COMMENT

MAKING OUR COMMUNITIES SAFER

F

eeling safe in our homes and communities without fear of crime is important. However, in this day and age, the reality is that many of us may feel isolated or vulnerable in our day-to-day lives; Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) can help alleviate such isolation and vulnerability. With the ever increasing strain on the resources and priorities placed on Police Forces across the country, the National Neighbourhood Watch Network (NWN) now plays a vital partnership role with Sussex Police, and other Agencies, to ensure the ongoing safety and well-being of our communities and residents. On pages 32 and 33 you can find out about two Neighbourhood Watch schemes -

Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) can help alleviate such isolation and vulnerability and Junior Neighbourhood Watch (JNHW) is a very successful and popular project package designed for 10-11-year-old children to gain an understanding and practical skills to deal with current neighbourhood issues. Volunteers are now being sought for JNHW and you can find out more about joining existing NHW schemes or creating a new scheme by getting in touch at horshamnhw@gmail.com or visit horshamnhw.btck.co.uk and help make our communities safer. LEONARDSLEE LAKES AND GARDENS RESTORED

D

escribed as ‘the finest woodland gardens in England’, Leonardslee Lakes and Gardens opened to the public on April 6th 2019. This follows two years’ extensive work on the Grade 1 Listed gardens and on site facilities by new owner Penny Streeter OBE. It is one of the largest UK garden restoration projects for nearly 30 years. Visit www.leonardsleegardens.co.uk. General manager Adam Streeter says that work by head gardener Ray Abraham has included inspection and extensive rebuilding of some 10 miles of pathways that had collapsed down into the valley in which the gardens are set; also cataloguing some 10,000 trees and carrying out tree surgery where necessary. Closed to the public since 2010, the 240 acre estate has attracted major public interest to see once again the outstanding displays of rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias, magnolias and bluebells, collected from all over the world from the early 1800s. Set in a steep-sided valley, the estate offers visitors a rare combination of lakes, woodlands

and parkland walks to enjoy. There is an acclaimed Pulham rock garden built in 1890, and a colony of wallabies and also deer to see. The renowned dolls’ house museum features the local village and its community in the Edwardian era, to 1/12 scale. The Grade II listed 19th-century Italianate style mansion is restored and updated and open for classic afternoon tea. There is also a multi-course tasting menu at Restaurant Interlude, with produce that is foraged, raised and produced on the estate and selected local farms. The house is also available for catered private functions and business events, with meeting rooms. The owner of Leonardslee since 2017 is entrepreneur Penny Streeter OBE. Her team has created facilities that include new tea and refreshment rooms, a gift shop and delicatessen featuring produce from the estate and sourced locally. “We are delighted to welcome visitors back to Leonardslee. They can enjoy the finest

woodland gardens in England, with a stunning collection of plants from all over the world, nurtured and tended to for nearly 200 years. We are planning a year-round programme of entertainment, so do follow us on social media!” Penny Streeter is the owner of the Benguela

Collection vineyard and hospitality group. In addition to Leonardslee, it includes the 400 acre Mannings Heath Golf Course and Wine Estate, located three miles from Leonardslee, and www.benguelacove.co.za Benguela Cove vineyard in South Africa, as well as four restaurants and a hotel on the Garden Route.

FREE PSA TESTS IN HORSHAM

P

CaSO (Prostate Cancer and Support Organisation) supported by Mark Masonry of Sussex are again offering a day of FREE PSA Tests in Horsham. Last year 154 men took advantage of the offer and we would like to increase that number this year. 1 in every 2 men will have a health problem with their prostate at some stage of their lives. It could be an infection, enlargement or cancer. 1 in every 8 men will develop prostate cancer and those of African-Caribbean origin and those with a family history of the disease are 2 to 3 times more at risk. PSA stands for Prostate Specific Antigen; it is a simple blood test that measures the amount of antigen, produced by the

14

JUNE/JULY 2019

prostate, entering the blood. It is not a direct test for cancer; a moderately raised reading can be an indicator of a prostate problem, a high reading should trigger further tests to determine if there is a need for any treatment. Some leading clinicians believe all men over 50 should know their PSA and have regular yearly tests. Swedish researchers say PSA testing every man aged 45 – 49 would predict nearly half of all prostate cancer deaths. Without screening, around 47,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer each year. It is now the leading cancer found in men. It was recently announced that prostate cancer kills more men than breast cancer kills women. Almost 11,000 men die of this disease annually, one every 48 minutes. Caught in the early stages, cure rates are dramatically improved with over 80% success. General symptoms of problems with the prostate are frequent need to urinate especially at night; bursting to urinate, slow flow, difficult, painful; stop/start and dribbling, or blood in the urine. The free PSA testing will be at: The Normandy Masonic Centre, Denne Road, Horsham, West Sussex RH12 1JF on Saturday 29th June 2019 from 10.00 am to 3.00 pm The testing will be conducted by trained personnel and phlebotomy nurses taking blood from a vein in the arm, this will be analysed at a laboratory and the result posted or emailed to you in around 10 days. It is essential to book an appointment time online at www.psatesting.org/horsham (booking open now). For those unable to book online, phone: 0845 650 2555.

