The CIO will undertake a license to operate the LCC for 125 years and the Laurie Apted Building for the length of the current lease. Initially, 4 SPC Councillors will be on the CIO Board of Trustees. Additional trustees will be invited from the local community. Infinity Gymnastics is the first licensee of the new operating structure of the LCC using the main hall and will work with other community groups using the main hall. CROWDFUNDING FOR PROJECTS The window is now open for community groups to put forward new initiatives and projects they would like to receive funding for from West Sussex Crowd
A
crowdfunding programme launched in May 2018 has seen more than 100 community-led projects in West Sussex hit their target and the window is now open until Thursday 13 February for community groups to put forward new initiatives and projects they would like to receive funding for. The West Sussex Crowd, run in partnership by West Sussex County Council and civic crowdfunding website www.spacehive.com/movement/westsussexcrow d, invites communities to come together and propose ideas to regenerate their local areas. Since its launch, more than 2,800 local people, businesses, district/borough and town/parish councils have backed projects across the county, collectively raising over £750,000 and showing the strength of community buy-in for their ideas. Duncan Crow, Cabinet Member for Fire & Rescue and Communities, said: “This grant funding is all about supporting community projects, strengthening communities and our councillors working with their communities to help generate support for key projects. “We are thrilled that 107 successful projects have hit their target with many more on the way. These diverse and extraordinary projects will strengthen local places and make West Sussex an even greater place to live, work and enjoy.” Alongside money raised by outside donations through the West Sussex Crowd, the county council can also pledge to crowdfunding campaigns for projects which will have real impact in their local area. Typically, pledges range from £1000 - £5000. Previous projects

which have received funding include: Friends of Downsbrook Forest School raised over £12,000, including a £6,000 county council pledge, from 51 backers to develop a community cabin to allow more people to engage with nature. The Apuldram Centre near Chichester raised over £10,000, of which £2,500 was pledged by the county council, from 75 backers for a new transit van so they can support more adults with learning disabilities to participate in real life work experience. Grandads Front Room in Bognor Regis raised over £9,000, including a county council pledge of £2,053, from 123 backers for a new allotment space, equipment and tools, bringing more local people together. Chris Gourlay, Founder and CEO of Spacehive, said: “Spacehive are delighted to be working in partnership with West Sussex County Council on this exciting initiative which has already inspired hundreds of people and groups from West Sussex to engage in transforming local places. “Our shared mission is to empower as many people as possible to shape their local area. n 16 October volunteer Pippa Howard gave an interesting talk and slide show about the work of PAGEANT (Projects Aiding Gambian Education and Natural Talent). On display were items of African art work. With sales and donations, we were delighted to have assisted with some necessities to aid their work. 30 October and we again welcomed talented Sarah Milner with her violin! She gave us renditions of music and songs, we thoroughly enjoyed the medleys! We laughed playing beetle on 13 November, I mean some of the drawings â&#x20AC;Ś really?! The lucky winners were accorded treats! Beryl presented flowers to Deborah for her upcoming birthday. Three members attended the Co-Op store on 23 November to photograph the 'big' cheque presentation of our Club's inclusion in the Co-Op's Local Community Fund. Cakes were also given to the three recipients. Nick Dowling from the Southwater Community Responders kindly donated their cake to us. On 27 November a pre-Christmas meeting when Simon from our Co-Operative Store joined us. He was thanked for our Christmas Raffle contributions. WSCT Photographer Steve Robarts recorded the big cheque presentation. Two surprise guests were PCSO's Damian and Karen. 4 December and undeterred by cold weather, we enjoyed a lovely Christmas Lunch at The Moorings in Pevensey Bay. Our New Year 2020 meeting on 8 January and we

