Girl musters courage and files complaint about being raped by accused who had gang-raped photo-journalist; same modus operandi was used

n a shocking development to the gangrape case of a photo-journalist on August 22, a 19-year-old girl approached the police on Tuesday claiming to be a victim of gang-rape committed by the arrested accused. According to the police, three among the five arrested accused, had raped the girl on July 31. These three have been identified as Kasim Bengali, Salim Ansari and Vijay Jadhav, informed the police. The remaining two, Siraj Khan and a minor, were not involved in the gang-rape of July 31. On Tuesday, police personnel from N M Joshi Marg police station arrested an accused, who is a minor. This is the fourth

accused in the July 31 gang-rape, who was arrested from Dhobi Ghat area of South Mumbai. However, Ashfaq Dawood Sheikh alias Babu, the fifth accused, is still at large. As per the girl’s statement to the police, she was raped by five accused on July 31, said the police. The girl was raped inside the Shakti Mills compound at Mahalakshmi, the same place where the young photojournalist was raped recently, added the police.

Educational institutions have started asking students to submit a copy of their Aadhaar cards, in order to maintain a detailed record of them. The State Education Department, in turn has asked educational institutions to make this submission compulsory. The steel rods are missing at many places, and since the height of the fencing is four feet, children can easily go through the gap and fall a straight 30 feet on to the road below. Even if an adult fails to pay proper attention on the skywalk, he or she may easily slip past the gaps, of which there are many and fall all the way down. Someone has tried to close some of the gaps in the railings by tying bamboo poles but the job is flimsy, hence the risk factor remains. Several other gaps remain open.

n Monday at around 8:30 pm, Samana Iqbal Ansari (26), who had completed her term of pregnancy, was in a train on her way to get admitted at Nair Hospital when she suddenly went into labour. With hardly any help available from the railway staff, she delivered at Andheri station. Ansari had boarded the train at Malad along with her mother, and went into labour as the train neared Andheri, so decided to get off and go to a private hospital in Andheri for her delivery. She also urged women who are victims of rape to come forward and file complaint. “Women should come forward and register an FIR so that they can get justice. The Home department has instructed police that if a victim wants to file FIR through phone, they will have to register it,” she said.

The break-in was discovered only on Tuesday morning by the temple priest,

Both had earlier been arrested by the Mumbai crime branch for their alleged role in the murder of gangster Farid Tanasha at his residence in Chembur in 2010. It was Khan who was first arrested by the CID in this case and the interrogation revealed that he and Shankar had followed Bhosale’s car and opened fire on him. Shankar was then lodged in Taloja Jail after being arrested in the Tanasha murder case. A CID team, led by deputy superintendent Mahesh Thite, took Shankar’s custody from the Taloja Jail and produced him in the magistrate’s court in Pune. The CID also named Chhota Rajan and gangsters Vijay Shetty, Sanjay Yadav and Rajesh Yadav as accused in the case. It may be recalled that the CID had not named Rajan in the earlier chargesheet of 2009 which it had filed in the case.

So, Bhosale along with his lawyers Manish Bhore and Anant Shargavkar, approached the Bombay High Court with a petition stating that CID’s chargesheet didn’t include the names of businessman S. K. Agarwal and gangster Chhota Rajan who, according to witnesses, was involved in the case. Out of the 289 members of the legislative assembly, in the end 273 MLAs voted in the elections. To make matters worse for the ruling alliance, two MLAs cast invalid votes, further reducing the number of valid votes to 271 votes and bringing the required quota of votes to win, down to 136 votes. In the final result, the NCPs Dhananjay Munde polled 165 votes, 14 votes less than the 179 votes that the Congress-NCP had in its kitty. As many as 18 MLAs did not cast their ballot which included 12 MNS MLAs. What is remarkable for Kakde was that despite contesting as an Independent candidate with the BJP-

IN a country where self proclaimed godmen, superstitious beliefs and measures in the form of black magic etc, attract millions of followers, it is indeed felt that a suitable bill or a law is required to be passed against many supersitious practices, self proclaimed babas and tantriks who indulge in torture and money making tactics. I feel that this matter is very delicate and that this should not be initiated only against a paritcular religion or sect. This should be applicable wherever there are superstitious practices. Three decades later, he remains passionate about teaching despite his success in the journalistic and literary world. Mathematics teacher at the age of 16! What did that feel like? It felt very good, if truth be told. I was earning money and that was why I began to teach. I needed a way to fund my library, to buy all the books I wanted to buy. And so when my uncle Joseph Tellis, then a teacher at Campion School, Mumbai, went on a vacation to Goa, he left me with a few of his students who I began to teach. And their mothers sent me on to other students and before I knew it, I was off and running.

