Kingsland News May 2014 There are some wonderful things coming up and I hope that you will join with me in sharing them. Vivaldi's Gloria is being sung by Hereford Cathedral School Chamber Choir and Lucton School Choir on Friday May 2nd. We are hoping to fill the church.... in fact they are not coming unless we guarantee 200 tickets sold, so please come and enjoy this wonderful gift that is coming to Kingsland. Invite your friends, cook them supper and make an evening of it!

Thanks for all those who have helped contribute in various ways over the last months - £460 for church funds from those who came to Coffee at the Rectory in March, £80 to help the Young Farmers take fodder down to the Somerset Level Farmers during the floods, and £70 for the ‘I am Malala’ Fund towards making sure girls across the world benefit from education, which was raised from the sale of Mothering Sunday gifts at the Primary School.

Rogation Sunday this year falls on the last weekend in May and we are invited to Street Farm (courtesy of Harvey and Rachael Pudge) to enjoy an outdoor service as we join together from all the parishes to pray for our farmers and all those who tend the land in our parishes.

Always a special service!

Jean Barbour and Dave Davies have been re elected as churchwardens for the coming year and my thanks go to them and to all the PCC for their dedicated hard work and immensely caring attitude both to myself as I have joined you full time, and also to the community at large. The annual report was extremely positive and we are looking forward to the coming year.

Kingsland W I The Jumble Sale went very well with a good crowd and fine weather. At our April meeting we arranged an outing to Burton Court in June and the Birthday Dinner at the Riverside in May. Our speaker was Shirley Cook from Bromyard W I, on Thai cookery. She brought with her an electric wok, a rice cooker and the ingredients for a Thai green curry including ginger and spices, kaffir lime leaves, coconut milk and coconut cream, chillies, red peppers, bamboo shoots , chicken and a splash of fish sauce. She demonstrated the curry making and while it cooked showed us how to make rice paper rolls. We all sampled the delicious food at the end of the evening.

Our next meeting will be on May 14th with Mr Andrew Offer on Marketing Lamb. All are welcome to attend.

We are already going to see Riverdance on October 5th and I have now booked for the classic play, The Mousetrap, which is on its 60th anniversary tour! I have never seen it and am really excited about finding out who dunnit! th

Your local Pétanque team needs you!

Pétanque, or boules as the French call it, is played at pubs and leisure centres throughout Herefordshire. It is fun and easy to pick up, a bit like bowls, except the boules (balls) have no bias. There is a team based at The Angel Inn in Kingsland which welcomes new players, even if you are a complete beginner and would like to learn how to play. One of our team has been playing less than a year.

For those of you who do not know the game, pétanque is played between 2 teams on a gravel playing surface with steel balls (boules) roughly the size of a cricket ball. The aim of the game is to get more of your boules closer to a small wooded 'jack' or 'cosh' than your opponents.

Matches are played between teams of a minimum of 6 (4 in winter) and comprise two singles games, two doubles and two trebles.

Not surprisingly, a match is won by winning the most games.

Our team plays in a league against other teams that are based throughout Herefordshire – which means that in any season, we get to visit some really nice pubs we might not otherwise try out. In the summer, matches are on Wednesday evenings, in the winter on Sunday mornings.

Our team were third in our group in the winter league and are now looking forward to summer. The first match is on 16th April. We currently have 8 regular players, which is just about enough provided not too many people are doing other things at the same time – but we would love to welcome some new members. The team has a policy

that if you turn up for a match, you get a game, so no-one is left just watching.

Most of us live in Aymestrey, but that's just the way it is at present – there is no residence requirement!

Gift Aid Report April 2014.

I would like to thank everyone who has given so generously to the church during the last year. The tax reclaimed from HMRC has risen considerably. There has been a concerted effort by everyone to gift aid donations wherever possible.

I am very grateful to everyone who has gift aided their donations and this has included numerous visitors to the church for our various fund raising events. Consequently it is a considerable number of thank you letters (over 200) that will potentially be generated on my small computer, together with the cost of paper, envelopes and ink cartridges.

Therefore I will not be sending individual letters as in previous years. I would like to thank all donors again for their generosity.

If anyone would like a statement for tax purposes at the end of the Tax year summarising their donations and tax reclaimed please let me know and I am happy to print one for them.

What Is the Kingsland Neighbourhood Plan?

The Kingsland Neighbourhood Plan (KNP) is a community-led document which will be about the future use and development of land within our parish over the next 20 years.

Our Neighbourhood Plan will define the future look and shape of the parish and will become part of the statutory development plan for Herefordshire. The proposals we set out in our Neighbourhood Plan will be enforced by planning officers when deciding on applications for planning permission.

Why is it important?

