EAGLE COMMENT
GREAT BOROUGH SPORT he excellent summer weather we have been having has been good for sport and in this issue you can read all about the Specsavers Surrey Youth Games on page 18. This year Epsom & Ewell were well represented with a squad of 168 young people taking part in the Games at the weekend hosted at two venues this year, Surrey Sports Park in Guildford and Woking Leisure Centre. Specsavers Surrey Youth Games is a great opportunity for young people to try a new sport, or to improve their skills by taking part in high quality free coaching sessions. It is a great weekend for everyone and the young people really enjoy themselves, make new friends and get to try a sport that they may not have had a go at before.
T
There is also the exciting prospect of a new sports facility in the Borough at Old School’s Lane. On page 20 you can read about Epsom Sports Club’s announcement that phase 1 of building their new sports facility at Old School’s Lane, Ewell has begun. Contractors have started laying the foundations for an all weather pitch, grass pitch, cricket pitch and outfield space for football, lacrosse, rugby and junior activities, which will provide a lasting sporting legacy for the whole of Epsom and Ewell. So with all the obesity fears Epsom & Ewell is ahead of the game in providing opportunities for young and old to try new sports and enjoy keeping fit. THE HEAT IS ON

H
ow hot is it? Delightful, glorious yet could we have a little rain please? Just some at night maybe. Our lovely gardens, allotments, street and park trees are likely all struggling in the heat as I know I am in the afternoon. Street Trees Street trees in Epsom & Ewell could certainly do with our help, especially the young/new ones. Working with Epsom & Ewell Tree Advisory Board (EETAB) leaflets have been created and printed by Brigid Ryan (Thank you!) which are being distributed around the borough to houses that have a young street tree close to them. Can we all have a look around at the trees close to us and maybe provide a watering can or two once or twice a week? It won’t be long until the rain reappears. Please bear in mind that currently once that street tree has died it will not be replaced by Epsom & Ewell Borough Council or Surrey County Council!

Epsom Downs race course.
Epsom Downs race course My photography continues unbounded with numerous trips to the gallops to capture the various training yards working out their horses. The weather is again impacting this area with most getting out early to try and miss the heat of the sun. While waiting for horses to appear I have been taking pictures of other things on the Downs such as this lovely busy bee. The race course still has a good line up of events throughout summer, it’s not just the Derby. I went up to the course on Thursday 12th July for the 70s night which had racing from 6pm until 8:45pm and then a 70’s music evening. Fancy dress was the order of the day along with some excellent racing. I managed to photograph a rather unexpected visitor to the Downs while waiting for a race to start. Buzzing away across the far side of the course was a beautiful Spitfire. Such a lovely, distinctive sound they make!
WOODCOTE EPSOM RESIDENTS SOCIETY Come along to the Trainers open day on Bank Holiday Monday 27th August. The trainer’s yards will be open in the morning with racing going on later in the afternoon. A great family day out with lots to see and learn about the racing industry on our doorstep. In my last article, you may recall I talked about the Magnolia Cup to run at Goodwood on the 2nd August. All in the aid of charity so certainly a worthy event to see and support if you can. Taking pictures on the gallops one Friday morning I came across Abigail Groves riding out with Laura Mongan’s string of horses. Abigail will be riding in the Champions Willbery Charity Derby on Monday 27th August and is all in the aid of some great charities. NEW MAYOR OF EPSOM & EWELL ouncillor Neil Dallen was officially recognised as the new Mayor of Epsom & Ewell for 2018-19 at the Council's annual Mayor making ceremony at the Town Hall on Tuesday 15 May. Speaking at the Annual Council meeting, Neil said, “I am deeply honoured to have been chosen as your Mayor and I am looking forward to meeting many of you as I travel round the borough fulfilling my mayoral duties. “My theme is hope and I aim to give hope to many youth and disadvantaged individuals and organisations in the borough during my mayoral year. I hope you will be able to come along and join me at my various fundraising events to help raise much needed funds for my chosen charities." For his mayoral year, Neil has selected three local organisations to help as his chosen charities: • Girl Guiding UK (Epsom Division), specifically for projects in the borough to improve facilities for both Guides and other youth activities, including Duke of Edinburgh expeditions. • Epsom and Ewell Talking Newspapers based at Swail House, Epsom providing a ‘lifeline’ service to those blind or partially sighted. • Work Stress Solutions who support a wide range of disadvantaged people, young and old, by improving

their self-esteem, providing training and offering employment opportunities both within and outside their organisation. Neil first got heavily involved in local politics when he joined the Town Ward Residents Association in the early 1990s, becoming chairman in 1998. Neil stood as candidate in the 1999 elections and on the fourth attempt in 2007 became a Councillor, with a majority of just two! He has served on most borough council and joint Surrey County Council committees and working groups. From 2011 to 2016 he was chair of Strategy and Resources committee. Neil was proposed by Councillor Clive Woodbridge (Residents Association) and seconded by Councillor Alex Clarke (Conservative). A resident of the borough for over 50 years, Neil was born in Bournemouth and spent his formative years growing up in a council estate in Hayes, Middlesex (North London). The family moved to Epsom when Neil was 13. Neil joined the scouts and was a student at Glyn School in Ewell, where, he says, chess was probably more important to him than his studies! Leaving school at 18, Neil’s first full time job was at WH Smith in Epsom. After a year he switched his career path to become a trainee computer programmer, in the days when computers were large and the industry young. Working for various
different companies, he gradually progressed into senior management. His varied career included giving a four week intensive software course in Iraq and lecturing at a local prison. Neil has been made redundant twice. This led, in 1993, to him starting up his own computer services consultancy and project management business. One of the highpoints of the business was the contract to provide hardware, software and networks to the whole of the MoD. Neil retired in 2017. Neil married Ann in 1983 and the couple have six grown up children and four grandsons. Scouting has been a large part of his life and many highlights include running a group of 250 plus Scouts, taking groups to Sweden and Uganda, leading a contingent at the 21st World
Jamboree, producing local gang shows at the Epsom Playhouse, overseeing Epsom Fireworks display and the Community Christmas Post scheme. In 2017, after over 50 years of Scouting, he decided to take a break. The Mayor is the first citizen of the Borough of Epsom & Ewell and has several specific roles during their one-year term of office. These include representing the Council and the local community at formal and ceremonial occasions, both within the borough and elsewhere, and chairing full meetings of the Council. Councillor John Beckett was elected as the Deputy Mayor. For information on all the mayor's charities fundraising events visit www.mayorscharitiesepsom.org.uk

