Kingsland News March 2015 Dear Parishioners, Great Uncle Bulgaria – oh no – Great Uncle Lindsay taught me how to play the piano. I remember the lessons very well, he had a wooden leg as one of his own was cut off by a tram in an accident when he was a child. He played the organ which we found amusing, and wondered how he did that with one leg. Anyway he taught me a thing or two – I was always rather haphazard with my practice and when I got into the lesson and the piece went off ok I was relieved until Great Uncle Lindsay would say – the proof of whether you know something well is whether you can play it twice in succession correctly, and the scale or piece or whatever it was would invariably go wrong the second time and I knew I had been found out. It’s a pretty good test really. Lent is that test. It is a time to look and see whether we juggle our spiritual life and get by, or whether we go deep with God and have given the best we are to him. Jesus

said the first commandment is this: You shall Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your mind. I think I am found out by this. Perhaps it is time to have another go at it? We deceive ourselves if we think it doesn’t matter. Life is not a rehearsal! What can we offer to help – well for those who want to study the Bible and hear God’s word through it – there is ‘John’s Gospel Explored’ on Wednesday nights at the Rectory – 7.30 – 9pm. My wonderful husband is there to uncover some of the treasures in that book, or on Friday afternoons between 2 - 3pm there are a number of events either in Kingsland Church or the Methodist Church that are thought provoking and prayerful. And on Sundays we meet together in church. I think those who say I don’t need Church are like those who are educated at home instead of going to school – you can find out much by yourself,

and you can pray to God by yourself, but the banter and challenge that you get from others is worth more than you can know. Perhaps someone stopped you coming to church, or some event in your lives – surely that person has long since disappeared, and hopefully that event has healed or needs healing before your life disappears in a flash. If you are not able to come to church, the church can come to you. One of the most precious parts of my ministry is when I take communion to those who are at home, or when I visit those who are no longer able to sit in church for any length. Please ask me if you would like that and I will do my best. I’m going to look again this Lent at my faith and I hope you will have a look at yours. Remember Great Uncle Lindsay’s test! Julie

Kingsland W I Our speaker in February, Miss Alice Oxenham, told us about her life in the art world. She is of the 7th generation of her family involved in art and grew up living above her father's gallery in Bromyard. As an artist he went to great lengths to obtain views of the natural world, even to the extent of sleeping outdoors in order to see the sunrise. As children, Alice and her brother often accompanied him and found themselves sleeping rough under hedgerows. Her grandfather was also an artist and her grandmother made ceramic jewellery. Both her father and grandfather designed stamps. Those for the Royal Mail featured horses and wildlife; for Bahrain the design was of birds of prey and for Guernsey the flora of the island. The gallery in Bromyard was full of stuffed birds and had a coracle hanging from the ceiling. Her father made the coracle in order to reach places he wished to paint. Not having any canvas to hand to cover the framework he took a sheet off the bed to finish the job, much to his wife's distress. He had a barn filled with veteran cars and motorbikes. Miss Oxenham longed for a more 'normal' life and so became a primary school teacher for ten years. Eventually the art world drew her back and she now runs a small gallery in Leominster High Street and also teaches art for two days a week at Hereford Art College. She sells her father's work and that of other artists. We were shown many examples of her family's work, especially of the limited edition prints of landscapes and animals, some of which we recognised as having been used for greeting cards. We enjoyed the evening very much, seeing the first day

covers of the stamps, the landscapes and the (often humorous) pictures of domestic animals. Our next meeting is on the 11th March and Pam Bufton will demonstrate flowers for Easter. All are welcome to attend. The Jumble Sale will be on Sat 28th March. Pat Hughes

April 25th Battle of Mortimer’s Cross Walk and History Day

Amazing history on our doorstep This famous ‘Wars of the Roses’ battle changed the face of English History and helped put a local man (Edward IV) on the throne of England. The Battlefield trust is organising a day to tell the story of the Battle of Mortimer’s Cross, primarily, but not exclusively for local people. There will be two halves to the day and you are welcome to book for all day or for half a day. Places will be limited so book early to avoid disappointment. There will be a morning and an afternoon guided walk, both different, led by experts on the battle. Lunch at the Corners Inn is optional. A talk with armour and weapons in the afternoon or a short guided walk around the medieval parts of Kingsland Village related to the battle.  The walks are suitable for anyone able to undertake a 3 mile cross country walk at a gentle pace. Children and well controlled dogs welcome.  The day will begin at 10 am, lunch is at 12.45 and the afternoon begins at 14.00 with the talk and display or tour of Kingsland sites until 15.15, followed by the afternoon walk which finishes at 17.45.

