CRANACHAN
Preparation time: 15 minutes Serves: 4 INGREDIENTS 75g pinhead oatmeal (you can use rolled oats, but the steel cut pinhead variety are nuttier and less porridge-like) 1 tbsp soft brown sugar 250g raspberries 500ml double cream 4 tbsp honey, plus a little extra to drizzle 4 tbsp good Scottish whisky

eat a large frying pan over a medium heat. Add the oatmeal and the sugar then toast, stirring continuously until the sugar has melted and the oatmeal smells sweet and nutty. Pour on to a baking sheet lined with greaseproof paper and leave to cool. Meanwhile, puree 175g of the raspberries until smooth (reserve the best-looking ones). You can leave the seeds or pass through a sieve for a smooth puree. Whip the cream to fairly stiff peaks, then fold in the honey and whisky. Add three quarters of the oatmeal and all the puree to the cream then swirl through to give a ripple effect. Spoon into four glass dishes and top with the

To be eligible children and young people need to have an Education Health Care Plan (EHCP) or receive Disability Living Allowance/Personal Independence Payment (DLA/PIP). Compass Card holders can then access free swimming and hundreds of discounts on things like bowling, soft play, theatre trips, eating out, farms plus many more fun things to do. new programme has been launched across the Coast to Capital Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) region to support both unemployed and economically inactive local people progress to job search readiness or move into paid employment. The Making a Difference Programme is a three-year European Social Fund match funded programme delivering support to people living in the Coast to Capital region, which includes East Surrey, Sussex, and Croydon. The programme, which will be delivered by Education Development Trust, has seen the first participants join. Each participant in the programme will receive support from their Making a Difference Employment Coach at

There are many different activities designed specifically to benefit the participant, from workshops covering CV’s and interview skills, through to taster days with local employers. In addition, there will be regular employment events, such as jobs fairs and roadshows showcasing different sectors, run across the region and open to all. VIRTUAL RIDE TO PARIS FOR HOSPICE
S
usan and Steve Wright (right) recently completed a virtual cycle ride from Merstham to Paris in memory of Susan’s Mum, Janet who was cared for St Catherine’s Hospice. Here, Susan shares how the hospice supported her Mum, and why she and her husband took on such an innovative fundraiser to raise funds. “My Mum, Janet, was under the care of St Catherine’s for 10 weeks last summer after she was diagnosed with cancer at the end of May 2019. It was sudden, quick and aggressive and she passed away in mid-September. When Mum first found out she was unwell she wanted to go the hospice A bed wasn’t available so she was looked after at home. Nurses came in morning and evening. It was a blessing knowing that Mum was being looked after and somebody was giving her care as I’m so not a nurse! Mum would often call on me though as it was difficult for her to keep up with the medicine she was on. I remember she rang me in a panic once, and I had to drive over to her house, as she’d lost her tablets and couldn’t remember if she’d taken them. She hadn’t as they were no longer required, so had been taken away to avoid confusion. Even though we drew a chart for her with details of what tablet to take when, by midAugust, it wasn’t easy for any of us to keep Mum’s medicine under control. It was changing daily, so the hospice suggested a stay at St Catherine’s to help her stabilise. When Mum was at St Catherine’s, she looked and felt better. All the stress of worrying about her medication was taken out of our hands. It had been a challenge to keep on top of it, but that worry was lifted from Mum’s and our shoulders. The level of care at the hospice was above and

beyond Mum was happy there and we all knew she’d be given her medication when she needed it. It made us feel better knowing she was being looked after. Knowing she was being so well cared for at the hospice meant I could leave her in the evenings and sleep through the night. We’d been planning to take Mum on a family trip to Paris for her 75th birthday Unfortunately, due to her illness, we never got there, but during lockdown, my husband, Steve and I looked at what we could do to raise money for St Catherine’s. We decided to cycle 287 miles virtually from Mum’s home in Merstham to Paris in her memory. As non-cyclists we decided to do the challenge across 10 weeks, the same length of time Mum was under the hospice’s care. It meant we had to ride an average of five miles every day. There were a few days I got up at 5.30am to fit my

