REPRESENTING ALL THE VILLAGE
F
irstly, may we hope that you all enjoyed the Christmas break, and we wish you all a, slightly belated, happy and prosperous new year. Well, things have been happening since my previous report. Firstly, the lake that we christened ‘Lake Victoria’ has disappeared..!! Huge thanks to Surrey County Council for resolving this longrunning issue. The new arrangement seems to have coped well with the few downpours that we have experienced since the repair. Secondly, our new village sign that was the subject of the previous report. It still looks great even though it’s been standing through some wet weather for several months now. We are also planning to

refurbish the original village signs. And thirdly, the new childrens’ nursery in the old sorting office – Shapes. I did notice that one of the signs erected to celebrate the opening was broken and the first two letters were missing – rather funny. Our colleagues have been busy too. Firstly, Banstead Village in Bloom (BViB) won a gold award in the summer – well done to them and to everybody who helped them. Secondly, the Royal British Legion put on a great display of poppies along the high street and surrounding roads and a great parade in aid of those who fought in the war. And Thirdly, Banstead Business Guild

launched the Christmas Community Event which was a great success and not as cold as in previous years. Please see the pictures below. We are very fortunate in this village to have so many groups putting on activities. These activities range from Musical Theatre (the recent Scrooge musical), Arts, Choir, Dance, Horticultural, History, Organ and Pantomime to mention just a few... We try to present all of these though the ‘What’s On’ page on our website – please have a look. One of the things not to change was the old Priory School. McCarthy and Stone had submitted proposals for the redevelopment of this site into a retirement home, but the plans were rejected by Reigate and Banstead Borough Council. Some of you may have been sent a development update from McCarthy & Stone regarding the development seeking your views and support. A revised application has been submitted and is under review. We aim to represent the whole village, but of course, it’s much easier if you are a member. For more details please checkout our website (www.banstead-bvra.org) and our newssheet - if you are not already a member of our organisation please join us (subscription just £3.00 per year). Our email address is Banstead-BVRA@outlook.com, we would love to hear from you. David Talbot, Chairman, BVRA www.banstead-bvra.org Please mention B E A C O N when responding to adverts
BVRA represents primarily Banstead Village with a membership of around half the population. It is one of the largest residents’ associations in the borough. Executive meetings are held monthly (except December) on the last Tuesday of the month. In addition, there are smaller sub groups that meet regularly to discuss Planning issues, Local Highways and Infrastructure, Village centre management and Internal Affairs. The annual subscription is £3 per year per household, which includes the cost of producing three editions of our Newssheets, support costs and our other activities.

am sure that you are all aware by now that Banstead Village in Bloom achieved a gold award in this – our third year of entering the prestigious RHS competition. Because of our size we are categorised as a ‘small town’ in an area that stretches from Bournemouth in the west, Tunbridge Wells to the east and Hayling Island to the south, which being tourist areas would have benefitted from a certain amount of public funding. As you know we are completely self funding, relying on generous donations and fund raising initiatives, with all the work being carried out by dedicated volunteers, and we know that this made all the difference to our overall total. We are so grateful to all of you who contributed in so many different ways and we know from all the feedback that we have received that our efforts have made a huge difference to the

High Street in particular and also to the general ambience and safety of our village. The regular Monday litter picking group spearheaded by Kerry recently discovered both an air rifle in Croydon Lane and a shotgun close to the prison which is less than a mile away, and last year two large kitchen knives were discovered in undergrowth at the back of the churchyard, right in the heart of our Village. In late October we held our annual Quiz Night which attracted the support of 171 people including our local MP Crispin Blunt, seen here above in front of All Saints Church, when he came to congratulate us upon our achievements. A hugely enjoyable evening contributed to over £2,100 being raised which will help to finance the lasting projects we wish to achieve. Congratulations to Paul Bonner from Garrard Road and his

team ‘Peeky Blinders’ who scooped the top prize of 6 bottles of Prosecco donated by Specsavers of Banstead, one of our most generous and committed supporters. In addition they have given us £1,000 which we intend to use to plant up a sensory garden in the Lady Neville Park. We are hopeful that we shall see much greater attention given by the Council to this very popular park next year, following our representations to Reigate & Banstead Council in the autumn. Waitrose also gave us a cheque for £1,000 which is to go towards funding some new planters to brighten up the ‘unloved’ areas still to be found on the High Street. We hope that you have noticed all the work carried out on the previously rather tired beds in front of their store by the Friday team, and in the spring the entrance to the High Street via Sutton Lane will, we hope, be brightened considerably by the planting of 2,000 narcissi bulbs in the grass verge there in late November. In recognition of all our achievements and a demonstration of their faith in our ability to deliver, Banstead Village in Bloom (BViB) was absolutely thrilled to be awarded £12,000 from the Community Infrastructure Levy(CIL) Fund by Reigate and Banstead Borough Council in late November. They care about you and are invested in your community. Unique Products - A national chain will sell hundreds or thousands of identikit products. Local stores sell unique merchandise in smaller numbers so you will buy something truly individual. It supports the arts - Small local businesses support creativity! Look for art on display created by local artists. These are one-of-a-kind pieces you won't find anywhere else. It helps the local economy - The money you spend in a local business stays within

