The festival was being celebrated across the metropolis and amid fervour that underscores indomitable spirit of an average Mumbaikar shrugging off the drudgery associated with daily life. Numerous teams of 'Govindas' or revellers could be seen on city streets struggling to form a human pyramid to reach the earthen pot filled with curd, dangling from certain height and to break it. ping music driving the adrenaline rush, Bollywood celebrities too have let their hair down at the festival. Actor Shahrukh Khan was seen shaking his leg at the 'dahi handi' festival organised by MNS MLA Ram Kadam in Ghatkopar. A cash reward has been announced for Govinda mandal which manages to break the pot by forming a nine-layer pyramid. Minister of State for Housing Sachin Ahir has organised the event at Jamboree Maidan in Worli. Not much behind to its opponent to score political mileage, BJP has distributed masks and T-shirts bearing the image of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, to 30,000 Govinda teams, apparently to project him as the party's prime ministerial candidate. Women Govindas too are not lagging behind their male counterparts in forming human pyramids as they are seen enduring the challenge with gaiety. Taking into account the mishaps associated with the festival, BMC has already announced that it will provide financial assistance to Govindas in case of accident. The disaster control cell of the BMC said that as many as 167 Govindas were injured in various parts of the city and are treated at hospitals. Police have beefed up security to prevent any untoward incident.

Swords for female govindas

n the wake of the recent rape of a photo-journalist in the Shakti Mills compound in Lower Parel, most dahi handi mandals have been expressing outrage and have portrayed messages condemning violence against women Going one-up on all this, the Shiv Sena went ahead and distributed swords to the female govindas, claiming it was for their self-protection and safety. In January this year, the Sena had planned to distribute knives to women as a ‘haldi-kumkum’ gift on the birth anniversary of Bal Thackeray on January 23. These were Chinese knives, which can be folded and kept in small purses, and the party had planned to distribute 18,500 knives of them across the city through their shakhas. Issues arose after several government authorities stated that it was against the law, as only a knife with a blade below six inch in size is permitted. The Chinese knives had blades of just three inches, but the plan was shelved. The ADC spoke to Abhijeet Pendse of the Shiv Sena, who said, “The swords are a symbol of warriors and of bravery. With the rise in cruel rapes and crime against women, these swords are a gift to help them fight against those harming them.”

n less than a fortnight, sleuths of the Thane (Rural) police have claimed to have cracked the sensational break-in where burglars had decamped with gold ornaments worth more than Rs.60 lakh from a showroom in Naya Nagar in Mira Road on August 16. Two people, including an employee of the showroom, were arrested from their native village in Rajasmand, Rajasthan. The audacious break-in took place at Meera Jewellers in Chandresh Arcade in Mira Road. The accused, who entered the shop by opening the shutters with duplicate keys, drilled a hole into the vault and decamped with two kilos of gold ornaments. They also took away

the digital video recorder of the Close Circuit Television Camera (CCTV) installed inside the shop so that the police would find no clues against them. Initial findings pointed towards the involvement of an employee identified as Chagan Lachela who had left for his native village in Rajasthan a week before the crime. Moreover, the mobile phone of the suspect was mysteriously out of reach ever since. A police team led by PSI Sharad Zine, tracked Lachela from his house. After rounds of sustained interrogation, Lachela confessed to the crime and also revealed the names of his three accomplices who happen to be natives of the same village, police said. While, the police

Again in 2011, just outside Jaya Talkies in Borivli (West), unidentified assailants fired, but Ganda managed to survive unhurt. Investigations revealed that it was a self-orchestrated attack planned by Ganda himself, said sources in the crime branch.

Bookie and fixer Ajay Gosalia, who was shot at outside a mall in Malad West, antagonized all those he worked with By Neel Shah

W

ednesday’s sensational firing on Ajay Gosalia is strongly believed to be the handiwork of Mumbai’s underworld, which was approached by the land mafia of the western suburbs. Gosalia, popularly known as Ajay Borivali aka Ajay Ganda in the city’s bookie circles as well as underworld, is a noted fixer, well known cricket bookie, is known for his proximity to the city police’s encounter specialists and is a ruthless land-grabber, according to a highly placed crime branch officer. Recently, Ganda gained popularity, particularity in the western suburbs, by boasting about his proximity to a deputy commissioner of police (DCP), attached to the specialized branch of Mumbai police. If sources in the crime branch are to be believed then, during the recently

Ajay Gosalia aka Ajay Ganda

According to a Shiv Sena MP, requesting anonymity, “Till early 2000, Ganda was very close to the Bal Thackeray family. However, he had started misusing his proximity to the family and exploited several builders by grabbing lands. In fact, he had cheated a few family friends of the Thackerays to the tune of a few crores. Following this, the Thackeray family severed connections with him and the Shiv Sena’s mouthpiece, Saamana, carried a story along with Ganda’s photo, which clearly stated that the Thackerays had no connection with him. ended IPL-6 season, Ganda squealed on rival bookies and the police were successfully able to arrest several big time bookies. This, added the sources, helped Ganda, who was operating via other bookies, to operate his illegal betting business smoothly, as most of his rival bookies either went underground or were behind bars. Moreover, Ganda is known for settling disputes and fixing deals and also for his access to all the underworld gangs of Mumbai. Presently, he is believed to be a close aide of gangster Chhota Shakeel.

Ganda’s life, and attempts to snuff it In early 80s, Ganda, who used to stay in a chawl in Borivali, came in contact with a gangster named Nandu Kadam. The latter was the friend of Chhota Rajan, the don in exile. In 1983, Ganda became friends with Rajan, through Kadam. In the 80s, Ganda was introduced to gangster-turnedterrorist Dawood Ibrahim, who had fled the country in 1984, by Rajan. It was Ganda

who used to pass on the information about the city’s businessmen as well as builders in the western suburbs to the D-gang, who then would extort money from them, informed sources in police. In the 90s, apart from several gangsters, Ganda was a

friend figure to most of the encounter specialists, including the recently acquitted cop, Pradeep Sharma. In 1997-98, for the first time, an attempt was made on Ganda by Nilesh Kokam, one of the sharp shooters of the D-gang, and his aides. This attempt was made when

n order to keep anti-social elements at bay besides preventing accidents, the Western Railway launched an intense drive to curb trespassing at Andheri station on Wednesday. Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel were deployed at Andheri station at vulnerable spots prone to trespassing. During the drive, 155 people who were caught crossing tracks were apprehended under Section 147 (Punishment for trespass and refusal to desist from trespass) of the Railway Act. A total fine of Rs.1,35,000 was collected while 20 persons were sent to jail for 10 days. “The main aim of the drive is to prevent the loss of

human lives. These drives work as a deterrent against people’s tendencies of crossing the tracks and endangering their lives. The railway commuters are slightly casual when it comes to following the rules of using FOB’s ( Foot Over Bridge) and Subways instead of crossing tracks,” said Sharat Chandrayan, Chief Public Relation Officer, Western Railway. “The Western Railway also conducted this drive to deter anti-social elements and encroachers from trespassing on the railway’s properties,” added Chandrayan. Over a period of time, through several studies on behavioral science and the thinking pattern of people crossing the tracks, the Western Railway has found that

sary. As such, several campaigns are organized to strike an emotional chord with people. These include Nukkad Naataks (street plays) at stations, poster campaigns, radio spots, cinema slides, advertisements and announcements. At the same time several measures were taken at ground zero, such as painting the sleepers on railway tracks yellow at vulnerable spots so that person crossing tracks is able to judge the speed of an oncoming train. Intimidating posters are also put at such locations to dissuade people from trespassing. Infrastructural development is also being undertaken to accommodate the increasing crowd at stations, to prevent accidents. This month,

3,800 offenders booked

Apart from special drives, regular vigil at vulnerable spots is being kept by RPF personnel and people are being dissuaded from crossing tracks. This year from January to July, 3,800 people were booked under Section 147 of the Railway Act for crossing tracks and a fine of Rs.19.5 lakh was collected in totality while 40 people were sent to jail.

an escalator was started at Vile-Parle station for the convenience of commuters. More such escalators will be provided at Dadar, Andheri and Borivali stations by the end of this year. 25 escalators have been planned for the Western Railway’s suburban section.103 Foot Over Bridges have already been provided on the Churchgate-Virar section for easy dispersal and East-West connectivity, while

17 more are being provided. On June 15, the ADC had reported about the initiative by the Western Railway to curb accidents at unmanned level crossings, as nearly 40 per cent of railway accidents take place at such places. The Western Railway has started an awareness initiative, using non-conventional methods on the suburban section, mostly from Virar onwards up to Dahanu.

he APMC police on Tuesday arrested a father and son for allegedly pouring boiling tea and hot oil on a man in Sanpada. Ramkher Yadav (52) and his son Ajay Yadav (26), residents of Vashi, run a restaurant in Sanpada. On Tuesday Ramkher got into an argument with Sushil Sonkar (24), a resident of Nerul, and along with Ajay, poured hot oil and tea on him. Ullhas Kadam, API, APMC police station said, “Sonkar, works for a private bank and had come to the paan shop at 11.45 am. As he was on a call, Sonkar did not realise that he was standing in between Yadav’s restaurant and the paan shop. When Yadav asked Sonkar to move, he refused since he was on an important call. Enraged at his refusal, the duo started hitting Sonkar with wooden spoons and dragged him to the kitchen where they poured a vessel of boiling tea

and hot oil on him.” A witness informed the police immediately. “We reached the spot before the accused could flee and arrested them. Sonkar was taken to the NMMC hospital, and was later shifted to a private hospital by his family. He is out of danger now and should recover soon,” said officials.

