Kingsland News April 2015 Dear Parishioners, It’s amazing what you can find in the garden when you look. The children were making posies for Mothering Sunday and found all manner of colour and flower hiding in the Rectory garden that I never knew existed. Maybe that is the end of winter, all seems cold and bleak still but if you look hard enough you see signs of spring and hope in abundance.

The beginning of April coincides this year with Good Friday and the glory of Easter. Good Friday is one of those days that on the surface of it we would rather gloss over, eat hot cross buns and watch the bank holiday sport, but here lies the heart of the whole story of Jesus. Having been an amazing teacher and living the life that was true to himself and to his heavenly Father which involved giving health and wholeness to those he encountered, Jesus faced up to the world in all its negativity and sin. He stood up and did not walk away and it cost him his life, but in that encounter something happened that has changed the

world, he dealt with death and the powers of darkness and overcame them and stands now to show us how to deal with these things too!

Holy week (the week leading up to Easter) has some special services in it that help us visit this special time: on Wednesday April 1st at 6pm in Aymestrey Church there is a Taize service which is a space to sit and listen to beautiful music and readings and to light candles. It lasts about 45 minutes and I think you will find it special. On Maundy Thursday there is a service remembering the Last Supper Jesus had with his disciples at 7.30pm in Kingsland Church, a simple communion recalling how the service came to us in the first place, then on Good Friday (3rd April) we put up a cross on the Millennium Green at 9am followed by a short walk at 10.30am starting at Leinthall Earles Church of “Walking with the Cross�. Those who joined us for this last year will tell you how helpful this was. It is not far to walk, just up the bank stopping from time to time for some verses from the Bible and

a verse of a hymn, but putting the cross in place and looking down over the valley and singing “were the whole realm of nature mine, that were an offering far too small, love so amazing so divine, demands my life, my soul, my all” puts everything back into perspective again. There is a story for the children and an arm on either side for those who are frail – so come and see.

I love the abundance of flowers and relief when the churches are decorated for Easter, and 8am at Kingsland or 11am for a service that is Family-friendly and has the Easter Egg bonanza on the Green after the service! I hope that the weather will be fair for our farmers (and the rest of us). Rogation Sunday this year will be celebrated on May 17th – so put the date in your diary. This year we are going Aymestrey way and I’m grateful to John and Jane Black of Western Lye Farm for offering to host our service (more details nearer the day). It is a time to ask God’s blessing on the land and those who farm so do come and join us at 11am on that day.

Lots of things going on - it is both a blessing and a curse – we can fill our lives twice over with good things to do. Try and make sure that you don’t miss out on the important things in life. Jesus summarised what was important – love God with all your heart, and mind and soul and strength and love your neighbour as yourself. Remember that and you won’t go wrong. Sustainable Success As an active member of the local community, Kingspan Insulation is always eager to keep everyone right up to date with what it has been getting up to.

That’s why for over a decade it has been providing detailed regular reports on its drive towards improved sustainability and its wider work as a responsible employer and manufacturer.

The latest Sustainability and Responsibility Report has been produced to meet level B+ of the highly respected Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) standard. This means that the report’s findings must be backed up with external assurances.

The report gives a fascinating insight into all areas of Kingspan's work. For example, were you aware that Kingspan provides match funding of up to ÂŁ100 per employee taking part in fund raising for local charities or that it is on course to divert 80% of its factory generated waste from landfill?

It also sheds new light on some of the measures you'll have already read about in these very pages such as the ongoing work of the Kingspan Insulation Community Trust (don't forget this year's application deadline is on the 30th March!) and the new anaerobic digesters. These are now online and will soon be producing heat and power.

The reports are also a chance for you to see what Kingspan has planned over the next months and years. These ongoing aims include installing led lighting and daylight detection sensors, regularly monitoring and supporting biodiversity at the site and increasing the use of locally sourced products wherever possible.

Weobley Theatre Trips Our next trip is to see The King’s Speech at Malvern on Wednesday 29th April. We shall be leaving Bell Square, Weobley at 12.30 for the 2.30pm performance. Please ring as soon as possible if you would still like to go to this production, which has had good reviews on its tour. This will be the last of this season’s outings. However, we shall start again in the autumn with the wonderfully uplifting show, Anything Goes, at the Bristol Hippodrome on Thurs 8th October. This is sheer joyous, escapist fun!

