BMC’s failure to tend to its own buildings sees 13 die in collapse at its housing colony in Dockyard Road

he departing rains brought death and destruction when 13 people perished under the debris of a four-storey building that collapsed at around 5.55 am yesterday in the BMC Colony at Dockyard Road. Braving continuous rains, in a coordinated rescue operation, several agencies managed to rescue 42 people from under the fallen structure, which was 32 years old and on the list buildings needing urgent repair. The repair work could not be executed in time by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and consequently, this delay resulted in disaster for the residents, who are mainly civic employees and their families. There were 21 families living in the ground

plus four storey building that was classified as C2 in the dilapidated buildings list by the civic body, and most victims were in deep sleep when the building collapsed. The Mumbai Fire Brigade called in the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the Thane Fire Brigade for assistance to rescue an estimated 100 people feared trapped under the debris. The joint rescue operations lasted well into the night, with the Fire Brigade and NDRF working as two teams, with axes and cutters being used, along with earth moving machines and dumpers being pressed in to clear the piles of debris. At considerable risk to their lives, some rescuers went under the debris, crawling in and making way by cutting iron rods and other objects. One by one, they successfully managed to evacuate 26 people. After almost 12 hours, authorities began to fear that the trapped victims might succumb to injuries and due to lack of food, water and air. When an NDRF man emerged from a hole carrying a young girl, locals were moved enough to welcome him with shouts of ‘Ganpati Bappa morya.’ The lucky girl was later identified as Minal Ashok Solanki (8). No major injuries were noticed on her body, even as she was rushed to J.J. Hospital.

If you’ve had a failed relationship, you still need to take care of your heart because you are heartbroken. This anthem gives you a message, to take it easy and to listen to your

OPINIONS

Are the state and civic bodies solely responsible for the increasing number of building collapses? Vandana Chibbar Housewife No. We cannot blame the government and the civic body all the time. Many a times the buildings neglect maintenance.

Afzal Hussain PR Executive Yes. State government and civic bodies are responsible for increasing building collapses due to their weak policies and negligence. Parveen Qureshi Media Professional No. The builder lobby is responsible for buildings collapsing, since they use bad quality materials for constructing buildings. Rizwan Ansari Businessman Yes. It may be the state government or civic bodies. They are just sitting to make money, they are not bothered about how people are dying due to their negligence. Arun Kumar Journalist Yes. If the state government and civic bodies make strong laws against the builders, and if the department checks their work without accepting bribes, then these kind of incidents can be stopped.

omorrow is World Heart Day. Have you wondered how healthy your heart is? Have you taken care of your heart despite a hectic lifestyle? If you haven’t, it’s time you started taking care. If you thought heart attacks affect only the old, think again. Youth between the ages of 20 and 40 are falling prey to cardiovascular diseases mainly due to a stressful lifestyle. Working over 12 hours every day and bringing work home have compounded the situation. This, combined with addictions such as smoking, alcohol, junk and processed food, is leading to an unhealthy heart. Singer and composer Leslie Lewis, in association with Fortis Hospitals, has written, composed and sung an anthem ‘Mumbai Ki Dhadkan’ dedicated to the citizens of Mumbai. The lyrics urge Mumbaikars to take care of themselves

through their hectic lifestyles for a trouble free heart. Lewis states that people should not only take care of their heart emotionally but also physically. “Through my songs, be

minder for everyone to wake up to a healthy heart, every day of the week. Using the youth as the core of our initiative, and with the help of colleges in Mumbai, we will hold awareness programs, conduct CPR training sessions and free cardiac check-up camps over the next month. We hope our initiatives will not only motivate people to live a healthy lifestyle, but will also equip them to handle emergency situations and save valuable lives,” states Varun Khanna, Regional Director (East and West), Fortis Healthcare. If you care for your heart, be at the MMRDA grounds tomorrow for the World Heart Concert on the occasion of World Heart Day. Leslie Lewis will not only perform the anthem, but over a dozen youth bands from across the city will also render their own compositions in support of the initiative. At MMRDA Grounds, Bandra (East). Smart Tabs for 100 corporators Cash-strapped MBMC gives nod for purchase at the cost of tax payer By Suresh Golani

A

t a time when the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) is struggling to boost its revenue so it can augment developmental work in the region, the standing committee on Thursday cleared a proposal to hand over 100 high-end Smart Tabs to all the 95 elected representatives and 5 nominated corporators. Cutting across party lines, the committee members gave their nod to invite tenders for the supply of 100 units of the recently launched Samsung Galaxy Tab-3 from the manufacturing company or its authorized dealers. The proposal would cost the civic body Rs.25.50 lakh.

VASTU TIP OF THE DAY

When contacted, municipal commissioner Suresh Kakani said, “Handing over smart tablets is a step towards paperless operations. While intimations, including info on general body meets can be sent via mobile, the idea was also to ensure proper utilization of the various web-based apps introduced by the civic body.” However, social activists believe that the move to buy such high-end gadgets for elected representatives was nothing but a sheer wastage of the tax-payers’ money. Interestingly, most of the corporators, especially members of the coveted standing committee, are already using much expensive gadgets and advanced versions of smart-phones that are going to be ‘gifted’ to them by the corporation. Schools across the city say that students appearing for Elementary and Intermediate drawing examinations will be marked absent for the days they do not attend school to sit for the exams

By Yatin Ingle

A

s if the controversies surrounding the Elementary and Intermediate drawing examinations weren’t enough, the state department of arts has now stated that the students appearing for these exams will be marked absent in their school attendance. The poor infrastructure at the drawing exam centers had already upset the students and parents earlier. The Elementary and Intermediate Grade Examination is held in September every year in Maharashtra. Only those candidates who pass these examinations are admitted to the specialised

higher courses like Commercial Art, Fine Art, and Foundation. These exams are conducted by the state board of arts. As these examinations fall on the working days of their schools, students cannot attend school if appearing for the exams. Schools across the city have stated that the students appearing for the drawing exams will be marked absent in the school attendance as they will be missing the lectures. A student, who did not wish to be named, said, “It is unfair that we students will be marked absent. We are appearing for a state government examination which falls on a working day of the school and we have no op-

tion. The schools should consider the exams and mark our attendance”. Around 4,00,000 students from across the state appear for these exams every year. Every year, students are marked present or their attendance is considered if they are appearing for these exams. G.B. Dhanokar, Director, Maharashtra State Department of Arts said, “The department of arts and the department of school education are two different departments with their own rules and regulations. It’s the decision of the state school department to mark the attendance of the students. Though schools have stated

n order to prevent the misuse of the ‘Izzat Pass’ and to ensure that it actually reaches the people belonging to low income category, the scheme has been reviewed by the Ministry of Railways. “Henceforth, income certificates issued by the authority for issue of Izzat Monthly Season Ticket (MST) should also

