Business Tax

ACCOUNTANTS

SAVING TAX AHEAD OF THE 5TH APRIL YEAR END

With the end of the tax year quickly approaching, now is the opportune time to make sure you are utilising any reliefs available to you. Here, we outline some of the key strategies to consider implementing into your business and personal financial plans.

Utilising capital allowances Many businesses are able to claim a 100% Annual Investment Allowance (AIA) on the first portion of expenditure on most types of plant and machinery (excluding cars). During the 2018 Autumn Budget, Chancellor Philip Hammond announced an increase in the AIA from £200,000 to £1 million. The increase will apply to expenditure incurred from 1 January 2019 to 31 December 2020. It is therefore crucial to time your purchase of business equipment carefully, in order to make the most of the increase.

Planning for your retirement It is never too early to begin planning for a comfortable retirement. A handful of restrictions and allowances exist, and these should be taken into consideration when making pension contributions. www.taxadept.co.uk

The amount of annual pension contributions on which tax relief is available is restricted to the higher of £3,600, or the amount of UK relevant earnings. Any contributions in excess of the annual allowance will generally be taxable. The annual allowance is currently between £10,000 and £40,000 depending on your income.

Retaining profit Extracting profit from your business in a tax-efficient manner is key. The Dividend Allowance reduced to £2,000 in April 2018, and the question of whether it is beneficial to take a salary or bonus as opposed to a dividend requires consideration. A salary or bonus is generally taxdeductible for a business, whereas dividends are taken after corporation tax has been paid. However, a salary or bonus can carry up to 25.8% in combined employer and employee National Insurance contributions.

How we can help The strategies outlined above detail just some of the ways in which you may be able to minimise your tax liability ahead of the 5 April tax year end. Tax Adept offers a wealth of information and advice which is specifically designed to help you and your business. You can find further information on tax-saving measures in the Resources section of our website: www.taxadept.co.uk. If you would like tailored advice, the team at Tax Adept are happy to help. Festival, the first ever Sussex Comedian of the Year competition and the first ever project to include projections and lights in a variety of town and village locations. Commenting on the launch event Horsham District Council Chairman Cllr Peter Burgess said: “Thanks to the many of you who came along on Saturday to enjoy our launch event and find out more about how they can get involved with the Year of Culture. “The event provided a great flavour of things to come throughout 2019. What I think is particularly inspiring is that the vast range of events and activities on offer are not just for people to go and watch, but people can also take part in themselves too – for many, they will be trying things out for the first time and finding they may have hidden talents. “It’s also great that lots of the activities are completely free to attend for all to enjoy. “I would encourage as many of you as possible to check out all the activities and events on offer. Enjoy the year.” At the outset, we set out to get as many local people as possible involved to find new talents in their own communities, and to also invite in visitors from far and wide to discover just what we have to offer. This is a chance to really put us

2019

on the cultural and heritage map and gain us the recognition we deserve. The key to searching out all the amazing activities is the Horsham District Year of Culture 2019 website. Check it out at www.hdculture2019.co.uk You can also follow the Year of Culture on Twitter @HDculture2019, Instagram @HDculture2019 and on Facebook, facebook.com/HDculture2019, where you can find up to minute events listings and booking details, regular updates and live commentaries on everything that’s going on and the reactions to it. Don’t forget our hard copy programme which gives an excellent taster of what’s planned. The first programme covers off January to June and the second programme will cover July to December. Programmes are available at Horsham Museum and Art Gallery, The Capitol, leisure and sports centres in the District, Steyning Bookshop, all libraries throughout the District and many other outlets, as well as in a downloadable version on the website. LEONARDSLEE LAKES & GARDENS LAUNCHES R E S TA U R A N T I N T E R L U D E Restaurant Interlude is a new restaurant destination at Leonardslee Lakes & Gardens - the historic 200 acre estate, with Grade I Listed gardens, near Horsham in West Sussex. The restaurant is open for dinner from Wednesday to Saturday weekly, with ten tables. Bookings are online at www.restaurant-interlude.co.uk.