Teaching was one way to earn money and when my father died — I was 21 years old at the time — it seemed like a good

way to keep the family going. I was finishing a law degree at that time and thought that I would start working as soon as I was done. I stood sixth in the University of Mumbai but when I went looking for a job, I was told at one firm that I would have to deposit money and then would be paid from the interest. At another firm, I was told that I would be paid a pittance. I could not afford it and so abandoned the idea of a career in law without a second thought. Along the way, as I was teaching, I also began writing for the newspapers, thanks to the intervention of an inspired friend, Rashmi Paklhivala nee Hegde.

What made you take up law? You know, if you win enough debates and you speak well and you think on your feet, someone is likely to say, ‘You should be a lawyer.’ And when your parents ask you what you want to do after your duffer degree, you begin to say, ‘Law’ without too much conviction in your voice. But if you say something often enough you find yourself believing it too. And then three years have passed and you have mugged up enough to sit for eighteen examination papers and you have written enough to convince someone you know the law and there you are. One more degree. One more lawyer. Did you ever think of giving it up when you achieved success as a writer and journalist? Every year, journalists go into the editor’s cabin or sit with HR heads and argue for raises but they never ask whether they can raise the rates for the freelance journalists they rely on when they are commissioning. I have written about this before and posted on Facebook about this. So much for solidarity! As long as I was a freelance journalist, there was no way I could pay the bills even if I wrote, as I often did, a piece a day. So I never thought of giving up teaching mathematics as long as I was a freelance journalist. At the age of thirty though, I had taught for fourteen years. I was beginning to take writing seriously as a career and I was even teaching journalism at the Sophia Institute for Social Communications Media. When Hutokshi Doctor offered me a job at the Sunday Review of the Times of India, I took it. It meant a huge reduction in how much I was earning but I could still manage. How do students react to you when they learn of your success? Do you think they take you more seriously or less because of it? Before they come into class, students like the

idea of a teacher who has won a National Award or whatever. When they are actually in class, that fades away. What remains is whether the person there is doing a good job teaching or not. So I think my students will always be happy for me when they read a good review of something I have written or when they hear of an award or something like that. But the batch you’re teaching? They’re only interested in whether you’re making as much of an effort as you should.

Today, would you consider teaching your calling or journalism? Or even writing for that matter? I don’t like labels. Labels turn prescriptive. And prescriptions turn into restrictions. So I prefer to say I’m Jerry Pinto and I teach when I walk into a class at SCM and I write when I’m sitting at my desk or at my computer and I’m an editor when I am called on to edit and I’m a child rights activist when I walk into a board meeting of MelJol. I remain the same person, with the same commitments, the same enthusiasms, the same failings (a quick temper, for instance) and the same weaknesses. And there are mornings when I would rather lie in bed and be a writer and say to myself ‘I am thinking about the right adjective just now, please don’t disturb’. But it is a Thursday morning and I have to be in class at eight and I have to be on time, or how can I teach my students punctuality. And, if I can’t teach my students to be punctual, how can I teach them journalism?! So I lug myself out of bed and make a dash for it and wish that the world could be organized according to my moods.

What was the inspiration behind ‘Em and the Big Hoom’? I don’t remember who first said, “Write what you know” for a first novel. Or did s/he say it for all novels? I don’t know. This is what I know. This is what I wrote.

How is it taking social communications and journalism lessons for the youth? It’s great fun. It’s heart-breaking. It’s magic. It’s misery. It is everything you want it to be on the days when you and your class are working together. It is a tragedy on other days, when students are fractious or tired or bored or whatever it is students are when they’re not being students but just being young people with lots of energy for Facebook and very little energy for reading.

How do you view teaching and journalism as professions in comparison to each other? Good question. There’s a measure of didacticism which is part of both professions but you let it get out of hand in either one and it’s curtains for you and for your aim. Both professions attract the oddly-sized, the prickly pears of the world. That’s what makes the teachers common room and the press club such interesting places. What makes you want to teach assuming you don't have to? As for whether I have to or not, I have to work for a living. But this week, for instance, my students will submit their long-form essays. That’s five thousand words each from 40 students. That’s 200,000 words to read and edit and assess and grade. There are easier ways to make a living. So I teach because it’s my way of paying back.

NIEM show reaches a new high

I met some seriously interesting people thanks to journalism. I got to talk to scientists and poets and authors and inventors because I was a journalist. I got to poke around and ask questions. I got to think and to read. I got to read and got paid to write reviews and got to keep the books. I want to impart some of that excitement to my students. I want them to be freed too, to be liberated from the constructions and constrictions with which they define themselves. I don’t know if I succeed. I try though.