Fashion Designer Rohit Varma’s sister finds parcel stolen from airport cargo

By Zuber Ansari

F

ashion designer Rohit Varma’s sister was in for a rude shock when she discovered that a parcel sent to Gurgaon more than 15 days ago had disappeared from the Air Cargo Department at the Airport. Anupama Varma had assigned a parcel containing clothes and a pair of shoes, to be delivered by Maruti Courier Company to her daughter in Gurgaon on September 7. After paying them the requisite charges, the company assured her of the delivery within a week. However when her daughter did

not receive the parcel even after 15 days, Verma contacted the owner of the courier company, who told her that the parcel had been dispatched from his office after the formalities were completed, and if it was missing, it would have to be from the Air Cargo Department. When he checked up with the Air Cargo department and found his suspicions confirmed, he asked top officials from the department to investigate into the matter. Based on the complaint lodged by him, a loader has been arrested by the Vile Parle police in connection with the theft, while a hunt is on for two

more believed to be involved. “I’m not interested in being compensated. The dress was for my daughter and I want it back. I consider this to be the result of negligence on the part of the courier company and the Air Cargo Department,” said Verma. Sources from the Vile Parle Police station have revealed that although other parcels have been recovered from the home of the loader arrested, Verma’s parcel has still not been found. Apparently, the accused and his accomplices have stolen several parcels from the Air Cargo Department before and investigations are on to find out more.

Soon after the Supreme Court verdict directing the ECI to insert a button for None Of The Above (NOTA) on EVMs, the social network went viral, says Prashant Hamine

N

O sooner had the Supreme Court pronounced its verdict yesterday directing the Election Commission of India (ECI) to insert a button for None Of The Above (NOTA) on Electronic Voting Machines (EVM), than the judgement went viral on social networking sites. But sources in the ECI office here have clarified that this is just a question of inserting a button into the EVM. They however, have been quick to dispel the Twitter and Facebook talk that if NOTA votes exceed the number of valid votes polled, then a re-election will have to be held. ECI sources further clarified that there is no provision in the election laws for the counting of these No Votes or the NOTA option. While counting valid votes, these votes are merely taken note off and a separate record is maintained in a register. It is only the validly polled votes that

are counted and not the No Votes. Explaining the procedure an ECI official while speaking to the ADC disclosed that a voter who does not wish to cast his ballot after getting his finger inked with indelible voting ink, has to disclose that he does not want to cast his ballot. His name is registered in the register and an entry against his name is made so as to ensure that no one else tries to cast a bogus vote in his name. Sources disclosed that in Maharashtra during elections normally 90,000 EVMs are used. If there are

more candidates in the poll fray in a particular constituency, more EVMs are required. In such cases normally, the ECI then requires around 1.50 lakh EVMs. Sources pointed out that the provision of No Vote is mentioned in Section 49-O of the Conduct of Election Rules, 1961 on page 72, Chapter II, Part IV of the Manual of Election Law, Volume II. Section 49-O reads as follows: 49-O. Elector deciding not to vote — If an elector, after his electoral roll number has been duly entered in the register of voters in Form 17A and has put his signature or thumb impression thereon as required under sub-rule (1) of rule 49L, decided not to record his vote, a remark to this effect shall be made against the said entry in Form 17A by the presiding officer and the signature or thumb impression of the elector shall be obtained against such remark.

NOTA provision was rejected in 1990 The Dinesh Goswami Committee was of the view that it does not serve any purpose

A

lthough the Supreme Court may have directed the Election Commission of India to include None Of The Above (NOTA) button in the Electronic Voting Machine (EVM), the provision of NOTA -- No Vote or Negative Vote had been out rightly rejected by the Dinesh Goswami committee in its report which was submitted to the Parliament in the 1990s. The Goswami committee was of the view that it (the electoral reform) does not serve any purpose. However, the Law Commission in its 1998 report had advocated

Worst still in countries like Brazil, Australia, Singapore and Peru voting at federal elections is compulsory and not voting without valid reason attracts penalties, even leads to forfeiture of rights over some civic and public services. And in some countries you are jailed if you fail to vote without any valid reason. Some western democracies do allow voters to cast blank ballot papers, but certainly do not give the right of Negative or Neutral Vote to voters. the concept of Negative Vote. But neither the ECI, the Union Law ministry or the Law Commission have articulated as to how the proposed electoral reform should be implemented in practical terms and how to ensure secrecy of identity of the voter who chooses to exercise the option of Negative or Neutral Voting. Another question that begs the answer is that are we in a position to bear additional cost of Re-poll in case NOTA option votes forces a re-poll? Worldwide, state of Nevada in USA and in countries like Australia, Colombia, Greece, Spain and Ukraine have Negative or Neutral Vote in varying forms, but nowhere it causes a re-poll.

tions and Democracy division of The Electoral Commission, UK, the commission had examined the issue of Positive Abstention or the None Of The Above option as part of its 2003 report on Ballot Paper Design. “The system in UK does not allow electors to register their dissatisfaction with candidates in a positive manner. Such a option could lead voters not to vote for Independent candidates or smaller parties,” added Nyack. During the regional consultations on electoral reforms hosted by the union law ministry earlier this year, some speakers had dissented to the view, suggesting that negative voting is not certainly desirable or easily implementable.

Mixed reactions over SC verdict, ECI allays fears T

he Supreme Court verdict over empowering the voters with None Of The Above (NOTA) option button in Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) has predictably evoked mixed reactions from politicians and experts. While the Election Commission of India (ECI) has sought to allay fears expressed in some quarters that the possible use of such an option could lead to reelection. In a statement issued here yester-

day, the ECI has stated that it seems possible to provide Right To Reject option in the forthcoming assembly elections. ECI sources in Maharashtra stated that all that is required is to install a button in the EVM and nothing more. However, the ECI sources here clarified that if NOTA or No Votes exceed valid votes then a re-election is not ordered. Such votes are merely recorded as Tendered Votes in the register separately and not counted. Anant Gadgil, spokesperson MPCC

Speaking to ADC, MPCC spokesperson Anant Gadgil wanted to know what would happen if say NOTA votes exceeded the validly cast votes. “What happens if a person does not want to vote and stays back at home. The question is why would anyone waste time standing for hours in a long line and then go inside just to register a No Vote. Can the country afford repeated elections”, he added. On the other hand, state NCP spokesperson Mahesh

Tapase remarked “We welcome the honourable Supreme Court verdict, it is a right step in the direction of electoral reforms”. Noted expert on EVMs GVL Narasimha Rao stated that the SC verdict will have an influence on the way the elections are held. “However, the question still remains as to what happens if No Votes exceed the validly cast votes. Moreover, the security aspect of the EVM is still a debatable issue”.

