Kingsland News July 2015 Dear Parishioners, What a busy, exciting and worthwhile few weeks it has been! The rogation service hidden away in the hills behind Aymestrey reminded us of the many farms tucked away working to bring us food for the table and our prayers were asked for all those who tend the land and for the land and the animals – for seasonable weather (enough rain at the right time) and for the food chain (the links between the farmers, suppliers and supermarkets especially). We had a special service gathering together at Eardisland for Christian Aid where we prayed for and looked at the work of those who seek to bring aid and help to those across the world in poverty, strife and places where disaster has struck. £480 was raised from the service and lunch that followed – thank you to all those who came. 12,000 teddies were sent on their way to Syria through the inspiration of Ellie Target and the local team she gathered to pack and mend (thank you Edna) and I

had the privilege of blessing the packed truck as it was sent on its way (on behalf of all the churches across the diocese who had contributed). In Kingsland Church itself we welcomed members and vicars from the churches of the Leominster Deanery to a special Deanery service and the Kingsland Choir who faithfully lead our worship each week were on splendid form to inspire us on this occasion. Thank you! And then the church was full for the service of confirmation as 13 persons, young and not quite so young were confirmed by the Bishop of Ludlow. They, themselves, made the promises made on their behalf when they were baptised when very young, and the bishop laid hands on them and asked for God’s Holy Spirit to be with them all their days. On the back of all this we thank Vicky Sowerbutts from the Bell House for hosting the coffee morning that raised more than £340 for church funds. As I write this preparations are in hand for the

Gala Evening to be held at the end of June. That looks to be a splendid occasion and I will write more about that next time. July is the month when my eldest son is getting married over in Oxfordshire at the end of the month and I ask you to remember all of our young people as they set out on life, especially those leaving schools and colleges at the end of the academic year as they seek the next chapter of their lives and look for direction and employment. Kingsland Progressive Supper 2.

Around 12 to 15 members are now using the gym under the grandstand to build up muscle and fitness, using the various pieces of equipment available. The Cricket section is good with three senior teams in stout heart. A further ongoing funding project aims to supplement the substantial grant awarded to the club to build additional changing rooms near the Cricket pavilion. These will be available for all organised sports and special days, such as the ‘Minis’ Festival. Have you noticed the orange poppies on the nicely attended flower beds when the sun is out? The volunteers continue to meet each Wednesday to tidy up generally and do any other small jobs that require attention. Archery is the latest sport to be added to the other activities – Robin Hood is to be head coach – bring your own arrows! The ground looks a picture, and reflects the care taken by those who keep it this way.

A big 'thank you' to everyone who joined in and supported the progressive supper - a good evening was had by all! The school and pre-school are very appreciative of the £1,173.00 raised and that will, of course, be put to good use. Thanks again - onwards and upwards to the next time!! Trina Sampson

As you may be aware I undertook a sponsored walk on Sunday, May 24th, to get much-needed exercise and to support Cancer Research and the Stroke Association. Walking with a colleague, we climbed up and down Mount Snowden, the highest mountain in England and Wales. In spite of appalling weather, more likely to create rust than sunburn, we managed to do the walk in 5 hours both ways. Kingsland CE Primary School says ‘Thank you, again.’ We can hardly believe that we are approaching the end of another wonderful school year. Again, we have so much to be thankful for and to thank each of you for; we feel enriched by being part of this community and trust that, in turn, the village benefits from having a popular and vibrant school at its heart. We were thrilled this year to be one of three schools identified by Herefordshire’s Learning and Achievement team for ‘consistently performing above national expectations.’ We have also been designated as a National Support School to share good practice with schools across the county and beyond. The entire school team is made up of ‘second milers’ who give of their very best to ensure that each child can flourish academically, physically, spiritually and socially. This is even more admirable as we face considerable challenges in terms of funding and space. I know that many of you will want to join us in celebrating Marion Webster’s twentysix years of service to our school. She leaves us in July for a truly welldeserved retirement which we pray will be blessed with peace, health and joy in abundance. We also say farewell to our wonderful teaching assistant, Trish Tighe, who is leaving the village with her daughter, Hannah, to live in Newport, Staffordshire.

