State Board initiates move to close junior colleges with zero passing record in HSC exams I

By Yatin Ingle

n an initiative unheard of before, the state board has decided to shut down junior colleges with lower passing percentages. After recording 75 junior colleges with zero pass percentage in the HSC board examinations, the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE) has brought out a new recommendation which states that colleges with zero pass percentage will be shut down, and strict inspections will be carried out by the State Board and education officers to verify the reasons for the low percentage.

Every year, around 12 lakh students across Maharashtra appear for the HSC board exams from almost 1 lakh junior colleges. Amongst these junior colleges, around 300 junior colleges have shown zero pass percentage in the HSC board exams. In 2013, around 9 lakh students across Maharashtra appeared for the HSC board exams from 1 lakh junior colleges of which 75 colleges with zero pass percentage were from the Mumbai and Thane regions. Farheen Siddiqui News producer No. I don’t think it will act as a deterrent. There is no point in cutting off the genitals. It will not serve the purpose. The mentality of people needs to change. Zahabiya Takulla Service No. I feel it won’t discourage rape. The judicial system should improve. In spite of harsh punishments these incidents tend to occur. Manek Kalyaniwala Lawyer Yes. lady admitted in Wockhardt Hospital in Vashi recently underwent a brain surgery similar to the one Bollywood actor Hrithik Roshan had undergone in July 2013, the only difference being the lady’s age – 99 years. Rugmini Govindan Nair from Dombivali was brought to Wockhardt Hospital in an unconscious stated with a dilated pupil. The CT Scan revealed that the patient was suffering from Chronic Subdural Hematoma (a condition similar to Hrithik’s). Considering the patient was 99-years-old, it was a risky surgery. Dr. Sunil Kutty, Neurosurgeon, Wockhardt Hospitals said, “In chronic subdural Hematoma, the blood slowly leaks out of the veins surrounding the brain to form a clot. Probably the patient must have suffered from some injury, and hence over the last five to six days she had been feeling drowsy. I’m amazed at the fact that she had no hypertension, diabetes or any such co-morbid conditions at the age of 99. With her family’s support, we could operate on her successfully”. Dr. Anuj Tiwari, Hospital Head, Wockhardt Hospitals, Vashi said, “Rugmini Nair is an inspiration for everyone. Rugmini Govindan Nair, 99, recuperating at the Wockhardt Hospital after her brain surgery.

What is Chronic Subdural Hematoma?

A chronic subdural hematoma is a collection of blood and the products of its breakdown between the surface of the brain and its outermost covering – called the dura. In this condition, the blood slowly leaks out of the veins surrounding the brain to form a clot. The condition is termed ‘chronic’ because it manifests for several weeks after it first starts to bleed.

he biggest festival of the year is here! With Diwali round the corner, Mumbai’s streets are buzzing with shoppers all in search for that perfect ‘toran’, lantern and other festive goodies. From hand-painted to decorative shaped ones, designer diyas, people are gearing up to look their best, decorate their homes grandly, most importantly have the brightness of different lights cascading their homes. The streets in Lalbaug, Kalachowkie, Parel, Shivaji Park, Dadar and other areas are equally crowded during the evenings with people buying lanterns and other decorative items from the roadside stalls at these places. All this takes considerable trips to shops and markets and that is what everyone is busy doing. Our lensman Azad Shrivastav captures the celebratory mood, visiting some of the places most thronged by people during Diwali.

day after a writer from Madhya Pradesh moved the Bombay High Court alleging copyright violation of the script of Hrithik Roshan-starrer Krrish-3 and sought a stay on the all India release of the film this Friday unless he was given a compensation of Rs two crore, the Bombay High Court on Tuesday refused to grant relief to the writer. This means that the Bollywood sci-fi film Krrish-3 will release as scheduled on November 1. Uday Singh Rajput, a resident of Sagar district in Madhya Pradesh, had filed a petition claiming he had written the script titled Krrish-2 which was a sequel to Krrish part 1. However, when Justice Kathawala asked Rajput if he could produce the original receipt of the post office showing that the script was mailed to Roshan, he replied in negative and said that he had lost the receipt. While hearing the matter on Tuesday, Justice S.J. Kathalwala observed, “This is an incorrect and dishonest plaint. He is not entitled to stop the release of the film as he is dishonest to the court.” This is because the verification clause in the petition was left blank which the justice said was not right and raised doubts whether the contents were read out and explained to the petitioner and the facts mentioned in the suit were denied by the plaintiff orally in the court. Based on this, the court asked Rajput to step into witness box. On being questioned when he had met Roshan, Rajput told the court that

A Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) group leader put forth the idea of the Group Leaders visit to Istanbul to see the BRT service operate as a mode of transport, which has already been incorporated in Lahore, Pakistan earlier this year. The same system, known as Janmarg, is already in place in Ahmedabad since 2009 and even Mumbai’s neighbouring city, Pune has the service in place. Istanbul opened its BRTS in 2007 and an estimated 8 lakh people use this service daily. According to reports, Turkish authorities helped to develop the same service in Lahore in 2013. The first BRT system in the world was implemented in Curitiaba in Brazil in 1974 and was the brain child of Curitiba Mayor, Jaime Lerner.

More youth voters in Thane-Pune belt

he fact that the electoral canvas of the state has undergone a tremendous change in terms of the youth factor is well known by now. A new interesting trend that has now emerged following the summary revision of the electoral rolls (voter list) carried out in September by the Election Commission of India (ECI) is that the urbanised industrial belts of the Thane and Pune regions has seen a substantial increase in the registration of voters in the age group of 20 to 29 and 30 to 39 years. But it is all youth all the way. Another significant factor that has emerged is the substantial presence of super senior citizens or voters older than 80 years of age in the voters list. Speaking to the ADC yesterday, Dr. Surendra Jondhale, Head of Department, University of Mumbai, attributed the sharp rise in the registration of youth voters to political activism on the part of political parties. “If it is voluntary on the part of the youth then it shows that the youth have become more politically concerned. There is no doubt that the political parties and politicians will have to pay more attention to this new emerging trend,” remarked Dr. Jondhale. Out of the total voter population of 7.62 crores as on September 16, the voter population in the age bracket of 18 to 39 years alone ac-

counts for 3.30 crore voters (almost 28 per cent). Expectedly, the voter population in the age group of 18 to 19 years is 8.77 lakhs (0.75 per cent) which is slightly less, given the fact that this age group is more inclined towards academic pursuits rather than being worried about politics. However, there is a sharp rise of 10.09 per cent in the voter population in the age group of 20 to 29 years which is now at 1.18 crores. The rise however, is more significant in the age group of 30 to 39 years which has reached 2.03 crores (17.26 per cent). There is another significant addition to the age cohort, which is the significant presence of 23.43 lakh voters (1.99 percent) who are in the age group of 80 plus years. But when one considers the major urban regions of the state like Mumbai, Thane, Nashik and Pune, the concentration of voters in the above age cohort becomes all the more apparent. The migration of voters from Mumbai City district is well known, but that it has moved beyond Mumbai Suburban district parties now cannot afford to ignore into more industrialised Thane, this significant shift in the voter Nashik and Pune districts is quite base. Although the voter population of significant. Politicians and political