It is a brand new production of Cole Porter’s classic, multi-award winning musical comedy.

“When Bill Crocker discovers that his heart’s desire, debutante heiress Hope Harcourt is engaged to an English aristocrat, he stows away aboard the SS American to win her back. Aided by a string of eccentric passengers on board the luxurious transatlantic liner, can this web of love be untangled before they reach Southampton? Hop aboard for sassy heroines, mischievous mob bosses, comedy capers and tap dancing sailors in this hilarious tale of romance and hi-jinks on the high seas.” Songs include I Get a Kick out of You, You’re The Top, It’s De-lovely and Anything Goes. Tickets are £46 each and we will leave Weobley, Bell Square, at 10.30am for the 2.30pm performance.

Please pay within two weeks of reserving tickets (as usual) before 6th August. Seats are in the Circle in rows B, C and D. And in November we shall be going to see something a little bit different - Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo!

in 1974, who perform at the Birmingham Hippodrome with a new programme of Swan Lake, Patterns in Space, Esmerelda and Don Quixote.

They are winners of the Critics’ Circle National Dance Awards and ‘The Trock’s’ combination of comedy, extraordinary technical prowess and genuine love of ballet has made them a global combination.

You can look online to see what fun and amazing dancing ability they demonstrate.

According to The Sunday Times, ‘this is the funniest night you will ever have at the ballet’. I have reserved seats for the 2.00pm matinee on Wednesday 11th November, leaving Bell Square, Weobley at 10.00, to allow a couple of hours before the show to eat or look around the area. We have central seats in rows B and C in the circle, at a cost of £48 to include the coach. Please pay before 20th April.

Remember: Anyone is welcome on these trips – there is no membership.

Just come along to any shows that take your fancy! There is no need to miss the wonderful opportunities of top productions just because we ‘live in the sticks’!

Teddy Bears for Syria Do you have a teddy bear you could give to a suffering child in Syria? For the past two years we have been collecting and sending second-hand teddies and soft toys to abused children in South Africa.

The teddies are donated by local people and distributed

by Rotary International in the townships where they are given to children in hospitals, hospices and crisis centres.

Now, through the Syria Relief and Development Organisation, we have the opportunity of sending thousands of teddies to children suffering the most appalling hardships in Syrian towns and cities.

Teddies, given with love by a child in the UK, can bring comfort and maybe even some healing to a suffering child.

Teddies must be clean and in good condition (cuddly please!) give them a hug and then put them in the tub!

Fund-raising for Midland Air Ambulance

Including Oil-fired and Central Heating Boilers Luctonians Sports Club Eventful weeks are seeing a great deal of ongoing activity. The 1st XV Rugby team is enjoying great support in the competition to survive in their national league without relegation.

This supportBoilers was underlined Heating when more than one hundred members made their way to Birmingham & Solihull on March 7th to witness a very important 22-41 win due to an outstanding team performance. The competition for team places is keen so training is well-attended.

The same is true for all the other teams.

Club house and catering facilities are extremely busy with full sales of prematch lunches a regular occurrence. The now annual Gold-Cup Race day on March 13th was another memorable day, helped by the success of the VicePresident’s horse ‘Next Sensation’ in winning the final race at 16:1. More fresh faces are attending the club. Coaching courses are available for those who’re interested. New club administrator, Alex Smith, has made a seamless changeover from Simon Green-Price. The turnover is increasing, with all sports sections active.

Our Conservation Area The parish council would like to remind you of the conservation area that exists in Kingsland. Conservation areas are defined by The Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990 as: "areas of special architectural or historic interest, the character or appearance of which it is desirable to preserve or enhance". The Kingsland conservation area is highlighted in the map, opposite.