nterlude connects lovers of fine dining with the very spirit of Leonardslee, the finest woodland gardens in England, carefully curated for over 200 years. Every dish in each seasonal, multicourse tasting menu is designed to a huntergatherer farmer concept of food that’s foraged, cultivated and raised on the estate or close by. It is savoured and enjoyed as an intimate dining experience, a small, exclusive dinner party within the estate’s Italianate mansion house.” says owner Penny Streeter OBE. The hospitality entrepreneur, owner of

vineyards in the UK and South Africa, bought the Leonardslee estate in 2017. She has opened the restaurant (October 19th 2018) after 18 months’ intensive restoration of the gardens and Grade II Listed mansion house. The gardens will open in early 2019. Diners can feast on the multiple courses that include for example: estate rabbit, winter purslane, hogweed cider and charcoal; also fallow deer with local braai and sour raspberry; and oyster, foraged greens and juniper. Delport from his native South Africa 8 months ago to plan and prepare for the launch - from recruiting his team, which includes Chef Ruan Pretorius, to designing new kitchens, creating original tasting menus and sourcing the finest ingredients from the estate and selected local farmers. Jean has particular experience from South Africa of how to complement extraordinary tasting menus with fine wines. Guests at Interlude can enjoy a selection of wines from the owner’s vineyard at Benguela Cove, Hermanus in South Africa. In Sussex, Penny Streeter has planted 40 acres of vineyards at Leonardslee and at a second site, three miles away at Mannings Heath, where she has created the UK’s first golf and wine estate. Guests arriving at the mansion house, built in 1855, are greeted in the grand hallway with music from a self-playing piano and drinks in the bar. They are then seated together at around 7pm in the restaurant, enjoying views across acres of gardens in the steep valley below, and east and south across to the South Downs. Penny Streeter OBE is the owner of the Benguela Collection vineyards and hospitality group. It includes the 400 acre Mannings Heath Golf and Wine Estate, located three miles from Leonardslee, and Benguela Cove vineyard in South Africa, as well as four restaurants and a hotel on the Garden Route.

Chef Jean Delport.

Executive Chef Jean Delport has worked with owner Penny Streeter at her restaurant in Somerset West, Cape Town for several years. Jean trained and won awards at the prestigious Zevenwacht Chef School in South Africa. With a background in classical French and English cooking, including several seasons in Ireland, he is noted as an innovator, changing and improving upon his own menus and selection of ingredients regularly. Chef Ruan Pretorius began his career, and was finally head chef at restaurant Terroir in the Cape winelands in South Africa. Terroir is one of South Africa’s most decorated restaurants, in the top 20 of the country for 19 years running. a unique doll’s house exhibition on site. A rare colony of wallabies, wildfowl and huge carp in the seven ponds are a further attraction. The garden restoration project has been described as the largest of its kind since Heligan in the 1990s. With no maintenance work carried out for eight years, it has required a team of up to 20 gardeners working since the summer of 2017 to restore the gardens, including clearing nearly 10 miles of pathways along the steep valley landscape. Leonardslee Lakes & Gardens and Mannings Heath Golf & Wine Estate are divisions of The Benguela Collection, a wine producer and hospitality group that Penny Streeter started in 2013 with the acquisition of the Benguela Cove Wine Estate, at the edge of South Africa’s southern coast. The group now includes four restaurants and a hotel on the Garden Route.

A new Pinotage planting in 2018 brings the total of vines under cultivation to 66,000 across 16 hectares at Leonardslee and a second site, three miles away at Mannings Heath, where a vineyard was planted in 2017 to create the UK’s first golf and wine estate. Total production is projected at some 100 tonnes, 75,000 bottles of sparkling wine annually: Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier - and now a non-sparkling Pinotage. The first crop is due in 2020 and first release of wine in 2023.

LIKE A COUPLE OF INTERTWINING VINES By John Snelling

St Mary’s Parish Church from a postcard, Horsham early 1900s.

