BUSINESS TAX

C H A N G E S T O VAT I N O C T O B E R QUESTION:

I

’ve heard there are changes to VAT coming in October, what does this mean for my business?

ANSWER:

A

new domestic reverse charge will take effect in October 2019 and aims to tackle Missing Trader intra-Community (MTIC)

fraud.

Key features of the new rules are: • Applies only to construction services • Affects standard 20% and reduced-rated 5% supplies • Applies to ‘specified services’ that fall under CIS reporting • Only affects ‘specified supplies’ made between VAT registered businesses. • The whole supply is subject to the reverse charge if an invoice has partial CIS • Account for VAT in the normal way if you are making the supply to a consumer • Sub-contractors are likely to become VAT repayment traders Work on new build dwellings is zero-rated and will not be affected regardless of who the customer is. A business making supplies as a sub-contractor to a VAT registered main contractor would not charge VAT. When you make a supply of standard or reduced-rated construction services direct to consumers, the reverse charge does not apply and you must charge and account for VAT in the normal way.

8

AUG/SEPT 2019

If you are on the flat rate scheme, you should not include reverse charge supplies in your flat rate turnover. If you receive any reverse charge supplies whilst on the flat rate scheme, these should be dealt with outside the scheme. This means that you account for the VAT to HMRC, but will be able to credit yourself with the input tax (as long as you are fully taxable). HMRC have said they will apply a soft touch approach towards errors for the first 6 months whilst traders get used to the changes and they have now published further detailed guidance on 7 June 2019 – VAT: domestic reverse charge for building and construction services. DIFFERENT WAYS TO BE HEALTHIER

W

ith the Tour De France under way its a good time to think about how we can do more cycling and get fitter. On page 38 you can read about National Cycle to Work Day on 8th August, the UK’s biggest cycle commuting event. Cycling has seen an increase in popularity over the last few years with great local events like the Velo South and triathlons across the county. Cycling is a fun and effective form of exercise, but some worry that pressure from a bicycle saddle can cause urinary, sexual, prostate problems and can even increase your risk of prostate cancer. The article concludes that riding is an excellent form of exercise and will not increase your risk of prostate cancer. Other ways to reduce your risk of prostate cancer are staying at a healthy weight

and eating a well-balanced, healthy diet that includes plenty of fruits, vegetables and wholegrain foods. With summer time upon us and rising temperatures there is a new health and wellbeing page written by Anna Pinnock on page 34 looking at why hydration is so important for the body. On average, water makes up between 60% and 75% of our body weight, depending on age. And without it you’ll only be able to survive for a few days, compared to a few weeks without food. And if you want to get out and enjoy the countryside there is a series of walks organised by Sussex Pathfinders Rambling Club which you can find on page 67. So enjoy a healthy summmer! CHILDREN’S PARADE

CREATIVITY, COLOUR AND COSTUMES Horsham’s streets came alive with a riot of vibrant colour, joyous music and imaginative dance at Horsham's first ever Children's Parade

O

n Sunday 7 July, over 700 children from 17 Horsham District schools showcased the fantastic models and costumes they had made in school with professional community artists from Same Sky, the organisation behind the Brighton Children’s Parade as part of the Horsham District Year of Culture, Horsham Festival and the Funday Sunday. The theme was Art & Artists and each school interpreted the work of an artist in their own imaginative way. Kingslea Primary School created a giant bust of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo and each student carried a monkey or cat on their back, a motif often depicted in her work. Northolmes Junior School turned themselves into Andy Warhol’s ‘Campbell’s Soup Cans’, waved Marilyn flags and walked alongside their giant effigy of the ’60s Pop Art icon himself. Rusper Primary School donned glorious orange costumes and paraded their giant ‘Tree of Life’, by Gustav Klimt. Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee School got surreal with Salvador Dali, dressing up as his

melting clocks from ‘The Persistence of Memory’, and carrying a giant model of the moustached master himself. Leechpool Primary School took on Street Art with a giant Banksy wall, spray can costumes and multitude of hearts, a motif in his infamous work ‘Girl With Balloon’. Heron Way Primary School turned themselves into Picassoesque portraits, Holy Trinity CE Primary School into Van Gogh’s ‘Sunflowers’, All Saints CE Primary School into Monet’s ‘Waterlilies’ and Southwater Junior Academy into Jackson Pollock ‘splatter’ style paintings. Greenway Academy made a Yayoi Kusama-inspired ‘Octopumpkin’ and inventively decorated themselves in her trademark Polkadots. Holbrook Primary School created a multitude of butterflies to represent Damien Hirst’s ‘Kaleidoscope’ paintings. Shipley CE Primary School went vibrant with the colourful work of Joss Rossita. St Andrew’s CE Primary School recreated Georgia O’Keefe’s ‘Ram's Head and White Hollyhock’. St Robert’s Southwell RC Primary School depicted Leonardo