Ponder awhile… “Law is nothing other than a certain ordinance of reason for the common good, promulgated by the person who has the care of the community.” — Thomas Aquinas

Lalu will be out of Parliament next week! I

F an ordinance with regard to the Supreme Court verdict had not been issued by the UPA government, Lalu Prasad Yadav would have been disqualified next week and would have lost the right to sit in Parliament. The Supreme Court had decided that if a Member of Parliament was convicted and sentenced to two or more years, he had to quit Parliament. The UPA government, evidently in a bid to save Lalu Prasad Yadav, its friend and supporter in the House issued the ordinance. Apart from Lalu Prasad Yadav, there are other convicted persons in Parliament like Rashid Masood and Shibu Soren. There are pending cases against several other members and whenever a sentence is passed against them, they also will lose their right to sit in the House. If at all the Supreme Court’s order had to be changed, the matter should have been brought before Parliament and a discussion should have taken place. Prominent constitutional lawyers have opined that the ordinance was unconstitutional and should not have been issued. There has been a hue and cry about this by Opposition parties. Both the BJP and the Congress took a delegation to the President and asked him not to approve the ordinance sent by the UPA government. According to reports, the President has reservations about signing the ordinance and he might take some time to consider the matter. This will be unpleasant news for Lalu Prasad Yadav: He is likely to cease to be a Member of Parliament next week.

And it showed that he did not know about the terror strike. He had nothing to do with it. The President of Pakistan is finally responsible for what happens in the country. Zardari however had no hand in it. And he did not even know about it: See that TV clip – it tells all. The power situation in Pakistan is no different from what it was when it was from day one. Nawaz Sharif claims he is the boss, but there is a parallel government which finally takes decisions – particularly with regard to India which it considers an enemy. Nawaz apparently thought that when he took over, he would have the final say, but he was wrong. The Pakistani army does not want close ties and friendship with India. It is apparently convinced that peace talks and diplomatic negotiations will not solve the Kashmir problem. It has put into place a strategy to get courage. The ISI – a spy agency created by it – has been put in charge of anti-India operations in Kashmir. The ISI is continuing to carry out a proxy war in Kashmir. The brutal killing of our soldiers at the LoC was done under orders from the ISI. And the continuing firing along the line has been going on for a long time. Terrorists are being pushed into Kashmir and are almost a part of the army. They take orders from the army. They are regarded as brave patriots who are ready to die. Whenever there are signs that the civilian government wants to have serious negotiations with India, the terrorists – under instructions from the army – carry out some violent operation with a view to scuttle any such happening. We walk into this trap laid by terrorists all the time. It has happened again. Terrorists have attacked an army camp and a police station in Jammu and killed our soldiers and cops: Why was this cruel operation carried out? There has been a talk about our Prime Minister and Nawaz Sharif having talks in New York. And the army carried out a provocative

operation. There were strong statements by opposition leaders that the talks should not be held. Even some Congress leaders voiced the same opinion. India, however, finally decided to have the peace talks despite the provocative act in Jammu. Dr. Manmohan Singh was quite firm about it. He will meet Nawaz Sharif on Sunday. He must have correctly assessed the situation in Pakistan. The right thing would be to help Nawaz Sharif in the country’s fight against terrorists and the army. It is a fact that the army has made the civilian government almost impotent. The talks with Sharif will confirm how he is placed in the power scenario in Pakistan. Nawaz Sharif had declared, before election, that he will eliminate violent terror groups. That has not happened. Evidently, for instance, he cannot do anything about Hafiz Saeed who recently held an anti-India rally where hate speeches were

friend of farmers says: “Let the farmers benefit and get more money. We must export onions”. The friend is none other than Union Food Minister Sharad Pawar. Evidently he is not a friend of hard-hit consumers – that is clear. He does not mind farmers hoarding onions till they get a “fair” price for it. The farmer has a right to do this. Let the middle-class consumers get set to shed tears without onions. It is not so much the farmer who makes money as the wholesale and retail traders and middlemen. They all join together and ensure that onion prices zoom. And if onions are exported, the traders benefit because the quantity of onions available for sale in India is reduced. The UPA food minister is a friend of the farmer and the retail trader. He has not thought about taking any action against the hoarders. The state governments too have not initiated action against hoarders. Hoarding should have been considered an offence. Raids should have been carried out against hoarders and the onions seized. Such a course has been resorted to in the past — successfully. The government seized onions and sold it at prices which the consumer could afford. It is just ridiculous that onions which A.R. Talking peace with Pakistan is pointless OUR Prime Minister’s obstinacy in meeting his Pakistani counterpart, Nawaz Shariff, on the sidelines in New York on Sunday, does not stand to any reason and needs to be dropped as quite a few in his own party are demanding, not to mention the feverish suggestion from the BJP. It does not make any difference to us whether it is Musharraf or Shariff since both of them like many other leaders in our neighbouring country have grown on the staple diet of animosity towards India and their army will not allow anyone to deviate from this mindset. Infiltration in J& K is a well-organised exercise that has been perfected by the extremists with continuous support of all kinds from those in power. Therefore the talks will not help in any way and unfortunately, Dr. Singh is not one of those who can put across his points forcefully and pin the opponent down. And Shariff knows how to tackle this goodygoody Sardar and must have come prepared with his answer anticipating that the infiltration issue will be raised. We have had too much of futile talks and it is high time that General Bikram Sngh was allowed to ‘talk’ the way

Rogues in Parliament NOW that the Government of India has brought in an Ordinance which allows rogues, scoundrels with criminal records to stand for election, let us clap our hands and say “I told you so—the ordinance has arrived with the blessings OF of all the parties.” It was LETTER THE DAY expected. Who would like to give up so much power, so much money, and so much of healthy corruption for a Supreme Court law?? All of us in our country are sitting in our cocoons and allowing this rot to continue. We are losing everything to this bunch of jokers sitting in the halls of Parliament, Legislative assemblies and the babus of bureaucracy who are no better than their bosses! NOTWITHSTANDING the dastardly attack in Jammu by the Paksponsored terrorists, our PM has remained firm in his resolve to tread the path of peace with the hostile theocratic neighbour. Since the two dignitaries are meeting in the Big Apple, the historic understanding to be reached between them can be christened as New York Pact. IT is high time that rapists are given a public hanging. This will be a lesson for perverts not to mess with women or treat them like soft toys. Rapists are like terrorists with a depraved mind. They have no religion. Why don’t they see their own mother or sister in the rape survivor? In majority of cases, rape cases are covered up by the police, as the rapist has political clout or are known to powers that be. It’s high time rape cases are tried by women judges only. ID proof must be checked A NEW feature introduced by the Railways in the recent past requiring the passengers on board the ‘Reserved’ compartments of all the trains to carry their ‘Proof of Identity’ during their travel as the ‘primary capsule’ with a view to broadly ensure ‘security’ aimed at comprehensively avoiding ‘cannibalisation’ of the facility of the ‘Advance Reservation’ in the first place. The pragmatism behind this wellthought out imaginative step, well taken by the passengers at the outset, shall go a long way to serve the intended purpose if and only if judiciously followed and checked by the TTEs on board. It is painfully observed that, on most of the occasions, the TTEs do not ‘ask’ for the ID proof from the passengers on board the trains in the reserved compartments. The casual attitude and seeming refusal on the part of the TTEs in perceiving the intrinsic seriousness of this fine security measure and their lack of strict compliance defeats the very purpose and renders the passengers ‘vulnerable’ in to-day’s sensitive context of complexities. — T.M. EVEN after the dastardly terror attack by Pakistan sponsored terrorists killing our two brave armymen including a Lt. Col. in Samba sector of J&K on September 26, our coward Prime Minister is interested in continuing the fruitless peace process. What a shocking national shame? Has our nation India nothing like self-respect? Is it so because none of those armymen was Manmohan Singh’s nearest, dearest and closest relative or kin? How many more martyrdoms of our brave securitymen will be wasted? Why? Due to greed or fear of death? Such cowards and their backside drivers have no right to ‘govern’ this great nation. India is a sitting duck