Assembly constituencies with significant age cohort:

18 to 19 years – Niphad – 3,595 voters 20 to 29 years – Bhosari – 48,685 voters 30 to 39 years – Airoli – 1,06,476 voters 80-plus years – Mira-Bhayandar – 28,059 voters

23.66 lakh in the 10 assembly constituencies in Mumbai City district is less as compared to other districts, here also the voter population in terms of assembly constituencies shows a spread out to the fringes of the district. The concentration appears to be more felt in the assembly constituency of Sion-Koliwada which records a voter population in the age group of 18 to 19 years at 2,510, in the 20 to 29 age group at 33,504, and 74,548 voters in the age group of 30 to 39 years. The Mumbai Suburban district which has a voter population of 70.35 lakh spread over 26 assembly constituencies, the concentration of the voter population in the age group of 18 to 19 years (2,938 voters) is seen in Kandivali East, whereas the largest concentration of voter population in the age group of 20 to 29 years (39,935 voters) and 85,287 voters in the 30 to 39 years is seen in Mankhurd-Shivajinagar assembly constituency. In the neighbouring Thane district which has a voter population of 68.04 lakh, the spread of the voter population and its age composition appears to be even and significant in the 24 assembly constituencies. The Murbad assembly constituency has 3,342 voters in the the age group of 18 to 19 years. The Kopri Pachpkhadi assembly constituency has a significant population of 43,649 voters in the age group of 20 to 29 years. Significantly, the Airoli assembly constituency has 1.06 lakh

voters in the age group of 30 to 39 years. What is interesting to note is that 28,059 voters in the MiraBhayandar assembly constituency are above the age of 80 years. The 15 more urbanised assembly constituencies of the Nashik district account for a voter population of 36.83 lakhs. The spread of the voter population and its age composition appears to be similar to that of Thane district. The maximum of 3,595 voters in the age group of 18 to 19 years are in the Niphad assembly constituency. There are 43,218 voters in the age group of 20 to 29 years in the Yeola assembly constituency, while the Nashik West assembly constituency has 91,966 voters in the age group of 30 to 39 years. In the urbanised 21 assembly constituencies in the Pune district which has a voter population of 60.66 lakh, the Bhosari assembly constituency shows a significant rise in the voter population in almost all the age groups. There are 3,423 voters in the age group of 18 to 19 years, 48,685 voters in the age group of 20 to 29 years and 1.03 lakh voters in the age group of 30 to 39 years all in Bhosari assembly constituency which is the highest in the region. Elsewhere in the state, the assembly constituencies that have shown significant rise in voter populations in the above age groups include – Paranda, Gangakhed, Chinchwad and Mira-Bhayandar.

whatever way possible to save our homes,” said a Campa Cola resident. Nandini Mehta, a resident of Campa Cola said, “Today the residents are faced with a situation that they have to demolish not only the homes that are beyond the permissible limit but 46 per cent of what has been asked to be demolished is within the FSI limit, which as per the laws of the state, can be regularised with a penalty. The residents are therefore requesting the

Chief Minister through their demonstration that he exercises his discretionary powers as the head of the legislative machinery and pass an ordinance to save the homes that are within the permissible FSI.” Apart from this, the renowned Jain guru Maharaj Sab Shri Nay Padma Sagarji held a religious discourse at Campa Cola Compound where he asked the residents to find inner strength in the times of crisis.

State Board has recommended the shutting down of these junior colleges. Uday Nare, Teacher, Hansraj Morarji Public School, Andheri (West), says, “This is a correct decision by the State Board. If teachers cannot get students to study and put down the correct answers, then what is the use of such colleges? Students pay fees to learn and teachers get paid to teach. If these teachers and colleges are not able to do their duties, then the state board’s decision is correct.

100% - FAIL! At times, it happens that the pass percentage is low, but at least a few students pass. If none of them are able to pass the exams, then there has to be something wrong in these colleges.” As per the recommendation, an inquiry will be set up by the State Board and the Education Department against those junior colleges with a pass percentage of zero. As soon as the inspections are carried out, the reports will be for-

warded to the School Education Department which will then take the final decision over the shutting down of these junior colleges. When the ADC spoke to Laxmikanth Pandey, Chairman, MSBSHSE, Mumbai Division, he said, “Students pay fees in colleges to study and make a career. If colleges are unable to secure better passing percentages, then the students are at loss. Strict action will be taken against these junior colleges and an inquiry will be set up to find out the reasons behind the lower percentages.”

Opposing the circular, the petitioner claimed that such "last minute" circulars cause losses to the traders as they have already accepted orders from customers before the Diwali festival. The customers would not then want to buy the sweets which would cause them heavy losses, it claimed. The petitioner further alleged the order was a ploy to stop the sale of Indian sweets. The petitioner also claimed the civic body had no powers to regulate the sale of sweets. layam Singh Yadav in a depressed mood. According to those present, Mulayam lamented that his party would get less than 15 seats in the next Lok Sabha elections. The candid admission surprised all those present because not too long ago, Mulayam had been boasting about bagging 40 to 50 seats and becoming the next prime minister. He conceded that the Muzzaffarnagar riots had done the SP in but defended son Akhilesh stoutly from criticism by the gathering.

POWER TALK Arati R. Jerath Mulayam was not the only one in a gloomy mood. All the Lohia-ites present looked depressed as they discussed the rise and rise of the BJP in UP. Some went so far as to predict that the saffron party would bag 40 seats unless the Congress and BSP entered into a seat-sharing arrangement. The general consensus was that a pre-poll Congress-BSP alliance was the only way to stop Narendra Modi from walking into New Delhi as PM. Significantly, Mulayam kept quiet while all this talk went on around him. He was silent even when someone suggested a three-way alliance between the Congress, BSP and SP to stop the rise of the BJP. handpicked by Modi and will assume charge of everything, from manifestoes, rallies and publicity to the most crucial aspect of an election – ticket distribution. Clearly, Modi intends to leave no stone unturned to win Delhi. With Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) posing an unexpected challenge to both the Congress and the BJP, the Delhi election is turning into a cliffhanger. Modi has decided to make a go of it but many in the party feel that it’s too late. The dithering on the leadership issue may have cost the BJP the election. Modi has lent a helping hand to Vasundhara Raje in Rajasthan too. A team from Gujarat has been parked in Jaipur for some months now to help Raje with poll modalities. With three election victories in Gujarat to his credit, Modi is regarded as a poll wizard. Interestingly, while Raje sought his help, the chief ministers of Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, Shivraj Chouhan and Raman Singh, are believed to have insisted on full autonomy. The upcoming assembly elections are being seen in BJP circles as a test of Modi’s golden touch. His poll expertise is on trial in Rajasthan and Delhi whereas the results in MP and Chhattisgarh will decide the future of regional chieftains in a Modi-led BJP.

