Dear Parishioners, As we roll over into the New Year, there are still six days of Christmas left as officially Christmas ends on January 6th with the feast of Epiphany. So I hope there is still room in your heart to extend good wishes to those you haven’t yet seen and to celebrate together the gift of light and love given by God as he reached down from heaven to give us his Son. Thank you to all those who helped make Christmas so special this year….to the team who put together the “Festival of Christmas” at the end of November for your inspiration and hard work thank you – to Ann Roberts, Pam Bufton, Heather

Pickering, Sally Wall and Jos Whitbread. What wonderful decoration of the church and delights of gifts and entertainment for us and warming soup and mulled wine to give us sustenance at this cold time of year. Thank you to Mr Frank Rowland for bringing down the fairground organ and to Mrs Daniel for bringing the school children to play and to Philippa Alexander for singing Christmas carols and songs. Thank you, too, to the local organisations and businesses who sponsored the event or gave a raffle prize. Everyone who came said they thoroughly enjoyed themselves and £2000 was raised with almost £800

going off to British Heart Foundation from this grand amount. It was lovely to see many of you at the Christmas services and a big thank you goes to Vicky and her family at the Bell House for the gift of the crib set given in memory of her father who was a vicar. It was blessed on Christmas Eve at the Crib Service and we are blessed by its presence in church. Thank you to David and the choir for their dedication and music which inspires our worship week in and week out, but especially when the Christmas Carols get into full flow and the descants are added. I hope you enjoyed singing your favourite carols as we gave thanks for the birth of Jesus. So now it remains to wish you a very Happy New Year – may 2015 be full of abundant life and I look forward to sharing it with you. Julie

Kingsland W I We enjoyed our December meeting when Rosemary Evans demonstrated making canapĂŠs and nibbles for Christmas. She showed us how to make farmhouse pate, bacon and leek tartlets and cheese and bacon savouries. All agreed they tasted very good indeed. More food the next evening as we went to the Kings House at Pembridge for our Christmas dinner. Once again a jolly evening with very good food! Nature Notes 15/12/14 Three unusual incidents during the last month! A Bees Nest in a local cottage chimney was seen to be very active on November 25th – a warm sunny day. Two swans were witnessed colliding in mid-air whilst flying in opposite directions some 30 feet above an open field. These came to ground and then proceeded to fight. Was this the Swan equivalent of road rage? Number 3 was the discovery of a Grey Squirrel present in an upstairs bedroom, having gained entrance to the house somehow. A concerted effort bolted the animal to the master bedroom, where the door was shut, the window opened, and the squirrel duly vanished. On moving a chest the animal shot out of the bottom drawer and under the double bed (with a three inch clearance!) A tail observed near the centre of the bed, a ceremonial sword thrust at the target, a mis-moved bed, and the rodent decided to dash to the window, dive onto the lawn and run up its own tree. Amazing creatures, whose powers of survival amaze many of us! Odd slight frost, leaves virtually all down, flush of water in the river, grass still growing, shortest day fast approaching – it will soon be 2015! R.W.H. (01544 388210)

Carols on the Green ‘Thank you’, everyone who came out to sing carols last Friday (Dec. 12th ). We have sung in worse weather but despite the evening being dry our numbers were down! However a hearty twenty or so of us sang, with Rev Read giving us the key. We ate a bountiful number of mince pies and drank all the mulled wine. ‘Thank you’, too, to everyone who provided these treats. We do miss the brass band that first inspired us to hold this event and if anyone has any ideas for musical accompaniment next year please do get in touch. Likewise if a different time and day of the week would be more acceptable we are willing to change. Despite all this and the poor quality, low cost, and therefore low heat, charcoal that I had found, we did sing happily and John and Joe collected £31.08 for St Michael's Hospice Jackie Markham (Tel: 708281)

St Michael’s Hospice ‘Big Tea’ Help us make a big difference by hosting a small fundraising tea party this summer! At St Michael’s Hospice, ‘The Big Tea’ is all about sharing time with friends over a cup of tea and a slice of cake. Kingsland Flower Show This is a reminder that the Annual General Meeting of the Kingsland Flower Show will be held at the Village Post Office room at 7.00pm on Tuesday 27 January 2015. Royal British Legion Branch Meetings. The Quiz and Christmas Draw on the 1st December was well supported and the excellent number of draw prizes raised £101 for our funds. We now take a winter break and our next meeting will be on 2nd March at the usual time and place. Widow and Widowers Lunch. The Christmas lunch at the Corners Inn on 10th December was a great success. Although some of our regular guests and members were absent because of illness, a total of 37 enjoyed a very good meal and the draw for the three hampers raised £135. We wish to thank Sue, Richard and all at the Corners Inn for the meal and Anne Roberts and Heather Pickering for all the organisation and preparing the three hampers. Poppy Appeal. The 2014 Poppy Appeal in the Kingsland area raised £4426.30, a slight increase on last year, but still a very fine effort by Jan Nichols and her small team of collectors. Weobley & District Local History Society At the November meeting David Whitehead gave a talk entitled “Herefordshire in the Early Middle Ages”. David has an encyclopaedic knowledge of the period and it is impossible to paraphrase his talk that lasted over an hour and covered a range of subject matter; but there is no doubt that anyone who absorbed even one percent of the information David presented would be a great deal wiser than they were before. Did you realise that Hereford was a very important city to William the Conqueror and was the 9th largest city in England; the equivalent of Leeds today? His enthusiasm for history, particularly medieval history, was infectious. The next meeting will be on January 28th when Pat Millington will tell us about William Call, who was the illegitimate son of a Cornish Baronet and a French seamstress. Born in Paris in 1879, he came to school in England in his teens and studied at the Royal Academy of Music. He took up photography and, up unto the mid 1930’s, produced literally thousands of postcard views of Southern and Midland England. Pat first became aware of William Call from the excellent postcards he produced of Weobley and found researching his life fascinating and surprising. Dog Poo Alert! Over the last month or so someone walking their dog (or dogs) through the village is letting them poo all over the pavement. The main area this is happening is from the Corners Inn to the Church, including the school. Children are walking through this mess, all for the sake of someone not bothering to clean up after their dog(s). This happens early as the mess is normally there before 7am. This is when other, responsible, dog walkers have seen it. Could everyone please pick up their dog mess from the pavement. It is unhygienic and some other poor soul has to pick it up for you which is not nice. Thank you, Lisa Juson

Luctonians Sports Club The 1st XV’s losing run continues despite serious training, discussion on tactics, game plans, and much effort by all concerned. A positive spirit is there. The 2nd XV currently the high spot – good Rugby played at pace, resulting in some impressive results. Junior sides all functioning, and are well-coached and organised. The social side is in full seasonal swing with total bookings of pre 1st XV home-match lunches. The match-day café near the side of the 1st team pitch is gaining popularity. Manned by volunteers, it is an interesting example of supply and demand! The treasurer/director of finance is a busy person. All is not doom and gloom. Cricket-coaching courses available. R.W.H.
