds of fictitious offers of huge moneys sent in the name of the Reserve Bank or its Governor and other senior offi-

It also offered opening an online account and that could have been used to dupe innocent people had the RBI not acted swiftly. Target Rs. 37
AL reported a strong Q4FY14 with EBITDA margins at 6% (vs. 2.2% est., -5% in Q3) led by cost savings, better realisations and higher operating leverage QoQ. Management expects a further 100-150bps volume-led uptick in margins. We raise earnings (margin assumptions at 6.8%/9.3% for FY15/FY16 vs. 1.7% in FY14), upgrade our target FY16E EV/EBITDA multiple from 9x to 10x, and move to a revised Mar’15 TP of Rs 37 (from Rs 30). We expect a rerating now that capex is behind us and debt is reducing amid a cyclical volume recovery. Better realisations aid topline growth: Net revenue fell 18% YoY to Rs 30.8bn, driven by a 25% decline in volumes, while average realisation was up 9.7%. QoQ, realisation improved 12% led by (1) price hikes of 1% each taken by AL in February/March, and (2) a change in product mix with a higher contribution from multi-axle trucks. The company has also effected another 2% hike in April. Margin surprise: AL reported its best operating margin in the past six quarters at 6% (est. 2.2%) as the company reaped benefits from reduced manpower cost, lower overheads across the board, better volumes driving up operating leverage, higher price realisations and a better product mix. AL reported exceptional gains of Rs 3.8bn (owing to profit on sale of investment/asset), excluding which adjusted PAT stood at Rs 1bn, +79% YoY. Raise estimates/TP: We raise FY15/FY16 earnings estimates on slightly higher margin assumptions. We also upgrade our target multiple on the stock from 9x to 10x FY16E EV/EBITDA, leading to a new TP of Rs 37 (old: Rs 30), given (1) a likely spike in FCF from FY15 with investment/ capex cuts, (2) margin improvement on cost controls, (3) structural demand recovery supported by new launches, and (4) better financial health. A reduced debt and working capital burden would help the company improve overall profitability. As per management, most of the capex is behind us (expects only Rs 1bn-1.5bn capex and Rs 2bn2.5bn investment p.a.).