SUNNY HORSHAM PIAZZA ITALIA DELIVERS THE SMILES The two days of Horsham’s 13th Piazza Italian festival presented the perennial blend of supercars and Italian cars, Italian market stalls and street food, themed entertainments and business promotions greatly boosted by a blast of glorious sunshine throughout.

B

uilt in to the event’s scheduling, Good Friday’s Horsham Churches Together bandstand service and Walk of Witness procession drew a massive audience who got the Carfax off to a rousing start accompanied by the surrounding bustle of the already trading market and street food stalls, all decked out in their Italian finery. Hundreds of supercars did their best to dominate proceedings but had the show stolen from them on both days by the most diminutive of all the car participants. Huge cheers and applause were reserved for the departure of the classic Fiat 500s and 30th Anniversary Italian Job Minis on Good Friday and the sole green Fiat 126 from Horsham Barbershop on the Monday. (Britain so loves an underdog!) A brilliant bouquet of Italian bikes also set the pulses racing as they roared through. Horsham District Year of Culture had boosted the event’s entertainments this year on Good

Friday with a brilliant opera singer and roving accordion player. On Easter Monday was an Italian jazz trio and more amazing opera. Much applause accompanied all the performances with several couples seen dancing to the swinging jazz. Quite a few town businesses chose to take advantage of the event too, including Crates Local Produce, Carmela Deli, Paninos and The Horsham Cellar all of whom were offering something special in keeping with the weekend. Horsham Time Well Spent events annual sponsors were well to the fore with Brock Taylor hosting the amazing Sporting Bears team who fielded an incredible selection of cars for charity ride outs both days raising some £5,680 for Chestnut Tree House and The Children’s Trust – an event record. Recently rebranded Impact Specialist Finance sponsored the departure gate and Cote Brasserie presented the first of five Concours d’Elegance

awards for best turned out vehicles at Horsham’s 2019 events – the award on Easter Monday going to the owner of an immaculate 30 year old Ferrari 328GTS. Henfield Van Hire & Storage who had provided the event team transport donated their hire fee to the children’s charities and Billy’s Transport presented their car trailering service to drivers attending the event. Premier GT of Washington excelled themselves on Easter Monday presenting a town full of high value cars that numbered over 120. All but the most picky couldn’t have failed to be impressed by the waves of Ferraris, Lamborghinis and Maseratis parading through the Carfax which were joined by a large McLaren and Porsche contingent that had been billed as England v Germany supercars. 2019’s Piazza Italia welcomed the return of show compere, the incomparable Tim Fifield,

social media through the weekend was driven by By Jove Media working closely with Tim for live streaming reports to keep people who couldn’t be there abreast of all the action. Event organiser Horsham District Council wishes to thank all commercial and voluntary participants for working together to give the town people and its businesses such an enjoyable weekend. Special thanks go to ETMS and SERV Sussex for the excellent traffic management services they provided and our event sponsors Kwik Fit, Premier GT, Bishops (part of FGB Barnes Group) and Bunny Motors. Plans for a huge town event programme, supported by the Council in keeping with the Year of Culture celebrations are now in full swing with a “magnificent seven” in prospect before the end of September, capped by the a greatly expanded Horsham AmeriCARna event on Sunday 29 September.

PATRICK MCINTOSH STARTS EPIC RIDE

T

here was a chorus of cheers and a celebratory atmosphere at St Catherine’s Hospice on 3rd May as local man, Patrick McIntosh, from Smallfield, began his ‘wheely’ great cycling challenge. Triple cancer survivor, Patrick, has already trekked to the South Pole. Now he’s taking on his Lifecycle – a mammoth around the world cycling challenge to raise awareness of the fight against cancer. And to raise funds to build a new home for his local hospice, St Catherine’s. And Patrick’s epic challenge hasn’t gone unnoticed. Before his departure his training efforts caught the attention of his neighbour Dame Judi Dench. She met with Patrick to wish him good luck and to give him a lucky four leafed clover silver medallion charm. Patrick has attached this to his bike for the duration of his challenge. Dame Judi said, “Patrick’s taking on an extraordinary journey. And he’s also cycling for our local hospice, St Catherine’s. I’m sure most people know about the phenomenal work they do looking after people in our community. Please watch Patrick’s progress and give what you can. Because cancer is something that concerns all of us, absolutely all of us, if not ourselves then certainly somebody we know.” Patrick said, “Having Dame Judi’s support has been amazing and I was particularly touched by the charm she gave me. The general support I’ve had has been incredible. I’d like to thank everyone who has already got behind my challenge, by donating and wishing me luck.” Hospice staff and supporters came together to cheer Patrick off for the first stint of his journey of more than 7,000 miles to Japan. Their support meant his journey got off to a great start! After leaving St Catherine’s Patrick cycled towards Pease Pottage, which will be the site of a new, larger hospice building in years to come, then

