COMMENT

EVOLUTION NOT REVOLUTION

A

s the new editor of Horsham Pages North I would like to welcome you to the first issue under my ownership. There has been no change in the personnel running the magazine because Dee Ryder, Gemma Gray and Clare West will continue to deal with client liaison, sales and distribution respectively. I have been working in media and publishing for over 30 years since my first job at Reed Publications in Sutton, Surrey and have been publishing 5 local magazines in Banstead, Tadworth and Epsom. And, since I have family in Horsham, I am very excited to be publishing the only magazines in Horsham and Southwater to be delivered door-to-door and will be keen to maintain the community

feel of Horsham Pages South, Horsham Pages North and Southwater Life. I would like to thank Julie Maxted for all her hard work in ensuring a smooth transition of the business and congratulate her for growing the publications from one magazine to three and increasing circulation from 4,000 to over 28,000 homes and businesses. The magazines will continue to have no political affiliations and are open to anyone in the locality to contribute news, views and articles. There will be gradual improvements in design and content and I welcome any feedback, comments and suggestions. I look forward to serving the community of Horsham. NORTH HORSHAM PARISH COUNCIL

MAKE A DIFFERENCE NEXT YEAR

N

orth Horsham Parish Council wishes you a Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year. Is your new year resolution to get out and meet more people? If you are over 60, then there is an opportunity to attend North Horsham Friendship Club which meets every other Thursday afternoon from 2pm to 4pm at Roffey Millennium Hall. Over the past few weeks the group has enjoyed a lively ‘Oomph’ music and exercise session with Sarah from Glen Arun, produced some spectacular handmade Christmas Crackers thanks to the team from the Repair Café in Horsham and been wonderfully entertained by Tania Rodd who was so good that she received a standing ovation (a first for the group!) and has been invited back next year. The programme of events is available from the Parish Office at Roffey Millennium Hall or on the Parish Council website. A working group of Councillors and residents are exploring setting up a Community Land Trust in North Horsham Parish. ‘Community Land Trusts are a form of community-led housing, set up and run by ordinary people to develop and manage homes as well as other assets. CLTs act as long-term stewards of housing, ensuring that it remains genuinely affordable, based on what people actually earn in their area, not just for now but for every future occupier.’ (National Community Land Trust Network 2018) More information is available on www.communitylandtrusts.org.uk. If you are interesting in joining the group, please let us know. The Parish Council has recruited two new Tree Wardens in the last couple of months. Tree Wardens take a general interest in the trees in the parish and offer valuable local knowledge. The Tree Wardens have started to

8

JAN/FEB 2019

make a log of Parish Council trees and monitor specific trees as required. Finally, if your new year resolution is to make a difference in your community in 2019, then remember that being a Parish Councillor is a great way to give something back to your community, to help have a say on its future and to represent the views of local people. There are currently two vacancies on North Horsham Parish Council, but the Council’s 4 year term ends in May 2019. If there are more than 19 candidates an election will be held. Please keep an eye out for more information in the coming months in Horsham Pages, the Council’s website and its Facebook page. More information about North Horsham Parish Council can be found on the Parish Council website www.northhorsham-pc.gov.uk, or contact the Parish Council through the Clerk on 01403 750786, e-mail parish.clerk@northhorsham-pc.gov.uk

HORSHAM MUSIC CIRCLE

A ‘NEW YEAR CELEBRATION’

H

orsham Music Circle holds a fund raising concert at St Mary’s Parish Church (19 January) when a spendid array of musicians will come together to perform a varied programme as a contribution to Horsham’s Year of Culture celebrating music and welcoming the new year 2019. Those taking part include St Mary’s Church Choir, organist Edward Dean, sopranos Jill Elsworthy and Valerie Lintott, the Handbell Ringers KIPHRA, and Will Duerden, double bass, strings finalist in the BBC Young Musician of the Year. Two other concerts supported by the Year of Culture’s funding scheme are a return visit by the critically acclaimed pianist Jeremy Young (22 March) ‘a player of natural ebullience, he was stylish all evening’, and for the Music Circle’s 77th anniversary concert (11 May) we have drawn together some of our busiest musicians, involved with performance and education, to form a chamber ensemble. The Sharpenhurst Quartet, named after the ‘peak’ that overlooks Christ’s Hospital which is well known as a rural landmark in that area, will be led by Rachel Ellis

and joined by harpist Heather Wrighton and clarinettist Steve Dummer. All concerts are open to the public and individual tickets are available in advance or on the door. STUNNING LINES A recent major donation of art work by the family of Vincent Lines, a leading 20th century British artist, has gone on display at Horsham Museum and Art Gallery.

