A

man who flew down from Malaysia to kill his mentally challenged sister's abuser has been arrested. On Wednesday, Izhar Khan, who was accompanied by his niece Saba and nephew Nasir, fired four shots at Ramchandra Pal, who had been allegedly sexually abusing the victim for several years.

Pal (35), who is a driver with the Shiv Sena’s consumer redressal forum, received two bullets on his chest, one on his finger, while one shot misfired. He is recuperating at the KEM Hospital and is out of danger, said police officials.

he Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Heritage Committee is on the verge of considering redesigning the vicinity around the CST, which will include the first big subway of its kind and the road divider in order to give it a heritage look. The subway, opened to the public in September 1999 after which the BMC allotted spaces for shops, has improper ventilation and is hence a breeding ground for illnesses like skin infections and respiratory disorders.

The tinted polycarbonate funnels made up of contemporary material structure give the structure a Gothic look and were built at a cost of Rs.15 crore over a 2,870 sq metre area.

An initiative for redesigning the subway had been taken up in the year 2001 by an architect, Ratan B. Bhalwankar. He said, “A proposal was then sent to the BMC commissioner, which was not passed and on December 21, 2013 the proposal was again sent to the commissioner. A meeting will be soon be held to begin the work.”

Chief engineer (Bridges) S.O. Kori told the ADC, “The designs have been studied thoroughly by our department and the structures that are sketched are authentic; they will give a new heritage look similar to the four entrances and exit points of the

On December 5, the ADC had reported that a team of MU senators had visited JBIMS to meet the institute’s director regarding a particular issue. On their visit, the senators inspected the canteen and were shocked to see the low levels of

Working towards a leprosy-free city The state department of health services, after its recent survey on leprosy cases in the city, has intensified its operations to find out hidden cases and provide them with the right treatment

fter its recent survey, the state department of health services has marked certain spots in the city as high endemic and low endemic areas with regard to the rate of detection of new cases of leprosy.

The survey which was conducted in 2013 says that areas like Pila Bunglow in A-ward, Anand Nagar in K west ward, Kurar in P North, Bail Bazaar in L-ward, Bhandar Wadi in K west ward and Baingan Wadi in M east have such rates of detection of new cases of leprosy that make them fall into the category of high

endemic areas while areas near the health posts at wards S, D North, P South, R Central and R South have reported no cases as yet and have thus been categorised as low endemic areas.

“Cases of leprosy are coming down. We hardly get one patient in our Out Patient Department. In 2011, from April to December, there were 743 cases of leprosy. In 2012, there were 793 cases during the same time period. In 2013, from April to December, there have been 459 cases of leprosy”, said Dr. Amita Pednekar, Medical Superintendent of Acworth Leprosy Hospital at Wadala.

Dr. Hemant Joshi, Assistant Director, Health Services, Mumbai said, “We did a door-to-door survey and found out cases which might have otherwise gone undetected or unreported. We prepare a monthly list of cases of leprosy and it was on the basis of that list that we have identified these spots as high endemic and low endemic”.

Over certain areas having a higher rate of new case detection for leprosy, Dr. Shubhangi Borulkar from the Supervisory Urban Leprosy Unit said, “These areas are overcrowded.

They are low on hygiene and sanitation. Conditions like these are conducive for an increase in cases of

leprosy”.

Also, starting from today (January 31) a survey of the low endemic areas will be undertaken in the city to make sure that no cases of leprosy have been missed out and that the areas are actually low endemic.

“Twenty teams, of two people each, have been formed and each team will visit at least 130 houses to make sure that there are no hidden or undetected cases of leprosy. If they happen to find any case, the person will be refereed to the right place for treatment. Early diagnosis and treatment can help cure leprosy faster”, said Dr. Joshi.

This survey will go on for ten days.

he country's first monorail between Wadala and Chembur will be thrown open for the public on February 2. Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar will formally inaugurate the 8.93 km stretch at Mahatma Gandhi Maidan in Chembur on the afternoon of February 1. Initially for a month the monorail will operate between 7 am to 3 pm, after which it will begin to operate in the morning and evening rush hours and will later operate for 19 hours a day. The ticket rates for the first phase range between Rs.5 to Rs.11. The second phase of the project between Chembur to Jacob Circle will be completed in a year.

Speaking to newspersons at Wadala Depot Mono station, Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) metropolitan commissioner U.P.S. Madan disclosed

that the MMRDA has received the rail safety clearance certificate from the commissioner of railway safety. Gauging the initial response, the frequency of operations will be brought down from 15-minute to 9-minute and later to 3-minute intervals. Besides, two more coaches will be added later. The total cost of the entire project is Rs.3,000 crore. Once fully operational, the authority expects 20,000 passenger footfalls per hour.

At present, the four coach rakes

have a carrying capacity of 560 passengers.

n a shocking incident, two employees attached to the natural gas distribution company – Bharat Gas – have been arrested by the MIDC police for allegedly raping and robbing a newly-wed woman at her residence in Andheri (E).

The accused – identified as Mohammad Shaikh and Chandan Jaiswar – were known to the victim as they had delivered gas cylinders to

her home twice before.

On Tuesday afternoon, Shaikh and Jaiswar turned up at the victim’s apartment, under the pretext of having found some fault in the gas regulator, the last time they checked. Since she knew them, the victim allowed them into the house, after which Shaikh went into the kitchen, while Jaiswar stayed outside.

The lone occupant, identified as Ritesh Rajaram Rathod (31), was frisked following which the police team found a country-made revolver in his possession. Teachers to boycott HSC oral and practical exams

tudents studying in Standard XII and all set for their Higher School Certificate (HSC) Board oral and practical exams from Monday, February 3, are in for troubled times. After the state government failed to work upon addressing their demands, 60,000 teachers from across Maharastra have decided to boycott the exams. They are saying that the state government will be responsible for the loss of careers of the students.

