HORSHAM DISTRICT COUNCIL
NEW SCHOOL PLANNED
H
orsham District Council is pleased to announce that a planning application has been submitted for a new school at the North of Horsham development site. Outline permission was granted for the development of the North of Horsham site in 2018 and this included the provision of education facilities. The current application is the Reserved Matters application (ref: DC/19/1730) to assess the details of the school, including its design and layout. The new school has been brought forward by the Department of Education in consultation with Legal and General, who are the applicants for the whole of the site. This school will be a new Bohunt school and will provide a nursery for 50 pupils, a primary school for 420 pupils; including a reception, and a secondary
school for 1200 pupils. The school would also include a separate sports building, multi-use games areas and sports pitches. Works are expected to start on site this winter. Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for Planning and Development Cllr Claire Vickers said: “I am delighted that we have reached this milestone in the development of a new school site for Horsham. “Horsham District is in urgent need of school places and this new school will go a long way to addressing this need.” Currently, Bohunt Horsham are occupying temporary accommodation at Hurst Road in the town. It is anticipated that they will move into their brand new accommodation at the North Horsham site in September 2021.

SUSSEX GREEN LIVING
REPAIR CAFE LEADING THE WAY
W
ith climate change in the news daily, heatwaves, the hottest July date ever recorded, wettest August and now the Amazon ablaze, who would blame people to despair. Help is at hand to Horsham District residents, on the first Saturday of every month at the Horsham Repair Café. Not only do the volunteers offer repairs, refills and recycling advice but they give clean energy advice and switching and climate change solutions. Governments have been talking about climate change since the early 90s, it is only now in 2019 that we are seeing fast escalating action, with more than half the UK’s principal local authorities having declared a climate emergency in the last eight months. The Horsham Repair Café run by Sussex Green Living with the help of the Horsham Quakers and lots of volunteers are stepping up to this climate crisis. Carrie the co-founder of the Horsham Repair Café and founder of Sussex Green Living says “Switching to clean energy is part of the solution within everyone’s grasp and is the biggest action anyone can take in the fight against climate change”. At the Repair Café she helps people switch to clean energy providers at the Repair Café. She adds “Everyone (bar one household) I have helped to switch has saved between £90 and £366 in their first year. So surely it is a no brainer to change”. Catherine Edminson one of the volunteers added “What many people do not realise is wind turbines and solar farms, as well as power stations all feed their energy into the National Grid, like rivers running into a big pond. When you switch to clean energy, your supplier guarantees that however much electricity you take out of the ‘pond’, the same amount of clean energy will be put in”. In just 5 minutes you can see a cost comparison with eight clean renewable energy by visiting https://bigcleanswitch.org/SussexGreen. Please mention HORSHAM PAGES South when responding to adverts
People can do this from the comfort of their home or if make an appointment at the Horsham Repair Café, taking a recent energy bill and you will be helped through the process. For lots of other ideas on how you can help in this climate crisis and reduce your carbon footprint then download our guide ’22 Pledges to the Planet – action plan’ here www.sussexgreenliving.co.uk

Blackcurrants tend to be cheaper than goji berries and even blueberries, and they’re much higher in vitamin C and antioxidants than their more exotic counterparts. • Don’t forget your green vegetables such as broccoli and kale instead which are an alternative to wheatgrass. Green veggies are low in calories, are a good source of vitamins such as A, C, E, and K, magnesium, potassium and are high in fibre. • Quinoa is great but millet and buckwheat can be used instead. Millet is a source of magnesium, copper, fibre, is gluten free and easily digestible. Buckwheat is also gluten free, rich in fibre and protein, and can help prevent a sudden spike in blood sugar. Expensive exotic superfoods can (but don’t have to be) part of a healthy diet. Eating simple seasonal whole foods in the form of local vegetables, fruits and whole grains, as well as good quality organic eggs, free range meats and wild fish, will give you a lot of the “super” benefits and will provide plenty of nutrients for your body to thrive and feel good. www.annapinnock.co.uk