The organisers reserve the right to amend the programme if necessary Costs will be kept to a minimum, optional lunch choices £5-£10 to pay on the day and a voluntary donation for the Battlefield Trust, £10 per adult, to include tea and coffee at the beginning and end of the day. Royal British Legion Next Meeting After the winter break, our next meeting will be a Quiz and Draw social evening on 2nd March at the Corners Inn. Forthcoming Events The Prime Minister has unveiled plans to commemorate the 70th anniversary of VE Day 1945 over the weekend 8th to 10th May. I will keep everyone informed of details of County events nearer the time. Plans are also underway to mark the final end of hostilities in August 1945. Again watch this space. Welfare. Churchyard Team We cannot get too far into 2015 without extending a huge thank you to Richard Hall and his wonderful team of helpers who have done such an excellent job in tidying many areas of the churchyard. This had been long overdue. They have removed huge amounts of ivy from tombs and exposed beautiful memorials to families’ loved ones. They have felled huge shrubs that had become totally out of control, they have removed overhanging branches from the large yew tree at the back of the church, made numerous headstones more safe and started a mammoth task of removing weeds and debris from some of the very old graves that have stone surrounds. There are in fact over 100 of these throughout the churchyard which need resurrecting. A huge task! With this in mind, it has been suggested that we might try and re-instigate the working parties that used to take place, three or four times a year on Saturday mornings. Apparently 20+ people used to turn up armed with tools and even wheelbarrows! It would be wonderful if we could make this a project for 2015 and try to get our churchyard looking much more ‘cared for’, in some of the areas where it is difficult to mow or strim. It has also been suggested that as a result of such get-togethers, it may be possible to get individuals to ‘adopt’ one or two graves and take on the responsibility of maintaining them. Visitors enjoyed the delights of 32 unique gardens, including private gardens not normally open to the public such as the Newport House estate. Stoke Prior and Wellington Heath also held village-wide Open Garden events. In total, an astonishing £24,000 was raised by our green-fingered supporters. Opening your garden for St Michael’s Hospice can be a very rewarding experience, for you and the people who visit. Kingsland Neighbourhood Development Plan Submission Date The Kingsland Neighbourhood Development Plan will be submitted to Herefordshire Council on May 8th for the six week Regulation 16 consultation and then on to examination. Following examination we will keep you informed of the result and next steps

Nature Notes (17/2/15) The year progresses and I’ve heard the first tentative notes of the Song Thrush, my favourite bird song. The unusual event of the month is the report of bees very active in early February, and working on the beds of Snowdrops. Their nest is under the roof tiles of the house which faces the sun – an indication of the mild spell – too much, too soon. February fill-dyke not performing yet! Rooks re-convening in pairs, dead Salmon in the mill tail, moles everywhere; cock Sparrow, with chest out, chirping from perch near a chosen nest site! I have a report of several Robins fighting over territory – very aggressive little birds! Some lovely Spring Flowers beginning to show. We should study them more closely. R.W.H. Weobley Music Concert - Saturday 9th May 2015 First, 20 minutes of Weobley’s own band, reborn as Alive And Pickin and now bluesy, country and jazzy. Then 50 minutes of The Remi Harris Quartet. Weobley Music wouldn’t be the same without Remi, this year with a percussionist for, as Remi says, ‘just a few numbers’. Finally, an hour of 3 Belgians and an ‘Irish immigrant’ who make up The Sons Of Navarone. They were voted Best European Bluegrass Band in 2012, so this is probably the best bluegrass outside the USA. 7.30 pm to 10.15 pm (doors open at 7 pm) at Weobley Village Hall, HR4 8SN. Hospice Soup & Pancake Lunch. This event at the Luctonian’s Rugby Club raised the pleasing sum of £742.24 for St Michael’s Hospice as well as being an enjoyable social event. Sunday Lunch in Church. This month’s Sunday lunch in Church will take place on March 22nd at about 12.15pm. £10 will buy a two-course lunch and a first glass of wine or soft drink free. Proceeds in aid of Kingsland Church. Marmalade for Sale There will be a marmalade sale and a ‘Paddington Raffle’ at Kingsland Church on Tuesday 24th March, between 12 noon and 1 o’clock. Receipts will be sent to help alleviate the ‘Ebola’ crisis in Africa.