“Yadav was arrested by APMC police earlier also. We have learnt from a tip-off that there was one more person who assaulted Sonkar. We are trying to find out who he is,” said an officer. The accused have been booked under Sections of 326, 324, 323, and 34 of the Indian Penal Code.

Shock for BEST consumers Continued from pg 1 « will be Rs.9.97 per unit, for 2014-15 will be Rs.10.93 per unit and for 2015-16 will be Rs.11.94 per unit. One of the main reasons for this power tariff hike being argued is the revenue losses incurred by BEST in its transport services in the city. Most of the power consumers and organisations in the island city have vociferously argued against the practice of allowing the BEST to offset its transport

wing losses by recovering the same from power consumers. Besides this, the MERC has allowed the BEST to recover Rs.1,190 crore transport deficit for the periods of 2004-05 and 2008-09 from the power consumers. The BEST was allowed to recover Rs.280 crore and Rs.265 crore for 2010-11 and 2011-12 as transport losses which, according to the MERC, was impacting the overall power tariff structure.

NIA files reply on discharge applications moved by Malegaon blast accused By Philip Varghese

T

he National Investigating Agency (NIA) on Thursday filed a reply on the discharge applications moved by eight Muslim accused in the designated Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) court, who were arrested in the 2006 Malegaon mosque blast, leaving it on the court to take a decision. The NIA, in its reply filed by Public Prosecutor Geeta Godambe, said, “We conducted thorough investigations in

Under Section 457(3) of the BPMC Act 1949, it is mandatory for the civic administration to draft its recruitment guidelines and seek a final approval from the state government authorities. Infamous for its high profile recruitment scams, out-ofturn illegal promotions and backdoor entries, the civic administration had been shying away from sending the proposal of Model Recruitment Rules from the past four years. However, officials claimed that the draft proposal has

been tabled in June this year before the state government authorities. With the judiciary intervening in the issue, the state government authorities will now have to take steps towards sanctioning the rules within six weeks of the receipt of the order (issued on August 21, 2013) and file a compliance report. It has been alleged that rules have been bent for unqualified officials who have been hurriedly awarded illegal promotions to top posts without the requisite permission from the concerned authorities.

‘Release them’ the case before arriving at the conclusion. In view of the submission made above, the honourable court may kindly pass appropriate order in the matter, eight out of nine Muslim accused in the 2006 Malegaon bomb blasts case had filed application seeking discharge from the case over contradiction in charge sheet filed by various probe agencies.” Accused Noorulhuda Samsodhoha, Shabbir Ahmed Masiullah, Raess Ahmed Rajjab Ali Mansuri, Mohammed Zahid Abdul Majid, Abrar Ahmed Gulam Ahmed, Mohamed Ali Shaikh and Asif Bashir Khan had moved an application last month. A series of blast on September 08, 2006 had taken place inside Hamidiya Masjid adjacent to qabristan. Another blast took place a little far away at Mushawerat Chowk,

The incidents occurred on the day of Shab-e-Barat, when hundreds of Muslims throng to the qabristan. About 34 people were killed and more than 300 were injured in the blasts. Police had blamed local Muslim youths for the blasts, and booked nine Muslim youths in the case. Later investigations by NIA carried out fresh arrests. The development in the case came after Maharashtra ATS, led by Hemant Karkare, who was killed in Mumbai terror attack, cracked the September 2008 blast in Malegaon and arrested Hindu terrorists including a sadhvi and a serving army officer. The matter will be taken up for hearing on September 7 during the regular hearing of Malegaon 2006 blast case. philip.varghese@afternoondc.in

Capture of Yasin Bhatkal: Big blow to IM W

here was Yasin Bhatkal before he stayed in a hide-out on the BiharNepal border? Bhatkal who was the founder of Indian Mujahideen had close links with Pakistani Lashkar-eToiba. Most probably he was getting paid by Pakistan’s intelligence agency. It is also possible he was working for the LeT. There was a bounty of Rs. 75 lakh on his head but somehow he managed to evade capture. The police are likely to get useful information from him with regard to the working of the IM cells in different parts of the country. The IM cells must have, on hearing about his capture, taken cover. The information which he is likely to give will help the police to bust the cells and apprehend the IM terrorists. The morale of the IM terrorists must be low and the capture of Bhatkal must have been a big blow to them. Bhatkal who has been responsible for carrying out bomb blasts in Pune, Hyderabad, Delhi and Bangalore must have been in touch both with the terrorists in Pakistan and also the terror network in India. He must have been in touch with the terrorists in India and planning attacks. With the arrest of Bhatkal and another terrorist Abdul Karim Tunda, the threat to India will be considerably reduced. It will also help our agencies to achieve success in the fight against terror.

T is interesting what some of the Indian media have to say about the latest Pakistani attack on Indian soldiers across the Line of Control in the Poonch area resulting in the killing of five of them. “Don’t Get Mired in Anti-Pak Jingoism” warned The Economic Times (August 9). “The Government” said the paper “should go ahead with the talks between Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his Pakistani counterpart, never mind the jingoistic rhetoric inside Parliament and on television.” Pakistan, according to the paper “has multiple power centres and India has to deal with all of them simultaneously at that level”. India’s aim, added the paper “should be to strengthen the elements within Pakistan which realise that terror now threatens to consume Pakistan itself and seek to try another track.” New Delhi, the paper further said “must not fall into the trap” built by terrorists of “weakening the civilian government” in Pakistan.

PM-Sharif talks The Asian Age (August 9) believed that “it is not the right time for P.M.-Sharif talks”, suggesting that “Dr. Singh needs to find a way to avoid the meeting and instead, find ways to engage at a lower level.” At the same time the paper said “it might be in the fitness of things if the government gave some sign of understanding the sense of injury among the people on the beheading of Indian soldiers in January and the killing of five jawans earlier this week.” The paper congratulated the Opposition for saying “the whole country stood with the government on the Pakistan question.” A columnist, Neena Gopal, writing in the paper also said India “must keep talking with Pakistan giving valid reasons for that advice. Dr. Singh, she said, “must de-link dialogue from conflict-resolution.” Hindustan Times (August 9) argued that India’s response to Pakistan’s “grave provocations” must be “tempered with pragmatism”. However much it may stick in our throat, there is no getting away from engaging Pakistan” said the paper, adding: “To be very realistic, India’s best bet is to talk to them and at least gauge what measures can be taken to avert such incidents in the future.” “No one” said the paper, “in their sane minds would want the region to be plunged into a war”, so it would be better “for our politicians not to echo the belligerence seen among the pub-

Understandably many columnists have expressed their views on this provoking subject, some of them strongly. Swapan Das Gupta, writing in The Times of India (August 11) pointed out that “just too long India has been clutching at straws, trying its best to strengthen the ‘good’ Pakistani vis-à-vis the ‘bad’ guys in the seminaries and cantonments.” He emphasised that Pakistan has detected ‘openings’ in “a weak and fractured government in Delhi” and added: “It is too late in the day to inject cement into the spine of the present Indian dispensation. The government seems a passing show… Is a united Pakistan any longer in India’s larger national interest? The answer will suggest long term strategies.” Dasgupta has not said it openly but

UPA’s Pakistan policy According to Gaur “the UPA’s Pakistan policy can best be viewed as a tragic waste where it has nothing to boast of any tangible gains achieved in return for its obsessive pursuance of its one-point agenda of ‘Peace With Pakistan At Any Cost”. The real problem is not the business, the real problem is I will be left alone with my wife. I can retire right now if you promise me one thing, that you will live with us.” I said, "This is strange. Are you retiring or am I retiring?" He said, "That is the condition. Do you think I am interested in all these troubles? It is just to escape from my wife." The wife was a great social worker. She used to run an orphanage, a house for widows, and a hospital particularly for people who are beggars and cannot pay for their treatment. WHATEVER said and done, Indian economy suffered a huge loss as the rupee touched a new low against the dollar. By seeing the position the foreign investors are not going to come in. If people have expectations that the rupee is going to slide still further, they will hold back investments. We have seen the crash of Indian rupee value in the last two months as Indian Rupee was overvalued at that time. The position appears to be bleak unless and until the flow starts coming in and the rupee goes up again. To what level remains to be seen. Though the global economy is on the downward trend, the present position of the Indian economy is our own making. We were running a sizable CAD for the couple of years but Indian Rupee was completely stable due to free flow of foreign funds. The extended period for which we run Indian economy without catching up with the world market gave a big leeway and the free fall of Indian Rupee began. Now everything has gone out of hand and it is time to recover, otherwise, the rupee will cross 70 per dollar and more. It is time to resurrect and not to brush aside the present position by saying not to despair as our FM is trying hard to save his head.

Otherwise, there is no prima facie reason in presence of the ‘economist’ Prime Minister and the finance minister. former Prime Ministers late Lal Bahadur Shastri and late Morarji Desai and implement their economic strategies to stop the tumbling of our Rupee as well as to control the daily spiralling food inflation on a war footing. Otherwise the Rupee will come down to the level of Rs. 100/- per US dollar within next few days.