LOCAL FIRM NOMINATED FOR AWARD Horsham-based Indigo Tax & Accountancy are flying the flag for the town, having been shortlisted for the prestigious British Accountancy Awards to be held at the end of September, in the ‘Small Practice Innovation of the Year’ category.
I
ndigo provides accountancy and taxation advice and support for individuals and small to midsized businesses from all industries, from all over the Teresa Noon. UK and even abroad, but they are perhaps best-known for the specialist service they offer for clients working within the entertainment industry. The firm was born with a view to moving accounting away from the formal and business-like and making it more approachable. Managing director and founder Teresa Noon recognised a need for a transparent, clear and jargon-free accounting service for everyone in business, including those that generally had a limited interest in numbers and figures, but whose financial success in their chosen field required that they kept on top of their accounts. From the get-go, Indigo flipped traditional accountancy on its head and, as a practice that has always been ready to embrace technology, Indigo is eager and ready to welcome the new ‘Making Tax Digital for Vat’ initiative, having been diligently establishing processes ahead-of-the-curve in preparation for the changes it will bring, to ensure a seamless transition for their clients. Indigo has increased their focus on cloudbased software and apps and have undertaken extensive training to become experts in their chosen system, Kashflow, who have rewarded their efforts by awarding them Gold Partner status – Indigo is also involved in the Making Tax Digital for VAT pilot initiative between Kashflow and HMRC.

DRAGON BOAT FESTIVAL MAKES A SPLASH St Catherine’s Hospice annual Dragon Boat Festival returned to Tilgate Park in style yesterday (Sunday 8 September), for a fantastic day of free family fun!
T
housands of people turned out at Tilgate to watch 34 teams, made up of local businesses, battle it out to be crowned Dragon Boat Champions 2019. This included Horsham businesses; Coole Bevis, ERG (Air Pollution Control) Ltd, Fisher Clinical, Forza Doors and Thakeham based in Billingshurst. Speaking on the day, Trevor Pratt, Group HR Manager at ERG (Air Pollution Control) Ltd said: “ERG (Air Pollution Control) Ltd is delighted to support St Catherine’s again through our participation in their Dragon Boat Festival. The staff at St Catherine’s do such dedicated work, and this year’s race has even more poignancy for us as one of our colleagues unfortunately passed away at St Catherine’s in February.” Those on the shorelines tried their luck at traditional fête games like hook a duck and tin can alley, whilst younger visitors sprung into action on giant inflatables. And people made sure they looked their best with face paint and glitter, before posing in a photo booth. Visitors also tucked into tasty food from onsite vendors and enjoyed refreshing

drinks from the onsite bar. The bar was provided by Sussex Event Bars, who donated a percentage of profits to St Catherine’s. On the lake, teams showed true team spirit as they raced across the water in Chinese Dragon Boats. After a full day of races, in a tightly fought final, FFGS Golf Society powered through and were crowned champions, with a winning time of 52 seconds, which was five seconds faster than last year’s winners. Close behind, in second place, were Beemer, with Thakeham taking the third place trophy. Winning teams were presented with medals and trophies by Giles Tomsett, Chief Executive at St Catherine’s, and The Worshipful Mayor of Crawley, Councillor Raj Sharma. After being crowned champions, FFGS Team Captain, Liam Ahearne said: “We loved taking part in our first Dragon Boat race. We didn’t think we’d be that competitive but once we saw the times of our first few races, we were spurred on to make the final! We’ve been friends for years; we started playing football together and now we’re all part of

We feel so proud to support such a great cause, particularly as every person on our team has had experience of the vital care St Catherine’s offers. We joined St Catherine’s for Live at the Lake this weekend too, so being crowned Dragon Boat champions was the perfect way to round off the weekend. It was an amazing family experience.” St Catherine's Dragon Boat Festival is one of the hospice's biggest fundraisers. And by supporting this event, local people have made sure that terminally ill people in their community can receive care and support when it matters most. This community support has never been more vital because currently, St Catherine’s can only care for one in three people who need their support. With the help of local people attending events, the hospice wants to make sure that, in the future, nobody faces death and loss alone. Suzanne Davis, Corporate Fundraiser at St
Catherine’s, said: “We’d like to thank everyone who supported or took part in our Dragon Boat Festival. Your efforts take us a step nearer to reaching everyone who needs us. We hope you all enjoyed the day as much as we did!” To find out about future St Catherine’s events, or how you can support the hospice or make a donation, please visit: www.stch.org.uk.