headed onto London and Twickenham Stadium. From there Patrick will cycle across Europe and Russia with the aim of reaching Tokyo for the opening game of the Rugby World Cup in September. As part of his cycle ride Patrick is raising money for St Catherine’s new hospice building. He said, “It’s an honour to support St Catherine’s as part of my latest adventure. Being a cancer survivor myself I know the importance of their vital care. I want more people to be able to have hospice care in the future so that’s why I’m raising money for St Catherine’s new larger hospice.” Speaking at St Catherine’s on the morning of his departure Patrick added, “Some people say I’m crazy to want to cycle around the world having survived three cancers, but I want to show what’s possible even after a horrible diagnosis and major surgery. I’m really looking forward to getting going now. After a well earned rest, Patrick intends to continue the next leg of his global cycle ride across North America and Iceland in early 2020. CAPTURED BY LIGHT A unique event is taking place at Horsham Museum with photographers from both ends of Horsham District working together to create a gallery of over 80 photographs celebrating the culture of the District.

Truffles, Horsham by Martin Erhard, Horsham Photographic Society.

I

nspired by the Horsham Districts Year of Culture members of the Horsham Photographic Society and Steyning Camera Club have spent over 365 days in all weathers, capturing by light, remarkable images that portray the districts amazing cultural life. Horsham Museum and Art Gallery are delighted to be able to showcase their work. Captured by Light opened in April and runs through until July. Photography came to Horsham District around 1855 and ever since then it has been part of the district’s cultural life, as it has both recorded culture and been part of it. As part of the new temporary exhibition at Horsham District Council’s Horsham Museum and Art Gallery shows photography in the district has been led by amateurs, with the professional photographer on their heels. On display will be some early examples of their work, including that of a Horsham photographic inventor. However, the focus of the exhibition are the non-professional photographers, the Club/Society members whose love of the

medium shines out in the stunning prints of the district. It would be invidious to select some highlights, as every image on display deserves to be there, either through technical merit or through capturing that special image; be it reflection from a dashboard; to shop windows; to sportsmen, musicians, dancers, artists, natural world-decaying and restoring, to nature controlled to dressing for the occasion, through to images of reportage even images of loss and of sheer determination and applause. The exhibition is an amazing celebration that deserved to have a permanent record of the unique occasion. As part of the Year of Culture Horsham Museum have published a fully illustrated book that not only includes every photograph displayed in the exhibition but also gives a background to the history of the culture of photography in the District focusing on its early days. Captured by Light: a photographic gallery of Horsham District’s cultural life is priced at £13.95, available now in the museum shop.

SURVEY ON END OF LIFE CARE

S

t Catherine’s Hospice is producing the biggest ever survey on end of life care in Sussex and Surrey. Shortly, you’ll receive a survey through your door to ask for your views on end of life care, whether you have received hospice care or not. Jackie Chipps is a St Catherine’s community nurse caring for people in Horsham. Here she shares why it’s so important you have your say. “Every day, I have the privilege of caring for people in our community as they reach the end of their lives. My colleagues and I nurse our neighbours - the assistant in the corner shop, the refuse collectors who pick up our household waste, and the school teacher who educates our children. It’s possible we’ve even nursed some of your family and friends. We help people manage the symptoms of their illness and work with them to relieve their pain. We also make sure their family and friends have someone to talk to at what is often a very difficult time. For eight in ten local people, we provide this care in the comfort of their own homes. Homes all around you. Many people choose to be looked after at home as it’s the place they feel most comfortable. But right now, we know that we aren’t even close to reaching every person who needs us. In fact, we can currently only help one in three local people who need our expert support. We want to change this, so we’re building a new hospice in Pease Pottage to help us reach more people in our community. And to make sure that in the future nobody in East Surrey and West Sussex has to face death and loss alone. But building a new larger hospice is only

30

JUNE/JULY 2019

part of the solution. We also need to expand our services and, to achieve that, we need to know more. We need to know what you think about end of life care in our area and what you think needs to be different. I know what it’s like when you get lots of things through the post but when you receive our survey please don’t just throw it away. Please take just 10 minutes to fill it out. Even if you need to put it aside and come back to it later. Completing our survey is vitally important because it will help us develop our services. And it will give you a unique chance, the first of its kind locally, to share with us the type of care and support you think you, your family, friends and neighbours may need from us in years to come. Whatever your experience of end of life care has been you’ll have something valuable to tell us. It’s only thanks to the support of people like you that my colleagues and I can be there to provide care at the hardest of times. And knowing it’s your support that allows us to do this makes our jobs even more special. By sparing just 10 minutes on our survey when it arrives at your home, you can help make sure we’re there to provide care to many more local people in years to come. There’s no better reason to pick up your pen!” If you would like additional copies of St Catherine’s survey please contact Isabelle Taylor, Individual Giving Fundraiser at St Catherine’s, on 01293 583059 or alternatively please visit: www.bit.ly/StCatherinesHospicesurvey to fill out the survey online. Wherever possible we ask that you complete the postal survey.