FTER having found the cause of the suffering of the baby, the mother can fix and change the situation very quickly. If the baby is hungry and a bottle of milk, if the diaper is too tight, she just change diaper and then both mother and the baby will be happy. As a practitioner, you do the same. If that is a minor irritation. A good practitioner should be able to transform it in just a few minutes. If that is a more important energy of anger, the practitioner has to be more patient. She should continue to generate energy of mindfulness in order to embrace tenderly her anger. She can do better with mindfulness and concentration. She can look deeply into the nature of her anger and find out the roots. There is nothing that can survive without food. That is what the Buddha said, the Buddha as a teacher, not as a god. We quote the Buddha like we quote the Sukrat. The Buddha is a human being. He had suffered a lot. He

had practiced and was able to transform his suffering and was able to help many people. He didn't want us to worship him as a god at all. He commanded that. It is not necessary for people to become a Buddhist in order to practice mindfulness and to profit from the teaching of the Buddha.

MATTER & SPIRIT We have set up centers of practice of mindfulness that are entirely non-sectarian in America and in Europe. There's no incense burning, there's no Buddhist statue. Everyone coming from every tradition enjoy the practice because the practice of mindfulness can be entirely non-sectarian. The Buddha said nothing can survive without food. Your love, you have to feed your love. Otherwise, your love will die. You have to feed your love with the ap-

propriate food. Otherwise, your love will turn into hatred very soon, maybe after two years or less. Your depression also, if the depression has come to you because you have fed it, there's a seed of depression in you and you have lived in such a way in the last five or six months and, giving that seed of depression daily food, that is why the depression has come to you. And if you look deeply into the nature of your depression and identify the source of nutriment that you have used to feed it, you are already on the path of freedom. If you can identify the source of food for your depression, you lose track of the source of nutriments and a few months later, your depression will die. That is what the Buddha said. Literally he said what has come to be, what has come to be? Namely, illness, suffering, violence, despair. What has come to be? -- Thich Nhat Hanh

LOOKING at the current political situation, BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi cannot lead the country effectively if he inspires fear and antipathy among people as he has shown no ability to work with his opposition parties or tolerate dissent. He has already alienated BJP’s political partners when Janata Dal (United) – an important regional party broke off its 17-year old alliance with the party because it found that Modi is unacceptable. India is a country with multiple religions and Modi cannot hope to lead it effectively with his authoritative style of functioning which has been proved when more than 1000 people died in the 2002 Gujarat riots and the economic record that he boasts of is rubbish and misleading and way behind other states with more than 40 per cent of the poor living below poverty line and Muslims in Gujarat are much more likely to be poor.

Cricket and Sachin in India WHATEVER said and done Team India is too good in pulling defeat from the jaws of defeat. They did it in the past and everything happened in front of a full capacity crowd on a Saturday Sports Special at the Mohali ground. We showered praise on Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina, Yuvraj Singh and Ravindra Jadeja. As fielders they need to make acrobatic stops and reduce the rate of scoring with their consistent and safe fielding. We get to see our commentators praise the four for nothing special. Kohli, Raina, Yuvraj and Jadeja were a dismal failure with the bat and it they fail in fielding there is no need to have them in the side. Despite being tall, Ishant Sharma is a very poor fielder and Ravindra Jadeja’s last over miss allowed additional runs and helped Faulkner to retain strike and finish off the match in style. Had Team India stopped 10-15 runs in the death overs, it could have won by at least 10 runs or we could have gone for a close finish. — Calicut K. Subramaniam, Mumbai.

The master blaster is now gearing up for his last test in November his place in the side in other countries. But selectors lack the much needed acumen to give a long rope to Ishant. It is time to infuse young blood instead of trying a tested Ishant Sharma all the time. We have talented fast bowlers from Delhi, Haryana, UP, Punjab and Kerala and trying a tired bowler is a futile attempt. Even if the traumatised bowler from the Indian team takes five or six wickets in the remaining games, he has already caused the damage to Team India, which is irreparable

AT a time when Sachin Tendulkar was playing his last Ranji match at Lahli in Haryana, Sabastian Vettel clinched the fourth World title with Indian GP hat-trick at Noida. Similarly, when Sachin is hogging the limelight, Vishwanathan Anand is training for a title and away from the spotlight. The chess wizard is hitting the top honors against World No. 1 Carlsen. In the fight for supremacy, Tendulkar finished off with a score of 5 runs of 7 balls in 9 minutes before being clean bowled by Mohit Sharma. Honors and accolades all came in the master blaster’s way but he failed in his probable last innings. What will the Indian team do if the master blaster fails against West Indies? Perhaps, his short selection, eye sight and timing must have gone at this age and that was the reason for his repeated failures. — C. Maniam, Sanpada

component colours is called dispersion. The band of coloured components of a light beam is called a spectrum. A prism is a transparent medium bound by two plane surfaces inclined at an angle. When white light passes through a prism it is dispersed into seven colours in the sequence Violet, Indigo, Blue, Green, Yellow, Orange, Red (VIBGYOR). Out of the seven colours, red light bends the least while violet light bends the most. The beautiful phenomenon of the rainbow is the combination of different phenomena i.e. dispersion, refraction and reflection of light.

Scattering of light : When a ray of light is incident on extremely small particles, the particles deflect the light in different directions. This phenomenon is called scattering of light. Ͳ The size of scattering particles plays an important role related to the colour of scattering light. Ͳ Very fine particles mainly scatter blue light. Ͳ Particles of larger size can scatter white light also. Ͳ Red light is scattered the least hence can travel larger distance. Hence danger signals are red coloured . Ͳ Blue colour of sky is related to scattering of light through atmosphere. Ͳ Scattering of light does not take place at high altitudes as there is no atmosphere at high altitudes and thus the sky appears dark for the astronauts. Ͳ Even though the sky looks blue, it appears reddish or orange at sunrise or sunset. This change is also related to scattering of light.

ave you ever wondered what goes into designing the most happening machines, those scintillating wheels – for instance a ravishing Red Ferrari or a seemingly muscular Hummer or even the most magnificent of buildings that dot the skyline of mega cities? Yes, a lot of sweat, brain and money. Plus, these man-made wonders today are incomplete without two characteristics – Technology and Design. If technology is the life support system of these live examples of engineering brilliance, design is their heart and soul. It takes an entire dedicated team of designers, engineers, auto experts, architects and researchers to not just plan, initiate and carve out the design process but also to take it further to its logical conclusion.

you do this? The impact of CAD (Computer-Aided-Design) technology is revolutionising the design process across various fields says Surya Sarda, Director-Marketing & Business Development, Graebert India

Today the advent of softwares that allow a graphic 3D simulation of designs have made designing a lot easier in many fields, be it automotive, aerospace, architecture and even interior designing. In almost all fields where designing is involved, they have almost done away with the need of the drawing board and manual simulation; instead prototypes are manufactured using computer-aided techniques. Imagine the designing process of a car in the absence of technology. The first designs would be made using pen and paper. The 2D designs would be translated into prototypes manually to test their functioning and looks. However, with the advent of Computer-Aided-Design (CAD), all this has radically changed. Today, it would be difficult to even conceive of designing objects without a software based design innovation at your disposal. CAD is a software-based technology that designs a product and documents the design process. It facilitates the manufacturing process by transferring detailed diagrams of a product’s materials, processes, tolerances, and dimensions with specific conventions for the product in question. Two-dimensional or three-dimensional diagrams can be produced with the application of CAD and can also be viewed from any angle, by rotating. Continued on pg 14 «