— Hansraj Bhat, Borivali

RUPEE plummets to 66.24 against dollar on fears that Food Security Bill widens the fiscal deficit further and created panic in market and the sensex crashes to 590 points by the way. Now, after all, the blame game started once Rupee slided to a new low. The coffin of Indian economy is carried by P. Chidambaram and Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and followed by Congress president Sonia Gandhi and President Pranab Mukherjee (as the predecessor of Chidambaram) at the back. Since the full blame is on the present FM, he is trying to pass on the buck to his predecessor. Now Chidambaram opined that there are domestic factors that led to the fall of rupee against dollar. One of them is that we allowed fiscal deficit to be breached and current account deficit to swell because of certain decision that Congress-led FM did between the year 2009 and 2011-that is by the present President. It brought growth and stability but it cost us in terms of fiscal and current account deficit. It was indeed a veiled criticism of his predecessor Pranab Mukherjee. Now it is very clear that how Pranab Mukherjee was pushed to the post of President to save face of the UPA Government. — C.K. Ramanathan, Ghaziabad

THE ‘only downward’ roller coaster ride of the ‘ru-pee’ has got me thinking. The second syllable of the currency is indeed relevant – because very soon the only places that will accept it are public toilets. Maybe we should also now call it the Rue-pee. In just 66 balls (years) the rupee has scored a century against the British Pound and a double century

In all we fear the aftermath saying that Mumbai’s spirit is back of these kind of incidents and the and we ask ourselves: Why should position of the victim as she goes we fear? The question can be an- out again for work. People think of her past and she is separated from the society for no fault of hers. This causes anxiety and tension to the victim. And what has the much tom-tommed crown prince to say about all that is going on now? Surely he will not have the guts to be PM in 2014. And has someone done all this just to ensure that this does not happen – because only he can do what is necessary as he did in 1991? But he will wait

Even more expensive foreign currencies like Kuwait dinar at Rs. 240, Bahraini Rs. 180, Omani rial Rs. 175 and Latvia Rs. 130 which proves that the Indian government have failed totally to control the slide of the Indian rupees which has become cause for concern. ports have become costly, affecting consumer durables. So, its indeed a mixed bag for Indian economy-which is more bad than good. Rupee’s fall will also have a direct impact on foreign investors pulling of Indian equity markets and the students studying abroad, as they will have to cough up more in rupee terms. THE rupee’s fall has been overdone and the rupee trading at 68 to a dollar is too fast too soon and should retrace in the short run though the rupee looks weak in the long run. Here are some urgent steps need to be taken to help rupee save some ground. 1. People should use home made products which saves foreign currency and at the same time encourage Indian economy and growth. We consume barrels of coke daily and skipping that would mean saving huge foreign currency. 2. India is a great tourist attraction with rich historic heritage. Develop it professionally so that we earn foreign exchange revenue when loads of tourists visit our country for leisure and pleasure. 3. The brightest brains are found in India and we must make our educational institutions world class so that India becomes a world education hub and attracts a lot of foreign students. — S.N. Kabra, Goregaon

THE value of Indian rupee is falling at an alarming rate with Indian economy heading for disaster situation hitting the common people very hard. The record fall against US dollar continues to hog the limelight and it has also lost ground and breached key level against a host of other currencies including British pound, euro and Swiss franc. Adding to rupee’s woes against US currently stand at nearly Rs. 70 the British pound crossed Rs. 106 level, euro Rs. 92, Swiss franc Rs. 75, Canadian dollar Rs.65, Australian Rs. 60, while fected persons had the confidence and came forward and reported the matter to the police. In the past, the matter was hushed up at the house level and the culprits got the courage to repeat such acts. It is time for parents to keep their girls and boys within the limit and not go beyond and expose their love life outside the four walls and then fall prey to such bad elements. Prevention is better than cure and it is wise not to go to isolated places at odd hours and invite trouble. — C.K. Subramaniam, Sanpada

AS the exchange rate of rupee plummets against the dollar, pulls even sensex below 18,000, it shows that there is no control from RBI or the Finance Minister at the Centre to have check of falling rupee in the last eight months. The Indian exporters are now making more profit and families of those working overseas are getting more rupees for every dollar remitted by such persons to India. But foreign tourists coming to India will pay less dollars for their vacation in India. Also, imcollected at the crime site like the earth comparison, DNA, clothing and other elements to nail the five condemned scoundrels now in the city police’s custody as otherwise the excellent effort by OF Mumbai Police who had LETTER THE DAY managed to nab all these demons , would be a waste. In fact, it is a second national heinous crime post the December 16 last year’s ‘Nirbhaya’ case. Once the forensic lab’s inferences are drawn, these demons should be brought to justice by a fast track court at the earliest in such a manner that any one who wants to commit such an inhuman act in future, will think twice before he does so. Our gutless youngsters I WAS shocked while reading the news recently about the gutless Oshiwara crowd when an actor and her friend were fighting with bag snatchers. Our ‘young’ public, is ‘brave’ in shouting slogans against anti-women crimes only when they are in a big crowd. At the most they can join the candle march or they can hold placards. Unfortunately, I was not present there at that time. Otherwise I would have certainly helped these two to fight against the bag snatchers and hand them over to the police, though my age is 66, and also I have a spinal problem. I would have not preferred to be a coward, mute spectator at all. — Hansraj Bhat, Borivali

When it comes to formal wear, a perfectly fitting shirt is a musthave in every man’s wardrobe. However, you’d think that as far custom-made shirts go, all you’ll get is a shirt sewn for your size. Wrong! From the kind of fabric and the cuts to the detailing and monogramming, there’s a lot you can do with shirts to make them truly personalised. One such service is offered by Louis Philippe. It uses the existing fits which you can personalise by choosing the collar, cuff, placket and pocket options. You can also get your initials monogrammed. The price ranges from `4,000 to `15,000. If you’d like more options, check out SS Homme. The whole process is akin to designing a shirt from scratch. It starts off with a stylist taking you through a variety of fabric options. Once you choose the fabric, you will get to tell the stylist your construction and design preferences based on which they will design your shirt. What’s more is that you can add a number of funky buttons and cuffs that will add more to the personalised experience. The cost depends on the fabric you choose and will be upwards of `3,500. contact louis philippe: 67033649; ss homme: 9820811263

Another upcoming but promising DJ visits India. We get him talking...

There’s double the fun at Prithvi this weekend with two plays that are entertaining as well as informing, says Rhea Dhanbhoora >> The play A Peasant of El Salvador will be performed tomorrow at Prithvi Theatre

t the age of just 25, Ben Gold is one of the multi-talented names in the electronic dance music scene and will be performing at blueFROG tonight. Ben, who has been brought here by music events and artist management company Power Struggle, combines a highly acclaimed career as a leading studio engineer with that of one of the brightest young stars in the trance soundscape, playing at some of the world’s leading clubs alongside world class DJs. Not only has he been a regular feature on Armin’s ASOT Trance 500, his new track, Mesocyclone, has already gained support from EDM giants such as Armin van Buuren, Markus Schulz, Gareth Emery, Jochen Miller, Tritonal, Judge Jules, Sean Tyas and Ummet Ozcan. Below are excerpts from his interview: Are you excited about your debut tour to India? What have you been hearing from your fellow DJs about their experience here? India has been one of the places I have always wanted to perform at. I always hear great feedback from fellow DJs about their shows and the people. I’m glad I am finally coming to India! Being a DJ today seems to be all about glamour and attention. Give us an insight into your life. It’s certainly not all glamour, but I’m extremely lucky to be able to do this job. f you want to spend your weekend soaking up some culture with great plays, QTP has a treat in store for you at Prithvi theatre. The two cautionary tales that will be performed include one futuristic dystopia as well as a retelling of history and both serve as warnings for the irresponsible development and unchecked apathy that can devastate a country. Director Quasar Thakore Padamsee says, “These plays are a double bill of sorts. I found one, while researching for the other. What struck me about both stories is how little the ‘little people’ matter. In our calculations of

economic development, we are blinded by the statistical success of initiatives but miss out on the actual human cost. Both these stories deal with very severe issues, but with humour and grace. And I hope these only remain stories on a stage and we never actually get there.” Project S.T.R.I.P, written by Ram Ganesh Kamatham, is a satire about corporate politics and while researching for the project, director Quasar discovered Peter Gould and Stephen Stearn’s A Peasant of El Salvador. The play is about a farmer and his family and is set against the backdrop of the 1970s civil unrest.

