CONNECTING THE TOWN

Y

ou’ll be excited to hear that for the first time, Horsham residents and businesses can get broadband connection speeds of up to one Gigabit (1000Mbps), which is among the fastest connection speeds available in the UK today. On page 10 there are details of Hey!Broadband’s launch of its full fibre broadband services in the second week of February 2020. Up until now, Horsham residents could only get broadband service over hybrid fibre-andcopper -based broadband, which meant slower speeds and dropped connections - especially during peak times. Full fibre, on the other hand, connects fibre from the exchange directly into homes and offices - and this makes a massive

difference in terms of speed and reliability. This long-awaited full fibre has been deployed by F&W Networks, a fibre infrastructure company. Its sister company, Hey!Broadband, sells broadband services on its network. Together, the companies plan to expand into other regions across the UK to bring full-fibre broadband to communities, as only 11% of homes in a few areas in the UK today have access to full fibre. Faster broadband at twenty-two times faster than the average broadband speed in the U.K. should help make Horsham a more attractive place for both businesses and residents which is good news for everyone. HEY!BROADBAND

GIGABIT BROADBAND HAS ARRIVED

F

or the first time, Horsham residents and businesses can get broadband connection speeds of up to one Gigabit (1000Mbps), which is among the fastest connection speeds available in the UK today. Hey!Broadband will launched its full fibre broadband services in the second week of February, 2020. The first deployment includes 5,000 premises in select areas near central Horsham, and other areas will be considered in the future. Up until now, Horsham residents could only get broadband service over hybrid fibre-and-copperbased broadband, which meant slower speeds and dropped connections - especially during peak times. Full fibre, on the other hand, connects fibre from the exchange directly into homes and offices - and this makes a massive difference in terms of speed and reliability. Hey!Broadband offers Gigabit internet speeds for both downloading and uploading - a whopping twenty-two times faster than the average broadband speed in the U.K. Now many Horsham residents can go beyond the limits of copper wire and upgrade their broadband to a full fibre connection, which is better suited to the needs of today’s households. It allows residents to connect several of the latest devices simultaneously- such as 4K TV and lowlatency HD games- and get full speed and no interruptions in service, even at peak times. Hey!Broadband also offers full fibre solutions for

10

APRIL/MAY 2020

businesses. In addition to Gigabit speed, they can have bespoke solutions including leased lines and enhanced SLAs (Service Level Agreements) to suit each business’s needs. Horsham Council’s Cabinet Member for the Local Economy, Cllr Paul Clarke said: “We welcome the news that some residents of Horsham will soon have an opportunity to benefit from gigabitcapable broadband. This is an exciting time and I am pleased we are getting on the front foot by discussing with suppliers how best to develop attractive commercial models to deliver better broadband coverage.” This long-awaited full fibre has been deployed by F&W Networks, a fibre infrastructure company. Its sister company, Hey!Broadband, sells broadband services on its network. Together, the companies plan to expand into other regions across the UK to bring full-fibre broadband to communities, as only 11% of homes in a few areas in the UK today have access to full fibre. Anyone who is interested in having the full fibre network deployed in their neighbourhood are encouraged to register their interest online on www.heybroadband.co.uk, or to call Hey!Broadband on 0808 168 1616 or alternatively email them at info@heyb.co.uk; doing so is free with no commitment to join. Those who register will be contacted as soon as there is any change to their coverage status.