GREAT EVENTS FOR 2020 Council announces new event experiences for Horsham in 2020

nce again, Horsham residents and visitors can look forward to a vibrant town centre programme of over 150 free events, markets, concerts and activities throughout 2020 co-ordinated by Horsham District Council and its many and varied commercial and community partners. The legacy of 2019’s Horsham District Year of Culture tees up an even more diverse set of events that seek to attract visitors from every sector of the community, engaging with increasing numbers of groups and local businesses. The primary purpose of the Council’s support is the economic bonus gained from increased footfall and publicity for the town, whilst enabling many business partners to use the town to achieve their own objectives, generating mutual benefits along the way. A central feature of this year’s events programme will see an increasing focus on sustainability in terms of both content and awareness of the core issues, with the Council working closely with local partners in the field including Kinder Living, Sussex Green Living and others. Individual event highlights this year include

Horsham’s starring role in the national programme of Good Friday Passion Plays entitled ‘One Good Friday 2020’ led by Horsham Churches Together and a re-energised town wide music festival on Easter Monday called ‘Horsham Sounds’ led by a consortium of community partners. For the first May bank holiday of the year, there will be a full weekend of entertainment. As part of a national celebration of the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War in Europe Horsham will be hosting ‘Horsham’s VE75 Weekend’, including The Broadwood Day of Dance and Horsham’s Bus Rally. Friday’s VE Bank Holiday on 8 May gives a one off opportunity for the whole community to come together to remember the bittersweet joy of peace felt on 8 May 1945. Already working with QM Studios and Age UK, Horsham District Council are inviting more community groups to step forward to play a part in a special day which will include ‘Winston Churchill’, an ‘East’ Street Party and a 16 piece ‘Glen Miller’ style band finale. Following their successful introduction in 2019 as part of the Year of Culture, the Spanish festival ‘Feria de Horsham’ returns as does an

extension of the Caribbean Day to include Latin America called ‘Carnivale Horsham’ in 2020. The ever popular French Fest will also return. Later in the year, September’s food and drink weekend returns with Saturday’s ‘The New Big Nibble’, with an increased emphasis on it being a local food show as well as a market place. Sunday’s Little Nibble is being rebranded as ‘The Future Food Show’ with all sorts of healthy and alternative food options on display. Horsham AmeriCARna is set to take over the town centre and Hop Oast Park & Ride with more ‘cruise throughs’ by a greater variety of vehicles. Plans for Christmas 2020 are to be confirmed and will be subject to evaluations of 2019’s activities and 2020’s available resources. These highlights are in addition to an amazing variety of other events, markets, bandstand concerts, town trails, exhibitions and street entertainment that all go on throughout the year. Commenting on the events programme for 2020, Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for the Local Economy Cllr Paul Clarke said: “I am delighted that we are set to welcome such a broad scope of events and activities to Horsham for 2020. It is good to see so many popular ones making a return, but I am also really pleased that we will be hosting so many new events which are making their debuts this year. “More than ever, I believe we have something

This event first ran in 2006 over two days with 12 Ferraris each day. Over time the event grew to a peak at Piazza Italia X in 2016 with displays of some 101 Ferraris, bandstand and balcony Romeo & Juliet performances, Gladiators, Granny Tourismo antics, Italian Job Mini cavalcades and many top quality operatic arias along the way. Unfortunately, many of the voluntary and commercial partners that made up so much of the content of this event are not now available. This has led to the event organisers taking the decision to terminate the event while it retains such a great reputation, allowing available resources to focus on a wider town programme with the many new events.