HOSPICE HIKE RETURNS Calling all walking enthusiasts and nature lovers! Join St Catherine’s Hospice on Sunday 13 October for a challenging hike through the picturesque Sussex countryside.
S
tarting from the South of England Showground at Ardingly, a brand new venue for this year, the hike will take you through Sussex fields and past historic landmarks including the Balcombe Viaduct, Ardingly Reservoir and Wakehurst Place Seedbank. And will allow you to enjoy the changing colours of autumn whilst raising funds for your local hospice. The full hike is 13 miles, but there are also 9 and 6 mile walking routes available, and a 3 mile nature trail, making this a family friendly event. Even suitable for the dog! There will be plenty of parking on the day, and you’ll be greeted with hot food, entertainment and delicious cakes to celebrate at the end of your hike. Sophie Peckham, Community and Events Fundraising Manager at St Catherine’s said: “We’re delighted to host Sussex Landmarks Hike for a second year. This autumnal hike follows a stunning route through the Sussex countryside and is great fun for all involved. Please mention HORSHAM PAGES South when responding to adverts
We hope lots of you will join us, along with your family and friends. Your support will help us be there to provide end of life care for more local people when they need us most.” St Catherine's is hoping to raise £35,000 from the Sussex Landmarks Hike by asking walkers for a donation or to raise sponsorship. This will allow the hospice to offer expert care to even more local terminally ill people in the future. At the moment, the local hospice can only care for one in three people who need them, but with your help and support, they’re determined to care for everyone. Advance registration is £8 for adults (£10 on the day) and £5 for children. On the day registration is open from 9am at the South of England Showground at Ardingly. Ready to make your steps count? Gather your walking buddies and register online here: www.stch.org.uk/SLH or call St Catherine’s Events Team on 01293 447364. OCT/NOV 2019

THE FACES BEHIND LUMLEY & B tÜç=~êÉ=íÜÉ=éÉçéäÉ=ÄÉÜáåÇ=óçìê=äçÅ~ä=ÄìëáåÉëëÉë\=eÉêÉDë=óçìê=ÅÜ~åÅÉ=íç=ÑáåÇ=çìí> k~ãÉEëF=C=ÄìëáåÉëëW Our business is called Lumley & B and we are an independent retailer based in the heart of Horsham. The business is very much a family affair, being run and owned by Huw and Caroline Lumley. tÜÉêÉ=áë=óçìê=ëÜçé=äçÅ~íÉÇ\ We are at 33 Carfax, Horsham RH12 1EE tÜ~í=áë=óçìê=ÄìëáåÉëë=Ä~ÅâÖêçìåÇ\ Our lives prior to starting L&B were significantly different, and in great part were spent overseas. In essence, Huw’s background was 30 years in Oil & Gas – 10 years working as a geologist on rigs and in operations management in the Far East followed by 20 years in Corporate Sales and Business Development. Caroline worked in IT and Management Support within the O&G Industry for 10 years before switching sectors to education. She has remained and thrived in schooling environments for the past 15 years. We returned to the UK after 20 years in the Middle East and, while Caroline continued to work in schooling, Huw spent a year working in a garden centre, which is where he acquired retail experience. eçï=äçåÖ=Ü~îÉ=óçì=ÄÉÉå=áå=ÄìëáåÉëë\ iìãäÉó=C=_=Ü~ë=ÄÉÉå=íê~ÇáåÖ=Ñçê=çåÉ=óÉ~ê=åçïK Why did you set up Lumley & B.? For two main reasons – as an exciting and worthwhile way to head into eventual retirement and to try and do our bit to bring some character back to high streets. There are many fantastic independents out there who believe in quality, value and service but we are so often overshadowed by formulaic chain shops and giant online retailers that a stroll down any high street in the UK could be just that – anywhere in the UK. We are fiercely proud of our independence because we know what independence brings for

