LOTTERY TO HELP LOCAL GROUPS

O

n page 14 you can read about the new Community Lottery Tickets which are on sale from 29th August. In fact, there have already been over 90 expressions of interest from community groups across the District received by Horsham District Council to be a partner in the new Community Lottery.

The lottery, when it launches, will raise vital funds to support community groups whose work benefits residents in Horsham District and will also give ticket buyers the chance to win up to £25,000! There is no charge to the community group and signing up is quick and easy.

Participating community groups will get their own promotional webpage on the dedicated Community Lottery website, dedicated marketing materials, and 50% of all ticket sales from

supporters who select their page.

Anyone buying a £1 ticket can select the community group they want to support from those registered on the website. 50p of the £1 ticket price goes directly to the ticket buyer's chosen group. 10p in every pound also goes into a community lottery fund which will be distributed by the Council to community projects across the District. The rest of the money goes towards prizes, VAT and administration costs.

BRING YOUR OLD PHOTOGRAPHS North Horsham Parish Council covering the areas of Roffey, North Heath, Holbrook and Littlehaven - working in the community for the community.

T

hank you to those who took part in the ‘North Horsham Now and Then’ event on 6th July 2019 and who submitted photographs taken around the parish on that day. The photographs are now displayed on the Parish Council website and form a historic record for the future. On Saturday 7th September 2019, as part of the ‘North Horsham Now and Then’ project, the Parish Council is hosting an opportunity for residents to come along to Roffey Millennium Hall, Crawley Road, Horsham between 10.30am and 12.30pm and bring their old photographs of the area for a chat over a cup of tea and a biscuit. This is a chance to make new friends and find out more about the area in which you live.

There will be people on hand to greet you and to start the conversation going.

The Multi Use Games Areas at Holbrook Tythe Barn are available for hire Monday to Friday during the daytime. Have you thought about getting together with friends for a game of football, walking football or netball? The courts can be hired for an hour at a time. For more details please contact the Parish Council office.

The Parish Council was concerned recently to find that a lower bough had fallen from the English oak in the field at Earles Meadow. The tree is classed as in its veteran stage and of significant cultural and ecological importance. It is a superb tree for wildlife habitat and ecological diversity. The fallen bough has been removed and remedial work is being done to conserve the tree for future generations. The boardwalks at Earles

Meadow are in the process of being repaired and there is a small playground nearby which is popular for smaller children. This is just one of the open spaces and playgrounds owned and maintained by North Horsham Parish Council. Others can be found at Birches Road, Holbrook Tythe Barn and Amberley Road.

The Parish Council was disappointed not to have any response to the call for support for a Community Land Trust which would aim to try to provide more affordable housing locally. The Parish Council believes that lack of affordable housing is still an issue for people in North Horsham with many people not able to afford to live locally because of high rents and high property prices.

Another art-based project, taking place in Horsham over two weekends is Watch This Space, on the hoardings of a building in North Street.

Twenty artists have been creating artwork on the hoardings, which will stay in place until the end of the year. The paintings will be auctioned off at the end of the year; a perfect chance to own a unique piece of art.

Year of Culture 2019 are brightening up the District during summer.

The first, Street Pianos, has seen five schools

painting pianos donated by the Horsham Piano Centre, which have now been put into place across the District for people to play on.

QEII Silver Jubilee School, Castlewood Primary School, St Mary’s CofE Primary School, Billingshurst Primary School and Steyning CofE Primary School have all been decorating their pianos with the help of artist Anna Lim. As of this week all the pianos will be in their new homes for the summer, and families are invited to follow the trail to find all the instruments.

Over August there will be celebration events at each of the pianos, to support Chestnut Tree House a hospice which cares for 300 children and young adults up to 19 years old with progressive lifeshortening conditions. Talented musicians will perform at the piano and everyone is welcome to join in.

T

he Horsham Time Well Spent event calendar brought a French flavour to Horsham’s Carfax on Sunday 14 July which conveniently fell on Bastille Day. Sponsored by Cote Restaurants, Horsham and organised by Horsham District Council and Horsham Markets by Food Rocks and partners, the day had a nicely relaxed feel and catered for many ages and interests.

The France at Home French market did a roaring trade in Gallic specialities in the Carfax alongside a lovely Montmartre style display of painting from HAOS members, a jazz trio and mime artist. The 45eme Napoleonic Regiment re-enactment group ably supported by The Children of the (French) Revolution put on a packed display of period history, all presented in a highly informative and entertaining way. A working replica guillotine was popular, alongside ‘cartridge sweet making’, a Punchinello show and various talks and displays from the group.

