Kingsland News August 2015 Dear Parishioners, I can report that the Gala Evening held in the marquee days after the wedding of Nick and Zara Vaughan at the end of June was amazing – so many people there and so much generosity in making it all happen that it will be an evening I won’t forget in a hurry – I even spotted a friend of mine from Shropshire who was one of the models – so a big thank you to all who made that possible. More than £10, 000 has been raised to be split between the church and the hospice which will make the running costs of both just a little bit easier and we are extremely thankful for that!! Our congratulations go to Tim Noon (David’s son) who has been appointed as the new Organist at Exeter Cathedral and will be returning to this country from New Zealand in the near future! He kindly agreed to give us an organ recital which will have happened by the time this goes to print. There will also have been the Pop up Opera in church. Both of these I know will have been stunning – so thanks to all concerned! August holds excitement too with a Taizé Service over at Eardisland

Church on 2nd August at 6pm – these services we share as they provide an oasis in an often busy world to pray and to think and to enjoy the music chants written by the community over in France which have been very popular with all ages. Come and give it a try. Also on 16th August at 3.30pm at Leinthall Church there will be a Lammas Service – this is a hands-on service and especially fun for the young (accompanied by the older). Threshing the grain and grinding it, and using it to make dough to send home to bake, along with one I will have prepared earlier, to sample! Lammas celebrates the corn harvest, the first of the corn being given to God and traditionally made into a small loaf that is used to celebrate the communion service. This is not a communion service but we will be giving thanks to God for corn harvest and bring your teddies and a picnic to enjoy the beautiful surroundings together after the service. On the last Sunday in August we will be singing Songs of Praise in Kingsland Church at 11am. We so often go to God to ask, or to say sorry, or even to say thank you – but how often do we

praise? It is an amazing way to remind us who God is, the marvellous reality of the creator (as we see those pictures of the planet Pluto), the love that is beyond all limits in the unconditional gift of the Son and the life giving force of the Spirit on whom we can rely to give us eagerness for life. Praising is good and acknowledges the reality of our faith. Onwards and upwards! Every blessing, Julie

Kingsland W I Our speaker in July on ‘The History Of Hops,’ was Ray Morris of Burford Mill Farm, Tenbury Wells. Hops arrived in Britain in the fifteenth century, probably brought in by weavers from the Netherlands. In an age when drinking water was not always safe the main drinks were cider, ale or mead. The addition of fermented hops meant that beer could be preserved. Henry VIII banned hops calling them 'The Evil Weed' but after the king's death hops were re-instated. The 1870's and 1880's were the peak years of hop growing. Today there are fewer than 50 hop growers in the country, down from 2600 in1958. Mr Morris's assistant Mike Watkins ran a DVD showing the processing of hops from harvest to finish. The hops are harvested by a tractor pulling a trailer and the men pull the whole plant down onto the trailer. They are taken to a machine, hung upside down and pass through the machine which strips off the hops. They are sorted by hand to remove the leaves and then taken to the kilns. After a lengthy drying process they are packed into large sacks called pockets which are sewn up and taken to be stored. The full hop pockets weigh 84 kilos. The processing and drying operation is labour intensive and goes on 24 hours as the hops are in the kiln overnight. This was an enjoyable and informative talk. There will be no meeting in August as we have an outing to Hereford Cathedral Garden. Next meeting on Sept 9th will be Mrs Rosemary Prosser on '1 egg or 2?' experiences of running a farm B & B. Pat Hughes

Nature Notes 16/7/15 Summer, 2015, seems to be rushing by. A considerable selection of weather, as per England, has, on the whole, been good if mostly cool. Yet again, the value of a shower of rain is evident, especially in bringing out the colours of various flowers. Bird song has much reduced, and Rooks are away, most of the time, to join large numbers of fellow members of the Corven family – not popular with most people. I saw two opposite sights during the course of half an hour. First was the pitiful sight of a Rabbit hopping around, blinded by myxomatosis, then the wonderful sight of a Kingfisher flashing by near the river for just a special moment. Wasps’ nests are appearing as they have for generations, two reported to be in bird nest boxes. Moderate fly population seen so far. Roses seem to be more colourful than ever, and fruit on various trees and plants is gradually forming, including Figs, perhaps a personal favourite. There is a report of a successful hatch of Goldcrests in a local garden. R.W.H. Kingsland Millennium Green Trust (KMGT) There will be an open meeting of the Trustees of KMGT in the Coronation Hall on Sat 12th September at 10am. Please feel free to come along and if you would like coffee beforehand, that will be available from 9.30am. Andrew Parsons (Hon Sec Tel 708592)

