Dear Parishioners, May I wish you and your families and friends a healthy, happy and blessed New Year. God willing William Tavernor will turn 100 on New Year’s Eve and you will join with me in Church at 10.30am on New Year’s Day to join in the celebrations of his birthday and also of his 75 years as a priest. He became a priest on St Thomas’ Day (when that was celebrated on the 21st December). St Thomas, we remember because he was the one who was missing when the Risen Lord Jesus appeared to the disciples and he would not believe unless he himself saw the marks of the wounds in Jesus’ hands and the marks of the spear wound in his side. We call him doubting Thomas, but his was an honest doubting, in that he wanted to believe and searched for the thing that would convince him. Thomas was the first to exclaim to Jesus (when Jesus answered his demands) MY LORD AND MY GOD. Well I take my hat off to William who has been faithful to his Lord Jesus, his priesthood and to the Church for 75 years and may 2017 be a year of honest searching for us for the way of
truth and light and may the faith in Jesus help us in that. On 8th Jan we will celebrate Plough Sunday and pray for all our farmers as they begin a new year of making the land ready for a new harvest. We are surrounded by farm land and as you travel the roads and see the fields being ploughed and sown, say a prayer for our farmers and their families. At the end of January - on the 29th - we will be together over at Aymestrey as we think about the history of this part of the world, and the battle of Mortimer’s Cross fought on February 2nd 1461. The service is at 10.30 am and will be informative as well as worshipful so do come along and join us. And finally thank you to all who helped Christmas 2016 be such a special and joyous occasion! Luctonians Sports Club Some doom and gloom as the 1st XV’s run of narrow defeats continues. The long distance to away matches is testing the most ardent of players and supporters. Additionally the long list of injuries gives cause for concern –especially as some are proving slow to repair. It is hoped that the Christmas break will enable a fresh start in the New Year and a change in fortunes. On the bright side the sell-out of all pre-match lunches on home games, and the standard of catering, continues to amaze opposition committee members. The second, third, and Colts teams are functioning pretty well, and there are still masses of mini players on Sundays, which augurs well for the future! Reliable opposition is a problem at times. Christmas parties in full swing. The cricketers are enjoying the absence of pressure and a chance to enjoy the social side of club life. Lucsline no.335 out now, and a good read! Good news also to hear that the Croquet section held a successful end-of-season lunch at a private house in the village. R.W.H.

RBL Poppy Appeal Colouring Competition Thank you to Kingsland Pre-school and Lucton School for entering the colouring competition organised by Richard Brown in aid of the Poppy Appeal. The competition raised ÂŁ96. Many thanks to all those who took part! Joan Lobb, 27/7/27–4/9/16 On the 20th September Kingsland Methodist Church was filled with Joan’s family, friends, neighbours and Methodists from many of our local churches. We had gathered to support the family following her very sudden, but peaceful, passing and to celebrate the life of a wonderful Christian lady who we all miss deeply. The hymns and readings were all chosen by Joan. Such preparedness and attention to detail was typical of her throughout her life. She came to Kingsland in 1979 following the death of her husband Hedley and was soon involved in village life. The Methodist Church was closed at that time but along with the Revd Warren Bardesley she was one of the instigators of its reopening. She worked tirelessly for the church: open gardens, coffee mornings, Traidcraft days, Carol Services, Christmas Tree Festivals, flower festivals and even a Wesley Tableau in the village carnival. She was the senior Steward until the very end of her life, looked after the garden as only a trained horticulturist could, and took her turn with the flowers, readings and mastered the electronic organ! She also organised craft activities for the Circuit Youth Activity days. Joan was often to be seen cycling round the village with Bunty, her Yorkshire terrier enjoying a ride in the saddlebag! She was a member of the WI, supported soup lunches, coffee mornings, Fetes and often manned the plant stall where her knowledge proved invaluable. For a time she was also organiser of the village Meals on Wheels service and she was still knitting jumpers for Romania and collecting little bits throughout the year to fill Christmas Shoe Boxes. Joan leaves a very big hole in all our lives and we will continue to hold all her family in our prayers.

KINGSLAND HOMES Do you want to apply for any of the three Affordable Rented or three Shared Ownership properties in Kingsland? All the homes are located in the new development by St Mary’s Farm off Longford, and should be available by April 2017. Affordable Rented properties? - Section 106 Application. For rural affordable housing schemes, such as the Kingsland new development, the section 106 agreement includes clauses to ensure that the homes remain affordable in perpetuity to meet local identified households' needs now and in the future. Applicants for these properties will require a local connection to the parish of Kingsland, however, if properties remain empty and no one with a local connection is seeking rehousing at that time the properties will then be advertised to households with local connections to the cascading parishes. How to apply Anyone who is interested in this development will need to complete a Homepoint application form, this can be either a paper version on through the online process. Please make sure that you write 'section 106 application' at the top of the application form or in the notes section of the online version or they will not know that your application is covered by a section 106 agreement and it may be declined. Weobley Theatre Goers
A happy new year to all our theatre goers! Maybe this is a good time to welcome anyone new to the area and to let you know about our theatre trips. We leave by coach from Bell Square, Weobley (near the corner car park) and are dropped off at the door (or as near as possible) of the theatre. We go to the matinee performances, so that we are not back too late. The trips to Malvern take about one hour each way and to Birmingham, Cardiff or Bristol two hours. Trips need to be paid within two weeks of reserving the tickets and the tickets are given out on the coach. I always try to get the best seats (which is why I often have to book well in advance of the show), usually in the circle. You can pick and choose which shows you want to go to, and do please come along if you are on your own – there are always plenty of people who are in a similar position. Our next trip is on 9th March, when we shall be going to Birmingham to see Billy Elliot. The coach is leaving Weobley at 9.30am for the 2.00pm performance, so please be at Bell Square by 9.15am. Our last trip of the season is to see Funny Girl on 10th May. This is now booked, but let me know if you would like to go on the cancellation list for this or Billy Elliot as sometimes people are unable to go at the last minute. Events very much influenced by the weather. Following a few sharp seasonal frosts it is back to mild, damp conditions. The appetites of birds and animals reflect the warmer spell. The resident cock pheasant has an early breakfast, and wanders off to pick grass and other greenery. The river is back to a low level. I heard a report of a large number of Salmon below the weir at Ludlow on the Teme. The triple bark of a dog Fox heard in the middle of the night as the annual search for a mate arrives. Foxes have exceptional hearing ability. There are plenty of them around, to the delight of the hunting fraternity. Grey Squirrels continue to impress with their ability to breed and populate many areas. There has been a report of twenty being trapped in one village location, and numbers seen on all shoots. Rabbits also abound in certain areas including the churchyard. There is nothing nicer than rabbit stew with carrots and onions in the mix – ask Mary Berry. Days are short of daylight at present! When you read this Christmas will have come and gone, and it will be 2017 – a scary thought! R.W.H.