Do you think students have changed over the years? Do they expect you to have answers to everything? No two students are the same. No two batches are the same. And my hat, when have students ever believed that their teachers have the answers to everything? At the post-graduation stage, they make disbelief in authority into a precondition for existence. And that’s the way it should be. Otherwise how would they become journalists? How would they challenge authority? How would they ask, cui bono? How would they look chief ministers in the eye and ask difficult questions? How would they be the voice of the voiceless? How would they defend democracy for all of us?

Do you think the youth will ever be inclined towards teaching? There will always be some people who will take up teaching. There will always be some people who will take up journalism. They are among the lowest paid of all professions, according to the International Labour Organisation. I think it takes a special genius for poverty to choose both.

Do you think teaching has evolved since you started? Is this evolving for better or for worse? Teaching as a profession is better paid now than it ever was. That’s good news for those who are inside the system. As for freelance teachers, they still have to struggle for raises. But at the end of it all, when you see a byline in a newspaper and you recognize the quiet student who has now started on her way; when you get an email from a student thanking you because she’s now at Columbia; when another student gets an award and another makes a lovely documentary, you know why you were there, setting assignments, correcting them and feeling your way as you taught something that you were still in the process of learning. (I try not to say, “She’s my student, you know” because I don’t want to usurp their achievements but I say it to myself and hug it to my heart.)

With the youth forming a majority of India’s population today, it is no wonder that we see them taking over most professions. Teaching, traditionally considered the stronghold of the older and more experienced lot, is no exception to this trend. This Teachers’ Day, we have a couple of young teachers speaking to Vinaya Patil and Claudelle Monis about teaching the youth. What got you into this profession and when did you first think of it? This is one profession where you get to interact with the youth. You can forever stay young at heart with this profession, considering the amount of time you spend with the students every day. It keeps you on your toes. This idea got me into this profession. I, however, do not exactly remember when I thought of taking it up as a full-time profession. I think the idea just grew inside me and here I am today.

SHAGUN MATTOO, 26, BMS LECTURER, BHAVAN’S COLLEGE What got you into this profession and when did you first think of it? I’ve been teaching at Bhavan’s for a year and a half now, but teaching was not my first career choice. I’ve done my Masters in HR and the logical conclusion to this degree is a job in HR. However, I was not keen on entering the corporate world and that was when my mum, who’s been a teacher for almost 10 years, told me to try teaching. Did you always want to teach the youth or did you ever think of teaching in school? My initial plan was to teach kindergarten kids since I was apprehensive about teaching college kids. When I told my mum what I was worried about, she and other teachers who taught degree college courses, spoke to me and told me that teaching college students is much easier than handling children. Once I had the right motivation, I started lecturing and realised that they were right. How do you connect with your students? I prefer being their friend.I don’t like a formal learning environment. I enter class and give my students 15 minutes to share their views with me. Once they’ve settled down, I start with an interactive session and ensure that the entire lecture has sufficient activity to keep them engrossed.

Have you ever been taken lightly because of your age? I’ve never been taken lightly because of my age simply because I set the ground rules when I first walked into class. I told them I’m not a ‘strict’ teacher, but I’m not one to sit quiet either if they try to take me lightly. Since I made myself clear on the first day, I’ve never had a problem. Do you think more youngsters should take up teaching? I think more youngsters ,especially women, should take up teaching since it is profesionally fulfilling and gives you a freedom that few other professions do. It leaves you with enough time for yourself and your family, something that corporate jobs limit.

The environment around students is changing with every passing day and the senior teachers might not necessarily be able to understand this change and thus might not relate to the students at all levels. Dr. Preeti Kochar, a dentist and belly dance instructor at the Pulse Studio tells Naressa Coutinho why belly dancing can only fit well as a part-time career option parallel to a more mainstream career.

he new millennium saw the famous Latina Shakira introduce a style of dance that became viral with her album Laundry Service and her Arabian belly dance moves in ‘Whenever Wherever’. Belly dance or Raqs Baladi as known to the Middle East, became a craze then and even today many women flock to belly dance studios to learn to shimmy and discipline their hips. “It’s a liberating dance form for girls”, says Dr. Preeti Kochar, a practicing dentist and belly dance instructor at Pulse Studio, “You don’t need a partner nor a group to dance; all you need to do is nurture a love for your own body and to respect it the way it is”. The comforting fact being that belly dance doesn’t demand a size zero but welcomes women of all age groups, shapes and sizes. However, over the years, Dr. Preeti has seen the dance form reach saturation and this becomes the ultimate deciding factor when you look at it from a career perspective. Louder than before: Dream Theater’s Enemy Inside

Progressive rock giant Dream Theater is at it again, this time armed with an arsenal of ideas from new drummer Mike Mangini in the single ‘The Enemy Inside’. The first single from their 12th studio album, Dream Theater keeps you wanting more. Right from the Harsh Godbole start, ‘The Enemy K J Somaiya College Inside’ leaves the listener stunned and James LaBrie’s vocals keep you in a state of anxiety as the band explores the genre of Thrash metal. Softer keyboard and bass overlays add a different perspective through the song. Many would argue that the band has gone slightly stale with their recent albums, and this unfortunately reflects in the initial guitar sequences and a later instrumental section. On the other hand, John Petrucci manages to pull off a stupefying solo around the end. In a nutshell, this is a treat for all progressive rock fans.