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH NEEDS HELP

J

unior Neighbourhood Watch (JNHW) is a very successful and popular project package, acclaimed by Sussex Police, designed for 10-11-year-old children (primary school Years 5-6). The delivered package helps the children to gain an understanding and practical skills to deal with current neighbourhood issues, to make them aware of their personal safety and how to improve it. We build upon the children’s already well developed observation skills, which in our experience have been demonstrated to be far superior to those of adults! JNHW has been created to: • Show young people that they can make a difference; • Encourage the development of practical skills, to address young peoples’ understanding of community issues and how to make their community a safe place; • Help children grow into responsible citizens, ideally with families, grandparents and friends fully supportive of the aims and objectives of Neighbourhood Watch. JNHW is designed to be run as a voluntary after school activity for one hour per week, usually for six weeks but some flexibility is available. Sessions are run by Neighbourhood Watch volunteers with help, where possible, from Sussex Police, local authority staff, county Emergency Planning staff and volunteer Magistrates. The children clearly love the course and the volunteers find it a rewarding experience. Tony George who has organised the JNHW so successfully for a number of years is in his late 80s and understandably, would like to step back from the organisation of this important scheme. He is hoping that some of you can volunteer in order that JNHW can

continue to do the good work that it has done so effectively for years. Free training, (teaching experience is not required) and the support of experienced leaders is available. Helpers will be required to undergo an Enhanced DBS check, which we will pay for. W

ith the ever increasing strain on the resources and priorities placed on Police Forces across the country, the National Neighbourhood Watch Network (NWN) now plays a vital partnership role with Sussex Police, and other Agencies, to ensure the ongoing safety and well-being of our communities and residents. We should be able to feel safe in our homes and communities, relax with family and friends without fear of crime. However, in this day and age, the reality is that many of us may feel isolated or vulnerable in our day-to-day lives; Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) can help alleviate such isolation and vulnerability. Members of NHW street schemes play a vital role by being watchful and sharing messages that keep us safe. Sharing information with the Police and your neighbours is a proven way of ensuring potential threats to our way of life are kept to a minimum. Many people say that NHW members are “curtain-twitching busybodies” with nothing better to do than spy on their neighbours! Nothing could be more untrue!

NHW helps ensure that everyone in a community, from the very young to the very old, are as safe as we can help them be. NHW helps with protecting our homes, communities and loved ones; NHW provides information about making our homes and property safe, contact details for helping those with worries about the young and old and for reporting crime or suspicious activity. NHW can also help provide street signs, door and window stickers to inform others of NHW schemes and to deter cold callers. All in all, NHW schemes help connect communities and help neighbours look out for each other. You can find out more about NHW activities and schemes in the Horsham District, including joining an existing NHW scheme or setting up a new scheme by making contact by any of the following means: www.horshamnhw.btck.co.uk - HDNHWA

www.ourwatch.org.uk – OurWatch - to see NHW schemes in your area horshamnhw@gmail.com – email questions to HDNHWA Committee members secretary.horshamnhw@outlook.com – email address of the Secretary of HDNHWA Quote from Superintendent James Collis of Sussex Police…"I am delighted to have such a proactive network of volunteers to turn to but who also then go about making our communities safer each and every moment of each day without any direction from us. Keeping your eyes and ears open to prevent crime in the first place, to share tips and information and make your communities safer means you make Sussex a difficult place for criminals to go about their business unseen or unchallenged. In turn we all enjoy a safer community and hopefully enjoy a better quality of life... Thank you".

SPECIAL VEHICLES TOUR HORSHAM DISTRICT In celebration of the Horsham District Year of Culture 2019, on Sunday 24 March amidst bright spring sunshine, Horsham District welcomed a tour of some 40 special vehicles as they travelled around its market towns and villages, stopping off to form static displays in various locations.

B

uilding on the success of the Piazza Italia District Tours in 2016 and 2017, the District Showcase Tour, saw up to 40 vehicles from five different Horsham Town events form a travelling cavalcade stop off in Billingshurst; Pulborough; Storrington; Steyning and Henfield in turn. It also passed through 3 district villages*. Managed by Horsham District Council, the tour presented the perfect opportunity for local businesses to open their doors and set out their stalls for the benefit of the many spectators who lined the routes and stopped off in local towns and villages to enjoy the unique spectacle. The Tour presented a broad mix of supercars, classic and muscle cars, police cars and camper vans. The cars represented a selection of those to be seen at Horsham Piazza Italia during the

Easter weekend, Horsham’s Great British Weekend in May, PlumJam Air-Cooled VW Rally, Bastille Day Horsham FrenchFest - a car display which is new for 2019 on 14 July and Horsham AmeriCARna in September. Accompanying the Tour was its own travelling band, The Downland Troubadours aboard a 1925 REO Speedwagon from the Les Searle collection which added hugely to the event atmosphere at every stop. For the most part, static display locations were positioned right in the heart of each high street, offering maximum opportunity for visitors to support local businesses. Each of the towns welcomed the tour in their own unique way. Some towns hosted fun activities for all the family such as the Italian market day in Storrington along with extra food stalls and a