Have you ever thought about the dangers of mixing business and passion? With a superb ensemble cast and an intense courtroom drama, A Balancing Act Production’s The Verdict sees the audience play jury and decide the verdict. It centres around the trial of a selfish and power hungry Riya Sharma, accused of murdering her boss and lover, Karan Singh. Director Divya Palat tells us, “Sharma was Singh's confidante and secretary whom he jilted to marry Natasha Rao, the daughter of one of the city’s richest and most respected citizens. The play focuses on the struggle between the two women in Karan’s life — his mistress and his wife. Our two debuting leading ladies — Madhoo and Tanishaa — received thunderous applause and Vivan Bhathena was the surprise package of the evening with the audience clapping after almost every line at our premiere. « STORE REVIEWS: WATCHES & MORE AND THE ELEPHANT PARADE

Shopatainment Madhurjya Saikia | HRM

With a large screen TV, the occasional gig and a refreshment counter, Watches & More focuses on much more than just watches, says Dev Goswami

W

hen I heard that Watches & More were re-launching in a new avatar, all I expected was a different design and a new colour scheme. However, they have drastically changed from being just a retail store to a place where you can be entertained while you shop — something that they call ‘shopatainment.’ The store follows an open-door policy which makes it very inviting. As far as the layout is concerned, apart from a small seating area in the centre, it is quite barren. The watch displays are lined up along the wall and the centre is left empty, allowing you to browse around while enjoying the loud music or watching the videos on their plasma TV — all a part of their ‘shopatainment’ concept. With vintage watch advertisements and a bohemian wall that aims to showcase the transition of time (it includes items such as the typewriter, the Kolkata hand rickshaw and a manual taxi meter), the décor is impressive. And if that wasn’t enough, they also have a small refreshment counter which serves sodas and juices, as well as a shop & win scheme where you get the chance to win a prize if your name is selected in a lucky draw (right now, the prize is a mountain bike). They also plan to have gigs at the store to increase the entertainment factor. You must think that all this made us forget about the watches. However, the actual merchandise is not unusual. They have a range of brands from Fossil and Espirit to Antonio Bernini and Pierre Cardin. They are also the only chain in India with Madison Newyork and Westar. When you visit, don’t forget to check out the special discounts display. They plan to have discounts all year round and you can get as much as 50% off on selected timepieces.

DESI ELEPHANT GOES ABROAD Jewellery designer Mira Gulati participated in The Elephant Parade in the US. We get you details on the parade

W

ith there being a threat to the habitats of the largest land animal in the world, father and son duo, Marc and Mike Spits, initiated the first open air art exhibition called the Elephant Parade in 2007 at Rotterdam. With a strong motive to conserve and encourage the welfare of the lives of the Asian elephants, the parade includes creative, life-sized models of elephants from various parts of the globe. These models are created by fashion designers from across the world. Since the first elephant parade, the event has been taking place in a number of countries and this year, along with the UK National Tour, the Elephant Parade visited the US (from August 23-25 at Dana Point in California) for the first time. This specific parade was on our radar for a long time as jewellery designer and owner of luxury jewellery brand Mirari, Mira Gulati was also participating with her elephant design. Talking about her participation in the parade, Mira says, “The elephant parade is a brand in itself and over the years, it has shown immense growth and helped in best possible way to conserve the welfare of elephants. Elephants are an essential part of Indian wildlife and saving their endangered lives is a must. The elephant designed by us will show off the rich culture of India and our love for it.” The figurine that she created for the event is that of a seated elephant with several beautiful Indian motifs. The elephants displayed at the parade are auctioned towards the end of the event and the proceeds are donated towards the Asian Elephant Foundation.

you down to the basement which also serves as part of the café! We’ve seen a number of wall installations in many city restaurants lately (Jam Jar Diner, The Pantry) and there was one here as well in the form of recycled crates with small items perched on them. Frankly, it’s the duplex seating arrangement that we like most. After settling in, we first ordered for a Iced Green Tea with lemongrass, mint and ginger (`200) and a Berry Mango Iced Tea (`200); both of them were refreshing, but the latter was too sweet. In the next round, we asked for a Lobster Salad with green beans, apple, avocado and truffle oil (`490), and were told that lobster was not available but they could replace it with smoked salmon. The salad was delicious — yummy dressing that didn’t drench the vegetables, crunchy, fresh lettuce and generous chunks of salmon — but wasn’t filling and demands the price of a main course dish, which we thought was unfair. Next up was a Grilled Jalapeno Popper & Cheese Sandwich (`370) served with potato wedges and a basic salad on the side. With the first few bites, the sandwich seems like the ultimate cheese delight, but eventually you get tired of the excess cheese. Our pizza feast comprised of Roasted Garlic Spinach & Tomato Pizza (`450) and Spicy Sausage & Gorgonzola Pizza (`550). The pizzas were served on wafer thin crust — light but filling — and the sausage and gorgonzola combination got the most votes by the pizza lovers at our table. The BBQ Chicken Burger (`420), that had a generously thick and delectable patty sandwiched between brown bread sesame buns also fared well with our picky palettes. We ended our meal with Blue Velvet Cheesecake (`240), Three Layer Chocolate Cake (`240) and Super Chocolate Brownie (`240). The cheesecake looked too pretty to dig into and was equally delicious. While the cake seemed a little dry, the brownie made impressive amends for it. Overall, our eating experience here was better than average. But, what will make us visit this café and not the many others in the vicinity? Eat hasn’t nailed that yet.

K

erala food is usually a hit with me, so when I heard Keys Hotel was holding a Kerala food festival, I had to rush over, just to see what was in store. The menu for the day included soup, salads, starters, main course, desserts and a special roast of the day. My eyes goggled at the site of Crab Rassam, so I had to try that! I have no problem with pepper, but the dish should come with a warning because the heady concoction can leave unsuspecting customers spluttering. I’m favourable to meat in most of my meals, but here, the vegetarian starters also shone! I’ve never savoured the humble (and usually very oily) tendlis (ivy gourd) as much as the Kovakka Kondatum and even the cauliflower in the

The bottle gourd Churakaparippu Koottu was a yummy curry and the appam was the lightest, softest, most melt-inyour-mouth one I’d ever had. The sweet dishes on offer at the buffet were well-made but not spectacular. The menu needed to be translated for me, because while identifying dishes was easy, remembering the names was harder than I had anticipated — but it made the evening that much more interesting. The food gets thumbs up from me. The festival ended last month, but head down for a taste of their food and ask their chef to whip up some of these dishes; you won’t leave disappointed.

A WALK ON THE OTHER SIDE…

The Maldives isn’t just about swaying palm trees, soft-sand beaches and decadent private island resorts as Raul Dias finds out on his half day tryst with its capital — the diminutive island city of Male that is as quaint and cultured as it is beautiful

FACT FILE Getting there There are a number of daily direct flights from Mumbai to Male. There are also a number of daily flights from Mumbai to Male via Bangalore, Thiruvanatapuram and Colombo. When to visit Although the Maldives is a great destination to travel to all year round, the months from November to April are the most pleasant. Accommodation There is a very limited choice of hotels on the main island of Male, as the Maldives is more geared towards expensive private island resort type of accommodation. However, the following are some of the best Male has to offer: l Mookai Hotel (www.kaimoo.com) l Hotel Octave (www.hotel-octavemaldives.com) l Baani Hotel (www.baanihotels.com)

usually enjoy making small talk with airport immigration officers, who are often my first point of contact with the country that I am about to step into. Their questions are always centered (rather gleefully!) around the numerous visas and entry stamps adorning my weatherbeaten passport. But, that day, the officer I was standing in front of was far from amused. “You’re not going directly to your resort?” he asked for the second time, as I patiently repeated my plans for the next six hours. Shaking his head with disbelief, he bestowed on my passport the all important entry stamp and with an exasperated thud, I was waived through. But, it really wasn’t his fault, you see. I was an oddity for him, doing one of the most bizarre things a traveller to the Maldives does. Before ensconcing myself in the creature comforts of the ultra-hip private island resort that I was booked into, I had chosen to spend half a day traipsing through the wonders of the capital island of Male (pronounced maa-lay) on the Kaafu Atoll to soak in the local culture and pulse of the country one normally eschews in favour of the ubiquitous resorts — places that are far removed both in distance and ethos of the capital. As an archipelago of 1,200 islands, with only 200 inhabited, the Maldives is a cluster of emeralds in the Indian Ocean, with Male as its unpolished, undiscovered diamond. At just under six square kilometers in size, the entire city can be covered on foot in less than a day. Stepping off the water taxi, I knew I’d have to let my keen sense of discovery take me wherever it fancied with no set agenda. But, side-stepping my sense of discovery, I paid heed to my sense of smell as I navigated my way though the bustling fish market. Fishmongers garrulously shouted out in Dhivehi, the local Maldivian language, bargain-hungry housewives in long gowns with colourful headscarves jostled for space with chefs from resorts coveting the catch of the day — the market was a hive of frenzy and bonhomie, doubling up as the perfect orientation to my Male sojourn. Continuing along that same vein, the fruit and vegetable market housed alongside its ‘fishy’ counterpart was another great introduction to local daily life. With stalls selling exotic fruit such as the hairy rambutan, snake fruit and the stinky durian, this market is