LOCAL LEGAL ADVICE
MARRIAGE VS COHABITATION U N D E R S TA N D I N G Y O U R L E G A L R I G H T S arriage is not for everyone and although there have been changes in the law allowing same sex couples to marry, many couples still regard it as oldfashioned and believe they have no requirement for “a piece of paper” to confirm their commitment to each other. However, the common law husband or wife is a myth and often, it is only when a relationship breaks down that unmarried partners or cohabitees discover that the law treats them very differently to married couples. When looking at how to distribute a family’s assets on divorce, a spouse can call upon the matrimonial law to look at all relevant circumstances of the relationship both during and after the marriage. The goal is to seek a result that is fair to both spouses with the welfare of the children being treated as a primary consideration. The future living arrangements of all involved will be a concern as will the financial position of each spouse following the divorce. The situation for a cohabitee is very different and the fact that a relationship existed is irrelevant. Frequently, the only issue to resolve in a breakdown of a cohabiting relationship is what happens to the home. Unless stated otherwise, former cohabitants will be left relying on the principles of property law alone to divide up their home and property and this can
M

be harsh, even though there may be children to re-house. In the absence of a written agreement, contributions (financial or otherwise) can be considered but the end result could be very different to each party’s expectations and the element of fairness is non-existent. Furthermore, a former cohabitee cannot claim maintenance for themselves, even as a full- time carer for the children. It is also worth noting that as a spouse, you have an automatic right of inheritance if a partner dies without leaving a will. As cohabitees, there is no such presumption and you may be left having to make a claim against a loved one’s estate if you were financially reliant upon them. Illness can also be a concern. Unlike a spouse, as a cohabitee, you have no legal right to make care decisions for the other and close relatives may be called upon to do so. A Lasting Power of Attorney appointing your partner to make decisions could avoid this. Find out your rights. Councillor Barry Nash, Chairman of Epsom & Ewell Borough Council’s Community and Wellbeing Committee said, “Congratulations Team Epsom & Ewell! It has been another fantastic year and a great all round result. Well done! “The team comradery was particularly inspiring across all events and age groups and highlights the importance of sport in the local community. Thank you to all the 383 young people who registered to take part in the trial and taster sessions and to all our local clubs and coaches who provided the training sessions.” The free training sessions for all sports were run by qualified coaches and the majority have direct links with local clubs' junior sections, offering youngsters who took part, a chance to get involved with a club on a more longterm basis. The Specsavers Surrey Youth Games is a great opportunity for young people
to try a new sport, or to improve their skills by taking part in high quality free coaching sessions. It is a great weekend for everyone and the young people really enjoy themselves, make new friends and get to try a sport that they may not have had a go at before. LOOKING FOR A NEW BATHROOM? ou’d think buying a new bathroom would be simple; but you’d be amazed at all the things you have to consider even before you get to colours, shapes and sizes. For starters, what water supply do you have? Conventional gravity system, a 'combi' boiler or a pressurised system? Do you want a bath or a shower or both? If it’s to be a shower, are you going the traditional route with a tray and enclosure arrangement or the increasingly popular wet room option? Is accessibility an issue? If so, you might want to think about comfort height WCs or a rectangular, walk-in shower that offers more space than a cor ner cubicle and can accommodate a seat too. And that's just the beginning! Bathroom and cloakroom fur niture can be stand alone or built-in units. Shower controls can be manual, thermostatic, digital or electric and water delivery options can be through single, double and triple outputs – you can even fill your bath via the waste overflow filler, without taps at all. Then there are the walls and floors. For most people, ceramic tiles come to mind first. After all, they’ve been around since 4,000 BC and have been synonymous with bathrooms – luxury or

otherwise – pretty much since the Victorian era. But now there's an alter native that's just as practical, hygienic and can be installed in less than a quarter of the time it takes to tile the room. Waterproof wall panelling comes in colours, textures and finishes to suit all tastes, budgets and room layouts. It’s guaranteed and enables you to create a bathroom that's just that little bit different. Finally, if you're looking to finish things off with a floor covering that's warmer than ceramic tiles,

Of course, if you do decide to tile the floor you could consider underfloor heating rather than more conventional radiators and towel rails. Again, your options are many and varied, with styles ranging from plain to exotic. Stoneleigh Plumbing Supplies can help you with all these decisions. Essentially, we’re here to help home owners, plumbers, bathroom fitters and general DIY-ers meet all their plumbing needs. We spend time with our customers, offering professional advice to help them decide exactly what’s right for them. We’ve everything for complete