Outlook and Valuation: We downgrade our revenues for FY15E by 3.7% to Rs 30 bn and by 3.6 % to Rs 37 bn for FY16E due to low base impact and lower revenue growth of 20 % factored(earlier 24-25 %revenue growth). We cut our EBDITAM from 41.4 % to 39.9 % for FY 15E due to higher other expenses on back of increased power cost. We downgrade our EPS by 10 % to Rs 66.8 for FY15E and by 7.6 % to Rs 81.7 for FY 16E. We revise our price downwards by 7% to Rs 1484 based on 18.2x FY 16E. We, however maintain our BUY rating on the stock. Key Takeaways: The company has Capitalized Fixed Assets of Rs 4.09bn during the year. SEZ capitalized for the year has been to the tune of Rs 4.49 bn. Company’s revenue growth for FY 14E was 11 % on constant currency basis. Divis has given a revenue guidance of 20 % as against 20-25 % earlier for FY15E and FY16E. Exports constituted 90% of sales and about 76% is to advanced markets in North America and Europe. Power cost was Rs 360 mn for Q4 FY14 and Rs 1470 mn for FY 14. There is a 50 bps decrease in power cost for FY 14 to 5.9 %. There has however been 50 paise per unit increase in power cost to Rs 7.08 per unit. This will reflect in increased power cost for FY15. BUSINESS BRIEFS BSE Proposes 49% Stake In Bourses By Foreign Exchanges
Government should allow leading global bourses to hold up to 49% stake in Indian stock exchanges to enhance the competitiveness of domestic capital markets, BSE has said. The current policy permits foreign bourses to own a maximum of 5% stake in Indian exchanges. “The current policy on ownership of stock exchanges may be amended to allow for an investment stake of at least 15% (or preferably even 26-49%) for foreign exchanges of international repute, in line with the regulations for Indian exchanges,” BSE said.
Net Capital Inflows To India To Rise Sharply In FY’15
The net capital inflows to India are likely to increase sharply in FY’15, buoyed by the historic victory of the BJP-led NDA headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, says a Nomura report. According to the global financial services firm, this historic victory has enthused investor confidence that the government will pursue reforms and policies that will put India back on high growth trajectory over the medium term. “We expect a USD 25 billion balance of payments surplus in FY’15,” Nomura said in a research note. According to the report, the import bill is likely to rise slightly on gradual relaxation in gold import restrictions and the non-gold import bill may also rise slightly as growth picks up in the latter half of FY’15.
Arrest of MD & CEO Unwarranted, Says Amway India
Direct selling firm Amway India yesterday termed the arrest of its MD and CEO William Scott Pinckney as an “unwarranted act” on “frivolous” charges that gave “a misleading impression” about its business. “We are aggrieved and shocked at the sudden and unwarranted act of detention of our official,” Amway India said in a statement. The case in which the action has been taken was filed in December, but the company said that it had no prior information on it. “The allegations mentioned in the FIR are frivolous and give a misleading impression about our business... Amway is a legitimate direct selling FMCG organisation operating in the country since 1998...,” the company asserted.
Realty Players Hope Modi To Usher In Faster Reforms
With the Narendra Modi government taking charge yesterday, real estate players hope the sector will get due priority, which will help bring the economy back to 8-9% growth. “The new government will pave way for realty reforms and take concrete steps to implement its promise given in the BJP manifesto to ensure housing for all in eight years,” Confederation of Real Estate Developers’ Associations of India (Credai) Lalit Kumar Jain said.
Assocham Seeks Auction Of All Available Spectrum At Earliest
Pitching for auction of all available spectrum at the earliest, industry body Assocham yesterday said government is losing Rs 2 lakh crore every year on account of spectrum that is lying idle. “We have urged the new telecom minister (Ravi Shankar Prasad) to immediately auction all available spectrum with socio-economic benefits valued at over Rs 2 lakh crore (excluding proceeds from auctions) lying idle with the government,” Assocham Chairman (National Telecom Council) T V Ramachandran told reporters here. He said government should auction spectrum in 700, 800, 900, 1800 and 2100 MHz bands concurrently at the earliest and also declare a clear roadmap for all available spectrum.
Corporate Affairs Min To Be ‘Clubbed’ With Finance Ministry
After a decade of independent existence, the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) will now be clubbed with the Finance Ministry. “There will be clubbing. Currently the (Corporate Affairs) ministry is under me. A notification has to come,” Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Arun Jaitley said when asked whether MCA will be part of Finance Minister. The notification to cluster MCA with Finance Ministry would be issued by the Cabinet Secretariat, he added. Jaitley, who is also the Defence Minister, will be shuttling between the two offices. However, MCA officials will report to him at his office in the Finance Ministry. MCA Secretary Naved Masood briefed Jaitley, who took charge of the Finance Ministry today, about the happenings in Corporate Affairs Ministry. The corporate affairs ministry is engaged in implementing the new companies law which seeks to modernise the rules and norms regulating companies in line with the changed global corporate culture.

Groundsmen cover the ground as it rains heavily leading to the cancellation of the 1st play off match between KKR and KXIP at Eden Garden in Kolkata on Tuesday.
Heavy downpour forces IPL qualifier to be postponed by a day
K
OLKATA: Incessant rainfall for the past few days in the city led to the postponement of the first qualifier of IPL-7 between hosts Kolkata Knight Riders and Kings XI Punjab scheduled at the Eden Gardens. The match will now be held at the same venue at 4 pm. In case the weather holds up in time, there is a possibility of a five-overs per side game by 9:10 pm latest. At 5:15 pm, umpires Nigel Llong and S Ravi had an inspection with curator Prabir Mukherjee. After consultations, the trio were unanimous that no play would be possible as the ground would not be ready in time for a minimum five-
overs per side match. As per the playing conditions and rules of IPL, in the event that a fiveovers per side game is not possible, the fate of the match will be decided on the basis of 'Super Over'. In case Super Over is not possible, then Kings XI Punjab by virtue of winning 11 matches in the league stage compared to KKR's nine games, will go through to the finals. However KKR will have another shot at final as they will be playing the second qualifier against the winner of the 'Eliminator' between Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings, on May 30. As per IPL media advisory, the spectators, who have bought the
Yuvraj Walmiki replaces injured Thimmaiah in India’s World Cup team
T
HE HAGUE (NETHERLANDS): Indian men's hockey team has suffered yet another blow as forward Nikkin Thimmaiah has been ruled out of the upcoming Hockey World Cup, following a hamstring pull on the right side. Doctors diagnosed a tear in hamstring muscle and have advised Thimmaiah a complete bed rest of four weeks. Yuvraj Walmiki has been named as his replacement. Couple of days back, striker Ramandeep Singh was also ruled out of the tournament after seriously injuring himself during
India's first practice match against Argentina. "It's a double blow to us. Nikkin Thimmaiah is a key player in the team and missing out on him will be a big setback. With both Ramandeep and Nikkin missing out on the big platform I am sure both Yuvraj and Lalit (Upadhyay, who replaced Ramandeep) will take this as a big opportunity to prove their game," said India's head coach Terry Walsh. Walmiki, 23, who will be flying tonight for The Hague to join the team for the May 31 to June 15 mega-event, said he would be looking to give his best. "It's a big loss for the team as we will miss both Ramandeep and Nikkin during the upcoming World Cup. I will give by best and live up to the expectations of the coach and the team," said Walmiki. "I was a part of the Indian team that went to Europe Tour last month to get used to the weather and playing conditions ahead of the Rabobank Hockey World Cup. It should not be a big challenge for me. I am excited for having received a call from the team and am looking forward to take on the challenge ahead," he added. In the recent past, Walmiki has played in Hockey World League Finals 2014 and was one of the key performers.

