unters in the illegal betting business popularly known as ‘satta bazaar’ in India are all set to place their final bets on Sachin Tendulkar. Before the latter hangs up his boots after playing his last matches in November, punters are wagering full time on how many runs India’s most iconic batsman will score. Tendulkar, whose 24-year long cricketing career will come to an end in November, will play his 199th Test at Eden Garden in Kolkata and 200th at Wankhede in Mumbai. Talking to the ADC, a New Delhi based bookie, requesting anonymity said, “It will be the best event in the satta bazzar business, as punters will be more eager to bet on Tendulkar’s batting rather than on the victory of the matches.” In this regard, bookies across India are expecting cricket betting Continued on pg 8 «

CITY OPINIONS
Has the enthusiasm about Diwali gone down these days? Punit Bhavsar Working Professional YES. There is excitement about Diwali shopping or firecrackers among people any more. For working professionals like me, it is just another holiday that we look forward to.
Mamta Raikar Banker YES. Previously Diwali used to be a reason for shopping for new clothes and eating sweets. But now these activities have become routine. We don’t need a reason to shop or indulge in sweets any more. Diwali is no more special any more.
Karan Upadhyay Working Professional YES. The only thing that excites me about Diwali now is that it’s a chance for the family to be together. The excitement of new clothes, sweets and bursting firecrackers is not much.
Rashmi Iyer Student YES. Forget adults or teenagers, even children seem to less enthusiastic about Diwali. Previously, I used to children bursting firecrackers a week before Diwali began but now, there is hardly any action.
Santosh Anantharaman Merchant Navy YES. Diwali has lost its charm over years. It is now a holiday where people want to relax and spend time with family and friends. The craze for firecrackers seems to have gone down considerably.

U
nable to bear the loss of his mother, a 38-year-old man committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling of the bathroom at his tenement in Arnala. The incident was reported from the Vasudev Bua Nagar area of Arnala during the wee hours on Wednesday, police said. The body of the deceased, Santosh Mehar (38) was found hanging from the ceiling by a nylon rope. Investigations revealed that Santosh’s mother, Kashibai Mehar (82) passed away on Tuesday after a prolonged illness. “We believe that the shock of losing his mother was so much that it led him to commit suicide,” said an investigating officer.
ike any other final-year student, 19-year-old Vrushali Ramesh Gholap, had been burning the midnight oil for her exams. But here's the difference: Gholap suffered serious eye injuries due to a pressure cooker blast and in fact went on to appear for the paper with the help of a writer at the examination center on Wednesday. A Final Year B.Com student of Saint Gonsalo Garcia College in Vasai, Gholap suffered severe eye injuries following a pressure cooker blast in the kitchen of her house on the eve of her final paper on Tuesday. “Even after being in a lot of pain she did not want to waste her academic year and insisted on appearing for the last paper -Computer Systems and Applications,” said her father Ramesh Gholap, an auto-driver. Her parents then approached the management of Z.B. Zakaria College, the examination center, requesting permission from Mumbai University to allow her to appear for the paper with the help of a writer. Considering the genuineness of her appeal, the Controller of Examinations allowed her to have a writer in the form of Tejas Agarwal.

ted to the hospital on Tuesday. Doctors declared the death of her baby at 8 pm and her death at 9. However, relatives complained that she died in the afternoon but declared dead in late night. Photographer and muse
When Nikon Ambassador and digital photography specialist was in Mumbai in September, it was but natural that he would gravitate
towards the Mayor’s Bungalow at Shivaji Park where he met another photographer on whom he has bestowed lavish praise on his Facebook page. We give you a glimpse: ”One of the coolest things that my camera has given me is the ability to meet some of the most extraordinary people on the planet. This is Uddhav Thackeray, leader of the Shiv Sena political party arguably the most influential party in India. What is even cooler is he is a serious photographer. He also shares the same level of interest and passion as I do for digital infrared. We are at the Mayor of Mumbai’s home in which he is giving a signed copy of his book of aerial images of the castles of India. I was humbled by him and awed by the quality of his photographs.” Almost equally, Renowned photographer Vincent Versace of San Francisco was so he was bowled bowled over by Sunil Prabhu that he took this photograph of him and over by our declared he would vote for him if he was Indian. Mayor, Sunil
Prabhu, of whom he took some rather nice pictures, capturing his ‘soulful expression’ with a good deal of success. It seems foreigners always want to know how exactly this huge, chaotic, churning city verging on the anarchical is actually governed. So Vincent, who is based in LA, spent a day with Prabhu and had lunch with him, as part of a looping tour of Benaras and other places as well, before going home. According to sources close to the Mayor, Versace has declared at home that if he were a citizen of India, he would definitely vote for him, but of course we do not have to be so bowled over by Mr. Versace. His picture of Sunil Prabhu is so nice that we are reproducing it here for our readers.
Patna’s Gandhi Maidan
It is difficult to imagine bombs going off around the Gandhi Maidan, but this was the sort of disaster just waiting to happen. For that matter, it is difficult to envisage the Maidan itself as we once knew it, when we were children in a Bihar that still had to grow into the madness and the
DIARY
badness of the Laloo years. The Gandhi Maidan was a short, reluctant 15 minute walk from where we lived, a place to which we were trundled early every evening, slightly sleepy and bitterly protesting, prodded along by maids who couldn’t wait to get a breather in the company of others like them, trundling and prodding other children along. It seemed huge then, a vast expanse of ground which a couple of decades earlier had been called the Patna Lawns. Once upon a time apparently dog races were held there, but with the Indian Freedom Movement, it entered into the lexicon of gatherings as the best place to reach the largest number of people at one shot, long before Facebook and Twitter, WhatsApp and SMS took communication right out of our hands and gave it to the machines. Of course, this was a time when children went out to play, and so we did, under watchful eyes. We ran until we could hear the blood sing in our veins and collapsed on grass heated by the summer but still smelling sweet, and watched the sky wheeling above our heads. And never did we think there would come a time when calling Patna our hometown would seem a
03
distinct disadvantage to the rest of the country.
What was that, again?
“A 20-member delegation led by Deputy Chief Minister of Goa, Mr. Francis D’Souza, along with Minister of Tourism, Mr. Dilip Parulekar met the Tourism Minister of Israel, Mr. Uzi Landau in Jerusalem recently to promote Goa Tourism. This delegation showcased the state of Goa and also invited Mr. Landau to visit Goa with his delegation.” In other words, the Goan delegation is trying to sell Goa to the Israelis in the sense of inviting more tourism from there. And here we were under the impression that quite a bit of Goa has already been sold to Israelis – and the Russians. Surely Morjim, Anjuna, Calangute and Anjuna ring a bell, colonised as they are by both Israelis and Russians? As for tourism in the opposite direction, it’s already pretty established. And when we say ‘religious’, we mean ‘religious’, not an opportunity to whoop it up after a two-year mandatory stint in the army which includes terrorising the locals when they stray on to the beaches one has ‘taken over’ because of numbers!
Turkish delight
Please understand this very clearly. All of us who go to Turkey and visit Istanbul, do so because we want to eat Turkish Delight, sail down the Bosphorus, watch the belly dancers, definitely shop at the Grand Bazar, venture into a 400-year-old Turkish bath for ‘the full treatment’, visit Hagia Sophia etc etc. When our worthies from the BMC go there, preferably in a delegation, they go to hold earnest discussions with similarly placed politicians and discuss the possibilities of implementing a Bus Rapid Transit System in Mumbai. Which is what some of the party leaders are going to do shortly, having got their visas and packed their bags, this in spite of traffic experts declaring years ago that the plan was not practical for the city because the section in the middle of the major roads required for such a system has already been taken over in a lot of places by useless flyovers, when they are not occupied by the structures required for Metro and Monorail which look as if they will never be completed. Still, we suppose it is better to go and see for oneself since nowadays no one can be trusted, especially experts who purport to know better than elected representatives who really know everything. And we can vouch for the fact that Istanbul, straddling both Asia and Europe most satisfactorily, in terms of geography and culture, is one of the most fascinating places in the world to visit. On Tuesday, the country celebrated its 90th national Day with a huge party and our party columnist Marcellus Baptista was there to do some reporting.
The Turkish way, sparing no effort to keep the customers happy as the huge Turkish Airlines lounge in Istanbul airport.
Recently he also spent some time at Istanbul Airport on his way back from Naples, Italy, and was amazed at the Turkish Airlines lounge that is open for business class passengers, packed to the gills although it is sprawled across 3,000 sq m and capable of holding 2,000 passengers. Snaking his way through the
crowd he got a whiff of the extensive menu of hot and cold dishes on offer and the multitude of alcoholic options. His walkaround took him past private relaxation rooms, showers with special toiletry kits, playroom for children and private infant room, TV and music systems, daily local and foreign newspapers and
magazines, a billiard hall, library and business centre. And he is full of little details that party columnists pick up – the horizontal bed on the way back, choice of movies, in-flight cuisine with Turkish mezze, stuffed zucchini in olive oil, grilled swordfish with eggplant, red peppers and new potato puree, along with oven-fresh
bread, assorted cheese and jalebi. The next time we fly as usual on a low cost carrier, contemplating whether we need to spend Rs 135 on two slices of bread, a hint of butter separated by two slices of tomato and a skin of limp lettuce, we shall think of how much better we could do things, if only we were Turkish.