also the unofficial town meeting place with unique rope hammockchairs where locals converge for daily tea drinking sessions over plates of desserts such as the cylindrical huni folhi made from a mixture of Patna rice flour, grated coconut and coconut palm syrup. Picking up a few pieces to take back home, I also indulged the tourist within by buying a few curios made from shell and coconut husk from a shop a few minutes away on Male’s northern end of Chandhanee Magu. I made all my purchases using US dollars, the de facto tourist currency in the Maldives. Though they do have the Maldivian Rufiyaa, they prefer to use the dollar for commerce with tourists both at resorts and in Male, while locals use the rufiyaa. As it was a Friday, I followed a group of men wearing skull caps as they made their way to offer prayers at the beautiful Hukuru Miskiy also called the Friday Mosque. Just outside the mosque, I wandered towards the modest, security-free President’s house called the Muliaage. The house is painted in white, with turquoise highlights on the windows and doors along with a bright coralcoloured roof. The grounds of the house are also the resting place of Moroccan scholar Abul Barakat Yousef Al-Berberi, who is believed to have introduced Islam to the Maldives in 1153. A passerby was kind enough to let me know that very often their beloved President, Mohammed Waheed Hassan Manik, comes up to the gates and personally greets travellers and is known on occasion to even invite them in for tea. I, sadly, wasn’t fortunate enough, as the President was on a state visit. I did get lucky as far as a superb lunch was concerned as I dined at a small, local restaurant called Haruge Café along Male’s main street of Boduthakurufaanu Magu. They served me tuna curry called Maas Huni, Kukulhu Riha a chicken dish with brown rice and Maas Roshi, tiny disks of bread stuffed with fish. Though not reasonable at USD 20 (`1,354) , the meal was a great way to get into the groove of the city as I got a chance to dine and swap tales with locals. But, like all good things, this tryst had to come to an end. And, as the afternoon sun reached its prime, it was time for me to board my sea plane to yet another sanitised, cookie cutter resort and leave behind an island city full of soul and character. A place that epitomises the cliché ‘off the beaten track’ with all its might!

>> The Maldives is a great place to relax, unwind and soak up some culture, especially if you visit the smaller island cities

But given the macroeconomic situation just now, whether we can afford it (food security plan) right now? Timing is not right, timing is an issue. We should not do this because of electoral considerations. We should do it because it can be done, it needs to be done. And this is a desirable thing to happen.

NSE India: CNX Nifty — Daily Market Report for: Friday (August 30, 2013) (Based on the activity of the previous trading day) by Dominic Rebello

REVIEW OF THE PREVIOUS DAY: The Nifty rose substantially on Thursday (August 29, 2013) a net 124.05 points (2.35%) and closed at the 5409 point level. The market opened up with a gap at the 5316 points level. It then declined by a few points and registered the day’s low at the 5303 points level at 10.14 a.m. The index then rose and turned into a range bound movement until 2.40 p.m. It then rose sharply and registered the day’s high at the 5428 points level at 3.13 p.m. The index then declined and turned into a range bound movement until closing at the day. The Nifty remained above its previous close throughout the session, moved in a range of 126 points and closed above the psychologically important 5400 points level. Sentiment was bullish and amongst the 50 Nifty stocks 38 were gainers, while 12 stocks closed in the red. All the sectoral indices closed in the green. Substantial buying was seen realty, oil & gas and metal stocks. TECHNICAL ANALYSIS: Volume: Volume (Qty shares) increased 11.97%. This change is moderate but indicates a wide participation by investors.

Market Breadth: Overall Market Breadth on the NSE was positive. Amongst all the traded stocks, 794 were gainers, 511 were losers and 76 remained unchanged. Slow Stochastic Indicator: The Slow Stochastic Oscillator has risen in the neutral zone. The Slow K line in the Stochastic Oscillator is below the slow D line (negative if it continues).

RSI Indicator: The RSI rose and crossed above the 40 level and is now rising (positive if it continues).

MACD Indicator: The MACD is below zero but is rising (positive if it continues). It is below its 9-day Average (negative). ADX Indicator & DI Lines: The +DI line is below the –DI line but both lines are converging (positive if it continues). The ADX is flat while the Market Index is rising. No signal here.

support is at the 5240 points level. The next support is at the 5191 points level.

Resistance Levels: The immediate main resistance is at the 5604 points level. The next resistance is at the 5695 points level. Pivot Point Analysis: For intra-day traders the support and resistance levels are calculated according to the pivot point theory and are: Pivot point = 5380 (This is the level where the trend is likely to change during intra-day). Support (1) = 5332. Support (2) = 5254. Resistance (1) = 5458. Resistance (2) = 5506.

OUTLOOK FOR TODAY: On Japanese candlestick patterns the index af ter having formed a small white body candle with a long lower tail ( indic ating indecisiveness amongst investors) has formed a long white body candle on higher volumes. This i s positive and indicates that the bias has shifted towards the buy side of the market. Further, the index has crossed above the 5 days moving average. All these indicate a positive bias. However, the index is still below its 15, 25 and 200 days moving averages and all the three averages are declining and also negatively trended. Further, despite yesterday’s substantial rise, the velocity parameters continue to remain negatively trended. Both these indicate a negative bias. As such these are mixed signals. Investors are advised to adopt a wait and watch policy, until a clear reversal signal is visible.

Work with strict stop losses on all positions

Moving Averages (Trend Indicators) The index: Has crossed above its 5-day average (at 5385) Positive. Is below its 15-day average (at 5473) Negative. Is below its 25-day average (at 5594) Negative. TTK Prestige’s sales growth in Tamil Nadu, according to our recent channel checks, revived to 15-20% YoY due to a strong and early monsoon and reduction in power cuts during July-August. Non-south sales growth momentum remains strong at 35-40% YoY along with a substantial reduction in credit outstanding with dealers to ~20-25 days from ~40 days a year ago. With the long-term value drivers intact, we expect revenue growth of 21% YoY in FY14 and 23% revenue CAGR in FY13-18. Hawkins’ recent update in the AGM around the new intended product launches is a risk worth watching out for in 2HFY14. We reiterate our BUY stance with a target price of Rs 4,067. Sales growth of 15-20% YoY in Tamil Nadu during Jul-Aug: Our channel checks in Tamil Nadu suggest that retail footfalls and demand have substantially improved in Jul-Aug, due to: (a) a strong and early monsoon; (b) reduction in daily power cuts to less than 2 hours in Chennai (from 4-5 hours previously) and to 5-6 hours outside Chennai (from 14-15 hours previously); and (c) a weak base effect from 2QFY13. We expect revenue growth from south India (57-58% of TTK’s overall revenues) to increase to at least 10% YoY in 2QFY14 from a decline of 13% YoY in 1QFY14. Non-south sales momentum remains strong at 35-40% YoY: Despite the high base of FY13, non-south sales growth has remained strong thanks to: (a) lack of any new product launches by Hawkins so far; and (b) addition of distributors and strengthening of the ground-level sales team across states such as Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Punjab. The average number of days of credit outstanding with dealers in north India has also reduced substantially to 20-25 days currently from 38-40 days a year ago. Valuation: TTK Prestige’s long-term value drivers remain intact. This includes expansion across products, geographies and distribution channels amidst a well-thought strategy for capital allocation, promoter’s succession planning and strengthening of the middle management team to cater to the scalability of the business model. We expect revenue CAGR of 23% and PAT CAGR of 24% in FY13-18. Our DCF model generates a valuation of Rs 4,067/share, 24% upside. We reiterate our BUY stance.

Kotak Securities calls a ‘Buy’ on NTPC CMP: Rs. 130

Target Rs. 160

Ahead of peers. We upgrade NTPC to BUY (from ADD previously) with a target price of Rs 160 as the CMP ignores the inherent strengths of the company relative to peers—(1) disproportionate allocation of coal due to proximity to coal mines, (2) higher off-take due to low-cost take or pay arrangements, and (3) consistent earnings growth with continued investment in new projects. At 1.1X P/B, NTPC trades at a 45% discount to historical trading multiples, ignoring the inherent strengths of the company. Proximity to coal mines will ensure higher coal allocation compared to peers: Proximity to coal mines, dedicated evacuation infrastructure and supplement through captive coal blocks will likely allow NTPC to continue to enjoy a disproportionate allocation of domestic coal supplies. A bulk of NTPC’s extant power plants receives coal supplies through dedicated MGR facilities, with 75% of coal supplies from pit-head locations. Only two coal sources (MCL-Talcher and SECL-Korba) are not fully meeting coal supply commitments currently. Proximity to coal sources will continue to enable NTPC to enjoy a disproportionate allocation of coal for both extant as well as new plant capacities. Even for incremental capacities, nearly 30% are dependent on captive coal. Dependence on MCL/SECL, which have a larger supply deficit, is restricted to ~35 mtpa (30% of coal requirements). Low cost of generation will keep it ahead of peers on cost curve: With lowcost domestic coal continuing to dominate fuel sourcing and a relatively ageing fleet (with a mix of new and old plants), average cost of generation for NTPC will continue to be superior to that of IPPs—NTPC had an average fuel cost of Rs 1.7/kwh in FY2013 compared to >Rs 2.5/kwh for private sector players. While cost of generation is less ominous for NTPC (under cost-plus regime), efficient players such as NTPC will continue to enjoy a higher offtake as state distribution utilities become more cost conscious. At 1.1X P/B, NTPC trades at deep discount to historical multiples, ignores earnings resilience: At 1.1 P/B and 9X P/E, NTPC is trading at historical lows, while ignoring the inherent strength of the cost-plus business model as well as the 9% CAGR in earnings factored by us (over FY2011-16E). We upgrade NTPC to BUY (from ADD previously) with a revised target price of Rs 160 (Rs 165 previously). While fuel security remains an area of concern, cost plus sale arrangement makes NTPC relatively better-positioned in comparison to IPPs with lower fuel and off-take risk even as availability-based incentive ensures resilience of earnings. In our view, improved visibility on the capacity addition program beyond the immediate 14 GW targets as well as clarity on sustenance of returns despite coal availability issues with a pending regulatory review will provide long-term earnings visibility, which is critical for stock performance.