Weobley Theatre Goers As I had such demand for Mack and Mabel, I booked extra tickets, so there is still a couple left for our trip on Thursday 3rd December, when we go to the Cardiff Millennium Theatre. We shall leave Weobley at 11.15am for the 2.30 performance. Price is £58 to include the coach, payable within 2 weeks of reserving your seat, and latest payment by 26th August. Cheques made out to me, please. And we shall be going to see Talking Heads, performed by Stephanie Cole at Malvern on Wednesday 26th August, leaving Bell Square, Weobley, at 12.30pm for the 2.30pm performance. I have had a letter from Malvern Theatre, which is undergoing modernisation and is asking for donations towards new, more

comfortable, seating. As we go so regularly, I thought it would be nice if we could donate a seat as a group – we wouldn’t all have to sit in it at once! Malvern is a lovely theatre and we go there at least twice a year, so it would seem appropriate that we might help out. If you would like to donate to it, please send me a cheque and I will make sure it goes as one donation from Weobley Theatre Goers – for which there will be a plaque outside the stalls or circle of the theatre. We can sponsor a seat for £350, £250 or £150, so it will depend on your donations as to how much we send. Every little helps. Aid for Nepal: Two Letters.

Dear Alison,

Soup Lunch in aid of Nepal Earthquake Appeal

Thank you so much for the generous gift of £402 for INF’s disaster relief fund that we received as a donation from the soup lunch supported by the residents of Kingsland.

Thank you to everybody who supported the Soup Lunch that was held at Kingsland Bowling Club on Tuesday, 7th July in order to raise funds for the Nepal Earthquake Appeal. It was a most enjoyable event and very well attended. We are grateful to the Bowling Club for hosting the lunch in their superb Clubhouse facilities. Particular thanks go to Sandra for liaising with the Bowling Club members, the volunteers who made the delicious soups and the team who helped on the day by serving the soup and working in the kitchen. Well done to David and Lorna who organised the successful raffle and to Jackie for her general encouragement and assistance. The donation of some of the food by W M Morrisons was appreciated greatly too. Overall, the event magnificent £402.

Following the advice of Mike Smith, an ENT Consultant at Hereford Hospital who works regularly in Nepal, the money has been sent to the International Nepal Fellowship. This Charity is giving support directly to the devastated families in the rural Gorkha region, which was at the epicentre of the earthquake which occurred on 25th April 2015. Alison Parker-Morgan

We really appreciate the support at this important time for Nepal and for INF. Your gift will help families to get the help they need, both now and in the longer term as people start rebuilding their lives. Kingsland Bowling Club – News from July, 2015 Our bowls keep rolling on! - it’s just past mid-season, we have had hot sunshine, downpours and chilly winds – but bowlers are a tough lot and they are out there on the green come rain come shine. We were very lucky with our Summer Party as the rain kept off, and we enjoyed a sumptuous supper with quizzes, raffle and good company. (Target bowls foxed a few people though; it’s not easy aiming for a couple of rings on a small mat when you have been using full-size bowls on the green – some of us are too strong for this light work.) We were delighted to welcome quite a few of our new members to the party; it is such a pleasure to find we have 19 enthusiastic new recruits and we hope they enjoy all their practices and matches. Another pleasure to announce is the fact that Casey Jones and John Culver have won through to the finals of the National Over-55 Pairs, while we congratulate Joy Culver on her County Flash , and our Men’s Rink (Malcolm Morgan, John Culver, Casey Jones and Joe Scamp) came a good second in the County Championship. Well done, our valiant members – keep it up, ladies and gentlemen. We continue to tour the local greens (even if we don’t always conquer them!) and have had great hospitality at various venues including Kington, Leominster, Eardisland and Weobley. Recently it was our turn to host a President’s Game, where the Herefordshire County President fields a team from various clubs. The first event of this friendly match was the

Spider. This was quite a picture; bowlers in glowing white stood all round the green with one bowl each and launched them at a jack in the middle. It has to be seen to be believed, bowls converge on the target like filings onto a magnet. The competition raised a good sum to go to the Visually Impaired Bowlers organisation. We also had the pleasure of helping to host a Soup Lunch in aid of Nepal which was organised by Kingsland; we appreciate the fact that we were given the chance to participate and to contribute to the life of the lovely village where we play and socialise. We have a Club Night every Tuesday in the summer season from about 6 pm – visitors are welcome to come and try the game and see our excellent facilities, which include a county standard green and a well-stocked bar. We are currently offering 6 free coaching sessions for new members. If you want to know more about us, please feel free to contact Committee Members: Club Secretary: Joan Brigden 01568 615962 Vice-Chairman Robert Parker-Morgan 01568 709331

On Top of the World With summer well and truly here, local children have been putting themselves to the test at their school sports days, and they’re not the only ones who’ve been going for gold. Kingspan Insulation’s site at Pembridge has now been awarded a World Class Operation Management (WCOM) Gold award. This latest award has been a real team effort and marks another major milestone in Kingspan Insulation’s journey of continuous improvement, helping to prove that manufacturing facilities here in Herefordshire are right up there with the some of the best factories in the world! The WCOM programme covers nine different areas including engagement, quality, maintenance, and production; each with its own road map to success. Companies are then given an overall level based on the weighted average of the scores for each area. Of course, these areas are heavily intertwined so improvements in one can have positive knock-on effects in others. For example, better engagement amongst staff leads to further reduction in processing losses such as waste or lost time. Most of Kingspan Insulation’s work at the site has focused on improvements in manufacturing processes and this area has already seen great progress. One of the biggest success stories has been on the Kooltherm line where production waste has been cut by an incredible 70% in the last 8 years alone. As part of the WCOM process, the facility will be externally audited and scored every single year. This will help to support Kingspan Insulation’s programme of continuous improvement, with a particular emphasis being placed on further improvements in quality, staff training and engagement.