H

orsham’s oldest surviving institution is surely the Church, and St.Mary’s is the (we hope) enduring symbol of it. But where must we look to find the runner-up in the Horsham History Stakes? Surely, the prize money for second place must go to Collyer’s, formerly ‘The Grammar School’, now the College of Richard Collyer in Horsham. The foundation date of Collyer’s is reckoned to be 1532, the year that Richard Collyer (or Collier) signed the will that endowed his school. So one need not have attended Collyer’s to work out that Collyer’s the institution is about half the age of the Parish Church. Over the centuries both institutions have grown in Horsham like a couple of intertwining vines, and both have developed and changed over the centuries to such an extent that Richard Collyer and Roger of Wallingford (the first identified Vicar) would be astonished to see their respective institutions today. Collyer never saw his at all, of course - such is the fate of all testatory benefactors! It is tempting to muse that Richard Collyer’s

story is one of ‘rags to riches’, and it probably is. He was born in or around Horsham, and is first heard of on his way up as a merchant in the Mercers’ Company, the great City guild that today is the premier City livery company and one of great beneficence and substance. By the time Collyer made his will he also had amassed wealth and property, and, motivated by the spirit of the age, ‘Christian charity’ featured prominently in his will. One of his many bequests was to build a school-house for sixty Horsham boys, and although the Mercers were to be the trustees of the funds, the Vicar and Churchwardens of Horsham were to be responsible for the school’s management, which included the selection of the scholars and the appointment of the headmaster and usher. Thus it was that the Church in Horsham became deeply involved in the birth of Collyer’s, and played a major part in its development through the following centuries. To this day, the Vicar (or Team Rector, as he is now) is an ex officio governor.

LIKE A COUPLE OF INTERTWINING VINES

Although by 1532 Henry’s row with the Pope was near to boiling over, the Catholic piety underlying Collyer’s will is unmistakable. He not only left money for the Horsham clergy to pray for his soul, but also, as a quid pro quo for being educated, desired that the children at the school should do the same. The vicissitudes of the school and its relations with the Church, the people of Horsham, and the Mercers’ Company are chronicled by the late Austin Willson in his scholarly and entertaining work, A History of Collyer’s School 1532 to 1964, a treasure trove that has been shamelessly plundered to produce this article. (Somehow, I don’t think he would mind, as he was my own history master during my time at Collyer’s, and is universally remembered with great affection.) When the Grammar School was eventually built, as befits a school with close links with the Church, it lay almost within the shadow of St.Mary’s, roughly on the site of today’s St.Mary’s School. In spite of alteration and re-building, the School finally outgrew its premises in Denne Road, and new buildings were opened on its present Hurst Road site in the April of 1893. The School adopted the insignia of the Mercers’ Company, ‘The Maiden’, with the motto Honor Deo. This most ancient of symbols, probably dating back to early in the Fourteenth Century, was once thought to depict The Virgin, and it would have made a neat conclusion to highlight the connexion between St.Mary’s Church, the Company and its Virgin, and Collyer’s. But alas and alack! The Maiden probably started out as a trade sign to symbolize the Mercers’ wares, honouring the ladies who made them, and the wealthier ones who would be wearing them. In spite of the now supposed secular origin of the Collyer’s erstwhile ‘Virgin’, the school has nevertheless done its bit to swell