Zyfin projects Q1 FY’14 GDP growth at 4.3%, well below consensus estimates of 5% signalling that the Indian economy is in deep crisis By A Business Reporter

Y

oY growth in the first two quarters of this calendar year would be the seventh worst on record since the introduction of GDP quarterly data in 1996 and the lowest since 2002, estimates ZyFin, formerly BluFin, which has introduced a monthly macroeconomic lead indicators that tracks consumer outlook and the business cycle in India. It projects Q1 FY’14 (or Q2CY’14) GDP growth at 4.3%, well below consensus estimates of 5% signalling that the Indian economy is in deep crisis The silver lining however is on the inflation front. ZyFin’s Monthly GDP Growth Indicator (MGGI), which tracks inflation on the basis of the GDP deflator, has witnessed a collapse in the sequential GDP deflator inflation from 6.7% in Q4 FY’13 (or Q1 CY’13) to a Seasonally Adjusted

BUSINESS

o you really know what your capital is costing you? Is it possible to sell your products below cost and still make a profit? Can you increase your profits without increasing your investment in working capital? How do you manage finance effectively in recessionary times? Are you aware of the tools and techniques of managing business finance? To answer these Dr Anil Lamba, author of the bestselling book, Romancing The Balance Sheet, will conduct ‘Understanding Numbers’, a two day training programme on Finance for Non-Finance Persons on September 13 & 14, 2013 at MCA Club, BKC. The programme is designed for small-scale industrialists, businessmen, women entrepreneurs, non-finance executives and self employed professionals and is practice oriented comprising of lectures, workshops, case studies, and group discussions. Topics to be covered include: Balance Sheet - Preparation and Analysis, Concept of Profit, Profitability Management, Cash Flow Management, Marginal Costing & Break Even Analysis, Leverage & Ratio Analysis, and Funds Flow Statements. Says Dr. Lamba , “The idea is to remove the fear of numbers. At the end of the programme participants will not only be able to read balance sheets but also be able to make sense of any financial statement and assess the financial health of a company. The program has been modelled keeping in mind non-finance persons using jargon-free, user friendly language”.

Annual Rate (SAAR) of 1.7% in Q1 FY’14 (or Q2 CY’13) with the monthly estimate for June at 0%. ZyFin estimates that inflation for the year would fall below 6% for the first time since the year 2007, excluding the crisis quarters of 2009. There are four components of Zyfin’s GDP growth estimate. They are (with approximate weights in parentheses): Agriculture (19 %), Manufacturing (15 %), Construction (7 %) and Services (59 %). All sectors have contributed to this sequential low growth of 4.2 % , with manufacturing being the biggest culprit. This sector registered negative growth of 0.6% SAAR in the second quarter. Construction was also a drag on growth, registering a SAAR of around 2.6 percent, less than half its long run average of 7 %. Service sector growth slowed down as well to 6.3% SAAR, well below its long run and expected average of 9% SAAR.

Speaking on the Q1 estimates, Debopam Chaudhuri, VP Research, ZyFin said, “The decline in manufacturing sector in June quarter was expected given the slowdown in intermediate sector observed since April 2013, with production of raw metals like copper, aluminium and pig iron shrinking, compared to the previous year.” Highlighting the negative trend, he went on to add “If one were to take the IIP data and the conventional annual year-on-year growth, one obtains a negative growth rate of -1.5 % SAAR for Q1 FY’ 14 (or Q2 CY’13); the third most negative on record for the manufacturing sector. The latest numbers of ZyFin’s Business Cycle Indicator (BCI) have signalled caution, and the sequential GDP estimate for Q1 FY14 confirms the occurrence of a sharp deceleration from the near 8 % level witnessed in Q4 FY13.”

Ajay plays Manav in Satyagraha!

MUMBAI | FRIDAY, AUGUST 30, 2013

Ajay Devgn is very excited about his role of Manav in Prakash Jha’s forthcoming film Sayagraha considering his long, fruitful association with producer director Prakash Jha. ADC’s Sandeep Hattangadi caught up with the reclusive star for an impropmptu interview. Some excerpts.

You talk about greed. What is your greed? Greed can be of many types. To achieve more can be greed or to sustain what one has can be greed. Even if a person wants to work at eighty it can be considered as a positive greed. To do good work can also be considered as a greed because it is good for the person and everyone especially in today’s circumstances where the rich and the poor alike are unhappy and our film speaks about this subject.

Why do protests generally go wrong? Because that’s what our film is saying, that a revolution can only happen if the youth of the country

come together for a cause and take to the streets. Do you feel non-violent protests can be taken up by youth? Our film denotes only non-violent protests. I feel even the greatest icon of peace and non-violence Mahatma Gandhi was a very angry man because without anger you cannot fight for your ideals and frustrated anger in a person can lead him to fight for his cause and lead him to victory. Gandhiji used his anger in a good manner and for a good cause.

What exactly is the theme of Satyagraha? It’s the story of a young man who has lost his father and a father who has lost his young son and how they come together and think together and fight for the same cause. So it is actually a father-son story.

Describe the character you portray. Manav is a modern guy, a big businessman, a financial genius who wants to achieve more and more profits in any way possible and believes in greed because it makes you work hard to progress in a positive

manner and we are not sending a message to the youth that they should protest in any manner but that they should realise the youth power and how the youth can lead the country to a great future.

Do you feel the message given in the film will be accepted by the audiences? Yes. I feel so because it is a simple message and the way it passed on to the youth will be accepted by society and the whole country in general.

Do you do films for Prakash Jha? I do films only if it has any entertainment value. In fact, when Arakshan was offered to me I told Jha that the subject doesn’t have any potential and I refused the offer and my prediction came true because most of the audiences didn’t understand the film and it didn’t do well. But I realised the potential in Satyagraha and immediately said yes to the film.

Courtesy: Jitu Savlani

Your character of Manav speaks about social change for good and yet urges the youth to achieve success any which way. Why this dichotomy? Yes. Manav believes that greed is good and greed in a person helps him to progress and have a good life and this progress leads to his betterment and thus leads to the betterment of the country and society in general.

How has your experience been working with Bachchan saab? I have done many films with him before too and have learnt a great deal from him.

I’ve been very fortunate: Govinda I’d love to act in a movie of the 50’s genre: Amrita Rao Many young viewers might not think much of Govinda but sample a little bit of Raja Babu, Sajan Chale Sasural or Coolie No 1 and witness the brilliance of an actor who could not only make the ridiculous enjoyable but also acceptable. Suneel V. Gaur and Rajesh V. Gaur met the ever optimistic Govinda for an interview. Having known us for a long time, he laughed and greeted with his usual phrase for us: “Jahan na pahuncha Ravi (sun), wahan pahuncha kavi (poet).” Excerpts: You have lost weight and are looking super fit. What brought about this transformation? I have never looked better [smiles]. I follow a disciplined lifestyle, eat once a day and do yoga. That’s about it. I have learnt to live in the moment and love it. I feel so light-headed and free! I only want to do good work and more good work.

Why is there no end to the period of struggle for you? The struggle just doesn’t seem to end! Nothing can keep you down except yourself. If you give up, it’s the end of you. You can’t give up if one film is not a hit. As I said, whatever I’ve been offered, I’ll perform to the best of my abilities. The rest is destiny. There’s no time to think now.

You have been given opportunities time and again by the industry. I’ve been very fortunate, despite my films that didn’t do well in the past. Yes, it does affect the economics of the film. But all the filmmakers I have worked with have wanted to work with me again. An actor should always have the attitude of a newcomer.

Your forthcoming films? I make a guest appearance in Akshay Kumar’s film. The reason I did his film is because it is a big banner. As for Aditya Chopra’s film directed by Shaad Ali, I fell in love with the subject and am looking forward to start shooting for it in September. Things are looking up for me (smiles).

on’t underestimate the power of a common man ’, is what Shah Rukh Khan’s character reiterates in the recent blockbuster hit Chennai Express. Yet again, the megamight of the ‘aam aadmi’ as a collective rebellious force against corruption, happens to be a part of Prakash Jha’s Satyagraha. Winsome actress Amrita Rao who is part of the Satyagraha ensemble formidable cast which has Amitabh Bachchan, Ajay Devgn, Kareena Kapoor and Manoj Bajpai in stellar lead roles, appeared ecstatic. Wasn’t the petite Amrita feeling ‘overshadowed’ amidst such a galaxy of mega-stars . Counters the exuberant Vivah girl, “On the contrary, it’s my privilege to act with iconic superstar like Amitabh Bachchan in Satyagraha, with whom I have scenes almost throughout the movie as I play his daughter-in-law. It was such an amazing learning experience for me working with Bachchan-Sir who is humility and chivalry personified. “In this political thriller, I play a modern qualified school teacher called Sumitra who gets victimised, even as she ardently pursues her dreams. My topical, realistic rebel role has a strong common-manconnect,” insists the chirpy Rao who will continue to be seen in her patented pretty-woman-next-door image, although it’s a more intense role. Meanwhile, Amrita, who was recently seen in a wacko role in Jolly LLB, is also excited about her upcoming movie Singh Sahab The Great where she plays a journalist-reporter opposite Sunny Deol. Not many are aware that Amrita religiously loves to watch the black ’n white Hindi movies of the 50s era . Confides the Main Hoon Na actress, “It has always been my discreet dream to work in a recreated movie of the ‘black and white’ golden era and dance onscreen to one of those racy retromelodies,” smiles the cherubic actress who is euphoric that “today’s fast-paced ‘WhatsApp’ generation will connect with the inspiring patriotic song woven around the devotional musical mantra Raghupati Raghav Rajaram (Gandhiji’s favourite) when they watch Satyagraha.”

