Autumn Budget

ACCOUNTANTS

HOW WILL THE 2018 AUTUMN BUDGET ANNOUNCEMENTS AFFECT YOU? On Monday 29 October 2018, Chancellor Philip Hammond delivered his second Autumn Budget, outlining his plans for the UK economy. The Chancellor announced a number of measures that could affect your business and your personal finances. Here we take a look at some of the key announcements.

Business measures From April 2019, small retail properties in England will benefit from a two-year cut in business rates, reportedly worth £900 million, alongside a £675 million fund intended to help boost UK high streets. The Chancellor also announced an increase in the Annual Investment Allowance (AIA), which is set to rise from £200,000 to £1 million, and will apply to expenditure incurred from 1 January 2019 to 31 December 2020. It is important to time the purchase of plant and machinery carefully, in order to make the most of the increase in the AIA. Please contact Tax Adept for further advice.

Personal measures Meanwhile, taxpayers are set to gain from an early increase in the income tax personal allowance, which will rise to £12,500 in April 2019. The higher rate threshold will also increase from £46,350 to £50,000 at this time. Careful planning will allow you to make the most of these increases. Tax Adept can advise you on the most effective tax planning strategies – please contact us for more information. In addition, the existing stamp duty relief for first-time homebuyers in England and Northern Ireland has been extended to shared ownership property purchases of up to £500,000. The lifetime allowance for pension savings will increase to £1,055,000 next year. Other measures announced by the Chancellor include a new tax on the UK revenues of large digital services companies, which will be introduced from 2020, and a tax on plastic packaging containing less than 30% recycled material.

How we can help Further details on the 2018 Autumn Budget can be found on our website, www.taxadept.co.uk, alongside a wealth of information and advice specially designed to help you and your business. If you have any specific queries about how the Budget announcements may affect you, please contact us to discuss how we can help. MESSY PLAY...

M

essy play is achievable at all levels of development and ages, it is never beyond our capabilities. Is there learning while they play? Absolutely, on many levels. Concentration, calming, motivation to pursue, sensory stimulation, creative ideas, exploration, discovery, fine movement skills, social interaction, language development…..and many more. Our sensory skills are highly developed at an early stage, so allowing the child to explore this skill leads to calm learning all round. You could give your child some homemade playdough over the holiday season. Under supervision, allow the child to add cloves, cinnamon sticks, bay leaves, and other seasonal spices. The smells of the season’s cooking will be included in the play. As the child is happy and contented, the endorphins will be mapped for the future. When the child experiences those smells in the future, happy endorphins come back to support happy memories. A recent post on BBC news explained the need for children to use their hands and experience fine motor skills…. read this article to realise the importance messy play can contribute www.bbc.co.uk/news/education46019429 Happy Messy Play. COMMENT

EVOLUTION NOT REVOLUTION

A

s the new editor of Horsham Pages South I would like to welcome you to the first issue under my ownership. There has been no change in the personnel running the magazine because Dee Ryder, Gemma Gray and Clare West will continue to deal with client liaison, sales and distribution respectively. I have been working in media and publishing for over 30 years since my first job at Reed Publications in Sutton, Surrey and have been publishing 5 local magazines in Banstead, Tadworth and Epsom. And, since I have family in Horsham, I am very excited to be publishing the only magazines in Horsham and Southwater to be delivered door-to-door and will be keen to maintain the community

feel of Horsham Pages South, Horsham Pages North and Southwater Life. I would like to thank Julie Maxted for all her hard work in ensuring a smooth transition of the business and congratulate her for growing the publications from one magazine to three and increasing circulation from 4,000 to over 28,000 homes and businesses. The magazines will continue to have no political affiliations and are open to anyone in the locality to contribute news, views and articles. There will be gradual improvements in design and content and I welcome any feedback, comments and suggestions. I look forward to serving the community of Horsham. HORSHAM DISTRICT COUNCIL

