Health officials create awareness and precautions to be taken to keep this illness at bay Whom do you want to blame today for the depreciation of the Rupee, sir? The opposition parties or the war-like situation in Syria?

OPINIONS

Do you think that with the increase in crimes against women and children, self-defense training programmes should be implemented at school level? Priya Mayekar Lawyer Yes. Along with selfdefense, children should be given basic awareness along with counseling. It should be made compulsory as a part of the curriculum. Grade-wise a child should be made aware about the subject.

Khooshnam Daviervala Lawyer Yes. Each and every girl should be trained in selfdefense. I also feel that special programmes in self-defense should be organised for ladies. Manek Kalyaniwala Lawyer Yes. Schools in Delhi have introduced self-defense as a subject. Schools in Mumbai should opt for it too. It should be like a proper subject till the student passes out from school.

Nidhi Upadhyaya Journalist Yes. Proper academic training in self-defense will help students protect themselves.

Zahabiya Takulla Service Yes. It should be made a compulsory subject. Self defense training will work along with mentally training students to keep calm and use their presence of mind under difficult situations.

She was running temperature and had been complaining of bodyache. Initially, she took treatment from a local doctor. But on Friday her condition worsened. And on Satur-

day, she started deteriorating further. Her condition was so bad that she said that she was unable to even move. So on Sunday, we got her admitted to the Emergency ward at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital. After sometime, she was shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). She wasn’t responding well to the treatment. Her organs were damaged due to dengue. And on Tuesday, at around 2.30 a.m., she passed way,” said Jagdish Nair, brother-inlaw of the deceased. “We haven’t received the reports from the hospital as yet but we have been telephonically informed that a rapid test had tested the lady positive for dengue. Azad Shrivastav brings you Ganesha doing the things we love to do - playing various instruments, working on a laptop, singing, dancing, reading, writing and teaching. He is the Lord of a thousand faces and talents, and many of these were on exhibition last month at Linking Road in Bandra. The showroom, Satguru’s, even had him as a doctor and an advocate, not to mention a kite-flying Ganesh skilfully manipulating his own sankat mochak. ory behind the creation of a human Ganesha is to convey the message that God is in all of us and love, respect and harmony with each other is the key to progress in any field.

he railings along the Ghatkopar skywalk, built by MMRDA, which connects East to West, are in a very bad shape. The steel rods are missing at many places, and since the height of the fencing is four feet, children can easily go through the gap and fall a straight 30 feet on to the road below. Even if an adult fails to pay proper attention on the skywalk, he or she may easily slip past the gaps, of which there are many and fall all the way down. Someone has tried to close some of the gaps in the railings by tying bamboo poles but the job is flimsy, hence the risk factor remains. Several other gaps remain open.

O

n Monday at around 8:30 pm, Samana Iqbal Ansari (26), who had completed her term of pregnancy, was in a train on her way to get admitted at Nair Hospital when she suddenly went into labour. With hardly any help available from the railway staff, she delivered at Andheri station. Ansari had boarded the train at Malad along with her mother, and went into labour as the train neared Andheri, so decided to get off and go to a private hospital in Andheri for her delivery. According to Shivaji Shinde, Senior Police Inspector, Government Rail-

way Police, Andheri, “The driver of the ambulance was not reachable at the time when the lady was in labour, although the ambulance was parked outside the station.” There was no other mode available to rush the lady to a hospital immediately, Ansari along with the help of her mother and a woman commuter, Piyusha Mehta, delivered her baby at the Andheri station itself. According to Shinde, “The railway staff later arranged a taxi to take the Ansaris and the baby to Cooper Hospital. I have got the news from the doctors at Cooper Hospital and from family members that the mother and the child are doing fine.”

exterior surfaces of stations will also be made available for advertisements by way of digital display, glow-signs, vinyl wrapping etc.”, said Ashwini Bhide, Additional Metropolitan Commissioner, MMRDA. “The appointed agency is expected to fix, maintain secure advertisements for the station areas and maintain Mono Rail piers by removing all unwanted posters, stick-

ers, drawings, graffiti etc. and also lease advertisement rights of these piers for commercial advertisements”, said Dilip Kawathkar, Joint Project Director (PR), MMRDA. he owner of a private city survey office in Santacruz (East) was shocked on Wednesday morning to find the lock on the main door to his office broken and cash worth Rs 27 lakh, which he had kept inside his office drawer, missing. The owner, Mahadev Nyano Andurlekar, had brought the cash to distribute the salaries to his employees and also the bonus for the upcoming Ganesh Chaturthi festival. The CCTV footage subsequently looked at revealed that two unidentified persons had broken the lock on the

main door using implements used by labourers. Interestingly, both the accused started collecting cash which had been kept in various

drawers in the office and put it into a plastic bag. As a matter of fact, one of the robbers began stuffing his pant pockets with the cash,

proposal to provide financial assistance of Rs.3 lakh for rehabilitation of victims of rape and acid attacks is likely to come up for discussion on Wednesday before the Maharashtra Cabinet. “Women and Child Development department would table the proposal for providing financial aid to the victims of acid attack and rape. “Around Rs 3 lakh would be given as assistance to such victims for their treatment, legal aid, counselling and rehabilitation purposes,” stateWomen and Child Development Minister Varsha Gaikwad told PTI, yesterday. The proposal was mooted by the women and child welfare department in the wake of the gangrape of a 23-year-old photojournalist here last month. Gaikwad was addressing media after attending a programme organised on safety of women in the metropolis here. She also urged women who are victims of rape to come forward and file complaint. “Women should come forward and register an FIR so that they can get justice. The Home department has instructed police that if a victim wants to file FIR through phone, they will have to register it,” she said.

nother religious place has been targeted by unidentified miscreants who broke into the Sai-Baba temple in the Modi-Patel Road area of Bhayandar (West) and decamped with ornaments and cash worth more than Rs.72,500. The miscreants sneaked into the temple premises and broke open the six locks on the door before decamping with ornaments, including a silver crown and Rs.45,000 in cash. The break-in was discovered only on Tuesday morning by the temple priest,

Arun Thakur, who then informed the Bhayandar police. The stolen cash was part of the donations collected for renovation of the temple. The miscreants also made an unsuccessful attempt to break into some mobile stores located adjacent to the temple. The Bhayandar police are investigating the case. “A series of thefts have been reported from this area in the past ten days, raising a serious question mark on the efficiency of the police,” said local resident and former BJP corporator Om Prakash Garodia.

According to the investigating officer in the case, Police Sub Inspector (PSI) Samir Barawkar, “Both the robbers cleaned up the office within 15 minutes, and looking their style, it is suspected that they are habitual thieves and may be involved in other robberies too. The incident took place at Navjeevan Society at 3rd Golibar Road, which is surrounded by slums. It is a very busy area, but we have not got any clue about the culprits.” “Around 16 employees

When the couple entered the place, the three accused – Bengali, Ansari and Vijay – were already present inside the Shakti Mills compound. The trio intimidated the couple saying that the boy seemed to be the one accused of a murder which had taken place in 2010 and the body was dumped inside the Shakti Mills. Seeing that the boy was petrified, the three accused called two friends – now arrested fourth accused and Babu. The boy, who was not in touch with his parents for the past several years, took the girl to Chhattishgarh. While in Chhattishgarh, they saw the news of a young journalist raped inside Shakti Mills and after pondering for a few days, thought it best to inform about their ordeal to the girl’s parents. On September 1, the couple reached the city and the girl informed her mother about her gangrape inside Shakti Mills. The mother took the girl to Bhandup police station, as a missing complaint had been registered there. After hearing the girl’s story, the Bhandup police transferred the case to the N M Joshi Marg police station under whose jurisdiction the Shakti Mills area falls, informed Shrirang Nadgauda, senior inspector of Bhandup police station. Meanwhile, a separate case of rape has been registered at N M Joshi Marg police station against three among the five arrested accused. Rafiq Abdul Samad Shaikh alias Shankar, a resident of Chembur. Both had earlier been arrested by the Mumbai crime branch for their alleged role in the murder of gangster Farid Tanasha at his residence in Chembur in 2010. It was Khan who was first arrested by the CID in this case and the interrogation revealed that he and Shankar had followed Bhosale’s car and opened fire on him. Shankar was then lodged in Taloja Jail after being arrested in the Tanasha murder case. A CID team, led by deputy superintendent Mahesh Thite, took Shankar’s custody from the Taloja Jail and produced him in the magistrate’s court in Pune. The CID also named Chhota Rajan and gangsters Vijay Shetty, Sanjay Yadav and Rajesh Yadav as accused in the case. It may be recalled that the CID had not named Rajan in the earlier chargesheet of 2009 which it had filed in the case.