ELECRAMA 2014, the world’s largest power transmission & distribution (T&D) confluence to be hosted by IEEMA early next year at Bangalore city, will unleash among various other concurrent events, The Engineer Infinite (EI), a platform for engineering students to showcase their innovative projects aimed at providing smart and simple solutions in the electrical energy sector. The Indian Electrical and Electronics Manufacturers' Association (IEEMA) will once again hunt for India’s greatest innovation talent in the electrical sector during the event spread over five days between January 8 - 12, 2014. The pan-India competition comprising undergraduate, post-graduate and diploma students from colleges covering Electrotech subjects will have to submit their abstract online before September 22. While the branches in traditional Electrical and Mechanical Sciences are already a part of the branches eligible to participate, Engineer Infinite 2014 will include Computer Science and Information Technology branches as well – recognising the increasing role of Information Technology in the Electrical Energy sector. Projects qualifying for the grant list will be provided a financial grant of Rs.12,500 while each student member would be provided with a fixed financial subsidy to assist them in meeting the expenses for travel, stay, board and local conveyance to attend ELECRAMA 2014 for the display of their project. One faculty guide (if registered as part of project team) per selected project team would be provided with a fixed financial subsidy. The winner of the Engineer Infinite event will get a cash reward of Rs. 2 lakh, while two winners in the second position would receive Rs. 1 lakh each. Food testing during new menu launches and food festivals is the best part here but the job keeps me on toes at work so I can save on gymming what with all the running done. My job profile is suited in any industry, as the work is almost similar once you understand the product, market and target audience. It is not monotonous and it interests me because every time you have to come up with fresh ideas. I have handled media clients so it was very exciting as I used to get the scoop for my friends from other industries. Best moments were the involvement in pre-production, production and post-production of a TVC shoot and also getting featured in it; yes I got a chance to be a model in the TVC and print shoot of

One of the best things I learnt is not to sit with problems, but to do something about it; discuss or at least make your team aware of it. My education has helped me in many ways. I am an engineer graduate because my parents wanted me to do engineering. During my college days, I was actively involved in cultural fests and presentations which helped me in gaining a lot of confidence and developing my per-

Also, people skills which are very much important in any field as maintaining healthy relations and being a good listener really does help in growing. <<Sunil Anand When I was out of college I was not sure what to pursue as a career and was certain about not getting into engineering again. By a friend’s reference, I got a job of Marketing and Operations in a tourism-ground handling firm, later through socializing, I learnt about advertising and the job profile known as ‘Client Servicing’. During client servicing days, interaction with clients turned into friendships which helped me understand their exact profiles and what I would have to do to get on to the clients’ side. Thus, now I am at the clients’ side, handling 360 degrees of marketing communications for brands. Training days are the best time of life. After my graduation in engineering I worked as a fresher for a digital media agency, print media agency and handled the marketing profile too. These areas were very new for me as I did not have a base in mass communications. My seniors saw the urge for learning in me and with each new task added more responsibilities which helped me understand the different verticals of marketing. I thank them for being great mentors and letting me make mistakes so that I could learn from them and improve. Talking about creative agency days, I worked as a client servicing person in agencies, who handles clients and is the face of the agency. So as to balance this act, my seniors taught me to maintain a task list and

a job status report, research and survey work, management of resources, vendors, and prominently time management. Apart from this, the daily brainstorming sessions developed a creative streak in me. I learnt how important and different various types of communications can be. Being on the clients’ side now, I understand why my clients use to be impatient about the jobs. The amount of work put in by the art, copy and studio departments is commendable. I did all media related studies after graduation. While working, I completed Diploma in Advertising and Media from Welingkars and PG Diploma in Advertising and Media from Mumbai University. The fees are very nominal and anyone with passion and who is ready to compromise on weekends can do this course with ease. Depending upon how well you crack the interview, good communication and confidence is what is required in my field. The starting salary can be Rs.10 to15 thousand per month. It takes about three to four years to become a professional. The salary goes up to a seven-figure salary per annum, if you have a good CV. The best part about the job is that you are surrounded by fun-loving, smart and party animals. The job keeps you always updated with the happenings around the globe. You can also be a freelance consultant on marketing planning and strategy or handle PR assignments. The difficulties are about getting the right opportunity and the right people. My advice for those who want to take up my profession is Understand the industry, get educated and groom yourself; always be presentable, be a good listener, work hard and network, network, network. Grass-root exposure with international perspectives T

