Kingsland News November 2014 The news across the world at the moment is rather worrying, with the Ebola epidemic raging in Africa and hostages' lives at risk under the hands of the Islamic State movement. It is with this in mind that I have put into the pattern of services for November a Vigil Service for Peace on Sunday 16 November at 6.30pm. There will be silence and readings and space to pray and I hope you will come and join your prayers with others. th
The vigil is in the month when we remember the great cost of war and especially this year when we recall that, a hundred years ago, the first world war began. Let us work and pray to make sure that the peace that we have enjoyed is treasured and guarded, and that the events we see in our newspapers are laid bare in prayer. Open the Book returns to Kingsland Church after its dramatic first story of the Good Samaritan with real live donkeys thanks to Andrew and Sue Cross! This will be on Wednesday 5 November with coffee and cakes at 2pm for friends and family and th
then the Open the Book service at 2.30pm with another instalment from the Lion Storyteller Bible. All (ages) are welcome. It finishes at 3pm in time for the Kingsland school children to get back for the buses. Lucton School is bringing a time of readings and music for remembrance on the evening of November 11 - so perhaps you will come along to that. The end of November is the beginning of Advent and time to start preparing for the coming of our Lord - the prince of peace. There will be a weekend event over the last weekend in November where you can come and buy some of your Christmas presents and enjoy some seasonal music, and then on Sunday November 30 at 6.30pm in the evening will be the Advent Carol Service - with music, readings and prayers to put everything in perspective again - our place in time and space, and the hope of the coming of Christ as we remember his birth at Christmas, and hope for his coming again to bring justice and eternal light and peace. th

2 A few events at the beginning of December to draw your attention to: The first is on Wednesday 3 December. Messy Church For Advent! This is for school children and their parents/carers (in fact you are only allowed in with a responsible adult!!!!). It runs from 3.30pm - 5.30pm and there are craft activities to have a go at together, followed by a song, story and prayer, and then supper. Watch out at school or the PO and book into this fun occasion - Messy Church comes to Kingsland. The next event is on Thursday 4 December - a SMAAAK event in the Coronation Hall. It is.Rob Heron and the Tea Pad Orchestra., And then on Friday 5 December a choir that I am involved with is coming to Kingsland to sing - it is the Edge Chamber Choir - and when I am free I am the rehearsal pianist! They are a new choir that has sung one concert in Ludlow that down surprisingly well. They don't sing usual music, but the music they sing is interesting.
improvement there. So as we journey into the darker months, have a thought for your neighbour, and make sure they have company and care. God bless.
I would like publically to thank SMAAAK as I did at their AGM in October for the £9000 they have given to the building project over this last year. And that is not all they raised! So thank you to the team who have worked tirelessly.

5 'Explore Mortimer Country History' Trail Proposal It is proposed to set up a Trail in 'Mortimer Country', that involves ten villages / towns, ten churches, and ten sites that refer to Mortimer history. It could be promoted as a trail of significant interest, that would attract local and regional visitors who are interested in beautiful villages, churches and medieval history. The theme embracing these would be the colourful history of the Mortimer family. We need the help of 2 or 3 people in each village / town with an enthusiasm for promoting their village, and with an interest in their church and history. They would work with John Grove, founder of the Mortimer History Society, in acting as coordinator for the village and promoting the Trail. In particular we would like a short article (one side of A4) with a brief description of the village - the church - the history including any Mortimer reference, and the pubseateries. John would be willing to advise on the possible content of such an article. I f the Council is interested in this proposal, a letter of support in general would be most welcome, as funding will be sought. I f you are interested in finding out more, please contact John Grove. He is also available to speak to local groups and societies on a range of topics to do with Mortimer history. We look forward to hearing from you. 7 Nature Notes 14/10/14 The incident involving a Seagull swallowing a live Mole has provoked a report of another Seagull, tapping on the window of a seaside residence, (a habit perfected in the quest for food) who was offered a lamb chop, which it swallowed whole. I marvel at the digestive system of these birds, which reminds me of the local man who having swallowed a 50p coin, was operated on in hospital. Enquiries about his condition got the reply "no change!" Winter is approaching, leaves falling, and time to reflect on the wonderful Summer of 2014 - rainfall and sunshine its vital ingredients. What type of Winter awaits? Nature has a strange way of evening things out - perhaps a white Christmas?

Building More Circles of Support ACSYL (A Circle Supporting You for Life) is pleased to report that its Community Connectors are laying the foundations for two more circles of support, and another circle is to be started next year. This will make a total of five circles for clients in Herefordshire. The organisation is also networking in neighbouring counties. Two of these clients are on the autistic spectrum. Herefordshire's Autism Strategy for 2014-2017 endorses the National Autism Strategy's vision that "all adults with autism are able to live fulfilling and rewarding lives within a society that accepts and understands them. They can get a diagnosis and access support i f they need it, and they can depend on mainstream public services to treat them fairly as individuals, helping them make the most of their talents." I f you would like to read the Autism Strategy for Herefordshire, you can download it as a pdf from http://www.acsyl.co.Uk/article/l 16/autism.html Everyone has something unique to give. ACSYL is here for anyone (whether autistic or not) who would like to feel more connected with their local community. The organisation nurtures social inclusion by building circles of friendship, advocacy and support around individuals who are at risk of isolation for whatever reason. Each circle is unique, designed to fit the central person's talents, aspirations, wishes and needs - and to adapt as these change over time. Circle membership is by invitation only, from the person at the centre. I f you know someone who might benefit from such a circle and would like more information, ring 01989 555 006, visit www.acsyl.co.uk or e-mail info@acsyl.co.uk