Will your Household Insurance be affected by Flood Risk? Some householders in Kingsland are getting an unpleasant shock when the time comes to renew their household insurance. In one instance an annual premium of £450 was increased to £1,800 on the basis of an increased risk of flooding. The problem seems to lie in an unintended consequence of the Government’s Flood-Re scheme, which is supposed to facilitate insurance in flood-prone areas. Unfortunately, such areas are defined by post-code so that if one property is deemed to be at risk, all other properties within that code are similarly classified even if built on a higher level. The result is that far from helping householders the scheme has resulted in many people facing higher premiums despite not being at any risk of flood.
It is however possible to challenge such demands. ‘Long Term Flood Risk Information’ is a government-run website that gives flood-risk assessment for individual addresses. Most properties in Kingsland are defined on this site as being at very low risk. Another useful site is the Environmental Agency’s Flood Map for Planning which can be used to obtain a large-scale plan of the local flood zones, which affect just a handful of properties around the rivers Lugg and Arrow. Using these sites as evidence, together with the threat of involving the Insurance Ombudsman in what was clearly a case of unfair practice the home-owner concerned was able to negotiate their premium back down to £500. Kingsland Bowling Club - year's end and looking forward. Our new Committee had its first session on 28th November; Chairman Rob was pleased to welcome a blend of old and new, and to note that for 2017 we have a full complement of officials. We all enjoyed the Bar Manager's contribution; she stated 'The new beers are going down well.' (Our liquidity looks good, then!) Stuart put on a good Quiz Night with some knotty historical teasers; then on 2nd December there was an exciting evening of entertainment efficiently organised by Jane and Jimmy, ably assisted by Margaret and Chris, though some of us got rattier than others! Members and visitors packed the Kingsland Coronation Hall for our Annual Bingo - tasty mince pies and equally tasty prizes - thanks to Stuart, Carol, the indefatigable caller, the ticketing lasses and all who contributed. I'd specially like to congratulate the compilers of my hamper - Cheddar cheese (I like things mature) and cognac- laced mince pies (bingle jells!) Our major bunfight was the Christmas Lunch, a spiffing spread thanks to Malcolm and Pat, Ruth and assorted elves, I mean helpers, including Chief Elf Joe who ran me over twice and also presided over the raffle. I was delighted to win back my furry rabbit, in spite of cries of 'Where's my gun?' and 'Who's a bunny boiler?'. The turkey was absolutely delicious, tender and
moist - a wonderful meal at an amazingly low cost - we are so fortunate to have such treats. Now we look forward to new work and new play - our first Winter Friday event of 2017 is 'Some Like It Hot' aka Martin and Rob's Curry Night on Friday I3th January - unlucky for some but spicier members will rejoice. There's also a Quiz Night on 27th January; galloping ahead, Race Night from Malcolm is on 10th February. We wish all our members and supporters a Peaceful and Prosperous 2017.

Bingo Thanks Betty Lister and her band of helpers held a bingo for us to raise money for SHYPP on October 22nd at the Coronation hall , Kingsland. They raised an incredible ÂŁ1000 and we all had a great night. I wanted to thank Betty and her team and all those who participated or donated a prize for making the event such a success. SHYPP (supported housing young people project) works with young people aged 16-25 across Herefordshire who are either homeless or at risk of homelessness. This money will be a huge help for us in allowing our service to continue following all the recent local authority funding cuts. Kingsland Players I am writing to let you know that I have given the money (from ‘A Christmas Cracker’) to the Church and Teddy Trust. If we are to continue we need someone to volunteer to be secretary, as I am the Treasurer and do not wish to do the administration as well. As soon as someone volunteers they can organise the next meeting and set an agenda. What ever we do next someone will need to organise that as well, as I do not wish to organise the next event. Knitting and Crochet Classes The knitting and crochet classes will start again on Tuesday, 10th January for 11 weeks to the end of March with a week off in February at half term. Shopmobility We provide mobility scooters, wheelchairs and powered wheelchairs on a daily hire basis for anyone with permanent or temporary mobility difficulties wishing to visit Hereford, Leominster, Ledbury or Ross.