he 2013 edition of Tata ISES culminated with a contingent of 20 international students – seven from University of California, Berkley, USA; one from the University of California, Davis, USA; seven from the London School of Economics & Political Science, UK; and five from the University of Cambridge, UK – completing their two-month experiential internship in the ongoing Corporate Sustainability (CS) projects of the Tata companies in India. The batch of Tata ISES 2013, worked hands-on on the community initiatives of the Tata companies and entities like Tata Steel, Tata Chemicals, Tata Motors, Titan, Tata

Teleservices, Tata Capital, Tata Coffee, Tata Quality Management Services, Tata Medical Center and the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust for a period of two-months. The areas of their projects ranged from the impact assessment of CS programmes at various Tata companies to sustainable livelihoods; perceptions about infection control at hospitals; safe drinking water; affirmative action; climate change programme evaluations; and road maps for a carbon neutral village (Please find attached Annexure 1: Tata ISES – 2013 project list). The programme structure of Tata ISES 2013 provided the interns with

grass-root level exposure to India and at the same time brought international perspectives and practices to these projects at Tata companies, promoting international understanding. One of the interns, Peter Myers, currently pursuing a M.A. in Development Practice from UC Berkley undertook a project at Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and worked in the district of Murshidabad, West Bengal with under-privileged children to gauge the impact of Integrated approach to Technology in Education (ITE) being deployed by the Trust with the objective of bridging the digital divide and

improving learning processes among the ‘have nots’ of the society. Describing his experience Myers said, “I got a real flavour in India for what local governments have thecapacity to provide for their people, and how that gap needs to be filled by private industry, NGOs, and organisations like the Tata trusts. Vital changes like education reform, if left only to the government, will not reach the current generation fast enough. The private sector is hugely important for helping that change, and the Tata trusts are a major part of the effort”. He further said, “My early career in international development has

already taken me to several places around the world. The American band will have Neal Morse (vocals, guitars, synth), Mike Portnoy (drums, vocals), Randy George (bass, vocals), Eric Gillette (vocals, bass), and Bill Hubauer (synth, vocals). The band led by Neal Morse is yet another project of the popular guitarist and his partner from Flying Colors and Transatlantic Mike Portnoy. This will be the band’s first performance in India exclusively for Mood Indigo this December. When asked about the reasons behind their choice, Darpan Sanghavi, the Pronites Head says, “Our ideology this year was to get a band that interests all types of music listeners. With the Neal Morse band and Mike Portnoy coming together, we believe we have done precisely that”. Mike Portnoy, born in

EW DELHI: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh leaves for St. Petersburg on Wednesday to attend the eighth G20 Summit during which he is expected to push for a coordinated plan to avoid disruption in India and other large developing economies by imminent phasing out of fiscal stimulus by US Federal Reserve. While the dispute between Russia and the US over the conflict in Syria is likely to overshadow the two-day summit starting Thursday in the Russian city, splits between emerging markets and the US over its winding down of stimulus and the slowing growth of India and other four BRICS countries are expected to remain in focus. ODHPUR: Self-styled godman Asaram Bapu yesterday refuted the rape charge against him by a 16year-old girl, saying her medical report does not support her allegation as the court put off till Wednesday’s hearing on his bail plea. Asaram, 72, was sent to jail on Monday after he was remanded in 14-day judicial custody by a court here. Asaram was arrested in Indore following an FIR lodged by the victim that she was sexually assaulted by him. Asaram's counsel K.K. Menon, arguing on his bail plea before District and Sessions Judge (Rural) Manoj Kumar Vyas, alleged that the police had worked under the pressure of media and prepared FIR in a hurry. After hearing for two hours the arguments by the defence, the magistrate said the hearing in the case will continue tomorrow and prosecution would be heard. Menon later told PTI, "The FIR against Asaram does not stand as there are several lacunae in it." "There were some additional inputs in the FIR after MLC (Medico Legal Certificate) conducted on the victim. MLC report does not support the statements made by the girl. Hence, the case does not fall under section 376 (rape charge) of IPC...Outraging of modesty is not attracted...It is bailable, and bail should be granted to my client," he said. ASHIK: Ten youngsters, including four girls, working as trainees in a company were on Tuesday arrested for allegedly driving their 19-yearold female colleague to suicide. The victim, Pranali Pradeep Rahane, a resident of Indira Nagar locality, had allegedly tried to end her life on Sunday night. She was rushed to a hospital where she succumbed to her injuries at a hospital on Tuesday. She worked as a trainee in a Satpur-based company and was allegedly harassed and ragged by 10 trainees, including four girls, continuously. Fed up with this, Pranali on Sunday night first slashed her wrist and then hanged herself