Current planning policy is provided at a local level by the Herefordshire Unitary Development Plan, soon to be replaced by the Core Strategy. While this process is taking place and once the Core Strategy is adopted, the parish is open to ad hoc development unless we have a Neighbourhood Plan in place. Our Neighbourhood Plan will have policies which will guide development to the places we as a parish consider it should go.

Who we are & when we meet The KNP is being produced by volunteers from the parish, this involves members of the Parish Council and other residents of the parish. Presently, the group is made up of 13 villagers, but we need more!!

We meet at The Corners Inn every month. Our calendar of meetings can be viewed in the Kingsland News, on the KingslandLife website, and notices will be placed on the village notice boards. Regular updates will also be posted on the Neighbourhood Plan pages on www.kingslandlife.com.

Why We Need You! We have a very important job on our hands and it is imperative that we have a robust Neighbourhood Plan in place as soon as possible. Without a Neighbourhood Plan, we will be open to development in places we may consider inappropriate, such as outside the current village settlement boundary. As a member of this community, your input in this process is critical and your assistance with the project is desperately needed. We need help to do everything from arranging community events to leaflet dropping.

Luctonians Sports Club The final paragraph of the Old Luctonians RFC Year Book written in 1949 at the end of the first season reads, “To turn more readily to next season, with an ever increasing number of keen players, new fixtures, and a sound balance at the bank, the prospects, providing Dame Fortune smiles kindly upon us, are rosy indeed.” Well, here we are in 2014, and the sequence of events is quite staggering. Most readers will be aware of these. Pre-match lunches have been a sell-out for the 20 tables of 10 available, including the weekend of April 12th/13th. Perhaps one of the best 1st XV matches staged versus Darlington Mowden Park – a National League 2 North fixture. The 40th 200club draw followed. All 200 tickets were sold and ten prize-winners chosen - £3k for them and £3k for club funds.

Next day a staggering attendance at the now annual Anglo-Welsh Mini Festival with more than 1000 youngsters taking part, and bringing countless cars and camp followers, as well as a record cash take for the day of £12,800! Next day saw a group of volunteers clearing up and returning things to normal, led by the President, and yes, Dame Fortune did smile; the sun shone!

Cricket, Croquet, Rounders, Running and Cycling follow. The next President and Chairman are lined up, and an excellent committee is standing.

Luctonians is now a big animal!

Films at Aymestrey Films are shown at Aymestrey Parish Hall on the first Sunday of every month.

The film on 4th May is “American Hustle”, a comedy about an attempted heist. Doors open at 6.45pm, the film starts at 7.00pm and entry is £5 a person. Home-made ice-cream and popcorn are on sale before the screening, and you are welcome to bring other refreshments if you wish.

Most of the seating is “cabaret-style”, around small tables.

Grand National Sweep Stake Results Thank you everybody who bought tickets for our sweepstake which raises the money needed to buy the Easter Rabbit’s chocolate eggs. Nature Notes 15/4/14

Inspired by the arrival of a lone Swallow at 12 noon on April 12th I write a few words to share some observations with you. It ‘wittered’ a couple of times, flew into and out of the Mill, and went. Was it an advanced scout? I had a report of a Cuckoo on Weobley Marsh on April 4th What a lovely time of the year – amazing show of Primroses, Blackthorn out, (always cold when this happens) masses of Pear and Plum Blossom.

Magnolia trees are a show for a couple of days, then the petals are dropping for ages. Blue Tits inspecting new nest boxes, and there are a pair of Dippers by the weir. A cock Pheasant with two ladies is the proud owner of territory around the Cattle Shed, having seen off two rivals. Three Wrens are sorting out who’s who. I was sad to hear of a dead Goldcrest found under a patio window locally. The Rookery is now up to nearly twenty nests, and Jackdaws continue to carry twigs to chimney nest site.

They must be the untidiest builders and Long-tailed Tits the tidiest.

KCS 2014 Spring Concert This is on Saturday 17th May, 2014, 7.30 pm at St Mary's, Kington, and features three gorgeous choral works by Dvorak "Mass in D", Brahms "Song of Destiny" and Vaughan Williams "Toward the Unknown Region".

The 60-strong KCS choir will be fronted by young professional soloists from one of our local area music conservatoires, and accompanied by Hilary Norris on organ and piano, under the baton of MD Roger Langford.

Royal British Legion Branch Meetings. The meeting on 7th April was, once again, rather thin on the ground but, thanks to a generous supply of prizes and a good quiz by Mr and Mrs Davis, still raised ÂŁ67. Our next meeting will be on 5th May, although this is a Bank Holiday, not the 12th as currently advertised.

National Conference. The RBL National Conference takes place next month. The proposed agenda is on display on our notice board - it looks like being an interesting meeting especially if some of the more contentious subjects are allowed to be fully debated.

County Meetings. The quarterly County Meeting is due at the end of May. I hope to be able to find out full details for the WW1 commemoration events.
