COMMENT

D-DAY FOR INCINERATOR FIGHT

O

n page 12 you can read all about the long awaited public enquiry into the building of an incinerator at the former Wealden Brickworks. No Incinerator 4 Horsham (Ni4H) have worked tirelessly building a case for dismissing the appeal with a large number of fund raising events during October. North Horsham Parish Council has supported the case (see page 10) by raising concerns about the detrimental effect the incinerator on the former brickworks on Langhurstwood Road would have on the landscape, the traffic and the nearby residential development. The appeal starts on Tuesday 29 October and is expected to continue for 12 days over 3 weeks (excluding Mondays) at Horsham Sports Club, Cricketfield Road, Horsham, RH12 1TE. Members of the public are welcome to observe, request to speak

for a few minutes representing themselves, someone else or an organisation. To assist the Inspector, Ni4H is collating names of local residents and organisations who wish to speak at the Inquiry. The Inspector is considering an evening session for those unable to otherwise attend. So do contact Ni4H if you are prepared to do a 3-minute talk about your views at the inquiry. Or failing that, on page 67 of the What’s On pages you can find out about attending ‘Rock Off 2’ on 22nd November at Warnham Comrades Club to raise much needed funds for the campaign. Ni4H has galvanised a huge community effort to fight the incinerator and they need all your help and support now that ‘D-Day’ has arrived. Richard Milbourn, Editor E: editor@horshampublications.com

ith climate change in the news daily, heatwaves, the hottest July date ever recorded, wettest August and now the Amazon ablaze, who would blame people to despair. Help is at hand to Horsham District residents, on the first Saturday of every month at the Horsham Repair Café. Not only do the volunteers offer repairs, refills and recycling advice but they give clean energy advice and switching and climate change solutions. Governments have been talking about climate change since the early 90s, it is only now in 2019 that we are seeing fast escalating action, with more than half the UK’s principal local authorities having declared a climate emergency in the last eight months. The Horsham Repair Café run by Sussex Green Living with the help of the Horsham Quakers and lots of volunteers are stepping up to this climate crisis. Carrie the co-founder of the Horsham Repair Café and founder of Sussex Green Living says “Switching to clean energy is part of the solution within everyone’s grasp and is the biggest action anyone can take in the fight against climate change”. At the Repair Café she helps people switch to clean energy providers at the Repair Café. She adds “Everyone (bar one household) I have helped to switch has saved between £90 and £366 in their first year. So surely it is a no brainer to change”. Catherine Edminson one of the volunteers added “What many people do not realise is wind turbines and solar farms, as well as power stations all feed their energy into the National Grid, like rivers running into a big pond. When you switch to clean energy, your supplier guarantees that however much electricity you take out of the ‘pond’, the same amount of clean energy will be put in”. In just 5 minutes you can see a cost comparison with eight clean renewable energy by visiting https://bigcleanswitch.org/SussexGreen.

People can do this from the comfort of their home or if make an appointment at the Horsham Repair Café, taking a recent energy bill and you will be helped through the process. HORSHAM DISTRICT COUNCIL

PIRIES PLACE CAR PARK NOW OPEN

H

New Piries Place car park declared open by HDC Chairman Cllr Kate Rowbottom.

orsham District Council was delighted to announce the opening of its new Horsham Town Centre car park at Piries Place on Wednesday 9 October. The new five-level multi-storey car park is larger than the previous car park and has 516 spaces, 189 more than previously, which have both wider and deeper bays than before. There are 12 disability bays, 11 parent and child bays and eight electric vehicle charging bays. New toilets and a full Changing Places facility are also new features. The 14.5 metre high “living wall” is the car park's most iconic feature. The design is based upon the form of a tree and reflects the tree designs in the metal screens along the sides of the car park. The plants living on the wall will increase biodiversity in the area acting as a place for insects and wildlife to live. They will also provide several environmental benefits including the absorption and capture of air pollution, particulate matter and carbon dioxide. The new car park is positioned alongside Horsham’s recently completed multimillion pound Piries Place redevelopment which has transformed the area. Piries Place is now a vibrant and important town centre location for both day time and evening visitors. The regeneration has created a high quality shopping and leisure offer for residents, visitors and businesses which enhances the existing town centre with the development of a new three screen