Yesterday, the Maharastra Federation of Junior College Teachers Organization held a meeting in Mumbai to discuss upon action to be taken because of the delay on the part of the state government in meeting their demands. The organization contended that it has been waiting more than a year, but the government had yet to act upon the demands. They

later announced the boycott.

The teachers are complaining that several important demands, such as the payment as per Fifth Pay Commission approved scales be provided from 1996 onwards.

Last year, in 2013, as the state board had fixed in a tight exam schedule for the HSC students, without a study gap in between the exams, the teachers had boycotted the written board exams across Maharashtra. The state board then released another exam time-table providing study leave time between the exams, after which the teachers called off their strike.

The ADC spoke to Anil Deshmukh, Secretary, Maharashtra Federation of Junior College Teachers Organization, who said, "We have waited enough, and the government is just side-tracking our demands. We have finally decided to boycott the exams and the state government will be responsible for the students' loss!"

On the basis of the complaint, the MIDC police

formed a team and reached the Bharat Gas agency in Andheri and took down both their numbers and addresses, on the basis of which they arrested the duo from their residences in Andheri.

Senior Police Inspector, Suresh Hujband, from MIDC police station said, “Both the accused have been booked

under various sections of the IPC including rape and robbery.

They were produced before the court and remanded to Police Custody till February 6.

In their confession, they revealed that they were aware about the woman living alone, and took advantage of her situation.”

The Bombay High Court on Thursday suggested the General Insurance Council (GIC) to come up with predeclared insurance package rates for different ailments.

Achievements of AAP: Most unimpressive T

HE list of achievements of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Delhi does not seem to be very impressive. It is a fact that the AAP has been in office only for a month and within this short period it could not implement all the promises it had made before the elections. A beginning, however, has not been made with regard to vital projects which would help survival of people.

AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal told the press yesterday that he has ended VIP culture in Delhi. Ended 'Lal Batti' scenario, advised people to carry out sting operations, started preparing for the Jan Lokpal Bill. Can these be called achievements? How do they affect the life of people.

One or two sting operations carried out does not end corruption by bureaucrats. Corruption is as rampant as ever in Delhi. If he continues in office – if the Congress lets him – it is possible corruption to some extent may go. Yesterday at the press conference he claimed that corruption in Delhi has been considerably reduced. This is nothing but a tall claim.

Chances are the AAP will be out of office soon. A Congress MLA – Arif Mohammad – disrupted the press conference. He called Arvind Kejriwal a liar: He said that one of the promises of Kejriwal was that he would take up the Batla encounter case, but he has done nothing about it.

Arif declared he would stop support to AAP. What the Congress member did was something which the Delhi Congress perhaps wanted him to do. If one member of the Congress leaves the party, the 27 member of AAP will collapse. The Congress party is worried that the chief minister of Delhi will ask for and get SIT probe into the 1984 riots. His demand will carry weight because it has been made by the Delhi CM. Rahul Gandhi has admitted the Congress' involvement in the 1984 riots. Is it possible that the Congress wants to stop action by the AAP with regard to the demand for a SIT probe?

OTH are in their mid 40s; both inherit their political clout, power and charisma of their respective families; both have tremendous political ambitions; both try to display their sway over the partyfold; both shoot their mouth in public; both are denounced to be anarchists; Of them, one is angling to take over the position and power of prime minister, while the other wants to become chief minister of Maharashtra; both keep talking about changing the 'system' but none spells out what that term means to them and both are media darlings, thus grab headlines for their every act and utterances.

The similarities between Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray end there.

While Rahul believes in arm-chair politics, where he runs the party through his lieutenants, Raj exercises his power through instigating his followers in indulging in violence. But the none the less, receiving positive response from the middle and lowermiddle class people, particularly Marathi-speaking population of Maharashtra. Early this week, both Rahul and Raj created flutter in the society. Rahul gave his first ever television interview to an English news channel, while Raj engineered attacks on many toll plazas on the state highways to press his demand for abolition of toll imposed by the state government.

Rahul flunked interview Now that election fever has started gripping the political arena of the nation, many such interviews and agitations are naturally expected. However, what surprised many was that Rahul, while talking to Arnab Goswami tried to duck all questions and in the process made a joke of him. On the other hand, Raj, perhaps, in his bid to grab headlines and instant publicity, went overboard and his followers, mostly unemployed youth of urban and semi-urban areas, went on rampage ransacking toll plaza booths and beating employees operating the booths. This act does not seem to have gone well with his sympathisers also as though most of the people want that toll system to go away, they are not for violence and holding of traffic for hours, only because of a handful people were busy in the 'show of strength'. Thankfully, chief minister of Maharashtra is yet making a straight talk and has so far ruled out any possibility of bowing to the acts of vandalism.

What Rahul put up on Monday night, was a pathetic show performed by an immature and ill-prepared son of a political family.

the party as the prime minister candidate in 2014 elections, Rahul's performance was far from the minimum level of satisfaction.

Though the party has not officially named his as the party nominee for the super executive post, you don't need a political pundit to predict that he would be replacing the sitting prime minister Manmohan Singh, if the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) manages to retain power for the third successive term. In this situation, one expected a much better and assuring performance from Rahul. Alas, what all witness was that the man in the hot-seat was fumbling and avoiding questions, where he could have scored. It was like a batsman allowing a full-toss ball to hit the stumps, which he should have hit to the boundary very easily.

HE Sufi, like a student of music, trains both his voice and ear in the harmony of life. The training of the voice consists in being conscientious about each word spoken, about its tone, rhythm, meaning and the appropriateness for the occasion. For instance the words of consolation should be spoken in a slow rhythm, with a soft voice and sympathetic tone. When speaking words of command a lively rhythm is necessary, and a powerful and distinct voice. The Sufi avoids all unrhythmic actions; he keeps the rhythm of his speech under the control of patience, not speaking a word before the right time, not giving an answer until the question is finished. He considers a contradictory word a discord unless spoken in a debate, and even at such times he tries to resolve it into a consonant chord. A contradictory tendency in man finally develops into a passion, until he contradicts even his own idea if it be propounded by another.