T

he skilful pen and ink drawings portray the places and people of the Horsham area in the 1930s when Vincent was the popular head of Horsham Art School. Marking the 50th anniversary of his death, the family of Vincent Lines have made the generous decision to gift Horsham Museum some 20 works of art, including 10 drawings of Horsham and its area. Featuring key local landmarks such as St Mary’s Church, Chesworth Farm, Park House, and Market Square illustrate Horsham in a bygone era. The generous donation has inspired Horsham Museum’s 2019 calendar Stunning Lines which features all of his district images given to the Museum, which is now available to purchase. The exhibition Stunning Lines is on display in the Museum’s Watercolour Gallery, a fitting place to display one of the leading watercolour artists of the 20th century, who later

18

JAN/FEB 2019

became Vice President of The Royal Watercolour Society. The family have also given the museum two oils including a brilliant selfportrait with paint pallet in hand and two watercolours of Le Havre, a medium for which he had national recognition. Reflecting his other career as an illustrator of books, Horsham District Council’s Horsham Museum have also been given a rare lithographic stone. Vincent Lines came to Horsham in his 20s to take up the position of Principal at the Horsham School of Art and under his leadership, the school flourished throughout the 1930s. It was Vincent who appointed the renowned stone letter carver and typeface designer and artist David Kindersley to teach at the school. During World War Two Vincent, who was living in Horsham at the time, was asked by Sir Kenneth Clark to join the team of 97

watercolour artists to record Britain that was most likely to be destroyed by bombing and then by progress. So starting in the South East, they moved across the country using watercolours because Clark hoped that the scheme would help preserve this characteristic medium. Over 1,500 watercolours were produced with Vincent painting local scenes including The Causeway. After the war, Vincent moved to Hastings where he became principal of the Hastings School of Art inspiring other pupils. He also continued to draw and illustrate books including The English Windmill published in the 1950s. Stunning Lines by Vincent Lines at Horsham Museum & Art Gallery opens on 9 November until 9 February 2019. Admission is free of charge. HORSHAM MUSEUM & ART GALLERY

THE STORY OF ROFFEY CAMP

T

o mark the centenary of the signing of the Armistice on 11th November 1918, Horsham Museum & Art Gallery have chosen to highlight the story of Roffey Camp. Using contemporary photography, film footage, the camp newspaper, and locally-produced posters, the display aims to highlight the life of the camp and its relationship to the local area. The outbreak of war saw around 1,500 young soldiers from London arriving in Horsham. The population of Horsham in 1914 was a mere 11,500, and therefore the addition of 1,500 young men would have been a major event. By early March 1915, work was completed at the new Roffey Camp and the battalion were moved into new, purpose-built accommodation. Roffey Camp stretched from the Norfolk Arms to Forest Road, with the main entrance on Crawley Road.

At D&J Gardening Lawn & Hedge Care we have the right tools to get the job done. Lawn, hedge care and gardening services. JAN/FEB 2019