CAD you do this? Continued from pg 13 « It finds extensive usage in architectural design, automotive, aerospace, shipbuilding industry, and of late, it is also being used in the field of animation for those special effects especially in movies. Paper and pencil were used to create most designs earlier. However, making modifications to a design was always a tedious process. Prototyping and visualisation of the design included making clay prototypes. Again, making modifications in the design and seeing the results of the design in the prototype was a tedious, inefficient process. Designing of parts using CAD has made the process much simpler. Making changes has become very easy (same concept as using a typewriter or hand written paper versus using a word processor). Some parts can be re-used in the design of other parts, so this becomes a simple cut and paste operation as opposed to re-drawing the entire part by hand. Simulations were not so easy before, now you can do all types of digital simulations using CAD. Here are some aspects of designing using CAD that people are still not well aware of: A concept called 3D solid modeling which is a relatively new technology that allows you to assign materials to designed parts and calculate mass properties such as weight, moment of inertia, volume of the part digitally without any manual calculations, is the future of CAD and will soon get popular with the designers and students. Three-dimensional printing is another technology which is very useful and simplifies the designing process. Now you can manufacture the prototype part that you design, directly at your desktop. A new generation of 3D printers has become small and economical enough for desktop use. Photorealistic rendering, Kinematic

Analysis, Interference checking, Section Analysis, Finite Element Analysis, Computer-Aided Manufacturing, are the other relatively newer domains in CAD technology. Once started using comprehensively, they are bound to bring far reaching changes and results in the design process especially in automobile designing. CAD has turned out to be an indispensable tool in various engineering colleges where Mechanical Engineering is being taught. Students of Mechanical Engineering have to use CAD throughout their course while even students of other branches get acquainted with it in their first year when all of them have to study common subjects including those related to design and engineering drawing. CAD today has become an essential part of engineering design, not just automobile but in many other trades as well. And why just engineering design, designing of all forms of objects is being done with its help, for instance you have to design a chair or for that matter a book shelf. You can easily design them sitting in your home, on your desktop by using this amazing technology. Another major advantage of CAD is

that it is very cheap; it won’t cost you a thing. You can learn it within a few days; it is very student-friendly. It is responsive and really fast, saves time. CAD has simply revolutionised the designing process, you can even calculate Product Lifecycle Management (PLM). To be precise, you can design anything and everything using the CAD. Aspiring Architects, Mechanical and Automobile Engineers, who want to create a niche for themselves in the field of design – automotive or architectural or otherwise, will benefit immensely by acquainting with this design pioneer. Today, there are plenty of opportunities in the field of design which have become easy to learn – thanks to the advent of CAD. Not just getting jobs in Engineering and other related sectors, one can also become an entrepreneur by starting his own firm if he gets well versed with this design software as the capital required will be affordable and meager. CAD has become the soul of auto designing, entire designing process in leading auto companies world over is being done with the help of CAD. It has really simplified the designing process and made it fast and highly efficient.

W

i t h every generation, the gap between children and parents seems to be increasing. What is the reason for this drift? Well, this report is significant for this matter. The major problem is of understanding. Today in the run for money and identity, parents and children are so busy that they don’t even have time to ask each other about how their day went. Less communication means lesser understanding between the two. Leaving at the time of breakfast and meeting at the time of dinner, is the speed the world is running at. The small chats that the parents and children have turn out to be arguments as in less time each one wants to explain their point of view. Problems rise when both think that they are right without understanding what the other person is trying to convey. The other problem faced is the advancing development due to modernisation; this is probably the main reason for the drift. Children think that their parents are slow and are backward while parents feel

that children are getting too fast for their age, as a result you have children trying to break free from the boundaries created by parents. Children feel that these boundaries set a limit to their talents, capabilities and resources while parents feel that increasing the line would decrease the moral, this results in widening the gap as children raise the boundary with less or no room for parents. Also, both doubt each other’s intelligence. While children feel that the imagination of something new and technology is the solution to

Oxford School’s water conservation exhibition

all problems while parents believe that wisdom and sense of the reality is more important for a better tomorrow. The answer might lie between imagination and reality but none are ready to see beyond their point. Children want everything at the speed of the bullet and work accordingly while parents with experience feel that kids are still immature and success never comes so fast, here we see a difference in perception of both parties. We are now in a world where being a chocolate boy is better than being a mamma’s boy. Another prob-

lem is interference; children feel that they should have privacy and that parents should not enter that private circle of theirs. The relations are tending to change from transparent to opaque as there is more to hide than to share, and the sad part is that the matter which is to be shared is also not shared as there is no time. Who is to be blamed, parents who are trying to make a protective shell for their kids or the kids who are in a hurry to see and feel the world? Well the truth is that the fault is of both. We are growing very fast but are not learning according to our growth.

Tolani College was established and started in 1989 and I was a student of their first batch. It was a fine new college building with a nice canteen and a feel good ambiance. I was lucky to get admission in it as my sister always joked about the difficulty I may face due to my laid back studying habits. The first day of college was awesome as it was the first day for me, my teachers, the college itself and other students too. So it was a very happy atmosphere for everyone with no nervousness and no fear. I was also very excited. I was not ragged. Some seniors wanted to rag me, but since it was their first day too, my friends and I ended up ragging them. I am friends with those seniors today and we laugh about those memories. It was easygoing for all of us. When I became a senior I ragged others; but it was healthy involving an introduction, singing and dancing on popular Bollywood numbers. My professors were adorable and so encouraging and sweet thus making me what I am today. They were the ones who pushed me towards participating in all activities that groomed my personality. Professors are big motivators as they do influence you. They encouraged me to be bold and confident about myself when it came to presenting me for any competition. I was a lazy student. I always studied during the final exams, scoring just enough to clear my examinations. I was not very good in studies and that’s why my sister usually joked that I would need to get admission in a new college because of my less than good grades. I was lucky however, that Tolani College was new and my admission was a cake walk. I was not

My friends were great people. I am still in touch with everybody from college, be it teachers or students. Two of my best friends were my college mates. We had fun and were in each other’s lives for those five years where each day had a new thrill. I once played a prank where I told a guy that a girl likes him and I told the girl that he likes her. They dated for three years and had a massive fight and caught up with my prank. This shows that I can carry a lie for a really long time. It is a funny incident but of course it made people angry. I attended only three classes of math in five years of college. The math professor was a sweetheart and once entered the classroom and complimented me on my handwriting, I asked him whether it would help me in passing math. He said no, but it meant that I had to write 300 certificates. Although I never attended his class, he was my favorite professor. As I said I was not very bright due to my laziness but whatever I heard, registered. I am what I am because of my teachers and all the learning. It has helped me grow wise and be smart. As they say, some grow wise and some otherwise. College life gives you a sense of independence. You meet a variety of students from different families. You get to share and care and study together. There are joys and sorrows. Education broadens your perspective. In the end it is the kind of education and upbringing you receive or rather the values and teaching inculcated in you through family and educators that make you and your personality. Kohinoor International School celebrates eco-friendly Diwali