In order to keep harmony, the Sufi even modulates his speech from one key to another, in other words, he falls in with another person’s idea by looking at the subject from the speaker’s point of view instead of his own.

Its true that he has been demanding abolition of toll system. Such slogans always receive instant mass applause as none wants to think twice before throwing a stone on a public property. His argument is that if the toll is collected to meet the expenses of road construction, why give contracts to the outsourced toll collection agencies for 20 years?

As per his estimations, the construction cost is recovered in two- to three years. Up to this level, his argument holds ground, but what next? Is it enough to construct roads? What about meeting the expenses of their major and minor repairs, expansions and maintenance? Who would bear that cost? If the users of the roads do not pay for these tasks, the government will have to spend it from its exchequer. It means the tax collected from people at large would be used for highway construction and maintenance.

Should the money go from the pockets of the poor people who do not use the highways?

Why this agitation, that was launched a couple of years ago, remained in a cold storage so far and was revived now when the elections are round the corner? Is it a mere election gimmick? However, these questions are never raised and no one tries to seek the answers.

This is the story of two young politicians, who are now in the fray with a slogan and intention of getting indulged into politics to 'change the system'. As the elections come closer, we would surely find more similar 'fighters' entering the arena to fight the battle of the people. North Mumbai MP, Sanjay Nirupam sat on a hunger strike, threatened to immolate himself to demand reduction in power tariff. He withdrew his agitation. The power tariff remains unchanged.

On the other hand, another politician, in his mid-40s and having no political family background or god-father, Arvind Kejriwal has silently posed a serious threat to the Congress when he decided to probe and audit the electricity generation and distribution outfits and also the governance of his predecessor Sheila Dikshit. He has further sent panic signals to the ruling Congress by demanding further probe into the Sikh massacre in Delhi in 1984.

The difference, thus, matters. matic scale, representing dominance, respect and equality. Similarly he takes arbitrary or contrary motions to suit the time and situation by following step by step, by agreeing and differing, and even by opposing, and yet keeping up the law of harmony in conversation. Take any two persons as two notes; the harmony existing between them forms intervals either consonant or dissonant, perfect or imperfect, major or minor, diminished or augmented as the two persons may be.

The interval of class, creed, caste, race, nation or religion, as well as the interval of age or state of evolution, or of varied and opposite interests show the law here distinctly.

A wise man would be more likely to be in harmony with his foolish servant than with a semi-wise man who considers himself infallible. Again it is equally possible that a wise man may be far from happy in the society of the foolish, and vice versa. The proud man will always quarrel with the proud while he will support the humble. It is also possible for the proud to agree on a common question of pride, such as pride of race or birth.

Bake your own cake This year, learn how to make amazing customised cakes with Aashiyana Shroff, owner of Tart. The pastry shop owner is hosting a demo where she will teach you how to make sugar-free desserts, chocolate truffles and even share her secret recipes and tips with you. And the best part is — you can sample them too!

Hotel Transylvania Dracula, who operates a high-end resort away from the human world, goes into overprotective mode when a young boy discovers the resort and falls for the count's teenage daughter. A light-hearted, well told story makes for good viewing if you plan to pack in a lot of serious talks and short films.

VisuAl ArT With a theme of Moving Images, the visual arts this year are all about shock value, with each one trying to compel you. There will be several artists with installations and exhibitions all over the area, so don’t limit yourself to this one, but don’t forget to check it out!

Junk cycle wish tree We absolutely love the look of this installation, so don’t forget to check it out when you’re there. Made by Sonal Jhadav, the junk cycle wish tree will be on display throughout the festival.

We’re not going to pick just one from this section since it’s a new offering at the festival. The new Urban Design & Architecture section is called Move Mumbai and provides a different perspective on the physical aspects of our city. You are exposed to planners, administrators and architects and you shouldn’t miss out on walking around the entire festival to catch a glimpse.

Theatre this year is Rang Baraat and combines tragedy, comedy, veterans and amateur directors to put on masterpieces that will take your breath away.

Children

Biwi O Biwi Presented by IPTA and with a cast that includes Rakesh Bedi, Sulabha Arya, Avtar Gill, Nivedita Baunthiyal and many more, this play deals with the theme of modern male chauvinism. It traces how modern women stand up to fight against it. The play is significant because it’s intertwined with prevalent values in society and what needs to change for the betterment of women.

Your children won’t be left out this year at the festival. Take a look at what’s in store for them:

A Peasant of El Salvador This QTP presentation is set in the 1980s and tells us about a time when El Salvador was under military dictatorship. The play discusses the cost of human life, explaining how most countries undermine it on the path to economic development. It’s already amassed fans in the city from previous runs, so if you haven’t seen it yet, don’t miss out!

A Journey In Love Ameeta Chatterjee, author and philanthropist will read out poems from her book A Journey in Love for children to draw and paint inspired from the poems. The workshop will be held along with Shilpa Vaidya of Aatman Academy and everyone who has worked on the book’s illustrations.

When February 1, from 1pm to 2:30 pm Where Museum Gardens Ages 6 and above

Nine Hidden Gems Kumkum Somani, author and illustrator will narrate The Blue Eyed Doll from Nine Hidden Gems through audio and visuals. The idea is to acquaint children with Gandhiji’s values through a fun and exciting way.

Part of the session will be discussions, interesting crafts, dramatisation and a little bit of dancing too!