Man electrocuted atop Churchgate-bound train Similar accidents in the past:
By Kainaz Choksey
O
n Wednesday morning, an unidentified man was electrocuted while travelling on a Churchgate bound train. The incident took place at 10:20 am between Khar and Bandra on an Up fast Churchgate bound train. According to Senior Police Inspector V.P. Dhopawakar, Government Railway Police (GRP), Bandra, “The unidentified man is injured. He has suffered head injuries”. The victim, a resident of Powai, was immediately rushed to Bhabha Hospital. Rooftop travelling has become even more dangerous since February after power supply to trains was augmented by nearly 17 times. As such, the current coursing through overhead cables increased from 1,500 volt direct current (DC) to 25,000 volt alternating current (AC). If a person even ventures within a twometer radius, there is a good chance he will be sucked in by the current, and the resulting electric shock may be fatal.
A 19-year-old youth was electrocuted while performing stunts atop a suburban train near Tilak Nagar station. The deceased, Shamsher Alam Sheikh, had climbed onto the roof of a Central Railway local along with two of his friends at Mankhurd. In May, a 25-year-old commuting on a Virar-bound local died instantly after being electrocuted by heavily charged overhead wires. On March 20, a 25-year-old man who had entered a railway yard was electrocuted after he touched an overhead wire of a stationary local train between Mira Road and Bhayander. On March 19, a 20-year-old man was electrocuted while his friend suffered serious injuries near Khadavli railway station near Titwala, when the duo accidentally touched the overhead wires.

DCP Zone VIII prints 24,000 stickers as part of campaign about chain snatching and terrorism
By Zuber Ansari
I
n a creative move, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Zone VIII) Namdev Chavan has asked the six major police stations under his jurisdiction to paste stickers printed as part of an awareness campaign on chain snatching and terror activities in auto rickshaws and public places, to prepare the common man. The recent spate of chain and bag snatching incidents in the city has prompted this unique approach of educating people about how to tackle these kinds of crimes. This awareness program was asked to be implemented in every police station with immediate effect. Talking to the ADC, Chavan said, “Looking at the current increase in crimes like chain snatching and bag lifting which take place mostly in
autos and taxis, our aim is to make people aware. Considering Diwali is around the corner, markets and shopping areas are often crowded, and we hope to use these stickers to make them realise the importance of being alert to suspicious people and objects around them. Both stickers contain information asking passengers to note down the number of a vehicle that seems to be following them and inform the Mumbai Police control room.” Shashikant Talegaonkar, Senior Police Inspector, Vile Parle Police station said, “We have called singer Vaisahali Sawant to kickstart our campaign. NCP in the state over the Lok Sabha seat sharing. The Congress is insisting for more seats compared to the last elections and has made it clear that it will not accept the 26:22 formula, wherein the Congress is to field its nominee in 26 constituencies and NCP in 22. As a result the talks have been delayed and the new formula remained undecided. Against this backdrop the NCP’s move to attend the convention of Third Front is seen as pressure tactics to get things done their way. The Congress leaders in the state as well as in New Delhi have so far preferred to be tightlipped over this issue.

massive fire destroyed most of a godown at the Indian Corporation compound in Dapoda, Bhiwandi a little after Tuesday midnight. More than 50 fire fighters and twelve fire engines had to be brought in to control the situation, as the fire engulfed most of the 30,000 square feet space. Incidentally, this is the godown where the Britannia Biscuit Company stores its goods. The Fire Control Room rushed its personnel and vehicles, on receiving a call from Dapoda, but as the fire was big and a major area of godown was in flames, more fire engines were called in from nearby Thane, Ulhasnagar and Kalyan area. By Wednesday morning, the fire fighters controlled the fire but some smoke was still seen coming out from godowns. Goods worth lakhs of ru-

Road in Garodia Nagar, (which comes under the Pant Nagar police station’s jurisdiction), was of immense help to locals, as the presence of men in khaki proved a deterrent to antisocial elements. The beat chowkie, however, remained closed for most part of the day complained locals. A Garodia Nagar resident, Nilima Shinde (name changed), said, “The beat police chowkie which had opened at 90 Feet Road served to discourage anti social activity in the area. But its recent closure has led to a spurt in crimes lately.” The ADC spoke to the owner of a shop nearby who, on condition of anonymity, said, “The chowkie has been functional for the last three to four months. Policemen do visit the chowkie at certain times of the day and night. But I do agree that constant police presence will give respite to local residents in times hence it should remain open all the time.” When asked, Suresh Nirmal, senior police inspector of Pant Nagar police station, under whose jurisdiction the beat chowki is located, said, “The 90 Feet Road beat chowkie, near Garodia Nagar is fully functional. Policemen do take regular rounds of the area and can be found inside the beat chowkie also. They even use it during lunch time, and can be seen patrolling the area at night. But on certain occasions, like police bandobasts or emergency situations, the beat chowkie may remain closed.”

He further clarified that no names will be deleted from the voters’ list until and unless the concerned person does not respond personally. Despite repeated attempts to contact the authorities of the SWM head office at Palton Road, no officials could be contacted. When ADC spoke to Chandrakant Handore, the local MLA, he denied that anyone obstructed civic engineers who came to survey the municipal ground to build a transit camp. He said, “There was a C-building in Chembur which required demolition and redevelopment and hence its occupants (all municipal employees) were shifted to a transit camp. Seven years passed since the relocation, but that building could not be redeveloped and the employees are still in the transit camp. What guarantee can one give if the BMC shifts the residents of these
16 municipal buildings at PL Lolkhande Marg to a transit camp built in the adjacent municipal ground, by promising that all 16 buildings will be demolished and redeveloped? There are around 300 to 350 families living in these 16 buildings, out of which, only half of them can be relocated, even if a new transit camp is being built.” Handore further said that even if he meets the Municipal Commissioner regarding the transit camp buildings, the commissioner might say that the families will be relocated to MHADA transit camps built at Mahul Gaon, GM Link Road, Lallubhai Compound and Mankhurd instead of spending money to build new transit camps. “However, if the municipal employees of these 16 buildings approach me, then I will surely speak to the Municipal Commissioner and request him to redevelop these 16 buildings into towers within a time frame of one and a half to two years, so that these residents can be relocated at the same place,” added Handore.

