Kingsland Neighbourhood Plan News Final Public Consultation Well, after a lot of hard work our Neighbourhood Plan and numerous other documents we had to produce have all gone to Herefordshire Council. By the time you read this the 'Regulation 16', final public consultation should be underway and you may have seen the official site notices in the village and on the KingslandLife website. It will also now carry some weight when planning applications within Kingsland parish are being decided. The submitted Plan has taken account of all the comments made by parish residents and others on the draft plan earlier this year, comments from the event we held in September and all the changes made to Herefordshire Council's Core Strategy which was finally adopted in October. This consultation has to be conducted in accordance with Government regulations, so please note it is being run solely by Herefordshire Council and all comments or representations must be made direct to them. Consequently the Parish Council, Parish Clerk, The Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group or any of their members cannot accept or forward any comments or representations and any received will have to be returned. You can find the Neighbourhood Plan approved by the Parish Council and all the other consultation documents, the closing date for the consultation (at the time of writing these hadn't been confirmed), and details of how to respond to Herefordshire Council on the Neighbourhood Plan pages of KingslandLife, where there is also a link to the Herefordshire Council consultation page. You can also go direct to Herefordshire Council's website and go to 'Planning'; 'Neighbourhood Planning'; 'Draft Plans (Regulation 14) and Submitted Plans (Regulation 16)'. Once the consultation has finished, the plan then undergoes an independent inspection and finally there will be a referendum, giving everyone in the parish who is on the electoral roll the opportunity to vote on this important document. The Neighbourhood Plan is very important for our parish. Without it, we as a parish will have no influence on planning applications and where development takes place over the next 16 years. Effectively none of the views you have expressed at events, via the Parish Plan survey or other means will be taken into account when planning applications within Kingsland parish are being decided. Herefordshire Council will make all the decisions as to where any housing is built and e.g. what type and style it is under their new Rural Areas Plan. So, many thanks for all your input! Nature Notes (16/11/15) Leaves, leaves and more leaves, blowing into corners, spouting and drains – all despite there being no frost so far. Nature’s way of preparing for another year, as it provides covering and compost for new flowers and bulbs. Food and Territory is an issue for both animals and some people. As we watch the refugee situation on our screens, a very local incident here involved our resident Robin, who found the downstairs cloakroom mirror, proceeded to fight his own image, and knocked items off shelves, left evidence of much bowel movement, and lost some feathers. The door is now kept closed. The bird-table is suddenly very busy – a Greater Spotted Woodpecker and Nuthatch after the nuts and fatballs, Jackdaws sneaking away with the odd crust of bread – and a host of small birds, very nervous, flitting to and fro.
A report notes the arrival of a group of Mistle Thrushes into a lone Yew tree. Over just two days the Yew was stripped of berries, and the birds moved on. Flocks of pigeons are also appearing, presumably from Northern Europe. Rooks inspect old nests with much discussion. Grass still growing! Winter will come!! R.W.H.

Kingsland Bowling Club (mid-Oct to mid-Nov) – the fun continues! First of all, the news from our AGM on 28th October 2015; we had a good turn-out of members old and new – our appreciation to all who came to show their interest and support. We said au revoir with many thanks to several of our committee members – though I’m sure we shall still enjoy watching and playing with them on the green in the season. Our new Chairman (and former ViceChairman) is Robert Parker Morgan, a truly local lad. Pat Edwards remains as our President while Malcolm Morgan is continuing as our Captain. Susanna Checketts (your friendly neighbourhood newsletterist) is now the Secretary. We also congratulate two new members on taking up posts as our Treasurer and Social Secretary; Carol Brigden has kindly agreed to ‘shadow’ our Social Secretary Stuart this year as she has had oodles of experience, while we shall be glad of Martin’s financial expertise. Meanwhile, our ex-chairman Joe Scamp and his wife Ruth have begun our cheery Winter Social Nights with several wellattended Friday quiz nights – hands up anyone who can tell us why spacemen have Velcro in their helmets!! The quizzes are always full of fun; and we usually have a proper country snack of bread and cheese midway. This is incredibly good value for £1.50 and then there’s the chance to win prizes larger and smaller in the raffle for a little extra. It’s also a fine chance to catch up with friends and team-mates. Even more exciting is the KBC Annual Christmas Bingo, which takes place at the Kingsland Coronation Hall on 2nd December, and includes a raffle with a