Everyman cinema, a 92-bed Premier Inn hotel and a range of new restaurant and retail outlets. As parking demand is set to grow in the town centre in the coming years, Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for the Local Economy Cllr Paul Clarke said: “I am delighted that we are now in a position to accommodate future parking demand with the opening of this new larger and more modern car park. “This considerable investment by the Council is great news for the town centre on many fronts. “Improving the overall motorist experience was at the centre of the decision to refurbish the existing car park and this new parking facility greatly enhances both access and overall usability for everyone. “We fully expect that the opening of the car park will give a real boost for local businesses, particularly those in the Piries Place and East Street areas and we thank local traders and shoppers for bearing with us during the construction phase of the car park. “We are also committed to making Horsham a clean, green, sustainable and successful town. The “living wall” is an exciting way to make our public spaces more attractive whilst at the same time having a beneficial effect on the environment. Investing in greening projects like this will play an important part in safeguarding our local environment for future generations.”

LEGAL ADVICE

PRESERVING FAMILY WEALTH

M

ost couples hope that their estate will pass to their children and grandchildren eventually. But for many this will not happen, unless careful arrangements have been made to protect their assets from being taken towards the end of their life to pay care home fees. To help protect a couple’s estate, the solution may be a Will incorporating a Trust. A testamentary Trust can only be executed whilst both partners remain alive. Upon death of one partner, their Will specifies that their share of the estate is placed in Trust and names the ultimate beneficiary of this share, normally the children and grandchildren. But under the terms of the Trust the surviving partner has the unequivocal right to remain living in the property and to enjoy the other assets, for the rest of

Please mention HORSHAM PAGES North when responding to adverts

their life. On the death of the other partner the Trust comes to an end and the estate passes to the beneficiaries. As the surviving partner does not own the deceased's share of the estate it is fully protected for the beneficiaries, so if the surviving partner requires care, or even remarries, this share of the beneficiary's inheritance is protected. If the surviving partner wants to move they can still sell the property and the proceeds be used to purchase a new property; the terms of the trust remain over the new property. Westminster Law assesses the circumstances of couples and arranges the trust that will provide the best protection for them, their family and their assets. KITCHENS

KITCHEN RENOVATION ADVICE Alexander have been designing and installing stunning kitchens, bathrooms and bedrooms since 1976. With showrooms in Horsham and Worthing they are ideally located for renovations in the West Sussex area.

F

or this edition we’ve caught up with Alexander managing director Phil Beechinor who has over 35 years industry experience. Phil (pictured right) has shared with us some of the most frequently asked questions for anyone considering a kitchen renovation. Do you offer a complete service? At Alexander we offer a free design and quotation service with one of our experienced designers who will also visit you at your home. They will discuss with you your personal requirements and preferences before presenting you with a 3D design and fully itemised quotation. This will include all ancillary work and installation to be carried out by our fully employed installation and project management teams. How much do your kitchens cost? Obviously clients have varying budgets for their projects. At Alexander we can usually come up with a package to suit most budgets, although we usually suggest that 5% of the value of your home is a suitable figure. This of course is dependent on the appliances chosen, number of units, worktop choice and installation. What about the quality of your kitchens? All our British and German kitchens are rigid built and made from the best quality materials and offer comprehensive guarantees. When complemented with durable German appliances and accessories you can be sure that your kitchen will stand the test of time. What is on trend at the moment? A really popular concept at the moment is handleless kitchens. There is a huge variety of

24

NOV/DEC 2019

door colours, textures as well as different handrail colours to complement different shades. For an ultra-modern look add quartz worktops, vibrant glass splashbacks and the latest specification of appliances and storage solutions. What is the most important thing for customers to remember when buying a new kitchen? Go to an independent kitchen retailer instead of a larger national company. Independent retailers are certainly more customer focused and offer a better service as their reputation depends upon it. They can also be more price competitive than you think as well as offering a better service, employing local tradesmen and offering more choice. If you require further information regarding a kitchen renovation visit one of their showrooms in either Horsham or Worthing. Call 01403 721086 or visit www.alexanderhorsham.co.uk