FIRE PREVENTION

CHOOSING A SMOKE ALARM

Y

ou are four times more likely to die in a fire in the home if there is no working smoke alarm. A lot of people forget to check their smoke alarms, so the best choice is usually the one that lasts the longest. Below is a list of the different types of alarm available. l Standard-battery alarms - These are the cheapest and most basic. l Battery alarms with an emergency light - Fitted with a light which comes on when the alarm is triggered, these are particularly suitable if someone in your house has hearing difficulties. l Alarms with 10-year batteries - Although slightly more expensive, you do save on the cost of replacing batteries. l Models with a ‘hush’ or ‘silence’ button - These buttons will silence the alarm for a short time, which can be useful when cooking. If there is a real fire giving off lots of smoke the hush system is overridden and the alarm sounds. These models will continue to remind you they have been silenced by 'chirping' or by displaying a red light. l Mains-powered alarms - Powered by your home’s electricity supply these alarms need to be installed by a qualified electrician. There’s no battery to check, although they are available with battery back-up in case of a power cut. l Interconnecting or linked alarms - Some alarms can be connected to each other so that when one senses smoke all the alarms in the property sound. Useful for people with hearing difficulties or in larger homes. l Mains-powered alarm with strobe light and vibrating pad - Designed for people with hearing difficulties, the alarm alerts you with a flashing light and vibrating pad placed beneath your pillow. l Mains-powered alarm which plugs into a light socket - This type of alarm uses a rechargeable

30

FEB/MAR 2019

battery that charges up when the light is switched on. It lasts 10 years and can be silenced or tested by the light switch. WHERE TO INSTALL SMOKE ALARMS

The more smoke alarms you have, the safer you will be. The best place to fit an alarm is on the ceiling, near or in the middle of the room or hall. The alarm should be at least 30cm (one foot) away from a wall or light. l As a minimum, install one on each floor preferably on the hall and landing ceilings. l If you have only one smoke alarm and two floors, put it where you can hear it when you're asleep - in the ceiling at the top of the stairs leading to the bedrooms. l If you have a TV or other large electrical appliance in your bedroom, fit a smoke alarm there. l West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service offer a free home safety visit (Safe and Well Visit) to advise how to make your home safer and, where appropriate, fit smoke alarms. MAINTAINING YOUR SMOKE ALARMS

Test each alarm once a week by pressing the test button until the alarm sounds. l Once a year change the battery (unless it's a 10-year alarm). l Twice a year open the case and gently vacuum the inside using a soft-brush vacuum attachment to remove dust from the sensors. If it doesn't open, vacuum through the holes. l Replace alarms every 10 years. l If your smoke alarm keeps going off don't take out the battery. If it is positioned too near the kitchen move it further down the hall. If it's not the cooking setting it off, try vacuuming the alarm as there may be a build-up of dust or dirt inside. HORSHAM CYCLING Horsham District gears up for more healthy bike rides this year.

H

orsham District Council’s Sports Development team together with local volunteer ride leaders are set to organise more healthy bikes rides this year following last year’s successful ‘Horsham District Health Rides’ pilot progamme. 'Horsham District Health Rides' are free social bike rides for starter-level cyclists. They are a great way to improve cycling ability, socialise with others and develop new skills. All participants need is a working bicycle and the ability to ride. The rides are free of charge and are supported by leaders who are trained and experienced to adapt to individual rider needs with aspects such pacing, helping groups gel together appropriately and keeping people safe.

Following last year’s pilot programme of health rides, rides for 2019 are being offered over a longer period, from February to November, and new rides have been added to the Programme. Routes around Warnham, via Pedlar’s Way to Southwater and to Sumner’s Pond in Barns Green will be available in addition to the established 6K Shelley ride route and longer two and three hour rides. There will be more emphasis on road riding during winter months and more off-road rides during the summer, spring and autumn. Anyone wishing to find out more about the Healthy Rides Programme should contact Ian Ford, by email at Ian.ford@horsham.gov.uk or by calling 07764 146338 or visit www.hdsd.org.uk and search ‘Health Rides’.

SLINFORD GOLF CLUB Slinford Four are real aces with rare hole-in-one coup

T

he odds of an amateur golfer making a hole-in-one are 12,500-1, but during 2018, four Slinfold ladies accomplished that golfing rarity. Ann Grain got her hole-inone on the 16th at Slinfold Golf Club, Maggie Jowett hit hers on the second, and Pat Taylor recorded an ace on the 16th. As the club celebrated the remarkable achievement, they also confirmed that the mysterious fourth hole-in-one hitter wished to remain anonymous. Outgoing lady captain Jeanne Coker said: “It has been a number of years since one of our ladies made a hole-inone at Slinfold, and yet this year we have had four, which is unprecedented. Four aces in a pack is the norm for card games, but for golf it is remarkable.” Commenting on her year, Coker added: “Four

hole-in-ones during my captaincy has been one of the highlights of an amazing year as captain. “Also at the top of the list is the sum of £1,400 raised by the ladies section for my chosen charity, Chestnut Tree House. “I give my best wishes to our incoming captain, Jenny Wise, and I am confident that our ladies will give her and her chosen charity, St Catherine’s Hospice, their full support.”