The camp was home to numerous groups of soldiers and remained in use until 1919. The human cost of the First World War was enormous, and is still felt to this day. The photographs and ephemera in the exhibition demonstrate the duality of the war. Lively, active young men signed up to do their bit for King and Country, with the support of the nation. Gradually, as the reality of the brutal conflict became clear, the joy and national pride so visible in these images began to fade. The First World War serves as a reminder of the devastating impact of war, and the tragedy of these young lives cut short in their prime. Home from Home: Life at Roffey Camp in WWI runs from 6 November to 19 January 2019. Admission is free of charge. Horsham Museum and Art Gallery is open Monday-Saturday 10am 5pm. Every dish in each seasonal, multicourse tasting menu is designed to a huntergatherer farmer concept of food that’s foraged, cultivated and raised on the estate or close by. It is savoured and enjoyed as an intimate dining experience, a small, exclusive dinner party within the estate’s Italianate mansion house.” says owner Penny Streeter OBE. She has opened the restaurant (October 19th 2018) after 18 months’ intensive restoration of the gardens and Grade II Listed mansion house. The gardens will open in early 2019. Diners can feast on the multiple courses that include for example: estate rabbit, winter purslane, hogweed cider and charcoal; also fallow deer with local braai and sour raspberry; and oyster, foraged greens and juniper. Jean has particular experience from South Africa of how to complement extraordinary tasting menus with fine wines. Guests at Interlude can enjoy a selection of wines from the owner’s vineyard at Benguela Cove, Hermanus in South Africa. In Sussex, Penny Streeter has planted 40 acres of vineyards at Leonardslee and at a second site, three miles away at Mannings Heath, where she has created the UK’s first golf and wine estate. Guests arriving at the mansion house, built in 1855, are greeted in the grand hallway with music from a self-playing piano and drinks in the bar. They are then seated together at around 7pm in the restaurant, enjoying views across acres of gardens in the steep valley below, and east and south across to the South Downs. Penny Streeter OBE is the owner of the Benguela Collection vineyards and hospitality group. It includes the 400 acre Mannings Heath Golf and Wine Estate, located three miles from Leonardslee, and Benguela Cove vineyard in South Africa, as well as four restaurants and a hotel on the Garden Route.

Chef Jean Delport.

Executive Chef Jean Delport has worked with owner Penny Streeter at her restaurant in Somerset West, Cape Town for several years. Jean trained and won awards at the prestigious Zevenwacht Chef School in South Africa. With a background in classical French and English cooking, including several seasons in Ireland, he is noted as an innovator, changing and improving upon his own menus and selection of ingredients regularly. Chef Ruan Pretorius began his career, and was finally head chef at restaurant Terroir in the Cape winelands in South Africa. Terroir is one of South Africa’s most decorated restaurants, in the top 20 of the country for 19 years running. He decided to join Jean Delport in the UK to meet an exciting new challenge at Restaurant Interlude. #restaurantinterlude Facebook: www.facebook.com/InterludeSussex Twitter: www.twitter.com/InterludeSussex Instagram: www.instagram.com/interludesussex The 200 acre Leonardslee Lakes & Gardens, attracted some 50,000 visitors a year until it closed in 2010 as a result of financial difficulties. a unique doll’s house exhibition on site. A rare colony of wallabies, wildfowl and huge carp in the seven ponds are a further attraction. The garden restoration project has been described as the largest of its kind since Heligan in the 1990s. With no maintenance work carried out for eight years, it has required a team of up to 20 gardeners working since the summer of 2017 to restore the gardens, including clearing nearly 10 miles of pathways along the steep valley landscape. Leonardslee Lakes & Gardens and Mannings Heath Golf & Wine Estate are divisions of The Benguela Collection, a wine producer and hospitality group that Penny Streeter started in 2013 with the acquisition of the Benguela Cove Wine Estate, at the edge of South Africa’s southern coast. The group now includes four restaurants and a hotel on the Garden Route.

A new Pinotage planting in 2018 brings the total of vines under cultivation to 66,000 across 16 hectares at Leonardslee and a second site, three miles away at Mannings Heath, where a vineyard was planted in 2017 to create the UK’s first golf and wine estate. Total production is projected at some 100 tonnes, 75,000 bottles of sparkling wine annually: Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier - and now a non-sparkling Pinotage. The first crop is due in 2020 and first release of wine in 2023.

VEGAN FEST HORSHAM

W

ith the rapidly growing interest in the benefits of a plant-based diet, Horsham is looking forward to welcoming its first vegan fair. Vegan Fest Horsham is for everyone vegans, non-vegans and anyone who is just a little bit interested in what a plantbased lifestyle entails! The fair will be a celebration of all things vegan – from chocolates, beer, beauty products, cakes, books, household items and stalls offering general advice on a vegan lifestyle, as well as a number of catering stalls offering a wide range of hot and cold foods. There will be a series of free talks throughout the day focusing on vegan or animal related topics.

