hanks to five of Mumbai’s popular colleges not submitting the internal assessment marks, Mumbai University could not declare results for about 1,000 TYBCom students. Four of these five colleges happen to be M.V.L.U College (Andheri West), Lords Col-
lege (Malad East), G.R Patil College (Dombivali) and Dr Ambedkar College (Wadala). As matters stand, the teachers strike had already created too many uncertainties. It is not known why the five colleges had failed to submit the internal marks to the Mumbai University (MU), which had no option but to keep the results of the 1,000 students on hold, while declaring the results of the remaining
71,420 students. The ADC spoke to Dr Madhu Nair, Dean of Commerce, MU, who said, “Amongst the five colleges that had not submitted the marks, three gave us the marks only yesterday, while two have still to send the inputs to us.” When contacted, Dr Padma Deshmukh, Controller of Examinations, MU, said “I cannot say anything on this issue at this

On Tuesday, at around 12.30 in the afternoon, Sooraj was summoned by the Juhu police, who wanted to know what exactly had happened on Monday night. He was released after giving his statement and being told that he could be called anytime to the police station for interrogation, if required. The MU will be taking strict action against the colleges that have made the students suffer for nothing. The MU is looking into the issue seriously.”

“Some places just touch the heart at first sight and this one, little known and indescribable in words, happens to be the best amongst them,” says ADC’s Art Director and ‘rural tramp’ Rajan Ranshoor. With camera in hand and a penchant to hunt out travel gems in rural Maharashtra, he brings to life in pictures the Pandeshwar Temple, 56 kms from Pune at Jejuri, a place that, as he says brings ‘historic fantasy to life’.. Apart from being the most revered temple after Kashi in Hindu culture, the stone upon stone marvel boasts of architecture and sculpture that despite being centuries old, still stands tall today. Legend says it was built by the Pandavas by stealth during the night through their years in ‘Vanvas’ meaning forced exile. And while we might draw the line at believing this temple is five thousand years old, we can easily believe, as temple pujari Dalviji (featured above right) explained, that it could be the only temple in the world that hosts the “Shiva Linga” upon a throne. “See it to feel it” is Ranshoor’s advice.

60-yr-old animal rights activist fights against encroacher even as cops and Home Minister refuse to help her out
By A Staff Reporter
R
oxanne Davur is a 60-year-old animal rights activist living in Takve village in Taluka Karjat, District Raigad. She runs an animal shelter on her ancestral property. Since the last one-and-half year encroacher, Sandra Jhala, has squatted on her property and attacked her repeatedly. But the police have refused to act. The Tehsildar’s office has given a clear order of eviction in Roxanne’s favour but the police refuse to take action on the matter. In 2012, Jhala requested Roxanne to shelter her dogs as Jhala had shut down her own shelter in Ahmedabad to go and look after her terminally ill mother in Kolhapur. She came to settle the dogs down and never left. Jhala then began harassing Roxanne
with threats and extortion demands. Roxanne approached the police for help but Jhala had already paid the police station so they refused to entertain Roxanne’s complaints. After almost a year, a case was accepted by the new Senior Inspector, Dhas. The police then forwarded this matter to the Tehsildar. On learning about this, Jhala approached the media and got an article published in which she falsely claimed that she had paid Rs.8 lakhs and had a 99 year rent lease signed. These false claims were laid bare in the Tehsil court through an enquiry by a Court Commission. Thereafter, the Tehsildar passed an eviction order on Alexandra Jhala, who was an encroacher and declared that Roxanne Davur was the rightful owner of the property. But the Karjat Police and SP
Shinde Raigad refused to act on this order. This emboldened Jhala who has since then attacked Roxanne several times. Besides encroaching on her land (in violation of IPC sections 441, 442, 448, 449), Jhala has broken into her house (445), falsely used Roxanne’s address to get phone connections and bank accounts (465), has abused Roxanne verbally (504), tried extortion (384, 386, 327), threatened to kill Roxanne, her employees and animals (506 part 2), slandered Roxanne (500), attacked physically (323), attacked with iron rods (324), smashed Roxanne car with iron rods, has got men to stalk Roxanne (345 D), is getting more and more trespassers into the property (441, 442, 448, 449), and on June 1 Jhala and her employee hit Rox-
anne with bricks (324). Many of these are cognisable offences and Jhala and her accomplices should immediately be arrested. But the police refuse to act. It is believed that the police have failed to take action because the encroacher Jhala had initially paid the local police station but it is not known what power she has over them to enjoy this immunity. Moreover, the police, including senior officers, have displayed a very callous attitude towards Roxanne and they commonly use slurs like ‘pagal baavi’ or ‘yedi mhatari’ while referring to her. Roxanne Davur approached Aam Aadmi Party and when Preeti Sharma Menon of Aam Aadmi visited the police station in January 2013, the head constable threatened
to file a false FIR alleging that Preeti Sharma Menon had attempted to assault the police officer. This matter had been brought to S.P. Shinde’s notice and he had promised action against the Head Constable in 48 hours but nothing was done. AAP then approached I.G. (Konkan) Sukhvinder Singh but he did nothing either. “After the attack on June 1, where the police did not even turn up, despite several calls and messages to the SPI, the SP and the IG, I took the matter to Home Minister R.R. Patil. He called S.P. Shinde and asked him to arrest the attackers, but no avail. Yesterday, I was made to sit in the police station from 12 noon to 9.30 p.m. in the night but no FIR was filed and no arrests made,” said a distraught Roxanne.

Jaiprakash Singh, a central excise commissioner at Indore, is likely to come to the city on Thursday and make a formal demand for a CBI enquiry into his wife’s murder case. “The case was transferred to Mumbai crime branch on February 15 and we are yet to get any concrete outcome,” said Singh over the phone. He added that during the four months he was not even contacted by crime branch officials. “I have lost faith in Mumbai crime branch investigation. Anil Behrani was also given clean chit in the case. Who committed the crime then,” said Singh. “They (Mumbai crime branch) don’t even bother to update my family about the investigation,” said Singh while adding that last time he got a call was in April and that neither Singh nor his family has been contacted or updated about the progress of the enquiry. The case began when Sandhya Singh (50), a resident of NRI C omplex in Nerul, went missing on December 13 last year after she went to a bank to deposit her jewellery. The World Zoroastrian Congress is a forum for discussion on all issues pertaining to the Community, including social, economic, cultural and religious. There are academics and experts from other Communities who will share their knowledge and views as in past Congresses. In that, it is an open forum. The organizing Committee of the 10th World Zoroastrian Congress has received many queries whether non-Zoroastrian spouses of Parsi Iranian Zoroastrians and their children can register as delegates at the Congress. In light of the above, it stands to logic and reason that the Congress should not be exclusionary but be inclusive for all those who have an interest in the Community, its affairs and in its future. Accordingly, the organizing Committee has decided that non-Zoroastrian spouses and their children (16 years and above) can register as delegates for the Congress.

They had moved their bail applications on Tuesday morning after the metropolitan magistrate had remanded them to judicial custody till June 14. The lawyers of Vindoo and Meiyappan requested the court to grant bail to their clients, arguing that their custodial interrogation was not required. Meiyappan (35) was arrested on the night of May 24 for his alleged involvement in the IPL betting scandal. He was in the eye of a storm after actor and TV reality show winner, Vindoo, who arrested on May 22 for his alleged links with bookies, admitted to having placed bets on Meiyappan’s behalf. Senior counsel Satish Maneshinde, lawyer for Vindoo Dara Singh, said that they will seek compensation from the Bombay High Court. “The case under which my client was arrested is illegal and I think we should apply for compensation to the high court,” said
Maneshinde. He pointed out that there was no law presently against betting and it was wrong to parade the duo as the prime accused in the case. Maneshinde also pointed out that the duo was charged under sections that were bailable, and yet had been kept in custody for over a week. He hinted at a deeper conspiracy within the BCCI that had resulted in Vindoo and Meiyappan being arrested in a case registered in Mumbai. “This is the second time that, in a political war in the BCCI, such a case has been registered. It should not have been done,” he said. When asked about when they would seek compensation, he said they would decide that in due course. However, Meiyappan’s lawyer was more restrained and refused to comment on the matter of any deeper conspiracy involving the BCCI. The lawyer said that they had argued on the premise that there were no grounds to keep Meiyappan in custody and he had therefore been granted bail.