Street stalls and a car themed shop window competition was staged in Henfield High Street. Horsham District Council worked collaboratively with partners across all the participating towns and villages including the Parish Councils, Community Partnerships, local businesses - Premier GT and Pilgrim Motorsports, SL2 Signs for their tour sticker service and enthusiast groups including SADCASE and Oddballs, to make the tour such a special celebration as part of the 2019 Horsham District Year of Culture. The organisers are massively grateful to SERV Sussex, the blood bike charity, who provided outriders to guide the Tour en-route, Garlic Wood Events for the drivers’ lunches and Christ’s Hospital School and South Lodge Hotel for hosting the drivers at the start and end of the day. Media services for the day were provided by Toby Phillips Photography, Silvertip Films and By Jove Media. THE WARTIME ACCOUNT OF TWO BROTHERS

DAVID JAMES PARKER

“What a super read – this book is written from the author’s personal perspective following the lives of two local boys who paid the ultimate price for their country. David’s passion for history and more importantly, his passion for bringing to life the story of these two men is abundantly evident. The story has a beautiful mix of local tales, historical facts and personal sentiment. The book is a must read for any budding historian. Although the book features a small town in West Sussex, the story is replayed in towns and cities across the country making it relatable to everyone regardless of age – my 11-year- old son was completely enthralled and loved it.”

MISSING

THE WARTIME ACCOUNT OF TWO BROTHERS

Missing is the story of two brothers lost in two different theatres of war – the story of two ordinary local lads and their extraordinary contribution to the war effort. Harry was a bomber command pilot in 1939–40. At a time when the fighter squadrons were rightly earning the gratitude of a nation, Harry and his colleagues were carrying out no less a service in their efforts to halt the advance of the German war machine across Europe. Harry carried out observation and bombing missions against army and navy targets in France and Norway. William, the older brother, had joined the Royal Artillery in 1930. After periods of duty in Aden and Hong Kong he was transferred to Singapore in 1939. When the Japanese launched their impossible attack on the jewel in Britain’s far eastern crown William was there waiting for them... but not from the direction they came... Hidden amongst the big stories of World War Two are countless smaller ones that are no less significant to those affected, but are easy for us to overlook. A glass blower and a chemist in their civilian lives, William and Harry Warman were not close. They lived separate lives and fought in separate services but shared a similar fate. Under-equipped and under-prepared they faced two powerful enemies and paid the ultimate price.

MISSING

DAVID JAMES PARKER

A

new book about two brothers from Manning’s Heath has just been launched. Written by David James Parker. It concerns the stories of Harry and William Warman. Harry was in the Royal Air Force, flying Bristol Blenheim bombers from the outbreak of the Second World War. A pre-war airman, having joined the RAF in 1936, he was flying operations over the North Sea on anti-shipping patrols, he took part in the Norway campaign, flying from Lossiemouth and finally operating over France and the Low Countries, covering the retreat to Dunkirk. Harry was shot down and killed on the 27th of May 1940. William was a regular soldier, having joined the Royal Artillery in 1930. After serving in Hong Kong and Aden he was posted to Singapore in 1939. Captured at the fall of Singapore on the 15th of February 1942 and after a few months in prison camps on the island he was a member of a party of prisoners taken to Ballale as forced labour. With the Allies closing in and their work finished the Japanese killed the remainder of the prisoners, some having been killed in air raids and some dying of disease. David has also mentioned other people who were involved in this story. Harry Jones the cousin of William and Harry Warman was born

38

in Southwater. He was killed in October 1939 when HMS Royal Oak was sunk in Scapa Flow. At the time his family lived at Lorna Doone, Worthing Road which came under the postal address of Horsham, now Southwater. Harry was the first casualty Harry Jones. from Horsham in the Second World War. Due to the boundary changes Harry’s name was not placed on the Horsham War Memorial, this only happened in the 1990’s. The author has researched this over a number of years meeting up with people that knew the brothers along with a couple of family members. Not only is this a war story, it is very much a human story. David is a chimney sweep, working around the Horsham area. This is his first venture into writing, apart from a few magazine articles. He has been interested in history from a young age. His interest was fuelled by the history teachers at Forest Boys School. David‘s interest in these two brothers stems from being given Harry’s RAF mess tunic by Miss May Oakey, former teacher at Lower Beeding who had adopted Harry in the 1920’s. Fifteen years later he ended up with Harry’s medals and a discharge certificate which gave him the key to start unlocking the story. David is also becoming known for giving talks about the First World War, Second World War Home Front and his life as a sweep. Published by Redshank Books this can be ordered on line direct from Libri Publishing at www.libripublishing.co.uk. Also available from Horsham Museum. Priced £9.99.

Tax Adept ACCOUNTANTS

PREPARING FOR BREXIT The government recently agreed a six-month ‘flexible extension’ of Article 50 with the EU, pushing so-called Brexit Day – the day when the UK officially leaves the EU – to 31 October 2019. It also published a series of advisory documents, which aim to help small businesses prepare for Brexit and its consequences. In order to access Brexit guidance that is relevant to your business, the government has created its ‘EU Exit Tool’, which comprises a simple questionnaire about your firm and its operations. Businesses are encouraged to use the Tool to determine which documents are relevant to them. The Tool can be accessed by visiting www.gov.uk/business-uk-leaving-eu.