FOREARMED: We Indians should learn a lesson from the terror attack in Nairobi and beef up our security system adequately to combat similar attacks on our nation. THE Nairobi tragedy was similar to that of the 26/11 incident in Mumbai which lasted for a couple of days as terrorism has become a global subject and all countries should unite to fight terrorism on a war footing. India is a sitting duck for such incidents and our over-crowded shopping malls, hotels, temples, schools, colleges, buses and trains are prime targets for similar incidents. The Kenyan tragedy should act

as an eye-opener and we need to beef up security at sensitive areas to check similar incidents on our shores. The 26/11 incident is still fresh in our memories in spite of so many years and we should learn a lesson out of it to combat similar attacks on us. Pakistan is a global hub and institution for terrorism that breeds there like bugs and all nations should unite in their fight to wipe out terrorism from global maps. — S.N. Kabra, Goregaon

Prez nod to Land Acquisition Bill N

EW DELHI: The Land Acquisition Bill, passed by Parliament during the Monsoon Session to replace a 119year-old legislation, became a law with President Pranab Mukherjee giving assent to it on Friday. “The Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Bill, 2013 has received the assent of the President of India,” a Law Ministry release said. The historic legislation would provide just and fair compensation to farmers while ensuring that no land could be acquired forcibly. The bill was passed by both Houses of Parliament with overwhelming majority, reports PTI. The new law stipulates mandatory consent of at least 70 per cent for acquiring land for public-private-partnership (PPP) projects and 80 per cent for acquiring land for private companies. The bull was brought as the archaic Act of 1894 suffered from various shortcomings including silence on the issue of resettlement and rehabilitation of those displaced by acquisition of land.

Rahul’s attack on ordinance spurs demand in Cong for withdrawal

N

EW DELHI: Congress vicepresident Rahul Gandhi on Friday dropped a political bombshell on an unsuspecting government, saying that the ordinance that it had sent up to the president to protect convicted lawmakers from disqualification, was “wrong”, should be “torn up and thrown away” and it was time to stop “this nonsense”. With Rahul slamming the ordinance against disqualification of convicted lawmakers, Government is expected to take back the controversial measure, Congress indicated on Friday, making a strong pitch for its rollback, reports PTI. “Rahulji’s opinion is the opinion and the line of Congress... Now Congress party is opposed to this Ordinance. The views of Congress party should always be supreme,” party’s communication department incharge Ajay Maken said when asked about the fate of the ordinance in wake of Rahul’s views and whether it is likely to be withdrawn. Soon after Gandhi denounced the ordinance as “complete nonsense” and which “should be torn up and thrown away”, Special Invitee to Congress Working Committee Anil Shastri said on Twitter, “Rahul Gandhi’s condemnation of the ordinance on convicted MPs/MLAs

MPs/MLAs 2 (sic) retain seats in the midst of an appeal can endanger eroding public faith in democracy”. Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit had also opposed the move. However, the party’s spokespersons have been maintaining a different stand on the issue backing the government’s move on the ordinance. Not surprisingly, when Rahul Gandhi, in an unexpected appearance at a meet-the-press programme at the Press Club being addressed by Maken, slammed the ordinance, a clearly flummoxed Maken had to within minutes completely backtrack from his statement praising the Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi ordinance as “perfect”. addresses the media at Press Club in New Maken sidestepped questions on Delhi on Friday. whether Gandhi’s remarks meant a makes the GOI stand on this unten- “rebellion” against the government able & it must immediately withdraw or a public snub to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his governit.” In another tweet, he said, “to save ment.’ “Rahul Gandhi is our leader. itself from further embarrassment on His views are views of the Congress its controversial ordinance, GOI party. WASHINGTON: Reacting to Congress party vice president Rahul Gandhi's comment on the controversial ordinance to protect convicted lawmakers, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said on Friday the issues raised will be considered on his return to India. Rahul ji’s opinion is the opinion and the line of of Congress...Now Congress party is opposed to this Ordinance,” he said. Party spokesperson Raj Babbar had earlier hailed the Ordinance saying it was aimed at “protecting the dignity of the Constitution”. However, voices of dissent were raised with party general secretary Digvijay Singh saying that it would have been better had there been a political consensus on the ordinance issue.

‘SC verdict on negative vote a tsunami for political parties’ N

EW DELHI: The Supreme Court verdict holding that voters have right to reject candidates contesting polls got a thumbs up from a cross section of the society who termed it as an important development in ‘evolution’ of India’s democracy. Former IPS officer and team Anna member Kiran Bedi said it was “a beginning of a new India” and a “tsunami for political parties”. “SC order of right to reject com-

ing on d heels of transparency in accounts, decriminalisation of elected, is a tsunami for Political Parties! “It’s a Beginning of a new India. Decline of criminal, corrupt, communal politics. Thanku SC and Thanku media for letting ppl voices heard/seen (sic),” Bedi tweeted. The Supreme Court, in a landmark judgement, on Friday held that citizens have right to cast negative vote rejecting all candidates

contesting polls, a decision which would encourage people not satisfied with contestants to turn up for voting. The court directed the Election Commission to provide ‘none of the above’ (NOTA) option at the end of the list of candidates in the electronic voting machines (EVMs) and the ballot papers to allow voters exercise the option of rejecting all those contesting polls. Supporting the verdict Kamal A