HORSHAM LIONS CLUB

SWIMARATHON SUPPORTS CHARITY

H

orsham Lions Club biggest annual event, the Swimarathon, will be the ninth next year to be run at The Pavilions in the Park Leisure Centre. Over the last eight years the Swimarathon has raised over £56,000 which has been donated to a number of local schools, organisations and charities. The 2020 Swimarathon takes place on Sunday 15th March 2020 starting at 12 noon and the closing date for entries is 3rd February 2020. In 2017 and 2018 the event supported Chestnut Tree House Children’s Hospice which provides a wide range of services for children with life-shortening conditions and their families. Over the last two years the event has raised an amazing £18,192.29 for the hospice. In 2019, the Swimarathon suported Jigsaw Trust which provides specialist education and support for children and adults with autism, based on Dunsfold Park in Surrey. The aims of Jigsaw Trust are to improve the lives of those affected by an autism spectrum disorder and to promote a greater knowledge and understanding of autism. The event raise £5,500 was used to refurbish the childrens play area. In 2020 the Swimarathon is supporting Horsham Matters which is a small charity making a big impact on the local community in Horsham. Formed in 2006, Horsham Matters works to relieve hardship through the provision of essential services (food, fuel, shelter) in order to make a positive, long-lasting impact on people’s lives.

26

NOV/DEC 2019

Crucial to this support in the community is providing emergency food for individuals and families through the Horsham District Foodbank and running the Horsham Night Shelter which provides homeless people with a bed and food for the winter months. Along with these services, the charity provides starter furniture for single people and couples being housed into accommodation with no possessions. Horsham Matters would like to develop a Community Hub, in which we will work together with other organisations and partner agencies to provide a ‘one stop shop’ for vulnerable residents. Part of this vision includes The Hub Café, where those that can pay do so and those that are facing financial difficulties are subsidised or eat free. The money which is raised through the Horsham Lions Club Swimarathon 2020 will go towards setting up this café and will contribute to creating a strong, safe and healthy community. Horsham Lions Club will be donating the majority of its share of monies raised from the 2020 Swimarathon and the remaining balance will be used for helping local good causes supported by Horsham Lions Club. The amount donated will include, tax recovered under Gift Aid. Swimarathon teams can consist of people aged eight to 70 upwards: • The team can include up to six swimmers plus an adult non-swimming team captain. • The first team member swims on length of the pool and then rests while the other members take turns to swim a length of 25 metres.

designate some screen-free time as a family.

Interestingly a recent study of 20,000 parents published by the Oxford Internet Institute and Cardiff University determined that there was no correlation between limiting device use and children’s wellbeing. Another study by the University of Michigan on children aged four to 11 similarly found that it was how children use devices, not how much time they spend on them, which is the strongest predictor of emotional or social problems connected with screen addiction. Although specific screen time limits are out of date, there is evidence that excessive use has negative impacts, affecting sleep, health and mood. Screen time, in and of itself, is not harmful – but reasonable restrictions vary greatly, depending on your child’s behaviour and personality. A useful strategy for parents is to ensure that what they’re watching, playing and reading is high-quality, age-appropriate and safe – and to join in wherever possible. Balancing the online and offline world seems to be key, and that may vary greatly from family to family. Research shows that not having access to the digital world has a negative impact on kids too – so it’s all about finding the right amount for your family, with an holistic approach. There’s a lot to be said for knowing your child and using your common sense!