cycle in before work and to make sure I kept up with the miles. When you’re doing something for a purpose, there’s an added incentive, so you don’t mind things like getting up early. I actually quite enjoyed it! We finished our cycle a day earlier than planned and completed it on the same day as the Tour De France’s final day which was fun. We took a selfie as we crossed the finish line and Steve joked people had come out with banners for us! We wore our St Catherine’s T-shirts and wristbands, and when we arrived in ‘Paris’ we celebrated by sitting in the garden and having a glass of fizz! It's the first challenge like this I’ve ever done. Although some people would have done it in a much quicker time, it was a genuine challenge for Steve and I. He has dodgy knees and neither of us cycle. We set a target to raise £574 for the hospice as this was the equivalent of the mileage of both of
us from Mum’s house to Paris. We didn’t take the shortest route either as we chose the same route we would have driven Mum to Paris on, down the M25, M20 and through the Eurotunnel. We updated our JustGiving page when we reached milestones and it was brilliant to see donations pour in. In the end we raised £700. We know how important that funding is from our experience when Mum couldn’t get a bed when she first needed one, so we’re really pleased. If Mum knew about our challenge, she’d had probably said what on earth are you doing? I WAS DELIGHTED TO COME BACK Helen Pointer is part of a crucial team of volunteers at St Catherine’s Hospice, who have been doing visitor screening checks so patients on the ward can still safely see their essential visitors at a time it matters most. Here, Helen (pictured below) shares more about her experience volunteering with the local charity.
I
’ve been volunteering doing visitor temperature checks and screening at the hospice on Wednesday afternoons. I welcome each visitor and invite them to wash their hands before proceeding with a temperature check and asking a series of questions regarding their health, COVID-19 symptoms, contact with anyone isolating, or a journey from an area in lockdown. If all the above is clear and negative I provide them with Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and guide them towards the room for their loved one. After months away, it’s been so good to come back to the hospice and connect with St Catherine’s and everyone here. In this role, there’s a vital support from the hospice receptionists, and they’ve been absolutely brilliant. They’ve given all the screening volunteers valued guidance and help through ongoing changes. They’re constantly busy, but always find the time to support us. The Catering Team at the hospice have really looked after us too, offering us cups of tea and cake even though we’re sat separately to others. I really missed the camaraderie of being around people during the first lockdown, and it was palpable coming back to volunteer at the hospice after spending so much time on my own in isolation. Earlier this year I was very poorly with coronavirus myself. I had it at the same time as Boris and the Prince of Wales! But I coped far better than I ever would have imagined. The isolation I experienced increased my awareness and the importance of human connection. I’m used to interacting with hospice patients