LEGAL ADVICE
PRESERVING FAMILY WEALTH
M
ost couples hope that their estate will pass to their children and grandchildren eventually. But for many this will not happen, unless careful arrangements have been made to protect their assets from being taken towards the end of their life to pay care home fees. To help protect a couple’s estate, the solution may be a Will incorporating a Trust. A testamentary Trust can only be executed whilst both partners remain alive. Upon death of one partner, their Will specifies that their share of the estate is placed in Trust and names the ultimate beneficiary of this share, normally the children and grandchildren. But under the terms of the Trust the surviving partner has the unequivocal right to remain living in the property and to enjoy the other assets, for the rest of
their life. On the death of the other partner the Trust comes to an end and the estate passes to the beneficiaries. As the surviving partner does not own the deceased's share of the estate it is fully protected for the beneficiaries, so if the surviving partner requires care, or even remarries, this share of the beneficiary's inheritance is protected. If the surviving partner wants to move they can still sell the property and the proceeds be used to purchase a new property; the terms of the trust remain over the new property. Westminster Law assesses the circumstances of couples and arranges the trust that will provide the best protection for them, their family and their assets. TAX TO PAY ON PENSION SCHEME nrbpqflkW=
I
am concerned that I might have tax to pay because I have contributed too much into my pension scheme. I have not received any details from my pension provider. What should I do? ^kptboW
I
f you have contributed more than a particular threshold you would be subject to an annual allowance tax charge. • Your contributions means both your input, your employers and any final salary (defined benefit) top up. • The relevant threshold varies from person to person between £10,000 and £40,000 depending on your specific details • If the annual allowance charge applies this would trigger additional tax which can either be paid directly to HMRC or in some cases via a “scheme pay election” in which the tax is taken directly from your pension scheme.
In order to assess and calculate whether you have exceeded the threshold, full details of your contributions would be required. A pension statement is a summary of such details. The circumstances under which a pension scheme administrator must issue a statement to a scheme member are quite limited: broadly, where the member’s pension input amount for the tax year exceeds the annual allowance. However, each scheme administrator will only be looking at one particular pension arrangement in isolation. This could be problematic if you contribute to multiple pension schemes.
38
OCT/NOV 2019
Further, since 2016/17 it is possible that the full annual allowance is tapered down to as little as £10,000 if your income is sufficiently high. The pension scheme provider may not be fully aware of all of your income streams so it would not be possible for them to know whether the tapered allowance applies to you or not. For either or both of these reasons, it is perfectly possible that your total pension contributions have exceeded the available annual allowance without triggering an automatic issue of a pension input statement from any of the schemes that you are a member of. Despite no pension statement being provided to you automatically, it is entirely reasonable for you to request one from each of your pension scheme administrators. When making your request, you may wish to cite Regulation 14B SI 2006/567 and or the Revenue manual PTM167300. Annual allowance and tapering computations can be complicated, if you’d like help in assessing and declaring the tax charge once you gathered the pension statements, please contact us for a quote.

HOW DOES COLOUR AFFECT YOU?
D
o you tend to always wear the same safe colours? You could be missing out on making yourself feel great! We are heavily influenced by the psychology of colour too. For example, Green strikes the eye in a way that requires no adjustment and is, therefore, restful. Using shades of green in bedrooms will aid sleep and calmness. It is the colour of balance. Orange is stimulating - it focuses our minds on issues of physical comfort – food, warmth etc, and sensuality. It’s fun! Whereas Blue is the colour of the mind and is essentially soothing; it affects us mentally, rather than physically as red does. Strong blues will stimulate clear thought and lighter soft blues will calm the mind and aid concentration. Not only do the colours we wear effect how we look and feel, but how others perceive us. The colours we like they may not necessarily be those that suit us. Colour analysis determines which colours of clothing and makeup harmonise with a person’s skin complexion, eye and hair colour. Colour is a clever way to instantly transform your look positively. Wearing shades that harmonise and balance with your natural colouring, will add radiance to your skin, making you look younger, fresher and healthier. Knowing your colours when shopping will save time and money too!. You’ll be able to build a wardrobe of outfits you love, always ensuring you can easily mix and match, and look your best! KITCHENS
KITCHEN RENOVATION ADVICE Alexander have been designing and installing stunning kitchens, bathrooms and bedrooms since 1976. With showrooms in Horsham and Worthing they are ideally located for renovations in the West Sussex area.
F
or this edition we’ve caught up with Alexander managing director Phil Beechinor who has over 35 years industry experience. Phil (pictured right) has shared with us some of the most frequently asked questions for anyone considering a kitchen renovation. Do you offer a complete service? At Alexander we offer a free design and quotation service with one of our experienced designers who will also visit you at your home. They will discuss with you your personal requirements and preferences before presenting you with a 3D design and fully itemised quotation. This will include all ancillary work and installation to be carried out by our fully employed installation and project management teams. How much do your kitchens cost? Obviously clients have varying budgets for their projects. At Alexander we can usually come up with a package to suit most budgets, although we usually suggest that 5% of the value of your home is a suitable figure. This of course is dependent on the appliances chosen, number of units, worktop choice and installation. What about the quality of your kitchens? All our British and German kitchens are rigid built and made from the best quality materials and offer comprehensive guarantees. When complemented with durable German appliances and accessories you can be sure that your kitchen will stand the test of time. What is on trend at the moment? A really popular concept at the moment is handleless kitchens. There is a huge variety of