ndigo provides accountancy and taxation advice and support for individuals and small to midsized businesses from all industries, from all over the Teresa Noon. UK and even abroad, but they are perhaps best-known for the specialist service they offer for clients working within the entertainment industry. The firm was born with a view to moving accounting away from the formal and business-like and making it more approachable. Managing director and founder Teresa Noon recognised a need for a transparent, clear and jargon-free accounting service for everyone in business, including those that generally had a limited interest in numbers and figures, but whose financial success in their chosen field required that they kept on top of their accounts. From the get-go, Indigo flipped traditional accountancy on its head and, as a practice that has always been ready to embrace technology, Indigo is eager and ready to welcome the new ‘Making Tax Digital for Vat’ initiative, having been diligently establishing processes ahead-of-the-curve in preparation for the changes it will bring, to ensure a seamless transition for their clients. Indigo has increased their focus on cloudbased software and apps and have undertaken extensive training to become experts in their chosen system, Kashflow, who have rewarded their efforts by awarding them Gold Partner status – Indigo is also involved in the Making Tax Digital for VAT pilot initiative between Kashflow and HMRC.

The combination of his seaside holiday location and a poem inspired Brahms to compose the beautiful Schicksalslied (‘Song of Destiny’) but it took three years before he found the perfect ending. It is considered to be amongst Brahms’ best choral works. John Rutter’s Feel the Spirit is quite different in style, but this contemporary composer/conductor/producer gives a dynamic swing to the seven brilliant spirituals in this piece. Finally, Verdi. FROM TWICKENHAM TO TOKYO

A

fter more than 4 months, 8 countries and 7,200 miles, intrepid cyclist and triple cancer survivor Patrick McIntosh has arrived home to Surrey on 1st October following his epic Lifecycle challenge. Patrick (pictured right) set himself the ultimate test of endurance, cycling from Twickenham to Tokyo in time for the opening game of the Rugby World Cup on 20 September to raise money to build a new home for his local hospice. So far, Patrick has raised over £50,000, with this being split between St Catherine’s Hospice and World Cancer Research. The total is expected to climb as further pledges are fulfilled. The 62-year-old has survived bowel, prostate and skin cancer and is now determined to raise awareness of the fight against cancer. In May, Patrick set off from St Catherine’s Hospice in Malthouse Road, cycling towards Pease Pottage, which will be the site of a new, larger hospice building in years to come. From there he headed to Twickenham Stadium before cycling across Europe. As June approached, Patrick began a successful attempt to cross Russia in 90 days, following the historic line of the trans-siberian railway and finally arriving by ferry in southern Japan to cycle the final 1000km to reach Tokyo on 18 September. Talking about the ride, Patrick said: “I am delighted to have reached Tokyo. It’s been a bit hairy at times but I’ve beaten three cancers and had major surgery. So I was jolly well going to get to Tokyo come hell or high water. I am proud to have been able to do this and prove what’s possible after cancer.” Generally physically I’ve been absolutely amazed by how well my body kept up. I think the more challenging thing was the mental side of it. Having to get up whether it’s raining or boiling hot and cycle another 70 to 100 miles a day. It was really difficult. But it was fantastic seeing all the different

cultures as we were riding up through Europe and into Russia, seeing the different parts and being greeted by people was absolutely fabulous. It’s an honour to support St Catherine’s as part of my big adventure. As a cancer survivor I know the importance of their vital care. And I want more people to be able to have hospice care in the future so I’m raising money for St Catherine’s new larger hospice. When you’re seriously ill you need all the support you can get. Having the support of St Catherine’s expert nurses, doctors and wider teams really helps people to stay positive and live well for as long as they can. Staying positive and living well were things I found crucial to my own survival. Despite being told the most depressing news I tried not to let it get me down and believed that I could still make the most of life. Now I hope I’ll inspire and motivate others to do the same.” Along the way, Patrick has been supported by a myriad of people, including Glenn Fisher who drove his support vehicle and his neighbour, Dame Judi Dench, who met with Patrick to wish him good luck before he left and to give him a lucky charm in the form of a silver four-leaved clover, which Patrick had attached to his bicycle throughout his Lifecycle. BOOK REVIEW