Mitra Chenoy, professor at JNU’s Centre for Comparative Politics and Political Theory, said it would reduce alienation of voters who usually don’t come to vote as they are not satisfied with the candidates. “The extra confidence of the political parties would be dented with this decision. People should know what their power is,” he said. Actor Anupam Kher, who had actively participated in Anna Hazare’s

movement for implementation of Janlokpal Bill, hailed the decision and said it was a time to remember Hazare, who started it. “Great News. Time to remember the man who started it all - Anna Hazare. Jai Ho,” Kher tweeted. The court had also observed that the concept of negative voting would bring a systemic change in the election process as the political parties will be forced to project clean candidates in polls. T the present, when India is caught up in the ‘safety of women’ issue, Denis Villeneuve’s Prisoners holds an added relevance and sense of terror. what happens on Thanksgiving day, is a parent’s worst nightmare come true — their little girls go out to play and vanish. The detective on the case, Loki (Jake Gyllenhaal), is a lonely, driven man, who has never failed to solve a case. There was a suspicious camper parked in the neighbourhood, and the driver is a weird man, Alex (Paul Dano), who lives with his weirder aunt (Melissa Leo). There is no proof that Alex is the kidnapper, but Keller believes he is guilty, abducts, imprisons and tortures him. That Keller could be predisposed to violence is established in the opening scene, in which he prods his son to hunt a deer. In the tradition of the classic, grim thriller, fingers point at other suspects. The script twists, teases and torments the viewer, giving no hints about how the story will end. The characters are carefully built up, and their unpredictability is one of the reasons why the film retains its grip on the viewer. Shot with a bleak beauty by the great Roger Deakins, the mood enhanced by Icelandic composer Johann Johannsson haunting score, the film is ultimately let down by some plot conveniences and its inordinate length. No viewer wants to feel like a prisoner in the moviehall seat. The questions the film raises, particularly about vigilante justice, are what many Indians have been grappling with after the two gruesome rape incidents that triggered widespread protests on the streets. If a loved one’s life was in danger, would that justify hijacking the law and the use of brutality to get a confession? The film is intense, disturbing and suspenseful, carefully controlled by Villeneuve (director of the Oscar-nominated Incendies in 2010), who never lets the tension in Aaron Guzikowski’s script flag, even if takes some emotional manipulation and red herrings to do so. The two male leads — Jackman and Gyllenhaal are brilliant, giving their conflicted characters the full force of their talent and star power. Prisoners is worth watching, but not for the faint of heart.

NTERESTING... in 2154, the President of an elite space colony is a Patel, presumably of Indian origin. But he is bullied around by the Defence Secretary, who is a woman. It is in little script decisions like this, that you see Hollywood acknowledging Indians and also the growing power of women. South African director Neill Blomkamp, who got his cult reputation with District 9, gets a bash at a big budget, star vehicle Elysium, which is not necessarily a good thing. The money can buy state-ofthe-art special effects, but it is a bit short in the ideas department. Or rather, the idea of the underprivileged trying to break into a rich people’s Utopia, is rather elementary, with no attempt at layering in social or political comment. In the next century, when Earth is too “diseased, polluted and overpopulated” for the rich, they create a clean, green, sunny and healthy

AMERICAN BEAUTY Rs. 499 Cast: Kevin Spacey, Annette Bening, Thora Birch, Mena Suvari, Wes Bentley, Peter Gallagher Directors: Sam Mendes

B

OLLYWOOD has a way with remakes and it is no wonder that American Beauty was the basis for the 2006 controversial film Nishabd starring late actress Jiah Khan who played a Lolita figure opposite Indian cinema legend Amitabh Bachchan. Take a look at the original that promises moments of bliss. Lester (Kevin Spacey) is a magazine writer who is suddenly left without a job. Even while he was working, he was always seen as worthless in the eyes of his family. In the opening lines of the film he reveals that he’ll be dead in a year’s time. Why, or how, is uncertain, but it almost seems quite real once you watch this movie. We then have his nagging, successful realtor wife Carolyn (Annette Bening) and his daughter Jane (Thora Birch) who want everything that an American family can hope for. Lester has decided to make some changes in his life, after enduring many years of marriage to his materialistic and bossy wife. Despite being depressed he does not really show it. He suddenly gets infatuated with his daughter’s school friend cheerleader Angela (Mena Suvari). With his mind now free, Angela turns his life upside down. He displays calm and this

transformation is the turning point in his life. He also befriends a young, weed-dealing neighbor Ricky (Wes Bentley) who is in love with Jane. There’s also Carolyn who’s into an adulterous relationship with business rival Buddy Kane (Peter Gallagher). Lester deals with four lives and with all the turmoil, something drastic is bound to happen. Lester reminds us that he will die within a year. Will this come true, who will do it? All the four characters in the film create the real story. The 1999 romance drama combines comedy, melodrama, suburban angst and great acting, direction, writing and cinematography. It is no wonder that the film won five Oscars including Best Picture and Best Actor. Don’t miss the Special Features and an exclusive feature booklet. — By Verus Ferreira

mainly for their magical healing pods that literally cure everything from cancer to broken bones to blown-off skull. But up there, a Snow Queen meets Cruella de Vil Defence Secretary Delacourt (Jodie Foster in her worst role, ever), overrules President Patel (Faran Tahir) and keeps shooting down the desperate

trespassers. When Max gets a lethal dose of radiation at his factory and is given five days to survive, only a trip to Elysium can save him. Spider offers help in exchange of a job that involved kidnapping the boss of the evil Armadyne corporation, and stealing the technology that runs Elysium. Mission partially succeeds, but Delacourt unleashes a mad agent Kruger (Sharlto Copley) on to Max. To add some soft female power is Max’s childhood friend, Frey (Alice Braga) and her irritatingly cute daughter, who will die of leukemia, unless she can be taken to Elysium. It’s not hard to keep ahead of this

AVERAGE GOOD VERY GOOD EXCELLENT

script — of course everyone lands up at Elysium’s gleaming headquarters, and the action explodes all over. The production design is marvellous, but the film is a well-paced but otherwise tedious sci-fi action adventure, that does not amount to anything much after all the metal and glass crunching mayhem is done. This kind of dystopian future movie has been done many times before, and Elysium’s got generic stamped on it. Not to mention the laughble Hollywoodian socialism that says that if every illegal is made legal by some computer jugglery, all problems will be solved! If so, get the US to open its borders.