The month-long festival will celebrate the diversity of modern day photography and will showcase collections in

rtists from across India and the world are coming together to pay homage to Ustad Allarakha, known fondly in musical circles as Abbaji. The legendary guru and tabla maestro will be honoured by classical music from global greats. Co-presented

by Taj Mahal Tea, Reliance Foundation, Aditya Birla Management Corporation Ltd. and co-sponsored by Kotak Mahindra AMC Ltd., the event will begin early in the morning with a session that will conclude with a spiritual tribute by Dr. N. Rajam and Zakir Hussain. There will also be an afternoon session, with performances by Sadanand Naimpally (Tabla), Anantha R. Krishnan (Mridangam), Satyajit Talwalkar (Tabla) and the Panchratna Sanai Tafa Mandal (Shehnai, Taasha and Sambal) and an evening session with the Khol Drummers from Kolkatta, the Panchratna Sanai Tafa Mandal from Nagar and Lil John Roberts from the U.S. The grand finale of the evening will be the Jam Session led by Zakir Hussain, featuring several national and International artistes. Zakir Hussain tells us, “Through 14 years, we have had the good fortune of some of the greatest luminaries of Indian music blessing this occasion, representing many musical traditions from across the globe.”

A

s one of the largest repositories of Bengal art of the past two centuries, the Delhi Art Gallery presents its second exhibition, titled Art of Bengal. Curated by Kishore Singh, the exhibition features over two hundred works and is perhaps one of the largest exhibits of the art from Bengal held under one roof in the recent past. It features some early Bengal oils and several similarly themed works by academic school trained individual artists such as B. P. Banerjee. They lead to the work of salon and ‘gentleman-artists,’ produced by the newly-emergent art schools and institutions in Calcutta in late

19th-early 20th century, such as J. P. Gangooly. The school known as Bengal School with its dreamy, romantic imagery is represented in the works of Abanindranath Tagore, Nandalal Bose, Asit Haldar, Kshitindranath Majumdar and D. P. Roy Chowdhury. More modern artists such as Somnath Hore, Prodosh Das Gupta, Chittaprosad, Rabin Mondal, Bikash Bhattacharjee, Jogen Chowdhury, Nikhil Biswas and Bijan Choudhary also find a spot in this comprehensive exhibition.

he McDowell Signature Indian Derby 2014 promises to be an event where sport meets glamour.

f like me, you get terribly excited with the sheer mention of the word ‘bags’, you’re going to go a little berserk when you log on to MyBagsDirect.com. They promise to cater to all your bag related needs and it is a promise they fulfil.

First things first, the layout is basic with turquoise, grey and white keeping things simple yet stylish. The products they sell are categorised well and within each category there are sub-categories listed so that you are only shown the products that you are looking for, without wasting time trying to sift through pages and pages worth of other merchandise. With a store that promotes the idea of home décor that’s literally covered in gold, I was expecting a fancier location. But, don’t judge this book by its cover. Once you enter TGLS, the sheer opulence of the shiny gold and silver home décor items is enough to make you forget the surroundings.

I had heard about TGLS much before they opened their store in Worli. Shezad Khan (the owner of the store) and his technique of gold-leafing have been around for quite some time now and to be honest, I’ve always found the idea of covering chandeliers, beds and even walls in gold, a bit tacky. If you too have similar feelings, then a visit to the TGLS studio is a must as it shows you how wrong you are.

The ground level of the store has knick-knacks such as a bat, ball and stump set and guitars all done

up in gold. In one corner of the store, you’ll notice square sheets of gold, silver and bronze. The store manager explained that these foils are at the base of the process of gold-leafing. These sheets — think of them as leaves — are used to cover items. But, even though they use small square sheets, the final product doesn’t have any visible marks which suggest the use of different sheets. The product may very well have been dipped into a pot of liquid gold!

The other products at TGLS include photo frames, chandeliers, lamps and even a huge bed — all of which are done up in different finishes of gold, ranging from dull to shiny. They also can paint an entire wall in 24carat gold using the same technique.

Now that I’ve told you what you can expect at the store, let me answer the fundamental question — is gold décor something that you should actually consider? The

What we are trying to say is that should you decide to shop from TGLS, you need to think long and hard before you make a purchase.

On the price front, you will need to be prepared to spend anywhere between `2,500 to `3 lakhs.

Overall, I found the concept exciting and the finish brilliant.

loral tablecloths, antique wooden furniture, sepia tone pictures, lace lampshades. It might sound like we’ve walked into an old bungalow that’s tucked in the by-lanes of Bandra, but you’ll find all this and more at Bandra’s Smoke House Deli. While the name might veer on the macho side, the décor is anything but. There are floral patterns everywhere, which would have been overwhelming if it wasn’t for the clean but creative wallpaper (by the talented Busride) that depicts a home setting.

The reason their décor is so different from their other outlets is because they want to represent the area that they are in. But, are the lace and florals a little too much? Not really. In fact, it’s quite a pleasant and entertaining change from the usual brown, beige and white we’re used to seeing. And you’ll never be bored!

During our meal we spied everything from old pictures (real ones donated by people) and an alter to a miniature tea set and cook books.

We started our meal with a Greek Salad (`320), served in a pristine white big bowl. The crumbled feta and fresh ingredients are great but when there are so many other exciting and delicious dishes on offer, you do feel it’s a waste to fill up on it, which it will. But, if you have more willpower than us and can resist the ribs and pasta, kudos to you! We then tried the Peri Peri Rubbed Chicken (`390) — beautifully cooked chicken on skewers with just the right hit of spice. We also ordered the John Dory + Smoked Shimla Chili (`690) and the Honey Orange Glazed Grilled Pork Chops (`690). The fish had a delcious crunchy coating that perfectly

complemented the delicately flavoured fish and the ohso-creamy rice. Seriously, the buttery and subtly flavoured rice is worth every carbohydrate calorie. The pork chops, which come deboned (Yay! No mess!), were tender, and the citrus cuts through the sweetness of the honey to give you a well-rounded flavour. After such a good experience, we had to order the Smoked Chicken + Goats Cheese Tart (`470). Served with a rocket salad, this is a pure sin. It’s rich, creamy and the flaky pastry makes it a real treat. We finished off our decadent meal with an equally decadent Flourless chocolate Cake served with ice-cream (`230).