HORSHAM DISTRICT IN 100 OBJECTS

A

land of castles, lakes and a dragon demands an amazing book to tell its story. And that is what has been crafted. Using over 230 photographs and 100,000 words, The Heritage of Horsham District in 100 objects, explores and celebrates the land that lies between Gatwick and Brighton. Using 100 objects as signposts, the book by Horsham Museum Curator Jeremy Knight and edited by Michael Burt, Chairman of the Horsham District Heritage Forum, draws on objects put forward by the Forum to tell a 100 million year old story through 13 themes and so creates a real eye opener. Very few towns in the world have a dinosaur named after it, but Horsham does, the Horshamosaurus, so that became object 1 in the list of 100. But then the story explored the telling of the other dinosaur finds in the District including the Great Horsham Iguanodon,(no 2) the inspiration for the Crystal Palace/Sydenham Park Victorian creation. However, the biggest surprise was the discovery made by the Horsham Archaeological Group of a Mural Crown Pot, (no 8) not well known in the world of Roman archaeology, but an amazing pot that combines both Roman architectural prowess and religious beliefs. This complements the Wiggonholt water cistern or water tank (no 9) bearing the Christian symbol, now on display at Parham House, which itself is one of the 100 objects. One decision made early on was that the objects did not have to be small, portable affairs, but could be man-made structures. Therefore, the Wey and Arun canal that pops in and out of the District features as no 17 in the 100 objects. The creation of a waterway from London to Portsmouth to avoid the French fleet during the Napoleonic Wars made a fascinating story and the fact that today the heritage item has been “re-purposed” as a leisure resource, provides an added

38

NOV/DEC 2019

dimension. The canal did not feature in the Transport chapter, but in Warfare along with the cannons (no 16) that were the gateposts to the Napoleonic military depot in Horsham. Obviously in a land of castles, lakes and a dragon, the castles of Knepp (14) and Bramber (13) are included, Bramber being the most prominent, Knepp, because of its military history, the stone of part of which was used to build the A24 which is another interesting story. Some stories are poignant, covering themes which resonate with the world today; such as the posters for the abolition of slavery (33), over 200 years old and yet still a contemporary issue; back then as an emotive a subject as Brexit is today. Last year the nation marked Women’s Suffrage, which was celebrated in Henfield with two mosaics; they feature in the book at number 36 along with the barely known stories of Henfield ladies’ involvement in the movement, a story that involved an American actress who settled in Henfield and entertained noted guests, as shown in the Backsettown Visitor book (37). The book, published by Horsham Museum as part of the Horsham District Council’s Year of Culture, also covers themes such as Work, from the Wealden iron firebacks (no 63) which act as a signpost to tell the heritage of the iron industry, to a poster for Walter Wood’s mower (67), a paper record of an important local industry, whilst the Patriot Engineers, a Horsham based company, established only for the duration of WWII is recorded through a commemorative brochure (68).

BOOK REVIEW

As opposed to work, the chapter on Play includes cricket, the sport of the District, with over a 300 year old legacy from the earliest known local match recorded in 1719 at Henfield; the story of cricket is highlighted by an unusual shop sign (pictured right) , a set of cricket stumps (82). Its ancestor, stoolball is illustrated with a rare postcard (83) of an early 20th century match at Cowfold, and football a photograph of an amateur side, Carfax United (pictured left) from 1902-3 (84). The sport that died out, bull baiting, which in Horsham went out of fashion in 1813 is recounted using the bull ring (87). Agriculture has always been a feature of the District’s life. Therefore, from Bramber the book includes a charming portrait of George Bailey (61), whose life story stands for the life of the shepherd and farmworker. From Cowfold Capons Farm ( 55) is used to illustrate the yeoman farmer, while the Tithe Barn from Sullington Manor (57) illustrates another aspect of agricultural and farming life.

The Heritage of Horsham District in 100 Objects is a culmination of over 30 years working with the District’s heritage. It is a fascinating account and will hopefully encourage people to discover more about the area they live or work in. The book is available from 8 October from local bookshops and from Horsham Museum & Art Gallery priced £19.99. Horsham Museum is open Monday-Saturday 10am – 5pm. Admission is free.