There were no bruises or injury marks on her body,” said Dr. T.P Lahane, Dean, J.J. Hospital where the autopsy took place on Tuesday. Time of death on Monday has been estimated to
be between 10 p.m. to 12 midnight and the body was brought to the state run hospital at around 8 a.m. on Tuesday. Also the post mortem procedure has been video recorded in this case. “We generally video record post mortem procedures for cases like female suicides, rapes etc because we have to send the report to the government. It is better to keep a record,” said Dr. Lahane.

Upon interrogation, it was revealed that the duo procured the duplicate regulators at Rs.120 per piece which they used to sell as originals at Rs.500 each. “The total cost of the 500 regulators has been estimated around Rs.4.5 lakh in the open market. But these regulators were of substandard quality and there was high risk involved if they were to be used,” said Majge. A representative of an HP gas agency in sector 3 in Nerul informed that consumers should always buy
regulators and pipes from their respective authorized agencies not from the open market. “A duplicate or substandard regulator can be dangerous as it gets blocked over the period of time and can catch fire in case of excessive heat,” he advised. he Indian Premier League (IPL) fixing controversy has sidetracked public attention from other scams of the UPA-II regime like 2G and Coalgate, and is being seen as a national corruption issue. Speaking to newspersons here, the BJP MP who is BJP national general secretary and in charge of Maharashtra, Rajiv Pratap Rudy stated that the party was opposed to the UPA issuing an ordinance to implement the Food Security bill and demanded that the monsoon session of the parliament should be preponed and the proposed law be debated threadbare. Replying to queries, he said that the bill concerned 60 per cent of the population and hence should not be hurried through. He stated that there were riders to the bill as the NCP was opposed to certain clauses. Declaring support to the bill, he said that the UPA should clear the internal differences over it. The government had pushed through the MNREGA, promising 100 days job for the rural poor, but after evaluation it was found that the scheme only provided for 28 days of work.

Ponder awhile… “Giving thanks never goes out of style.” — Carl Erskine
Held in contempt I
f there is one thing that needs no further establishing, it is the obvious contempt in which the authorities and indeed, everyone with money, muscle or political power, holds the general public of India. In Mumbai, financial capital of the country, where citizens pay taxes through their noses and live in some of the most expensive real estate in actual terms in the world, the government does not respond to demands for more transparency in land use policy. In the BMC, run on revenue raised through octroi and property taxes, the elected representatives who are supposed to represent us, do exactly as they please as they wring the coffers dry. Witness the way the road resurfacing contracts are decided in ten minutes and in the face of strong opposition. Skeletons are tumbling out of the BCCI with shocking regularity, and in the latest exposes, it is clear that our beloved captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni expects us to believe that there is no conflict of interest in signing up with a sports management company where he is the highest earner and which also manages other cricketers on whose futures he sits as a selector. He also does not think anyone can join the dots when it is revealed that he owned significant shares in the same company for the brief period in March this year. It helps that the former BCCI chief (who might well come back again, seeing how the BCCI seems to be fronted by a revolving door that lets Jagmohan Dalmiya in as it lets Srinivasan out), is M S Dhoni’s employer as well, but we are not supposed to believe that perhaps this is what ensured he was not sacked after India ‘s defeats by England and Australia. We are supposed to see nothing, hear nothing, but what is permitted. On Tuesday, in Cardiff for the ICC Champions Trophy, winning the shield must have seemed very sweet indeed. One scribe asked him to pose biting it, like Rafael Nadal has been shot. Dhoni said, “If you want tennis celebrations, go to Wimbledon. We do things our way.” One thing is for sure, “Our” does not include the Indian public. Cricket “royalty” has been shown time and again to do things “their” way. Cricket has long been reduced in this country to nautanki. Perhaps it is time to cut these nautanks down to size, and give them back a little of the contempt in which they seem to hold the ticket-buying, TRP creating public.

he political war in Chhattisgarh after the recent Naxal attack has taken a strange turn. A Congress versus BJP battle has become a Congress versus Congress internecine feud. The party has turned on itself following reports that the National Investigation Agency’s preliminary inquiries point to a Congress hand in the Naxal ambush that led to the death of 27 persons including top state leaders. The NIA’s needle of suspicion seems to be pointing at the faction led by former chief minister Ajit Jogi who, along with son Amit, was mysteriously absent when the convoy was ambushed by the Naxals on May 25. The revelations have sent tempers soaring and Congress workers are now venting their wrath on Jogi loyalists in different parts of the state. They’ve hunted them down, locked them into rooms and beaten them mercilessly with shoes and iron rods, leaving several badly injured. The fight followed Jogi loyalist and one of the two survivors of the attack, Congress MLA Kawasi Lakhma, to the corridors of the swanky Gurgaon hospital in which V C Shukla is being treated for the four gunshot wounds he sustained. Lakhma turned up to inquire about his condition and there, right outside the ICU where Shukla was lying, a Congress group led by union minister Charan Das Mahant, now the new state chief, waylaid him and beat him with shoes. There was complete pandemonium in what is supposed to be a silent zone but the hospital staff didn’t dare intervene as the two Congress factions tried to settle scores. Later, a bleeding Lakhma was handed over to the police who were instructed to dump him somewhere near Karnal. It is indeed odd that only two Congress leaders survived the Naxal attack: Lakhma and Gopi Madhwani. And both are considered to be close to Jogi. They stood by Jogi, the only ones to do so in a group of 51 Congress MLAs, when the chief minister of the newly created Chhattisgarh state was being appointed in 2000. Although he didn’t have the numbers, Jogi became the CM that year, thanks to Sonia Gandhi who had a soft spot for him. But now, his stars seem to be waning and those of arch rival Digvijaya Singh rising. Although from neighbouring Madhya

rothers, last week we discussed Arjuna’s state of despondency (vishad). Whenever there is Arjuna-like honesty, straightforwardness and total surrender to God, even a state of despondency attains the character of yoga. It is the churning of heart which brings this about. The First Chapter of the Gita has been called Arjuna-vishadyoga. I prefer to call it simply Vishad-yoga, as Arjuna provided only an occasion for the discourse. We see that the Lord stands to redeem us all, ignorant creatures as we are, held captive by the bonds of this-worldliness. Similarly, although Arjuna provided an immediate cause for the overflowing of the Lord’s compassion in the form of the Gita, it is really intended for all of us. That is why the general term vishad-yoga is more befitting for the Gita’s First Chapter. Beginning from this vishad-yoga the Gita’s teaching keeps on growing like a magnificent tree, finally bearing the fruit of prasad-yoga (God’s grace) in