uinea pigs can make great children’s pets so knowing how to choose the most suitable guinea pig for your family is very important. Guinea pigs are very sociable animals so should not be kept on their own. They can be kept in single sex groups, pairs (a male and female) or in a harem (one male with multiple females). It is wise to do a little research into where you are going to buy your guinea pig, most reputable breeders will be happy for you to visit the litter before buying and this opportunity can be used to see the mother and littermates together. It is also a good time to question the breeder on the health of the parents and the current feeding regimes. Things to look out for: • The guinea pig should be bright and alert with no discharge from the nose, the eyes or around the mouth. • The front teeth should be well opposed and not overgrown. • There should be no hair loss or dandruff. • Watch the guinea pigs walking around the cage, they should be interested and show no signs of limping. • The rear should be clean with no urine or faecal staining and the feet should be pink with no ulceration. • Check whether there is a returns policy and how long it lasts for. Once you have chosen your new guinea pig it is wise to bring him/her into the vets for a full check over and to answer any questions you may have. TENNIS

NEW TENNIS LEAGUE IN PARK

H

orsham District Council are working with national organisation Local Tennis Leagues Ltd (NTL) to launch an exciting new tennis league in Horsham Park this spring. The Local Tennis League concept is all about creating more opportunities for people to play a tennis match in their local park environment. The Council’s recently refurbished tennis courts in Horsham Park make the perfect venue for friendly, competitive tennis for local players. The new league is an ideal way for people to get back into tennis, enabling them to play singles matches with people of similar abilities. Every player who completes three matches by the midway point of any round of tennis will receive a free can of tennis balls and there is a prize for the winner of each group. Local adult players of all standards are warmly invited to join the new Horsham League. Horsham District Council’s Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture said: “Promoting good health and wellbeing is at the heart of what we do at the Council and new opportunities like this do much to support this. “It’s great to see our Sports Development team working so hard to create new programmes to encourage as many people as possible to get involved with something new, get active, and socialise with new people. “We have great tennis facilities in Horsham Park so let’s make the most of them.” The leagues are open to adults aged 18 and over.

14

APRIL/MAY 2020

They are mixed sex, singles leagues, so men and women play each other. If you would you like to play more singles or are looking for new people to play, the Horsham Tennis League is a great way to have some competitive fun. Please sign up by 30 March for the first league block starting in April (finishing late May). Players are organised into groups of a similar level and arrange their own matches at a mutually convenient time over eight weeks. Why not give it a go and see what a difference playing matches makes to your game. WEST SUSSEX COUNTY COUNCIL

NEW FIREFIGHTING TRAINING CENTRE

P

roposals for West Sussex’s first state-of-theart fire service learning and development centre and new 24-hour fire station have been revealed. West Sussex County Council is proposing the £21m development for land off the A24 at Highwood Mill, near Horsham. The 24-hour fire station will incorporate all the best practice around firefighters’ health and wellbeing, including designated ‘clean’, ‘transitional’ and ‘dirty’ areas for firefighters returning from incidents. The learning and development centre will include residential accommodation to deliver firefighter training. In addition to various training rooms used for digital simulations and assessments, three ancillary buildings will assist in the delivery of real-life scenarios: • combined training tower and breathing apparatus facility • realistic live fire training facility which will have zero emissions • recruit training • incident command training facility • road traffic collision training area • new facility has an emphasis on renewable energy sources, such as solar panels and air source heat pumps providing heating, in-line with the county council’s drive to become carbon neutral by 2030. Duncan Crow, Cabinet Member for the Fire and Rescue Service and Communities, said: “These are incredibly exciting plans. “It has long been our aspiration to build a stateof-the-art training facility for our firefighters and these will be among the best facilities in the UK. “It has also been a vision for more than a decade to create a new fire station for Horsham. These are ground-breaking plans being put forward by the County Council for West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service and I would encourage

18

people to come along to the public exhibition.” Following the public exhibition, a planning application will be submitted in the spring. HNW Architects are leading the design of the project and Willmott Dixon Construction have been appointed as the contractors to take forward the project.