Da Vinci’s visionary ‘helicopter’ invention. St John’s Catholic Primary School took on the colourful creations of Brazilian-born contemporary artist, Romero Britto. Arunside Primary School presented Bridget Riley inspired optical illusions in the form of a giant eye and striped panels, while North Heath Community Primary became a colourful mass of Kandinsky circles. Each and every school created amazing models and costumes to present at this truly inspiring and joyous community event. Horsham District folk turned out in their droves, lining the route to wave and cheer the parade on from its start at Denne Road, along East and West Street, through the Carfax and up North Parade where it entered Horsham Park and became part of the Funday Sunday, ending in front of the main stage where they were welcomed by local entertainer Ollie Heath, and a few words by Jeremy Quinn (MP for Horsham) and HDC Cllr and Chair, Kate Rowbottom. The proceedings then moved to the eyecatching yellow and white marquee where Happy Accidents CIC held a mini-exhibition of the schools’ models, and visitors could take part in some ‘have a go’ creative activities with local community artists, Aleida Strowger, Annalees Lim and Morag

Warrack, including landscape drawing, making Frida masks, Pop Art headbands and collaborating on a community mural. Aleida Strowger, Founder of Community Arts Organisation, Happy Accidents, who initiated the project, said: “This has been such an exciting and inspiring journey. All the schools really threw themselves into the project and I was stunned to see the incredible models and costumes they have created. It was a pleasure and privilege to work with the schools and with Same Sky, who’s Children’s Parade in Brighton was the inspiration for ours and its creative and production engine room. Their team has worked extremely hard to ensure that this was a well-organised, fun and inspiring event. Massive thanks to Arts Council England, Horsham District Year of Culture, West Sussex County Council, Saxon Weald and all those who generously donated to our crowdfunding campaign – you all believed in the project and saw its incredible value, not just to the schools involved but for the wider community who are united by such joyous events. We’re already seeing the community calling for the parade to be an annual event. Here’s hoping!”

GLOBETROTTING GRUFFALOS

T

wenty Gruffalo toys were sent on a global journey by the beloved children’s author Julia Donaldson CBE to celebrate the 20th anniversary of The Gruffalo book in 2019. The toys are part of the Global Gruffalo project, created as part of the Horsham District Year of Culture 2019 to celebrate the project’s patron Julia Donaldson CBE, and are sponsored by 20 local Horsham businesses. They set out on their journeys as Horsham District Council launched its Year of Culture celebrations at the beginning of January, and in the first six months of the year their travels have taken them far and wide. They have been spotted as far afield as Saudi Arabia, Switzerland, Italy, America and the Caribbean Islands. Their antics have included enjoying ice cream in Florence with sponsors Macmillan Publishers, high fiving Park Run runners with the Forestry Commission, touring with the Birmingham Stage Company and visiting many other theatres UK wide with The Capitol, the Rotary Club Gruffalo has visited Portugal with world renowned violinist Andrew Bernardi and by far the best educated Gruffalo is the toy sponsored by Brock Taylor Estate Agents who has visited almost every primary school across the District. The Gruffalo sponsors have been equally busy recording their Gruffalos along their

journeys which can be seen on the official Global Gruffalo website: www.globalgruffalo.co.uk . Commenting on the success of the Year of Culture’s Gruffalo sponsorship, Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure said: “Global Gruffalo is such a fun way of promoting the Horsham District Year of Culture 2019 and celebrating the 20th anniversary of The Gruffalo. “We have lots of other sponsorship opportunities available for special Year of Culture events so don’t hesitate to contact our team by email at culture19@horsham.gov.uk if you are interested.” Sponsors of the Gruffalos are Gatwick Airport, Leonardslee Lakes and Gardens, Magic Light, Macmillan Publishing, Swan Walk Shopping Centre, Chestnut Treehouse Hospice, Saxon Weald, Foresters Friendly Society, Forestry Commission, Travel Counsellors, Creative Technology, The Capitol Horsham, Horsham Rotary Club, Brock Taylor, Global Financial, By Jove Media, Tomfoolery, Horsham District Council and Creative Assembly. WARDENS TARGET DRUGS AWARENESS