door colours, textures as well as different handrail colours to complement different shades. For an ultra-modern look add quartz worktops, vibrant glass splashbacks and the latest specification of appliances and storage solutions. What is the most important thing for customers to remember when buying a new kitchen? Go to an independent kitchen retailer instead of a larger national company. Independent retailers are certainly more customer focused and offer a better service as their reputation depends upon it. They can also be more price competitive than you think as well as offering a better service, employing local tradesmen and offering more choice. If you require further information regarding a kitchen renovation visit one of their showrooms in either Horsham or Worthing. Call 01403 721086 or visit www.alexanderhorsham.co.uk

These emotions range from the extraordinary feeling of helping someone restore their dignity whilst recovering from cancer to the joy of nurturing young talent as they emerge from shy apprentices to confident stylists. It turns out that hairdressing performs a very wide range of functions for guests and my eyes have been opened not just by the technical skill involved in cutting, styling and colouring hair, but how vital the relationship between hairdresser and guest can be in terms of emotional support. As one of her clients once said to me in town, “a session with Mandy should be prescribed on the NHS!. So gentlemen, when your wife/husband/lover/best friend takes her/his next trip to the salon, remember it’s not just about looking good, it’s about feeling better. BOOK REVIEW
SECRET HORSHAM
T
he West Sussex town of Horsham, lying on the River Arun in the Weald, has given its name to the famous Horsham Stone, a sandstone quarried locally used since the Middle Ages for roof tiles and paving slabs. The area was known for its fossils in Victorian times and rival collectors of the day made important discoveries in and around Horsham, including three Iguanodons. St Leonards Forest on the edge of Horsham has also shaped the town, iron smelting taking place there from Roman times, as well as charcoal and brick making. In this book author Maggie Weir-Wilson reveals the hidden history of Horsham. Unsavoury tasks were banished to the Common on the edge of town such public hangings, an isolation house in times of disease and leather tanning, while the town centre was the home of several weekly markets and annual fairs. A dragon was reported to be stalking the area in 1614 and is now a symbol of the town. The area was also the home of the young Catherine Howard, Henry VIII’s fifth wife, as well as William Penn, the founder of Pennsylvania, and the radical poet Percy Bysshe Shelley. There are tales of ghastly crimes and punishment, the impact of wars at home and abroad, famous and notorious characters, writers and artists, poverty,

04 Square miles, at least 100 million years, and only 100 objects to explore and explain the rich and fascinating story of Horsham District’s Heritage. If Neil MacGregor can tell the world’s history in 100 objects, surely telling the District’s heritage with the same number of objects should be easy? But it isn’t for many of the District’s stories have lain hidden in plain sight, known to a few. Now as part of the District’s Year of Culture, Horsham Museum and Art Gallery is unearthing the stories and revealing in the full glare of public gaze the District’s compelling heritage which covers from dinosaurs to ploughmen’s lunches, from Roman roads to postal services, from cricket to workhouses and much much more. The new temporary exhibition, Heritage of Horsham District in One Hundred Objects is at Horsham Museum & Art Gallery and is on now until 12 October. An accompanying book is due to be published and launched at the beginning of October.