Thanks to local car enthusiast, Ross Charman and the Citroen Owners Group, a fine and extremely eclectic display of French vehicles filled East Street with everything

otanical art, the beautifully exquisite celebration of the natural world blending art and science in technical and artistic perfection, is a challenging and demanding art form. The ancient market town of Horsham has been the home of some of this country’s leading exponents who have not only developed the eye, brush and palette, but have inspired a new generation of local artists. Now, in 2019, coming together to create the stunning exhibition Garden of Botanical Art at Horsham Museum & Art Gallery celebrating the work of nine artists they have agreed to work, inform and collaborate to promote and develop this wonderful art form.

Horsham born, Jill Coombs, the doyenne of the School, has been perfecting the art for over forty years, creating award winning floral portraits that have captivated collectors from around the world as well as being acquired by the leading botanical organisations. Jill’s work can be seen in the Dr Shirley Sherwood Collection, The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, The Royal Horticultural Society, Chelsea Physic Garden and the Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation, Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, USA. The Royal Horticultural Society has also awarded Jill the Gold medal three times

for her watercolours. Jill has also produced paintings for the Highgrove Florilegium, for The Prince of Wales Trust set up to record plants in Highgrove Gardens.

Jill’s enthusiasm and teaching ability inspired other artists to take up the challenge, including Storrington based artist Suzanne Merrikin who has been awarded the Silver Gilt by the Royal Horticultural Society for her watercolours. Leigh Ann Gale, who was awarded medals by the RHS and the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden in Cape Town, South Africa, not only teaches and practises her art, but has also put pen to paper writing highly regarded books to guide the novice to achieve more. Leigh Ann’s work is held in the permanent collection at the Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation in Pittsburgh, USA, The Florilegium Society at Sydney Botanic Gardens, Hampton Court Palace Archives, Nymans Florilegium, and private collections. One of her students is the talented and modest Hazel Barnard who is also a member of the School.

A Garden of Botanical Art at Horsham District Council’s Horsham Museum & Art Gallery opens on 6 July and runs until 14 September 2019 as part of the Horsham District’s Year of Culture.

NEW HOME FOR FOOTBALL CLUB

H

orsham District Council is delighted to confirm that work on the new grounds for Broadbridge Heath Football Club has now been completed and the land has been handed over to the Club. These new facilities include a £1 million pavilion, stadium and two full size football pitches, as well as a junior size pitch.

As part of a development of around 1,000 homes south of the Broadbridge Heath, Countryside Properties was responsible for delivering a range of community and sports facilities including the new football ground.

Cllr Jonathan Chowen, Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture said: “The Council has always remained committed to facilitating this project and doing everything within its remit to reach a final solution which meets the needs and aspirations of the Broadbridge Heath Football Club and the local community.

“We are pleased that the work with Countryside Properties has now been completed and we are delighted to see the club prepare to move into its new home.”

The first home game at the new ground was on Tuesday 6 August. Andy Crisp, Senior Club Secretary and Director of Broadbridge Heath Football Club said: “We can now boast some of the best facilities

in the league; a pavilion with four team changing rooms, three match official changing rooms, a social area, bar, kitchen, board room, office, store room and toilet facilities.

“Outside we have a floodlit ground that meets the standard required for Step 5 football, a further two pitches to the south of the site, one with floodlights for training and the potential of using the Multi Use Game Areas and further fitness facilities in the Leisure Centre immediately next door. What more could we ask for?

“We'd also like to give a special mention to Horsham District Council's Trevor Beadle, former Head of Community Services, whose job it was to liaise between the developers, the Council and the Football Club; a truly difficult job for anyone trying to keep us all happy but Trevor went above and beyond to help the football club and he will always be made welcome at the club.”

t the time of writing, Roffey’s Title chase is still on and not just for the 1st XI as currently 3 out of 4 teams are all sitting in pole position in their leagues with only 3 weeks remaining of the season. The 1st XI are 62 points clear in their league so if they secure a maximum of 30 points on Saturday against Preston Nomads that would make them champions with 2 games remaining. The 2nd XI and 3rd XI have a tougher fight as they are only 32 points and 49 points clear with 3 games to go so need to win 2 out of 3 games to secure their titles. Our 4th team are also have a great season as they are sitting in 3rd position so this is looking to go down as one of the most successful years at the club in history for all the 4 sides.

The 1st XI beat Horsham in the Semi Final of the T20 competition and have secured their position in the Final against Eastbourne on 8th September at the Sussex County Ground, so that makes it that they have the possibility to win the double this year.