H

orsham District Council’s Neighbourhood Warden teams worked in partnership with Sussex Police to promote and support National Drugs Awareness Week from 24 to 28 June, offering advice and safeguarding information across the Horsham District about the dangers of drugs use. In Pulborough the Wardens spent an afternoon at Pulborough train station, distributing information and talking to some 30 residents about how drugs can affect people’s lives. The Horsham wardens attended a local youth support club where they discussed the harm illegal drugs can cause. They also held a street briefing in the Carfax in partnership with the police, undertook three joint patrols with Police Community Support Officers to drugs hotspot areas and patrolled Horsham Park and train station, engaging with the community about reporting drug use and how to access local support organisations. In Billingshurst the wardens dropped into the youth club and visited areas where young people congregate, in order to promote drug awareness. The Storrington wardens spent time at the bus station where the older school children get off the coaches, handing out drugs information leaflets. They also gave out information to any other young people they saw around the village. In Southwater, the wardens gave a drugs awareness presentation to the Southwater Youth Group. The young people were keen to engage in related activities and discussions around identification of illegal substances and the harmful effects. The wardens also attended Christ’s Hospital train station handing out information leaflets to both young people and adults. The wardens in Steyning, Bramber and Upper

Commenting on the activities taking place Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for Community and Wellbeing Cllr Tricia Youtan said: “Drug misuse is a growing issue and I am pleased that as a council we made a real success of the Drugs Awareness Week with so many of our Neighbourhood Wardens engaging in so much activity across our local area. In addition to the warden activity, on Thursday 4 July there was a free information briefing session in Horsham’s Park Barn for parents of secondary school age children, regarding drugs and criminal exploitation. The evening was run by PC Darren Worsfold and Kirsty Lindgren from WSCC’s Children’s Services, with support from the council’s Anti-Social Behaviour team. HORSHAM’S FIRST SPANISH FESTIVAL Sunday’s first Horsham Spanish Festival, Feria de Horsham, played out to an enthusiastic audience who packed the town and enjoyed exciting displays of Spanish music, dancing and street food in the town’s Carfax from noon to the early evening.

O

rganised by Horsham District Council with a new partner, Feria de Londres, the show came down from London’s South Bank and really captured the spirit of the spring Spanish festivals. Throughout the day various styles of hugely impressive Spanish dance and music were enjoyed across both bandstand and

‘amphitheatre stages’ with many colourful costumes and audience participation much in evidence. Local Spanish business, Vacalola, ran a popular children’s craft activity, which together with face painting, a caricaturist and a dress up photo booth meant there was plenty for the whole family to enjoy.

SUNNY HORSHAM PIAZZA ITALIA DELIVERS THE SMILES

There were queues at the food stalls for most of the day, with several of the traders selling out before the end. Tropical foliage was again provided by Big Plant Nursery of Ashington adding to the setting. The Council is asking for event feedback with an opportunity to win a bottle of Cava from The Horsham Cellar – access to the survey is via the event page on www.horshamtimewellspent.co.uk The Feria was the fourth in a series of four Horsham town spring events billed as ‘Horsham- Life’s a Beach’ supporting Horsham District Year of Culture 2019. Based on feedback received by the Council so far many who visited would like the Feria to return along with the new Caribbean festival which

took place a few weeks earlier. Commenting on the event, Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for Horsham Town, Cllr Peter Burgess said: “Feria de Horsham was another great event for our town centre which got everyone involved. “It was something different for the town and created a real buzz for both visitors and local businesses alike. All our cafes, restaurants and bars were full to bursting and the Spanish themed street food stalls had a great trading day. “During this special Horsham District Year of Culture for 2019, it was an event which really captured the vibrant culture of Horsham. “Please give us your feedback as we’d love to bring it back next year.”