To accompany the fare, try their cocktails. We recommend the Kiwi, Melon + Jasmine (`430) and the Star Anise + Plum (`430). Well presented with even more flowers, the cocktails are refreshing and different.

But the small straw makes it cumbersome to drink.

Another thing we liked about Smoke House Deli is their soup + ½ sandwich combo which is great for working people in the area who want to grab a quick lunch. They also plan to open at 5am from February onwards, so pop in for their breakfast or to ease your Saturday night hangover. Are you excited to be part of Twist of Taste: Season III? Super duper excited! I think it’s a great form of cooking when you are inspired by classics or simplicity.

What can viewers expect from the show?

There is a lot of travel, exotic dishes and great food heroes. And of course, interesting twists.

Tell us about the Food Makeover segment?

The show is divided into two travel segments where I go out on location and try a new interesting dish and then create a unique twist in my kitchen.

How did you develop a passion for cooking?

I grew up in Amritsar where I learnt to cook in my grandmother's kitchen and at the Golden Temple. I could connect to food at a deeper level and decided to live my whole life with it.

What was your career defining moment?

When I was called by Chef Gordon Ramsay to work with him for Kitchen Nightmares. It was my first time on TV and he was really encouraging.

What’s your favourite to make?

I love making simple daals.

I would cook simple, homemade Indian food.

What’s always in your fridge?

Fruit and yogurt.

Depends what you like. Before choosing what to cook, I would respect her thoughts and beliefs.

Is a way to a woman’s heart through her stomach too?

Yes, of course. We are all human and we refer to food as something that nourishes us and gives us security and comfort. It’s truly the only way to the heart after mutual respect.

Finally, how do you like being a sex symbol considering you’re often called The Hottest Chef of America?

NSE India: CNX Nifty — Daily Market Report for: Friday (January 31, 2014) (Based on the activity of the previous trading day) by Dominic Rebello

REVIEW OF THE PREVIOUS DAY: The Nifty fell substantially on Thursday (January 30, 2014) a net 46.55 points (0.76%) and closed at the 6073 point level. The market opened down with a gap at the 6067 points level. It then declined further and turned into a range bound movement until 2.30 p.m. The index then declined sharply and registered the day’s low at the 6027 points level at 2.49 p.m. It then rose sharply and then registered the day’s high at the 6082 points level at 3.28 p.m. and then turned into a range bound movement until closing at the day. The Nifty declined for the fifth consecutive session, moved in a range of 56 points and closed below the psychologically important 6100 points level, which is also the lowest level since November 2013. Sentiment was bearish and amongst the 50 Nifty stocks 35 were gainers, 14 were losers while 1 remained unchanged. Substantial buying was witnessed in consumer durables, while heavy selling was seen in banking, realty and metal stocks.

Overall Market Strength/Weakness: The indicators and oscillators discussed here are indicating a weak market with a negative bias.

Market Breadth: Overall Market Breadth on the NSE was negative. Amongst all the traded stocks, 352 were gainers, 1086 were losers and 46 remained unchanged.

OUTLOOK FOR TODAY: On Japanese candlestick patterns the index has formed a doji pattern. This indicates indecisiveness amongst investors. The next candle formation will confirm whether the bias is towards the buy or sell side of the market.

However, the index is below its 5, 15 and 25 days moving averages and all the three averages are declining. Further, the velocity parameters too are negatively trended. All these indicate a negative bias and the possibility of a further decline unfolding.

Investors are advised to avoid buying at present levels.

TECHNICAL ANALYSIS: Volume: Volume (Qty shares) increased 35.51%. This change is substantial and indicates a wide participation by investors.

Slow Stochastic Indicator: The Slow Stochastic Oscillator has risen in the over-sold zone. The Slow K line in the Stochastic Oscillator is below the slow D line (negative if it continues).

RSI Indicator: The RSI is above the 30 level but is now declining (negative if it continues).

MACD Indicator: The MACD is below zero and is declining (negative if it continues). It is below its 9-day Average (negative).

Support Levels: For short-term traders the immediate main support is at the 5958 points level. The next support is at the 5877 points level.

Resistance Levels: The immediate main resistance is at the 6372 points level.

The next resistance is at the 6424 points level.

Pivot Point Analysis: For intra-day traders the support and resistance levels are calculated according to the pivot point theory and are: Pivot point = 6061 (This is the level where the trend is likely to change during intra-day).

Support (1) = 6040.

Support (2) = 6006.

Resistance (1) = 6095.

Resistance (2) = 6117.

The gradually recovering US economy has threatened to taper its quantitative easing programme thereby causing flow of foreign capital from emerging markets to the US”, said Deepa Aggarwal, Head ,Corporates and Insurance Companies Business Development, National Stock Exchange of India during a seminar on “Currency Hedging and SME Listing at the Exchange” organized by All India Association of Industries, MVIRDC World Trade Centre Mumbai in association with National Stock Exchange of India Limited.

Enumerating on the consequences of the outflow of foreign capital from India Aggarwal said that the Rupee rapidly depreciated following announcements by the Fed to taper quantitative easing.

However, it was the formal currency markets that were blamed for generating volatility in the Rupee.

Aggarwal clarified that currency markets merely offer a formal trading platform for hedging currency risk. Before the existence of currency markets trading in currency forwards had limited transparency on pricing.

Also, individual proprietors, exporters and MSMEs did not have access to currency markets. Currency Futures and Options are an asset class available to all with Price Transparency as an effective instrument to hedge against volatile currency movements. As per the SEBI rule currency futures trading is permitted in standardized contracts of USD/INR, EUR/INR, GBP/INR and JPY/INR while currency options may be traded in USD/INR. Also, Ms. Aggarwal updated the audience of the recently launched NSE Bond Futures which is an effective hedge against interest rate uncertainty.