IPL returns to CCI after three seasons M
UMBAI: Brabourne Stadium, the long-standing Test venue in this metropolis before the construction of the Wankhede Stadium, will play host to the Indian Premier League after a gap of three seasons when holders Mumbai Indians clash with Chennai Super Kings in the Eliminator today. Brabourne was the home venue of MI and hosted all their seven home games in 2010 when Wankhede was unavailable as it was being revamped to organise the 2011 World Cup matches. MI had made the Cricket Club of India, that owns Brabourne, a veritable fortress then -- similar to the way they made the Wankhede last year -- as they won six out of seven games there, the only loss coming against Royal Challengers Bangalore.
But Mumbai had another venue to host IPL games then, the D Y Patil Sports Academy in neighbouring Navi Mumbai, which not only hosted the opening game between 2009 winners Deccan Chargers and Kolkata Knight Riders on March 12 but also all the four knock out games - including the April 25 final between MI and Chennai Super Kings. While CCI has not hosted an IPL game since 2010, the now scratched Pune Warriors' home venue was the DYP in 2011 as their own home ground was under construction on the outskirts of Pune. CCI were not to host any game this year too as per the original schedule drawn up by the Cricket Board before the Eliminator was offered to them after the rescheduling of the play off games.
MI-RR game most tweeted in IPL group stage M UMBAI: The make or break IPL round robin game that witnessed Mumbai Indians making the play-offs after beating Rajasthan Royals by five wickets in a high-scoring thriller on May 25, is the most tweeted match so far in this season's cash-rich tournament. Mumbai Indians entered the IPL playoffs after edging out Rajasthan Royals marginally on net run rate by winning the game with a six in the edge-of-the-seat affair. According to figures from the IPL on the Twitter page of iplt20.Com, MI won the battle on Twitter during the group stage with 360K related tweets till May
25, followed by two-time winners Chennai Super Kings on 248K and Royal Challengers Bangalore with 214K tweets, a release said today. Mumbai is second on the list when it comes to followers this season after CSK. On the all-time followers list for IPL teams, CSK, MI and RCB continue to be the top three teams. But the interesting story this season has been that of group toppers Kings XI Punjab, who have not only moved up on the all-time follower list from 8th to 6th but also registered the highest growth percentage of followers (34.85 per cent) during the group stage this season.
IT’S TIME TO ELIMINATE
Marauding Mumbai face consistent Chennai in IPL eliminator By Divya Suryanarayan
M
UMBAI: After scripting an incredible finish in their last game to earn a place at the playoffs, defending champions Mumbai Indians will now be up against twotime title holders Chennai Super Kings in the IPL eliminator here today. The resurgent MI, who sealed a berth at the play-offs by virtue of a better net run rate after producing an improbable runchase against Rajasthan Royals on Sunday, would be eager to continue in the same vein but they face a daunting task against a formidable side at the Brabourne Stadium. The last edition's winners have certainly come a long way, following the first phase in the UAE where the Rohit Sharma-led team tasted five defeats in a row. Mumbai seems to have put behind its opening woes, with a successful combination of former Australian player Michael Hussey and West Indian Lendl Simmons, who has scored the only century so far. Ambati Rayudu and skipper Rohit Sharma have been in good touch and the middle-order is a force to reckon.