K

ohinoor International School recently celebrated Diwali in an eco-friendly way. The students were made aware about the various health and environmental hazards that are caused due to busting of crackers. Also, students were made aware about child labour that prevails on a large scale in the cracker making factories. They were also acquainted with the trauma that animals and birds have to go through during Diwali. Various activities were conducted in line with the theme ‘Eco Friendly Diwali’. The students experienced the art of Diya making on a potters’ wheel where each student made a diya which they later coloured and took home. The students were also taught how to make Rangoli in an ecofriendly manner. Dried leaves, fallen flowers, pieces of left-over chart paper etc. were used to make Rangoli. Poster-making activity emphasising on the importance of changing to eco-friendly

ways to celebrate Diwali was also conducted. The students of KIS initiated spreading of awareness amongst people regarding the need for change in the way we celebrate Diwali. Over 36 KIS students participated in a street play at Phoenix Market City Mall, Kurla and at Kohinoor Business School (KBS). They shared their learning in the form of a street play. Their little but very strong voices caught the attention of the shoppers at the mall who applauded them. These confident 36 little KIS warriors further performed and conveyed the message of ecofriendly Diwali to the management students, staff and faculty members of Kohinoor Business School. KBS students were amazed at the performances and the reality of child labour which exists in our society. This Diwali is surely about ‘being’ the change one wants to see. That’s what the students of Kohinoor International School have pledged to themselves.

The concept of DIY: Do It Yourself (DIY) is a method, which involves building, modifying or repairing something without the help of experts or professionals. In academic language, DIY is described as a behavior, in which an individual uses raw and semi-raw materials and components to produce, transform, or reconstruct material possessions. These also include those that are drawn from the natural environment such as landscaping. Various motivations can trigger a DIY behavior in children/adults. These factors are categorised as marketplace motivations and identity enhancement. While the first includes economic benefits, lack of product quality, lack of product availability, and the need for customisation, the latter comprises craftsmanship, community seeking, empowerment, and uniqueness. Why DIY? The attention span of children is very short, and that’s why teaching them through the rote method of learning becomes a tough task. The process of learning from text books has not been able to deliver desired results. By disassembling traditional educational products and processes into modular pieces, we can allow children as well as educa<<Anil Goyal tors to amalgamate apps, lessons and processes to make learning more appealing, enjoyable and effective for an individual learner or a group. This calls for personalised learning. Under this concept, students are no more required to learn together in lockstep, from the similar material at the same pace and time. It invites children to tinker with different learning and non-learning materials by exercising their brains. It’s like breaking building blocks apart and then putting them back together, while in the due course making room for some new building

The best part of these tools and technologies is that they are also available online or can be brought into classrooms through cloud. Many of these tools can also be handcrafted by educators. A good mix of these online and handcrafted tools and technologies offer children multiple choices, give them more freedom, and allow further personalisation and better ownership than what was possible before, with one teacher among numerous students, and oldschool print resources. We are slowly realising the unlimited possibilities arising by giving learners the ownership of education, which

is going to define their lives, and not institutions. DIY in Schools: After finding its place in various fields of life, the DIY concept has now entered into a social institution that has been one of the most locked-done institutions in existence – education. Educators, parents, technologists, students, and everyone involved have realised the need for the reinvention of the education system. Thus, they have started looking at the components, subassemblies, assemblies and specifications of DIY education tools to discover ways for improving, reimagining, and reinventing learning at every level, right from school to higher-educational institutes. Multiplicities of sources – from neuroscience to gaming – are inspiring schools to knock down the barriers of learning that bother young minds. They are exploring every possible aspect of the components of teaching and learning, to find suitable ways of re-creating them as more efficient, effective and, critically more modular com-

ponents, which would be accepted by and work with every child in one or the other way.

Janvi N. Jagwani has been a Professional makeup artist for over 12 years now with international certifications from Dubai and Germany. With the wedding season around the corner, Naressa Coutinho finds out why Janvi loves decking up her brides even today.

All Made Up

How would you describe the field of bridal makeup? The gamut of bridal makeup is much wider than we think, as it not only includes the bride but also her family. Today, everyone wants to look good, irrespective of their age. In India, weddings hold a special place in our culture and every girl dreams about having the best wedding. She wants to look her best as everyone wants an eyeful of her on the day. So, she starts hunting for the best dress, jewellry and for people who will be responsible for making her look her best. Brides-to-be begin their search for makeup artists at least four months in advance. Bridal makeup includes total grooming on the wedding day including her makeup, hairstyle and a nail spa. We make sure her jewellry sits well with her attire and most importantly, we try to create what the bride has only imagined in her mind’s eye, which becomes the most challenging aspect for a makeup artist.

have a genuine passion and eye for creativity. When I returned to Mumbai, I noticed that many people learnt the art of applying makeup for the sake of earning, whether as a part of a salon or simply as a side job. If one is really interested, he/she should take up a course at a good institute. Speaking from personal experience, for the first two years, I often struggled to please my brides, but with practice and time in the industry, you get recognised, guaranteeing a continuous flow of clients through recommendations. Hence, good training will reflect in your work even if you are just starting off. It is also the quality of learning which is important.

Would it be advisable to restrict yourself to professional bridal makeup or should one also look at better prospects in the salon and spa industry? I wouldn’t advise youngsters to restrict themselves. In fact, today’s generation is so intelligent and passion-driven that it would simply be a waste to specialise only How did you come to take up a career as in one thing. must network well because it is usually through word-of-mouth that you get work.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of being a bridal makeup artist? You are entrusted with the job of making someone look beautiful, and it requires you to experiment with your creativity. It is therefore nothing like a 9-5 desk job. This in itself earns the job the brownie points. There is a huge demand for makeup artists in the TV and film industry, which makes it an exciting career choice. However, on the other hand, it can get physically exhausting to work in the salon industry. Globally, makeup artists are held in high regard but in India it is sad to note that they are not treated with great respect which can be depressing. There is also continuous competition which makes it difficult to make your mark in the field.