Firms which import or export goods to the EU are urged to apply for a UK Economic Operator Registration and Identification (EORI) number, in order to continue trading with the EU post-Brexit. Meanwhile, businesses which hold intellectual property are warned that they may face changes to their copyright, patents, designs and trademarks following Brexit.

Planning for change The advisory documents urge small businesses to ‘prepare now’. They cover a range of issues, from changes to UK-EU trade following Brexit, to alterations to how firms send and receive personal data from international partners. Businesses which provide services to or operate in the EU may need to comply with new rules following Brexit. A business could be affected if it has a branch or branches in the EU; if it operates in a services sector within the EU; if it is planning a merger with an EU company; or if its employees have to travel to EU or European Economic Area (EEA) countries for business.

T RY Y O U R H A N D AT SCULPTURE Throughout 2019 a new sculpture by Jon Edgar will be emerging at Highwood Village. Jon already has large works on display at Lewes, Pulborough, Slindon and the Surrey Hills and you can be involved with his new work.

J

on Edgar does not pre-plan the work but rather lets the block evolve in response to the people and environment its located in. Working on site, by hand, whatever the weather, lets him see and hear some of the experiences and history that we can impart. A 7 tonne block of Portland stone arrived in February and was lifted into place next to the River Arun, being unveiled when the BMX pump track adjacent was formally opened by Horsham District Council and Berkeley Homes. The stone is being worked over 60 days, predominently at weekends, and the sculptor has goggles, mallets and chisels ready to give the local visitor tuition in safe stone carving and involved in developing sculpture. Jon said: “After 12 sessions, the role of visitors is changing from initially helping me open up the surface of the stone; getting to know the tools. Gradually, as the history, landscape and nature of the area become known, the stone starts to slowly establish its own story in response. Volunteers take on the role of

42

apprentice, helping me move into the depths of the stone and revealing the final form. Several families that were present on the first day have returned at regular intervals to see how ‘their’ stone is progressing!” If you wish to carve, visit www.horshamsculpture.wordpress.com for directions and Jon’s dates on site between 10am and 4pm. New carvers need to drop in to the Sales Suite at Highwood to sign up for Health and Safety purposes, but once you have done this once, you can turn up and carve whenever Jon is there. Those involved have been aged between 4 and 94. If you want to come and recount your memories of the Red River or the High Wood, or just look at the sculpture - then Jon will welcome your thoughts - and on how the forms of the stone appear to you. The more input, the more chance of this work being a real legacy for Highwood Village. You can also follow @massform on Twitter or @thejonedgar on Facebook and Instagram.

tef has lived in Horsham since 2004 when he arrived from South Africa. The beautiful countryside of Sussex and the South Coast was the inspiration to develop a passion for photography and catalyst to explore more of the UK and abroad. Once a year, a return to South Africa to visit family provides the ideal opportunity to visit game reserves and enjoy the wildlife and “Big Five” in nature. Now he doesn’t travel anywhere without his camera gear and early morning starts to watch the sun rising at dawn or setting late in the day are well worth the effort and create stunning light and colours. The brilliant local museum at Horsham is a fantastic showcase of the history and

development of the area and Stef is delighted to collaborate with Horsham Museum as a gallery for his work. Stef has decided to use the topic “Scapes” for his first exhibition and his images of land-scapes, sea-scapes, sky-scapes portray a visual escape for the eye and mind. As well as landscapes, Stef enjoys portrait & wildlife photography and is training for commercial operations with drones for photography and videography. orsham Montessori Nursery, in Bennetts Field, Horsham, have won a national competition run by the Montessori St Nicholas training organisation to celebrate how nurseries are using gardening in their Montessori practice. The nursery is delighted to have won tickets for two teachers to attend the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. There will be a special garden at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show celebrating the work of Maria Montessori, as 2019 marks one hundred years since she first bought her pioneering teaching methods to the UK. The garden design will emphasise the principles of childfirst education. There will be two greenhouses featuring cutting-edge hydroponic technology where children can grow micro vegetables and leaves. The designer, Jody Lidgard, commented, “The design offers an engaging space to nurture children, teach them about the natural world and allow them to explore horticulture in their own way.”