ARIS: Former champion Li Na, the second-seeded Chinese superstar and Australian Open winner, was sensationally dumped out of the French Open in the first round Tuesday, beaten by a tearful Kristina Mladenovic. Li, the 2011 champion, went down 7-5, 3-6, 6-1 to the 103rdranked blonde Frenchwoman, the Roland Garros junior champion in 2009, to suffer her first opening round defeat in Paris in eight visits. The 2hr 06min loss on a windswept and chilly Suzanne Lenglen court saw Li undone by 37 unforced errors. Mladenovic, who was Australian Open mixed doubles champion this year with Daniel Nestor, goes on to face Alison Riske of the United States for a place in the third round. "It's just incredible," said Mladenovic, who was 36 in the world last August. Li's shock defeat means that both Australian Open champions have been knocked out in the first round after Stan Wawrinka's listless defeat on Monday. Also making an early exit on Tuesday was Bulgarian men's 11th seed Grigor Dimitrov who lost 6-4, 7-5, 7-6 (7/4) to giant Croat Ivo Karlovic. Karlovic fired 22 aces and wasn't broken by Dimitrov who won the Bucharest claycourt title this spring and was a semi-finalist at the Rome Masters. Romanian fourth seed Simona Halep reached the second round with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Russia's Alisa Kleybanova and next plays Heather Watson of Britain. The 22-year-old Halep, the winner of seven career titles and a runnerup to Maria Sharapova at the Madrid Open claycourt event this season, raced into a 6-0, 5-0 lead be-
bit relaxed after that, and it was cold. I felt a little bit in my back," said Halep. "But I stayed focused after two games lost, and then I served really well."

NADAL, DJOKOVIC SHINE IN PARIS GLOOM Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic shrugged off the Paris gloom to reach the French Open second round as Japanese ninth seed Kei Nishikori became the tournament's first major casualty. Eight-time champion Nadal, bidding to become the first man to win five Roland Garros titles in a row, beat US wildcard and world number 279 Robby Ginepri 6-0, 63, 6-0. It was Nadal's 60th win at the French Open against just one loss. World number one Nadal kicked off his campaign yesterday on the secondary Suzanne Lenglen court while title rivals Djokovic and Australian Open champion Stan Wawrinka were handed top billing on the main Philippe Chatrier arena. It was a decision blasted as "bizarre" by one fellow professional even though Nadal himself had criticised the state of the newly-laid clay on Chatrier after a weekend practice session. Despite the controversy, it was business as usual for Nadal who fired 27 winners past Ginepri, a semi-finalist at the 2005 US Open whose challenge was undone by 41 unforced errors. "It doesn't matter where I play," said Nadal who next faces either Paul-Henri Mathieu of France or highly-rated Dominic Thiem of Austria.

USTRALIA: Australia coach Ange Postecoglou said his team are heading in the right direction but still have work to do ahead of the 2014 FIFA World Cup after an uninspiring 11 draw against South Africa. While Australia did not play injured first-choice squad members Mile Jedinak, Mark Bresciano, Tom Rogic and Matthew Spiranovic on Monday, there was little to enthuse about before they depart for Brazil on Wednesday. But Postecoglou was keen to put a positive spin on the game, as he trimmed his travelling party to 27 by axing Curtis Good, Adam Sarota and Josh Brillante. "I can't be too critical of the players," he said, after Tim Cahill equalised for the Socceroos in the 14th minute following Ayanda Patosi's opener a minute earlier. "We have worked them really hard for 10 days and when you do that, obviously they're going to
pay a little bit of a price in the game. I think we're heading in the right direction and we'll continue to do so." He added, “There's a lot of work for us to do. But we've got a couple more games and another three weeks (so) hopefully we can keep improving.” The inexperienced Australians, the lowest ranked team in the World Cup at 59, face a daunting task in Brazil against Spain, the Netherlands and Chile in Group B. It is a Socceroos side in transition following the dropping of former captain and defender Lucas Neill and the recent international retirements of goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer, forward Harry Kewell and midfielders Brett Emerton and Brett Holman. Veteran Cahill, 34, said there were some good signs against the injury-depleted South Africans, adding that Australia were working on a plan to be ready for their World Cup opener against Chile.

The cricketing legend said that he was overwhelmed with the support and love. "We decided to name it as Kerala Blasters Football Club because I am known as 'master blaster'. I grew up playing cricket, but I also enjoyed all other games including football. Even in the Indian cricket team and also at Mumbai Indian's football is an integral part during our practice session," said Tendulkar. Tendulkar added that he expects the full support of the people of Kerala and also the state government.