BCCI meet ‘fixed’ and pre-orchestrated! THE ‘fixing’ saga continues in Indian cricket and the emergency BCCI meeting was pre-orchestrated and an eyewash to fool the public that everything is fine as far as cricket administration is concerned. Jagmohan Dalmiya’s elevation as stop-gap in charge of Board duties is ridiculous as N. Srinivasan would now run the show at BCCI through a ‘remote control’ as he has only stepped aside and not resigned from the post. Dissenting voices like those of Ajay Shirke, Sanjay Jagdale, Bindra have been silenced through majority vote as politics is now being played in the corridors of BCCI which would destroy Indian cricket in the long run. BCCI has reduced themselves to a private money minting club whose strings are in the hands of politicians and businessmen and cricketers are treated like dogs that have to obey the orders of their masters. — S.N. Kabra, Goregaon
APROPOS ‘Will this head roll?’ (ADC, May 25), the IPL 6 is blown with this revelation that it is not only the tainted trio (the three arrested cricketers) but there are many ‘off the field’ culprits involved thereby, no lesser than the son-in-law (read low) of the BCCI boss Srinivasan, caught redhanded. With every day passing each day we observe a new revelation involving the Bollywood personnel, the umpire and now the underworld. A section of the media revealed that the huge betting money is being conduited to the terror outfits in Pakistan and to the Middle East. It is high time that the Govt of India should intervene and find the culprits as it is causing national security concern. If the allegation of transfer of this illegally generated money (out of betting) by the bookies to the underworld is proved to be true, then this cricket league should be banned for ever. — Bikram Banerjea, Mumbai
BCCI has inflicted an body blow to the cause of cricket by letting Srinivasan to remain President and by making Mr. Dalmia, a sham working President. BCCI should have guts to oust Srinivasan if he was adamant about not vacating the chair of his own volition. With such timid action, probe into the whole murky scandal of spot fixing will not make
any conclusive headway. Srinivasan’s hand picked nominee Mr. Dalmia will not be able to turn tables on his master when the things will come to crunch. It’s surprising how come the majority of BCCI members allowed Srini to play his dirty game and get away with. Surely the whole drama has only one winner i.e. Srinivasan which essentially means that Indian cricket shall be a ‘puppet’ in his hands. A very sad day for Indian cricket. — Ashok Goswami, Mumbai
AND so, true to expectations, the Big Boss of the BCCI, N. Srinivasan, has proven to be a tougher nut to crack than even Yeddiurappa and has craftily taken the whole working committee for a ride, having the last laugh in the bargain — he refused to ‘step down’ and has only LETTER OF ‘stepped aside’, still THE DAY claiming, with his usual nonchalance, to hold the reins of the Board in his hands. He has only allowed a former president with a tainted past to run his office until the probe that he has ordered with his own men in the panel—and not the criminal investigation of the Mumbai Police—is over, with the proviso that he will be reinstated if nothing is found against him. For this unsavoury sequel to the high-voltage drama, only the disinterested handling of the matter by the members of the working committee, more like how the Delhi Police treat rape cases, has to be blamed. The emergency meeting should have been requisitioned by a few members and a new chairman to preside over the meeting should have been elected from among those present. — Dr. V. Subramanyan, Thane
THE recent meeting of BCCI on the question of resignation of Shri N. Srinivasan who was adamant not to resign, arrived at a solution, seemingly not logical though. What actually emerged and how the BCCI would now function is not clear as Shri. N. Srinivasan is said to have merely stepped aside and not actually resigned and Shri Dalmiya is only an interim president. Shri Srinivasan is advised not to discharge the functions of the president and hence it is not clear as to how the interim president can discharge the important functions. The situation is com-

AFTER all the hype, hoopla and hysteria about IPL 6 match-fixing and spot-fixing, Srinivasan was made a scapegoat as his son-inlaw was cynosure of all the action from the CSK side. Now everything is over and we think of educating players to tackle corruption. As in the past, BCCI just brushes aside charges and say that they do not have resources to tackle bookies. Access to the players was not monitored all along, giving scope to spot-fixing. Players were approached by bookies and the Board does not know what is going on under their noses. ALL along we heard of players playing according to the strategy designed by the coach, captain and the team management. But in IPL 6 everything was pre-planned. From the first ball bowled by Bret Lee in IPL 6, in which Unmukt Chand got bowled, to the last ball in the final at Eden Garden’s Kolkata all the matches and all the balls were fixed to get maximum out of the ‘Indian Pullout League’. The writing is on the wall. The way Kieron Pollard dropped three catches of consecutive balls and the Chennai Super Kings getting only has cinema been robbed of one of its finest talent, but the struggle for gender identity politics too has lost one of its most powerful and much loved voices and no one can take away his contribution. This is certainly a very sad and tragic moment for his family, film industry and entire Bengal. May his soul rest in peace! — Probir Kumar Bose, New Panvel

bowled out for 79, are all part of match fixing. Over and above there was spot-fixing as well. In the final, both Hussey and Raina perished early to show that the match was going very tough. In the end, Dhoni was allowed to hit out to show that he was fighting up to the end. Everything was a big drama on the field in front of paid spectators. Cricket fans, who have not witnessed a single match in this edition of IPL are the lucky ones.
As you sow, so shall you reap! I REFER to the letter by Mrs. Gooloo Mehta, Bandra, in your edition dt. June 3, where she has echoed the
Indian cricket captain? Cricket investigations reveal that a 15 per cent stake bought by Dhoni earlier this year in the sports marketing firm that manages him has spawned a tangled web of business associations, raising issues of propriety and conflict of interest in at least two situations. This puts Dhoni in the conflicting position where he has a 15 per cent share of the profits earned by Rhiti Sports from managing these four players, even as he opines or votes on them in team selection meetings as the Indian captain. There is definitely a conflict of interest in this case. — Jayanthy S. Maniam, Sion
SO ‘God No 10’ has retired from the IPL. That’s similar to how he ‘retired’ from ODIs. If you want to retire you should have the courage to announce it beforehand. One would have thought feelings of every law abiding citizen of Mumbai with reference to the innocence of Dr. Rustom Soonawalla, who has his clinic in Khar, and who has been trapped in a scheme of blackmail, extortion, defamation and coercion threats as he was an activist fighting against unlawful hawkers. Dr. Rustom has been a family doctor to many citizens of Mumbai and he has the healing touch of the famous Sonawalla name in the medical fraternity. Dr. Rustom can feel reassured of the strong support of all honest and law-abiding citizens of Mumbai. Is it a coincidence this same
that Tendulkar would have announced his retirement from ODIs soon after India won the World Cup. But that did not happen and he had to go without a farewell match in front of spectators. Now he has announced IPL retirement—would he have gone if Mumbai had NOT won? That’s the million dollar question. And IPL 6: Mumbai did not win it, Chennai lost it, whether deliberately or not, you decide. And Mumbai won without Tendulkar in the last four matches. And Ponting, the original captain virtually not playing any match. — T.R. Ramaswami, Kandivli
THE undesired outcome of the recent IPL cricket matches clearly indicate that this ‘Gentlemen’s game’ has now become the pothole of the criminals with the obvious, but hidden involvement of the politicians (read vested interests). Otherwise, how can a responsible leader of the nation like the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh say that the probe is going on, hence he can’t comment upon this menace? On the other hand, the people are also surprised to note since long that in any cricket match, whenever Sachin Tendulkar makes a century or any other ‘historic’ record, that particular match is indiscriminately lost. Why is it so? People don’t want any reply of this genuine, curious query from any politician, because nobody trusts them any longer. — Hansraj Bhat, Borivali
CAN anybody guess what is the most “immoral” act in our country...you probably have guessed it wrong. No, it’s not cheating or rape, neither is it robbery or murder; it’s actually asking someone to step down on “moral” grounds. When a Coalgate cannot make a PM budge from his seat nor does a CM resign after human massacre in his state how can you ask others to leave the comforts and step down from their high pedestal. We should not feel ashamed to accept (and the sooner we accept the better it is for we may then try to correct) that we just don’t breath pollution but also eat and drink corruption, making us thoroughly immune to all the wrongs happening around us. If BCCI president is to step down then all those who “allowed” him to own a franchisee in the IPL in 2008 also should step down...not on moral grounds but as a courtesy to the “request” of this cricket loving nation. — Abdul Monim, Vashi

Among those acquitted by the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate A N Sontakke are the then Under Secretary Vijay N Itkayal and other senior officials, including V D Valvi, V D Naik, S N Gavit and Lalita Itkiyal, other staffers of the Maharashtra government and of City and Industrial Development Corporation (Cidco),
besides some builders. According to prosecution, the officials, largely from Mantralaya, along with a Navi Mumbai-based builder floated Siti Tower cooperative housing society in 1999 and sought assistance of Rs.1.44 crore from the tribal development department to purchase a 16,000 sq ft plot in Nerul. The first instalment of Rs.92 lakh was released to the society in March 1999. However, an inquiry revealed that the housing society was not a registered body and the land that they claim to have purchased at Nerul was originally allot-
ted to 20 CIDCO gardeners at a subsidised rate for their housing project. Deputy Commissioner of Tribal Development, Thane, had registered the FIR in 2000 against 64 persons under various sections of Indian Penal Code for defrauding the state and under section 147 of the Co-operative Societies Act, 1960. The investigation in the case was carried out by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) and other agencies. Out of total 64 accused, three accused died during pendancy of the trial.