FAIR SUCCESS

STEP OUT UNDER THE STARS IN MIDNIGHT WALK

M

ake 2020 the year you do something amazing! Go the extra mile and join St Catherine’s Hospice for its popular Midnight Walk on Saturday 6 June 2020. Last year around 1,000 people walked through Horsham to help St Catherine’s get a step closer to supporting more local terminally ill people and their families, at a time it’s needed most. This year, St Catherine’s needs you to step out under the stars, with your family, friends or colleagues, to make a difference to others in your community. The walk starts at Broadbridge Heath Leisure Centre, and if you can, why not go the extra mile and sign up to walk 20 miles for 2020? Or sign up for the 13 mile, 7 mile, or 2 mile family friendly route. Alongside supporting their local hospice, many people walk in memory of someone they love. Perhaps you have someone special you can walk in honour of? Maureen, whose daughter-in-law, Nicola, was cared for by St Catherine's, has taken part in several Midnight Walks in Nicola’s memory. She said: “I always have so much fun on the walk and whenever I cross the finish line I feel proud. Everyone cheers and congratulates you and it’s always a very poignant moment for me. I’d

20

APRIL/MAY 2020

encourage others to take part in the Midnight Walk because raising money for our wonderful, local hospice is very important.” Rose Wood, Events Fundraiser at St Catherine’s said: “Every year it’s humbling to see so many people join us at our Midnight Walk. It’s an inspiring night where people remember their loved ones, and challenge themselves to walk as many miles as possible, to raise as much money as possible. Every person has their own reason for walking but they’re united in wanting to make sure that hospice care is there for other people when it’s needed most. At the moment, St Catherine’s can only reach one in three people who need hospice care. By supporting our Midnight Walk, you’ll be making sure that in the future our hospice can help more people. Nobody should face death and loss alone, so we hope you’ll step out in 2020 for this very special evening.” Ready to step out? Sign up now at: www.stch.org.uk/midnightwalk or call St Catherine's Events Team on 01293 447355. Make sure you sign up by 5pm on Monday 20 April to receive an exclusive early bird entry rate of £15. Your entry fee include a free T-shirt, finisher's breakfast and medal.

HORSHAM DISTRICT LOCAL PLAN

CONSULTATION DEADLINE IMMINENT

H

orsham District Council is required by Government to provide for an unprecedented increase in the number of homes in the District. This is a huge challenge for the Council and it urges all residents to read the development options and have their say. The purpose of the Draft Local Plan is to guide future developments in the Horsham District until 2036. None of the sites in the draft Local Plan has been selected by the Council. The document looks at potential sites that have been put forward by developers and assessed by Horsham District Council for suitability. There are a number of potential sites listed in the document, but it is anticipated that only some of these will ultimately be allocated for development. The decisions of the Council on sites to be allocated will depend in part on the responses it receives during this consultation. The site assessments have been published so that residents can read about the possible options, see how they have been assessed and give their feedback. The public consultation on the Horsham District Draft Local Plan (Regulation 2018) is now open and ends at 5pm on 30 March 2020. Cllr Claire Vickers, Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for Planning commented, “Many thanks to all of you who have already given feedback on the draft Local Plan. “Our public consultation is now half way through and I urge everybody to continue to give us their feedback on the options put forward by developers. “I wish to emphasize that although potential sites are listed in the draft

22

APRIL/MAY 2020

consultation document, no choices have yet been made. The decisions of the Council on the sites to eventually be allocated will depend on the feedback we receive during this consultation. “The Local Plan will help ensure that any developments are in suitable locations, helping the crucial delivery of local job opportunities and are set out in the Plan with contributions from developers to provide community infrastructure and upgrade transport links. “Failure to produce a Local Plan will put these vital elements in jeopardy and leave us exposed to unacceptable developments in totally unsuitable locations which none of us want.” Details about the Local Plan review process and timetable is available online now, including a video introducing the Local Plan process. Supporting background documents will also be published on this website, including a Sustainability Appraisal (which considers what the environmental, social and economic effects would be) and an Infrastructure Delivery Plan (which considers what infrastructure will be needed to deliver growth). For more information and to have your say visit www.horsham.gov.uk/localplanreview All responses should be made on the official form and returned by 5pm on Monday 30 March 2020. Call 01403 215100. Copies of the Draft Local Plan can also be viewed at the Council offices, Parkside, Chart Way, Horsham, RH12 1RL (between 9 am and 5 pm on weekdays), and in all District libraries during normal opening hours. A copy of the Draft Local Plan has also been sent to every Parish Council in the District.