HOW DOES COLOUR AFFECT YOU?

D

o you tend to always wear the same safe colours? You could be missing out on making yourself feel great! We are heavily influenced by the psychology of colour too. For example, Green strikes the eye in a way that requires no adjustment and is, therefore, restful. Using shades of green in bedrooms will aid sleep and calmness. It is the colour of balance. Orange is stimulating - it focuses our minds on issues of physical comfort – food, warmth etc, and sensuality. It’s fun! Whereas Blue is the colour of the mind and is essentially soothing; it affects us mentally, rather than physically as red does. Strong blues will stimulate clear thought and lighter soft blues will calm the mind and aid concentration. Not only do the colours we wear effect how we look and feel, but how others perceive us. The colours we like they may not necessarily be those that suit us. Colour analysis determines which colours of clothing and makeup harmonise with a person’s skin complexion, eye and hair colour. Colour is a clever way to instantly transform your look positively. Wearing shades that harmonise and balance with your natural colouring, will add radiance to your skin, making you look younger, fresher and healthier. Knowing your colours when shopping will save time and money too!. You’ll be able to build a wardrobe of outfits you love, always ensuring you can easily mix and match, and look your best! CONFESSIONS OF A HUSBAND...

I

’ve known (and loved) Mandy for 17 years next May. In

that time I’ve learned a lot about the wonderful world of hairdressing (amongst other things). I confess that prior to our meeting I suspect, like most men, I had a pretty fixed view of the world of female hairdressing which was based largely around “archetypal” discussions around holidays, failing men and yo-yo dieting. Wrong! So, my wife cuts hair for a living - but the truth of the matter is that this occupies only some of her time in the salon - she is in parts a psychologist, mother, counsellor, carer, life coach, mediator, teacher, confidant and friend. Invariably after a day in the salon, she’ll arrive home with the emotion of the day writ large on her lovely face. These emotions range from the extraordinary feeling of helping someone restore their dignity whilst recovering from cancer to the joy of nurturing young talent as they emerge from shy apprentices to confident stylists. It turns out that hairdressing performs a very wide range of functions for guests and my eyes have been opened not just by the technical skill involved in cutting, styling and colouring hair, but how vital the relationship between hairdresser and guest can be in terms of emotional support. As one of her clients once said to me in town, “a session with Mandy should be prescribed on the NHS!”. So gentlemen, when your wife/husband/lover/best friend takes her/his next trip to the salon, remember it’s not just about looking good, it’s about feeling better. Local man, Bob Phillips remembers the excitement as a young lad of watching the bustling activities of this temporary airfield as it went about its vital business supporting the Allied invasion of France. Bob still lives on the edge of what was the airfield, and when one of his oak trees was brought down in the great storm of 1997 he stored the timber, donating recently the very last two planks to the Shipley Men's Shed . From this oak, the Shedders have now fashioned a rustic bench which has been placed next to the fifteen oak trees and facing south across the airfield towards the Normandy landing grounds. Walkers and visitors may now sit in quiet contemplation at this tranquil spot and take in the beautiful Sussex countryside. Richard Harris is a Trustee of the Horsham and Shipley Community Project which includes, among many activities, the Shipley Men's Shed. “We wanted to create a resting place for walkers to read the information board and then take a moment. And when Bob came forward with this timber from one of only a few oak trees that survived the construction of the airfield, we had to use it. I wish to thank Bob for the timber and

VAT EXCEPTION nrbpqflkW=

I

have been trading as a contract cleaning company since July 2018. My company breached the VAT registration limit early this month. Unfortunately, I have some health problems and will be looking to sell the business at the beginning of 2020. Does the company still need to VAT register, knowing that the turnover will be below the deregistration limit in the next 12 months? I seem to recall that HMRC will accept this as a basis for not registering. ^kptboW