G
iving a major blow to its alliance partner Congress, the Sharad Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) yesterday suddenly jumped in to the camp of third front parties. The NCP attended the meeting convened by the left parties to form a non-Congress, non-BJP
government. As the Lok Sabha elections are approaching, the Third Front parties aim to form a non-Congress, non-BJP government at the Centre on the plank of secularism and have called a meeting on Wednesday. The Left parties’ initiative for this convention was reciprocated by the Samajwadi Party, JDU and other secular parties.
Senior NCP leader D.P. Tripathi
However, eyebrows were raised when the NCP, the oldest alliance partner of the Congress attended the meet. Senior NCP leader D.P. Tripathi was present at the convention. Speaking to reporters, NCP leader Praful Patel said that his party was merely attending the meeting against communalism with like-minded parties. “Too much should

The accused, Vijay Kantilal Panchal, was nabbed by a special team that caught him from Bhandup after searching for him for almost ten days. He was staying along with his family members and brother Nitesh Panchal, to whom victim had got married in Pune. The woman, aged 31, had tied the knot with Nitesh, then a Pune resident, in 2003. After facing marital issues and being thrown out of the house by her husband in 2009, she moved to her parents’ place in Thane’s Kishan Nagar. Finally in 2011, the couple’s relatives brokered a settlement between them. Nitesh came to Thane and took her back to his house in Pune. The girl was a regular Facebook user and got into trouble when one of her chat friends on the social networking site, living in Nalasopara, called her to meet him at Vasai where he offered her a cold drink. The girl, who became unconscious after consuming the drink, was taken to a hotel and raped by the ac-

After this incident, the girl began avoiding him but he threatened to circulate the sex clip and also show it to her fiancé if she refused to sleep with him. The Narpoli police have registered a case against Aman Pandey, Suraj Pandey and Khushbu Pathak under sections 376 and 420 of the IPC for rape and molestation of a minor girl. Senior Police Inspector D.B. Patil said, “We have registered a case and our team is searching for the accused.”

The Congress is insisting for more seats compared to the last elections and has made it clear that it will not accept the 26:22 formula, wherein the Congress is to field its nominee in 26 constituencies

and NCP in 22. As a result the talks have been delayed and the new formula remained undecided. Against this backdrop the NCP’s move to attend the convention of Third Front is seen as pressure tactics to get things done their way. The Congress leaders in the state as well as in New Delhi have so far preferred to be tightlipped over this issue.

y dentist put it best. ‘It’s like carnival time for you journalists, isn’t it?’ he said ‘watching the news on television is like watching a political soap opera’. This comment from my very politically conscious dentist, Victor Rodriguez, came the day after the Prime Minister and Narendra Modi took potshots at each other in Ahmedabad at that function held in honour of Sardar Patel. Modi started the spat by saying more clearly and publicly than anyone has ever done before that India would have been a different and better country had Patel become our first prime minister instead of Jawaharlal Nehru. ancient Bihar. To make it absolutely clear that he detested Modi with a passion he also compared him to Hitler and mocked him for sweating so much during his speech because ‘he was overcome with excitement at the thought of being prime minister’. If you have noticed that this is an unusually low level of political discourse you would have noticed right. Modi’s historical details may be dodgy but when he speaks about present times he has said exactly the things that Indians want to hear. He has spoken of how vikas or development is the key to ending poverty and of how Hindus and Muslims should come together in this fight instead of fighting each other. He has talked of how important it is for India to set itself a definite goal for ending poverty by its 75th year as a

who continue to live in relief camps in appalling conditions. When it comes to the poverty question the most important question of all that Rahul Gandhi should answer is why he thinks there continues to be such horrible poverty in India despite his family having been in power for so long? As such a champion of the poor he must know the answer. These are political questions that Modi has raised in his rallies and the response of his opponents has mostly been to charge him with fascism, communalism and making mistakes about history. If this is all they can come up with then all they are likely to do is strengthen the hands of Modi and miss the wood for the trees. I say this as someone who has in recent weeks driven across Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan and personally seen the anger and despair that exists among ordinary people not just in towns but in villages.
Man unnecessarily creates problems. I want you to understand that there are no problems in life except those you create. Just try to see: whatsoever feels good for you is good. Then go the whole way. Even if the whole world is against it, it doesn’t matter. And whether you have gone total and whole will be decided by the reward. If you start feeling at one point a sudden
MATTER & SPIRIT melting then you know that you have not cheated yourself, that you have been sincere and true. That now is really the point where you can be proud. You are never quiet inside. There is still some anger inside you that you don’t understand yet. Something says to be quiet, to shut up but you have a hard time listening to that voice inside saying to be quiet. You are afraid of it. Just don’t repress the anger anymore. Whatsoever is left has to be brought out, because that is the only way to be really quiet. You can forcibly still yourself but the stillness is and sooner or later it will be disturbed because just underneath it the anger is boil-
ing and waiting for its moment and the opportunity. Then one goes on sitting on a volcano. Everything seems quiet when the volcano is not erupting, is not active, but it is preparing inside. Some anger has come out, some is still there — and the anger that has come out was superficial. Throw the anger that needs to come out is deeper — that’s why it is difficult to understand it. One part of the anger is understandable because it is related to people, to situations. You can understand why you are angry; the why is clear. But when this layer, this superficial layer of anger is thrown away, then suddenly you come on a source of anger that is not related to the outside at all, which is simply part of you. Nobody has insulted you, in fact there is no excuse to be angry — and then it is there. It becomes very difficult to understand because you cannot throw the responsibility on anybody else. Now it is something that is within you, that belongs to you. We have been taught that anger comes only in a certain tense situation. That’s not true. So one first has to throw the anger that is related. There is no need to understand it. Just throw it, not on anybody, but on a pillow, on the sky, on God, on me! Just throwing is the point. — OSHO

This was highly a departure from the usual as former Chinese leaders are not known to host visiting leaders from other countries. Singh’s speech at the Central Party School was also unique as he was the first Indian leader invited to speak there. I, however, feel that this is sugar coating the bitter pill and the olive branch that is being offered is made of crocodile smiles if one may concoct the terminology. It would be more conducive to better relations between the two countries if China desists from its forays into the Indian Territory on the North Eastern Frontier. Modi on Sardar Patel
Congress’ downfall
Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh has been surrounded by various scams, and he now claims to be ready to face a CBI inquiry if need be. Gujarat, during the unveiling of the tallest statue of the venerable Late Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel at Ahmedabad today shared the dais
with the PM and during his speech was frank and forthright in saying that had the Sardar been our first PM, the fate of our country would have been different definitely with a face of prosperity. The country would have been on the ‘path of development’ and growth ‘devoid of deficits’ had Late Lal Bahadur Shastri continued to be the PM or had the Late Morarjee Desai become the next PM. The subjects of this independent nation would have been very fortunate undoubtedly. The PM is said to have stated that the ‘Sardar’ was associated with the ‘same’ party as that of him. This sounds ridiculous indeed as the Congress of that period comprised ‘people of repute’ and ‘sacrifices‘ and did not care for any office in the government, were ‘service oriented’ and certainly not of people who could go very low to stick to their chairs and let the country go astray in every sphere with total inertia against Pak attacks and cease fires apart from Chinese intrusions.
WHILE returning from Russia and China, I welcome the bold and courageous statement of Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh that he is ready for any questioning by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the Coalgate scam which has been supervised by the Supreme Court and ready to face anything as he has nothing to hide. With the opposition party BJP putting pressure that the PM who was in-charge of the coal ministry in 2005-06 is responsible for the allocation of blocks and must be interrogated by the CBI, the PM he has silenced his critics who only believe in targeting the Congress Party and do not have any agenda except that of hate and dividing the country on the basis of caste and religion. I strongly feel that the CBI which is under attack for being partial and biased and working under the UPA government must come out clean and question the PM without fear to find out the truth in the Coalgate scam which has brought a dark shadow on the future of the Congress Party. It is high time for the honest Dr. Singh to reveal the truth.