GARDEN VIEW

CONTAINER-GROWN FRUIT

A

pril is the perfect month for planting container-grown fruit trees and bushes. Even if your garden space is limited you can still grow fruit trees and bushes. You can even grow them in containers on a balcony. The trick is to read the label. Look for dwarf varieties that won’t grow too large for your pot or garden. It’s a good idea to buy self-fertile plants too, especially if you don’t live in an area where lots of people grow their own fruit. Even on a small plot buy the biggest pot you can fit into the available space. Bigger pots hold more compost, so they contain more food, more water and more space for strong root growth. Make sure the pot has drainage holes and cover the base with drainage material. Handy hint – if wind is a problem on your site use heavy material like broken crockery or stones to add weight, whereas if you will need to be able to move the pot easily use polystyrene chunks, which are very lightweight. Fill the container with a loam-based potting compost. Remove the tree or shrub from its original pot, spread the roots a little and plant it in the new container to the same depth. Water the compost well initially and then whenever the surface is dry. If you want to plant your fruit tree in the garden dig a hole as deep as the root system, and about three times the width. Place the plant into the hole and refill it. Then firming the soil with your foot. If the tree is in an exposed area you might need to stake it. Fruit is very easy to grow, and there are a huge variety of fruit trees or bushes to suit every garden size and aspect, so you’re bound to find the perfect plant for your space. Try:

24

APRIL/MAY 2020

Dwarf apple trees, which provide interest all year round as well as fruit in the autumn. Any of the currants. Blackcurrants are particularly nice. They are low maintenance and great in jams and pies. They like a sunny spot and plenty of water Raspberries are lovely. They fruit in summer and like a sheltered sunny spot. You buy raspberry canes rather than bushes. Look for a thorn-free variety. Blueberries grow really well and are great for growing in a container because they like acid soil and in a container, this is easy to provide. Look for ericaceous compost which you should keep moist because like most soft fruits they are quite thirsty plants. Collect rainwater for the purpose as blueberries are not keen on tap water. I like to grow strawberries in large hanging baskets to make the most of the space. They are easy to grow this way but make sure you keep them well fed with a high potash fertiliser as nutrients leach away from hanging baskets very easily. I protect all my container-grown soft fruit with netting my garden birds tend to view my patio display as a rolling all-season buffet laid on especially for their benefit. Happy gardening. HEALTH & WELLBEING

CONSTANTLY TIRED?

T

iredness and fatigue are fairly common nowadays. As we adopt a faster pace of life, we forget, or simply have no time to pause, rest and reflect. Constantly stretching ourselves to the limits can leave us fatigued, both mentally and physically. Here are some of the factors that can cause fatigue. Medical causes There is a vast number of medical conditions that can deplete energy, including anaemia, chronic fatigue syndrome/ME, diabetes, underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) and coeliac disease. Fatigue can also be present when you experience extreme thirst, a change in bowel habits or weight-loss. Lifestyle causes The way we live our lives is constantly changing as we adapt to the demands of the contemporary world. As a result, we can exacerbate or contribute to fatigue by: • Drinking too much caffeine (coffee, energy drinks etc) and alcohol • Working long hours/night shifts, or long commutes • Not exercising enough • Not sleeping well or long enough • Eating an unhealthy diet which can lead to nutritional deficiencies • Having little time to relax and recover • Experiencing chronic stress Psychological causes Depression and anxiety are often linked to tiredness. People who suffer with mental health problems may have trouble falling asleep and sleeping through the night, which may lead to exhaustion. Not eating enough can also add to the problem as can doing no physical activity.