30

JAN/FEB 2019

Until recently, veganism was considered extreme and mainstream media comments were often negative. However with an estimated 3.5 million vegans in the UK, all that is changing as more plant-based options are becoming available in supermarkets, shops and restaurants. For many, the transition to veganism is triggered by awareness of the cruelty to animals in both the meat and dairy industry. For others it may be for health reasons, as it now generally accepted that a well-planned plant-based diet can bring many long-term health benefits. And for most, the decision to follow a vegan lifestyle goes hand in hand with knowing that overall it is considered a more environmentally friendly way of living. So whether you are a fully-fledged vegan or just need some ideas or a bit of inspiration for a vegan friend or relative, do come along and take a look! Vegan Fest Horsham will be at the Drill Hall in Denne Road, Horsham on Saturday 23rd February 2019 from 10.30am till 4.30pm. The entrance fee is £2.00 per person (under 16’s free) and all profits will be going jointly to The Born Free Foundation and Animals Asia (UK registered charities). For further details visit Vegan Fest Horsham’s Facebook page or email veganfesthorsham@gmail.com.

Employment

ACCOUNTANTS

EMPLOYED OR SELF-EMPLOYED? Recent trends suggest that self-employment is on the rise. However, determining whether someone is classed as employed or self-employed can be a surprisingly complex issue. The practical differences between employed and self-employed workers may seem relatively straightforward:

Employees

Determining employment status

Employees are taxed under the Pay as You Earn (PAYE) system, and both the employee and the employer are liable to pay Class 1 national insurance contributions (NICs). The employer also has responsibility for paying Statutory Sick Pay and Statutory Maternity, Adoption or Paternity Pay.

When it comes to determining employment status, it is the responsibility of the person making the payment to assess status correctly. If a worker is treated as self-employed and is later found to be an employee, payments will be treated as net payments, and all corresponding tax and NICs will need to be paid by the employer - as well as, potentiallly, interest and penalties for incorrect returns.

Employees also have specific rights under health and safety and employment laws, as well as access to a greater range of social security benefits than self-employed workers.

HMRC has an online tool which can be used in determining employment status. The employment status indictor can be accessed at www.tax.service.gov.uk/checkemployment-status-for-tax. However, issues regarding employment status do arise in practice, even when the tool is used.

How we can help

Self-employed workers In contrast, self-employed workers are taxed using the self-assessment system, and are responsible for calculating their own tax liability and making any payments due. They are liable to pay Class 2 and Class 4 NICs - the combined burden of which is lower than Class 1 NICs. There is no employer for a self-employed business, so no employer’s NICs are due. Self-employed workers have fewer benefits and working rights than employees: however, they do have more scope in regard to claiming expenses. www.taxadept.co.uk

Assessing employment status can be a complex affair. Tax Adept offers a wealth of information and advice which is specifically designed to help you and your business. You can find further details on the relative benefits of employment and self-employment in the Resources section of our website: www.taxadept.co.uk. That’s how much you, as a West Sussex resident, could expect to pay for your care in a residential or nursing care home. Don’t leave it to chance that your finances will meet the cost of your care.

Ease the worry of paying for care The good news is that there is advice and support available to help you with this important financial decision. As part of this scheme, you can also access a free money advice service from Age UK West Sussex.

Take control of your finances It is now even simpler to arrange your FREE consultation with a care fees specialist with our new ‘request a call back’ service. Visit www.carewiseadvice.com where you will find a list of all the care fees specialists, choose the adviser you would like to talk to, and request a call back from them. You will then be contacted within one working day.

Rose’s story by a Carewise care fees specialist I first met 83-year-old Rose in 2005. She was in good mental and physical health, but she had lost confidence about living on her own and wanted to move into a care home. Once her house was sold, Rose had around £218,000 in available capital. Together, we

reviewed her income and expenditure, and worked out that she would have a shortfall of £16,410 per year in meeting the cost of her care home. I obtained quotes for an immediate care plan for Rose and recommended she purchase a plan where the payout would

increase by five per cent per year. This would help to cover future increases in care fees at the home. The income payments were paid to the care home, tax-free. Rose paid £85,925 for the plan. By 2009, Rose’s care plan had paid for itself. In 2013, the plan had paid out £155,257, which is £69,332 more than she paid for it. (This is a real case with the name of the customer changed.)