from a ceiling fan at her house when she was alone. Later, her father Pradeep Rahane, a plumber by profession, found her hanging and immediately rushed her to a hospital where she died yesterday. The girl left a note which purportedly mentioned that she was harassed and ragged by her colleagues which prompted her to take the extreme step. The note was handed over to the police by the deceased's father. Police have booked the ten accused under section 306 (abetment of suicide) of the IPC and section 4 of Maharashtra Ragging Act. The victim's father alleged that her daughter was bright and she

was selected to go to Germany for further training by the company. Her colleagues were jealous of her and, therefore, they used to harass her. The accused and the victim were doing apprenticeship at the company following completion of industrial training after passing from Class X. The ten arrested accused, all in the age group of 18-19 years, have been identified as -- Bhooshan Paradeshi, Abhijit Bhor, Vishal Korade, Amit Pawar, Swapnil Sonawane, Shweta Shinde, Tejaswini Birari, Shubhada Kajale, Neha Sonawane and Harshal Patil. The accused were produced in a local court and remanded in police custody till Sept 7.

REVIEW OF THE PREVIOUS DAY: The Nifty fell substantially on Tuesday (September 03, 2013) a net 209.30 points (3.77%) and closed at the 5341 point level. The market opened up with a gap at the 5574 points level. It then rose further by a few points and registered the day’s high at the 5580 points level at 9.16 a.m. The index then declined sharply into the red and turned into a range bound movement until 2.54 p.m. It then declined further and registered the day’s low at the 5323 points level at 3.20 p.m. The index then turned into a range bound movement until closing at the day. The moved in a range of 257 points and closed below the psychologically important 5350 points level on reports of an attack on Syria and also due to weakness in the rupee. Sentiment was extremely bearish and amongst the 50 Nifty stocks 47 were losers, while just 3 stocks closed in the green. All the sectoral indices closed in the red. Substantial selling was seen banking, consumer durables, realty and FMCG stocks.

The IMF has asked Indian regulators such as Sebi and RBI to put in place a strong coordination framework to deal with possible failure of the country’s financial conglomerates, an issue that has been a key concern in the US and other large economies. In its financial sector assessment report on the Indian securities market, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) said that “regulators should seek to develop a basic framework for coordination to deal with the failure of entities” belonging to large financial conglomerates.

India Inc Raises USD 3.71 Bn In July Via ECB, FCCB

India Inc raised over USD 3.71 billion from overseas markets in July through external commercial borrowings (ECBs) and foreign currency convertible bonds (FCCBs). In June, the Indian companies had raised USD 1.95 billion through the ECB and FCCB route. Under the automatic route, as many as 72 companies raised USD 1.39 billion through the automatic route which does not require approval from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) or the government, data on the RBI website showed yesterday.

RIL Eyes Oil Blocks In Venezuela

Reliance Industries is evaluating investing multi-billion dollars in 2-3 oil blocks offered by Venezuela as it looks at countries from Myanmar to Canada to expand its overseas energy assets. “We are looking at two things in Venezuela. One is, we have a long term (crude oil) supply contract and we are looking at enhancing the quantities under this contract, possibly from next year,” RIL Executive Director P M S Prasad told reporters on sidelines of a FICCI event.

Coal Ministry Asks CIL To Sign FSAs By Sept 6

State-owned Coal India has been asked to sign FSAs with power plants by September 6, after the earlier deadline set by the Coal Ministry for signing of fuel supply pacts for a capacity of 78,000 MW expired on August 30. The direction to CIL for signing of the pacts was given by the Coal Ministry in a meeting held recently. “Coal India has been asked to sign fuel supply agreements (FSAs) for 78,000 MW capacity by September 6,” a source said. CIL has to sign 173 FSAs with power companies for a total capacity of 78,000 MW, as directed by the Coal Ministry.

TCS Bags Multi-Million Euro Deal From Norway’s DNB Group

Automobile Monthly Volumes Disappoint By A Business Reporter

he just released volume data of Indian auto companies show a very disappointing YoY as well as MoM performance in Aug’13; with most of the players recording flat or decline in volumes on a YoY and MoM basis during the month. The early monsoon and increasing fuel prices have impacted rural demand this time, says a just released research report by Karvy Stock Broking. Moreover, mediocre expectations on the demand front from of the upcoming festival season has impacted dealer off take to some extent. Overall inventory has remained healthy. This time all the segments of industry, PV, CV and two wheelers continued their downward trend. However, the Tractor industry reported marginal growth on a low base with some improvement in Eastern and Western belt.