28

APRIL/MAY 2020

Nutrition and tiredness Not eating the right type of food or getting the right nutrients can also cause you to feel tired. A nutritious diet can address underlying nutrient deficiencies and allow the body to restore health, but it’s important to remember that there isn’t a magic bullet nor one nutrient that will make us healthy. It’s all about balancing your meals so that you’re providing your body with everything it needs to function at its best. A nutritionist can provide expert advice and support to help you make safe and effective changes to your diet and lifestyle in order to combat tiredness. But here are a few things you can start applying today: • Avoid refined carbohydrates such as sweets, cakes, chocolates, sodas. Apart from calories, they provide you with little or no nutritional value. Refined carbohydrates disrupt your blood glucose levels, leaving you hungry, tired and irritable. Instead, opt for complex carbohydrates with high fibre content such as beans, lentils, whole grains, vegetables and fruit. • Caffeine is a stimulant so it can “give” you energy, but too much caffeine, especially on an empty stomach, can leave you tired, and it can also affect your sleep. • Dehydration is one of the main causes of tiredness, so have at least 6-8 glasses of water a day. Any medical conditions should be managed by your doctor, but it’s important to look at fatigue from a holistic perspective and address anything that can be lacking in terms of movement, sleep, relaxation, and of course, food. www.annapinnock.co.uk

DISASTER PREPPING

BE PREPARED...BUT DON’T PANIC

Z

ombie apocalypse movies are perennially popular. Human beings love to imagine how we might survive after a global disaster. Recent flooding and the coronavirus have prompted an interest in ‘prepping’, as in ‘prepping for disaster’. Preppers have historically been cast alongside conspiracy theorists, and American survivalists, who build bunkers, live ‘off-grid’ and are scarier than any imaginary zombie. As flooding and extreme weather become ‘normal’ events in the UK, and every year seems to bring a new pandemic threat it’s easy to see why people feel helpless, and why ‘prepping’ becomes seductive. Should we prepare for imminent disaster? The answer isn’t a straightforward yes or no. In this country we are fortunate that food is plentiful. However, food is supplied on a ‘just-in-time’ basis, using predictions based on the public’s past shopping habits. If everyone shops normally, supply and demand remain balanced, but if large numbers of people suddenly panic-buy more than usual to stockpile food, shelves are stripped bare pretty quickly. It makes sense to be aware of this and to think about how we might manage if there was a temporary hiccup in our own food supply chain, perhaps because poor weather or flooding prevents us from accessing shops, or because we’re confined to our home through illness or quarantine. It does no harm to plan how we might be more self-reliant for a week or so, and to make sure that we have a basic emergency store cupboard. I would advise against specialist emergency food packs you see advertised. They are expensive, and freezedried food tastes like garden mulch. A few

30

APRIL/MAY 2020

extra tins in your weekly shop is easy for most people to achieve. Remember, in most instances you will already have food in, which can be used up first. Useful items for an emergency store cupboard: tinned meats, tinned vegetables, tinned beans, pulses and chickpeas, tinned soups and packet soups, tinned fruit, a large bag of rice, a large bag of porridge oats, cooking oil, salt, honey, long-life milk, longlife orange juice, packs of cereal, cereal and protein bars, dried fruit. If you live in an area where flooding and therefore water contamination is likely allow 2 litres of bottled water per person per day for drinking and cooking. A simple emergency store cupboard can be built up over a couple of months quite easily by adding a few extras into your weekly shop. A can opener is essential. Torches, batteries, and a camping stove insure against loss of electricity, and loo roll, bleach, hand sanitiser, paracetamol, ibuprofen, plasters and disinfectant are useful health and medical items. If you live in a flood zone, make sure your supplies are stored high up. Use a verminproof storage box in the coolest place possible, and every so often move items out into your regular cupboards, and replace them, to make sure that nothing goes beyond its sell-by date. One last thing. We all have important documents filed away such as birth certificates, passports, insurance documents and house deeds. Ideally these should be stored in a fire and waterproof deed box to protect them. A little thought and preparation goes a long way. No bunker required! VEGAN FEST HORSHAM