COMMEMORATIONS AT LOCAL AIRFIELD

S

ome 150 young and older people attended a plaque unveiling ceremony at the Coolham airfield D-Day memorial to commemorate the 15 young airmen – one Canadian, six British and eight Polish - who gave their lives while serving at Coolham airfield to support the D Day landings 75 years ago. Many more people took the opportunity to walk round the airfield and visit the 15 oak trees planted by Horsham District Council 25 years ago where a further plaque was unveiled, and many posters were erected telling the stories of that eventful summer of 1944. The visitors included the grandsons of Adam Sworniowski, born in Krakow, Poland who died 75 years ago at the age of 26 while dive bombing enemy positions. His P51 Mustang was hit by flak, but after bailing out successfully between Bayeux and Caen, he was shot by a German tank crew while attempting to escape into woods. The Chairman of Horsham District Council Cllr Kate Rowbottom unveiled a plaque showing photographs of the young men who died, the layout of the airfield and the location of the trees which were planted in their memory 25 years ago. Coolham airfield was one of seven Advanced Landing Grounds which were built in Kent and Sussex in 1943 and 1944 to ensure air superiority during the greatest coastal invasion in history, as the Allied Forces landed in France on June the

32

6th 1944 to begin the task of freeing the oppressed nations of Europe from Hitler’s armies. Construction of Coolham Airfield began in August 1943 and was completed in April 1944. The first mission was flown on April 26th. Missions were flown virtually every day during May and June. Activities on the Airfield were terminated on the 15th of July 1944. Altogether some 7 fighter squadrons were based at Coolham. Cllr Rowbottom commented: “We thank these young men who flew from here across the English Channel to ensure our country’s freedom so that, now, 75 years later we can enjoy the beautiful and peaceful surroundings of Shipley and Coolham.” The Airfield now contains a plaque with photographs of the airmen who died. There are also many posters around the airfield describing events which took place in that eventful summer of 1944. All are invited to come and walk round Coolham Airfield and commemorate those who died while serving there and remember their part in the final drive to Victory in Europe. This can be done at any time and the Airfield can be entered on paths from Smithers Hill lane (close to the Countryman Pub and George and Dragon) and the B2139 just South of Coolham Crossroads (close to the Selsey Arms).

orsham District Council’s Economic Development team has successfully secured £142,000 of funding to support small businesses in the Horsham District until June 2021. The highly successful Local Enterprise and Apprenticeship Platform (LEAP) Small Grant Scheme is being targeted this year at the District’s small businesses and business start-ups. The Council is granting funds of up to £2,000 per organisation in six tranches throughout the two years and the first tranche of funds is now open to applications until 30 August 2019. Commenting on the funds available, Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for the Local Economy Cllr Paul Clarke said: “The Council’s 2017 and 2018 LEAP funding

schemes were highly successful, supporting more than 60 local businesses who benefited from cash injections to enable them to grow. “I encourage local businesses and entrepreneurs wanting to start their own business to apply for funds now whilst they are still available.” Businesses applying must be based in the Horsham District and be registered with HMRC and/or Companies House. Any business interested in applying for LEAP funds can apply here: www.thinkhorsham.co.uk More help and support is available for those thinking of setting up a new business. HEALTH & WELLBEING

HYDRATION: WHY ITS SO IMPORTANT

I

t’s summer time and the sun has finally arrived. With the smell of BBQs wafting in the air, our thoughts turn to what refreshing beverage we should have to wash down those succulent sausages. Staying hydrated during hot weather is vitally important to our overall health and wellbeing but not all liquids hit the spot. On average, water makes up between 60% and 75% of our body weight, depending on age. And without it you’ll only be able to survive for a few days, compared to a few weeks without food. So, why is water so important? • It helps us to regulate our body temperature through sweating and breathing. • It can assist in lubricating our joints. • With 75% of the brain made up of water, we need it for optimal brain function. • It will aid in eliminating waste from the body through the urine, breath and stool. • Water helps with the digestion process by forming saliva and breaking down food. If the thought of drinking water isn’t exciting to you, can always add a little bit of kick to it by investing in a reusable water infuser and add lemon, orange, cucumber, lime or mint for flavour. For most people, water is still the best thing to drink, but non-alcoholic drinks can also help you stay hydrated. Tea (black, green, herbal etc), coffee (in small amounts), milk, sport/electrolyte drinks, fruit juices, and soda are all sources of water. If possible you want to avoid having a high intake of fruit juices and fizzy drinks due to their high sugar content. And