After recording growth for years together, M&M’s Auto volume declined for the second consecutive month with a fall of 17% YoY (up 2.2% MoM) to 37,897 units, however its Tractor volume inched up 7% YoY, but down 23% MoM to 14,158 units in Aug’13. Tata Motors’ volume declined 31% YoY and 3.6% MoM to 49,611 units. Maruti Suzuki’s volumes rose sharply by 61.2% YoY and 4.8% MoM to 87,323 vehicles in Aug’13, as Company’s volume suffered due to labour unrest during Aug’12. Ashok Leyland’s total volume decreased 24% YoY and 18% MoM to 7,139 units in the month. In the twowheeler space, TVS Motor recorded volume of 155,532 units, flat YoY and up 1.2% MoM in Aug’13. Bajaj Auto’s volume declined 9.5% YoY (up 11% MoM) to 312,188 units, while Hero MotoCorp’s total volume grew 3.6% YoY (down 5.7% MoM) to 459,996 units in Aug’13.

Dr. Helen Benson is summoned to a military facility with several other scientists when an alien spacecraft of sorts arrives in New York City. Chinna is an orphan kid adopted by a jailer. But as a teenager, he was sent to jail for committing a crime in the jailers house. But was it really his folly? The story proceeds by showing how he is a good-doer but his ways are not accepted by the society because he resorts to muscle power to get his work done. EW YORK: Roger Federer crashed out of the US Open in the fourth round while Rafael Nadal captured his 19th hardcourt win in a row to reach the quarter-finals without having allowed a service break. Federer suffered a stunning upset at the hands of Spanish 19th seed Tommy Robredo, whose 7-6 (7/3), 63, 6-4 shocker yesterday was his first victory in 11 matches against the 17time Grand Slam champion and fivetime US Open winner. "I'm going to feel like I beat myself," Federer said. "It was up to me to make the difference and I just couldn't. I self-destructed, which is really disappointing. When things came to the crunch I just couldn't do it. It's frustrating." Federer's failure, which came on the heels of a shock second-round Wimbledon exit, thwarted a potential quarter-final match with 12-time Grand Slam winner Nadal in what would have been their first meeting on the New York hardcourts. "If I'm playing like this, I'm not going to beat Rafa," Federer said. This was the first year since 2002 that Federer has not made a Grand Slam final. Instead, it will be Robredo in his first US Open quarter-final against second-seeded countryman Nadal, who dispatched Germany's 22ndseeded Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-7 (4/7), 6-4, 6-3, 6-1. "It was very tough conditions, very humid. I sweat too much," Nadal said. "But the opponent was great. Lucky to be through I think. I fought a lot to get through this match."

MUMBAI TIGERS PULL OUT OF I-LEAGUE

EW DELHI: The I-League this season will have 13 teams instead of 14 after Mumbai Tigers today pulled out of the country's premier football tournament in a surprise move. Mumbai Tigers, owned by Dubai-based Dodsal Group, was roped in by the All India Football Federation with much fanfare as one of the two new teams in the league. The sudden move came less then 20 days before the start of the league. "Citing unavoidable circumstances, Mumbai Tigers have decided not to take part in

the 2013-14 Season of I-League, requesting further for their involvement in the 2nd Division League for this season," the AIFF said in a statement. "The Mumbai based Club informed the AIFF that they are not ready at the moment to participate in the First Division and need more time to prepare for participation in the I-League," it said. I-League Chief Executive told PTI that the league will now have just 13 teams. "We did not have any idea that this could be coming. Suddenly they (Mumbai Tigers) sent a letter to us that

they are not ready to play in the ILeague this season. Only 13 teams will be there in the ILeague this year," he said. He said there would not be any need to draw a new I-League schedule after the pull out by Mumbai Tigers. "There will be no need for new fixtures to be prepared. Those matches involving Mumbai Tigers will be removed in the schedule already drawn up," Dhar said. Asked about the Rs 3 crore to be given each year by the club to the AIFF for fielding its team in the I-League, Dhar said, "The

money was not to be given to the AIFF. It was to be invested by the club for infrastructure development." Tabhane impresses in World Roller Skating Championship in Belgium

MUMBAI: National champion Nikhilesh Tabhane created history at the 2013 World Roller Skating championship in Belgium when he became the first senior Indian roller skater to reach the quarterfinal stage of the 300m sprint event earlier this week. The 22-year-old from Nagpur, who is now supported by Ameya Classic Club in Virar, clocked a timing of 25.88 secs despite difficult conditions and is aiming for a podium finish next year. “I got just one session to train in Oostende, Belgium, since I reached only a day before the event and that day it was raining till evening. Despite that I managed to clock a very good timing but I know that I can do better,” he said.