LOCAL AUTHOR JOHN SNELLING

MIXED FRUIT FROM A SUSSEX TREE Local Horsham author and Rotary member, John Snelling, introduces a fascintating collection of his stories, essays, poems and plays, with a dash of history and Sussex.

John Snelling (picture by John Lee).

I

magine if you will a long train journey, during which you start chatting with the stranger opposite and realise later that a couple of hours have passed easily by, full of fascinating anecdote, light and shade, wit and wisdom; an all too rare treat in our hectic but increasingly isolated modern life. You part as new friends, vowing to stay in touch. That is how I felt on reading this little gem of a book for the first time. Storytelling in an easy conversational style. ‘If you want to be a writer, write’ was never more apposite than here. John has clearly been thinking and writing for most of his life, and the range of this collection is impressive. Social comedy, local history, the use of very different voices and some subtle and moving poetry. The silver thread which runs through it all is that of a devoted and close family within and outside the Anglican church, with some deft pen-portraits of great men and womenwhomade a largely unsung difference tomany lives. As a record of vanished times,

small scale and local, itwill be an ornament to any social history collection, and it fulfils an important role in the fast-disappearing narrative on which future historians and biographers will come to rely. Amusing, thought-provoking, puckish and intimate by turns, peopled by types whomwewewill all knowfromour own lives, but never stereotypical, this is a quiet celebration of an English life which many of us will recognise with affection and nostalgiawithout everwishing to turn back the clock. Rose’s story by a Carewise care fees specialist I first met 83-year-old Rose in 2005. She was in good mental and physical health, but she had lost confidence about living on her own and wanted to move into a care home. Once her house was sold, Rose had around £218,000 in available capital. Together, we

reviewed her income and expenditure, and worked out that she would have a shortfall of £16,410 per year in meeting the cost of her care home. I obtained quotes for an immediate care plan for Rose and recommended she purchase a plan where the payout would

increase by five per cent per year. This would help to cover future increases in care fees at the home. The income payments were paid to the care home, tax-free. Rose paid £85,925 for the plan. By 2009, Rose’s care plan had paid for itself. In 2013, the plan had paid out £155,257, which is £69,332 more than she paid for it. (This is a real case with the name of the customer changed.)

ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE

Y

ou may remember, as previously declared in these pages, January, February and March are, controversially, my favourite months. Days get longer, spring is just around the corner and a whole fresh year ahead of us all puts a spring in my step. Now, I do love a wedding don’t you? Generally, they are a bit like buses - you know, one comes along about every five years. So far Tim and I have already been invited to six this year, two of our offspring amongst them! Now that is a lot of outfits! A wedding brings friends and family together with the sharing of food, wine and a general good time - you get to meet new friends and catch up with others that you might not have seen for a while. At Studio 2 we love to create a culture where we get to know the friends and families of our existing guests - we call it our “introduce a friend program”. I’m sure many of you have taken part in this before. It works like this; send a relative, friend, team mate, workmate, lover (hello!!), complete stranger who compliments your hair in the supermarket (true story), or anyone that you would like to share a present with and we will reward you both with an amazing 2 for 1 offer*. We all enjoy a surprise present so please shout about our best kept secret! Call now on 01403 255555 for more details or visit www.studio2horsham.co.uk * Terms and conditions apply

A HISTORY OF HORSHAM’S PRIVATE SCHOOLS 1887-1990

Manor aerial.