Hi, I want to pursue a career in plastic. What are the different things you can do in plastic. I am only in school right now. No love for the arts? Continued from pg 13 « and analyses. It is thus a highly challenging field that tests one’s analytical skills rather than test one’s memory as is otherwise believed.” Arts is therefore well-suited to those who have an interest in reading, in understanding the minutiae of a subject through extensive researching and who have a flair for English, or any other language for that matter. “I was always good at languages in school, especially English. It was only natural that I decided then to take up English as a primary subject of choice right from the beginning. My passion and understanding of the subject only grew as the college years went by.” states Yashaswini Iyer, a pre-primary teacher. For those students genuinely interested in scoping out the field, educational and career choices are innumerable. Students wanting to get into PR, advertising, journalism, communication, teaching, law, civil services, business management and even researching can think of taking up arts as their primary educational specialisation background. Prof. Muthukumar sums it up by saying, “Arts and humanities offer arrays of educational and career choices for those wanting to explore avenues away from the generally prevalent rat race.” These myriad educational options within the field however aren’t just confined to the English medium. The reach of the stream is quite extensive reaching out to various regional languages which make humanities and arts more relatable to those not traditionally from an English speaking background. In spite of these opportunities available for the students
to consider, there are however several problems that plague the field as it is offered to the student communities. Yashaswini states that though educational institutes are doing their best for students, at times, conflicts arise Prof. Marcellus D’Souza “The perception that arts is a ‘mugging’ stream or that the subjects within it are ‘boring’ has gone out of the window. The stream has broken the shackles of being a ‘girls only’ stream or being a stream for ‘those with low or less marks.’ Many men take up arts to pursue a degree and career in law, journalism and corporate training to name a few.”
Nishtha Tiwari, Career Counsellor “Times have changed. Dynamic changes in career options and growth in the field altogether have transformed arts into a multi-lane highway rather than a single lane road as it was perceived to be before.”
because of differences between subject choices available and subject choices desired by the students. She states, “The requirement to choose between certain groups of subjects always given in sets of three rather than choose simply one subject of one’s choice for the entire duration of the academic course is quite disappointing sometimes. It also puts pressure on the students to do well in the other subjects, which may or may not be to the liking of the student. At times, it could also affect the student’s performance in his subject of choice negatively. The educational varsities thus need to consider the students’ dilemma in such scenarios and need to address the situation to the best that they can.” However despite these slight misgivings, there is no denying that arts and humanities form the crux of various premium educational and career spectrums. The emergence of never-seen before avenues within the field has provided arts with the thrust and momentum that it rightfully deserves.

BUNK CLASS :
The downside of this season is that it often hinders you from socializing and going out. Take it positively and sit down to do something creative. Sit near your bedroom window and just watch the pitter-patter. If it doesn’t inspire you to sing, write or even paint, you’ll always remember it as time well-spent.
Do you live a considerable distance away from school or college? This would be the perfect time to play hookey! Your teacher will assume you couldn’t make it because of the flooded roads and generally dangerous road travel expected during this season. So do bunk class at least once, just for the sake of it.

WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY World Environment Day also know as WED is celebrated every year on June 5 in an effort to raise awareness of the need to take proper action to have a sustainable environment for the future. Established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972, every year WED is hosted by a different city and with a different theme. It is quite similar to Earth Day. This year the hosting country is Mongolia with the theme ‘Think.Eat.Save’. This aims to encourage people to be more conscious of the environmental impact of food choices people make, hoping to help them make more informed decisions.

My father expects me to take up the family business or do something ‘respectable’ like be a doctor. I have no aptitude for that kind of stuff and I’m afraid that if I attempt it I will only disappoint my parents more. I want to speak to them without raising any voices (My family is very temperamental) Should I speak to them together or individually? I am confused. Please help. Speak to like-minded members of your family first and try and garner some consensus before speaking to the rest at a go. Medical Council of India (MCI) registration An Indian student, who passes a MBBS degree from an overseas university, must pass an examination conducted by the MCI and complete internship of one year before he/she can practice as a doctor in India. The MCI examination is conducted in Delhi every six months. MBBS candidates prefer to join a coaching class for this examination which are conducted in Delhi. The coaching class fee is Rs 5,000/month. Normally two months coaching is adequate i.e. the coaching cost would be Rs.10,000. About 60 per cent of Indian students who passed out with a Chinese MBBS, have cleared the MCI examination in the first attempt. After passing the MCI examination, it is mandatory for the doctor to complete one year internship in India. Should the MBBS student enrol for an apprenticeship in Delhi, the MCI does not levy any charge. However, for doctors who complete the internship in a city other than Delhi, such individuals have to pay the MCI a fee of Rs.1 lakh prior to commencing the apprenticeship.

Yes, we had our favourite eating, meeting, and socialising places. In college, everyone was affluent. I had a simple group, we use to go home after lectures and I used to hang out with my building friends too. I use to spend a lot of time at pool and snooker parlours. I was very good at it and won many tournaments too. I used to eat vada pao instead of burgers as vada Pao was the only thing I could afford at that time. My friends were my kind of people… very content, simple and sweet. It was a group of ten students. We had a good time. We will cherish the memories of those days forever. I must tell you about a prank I played. I used to go for dance classes. It was April Fool day. I had my classes from 6.00 to 7.30, I asked some of my friends to play the role of a police man and scare my teacher. I told them to come to class and ask what is going on and behave little rudely and ask questions. I then went to talk to them and they slapped me. The moment they slapped me, my teacher was very scared and was almost on the verge of crying. Then I
told her it was an April Fool joke. Another anecdote I present was when I was attending lectures. There was a new girl in the group but I didn’t talk to her much. She was waiting down as she was late for the lectures. I came down as I was thrown out of the lectures for not having a book. There were two guys on a bike irritating her, I saw her and said ‘hi’, she came and stood behind me since they were asking her weird questions and even pushed me. I was a very short tempered guy. I just kicked their bike and tore their clothes. I had a lot of support from my teachers and classmates. I became a hero. Education is important. In the beginning it boosted me. I knew if I did not make it as an actor, I had an education qualification to back me up and could opt for another career if this one did not work. I have learnt diamond assorting and jewellery designing. Pretensions do not work. Lies do not help in life. Accept failures and success with a smile. It is part and parcel of your life. No one is perfect. As told to Monarose Sheila Pereira