@HOME WIN BEST AGENCY AGAIN

@

Home Estate Agents have been named as the best estate and lettings agency in West Sussex by the Best Estate Agent Guide for the second year running. And they’ve also bagged 8th place for the whole of the UK, which is the best in the South East region (excluding London)! @Home were also the only local company to be rated as Exceptional in both Estate Agency and Lettings Agency services and were only one of 4 UK branches to be rated as Exceptional in all 3 judging areas. This builds on last year’s success when they came 28th in the UK as the best performing branch in West Sussex. The Best Estate Agent Guide is the most rigorous estate agency performance review undertaken, assessing over 25,000 estate and letting agency branches in the UK using independent experts and scoring against a set of performance and customer service criteria. It marks the start of an exciting month for @Home as they are also the only UK based agency to be shortlisted for 3 categories in The Negotiator Awards. The Best Estate Agent Guide and Negotiator Awards really are the pinnacle of estate agency recognition and have been described as ‘The Oscars’ of estate agency. Director Paul Davies says: “I’m absolutely thrilled with yet another recognition of how hard we work as a team and am thankful for our clients that support us. The team deserves the credit here and it’s hard to believe that in just 3 years of trading, the Best Estate Agent Guide has rated us each year as the best estate and lettings agency locally. We can add that to the British Property Awards rating us as the best in the Horsham District for 2 years running and All Agents recognising us as the best locally for 3 years running and the forthcoming Negotiator Awards shortlisting in 3 categories. As a team, we have a real passion for property

and our expertise in online property marketing, coupled with sales excellence and a team that are willing to go above and beyond the call of duty has proved to be a winning formula and helped us grow into 2 branches in Southwater and Horsham. We do things differently and it’s nice to see that the overwhelming majority of our 5* reviews mention honesty, communication and trustworthiness as part of our strengths. Estate agency doesn’t always have the best reputation but were changing that 1 client at a time. @Home Estate and lettings Agency are a local, independently run company. Their marketing reach is wider than any other local agency which helps them achieve better sales prices. They are the only company to advertise property on all of the online property portals and in all of the local newspapers. They also run as a co-operative in that the team have a 25% profit share and is the reason they get such great reviews. SUSSEX POLICE

SPATE OF BURGLARIES

P

olice are investigating six burglaries at homes in Horsham and Southwater which happened on the same day. Intruders broke into properties in Blackbridge Lane, Duchell Copse and Spencers Place, Horsham, and Millfields, Nutham Lane, Cedar Lane in Southwater on Thursday (8 November). They made an untidy search of each house and jewellery was stolen from all apart from the one in Nutham Lane, where the burglars were disturbed. Detective Constable Simon Goulding said: "We believe this series of burglaries are linked and we are urging anyone with information or any witnesses to contact us. "We are also advising householders to lock all doors and windows even if you are in the back garden, consider installing an intruder alarm, mark your valuables by using your postcode, leave some lights on if it will be dark before you get home and fit security lighting." If you witnessed any suspicious behaviour or have any information about the burglaries please contact police online or ring 101 quoting serial 490 of 08/11. A burglary in your own home is a devastating experience that can affect you and your family long after the incident has occurred. The good news is that the risk of becoming a victim of burglary in Sussex is low. By applying a few prevention methods you can make your home less attractive to burglars - see below. If you see any suspicious activity please contact us at www.sussex.police.uk/contact-us/

DAILY SECURITY • Keep all wallets, purses, credit cards and car keys out of sight and out of reach. • If you leave your house empty, even if you are in the back garden, lock all the doors and windows.