Stylish silhouettes
Jewellery designer Maria Khan tells Jessica Turakhia what readers should keep in mind while purchasing jewellery for Diwali
Designer Aniket Satam tells Rhea Dhanbhoora what Diwali trends to look into What trend would you say is in style right now? Now is the time to indulge and embrace regal nostalgia and experiment with unusual styles, predominantly inspired by royal costumes from pre-partition India. The Gharana style with timeless elegance is in vogue. What runway trends can women follow off the ramp? Keep the designs basic yet dramatic and glitter quotient tonal. Focus on one detail and the colour palette. Intricate and delicate patterns with embellishments are in trend over massive motifs. Asymmetrical placements of embroidery are in trend over jazzy border patti styles. Could you tell us about what kind of shoes can be paired with Diwali outfits, this season? Jaipur mojris are a delight. Buy them in bold shades, neutrals and mirror work for parties. The Kholhapuri style is also a great option, especially when one can get them in rainbow of colours and even in metallic. Play smart and invest in gold and timeless neutral for rustic appeal. Avoid closed shoes and pumps, but opt for open-toes and sandals.
wear versions where the pallav transforms into racer back straps attached to the churidar’s waist itself. Half sari: Go vintage chic by donning a south Indian classic with a twist. Team a pre-pleated lungi skirt with a vintage style bracelet sleeved blouse. It’s time to ditch those heavy pallavs and go for tulle drapes which are draped and fixed to choli itself (like that worn in Chennai Express), making it easy to maintain your silhouette. Gown sari: This modern silhouette has become a must-have in any girl’s wardrobe. The sensual sari silhouette now comes in interesting styles and forms of goddess gowns. Think of teaming experimental draping to bodices which allows you to sport the grace of pre-draped styles with no fussy pallav maintenance. Angarkha jacket: Layer the basic bandeau with a striking asymmetrical angarkha jacket for a modern yet regal option to style festive fashion with quirky panache.
Diwali is just around the corner, what advice would you give women purchasing jewellery? Considering everyone is bound by a budget, my advice would be to purchase jewellery that can be used for multiple looks.
Tell us what colours are in style this Diwali? This festive season, neon is still great as it brightens up any evening. Along with bold brights, warm palette of Indian staples such as fuchsia, rani pink, marigold orange and turmeric yellow are in vogue. Mithai shades such as pista green, lemon zest, rooh afza pink and peach are great options.
What kind of jewellery would you recommend? Today, women want to wear something which is chic, classy and not over-the-top. I suggest pieces that complement their personality and can be carried off easily. At the same time, it’s important that the jewellery goes with the outfit.
Indo-western is a big trend this year. Could you suggest a few ways to pair it? Graphic Galore: Think fusion patterns such as graphic ikat, or dispersed hounds-tooth and team them up with traditional and bold styles. Layering is in prime focus. A simple mul jacket in graphic pattern looks interesting with a simple sheath dress. Maxi effect: Upgrade the regular Anarkali silhouette. Think modern and transform this desi staple into a funky maxi with sporty details such as neon contrast zippers and funky yokes. Print party: Celebrate with a fresh take on neon by sporting simple yet dramatic tunic tops made from traditional print techniques such as rural gavti prints, graphic leheriya duppatas or simple bandhini polkas. Could you tell us a few offbeat ways to wear Indian attire this Diwali? Jumpsuit sari: Forget the petticoat and dress the sari on a sling churidar for more movement or opt for ready to
Sparkle & shine
What are the latest jewellery trends this season? This season we will see chains, charms, black and gold. Some like a chunky look while others prefer a chic look with a statement piece. How would you define your personal style? My motto is to dress for yourself and others will be impressed. >> Aniket tells us that Anarkali jumpsuits like the one on the right are in style
What should be kept in mind while picking festive jewellery? Choose something that you will like for a long time. It should suit
your personality. Should women go all out or keep it minimalistic? The amount depends on the outfit you are wearing. If you are wearing an embellished lehenga/ sharara, I suggest earrings and a nice cocktail ring. At the same time, if the outfit is simple, wear chunky jewellery without overdoing it. If you are wearing chandelier earrings, just add bangles or a statement neckpiece with small earrings. With a sari, wear long earrings, a cuff and a cocktail ring. Nothing more. With an embellished salwar kameez, opt for chandelier earrings with a thin bracelet and watch. If they can only pick one piece, what should it be? My pick is a statement necklace. Any coloured stones in style? Black and gold stones. Western designs or Indian designs — which is trendier? As we see more and more western influence, I would definitely invest in a piece that is western, but Indian designs are timeless.
BRIGHTEN UP THIS DIWALI
Priyanka Singh speaks to makeup artist Ishita Khanna on the makeup trends for Diwali What are the makeup trends for Diwali that are in vogue right now? Bright lips and glitter are the perfect makeup trends for Diwali.
>> Ishita Khanna says a slight smokey eye makeup is all you need this season
What are the latest makeup trends that women can follow on Diwali without looking too decked up? Go easy on makeup and apply it intelligently to avoid looking overdone. Get clean eyes with a beautiful shimmer, slight smokey kajal on the water line, heavy mascara and a pinkish orange blusher. End it with a bright pink or an orange-ish red lip colour.
Give us some makeup tips to follow if you are wearing an Indo-western outfit. Apply a heavy smokey effect with black, brown, blue or green eye shadow along with heavy mascara and a lot of kohl. Apply the same colour on the lower lash line and fill kohl and apply mascara to the lower eye lid as well. Use a lighter colour blush (such as baby pink or just peach) with a little shimmer. Keep the lips a little softer as you are going heavy with the eyes. What makeup tips would you suggest for an Indian outfit?
Apply a beautiful shimmer and nice winged liner. Since the eyes are not very heavy in makeup, you can go all out with a bright lip colour. Any skin care tips for Diwali? Protect your skin from all the pollution that Diwali brings with it. During the day, it’d be great if you can cover your face with a scarf while commuting. During Diwali, you will be applying a lot of makeup, so make sure you use a sun block during the day and a good moisturiser at night. Before you sleep, don’t forget to remove your makeup.

« CAREER ADVICE finDing it tough to brush off a nosey Colleague? finD out what you Can Do One of my colleagues is extremely nosey. Once, I actually found her snooping around my computer. When I confronted her about it, she quickly covered up by telling me that her computer wasn’t working. Moreover, she is always asking me about my personal life and I find this very annoying. I do not want to sound unfriendly or harsh but I cannot stand this. How do I deal with her irritating behaviour? — alia singh, tardeo
MUMBAI | THURSDAY, OCTOBER 31, 2013
ThaT’s mine! >> Confronting the person will ensure that “mistakes” are not repeated
Dear alia, The next time you find your colleague snooping around your things, tell her politely yet firmly, that you do not appreciate her going through your stuff. Ask some of your trusted colleagues to keep an eye on her for you when you are not around. Also, tell her she needs to check with you before using your computer and if need be, stand next to her while she operates your computer to ensure that she is not going through your mail or any other private folders. If her behaviour still persists, then don’t hesitate to take the matter to a higher authority. When it comes to her interfering with your personal life, gently tell her that you’re uncomfortable talking about your personal life with her and that you would appreciate it if she didn’t involve herself. Hopefully your pesky colleague will understand that you are on to her and that her presence is unwelcome.

rom leaving your name off the list of project contributors to a colleague taking your entire idea and presenting it as his or her own, there are a number of ways a co-worker could be stealing your work. The situation might seem comical, but it can have important ramifications, as your boss might think that you’re not doing your share of work. What do you do in such situations? These pointers will help.
Do not be meek When something such as a co-worker taking credit happens, don’t we all think, ‘What can I do now? Let it be.’ However, as we mentioned earlier, it can affect your career in a big way, so do not ‘let it be’ at any costs. It’s alright if you do not want to turn it into a big a deal, but, the least you can do is go and talk to the colleague in question.
Confront the person This works when it is a minor situation such as your name being left off the list of contributors. It might be a genuine oversight or in the worst case, the co-worker may have something against you. Both situations can be solved by confronting the person responsible. If it’s a mistake, let it go (confronting them will ensure that such a mistake won’t happen again), but if the person’s behaviour is unethical, warn him/her that you won’t tolerate this in the future and will take it to your superiors if it happens again.
speak to others Before you go to your boss, speak to your other colleagues and find out if it’s been happening with them as well. Even if it isn’t, at least you will end up getting the support of your fellow workers. How does this work? Well, the co-worker who has been stealing your work will feel cornered and there is a high chance that he/she won’t repeat it again.
I recently joined a new company as I was unsatisfied with my previous job. But, now I feel like I’ve made a big mistake. All my colleagues are a generation older than me and although they are kind, they have very fixed ideas when it comes to work. They are not open to fresh and innovative ideas. I cannot afford to leave this job so please help me! — priya Doshi, ghatkopar Dear priya, A problem like yours arises in every organisation, even if there is no generation gap. The best thing you can do is meet your colleagues half way. Listen to their ideas positively and suggest ways to improvise. Not only will they think that you’re respecting them, they will also be more open to your ideas. Be diplomatic when putting forth your ideas. After pitching an idea, use phrases such as, “I would like your opinion” or “What do you think of...” to involve them. This will make your seniors feel like you hold their opinion in high regard. Frankly, everyone likes an ego boost. If you say that your colleagues are kind, they’re bound to be accommodating.

take it to your superiors This should be your last option. It would be best if you could go in with some proof of the fact that your co-worker has been stealing your work as otherwise it could look like wild, baseless accusations.