JOURNEY TO WORK

W

ould you like some help finding work? Journey to Work (J2W) is Horsham District Council’s longrunning and successful employability programme. Working in partnership with Jobcentre Plus, we help unemployed people through all sorts of challenges they may be facing in their lives, and support them on their pathway back into work. Over the past 6 years, J2W has supported over 600 people, most of whom have progressed into employment as a direct result of the programme. You may be on benefits but this is not an essential requirement, you may just need that little bit of help to get you on your way. Journey to Work can help you by offering any

or all of the following: • One to one support and mentoring • Benefits and careers advice and guidance • CV and work skills development • Job search assistance • Work experience opportunities with employers • Additional support required to help get you work-ready If you are interested in trying out this programme, please ask your Jobcentre Plus Advisor or contact: Lesley Beauvoisin, Employment Support Development Officer. Telephone: 01403 215262 | 07917 594002. Email: lesley.beauvoisin@horsham.gov.uk

WORK INFORMATION & SUPPORT HUBS

A

s well as Journey to Work, Horsham District Council also provides job clubs in three areas of the district. These WISH clubs are employment support hubs and effectively provide the same type of support as J2W but in a more social and group setting. In July, WISH Billingshurst was started by our partner organisation SETAS, run by Richard Brooks, and to date more than a dozen people have attended on Monday mornings in the Community Centre and have found the support they need to search for and find jobs. More recently, two new clubs have opened in Henfield and Southwater, with the same objective of helping local people find work. The Southwater WISH operates on every Tuesday afternoon from the Lintot pub in a

quiet upstairs area away from the main pub operation. The Henfield club runs on Monday afternoons in the Henfield Hall. The good thing about WISH is that anyone can drop in to discuss their situation, in confidence, and be assured of a warm and sensitive reception from Richard and his team. The WISH Club venues and times are: Billingshurst - Billingshurst Centre, Roman Way – Every Monday 10am to 1pm Henfield – Henfield Hall, Coopers Way – Every Monday 2pm to 5pm Southwater – The Lintot Pub, Lintot Square – Every Tuesday – 1pm to 4pm. If you’re interested, please contact Richard on 07783 222956 or email him at wish@setas.org.uk More information at www.setas.org.uk/ employment/wish-job-clubs-in-horsham-district/

HORSHAM MUSEUM & ART GALLERY

THE STORY OF ROFFEY CAMP

T

o mark the centenary of the signing of the Armistice on 11th November 1918, Horsham Museum & Art Gallery have chosen to highlight the story of Roffey Camp. Using contemporary photography, film footage, the camp newspaper, and locally-produced posters, the display aims to highlight the life of the camp and its relationship to the local area. The outbreak of war saw around 1,500 young soldiers from London arriving in Horsham. The population of Horsham in 1914 was a mere 11,500, and therefore the addition of 1,500 young men would have been a major event. By early March 1915, work was completed at the new Roffey Camp and the battalion were moved into new, purpose-built accommodation. Roffey Camp stretched from the Norfolk Arms to Forest Road, with the main entrance on Crawley Road.

10

DEC/JAN 2019

The camp was home to numerous groups of soldiers and remained in use until 1919. The human cost of the First World War was enormous, and is still felt to this day. The photographs and ephemera in the exhibition demonstrate the duality of the war. Lively, active young men signed up to do their bit for King and Country, with the support of the nation. Gradually, as the reality of the brutal conflict became clear, the joy and national pride so visible in these images began to fade. The First World War serves as a reminder of the devastating impact of war, and the tragedy of these young lives cut short in their prime. Home from Home: Life at Roffey Camp in WWI runs from 6 DEC/JAN 2019 to 19 January 2019. Admission is free of charge. Horsham Museum and Art Gallery is open MondaySaturday 10am -5pm. HORSHAM LIONS CLUB