F

ollowing the amazing success of Vegan Fest Horsham in February last year, the plantbased fair is returning to the Drill Hall on Saturday 25th April with, as before, all profits going to charity. The 2019 event saw around 2,000 people pass through the door – vegans, vegetarians and those curious to seek out some vegan alternatives! Although Vegan Fest Horsham will be welcoming back some of its stallholders from last year, there will be plenty of new faces, too, including some vegan-friendly Horsham based businesses. There will be over 40 stalls in the main hall offering a vast array of products including vegan chocolates, beauty products, cakes, books, cheese, household items, nutrition and environmental advice, as well as a number of catering stalls offering a wide range of delicious hot and cold foods. In addition, wine and locally produced beer will be available in the bar area, together with hot drinks. There will also be a series of free talks throughout the day focusing on a variety of topics. Plus there may also be a guest appearance from the actor Peter Egan! The celebrity will be talking about his work with the charity Animals Asia and his own vegan journey.

34

APRIL/MAY 2020

The interest in veganism in both the UK and the rest of the world is growing rapidly, with a record number of people taking part in Veganuary at the start of the year. There are some excellent vegan alternatives to most animal based foods these days, so following a vegan lifestyle is becoming far easier. For many, the transition to veganism is triggered by awareness of the cruelty to animals in both the meat and dairy industry. For others it may be for health reasons, as it now generally accepted that a well-planned plant-based diet can bring many long-term health benefits. But for most, the decision to follow a vegan lifestyle goes hand in hand with knowing that overall it is considered a more environmentally friendly way of living. So whether you are a fully-fledged vegan or just need some ideas or a bit of inspiration for a vegan friend or relative, do come along and take a look! Vegan Fest Horsham will be at the Drill Hall in Denne Road, Horsham on Saturday 25th April 2020 from 10.30am till 4.30pm. The entrance fee is £2.00 per person (under 16’s free) and all profits will be going jointly to The Born Free Foundation and Animals Asia (UK registered charities). For further details visit Vegan Fest Horsham’s Facebook page or email veganfesthorsham@gmail.com.

HOW SMART IS YOUR HAIRDRESSER?

e are passionate about

education at Studio 2 and have been building creative

hairdressers for almost 40 years. We invest a lot of time and effort in educating our team in the practical and interpersonal skills required to become the very best they can be. One of the key elements of our education is understanding our teams learning styles, or, as I call them, their “smarts”. People learn in different ways so it’s important to understand the differences so we can play to their strengths. Over the years I’ve learned that there are eight smarts, these show up in the salon in very interesting ways: 1. Linguistic (word smart) - the bookworms, the orators, the storytellers 2. Logical/Mathematical (numbers and reasoning smart) interested in cutting angles, understanding percentages 3. Spatial (picture smart) - the image users, the artists 4. Musical (music smart) - the tappers, movers and shakers 5. Bodily-kinesthetic (body smart) - they learn by doing 6. Interpersonal (people smart) - they work best in groups 7. Intrapersonal (self smart) - they need to think quietly and reflect 8. Naturalist (nature smart) - inspired by the outdoors When we understand how people learn we can support and nurture them in the right way which, for us, is very important as it keeps our team skilled, happy and motivated to do their best every day. It’s never too late to develop your smarts - something I’m keen to pass on to the team, after all, who doesn’t want to be smarter? We are currently recruiting apprentices to start in September, if you’re feeling smart please call 01403 255555 or visit www.studio2horsham.co.uk