We appreciate that your support and encouragement, demonstrated in so many ways, contributes to our success in nurturing confident, hard-working and considerate children, rooted in Christian values, who are able to realise their own unique skills and talents. Several of you come into school regularly to share your passion for reading with the children. We particularly miss Ruth Fisher and Audrey Symonds who have given many hours to help in this way. David Noon played the piano for us in the Herefordshire Performing Arts Festival in which we were recognised as the performers of the year. Jackie and Bryan Markham open up their home for children to have weekly piano lessons. Friends from Kingsland Church have prepared for really special ‘Open the Book’ worship times and an inspirational ‘Experience Church’ day, as well as donating and wrapping Mothering Sunday gifts for each child to give. Rev Julie leads our Worship Time in school every Thursday afternoon. Those of you who shared in the Progressive Supper raised a considerable amount of money which we plan to use to improve the outdoor environment. When we have a water leak Shane or Steve are there and, when a spider crawled across a heat sensor setting off the alarm system, our very own fire brigade came to the rescue! What could be better? Kingsland Flower Show This is to remind you all that the show will be held in the Coronation Hall on Saturday 1st August 2015. A copy of the Schedule was enclosed with June edition of the Kingsland News. However, if for some reason you are not in receipt of a Schedule, copies are available at the Village Post Office, Markhams Garage or can be obtained from the Secretary, Caroline Southgate, from whom additional copies of the entry forms can also be obtained. Many of the regular items are retained in the vegetable, floral and produce classes so we hope you will be busying yourselves in the garden and kitchen in readiness. There is also an interesting range of items for the Junior age groups including prizes for A Line Drawing

titled â&#x20AC;&#x153;My Kingslandâ&#x20AC;?. The subject for the Open Junior Section this year is A Flower made from recycled materials, so start looking at what goes in the green bin. The Men Only class is looking for A hat made from newspaper, so put your thinking cap on gents for a good design - keeping page 3 under wraps! A reminder for those successful winners of cups at last year's Show, we would ask you to return them to either Carol Davies (9 Orchard Close), Jean Barbour (Village Post Office) or Caroline Southgate (Stone Mill, The Wardens) by early July please. 14 Nature Notes 13/6/15 As always, lots to observe as summer gradually takes over from spring! The soft refreshing rain falls as I pen these words – very welcome after a long and cold dry spell. Parent birds are frantically feeding their young. Blue Tits are fledged and away into the big dangerous world. Swallows seem just to enjoy flying around and into their newly constructed homes. What wonderful braking ability! I have observed a Wren taking great care when approaching its nest with food, watching out for any predators. There are no Spotted Flycatcher here, but it is good to hear of two pairs nesting at a property in North Road. A dead Hedgehog was found in a village garden with its inside eaten out, a Badger being the suspected culprit. No Lapwings, Curlews, or Skylarks round here, but there is news of two pairs of Lapwings hopefully breeding in a field of late-planted Oil- seed Rape. I had a rare sight of some Sandmartin skimming up and down the river. Very few fish are rising – a good challenge to visiting fishermen. Garden and wild flowers are at their seasonal best, a lot soon over. As if by magic Wheat fields suddenly come into head. Silaging and sheep shearing mostly completed, and everything is looking forward to warm balmy days. Some, perhaps, look forward to a snooze in the shade! Have a good day! R.W.H.

Kingsland Bowling Club – recent activity. The wind has been like ice, but our hardy bowlers go on bowling – though a white fleece is a handy article and looks good on the green! An enthusiastic group of new and potential members has braved the cold evenings to find out more about bowling techniques with our proactive vice-captain and to enjoy a chat, a drink, and a hot-dog - welcome to all. Our new summer carpark is proving to be a real asset to members and visitors; we had over 30 cars safely parked next to the club for the Tournament instead of taking up space in the village hall carpark or on the street. The Annual Tournament on 25th May was a great success, with 20 local teams taking part – thanks to all who participated, to our generous sponsors G P Thomas &Son, to our hard-working club volunteers, and to our wonderful multi-tasking club captain, who has organised this splendid event for several years. At around 8 am, the delicious smell of bacon baps was drifting across the green, and an excellent lunch was provided by our very efficient catering manager as teams played through the day. A Ledbury team was the eventual winner. In fact, we have already had the pleasure of competing at Ledbury. Our teams have lots of opportunities to visit surrounding towns, meet our opposite numbers, and take in some scenic views – so far our club and Men’s League matches have included visits to Eastnor, Hereford, Hay-on-Wye, Ross and Llandrindod Wells, as well as Kidderminster. We do get around when we’re not enjoying our own lovely green - become a bowler, travel the county, and on into Wales!