SWIMARATHON PLANNED FOR 2019

T

he Swimarathon is one of Horsham Lions biggest annual events and next year will be their eighth year running the event at The Pavilions in the Park Leisure Centre. Over the last seven years the Swimarathon has raised over £50,000 for Horsham Lions Club which has been donated to a number of local schools, organisations and charities. The event takes place on Sunday 19 March 2019 and the closing date for entries is 4th February 2019. In 2017 and 2018 the event supported Chestnut Tree House Children’s Hospice which provides a wide range of services for children with life-shortening conditions and their families. Over the two years the event raised an amazing amount totalling £18,192.29 for the hospice. In 2019, we are supporting Jigsaw Trust which provides specialist education and support for children and adults with autism, based on Dunsfold Park in Surrey. The aims of Jigsaw Trust are to improve the lives of those affected by an autism spectrum disorder and to promote a greater knowledge and understanding of autism. Founded on the principle of excellence through continual learning, the Trust aspires to provide the highest quality of education and lifelong learning possible. Set up in 1999 by a group of local parents of children with autism, Jigsaw CABAS School now provides specialist education for 65 children aged 4-19 years. A separate Life Skills Centre has

12

DEC/JAN 2019

been established in Guildford which provides a home environment for students to increase their levels of independence by learning and practicing essential life skills. JigsawPlus, established in 2012, has recently opened its new Centre for Lifelong Learning where it provides support for 31 adults with autism aged 18+, developing their independence and essential life skills. Additionally, the Trust has been operating a number of Social Enterprises; including, GARDENworks, ARTWorks and Cafe on the Park. Cafe on the Park provides a unique environment in which Jigsaw Plus adult learners can undertake a wide variety of work experience tasks within a safe and supportive environment. Jigsaw relies on the fundraising efforts and support of the local community to ensure that they can provide the best resources and learning opportunities for their pupils and adult learners. As Jigsaw is continually expanding, the school is now in need of a new early year’s play area for the younger pupils to enjoy during their break times. The funds raised from this event will help Jigsaw to provide a fun and safe play area to help their pupils explore and develop their motor skills, imagination, balance and sensory stimulation through play. This is essential for all children to develop and understand their surroundings. In addition the staff and students at the school new lap top computers and I pads as they are crucial to

A

more effective vaccine for the over 65s is being offered this winter in a bid to keep the viral infection at bay. As older people can have weakened immune systems, they are at higher risk of suffering serious symptoms of the flu that can be life threatening. The new vaccine could see 30,000 fewer people require an appointment with their GP, as well as 2,000 fewer admissions to hospital. Ultimately this is expected to save more than 700 lives this winter. As well as those over the age of 65, the flu vaccine is also available free to those in groups at particular risk of infection and complications, including:

children aged 2 to 3, and those in the school vaccination programme, pregnant women, adults and children with underlying health conditions (especially heart and respiratory disease) and carers. Vaccination is the most effective protection we have against the virus and the best way to protect yourself. If you are eligible for your free flu jab, please contact your local GP surgery or participating pharmacy to get more information and book yourself an appointment. PULLING INTO HORSHAM STATION Are you looking for an extra special gift this season? Then St Catherine’s Hospice can help you!

T

he local hospice has chartered the famous Belmond British Pullman, the sister train to the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, to take people on an unforgettable trip next spring. Pulling into Horsham station on Saturday 18 May 2019, the impressive train will whisk guests through stunning Sussex countryside as it travels towards Windsor. During your outbound journey, you can sit back and relax as you indulge in a Bellini Brunch accompanied by live music. You’ll then have time to explore historic Windsor, including the Queen’s favourite weekend home, Windsor Castle (entry fee included) before heading back to Horsham. On your return journey, you’ll be welcomed back on board with a glass of champagne before enjoying an exquisite three course dinner and wine in your opulent surroundings. This bespoke trip has never been available locally before and offers people a truly extraordinary Christmas treat. Travelling on the Belmond British Pullman is a genuine, vintage pleasure. Carriages have been restored to the former glory of their 1920’s heyday. Over a century ago, George Mortimer Pullman, the father of luxury train travel, instructed the finest craftsman of the time to create in his words, “A Palace on Wheels.” And today, the Pullman train and its carriages continue to be just that. Give someone you love an exclusive chance to travel back in time to an age of glamour and luxury this Christmas. And help raise vital funds for local terminally ill people in your community. Tickets for this incredible trip are £420 per person. To book your tickets, or for more information, contact Hannah Shorter at St Catherine’s on 01293 447364.