UMBAI: A young Sports Authority of India (SAI) came up with a lionhearted performance to force a 4-4 draw with Indian Navy in a fast-paced and thrilling Super Division encounter of the Mumbai Hockey Association Limited (MHAL) League 2013, played at the MHAL Stadium, Churchgate, on Tuesday evening. Leading the SAI charge was their skipper Manpreet Singh, who not only marshalled the midfield brilliantly, but also produced two goals, the second coming with just two minutes remaining in the match to bring cheer for the youngsters from Kandivali. Jatinder Singh and Mahendra K netted the other two goals. For last year’s runners-up, Indian Navy, Heera Singh, Ved Prakash, Faheen Khan and captain Surender Kumar were responsible in getting their goals. The scores were tied 1-1 at the end of the first half and seven of the eight goals were superb field efforts while only Navy’s fourth goal came through a penalty corner. The match started off on a rousing note as both side played an open attacking game. The SAI outfit exhibited good skills and understanding as they rose to match their more senior opponents in almost every department. On the other hand, Navy have themselves to blame as they messed up quite a number of chances. They SAI goalkeeper Naresh Chaudhari, who excelled under bar, proved quite a hard nut to crack and on many occasions the Navy players were unable to beat him from close. After the two teams had a couple of attempts at either end the Sailor struck in the 16th minute when Heera Singh scored with a reverse hit from an assist from Mohit Singh Thakur. The 45-year-old South African, who guided the national team to World Cup triumph in 2011 apart from taking the Test side to the No.1 spot, has been roped in to turn the fortunes of one of the most popular franchises in the IPL after their disastrous eighthplace finish in the last season. However, the support staff will remain intact with Eric Simons now working as an assistant coach alongside his close friend while TA Sekar continues to be the Team Mentor. Only one review per innings should be allowed in DRS: Cairns

BANGALORE: Former New Zealand all-rounder Chris Cairns feels the Umpire Decision Review System should be restricted to just one usage per innings to prevent it from becoming a “crutch”. “The DRS is something that helps the game but I think it needs to be used not as a crutch in the game. I would actually have one review per innings because it is there to stop a very bad decision,” he added. The DRS has been controversial since its inception and has drawn mixed reactions in international cricket. India has been among the staunch opposers of the system. Currently, teams are allowed two unsuccessful appeals in an innings. Talking about the poor form of New Zealand, Cairns said the team has been disappointing in every form of the game but hoped it would climb up the rankings in next three years.

India announce junior team for Sultan of Johar Cup

NEW DELHI: Midfielder Manpreet Singh will lead an 18-member Indian junior hockey team in the third Sultan of Johar Cup to be played at Johor Bahru, Malaysia from September 22 to 29. Hockey India Selectors B P Govinda, Syed Ali, Dr R P Singh and coaches Gregg Clark and Baljeet Singh Saini along with Government Observer Harbinder Singh selected the players with nine standbys during the trials held at Major Dhyanchand National Stadium here on August 28 and 29. Decision on Yogeshwar’s return to action in 3-4 weeks: Doctor

NEW DELHI: The doctor treating Yogeshwar Dutt’s recurring knee problem said that the Olympic medallist wrestler was recovering from his injury and the timing of his return to action would be decided later in the month. The 30-year-old wrestler, who suffered a MCL (medial collateral ligament) tear in his right knee in July, was forced out of the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary but would be flying off to join the team for a coaching camp ahead of the marquee event from September 16-22. “Yogeshwar’s right knee has suffered an ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) and MCL tear before and were operated. He recently suffered an MCL tear again. We were contemplating a surgery for it. But last week, we found that the injury has considerably healed so we decided against it,” said Dinshaw Pardiwala, who is the head of Centre for Sports Medicine at Mumbai’s Kokilaben Hospital.

CSA could lose R2.5 million a day from shortened India tour

JOHANNESBURG: Cricket South Africa (CSA) could lose up to 2.5 million rand a day in revenue if the Indian tour later this year is shortened, according to a media report. The Afrikaans daily Beeld quoted sources as saying that CSA stands to lose about R300 million in total if the India tour is shortened, particularly from TV broadcast rights. Sources also said that CSA is not in a position to take the matter to court, as India is yet to sign the ICC Future Tours Programme and would therefore not have to account if it shortened proposed tours and arranged others. CSA had announced that India would tour the country for three Tests, seven ODIs and two T20 matches between November 18 and January 25.