T

oday the fascinating story of the network of Horsham’s private boys and girls schools has been almost wiped from history, like chalk dust from the blackboard. However after nearly twenty years research, former teacher Elizabeth Vaughan, has rescued those faint traces left by the dust of history and created a fascinating story that lights up, like the new digital whiteboard, the history of Horsham’s private schools from 1887-1990. Horsham was a hot bed of private education. Middle class parents were deserting the state system and sending their young to private schools to become the leaders of postWorld War one Britain. Schools such as Horsham College, Springfield Park Preparatory School, Heron’s Ghyll, Forest Grange, Parkfield, The Manor House or St Peter’s School, St John’s College, Causeway School, Gringley are just some of the 21 recorded in the book. Using first-hand oral and written accounts by former pupils, adverts from the local press, prospectuses and photographs as well as a thorough knowledge of the

town’s history Elizabeth has woven a series of mini essays that tell the history of each school. In addition Liz has added the human touch by using the memories of real pupils – Mrs Monro Higg at the Causeway School wore a pink angora jumper and Miss Neve at Heron’s Ghyll was remembered as having a lovely smile and a good sense of humour. That school targeted the daughters of gentlemen who went hunting with the Horsham and Crawley Hunt, and some of the former pupils were presented at court. This reveals a hidden side to Horsham and how the town functioned in time that is so close, yet so distant in so many ways. A few of the pupils at these schools went on to achieve national and international fame, including the popular author Hammond Innes who attended Causeway School, Donald Campbell, who later broke eight world water speed records attended The Manor House School opposite, and of course, the actress Virginia Mckenna went to Heron’s Ghyll. With numerous photographs, delightful

sketches and fascinating quotes “The Best Years of your Life? A History of Horsham’s Private Schools 1887-1990” is a real treat that rewards the reader with real insights in to Horsham. The Best years of your life? by Elizabeth Vaughan is available only from Horsham Museum and Art Gallery where Elizabeth

has worked as a volunteer for over 20 years. HORSHAM MONTESSORI

OUTDOORS... WHAT AN IMPORTANT CLASSROOM!

I

t maybe February and seem a bit chilly and damp to adults, but outdoors is still an exciting environment for children. There is so much to stimulate the senses; Breathing out and making dragons breath, touching damp and cold items. These are stimulating sensory experiences to a child. Walking in frosty grass and listening to the crunch. Looking at the sky, the shades and shapes of the clouds. Squelching in muddy puddles, and looking closely at buds forming, shoots growing, and early signs of blossom. We are very lucky in our area to have coast, woodland and hills to explore these environments. Research has proven, what health benefits there are, but the educational and fun experiences are priceless. Montessori Schools throughout Great Britain will be celebrating the centenary visit of Maria Montessori to the U.K this year. To mark this occasion the Montessori Association will be exhibiting a garden at the RHS show. Suggestions and ideas from the nurseries will be followed on social media. The design will be a garden focused for children and their sensory, explorative and development needs. Something to look out for! www.montessori-uk.co.uk

RECIPE

EGGS BENEDICT WITH SMOKED SALMON Preparation time: 15 minutes Cooking time: 20 minutes Serves 4 (or 2 really hungry people!) INGREDIENTS 4 eggs, 2 tbsp white wine vinegar 2 English muffins or two bagels, halved Butter for spreading 8 slices smoked salmon, Chopped chives, to serve For the hollandaise sauce 2 tsp lemon juice, 2 tsp white wine vinegar 3 egg yolks, 125g unsalted butter, cubed METHOD Hollandaise Sauce: Pour the lemon juice and vinegar into a small bowl, add the egg yolks and whisk with a balloon whisk until light and frothy. Place the bowl over a pan of simmering water and continue to whisk until the mixture thickens. Add the butter a small amount at a time, whisking constantly until the sauce is thick. If it looks like it might be splitting, remove from the heat and continue to whisk. Season with salt and pepper then and keep warm. Poached eggs: bring a large pan of water to the boil and add the vinegar. Lower the heat so that the water simmers very gently. Stir the water a little so you create a gentle whirlpool effect, then slide in the eggs one by one. Cook each for about 4 mins, then remove with a slotted spoon. Handy hint - you will see the eggs begin to rise in the water as they reach completion. Lightly toast and butter the muffins or bagels, then place a couple of slices of the smoked salmon on each half. Top each with an egg, then spoon over your Hollandaise and garnish with chopped chives.