• An intruder alarm can be an effective deterrent against burglars, seek advice to ensure it is the most suitable for your needs. • Make it a habit to mark your valuables by using your postcode and house number or name. • Some articles are unsuitable for marking so photograph them next to a ruler. • Register your property at www.immobilise.com, it's free of charge and can increase your chances of being reunited with your property. DURING SUMMER • Remember to close all windows, especially those on the ground floor, when you go out. • If you are in your garden, remember to lock your front door and close windows. • Consider fitting window restrictors to keep you cool when you are asleep. AFTER DARK • Leave some lights on if it will be dark before you get home. • When you go out in the evening, always leave a light on in a room that can not be peered into from the road. • Fit security lighting - either dusk to dawn energy efficient lighting that will come on automatically as dusk sets in, or infrared activated lighting which draws attention to movement. IN THE GARDEN • Ensure that gates or access to the rear of the house are locked and secure. • Trim overgrown plants - don't give burglars a hiding place. • Secure garden tools and ladders in a locked shed or garage to prevent them being used to break into your home. Fit outside security lighting and a visible burglar alarm to help deter burglars.

LOCAL AUTHOR

THE FAITHFUL BY JULIET WEST

T

he paperback edition of the latest novel by local writer Juliet West (above) has just been published. Set in the Sussex village of Aldwick in the 1930s, ‘The Faithful’ follows 16-year-old Hazel as she is drawn in to the dark world of Oswald Mosley’s blackshirts. When the blackshirts set up a seaside camp near her home, she finds herself befriended by two very different people: Lucia, who is fiercely loyal to the party, and Tom, who is desperate to break away. Hazel and Tom fall in love, but as Britain is pulled towards war, Hazel’s life goes into freefall. A tangle of secrets threatens to snare her, and she must decide where to place her trust. Juliet West grew up in Worthing and studied history at Cambridge University. She worked as a journalist before taking an MA in Creative Writing at Chichester University, where she graduated with distinction and won the Kate Betts’ Memorial Prize. Juliet is also the author of ‘Before the Fall’ published by Mantle/Macmillan in 2014 In addition to writing novels, Juliet is also a copywriter for local marketing agency PMW Communications, where she uses her writing

skills on a wide range of projects. Juliet says, “For many years fiction-writing was only a hobby, and to be honest I still pinch myself when I see my books in the shops. “I just love writing in all its forms, and I feel very lucky to be able to work with words and tell stories for a living.” Peter Sutton, Managing Director at PMW Communications added, “Congratulations to Juliet on the launch of her latest novel in paperback. We’re delighted to have someone with her writing ability working with us, and I do wonder how many of our clients realise the copy for their website, or press advert, or their latest blog has been written by a successful and published novelist!” The Faithful is published by Pan Macmillan and is available to buy from leading book stores and online platforms. Further information can be found by visiting www.julietwest.co.uk.

HORSHAM LIONS CLUB

SWIMARATHON PLANNED FOR 2019

T

he Swimarathon is one of Horsham Lions biggest annual events and next year will be their eighth year running the event at The Pavilions in the Park Leisure Centre. Over the last seven years the Swimarathon has raised over £50,000 for Horsham Lions Club which has been donated to a number of local schools, organisations and charities. The event takes place on Sunday 19 March 2019 and the closing date for entries is 4th February 2019. In 2017 and 2018 the event supported Chestnut Tree House Children’s Hospice which provides a wide range of services for children with life-shortening conditions and their families. Over the two years the event raised an amazing amount totalling £18,192.29 for the hospice. In 2019, we are supporting Jigsaw Trust which provides specialist education and support for children and adults with autism, based on Dunsfold Park in Surrey. The aims of Jigsaw Trust are to improve the lives of those affected by an autism spectrum disorder and to promote a greater knowledge and understanding of autism. Founded on the principle of excellence through continual learning, the Trust aspires to provide the highest quality of education and lifelong learning possible. Set up in 1999 by a group of local parents of children with autism, Jigsaw CABAS School now provides specialist education for 65 children

aged 4-19 years. A separate Life Skills Centre has been established in Guildford which provides a home environment for students to increase their levels of independence by learning and practicing essential life skills. JigsawPlus, established in 2012, has recently opened its new Centre for Lifelong Learning where it provides support for 31 adults with autism aged 18+, developing their independence and essential life skills. Additionally, the Trust has been operating a number of Social Enterprises; including, GARDENworks, ARTWorks and Cafe on the Park. Cafe on the Park provides a unique environment in which Jigsaw Plus adult learners can undertake a wide variety of work experience tasks within a safe and supportive environment. Jigsaw relies on the fundraising efforts and support of the local community to ensure that they can provide the best resources and learning opportunities for their pupils and adult learners. As Jigsaw is continually expanding, the school is now in need of a new early year’s play area for the younger pupils to enjoy during their break times. The funds raised from this event will help Jigsaw to provide a fun and safe play area to help their pupils explore and develop their motor skills, imagination, balance and sensory stimulation through play. This is essential for all children to develop and understand their surroundings. In addition the staff and students at the school new lap top computers and I pads