CCI Orders Investigation Against Western Coalfields, Coal India

n yet another action against Coal India Ltd, the Competition Commission has ordered fresh probe into the state-run miner and its subsidiary for alleged abuse of dominant market position in fuel supplies. The probe would also look into the role of executives who were in-charge of business if violations of competition norms are found. The move comes less than two months after Competition Commission of India slapped Rs 1,773 crore penalty on CIL for unfair business ways. CCI had ordered another investigation against the miner in December.

Holding that there is a “prima facie” case, the fair trade watchdog has directed the Director General - its investigation arm - to probe the matter. The investigation has been ordered against Western Coalfields Ltd and Coal India. CCI said: “In case, DG finds that the Opposite Parties (OPs) have acted in contravention of the provisions of Act, it shall also investigate the

role of the persons who at the time of such contravention were incharge of and responsible for the conduct of the business of the company so as to fix responsibility of such persons under section 48 of the Act.” Those persons would also be given an opportunity to explain their stance. The latest order, dated January 22 but released today, follows a complaint filed by Wardha Power Company, which operates a 540 MW plant at Warora, Maharashtra. “The informant is aggrieved by the various clauses of the FSAs as well as acts and omissions of the OPs thereunder. It has alleged the abusive conduct of the OPs on the basis of legal, regulatory and the policy regime in the entire area of production and distribution of coal in India,” CCI noted.

It is pertinent to mention that the Commission had ordered investigations against Coal India and its subsidiaries for their alleged anti-competitive conduct in similar cases earlier, CCI added.

wing to the uncertainty about the unfolding political direction and about stability of the government,an overwhelming sixty-seven percent of the potential corporate investors would like to wait and watch till the general elections due in the next few months.

This was revealed by a recent Assocham survey on â&#x20AC;&#x153;Policy, Political concerns driving business Anxietyâ&#x20AC;?, with responses of over 1200 senior functionaries of India Inc which found that 67% of potential investors have put their investment plans on hold for now, while a further 8% are exploring the possibility of investing offshore rather than in India. Only a mere 2% are contemplating selling their businesses for a variety of reasons. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There is no doubt that businesses hubs are waiting for elections to bring stability and clarity on the future direction of our countryâ&#x20AC;? said Secretary General D S Rawat of Assocham., adding that â&#x20AC;&#x153; this is possibly one of the core reasons for the delays in private business investment decisions that have been observed in the recent quarterâ&#x20AC;?.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;The economic slowdown is still extremely burdensome on the Indian economy and additional local pressures are not helping at all. The embattled Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS) region continues to directly impact on local business expansion, while service delivery concerns and political uncertainty persistently lash organizational growth,â&#x20AC;? points out the survey.

However, Despite shorter-term investment uncertainty the business retains an optimistic view about the medium to long-term.

The economic situation in 2014-15 is projected to be improving in any case. Some 23 per cent of executives covered in the survey stated that they were optimistic about business prospects in India over the next 12 months.

As for the foreign investors, particularly in the politically-sensitive areas like multi- brand retail, it said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Foreign retailers like Walmart, Tesco and Carrefour are unlikely to enter the supermarket business in India before the 2014 general elections even though the government has partly addressed their concerns and relaxed the normsâ&#x20AC;?, adds the survey.

In the case of multi-brand retail, the concerns also revolve the specific political stand of the state governments as well since the trade is a state subject. Most of the states have expressed their opposition to the FDI in multi-brand retail, excepting largely the congress-ruled states. Such prospects increased after the results of the recent assembly elections and strong emergence of the Aam Admi Party (AAP).

The industry would need a big push from the new government in terms of reviving manufacturing and investment in the big ticket infrastructure projects requiring large scale financial debtâ&#x20AC;ŚHowever, only a stable government will be able to come out with a credible blueprint,â&#x20AC;?

It said â&#x20AC;&#x153;on several issues like corporate debt restructuring, easing of environment rules, allocation of natural resources, the new government will have to take decisions since delays and rigid attitude has already cost much in terms of loss of economic opportunities. â&#x20AC;&#x153;While the corporate India wants a transparent and clean government, the over- zealousness to â&#x20AC;&#x153;clean up the systemâ&#x20AC;? may lead to policy hold up,â&#x20AC;? added the report.

Auto Sector Pins Hope On Expo To Reignite Demand, Push Sales

mid economic slowdown, Auto Expo, the biggest spectacle in the Indian automobile sector, will begin next week with the industry hoping for a re-ignition of demand through the show which will see 70 new unveils.

Unlike in the past, the 12th edition of Auto Expo will be split into two due to space constraints, with the motor show being held at

Greater Noida and auto components exhibition at the traditional venue of Pragati Maidan during February 5-11. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There is pent-up demand, but consumers are delaying purchases because of factors like lesser income, high interest rates and inflation. We are hoping that this Auto Expo will draw them out to trigger demand, although the revival in the

automobile market is unlikely unless there is a revival of economic growth,â&#x20AC;? SIAM President Vikram Kirloskar told reporters yesterday.

During the expo, co-organised by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and the Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India (ACMA), there will be 70 new unveilings. Of these, 26 will be global models. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Moreover, 15 global cars will be unveiled during the show...,â&#x20AC;?

The Indian auto industry has been reeling under a prolonged slowdown, with annual car sales having declined for the first time in 11 years in 2013, posting a 9.59 per cent dip.