Dear Anna, While pranking in small doses can actually be a whole lot of fun, I think you’ve reached your limit. If you can’t get through your day without feeling nervous and on edge, in your own home that too, it’s time to talk to your man about the pranks. Explain that you enjoy them but that they have become too common and it’s affecting your daily living. I’m sure he will understand and tone it down. You’ll could also try introducing
prank-free days so that you know you can relax. Another alternative is to forbid pranks at home. That way, you know that your home is a safe haven. FIRANGI BAHU
SIPPORA ZOUTEWELLE PLAYS
MUMBAI | THURSDAY, OCTOBER 31, 2013
As more and more foreign nationals come to India, one is often prompted to ask “Can a foreigner feel at home in India?” Sahara One will address this question through its brand new, light-hearted family show Firangi Bahu to go on air from Monday, November 11 at 7:30 pm. The show will put forth a concept that has never been seen in the history of Indian television: a foreigner who comes to stay in her sasural in India. We spoke to Sippora about her Indian sojourn Sandeep Hattangadi
What is the backdrop of the show? It is a well-known fact that foreigners are fascinated by India, its colourful festivals, traditions and diverse cultural heritage. This fascination makes them want to try and become a part of Indian culture. At the same time Indians too, are quite curious about the West. They have accepted Western influences on Indian food, attire, art, music and many other things. However when it comes to the sacred institution of marriage, Indians still consider people from the West to be unwelcome representatives of a world that is too different and alien. And it is amidst this background that Firangi Bahu is set. What is your character in the show? The show will take viewers through the journey of a British girl, Camili Jonathan, played by me who marries into the conservative Desai family in Rajkot, Gujarat. The story starts with Pranay Desai (Rohit Bhardwaj), the youngest son of the Desai family, who is in London for higher studies and meets Camili Jonathan (Sippora). Slowly through her eyes, Pranay begins to see India, his own country, in a new light. He begins to admire things that he had overlooked over the years, despite being an Indian

himself. In the process, Pranay falls in love with Camili’s simple lifestyle and her perspective of India. Aware of his conservative family background, he decides to marry Camili in London and return to India.
What is the USP of the show? This is the first time that a foreigner is playing a bahu in a Hindi serial. This is clutter breaking; a real first time event on Indian television. Moreover, this provides sufficient scope for drama and lighter moments. Viewers will enjoy watching a European lady adapt to a conservative Gujarati family. At the same time, her journey will result in a lot of drama. I hope viewers support us in our endeavour to bring them something new. And I hope they appreciate the effort we have made to do this. How was it like working on the show? It was a great experience to work with veterans like Indira Krishnan, Pranoti Pradhan, Deepmala Parmar, Dilip Darbar, Hetal Puniwala, Paresh Bhatt and Rohit Bhardwaj.

Adjusting for demerger of Kaya business, Marico reported a revenue growth of 5% in Q2FY14 driven by volume growth of 4% in domestic FMCG business and PAT growth of 23% to Rs1,059mn. While gross margin expanded by 197bps to 50.0%, EBITDA margin increased by 211bps to 15.0%. Domestic business revenue growth was impacted by one-time paring down of inventory level at distributors’ end. The company’s twin focus on rural and modern trade distribution channels continue — rural markets now contribute >30% to Marico’s domestic sales and modern trade posted a 13% YoY revenue growth. We exclude Kaya revenues from our earnings projections and lower revenue growth in FY14 and FY15 by ~9%, and reduce our EPS estimates for FY14 by 1% and for FY15 by 2%. With distribution reach expanding by 15% through more feet-on-street, 50% of which is in rural areas, the company shall benefit on revenue growth in FY15. Our PAT estimates remain 8%-9% higher than the consensus’. Maintain BUY: We exclude Kaya revenues from our earnings projections and factor in a lower revenue growth in Q2FY14 and reduce our FY14 and FY15 earnings estimates by 1%-2%. We maintain BUY rating on the stock with a revised target price of Rs240/share, derived as a triangulated average of PE (Rs217: 23xFY15E EPS), DCF and Mcap/sales. The stock currently offers 3.7% FY15E FCFF yield.
Centrum calls a ‘Buy’ on HT Media CMP: Rs. 82 Target Rs. 120
We maintain BUY rating on HT Media with a target price of Rs120 (12x Sept 2015) as we believe the company is well positioned to capitalise on the upturn in the economy. With strong operating leverage expected, cushion of Rs7.5bn in cash, valuations at 5year low coupled and stock trading at a steep discount to peers (~35% discount to DB Corp & 20% discount to Jagran Prakashan), we remain optimistic on the company. Q2FY14 results were below expectations on the back of lower than expected other income while ad growth remained subdued at 6.1% and circulation growth at 14% YoY. Valuation & risks: HT Media is trading at 8.8x/7.7x FY15E/FY16E PE respectively which is 5-year low valuation. We value the company at 12x Sept 15 and arrive at a target price of Rs120. HT Media is also trading at steep discount of ~35% to DB Corp and 20% to Jagran Prakashan. We believe HT Media is well placed to capture the upside from the upturn in the economy, offer operating leverage on the back of break even in the Mumbai edition and due to the cushion on net cash position of Rs7.5bn. Downside risk could be high competition in the Hindi market with the entry of DB Corp in Bihar and further increase in newsprint prices impacting margins.
Religare calls a ‘Buy’ on Tata Communications CMP: Rs. 252 Target Rs. 400
TCOM reported a strong Q2 led by a sharp 240bps expansion in the EBITDA margin to 16.9%, which drove PAT to Rs 804mn (first profitable quarter since FY09). We believe steps taken over the past year to boost profitability are yielding results, and raise our FY14/FY15 EBITDA by 6%. TCOM remains one of our high-conviction ideas and a turnaround in profitability/potential deleveraging should help drive the stock price. We raise our TP to Rs 400 (from Rs 200) on higher valuations for the core business and Neotel. BUY. Strong Q2 driven by margin beat: TCOM reported revenues of Rs 49.5bn, up 16% YoY, in line with expectations. Global voice business grew 15% YoY and Data business 19% YoY. EBITDA margins improved by 240bps to 16.9% as against our expectations of flattish growth, with the beat primarily driven by lower employee costs (-160bps). Data business margins saw a sharp 540bps QoQ improvement to 22% and the voice business margins were steady at 10.4%. Overall, the strong margin performance helped TCOM deliver an EPS of Rs 2.8/share for the quarter. Raising estimates: We raise our EBITDA margin expectations for FY15 to 15% from 14.4% previously, leading to a c.6% upgrade in the EBITDA. View – BUY: TCOM has seen a sharp 40% bounce since our upgrade. We remain positive on the company’s improving business fundamentals, which would help drive a significant leverage on stock valuations. Further, potential asset monetisation would help reduce leverage and unlock shareholder value. We roll over to a Dec’14 TP of Rs 400 (from a Mar’14 TP of Rs200) driven by a significant increase in core business value to Rs 270 (based on 5x EV/EBITDA). Maintain BUY. on your own. It could be harmful/dangerous. You have also asked about a tilt in your penis. A mild to moderate tilt in a penis is a variation of normal that does not need any treatment. If the tilt causes pain or starts hampering the penetration during intercourse, only then does it need to be treated/corrected. You have asked for the names of medicines. Before prescribing any medication, ethically it is necessary to examine and investigate each case to properly diagnose the underlying cause for these manifestations. It is the cause that needs to be treated and not just the symptoms. Moreover, it is beyond the scope of this question-answer column to prescribe any medication for your problems.