T

he policy you are thinking about is known as exception from registration. HMRC have discretion to except a business from VAT registration but only if the business can demonstrate that: • taxable turnover has exceeded the VAT registration limit under the backward test (85k of sales in the last 12 months) rather than the forward test (85k of sales in the next 30 days), and • at the time of exceeding, that there are reasons why the turnover will drop below the deregistration limit (currently £83K) in the next 12 months. Further information regarding exception from VAT registration and details on how to apply can be found in the Revenue manuals, try searching the internet for vatreg19000. HMRC’s policy regarding exceptions from VAT registration is to apply the general deregistration rules held within paragraph 4(1) Schedule 1 VAT Act 1994 (paraphrased here):

48

NOV/DEC 2019

• a person who has become liable to be VAT registered shall cease to be so liable if the Commissioners are satisfied that the value of his taxable supplies in the 12 months ahead will not exceed £83k. • the above exception will not apply in cases where taxable supplies cease or are suspended for 30 days or more. If your business is being sold as a company, trade will not cease and the business turnover would not then be affected by any health problem you might be experiencing. If you are trading as a sole trader, you might transfer the VAT registration to the new owner which again would mean trade is not ceasing. Alternatively, a sole trade business might cease at the point of business sale. However, cessation of trade is specifically mentioned above as not being eligible for an exception. Therefore, it is highly unlikely HMRC will agree an exception from VAT registration solely on the basis that you intend to sell the business, unless you can demonstrate a palpable downturn in turnover and that this will continue to be the case for the next 12 months. Tax Adept offers a range of services which are specifically designed to help you and your business. ST LEONARD’S CHURCH

CHURCH CELEBRATES 80TH BIRTHDAY

T

he congregation and friends of St Leonard’s Church, Cambridge Road gathered together recently to celebrate the church’s 80th birthday. Built in 1939, just as war was starting, St Leonard’s Church was, at the time, an innovative building, with the hall and church under one roof; it also has aspects of Art-Deco built into its design. Having been substantially refurbished in 2008, St Leonard’s is a thriving church, serving its local community. The hall is used by many community groups and individuals for a variety of activities – Indian and other dancing, indoor bowls, choir groups, a slimming group, keep fit, to name but a selection. Church services are attended by young and old, with a pattern of worship that caters for both families and those who like a more formal service. The service was led by the Team Vicar, Rev Natalie

Loveless, and the Rev David Evans (a friend of St Leonard’s and formerly Vicar of Nuthurst) gave an address. Two delightful girls from the Indian dancing class performed, a member of the congregation baked the cake and a longstanding member blew out the candles! Services are at 9.30am Sundays and all welcome. Details at www.stleonardshorsham.org.uk

COLOURFUL PLACES

017 saw Steyning based artist Sarah Duffield have a near sell out show of her bright, uplifting and unique take on the landscape that inspires her. Now two years later she returns to Horsham Museum & Art Gallery with stunning new work that reveals how Sarah continues to develop her pallet and craft. At the heart of the exhibition, Colourful Places are four views of Horsham district, drawn from conversations had with local people about their favourite scene. Commissioned by Horsham District Council as part of the Year of Culture, the paintings are the culmination of months of work, and importantly, a first, the exhibition will focus on the steps Sarah took in creating the modern masterpieces. So as well admiring the views of; Knepp Estate and Ruin, Chesworth Farm, view from Beeding Hill and the River Arun and Chalk Pit at Amberley, the visitor can get a feel of the creative processes, the pallet selection and what to include, or leave out. It adds a real depth and interest to an exhibition that will make you see Horsham district in another light. The four original views are the District are part of a larger exhibition where Sarah showcases her recent work including Into the Arboretum, Adur Sunset, Autumn Sentinels, paintings inspired by her travels across the heart of Sussex. In 2017 one of the surprises of the exhibition were the beautifully crafted charcoal drawings, the preparatory

sketches that stood in their own terms as works of art. Horsham Museum & Art Gallery are delighted that Sarah has agreed to display some of her drawings again, monochrome images as powerful and rewarding as her colourful masterpieces. The exhibition Colourful Places – The MultiColoured District is an opportunity to admire works by a highly talented artist who has created her own vision of the world around her. Knowing only too well how popular the four views of the District will be, a limited signed print of each of the view has been produced. These will be on sale along with original works of art, in an exhibition that is one of the highlights of Horsham District Year of Culture. Colourful Places - The Multi-Coloured District by Sarah Duffield, opens on Saturday 28 September and runs till 14 December 2019. Sarah is holding a meet the artist on 5th October at 12pm – 5pm at Horsham District Council’s Horsham Museum & Art Gallery. Horsham Museum & Art Gallery is open Monday- Saturday 10am – 5pm, free admission. www.horshammuseum.org.