VEGAN FEST HORSHAM

W

ith the rapidly growing interest in the benefits of a plant-based diet, Horsham is looking forward to welcoming its first vegan fair. Vegan Fest Horsham is for everyone vegans, non-vegans and anyone who is just a little bit interested in what a plantbased lifestyle entails! The fair will be a celebration of all things vegan – from chocolates, beer, beauty products, cakes, books, household items and stalls offering general advice on a vegan lifestyle, as well as a number of catering stalls offering a wide range of hot and cold foods. There will be a series of free talks throughout the day focusing on vegan or animal related topics.

58

FEB/MAR 2019

Until recently, veganism was considered extreme and mainstream media comments were often negative. However with an estimated 3.5 million vegans in the UK, all that is changing as more plant-based options are becoming available in supermarkets, shops and restaurants. For many, the transition to veganism is triggered by awareness of the cruelty to animals in both the meat and dairy industry. For others it may be for health reasons, as it now generally accepted that a well-planned plant-based diet can bring many long-term health benefits. And for most, the decision to follow a vegan lifestyle goes hand in hand with knowing that overall it is considered a more environmentally friendly way of living. So whether you are a fully-fledged vegan or just need some ideas or a bit of inspiration for a vegan friend or relative, do come along and take a look! Vegan Fest Horsham will be at the Drill Hall in Denne Road, Horsham on Saturday 23rd February 2019 from 10.30am till 4.30pm. The entrance fee is £2.00 per person (under 16’s free) and all profits will be going jointly to The Born Free Foundation and Animals Asia (UK registered charities). For further details visit Vegan Fest Horsham’s Facebook page or email veganfesthorsham@gmail.com.

ental disease is a common problem affecting middle aged to older dogs and cats. It varies in severity from mild tartar causing gingivitis to severe tooth root infection, which can affect the jaw bone. Animals’ mouths are a source of bacteria which can spread via the bloodstream and result in infection of their heart and kidneys. These bacteria can also affect owners who come into contact with their pet’s saliva, potentially causing serious infections, particularly if they are immunocompromised. Signs of dental disease to monitor include the following: bad breath; teeth covered in tartar; sore gums; bleeding from the mouth; drooling or chewing on one side; dropping food; discomfort when eating or if the mouth is touched; loose, discoloured or broken teeth; reduced appetite and weight loss. Dental treatment is carried out under general anaesthesia and involves removal of tartar and extraction of decayed teeth. Prevention of dental disease can be achieved with daily tooth brushing. Ideally this should be started at a young age but can be commenced later in life, if introduced gradually. Meat flavoured toothpastes are available and enzymatic versions will even have some effect without brushing. Prescription dental dry foods and dental chews can reduce tartar on the teeth and water additives as well as oral rinses/gels can decrease the bacterial load within the mouth and may be useful alternatives if you are unable to brush your pet’s teeth. If you would like a dental check or advice on dental care please contact your vet.Tel: 01403 791011. www.maltmancosham.co.uk

e understand how difficult it can be to get all the information and advice you need to support you in your day to day activities. That’s why we created West Sussex Connect to Support – a website which brings together a wealth of information and resources that you can access with just a few clicks. You’ll see on the homepage that the website is split into different sections to help you find what you’re looking for. • I want some information and advice – advice and information on health and well-being, money matters, being a carer, different conditions and disabilities and much more. • I want to find things to do locally – clubs, support groups and activities where you can learn a new skill, meet likeminded people in your community, and keep active. • I want to buy products and services – equipment or services to help you stay safe around your home and support you day-to-day. Take a look around our Equipment House where you can go from room to room and discover the help that’s available. • I want to find out about social care support – you can complete an online assessment which you can use to help you plan and buy your support.