A ministerial panel on disinvestment yesterday approved the sale of a 10% stake in Engineers India through a follow-on public offer (FPO) by the government, which may fetch the exchequer Rs 500 crore. â&#x20AC;&#x153;EGoM has decided to clear the FPO of EIL. Ten per cent equity will be divested through an FPO. We are looking at around close to Rs 500 crore,â&#x20AC;? Disinvestment Secretary Ravi Mathur told reporters here. The Department of Disinvestment has already held overseas roadshows to attract foreign investors to the EIL stake sale.

What made you decide to go solo into direction?

My friend and co-director Raksha Mistry has gone overseas for some time and I always wanted to get into directing on an independent basis.

With the blessings and encouragement of my mentor mahesh bhatt – who is one of the co-producers and distributors of the film, I was able to make ‘Ya Rab’.

What is the film all about?

The film deals with the Muslim com-

munity and revolves around facts from the Koran. It takes a bold turn by depicting Muslims whose only aim is to correct those who misinterpret the Koran and its teachings. 'Ya Rab' will show people educating others and teaching them to refrain from using Islam as a means of spreading violence and terrorism in the world.

The basic idea of the film is to show how so far, Islam has been used as a tool to propagate terrorism, whereas the holy book – The Koran – does not approve of terrorism in any way at all.

We have not been consulted by the exploitation rights holders on making alterations to the marketing material, and the Tamil version of the film being titled 'Dawood' is mischievous and misleading. We are examining the matter and may be forced to act legally." During the release of 'DDay', Nikhil had always maintained that the film is a fictional plot and bears no resemblance to the life of Dawood Ibrahim and now, with the misleading title given to the Tamil version, Nikhil is all set to take legal action against the makers.

However, Abhishek is in no hurry to blow away the hard earned success of 'Dhoom 3' by signing films in a hurry. This is why the only film which he is currently working on is 'Happy New Year'.

Though one may feel that the industry has not given him his due, Abhishek says that people have been kind to him. "I think I have been given too much due. People consider me a much better actor than actually I am...I have a lot more to do. They are too kind to me," says the modest actor.

After more than a decade in the business he still considers himself “work in progress.” Abhishek admits, that to many in the audience, his best may not be good enough, and is willing to spend sleepless nights to change that view.

“So far, people have been supportive,” he says. For that, he thanks his stars, both the ones in the sky and the ones at home.

In fact his last solo hero film was 'Aisha' that was released way back in 2010. Now that he is also turning a producer with 'One by Two', the film holds all the more importance for Abhay who picks and chooses his assignments quite selectively.

The film has an advantage of being a solo release of the week.

ADULT entertainer-turnedBollywood actress Sunny Leone was in for a shock when her expensive lingerie went missing from the sets of 'Ragini MMS 2'.

Sunny's expensive designer lingerie, which she had worn for a few scenes of the film, was stolen from the sets. Sunny is very picky about her lingerie and to maintain the continuity of the shoot the producers had to order the same product again online, which took a couple of days to deliver. Post this incident, security on the sets of the film was beefed up.

Directed by Bhushan Patel, 'Ragini MMS 2' is slated to release on March 21.

However, its songs haven't quite found much reach, courtesy the mayhem that the film found itself in due to royalty issues, and hence delayed release of the soundtrack.

Moreover, though the movie has managed to catch some eyeballs, last few weeks have been all about 'Jai Ho' due to which 'One by Two' had some massive competition to encounter in terms of its overall reach to the audience.

All of this means that all would boil down to word of mouth for 'One by Two'.

SARAH Jane Dias, who'll be seen sharing screen space with Pulkit Samrat and Bilal Amrohi in upcoming film 'O Teri', is quite excited about playing the solo lead in the film.

“It was really special to play a solo lead, to actually feel the strength of my character and when I went in for the dub I was really happy to see myself on screen for that long with that many dialogues,” she said at the trailer launch of the film.

ELLINGTON: Their morale dented after losing the series, India would be desperate to salvage some lost pride by notching their maiden win on the tour when they take on a sprightly New Zealand in the fifth and final cricket one-dayer here today.

The Men in Blue have lost much in the past two weeks, in lieu of a 3-0 series loss as also the climb-down from their number one ODI ranking. The visitors lost the first ODI in Napier by 24 runs, then went down in Hamilton by 15 runs, tied the third ODI in Auckland, but lost the fourth in Hamilton by seven wickets to squander the series.

At the Westpac Stadium today then, they will be playing for more than just pride. A consolation win will mean that the series will end at 3-1 rather than 4-0, the latter a very embarrassing scoreline if it indeed comes to pass.

Even so, victory will only restore so much respectability for the reigning world champions, considering how awfully wrong things have gone for Mahendra Singh Dhoni and his team ever since they stepped out of home in early December. In seven ODIs since, they are yet to win a single match, losing five and tying one (one no-result).

If they indeed want to register their first win across all formats in nearly two months, they need to view this fifth ODI in singularity and not as part of the already lost contest. The fourth ODI at Seddon Park was a must-win game to keep the series alive, but India were not up to the mark. In a desperate bid to come back in the series, they made a plethora of changes, and most of them didn't work out as intended.

If the Wellington ODI is

would sit out after a none-toonoticeable debut outing, because Ambati Rayudu looked good in his cameo knock of 37 runs at number four. It was his first chance batting in an ODI since mid-2013. Suresh Raina has previously been given a very long rope and Dhoni has always stressed on the "need to learn from mistakes". In the bowling attack, Amit Mishra was seen warming up in the nets today, and could be a shoe-in to replace R Ashwin who has been offcolour recently.

WELLINGTON: Eyeing a consolation win in the fifth and final one-dayer, Indian allrounder Ravindra Jadeja said his teammates need to avoid panicking to curb the "little errors" that have cost them the series against New Zealand.

"It is just that we panic a bit and we have to reduce that percentage, those little errors.

I don't think there is any major problem as to why we are not clicking in batting and bowling," said Jadeja, defending his teammates ahead of the fifth ODI here today.