So, Bhosale along with his lawyers Manish Bhore and Anant Shargavkar, approached the Bombay High Court with a petition stating that CID’s chargesheet didn’t include the names of businessman S. K. Agarwal and gangster Chhota Rajan who, according to witnesses, was involved in the case. During the hearing in the court on Tuesday, Additional Public Prosecutor Purnima Kantharia told the court that the police do not know Rajan’s whereabouts. Replying to this, Justice Dharmadhikari said, “This is something we find hard to believe. Private persons have been able to establish contact with Rajan and take interviews on the phone. He participates in chat shows, then why is it that the police have not been able to trace his location?” The bench directed the Pune CID to submit its additional investigation report within four weeks. philip.varghese@afternoondc.in

the ruling alliance cross voted in favor of the BJP-Shiv Sena backed Independent candidate Prithviraj Sambhajirao Kakde. Out of the 289 members of the legislative assembly, in the end 273 MLAs voted in the elections. To make matters worse for the ruling alliance, two MLAs cast invalid votes, further reducing the number of valid votes to 271 votes and bringing the required quota of votes to win, down to 136 votes. In the final result, the NCPs Dhananjay Munde polled 165 votes, 14 votes less than the 179 votes that the Congress-NCP had in its kitty. As many as 18 MLAs did not cast their ballot which included 12 MNS MLAs. What is remarkable for Kakde was that despite contesting as an Independent candidate with the BJP-

Dhananjay Munde Sena’s backing he managed to poll 106 votes. The BJP-Sena on its own have 92 MLAs, but only 89 MLAs actually cast their ballot, which meant that besides the 89 BJP-Sena votes, Kakde managed to poll 17 votes more. Out of the 24 Independent MLAs, 13 Independent MLAs are aligned with the Congress and 11 with the NCP. The NCP now is blaming the Congress for not keeping its flock of MLAs intact. What is worse is that the BJP-Sena alliance did not hold any strategy meeting to brief its MLAs on how to vote in the elections. Dy CM and NCP leader Ajit Pawar has ordered an inquiry into how Dhananjay Munde could not poll all the 179 quota votes that the Congress-NCP had in its kitty. The latest tally in the 78 member Legislative Council is as follows: Cong 21, NCP 28, BJP 10, Shiv Sena 8, PWPI 1, RPIA 1, Lok Bharti 1 and Ind 8.

formed an anti-terrorism court in Islamabad conducting the trial of the seven suspects that an Indian government letter dated August 23 had stated that the Pakistani judicial commission could visit Mumbai during September 5-6. “The commission will leave on September 7 for Delhi and it will need at least four days to crossexamine the four witnesses (in

The witnesses are the magistrate who recorded LeT member Ajmal Kasab’s confessional statement, the chief investigating officer and two doctors who conducted the autopsy of the terrorists who carried out the Mumbai attacks in November 2008.

The Commission repeatedly failed to keep its dates in the past and with cancellation of the latest proposed visit, the on-going trial of seven suspects in that country will suffer further delay. In past, the report submitted by the panel after its first visit in March 2012 was rejected by an anti-terrorism court as the commission’s members were not allowed to crossexamine witnesses.

attacked another country in the Middle-East – Iraq – because it was producing ‘weapons of mass destruction’. The American army came into Iraq and shot Iraq’s dictator dead and finally left – leaving the country in a mess. It was later found that no weapons of mass destruction were being produced in Iraq. It is clear that the US has a hidden game to play in Syria. It does not have now friends it had before: Russia, UK and Iran are opposed to the attack by the US. And the Congress in his own country is not extending support to him. The US president, however, seems to be hell-bent on attacking Syria whose ruler is allegedly using chemical weapons to curb rebellion. Warships of the US are already in the Mediterranean Sea and it looks like there is a war-like situation developing in the region.

Gag order with eye on elections It took some hectic firefighting by senior leaders of the BJP to silence their motormouth state leaders who were shooting off statements defending rape-accused godman Asaram Bapu. Rajnath Singh and others issued strict gag orders to those who were speaking up. They were warned to stay as far away as possible from the controversy and refrain from embarrassing the party.

Srinagar over the weekend is the home ministry’s ambitious effort to counter Pakistani propaganda about Kashmir being a disturbed area. The concert is being sponsored by the German embassy in India and will be broadcast live in 23 European countries. Apparently, those who handle Kashmir here thought this would be a clever way of telling the world that everything is normal in this border state. But now with the concert running into so much controversy and local opposition from even top religious leaders like Grand Mufti Ahmad Bashiruddin, the ruling establishments in New Delhi and Srinagar are distancing themselves from it. Officials in Omar Abdullah’s government and the union home ministry told correspondents recently they are merely providing logistical support and security. The concert, they insisted, was a German embassy show. It would appear that both have got cold feet and want to dump the controversy at the doorstep of the Germans.

He was spotted in Lodi Garden one morning asking the way to BJP leader Arun Jaitley’s tea corner. Apparently, Singh had heard that Jaitley holds a daily morning durbar over tea and biscuits in the capital’s premier walking space. The crowd is mostly lawyers and there’s a sprinkling of journalists. Being a lawyer himself, Singh decided that he had the right credentials to join the gathering. Unfortunately, he lost his way and couldn’t find the tea point. An obliging morning walker helped him out. Singh is obviously working the Jaitley route to Narendra Modi who will play a decisive role in distributing party nominations for the election.

He’s been experimenting with the dishes by serving up these delights over the past couple of weeks to President Pranab Mukherjee and the guests who join him for informal meals almost on a daily basis in the newly appointed dining rooms of Rashtrapati Bhavan. Kasture was part of an 18-member group known as the Club des Chefs des Chefs or CCC which claims to be the world’s most exclusive gastronomical society. All its members are executive chefs to presidents, prime ministers and royal households in 18 nations and they meet every year in different member countries to exchange notes on foodie delights. This year, it was the turn of the White House chef to host co-members. Also on the agenda was a meeting with the world’s most powerful man, President Barack Obama, which probably was the high point for Kasture.

N Indian villages I have seen with my own eyes… in India you cannot marry a widow. It is really the same logic because if people start marrying widows then who cares about virginity? In a strange way widows look more beautiful. Perhaps they have to look more beautiful, otherwise who is going to be interested in them? Virgins are inexperienced, look childish; widows are experienced, well polished, more attractive. But in an Indian village, if you marry a widow, the whole village — which is still a tribe — boycotts you, and the boycott is total. You cannot take water from the village well, you cannot purchase anything from any village shop; nobody will welcome you into his home. The village will simply forget about you as if you don't exist. You cannot live; it is impossible. If you cannot purchase anything and nobody speaks to you, if you cannot even get water from the well, life has become impossible. What kind of freedom…?

Enslaver becomes a slave One man — he was one of my students in the University — told me that he would like to marry a widow. In India that is a problem.

Nobody wants to marry a widow. So there are people who think that to marry a widow is a great sacrifice. I said, "You can marry, but once you have married she will not be a widow. Then what will you do? Then the whole charm will disappear because the charm is in her being a widow." He laughed — he thought I was joking. And he got married. And after six months he said, "You were right. I'm no more interested in her. My interest was basically

I am absolutely in favour of liberation — liberation for both man and woman — because it is a simple law: the enslaver also becomes a slave of his own slaves. Man has enslaved woman, but he has also become a slave. That's why you cannot find a husband who is not really henpecked — at least I have not found one yet. I have been searching for a husband who is not henpecked.

MATTER & SPIRIT

Once I was on a journey and someone asked me which word in a man's vocabulary was the most valuable. My reply was, "Love". The man was surprised. He said he had expected me to answer "soul" or "God". I laughed and said, "Love is God." Raising on the ray of love one can enter the enlightened kingdom of God. It is better to say that love is God than to say that truth is God, because the harmony, the beauty, the vitality and the bliss that are part of love are not part of truth. Truth is to be known; love is to be felt as well as known. The growth and perfection of love lead to the ultimate merger with God. — Osho

in her widowhood. I wanted to show to the public that I am a great servant of people, that I am serving people even through my love. I am sacrificing my love for a widow. I am going against the society, I am going against the tradition. I am doing something great. But now the marriage has happened and the widow has come, now there is no point." I said, "You do one thing. You commit suicide. She will be a widow again, and somebody else will have a chance to serve her again. If you are really a public servant, do this." Since then I have not seen him.

Justice should not be delayed in Asaram’s case THE Court has taken the right decision to send fake molester, rapist and self-styled godman Asaram Bapu to judicial custody for 14 days. Since the police investigation is complete and the police claim to have solid evidence against him for raping a young girl in his Indore ashram, they should not waste their time and must file the charge sheet as early as possible against him as he will be out on bail and may tamper with the evidence and may put pressure on the victim and her family to withdraw the case and threaten them with dire consequences. The urgent need of the hour is that since nobody is above law he should not be spared and must be severely punished for his heinous crime and for lowering the Indian culture to rock bottom. IT is disgusting to note rape cases happening one after another. As usual the rapists know that no law in India is going to harm them or touch them, so the crime goes on. Juvenile is not senile IF the justice system in our country does not see the light of day and continues to treat criminals under 18 with kids’ gloves, we’ll soon have gangsters deliberately recruiting “underage” persons for gangland killings, and every horny “youngster” will hasten to commit rape before he turns 18. With the benefit of only three years maximum period of detention no matter what the crime, it’s now an open invitation to the criminally-inclined to hasten up and fulfill their aim and ambition

Calling PM a ‘chor’ OUR Prime Minister Manmohan Singh cries like a little baby that no other country has MPs shouting ‘PM chor hai’ in Parliament. I don’t know whether he is chor or not but most probably, no other country has chor PM too. Then who will shout, and why? And even if there is one, he is nabbed and severely punished. Possibly our PM may not be chor but at least, he is the sardar, i.e. head of the party and the allies like DMK from where few chors have been robbing the nation since 2004 or even before that, by means of 2G, CWG, Adarsh, Bofors and fodder. AMEND THE LAW: If there is no law to penalise juveniles severely, there may be rise in crimes by underaged criminals as criminal gangs will prefer to engage them.