STUNNING LINES A recent major donation of art work by the family of Vincent Lines, a leading 20th century British artist, has gone on display at Horsham Museum and Art Gallery.

T

he skilful pen and ink drawings portray the places and people of the Horsham area in the 1930s when Vincent was the popular head of Horsham Art School. Marking the 50th anniversary of his death, the family of Vincent Lines have made the generous decision to gift Horsham Museum some 20 works of art, including 10 drawings of Horsham and its area. Featuring key local landmarks such as St Mary’s Church, Chesworth Farm, Park House, and Market Square illustrate Horsham in a bygone era. The generous donation has inspired Horsham Museum’s 2019 calendar Stunning Lines which features all of his district images given to the Museum, which is now available to purchase. The exhibition Stunning Lines is on display in the Museum’s Watercolour Gallery, a fitting place to display one of the leading watercolour artists of the 20th century, who later became Vice President of The Royal

Watercolour Society. The family have also given the museum two oils including a brilliant self-portrait with paint pallet in hand and two watercolours of Le Havre, a medium for which he had national recognition. Reflecting his other career as an illustrator of books, Horsham District Council’s Horsham Museum have also been given a rare lithographic stone. Vincent Lines came to Horsham in his 20s to take up the position of Principal at the Horsham School of Art and under his leadership, the school flourished throughout the 1930s. It was Vincent who appointed the renowned stone letter carver and typeface designer and artist David Kindersley to teach at the school. During World War Two Vincent, who was living in Horsham at the time, was asked by Sir Kenneth Clark to join the team of 97 watercolour artists to record Britain that was

most likely to be destroyed by bombing and then by progress. So starting in the South East, they moved across the country using watercolours because Clark hoped that the scheme would help preserve this characteristic medium. Over 1,500 watercolours were produced with Vincent painting local scenes including The Causeway. After the war, Vincent moved to Hastings where he became principal of the Hastings School of Art inspiring other pupils. He also continued to draw and illustrate books including The English Windmill published in the 1950s. Stunning Lines by Vincent Lines at Horsham Museum & Art Gallery opens on 9 November until 9 February 2019. Admission is free of charge. THE CAPITOL

MADDY PRIOR & THE CARNIVAL BAND “Maddy’s voice is clear as a bell. It actually sounds as if there’s a celebration going on” THE GUARDIAN “if you haven’t seen them before you’re in for a treat” OXFORD MAIL "Maddy Prior is in enchanting form. The Carnival Band is an accomplished bunch whose engaging use of classical, folk and other influences defies shorthand definition" SUNDAY TELEGRAPH ueen of folk singer Maddy Prior joins up once again with the Carnival Band during the Festive Season for their unique celebratory show “Carols & Capers”. Together they mix renaissance, modern and ethnic instruments with a refreshing cavalier attitude and plenty of humour putting their inimitable stamps on a range of familiar and not-so-familiar festive fare. Tossed together in 1984 on a 'let's see what we come up with' basis for a Yuletide Radio 2 broadcast, what began as a one-off session in a village hall in Cumbria has endured for over twenty years and has become something of a tradition in its own right. Fortunately it shows little danger of fossilization as both parties keep coming up with new ideas. The 2001 collaboration and fifth album, of “Gold, Frankincense and