What is your message to youngsters who want to pursue a career in this field? Look for good institutes to learn the art. Keep practicing and try to keep abreast with what’s trending. People like to follow changing trends and being aware of the latest in beauty, will give you an edge over the others. Be careful of your choice of cosmetic products and never compromise on quality. With Diwali and Christmas just around the corner, we ask youngsters how they feel the holidays should be really spent. We got answers ranging from getting a job, spending time with family, indulging in hobbies and sports or taking a long vacation. What do you think? I personally have two priorities for my holidays. First, I am focusing on finding a job or an internship with some kind of renumeration in order to earn money for the rest of the year and gain some practical experience. Secondly, as I am studying far from my family I will also go back to my home town to enjoy and spend time with them. I miss my family a lot and the best way for me to utilize my holidays is to go back home and be with my family. —Maxime Catteau, DSK Campus, ISD, Pune

During the entire year, students work hard. They do not have the time to indulge in their hobbies or play sports. So what I would do in holidays is to play sports and go on a vacation or anything that would be different from working to make full use of my free time. I feel this is absolutely essential so that youngsters can destress and pursue interests which they are unable to through the course of the year. —Amogh Shinde, Marketing

I think students should do an internship to get experience instead of working or join diploma courses. Of course they can also rest or go on vacation but it is not compulsory as they can also stay at their place and enjoy. This is a personal decision and differs from person to person. As long as the free time is utilized well it is fine. —Mahjabeen Shaikh, University of Mumbai

Surrealist concepts by Gopikrishna at Art Musings

G

OPIKRISHNA is a good story teller. We find in his universe, interesting characters and creatures – each conveying their own wise perspectives. His paintings resemble pages of a book of fairy tales. His concept is mostly surrealistic. This style evidently help him to depict with contrasting colours light and darkness, the ordinary and the extraordinary. Gopikrishna: “The body of paintings done from 2011-13 represent what has been glimpsed, experienced, memorised and realised

To be near the easel and always at the painting was the only shelter I had with the secretive existence perceived from the principles of life. They speak about the inner man – untouched by the war of the outer world. They reveal a state of timelessness and unaffected by the bangs of the time bound. They seek out the spiritual fibres deeply hidden in the struggle of the forms”. The exhibition is at Art Musings. Contact: 22163339.

Downgrade to “SELL”: ACC’s volume growth would continue to remain flat/ low single digit due to lack of any new capacity addition in near term. Further, operating costs would remain high driven by the rising input costs. While we factor in improvement in NSR over the next two quarters driven by the recent price hikes and by improvement in demand during the peak construction period (Jan-Apr), we expect its CY12-14E EBITDA & PAT CAGR to decline by 3% each. We have cut our EBITDA estimates for CY13E/ CY14E by 6% and 11% each as we lower our NSR estimates and raise input cost estimates. We downgrade the stock to “SELL” from “HOLD” with a target price of Rs1,080 per share (earlier Rs1,215) valuing it at 8.5x CY14E EBITDA.

The central bank also rolled back an emergency measure put in place to support the slumping rupee. The banks’ cash reserve ratio (CRR) was held at 4 %. Marginal standing facility (MSF) rate is reduced by 25bps from 9.0% to 8.75%.The reverse repo rate stands adjusted to 6.75 %. Also, the central bank reduced the growth forecast for the current fiscal to 5 % from 5.5 % projected earlier. Economic growth fell to a decade-low of 5 % in the previous financial year. “The policy stance and measures are intended to curb mounting inflationary pressures and manage inflation expectations in a situation of weak growth, said Raghuram Rajan, RBI Governor. “These will help strengthen the environment for growth by fostering macroeconomic and financial stability. The Reserve Bank will closely monitor inflation risk while being mindful of the evolving growth dynamics, he said. The RBI left other rates unchanged, such as the mandatory holdings in government securities and other liquid assets as a solvency measure (SLR) at 23 %. However, the Governor doubled the borrowing limit of banks against their cash positions or the Net Demand & Time Liability (NDTL) to 0.5 % for both 7-day and 14-day

repos, with immediate to increase liquidity in the system.

he increase in policy interest rate by the RBI will make corporate and consumer loans more expensive believe experts. “The increase may result in further increasing the cost of funds for any industry or end consumers. Further dampening demand and industrial production, feels Pankaj Bansal, Director of M3M India. “Demand for affordable and mid-end real estate projects may be adversely impacted due to a possible hike or adjustment in home loan rates, he said. Sunil Mantri, President Naredco & CMD Mantri Realty too feels that it will impact the already sluggish real estate market adversely. “The announcement has come at a time when most real estate developers were expecting the demand to pick up during this festival season. This will not only increase the cost of funding but at the same time will give rise to the home loan interest rates, adding an additional burden on home

BUSINESS BRIEFS RBI Closes Special Window For Mutual Funds

With the improvement in liquidity conditions, Reserve Bank yesterday decided to close the special window for commercial banks to meet the cash requirements of mutual funds (MFs) with immediate effect. RBI, in July, had opened a special borrowing window of Rs 25,000 crore to help the crisisridden mutual funds tide over liquidity problems.

India’s under-performers need to fire in do-or-die contest By S S Ramaswamy

N

AGPUR: Handicapped by the poor form of some of their key bowlers, India will be under intense pressure as they go into the do-or-die sixth cricket one-dayer against an upbeat Australia here today, fully aware that any slip-up at this stage could cost them the series. The visitors are sitting pretty with a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven series after the successive washouts of the fourth and fifth games of the long series at Ranchi and Cuttack on October 23 and 26. The onus is on India, whose underperforming players, need to pull up their socks and fire in unison to upset the apple cart of the Australians who came here with the record of winning two seven-game series in the past. The hosts have no option but to win the remaing two matches to clinch the series and any lapses in tomorrow's game could turn out to be disastrous for the team. "From our point of view this is the game we want to win. We don't want to save it for the last game on Sunday (at Bangalore). We want to wrap up with this game. Obviously from their (India's) point of view they need to win to stay alive and from that point pretty crucial for them," said Australian left arm spinner Xavier Doherty in the runup to the crucial match at the stadium. Among the batsmen, Virat Kohli and Mahendra Singh Dhoni are the top-scorers for the hosts, with

URICH: Lionel Messi, Franck Ribery, Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Neymar are among 23 candidates on the short list for the Ballon d'Or announced by FIFA. IN BRIEF Bhullar seeks rise in world rankings at WGC-HSBC Champions

SHANGHAI: Rising Indian golfer Gaganjeet Bhullar is hoping to improve his world rankings with a good finish on the leaderboard this weekend when he tees up for his third appearance at the WGC-HSBC Champions which begins on Thursday. Bhullar is currently ranked 185 in the world and is eyeing a huge leap up the rankings with a solid performance at the year's final World Golf Championship. "This week is really going to be important one for my world ranking. Last week in Malaysia was good but I felt I could have done better. These are the opportunities which we get through the Asian Tour and I would really love to make my mark," said Bhullar.

De Villiers eyes winning ODI start against Pakistan Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Suresh Raina during a practice session in Nagpur on Tuesday ahead of the sixth ODI cricket match against Australia. the former consistently brilliant and the captain playing that superb innings at Mohali to help the team recover and post a challenging 300-plus total that was chased successfully by the visitors. Openers Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma produced top drawer batting in the second ODI at Jaipur with excellent knocks of 95 and 141 not out that helped India chase a huge target of 360 with plenty to spare. India would be looking forward to this left-right combination to provide a very good start again at the VCA ground where 300 or more scores have been put up on four occasions in the past.