Buy a gift or a gift card at a local business in your area and give to a friend, family member, or co-worker. This will introduce the company to someone new and allow for the “shop local” mantra to spread. Promote their business! ALL SAINTS’ CHURCH BELLS

ur oldest bell has been ringing out over Banstead since 1585, so Shakespeare could have heard it if he happened to have come this way. We have eight bells, all of which were recast in 1921, i.e. the metal melted and poured into moulds bearing the inscriptions shown on the original bells (see opposite page). Full circle ringing originated in the British Isles and has spread to Australia,

New Zealand, South Africa, USA and Canada. For this method of ringing each bell is fixed to a very large vertical wheel in such a way that its mouth is at the edge and its top is at the centre of the wheel. Before ringing can begin the bellringer ‘raises’ the bell: he/she swings the wheel with the bell attached backwards and forwards by means of the bell-rope, in increasing arcs until the bell is ‘up’,

Each time it is rung the wheel makes a complete circle first in one direction and then in the other, taking the bell with it. The bellringer’s art is to control the timing of the ring - no mean feat when one considers the weight of the bell compared with that of some of the ringers! For funerals the bells are sometimes ‘half-muffled’ - the Steeple-keeper climbs into the Tower and puts a leather pad on to each clapper, covering one side of it only. When that side hits the bell the sound is muffled, while for alternate strikes the sound is normal, ringing loud and soft like an echo. Would you like to learn bell-ringing? SINGLE USE PLASTIC RECYCLING TerraCycle is a single use plastic recycling scheme set up by Catherine Banks to remove certain types of plastic from landfill while also raising money for The Alzheimer Society.

atherine Banks has set up Tadworth Terracycle, a single use plastic recycling scheme which removes certain types of plastic from landfill, that cannot be recycled with Reigate and Banstead refuse collections. The plastic is shredded in the UK and sold for re purposing into long term plastic items, so its not only saved from landfill but also kept in the UK for which points are received and redeemed to donate money to charities. The main charity beneficiaries are currently The Alzheimer Society and the RSPCA. Most importantly, the whole organisation is run on a voluntary basis. Catherine Banks said: "TerraCycle offers a range of free programmes that are funded by conscientious companies...to help you collect and recycle your hard-to-recycle waste. There is also a Facebook page called ‘Tadworth & Local Area Recycling Page’ so please like and follow this.” She continued, “All this work is done on a voluntary basis, I receive no monetary gain

myself, however, I do receive points, which can be turned into a donation for my nominated charities. I also provide feedback on the amount we have kept out of landfill and the amount raised so far.” Facebook provides much of the information required to allow anyone to recycle acceptable waste. Albums provide the schemes, how to sort, package, where and when a drop off can be made, they also provide photos of acceptable and unacceptable waste for each scheme to guide you. There are very specific rules to this recycling, so please refer to these albums and if in query, please post an enquiry or send Catherine a private message. If you do not have Facebook, please email her at TadworthTerracycle@gmail.com and Catherine can give you access to her google drive where all the necessary information can be found. TWO NEW INITIATIVES
I
would like to tell you about two new initiatives that All Saints are running in parentship with The Mary Francis Trust and Princess Alice Hospice. The first is a book club that all three of us are involved in. They will be monthly on the first Tuesday of the month, the first one is at 6pm on 7th January 2020 in the Banstead Youth Centre. We are all working together to support our communities across the three organisations, helping them to meet new people, building their confidence and maintaining and improving their physical and mental wellbeing. Reading helps us to gain new perspectives, boosts teamwork skills and much more. Refreshments will be provided. If you are interest you can either register your interest now by calling, texting or emailing the following contacts: Mary Frances Trust, Email: info@maryfrancestrust.org.uk, Tel: 01372 375 400, Text: 07929 024 722 Princess Alice Hospice 01372 461958 or info@compassionatecommunities@pah.org.uk All Saints Church Rev’d Ian Whitley 07961382293 or ian.bansteadcurate@outlook.com The second, which isn’t actually new but is our first death café for 2020. On Tuesday 18th February 2020 at 1.30pm in The Banstead Centre, The Horseshoe, Bolters Lane, Banstead SM7 2BQ. All Saints Church Banstead and The Princess Alice Hospice are hosting a Death Café. We are committed to nurturing Compassionate Communities and that includes facilitating events to discuss grief and loss. You might not think a chat about death over coffee and cake is your cup of tea. Here are some of the comments from the last one we ran. “Met some very nice people and touched