STICKY CHINESE CHICKEN WINGS This scrumptious supper dish is inspired by last month’s Chinese New Year festival Preparation time: 15 minutes Cooking time: 30 minutes + 50 minutes Serves: 4-6 fkdobafbkqp=
1.5 kg chicken wings 2 level tbsp baking POWDER ¾ tsp table salt ½ tsp pepper 3 spring onions, chopped Sticky Chinese Sauce 1 tsp vegetable oil pinch of salt and pepper 1 thumb-sized piece of ginger peeled and finely chopped 1 tbsp sweet chilli sauce 2 tbsp honey
4 tbsp dark brown sugar 5 tbsp dark soy sauce 1 tsp lemon grass paste (you can buy this in tubes) 2 cloves garlic peeled and minced 1 tbsp sesame seeds (lightly toasted) jbqela= Preheat the oven to 120C / 100C Fan Gas ½. Place a rack on a large baking tray. Cut each wing at the joint so you have a mini wing and a drumette. Dry these with kitchen roll (they mustn't be too damp, then place in a large bowl and add the baking powder, salt and pepper. Mix to combine. Remove the chicken and place in a single layer on the rack, skin side up. Discard the remaining coating mixture. Place the chicken on the lower shelf of the oven for 30 minutes to dry. After 30 minutes, turn the oven up to 220C / 200 Fan / Gas 6, rotate the tray and place on the middle shelf in the oven for 45-50 minutes until the wings are golden and crispy. Remove from the oven to cool slightly. Place all of the sauce ingredients into a saucepan, stir and bring to the boil. Allow to simmer for 5-10 minutes until the sauce reduces and thickens slightly. Turn off the heat. Place the cooked wing pieces in a large bowl and carefully pour over the warm sticky sauce. Mix to combine, then serve topped with chopped spring onions and some toasted sesame seeds.

orsham Table Tennis Club in conjunction with Horsham District Council is geared up to offer more opportunities to cater for players of all types and levels in 2020. The New Year will see the introduction of a new one-to-one coaching service to help fast-track improvement. The details for this and other coaching session opportunities can be viewed in the ‘Programme’ section of www.horshamtabletennisclub.co.uk Additionally, a new starter course TTKidz, is also set to begin in early February and will be run out of the club’s satellite venue at Collyer’s on Friday nights. TTKidz is an entry route for youngsters into a more widely growing junior coaching and competition offer. Other sessions for older and more established youngsters are running on Mondays and Wednesdays. The Greenway Academy based table tennis group has grown its coach and volunteer ranks significantly over the last 12 months having received great support from Table Tennis England and Horsham District Council, and its expanded team is looking to make further progress in engaging more players to one of the most accessible sports available. Over October and November the club was one of the first to run the new governing body promoted TTKidz eight-week programme, aimed at engaging 6-11 year olds. Some 28 youngsters took up the initiative, making for the biggest initial programme in the whole country. No bigger expression of progress can be seen than the club fielding nine National Cadet League under 15 teams and four teams entering the under 18 National Junior League, running at Sussex University, Brighton. The club’s matchplay nights on Friday evenings at Collyer’s College continue to offer an excellent opportunity for players of all ages and abilities to compete informally in a large facility that allows lots of players to play lots of matches. On the adult front, the club continues to be proactive with the ladies (14 years plus) coaching programme attracting a strong following. Sessions will re-start at Collyer’s College on 10 January. An inter-business competition is being planned to run in February to raise funds for local charity Set4Success, which supports talented young sportspeople to achieve their dreams. Horsham District Council’s Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture Cllr Jonathan Chowen commented: “There’s a place for everyone in Horsham Table Tennis Club, so as a new decade opens why not give table tennis a go?”

HELPING YOUR BODY TO DETOXIFY
M
any new year resolutions involve some form of dieting. But equally as important is detoxifying the body of its impurities and getting rid of all those nasty toxins that can prevent it working the way it should. Detoxification refers to the body’s natural ability to convert potentially toxic substances into harmless particles that it then removes without us knowing. Our bodies do such an amazing job of this (through the liver in particular) that you might not realise that we’re constantly surrounded by potentially toxic substances. However, sometimes our bodies can get a little overwhelmed if we don’t take care of ourselves. Common signs and symptoms of the detoxification process not working properly may include: • Constipation/diarrhoea • Food allergies and sensitivities • Skin issues • Asthma • Inability to lose weight • Infertility • Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) • Depression • Headaches • Poor memory and concentration Toxins can come from a number of sources including: pesticides in food, alcohol, poor air quality, parabens found in creams and make-up to name just a few. Before embarking on a detox programme – especially those quick fix ones – it’s always a good idea to contact your healthcare practitioner. They’ll advise you on the best way of detoxing your body, for if you do it too quickly, you could release too many toxins in a short period of time, which can also be harmful to the body. However, for a gentler approach to detoxification, we can make subtle changes to our