THIS refers to the front-page report ‘In court today Potholes’ (ADC, Sep 3) to point out that the potholes do not form due to the constant digging of the roads by the various utility agencies because these diggings are mostly on the sides of the roads whereas the potholes develop all over the roads. Any rapist, I repeat, any rapist, whoever he is, should be hanged immediately, without favouring, pampering or defending by any parties. — Perin Akolawala, Mumbai

IT took almost a week and a half for the Jodhpur police to arrest the self styled godman in the alleged rape case (when he should actually had been arrested within

24 hours of the FIR being filed). One can very well understand the pressure from the top to go slow on the case with such lackluster approach. One can understand the amount of delay it will take in the court and then finally the quantum of punishment for this heinous crime (if it’s proven). Asaram did not co-operate before his arrest, but can now expedite the proceedings to prove his “innocence”. Why doesn’t he undertake a MISSILE PARIKSHA (just like SITA’s Agni Pariksha). His case should be shifted to the fast track court in Syria where it’s now almost decided that America will launch an attack in a week or so. If Asaram survives this MISSILE PARIKSHA he is free and if he doesn’t then WE ARE! — Abdul Monim, Vashi

tion of not only the state but the nation as such is deeply worrying. This would mean that more the time lapses the escalation would be automatic and thereby more draining of the public exchequer. Another ambitious project of the state namely the Versova-AndOF heri- Ghatkopar (VAG), LETTER THE DAY metro one is also not getting ready even partially this year as was envisaged earlier. This project suffered a late start and thereby got hit by time and cost overruns along with the Reliance Infra’s complications. This in turn is causing the state to opt for alternative other than running it along with R Infra, which would certainly mean delay in completion. The whole state of the art project scenario at the moment is gloomy, which needs lots of effective deliberation to untie the knots to bring back the project on the rail for an early completion, so that Mumbaikars could have the taste of the metro rail sooner .

TEAM India is up for grabs in England next summer. Team India will play five Tests in England for the first time since 1959 during next year’s tour, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) announced on Monday. The tour schedule also sees 50-over world champions India, who beat England by five runs in the Champions Trophy final at Edgbaston in June, involved in five one-day internationals and a T20. Three of the five Tests will be played at southern venues, Lord’s and The Oval in London plus Southampton’s Rose Bowl although, as the latter is a relatively new international ground, the Test there is still subject to confirmation. Team India is very calculative as the Board cut short tougher South Africa and New Zeland tours and the first part of English summer is easy to get acclammatised early. India is playing only calculative cricket and not competitive cricket.

Superstition is a sign of weakness ONE more activist like Dr. Dabholkar suffered because of the lack in security in this country. We offer security to Sachin Tendulkar, M.S. Dhoni and Ambanis and not to a common crusader like Dr. Narendra Dhabholkar. He came saw and conquered the people to get away from superstition and he showed his wrath on such a mean mindedness in many platforms. He did resist the campaign against him and defied all the protest to keep him away from the centrestage. In his death, Dr. Dabholkar’s bill sees light of day. It toook brutal murder to get rid of the rationalist and for the State Cabinet to brush the dust aside on the two decades old Anti-superstition bill and revive it. At last we saw the light at the end of the tunnel. Now we hear protests and people support the views of the great rationalist, who worked fearlessly for the cause against Black Magic. — Maniam Ramani, Khargar

URGENT ACTION: A law needs to be enacted against superstition at the earliest as demanded by Dr. Dabholkar. WHEN the cops investigating the Dabholkar murder case had gone to Goa to question a Sadhak of the Sanatan Sanstha, the media gave it wide publicity. When he was let off within a couple of hours by the police, the entire fourth estate chose to ignore this development in its totality. However, as an exception to the rule, one vernacular electronic channel chose to flash this news as a

IN a country where self proclaimed godmen, superstitious beliefs and measures in the form of black magic etc, attract millions of followers, it is indeed felt that a suitable bill or a law is required to be passed against many supersitious practices, self proclaimed babas and tantriks who indulge in torture and money making tactics. I feel that this matter is very delicate and that this should not be initiated only against a paritcular religion or sect. This should be applicable wherever there are superstitious practices. I am totally against some practices observed by resorting to killing of infants and children in most cases, human sacrifieces and animal sacrifices too. In almost every such ‘practice’ animals are the “scapegoats” and are freely killed, in large numbers. — S. Krishna Kumar, Dombivli

Circle The set of points in a plane which are equidistant from a fixed point is called a circle.

Arc of a circle: A line containing the chord divides a circle into two parts. Each part of the circle together with the points common to the circle and chord is called an arc of the circle (minor arc MXN, major arc MYN).

Ex. 2.1(5) ‘O’ is the centre of the circle having radius 7 cm. Point P is in the plane of a circle. If OP = 4.5 cm, then state whether ‘P’ is in interior or exterior of the circle? Justify. Solution: The radius (r) of the circle is 7 cm. Point P is in the plane of the circle and OP = 4.5 cm. ∴ OP < r ∴ Point P is in the interior of the circle.

Properties of chords of the circle: Theorem: The perpendicular drawn from the centre of the circle to a chord bisects the chord. Converse: The segment joining the centre of the circle and midpoint of the chord is perpendicular to the chord. Property: Congruent chords are equidistant from the centre of a circle. Converse: The chords which are equidistant from the centre of a circle are congruent. Ex.2.2 (2) In the figure, A is the centre of a circle. Seg AR ⊥ chord PQ. If AP = 25 cm, AR = 7 cm, find the length of chord PQ. Solution: In right angled ∆APR, By Pythagoras theorem, AP2 = AR2 + PR2 ∴ ∴ ∴

Inscribed angle: If the vertex of the angle is on the arc and the end points of the arc are on the sides of the angle, then the angle is an inscribed angle. In the given figure, ∠ACB is an angle inscribed in arc ACB.

Inscribed angle theorem: The measure of the inscribed angle is half the measure of its intercepted arc. Note: In the above figure, ∠ACB is an inscribed angle and arc AQB is an intercepted arc. To solve – Ex. 2.4 (1) Corollary: Angles inscribed in the same arc are congruent.

2.22 ∴ PR2 = 576 ∴ PR = 24 cm The perpendicular drawn from the centre of a circle to a chord bisects the chord. ∴ PQ = 2PR = 2 x 24 cm = 48 cm. ∴ The length of chord PQ is 48 cm.

Cyclic quadrilateral and its properties: A quadrilateral with all its vertices on a circle is called a cyclic quadrilateral. Theorem: The opposite angles of a cyclic quadrilateral are supplementary. To solve – Ex. 2.4 (2)

Tangent of the circle and its properties: A line in the plane of a circle which intersects the circle in one and only one point is a tangent to the circle. A tangent at any point of a circle is perpendicular to the radius through the point of contact. The line which is perpendicular to the outer end of the radius is a tangent to the circle. The length of the two tangent segments drawn to a circle from the external point is equal. Touching circles and its p rop erty: Coplanar circles having one and only one point in common are called touching circles. Centers of touching circles and a point of contact are collinear.

Problem Set 2 (page 183 – 185) (13) Three circles having centers A, B and C are touching each other externally. If AB = 5 cm, BC = 5 cm, AC = 4 cm then find the radii of the circles. Solution: Let r1, r2, r3 be the radii of the circles with centers A, B and C which are touching each other externally at P, Q and R as shown in the figure.

Noted journalist and author, Jerry Pinto, who recently won the Hindu Literary Award for his novel Em and the Big Hoom has been teaching since the age of 16. Three decades later, he remains passionate about teaching despite his success in the journalistic and literary world. He talks to Claudelle Monis and Vinaya Patil and tells them about his adventures as a teacher, a journalist and an author.

Mathematics teacher at the age of 16! What did that feel like? It felt very good, if truth be told. I was earning money and that was why I began to teach. I needed a way to fund my library, to buy all the books I wanted to buy. And so when my uncle Joseph Tellis, then a teacher at Campion School, Mumbai, went on a vacation to Goa, he left me with a few of his students who I began to teach. And their mothers sent me on to other students and before I knew it, I was off and running.

Was teaching your first career choice when you started as a math tutor? Teaching was not my first choice. I don’t know that

I had a first choice. I think most boys of my age and my generation and my academic achievement were actually asked, “So what do you want to become, a doctor or an engineer?” Most children are literal-minded. Presented like that, it seemed as if it were a binary choice, that one could only choose one or the other. Ever present in my mind was also what I had often heard said, that a humanities degree was for girls and duffers. I don’t think I ever made a choice about a career. Teaching was one way to earn money and when my father died — I was 21 years old at the time — it seemed like a good

way to keep the family going. I was finishing a law degree at that time and thought that I would start working as soon as I was done. I stood sixth in the University of Mumbai but when I went looking for a job, I was told at one firm that I would have to deposit money and then would be paid from the interest. At another firm, I was told that I would be paid a pittance. I could not afford it and so abandoned the idea of a career in law without a second thought. Along the way, as I was teaching, I also began writing for the newspapers, thanks to the intervention of an inspired friend, Rashmi Paklhivala nee Hegde.