Q

Myrrh” introduced a good deal of Arabic and African-influenced music into the equation. The next project explored the lives of eighteenth century female soldiers and the ballads they inspired. Of all the festive traditions, few have stood the test of time better than the Christmas carol. Maddy Prior and the Carnival Band know this more than most, having been inspired by the music of Christmas for the past twenty-five years. Now and for the first time, the very best of these have been brought together on one album. “The Best Of Maddy Prior and The Carnival Band” collects twenty two tracks from across their career. Along the way you will find a mixture of the familiar and the less well known, all presented in a most unique style. With an extensive experience in folk, medieval, world and classical music between them, the singer and players guide us to exquisite places. Telling the Christmas story in a variety of ways, the likes of ‘I Saw Three Ships’, ‘While Shepherds Watched’, ‘God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen’ and ‘The Holly Ivy’ are revealed as versatile, striking pieces of music with words to match. Maddy Prior & the Carnival Band will be performing at The Capitol, Horsham on Monday 17th December. Further details on 01403 750220 or ww.thecapitolhorsham.com

LOCAL AUTHOR

THE FAITHFUL BY JULIET WEST

T

he paperback edition of the latest novel by local writer Juliet West (above) has just been published. Set in the Sussex village of Aldwick in the 1930s, ‘The Faithful’ follows 16-year-old Hazel as she is drawn in to the dark world of Oswald Mosley’s blackshirts. When the blackshirts set up a seaside camp near her home, she finds herself befriended by two very different people: Lucia, who is fiercely loyal to the party, and Tom, who is desperate to break away. Hazel and Tom fall in love, but as Britain is pulled towards war, Hazel’s life goes into freefall. A tangle of secrets threatens to snare her, and she must decide where to place her trust. Juliet West grew up in Worthing and studied history at Cambridge University. She worked as a journalist before taking an MA in Creative Writing at Chichester University, where she graduated with distinction and won the Kate Betts’ Memorial Prize. Juliet is also the author of ‘Before the Fall’ published by Mantle/Macmillan in 2014 In addition to writing novels, Juliet is also a copywriter for local marketing agency PMW Communications, where she uses her writing

skills on a wide range of projects. Juliet says, “For many years fiction-writing was only a hobby, and to be honest I still pinch myself when I see my books in the shops. “I just love writing in all its forms, and I feel very lucky to be able to work with words and tell stories for a living.” Peter Sutton, Managing Director at PMW Communications added, “Congratulations to Juliet on the launch of her latest novel in paperback. We’re delighted to have someone with her writing ability working with us, and I do wonder how many of our clients realise the copy for their website, or press advert, or their latest blog has been written by a successful and published novelist!” The Faithful is published by Pan Macmillan and is available to buy from leading book stores and online platforms. A S U S TA I N A B L E X M A S When you read this we will have reached that part of the year where most of us just want to hunker down, keep warm and maybe take salad off the menu for a while.

W

hen your toes are frozen and it’s sleeting outside, the planet’s needs can end up taking second place to comfort, but a few small changes can make such a difference to how sustainable your home is. Now isn’t the time to overhaul your heating system (unless you have an emergency). But have you considered using new technology to help you control it better? Systems such as Hive or Nest can be installed with little disruption and help you fine tune how you heat your home - saving both fuel and money. We use a lot more artificial light in winter so make sure you turn off lights in rooms that aren’t being used. When bulbs go, replace them with more energy efficient ones. They cost a bit more up front, but once you’ve seen the possible savings, you won’t look back. Check out our lightbulb guide www.kinderliving.co.uk/lightbulb-guide Craving comfort food? Make soups and casseroles your friend! Not only do they help warm you up, they’re a great way of packing in the vegetables (or using up ones left hanging around). For meat eaters, casseroles and stews packed with vegetables make meat go much further - healthier for you and for the environment. Now let’s talk about Christmas. The Kinder Living Team love a celebration as much as anyone (and we certainly love food, you