Messi, Ribery head Ballon d’Or nominees

Z

29

Ballon d'Or awards in voting by coaches, team captains and media, was injured late in the season and could not prevent Barcelona from being beaten by Bayern in the Champions League semifinals. Neymar joined Messi at Barcelona this season after a move from Santos in his native Brazil, while Welshman Bale moved to Real Madrid from Tottenham in September for 100 million euros, the richest transfer in football history. Another nominee was Liverpool forward Luis Suarez, who missed the start of the 2013-14 Premier League season while serving a 10-game suspension for biting Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic during a Premier League game in April. The Ballon d'Or, or world player of the year, winner will be announced Jan. 13 in Zurich. Two now-retired managers -- Alex Ferguson of Manchester United and Bayern's Jupp Heynckes -- are among 10 nominees for FIFA's coach of the year award.

The worry for India is the middle order given the way Suresh Raina and Yuvraj Singh struggled against the pace and bounce extracted by Mitchell Johnson in Mohali. The 31-year-old Queenslander produced a scintillating show in the last game that was not washed out in the series and he will come hard at these two batsmen again in the all-lefties' battle. The wicket at the Jamtha stadium may not be as conducive for Johnson's type of bowling, but he and the other speedsters have certainly exposed some chinks with their short-ball attack in the Indian batting line up. Raina and Yuvraj

many not have done much in the series so far but are capable of coming up with a scintillating show at some stage of the competition and the hosts would welcome such a display in this do-or-die game. Doherty expected some turn from the wicket after the run-fest in this series of tall scores. "I expected some spinning wickets as we got in the Test series here (earlier this year). Probably the last game it rained (in Ranchi) or it might have been spinning a bit. Looks like this wicket will spin a bit and spinners will play a bit more of a role," he said ahead of the clash.

We are under no pressure: Ashwin N

AGPUR: It may be a do-ordie encounter for India but off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin insisted that the home team was under no added pressure despite trailing Australia 1-2 ahead of the sixth and penultimate game of the ODI cricket series here today. "There is no pressure as such we are just going out and enjoying ourselves. This game is going to be crucial, so we just want to enjoy ourselves and see where we can take it. It has been a good and tight series so far," said Ashwin ahead of the game at the VCA Stadium in Jamtha. India lost the first and third ODIs in Pune and Mohali, chased a huge score of 359 successfully

in the second game at Jaipur, before the fourth and fifth matches in Ranchi and Cuttack respectively were washed out. The Indian bowling attack has been regularly carted around by the Australian batsmen, with captain George Bailey and opener Aaron Finch in an especially punishing mood. Ashwin, who too has been a disappointment so far, said every bowler has been trying to improve. "We are constantly looking to improve as such. There are always areas that you can work on, constantly looking to improve on. I have been trying to work on bowling more and more because that's the only way that you can get better," said the Chennai off-spinner.

SHARJAH: South African captain AB de Villiers vowed to attack Pakistan for a winning start at the opening one-day match here today despite his team being down two key playmakers. The Proteas are missing both star batsman Hashim Amla and spearhead Dale Steyn for the first two matches of the five match one-day series. But De Villiers insists his team is brimming with confidence, especially after they managed to square the Test series 1-1, winning the second showdown in Dubai by an innings and 92 runs. "We didn't have much time for preparation so its really up for us mentally to get prepared but it's important to have a good start, get used to the conditions and adapt as quickly as possible and attack them in areas where they are not strong," said De Villiers.

NIIT launches website for Anand ahead of World Championship

K

OLKATA: West Indies' destructive opener Chris Gayle said while he wished a great farewell for legendary batsman Sachin Tendulkar, his side will be out there to "spoil the fun and parade" when they take on India in the Two-Test series next month. "Sachin's a legend and we wish him a great farewell and we want him to walk away happily, but not victorious," said Gayle. "That Test in Mumbai (Sachin's 200th Test) will be fantastic. The atmosphere will be great as they always have been a lively crowd. Indian crowd always come out to support cricket and with Sachin, it's going to be even bigger. The West Indies will put on a good show but we're eyeing the series so we may be spoiling the fun and parade," Gayle told 'Cricinfo'. West Indies will play two Tests and three ODIs during their tour of India, commencing in Kolkata with first Test from November 610. The second Test — Tendulkar's farewell match — will be played in Mumbai from November 14-18. Gayle noted that the series against India will finally settle the question on where the West Indies stand in Tests. West Indies are currently ranked sixth among

Test-playing nations and Gayle said his team would be more than keen to move up the ICC rankings. "The big occasion for West Indies is a chance to gain points to move to No. 5 on the ICC rankings. That's our mission. I personally have never made a hundred versus India, so I will be looking to rectify that, given my

6-3 in his first round match. Earlier, Yuki had lost in the doubles first round with American partner Mitchell Krueger. They lost 4-6 4-6 to local pair of Maverick Banes and Gavin Van Peperzeel. Meanwhile, in the Eckental Challenger tournament in Germany, top seeded Indian pair of Divij Sharan and Purav Raja made a shock first round exit. The Indians lost a hard-fought first round match 7-5 5-7 3-10 to local wild cards Robin Kern and Maximillan Marterer in one hour and 24 minutes. In the Charlottesville event in the USA, both Somdev Devvarman and Saketh Myneni will open their campaigns today.

IPL experience also. But you can't discount their talent in players like Sachin (Tendulkar), MS Dhoni and so many more. A few of us are familiar with venues like Kolkata and Mumbai, which host the Tests, and these conditions and pitches usually stay the same," said the Jamaican. The Windies have not played a Test match for almost a year now and the team trained hard at a fitness and medical camp in Bridgetown before coming here to ensure players stay fit as they will be on the road for a long time. Gayle said a good show in the series could well be the turning point in his career, considering India are a formidable

opponents to beat at home. "We want to start the first Test with a bang and we know what's required to win in India. I hope this series will be a turning point in my career as I get back to the redball as opposed to the short-format white ball. India are looking to consolidate their Test spot (3rd position) in the rankings so it will be a very engaging contest," he said. "I'm really looking forward to the Tests because I haven't played one in a while. It's always tough in India, no matter the format, and this is crucial to test ourselves against top-five opposition. It will be difficult to beat India at home for sure," Gayle signed off.

Advani, Aditya lose in Intl C’ship C

HENGDU, CHINA: It was a disappointing end to India's campaign in the International Championship as the two poster boys of Indian cue sport -- Pankaj Advani and Aditya Mehta -- bowed out of the major ranking snooker event, losing their respective first round matches here. Indian Open finalist, Aditya went down 3-6 to England's Rod Lawler, who top scored with 103, while eight-time world champion Advani suffered from food poisoning just minutes before his

opening game against Englishman Dave Harold, who defeated the 27-year-old cueist 6-4 in the USD 9,50,000 event. "Once your health is under attack, it's not much one can do. Given my condition, I am pleased with my performance," Advani told PTI. "It was unfortunate to suffer the way I did during the match. I look forward to recovering and preparing for the next long stint in England over November and December," he added. Despite suffering from an upset stomach, which Advani developed as he was walking out to the table to play his match, the Bangalore-based cueist came up with multiple breaks and took the fight into the opponent's camp.