KINGSLAND NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN NEWS The Steering Group has been pleased to welcome two new members, Ed Wallington and Jenny Nichol who are bringing their considerable business and project management experience to the group to help us keep on track! We are moving along developing the draft Neighbourhood Plan and following on from the consultations we had in the summer, have developed further the Vision and Objectives for the parish as well as policies that developers must meet in order for us to achieve them. By the time you read this we should have had responses from the Environment Agency, Natural England and English Heritage on our Strategic Environmental Assessment and Hereford Council will be producing the final version plus a Habitats Regulation Assessment (both of these are procedures we need to go through to meet the Neighbourhood Plan statutory requirements). We are also busy contacting organisations such as Welsh Water and the archaeology department of Hereford Council for additional information to help us write the plan. All this is leading to a draft Neighbourhood Plan which we are aiming to have finished by mid November. It will then be published and open to all of you who live in the parish to comment upon during a 6
week consultation. We will be publicising the dates of the consultation and where you can read the plan nearer the time, but hope you will all make comments as it will have a big effect on how our village and parish develops and looks over the next few years. We will then use your comments to help us write the final plan which then goes to Hereford Council. Meanwhile, there is more information on the Neighbourhood Plan pages on www.kingslandlife.com; on our Facebook page (Kingsland Neighbourhood Plan) and on Twitter (KingslandNP). Leominster Priory Church Wallhanging This hanging was made 17 years ago of Ryelands fleece and canvas work roundels and we have had to take it down due to its distressed state. We know that some people from Kingsland were involved and we want to contact anyone interested in getting involved with the work on the new hanging containing these roundels. There are a 100 of varying sizes, and we anticipate the real stitching will begin in January, as we are still waiting for the Faculty before we can order the wool to be woven. Then it will be Christmas ! I can give you all the information by email or phone 01568 620668.

Kingsland Fire Station News. (Very Good News! Ed.) Great News at last! After three meetings of the fire authority members, there are, at last, some decisions, the most important for us being that Kingsland Fire Station will not close! So everyone at Kingsland Fire Station would like to thank all individuals, businesses, & Parish Councils for their help and support over the past nine months, which has been a very uncertain time for us. For our part, we will continue to give 100% cover, commitment and dedication to Kingsland and the surrounding parishes whenever you need us.

It is still sad to think that some stations have had to lose pumps and firefighters because of financial cuts. There must be a limit i f the service is to be maintained in future. At present we have eleven crew at Kingsland, so we are looking to recruit one more person. I f anyone is interested, please call at the fire station on Monday evening (drill night) between 19.00 and 21.00 hours, or call me on 01568 708701 for details. Many thanks again for your help and support, Julian Gore (watch commander)

At our October meeting the speaker was Pat Smith who gave us advice on cooking and showing cakes and preserves. Jams and preserves should be in plain l i b or 8oz jars, no commercial looking jars should be used. Labels should be small and placed low down on the jar. Ingredients should be listed on a small label on the back. New lids should be used and put on while the jam is hot to provide a good seal. I f using paper covers the wax circle should be put on while the jam is hot but the paper cover when it is cold. Marmalade peel must be sliced not chopped in a food processor. Chutney must be made at least 2 months before the show, preferably the year before. Fruit pies and mince pies should have no pastry decoration on top, just a sprinkling of caster sugar, but savoury tarts can be decorated. Jam tarts should all be filled with the same jam. Sponge cakes must be filled with shop bought jam rather than home-made. For savoury scones and biscuits a plain cutter should be used; a fluted cutter for sweet biscuits and fruit scones. These are a few of the tips passed on to us by Mrs Smith. Now all we need to do is remember them until our next W I Show in 2015!Next month is our A G M and the speaker will be Mrs Collette Gray on Dressing Table Items from the Past. Pat Hushes

Royal British Legion Annual General Meeting. Attendance at the AGM on 6 October was the lowest on record - there were twice as many apologies as there were attendees. However, it was decided to continue as we had to agree the 2014 accounts, other expenditure and the future programme. Minutes of the meeting and the 2014/15 programme are being distributed to all members. Should any member object to the decisions made, they are to contact either the Branch Secretary or myself as soon as possible. The main points of the meeting were:th
a.
Branch Officers remain unchanged.
b. The Widow/Widowers lunch will be held at the Corners Inn on 1 0 December at 12.00 noon for 12.30. The cost for paying members will be £15 and a reply slip will be circulated next month. A prize draw for three hampers will be held. th
c. The Branch Standard will not be paraded at this year's Remembrance Service. The Standard bearer will be attending the Festival of Remembrance in London and hopes to parade our Standard at the Cenotaph march past on 9 November. th
d. We hope to hold a major fund-raising event at the Corners Innin August 2015 (details to be decided). e. On the last weekend of November, Mrs Roberts will be displaying a RBL Christmas tree in the Methodist Chapel and holding a book-stall in St Michaels Church. She would welcome any books (in good condition) nearer the time. f. The 2013 Poppy Appeal for Kingsland raised over £4,400. This year's appeal starts on Saturday 25 October. th
Next Meeting. The next meeting will be our usual Quiz and Draw night at the Corners Inn on 3 November at 7.45pm rd

Luctonians Sports Club The realities of the standards of Rugby in National League, North 2 are evident. Long distances to travel for away matches, injuries, huge commitment to training and fitness, and lack of size are factors that are affecting the 1 X V s results. The 2 X V is strong, plays attacking Rugby at speed, and is proving too much for a number of opposing teams. The Knights (3 X V ) are having a difficult spell and this is being addressed by management. Other sections are very active, new floodlights are working, and pre-1 X V home match luncheons are virtually sell-outs! The ground is in excellent condition, and being well-used. It will get wetter! st