diets which are easy to incorporate into our daily routines. Such changes include: 1. Increase the intake of dark green leafy and cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, rocket, Brussel sprouts, cabbage, kale, turnip – they contain beneficial substances which support liver detoxification processes. 2. Eat more fresh or frozen berries such blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, strawberries which are rich in antioxidants. 3. Drink more water as it’s needed to flush out toxins – aim for 6-8 glasses a day. 4. Increase fibre intake to 30grams a day to optimise toxin elimination. 5. Include a variety of spices in cooking such as rosemary, coriander and turmeric. 6. Reduce the amount of processed foods, ready meals and foods high in sugar eaten. These have been linked to chronic diseases, such as heart disease, cancer, and diabetes which harm the organs that play an important role in the detoxification processes. 7. Cut down on alcohol and cigarettes as they are especially damaging to the liver and lungs, our detoxification organs. The above should all help the body with its dayto-day detoxification processes, and let’s not forget that regular exercise and good quality sleep will also help the body to detoxify. In addition, there are also a number of natural supplements that can be taken to support detoxification, but you should always ask your nutritional therapist before taking these. We are working throughout West Sussex area, supporting those in the community who may be experiencing social isolation or very early stages of dementia. Our aim is to address and improve social interaction, reduce isolation, exclusion and to support them to continue living well at home and remain active members of their community. The Tapestry Lunch Club offers high quality day care for small groups of older people. Within the supportive environment of the Tapestry Lunch Club, time and again guests gain confidence, becoming revitalised in the process, giving time and space where they can engage in valued and valuable social roles and connectedness. Friends are made, laughter exchanged, and experiences shared. Our care model is a bit different from other care providers in the area. We employ fully vetted and trained hosts who run the Lunch Club from their own homes – providing morning and afternoon refreshments, a hot, home cooked lunch and optional activities during the day. This provides a more intimate and less overwhelming environment for our guests to share companionship, stories, memories and laughter with each other. Each host has a maximum of 4 guests per day, and using their own private car will provide transport for each guest - collecting and returning from their homes within a 5-mile radius of the host’s home - which will ensure time spent in the car for

W
hy core exercises are important. We know that getting fit is important for a healthy life. Often, we equate fitness with running, cycling, walking or some other form of exercise. But there's one aspect of fitness that is almost always overlooked; our core muscles. Whenever I talk about building muscle everyone pictures someone at a weight bench pumping iron until their biceps bulge out of their shirts. But strengthening and toning your muscles can be much more subtle. And even a small amount of work on your core strength can dramatically improve your overall fitness and wellbeing. What Are Your Core Muscles? Your core muscles form a ring around the middle of your body. Most people think of the six pack muscles in the abdomen, but the core includes a range of muscles in your sides and back as well. Their job is to keep the top and bottom halves of your body connected together whilst allowing them to move independently. They form a strong foundation that the majority of your other muscles depend upon when you move your body. When Do I Use My Core Muscles? Practically every movement you make and every position you put your body into involves your core muscles. They are really important. Bending over to pick something up, twisting to look behind you and sitting up in bed are more obvious moments your core is activated. But running, walking, sitting in a chair and even standing still all rely on core strength. Without it the top half of your body would simply flop over. What Are the Benefits of Core Strength? Building a strong core provides a firm and flexible support for every activity your body performs. The stability provided gives you better balance and better posture which in turn helps prevent falls and injuries in your day-to-day life. The support from your core muscles takes the
strain away from your skeleton and helps hold it in place alleviating some forms of back pain, stiffness and soreness when you move your body. Any time you move whether it's for exercise or doing the housework or gardening, a strong core will help you perform better and reduce muscle fatigue in the other parts of your body by giving them a firm base to attach to. How Can I Build My Core Strength? One of the best things about core strength is that you don't need a gym or expensive equipment to improve it. There are lots of exercises you can do at home. Make sure you seek medical advice before attempting any new exercise regime. Most people think of sit ups as the prime core exercise. I advise people not to do sit ups as they are not particularly effective and the continual flexing of the base of your spine can lead to lower back injuries. My top tips are planks, leg raises and mountain climbers. If you're not sure what these are have a chat with your local personal trainer or gym instructor, or search on YouTube for easy-tofollow tutorials. Take your core strength seriously and it will improve every aspect of your fitness as well as provide the central support essential for your body. By Robert Grant

