COLLABORATION TO BENEFIT ALL

A

t the end of June Southwater Life were delighted to attend the opening of Southwater Sports Club. It has been a unique collaboration between The Fletcher Trust, Horsham District Council, Southwater Parish Council and Southwater Sports Club to deliver an extraordinary number of new facilities for the village. These include a new community building, a skateboard park and multi-use games area and LEAP and NEAP play areas for the young people of Southwater to enjoy. In addition, Berkeley Homes has also built a sports pavilion, cricket pitch, two tennis courts and two football pitches. The sports and recreation facilities have been built by Berkeley on land gifted to the local community by the Fletcher Trust. Sir Henry

Aubrey-Fletcher is the third generation to uphold the connection between his family and Southwater Sports Club, after his grandfather originally provided land for use of the cricket club, believed to be in the 1890s. Perhaps most fitting is that the newly built community building has been named after former Councillor, Laurie Apted, who has played a huge part in Southwater’s development over the 57 years that he has lived in the village. And on page 12 you can read a fascinating history of Laurie’s involvement in the village. It just shows what a positive impact one person can have when there is a desire to make things happen! orsham District Council’s Neighbourhood Warden teams worked in partnership with Sussex Police to promote and support National Drugs Awareness Week from 24 to 28 June, offering advice and safeguarding information across the Horsham District about the dangers of drugs use. In Pulborough the Wardens spent an afternoon at Pulborough train station, distributing information and talking to some 30 residents about how drugs can affect people’s lives. The Horsham wardens attended a local youth support club where they discussed the harm illegal drugs can cause. They also held a street briefing in the Carfax in partnership with the police, undertook three joint patrols with Police Community Support Officers to drugs hotspot areas and patrolled Horsham Park and train station, engaging with the community about reporting drug use and how to access local support organisations. In Billingshurst the wardens dropped into the youth club and visited areas where young people congregate, in order to promote drug awareness. The Storrington wardens spent time at the bus station where the older school children get off the coaches, handing out drugs information leaflets. They also gave out information to any other young people they saw around the village. In Southwater, the wardens gave a drugs awareness presentation to the Southwater Youth Group. The young people were keen to engage in related activities and discussions around identification of illegal substances and the harmful effects. The wardens also attended Christ’s Hospital train station handing out information leaflets to both young people and adults. The wardens in Steyning, Bramber and Upper

Commenting on the activities taking place Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for Community and Wellbeing Cllr Tricia Youtan said: “Drug misuse is a growing issue and I am pleased that as a council we made a real success of the Drugs Awareness Week with so many of our Neighbourhood Wardens engaging in so much activity across our local area. In addition to the warden activity, on Thursday 4 July there was a free information briefing session in Horsham’s Park Barn for parents of secondary school age children, regarding drugs and criminal exploitation. The evening was run by PC Darren Worsfold and Kirsty Lindgren from WSCC’s Children’s Services, with support from the council’s Anti-Social Behaviour team. an Hadley is a local self-taught landscape artist who specialises in acrylic paintings of The County of West Sussex. He has found inspiration in its beauty and variety and paints scenes of its historic old market towns such as Horsham, the rolling countryside of The South Downs and its vibrant coast. Ian is inspired by light, shade and space and it is the atmosphere that they create that he endeavours to capture and convey to the viewer, creating a positive emotional response. Ian has been a member of various art societies and recently has participated with Horsham Artists Open Studios in their Annual Art Fair and

a Pop up Shop in Swan Walk during the last Horsham Arts Festival. He has exhibited and sold his work widely in such various venues as The Mine Gallery Carshalton, Chelsea Town Hall, Fairfield Halls Croydon and The Menier Gallery Southwark. Ian’s beautiful paintings, as well as mounted prints, will be available to purchase for the duration of the exhibition. This is a wonderful opportunity to own a beautiful artwork, depicting our wonderful region. HEALTH & WELLBEING

HYDRATION: WHY ITS SO IMPORTANT

I

t’s summer time and the sun has finally arrived. With the smell of BBQs wafting in the air, our thoughts turn to what refreshing beverage we should have to wash down those succulent sausages. Staying hydrated during hot weather is vitally important to our overall health and wellbeing but not all liquids hit the spot. On average, water makes up between 60% and 75% of our body weight, depending on age. And without it you’ll only be able to survive for a few days, compared to a few weeks without food. So, why is water so important? • It helps us to regulate our body temperature through sweating and breathing. • It can assist in lubricating our joints. • With 75% of the brain made up of water, we need it for optimal brain function. • It will aid in eliminating waste from the body through the urine, breath and stool. • Water helps with the digestion process by forming saliva and breaking down food. If the thought of drinking water isn’t exciting to you, can always add a little bit of kick to it by investing in a reusable water infuser and add lemon, orange, cucumber, lime or mint for flavour. For most people, water is still the best thing to drink, but non-alcoholic drinks can also help you stay hydrated. Tea (black, green, herbal etc), coffee (in small amounts), milk, sport/electrolyte drinks, fruit juices, and soda are all sources of water. If possible you want to avoid having a high intake of fruit juices and fizzy drinks due to their high sugar content. And