The club is always looking for new players to come join our colts’ sides as well as the adult teams and we will be running winter nets. scar-winning actor Jeremy Irons has made a financial contribution to No Incinerator 4 Horsham Community Group’s campaign.

Jeremy, who has appeared in films such as “The French Lieutenant’s Woman”, was contacted by Ni4H Community Group in the hope of enlisting his support for their campaign on behalf of local residents.

Jeremy also sent Ni4H Community Group a copy of his TRASHED environmental documentary film, with music by Vangelis. The film looks into the effect of toxic emissions from incinerators and reveals the extent our rubbish is affecting us and our planet.

Blenheim Films said: “With the participation of Jeremy Irons, Candida Brady’s multi award winning documentary looks at the risks to the food chain and the environment through pollution of our air, land and sea by waste. The film reveals surprising truths about very immediate and potent dangers to our health. It is a global conversation from Iceland to Indonesia between the film star Jeremy Irons and scientists, politicians and ordinary individuals whose health and livelihoods have been fundamentally affected by waste pollution. Visually and emotionally the film is both horrific and beautiful: an interplay of human interest and political wake-up call. y wife and I own a house in Devon and a flat in London. I stay at the London flat for a few nights a week and have a main residence election nominating the London flat. We are selling the family home and buying a new home in Devon. Will I have to pay the additional 3% Stamp Duty Land Tax? ANSWER:

S

tamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT) can be charged at ordinary residential rates plus an additional 3% where an additional dwelling is purchased which is not replacing a previous main residence.

The nomination of the London flat as the main residence applies for the purposes of Capital Gains Tax relief only.

For SDLT, taxpayers do not have the option to nominate a main residence, nor is there a requirement that spouses must only have one main residence between them.

There is no statutory definition of ‘main residence’ for SDLT. Which of two residences is the main one must be determined by considering how you reside in them. Case law has determined that a main residence is not the residence in which one spends more time, but that which is more important.

There are many factors determining which property is more important and not all of those indicators are not evenly weighted. You might like to search the internet for “SDLTM09812” to review HMRCs manual on

the meaning of main residence for SDLT. If the London flat is determined to be your main residence for SDLT, then SDLT on the new Devon property will be charged with the additional 3% rate on the entire transaction because the property will not be a replacement of a main residence for both joint purchasers.

If the Devon property is determined to be your main residence for SDLT, the additional 3% charge would not apply to the purchase of your new home. However, it would be sensible to document the reasons for this decision to safeguard against a challenge from HMRC.

On Saturday and Sunday The Carfax will also host the Live Cookery Theatre, where you can watch some top chefs at work in the kitchen and pick up some great gourmet tips.

New for 2019 are street food 'Taste Explorers’ menus, which give visitors the opportunity to sample a range of smaller dishes from a variety of cuisines. This will suit those with smaller appetites or budgets.

HYDRATION: WHY ITS SO IMPORTANT

I

t’s summer time and the sun has finally arrived. With the smell of BBQs wafting in the air, our thoughts turn to what refreshing beverage we should have to wash down those succulent sausages.

Staying hydrated during hot weather is vitally important to our overall health and wellbeing but not all liquids hit the spot.

On average, water makes up between 60% and 75% of our body weight, depending on age. And without it you’ll only be able to survive for a few days, compared to a few weeks without food.

So, why is water so important?

• It helps us to regulate our body temperature through sweating and breathing.

• It can assist in lubricating our joints.

• With 75% of the brain made up of water, we need it for optimal brain function.

• It will aid in eliminating waste from the body through the urine, breath and stool.

• Water helps with the digestion process by forming saliva and breaking down food.

If the thought of drinking water isn’t exciting to you, can always add a little bit of kick to it by investing in a reusable water infuser and add lemon, orange, cucumber, lime or mint for flavour.

For most people, water is still the best thing to drink, but non-alcoholic drinks can also help you stay hydrated. Tea (black, green, herbal etc), coffee (in small amounts), milk, sport/electrolyte drinks, fruit juices, and soda are all sources of water.

If possible you want to avoid having a high intake of fruit juices and fizzy drinks due to their high sugar content. And

while the alcohol is a staple part of most BBQs it won’t really hydrate you. This is because it has a diuretic effect, which means it increases urination resulting in you losing more water which increases the risk of dehydration. Therefore, for every alcoholic drink, have at least one glass of water to help replenish your water stores.

But it’s not all about liquids. Food can also be high in water with fruit and vegetables counting towards your water intake. In fact, about 20% of your water intake comes from food!

So how much water should you drink?