Working with the Horsham District Heritage Forum, the Museum asked the member organisations to nominate their 10 most interesting or important cultural objects. The replies revealed a heritage that makes the District such a fascinating place in which to live. The selection could be seen as quirky, but every object represents a part of the District’s heritage. Who knew that Bramber has a Coaching wall that was built to stop coach travellers peering in to adjoining gardens? Or that Henfield has a musical instrument- a Change eight-bell set-, a one off, that is recognised as nationally significant. Or that Henfield has a Union Jack flag that was used to drape over one of the four “unknown warrior” coffins, ready for the selected one to be interred at Westminster Abbey. Or that stoolball was a local game that took off after World War One, only to decline in popularity in the 1930s, and then to be resurrected in the 1970s. The 100 objects are like points in a compass, directing the visitor across a broad heritage landscape. The exhibition, with its

strong visual images and outline, is in effect a visitor centre to the District’s heritage, and the forthcoming book, on which it is based, will be the travel guide. The exhibition will feature over 30 of the 100 objects including cricket stumps that formed a shop- sign, a great introduction to the sporting heritage of a game first recorded in the District nearly 300 years ago. Or the Horshamosaurus, a dinosaur named after the town, portrayed through a specially commissioned painting of the creature. Also on display will be a silver inkstand, a reward for breeding Merino sheep in the middle of the Napoleonic wars, when agricultural innovation was going hand in hand with the war against France and the District’s Commons were being enclosed. This is a must-see exhibition that will both surprise and inform, and also reveal just how special is the District’s heritage. www.horshammuseum.org Please mention HORSHAM PAGES South when responding to adverts

The Unitarian Church in Worthing Road is the venue for a concert by the Aurora Duo (23rd November). This exciting young chamber duo is formed by Heather Wrighton harp and Emma Halnan flute (pictured above) who both studied at the RAM. They regularly give concerts through the country for music clubs, festivals and Live Music Now and perform as soloists and orchestral musicians at prestigious venues. They have chosen a British/French programme including works by Debussy, Saint-Saëns, Paul Lewis, Karl Jenkins, Paul Patterson and William Alwyn. SAYING GOODBYE TO CHILDREN
W
e have a tradition at nursery that started many years ago that we call ‘the whoosh’. When children say goodbye to their parents after being dropped-off at nursery, they ‘whoosh’ their parents out of the door. The parent turns around to face the open door and their child gives them a gentle push towards the door and says a loud ‘whoosh!’. It may sound strange but it really works for a number of reasons. Giving a ‘whoosh’ puts the child in charge of the goodbye situation. The child chooses when to whoosh rather than the parent deciding the time to leave. Children love the chance to send their parents on their way, rather than the other way around! Giving a loud ‘whoosh’ is fun for the children and makes the whole experience positive and enjoyable. This reduces the fear and anxiety often felt by a child being left by a parent, and develops their independence. We have had a few reports this year that many of the children who left the nursery to start school were seen ‘whooshing’ their parents out of the door on their first visits to school. This gives them a goodbye scenario that they are familiar with, and can continue during the change to their environment that comes with starting school. A positive new beginning. If you’d like to find out more about our nursery, please contact us on 01403 750504, info@montessori-uk.co.uk and visit our website at www.montessori-uk.co.uk

RECIPE
TOMATO CHUTNEY If you’re wary of making chutneys and jams start with this easy recipe Preparation time: 40 mins - 50 mins Cooking time: 50 mins Makes about 1.5 litres / 2¾ pints fkdobafbkqp=
1kg ripe tomatoes, peeled and chopped 750g cooking apple, peeled, cored and chopped 375g light muscovado sugar 250g onion, finely chopped 250g raisins 1 green pepper, deseeded and chopped 2 tsp salt 1/2 tsp ground ginger 350ml cider vinegar jbqela=
P
lace all the ingredients into a large pan and bring to the boil over a medium heat. Stir occasionally until the sugar has dissolved. Simmer the mixture gently, uncovered, for about 45-50 mins or until everything is tender and thickened. Cool, then transfer the mixture to a sterilised jar and seal. It was always the sterilising that put me off. I thought you had to have heaps of special equipment, but actually it’s quite easy.

ash the jars and the lids in hot soapy water. Rinse but do not dry them. Instead, leave them to stand upside down on a roasting tray with a raised wire stand (to allow air to circulate) while they’re still wet. Place the tray of clean, wet jars and lids into a preheated oven at 160-180ºC for about 15 mins. The trick to jams and chutneys is that the jars and the chutney (or jam) should be hot. Ladle the hot preserve into a heatproof jug to make it easier to transfer the mixture into the hot jars. Be very careful not to touch or get any of the mixture onto the rim of the jars as this could introduce bacteria. Fill the jars not quite to the top, leave a 1/2cm gap at the top between the preserve and the lid. While everything is still hot, cover the jars with their lids or top with wax paper and a piece of cellophane secured tightly with an elastic band. Your chutney should keep for about 6 months in a cool, dark place, though different recipes vary slightly.

