To my beloved Queen, thank you for a wonderful 33 years.
Obituary Ruby Renia Harris “Rookie” As it is written, Behold I am laying in Zion a Stone that will make men stumble, a Rock that will make them fall; but he who believes in Him [who adheres to, trusts in, and relies on Him] shall not be put to shame nor be disappointed in his expectations. Romans 9:33 AMP Bible
Born March1, 1955 to Charles Paul ‘C. P.’ Johnson and Ruby Mae Thomas Johnson of Bastrop. Renia was a former member of Paul Quinn AME Church and was currently the co-pastor of S.T.O.R.M. Ministries. Renia loved to help her father who was a rancher. She was more of the cowgirl type than the domestic type. Renia enjoyed being around animals. As she grew, she would assist her father in training their horses. As a teenager Renia excelled in basketball at BHS, therefore acquiring the name “Rookie”. She graduated from Bastrop High School in 1973 and continued her education at A&C College of Beauty, Austin Texas. In 1978 Renia met the man of her dreams. The courtship didn’t last very long because Carlton proposed to Renia six months later and they were united on July 7, 1979 in Holy Matrimony. From their union Ishmael and Shamael were born. Immediately after their union, Renia became a successful, wellestablished business owner, entrepreneur. Renia was even a Soft Sheen Platform stylist from 1978-1981. She owned HCS Salon and Spa in Austin and was the first minority businesses owner to open in the new Mueller Town Center. Renia was the featured stylist in the Austin American-Statesman, in the Lifestyle section June 6, 1990. Most recently she was recognized on three local news stations for her achievements. Along with her many accomplishments, Renia was ordained to the ministry in 1993. She volunteered, as a sponsor, with the Dell Children’s Hospital Christmas Tree give away and free hair service to those children in need. She participated in the African-American Hair-A-Thon event at HCS Salon with D'Andres, DFPS, and Parenting Across Color (Amy Ford). She came together to join in with foster and adoptive parents by providing information on hair care, simple styling, and proper maintenance for those in attendance. This was an opportunity for the community to take advantage of free services and professional advice for those in need. Renia was a frequent visitor and participant of the annual Bronner Brothers Hair Show. Renia’s life was about helping others in whatever way she could. She used her salon as a platform to share the word of God. She was open hearted and loved unconditionally. Renia touched many people’s lives. Everything Mom How did you find the energy, Ma To do all the things you did, To be a teacher, nurse and counselor To me, when I was a kid. How did you do it all, Ma Be a chauffeur, cook and friend, Yet find time to be a playmate, I just can’t comprehend. I see now it was love, Ma That made you come whenever I’d call Your inexhaustible love, Ma And I thank you for it all.