34

AUG/SEPT 2019

while the alcohol is a staple part of most BBQs it won’t really hydrate you. This is because it has a diuretic effect, which means it increases urination resulting in you losing more water which increases the risk of dehydration. Therefore, for every alcoholic drink, have at least one glass of water to help replenish your water stores. But it’s not all about liquids. Food can also be high in water with fruit and vegetables counting towards your water intake. In fact, about 20% of your water intake comes from food! So how much water should you drink? The amount depends on your age, environmental conditions, weight, activity levels, overall health and food intake. The NHS Eatwell Guide suggests 6-8 glasses of fluid a day, but if the weather is hot or you’re exercising then you may need to drink more. An easy way to check if you’re drinking enough is to look at the colour of your urine – it’s not pleasant but it’s effective. Pale and clear means you’re well hydrated, but if it’s dark you need to drink more. Other signs you’re not drinking enough include dry mouth, thirst, muscle cramps, mild constipation, light-headedness, headache, lack of energy or changes in blood pressure. So go out there, enjoy the sunshine and don’t forget to take a bottle of water with you. www.annapinnock.co.uk

WEST SUSSEX UROLOGY

IS CYCLING BAD FOR MEN’S HEALTH?

Simon Woodhams.

T

his year, on 8th August 2019, National Cycle to Work Day, the UK’s biggest cycle commuting event, is encouraging thousands of enthusiastic riders to hit the streets to celebrate everyday cycling. Although some clinical studies show that side effects of bicycle riding in men can include genital numbness and in rare cases infertility, impotence, blood in the urine, inflammation of the prostate, and elevated PSA levels, do the pros of an active lifestyle outweigh the risks? As a keen cyclist, Simon Woodhams, Consultant Urologist joined his colleagues last year to raise over £30,000 for local urology services, taking part in their own version of the cancelled Velo South. He explains, ‘The prostatespecific antigen, or PSA, test is the current gold standard for identifying prostate cancer. Although studies are mixed about the effects of cycling on the PSA test, a few have linked bicycling riding to temporary elevated PSA levels, which could lead to a false screening. If you are concerned about the possibility and have an upcoming PSA test, you may consider avoiding

38

AUG/SEPT 2019

cycling before blood sampling. Regular bicycle riding does not cause prostate cancer, and it may even reduce your risk for developing it.’ ‘If you have a chronic prostate problem that’s provoked by using a conventional seat, you can switch to a recumbent seat. ‘Noseless’ bicycle saddles can reduce numbness, pressure and genital discomfort in male cyclists. A traditional bike saddle puts 25% to 40% of your body's weight on the nerves and blood vessels down there, but a no-nose saddle shifts that weight toward the sit bones.’ A lack of exercise and eating a high-fat diet are two risk factors for developing prostate cancer that you can control. Other risk factors include your age, race, genetics and family history. Mr Woodhams concludes that, ‘Men who get the most exercise have a lower incidence of prostate cancer when compared with men who get little or no exercise. Exercising on most days of the week can help you lower your risk of developing prostate cancer. Bicycle riding is an excellent form of exercise and will not increase your risk of prostate cancer. Other ways to reduce your risk of prostate cancer are staying at a healthy weight and eating a well-balanced, healthy diet that includes plenty of fruits, vegetables and whole-grain foods.’ For more information visit www.westsussexurology.co.uk

The art of storytelling helps humans negotiate the world we live in but it’s important to remember that the stories are not the truth - truth can be any narrative we choose. At Studio 2 we understand that the story about our image and how we decide we should look can, and will, change over time. Through careful consideration, we can help guests move from their old “story” to something new. We consider: • Personal style • Hair growth patterns/texture • Lifestyle (work, leisure time) • Home care (skill, products, tools) • Budget (time, financial) • Emerging trends • Colour (skin tone, fashion, design) The autumn is a brilliant time to reinvent your image as summer is coming to an end and the party season will soon be upon us.

a Pop up Shop in Swan Walk during the last Horsham Arts Festival. He has exhibited and sold his work widely in such various venues as The Mine Gallery Carshalton, Chelsea Town Hall, Fairfield Halls Croydon and The Menier Gallery Southwark. Ian’s beautiful paintings, as well as mounted prints, will be available to purchase for the duration of the exhibition. This is a wonderful opportunity to own a beautiful artwork, depicting our wonderful region. Impressions of Sussex will be open on the ground floor of Horsham Museum & Art Gallery from 5 July – 31 August 2019.