as making or updating your will been on your to-do list? If you don’t have a will, or your circumstances have changed, you can get a professional will made, and support terminally ill people Ken and his girls. in your community, during St Catherine’s Make A Will Fortnight. None of us like to think about the end of our life but having a professionally written will means that when the time comes, you can be confident that people you love, and causes important to you will be looked after. When Wendy’s husband Ken died, she wanted to know that their girls would always be cared for so she used St Catherine’s Make A Will Fortnight. She said, “Immediately after Ken died I couldn’t remember anything. I lived off post-it notes, and even simple things weren’t possible. I’d never expected to lose my husband so soon or to become a lone parent, but I knew I had to do all I could to protect our girls. That meant sorting out my will. After what happened to Ken, I wanted to know that if anything happened to me our girls would be looked after. Writing my will, and acknowledging the huge change that had taken place, was so hard but St Catherine’s and a local solicitor made the process easy, and I felt comforted that I’d done it afterwards.” For two weeks in May (11 to 22 May 2020), carefully selected solicitors across Sussex and Surrey are generously giving up their time and expertise in return for a donation to St Catherine’s. Suggested donations are: • £120 for a single will • £180 for a joint will Your donation will help provide hospice care for people in your community. When making your will there’s no obligation to

include a gift to St Catherine’s, but any gift, big or small, is a wonderful way to make sure your care for your loved ones and local community will live on. Gifts left in wills to St Catherine’s fund the care of one in four hospice patients so they make a huge difference. Andy Perry, Legacy Officer at St Catherine's said, "Currently our hospice isn’t able to help everyone locally who needs our support, but in the future, we want to make sure no one faces death and loss alone. If you include a gift in your will, you’ll take us closer to helping more people in your community.” For full details and a list of solicitors taking part, please visit www.stch.org.uk/mawf or contact Andy Perry on: 01293 447369, or andyperry@stch.org.uk. RECIPE

BEEF RENDANG Preparation time: 40 mins Cooking time: 2 and a half hours. Serves: 6+ fkdobafbkqp=

3 tbsp vegetable oil 2kg beef shin or skirt, cut into bite-sized chunks 2 lemongrass stalks, bruised 2 x 400ml cans coconut milk 4 tbsp unsweetened desiccated coconut 2 kaffir lime leaves, torn 1 Beef stock cube 2 tbsp tamarind paste 1 tsp sugar Âź tsp salt For the paste 1/2 - 3 chillies chopped (depending on taste)

6-8 baby shallots 2 inch / 5cm piece ginger, chopped three cloves garlic jbqela For the paste, place all paste ingredients into a small food processor and blitz until smooth. Heat the oil in a heavy-based flameproof casserole dish or large saucepan. Fry the paste for 5-10 minutes until golden. Add the beef chunks and the lemongrass and mix well. Once the beef has coloured, add the coconut milk plus 250ml water. Bring to the boil, then lower to a very low simmer, uncovered for 2 hours. Stir occasionally to prevent the rendang sticking, and more often towards the end. Towards the end of the cooking time toast the coconut in a frying pan on a low heat for 5-7 mins until golden brown. Set aside to cool. Using a blender, coarsely blend it to finer pieces – but not too fine. Put to one side. After 2 hrs, add the coconut, kaffir lime leaves, stock cube, tamarind paste, sugar and salt to the pan. Stir well and simmer for 30 minutes. The meat should be tender and falling apart when touched. Serve with rice and green salad.

Horsham District. I have been speaking to Claire Edgal at Trafalgar School in Horsham. She is keen to get some older members of our community into the school, on a regular basis, to listen to the children reading. Adults will need to be DBS checked (paid for by the school) and the reading sessions will take place on Tuesdays from 9am – 10.30am and Thursdays 1.15pm – 2.45pm to start with. If there is a lot of interest, then the school might be able to offer other times so do get in touch even if the times suggested don’t suit. Ideally,