W

hen the city and nation is rocked by crimes against women, memory goes back to the 1978 film Ghar, perhaps the only Hindi film that dealt sensitively with the subject of rape. Written by Dinesh Thakur and directed by Manik Chatterjee, the film told the story of how a loving couple’s life falls to pieces when the wife is raped. Vinod Mehra played Vikas and Rekha, his wife Aarti. Newly married, deeply in love (beautiful Gulzar-RD Burman songs to express their emotions) they are busy making a home. One day, they go to see a late night film—the theatre was Chandan in Juhu, which back then was in a deserted spot, over the years the area has developed into a buzzing space. They are attacked by a group of drunks—Vikas is hit on the head and falls unconscious, and Aarti is raped. When they return from hospital, she is in a state of trauma. She keeps reliving the incident her mind and believes that she is defiled. Her husband is unable to reach into her space of pain, because she thinks that after what happened, he could not possibly love her, his caring must be pity. Vikas’s trying to pretend that nothing happened is also a way of denial. There is also the fear that everyone is looking at them and judging them, even though they are in no way to blame for what happened. One can imagine that must be what goes through the mind of a woman who has been raped, particularly in a society where chastity is so highly valued. The subject was handled with an empathy that has

Mandakini in a scene from the movie Ram Teri Ganga Maili rarely been seen in Hindi cinema. So disturbing was it, that for months afterwards, girls would avoid going to that part of Juhu. Till then, most Hindi films used rape as titillation or as a plot point to give the hero an

Mallika’. Mallika has already started shooting for her much awaited series, which is the Indian version of American competitive reality dating game show ‘The Bachelor’. The actress will soon have a friend and confidante in Indo-Canadian adult film star Sunny Leone, who will help her choose the best. Sunny is headed to Udaipur to help Mallika choose the right man from the 30 contestants, vying for her attention. The show is produced by SOL Productions and has officially acquired the rights of the international reality series. had the rape victim dying or committing suicide, because a patriarchal society could not contemplate a ‘normal’ life for a woman whose ‘izzat’ had been lost. Occasionally, the hero who ‘accepted’ such a woman was projected as a noble soul. Amiya Chakrabarty’s 1953 film with the unsavoury title Patita (fallen woman), starring Dev Anand and Usha Kiron was a rare film in its time, in which a woman who is raped is accepted into society with her child, even if the man who loves her has to launch elaborate charade to convince his mother. There have been other films like Ram Teri Ganga Maili Ho Gayi, Prem Rog (both by Raj Kapoor) that make a case, after much melodrama, for the ‘acceptance’ of a raped woman by a man and consequently,

by society. There is the matter of the terminology used in films—izzat lut gayi, barbad ho gayi, zinda laash ban gayi, aisi zindagi se maut behtar, etc that convey that rape is the end of a woman’s existence. Shabana Azmi once recalled an instance when she had to argue with the director of one of her films, in which the character of her daughter was raped and was expected to suddenly appear in black clothes and look tragic. Shabana wanted the girl to wear regular clothes and be reassured that what had happened was not her fault. It has become even more imperative now to deal with the issue of violence against women with maturity and understanding, by first doing away with the term “izzat lut gayi.” The very concept of honour has to change.

We need to reassess things, says Kareena after Mumbai gangrape

I

n the backdrop of the Mumbai gangrape case, actress Kareena Kapoor feels that its time to reassess things and bring in stricter laws to ensure women safety in India. “It’s difficult to be secure in India. It is not safe. I think we need to change our laws, we need to reassess things. Because the youth of the country is in anger... I am hoping through them we will be able to reassess laws of this nation,” Kareena told PTI. “These unfortunate incidents used to happen in small places.. And now in Mumbai. Rapes are happening all over the country…There are places where things are not getting reported... Maybe I feel it is because of lack of education,” she said. “My sister has a six-year-old daughter so we want her to be safe when she grows up. And I am hoping that when she grows up there will be some kind of change in the society at least by then she would be 16,” she added. The 32-year-old actor feels media has a responsibility to disseminate information and at the same time highlight the guilty but “cinema cannot provide a solution to any problem in general.” “Cinema is not meant to do something, the government must do something. We are actors we are not politicians. It is a bonus if there is an inspirational feeling among people after watching a film. But ultimately its a film so it is meant to entertain people,” she said. On August 22, a 23-year-old photo journalist was gang raped by five men in the desolate Shakti Mills Compund in Lower Parel here when she went there on an assignment alongwith her male colleague.

hear that duo is all set to take their relationship a step further. Reportedly, Kapoor is ready to go down on his knee and propose to Kat on his birthday. Though it was earlier reported that Ranbir’s parents, Neetu Singh and Rishi Kapoor are not too happy with

their son’s relationship with Kaif, a source claims that Ranbir has already made up his mind. However, Katrina’s spokeperson has rubbished the rumours, stating that Ranbir would be busy promoting his film Besharam during his birthday.

Manoj Kumar to withdraw case against SRK A

ctor Manoj Kumar, also known as ‘Bharat’ for his patriotic roles, has reportedly decided to withdraw the case that he had filed against Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan and filmmaker Farah Khan for allegedly mocking him in Om Shanti Om. Kumar’s lawyer confirmed the news and said that the veteran decided to withdraw the case, not because he has forgiven the duo, but because he feels that it has failed in

achieving the objective of bringing some sense of responsibility to Shah Rukh Khan and Farah Khan. The lawyer further added that despite all assurances and promises, SRK failed to remove the objectionable scenes from the said film and the same scenes were reproduced in the new prints released internationally. In a humorous scene in Om Shanti Om, SRK is seen mimicking Manoj Kumar’s signature gestures to enter a movie-hall discreetly and this had miffed the veteran actor.

Government employees can expect a major promotion along with a transfer to an important centre. There may be certain gains through buying/selling of some land, a house, or a vehicle. Romantic life will be a source of joy and excitement. BABIES BORN TODAY: Beautiful, tall, lean body, healthy and long-lived. Intelligent, social mentally alert, quick witted, they could be misunderstood occasionally. After a good education, a career as a financial advisor or administrative services would lead to gain. Considerable wealth and happiness is indicated. ARIES (March 21 - April 20): Work that you are pursing is not happening the way it should. It is time to change your stance or strategy. You will be surprised at the results. After consistent setbacks you will begin to feel that things are moving in the right direction after all. You may have the dissatisfied feeling that your loved ones are not doing enough to help you but at the moment it is best to let things be as they are.

TAURUS (April 21 - May 20): Though you are doing very well for yourself at work you may still suffer a few anxious moments regarding a new work proposal. Rest assured that you would win the day whatever be the circumstances. Just bear in mind that others do not dissuade you from your task by causing alarm. Your love life will be turbulent for a few days. The married will find their mate out of sorts, perhaps due to a spell of depression or perhaps because of some family problem.

GEMINI (May 21 - June 20): At work you need to be a bit more diplomatic today. Though it appears that your opponents have the upper hand, but you will win the day eventually. Handle the situation in a dignified diplomatic manner and you would have won the admiration of all concerned. You will be entertaining everyone till quite late at night. Trying to please everyone could tell on your nerves especially after a tough day at work.

CANCER (June 21 - July 21): You will get new offers with financial aid and other assistance. Try to complete your on-going ventures first, for chasing new deals without fulfilling earlier obligations will result in a setback. You could also lose out on your new project because others may feel that you are untrustworthy. Your need for an emotional relationship with someone you know or are mixed up with will be a possibility.

LEO (July 22 - August 21): Look forward to new developments and work offers. Take your time to pick and choose what you really want. A purchase of some property or house will be an asset that you have been planning for long and are now within your grasp. However make sure to buy a house having ready possession. Take time to choose what you really want from life. Strong romantic influences around are tempting. You could get drawn into an association with a person who could become difficult to forget.

VIRGO (August 22 - September 21): Expansion of your work activities may include trying your hand at some creative activity. This is a good chance to work on something that you have always wanted. Future prospects look very bright. You can also look forward to some great times with loved ones and a spontaneous outing.

LIBRA (September 22 - October 22): You may be feeling a little under the weather for no apparent reason at all. Subconsciously you may be seeking a change, which does not seem to be happening right now. If you are patient you will hear some good news later in the day which gladdens your heart. Destiny at times works faster if we leave burning issues alone and get on with life. A good time to party hard and meet your friends.

SCORPIO (October 23 - November 21): Things go according to plans but you could be running against time to meet deadlines. Be patient with those who exasperate you. Handle finances with great care. All the hard work that you put in will help you in the long run. Keep in touch with associates regularly. Squabbles in your love life are intriguing and exasperating. Stop looking for answers as you will only succeed in confusing the issue further.