Let Arjun Tendulkar enjoy his cricket: Rohan Gavaskar L

AHLI, HARYANA: Well aware of the burden of expectations that comes with a legendary surname, former India player Rohan Gavaskar is miffed at the way the cricket fraternity is following each and every move of Sachin Tendulkar's 14-year-old son, Arjun. Clearly not in a mood to discuss the progress made by the junior Tendulkar in school level cricket, Rohan said the kid should be left alone and allowed to "enjoy" his cricket. "This is something I do not wish to discuss. I don't want to talk about it," Rohan said at first. Prodded a bit and the son of

the legendary Sunil Gavaskar said, "The kid should be left alone, let him enjoy his cricket. I have spoken to Sachin, I have spoken to Anjali (Tendulkar) about it. This is not fair on them." While his father is considered to be one of India's finest ever batsman, the 37-year-old Rohan couldn't really reach those dizzy heights during a cricket career spanning over a decade and a half. Rohan played in 11 Oneday internationals, with 54 being his best. With 6938 runs and 18 centuries in 117 matches, his first-class record stands a lot better. He had also captained Ben-

gal for two seasons. Gavaskar had retired from first-class cricket last year. Now a cricket commentator, Rohan shared the box with his father during the current ODI series against Australia, against whom he made his One-day debut in January 2004. Knowing well that constant comparison could be a problem, Rohan doesn't want Arjun to be weighed on the same scale as his legendary father when he grows up. Arjun, who bats left-handed, had scored a century in the Mumbai Cricket Association's Under-14 selection trials in May last year.

Tendulkar on 55 not out, keeps Mumbai chances alive with 39 runs to his season opener

By Abhishek Hore

L

AHLI, HARYANA: Sachin Tendulkar warmed up for his farewell series against the West Indies next month with a gritty unbeaten half-century to keep Mumbai's chances alive in their Ranji Trophy match against a spirited Haryana here. Featuring in his last Ranji Trophy innings, Tendulkar played the lone-ranger as he remained not out on a patient 55 at stumps on the third day, with Mumbai, set a target of 240, needing another 39 runs to win with four wickets in hand. The 40-time defending champions were 201 for six at close of day, with Dhawal Kulkarni giving Tendulkar company on six. Resuming at 224 for nine, Haryana were all bowled out for 241 earlier in the day. After that Tendulkar held centrestage by showing signs of regaining his form, much to the delight of the packed crowd who had been awaiting his arrival at the crease with bated breath. The champion batsman, who will walk into sunset after playing his landmark 200th Test against the West Indies next month, decorated his innings with four hits to the fence while facing 122 balls. One shot that brought back the days of yore was the cracker of a cover drive Tendulkar produced off pacer Ashish Hooda, attracting huge cheers from the packed crowd. Chants of 'Sachin, Sachin' were heard almost all day long and he obliged his fans in this sleepy village by recording his 115th first-class fifty. Tendulkar, who was dismissed for five in the first innings, got to his 50 when he flicked Joginder Sharma for two through the vacant square leg region, bringing

the crowd to its feet. The 40-yearold Tendulkar was concentration personified as he looked to bail Mumbai out of a difficult situation by bringing into play all his experience. He was far from being his aggressive best, but on this tricky track at the Chaudhary Bansi Lal Stadium, patience was the order of the day and Tendulkar showed that in abundance. In the morning, Mumbai took less than three overs to dismiss Harshal Patel and bring to an end Haryana's second innings. Before holing out to Dhawal Kulkarni off his own bowling, Patel had smashed his way to 33 invaluable runs that helped in swelling the hosts' lead. Patel had started from where he had left off yesterday evening, hitting a Kulkarni delivery straight over his head and into the sightscreen for a maximum. The six was followed by a four but while going one for one too many, he got out in the next ball. But the bowler, by then, had done more than his share with the willow. Mumbai's chase started on a disastrous note as they lost Ranji Trophy's most prolific scorer, Wasim Jaffer, in the second over as he played away from his body to edge an outswinger to wicketkeeper Nitin Saini. An 86-run partnership ensued for the second wicket between Ajinkya Rahane and Kaustabh Pawar. Mumbai's top-scorer in the first innings, Rahane contributed 40 this time around, and his knock included four hits to fence before he was shown the door by off-spinner Jayant Yadav who bowled the batsman with a ball that did not turn ass much as his previous delivery. Rahane's departure, with Mumbai at 87 for two, once again brought the packed crowd to its feet as it signalled the arrival of Tendulkar into the crease. Around 6000 spectators had since morning trooped into the Chaudhary Bansi Lal Stadium, hoping to see their favourite cricketer produce a special knock. Brief Scores: Haryana 134 & 241 lead Mumbai 136 & 201/6 in 75.0 overs [Kaustubh Pawar 47, Ajinkya Rahane 40, Sachin Tendulkar 55 batting] 39 runs.

This mason has Sachin’s 327 Test We want to win match as farewell gift to Sachin: Mumbai opener innings and ODI tons on tips

L

AHLI, HARYANA: He has not quite mastered the skill of construction but a 32-year-old mason from a hamlet in Sikhar district of Rajasthan seems to be a 'PHD' in the country's most loved subject -- Sachin Tendulkar -- having memorised each and every Test innings and ODI centuries of the retiring icon. Meet Ajeet Singh Tanwar, a one-of-a-kind Tendulkar fan, who, quite astonishingly, remembers how many the retiring cricketer has scored, where and in which match over his past 198 Tests, besides storing in his 'memory card' the details of the 49 hundreds the veteran had smashed in his 463

ODI appearances. "You ask me and I will tell you how much he has scored in all the Test matches he has played or when did he score his 10th or 23rd ODI century," said Tanwar, who has been closely following the cricketer's feats since the age of 16. The doubts over whether he was boasting were put to rest with a simple google search on Tendulkar's stats. Asked when did the most complete batsman of modern era score his fourth ODI century and the answer from his complete fan was 112 against Sri Lanka at Sharjah in 1995. A quick glance through stats was enough to clear all doubts.

L

AHLI, HARYANA: As emotions continue to run high in Mumbai camp with Sachin Tendulkar playing in his final Ranji Trophy game, opener Kaustubh Pawar said the players were trying to focus on winning the match against Haryana as a farewell gift to him. "Emotions are there but he is trying to neglect it so as to focus in the game (against Haryana) ... The rest of the teammates are also trying to do that. He does not want that to affect his game. The whole team wants to gift him a win," Pawar told reporters. Chasing 240 for victory, Mumbai need another 39 runs on the final day today to force a win, with Tendulkar remaining unbeaten on 55. Asked about the match situation, Pawar said los-

ing two wickets late into the final session of play have brought Haryana back into the game. "We are not on the backfoot but we lost two wickets and that brought them into the game. The team that plays better will win the match. It's a good pitch for fast bowlers," he said. Asked how he felt while batting with Tendulkar, he said, "It's a dream to bat with him, it's the second time, the first was in the quarterfinal against Baroda at the Wankhede last season. He gives us useful tips." Haryana all-rounder Mohit Sharma felt the match was slightly tilted in his side's favour. "I think it is 60 per cent on our side. Morning session will be the key. We will have to bowl to a good line and length," he said.

Saurashtra spinners sparkle against Rajasthan

At the close of play today, Rajasthan were struggling at 147 for four in their second innings, still needing 192 runs with six wickets remaining.