When there is redevelopment of a tenanted pagdi property, the landlord usually makes a deal with the developer and stakes his claim of his 33 per cent. Pagdi having been legalised by law, what are the rights of tenants and landlords? What is the stake of a landlord opting for his property going in for redevelopment? — Chetan Rajkumar Where redevelopment is concerned, very often, in the island city particularly in olden parts, there’s reference to pagdi properties. The consideration paid to a landlord as a fine, premium or consideration (pagdi) has been legalised by Section 56 of Rent Control Act, 1999. It is now also lawful for a tenant to receive any amount in consideration of the relinquishment or transfer of his tenancy. Incidentally, in the Rent Act, 1974 giving or receiving pagdi in cash was held ‘illegal’ hence there was extensive use of black money. Now too, in cities like Mumbai, for the transfer of tenancy, 33 per cent of the amount in transaction is paid in cash to the landlord to effect the transfer of tenancy or assignment. If one wants to sell his home for Rs nine lakhs, he will have to pay Rs three lakh of the amount to the landlord. The purchaser of land in a pagdi system is said to be a tenant and has limited rights because a very nominal rent is collected by the landlord and receipt given accordingly. However, when there is redevelopment of the said property, the landlord usually makes a deal with the developer and stakes his claim of his 33 per cent and accordingly takes profit out of the property permanently. Those who are in accommodation or in possession of the said property after redevelopment become the sole owners of the said premises. Section 56 of the Maharashtra Rent Control Act, 1999

reads as follows: Sec. 56: Rights of Tenant and Landlord to receive lawful charges – Notwithstanding anything contained in this Act, it shall be lawful for 1) The tenant or any person acting or purporting to act on behalf of the tenant to claim or receive an sum or any consideration, as a condition of the relinquishment, transfer or assignment of his tenancy or any premises; 2) The landlord or any person acting or purporting to act on behalf of the landlord to receive any fine, premium or other like sum deposit or any consideration on respect of the grant, or renewal of a lease of any premises, or for giving his consent to the transfer of a lease to any other person.

TENDERING HAS ITS OWN SET OF ADVANTAGES What is the benefit of tendering? Also, should Earnest money be collected from bidding parties and why? — Rakhi Shah For a society keen on opting for redevelopment, advertising in more than two prominent newspapers will ensure it gets a range of choicest offers from reputed developers. While issuing a Tendering Notice, the society should ensure that earnest money is called from bidding parties. This will ensure a reduction in unwanted and non-interested parties bidding and save on everyone’s time. Earnest Money can be collected by the way of pay orders or cheques. With the stakes involved, there’s a huge amount of competition among bidders.

Hence, offers should be invited in sealed tender forms. Since all the specifications and terms and conditions are the same for all bidders, it becomes easy for the society to compare and evaluate all of them on merit. While evaluating tenders, the bid carpet area, as measured by the Architect of the society shall be detailed clearly. Also, whether the bidder can measure the same at their expense should be specified clearly. The redevelopment project shall be carried out in the society’s name making it safer for the society in case of problems faced by developers. It also helps the society in case it wants to change or replace the developer from the said project. There should be a directive that “should any changes be made in the plan, the society’s permission shall be a prerequisite.” This should deter developers from carrying out any illegal construction in redevelopment project without the knowledge of the society and beyond the decided plan. Usually, in the tender document, a detailed methodology of work is laid out under the head of Technical Specifications. Also, material to be used shall be spelt out with brand names to avoid any confusion. Commercial terms such as Bank Guarantees, Temporary Accommodation, Cost of Additional Area, Basic Rates and Penalties have to be clearly detailed in the tender document leaving no ambiguity when tender is finally floated. A tender is a legal document that’s binding to both the parties. Consequences and penalties vis-à-vis delays in performance or part performance too should be detailed in the tender itself.

TetraVex is a challenging brain teaser. The object of the game is to fill the grid with the tiles so that the patterns on the adjacent edges of each tile match, much like aligning domino tiles. The object of the game is to place all the tiles in the grid so that the figures on the adjacent edges of each tile match. You can place any tile anywhere in the grid, but you cannot place a tile in the grid if its edges do not match all of its neighbors. Find a digit that occurs only once on a given puzzle. You know that this digit must lie along the outer edge of the grid, since there are no other tiles that can match it. You can simplify solving by cutting out the nine squares and juggling them in the grid.

IN BRIEF Jamaica's Hue banned 9 months for doping

ZURICH: FIFA suspended Jamaica player Jermaine Hue for nine months on Thursday after he tested positive for a banned substance at a World Cup qualifying match. Team doctor Carlton Fraser was banned from football for four years for administering the drug, dexamethasone, FIFA said Thursday. "This suspension covers all types of matches, including domestic, international, friendly and official fixtures," FIFA said. Hue, a 35-year-old midfielder with Jamaican club Harbour View, tested positive after Jamaica's 2-0 loss against Honduras in Tegucigalpa on June 11. Hue was an unused substitute in the match, though all squad members can be selected among the two players typically chosen at random to provide samples.

Indian boys register first win in junior Davis Cup

SAN LUIS POTOSI, MEXICO: Sumit Nagal won the second singles and then combined with Sahil Deshmukh to win the doubles as India defeated Argentina 2-1 for their first win the Junior Davis Cup final. Top seeded Russia and Spain made it to the quarter-finals from Group A. After Garvit Batra had lost the first singles 4-6 4-6 to Franco Capalbo, Nagal brought India back with victory in the second singles. Nagal beat Agustin Torreano 6-4 6-3 to level the scores and then teamed up with Deshmukh to defeat the Argentine combination of Juan Pablo Ficovich and Agustin Torreano 4-6 6-3 6-0 in the doubles. India now face Norway in the 9-12 place play-offs.

Brazil audit shows Rio Games preparations off target

RIO DE JANEIRO: An audit into the finances of the 2016 Rio Olympics shows preparations are behind schedule with earmarked state cash largely unspent, Brazilian press reported Thursday. The Brazilian sports ministry has set aside a budget of 1.6 billion reais ($712 million) towards the staging of South America's first Olympics and the Paralympics thereafter. But an audit by the Brasilia-based national auditing office, TCU, has shown that only five percent of that funding has been spent. The report also accused the Public Olympic Authority, a public consortium set up to oversee delivery of the Games, of poor coordination.

BCCI in quandary after Supreme Court order

N

EW DELHI: The Supreme Court might have asked him not to take charge even on winning the elections but N Srinivasan is all set to go ahead with his audacious bid for an extended term as BCCI President when the under-fire Cricket Board gathers for its Annual General Meeting in Chennai on Sunday. Hearing a plea by the Cricket Association of Bihar, which sought to stop Srinivasan from contesting, the Supreme Court today allowed the Tamil Nadu strongman to fight it out but told him not to take charge even if he is elected till further orders. "In case Srinivasan is elected as President, he will not take charge until further orders," a bench comprising Justices A K Patnaik and J S Kehar said. The bench took strong exception to Srinivasan still holding charge of BCCI when his son-inlaw Gurunath Meiyappan has been charge sheeted in connection with the IPL spot-fixing case. But a defiant Srinivasan said he would stand for election as "nobody" has stopped him from doing it. "Nobody has stopped me from contesting elections and attending the AGM. Before taking my comments, kindly go through the observations made by the honourable Supreme Court. "It states clearly that I have not been stopped from attending the AGM

and I am also going to contest the election, why shall I not contest the elections?" fumed Srinivasan. Srinivasan already has his back against the wall after being forced to step aside when his son-in-law and Chennai Super Kings Team Principal Gurunath Meiyappan's name cropped up in the IPL betting scandal. Srinivasan's company India Cements owns CSK, a two-time IPL champion side. Despite not having anything against his name, Srinivasan has been under tremendous pressure to re-