And, committed to make running a fun and social event for all, the Horsham Run Fit members challenge themselves to better their own running performances whilst providing support and encouragement for each other. So whether you are just starting out and can run but a few paces before you have to walk, are a lapsed runner that is looking to get ‘back into it,’ or are an experienced runner requiring support whilst training, Horsham Run Fit can help you achieve your fitness goals. A COLLECTOR’S PASSION
A
n amazing opportunity, a real treat for art lovers, the new Temporary exhibition A Collector’s Passion allows visitors to Horsham Museum and Art Gallery to see outstanding art by some of the masters of 20th century Scottish art. Instead of traveling the high road or even the low road you will have the chance to see work by the four greats of the Scottish Colourists; Cadell’s Marble Quarry Iona, Fergusson’s Rue St Jacques, Hunter’s Still life with flowers and fruit and Peploe’s Kircudbright Castle. Works by Ann Redpath, Sir Robin Philipson and John Houston complement these works, high points of any Scottish art collection. With over 20 works on display, this is an opportunity to see a private collection of paintings not seen in public since they were sold. A collector’s passion showcases the works collected by a private individual who on being awarded an art prize in his secondary school, went out and bought a watercolour by the then local artist Archie Sutter Watt. That painting bought more than 60 years ago features in the exhibition, along with two others by the Galloway based

artist who taught and inspired others. Later on as the collector’s career developed, he along with his wife, sought and searched in the pre-internet era, for other paintings. When the world is open to you, you can focus, or be eclectic. They jointly decided to focus on works by Scottish artists from the 20th century and beyond, collecting what appealed, rather than “trophy collecting”, achieving as much satisfaction and delight from a Chris Bushe painting, of which three are on display, and one by Sir William MacTaggart. A collector researches and knows their collection, finds connections between works, a hoarder just acquires for the sake of acquiring. Without doubt, the exhibition at Horsham District Council’s Horsham Museum and Art Gallery is a real collector’s passion. Each work of art on display shows the collectors eye, shows his and his wife’s understanding of art, both technique, pallet and subject as well as context. Although unusual to see Scottish art in Horsham, a Sussex market town, the town and district has had many connections with the nation, from Jacobite sympathiser who preached in a local

church, to head teachers, to being the summer palace of a Clan leader and even the birthplace of Joan Eardley a major Scottish artist born in Warnham. As with all art, it crosses national boundaries as artists are influenced by others from different regions and places, it is universal, not parochial. As part of Horsham District’s Year of Culture, A Collectors Passion celebrates the impact that collector’s have had on broadening the cultural offer on the district. Without their passion the artistic life would be diminished. This once in a lifetime exhibition displays that contribution. It is a must see for art lovers. The exhibition runs between 7 September – 26 October 2019. Free admission. For more information see www.horshammuseum.org.uk. leas are small, brownyblack, blood-sucking insects that jump onto dogs, cats and rabbits and even bite humans. Adult female fleas lay up to fifty eggs per day; these hatch into larvae that feed on flea faeces and develop into pupae, which survive in the environment for up to a year and with warmth and vibrations become adult fleas. Fleas are often detected due to scratching and hair loss. If flea dirt is present, brushing the coat onto white paper will reveal specks that turn reddishbrown when moist. Unfortunately, some animals are allergic to flea saliva resulting in skin disease. Ingestion of fleas during grooming may cause tapeworm infection, making it necessary to worm your pet. Young animals can develop life- threatening anaemia due to flea infestation. Myxomatosis, a deadly disease in rabbits, is also transmitted by fleas. Treating fleas can be challenging; many different formulations are available (collars, tablets and spot-ons). Contact your vet to discuss the most suitable product for your pet. It is very important to use a species specific product, as permethrin-containing dog spot-on products are extremely toxic to cats. Treating the environment (floors and soft furnishings including the car) with a household spray is vital, as 95% of the flea life cycle is completed here. Wash pet bedding and toys at high temperatures and tumble dry if possible. Regular vacuuming is encouraged but remember to empty the vacuum after every use to prevent the life cycle continuing inside it.Tel: 01403 791011. www.maltmancosham.co.uk