What made you take up law? You know, if you win enough debates and you speak well and you think on your feet, someone is likely to say, ‘You should be a lawyer.’ And when your parents ask you what you want to do after your duffer degree, you begin to say, ‘Law’ without too much conviction in your voice. But if you say something often enough you find yourself believing it too. And then three years have passed and you have mugged up enough to sit for eighteen examination papers and you have written enough to convince someone you know the law and there you are. One more degree. One more lawyer. Did you ever think of giving it up when you achieved success as a writer and journalist? Every year, journalists go into the editor’s cabin or sit with HR heads and argue for raises but they never ask whether they can raise the rates for the freelance journalists they rely on when they are commissioning. I have written about this before and posted on Facebook about this. So much for solidarity! As long as I was a freelance journalist, there was no way I could pay the bills even if I wrote, as I often did, a piece a day. So I never thought of giving up teaching mathematics as long as I was a freelance journalist. At the age of thirty though, I had taught for fourteen years. I was beginning to take writing seriously as a career and I was even teaching journalism at the Sophia Institute for Social Communications Media. When Hutokshi Doctor offered me a job at the Sunday Review of the Times of India, I took it. It meant a huge reduction in how much I was earning but I could still manage. How do students react to you when they learn of your success? Do you think they take you more seriously or less because of it? Before they come into class, students like the

idea of a teacher who has won a National Award or whatever. When they are actually in class, that fades away. What remains is whether the person there is doing a good job teaching or not. So I think my students will always be happy for me when they read a good review of something I have written or when they hear of an award or something like that. But the batch you’re teaching? They’re only interested in whether you’re making as much of an effort as you should.

Today, would you consider teaching your calling or journalism? Or even writing for that matter? I don’t like labels. Labels turn prescriptive. And prescriptions turn into restrictions. So I prefer to say I’m Jerry Pinto and I teach when I walk into a class at SCM and I write when I’m sitting at my desk or at my computer and I’m an editor when I am called on to edit and I’m a child rights activist when I walk into a board meeting of MelJol. I remain the same person, with the same commitments, the same enthusiasms, the same failings (a quick temper, for instance) and the same weaknesses. And there are mornings when I would rather lie in bed and be a writer and say to myself ‘I am thinking about the right adjective just now, please don’t disturb’. But it is a Thursday morning and I have to be in class at eight and I have to be on time, or how can I teach my students punctuality. And, if I can’t teach my students to be punctual, how can I teach them journalism?! So I lug myself out of bed and make a dash for it and wish that the world could be organized according to my moods.

What was the inspiration behind ‘Em and the Big Hoom’? I don’t remember who first said, “Write what you know” for a first novel. Or did s/he say it for all novels? I don’t know. This is what I know. This is what I wrote.

How is it taking social communications and journalism lessons for the youth? It’s great fun. It’s heart-breaking. It’s magic. It’s misery. It is everything you want it to be on the days when you and your class are working together. It is a tragedy on other days, when students are fractious or tired or bored or whatever it is students are when they’re not being students but just being young people with lots of energy for Facebook and very little energy for reading.

How do you view teaching and journalism as professions in comparison to each other? Good question. There’s a measure of didacticism which is part of both professions but you let it get out of hand in either one and it’s curtains for you and for your aim. Both professions attract the oddly-sized, the prickly pears of the world. That’s what makes the teachers common room and the press club such interesting places. What makes you want to teach assuming you don't have to? As for whether I have to or not, I have to work for a living. But this week, for instance, my students will submit their long-form essays. That’s five thousand words each from 40 students. That’s 200,000 words to read and edit and assess and grade. There are easier ways to make a living. So I teach because it’s my way of paying back.

I met some seriously interesting people thanks to journalism. I got to talk to scientists and poets and authors and inventors because I was a journalist. I got to poke around and ask questions. I got to think and to read. I got to read and got paid to write reviews and got to keep the books. I want to impart some of that excitement to my students. I want them to be freed too, to be liberated from the constructions and constrictions with which they define themselves. I don’t know if I succeed. I try though.

Do you think students have changed over the years? Do they expect you to have answers to everything? No two students are the same. No two batches are the same. And my hat, when have students ever believed that their teachers have the answers to everything? At the post-graduation stage, they make disbelief in authority into a precondition for existence. And that’s the way it should be. Otherwise how would they become journalists? How would they challenge authority? How would they ask, cui bono? How would they look chief ministers in the eye and ask difficult questions? How would they be the voice of the voiceless? How would they defend democracy for all of us?

Do you think the youth will ever be inclined towards teaching? There will always be some people who will take up teaching. There will always be some people who will take up journalism. They are among the lowest paid of all professions, according to the International Labour Organisation. I think it takes a special genius for poverty to choose both.

Do you think teaching has evolved since you started? Is this evolving for better or for worse? Teaching as a profession is better paid now than it ever was. That’s good news for those who are inside the system. As for freelance teachers, they still have to struggle for raises. But at the end of it all, when you see a byline in a newspaper and you recognize the quiet student who has now started on her way; when you get an email from a student thanking you because she’s now at Columbia; when another student gets an award and another makes a lovely documentary, you know why you were there, setting assignments, correcting them and feeling your way as you taught something that you were still in the process of learning. (I try not to say, “She’s my student, you know” because I don’t want to usurp their achievements but I say it to myself and hug it to my heart.)

PS: To all my students out there. If I was mean or harsh or rude in class, I didn’t mean it. If you were hurt by something I said, I’m taking this opportunity to apologise to you. I am sorry.

MUMBAI | WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 4, 2013

With the youth forming a majority of India’s population today, it is no wonder that we see them taking over most professions. Teaching, traditionally considered the stronghold of the older and more experienced lot, is no exception to this trend. This Teachers’ Day, we have a couple of young teachers speaking to Vinaya Patil and Claudelle Monis about teaching the youth. What got you into this profession and when did you first think of it? This is one profession where you get to interact with the youth. You can forever stay young at heart with this profession, considering the amount of time you spend with the students every day. It keeps you on your toes. This idea got me into this profession. I, however, do not exactly remember when I thought of taking it up as a full-time profession. I think the idea just grew inside me and here I am today.

SHAGUN MATTOO, 26, BMS LECTURER, BHAVAN’S COLLEGE What got you into this profession and when did you first think of it? I’ve been teaching at Bhavan’s for a year and a half now, but teaching was not my first career choice. I’ve done my Masters in HR and the logical conclusion to this degree is a job in HR. However, I was not keen on entering the corporate world and that was when my mum, who’s been a teacher for almost 10 years, told me to try teaching. Did you always want to teach the youth or did you ever think of teaching in school? My initial plan was to teach kindergarten kids since I was apprehensive about teaching college kids. When I told my mum what I was worried about, she and other teachers who taught degree college courses, spoke to me and told me that teaching college students is much easier than handling children. Once I had the right motivation, I started lecturing and realised that they were right. How do you connect with your students? I prefer being their friend.I don’t like a formal learning environment. I enter class and give my students 15 minutes to share their views with me. Once they’ve settled down, I start with an interactive session and ensure that the entire lecture has sufficient activity to keep them engrossed.

Have you ever been taken lightly because of your age? I’ve never been taken lightly because of my age simply because I set the ground rules when I first walked into class. I told them I’m not a ‘strict’ teacher, but I’m not one to sit quiet either if they try to take me lightly. Since I made myself clear on the first day, I’ve never had a problem. Do you think more youngsters should take up teaching? I think more youngsters ,especially women, should take up teaching since it is profesionally fulfilling and gives you a freedom that few other professions do. It leaves you with enough time for yourself and your family, something that corporate jobs limit.

Did you always have older teachers or did you encounter a young teacher too? I was taught mostly by older teachers. But I did have one young teacher. I found myself more comfortable in her class and could KANAKA DESHMUKH, 17, approach her with probHSC (ARTS) STUDENT, lems without hesitation. No two students, others might find it days are ever the same and annoying. there is so much that can be learnt from them.

Did you always want to teach the youth or did you ever think of teaching at school level? I have always wanted to teach the youth. One practical reason was my qualification, which was suited for a college teacher. Also, I always looked forward to knowing the youth, learning their means and ways. This is not to undermine school teaching. Ultimately, school is the place where we all learn the basics of academics and life alike.

which the youngsters don’t. The senior teachers have gathered immense knowledge and experience over years of teaching and interacting with the students. For instance, even at a basic level, I myself feel the difference in my teaching every new day. I feel that I getting better at it with ever past day’s experience. Likewise, the seniors have mastered the art and thus pass it on to the students. The younger teachers, on the other hand, might be well-qualified, but they may fall short on first-hand experience. However, the understanding level between a teacher and a student might be much higher when the teacher is young. The generation gap is minimal and thus, the teacher is more capable of understanding the students in terms of their attitudes, mentalities and problems. The environment around students is changing with every passing day and the senior teachers might not necessarily be able to understand this change and thus might not relate to the students at all levels. So yes, there are both pros and cons of the younger lot teaching.

Belly dance on the Side!

Belly dancing is yet another dance form that intrigues dancers but if you’re looking to make it a full-time career, think again! Dr. Preeti Kochar, a dentist and belly dance instructor at the Pulse Studio tells Naressa Coutinho why belly dancing can only fit well as a part-time career option parallel to a more mainstream career.