Watson not thinking of Australian captaincy

J

AIPUR: Shane Watson could be in contention for the captaincy job of Australia if Michael Clarke misses out the limited overs series against India beginning on October 10 but the all-rounder said that he was not thinking about the leadership role. Watson sought to evade a question when he was indirectly asked if he was ready to captain the Australian side if Michael Clarke misses out the India series due to fitness issues. "I am batting and bowling and have a big role in the team. I am not thinking about captaincy and I am happy to contribute with the bat and ball," Watson, who is playing for Rajasthan Royals in the Champions League Twenty20, said. "Michael Clarke is an experienced player and we would miss him if he is unable to come to India. He has vast xperience and is a good player of spin," said Watson who has stepped down as vice-captain of Australia. "We (Australia) played good cricket but few bad moments resulted in our defeat (in the Ashes). We could have won a few games but it was disappointing that we could not do it. The last six months since our tour of India have been good.

sign on moral grounds but has remained defiant, challenging every dissenting voice within and outside the BCCI. In fact, Srinivasan's election for an added one-year term as BCCI President is a real possibility this Sunday given that he has the backing of all the six units of south zone, whose turn it is to nominate a candidate for the top job. But given the technicalities arising out of today's order, the Board can hardly afford to have a President who cannot take charge immediately as interim chief Jagmohan Dalmiya does not have any signing authority. Dalmiya has been running the Board's day-today affairs but Srinivasan has remained the signing authority despite stepping aside. As per the court order, Srinivasan cannot discharge the Board President's duties even if he is re-elected on Sunday which means the Board will not have any functional head. The situation thus becomes quite peculiar opening up some new options for the BCCI, which might consider giving signing authority to Dalmiya as interim chief as Srinivasan remains the preferred choice of South Zone. The 68-year-old Srinivasan is through with the regular two-year term and is eyeing an extended one-year tenure. The astute businessman has been going through a rough time ever since the IPL spot-fixing scandal broke out. Meiyappan, whom Srini-

I got death threats but decided to fight on: Verma

N

EW DELHI: Elated by the Supreme Court order restraining N Srinivasan from taking charge as BCCI President even if he is elected in the AGM, Cricket Association of Bihar Secretary Aditya Verma alleged that he braved death threats to fight the legal battle against the Tamil Nadu strongman. "I am 300 percent happy with the verdict of the honourable Supreme Court. This is a lonely battle that I had to fight against a powerful sports administrator like Mr Srinivasan. I had full faith in judiciary," Verma told PTI. Asked that whether he can claim total victory as the court has not debarred Srinivasan from contesting the BCCI elections, Verma said, "The court has said that Srinivasan can't take charge as the case is pending." "Now it's upto the Board members to decide whether they can allow Srinivasan to contest the elections as he has no power to discharge the President's functions." "I received a life threat at 6:16 pm yesterday. An anonymous caller told me to withdraw the case but for me it was a matter of truth," claimed Verma.

vasan described as merely a cricket enthusiast, was recently charge-sheeted by the Mumbai Crime Branch adding to the pressure on the BCCI chief. But Srinivasan has remained steadfast, insisting that he has got nothing to do with Meiyappan and that law will take its own course in the matter.

Spot-fixer Westfield reveals prison torment L ONDON: Former Essex pace bowler Mervyn Westfield has revealed his torment at spending four months in prison after being found guilty of spot-fixing. Westfield was jailed in 2012 and banned from professional cricket for five years and club cricket for three for accepting ÂŁ6,000 (USD 9,606, 7,124 euros) to concede more than 12 runs in an over in a 40-over match against Durham in September 2009. The 25-year-old served his time in Belmarsh prison in south-east London and he admits the whole experience was a nightmare that has scarred him for life. "They took me down to the room, handcuffed me and put me in the security van," he said in a film recorded by the Professional Cricketers' Association. "I felt so scared. You are in this little box and you can't

look outside the windows of the van because they were blacked out. Personally I didn't know anything about Belmarsh but my solicitors ran it by me. They said it was double A category jail and the most secure jail in Europe. All the high risk people go there. I was wondering why am I going there? "My time in Belmarsh was hell for me. They tell you what you can do and what you can't do. What time you eat and what time you go back into the room, what time you can come out for exercise, what time you have a shower. I didn't shower any more." With his professional career in tatters, Westfield, who pleaded guilty to a charge of accepting corrupt payments in a hearing at the Old Bailey in January 2012, now works as a shop assistant in a Tesco supermarket in east London.

CSK EYE SEMIS SPOT, TAKE ON HAPLESS BRISBANE IN CLT20

ANCHI: Unbeaten so far, table-toppers Chennai Super Kings will eye a hat-trick of victories to seal the semifinal spot when they square off against winless laggards Brisbane Heats of Australia in their third Group B match of the Champions League Twenty20 here today. The contrast could not have been more in the two teams' fortunes. While Chennai are on top, Brisbane are at the bottom of the points table. Chennai, IPL runners-up this year, are among the favourites to lift the Champions League for a second

time after clinching the trophy in 2010. And the sheer depth in the lineup was displayed last night when Suresh Raina smashed a quickfire half-century while skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni produced a belligerent unbeaten knock of 63 for CSK to post a stunning 202 on the board against Sunrisers Hyderabad. In fact, their batting firepower that gives CSK a definitive edge over Brisbane. With in-form batsmen like Dhoni and Raina, CSK can take any opposition line-up to task. But a lot more would be expected of the

likes of Mike Hussey, who showed some spark in his 21-ball 23 in the previous match. Not to forget allrounder Ravindra Jadeja, who hasn't quite got a chance to dazzle so far. Last night, Raina's 57-ball 84 was perfectly matched by Dhoni's pyrotechnics as the hard-hitting local skipper broke the spirits of the Sunrisers bowlers with his ruthless batting display. Such was the brutality that neither speed nor spin provided any challenge to Dhoni as he decorated his 19-ball knock with an astonishing eight sixes.

All six Indians miss cut in AsiaPacific Panasonic Open

OSAKA, JAPAN: It was a disastrous outing for Indians golfers here as none of the six starters were able to make the halfway cut at the Asia-Pacific Panasonic Open golf tournament here. Three of the Indians missed the cut by one shot at the USD 1.48 million event sanctioned by the Asian Tour and Japan Golf Tour. Anirban Lahiri, who shot a 79 on first day went down to 68 in the second, but even that was not enough. Jyoti Randhawa (76-71) and Digvijay Singh (76-71) were also eliminated with totals of 147, just one outside the cut mark of 146. C Muniyappa (79-70), Shiv Kapur (75-75) and Himmat Rai (76-74) also fell by the wayside.