otanical art, the beautifully exquisite celebration of the natural world blending art and science in technical and artistic perfection, is a challenging and demanding art form. The ancient market town of Horsham has been the home of some of this country’s leading exponents who have not only developed the eye, brush and palette, but have inspired a new generation of local artists. Now, in 2019, coming

portraits that have captivated collectors from around the world as well as being acquired by the leading botanical organisations. Jill’s work can be seen in the Dr Shirley Sherwood Collection, The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, The Royal Horticultural Society, Chelsea Physic Garden and the Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation, Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, USA. The Royal Horticultural Society has also awarded Jill the Gold medal three times for her watercolours. Jill has also produced paintings for the Highgrove Florilegium, for The Prince of Wales Trust set up to record plants in Highgrove Gardens. Jill’s enthusiasm and teaching ability inspired other artists to take up the challenge, including Storrington based artist Suzanne Merrikin who has been awarded the Silver Gilt by the Royal Horticultural Society for her watercolours. Leigh Ann Gale, who was awarded medals by the RHS and the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden in Cape Town, South Africa, not only teaches and practises her art, but has also put pen to paper writing highly regarded books to guide the novice to achieve more. Leigh Ann’s work is held in the permanent collection at the Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation in Pittsburgh, USA, The Florilegium Society at Sydney Botanic Gardens, Hampton Court Palace Archives, Nymans Florilegium, and private collections. One of her students is the talented

and modest Hazel Barnard who is also a member of the School. Linda Lasham and Heather Glenny are two other talented members of the school, which also includes award winning artist and tutor Alice Harman from Steyning who has been awarded silver-gilt and two silver medals from the Royal Horticultural Society as well as being a fellow member of the Society of Botanical Artists. All of their works are held in museums and private collections. The School whilst focusing on the watercolour is open to members who exhibit the high standard of botanical artists but in a different medium. Deborah Crago uses pencil to capture the scientific and artistic quality that botanical art encourages, whilst Eleanor Coate has the distinction of being awarded a Gold medal from the Royal Horticultural Society for her photographic portraits of flowers and also achieved the Associate Distinction from the Royal Photographic Society with a panel of these botanical prints. The photographs deliberately follows the tradition of 17th and 18th century botanical art; a tradition that Horsham School of Botanical art celebrates in the 21st century. A Garden of Botanical Art at Horsham District Council’s Horsham Museum & Art Gallery opens on 6 July and runs until 14 September 2019 as part of the Horsham District’s Year of Culture.

COMMUNICATION... WHAT’S THE NOISE?

C

ommunication with young children needs to be uncomplicated, spoken slowly, and repeated for the child to process what is being said. Come back to the topic, maybe a few days later, checking that understanding has taken place, and assumptions not made. For example, at nursery we recently invited a parent to circle time who is an airline pilot. He described the procedure for take off. “I sit at the front of the plane. I check the weather, and all my controls for the plane. We start the engine, and I wait for instructions from the controllers. Then I taxi down the runway, pull the levers and we take off into the sky.” Days later, a child said, “Why does he catch a taxi down the runway before he takes off? Why doesn’t he drive the plane?” This child has been pondering this situation using familiar vocabulary (taxi) in a context he was not used to, and trying to understand the scenario. He felt better after we discussed it. To support children, we need to be sure we help the child to understand. Reading books to children helps enrich language but we must also make sure they understand what is meant. Books also introduce the child to a different style of language than the spoken word, and if we keep clarifying the meaning, we will be supporting the child in the best possible way. If you’d like to find out more about the nursery, please contact us on 01403 750504, info@montessori-uk.co.uk or visit our website at www.montessori-uk.co.uk