Land’s End to John O Groats Bike Ride. May 16th to 29th 2015. Simon Powney and Christopher Moore in Memory of Edward Moore for The Bobby Moore Trust for Cancer Research UK. Well we made it! After 974 miles, 14 days, 1 minor accident and most weather conditions possible, we arrived in John O Groats on Friday 29th May in the early afternoon! What a journey! Fantastic scenery throughout notably Cornwall, Dartmoor, the section along the Wye Valley through Tintern, The Lake District and The Cairngorms - all equally spectacular. We encountered panoramas, amazing bridges ,cycle tracks ,wild horses, sheep, deer, wild boar and local characters as we went. The hospitality we received was second to none and the accommodation was fantastic (we decided to go bed and breakfast rather than camp!!) We also had Martin Williams join us for 2 days and a gang from Luctonians Cycle Club who met us in Hereford and rode to the day’s conclusion in Clun. This was great and gave us the boost we needed. Other memorable events were our tour around the Glastonbury Festival Site, joining my daughter & Kingsland Preschool on their sponsored cycle ride, friends and family who came to support and cheer us on along the way, Gretna Green and Gleneagles’ golf course in Scotland.

Thank you to all who sponsored us, made cakes and helped in numerous ways, and special thanks to Jan and Nan who held a coffee morning which raised £576 for the cause. Also, of course, my amazing wife for all the support during training & the bike ride itself! At present we have raised just over £6000. We are so pleased, as we planned to raise £2000!! Last but not least we would like to thank our back up crew Bernard Hurds and Jim Airey. Without their commitment, support, humour and navigational skills this challenge would not have been possible. Simon Powney

These are the actual statements of people claiming insurance after car accidents. (supplied by a reader!)  Coming home I drove into the wrong house and collided with a tree.  The other car collided with mine without giving warning of its intention. I thought my window was down, but I found it was up, when I put my head through it.  I collided with a, stationary truck coming the other way.  A truck backed through my windscreen into my wife's face.  The chap was over the road, I had to swerve a number of times before I hit him.  I pulled away from the side of the road, glanced at my mother-inlaw, and headed over the embankment.  In an attempt to kill a fly, I drove into a telephone pole.  I had been shopping for plants all day and was on my way home; as I reached an inter-section a hedge sprang up obscuring my vision and I did not see the other car.  I had been driving for 40 years when I fell asleep at the wheel and had an accident. (Boy, was he tired)!  As I approached the intersection, a sign suddenly appeared in a place where no stop sign had ever appeared before. I was unable to stop in time to avoid the accident.  To avoid hitting the bumper of the car in front, I struck the pedestrian.  My car was legally parked as it backed into the other vehicle.  An invisible car came out of nowhere, struck my car, and vanished.  I told the police that I was not injured, but on removing my hat, found that I had fractured my skull.  I was sure the old fellow would never make it to the other side of the road when I struck him.  The pedestrian had no idea which direction to run, so I ran over him!  I saw a slow moving, sad-faced old gentleman as he bounced off the roof of my car, the indirect cause of the accident was a little man, in a small car, - with a big mouth.  I was thrown from my car as it left the road. I was later found in a ditch by some stray cows!  The telephone pole was approaching: I was attempting to swerve out of the way when I struck the front end.

Dear Everyone, I am writing to “thank you” for your support with our Charity Celebration Gala Evening.

We had a fantastic time, made possible by your input and

involvement. Nearly 300 people joined us and from all of the people involved in the evening, an amount of £10,000 to £12,000 was raised. I, along with Jean Barbour who was an amazing support to me, have been humbled by the generosity of our community.

Jean was offered the venue for a fund raiser and I asked if we

could join them. Help came from every corner! Sponsors, models, ladies of the village who did us proud with the catering, waitresses who were so slick that Pearl was asked for her card!

Sound and lighting was so professional, to

everyone who gave up their time at no cost, David Noon for being treasurer. Thank you to Peter and Janet Vaughan for allowing us to use such a stunning site. St. Michaels Hospice and Kingsland church were our charities of choice and I am proud and privileged to have been in business for 25 years, celebrated and given back to this beautiful part of the world. Thank you, such small words but truly meant, Yours sincerely, C.E Williams