the surface of some very deep questions.” “Hope you will do more” “Excellent thank you – it is good to talk freely bout death” Death remains a taboo subject for many people to talk about openly. In our Death Cafes we bring people together in an informal environment, with no agenda or themes, just a simple, group-directed discussion. By doing this we aim to empower communities with the knowledge, skills, confidence and support to engage with death, dying and loss. Join us for great coffee and cake (first one’s are on us) and chat. If you are interest in joining us for The Death Café, please contact: Princess Alice Hospice 01372 461958 or info@compassionatecommunities@pah.org.uk All Saints Church Rev’d Ian Whitley on 07961382293 or ian.bansteadcurate@outlook.com Ian Whitley, Reverend, All Saints Church

WOODMANSTERNE EVENING W!
MADAGASCAR HATS AND BAGS
A
lthough it was a wet, cold, dark evening for their October meeting, President Lesley Earl was pleased to welcome a surprising amount of members who ventured out despite the terrible weather. Lesley gave a synopsis of the business before introducing Jane Muddle from Madajazz, who had brought an amazing selection of hats and bags made of raffia which were all hand made in Madagascar. Jane gave an enlightening talk and explained that Madagascar is off the south-east coast of Africa and is a truly unique and enchanting place but also an island facing many challenges and terrible poverty but is well worth visiting, although you do need a guide with an off-road vehicle as some places are very difficult to get to. To find out more about Madadajzz you can visit their website at: www.madajazz.co.uk.

JANUARY 2020
A few days after the meeting Carole Evans organised a coach trip to the Brick Lane Music Hall, who were putting on a ‘Murder Mystery’ with a delicious three course lunch before the performance. The afternoon was very entertaining, with a lot of humour, singing, dancing and of course a ‘murder’ to solve. At the September meeting Tony Harris was welcomed as the special guest speaker as his alter-ego King Henry VIII. Fully attired in replica costume of the period (his stature adding to the character) and full of interesting facts (with perhaps a little added fiction) about Tudor times and the succession and scandals including stories about each of his ‘wives’ and how they “died”– he was very funny too and had a good interaction with his ‘subject’ audience. CRIMESTOPPERS
F
or those of you not familiar with Crimestoppers, it is a service run independently from the police that enables individuals to provide information relating to crime with an absolute guarantee that their anonymity will be preserved. Reports can be made via telephone, internet or post. Care is taken so that reports made by telephone or internet cannot be traced as they are re-routed before they are taken by Crimestoppers’ volunteer operators. In those instances where a reward is involved, e.g. for reports that lead to an arrest, arrangements are made whereby the reward can be collected from a bank by an individual presenting password style information rather than the normal bank demand for proof of identity. Reports that are eventually passed to the police are checked so that any inadvertently included clues to the reporter’s identity are removed. For example in a report saying “my neighbour at xyz address is dealing drugs”, the words “my neighbour” would be removed. In the 12 months leading up to April of this year in Surrey, reports made to Crimestoppers have resulted in over 80 individuals being arrested and charged and over £60,000 of stolen property being recovered. Crimestoppers has a “youth service” project, called Fearless, to help children aged between 11 and 16 years. You may be wondering whether children of this age are often in a position to provide information that might be of value to the police. Sadly children can themselves be victims of crimes such as sexual exploitation, but, more recently drug dealers, are making children into accomplices for their crimes. This type of activity is known as “County Lines” crime, as it frequently takes place across county boundaries with criminal gangs in big

cities spreading their tentacles into towns and rural areas. Children are typically exploited in the role of couriers to move illegal substances into and around an area as the criminals are aware that police powers are more constrained when minors are involved. Children may often have been tricked or coerced to undertake illegal activity and then feel themselves trapped. The Fearless project makes them aware of the opportunity to alert the authorities to the activities of their oppressors whilst their own role in doing this is not revealed. The Fearless project team in Surrey has been visiting schools and setting up their display stand at events and places such as the Tadworth Leisure Centre frequented by children and families. Advice can be given to parents and grandparents of signs to look for in case they are concerned about sudden changes from a child’s normal activities or if they have unexplained additional cash. If you would like to become a volunteer helper or invite the Fearless project team to an event or a school, you can contact them via the Crimestoppers web pages but if you want to use the anonymous reporting service dial 0800 555 111.