Wristwatches: Now jewels of technology
With the advent of multinational companies trying to find a foothold in Indian markets and Indian companies wanting to explore international avenues, design and originality in innovation has become the need of the hour. This year Kyoorius has widened their umbrella of design awards to accommodate students of design as well. Srishti Jain, talks to Mr. Rajesh Kejriwal, Founder CEO, Kyoorius to discuss the motive of introducing these awards and the future of Indian design as he sees it.
T
oday innovative designs are seen as giving an edge to the owner. The unique finishing and ‘one of a kind’ tag that is labeled onto commodities across the market gives the consumer the gratification of being a class apart from the herd. Young designers are also making products and commodities that are more user –friendly, simplistic and attractive. They are the masterminds behind the beautification of our consumer world who redesign and add twists to products and essential commodities which have been a part of human life since times immemorial to make them suit the requirements of the time and age we live in like, ‘eco-friendly refrigerators’, ‘the solar car’ etc.
What led to the Inception of the Kyoorius Awards for Student Designers being conceptualized? The Kyoorius Awards for students came from a simple idea - to showcase what real talent can do for a real client with a real world brief. Students rarely have the chance to work and contribute to projects at large studios straight out of college. Kyoorius Awards provides them a platform to really exercise their creative muscle and be recognized for their thinking and approach - while being judged on the same platform as their peers - regardless of which college they come from.
« INTERVIEW
During the judging process the jury members will base their decision on three criteria, reviewing if the entry is an original and inspiring idea, well executed and finally if it is relevant to its context. They may also debate prior to choosing the final award. How well equipped are the design institutes of India to train the future generation in design, also what suggestions would you give to the design Institutes to improve their training? Design institutes in India have been evolving, some more rapidly than others. But most have not been able to keep pace with the change that the industry itself has undergone. Curriculums and syllabuses do need to evolve but they need to involve the real world in a more meaningful way. The MBA model is a great example of how the institute can bring in real world influence both from clients and professionals alike. But the responsibility does not lie solely with the institute. Alumni really need to get involved and give back to schools and help nurture future talent.
What is the next step for the Kyoorius Awards for Student Designers next year? Any future initiatives? Apart from the many initiatives that Kyoorius is building for the community as a whole, we are really excited about our efforts with the Do tell us about the various cate- tastic. his year at CES it was the turn of Smartwatches – timepieces that bring data from the Internet right onto your wrist – be it emails, Facebook messages, texts. This means more job opportunities and an ideal option for students to pursue their graduation or PG. The energy sector does play a powerful role in the growth of any nation. But unfortunately the availability of various energy resources has been deteriorating and the energy crisis has forced a whole lot of corporates and politicians to conserve existing energy resources and also develop alternate sources. This is where renewable energy and proper energy management will be an excellent career. Since the 80s many have been advocating green technologies such as solar systems, wind turbines and eco-buildings but have had a hard time. But all this will change this century as green power will become the buzz word. Today issues related to climate change and the fast declining global oil reserves have made corporates, politicians and the general public more aware. The demand for skilled personnel in the renewable energy industries is growing rapidly, more so abroad and many online job portals are offering a platform to recruit such industry professionals. So what’s renewable energy? As per the International Energy Agency, ‘Renewable
energy is derived from natural processes that are replenished constantly. In its various forms, it derives directly from the sun, or from heat generated deep within the earth. Included in the definition is electricity and heat generated from solar, wind, ocean, hydropower, biomass, geothermal resources and biofuels and hydrogen derived from renewable resources.’ Thus renewable energy is energy that comes from resources which are continually replenished such as sunlight, wind, rain, tides, waves and geothermal heat. According to a 2011 projection by the International Energy Agency, solar power generators may produce most of the world’s electricity within 50 years. Today renewable energy provides 19% of electricity generation worldwide. Mainstream renewable technologies are - Wind power, Hydropower, Solar energy, Biomass, Biofuel, Geothermal energy and Oceanogenic Power. Renewable energy replaces conventional fuels in four distinct areas: electricity generation, hot water/space heating, motor fuels, and rural (off-grid) energy services. In India the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy and the Bureau of Energy Efficiency are taking adequate steps to develop economically viable renewable energy and energy efficient systems. Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has set up four specialized centres
on solar energy, wind energy, bio-energy and hydro-energy. There are plenty of opportunities in renewable energy and energy efficiency sectors across the country. You could be a part of the green energy revolution - working towards the goals of a sustainable future as well as earning well. With a few years experience you can become an entrepreneur/ self-employed. There are numerous Colleges/ Universities providing B Sc, M Sc, M.Tech, M.Phil, Ph.D and distance learning. Some of the prominent ones are - School of Energy Studies, Department of Physics, University of Pune, Pune, Department of Physics, University of Lucknow, Lucknow, Department of Pure and Applied Physics, University of Kota, Kota, School of Energy Studies, IIT, Delhi, School of Energy and Environmental Studies, Devi Ahilya University, Indore, Department of Energy, Tezpur University, Tezpur, IIT Bombay, VIT University, Vellore, National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli, National Institute of Technology, Calicut, TERI University, New Delhi, Allahabad, University of Rajasthan, Jaipur, Kumaraguru College of Technology, Coimbatore, Annamalai University, Chennai. The city is very demanding. The work is too demanding and takes a toll on relationships. Although it is too premature to comment on her death, it is sad to see an aspiring actress who tasted success with her movies, slip in to a fall like this. Previously, also there were incidents of actors falling prey to the last option. I really doubt what can be the role of the government, but if anything can be done, it is for the family to do so, as they are your support system. People need to share things with their family and friends so people can help them come out of their depression. —Narender Yadav, Marketing Manager
The government publicizes counseling centres for students who are in the SSC and HSC. Recently, we have seen that many students have been using counseling centres which has risen in number. The state government should take a cue from such projects to create more awareness. But eventually, its in the hands of such people who are wasting their lives by committing suicide. I think the main issue is a lack of awareness. If people were properly educated on the mental state of mind that leads people to committing suicide, we would have better access to suicide hotlines and other forms of therapy. I think saying that starlets committing suicide will encourage young people to commit suicide is like saying starlets getting a fever will encourage young people to get a fever. Desiccated and dissipated, The eyes wandered through spaces, Beyond those iron grills. A pensive yearning, a desire so musing, they embodied. The world of her wishes, there once had been, Vanished, void and unadorned, Strange it seems. Yet the confines of her mind, So replete with memories, Denial is the only justification, To the past it gives.
Drifting beyond the colourless horizon, The disguised feelings, marched by her heavy eyelids. Days melted gloriously, Remembering those unforgettable evening treats. Anthems of days gone by, Are the songs she shuts out, now. Wishes upon those fire-lit stars, Across the Milky Way... Transcended time, escorting her to a land too far.
The rains lashed across the iron bars, The spell it broke; Filmy they have rendered those vibrant eyes... On the other side of the steel clad rods. With that crisp repartee, it all fell apart. Her present, confined. A hope burnt bright, extinguished sadly. The canvas she painted faded painfully. It silenced her, indefinitely. Muffled her, perpetually. The recent news of young starlet Jiah Khan committing suicide has shocked the people of Mumbai. Many wonder why such a young and beautiful girl was driven to take this extreme step. In the past years we have seen a marked increase in suicides in the city. ADC asks a few youngsters on whether the government should play a larger part in helping suicide-risk youth.

Gaura Devi's novel method of Van Satyagraha hogged international headlines and even the movement came to be named after this unique way of protest, he added. Drawing parallels between Devi and Wangari Mathai of Kenya who launched the Green Belt movement in Africa in 1977 to stop progressive degradation of forests, Badoni said just like Mathai was conferred Nobel Prize, the country's highest civilian honour should be conferred on Devi. Badoni also demanded freedom fighter status for those who participated in the Chipko movement at the grassroots. He said many of the agitators suffered police atrocities and had to go jail to save the forests during the agitation but they seem to have been forgotten. Badoni said such agitators should be identified and given the same facilities as enjoyed by freedom fighters. PTI