arvest mites are the tiny, orange, sixlegged larvae of the mite, Trombicula autumnalis. In late summer and autumn, particularly on dry and sunny days, they congregate in groups in long grass and vegetation. The larvae become parasites when they come into contact with passing mammals (including dogs, cats and even people). After attaching by thrusting their small hooked fangs into the skin surface, they inject digestive enzymes into the cells which break down into liquid and then get sucked up. This feeding process continues for two to three days until the larva has increased in size by three or four times, when it will drop off to complete the life cycle. Areas with little hair and where the skin is thin are most commonly affected, such as between the toes, the ears (Henry’s pocket – a little pocket of skin on the side of the pinna), face, armpits and tummy. Sensitive animals can have a severe skin reaction to the digestive enzymes injected by the larvae resulting in itching and skin inflammation. Secondary bacterial infection can also occur due to the irritation caused to the skin by scratching. Harvest mites are often recognisable as orange ‘dust’ on affected areas, but a diagnosis can be confirmed if your vet takes samples to identify the larvae under a microscope. Once diagnosed, your vet can prescribe a topical spray to kill the harvest mites and if necessary provide treatment to resolve itching and skin infection.Tel: 01403 791011. www.maltmancosham.co.uk

REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE AND REFILL By Jeanette Mercer

D

o you Refill? If you’re trying to make your home more sustainable and reduce the amount of single use plastic you use, refilling is definitely the way to go. One of the easiest swaps to make is to stop buying water in plastic bottles and use refillable water bottles instead. It just makes sense from so many angles. First is that you won’t be contributing to the 7.7 billion plastic water bottles used in the UK each year. Huge numbers like that are hard to even visualise, so that’s equal to an average of 150 bottles per person. Secondly there’s the cost - the average cost of a 500ml bottle of water in our area is anything from 70p to about £1.20. If you’re on a water meter, tap water costs you £1.37 per cubic metre. That’s 1000 litres, so basically you could fill up 2000 water bottles for £1.37! The UK has some of the highest quality tap water in the world, so it’s a shame not to make full use of it. Kinder Living are proud to be the organisers of Refill Horsham District, which is part of a national scheme offering free tap water refills. If you have a smartphone download the free Refill app which will show you the nearest place you can have your reusable bottle filled for free. Or look out for the window stickers like the one above. Water isn’t the only thing you can refill. Check out local plastic free organic wholefood supplier Earthkind for example. Earthkind joined us at this year’s Kinder Living Home Show and can be found at Horsham Repair Cafe each month. The

58

AUG/SEPT 2019

idea is simple - you take your own containers and buy dried goods by weight, so you can buy exactly what you want and it’s often cheaper than the supermarket. See the website for more details: (www.earthkind.shop). Invest in some reusable produce bags and you’ll be prepared for the increasing number of suppliers of plastic free fruit and vegetables. Local shops like Crates Local offer seasonal, local fresh produce without the plastic. And since March 2019 Horsham Markets have been single use plastic free. Detergents and toiletries are another area where it’s becoming easier to refill or buy without the packaging. On the first weekend of every month Horsham Repair Cafe offer refills of eco friendly cleaning products, saving money and plastic waste. For more details see the website: www.horshamrepaircafe.org.uk/refillservice/ And we can’t finish an article on refilling without talking about coffee. The numbers of disposable cups that are thrown away are simply staggering but coffee shops are taking notice. If you regularly buy coffee to take away, take your own reusable mug - many shops will even reward you with a discount for doing so. We hope you’re as committed as we are to refilling. New ways to refill are springing up all the time - so please do share any you find on the Kinder Living Facebook page so we can all benefit! SAHARA TREK CHALLENGE

W

hen St Catherine's Hospice launched their latest supporter challenge of a 50km trek in the Sahara, Jackie Reader was quick to sign up. Jackie and Beverley Russell, having met years before as sopranos in Cantatrice Voices, the Horsham ladies' choir, went along to the information evening and were hooked. The challenge will be tough, walking in heat and on unstable sand dunes. 'We'll be camping with the camels and their Berber leaders. But when I imagine the beauty of the clear night sky and the daytime dunes, I am so excited' says Beverley. Both women have strong reasons to make the trek while supporting St Catherine's. Jackie will be following in the footsteps of her

grandparents and mother who themselves trekked from the UK across North Africa, eventually setting up home in Nairobi. Both Jackie's mother and grandmother died from cancer and she is delighted to support the work of St Catherine's in End of Life Care. If you would like to join them at any of the events, email beverleydrussell@tiscali.co.uk or call Beverley 07880 855960 for more details. To sponsor Jackie and Beverley, go to their JustGiving www.justgiving.com/fundraising/beverleyrussell1 and www.justgiving.com/fundraising/ja ckie-readersahara