from my time in my normal volunteer role, preCOVID, as an artist drawing “bucket list” caricature portraits. I can’t do them in the usual way at the moment because of COVID-19 but I’m still doing them for patients and relatives via Zoom. I even do some drawings in between visitors. In the past I’ve been fortunate to sit with many patients at St Catherine’s and draw them and their families. It’s a real joy. Now, I’m drawing caricature portraits with patients where we write a list of all the things they have achieved during their lifetime and draw that in – almost like a reverse bucket list. It’s a privilege to be part of this crucial time for the visitors to St Catherine’s and instead of meeting just patients as I did before, I’m meeting their families now. During the time people are visiting the hospice, I develop quite a connection with them, and the families and visitors I meet are so inspiring. They all have an incredible outlook. the most and offer virtual hugs through words and body language is fulfilling. Visitors talk to us as we screen them, and we’re always there to listen. I treasure this time as a rapport develops over the weeks, and it’s all about judging what I can offer someone in the present climate. There’s been a young man staying at the hospice recently and his wife and young children often visit. I heard one of the young children ask their Mum, ‘Will Daddy wake up?’ It’s so difficult, but I do whatever I can to make things easier. I drew a happy, little face on one of the masks for the child. I always try to make the screening process as easy as I can for people. We have a chat about the crazy world we’re in at the moment, and how they’re coping. I demonstrate the PPE gently as first-time visitors can be distracted, emotional and overwhelmed by something new and invasive.
If someone isn’t sure what glove size to take, I always advise them to take the bigger gloves, and I suggest people put hand cream on before they put their gloves on next time. Your hands then feel lovely when you peel the gloves off! It’s about dealing with things realistically and helping people to understand the changes. We get a lot of questions, but everyone appreciates what we’re doing to keep them safe. I find not being able to hug people difficult though, especially when they’re upset. It’s difficult that I have to stand back, instead of comfort, but I can still listen to people and empathise. People always rally and find the strength to pull themselves together and go back into the wards to the person they love. MORE CARE WORKERS ARE NEEDED
A
s winter approaches, the care sector in West Sussex will be under increased pressure especially this year with the additional challenges of the coronavirus pandemic. More care workers are needed across the care sector to keep elderly and vulnerable people safe and well. West Sussex County Council’s Adult Social Care’s Winter Plan sets out how West Sussex residents will be supported throughout the winter months. A key element of the plan is to make sure there are enough care workers to support those living in residential care homes and care for people in their own homes. In West Sussex there are currently an estimated 25,000 people working in adult social care, but many more are needed.

F
lood damage has prompted the need for traffic light refurbishment work at the Gatwick Road/Beehive Ring Road junction in Crawley. Periodic, localised flooding of the neighbouring watercourse has damaged the existing equipment. The controller will now be relocated and a full upgrade of the traffic signals’ heads and push buttons will also be carried out. THE PERFECT LOCKDOWN EXERCISE
D
uring the first lockdown I rather enjoyed the enforced laziness. I am a gym member, but I don’t really love it. After a while though I noticed that while I didn’t miss weights and running on the treadmill, I did miss the classes, and the rush of endorphins that followed. Then one day while idly flicking through YouTube videos I came across a ‘hula-fitness’ workout. It looked fun. I grabbed one of my daughter’s neon hula hoops and had a go. Much harder than it looked but I enjoyed it. The next afternoon I had another go and my teenage daughter joined in. We laughed a lot (which was a bonus as anyone who has a teenage daughter will acknowledge) and afterwards we investigated hula-fitness a bit more. Hula hooping is inexpensive, and you can do it practically anywhere, which was kind of the point back in lockdown. All you need to get started is a hoop and room to move. Standard hula hoops are cheap as chips but after a few sessions we invested in weighted ones. Even they didn’t break the bank. Ours cost about £15 each but even the more expensive ones were only £40. It is important to find the right-sized hoop. Larger hoops are a little easier as a beginner because you spin more slowly. If using a weighted hoop, begin with a lighter one (around 0.5-1Kg) and increase the weight as you get more proficient. Correct form is more important than weight, and I did have a little accident where I pulled a muscle in my back for a few days because in my enthusiasm the first hoop I bought was too heavy. There are a few online tutorials that talk you through how to hula hoop with proper form. To my delight I found our gym offered a beginner’s online hula fitness class, so we signed up for that.

With hula hooping, you teach your body how to move the right way with the hoop while working your cardiovascular system. Shorter workouts are better at the start. We started with two ten-minute sessions a day and worked up from there. BASIC FORM AND POSTURE Feet should be a little more than shoulderwidth apart, with one foot slightly in front of the other. Your back should be straight, and your core engaged to protect your back. Hold each side of the hoop around your waist, resting against your back. With the hoop against your back, start spinning the hoop in whichever direction you find easiest. As the hoop starts to spin, move your waist in a circular motion to keep the hoop moving. Push your hips slightly forward as the hoop moves across your stomach and push back when the hoop moves across your back. KEEP THE CORE MUSCLES ENGAGED – TUMMY TIGHT. If the hoop drops just pick it up and get going again. Finally - If you have a back injury or chronic back pain, check with your doctor or physical therapist before trying hula hooping to make sure it’s safe for you.