16

AUGUST 2019

while the alcohol is a staple part of most BBQs it won’t really hydrate you. This is because it has a diuretic effect, which means it increases urination resulting in you losing more water which increases the risk of dehydration. Therefore, for every alcoholic drink, have at least one glass of water to help replenish your water stores. Simon Woodhams. But it’s not all about liquids. Food can also be high in water with fruit and vegetables counting towards your water intake. In fact, about 20% of your water intake comes from food! So how much water should you drink? The amount depends on your age, environmental conditions, weight, activity levels, overall health and food intake. The NHS Eatwell Guide suggests 6-8 glasses of fluid a day, but if the weather is hot or you’re exercising then you may need to drink more. An easy way to check if you’re drinking enough is to look at the colour of your urine – it’s not pleasant but it’s effective. Pale and clear means you’re well hydrated, but if it’s dark you need to drink more. Other signs you’re not drinking enough include dry mouth, thirst, muscle cramps, mild constipation, light-headedness, headache, lack of energy or changes in blood pressure. So go out there, enjoy the sunshine and don’t forget to take a bottle of water with you. www.annapinnock.co.uk

HORSHAM’S FIRST SPANISH FESTIVAL Sunday’s first Horsham Spanish Festival, Feria de Horsham, played out to an enthusiastic audience who packed the town and enjoyed exciting displays of Spanish music, dancing and street food in the town’s Carfax from noon to the early evening.

O

rganised by Horsham District Council with a new partner, Feria de Londres, the show came down from London’s South Bank and really captured the spirit of the spring Spanish festivals. Throughout the day various styles of hugely impressive Spanish dance and music were enjoyed across both bandstand and ‘amphitheatre stages’ with many colourful costumes and audience participation much in evidence. Local Spanish business, Vacalola, ran a popular children’s craft activity, which together with face painting, a caricaturist and a dress up photo booth meant there was plenty for the whole family to enjoy. There were queues at the food stalls for most of the day, with several of the traders selling out before the end. The Council is asking for event feedback with an opportunity to win a bottle of Cava from The Horsham Cellar – access to the

survey is via the event page on www.horshamtimewellspent.co.uk The Feria was the fourth in a series of four Horsham town spring events billed as ‘Horsham- Life’s a Beach’ supporting Horsham District Year of Culture 2019. Based on feedback received by the Council so far many who visited would like the Feria to return along with the new Caribbean festival which took place a few weeks earlier. Commenting on the event, Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for Horsham Town, Cllr Peter Burgess said: “Feria de Horsham was another great event for our town centre which got everyone involved. “During this special Horsham District Year of Culture for 2019, it was an event which really captured the vibrant culture of Horsham. “Please give us your feedback as we’d love to bring it back next year.”

arvest mites are the tiny, orange, sixlegged larvae of the mite, Trombicula autumnalis. In late summer and autumn, particularly on dry and sunny days, they congregate in groups in long grass and vegetation. The larvae become parasites when they come into contact with passing mammals (including dogs, cats and even people). After attaching by thrusting their small hooked fangs into the skin surface, they inject digestive enzymes into the cells which break down into liquid and then get sucked up. This feeding process continues for two to three days until the larva has increased in size by three or four times, when it will drop off to complete the life cycle. Areas with little hair and where the skin is thin are most commonly affected, such as between the toes, the ears (Henry’s pocket – a little pocket of skin on the side of the pinna), face, armpits and tummy. Sensitive animals can have a severe skin reaction to the digestive enzymes injected by the larvae resulting in itching and skin inflammation. Secondary bacterial infection can also occur due to the irritation caused to the skin by scratching. Harvest mites are often recognisable as orange ‘dust’ on affected areas, but a diagnosis can be confirmed if your vet takes samples to identify the larvae under a microscope. Once diagnosed, your vet can prescribe a topical spray to kill the harvest mites and if necessary provide treatment to resolve itching and skin infection.Tel: 01403 791011. www.maltmancosham.co.uk Please mention SOUTHWATER Life when responding to adverts

BUSINESS TAX

C H A N G E S T O VAT I N O C T O B E R QUESTION:

I

’ve heard there are changes to VAT coming in October, what does this mean for my business?

ANSWER:

A

new domestic reverse charge will take effect in October 2019 and aims to tackle Missing Trader intra-Community (MTIC)

fraud.

Key features of the new rules are: • Applies only to construction services • Affects standard 20% and reduced-rated 5% supplies • Applies to ‘specified services’ that fall under CIS reporting • Only affects ‘specified supplies’ made between VAT registered businesses. • The whole supply is subject to the reverse charge if an invoice has partial CIS • Account for VAT in the normal way if you are making the supply to a consumer • Sub-contractors are likely to become VAT repayment traders Work on new build dwellings is zero-rated and will not be affected regardless of who the customer is. A business making supplies as a sub-contractor to a VAT registered main contractor would not charge VAT. When you make a supply of standard or reduced-rated construction services direct to consumers, the reverse charge does not apply and you must charge and account for VAT in the normal way.

If you are on the flat rate scheme, you should not include reverse charge supplies in your flat rate turnover. If you receive any reverse charge supplies whilst on the flat rate scheme, these should be dealt with outside the scheme. This means that you account for the VAT to HMRC, but will be able to credit yourself with the input tax (as long as you are fully taxable). HMRC have said they will apply a soft touch approach towards errors for the first 6 months whilst traders get used to the changes and they have now published further detailed guidance on 7 June 2019 – VAT: domestic reverse charge for building and construction services. Tax Adept offers a range of services which are specifically designed to help you and your business.