PSYCHOTHERAPY & COUNSELLING

NO SHAME IN MENTAL ILLNESS

F

rom time to time we all face difficulties in our lives but how much these affect us and how we overcome them, differs from person to person. This is often because in addition to obvious suffering, there can be other events that seem ‘normal’ or minor. These can all trigger, usually unconsciously, a past trauma. It has been reported that this is the underlying cause of post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD, and that people suffering with this debilitating condition have been retraumatised. Of course, the sufferer is usually unaware of past suffering as the immediate symptoms are prevalent and sometimes allconsuming. This is also relevant to other mental health conditions and illnesses. In my experience, I

48

NOVEMBER 2018

have not met anyone coping with mental health difficulties who has not experienced trauma of some kind in their background. This may be because those people are more vulnerable to abuse for example, but I believe that trauma has contributed to their lack of well-being. Mental illness is not restricted to a few. Members of the royal family, particularly Prince Harry, have highlighted their own difficulties and there should be no shame in any of us acknowledging and sharing our suffering and seeking help to overcome it. besity is a growing epidemic amongst our pets and can contribute to many health problems including heart disease, arthritis, diabetes, breathing difficulties, heat stroke and skin problems. Unfortunately, all of these conditions can reduce the life expectancy of our pets. Overweight pets usually develop as a result of too much food and too little exercise although age, breed and neutering can also be factors. However in some cases there are health problems that can result in a pet becoming overweight, for example dogs with an underactive thyroid. If you are concerned your pet is overweight, your veterinary practice can help you to tackle the problem. Special diets can be prescribed that aid with weight reduction in dogs and cats. Dog versions have reduced calorie and fat content but high fibre to ensure they feel full. Cats respond well to a high protein, low carbohydrate diet. There are even diets available now for both species that alter metabolic rate resulting in weight loss. Exercise is also very important in achieving a slimmer pet. For dogs regular walks, playing with toys, food search games at meal times, swimming and agility are fun ways to increase exercise. For cats encouraging them to spend time outside, playing with toys or white light pens and food dispensing balls can all be helpful. So when you are thinking about your New Year diet include your pet and work together; increasing exercise will benefit you both. Tel: 01403 791011. www.maltmancosham.co.uk

FORTY years (I know, I don’t look old enough!!) in this

wonderful industry. We recently took ten team members for twenty days of cutting-edge education to help us

prepare to deliver the very best in design for 2019. I was surprised to find that aside from understanding the current trends and emerging technologies, the most vital aspect in designer hair is still the consultation. Now I don’t mean “what are we doing today?” or “so it’s just a trim?”, and, worse still “I think we’ll just take it up”. A great consultation starts with these considerations: • How much time do you have? • Does your work/lifestyle affect your hair? • Let’s look at your face shape, do you wear your glasses all the time? • Let’s think about your natural style and image. • Tell me what products are part of your styling routine. • Let’s think about budget.

WEST SUSSEX PHILHARMONIC CHOIR

MOZART PROVIDES ENTERTAINMENT

A

choral society does not usually feature a major instrumental concerto in its programming. On Saturday at St Mary’s Parish church the West Sussex Philharmonic choir did exactly that and came up with a first class evening’s entertainment. They had considerable help from Mozart whose music was played throughout. Eine kleine nachtmusik started the ball rolling, played with a precision not usually achieved by a group of musicians who do not play together regularly. Soprano LesleyJane Rogers sang Laudate Dominum from the vespers, being joined by the choir, albeit briefly, to bring a gentle and soothing piece to a close.