hristmas is the perfect time of year to treat our pets but can also result in an increase in potential toxins around the house. Christmas plants like mistletoe and poinsettia can cause drooling, vomiting and diarrhoea if ingested and in large amounts, mistletoe may result in weakness, heart disturbances and seizures. Ensure these plants are kept out of reach of our furry friends. With lots of yummy food we can be tempted to overindulge our pets, however fatty foods can result in vomiting, diarrhoea or even pancreatitis. Chocolate contains theobromine, a chemical similar to caffeine, which stimulates the nervous system and can cause agitation, seizures and heart disturbances. Christmas cake or pudding containing raisins, currants and sultanas can result in kidney failure. The toxic mechanism is unknown but even very small quantities can be a problem. Macadamia nuts can cause vomiting, weakness and a high temperature but again the toxic mechanism is unknown. Our pets must not be allowed to scavenge these Christmas foods. As we all know, some animals will eat anything and gut obstruction as a result of consumption of tree and cake decorations, tinsel, wrapping ribbons, toys or cooked meat bones can result in the need for surgical removal. If you are concerned your pet has eaten anything discussed in this article, please contact your vet immediately. We wish you and your pets a very Merry Christmas! WINTER WARMTH _ó=gÉ~åÉííÉ=jÉêÅÉê

A

s days get darker and colder it’s tempting to huddle up, turn up the heating and hibernate until the winter is over. But that really is a waste, so here are some of our favourite ways to beat the winter blues. Make sure your home is efficiently heated. Being cold is miserable but sitting in t-shirts in December with the heating blazing is ridiculous. Check out the Energy Saving Trust website for tips on saving energy, money and reducing your carbon footprint. Their section on Thermostats and Controls is especially useful www.energysavingtrust.org.uk Modern heating controls, especially the digital kind you can operate from an app on your mobile, give you the ability to ‘tweak’ the heating in your home, allowing you to reduce the heat if it’s unseasonably warm, or you’re going away for a long weekend for example. Sleep soundly On a cold, grey winter’s morning getting out of bed is effort enough, but it’s even worse if you’ve had a bad night’s sleep. Overheated rooms affect quality of sleep, so a bedroom that is too warm is both wasting energy and affecting your ability to rest properly. According to The Sleep Council the ideal temperature is about 1618 degrees C. See their website for lots more tips on creating the best environment for sleep www.sleepcouncil.org.uk Snuggle up Winter months in the UK are not one consistent temperature, so flexibility is the key to getting the heat levels just right. Have an extra layer available for the bed for the coldest nights and try to buy good quality, sustainable products. You can now even get duvets filled with recycled plastic bottles, and having slept under one

58

recently and matching pillows, I can thoroughly recommend them! If you hunker down on an evening or weekend with a box set or the latest series on catch up, remember that you’ll tend to feel colder if you’re sitting still for a long time. Try to move around a bit (well someone has to get up and fetch the hot chocolate…) and treat your sofa to a cosy throw to avoid the temptation to turn up the heat. Get some fresh air Make the most of sunny winter days with a walk in the woods, local park or the beach. If you have a garden there are always things to do - just remember if you’re clearing up to leave plants and berries and seeds that wildlife might use for food. Get crafty Making and repairing things is a great way to beat the winter blues. Collect natural materials (and inspiration) on walks, Pinterest is full of ideas for simple artwork - you don’t need to be a great artist. Have a go at up-cycling an old piece of furniture or frame some of those holiday photos to cheer you up when it’s gloomy outside.
