DEVELOPMENT AT ROOKWOOD

H

ousing development in Horsham is becoming an increasingly thorny subject. On page 12 you can read about the ‘Keep Rookwood Green Aliance’ (KRGA) that has been recently formed in response to the proposal to build 1,100 dwellings at Rookwood Golf Course, one of the ‘strategic sites’ in the Local Plan consultation. The KRGA believe that the Rookwood site should be retained as a green space to provide leisure and recreational opportunities for both the local community in Horsham town and those from further afield. The KRGA argue this proposal threatens Warnham Local Nature Reserve, which is adjacent to Rookwood, through noise and light pollution, increased predation by cats and by severing the Reserve’s wildlife corridors to the

west. It would be isolated within urban development and argue it will axe a popular amenity, destroy a valued green space and damage one of the most bio-diverse sites in Sussex. KRGA are urging residents to sign their petition and write to your local councillor by visiting www.keeprookwoodgreen.org Clearly any proposed development will divide opinions with the need for housing being weighed against the need to protect the countryside and prevent the ever increasing strain on services. any families in Horsham District face a financial crisis according to local debt advice charity Horsham Debt Advice Service. In the last year Horsham Debt Advice Service (HDAS) have helped many local individuals and families struggling with debt. Family budgets are often extremely tight, and it is amazingly easy to find debts spiral out of control, particularly when family circumstances change. They are currently assisting their clients with £1,800,000 of debts. Due to the current Covid-19 pandemic they are now also in a situation when their income is insufficient to fund their activities throughout 2020. This universal crisis is impacting their charitable work. Many of their vulnerable clients who were already facing considerable financial stress before the corona virus pandemic are now likely to find

their incomes and work opportunities considerably reduced. This will make it much harder for them to cope with the burden of un-payable debts and the need for support increases. The charity’s support can enable their clients to resolve their debt problems over time thus avoiding a range of adverse outcomes such as eviction, homelessness, the exacerbation of mental health conditions and even, in extreme cases, imprisonment due to non-payment of priority debts such as council tax. However, HDAS cannot assist their clients if they cannot pay their own basic running costs. ELECTRIFICATION OF THE RAILWAY Jeremy Knight from Horsham Museum & Art Gallery has written this article on how the trains were electrified and the impact it had on Horsham

T

oday we take electric trains for granted. In fact it is a bit of a shock to find, when travelling north, that the trains are still diesel as the line to Horsham has been electric for over 80 years. It is equally remarkable that such a large investment was made in electrifying the railway in the years following the Great Depression. However, electrification went hand in hand with the growing housing market, and the expansion of the entire electric grid, as electricity began to power industry and not be used simply for lighting. In effect the electrification of the railways provided the core infrastructure for commuters in a distinct contrast to today’s ever expanding road network. As accounts of the day show, electrification wasn’t straightforward, and did take some time to reach fruition. The whole question of electrification was not as simple as an outsider would imagine. For a start, what method do you use; the third line, or overhead cables? Overhead cables were safer for maintenance workers who might stumble on the

track, and reduced the risk of conductor rail icing up and breaking the contact. However, the third rail was a lot cheaper and a lot of the South Eastern rail network had been built cheaply and as such many tunnels and road bridges didn’t have the headroom to take the overhead wiring. “The third-rail system therefore had the advantage that it could be applied throughout the Southern Railway and, since it was cheaper and simpler to fit” therefore, it was adopted. One of the first lines to be electrified was Waterloo to Guilford and Dorking, which was completed in 1925. There was then a 12 year hiatus before the line was electrified to Horsham and beyond. But why change to electrically powered railways? After all this was not an era of green thinking. Electrification “allowed for much faster acceleration and breaking, which meant that capacity on the railway could be greatly increased and trains could call at more stops within the same timetable”. In addition every line that was

electrified saw passenger numbers increase. Electrification generated jobs, so much so that, in 1931, the Government thought of introducing it nationally. Unfortunately the cost of £261m was considered too expensive even though it was thought to generate a 7% return. It is not surprising then that the Horsham looked forward to the announcement of electrification, and when it came it was covered in full in the local press. However, whilst the electrification of the track was essential, what grabbed local imaginations was the rebuilding of the railway station. In December 1937 the County Times ran an article under the heading “£100,000 Railway Station for Horsham”, which went in to some interesting detail: “The building of Horsham’s new railway station which will be one of the most important events in the history of the town during the New Year is to cost about £100,000. It is hoped to have it erected by next December, four months after the completion of the electrification of the lines from London to Portsmouth, via Horsham. Involving 76 route miles, the electrification scheme is costing the company nearly £3,000,000” The newspaper went on to describe, in glowing terms, that: “Everything will be on the most modern lines, pleasing to everyone…the front of the station will face the center of the town instead of the junction Please mention HORSHAM PAGES North when responding to adverts