For many people with busy lives and lack of time, it’s not easy to keep on top of all those odd jobs and home improvvements. So, let your local Smarthomes Ha andyman do the hard work for you‌ UĂŠ Â?>ĂŒĂŠ*>VÂŽĂƒĂŠ Ă•ÂˆÂ?ĂŒ UĂŠ Â?iVĂŒĂ€ÂˆV>Â?ĂŠ-iĂ€Ă›ÂˆViĂƒ UĂŠ*Â?ՓLˆ˜}ĂŠ-iĂ€Ă›ÂˆViĂƒ UĂŠ iVÂœĂ€>ĂŒÂˆÂ˜}ĂŠ-iĂ€Ă›ÂˆViĂƒ UĂŠ ÂˆĂŒVÂ…iÂ˜ĂƒĂŠEĂŠ >ĂŒÂ…Ă€ÂœÂœÂ“Ăƒ UĂŠ-ÂŽĂž] Ăž]ĂŠ Ă€iiĂƒ>ĂŒĂŠEĂŠ Ă€iiĂ›ÂˆiĂœĂŠ-iĂ€Ă›ÂˆViĂƒ UĂŠ œ“iĂŠ ˆ˜i“>ĂŠ Â˜ĂƒĂŒ>Â?Â?>ĂŒÂˆÂœÂ˜ UĂŠ"Ă•ĂŒ`ÂœÂœĂ€ĂŠEĂŠ >Ă€>}iĂŠ7ÂœĂ€ÂŽ UĂŠ* ĂƒĂŠ-Ă•ÂŤÂŤÂ?ˆi`ĂŠEĂŠ,iÂŤ>ÂˆĂ€i` UĂŠ Â?Â?ĂŠ9Âœ 9ÂœĂ•Ă€ĂŠ"``ĂŠ ÂœLĂƒ

This was followed by the renowned Clarinet Concerto played by Peter Cigleris on a bassett horn in preference to a standard clarinet. This choice showed itself to full advantage in the fruity notes at the bottom of the low register which the instrument is able to produce. This was a faultless performance, in which the melancholy of the early part of the work contrasted splendidly with the joyful and spirited final section. Alleluia, Alleluia is a well loved show stopper for a soprano and Lesley-Jane seized the opportunity to give us ultra-high notes which most amateur choral sopranos would not even attempt. After the interval, the choir came into its own in Mozart’s Requiem. Support came from Louise Crane (mezzo), Justin Lavender (tenor) and David Wilson-Johnson (bass) and of course Lesley-Jane. It was clear from the outset that Stephen Hope has had a strong influence on the choir’s ability to produce crisp singing, variety of dynamic and good diction; these strengths were demonstrated particularly in the Lacrymosa. As well as the effect he has brought to the choir, Stephen’s guidance and control of the orchestra throughout was excellent. All in all it was a very exciting concert which richly rewarded all those who experienced a well attended event. This choir is performing better each time I hear it. Richard Rowley

reheat the oven to 200C / gas 6 / fan 180C. Put the chunks of celeriac, swede, sweet potato,

parsnips and garlic in a large roasting tin. Sprinkle liberally with the olive oil and cumin, and season well with salt and pepper. Toss the vegetables together so they are lightly coated in oil. Put in the oven towards the top and roast for 30 minutes. Meanwhile, lightly oil then season the chicken skins, and lay a couple of sage leaves over each thigh or drumstick. CONNECT TO SUPPORT

CONNECTING YOU FOR A BETTER LIFE CONNECTING YOU TO EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO STAY INDEPENDENT AND LIVE WELL FOR LONGER www.westsussexconnecttosupport.org

W

e understand how difficult it can be to get all the information and advice you need to support you in your day to day activities. That’s why we created West Sussex Connect to Support – a website which brings together a wealth of information and resources that you can access with just a few clicks. You’ll see on the homepage that the website is split into different sections to help you find what you’re looking for. • I want some information and advice – advice and information on health and well-being, money matters, being a carer, different conditions and disabilities and much more. • I want to find things to do locally – clubs, support groups and activities where you can learn a new skill, meet likeminded people in your community, and keep active. • I want to buy products and services – equipment or services to help you stay safe around your home and support you day-to-day. Take a look around our Equipment House where you can go from room to room and discover the help that’s available. • I want to find out about social care support – you can complete an online assessment which you can use to help you plan and buy your support.