Locals win gold. Local running club, Croft Ambrey, came away with a haul of medals from the county cross-country league again this season. In the team event the men won gold and the women silver, losing out on gold by only one point. Club members won several medals in ten of the different age-group categories from ‘Senior’ to ‘65+’. Jo Marriott, Nicky Turvey (Yarpole) and Liz Bowers (Luston) won gold in their age categories in the women’s competition. Club Winter Social The Club’s annual dinner was on 27th February at Luctonians. The meal, prize giving and quiz is a fun event for members and their families- an opportunity to socialise without being out of breath or covered in mud! In fact, we all scrub up really well! Shobdon Wood Race 19 April 2015 11am Free T-shirt , refreshments, prizes (individual and teams) This race has plenty of hills, fantastic views, a friendly atmosphere and – depending on the season- is sometimes run through carpets of bluebells. Trauma Teddies? As you know, I have been collecting and sending teddy bears to abused children in South Africa for the past two years. Last week a small team of us packed and sent over 500 which will be distributed by Rotary International to suffering children in the townships. The teddies are bringing the most enormous comfort to children who have suffered horribly. I have many messages from the people involved and am so very grateful to local people here and their children who have so willingly donated their much loved teddies. Now, through the Syrian Relief and Development organisation I have the opportunity of sending teddies to thousands of children in Syria. We all know of the trauma and hardship that children in some Middle East countries are suffering and I know that these teddies will bring them comfort and perhaps some healing. So my aim now is to set up a charity in order to be able to fund and send teddies to Syrian children. I hope to send some 10,000 teddies by the end of July! That is quite a project so I am going to need help. On Thursday the 5th March I am holding a public meeting in the Kingsland village hall at 8pm to ask local people to help me take on the task of setting up the project and running the charity. A suggested name for the charity is Trauma Teddies. However that can be discussed!! If you feel that you can spare some time and commitment to this project then do please come along to the meeting. Luctonians Sports Club Much activity continues! The 1st XV flagship is under much scrutiny with its position in the league near the bottom. Team spirit remains good and a positive outlook prevails. The 2nd XV find it difficult to be fully extended by current opposition. The numerous other age groups all playing and enjoying competitive matches. My thoughts are with those players who train Tuesday & Thursday evenings and sometimes leave the club at 8 am on Saturday morning to travel to the likes of Huddersfield or Bedford. Also included are the coaches, managers, medical personnel and committee – a huge commitment! Cricket nets soon. Gold cup on March 13th, a Friday – lucky for some! The club house will be full. Weobley Theatre Goers Our next outing is to see That’s Entertainment with Anton and Erin at Bristol on Sunday, 29th March, leaving Bell Square, Weobley, at 11.30am for the 3.00pm performance. I f you would like to go on a cancellation list, please let me know. Tickets are also available for The King’s Speech at Malvern on Wednesday 29th April. We shall be leaving Bell Square, Weobley, at 12.30pm for the 2.30pm performance. Jason Donovan plays Lionel Logue and Raymond Coulthard plays the part of King George V1.The King’s Speech is the heart-warming story of one man’s struggle to overcome his personal affliction and, in the country’s darkest hour, deliver the now iconic speech broadcast across the globe to inspire his people’. Tickets to include the coach are £29 payable before 28th March, with cheques made out to Kate Best please. And in November we shall be going to see something a little bit different - Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo! This is a an all-male company, founded in 1974, who perform at the Birmingham Hippodrome with a new programme of Swan Lake, Patterns in Space, Esmerelda and Don Quixote. They are winners of the Critics’ Circle National Dance Awards and ‘The Trock’s’ combination of comedy, extraordinary technical prowess and genuine love of ballet has made them a global combination. You can look online to see what fun and amazing dancing ability they demonstrate. According to The Sunday Times, ‘this is the funniest night you will ever have at the ballet’. I have reserved seats for

the 2.00pm matinee on Wednesday, 11th November, leaving Bell Square, Weobley, at 10.00am, to allow a couple of hours before the show to eat or look around the area. Herefordshire Carers Support – do you look after a relative or friend? If you provide support for someone who is ill, elderly or has disability and that person cannot manage without your help you may wish to register as a Carer. There are no restrictions and you may wish to register with Herefordshire Carers Support (HCS is a registered charity working with carers). The last Census shows that there are about 17,500 Carers in Herefordshire – only about 3,200 of them are registered. The more Carers that are registered, the stronger their voice to ensure that Carers are recognised, valued and receive better services. Not only can you book doctors’ appointments but now access blood test results etc on-line.