T

he new millennium saw the famous Latina Shakira introduce a style of dance that became viral with her album Laundry Service and her Arabian belly dance moves in ‘Whenever Wherever’. Belly dance or Raqs Baladi as known to the Middle East, became a craze then and even today many women flock to belly dance studios to learn to shimmy and discipline their hips. “It’s a liberating dance form for girls”, says Dr. Preeti Kochar, a practicing dentist and belly dance instructor at Pulse Studio, “You don’t need a partner nor a group to dance; all you need to do is nurture a love for your own body and to respect it the way it is”. The comforting fact being that belly dance doesn’t demand a size zero but welcomes women of all age groups, shapes and sizes. However, over the years, Dr. Preeti has seen the dance form reach saturation and this becomes the ultimate deciding factor when you look at it from a career perspective. All arrows point to a successful part-time career option when talking of belly dancing, but if it will bend the full-time marker is something of a hiccup. Dr. Kochar says, “Having a mainstream occupation will put bread in your plate and as a part-time career, Belly dancing can be the hobby to pursue”. Most of us know what belly dancing is but besides being an Arabian sensational style, it is a dance with technique. Nine years into

belly dance instructing, Dr. Kochar explains thus, “As a dance form, belly dance entails isolated movements of individual body parts separating the upper body and lower body while training and muscle toning without the use of any equipment. Add a little more choreography and you’re in for a healthy cardio work out”. Belly rolls, hips circuits and jolly waves seem to define this dance form

but today, adaptations from the west have assimilated contemporary styles thereby lending belly dancing a fusion texture of hiphop, Bollywood and even Latin styles. However, Dr. Preeti urges students to first learn the authentic art form as a folk style before fusing in other genres and get attuned to the Arabian beats and rhythms that alone can do justice to this oriental art. “Back in 2005 when I started to teach,” explains Dr.Preeti, “Belly dancing was a lucrative career option but with the popular-

Louder than before: Dream Theater’s Enemy Inside

Progressive rock giant Dream Theater is at it again, this time armed with an arsenal of ideas from new drummer Mike Mangini in the single ‘The Enemy Inside’. The first single from their 12th studio album, Dream Theater keeps you wanting more. Right from the Harsh Godbole start, ‘The Enemy K J Somaiya College Inside’ leaves the listener stunned and James LaBrie’s vocals keep you in a state of anxiety as the band explores the genre of Thrash metal. Softer keyboard and bass overlays add a different perspective through the song. Many would argue that the band has gone slightly stale with their recent albums, and this unfortunately reflects in the initial guitar sequences and a later instrumental section. On the other hand, John Petrucci manages to pull off a stupefying solo around the end. In a nutshell, this is a treat for all progressive rock fans.

Hence, by itself Belly dancing cannot sustain you.” She goes on to say that one would also have to prove their worth because today people are aware of what is being taught and moreover are well-travelled so it is very important to be good at what you do. Obviously, there is also space for innovation within the Raqs Baladi. Where do you learn to belly dance? While there are many classes that offer courses, it’s important to find one that teaches the original authentic art form. Dr. Preeti, in her experience, says that it could take a dancer a month to get into the feel of the dance and the music because it is unconventional and requires some getting used to. As an instructor your charges would differ according to individual, group or private instructing and could range from anywhere between Rs.300 to Rs.1500 per hour. Does it involve any financial investment? No. Besides a pair of harem pants and an Arabian playlist, a belly dance instructor doesn’t have to make any major investments unless she is thinking of renting a place to conduct a class. Again, collaborating with gyms and clubs can easily solve this problem. Lastly, Dr. Preeti urges the youth looking to pursue a career in this field.“Don’t look at belly dancing as a career but make it a passion, one that you can pursue part time in addition to having a solid career.”

The event is backed by a talented committee that oversees the functioning and working of the festival and ensures that OLIO has something exciting to give to the audience. “I have been involved with the event from the very first year and have watched it grow from strength to strength. There is so much talent in colleges and so many waiting for a chance to get on to the big stage. Seeing amateur actors, directors,

For this profession you have to network, network, network, says Sunil Anand, Senior Executive Marketing with Mirah Hospitality and Food Solutions Pvt. Ltd

I

did my PG Diploma in Advertising and Media from Mumbai University, Diploma in Advertising & Public Relations and B.Tech in Agricultural Engineering. Currently, I handle the marketing and brand communication for Manchester United Cafe Bar and Falafels which involves Planning and Strategy, Branding, Marketing budgets, Public Relations, Events, ATL & BTL activities such as advertising, social media, cross promotions, tie-ups and vendor management. Food testing during new menu launches and food festivals is the best part here but the job keeps me on toes at work so I can save on gymming what with all the running done. My job profile is suited in any industry, as the work is almost similar once you understand the product, market and target audience. It is not monotonous and it interests me because every time you have to come up with fresh ideas. I have handled media clients so it was very exciting as I used to get the scoop for my friends from other industries. Best moments were the involvement in pre-production, production and post-production of a TVC shoot and also getting featured in it; yes I got a chance to be a model in the TVC and print shoot of

a campaign. There were ups and downs too. Discussions with fellow colleagues and seniors always help. One of the best things I learnt is not to sit with problems, but to do something about it; discuss or at least make your team aware of it. I like the glamour, being associated with a brand; the challenge to come up with innovative, creative and engaging stuff, to generate footfalls and support sales.

My education has helped me in many ways. I am an engineer graduate because my parents wanted me to do engineering. During my college days, I was actively involved in cultural fests and presentations which helped me in gaining a lot of confidence and developing my per-

sonality. Also, people skills which are very much important in any field as maintaining healthy relations and being a good listener really does help in growing. <<Sunil Anand When I was out of college I was not sure what to pursue as a career and was certain about not getting into engineering again. By a friend’s reference, I got a job of Marketing and Operations in a tourism-ground handling firm, later through socializing, I learnt about advertising and the job profile known as ‘Client Servicing’. During client servicing days, interaction with clients turned into friendships which helped me understand their exact profiles and what I would have to do to get on to the clients’ side. Thus, now I am at the clients’ side, handling 360 degrees of marketing communications for brands. Training days are the best time of life. After my graduation in engineering I worked as a fresher for a digital media agency, print media agency and handled the marketing profile too. These areas were very new for me as I did not have a base in mass communications. My seniors saw the urge for learning in me and with each new task added more responsibilities which helped me understand the different verticals of marketing. I thank them for being great mentors and letting me make mistakes so that I could learn from them and improve. Talking about creative agency days, I worked as a client servicing person in agencies, who handles clients and is the face of the agency. So as to balance this act, my seniors taught me to maintain a task list and

a job status report, research and survey work, management of resources, vendors, and prominently time management. Apart from this, the daily brainstorming sessions developed a creative streak in me. I learnt how important and different various types of communications can be. Being on the clients’ side now, I understand why my clients use to be impatient about the jobs. The amount of work put in by the art, copy and studio departments is commendable. I did all media related studies after graduation. While working, I completed Diploma in Advertising and Media from Welingkars and PG Diploma in Advertising and Media from Mumbai University. The fees are very nominal and anyone with passion and who is ready to compromise on weekends can do this course with ease. Depending upon how well you crack the interview, good communication and confidence is what is required in my field. The starting salary can be Rs.10 to15 thousand per month. It takes about three to four years to become a professional. The salary goes up to a seven-figure salary per annum, if you have a good CV. The best part about the job is that you are surrounded by fun-loving, smart and party animals. The job keeps you always updated with the happenings around the globe. You can also be a freelance consultant on marketing planning and strategy or handle PR assignments. The difficulties are about getting the right opportunity and the right people. My advice for those who want to take up my profession is Understand the industry, get educated and groom yourself; always be presentable, be a good listener, work hard and network, network, network. As told to Monarose Sheila Pereira

Grass-root exposure with international perspectives T

he 2013 edition of Tata ISES culminated with a contingent of 20 international students – seven from University of California, Berkley, USA; one from the University of California, Davis, USA; seven from the London School of Economics & Political Science, UK; and five from the University of Cambridge, UK – completing their two-month experiential internship in the ongoing Corporate Sustainability (CS) projects of the Tata companies in India. The batch of Tata ISES 2013, worked hands-on on the community initiatives of the Tata companies and entities like Tata Steel, Tata Chemicals, Tata Motors, Titan, Tata

Teleservices, Tata Capital, Tata Coffee, Tata Quality Management Services, Tata Medical Center and the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust for a period of two-months. The areas of their projects ranged from the impact assessment of CS programmes at various Tata companies to sustainable livelihoods; perceptions about infection control at hospitals; safe drinking water; affirmative action; climate change programme evaluations; and road maps for a carbon neutral village (Please find attached Annexure 1: Tata ISES – 2013 project list). The programme structure of Tata ISES 2013 provided the interns with

grass-root level exposure to India and at the same time brought international perspectives and practices to these projects at Tata companies, promoting international understanding. One of the interns, Peter Myers, currently pursuing a M.A. in Development Practice from UC Berkley undertook a project at Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and worked in the district of Murshidabad, West Bengal with under-privileged children to gauge the impact of Integrated approach to Technology in Education (ITE) being deployed by the Trust with the objective of bridging the digital divide and

improving learning processes among the ‘have nots’ of the society. Describing his experience Myers said, “I got a real flavour in India for what local governments have thecapacity to provide for their people, and how that gap needs to be filled by private industry, NGOs, and organisations like the Tata trusts. Vital changes like education reform, if left only to the government, will not reach the current generation fast enough. The private sector is hugely important for helping that change, and the Tata trusts are a major part of the effort”. He further said, “My early career in international development has

already taken me to several places around the world. The experience that the Tata ISES programme has given me is important for my future work, both in terms of improving how well I understand situations from the sub-continent that will come across my desk, and in terms of giving me a leg up over other colleagues who haven't worked in such a key area as India.” Herbert Santo de Lima, currently pursuing MSc in Environment and Development from London School of Economics, interned with Tata Quality Management Services in Mumbai.