In a letter written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the eve of World Environment Day (June 5), Chipko Movement Memorial Foundation Convenor Ramraj Badoni said conferring the Bharat Ratna posthumously on Gaura Devi will be a fitting tribute to the woman who led a group of women of her village in the movement. NSE India: CNX Nifty — Daily Market Report for: Wednesday (June 5, 2013) (Based on the activity of the previous trading day) by Dominic Rebello
PEVIEW OF THE PREVIOUS DAY: The Nifty fell marginally on Tuesday (June 04, 2013) a net 19.85 points (0.33%) and closed at the 5919 point level. The market opened flat at the 5941 points level. It then rose sharply into the green and registered the day’s high at the 5981 points level at 10.33 a.m. The index then declined and turned into a range bound movement until 2.29 p.m. It then declined sharply into the red and registered the day’s low at the 5910 points level at 3.03 p.m. and then turned into a range bound movement until closing at the day. The Nifty moved in a range of 71 points. Sentiment turned bearish in the last hour of the session and amongst the 50 Nifty stocks 29 were losers, while 21 were gainers. Buying was seen in healthcare, capital goods, power and FMCG stocks, while selling was seen in consumer durables, banking, realty, auto, IT, metal, oil & gas and technology stocks. TECHNICAL ANALYSIS: Volume: Volume (Qty shares) decreased 1.79%. This change is small and indicates a moderate participation by investors.
Market Breadth: Overall Market Breadth on the NSE was neutral. Amongst all the traded stocks, 682 were gainers, 714 were losers and 61 remained unchanged.
Slow Stochastic Indicator: The Slow Stochastic Oscillator has declined and has entered the over-sold zone. The Slow K line in the Stochastic Oscillator is below the slow D line (negative if it continues).
RSI Indicator: The RSI is above the 40 level but is now declining (negative if it continues).
MACD Indicator: The MACD is above zero but is now declining (negative if it continues). It is below its 9-day Average (negative).
ADX Indicator & DI Lines: The +DI line is below the –DI line and both lines are turned flat. No signal here. The ADX is falling while the Market Index is falling, which indicates that the present down trend is decreasing in strength.
The next support is at the 5673 points level.
Resistance Levels: The immediate main resistance is at the 6156 points level. The next resistance is at the 6223 points level.
Pivot Point Analysi s: For intra-day traders the support and resistance levels are calculated according to the pivot point theory and are: Pivot point = 5937 (This is the level where the trend is likely to change during intra-day). Support (1) = 5893. Support (2) = 5866. Resistance (1) = 5964. Resistance (2) = 6008.
OUTLOOK FOR TODAY:
On Japanese candlestick patterns the index has formed a small black body candle with a long upper tail. A long upper tail indicates that the Bulls controlled part of the session but lost control by the end and the Bears made an impressive comeback. As such it indicates that the index was facing some selling pressure at higher levels. This candle also indicates the indecisiveness amongst investors. The next candle formation will confirm whether the bias is towards the buy or sell side of the market. However, the index is below the 5, 15 and 25 day’s moving averages, and all the three moving averages are declining. Further, the velocity parameters too are negatively trended. Both these indicate a negative bias and the possibility of a further decline unfolding. Investors are advised to avoid buying at present levels.
Work with strict stop losses on all positions
Moving Averages (Trend Indicators) The index: Is below its 5-day average (at 6014) Negative. Is below its 15-day average (at 6072) Negative. Is below its 25-day average (at 6053) Negative. Is above its 200-day average (at 5782) Positive.
Overall Market Strength/Weakness: The indicators and oscillators discussed here are indicating a weak market with a negative bias.
Support Levels: For short-term traders the immediate main support is at the 5867 points level.

Nirmal Bang calls a ‘Buy’ on Munjal Showa CMP: Rs. 63 Target Rs. 86
Munjal Showa Q4FY13 results witnessed an improvement on sequential basis with sales growing 1.7% QoQ and EBITDA margins improving to 8.2% vs 6.5% in Q3FY13. Lower interest expenses and lower tax rate continued to aid bottom line performance. The overall slowdown in the auto environment has led to a weak performance on the revenue front for the company. Going forward, overall environment is expected to be slightly better beginning from H2FY13 and management expects volume growth of around 8-9% in FY14E. Operational performance of has improved resulting from control over raw material cost and benefit on the forex side. Lower tax rates have also enabled the company to post a better show on the net level which we believe will continue going forward as well. Moreover, diversification to other OEMs, low gearing ratio, superior return ratios, stable margins, healthy dividend yield and support from the promoter group continues to be the key positives for the company. At CMP, the stock is trading at P/E of 3.35x FY14E earnings and 0.71x FY14E P/BV with an EV/EBITDA 1.86x on FY14E respectively. We expect RoE of 23.0% for FY14E. We maintain our BUY rating on the stock with a target price of Rs 86.
Dolat Capital calls a ‘Buy’ on Mahindra & Mahindra CMP: Rs. 984 Target Rs. 1110
Revenue up 12% YoY, led by 6% YoY volume growth: M&M reported top-line revenue at Rs104.8bn, up 12% YoY led by 6% YoY volume growth. The auto sector volumes grew 11% YoY, while tractor sales were down 4% YoY. Its utility vehicle market share is down from 55.6% in FY12 to 47.7% in FY13. View and valuation: We remain positive on M&M as it continues to post robust growth. The newly launched Quanto is also gaining momentum. Macro headwinds may affect the demand in the tractor segment. However, the management mentioned that they are seeing positive sentiments and the industry may grow beyond the guidance of 6-8% in FY14. Currently, we estimate tractor sales to grow at a CAGR of ~7% during FY13-15. The management mentioned that although they are not looking at any new brand launch in FY14 in the auto segment, the refreshes will continue to happen. Also, three new brands will be launched in FY15. A new brand will be launched in tractor segment in FY14. We expect its revenue to grow at a CAGR of ~12% during FY13-15 and EBIDTA to grow at ~14%. The stock is currently trading at a P/E of 14.1x FY15 standalone earnings. The subsidiaries add almost Rs180/- to the stock. We raise our target price from Rs 1050/- to Rs 1110/-. We recommend Accumulate.

Govt Devising Steps To Contain Gold Imports, Says Commerce Ministry By A Business Correspondent

xpressing concern over widening trade deficit, the Reserve Bank and the ministries concerned are devising steps to contain gold imports, Commerce Secretary S R Rao said yesterday. “Trade deficit is of concern to the government. But this is a step in which RBI, Finance Ministry and Commerce Ministry are involved. So, we are consulting. At the moment this is all I can say,” Rao said on the sidelines of an Assocham function in New Delhi reports PTI. He said the RBI has already put some restrictions on consignment imports of the banks. “So, we are seeing which way we need to move for-
ward now. We are examining...,” he added. In May this year, India’s gold imports have touched 162 tonnes. Gold imports in the country, the world’s largest consumer of the metal, stood at around 830 tonne in 2012-13. The surge in gold imports pushed up the trade deficit to USD 17.7 billion in April this year. The government said there will be corrective measures to check the alarming trend that has put huge pressure on current account deficit (CAD). The Financial Stability Development Council (FSDC), chaired by Finance Minister P Chidambaram, met yesterday and also discussed the concerns on gold imports.
“The Council noted with concern the significant increase in gold imports in recent months and deliberated on the issues involved in this regard,” the Finance Ministry had said in a statement after the meeting. Department of Economic Affairs Secretary Arvind Mayaram also had hinted that the government could take more steps to reduce gold imports, which may include banning sale of the precious metal by banks. “More steps will have to be taken to reduce gold imports. Export import policy on gold will have to be reviewed. May consider banning gold coin sale by banks,” he had said. The government and Reserve Bank have been taking steps to reduce gold import.
BUSINESS BRIEFS Biz Climate Improves In May
Business climate in the country improved last month buoyed by rising output of intermediate goods as well as tourist earnings and the government’s reform initiatives, according to a report. The ‘BluFin Business Cycle Indicator (BCI)’, which reflects various macroeconomic trends on a monthly basis, stood at 166.3 points in May, 5.8% higher compared to the same month last year, suggesting that the Indian economy is growing at a faster rate than the previous year. The year-on-year growth rate noted in the previous month was at 5.1%. Historically, the BCI has grown by an average of seven per cent year-on-year, financial information provider BluFin said. The government yesterday said it will soon notify the Special Economic Zones reforms which seek to ease land requirement norms and provide for an exit policy. “I think in a couple of weeks time rules will come out,” Commerce Secretary S R Rao told reporters on the sidelines of an Assocham function in New Delhi. In the supplementary Foreign Trade Policy (FTP), the government had announced these reforms. Once a major attraction for investors, SEZs lost sheen following imposition of MAT (Minimum Alternate Tax) and DDT (Dividend Distribution Tax), including certain provisions in the proposed direct tax regime (DTC), besides the global slowdown.
TCS Finland To Sack Up To 290 Employees
Tata Consultancy Services, may sack as many as 290 employees at its Finland office, a move that the workers say is an attempt to shift jobs to India. TCS, which has a registered office in Helsinki and has an employee strength of about 800 in Finland, is currently in negotiations with the employee representatives (ERs) over the move to cut jobs. The Union of Professional Engineers in Finland (UIL) claimed that the jobs at stake were about 412, a figure which TCS said was inaccurate. “If I remember... 412, I believe is the correct number,” UIL Director (Collective Bargaining) Ismo Kokko told PTI when asked about the number of jobs at stake in TCS. When contacted, a TCS spokesperson said: “The maximum number of roles affected is 290 and not the numbers you have mentioned, which are completely inaccurate.” Lay-offs may be less than even 290, some sources privy to TCS management thinking said. — Business Desk with inputs from PTI.