Vidit Gujarathi wins world junior bronze

PUNE: Lakshya-Vascon supported Vidit Gujarathi became the first player from Maharashtra to win a World Junior chess championship medal when he held eventual champion Yu Yangyi of China to a draw in the 13th and penultimate round to finish third in Kocaeli, Turkey, on Thursday. The country’s 30th Grandmaster, who had to overcome an indifferent start to the tournament, was tied with GM Cori Jorge of Peru at 9.5 points but clinched the bronze medal thanks to a better tie-break score. Gujarathi has now joined the list of elite Indians winning medals in the world junior champions starting from a gold medal won by world champion V Anand in 1987, gold by Harikrishna in 2004, gold by Abhijeet Gupta in 2008 and bronze by Sahaj Grover in 2011.

Yuvraj Singh scored 84 runs.

I

NDORE: Yuvraj Singh bludgeoned his way to a 56-ball 84 and gave the national selectors another timely reminder of his worth even as Abhishek Nayar slammed a 39-ball 75 to take India Blue to the final with a 11run win over India Red in the NKP Salve Challenger Series here. Sent into bat, India Blue posted an imposing 345 for four before bowling out the opposition for 334 in 49.5 overs at the Holkar Cricket Stadium. The match was as good as over for India Red with

the Yusuf Pathan-led side needing 38 in the last two overs. However, Umesh Yadav and Shabhaz Nadeem hit a flurry of boundaries to nearly lead their side to what would have been an improbable win. They collected 15 runs off Bhuvneshwar Kumar to bring the equation down to 23 of six balls. R Vinay Kumar was smashed for a six and a four before Umesh Yadav lost the steam. Earlier, both Yuvraj and opener P Akshat Reddy scored 84 runs each, but

the left-handed skipper enjoyed a strike rate of over 150 as he toyed with the India Red bowlers hitting 11 boundaries, including five sixes. Reddy's knock came off 96 balls and was studded with five fours and two shots over the fence. Nayar then tormented the rival bowlers with his fiery unbeaten knock that came off a mere 39 balls, and had a strike rate that was close to 200. Yuvraj and Nayar plundered 151 runs in just 13 overs in their fourth wicket partnership, which ended with the former's run out in the last over of the innings. Yuvraj now has one century and three half-centuries in his last five matches. He was handed a lifeline by the BCCI by including him in the India A team for the series against the West Indies A. India Red skipper Yusuf Pathan's decision to invite the Blues to bat seemed all right as they had kept the rival batsmen under a tight leash and had also scalped Naman Ojha cheaply at the start. However, their joy was shortlived as Reddy found a good partner in Manish Pandey, who contributed 70 off 86 balls with the help of seven fours and two sixes. The duo put the side batting first in the driver's seat with a mix of determined and fearless batting. They raised a 143-run stand for the second wicket, setting the stage for Yuvraj and Nayar to rip apart the bowlers in the slog overs. The two batsmen hammered the bowlers all around the park as India Blue scored 162 runs in the last 15 overs. Nayar hit six fours and four sixes in his knock. None of the Red bowlers could make an impact and pacer Suraj Yadav was the most expensive as he bled 84 runs in his 10 overs.

Iyer’s ton help India colts enter final of quadrangular series

VISAKHAPATNAM: Shreyas Iyer smashed a quick-fire century to help Indian colts beat Australia by 18 runs in a rain-curtailed encounter and enter the finals of the Under-19 Quadrangular tournament here. With this victory, India U-19 rounded off their league engagements unbeaten, winning all three of their matches. They had earlier beaten South Africa and Zimbabwe. Iyer sizzled with the bat as he hit 109 off just 67 balls, studded with 10 fours and six sixes to steer the hosts to a massive 321 for five. He also stitched a valuable 170-run partnership for the fourth wicket with Ricky Bhui (66 67b, 6X4, 2X6) to take the team past the 300-run mark. Even opener Akhil Herwadkar chipped in with a half-century to contribute to the team's success.

We’re not expecting a miracle, says Ashwini Sindhu back N in top 10 as runners-up with Arathi Sara Sunil in the 35th PSPB Inter Unit Badminton Tournament. "Me and Jwala will be training for two weeks with (Mohammad) Arif sir and then start playing at the Denmark Open, French Open and Bitburger Open. For us the important thing right now is to get back on the court and start playing together," she added. The world championship bronze medallist pair had separated after Jwala decided to take a sabbatical following the London Olympics last year. Since then, Ashwini has been playing with Pradnya Gadre. But just before the Indian Badminton League, Ashwini and Jwala decided to get back together.

EW DELHI: With Commonwealth and Asian Games coming up next year, Ashwini Ponnappa and Jwala Gutta might be joining hands once again but the celebrated women's doubles pair is not expecting any miracles when they take the courts in Denmark Open Super Series Premier from October 15-20. One half of the Commonwealth Games gold medallist pair, Ashwini said they would look to test themselves at the Denmark Open and are not thinking about their past record much. "We have been successful in the past but we are not expecting miracles from ourself straight away. We want to take things calmly, as it comes," said Ashwini, who ended

Eves win bronze in Asia Cup hockey K

UALA LUMPUR: Indian eves at least has something to cheer about after missing out on a berth in next year's World Cup as they defeated China via penalty shootout to clinch the bronze medal in the eighth women's Asia Cup hockey tournament. India, who needed to win the tournament to qualify for next year's World Cup to be held at The

Hague, Netherlands, edged past China 3-2 in the shootout after both the teams were locked 2-2 at the regulation time. By virtue of this win, the Indians managed to avenge their 0-1 defeat to the Chinese in the pool stages of the tournament. India dominated proceedings in the first half and scored two field goals through Anuradha Devi Thok-

chom (16th minute) and Vandana Katariya (31st) to go into the breather with a comfortable 2-0 lead. The Indian girls managed to hold on to their lead after the lemon break and denied any openings to the nimble-footed Chinese till the 51st minute. China pulled one back in the 51st minute through Yan Yan's field goal to liven up the match.

NEW DELHI: Top Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal was steady at number four even as rising star P V Sindhu regained her place in the top 10 after climbing two places in the latest world badminton rankings. Sindhu, who had dropped to the 12th spot last week, came back to the top 10, despite losing to Akane Yamaguchi in the Japan Open's second round in Tokyo. Parupalli Kashyap and RMV Gurusaidutt were at 14th and 24th spot, while Ajay Jayaram also moved up four places to be placed at 26th in the rankings. H S Prannoy and K Srikanth too have been rewarded for their splendid show at the Japan Open as they jumped 14 and seven places respectively to reach the world number 42nd and 32nd spot. Anand Pawar and Sourabh Varma too improved three places each to reach the 34th and 43.