A

fter bringing international bands like Simple Plan, Karnivool and Porcupine Tree, the IIT Mumbai’s MoodIndigo festival this year brings the Neal Morse band to rock the occasion. The American band will have Neal Morse (vocals, guitars, synth), Mike Portnoy (drums, vocals), Randy George (bass, vocals), Eric Gillette (vocals, bass), and Bill Hubauer (synth, vocals). The band led by Neal Morse is yet another project of the popular guitarist and his partner from Flying Colors and Transatlantic Mike Portnoy. This will be the band’s first performance in India exclusively for Mood Indigo this December. When asked about the reasons behind their choice, Darpan Sanghavi, the Pronites Head says, “Our ideology this year was to get a band that interests all types of music listeners. With the Neal Morse band and Mike Portnoy coming together, we believe we have done precisely that”. Mike Portnoy, born in

New York, attended the Berklee College of Music on a scholarship in 1985 which is where he formed the band ‘Dream Theater’ with whom he sustained a successful career for 25 years, developing a tremendously devoted fan-base and record sales of almost 10 million copies worldwide. Mike’s long list of awards include 26 Modern Drummer Magazine Reader’s Poll Awards including Hall of Fame Inductee

in 2004, MVP of the Year in 2010, Best Progressive Rock Drummer (for the magazine’s record of 12 years in a row), Best Clinician (twice), Best Educational Video/DVD for Liquid Drum Theater, and Best Recorded Performance of the Year(7 times) for Dream Theater’s Awake, A Change of Seasons, Falling Into Infinity, Scenes From A Memory, Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, Score and Avenged Sevenfold’s Nightmare. With limited resources, the festival endeavors to bring the most popular band which is willing to come all the way to India. “So after last year, we didn’t want to reduce on the popularity scale and we wanted to go back to the good old progressive music.

Music check! Popularity check! We present to you Neal Morse and Mike Portnoy”, says an overwhelming Saksham Jain, the Pronites Head. Many prominent figures from the music industry have already sent their best wishes to the team. An excited Subir Malik, member of the well-known band Parikrama says, “It is great to see the Mood-I team making the festival one up year after year. This is amazing news and sure to crop up a storm in the industry. I am booking my ticket today!” Mood-Indigo is tagged as the biggest and most popular college festival in India. It not only brings down college students for various competitions from all over India but also from across the globe.

“The art of teaching is the art of assisting discovery” By Grace Pinto Managing Director, Ryan Group of Institutions

T

hese words of Mark Van Doren beautifully summarise the significant and valuable role teachers have to play in society. Every child is blessed with unlimited potential, and teachers are the ones who transform them into self-reliant and self-assured citizens of the world. Right from ancient times, the role of a teacher has been constantly evolving as the education system itself is undergoing change. Today, the role of a teacher has changed from formal to being informal, one that has considerably reduced the distance between the pupils and the teacher. However, analyzing the education system in every milieu, it can be said that a teacher has been a significant factor all through the various ages. It is because of a teacher, understanding of things change, knowledge grows and ultimately the child grows as a holistic person.

Plato in his book Republic said, “You know that the beginning is the most important part of any work, especially in the case of a young and tender thing; for that is the time at which the character is being formed and the desired impression is more readily taken”. Keeping this in mind, the role of a pre-primary and primary teacher is very important. The impressions that they create on the young minds remain for the rest of the years. Every teacher, therefore, must believe that being a teacher is a special calling and do justice to it. Gentle words of wisdom and encouragement, positive impressions will not only help students to grow intellectually but also emotionally and spiritually. With technology pervading the present education system, teachers today are left with no other options other than to equip themselves adequately. Teachers, today, have to be visionaries, be information and technology savvy to cope up with high expectations of the students, with multiple tasks of teaching, researching and being the resource persons in consonance with the changing times. Indeed, it

is an enormous task to be committed to their noble profession so that students receive the best to be lifelong learners and be prepared for the future. September 5, the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, is a special day that is dedicated to all our beloved teachers; to remember and thank them for their sacrifice. It is a day when one can look back, admire and get inspired by the lives of teachers that have influenced thousands of minds. On this Teachers’ Day, I urge all teachers to rededicate themselves to the cause of education with a passion to empower the young generation. Remember that God is not unjust; He will not forget your work and the love you have shown Him as you have helped His people and continue to help them. (Hebrews 6:10). God will reward your sincere hard work. Your sacrifice and hard work means a lot to the children and to their parents. Teachers, you are the hope of every student and with your encouragement and help one day he/she will celebrate his/her life of success and happiness. PM leaves for G20 summit in Russia

N

EW DELHI: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh leaves for St. Petersburg on Wednesday to attend the eighth G20 Summit during which he is expected to push for a coordinated plan to avoid disruption in India and other large developing economies by imminent phasing out of fiscal stimulus by US Federal Reserve. While the dispute between Russia and the US over the conflict in Syria is likely to overshadow the two-day summit starting Thursday in the Russian city, splits between emerging markets and the US over its winding down of stimulus and the slowing growth of India and other four BRICS countries are expected to remain in focus. Brazil, India, Russia, China and South Africa -- grouped in the informal BRICS bloc seen as an alternative economic powerhouse -- all go into the meeting experienc-

PM Manmohan Singh ing slowing growth, embattled currencies and huge capital outflows. The Indian rupee has lost one-fifth of its value against the US dollar this year following major capital outflows triggered mainly due to the moves by the Fed Reserve. India is also suffering a

decade-low growth and GDP rose just 4.4 per cent in the first quarter this fiscal, the weakest performance since 2009. There has been deep concern in BRICS bloc over the plans to wind down the programme of quantitative easing(QE) which helped their economies expand fast in the last few years after it was launched in the midst of the financial crisis in 2008. Singh had said he would urge the G20 to formulate a coordinated plan to ensure that the winding down of the cheap money policy in the US, under which the Fed buys bonds worth US $85 billion every month, doesn't cause massive disruption in the economies of the developing nations. Singh, who has attended all the previous G20 summits since the first meet in Washington in 2008, is due to return home on Saturday.

ODHPUR: Self-styled godman Asaram Bapu yesterday refuted the rape charge against him by a 16year-old girl, saying her medical report does not support her allegation as the court put off till Wednesday’s hearing on his bail plea. Asaram, 72, was sent to jail on Monday after he was remanded in 14-day judicial custody by a court here. Asaram was arrested in Indore following an FIR lodged by the victim that she was sexually assaulted by him. Asaram's counsel K.K. Menon, arguing on his bail plea before District and Sessions Judge (Rural) Manoj Kumar Vyas, alleged that the police had worked under the pressure of media and prepared FIR in a hurry. After hearing for two hours the arguments by the defence, the magistrate said the hearing in the case will continue tomorrow and prosecution would be heard. Menon later told PTI, "The FIR against Asaram does not stand as there are several lacunae in it." "There were some additional inputs in the FIR after MLC (Medico Legal Certificate) conducted on the victim. MLC report does not support the statements made by the girl. Hence, the case does not fall under section 376 (rape charge) of IPC...Outraging of modesty is not attracted...It is bailable, and bail should be granted to my client," he said. Asaram was not brought to the court from Jodhpur Cen-

ASHIK: Ten youngsters, including four girls, working as trainees in a company were on Tuesday arrested for allegedly driving their 19-yearold female colleague to suicide. The victim, Pranali Pradeep Rahane, a resident of Indira Nagar locality, had allegedly tried to end her life on Sunday night. She was rushed to a hospital where she succumbed to her injuries at a hospital on Tuesday. She worked as a trainee in a Satpur-based company and was allegedly harassed and ragged by 10 trainees, including four girls, continuously. Fed up with this, Pranali on Sunday night first slashed her wrist and then hanged herself

from a ceiling fan at her house when she was alone. Later, her father Pradeep Rahane, a plumber by profession, found her hanging and immediately rushed her to a hospital where she died yesterday. The girl left a note which purportedly mentioned that she was harassed and ragged by her colleagues which prompted her to take the extreme step. The note was handed over to the police by the deceased's father. Police have booked the ten accused under section 306 (abetment of suicide) of the IPC and section 4 of Maharashtra Ragging Act. The victim's father alleged that her daughter was bright and she

was selected to go to Germany for further training by the company. Her colleagues were jealous of her and, therefore, they used to harass her. The accused and the victim were doing apprenticeship at the company following completion of industrial training after passing from Class X. The ten arrested accused, all in the age group of 18-19 years, have been identified as -- Bhooshan Paradeshi, Abhijit Bhor, Vishal Korade, Amit Pawar, Swapnil Sonawane, Shweta Shinde, Tejaswini Birari, Shubhada Kajale, Neha Sonawane and Harshal Patil. EW DELHI: The demand for turning Hyderabad into a Union Territory on the lines of Chandigarh and make it the joint capital of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana may be considered by the government. The inclination to consider the demand in the top echelons of the government came following continuous protests by both Congress and TDP MPs from the Seemandhra region and opposition to any division of Andhra Pradesh, sources told PTI. However, a decision has not been taken on it, they said. Such a move would also assuage the feeling of deprivation among the people of Seemandhra region after the Centre's decision to create Telangana by carving out of Andhra Pradesh and making Hyderabad joint capital only for 10 years, sources said.

ARIES (March 21 - April 20): Work seems to be in control and you can concentrate on other areas of your life. You will be entertaining friends and relatives. Try to keep a check on the undercurrents of tension. Keep a low profile and avoid getting embroiled in any family arguments, or gossip, in your own interest.

TAURUS (April 21 - May 20): You will get opportunity to explore fresh areas with the able assistance of a close friend. You will feel inclined to seek a change in your job or if in business. This is the right time to bring about radical changes in your career before you get stagnated. Your family will support you in your every endeavor.

GEMINI (May 21 - June 20): At work or in your business, you will be in a position of advantage. You can now put your new plans into action, for others will be willing to support you. Those desirous of a change of residence will come across a good bargain. Family life is happy and congenial. You can look forward to good times in love life. However try to reassure your mate by being more expressive and indulgent.