MUMBAI: New Hind Suryansh Shedge led from the front with a brilliant century stand of 114 as New Hind crafted an easy win over Cricket India Academy team A by 175 runs during the semi final match held at Kohinoor cricket academy ground on Tuesday. Shedge received good support from the all rounder Vedprakash Jaiswal 55*(20) and middle order batsmen Rugwed Jadhav scoring 24 (10) taking the team’s total to 229/3, the bowling department of CIA didn’t bowl in right areas and managed to pick only three wickets. The bowling star performer for New Hind Sports Club was Suranyash Shegde, with outstanding bowling figures 4-22. In the other semifinals, Shiv Sena won the match by seven wickets against MIG as Amit Wagh and Devkaran Verma bagged a brace.
UMBAI: Senior BCCI official Prof Ratnakar Shetty, who was banned for five years by the Mumbai Cricket Association, slammed the decision saying it was a personal vendetta and vowed to challenge it legally. "I have raised an issue at the AGM of the Association pertaining to the misuse of MCA funds and have done nothing wrong," said Shetty in a statement. "This is a personal vendatta by people who want to make sure that I do not contest the next elections and also because their ego was hurt that the two anti club resolutions proposed by the managing committee had to be taken back by the Chairman after he sensed the mood of the house after I raised the issue on behalf of the members," he said. "I will fight this kind of undemocratic decisions both within the association and legally," Shetty added. The seasoned administrator was banned for alleging that some MCA office-bearers could have sold the tickets for the T20 International between India and Pakistan played at Ahmedabad last December in the black market. "Yes. He has been banned for five years from representing any club under MCA's jurisdiction. It does not prevent him from coming to MCA's premises," MCA president Ravi Savant told PTI. ter," added Savant. The ban is effective till June 2, 2018 and Prof Shetty is to challenge it in a court of law. Shetty is the BCCI's General Manager, Game Development, and the Board's office is in the same building as the MCA at the Wankhede Stadium. Savant further said that the ban has been imposed for his allegations against some MCA officebearers, regarding a December 28 T20 match, which have been found untrue after the association conducted an inquiry. The decision to ban Shetty, who has been associated with the MCA for several years and served it in the capacity of committee member, secretary, treasurer and vice president, was taken on May 14 by the managing committee. The committee also gave Shetty additional time to listen to the video recording of the meeting and his allegations and then revert to the MCA, which he did a few days ago. The letter dated June 2 informing the imposition of the ban was delivered to him, it was learnt. Saying that his allegations had caused embarrassment to the MCA's office-bearers, the letter stated that the allegations levelled by Shetty "were found to be baseless on the perusal of documents available in the MCA records as well as subsequent confirmations of concerned members of the sister Association, who requisitioned and ac-
International Master Ravichandran Siddharth of Tamil Nadu during his match against GM Mchedlishvili Mikheil during the Mayor’s Cup in Mumbai.
M
UMBAI: International Master Ravichandran Siddharth of Tamil Nadu (ELO 2361) continued his good form by holding the top seed, GM Mchedlishvili Mikheil (ELO 2645) of Georgia to a draw in the ninth round of the Rs 21.5 lakh prize money sixth Mumbai Mayor International Chess Tournament held at the National Sports Club of India, here, on Monday. Playing on the first board, Ravichandran faced a Sicilian defense, for which he opted for closed variation. Pieces were
traded at regular intervals and the game ended in tame draw after 37 moves. Sameer Kathmale was in with a chance to earn his maiden Grandmaster norm had he won against GM Andriasian Zaven (ELO 2608) of Armenia, but though he fought hard, he ended on the losing side in the game of French Defense, which, however, helped him make his IM norm. Kathmale, playing with white, opted for the Tarrasch Variation against GM Zaven and on the 19th move created an opposite color Bishop ending. But GM
Zaven used all his experience to convert this ending, which seemed headed to a draw, into a win. There was more cheer for Indian players as IM VAV Rajesh (ELO 2343) and Swayansh Mishra defeated GM M Vadim (ELO 2552) of Belarus and GM Hossain Enamul (ELO 2487) of Bangladesh respectively. Meanwhile, GM Pantsulaia Levan (ELO 2563) of Georgia went into sole lead 7.5 points defeating GM Zubarev Alexander (ELO 2559) of Ukraine in 58 moves. The game between GM Levan and GM Zubarev started with the Reti opening, which later converted into English opening. With regular exchange of the pieces Levan had a slight advantage with his Bishop against the Knight. On the 47th move Zubarev made a passive move of his knight, which allowed Levan’s King to gain entry on the King side winning 2 pawns, thus creating a passer. Realizing the difficulty in stopping the pawn Zubarev accepted his defeat in 58 moves. In the Under 2100, Ramkrishna Perumalla (ELO 2086) is joined by Jalpan Bhat, leading with 8 points, followed by V S Negi, Snehal Bhosale and Yogit S with 7.5 points at the end of the ninth round.

cepted the tickets for that particular match and paid for the said tickets." The letter further stated that Shetty had been given a chance to furnish proof about his allegations with show cause notice and he had replied to it "in a very evasive manner" and did not furnish any proof in respect of public allegations made by him at the AGM. "After considering the reply given by you, the Managing Committee came to the conclusion that you did not have any specific proof in respect of the allegations of the black marketing of Ahmedabad T20 match tickets by the office bearers of MCA and that the said allegations were baseless, unsubstantiated and false." Stating that Shetty had been given a chance to hear the audio recording of his statement at the AGM and there was no change in his stand, the two joint secretaries have spelt out that they have been authorised by Savant to inform him of the decision to debar him till June 2, 2018 from participating in any matters pertaining to the activities of the association. Shetty would not be "permitted to represent any member club of the association, any tournament committee, any sponsor, franchisee, contractor or any person who has any relationship with the Mumbai Cricket Association, contractual or otherwise, during the said period of five years," the letter added.
Last-gasp Honda goal fires Japan into World Cup
SAITAMA, JAPAN: Keisuke Honda fired Japan into the 2014 World Cup with a dramatic injury-time penalty which salvaged a 1-1 draw with Australia and made them the first team to qualify alongside hosts Brazil. Tommy Oar's fortuitous late strike had looked set to condemn the hosts to an undeserved defeat. But after Matthew McKay handled in the box, Honda drove his spotkick straight down the middle to earn the necessary point. The result left the Asian champions seven points clear and uncatchable in Group B, putting them through to their fifth straight World Cup. It is the first time they have sealed qualification on home soil. "I was nervous. I tried to hit the shot to the centre," said Honda. "If it was saved, there was nothing I could do about it."