48

DEC/JAN 2019

should see a team meeting!) Sadly Christmas has become a season of extreme waste - but it doesn’t have to be that way. We’ve put together a whole section on our website to help keep the fun but lose the waste - here are some of the highlights. With the amount of gift wrapping thrown away in the UK almost reaching the moon (yes really) alternatives are key. Re-useable bags or containers are great for presenting gifts. Spare fabric? - try Furoshiki, the Japanese art of wrapping with fabric. If you are buying wrapping paper choose the non-foil kind (foil wrap can’t be recycled). Avoid as much plastic as you can this Christmas - whether it’s in gifts or decorations, or extra glasses for a party. Avoid short-lived ‘novelty’ presents and over-packaged gift sets. Why not treat someone to a refillable water bottle, snuggly bamboo socks or recycled cashmere gloves instead? For a guide to all things Christmassy - from trees, to wrapping, sustainable gift ideas, and how to avoid waste, look for the special guide on our website: www.kinderliving.co.uk/kinder-christmas Enjoy! Hazel and Tom fall in love, but as Britain is pulled towards war, Hazel’s life goes into freefall. A tangle of secrets threatens to snare her, and she must decide where to place her trust.

@HOME WIN BEST AGENCY AGAIN

@

Home Estate Agents have been named as the best estate and lettings agency in West Sussex by the Best Estate Agent Guide for the second year running. And they’ve also bagged 8th place for the whole of the UK, which is the best in the South East region (excluding London)! @Home were also the only local company to be rated as Exceptional in both Estate Agency and Lettings Agency services and were only one of 4 UK branches to be rated as Exceptional in all 3 judging areas. This builds on last year’s success when they came 28th in the UK as the best performing branch in West Sussex. The Best Estate Agent Guide is the most rigorous estate agency performance review undertaken, assessing over 25,000 estate and letting agency branches in the UK using independent experts and scoring against a set of performance and customer service criteria. It marks the start of an exciting month for @Home as they are also the only UK based agency to be shortlisted for 3 categories in The Negotiator Awards. The Best Estate Agent Guide and Negotiator Awards really are the pinnacle of estate agency recognition and have been described as ‘The Oscars’ of estate agency. Director Paul Davies says: “I’m absolutely thrilled with yet another recognition of how hard we work as a team and am thankful for our clients that support us. The team deserves the credit here and it’s hard to believe that in just 3 years of trading, the Best Estate Agent Guide has rated us each year as the best estate and lettings agency locally. We can add that to the British Property Awards rating us as the best in the Horsham District for 2 years running and All Agents recognising us as the best locally for 3 years running and the forthcoming Negotiator Awards shortlisting in 3 categories. As a team, we have a real passion for property

50

DEC/JAN 2019

and our expertise in online property marketing, coupled with sales excellence and a team that are willing to go above and beyond the call of duty has proved to be a winning formula and helped us grow into 2 branches in Southwater and Horsham. We do things differently and it’s nice to see that the overwhelming majority of our 5* reviews mention honesty, communication and trustworthiness as part of our strengths. Estate agency doesn’t always have the best reputation but were changing that 1 client at a time. @Home Estate and lettings Agency are a local, independently run company. Their marketing reach is wider than any other local agency which helps them achieve better sales prices. They are the only company to advertise property on all of the online property portals and in all of the local newspapers. They also run as a co-operative in that the team have a 25% profit share and is the reason they get such great reviews. Pop in to one of their branches, either in Beeson House, Southwater or on Caterways (just off Merryfield Drive) in Horsham to find out more about what makes them different.” If you’d like to know more visit www.athomeestates.co.uk