A conservation area is an area of special interest, not only due to the buildings but also the interaction of the spaces around them and natural features, such as trees and open spaces. The principal effects of designation are:  You must get consent from Herefordshire Council for the demolition of most buildings in the area;  You must notify Herefordshire Council in writing on the official notification form six weeks in advance of all proposed tree works. There are fines for noncompliance with conservation area provisions in relation to trees, and a suitably qualified and insured tree surgeon should carry out the tree work;  Special publicity must be given to planning applications for development in the area;  When assessing planning applications, Herefordshire Council and the Secretary of State take into account the desirability of preserving or enhancing the character or appearance of the area; and  Permitted development rights (the various categories of development that are normally allowed without the need to apply for planning permission) are more restricted within a conservation area. Generally, these extra controls restrict the following – Various types of wall cladding, the insertion of dormer windows, the installation of satellite dishes on walls and roofs facing a highway, the installation of radio masts, antennae or radio equipment housing with a volume over two cubic metres, a reduction in the size of residential and industrial extensions, which may be carried out without the need for planning permission, and the installation of solar panels.

Nature Notes 11/3/15 The weather is typically and seasonably chilly, with the odd mild frost but little heavy rain. Spring Flowers increase daily with Daffodils dominant. Birds are pairing up, with lots of songs to be identified. My choice of a national bird would be the Wren. Like our island it is small, with a wonderful song, and does no harm to any other creature. What would be your choice?

Almost certainly the Dipper is sitting. A large black mink was seen weaving its way through undergrowth on opposite river bank, up to no good! Huge activity as the Rookery expands with much noise.

Kingsland Neighbourhood Plan News Firstly thank you to everyone who responded to the community consultation for the draft Neighbourhood Plan. Every response has been considered and you will be able to see the outcomes once they are published which will be when our amended plan goes to Herefordshire Council for a further 'Regulation 16' 6 week public consultation.

At the moment we are not sure when this will be as we are awaiting the outcome of the independent examination of Herefordshire Council's Core Strategy to see if there are any changes that we have to incorporate into the amended plan.

This also means we have no meetings booked as this also depends on when the council publish the changes, but please keep an eye out for posters on the Village Noticeboard by the school and in the Post Office, as well as on the Kingsland Life website where we will also publish latest news and future meeting details. Come along, meet the Committee and players and have a go, even if you haven’t played for a while, or have never played – once you start you’ll be hooked!

St Michael’s Hospice As of March 2015, phase one of the St Michael's Hospice Redevelopment has been completed, and we couldn't be more delighted with the progress thus far.

Although there is a great deal of rehabilitation to be done in the original building, the Hospice's medical and administrative teams have successfully moved into our beautifully designed offices and spaces within the Inpatient Unit.

Ruth Denison, Head of Fundraising, said, "It was a real team effort; all the Hospice departments pulled together to ensure that everything ran smoothly and to plan.

We couldn't have done it without the help of the NatWest private banking

team from the West Midlands, who worked tirelessly on the day and saved us further expense. Local businesses such as GB Liners were also incredibly important in helping us keep the move on schedule."

Ruth continued, "This is of course only the first phase: we still have a great deal of renovation work scheduled for the first set of buildings we've now vacated, so we can offer support to even more families through better Day Hospice facilities. And none of this would have been possible without the generous support of our community.

Because of you...we are now able to care for even more people and their families and friends when they need us most.�

Petanque After a winter season which we will keep quiet about, the petanque team are looking forward to the summer season, in a different league (we got promoted to Division 1) and at a different home venue. All change, you could say!

We are going back to our original base, the Mortimer's Cross Inn. Action is in hand to refurbish the piste (playing surface) in time for the first match of the season on Wednesday 15th April. As yet we are in blissful ignorance about whether we are playing at home or away, but it's best to be prepared . . .

Our thanks go to the Goodwin family for letting us back to our original “home”.

Petanque is fun, sociable and easy to pick up. We get to visit some great pubs. Matches start at 7.30pm on Wednesday evenings.

Many people still think adoption is only for young married couples but this is no longer the case. The only age barrier is that you must be over 21 years to adopt. There is no upper limit but you will need lots of physical and emotional energy.

Single people, those in same sex relationships and people with disabilities are welcomed as adopters.

Every year there are about 20 Herefordshire children of all ages needing a safe, stable, loving home. An informative and inspiring day of talks, workshops and activities coordinated by St Michael's Hospice focusing on demystifying death for all ages. The event will provide a safe space to discuss how to have a good death, live a good life and prepare to take control when the inevitable happens.

