SUPPORT FOR LOCAL JOB SEEKERS

A

new programme has been launched across the Coast to Capital Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) region to support both unemployed and economically inactive local people progress to job search readiness or move into paid employment.

The Making a Difference Programme is a three-year European Social Fund match funded programme delivering support to people living in the Coast to Capital region, which includes East Surrey, Sussex, and Croydon.

The programme, which will be delivered by Education Development Trust, has seen the first participants join. Each participant in the programme will receive support from their Making a Difference Employment Coach at

regular intervals for up to four months, with the frequency of the intervention and the type of activities undertaken to be determined by agreement with their Employment Coach, tailored to their individual needs.

There are many different activities designed specifically to benefit the participant, from workshops covering CV’s and interview skills, through to taster days with local employers.

In addition, there will be regular employment events, such as jobs fairs and roadshows showcasing different sectors, run across the region and open to all.

Participants interested in joining the programme can be referred via their JCP Work Coach, or through direct contact with the Making a Difference team by calling 01329 559177. The first appointment will be held with a National Careers Service Adviser who will be able to explain the benefits of the programme and book the induction appointment at a time to suit the participant.

LEISURE DISCOUNT CARD FOR SEND The Compass Card: fun, free, discounted leisure, helping to shape future provision for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities.

H

ave you heard of the Compass Card scheme? It’s the leisure discount scheme for children and young people, from birth to 25 years with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), either living or going to school in West Sussex. The scheme provides some fantastic discounts on all things leisure related across West Sussex, Brighton & Hove and the surrounding areas, making fun and leisure more accessible.

To be eligible children and young people need to have an Education Health Care Plan (EHCP) or receive Disability Living Allowance/Personal Independence Payment (DLA/PIP). Compass Card holders can then access free swimming and hundreds of discounts on things like bowling, soft play, theatre trips, eating out, farms plus many more fun things to do.

As well as receiving a Compass Card, children and young people registered will go on the ‘Compass’, which is the Disability Register for West Sussex held by Amaze, an independent charity in Brighton. Coming through the pandemic has left local authorities, and other organisations, with extremely difficult budget decisions to make.

The Disability Register informs the Local Authority and helps to shape future provision.

All data is held by Amaze and kept secure and confidential. We need to ensure SEND communities in West Sussex are fully represented and have a voice, so we need children and young people signed up to the Compass Card – not only to access some fantastic discounts and benefits, but to also provide the SEND voice in the community.

MORE CARE WORKERS ARE NEEDED s winter approaches, the care sector in West Sussex will be under increased pressure especially this year with the additional challenges of the coronavirus pandemic.

More care workers are needed across the care sector to keep elderly and vulnerable people safe and well.

West Sussex County Council’s Adult Social Care’s Winter Plan sets out how West Sussex residents will be supported throughout the winter months. A key element of the plan is to make sure there are enough care workers to support those living in residential care homes and care for people in their own homes.

In West Sussex there are currently an estimated 25,000 people working in adult social care, but many more are needed.

The Proud to Care website advertises hundreds of vacancies and contains information, guidance and case studies of others who now work in care.

Amanda Jupp, Cabinet Member for Adults and Health, said: “Working in care is so rewarding and offers long term career opportunities for anyone motivated by helping and improving the lives of others. Christmas will be a difficult time for many people this year, so providing care to people that cannot be with their loved ones is, more than ever, vitally important.

“Many ideal care workers come from many different backgrounds including retail, hospitality and customer services as they have the transferable people skills needed to be good carers. As we continue to be under restrictions to day to day life a number of people in these industries are facing redundancy so care work offers a great new opportunity.”

Former shop manager Lesley now works as a Care Assistant in the Chichester area.

She said: “Not only do I feel like I’m giving something back but the people I care for give so much to me too. I feel so valued and appreciated, I wouldn’t go back to working in retail now. To be a good carer you need to be friendly, versatile, quick thinking and enjoy conversation.”

MASTERPLAN PUBLISHED

A

six-week public consultation has been undertaken to give Haywards Heath residents the opportunity to shape how the Town Centre might look in the future and give their views about future community facilities.

Mid Sussex District Council has prepared a draft Masterplan for Haywards Heath that sets out a framework to encourage economic recovery, aimed at evolving the town centre into a vibrant location that meets the current and future needs of the community. The Council was keen to hear the views of local people on the draft Masterplan and residents were invited to provide their comments by 21 December.

The Masterplan sets out a vision for the future of Haywards Heath; it provides a framework to encourage inward investment, economic recovery and growth by attracting people to live, work and visit.

The guiding vision and objectives of the Masterplan are: • Attracting people to visit, work and live in the Town Centre • Retaining and strengthening distinct character areas • Providing opportunities for sustainable travel and improving public realm • Exploring and providing opportunities to

improve parking provision • Protecting and enhancing the town’s significant green spaces • Creating positive ‘gateway moments’ to define arrival into the Town Centre • Providing a framework for enhancing opportunities to live in the Town Centre The Masterplan identifies a number of opportunity sites within the Town Centre that have the potential for regeneration and renewal, including The Orchards Shopping Centre, some car parks and the Clair Hall site on Perrymount Road. Preparation time: 15 minutes Serves: 4 INGREDIENTS 75g pinhead oatmeal (you can use rolled oats, but the steel cut pinhead variety are nuttier and less porridge-like) 1 tbsp soft brown sugar 250g raspberries 500ml double cream 4 tbsp honey, plus a little extra to drizzle 4 tbsp good Scottish whisky

Whip the cream to fairly stiff peaks, then fold in the honey and whisky. Add three quarters of the oatmeal and all the puree to the cream then swirl through to give a ripple effect.