of North-Street and Hurst road as it does at present…there will be a commodious hall and larger booking office, with the approach to the platforms behind, and these platforms will be like a one sided then two long, broad islands. The platforms between the lines will be approached by a bridge with stairways, instead of the present subway, and there will also be an entrance, as formerly from Station Road. On each platform, waiting rooms, restaurants and convenience will be provided.” When, in May 1938, the first electric train arrived in Horsham the local paper covered it in great detail, and with much excitement. The train arrived at Horsham at 10.17am, it then: “was run on to all the sidings on the east side of the station, and then the up line to Three Bridges was tested. A second run was made to Horsham and this time the train ran on to the other down line platform….After a short halt at Amberley the train returned to Horsham and then went on to Warnham up line. At Warnham it returned to Horsham, then to Amberley again, returning to Warnham, back to Horsham and then to Three Bridges. The train was watched by many people in houses cottages and fields, as it passed, sometimes at 50mpoh or 60mph…During the week residents along the newly electrified line have seen several electric trains running between Three Bridges and CONTINUED ON PAGE 20

It’s not been easy but as usual in life, there are always lessons to be learned... 1. We really miss our guests... Keeping in touch and hearing your stories has been brilliant. 2. Team meetings on Zoom are hilarious... One of our team spent his entire time knitting squares as we discussed salon business. 3. Closed for business, open for learning... I’ve invested a lot of time in learning and gathering inspiration and really looking forward to using this new knowledge to improve the salon. 4. Social Media fun... We’ve always used Social Media, but being able to support our guests with funny and informative videos has been a great way to keep in touch. 5. Podcasts are a great distraction... Find recommendations on my blog. 6. I’ve become a walking hair guru... It’s nice to be popular outside the salon! 7. Family is everything... Being away from family and friends has been tough especially as major events have been cancelled, postponed or radically changed.

The coronavirus lockdown is very quickly draining Club financial reserves and, without your donations (which will go towards vital running costs including utility bills, rent and insurance) The Holbrook Club will not survive the pandemic. saucepan and heat until it almost reaches boiling point. Pour this coconut milk mixture in a slow stream over the egg yolks and sugar, whisking constantly. Rinse out the saucepan (important to stop any burning and tainting of the ice cream) and return to a low heat. Pour in the custard mixture and stir in the desiccated coconut. Continue to stir constantly for 5-10 mins until the custard thickens slightly and you can trace a line through it with a wooden spoon. Pour into a bowl and cover the surface of the custard with cling film...to prevent a skin forming), allow to cool, then chill for 30 mins. At this point you can use your ice cream maker according to the manufacturer's instructions. If you don't have an ice cream maker transfer the chilled custard to a small freezer-safe container with a lid and freeze for 1 hr, then use a fork or electric whisk to really churn through the ice cream to break up the ice crystals so that the mixture is the same consistency all the way through. Pop it back into the freezer for another 2-3 hrs, whisking it about every half hour, then cover the surface with a sheet of cling film and freeze with the lid on until as firm as ice cream. Take out of the freezer 10 mins before serving so it’s easy to scoop.

Some of these cases will have been chronically itchy and this more often than not is due to a condition called atopy, which means the animal has an allergy to either fleas, food or environmental allergens such as pollen. It can be an incredibly frustrating disease for owners, vets and pets, but with a little patience can have a very successful outcome. It is not unusual for an animal to have allergies to more than one thing. These allergens may ‘add up’ and cause worsening of signs. Treatment of atopy is divided in to 6 main areas. 1. Flea control—allergic animals only need 1 bite to set them off itching. 2. Control of house dust/storage mites—this includes frequent vacuuming using a hoover with a special micro filter to trap the mites and stop them dispersing around, avoid contact with dirty washing/washing baskets and wiping their faces after eating to remove the dusty material associated with dry food. 3. Control of pollens—very difficult but you may find some areas are less pollenated and washing your dog after a walk may help. 4. Drug therapy—including steroids, oclacitinib, cyclosporine, antihistamines, essential fatty acids, antibiotics and medicated shampoos. 5. Immunotherapy—an injectable therapy involving formulation with the allergens involved. 6. Elimination diets. The most important thing to remember is that it is often a combination of the above that is required for best control. t Catherine’s Hospice is asking people in their community to step up this summer and make sure local terminally ill people can continue to have hospice care during these difficult times and beyond. The local charity is asking people to walk, jog, run or climb a distance or height to raise vital funds, so no one faces death and loss alone. Popular events like the charity’s annual Midnight Walk, aren’t possible at the moment causing a severe shortfall in funding. Step Up is a great opportunity to help St Catherine’s, and our support has never been more vital than now. Choose your own, personal challenge, or take on one that St Catherine’s suggests, and help your local hospice be there for others in your community.