The nursery submitted photos showing how they have been exploring growing plants through hydroponic methods by placing bulbs and dogwood cuttings in water. The children kept a careful watch to see if there were any changes to the bulbs or the cuttings, and were very excited to see roots growing. The nursery also sent photos showing the new willow dome growing in their sensory garden, which will provide a beautiful shady space for the children to explore, as well as being a peaceful, natural area for circle times and storytelling. The children will be involved in weaving the willow as it grows, providing hands-on experience in using natural materials to create interesting spaces. Jacky Brown, Manager at Horsham Montessori Nursery, said, “We’re very lucky to have our own allotment plot right next to the nursery, and we’re thrilled to have won this competition recognising our commitment to gardening and growing plants.” www.montessori-uk.co.uk

Natalie Hughes, Sales Manager for Bellway South London, said: “We were very keen to support the Classrooms for Kenya project as soon as we learned of it, so all the credit has to go to Oscar Milne, the student at The Weald School who first brought this to our attention. “We hope that our support of the project will help to attract more donations which will help the students here achieve their ongoing goal of providing more safe learning environments for Kenyan schoolchildren.” For more information on the Classrooms for Kenya project, visit classroomsforkenya.org.uk

e have been following the Montessori method at Horsham Montessori nursery for over twenty years. Montessori is a child-centred educational approach based on scientific observations of children, which has been used in the UK for over 100 years. Maria Montessori was born in Italy in 1870, and graduated as a doctor, which was very unusual for a woman at the time. She became an expert in paediatric medicine. In 1907, she led a project to teach disadvantaged children in Rome, and then went on to develop a unique approach to education based on many years of careful and detailed observation. Maria Montessori said, “The most important period of life is not the age of university studies, but the first one, the period from birth to the age of six. She believed that the best way for children to learn was within a planned, structured environment with activities that stimulate the senses and occupy the mind. Her insights and approach to child development have been enormously influential all over the world. One of our parents recently commented, “The Horsham Montessori team are highly-trained professionals who have a deep understanding of how children develop. Their genuinely childcentred approach is innovative and refreshing. If you’d like to find out more about the nursery, please contact us on 01403 750504, info@montessori-uk.co.uk or visit our website at www.montessori-uk.co.uk

viewing decks, could get up close to the aircraft and enjoy the eclectic mix of new jetliners and old propeller airliners. Tom Singfield, ex-Gatwick Air Traffic Controller and a fan of all classic airliners, has long dreamt of a book showcasing the glory days of

etired Gatwick Air Traffic Control Officer, Tom Singfield, has just published his fifth book about aviation. Previously he has written books on commercial airliners both current and classic and in 2014 he co-authored a major work on the history of aviation in Bermuda. “Classic Gatwick Propliners” is the result of over 30 years of research and collecting top quality colour images. The book is a celebration of all the wonderful propeller-driven airliner types, civil and military, that operated from Gatwick for the first 20 years after its re-opening as London’s second major airport in 1958. By the late 1970s, the majority of movements at Gatwick were flown by jetliners and the older propeller-powered types such as the Viking, Hermes, Ambassador, Argonaut, Britannia, Bristol 170, Heron, Dove, Commando, Constellation, Convairliner, Canadair CL-44, Stratocruiser, DC-3, DC-4, DC-6 and DC-7 were mostly just memories with only the occasional sighting of a rare survivor. All the above types are illustrated in a

variety of colour schemes, accompanied with lengthy and informative captions. The book has a foreword by Peter Villa, who was the Managing Director of Gatwick-based British Island Airways in the 1970s. “Classic Gatwick Propliners” will remind readers of days when air travel was very different to today’s airport sausage machine. Visitors to our local airport were actually welcomed and were able to watch the airport activities from spectator decks. The 144-page all-colour book is published by The History Press and retails at £20.00. It was formally launched back in April at the LGW2019 International Aviation Enthusiasts Fair at K2 Crawley. ut the pork into cubes. Heat the sugar and vinegar in a pan over a low heat until the sugar melts. Add the fish sauce and cool. Tip in the pork and mix well so that all the cubes are covered in sauce. Heat the barbecue, or a griddle pan or grill. Thread the pork and pineapple onto skewers, alternating pieces with the pepper and Spanish onion. You can use whatever onions you have but Spanish are more delicate in flavour and sweeten nicely when grilled. Barbecue or griddle the skewers for 34 mins each side (you may need to cook them for longer if griddling). Serve with rice or slide into pitta pockets.

HELP TO BUY ENABLES MORE SPACE

B

uying a three-bedroom property seemed a near impossible purchase for first-time buyers Kayleigh Stevens (29) and Josh Morris (28). Believing it wouldn’t be within budget or that they wouldn’t be able to afford it, their initial plan was to aim for a twobedroom home and upsize later, when necessary. However, thanks to the Help to Buy scheme, Kayleigh and Josh were able to purchase the three-bedroom semi-detached house of their dreams at Berkeley Homes’ Broadacres development in Horsham, West Sussex. Having previously been living with Josh’s parents, the couple who both work in sales, moved into their new home in June 2018 and are now expecting their first child in July. Kayleigh comments: “I have been renting since I was 18, but a year before we purchased our new home, I moved into Josh’s parent’s house with him in an attempt to save for a deposit. We were each living on £50 a week and anything we didn’t spend, we put straight back into our savings towards a house of our own. Josh is originally from Horsham and grew up there, so we both decided it was ideal place to start our home search.” Josh comments: “We started by looking online and came across Berkeley’s Broadacres development and were sold almost instantly! After calling the marketing suite to arrange a viewing, we discovered all the two-bedroom homes in the first phase had unfortunately been sold, however they had just one three-bedroom home left in the current phase. “As we were so keen on Broadacres, we were advised to take our chances and speak to the mortgage advice service, who told us to our surprise we would be able to afford a threebedroom home, through the Help to Buy scheme. The sales lady at the marketing suite stayed until 7pm that night so that Kayleigh and

Kayleigh and Josh at Broadacres by Berkeley Homes.