Ashraful suspended by BCB for match-fixing allegations
D
HAKA: Former Bangladesh captain Mohammad Ashraful was suspended from all forms of cricket after he confessed his involvement in fixing matches, adding another sordid chapter to the spot-fixing saga which has already engulfed Indian cricket. More than a fortnight after the spot-fixing scandal broke out in the Indian Premier League, Ashraful's suspension is the latest case of corruption in cricket which has seen a number of cricketers being arrested in recent times. "As Ashraful has confessed his involvement in fixing to the ACSU team, so he should not be allowed to play any level of cricket until we get a full report of the investigation," Bangladesh Cricket Board president Nazmul Hassan told reporters. "I have spoken with Ashraful, he told me that he has confessed
everything to the ASCU," Hassan said, adding that the batsman had not disclosed details of his confession to him. The International Cricket Council's Anti-Corruption and Security Unit (ACSU) has been probing allegations of match-fixing during the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), a Twenty20 competition. Hassan's announcement came during a meeting of the BCB here to deal with the match-fixing allegations. The alleged fixing involves a match between the Dhaka Gladiators and the Chittagong Kings the Barisal Burners, which his teams during the second edition of team lost by seven wickets, the reports said. the BPL. Skipper Dhoni comes under attack from former cricketers N
EW DELHI: Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has come under sharp attack from some former cricketers for his alleged conflict of interest for having stakes in the sports management company which handles him and three of his Indian teammates. Dhoni found himself in a controversy when it came to light that he had 15 per cent stake in Rhiti Sports, which also manages Suresh Raina, Ravindra Jadeja and Pragyan Ojha, besides the Indian captain. However, the firm has made it clear that Dhoni was a shareholder only for a brief period, and currently has no stakes. But former Indian cricketers and sports management executives feel that Dhoni should not put himself in such a position where questions could be raised about a possible conflict of interest. "Obviously, the documents that have come out indicates that it has been a conflict of interest as far as Dhoni's involvement with Rhiti Sports is concerned," former Indian cricketer Kirti Azad told PTI. "I don't mind if an ex-cricketer is acting as an agent for a living. But when I see Pragyan Ojha being relegated to second choice leftarm spinner suddenly and Ravindra Jadeja being valued at USD 2 million after being banned for trying to cut underhand deals in IPL, I guess something is wrong. Also if the company didn't have sufficient money, how did they issue shares and paid it back," Azad pointed out. Latika Khaneja of Collage Sports management said there was an
obvious conflict of interest and also raised questions about Rs 210 crore deal that was struck between the captain and the company. "Obviously there is conflict of interest. The first question that crops up is Rs 210 crore minimum guarantee money which is huge. Ravindra Jadeja was managed
by my company from 2006-2011. But if a player comes and wants to join another firm, you can't stop him and especially if the firm is also managing the Indian captain," Khaneja said. Another former cricketer Maninder Singh also felt if the captain indeed had shares it was a clear case of conflict of interest. "But who do you expect to stop the rot when the BCCI President has gone against everyone who has stood up for the game...Basically the President has been saving the captain who is also vice-president in his company," he said. Former India opener and currently DDCA Vice-President Chetan Chauhan said ethically it was not correct for Dhoni to have stakes in the company which manages him. "Ethically this is not correct. It seems to be trickling down from the President. The Board officials need to take some harsh decisions and make it clear what business the players and officials can float of their own," he said. Another former Indian player Madan Lal said that it was not proper for Dhoni to have stakes in the company but did not think he could manipulate team selection. "There is no question that if it is true, there is a conflict of interest," he said. VVS Laxman, Dhoni's teammate till recently, felt that the Indian skipper should sell off his shares, if he had any, as it could drive him into a compromising situation. When such a problem arises, stakeholder should come out of the company by selling his shares off. I think that can solve all the problems at one go," he said.
during his Test career which spanned from 2001 to 2013. In ODIs, Ashraful managed 3468 runs in 177 matches for an average of 22.23. The allegations are the latest to hit Bangladeshi cricket, including the BPL, which was launched in 2012 on the lines of the cash-rich Indian Premier League.
FORGIVE ME FOR MY WRONGDOINGS: ASHRAFUL Bangladesh cricketer Mohammad Ashraful "apologised" to his nation after admitting his involvement in fixing matches, adding another sordid chapter to the spot-fixing saga which has already engulfed Indian cricket. "Forgive me," Ashraful told reporters at his residence as he confessed his involvement in match and spot fixing in the Bangladesh Premier League. "I would only plead that you all forgive me for my wrongdoings against the nation and myself," Ashraful, Bangladesh's most talked-about batsman, added.
Jaitley ’not fully satisfied', says Manohar was his first choice
NEW DELHI: BCCI Vice President Arun Jaitley is not "fully satisfied" with how the Working Committee meeting panned out in Chennai, saying he would have preferred Shashank Manohar in place of Jagmohan Dalmiya as head of the four-member "interim arrangement". Bowing to all-round pressure, N Srinivasan had on Sunday agreed to "step aside" as BCCI President under a compromise formula that brought back former Chief Dalmiya as head of a fourmember "interim arrangement" to run the Board, more than a fortnight after the spot-fixing scandal rocked Indian cricket. "I won't say that I am fully satisfied. The game of cricket is synonymous with fairness and when you have three players being arrested because they are involved in unfair practice which graduates into fixing or a relative of the senior board official is allegedly involved in betting, it casts very serious doubts and calls for a very strong action," said Jaitley.

ON SONG TSONGA OUSTS OUT OF TUNE FEDERER
P
ARIS: Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has taken a step closer to fulfilling French hopes at Roland Garros on Tuesday after his 7-5, 6-3, 6-3 win over 2009 champion Roger Federer in their quarter-final clash. Sixth seed Tsonga is the lone French prospect remaining at Roland Garros. He is bidding to become the first male champion at the Paris Grand Slam since Yannick Noah in 1983. Tsonga was denied an early break point chance in Federer’s first service game and was made to rue his missed opportunity as a loose service game proved costly when Federer broke for a 32 lead. Federer’s form was inconsistent though. Hampered by untimely unforced errors, particularly on the forehand side, the Swiss surrendered a 40/15 advantage in the eighth game and Tsonga took full advantage, playing with greater confidence from the baseline to level at 4-4. With the Philippe Chatrier crowd
cheering him on, Tsonga created a 40/0 lead on Federer’s serve in the 12th game. The Swiss fought back to level at deuce, but gave Tsonga a fourth opportunity, which he took as Federer framed a mid-rally forehand into the stands. Tsonga did not take his foot off the gas. Looking to reach his first major semi-final since 2012 Wimbledon (l. to Murray), he broke Federer to love for a 2-0 lead in the second set as the Swiss sprayed a backhand wide. Federer avoided going down a double break in the sixth game, but was powerless as Tsonga served out the second set in 35 minutes with an unreturned serve. SERENA STRETCHES IN TO SEMIS World number one Serena Williams survived a huge scare to reach her first French Open semifinal since 2003 on Tuesday, defeating unseeded Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.

Williams, bidding to win just her second title in Paris, 11 years after her first, looked down and almost out at one stage against the 2009 champion. Despite coasting through the first set, she then dropped serve for the first time in the tournament, being broken three times in the second set, trailed 0-2 in the third and fought off two break points that would have seen her slip to 0-3. But she battled back, winning six of the next seven games to secure victory in a shade under two hours. Victory extended Williams' winning streak to 29 matches as she moved into a semi-final clash against Italian fifth seed Sara Errani, the runner-up to Maria Sharapova last year. "It was very difficult and I am very tired," said Williams. "Svetlana played very well. She has won this tournament before so I am happy to get through such a tough match. Against Sara, it will be another toughgreat fighter."
France's Jo-Wilfried Tsonga reacts after a point against Switzerland's Roger Federer during the French Open quarter final match at the Roland Garros stadium in Paris. He defeated Federer in straight sets. FERRER IN LAST FOUR David Ferrer has reached the semi-finals for the second straight year.Fourth seed Ferrer cruised past fellow Spaniard and No. 32 seed Tommy Robredo 6-2, 6-1, 6-1 and will next meet sixth seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. Ferrer kept the points short and reaped dividends in the first set of their ninth meeting. He maintained his energy and focus to break Robredo twice, including the eighth game to love, to capture the 33-minute opener. Ferrer won 83 per cent of his first service points and hit six winners. Ferrer produced a businesslike performance in the second set, forcing Robredo out wide in baseline rallies and executing his plan on serve. Robredo, who was sidelined for five months due to a leg injury in 2012, tried to force his way back into the match, but Ferrer showcased tremendous consistency. Ferrer sealed the set in 30 minutes, having lost just six service points and hit 10 winners.
C ARDIFF: Umesh Yadav wreaked havoc with a five-wicket haul after Dinesh Karthik hit a sublime unbeaten hundred as India demolished Australia by 243 runs in their final Champions Trophy warm-up match. Yadav took five for 18 as Australia collapsed to 34 for six wickets by the end of the 12th over and were eventually bowled out for a paltry 65 in 23.3 overs. Except Hughes and Adam Voges (23 off 49 balls), none of the top seven batsmen got into double digits.