There will be music, discussions and stalls in the foyer from 1pm, as well as a special Death Café in the Mezzanine Restaurant. Dr Khesh Sidhu will give an illustrated talk at 2pm and 7pm entitled “Everything you wanted to know about death but were afraid to ask”. This is a funny and thoughtprovoking discussion about the experiences and regrets of the dying.

Tickets for Dr Sidhu's talks may be purchased from the Courtyard Box Office on 01432 340555: all proceeds will be donated to the Hospice. Tickets are £7.50 each, or £12 for two people.

British Red Cross Great Spring Gardening Event Renowned plants woman and horticulturist, Christine Walkden is supporting the Great Spring Gardening Event – an annual fundraiser in aid of the British Red Cross which takes place on Wednesday 29 April 2015 in Herefordshire. Once again we are delighted to hold the event at Whitfield Estate, (nr. Wormbridge, HR2 9BA,) with the kind permissions of Mr and Mrs Edward Clive and Mr Nigel Winney. The property, not generally open to the public, is located 8m SW of Hereford, on the A465 Hereford to Abergavenny road.

The event itself will take place on the parkland, but visitors will also have access to some of the private gardens.

Features include wild flowers, ponds, a walled garden, many flowering magnolias (species and hybrids), a ginkgo tree dating from 1780, and a 1½m woodland walk with a redwood grove from 1851. This annual event will feature over 80 exhibitors , nurseries, corporate supporters and sponsors will come together to provide a selection of garden related items, plants, country clothing and outdoor lifestyle ranges.

Our services support people to maintain their independence; this

could involve anything from loaning a wheelchair, providing transport to medical appointments, or supporting them to return home after a stay in hospital. Forthcoming Events. a) The Government has decided to mark the 70th Anniversary of VE Day 1945 during the weekend of 8/10 May. Val Davis will be asking all of our ”senior” members and supporters who may have lived in the village at that time how it was celebrated. I will be asking for ideas for how we might celebrate the event. Similar ideas are sought for VJ Day (15th August). b) The annual County Rally will be held in Ross-on- Wye on 7th June. Our Standard will be on parade and any members or supporters who wish to join should assemble at the Chase Hotel by 2.0pm. Further details nearer the event.

Garden of Remembrance.

The County RBL are taking the lead to create a Garden of Remembrance in the grounds of Hereford Cathedral. Part of this will be a Book of Remembrance listing all those born in Herefordshire who were killed in action from the Great War to the present day. We have sent the names of those on our local war memorials to the County Secretary but need to discover anyone who was killed either between the two World Wars or post-1945 to the present day – I have included Jean Leggat.

From the Coronation Hall The Coronation Village Hall and the adjacent playing fields, tennis courts and car park are a huge asset to Kingsland and the surrounding area.

The Village Hall Committee is responsible for raising funds to maintain the Hall and its facilities.

Due to a recent increase in costs, hiring fees for the use of the Hall will have to be raised this year. However, the grounds will continue to be free for community use. To help keep hiring costs as low as possible and to enhance the Hall’s facilities, funds are raised through the 100 Club, specific events and (where possible) by applying for grants.

With this in mind, I am writing now to invite you to join the Coronation Hall 100 Club. The cost is £24 for twelve months. A draw is held every month at Committee Meetings and the three lucky winners receive a share of the cash prize.

The Committee is extremely grateful for the regular support of our existing 100 Club members and more members are welcome. If you wish to join the Coronation Hall 100 Club, application forms are available from Markham’s Garage.

Kingsland W I At our March meeting we were pleased to welcome several visitors to enjoy with us Pam Bufton's ‘Flowers for Easter.’

She made 5 very different arrangements, starting with small basket using foliage from hedera helix, hebe and euonymus. This was finished with tête-a-tête daffodils, white spray carnations and a very delicate pale yellow broom. Next came a minimalist modern arrangement of large ivy leaves, 3 irises and a stem of twisted willow.

Then an oasis ring on a foam base with 3 groups of foliage finished with yellow roses, blue statice and white carnations was created, with a candle in the centre.