variety of splendid prizes, not to mention mince pies - the bingo should start at 7.30 pm, but come early to get your seat! We have our festive Christmas Lunch on 13th December; the cost for members and guests is £10 - a snip! - but tickets for this are limited and always in demand, so contact us if interested. Friday 18th December is our Christmas Social Night. Last but not least, we would like to thank Leominster Community Centre for their fast and friendly help with some lastminute printing. Kingsland Climate Champions to the Rescue! Whilst environmental responsibility is an important agenda for us all, it is often difficult to know what we can actually do to change things. However, help is at hand in the form of Kingsland’s very own Climate Champions! 450 children from fifteen primary schools across North Herefordshire and North West Worcester, including Kingsland Primary School, earnt the elusive title after taking part in a series of fun and interactive workshops organised by Concern Universal, funded by a £6000 grant from Kingspan Insulation Community Trust. From making ‘flowerpot’ stoves which use 40% less firewood than conventional alternatives, to producing their own news reports and displays, the children learnt practical ways to improve our environment and combat climate change (whilst also having a lot of fun)! Many of the children even felt inspired to make their own personal environmental pledges; one going as far as to promise to cut his daily TVwatching to 15 minutes: an inspiration to us all as the wintery weather closes in! Why not channel Kingsland’s youngsters champion attitude and apply for a Kingspan Insulation Community Trust grant to help your own project? This followed three home matches and another sell-out of lunch tables. The downside was that the 1st XV suffered yet another loss, this time to Preston Grasshoppers 19-25, a game that so easily could have been won. However the wide range of activities continues, wellorganised by an active committee. Work has already started on additional changing facilities at the back of the Cricket Pavilion. Kingsland Ladies' Rounders Team – another successful year! Kingsland Ladies' season started well with the team winning a national competition. The team was selected by Aresson, one of the leading rounders' equipment suppliers, to become one of their three 'Team Aresson' squads. Aresson supplied us with £400 worth of equipment, which has been well used this season. With three new teams in the league this year, the matches have been very competitive. Six new players have joined our team, some who haven't played rounders for years. They joined our experienced players who soon showed them the ropes and helped them settle into the game of rounders. Everyone has played extremely well this year, resulting in the team coming third in the league. Well done to Orleton Ladies who retained their title. Thanks go to: Aresson for our new equipment; all of our sponsors who funded our league entry and insurance this year; Sue Paget for inspiring the team with her great sportsmanship and sense of humour; the rest of the Paget family who turn out week after week, rain or shine, always supportive;
our friends and supporters who come to cheer us on every week; our 15 players who have given their all this year. Their enthusiasm and commitment to the team hasn't wavered and they are a pleasure to play alongside. Their cake-making skills are second-to-none too!! As if our year wasn't busy enough, we still found time to fit in a World Record attempt. Kingsland Ladies participated in the record attempt for the most players in a rounders' match, which took place in Southampton in August. A great event, and the World Record was achieved! What a year – we have packed so much in! We are a friendly group of ladies who have fun and keep fit at the same time. If you'd like to join us, look out for the pink shirts training on Wednesdays at the Luctonians from April next year. Come along and have some fun! Dog Fouling It has become apparent to some residents along North Road that there has been an increase in dog fouling. Would the dog walkers walking their dogs along the grassed areas of the roadway along North Road between the field gate, which is by Lindens and Chapel Lane, kindly clean up your dogs’ faeces? It is appreciated that the majority of considerate dog walkers do clean up after their dogs and thank you for being responsible dog owners. Just a reminder of the local byelaw for dog walkers not clearing up after their dogs :Hereford Council Dog control order 1 - dog fouling. Royal British Legion Branch Meetings Our Quiz and Draw night on 2nd November raised £79, with some welcome assistance from visitors. The next meeting is on 7th December at the usual time at the Corners Inn. Remembrance Sunday Thankfully the rain held off and we were able to hold the event as planned. Our thanks go to Rev. Julie Read for conducting a well-supported service and to those who paraded to the War Memorial. However the RBL are getting very thin on the ground – anyone wishing to add their support to swell members would be welcomed. Upcoming Events The quarterly County Committee meeting is on 4th December. If anyone has a topic for consideration, please contact me as soon as possible. The annual pre-Christmas lunch will be held on 16th December. Tickets to guests and paying-in slips for paying members have been distributed. National membership The new payment system has caused problems. If any member has not yet received the 2016 membership card, please contact Anne Roberts soonest – she is well aware of the problem. Kingsland W I Ice cream was the subject of the Nov meeting as Alison