I could visit. In less than an hour, we had viewed the show home, which was beautiful, and put down a deposit.” Kayleigh adds: “With the added Help to Buy loan of £80,000, our mortgage is £300,000. Monthly we pay £1,034 which is ultimately cheaper than renting. We’re so happy we’ve got more monthly spending money and a gorgeous home in a fantastic location. We love our home – it’s got a high-specification and the attention to detail is great.” Southwater boasts an attractive village centre which combines modern amenities with traditional charm. Everything you need is on your doorstep including a supermarket, doctors’ surgery and there are plenty of dining options at the nearby market town of Horsham.” Kayleigh comments: “Broadacres is open, spacious and very green with a very friendly neighbourhood. In the summer, Berkeley organised a BBQ on the green and we attended Christmas drinks in the marketing suite, which was a lovely way to meet and get to know our neighbours. Broadacres is minutes from town and Horsham train station is 10-15 minutes, ideal for both our commutes to work and getting into London.” Prices at Broadacres start from £399,500 for a three-bedroom home. ummer is here and with the warmer weather we need to be careful to avoid heat stroke in our pets. Overweight animals, flat faced breeds and active working dogs are at greater risk. Unlike humans, dogs only have sweat glands in their feet and around their noses and therefore rely on panting to cool themselves down but in hot or humid weather this may be ineffective. Signs of heatstroke in the dog include panting heavily, dark red gums and tongue, rapid heart rate, drooling, vomiting, diarrhoea, staggering and in severe cases collapse, seizures or loss of consciousness. Top tips to prevent heatstroke in your dog: • Walk at cooler times of day (i.e. dawn and dusk) • Never leave your dog in the car • Make sure water and shade are available in the heat of the day (cool mats/vests and fans may also be useful) • Longhaired breeds may benefit from a haircut If you are concerned your dog is suffering from heat stroke phone your vet for advice and an emergency appointment. Remove your dog from the hot environment, attempt to cool your dog by showering with tepid (not cold) water and cover with soaked towels, offer water to drink and travel to the vets with open car windows to create a breeze. Don’t forget cats and small furries may also be affected by heatstroke so it is also important to ensure they are kept cool in the summer months.Tel: 01403 791011. www.maltmancosham.co.uk

FOOD FOR THOUGHT By Jeanette Mercer

M

ost of us will have some childhood memory about being told to eat what was put in front of us. Whether it’s to eat vegetables if we want dessert, to think of starving children overseas, or simply out of courtesy to the cook, many children have been bribed, cajoled or even punished in relation to food. Perhaps that’s partly why, as grown adults, choice around what we eat is so important. There are even diets that advocate leaving something on the plate - just to prove that we have the willpower to do so. Attitudes to eating habits are certainly very personal - but food waste isn’t. West Sussex County Council estimates that almost a third of the average rubbish bin is food waste - which is the equivalent of nearly 20 rubbish trucks every day! Food waste is one of the most depressing kinds of waste. There’s the wasted effort and resources in producing it, wasted transport and packaging, it wastes your money - and as if that isn’t bad enough, at the same time there are people in our society going without food. Kinder Living is all about finding ways to actively do something about environmental issues, so here are some suggestions for how to cut down on food waste in your home. Plan ahead. We know that’s easier said than done in a busy life, but even something as simple as having an ongoing shopping list can help. One the favourite apps on my phone is a simple list called Shopping UK, which even sorts items into the isles of a typical supermarket. Get used to buying what’s on your list rather than wandering every isle. And of course, if possible avoid shopping when hungry! Avoid ‘offers’ such as ‘buy one get one half price’ unless you can freeze

or share the extra, or it has a long shelf life. Make the most of fruit and vegetables that are in season. They usually have the best taste and will be cheaper - or even free if you swap with friends or neighbours. Try growing your own. Whilst not everyone has a big garden, it’s amazing what a few pots can produce. Items like salad leaves are quick and easy to grow - and who hasn’t had to throw away a wilted bag of lettuce at some point?! Learn to love your freezer and feed it with variety. Some fruits and vegetables come out of the freezer as good as they went in. Others are not quite the same but that doesn’t matter if you’re making soups, stews, smoothies or looking for a filling for a pie or crumble. Check out social media for local food sharing groups - a great way for neighbours to pass on unwanted items, or try the Olio app for mobile phones. There are various useful websites where you can search for recipes to use up a particular item - try www.lovefoodhatewaste.com and www.bbcgoodfood.com. We also have an active local facebook group called Waste Not Want Not who are full of great ideas. For more information on Kinder Living see our website: www.kinderliving.co.uk