NON-CONG, NON-BJP PARTIES MEET AND TALK ABOUT FORGING UNITY

mid efforts to form a Third Front, several regional parties including Left, JD(U), AIADMK, BJD and UPA ally NCP, today came together at a convention here with their leaders pitching for unity among them to defeat the "threat" from fascist and communal forces, according to PTI. JD(U) leader and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar appeared to target BJP's Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi as he said some leaders go after those who oppose their views or ideologies and talk about "cleansing" them. Addressing the 'Convention against Communalism', he said the 17 parties assembled at the meet should forge "maximum possible unity" to defeat the threat from "fascism, communalism and terrorism" to the country. "The question being asked is that if this convention means formation of a new front. As of today, this is not the case. But we all have to think that in the face of fascism, communalism and terrorism, democratic forces should maintain maximum possible unity on issues to

ing, this country is demanding since 1989 that a member from Gandhi family becomes the Prime Minister of the country. "Since 1989, this thing is being talked about in the country. People are waiting for it with eagerness. So the person about whose PM candidateship you are talking... It is not only me but the whole country is demanding and expecting that somebody from Gandhi-Nehru family comes and becomes Prime Minister," party spokesperson Raj Babbar told reporters at the AICC briefing. The remarks by the AICC spokesperson came when he was asked whether Congress has decided on Rahul Gandhi as its PM candidate for the next general elections given that Babbar made comparisons between the working styles of Gandhi and Narendra Modi. At the outset Babbar slammed Modi over his "dynastic politics" remarks against Gandhi and noting that there are two ideologies of inclusive secularism and divisive communalism in the country.
SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav, whose party is in power in UP, said Muzaffarnagar riots were fomented by communal forces. "At least we got together (on the same platform). If we unite, communal forces will not able to
raise their head...We have crushed communal forces and we will continue to crush communal forces whenever they rear there head again," he said. Yadav's colleague Ram Gopal Yadav said today's meeting was a "beginning" for the shape of things to come in the future. NCP leader Praful Patel justified the party's participation in the convention, saying "in the era of coalition politics, we have to keep our options open of working with other parties." Besides Kumar and Mulayam Singh Yadav, the convention was attended by CPI(M) leaders Prakash Karat and Sitaram Yechury, NCP's D P Tripathi, JD(S) leader H D Deve Gowda, AIADMK's M Thambidurai and CPI's A B Bardhan. Nitish Kumar said some leaders say 'chun chun kar saaf karo' (resort to cleansing). What kind of language is this? In a democracy, you win elections by defeating others. But why use phrases like cleansing others?" Hitting out at Modi, the Bihar Chief Minister said everyone needs development
but the model of development is important. "A choice has to be made between models which favour corporate houses or inclusive models which focusses on the development of common man," the JD(U) leader said. He said non-inclusive models which do not care for the poor and the weaker sections cannot suceed while models with emphasis on human development would have a stronger foundation. In yet another salvo at Modi, Kumar said there are forces in the country which do not tolerate dissent. In this context, he said there have been efforts to malign Nobel laureate Amartya Sen after he had praised work done in Bihar. Kumar, in an apparent attack on VHP, said people were taking out "untimely" religious processions and yatras in an attempt to "raise passions and create divisions". The Bihar Chief Minister went on to caution the media also, saying it can report freely only in a democracy. Yadav said, "I have been a victim of communal forces but in UP we have given them a befitting reply."
RSS, BJP must give Modi lessons in Indian history: Digvijay NEW DELHI (PTI): Congress leader Digvijay Singh today ridiculed Narendra Modi over his "gaffes" during the recent Hunkar rally speech in Patna even as he asked RSS and BJP to teach the Gujarat Chief Minister lessons in Indian history. "RSS and BJP must give Modi lessons in Indian history to avoid such guffaws. Or is this the history taught at Saraswati Shishu Mandir?" Singh, the Congress Gen-
eral Secretary, said in a post on 'twitter.Com'. Posting a poem by a poet from Bundelkhand region on "Modi's guffaws of Indian history", Singh asked "Does BJP still want Modi to be their PM-in-waiting?". Singh's attack on Modi came a day after Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar Kumar mocked his Gujarat counterpart's "amazing" knowledge of history. Kumar had referred to Modi's wrongful mention of
the Taxila historical site as being in Bihar and of Chandragupta Maurya as a ruler belonging to Gupta dynasty. Another party general secretary, Shakeel Ahmed, meanwhile, hit out at Modi in another tweet, saying, "When you address a gathering, consider yourself the 'Wisest' and the listeners a 'A Bunch of Fools'. Modi treats his followers the same way."

IN BRIEF Ponting ‘offended’ as Taylor wades into Clarke feud
VIRAT FAST
Kohli, Dhawan centuries help India to another stunning chase By S S Ramaswamy
N
AGPUR: India pulled off a sensational six-wicket victory over Australia in the do-or-die sixth cricket one-dayer, riding on Virat Kohli's brutal unbeaten 115 and Shikhar Dhawan's blistering century to level the seven-match series 2-2 here. Chasing a mammoth 351, the Indians gave ample display of their batting firepower on a belter of a track at the VCA Stadium at Jamtha to overhaul the target with three balls to spare in what turned out to be a thrilling floodlit contest which went down the wire. The incredible run chase brought back memories of India's awesome victory in Jaipur on October 16 when they overhauled a stiff target of 360, achieving the second highest successful run chase ever in ODI history. Dhawan (100), Rohit Sharma (79) and Kohli -- who hit the third fastest ODI hundred by an Indian from just 61 balls, were the main architects of India's victory in the high-scoring tussle which has restored the balance of the series after the Ranchi and Cuttack

George Bailey plays a reverse sweep during his knock of 156. ODIs were washed out. Earlier, George Bailey (156) and Shane Watson (102) smashed scintillating centuries as Australia put the listless Indian bowling attack to the sword to post an imposing 350 for six after being in to bat. India replied in stunning fashion with Dhawan hitting his fourth ODI ton in his 24th match while Kohli struck his 17th century in his 118th match. Dhawan faced 102 balls in his innings and hit 11 boundaries while Kohli's unbeaten knock came from just

66 balls with the help of 18 fours and a six. Captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni (25 not out) hit the winning runs - a two -- as India reached 351 for four to bring the capacity crowd to raptures and the home team players hugging each other at the dressing room. With the scores locked 2-2, the seventh ODI in Bangalore on Saturday will serve as the summit showdown of the series which has already seen a phenomenal 2565 runs scored so far (excluding the 295 scored by Australia in the abandoned fourth match at Ranchi). India stuttered a bit towards the end as Suresh Raina (16) and struggling Yuvraj Singh (0) were out in the same over -- 43rd -- but Kohli, who had hit the fastest-ever 100 off just 52 balls by an Indian in Jaipur and an equally unruffled Dhoni saw them home with an unbroken partnership of 61 for the fifth wicket. The game looked on a knife's edge even after the great start given by Dhawan and Rohit -who shared 178 runs from 29.3 overs for the opening wicket -but Kohli tore into the visitors' bowling attack to swing the game in India's favour. Dhawan was lucky to be let off when on 19 off James Faulkner at fly-gully by Glenn Maxwell and then survived a difficult chance after reaching his 50. In between these two escapes and earlier too, he got his runs mainly by using his bottom hand to hit square and behind the wicket on both sides and reached his half century with a run-a-ball effort. Rohit, who made an unbeaten
NAGPUR: India all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja touched a personal landmark of 100 wickets in One-Day Internationals as he dismissed two Australian batsmen to complete his century of wickets. Jadeja, who was expensive and was carted around by Australian captain George Bailey and Shane Watson grabbed both his wickets in the last over of the innings. The Saurashtra-born player made his debut against Sri Lanka at Colombo on February 8, 2009 and the milestone came in his 85th ODI game. The left-arm spinner was wicket-less in his first nine overs before dismissing Bailey for 156 and Mitchell Johnson for a duck off the second and fourth ball in the last over of the Australian innings to end up with figures of 2 for 68.
141 in the earlier successful run chase at Jaipur, started off cautiously against the medium pacers and then was severe on Maxwell whom he hit for two sixes in the 29th over and then fell while trying to repeat the feat in the next over. When Rohit exited, India needed 173 from 183 balls and Kohli started off positively by striking Xavier Doherty for a six and two fours in 33rd over. Dhawan and Kohli brought the hosts 117 runs adrift of the target in the last 96 balls with a stand of 56 when the left handed opener departed off the left-arm pacer James Faulker. Kohli, India's most consistent batsman in the series, and Raina got involved in a partnership of 54 to bring the home team close to victory. Brief Scores: Australia 350/6 in 50 overs [George Bailey 156, Shane Watson 102] lost to India 351/4 in 49.3 overs [Shikhar Dhawan 100, Virat Kohli 115 not out] by six wickets.
SYDNEY: Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting said he was "offended" after Mark Taylor blasted his feud with Michael Clarke, saying it should have stayed in the dressing room. Current skipper Clarke was reportedly furious when he learned ex-captain Ponting's autobiography, released last week, contained concerns about his then-deputy's attitude. The book also offers an unfavourable appraisal of Clarke's ill-fated relationship with bikini model Lara Bingle, which ended in 2010 when he flew back from a tour of New Zealand to sort out his private life. Clarke bristled at a press conference yesterday when asked for his reaction to Ponting's comments. "Ricky said that did he? Well, Ricky has my number," he said. Ponting reportedly responded that Clarke "won't read anything in the book that he wouldn't have known about himself or how I felt about it around the team".
Tendulkar’s retirement a big loss to world cricket: Saqlain
NEW DELHI: Former Pakistan spinner Saqlain Mushtaq said Sachin Tendulkar's retirement from Test cricket is a "big loss" to world cricket. "Sachin's retirement is a big loss to world cricket. He is not only an amazing player but a great human being as well. I have a lot of respect for him," Saqlain told PTI Bhasha. Tendulkar will bid adieu to the game after playing his 200th Test against the West Indies in Mumbai next month. Saqlain, who would always be remembered for his 10wicket match haul that was instrumental in his team handing a 12-run defeat to India in the 1999 Chennai Test match, said it was an "honour" playing against Tendulkar and he enjoyed bowling to the legendary batsman. "I am lucky to have played against him. It's been an honour to have bowled to Sachin... Sometimes I got the better of him," he said.
Ind-SA tour to begin with ODI series
MUMBAI: The Indian cricket team's tour of South Africa, which was finalised after weeks of deliberations and controversies, will kick off with a three-match one-day series starting December 5 in Johannesburg. After the ODIs, India will play the first Test of the two-match series also at Johannesburg (December 1822) while the second game will be played from December 26-30 at Durban, a BCCI media release said. The tour, which has been the subject of much wrangling between the two boards -- BCCI and Cricket South Africa, will also have a two-day practice match between the touring side and the SA Invitation XI beginning December 14 at Benoni.