We have all enjoyed working with our students and everyone has had lots of fun.” The teachers at Horsham, based in East Street, are trained by the English Bridge Union.

RECIPE

WALNUT-STUFFED BAKED APPLES Preparation time: 20 minutes Cooking time: 30-40 minutes Servings: 4 INGREDIENTS 100g brown sugar 75g walnuts 50g golden raisins 60g unsalted butter, cut into small cubes 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves 4 large eating apples (Gala work well) 120ml fresh orange juice METHOD

reheat oven to 190C / Gas mark 5. In a small bowl, combine brown sugar, walnuts, raisins, butter, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg and cloves.

Slice about 1cm off the top of each apple. Use a

corer or a sharp knife to remove the core and seeds from inside of each apple but take care not to go all the way through. Arrange the apples, cavity side up, in a ceramic baking dish. Fill each cavity with 2 tablespoons of the brown sugar-walnut mixture.

Sprinkle remaining brown sugar-walnut mixture on top of apples. Pour the orange juice around apples.

Bake the apples for 30 to 40 minutes or until they are tender. Rotate the baking dish halfway through the cooking time. Spoon the juices in the dish over apples and serve warm with ice cream or creme fraiche.

Where is your shop located?

We are at 33 Carfax, Horsham RH12 1EE What is your business background?

Our lives prior to starting L&B were significantly different, and in great part were spent overseas.

In essence, Huw’s background was 30 years in Oil & Gas – 10 years working as a geologist on rigs and in operations management in the Far East followed by 20 years in Corporate Sales and Business Development. Caroline worked in IT and Management Support within the O&G Industry for 10 years before switching sectors to education.

She has remained and thrived in schooling environments for the past 15 years. We returned to the UK after 20 years in the Middle East and, while Caroline continued to work in schooling, Huw spent a year working in a garden centre, which is where he acquired retail experience.

How long have you been in business?

Lumley & B has been trading for one year now.

Why did you set up Lumley & B.?

For two main reasons – as an exciting and worthwhile way to head into eventual retirement and to try and do our bit to bring some character back to high streets. There are many fantastic independents out there who believe in quality, value and service but we are so often overshadowed by formulaic chain shops and giant online retailers that a stroll down any high street in the UK could be just that – anywhere in the UK. We are fiercely proud of our independence because we know what independence brings for shoppers – great quality,

We sell high quality Giftware & Homeware and Garden Furniture & Accessories. Approximately 90% of what we sell is British and we are proud that we have Scotland, Wales, Ireland and England represented in our range because each part brings its own unique touch to make a pleasing whole – much like the UK. What is your favourite item in the shop and why?

That’s like asking which of your kids do you prefer! We love them all because we have brilliant suppliers, but one of our favourites is a fabulous forge in Scotland who make candlesticks, log storage items, furniture and much more. Their work is a combination of incredible design coupled with consummate craftsmanship and each piece is hand-crafted. The

Our favourite product they make is definitely the Jacobean Log Ring – one of these generally has pride of place in our window and certainly causes people to pause and look. What is your USP? Our strengths are definitely a combination of independence, quality, choice, service, environmental responsibility and supporting British suppliers whenever possible. However, our USP is the style and taste of our chief buyer. Her ability to select products that people would like is uncanny.

What do you do in your free time?

Right now, there’s not a lot of that but we like to travel when we can, spend time with friends and family and explore West Sussex.

Best thing that's happened to you recently?

In business we get very excited when we are granted exclusivity by suppliers because we see it as an indicator that we are heading in the right direction – this has happened recently with three of our newer suppliers.

In life it would be seeing our children getting on well in their university education (one half way through and the other about to begin).

Favourite one liner or silliest thing you've ever overheard in the shop?

Huw: There’s 25% off that just now so it’s a bargain.

SAHARA TREK CHALLENGE

W

hen St Catherine's Hospice launched their latest supporter challenge of a 50km trek in the Sahara, Jackie Reader was quick to sign up. Jackie and Beverley Russell, having met years before as sopranos in Cantatrice Voices, the Horsham ladies' choir, went along to the information evening and were hooked.

The challenge will be tough, walking in heat and on unstable sand dunes. 'We'll be camping with the camels and their Berber leaders. But when I imagine the beauty of the clear night sky and the daytime dunes, I am so excited' says Beverley.

Both women have strong reasons to make the trek while supporting St Catherine's. Jackie will be following in the footsteps of her

grandparents and mother who themselves trekked from the UK across North Africa, eventually setting up home in Nairobi. Both Jackie's mother and grandmother died from cancer and she is delighted to support the work of St Catherine's in End of Life Care.