It is possible to reduce the stress associated with visiting the vets in the following ways: • Desensitise your cat to the cat basket by getting it out a few days before, allowing your cat to explore it. Place a comfortable bed in there. Catnip and edible treats may encourage them to use it. • A top opening cat basket, and wrapping your cat in a towel, makes getting them in and out easier. Ensure the basket is large enough that they can turn around but small enough to make them feel secure. Cover the basket with a blanket or towel. • Ensure the bedding within the basket smells of home and is not freshly washed. Rub a cloth on your cat’s face and then around the basket or use the synthetic feline facial pheromone, Feliway. A piece of clothing from your cat’s favourite person may also be comforting. • One cat per basket, even cats that are normally sociable with each other may redirect their anger towards the nearest target in stressful situations. • Avoid feeding your cat directly before the car journey as this may result in nausea or vomiting. PRELOVED PROM SALE RETURNS

illais School Parent Teacher Association (PTA) is presenting their 5th Preloved Prom Dress Sale in February. The sale offers the opportunity to buy and sell Prom Dresses and Accessories at reduced prices, to meet a growing need for alternatives to full price items. Fran Northern of the PTA explains: ‘Our Preloved Prom Sale is a special event that offers girls an affordable means of buying prom dresses and associated accessories. The Sale is gaining in popularity each year, with the quality of the dresses being of a very high standard. We are delighted that Southwater-based Company, Prom Boutique, will be attending the event for the 2nd year running, with a selection of sample dresses at much discounted price’. Millais PTA is encouraging former students and other residents of the area to get involved by ordering a Sellers Pack and bringing along their prom items for the PTA to try and sell on their behalf. If an item is sold, the seller will receive the majority of the sale price with a donation of 20% going to towards the PTA fundraising for Millais School. Good Friday 10 April – One Good Friday Horsham Horsham’s Passion Play will be part of a national programme of performances of the Wintershall play on Good Friday 2020. A new exhibition at Horsham Museum and Art Gallery, Boom and Bust: Horsham after the Great War, will look at the developments and events that took place during the 1920s, and how they affected the town and the people that lived here. A Flock of Sparrows – celebrating the life of Dr Geoffrey Sparrow; a comic genius 21st Dec 2019 to 22nd Feb 2020 Dr Geoffrey Sparrow arrived in Horsham 100 years ago, setting up in practice. Along with his medical skill he brought great artistic talent and flair for capturing life as lived in the District in the 1930-60s. His genius was capturing in a few strokes, on the back of napkins, envelopes and the more formal painting, the humour of life. He follows in the tradition of Rowlandson, but without the cutting edge. John R Abbey - Horsham's Greatest Book Collector 10th Jan 2020 to 28th Mar 2020 For over 30 years one time Storrington resident Major J R Abbey built up one of the greatest collections of books based on those attributes. This small exhibition celebrates his passion with books and photographs. Major Abbey died on Christmas eve 1969. Causeway House, Horsham: 600 Years and Counting 17th Jan 2020 to 21st Mar 2020 Now home to Horsham Museum and Art Gallery this house began its life 600 years ago as an office, workshop for a medieval merchant, later in middle age becoming a tailors home, before in its more mature years helping out in the war effort, 1940s and 50s civil defence rather than Home Guard. Its rich and varied life has been etched in to its “skin and bones”.