RECIPE

FESTIVE COOKIES SMOR BULLAR Festive Scandinavian cookies, though no-one seems to know their exact origins. These small spheres of butter, flour, powdered sugar and nuts, dusted with more powdered sugar for good measure are a Christmas delight. Makes: 20-24 cookies. Preparation time: 20 minutes. Cooking time: 8-10 minutes. INGREDIENTS 225g Butter 60g Icing sugar 300g Plain flour, sifted Âź tsp Salt 1 tsp Vanilla essence 100g Pecan nuts or walnuts, chopped fine Extra icing sugar for dusting METHOD

Home Decorating

Preheat oven to 200C / Gas mark 6 Cream the butter and sugar together thoroughly. Add flour, salt, vanilla and pecans, and mix well. Cover dough and chill for half an hour. Form dough into small balls (about 1 inch / 2.5cm diameter). If the dough seems too crumbly don’t be tempted to add water or the resulting cookies will be hard, just let the heat from your hands gradually bring it all together. Place 2 inches / 5cm apart on an ungreased baking sheet. Bake until set but NOT brown (8-10 minutes). Allow to cool for 3 minutes before removing from baking sheet, then roll in icing sugar. When completely cool, roll in the icing sugar again. They make lovely festive handmade gifts in pretty boxes.

CHRIST’S HOSPITAL CHORAL SOCIETY

CHRIST’S CHRISTMAS CONCERT

T

he Christmas concert by Christ’s Hospital Choral Society is one of the highlights of the festive season. The school’s Chapel setting is atmospheric, the music is sublime, and the audience joining in with certain pieces makes the experience even more exciting. After the concert mince pies and wine is served in the Dining Hall, finishing off the night beautifully. This year, the Choral Society is delighted to support Medical Detection Dogs. This charity works with a dog’s incredible sense of smell; one branch train dogs to assist people with lifethreatening conditions, while the other branch works with dogs to identify and isolate cancer

hristmas is the perfect time of year to treat our pets but can also result in an increase in potential toxins around the house. Christmas plants like mistletoe and poinsettia can cause drooling, vomiting and diarrhoea if ingested and in large amounts, mistletoe may result in weakness, heart disturbances and seizures. Ensure these plants are kept out of reach of our furry friends. With lots of yummy food we can be tempted to overindulge our pets, however fatty foods can result in vomiting, diarrhoea or even pancreatitis. Chocolate contains theobromine, a chemical similar to caffeine, which stimulates the nervous system and can cause agitation, seizures and heart disturbances. Christmas cake or pudding containing raisins, currants and sultanas can result in kidney failure. The toxic mechanism is unknown but even very small quantities can be a problem. Macadamia nuts can cause vomiting, weakness and a high temperature but again the toxic mechanism is unknown. Our pets must not be allowed to scavenge these Christmas foods. As we all know, some animals will eat anything and gut obstruction as a result of consumption of tree and cake decorations, tinsel, wrapping ribbons, toys or cooked meat bones can result in the need for surgical removal. If you are concerned your pet has eaten anything discussed in this article, please contact your vet immediately. We wish you and your pets a very Merry Christmas! PSYCHOTHERAPY & COUNSELLING

NO SHAME IN MENTAL ILLNESS

F

rom time to time we all face difficulties in our lives but how much these affect us and how we overcome them, differs from person to person. This is often because in addition to obvious suffering, there can be other events that seem ‘normal’ or minor. These can all trigger, usually unconsciously, a past trauma. It has been reported that this is the underlying cause of post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD, and that people suffering with this debilitating condition have been retraumatised. Of course, the sufferer is usually unaware of past suffering as the immediate symptoms are prevalent and sometimes allconsuming. This is also relevant to other mental health conditions and illnesses. In my experience, I

have not met anyone coping with mental health difficulties who has not experienced trauma of some kind in their background. This may be because those people are more vulnerable to abuse for example, but I believe that trauma has contributed to their lack of well-being. Mental illness is not restricted to a few. Members of the royal family, particularly Prince Harry, have highlighted their own difficulties and there should be no shame in any of us acknowledging and sharing our suffering and seeking help to overcome it.