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 December 20): Wait a while before thinking of making any changes in your working environment. A change of job or work at this juncture is not advisable. Do not be carried away by attractive promises of financial gains and avoid investing any money in ventures about which you know very little.

CAPRICORN (December 21 - January 19): No doubt that you have been working very hard both at work and at your relationships, but somehow you have been running into problems and misunderstandings. However a certain development today may make you realize that your efforts were not in vain. Try not to show how overwhelmed you are. A casual relationship suddenly changes color to something romantic and meaningful. This could be the start of something much deeper.

AQUARIUS (January 20 - February 18): Personal initiatives will help a lot, but joint ventures or teamwork could be more beneficial. Someone from overseas will be in touch. Keep your mind open to new ideas and views. Financially it is a rewarding day. You can look forward good news in the mail. Fears and uncertainties are a part of life but when discussed with a person who cares for you somehow it eases the burden and makes life easier.

PISCES (February 19 - March 20): Avoid arguments with colleagues for that could vitiate the atmosphere at work. Be firm but not offensive. People look up to you for strength so you cannot afford to be inept. Expenses are high, but if you work out your plan systematically the money invested now will bring manifold profit. In marital relationships keep calm for there could be a clash of opinion over minor issues. It may have to do with investments.

EW YORK: Defending champion Andy Murray put on a US Open late night special, taking out his frustrations with the chaos-causing rain and event schedulers but two-time winner Venus Williams slipped to defeat. Third-seeded Murray, who snapped Britain's 76-year wait for a men's Grand Slam champion when he triumphed in New York last year, needed just 98 minutes to get past 33-year-old Frenchman Michael Llodra, 6-2, 6-4, 6-3. But his match only got underway at 9:55 p.M. (0155GMT) -- the third-latest start for a US Open night session -- after a four-hour rain suspension earlier in the day. That delay was compounded when 2009 champion Juan Martin del Potro and Guillermo Garcia-Lopez battled out a four-hour, 13minute dogfight on the same Arthur Ashe Stadium, which the Argentine sixth seed won 6-7 (5/7), 6-4, 7-6 (9/7). "I think playing at that time for your first round is not ideal," said Murray, who hit 34 w i n n e r s against just five unforced errors to book a match with Argentina's Leonardo Mayer for a place in the last 32. "It's not whether it's me, it's anyone. Just because I won last year, it's nothing to do with that. It's just more for the guys that have to play this evening, and you have guys that have two days off between matches."

Amongst Murray's leading rivals for the title, Rafael Nadal completed his first round match on Monday, 48 hours earlier, while top seed Novak Djokovic and five-time winner Roger Federer both wrapped up their openers on Tuesday. Del Potro and Garcia-Lopez had provided the earlier spice for the Murray headliner when they exchanged angry words over the number of injury

timeouts that the Spaniard was taking. "I just asked about the medical timeout because I didn't know how many or how long. He explained to me then the chair umpire also, and that's it," said Del Potro diplomatically. Del Potro, beaten by Djokovic in the longest Wimbledon semi-final of all time last month, goes on to face 2001 champion Lleyton Hewitt, who saw off Brian Baker 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. Williams, the US Open champion in 2000 and 2001 and a seven-time Grand Slam singles title winner, went down in a threehour, second-round clash to tenacious Chinese player Zheng Jie. Andy Murray of Britain pumps his fist after winning a point against Michael Llodra of France during the first round of the 2013 U.S. Open tennis tournament.

Dinesh, two other boxers allege bias in World C’ship trials

www.afternoondc.in

MUMBAI | FRIDAY, AUGUST 30, 2013

B Boxers Dinesh, Dilbagh and Praveen who accused the Indian Boxing Federation (IBF) of discrimination against them, in Patiala on Thursday. All three have left out of the Indian Squad for the World Boxing Championship, to be held in Kazakhstan next month.

PATIALA: The selection of the Indian team for the World Boxing Championships has run into a controversy with three pugilists, including Arjuna awardee Dinesh Kumar, threatening to take the panel to court even as Olympian Akhil Kumar vowed to sue one of them for dragging his name into the furore. Dinesh (91kg), Dilbag Singh (69kg) and Praveen Kumar (+91kg) have alleged that the coaches and the selection committee ignored them, despite their "good performance" in the trial bouts which concluded yesterday. Asian Games silver-medallist Manpreet Singh (91kg), Asian Championships silvermedallist Mandeep Jangra and reigning national champion Satish (+91kg) were the boxers who were picked ahead of them for the October 11 to 27 World Championships in Kazakhstan. The three dissenting boxers were beaten in exciting open trial bouts yesterday in front of a packed hall of fellow boxers and a selection panel which included veterans such as Mehtab Singh and Padam Bahadur Mal besides Indian Boxing Federation Secretary General Rajesh Bhandari. "We will take the selection committee to the court for this unfair decision," Dinesh said at a press conference.

‘CHHOTA TYSON’ AT CROSSROADS AFTER RAVAGED BY INJURIES A colossal name in Indian boxing despite his diminutive frame, M Suranjoy Singh is currently at a crossroads after failing to make the cut for the World Championships due to an injury-ravaged body which could not recreate the magic that gave him the nickname 'Chhota Tyson', at the justconcluded national trials here. The 27-year-old is best remembered for winning an unprecedented seven back-toback international gold medals, including the top honours at the Asian Championships and the Commonwealth Games, between 2009 and 2010. But life changed drastically for him after he lost his mother in December 2010. His form dipped and the last major international event in which he made his presence felt was the 2012 World Military Games where the Manipur-lad settled for a bronze medal. His physical breakdown started with minor niggles becoming major complications so much so that he had to go under the knife for a troubling knee, which is getting better but not yet a 100 per cent. "Life changed completely at the end of 2010. Losing my mother was massive blow and it took me a lot of time to come to terms with it. And eventually some injuries also began to hamper me. I still don't feel fit," Suranjoy, who competed nonstop between 2009-10 in the 52kg division, told PTI in an interview.

ARCELONA, SPAIN: Lionel Messi missed a late penalty attempt before Barcelona clinched the Spanish Super Cup despite being held to a 0-0 draw by 10-man Atletico Madrid. Messi had a chance to put the result beyond doubt in 89th but fired his penalty kick off the crossbar to finish a forgettable night for the Argentina star yesterday. Barcelona eventually claimed the trophy on away goals following the 1-1 draw in the opening leg last week. Atletico's disciplined defense stifled a Barcelona's attack featuring Neymar making his first starting appearance for his new club. And the visitors enjoyed the best scoring opportunities other than Messi's penalty attempt but weren't able to get the critical goal, mainly because of Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes. Atletico's chances were hurt in the 81st when Filipe Luis was given a red card for apparently hitting Dani Alves. The scoreless draw meant Neymar's first-leg goal was the difference. "I'm happy with the title. Whenever there is a title in play what counts is winning it," Barcelona coach Gerardo Martino said. "But as far as the team goes, I want to

see more. Above all in these types of games, we need to find more precision and the ability to create more spaces." Messi was back for Barcelona after missing one game due to a left thigh injury sustained in the opening Super Cup match last week. But the four-time world player of the year was not his usual dynamic self, lacking his spark and finishing touch. He uncharacteristically scuffed a close-

range shot off a pass from Sergio Busquets to start his off night. Martino gave Neymar his first start in his fourth official game for Barcelona since his move from Santos in June. Messi and Neymar had only previously been on the pitch together for seven minutes because Martino said he wanted to ease the 21-year-old Brazil striker into his new team. But those eager to see the two together were disappointed. While Messi

was below par, Neymar wasn't able to exploit his speed and dribbling against Atletico's physical defense. "I think that individually they both played well," Martino said of the pair. "It's true they didn't find one another or combine much. With Neymar playing on the left and Messi tending to move out to the right, they are far away. But I don't doubt they will find each other."

IN BRIEF Bailey backs Johnson for Ashes return

LONDON: Australia Twenty20 captain George Bailey has backed Mitchell Johnson to return to Test duty when Ashes hostilities are resumed 'Down Under' in November. Left-arm fast bowler Johnson did not feature in the Australia side that suffered a 3-0 Ashes series defeat in England but has been selected in the squad for the forthcoming limited-overs series, starting with the first Twenty20 international at Southampton. Johnson became a figure of fun among England fans in recent Ashes because of his often wayward deliveries but Bailey insisted the 31-year-old's raw pace, which has helped him take 205 Test wickets, meant he could yet return to the five-day format.

Broad hits back at Vaughan criticism of England squad

LONDON: England Twenty20 captain Stuart Broad has accused former skipper Michael Vaughan of being "disrespectful" for criticising the decision to rest several leading players from the upcoming one-day internationals against Australia. Test skipper Alastair Cook, Ian Bell, James Anderson, Graeme Swann and Broad himself, who all featured in the recent 3-0 Ashes series win, were all left out of the squads announced Tuesday for the lone one-dayer against Ireland and the fivematch ODI campaign against Australia. Australia too have made wholesale changes -- only seven of their 18-man ODI squad played in the Test series -- and it's clear both countries are already looking ahead to the return Ashes in Australia in November.