TABLE TENNIS FOR 7-11 YEAR OLDS
A
n exciting new Table Tennis programme exclusively for 7 to 11-year-old girls and boys is coming to Horsham this September. Horsham Table Tennis Club is working with Horsham District Council’s Sports Development team to launch a new initiative to help youngsters develop a new sporting habit. The club is amongst the first in the country to offer the new TT Kidz programme and will hold its first session on Monday 30 September from 6pm to 7pm at its Greenway Academy home in Greenway, Horsham. TT Kidz is an eight-week programme developed by Table Tennis England to provide youngsters with an inspiring, engaging and fun first experience in the game. Children will learn all the basic skills necessary to enjoy a great game of table tennis, as well as all the benefits that an active life brings, including fitness, hand/eye coordination, building social relationships and generally having a great time! Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture Councillor Jonathan Chowen said: “Promoting good health and wellbeing is at the heart of what we do at the Council and new programmes like this do much to support this. “It’s great to see our Sports Development team working so hard to diversify their programmes to encourage as many young people as possible to try something new, get active, socialise and enjoy a new sport in such a supportive environment. “It’s a real coup that Horsham is one of the first areas in the country to benefit from this programme. “I would encourage as many families as possible to sign up their children and get them involved in this opportunity. Once signed up, all children will receive their

very own TT Kidz kit bag, holding everything they need to get started – including TT Kidz Tshirt, bat, balls and activity book/sticker album. The 8-week programme is great value, which will include all the kit to keep as well. Places are limited and expected to fill-up fast. More information can be found at www.ttkidz.co.uk.

SUSTAINABLE GIVING _ó=gÉ~åÉííÉ=jÉêÅÉê

s you read this the nation will be entering the main gift buying season of the year. Whether you’re someone who plans meticulously and buys in advance, or a confident last minute shopper, we’re hoping the environment will be high on everyone’s list this year! Plan A little planning really does help - both in environmental terms, and with the accidental overspend so many families suffer at Christmas. You don’t have to shop early if you don’t want, but a simple list of who you’re buying for and any ideas can be started well in advance. Knowing what you plan to buy saves the last minute panic and inappropriate buy. It also means you can group items being delivered from one company, and make shopping trips more efficient. Buy local Buying local where you can cuts down the distance goods travel. Shipping plastic toys and novelties from half way across the world is the kind of thing we really need less of. You’ll also be supporting local businesses and their families. Use or lose? It’s a shame for your hard earned money to be wasted on something the recipient will never use. If you’re buying perfume, potions or bathing products, try to find out what they like so you know it will get used. For eco-conscious family or friends look out for solid shower or shampoo bars, and natural or refillable products. Avoid ‘gift sets’ with unnecessary plastic packaging and extras that are just there to fill the box. I can’t count the number of plastic ‘shower puffs’ or body scrubs (neither of which I use) I’ve had in gift sets! Encourage the makers and repairers Awareness of ‘fast fashion’ and the
58

importance of repairing what we already own, is seeing a reawakening of traditional craft and repair skills. For a teenager who’s into “vintage” fashion for example, ‘how to’ or inspiring books, threads, pretty buttons or even decent dressmaking or embroidery scissors may be the perfect gift. Can you team up with other family members to put money towards bigger tools for the keen repairer or maker? The first sewing machine my husband bought me lasted over 20 years, and in that time it tackled everything from craft projects and cat beds, to making clothes and curtains. Consider buying experiences instead of stuff Tickets to a show, lessons, memberships and subscriptions - they don’t have to be the prepackaged kind, a hand written card can explain the gift just as well. If you have a special skill or know that the receiver is very short of time, why not gift some of your time? A few hours babysitting, help with a garden or home project, may be exactly what they’d value most. If your gift needs wrapping, avoid papers with foil or glitter, try reusable paper bags, or even fabric bags. For more ideas on great gifts with less waste, find us on Facebook, Instagram or our website: www.kinderliving.co.uk Please mention HORSHAM PAGES South when responding to adverts