CANCER (June 21 - July 21): You will have to pay attention to work on hand as you seem to be unable to meet set deadlines. You will be tied up with documents, articles or public appearances and presentations. You may desperately need a break from routine. It is bad economics to seek change or take a break right now.

LEO (July 22 - August 21): Money matters are very good. Social engagements and business meetings are bound to have encouraging results. New alliances made now will prove lasting and profitable. You will be able to combine business with pleasure. A journey for work or religious function is likely and will be fruitful.

VIRGO (August 22 - September 21): New developments around you will make you optimistic and enthusiastic about your future and career growth. You will be working with great determination and sincerity, which will win you the support of others. Those traveling for work will have a successful journey. News from distant places is good.

LIBRA (September 22 - October 22): Travel on a business tour to an important centre is likely and will prove profitable. Try to explore new regions previously not visited. The employed are likely to receive job offers from an organization that has been their client for long. Think twice for it may not be a good idea to change. Personal life runs smoothly, though you will miss moments of leisure and romance in the company of your beloved. A journey for work or religious function will be fruitful.

SCORPIO (October 23 - November 21): A turn of events might require you to travel perhaps to see a family member or you may have unexpected visitors at home from out of town quite suddenly. Try not to get involved in any discussions that could create problems for you. Accept rather than change things for what you would like them to be.

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 December 20): You are wasting your time doing trivial things that do not add up to much. Wait for that big offer of work that is bound to come your way. Personal life could get complicated because of a discussion with a loved one who may not agree with your point of view. Do not push your luck as it may not be appreciated causing a rift in your association.

CAPRICORN (December 21 - January 19): A favorable piece of news is likely. Those doing specialized training or a technical course will get an opportunity coming their way. Gains that were expected from a career change will be conveyed to you. However this may entail a change of environment, which you will have to consider. You have a good bond with your mate. But a development today could create a few doubts and suspicion. You will find a way out with renewed trust and faith in each other.

AQUARIUS (January 20 - February 18): You will be in a positive and aggressive frame of mind. Completing reports, preparing for meeting or seminar or exhibition, sale and purchase, are some of the activities of the day. At a get-together this evening you may be in a flirtatious mood. You could harm an important relationship quite innocently.

PISCES (February 19 - March 20): Financially you are doing extremely well for yourself. You will be inundated with more work than you can handle and have to work hard to finish all that you have set out to do. You will have the support of your mate and loved ones. You will be bringing about some necessary changes at your residence or office.

Sharan bows out of US Open

FLIGHT OF FEDEX CRASHES

Federer stunned while Nadal rolls on at US Open; Pennetta, Hantuchova enter quarters

N

EW YORK: Roger Federer crashed out of the US Open in the fourth round while Rafael Nadal captured his 19th hardcourt win in a row to reach the quarter-finals without having allowed a service break. Federer suffered a stunning upset at the hands of Spanish 19th seed Tommy Robredo, whose 7-6 (7/3), 63, 6-4 shocker yesterday was his first victory in 11 matches against the 17time Grand Slam champion and fivetime US Open winner. "I'm going to feel like I beat myself," Federer said. "It was up to me to make the difference and I just couldn't. I self-destructed, which is really disappointing. When things came to the crunch I just couldn't do it. It's frustrating." Federer's failure, which came on the heels of a shock second-round Wimbledon exit, thwarted a potential quarter-final match with 12-time Grand Slam winner Nadal in what would have been their first meeting on the New York hardcourts. "If I'm playing like this, I'm not going to beat Rafa," Federer said. This was the first year since 2002 that Federer has not made a Grand Slam final. Instead, it will be Robredo in his first US Open quarter-final against second-seeded countryman Nadal, who dispatched Germany's 22ndseeded Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-7 (4/7), 6-4, 6-3, 6-1. "It was very tough conditions, very humid. I sweat too much," Nadal said. "But the opponent was great. Lucky to be through I think. I fought a lot to get through this match."

Nadal leads the ATP with nine titles this season and a 56-3 record since ending a seven-month injury layoff last February, his sore knees having kept him out of last year's US Open. Nadal has won all six career meetings with Robredo, but Federer was 10-0 against Robredo before being sent home. "He will come to my match with big confidence," Nadal said. "I hope to be ready for that." Robredo suffered seven prior fourth-round US Open defeats and

matched his best Grand Slam performance with the dramatic upset. "To beat Roger, it's something amazing," Robredo said. "It's like a dream. I am so happy. It was a great day." Spanish fourth seed David Ferrer reached his eighth consecutive Grand Slam quarter-final, beating Serbian 18th seed Janko Tipsarevic 76 (7/2), 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7/3). Ferrer will face French eighth seed Richard Gasquet, who outlasted 10th seed Milos Raonic 6-7 (4/7), 7-6 (7/4), 2-6, 7-6

(11/9), 7-5 after four hours and 40 minutes and despite the Canadian's 39 aces, the third-most ever in a US Open match. Ferrer is 8-1 all-time against Gasquet, whose only prior fourth-round Slam win in 17 attempts came on his way to a 2007Wimbledon semi-final. In taking as many sets off Federer as he had in 10 prior losses combined, Robredo also raised questions about the future of the former world number one, who had not missed the US

Thirty for success as US Open quarters go senior

NEW YORK: Life-long friends Roberta Vinci and Flavia Pennetta as well as Daniela Hantuchova reached the US Open quarter-finals to ensure five women over the age of 30 will be in the last eight. Vinci, the 10th seed, beat compatriot and qualifier Camila Giorgi 6-4, 6-2 to reach the quarters for a second successive year yesterday. Pennetta, now at 83 in the world, made the last eight for a fourth time with a 6-2, 7-6 (7/3) win over Romanian 21st seed Simona Halep and will tackle childhood friend Vinci with a place in a major semi-final for the first time at stake. Slovakia's Hantuchova, who last made the quarter-finals as a teenager in 2002, saw off American wildcard Alison Riske 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 on the back of 15 aces and 46 winners. "Roberta and I shared a room for four years. She's like a sister," said former world number 10 Pennetta, who

Roberta Vinci reacts after beating Camila Giorgi during the fourth round of the 2013 U.S. Open.

splits a 4-4 career record with Vinci. "I think it's going to be a really tough match for both of us. We know each other really well. I have known her for 20 years or more, we lived just

35, 45 kilometers away from each other. So is going to be really nice for us because one of us is going to have the chance to be in the semi-finals." Monday's events were hard luck on Halep, who came into the tournament having won four titles on the tour this year. She was hoping to be the first Romanian in the quarterfinals since Irina Spirlea in 1997. Halep was serving at 5-4 in the second set with a set point when torrential rain caused a suspension of play for more than four hours. When they returned to the Louis Armstrong Stadium court, Halep's composure was shattered and Pennetta hit back before racing through the tie-breaker for victory. Vinci recovered from 1-4 down in the first set to race away with 11 of the next 13 games to beat world number 136 Giorgi, who had stunned former number one Caroline Wozniacki in the third round.

EW YORK: Divij Sharan's US Open came to an end after the Indian and his Chinese Taipei partner Yen-Hsun Lu went down fighting to Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi and Jean-Julien Rojer in the men's doubles third round here. Sharan and Lu lost 6-7 (6) 6-3 36 to the fifth seeded PakistaniDutch combination. Qureshi and Rojer's booming serve gave them the upperhand in then opening set as they sent down as many as six aces against none by their rivals. Even though Shara and Lu were better than Qureshi and Rojer in the unforced errors department but eventually the fifth seeds clinched the initiative by not letting it slip despite their rivals' stiff resistance. With a better first serve percentage, Sharan and Lu roared back in the second set with a dominating performance during which they broke Qureshi and Rojer once. The Pakistani-Dutch combo was, however, guilty of frittering away three break points during the second set. But they turned the tables in the deciding set by breaking Sharan and Lu once while not conceding a single break point themselves to seal the issue in their favour.

Open quarter-finals since a 2003 fourth-round exit. Federer, 32, won only two of 16 break-point chances. "I'm delighted. Today the difference is I won the break points and he did not," said Robredo. Federer, whose seventh seeding at the US Open was his lowest at a Grand Slam event since 2002, hit 45 winners but also made 43 unforced errors and managed only five aces. "I started badly," Federer said. "But I struggled throughout, which is not very satisfying. I missed so many opportunities. Rhythm was off. When those things happen, clearly it's always going to be difficult." Federer had made 36 consecutive Grand Slam quarter-final appearances before being upset by Ukrainian Sergiy Stakhovsky in the second round at Wimbledon, having not departed a major before the last eight since the 2004 French Open. A rain delay of more than four hours pushed his match from Arthur Ashe Stadium to Louis Armstrong Stadium, his first match there since 2006. He had not lost there since suffering his first US Open loss back in 2000. Federer had made eight career comebacks to win after dropping the first two sets but he failed on five break points in the fourth game of the third set and there was a sense a comeback chance had been squandered. Robredo, 31, broke at love in the seventh game for a 4-3 edge and they held to set up the final game, fans chanting, "Let's Go Roger" in vain hopes of willing the wilting onceking to a rally for the ages, only to watch as Robredo held again to win in two hours and 24 minutes.