We are very pleased to say that our Men’s County Rink has won through to the competition finals and will be playing against a Cambridge team at Leamington on 16th August; we are also very proud of our Chairman who was selected to play in the Herefordshire match against Cornwall recently – congratulations to all of you, and the best of luck to those in the various competitions. Our next club event is our Summer Party on Friday evening, 10th July, when members and guests can enjoy good food, good company and a variety of fun activities. We have a CLUB NIGHT every TUESDAY in the summer season from about 6 pm – visitors are welcome to come and try the game and see our excellent facilities, which include a county standard green and a well-stocked bar. Staff News – Dr Kemp returned on 1st June attending both Kingsland and Leintwardine. Sandra Wallis also returned at the beginning of June. GP Initiative – The doctors have suggested that it might be helpful and interesting to include items about common conditions. This month is the first, as follows: Infective Conjunctivitis – is a common problem, especially in children. The eye becomes red, irritated frequently with a sticky discharge. Previously antibiotic eye drops have been prescribed, but recent studies have shown that most cases are better after a week whether eye drops are given or not. Consequently GPs now simply recommend keeping the eye clean and possibly a lubricant eye drop if there is troublesome irritation. It is not considered necessary to keep a child off school/playgroup for the complaint. If it is particularly severe, slow to settle (2 weeks) or the diagnosis unsure, it may be necessary to seek advice from a chemist or GP. Pharmacists can also prescribe antibiotic eye drops where they are needed. So please don’t be surprised if your GP does not recommend antibiotic eye drops. They are only practicing good current evidence- based medicine. More information is available on line on websites ‘nhs choices’ or ‘patient .co.uk’ under the title of ‘infective conjunctivitis’. What is happening with the Kingsland Neighbourhood Plan? As many of you will know, progress with the Kingsland Neighbourhood Development Plan (KNDP) has been delayed. Following the community consultation on the draft plan, the KNDP was ready in March, to go to the next stage for consultation with Herefordshire Council, before examination by an independent Government Inspector. However this was not to be. Following Herefordshire Council’s own Core Strategy examination, a shortfall in the intended housing numbers for rural areas was identified. Consequently the minimum number of houses required for rural parishes such as ours is 14% of dwellings in the whole parish, and not just within the main settlements of Kingsland and Shirlheath, as had previously been advised by Herefordshire Council. What does this mean for Kingsland parish? Instead of the minimum total of around 44 dwellings needed for Kingsland village and a further 7 dwellings for Shirlheath, we now have to plan for a minimum total of 65 dwellings within the whole parish. The Steering Group has appointed independent planning consultants Data Orchard to carry out additional work and advise on the way forward. This will be funded largely by a government grant. It is thought, at this point, that with fine tweaking the current KNDP can

probably stand although there may be a need for some minor amendments to plans for Shirlheath and Cobnash. If minor changes are required, the Steering Group will consult with residents of these two settlements in due course. We will keep you all informed as we progress. Kingsland W I Two of our members joined the Hereford contingent to attend the W I Centenary Garden Party at Buckingham Palace and described their day to us at the June meeting. After an early start to catch the coach they arrived in time for the start of proceedings at 2.00 pm. The rain stopped just in time but a wind got up and blew off one or two hats! The ladies formed an aisle for the Royal party to pass along and a few were chosen to be presented. Tea followed later and a chance to wander around the beautiful gardens. We had all gone to the meeting equipped with rolling pins and aprons. Not to make pastry but to do pottery! We had a very good evening with a demonstration by Bryony Bird and then a chance for some hands on pottery, making small bowls. Bryony's technique is to use slab building. She started her career in ceramics making large low pieces but found galleries would not exhibit them as they took up too much space. She turned instead to tall and slim so that several could be displayed on one plinth, and found these were much more acceptable. We look forward to seeing our pieces again when they have been fired and glazed. Our next meeting will be on the 8th of July with Mr Raymond Morris speaking on the History of Hops. Pat Hughes