Sharpenhurst Quartet (pictured above), to offer a performance of his wonderful string quartets on Saturday, 9th May 7.30pm in the lovely acoustic of the Unitarian Church, Worthing Road, Horsham. They will play his Quartets Op.18 No.5 in A Major, a homage to Mozart, and Op.59 No.1 in F Major 'Rasumovsky'. The occasion also marks the Music Circle's own 78th Anniversary of presenting concerts in the town. The Sharpenhurst Quartet was formed in 2019 specially to celebrate the Horsham Year of Culture with the Horsham Music Circle and named after the hill overlooking Christ’s Hospital, where its members all teach. They are led by Rachel Ellis, leader of Horsham Symphony Orchestra, with Anna Giddey, violin, Emily Marsden, viola and Rhian Steel, cello. Despite having busy teaching, performing and family commitments between them, they find time for this incredible music, which stretches and inspires them in equal measures. Tickets are available in advance from 01403 252602, website www.horsham-musiccircle.org.uk, email horshammusiccircle@gmail.com, from Horsham Museum 01403 211661 and on line from www.wegottickets.com/HorshamMusicCircle and on the door. CHAMS

CALLING ALL SUPER HEROES Join the mission to help vulnerable local children n the 11th April Spider-Man is returning to Crawley on a special mission, and he needs the help of all our local Super Heroes. Spider-Man will be leading a children’s Super Hero Fun Run around Tilgate Lake, to raise vital funds for local charity Home-Start CHAMS. Train up as a Super Hero and use your powers to take on a sponsored charity fun run, choosing either 1.5km or 500m distance. Walk, run or toddle your way round in Super Hero style and after your mission enjoy the fun mini event village which has stalls and activity’s for all the family to enjoy! Event village open from 9am until lunch time. Every little Super Hero who takes on this mission will receive: a Super Hero wrist band, bottle of water & entry into the prize draw. There is also a prize for the most money raised. In 2018 – our last Crawley based run, more than 200 little Super Heroes joined Spider-Man, from Super Hero Parties, to take on the challenge which raised over £3,400 for Home-Start CHAMS. As well as sponsorship for the run, local children came up with a range of ways to raise money, from sweet and cake sales after school, a Fundraising Day at nursery, to doing chores around the house. Each year Home-Start CHAMS help hundreds of local children in families dealing with issues such as abuse, mental health, financial problems, or serious illness. Their trained volunteers work with the families, helping parents to overcome these challenges and give young children the best possible start in life. Aneliese Whittaker, Fundraising and Marketing Co-ordinator at Home-Start said “This event is a fun way for local children to get involved and support other children. We are so grateful to Super Hero Parties, Tilgate Park and Tilgate Parkrun, who are supporting this event again.” This event is open to all ages and abilities under 11's must be accompanied by an adult.

any people find that spring is a time to reflect and make decisions about changes they would like in their lives. The Group, a Sussex club for unattached men and women aged 50+, has venues in Burgess Hill, Horsham, Lewes, Worthing and Brighton. It’s not a dating agency but it does offer a great opportunity to meet new friends of both sexes in a welcoming atmosphere. Says Tricia Bentley, co-founder of The Group, “Organisations like ours attract more women than men. We’re not really sure why that is except that women generally tend to enjoy networking. The men who are our members would confirm, though, that it’s a very enjoyable club to be in and, once they’ve crossed the threshold, they all become actively Please mention HORSHAM PAGES South when responding to adverts

involved with events.” says Tricia, “And we have a great time. So come on guys! Push open that door, come in and join us. You’ll be very welcome.” There are walks, pub evenings, theatre trips, golf, lunches and dinners, holidays, and much more. The Group has been going for 14 years and now has over 300 members. They’ve created a website, www.thegroup.org.uk, which tells you everything you need to know. Going into a room full of people you don’t know can be difficult, but not with The Group. You’ll get a good welcome. Where do they meet? The Group meet in Horsham on the 4th Monday of the month - take a look at www.thegroup.org.uk APRIL/MAY 2020