UMBAI: Girls’ top seed Akanksha Nitture and boys fourth seed Faiz Nasyam registered contrasting victories to emerge champions, in the Khar Gymkhana Maharashtra State Ranking Under-10 Junior Tennis Tournament. Nitture, of New Horizon Public School, New Panvel overcame second seed Smita Walhekar 5-3, 4-0 in the girls’ final, while Nasyam upset top seed Leston Vaz 4-0, 4-1 in the boys’ championship round. Nine-yearold Nitture, who had entered her maiden under-12 final and finished runner-up in the Maharashtra State & All India Talent Series at the same venue in November last year, ignored the early challenge from a spirited Walhekar in an exciting opening set before winning the second without dropping a game. “I took time to settle down at the start of the match,” said Nitture, who also was the under-10 runner-up in the Maharashtra State Lawn Tennis Association tournament last year. “I struggled a bit and used my experience in the end to win the first set narrowly. Winning the first set was crucial because it gave me the confidence in the second, which I won easily. I am strong on the backhand and used it to my advantage.” Apart from the rigours of training long hours at the Karnala Sports Academy, Panvel, Nitture, accompanied by her mother, also endured the energy-sapping six-hour train journey from Panvel to Khar and back. “Winning the title was worth the effort,” she added. Faiz Nasyam announced his arrival on the circuit when he prevailed over favourite Leston Vaz. Though the diminutive Vaz lost in straight sets, he battled with determination against a taller opponent. “I think my height is a disadvantage at the moment. I played against a stronger and taller opponent and I will have to work harder to make amends,” said Vaz.

ARCELONA: Cesc Fabregas scored two goals and played a part in Alexis Sanchez's opener to steer Barcelona to a 3-0 victory at Celta Vigo and keep the pressure on the Spanish league leader's title rivals. The defending champion's 10th win in 11 rounds yesterday, provisionally lifted it four points clear of Atletico Bilbao and nine points above Real Madrid before they play matches later this week. While Barcelona eased to another victory, crosstown rival Espanyol drew 0-0 at home with Malaga. The two Catalan clubs will meet on Friday in a city derby at Camp Nou. Barcelona dominated early in Vigo and Alexis put the visitors ahead in the ninth minute when he pounced on the rebound of a shot by Fabregas after the former Arsenal star had stolen the ball deep in Celta's half. The Chile forward's six goals are second only to Lionel Messi's eight for the team's leading scorer in league play. After Celta had pushed forward in search of an equaliser late in the first half with Charles and Rafina, who is on loan from Barcelona, both going close, Fabregas put the game away three minutes after the restart. With Celta again caught outnumbered after losing the ball, Messi drew in the defense and slipped the ball over for Fabre-

Good to have a nine-wicket haul: Harbhajan
N
tained that longer I will bowl the better I will get. It was a good wicket to bowl in Mohali," the 34year-old, who has played 101 Test matches, said. Punjab notched up an innings and 48-run victory over Odisha with a bonus point in a group A match. Harbhajan, who led North Zone in the Duleep Trophy unfortunately missed out on crucial match time as both the semifinal and the final were rained out. This was ideally his first longer-format game in as many as eight months where he got a chance to bowl substantial amount of overs. For the national selectors, Harbhajan's performance would surely keep them interested with a long season ahead. "The ball came out well off my hand and the feel was good."
EW DELHI: Harbhajan Singh served a timely reminder to the national selection committee with a match haul of nine wickets in the opening Ranji Trophy encounter against Odisha in Mohali and the senior off-spinner is hoping to get better as the season progresses. "It feels good to start off the season on a positive note. I hope to get better with each and every match from here," Harbhajan told PTI from Mohali. Harbhajan finished with match figures of nine for 137, including a six-wicket haul in the fist innings at the PCA Stadium in Mohali. "Obviously it acts as a confidence booster when you get five wickets in an innings. What makes me happier is the fact that I have been able to bowl 54 overs in the match. As I have always main-
gas to drill it under goalkeeper Yoel Rodriguez. Messi laid the ball off again for Fabregas to unleash a shot that hit the crossbar and ricocheted off the outstretched Rodriguez before crossing the line in the 54th. Celta's Manuel "Nolito" Agudo almost got a consolation goal in the 67th when he sent his free kick off the goalframe. Messi, who was oddly subdued in Barcelona's 2-1 win over Madrid on Saturday, searched for an elusive goal, often ignoring teammates in better positions to score. "We played well, together as one unit. We played a complete game," Fabregas said. Atletico visits Granada tomorrow after Madrid hosts Sevilla. Barcelona appears to have lost Adriano to another muscle injury. The injury-prone Brazilian defender grimaced as he was substituted in the 31st. On the bench, he taped an ice pack to his left thigh. Celta coach Luis Enrique played for Barcelona from 19962004 before returning as its second-team coach in 2008. Enrique greeted many of the players in the Barcelona dugout, some of whom were old teammates like Xavi Hernandez, before the match with a series of hugs. "Our goal was to try and complicate their lives and we had the chance to do that in the first half, but that ended with their second goal early in the second half," Enrique said.
Tendulkar gifts himself, says Jadeja
LAHLI, HARYANA: After Sachin Tendulkar stood like a rock to help Mumbai cross the line in his last Ranji Trophy match here today, Haryana captain and former India opener Ajay Jadeja said the retiring legend himself makes his own gift. Mumbai players have been saying prior to this match that they wish to gift Tendulkar a victory as parting shot. "He himself gifts himself (referring to Tendulkar's 79-run innings) ... His knock made a difference, whoever has seen the game would know. He was not out till the end ... That means he would have made more runs if required," Jadeja told reporters after Tendulkar almost singlehandedly guided Mumbai to victory scoring an unbeaten 79.
Ranji gave Sachin good practice ahead of Test farewell: Zaheer L
AHLI, HARYANA: As Sachin Tendulkar signed off his Ranji Trophy career on a winning note, Mumbai captain Zaheer Khan said the veteran batsman's five-hour vigil in the second innings against Haryana has given him the muchneeded practice ahead of his farewell Test series against the West Indies next month. The retiring legend almost singlehandedly guided Mumbai to a four-wicket victory, scoring an unbeaten 79, in one of the most keenly followed matches in the history of Ranji Trophy. "It's important for Sachin and considering the two Tests against the West In-
dies next month, this has given him much-needed practice. And remember, Haryana has got a good attack and they bowled a disciplined attack," Zaheer told reporters after the match. Tendulkar, 40, will be walking into international sunset after the rubber against the Caribbean side, and Zaheer has been associated with the veteran for almost a decade and a half. "It's very difficult to sum up my association with Sachin in one minute. It's been very special, his records speak volumes of the man. He has
truly been a master. We just want him to enjoy the last two Tests, the way he has always enjoyed...Make the most of it." The left-arm pacer is on a comeback trail and seemed hopeful of returning to the Indian team. "I am trying to do whatever is in my hand. I have got good match practice by playing the two India A matches. I am getting better... Bowling fitness is something I am working on. I am feeling confident, it's just about spending more and more time on the field. Match practice is the best practice as it helps the overall game," he said.