MUMBAI TIGERS PULL OUT OF I-LEAGUE

SPORTS

EW DELHI: The I-League this season will have 13 teams instead of 14 after Mumbai Tigers today pulled out of the country's premier football tournament in a surprise move. Mumbai Tigers, owned by Dubai-based Dodsal Group, was roped in by the All India Football Federation with much fanfare as one of the two new teams in the league. The sudden move came less then 20 days before the start of the league. "Citing unavoidable circumstances, Mumbai Tigers have decided not to take part in

the 2013-14 Season of I-League, requesting further for their involvement in the 2nd Division League for this season," the AIFF said in a statement. "The Mumbai based Club informed the AIFF that they are not ready at the moment to participate in the First Division and need more time to prepare for participation in the I-League," it said. I-League Chief Executive told PTI that the league will now have just 13 teams. "We did not have any idea that this could be coming. Suddenly they (Mumbai Tigers) sent a letter to us that

they are not ready to play in the ILeague this season. Only 13 teams will be there in the ILeague this year," he said. He said there would not be any need to draw a new I-League schedule after the pull out by Mumbai Tigers. "There will be no need for new fixtures to be prepared. Those matches involving Mumbai Tigers will be removed in the schedule already drawn up," Dhar said. Asked about the Rs 3 crore to be given each year by the club to the AIFF for fielding its team in the I-League, Dhar said, "The

money was not to be given to the AIFF. It was to be invested by the club for infrastructure development." Asked if the AIFF would take action against Mumbai Tigers for pulling out of the I-League, Dhar said, "That is for the AIFF Executive Committee to decide." In a bid to bring in corporates to Indian football, the AIFF had allowed Jindal Steel Works and Dodsal Group to field teams in the I-League from this year onwards. JSW has recently launched Bengaluru Football Club to play in the I-League.

Chhetri injury-time goal gives India 1-1 draw against Bangla — were also shown yellow cards by the referee. India were better side in the first half as Koevermans’ boys kept the proceedings under control early on. They kept the ball, switched flanks and pressed for a early goal. It resulted in a flurry of chances which went abegging. The first chance came in the eighth minute when an overlapping Nirmal Chettri found Francis Fernandes on the right. Francis, who was impressive with his timely runs, sped past Waly Faisal and essayed a centre but an unmarked Chhetri’s volley just went over. UMBAI: A young Sports Authority of India (SAI) came up with a lionhearted performance to force a 4-4 draw with Indian Navy in a fast-paced and thrilling Super Division encounter of the Mumbai Hockey Association Limited (MHAL) League 2013, played at the MHAL Stadium, Churchgate, on Tuesday evening. Leading the SAI charge was their skipper Manpreet Singh, who not only marshalled the midfield brilliantly, but also produced two goals, the second coming with just two minutes remaining in the match to bring cheer for the youngsters from Kandivali. Jatinder Singh and Mahendra K netted the other two goals. For last year’s runners-up, Indian Navy, Heera Singh, Ved Prakash, Faheen Khan and captain Surender Kumar were responsible in getting their goals. The scores were tied 1-1 at the end of the first half and seven of the eight goals were superb field efforts while only Navy’s fourth goal came through a penalty corner. The match started off on a rousing note as both side played an open attacking game. The SAI outfit exhibited good skills and understanding as they rose to match their more senior opponents in almost every department. On the other hand, Navy have themselves to blame as they messed up quite a number of chances. They SAI goalkeeper Naresh Chaudhari, who excelled under bar, proved quite a hard nut to crack and on many occasions the Navy players were unable to beat him from close. After the two teams had a couple of attempts at either end the Sailor struck in the 16th minute when Heera Singh scored with a reverse hit from an assist from Mohit Singh Thakur. Unfazed by that setback SAI fought

After the change of ends, SAI jumped into the lead when Manpreet scored after a superb run down the right flank by Jatinder in the 48th minute. Later Navy scored two quick goals through Ved Prakash 52nd minute and Faheen Khan three minutes later to lead 3-2. SAI once again neutralised the lead through Mahendra K’s strike in the 63rd

minute before Navy yet again went up when Surender Kumar found success from their sixth and final short corner of the match in the 66th minute. But just when it seemed curtains for SAI, Manpreet fired home the equaliser in the 68th minute. Results: Indian Navy 4 (Heera Singh 16th min, Ved Prakash 51st min, Faheen Khan 55th min, Surender Kumar 66th min) drew with Sports Authority of India 4 (Jatinder Singh 26th min, Manpreet Singh 48th min & 68th min, Mahendra K 63rd ).

Kirsten is chief coach of Daredevils

India A reach 94-2 in reply to NZ A’s 437 V

Newly-appointed Delhi Daredevils' coach Gary Kirsten along with Assistant Coach Eric Simons (L) and Team Mentor T A Sekar (R) in Hyderabad on Tuesday.

H

YDERABAD: Former India coach Gary Kirsten was appointed chief coach of the Delhi Daredevils for the seventh season of the Indian Premier League. The 45-year-old South African, who guided the national team to World Cup triumph in 2011 apart from taking the Test side to the No.1 spot, has been roped in to turn the fortunes of one of the most popular franchises in the IPL after their disastrous eighthplace finish in the last season. However, the support staff will remain intact with Eric Simons now working as an assistant coach alongside his close friend while TA Sekar continues to be the Team Mentor. Mushtaq Ahmed is also expected to be the spin consultant once again. “It is indeed a massive privilege to work with the Delhi Daredevils side after having worked with two international sides (India and South Africa). I

have always maintained that building a quality side is a process and I am looking forward to taking up this new challenge in franchise cricket,” Kirsten told mediapersons here. Kirsten admitted that it was through his “old friend” Simons that he was offered the role of chief coach. “I was recommended by Mr Simons and after having a chat with the owners, I found them to be good people. My job will be to help the boys perform to the best of their abilities. Also having Simons around helps a lot as we go back a long way and complement each other really well.” “The IPL at this stage of my career is a perfect thing to have happened considering the commitments I have towards my family. They are my priority and devoting three months a year is fine for me,” the soft-spoken gutsy opener of yesteryears explained.

ISAKHAPATNAM: Vasudevan Jagadeesh (40) and Manprit Juneja (43) stitched an unbeaten 78-run stand to help India A reach 94 for two at stumps on the day two of the second and final unofficial ‘Test’ against New Zealand A at Dr YS Rajasekhara Reddy Stadium here today. India A still have an uphill task at hands as the hosts are trailing by 343 runs with eight wickets remaining in their first innings. Earlier today, New Zealand after resuming their first innings at 300 for eight, added another 137 runs before getting dismissed for 437 in 121.1 overs. Overnight batsmen Doug Bracewell (96) and Ish Sodhi (57) put on 162 runs for the eight wicket to take New Zealand A to a commanding position in the final four-day match. The Indian bowlers failed to make inroads even as Bracewell and Sodhi went about their business with ease. After 31.3 overs, Abhishek Nayar finally brought the breakthrough when he cleaned up Bracewell with the batsmen just four runs short of a century. Bracewell had 11 fours and a six in his 132-ball innings. Pacer Dhawal Kulkarni then picked up Sodhi in his first delivery of the next over to bring New Zealand A’s innings to an end. Sodhi played a very patient innings as in his 142-ball 57 included just three boundaries. With New Zealanders piling up a massive score, a lot was expected from Unmukt Chand, who had captained India Under-19 to victory in the 2012 World Cup. But the opener made just four runs before he was sent packing by Mark Gillespie in the fifth over of the India A’s innings. Centurion of the last match, young Vijay Zol too could not continue his good form and was dismissed by Bracewell in the 13th over with India A reeling at 16 for two.

Only one review per innings should be allowed in DRS: Cairns

BANGALORE: Former New Zealand all-rounder Chris Cairns feels the Umpire Decision Review System should be restricted to just one usage per innings to prevent it from becoming a “crutch”. “The DRS is something that helps the game but I think it needs to be used not as a crutch in the game. I would actually have one review per innings because it is there to stop a very bad decision,” he added. The DRS has been controversial since its inception and has drawn mixed reactions in international cricket. India has been among the staunch opposers of the system. Currently, teams are allowed two unsuccessful appeals in an innings. Talking about the poor form of New Zealand, Cairns said the team has been disappointing in every form of the game but hoped it would climb up the rankings in next three years.

Decision on Yogeshwar’s return to action in 3-4 weeks: Doctor

NEW DELHI: The doctor treating Yogeshwar Dutt’s recurring knee problem said that the Olympic medallist wrestler was recovering from his injury and the timing of his return to action would be decided later in the month. The 30-year-old wrestler, who suffered a MCL (medial collateral ligament) tear in his right knee in July, was forced out of the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary but would be flying off to join the team for a coaching camp ahead of the marquee event from September 16-22. “Yogeshwar’s right knee has suffered an ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) and MCL tear before and were operated. He recently suffered an MCL tear again. We were contemplating a surgery for it. But last week, we found that the injury has considerably healed so we decided against it,” said Dinshaw Pardiwala, who is the head of Centre for Sports Medicine at Mumbai’s Kokilaben Hospital.

CSA could lose R2.5 million a day from shortened India tour

JOHANNESBURG: Cricket South Africa (CSA) could lose up to 2.5 million rand a day in revenue if the Indian tour later this year is shortened, according to a media report. The Afrikaans daily Beeld quoted sources as saying that CSA stands to lose about R300 million in total if the India tour is shortened, particularly from TV broadcast rights. Sources also said that CSA is not in a position to take the matter to court, as India is yet to sign the ICC Future Tours Programme and would therefore not have to account if it shortened proposed tours and arranged others. CSA had announced that India would tour the country for three Tests, seven ODIs and two T20 matches between November 18 and January 25.