from Just Rachel told us how the company was set up by an Oxford educated botanist called Rachel. She was dissatisfied with the ice cream she could buy and started to make her own. Alison and her family took over the business four years ago. It is a very small company based at Bromsberrow near Ledbury, with only nine staff including Alison, her husband and her daughter. They sell to Waitrose and to local companies like Barber and Manuel, and Quarry Farm. There are no additives such as guar gum in their products. They use only cream, fruit and sugar. We were offered samples of five different flavours of which our favourites were the Champagne and raspberry, and the hazelnut, praline and coffee. The company is also in the process of developing vegan and lactose intolerant varieties and may have to expand to produce these. There will not be a meeting at Coronation Hall in December as we will be going to the Angel that evening for our Christmas dinner. The Future of the Post Office The end of an era! I can almost hear some of you saying, "Thank God she’s going at last"! I am definitely saying, "Thank God I’ m going at last"!!! I arrived over sixteen years ago to a very rundown business and here we are now with the hugely increased volume of business in the Post Office and a sideline of stationery and cards which is also well supported. Chelsey Thomas, who will become the new sub-postmistress, has lots of ideas to re-invigorate sectors of the business; she has lots of drive, energy and enthusiasm, but to achieve her goals each and every one of us must do our bit to support her. We are all extremely lucky and fortunate to have had Mrs Nan Rowland-Jones come forward to purchase the building and Chelsey to take on the tenancy of the ground floor. This area is crucial to village life in so many ways, besides being the post office, shop, cafe, or whatever Chelsey plans, and it is imperative that we retain this. I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has supported me and made me feel so welcome and part of the village. Special thanks also to the many people, over 20 in total, who have been part of my team during this time. Kingsland is a very special place, we are all very lucky to be part of such a special community and we must all help and support each of the new businesses here in the village. Miracle Play We hope to produce and perform a production of an adaptation of Medieval Miracle Plays just after Easter, 2016, in Kingsland Church. (‘The Creation’ to ‘The Last Judgement’ in approximately one and a half hours!) We would like it to be a Kingsland and surrounding parish’s production, a Community Event, though a couple of leading roles could be performed by professionally trained actors. We need a minimum cast of thirty five. Many roles are only a few lines and there are some non speaking roles in the crowd scenes. We will also need backstage helpers, e.g. Costume making. Sound. Lighting. Advertising etc.
This play is an adaptation by Bridget Ford a (now retired) professional actor and director, and was first performed in Gloucestershire in 1982. It was repeated for four years running in Village churches, Malmsbury Abbey and Bristol and Gloucester Cathedrals, and only finished when the director and several cast members had moved away from the area. It is great fun to do, can use a lot of amateur actors, and is a great community project. Bridget will direct it again, and rehearsals should start in January, 2016, casting before Christmas if possible. Major speaking parts (none too big) include for men: God, Jesus, Lucifer. Noah, Adam, Moses, Pharaoh, Gabriel, Joseph, John the Baptist, Peter, Three Shepherds, Four Soldiers, Pilate, Judas. Caiphas

And for women: Eve, Mrs Noah, Miriam, Mary, Mary Magdalene, Three women (Slaughter of the Innocents,) and voices from the crowd. Weobley & District Local History Society December issue. This year’s Christmas Lunch will take place on Wednesday 13th January at The Kings House, Pembridge. We decided to postpone it until January so we have something to look forward to after the December surfeit of Turkey and Christmas Pudding! The cost will be £19.50 per head to include a choice of menu for two courses and coffee to follow. The Kings House in Pembridge is a very warm and welcoming venue with excellent food so we shall hope to see lots of members there. Further details to come and in the meantime, save the date in your diaries. 2016: January issue. On Wednesday, January 27 Jason O’Keefe will talk to the Society at Hopelands, Weobley's Village Hall at 7.30. Jason (Jason the Archer), from the Border Levy re-enactment group, will talk about the life of a 15th century archer and demonstrate the sort of clothing and weapons that helped to make archers from
our part of England such a powerful fighting force. Members and non-members are very welcome. February issue. Tim Hoverd of Herefordshire Archaeology will talk to the Society's meeting on February 24 at Weobley Village Hall at 7.30pm about The Dorstone Mounds. Investigations at Dorstone Hill in the Dore Valley, Herefordshire, have taken place annually since 2011, with the aim of investigating Neolithic settlement in the area just to the south of the chambered tomb of Arthur’s Stone. Numbers of finds dating from the Mesolithic to the Roman periods have been retrieved during field-walking over the past 70 years, and more indicate the possibility that archaeological remains relating to a number of periods exist on the promontory at Dorstone Hill.