MASTER’S MASTERCLASS Tendulkar bids adieu to domestic cricket in style; score unbeaten 79 under pressure
L
AHLI, HARYANA: Sachin Tendulkar's farewell game in domestic cricket ended in a manner befitting his iconic stature, as the retiring legend singlehandedly guided Mumbai to a fourwicket win over Haryana in one of the most keenly followed match in the history of Ranji Trophy. Requiring 39 more runs to win with four wickets in hand on the fourth and final day, Tendulkar went on to make a calculated 175ball unbeaten 79, building his innings in the manner that has been the hallmark of his later years. The stay in the middle also ensured Tendulkar warmed up for next month's Test series against the West Indies, which will culminate with the second and his landmark 200th Test in Mumbai, where he will bring the curtain down on
his glorious 24-year tryst with international cricket. After a series of shifts in momentum over the past three days, it was Mumbai who had the last laugh, thanks largely to the relentless perseverance showed by Tendulkar. Starting the day at 201 for six, Tendulkar, overnight on 55, guided Dhawal Kulkarni (16 not out) to the last run that came when the young pacer hit Mohit Sharma for a boundary, much to the delight of his Mumbai teammates who had planned to gift the veteran a win in his last game for the state side. The hordes of home spectators who had trooped into the Chaudhary Bansi Lal Cricket Stadium, didn't mind either as it was Tendulkar who was at the forefront of this successful chase. Living their own Tendulkar moment, the
heads totting the small stands fervently cheered his every run, and got an adrenaline rush the only time the ball reached the fence today from the master's willow. The standing ovation as he walked out to bat was followed by another round of guard of honour, with some of the Haryana players even saluting the champion batsman while he walked on to bat for one last time in domestic cricket. The routine being repeated after the match seemed appropriate. Tendulkar being lifted on the shoulder of his teammates was also to be expected. Though he hit just one boundary today, it was worth it. As Harshal Patel ran in, Tendulkar positioned himself perfectly before punching the fast bowler through backward point. All in all he struck six boundaries
in the innings. The innings was in stark contrast to the one he played against the same side some 22 years ago, in the final of the Ranji Trophy at the Wankhede Stadium where he smashed Kapil Dev and co to all corners of the ground. Today's knock was more about grafting. The defence was tight, the big stride forward gave the picture of a man in total control of the situation, and then there were the trademark backfoot punches through cover off fast bowlers. He also scored quite a few runs through tucks to the square leg region, nudges towards midwicket besides sprinting singles to midon and mid-off. Brief Scores: Haryana 134 & 241 lost to Mumbai 136 & 240/6 in 93.0 overs [Sachin Tendulkar 79] by four wickets.
Hope I can live up to fans’ expectations against WI: Sachin L
AHLI, HARYANA: After guiding Mumabi to a Ranji win over Haryana in his final domestic game, retiring Indian batsman Sachin Tendulkar today said he is now eagerly looking forward to his farewell Test series against the West Indies, which starts in Kolkata on November 6. Tendulkar will bring the curtain down on his glorious 24-year tryst with international cricket against the West Indies after playing his landmark 200th Test in Mumbai from November 14-18. "It will be a good series. They (West Indies) are a good side, something that I'll be looking forward to...My last couple of Test matches. I hope it produces good cricket and lives up to the expectations of all my well wishers," Tendulkar said after guiding Mumbai to a four-wicket win over Haryana.
Tendulkar warmed up for the Test series against the West Indies with a calculated 175-ball unbeaten 79 in Mumbai's challenging chase of 240 runs in the second innings at the lively Chaudhary Bansi Lal Cricket Stadium wicket here. "It was a challenging wicket. It had a lot for the bowlers but it was fun to bat on this wicket. The bowlers were getting assistance from the wicket so it was not easy to score runs," the retiring legend said after playing his last Ranji Trophy game. "240 was a big total to chase. The outfield was also on the slower side. 240 looked like 280 to chase on this wicket. This is just the kind of outing I was looking for. Haryana played very good cricket. All credit to them for putting up a good challenge and making it a memorable contest," he said.
RAJKOT: A fighting century by Rajesh Bishnoi went in vain as Saurashtra thrashed Rajasthan by an innings and 31 runs to win with a bonus point on the fourth and final day of their Group B Ranji Trophy match here. Having declared their first innings on 475 for seven, Saurashtra had bundled out Rajasthan for a paltry 136 in their first essay. In their second innings, Rajasthan were all out for 308. Resuming at 147 for four, the visitors' hopes of saving the match relied on the overnight pair of Hrishikesh Kanitkar and Rajesh Bishnoi. The duo started the day on a positive note and gave a glimpse of hope to Rajasthan as they added 91 runs together for fifth wicket. Bishnoi, having resumed on two, went on to score 106.
Jharkhand and Delhi share points as match abandoned
JAMSHEDPUR: Hosts Jharkhand and Delhi shared a point each after the four-day Group A Ranji Trophy match was abandoned without a ball being bowled on the concluding day at Keenan stadium here. The play was not possible in the last four days due to sluggish outfield even though there was no rain since Sunday. The umpires inspected the wicket last at 12 noon and called off the match. Meanwhile, a moderate crowd, which had turned up to have glimpses of the star cricketers such as Delhi captain and out- offavour Indian opener Gautam Gambhir and Virendra Sehwag, got irritated and indulged in mild stone pelting, forcing the police to intervene, after the match was called off.
MP grab three points in drawn Ranji match against Railways
INDORE: A strong batting performance by the middle-order after being forced to follow on helped Railways avoid defeat but Madhya Pradesh walked away with three points due to their first innings lead in the drawn Ranji Trophy Group B match. In reply to a mammoth 510, Railways were bowled out for 335 in their first innings and were 235 for six in their second innings when stumps were drawn on the fourth and final day at Holkar Cricket Stadium here. Madhya Pradesh medium-pacer Ishwar Pandey, who grabbed seven wickets yesterday, took the tally to eight in the first innings before grabbing three in the Railways' second essay to be the pick of the bowlers. When they took the field for their second innings, Railways were trailing MP by 175 runs.
Punjab thrash Odisha by an innings and 48 runs in Ranji
MOHALI: A disciplined bowling display helped Punjab dismiss Odisha for 307 in their second innings and notch up a convincing an innings and 48-run victory with a bonus point in a group A Ranji Trophy match on the fourth and final day. After bundling out Odisha for 205 in their first innings, Punjab had posted a mammoth 560 for six declared. Resuming at 110 for two in their second innings, Odisha needed 245 more runs to make Punjab bat again but skipper Harbhajan Singh led a disciplined bowling attack with a three-wicket haul to scuttle the visitors' plans. While Harbhajan returned with figures of three for 83 in 25.4 overs, Siddarth Kaul and Manpreet Gony took two wickets each, while Sandeep Sharma, who had scalped the two Odisha openers, added another wicket to his kitty.Harbhajan's total nine-wicket haul in the match will hold him in good stead when the selectors meet to pick the squad for the two-match Test series against the West Indies to be played next month.