"We just need to avoid panicking and we can get positive results." Jadeja said the side is desperate to win the match to turn around its dismal tour so far. The Men in Blue have squandered the five-match series away 3-0, after losses in Napier and Hamilton (twice), whilst tying the ODI in Auckland. They need to win this match on Friday to avoid a 4-0 embarrassment.

"We want to win. We will have to win to keep a good morale for the Test series and going forward on the tour," said Jadeja. "We have to be positive and give 100 percent for there is nothing left to think now. We know our calibre and our capability and we have already done it in the past, in overseas conditions as well. I don't think there is a big difference in what the two sides are doing at the moment. It is about small things. In oneday cricket, two-three overs can make a difference, if you concede extra runs or cannot score enough in that period. That is a problem for us and we have to avoid mistakes in such times," he added. â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;4-0 WILL BE FANTASTICâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Elated after managing to "surprise" India with consistent performances, New Zealand allrounder Nathan McCullum today said his team will aim for a 4-0 result in the ongoing ODI series by going full throttle in the inconsequential fifth and final match here today.

Satish, Rahul shine as Karnataka take control of final H

YDERABAD: Ganesh Satish slammed an unbeaten 117 and shared 216 runs with opener Lokesh Rahul (94 batting) as Karnataka took control of their Ranji Trophy summit clash against Maharashtra on the second day.

After bundling out Maharashtra for 305, an addition of just 33 runs to their overnight 272 for five, in the first hour of the morning session today, Karnataka ended the second day on 230 for no loss in 68 overs.

Karnataka are now only 75 runs behind their opponents with all their wickets intact. Everything, including luck, went in favour of Karnataka except that their opener Robin Uthappa retired hurt on 10 on team's score of 14 in the fifth over after being hit on the left elbow by a delivery from Samad Fallah.

But the other opener Rahul and

one-down batsman Satish played some fine strokes and also capitalised on poor bowling and fielding by their opponents to place Karnataka in a strong position in the final match at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium.

Maharashtra bowlers toiled hard for two and half sessions on a pitch from which they did not get much purchase except in the first session during which they got some movement of the ball. They erred in line and length often and Rahul and Satish capitalised on them.

Maharashtra's woes were compounded by their poor fielding, as both Rahul and Satish were dropped twice each. Satish was dropped when on six and 89, while Rahul got lives when he was yet to open his account and on 74.

Despite the initial hiccups, which

saw Uthappa walking off the field, and themselves getting lives from butterfingered Maharashtra fielders, Satish and Rahul were never shy of playing strokes. Satish has hit 16 fours from the 207 balls he has faced so far, while Rahul has struck nine fours and a six from 189 balls.

Maharashtra bowlers began promisingly as they got some movement of the ball as there was some moisture left on the pitch even after the first hour in the morning session.

In the third over, Rahul was dropped off the bowling of Fallah in the eighth delivery he faced, though it was a tough chance. Harshad Khadiwale could get a hand on to the ball at gully but failed to get hold of it.

Two overs later, Uthappa walked off the field after being hit on his left

elbow by a Fallah delivery and in the ninth over Maharashtra wicketkeeper grassed an edge from Satish, who was then on six, the unfortunate being Fallah again.

Karnataka score was 28 for no loss then. Maharashtra had to pay for their fielding mistakes, even as Satish and Rahul grew in confidence in the second session and denied the opposition bowlers any success in the second and final sessions of the day.

Satish and Rahul scored 83 (in 26 overs) and 104 runs (28 overs) in the last two sessions on what turned out to be a grinding day for the Maharashtra bowlers. “I have been practicing incredibly hard in the last couple of weeks. You are going to be nervous, playing for your country.

Hopefully this time we play better.” Somdev will play the second singles against 284th-ranked Ti Chen, against whom he enjoys a 2-0 record. He defeated Chen in 2009 in a Davis Cup tie and then at the Asian Games in 2010. However, Somdev refused to be labelled as an outright favourite against Chen.

“The last couple of times I won but it’s long time ago, so don’t

want to take anything lightly. Like Anand has said, it’s going to be a tough match for us, very tricky. So we are doing all the things we can do to best prepare for it and give our best shot tomorrow,” he said.

Somdev is hopeful that Yuki will provide India a 1-0 lead as he is in good form. Yuki will clash with Yang in the first singles.

"He's been playing extremely well of late and he's coming in from a couple of good wins in Australia. Hope that confidence carries through, a lot of time it does," he said.

Asked how he and Rohan, being the senior members of the side lead the youngsters, Somdev said he shared a great bond with his teammates. "I have played a lot of tournament with these

guys. Sanam has been a teammate for a long time and I have known Jeevan (Nedunchezhiyan) since we were kids, we have grown up playing together in Chennai. It's a good group of guys. Important thing is to have good camaraderie.

"Jeevan asked me what kind of suit he needs to bring, so it's not really that much of leadership, rather (it's) just being friends with the guys and help them through in things they have never seen before.

"Last night we had fun at the dinner where we made the rookies dance in front of everyone. I don't know if they are happy with that kind of leadership. It's a Davis Cup tradition that we have some fun at their expense.”

MUMBAI: Indian football legend I M Vijayan said hosting the 2017 Under-17 FIFA World Cup will change the face of Indian football as the event would provide world-class infrastructure in the country.

“It will be good for youngsters. We will get good grounds, get a good combination of youngsters. The infrastructure will improve as they would have to build the required facilities and grounds. Moreover, the profile of India football can increase with more spectators coming at the stadia and watching on television,” Vijayan told PTI here.

“Later, we can have other football tournaments on those grounds after the conclusion of the World Cup. It will be a boost to the Indian football. The face of Indian football will change. Football will develop because of this,” he added. The former India captain said the country has many talented players, especially at the junior level and they need the opportunity to perform at a big stage.

“We have many talented youngsters but they are not getting the opportunity. We need to push them otherwise we won’t get good players,” he said.