A cross constructed of red cornus was the fourth arrangement. Large ivy leaves (Paddy's Pride) were attached to the centre with trailing grasses, white carnations and light red lilies. The finale was a double decker arrangement in a large metal frame. This Pam started with dark foliage of ferns and laurel and light foliage of yellow splotched euonymus. She added yellow chrysanths, full blown deep red roses, light red alstroemerias, and red carnations, finished with sprays of the delicate flowered broom. A spectacular fireworks display! Pam contributed these arrangements for our raffle so several people went home with some lovely flowers.

Our next meeting will be on the 8th April, the speaker Mr Kenneth Reeve on his experience as an evacuee in WW2. You are very welcome to attend.

It is hopeful that the situation will improve within the next month.

February 2015 Annual Patients’ Survey: After the low response last year, your PPG has tried to give more publicity to this year’s survey and hand delivered some 1,800 copies. Thank you to all the volunteers who helped and to those 241 who returned the form and 39 who replied on line.

The practice welcomes the opportunity for patients to voice their opinions in a bid to improve services. Many interesting questions and ideas have been raised and will be discussed at the next PPG meeting. We hope to be able to tell you more in the May article.

Weobley & District Local History Society The last meeting for the winter programme will be on Wednesday 22nd of April at 7.30pm at Hopelands when Julia Orton-Davies will tell us about the munitions factory at Rotherwas.

Summer Outing: Wednesday 24th June 2015 Outing by coach to Upton Cressett Hall near Bridgnorth, Shropshire, the home of Mr William and Lady Laura Cash.

The 2.30pm tour of the house and gardens will be followed by tea and cake.

We intend to leave Weobley by coach in mid-morning and stop for a light lunch en route. Over its remarkable history, dating back to the 12th century, Upton Cressett has hosted such historic figures as young King Edward V (the eldest 'Prince in the Tower') on his way from Ludlow castle to the Tower, Prince Rupert of the Rhine during the Civil War, and Baroness Thatcher, after whom her bedroom in The Gatehouse is now named.

Dating back to the Domesday Book, the ancient manorial complex of Upton Cressett includes a fine Norman church, a medieval ornamental water garden with fish ponds and moat, a Deserted Medieval Village and a Roman Site, regarded as one of the most important in the Midlands outside Wroxeter.

The Local History Museum in Back Lane, Weobley has amended opening hours for the coming season which you might like to note. It is open from the beginning of April to the end of September on Mondays from 10am to 1pm and on Thursdays from 2pm to 5pm. It is also open on Bank Holiday Monday afternoons from 2pm to 5pm and at any other reasonable time by arrangement.

Hereford Music Festival I was privileged to hear two Kingsland School Choirs take part in classes for Key Stage 1 pupils and Key Stage 2 pupils at the Hereford Festival on the morning of Tuesday 17th March at the Courtyard Theatre, Hereford. Both groups absolutely excelled. The singing was bright and exciting, and all the children were professional and disciplined, following their conductor, Mrs Daniel, intently. The younger group sang of the Owl & the Pussy Cat, and a rap song about a crocodile.

The Lone Ranger & Tonto walked into a saloon and sat down to drink a beer. After a few minutes, a tall cowboy walked in and said "Who owns the big white horse outside?" The Lone Ranger stood up, hitched his gun belt, and said "I do....why?"

The cowboy looked at the Lone Ranger and said, "I just thought you'd like to know that your horse is about dead outside!!"

The Lone Ranger and Tonto rushed outside and sure enough, Silver was ready to die from heat exhaustion. The Lone Ranger got the horse water and soon Silver was starting to feel a little better.

The Lone Ranger turned to Tonto and said, "Tonto, I want you to run around Silver and see if you can create enough of a breeze to make him start to feel better." Tonto said, "Sure, Kemosabe" and took off running circles around Silver.

Not able to do anything else but wait, the Lone Ranger returned to the saloon to finish his drink.

A few minutes later, another cowboy struts into the bar and asks, "Who owns that big white horse outside?" The Lone Ranger stands again, and claims, "I do, what's wrong with him this time?"

"Nothing, but you left your injun runninl!"
