As far back as we can remember, color has played a significant roll in communication, psychology and even physical health. Color has a lot of power. Your choice of color can effect people and set moods in many ways. Children lean color at an early age, but they don’t learn about the theory of color. If you as a child what the opposite of black it, they will call out white. But if you ask them what the opposite of red is, they look dumbfounded. With this project I intend to help children deepen their knowledge of colors and the theory behind it. My design is intended to be used in classroom settings. The grade levels of choice would be possibly Pre-Kindergarten, but mainly Kindergarten and first grade. Homeroom and art teachers would be able to use this as a tool to explain some aspects of color theory without having to use paint to mix colors.

As a visual artist and an art teacher, I feel that the use or lack of color of color heavily influence how a person interprets a piece of artwork, weather is be a painting, a poster or magazine add. It is very to use color to “speak” to your audience. If you were to design a poster for any type of young children’s event, you would want to use bright and vibrant colors to catch the young persons attention. I plan on making a color wheel that allows you to make primary and secondary color by using colored translucent film layered on top of each other. The bottom layer primary colors would be fastened to some sort of white backing. A second layer of primary colors would be centered added on and would be allowed to rotate. When lined up, red on red, yellow on yellow and blue on blue, the primary colors would be visible. When the circle was rotated, the primary colors of the top wheel would fall on a different primary color and produce a secondary color. To control the rotation of the wheel there would be a pair of 6-sided dice each with two of each of the primary colors. The children would roll the dice and have to rotate the wheel to the corresponding color. The will tell what color the dice made, if it is a primary color or a secondary color and why. There will be an opportunity for 3 points for each question provided that the answer all three pieces of the question correctly.
GAME RULES
# of Players: 2 teams of 3+ Explain: Primary colors are sets of colors that can be combined to make a useful range of colors. (Red, Yellow, Blue) A secondary color is a color made by mixing two primary colors. (Orange, Green, Purple) Game play: Team 1 will roll the dice. The person who rolled the dice will have to recreate the color on the color wheel and rotate the arrow to point to the color that is to be shown. There are three possible points on each play by answering the following questions: 1. What color has been created. 2. Is it a primary or secondary color? 3. Why is it primary or why is it secondary. One point is awarded for each correct answer. After Team 1 answers the dice are turned over to the second team. Game is over when the first team reaches 30 points.

Group of 13 kindergartners: Game was confusing at 1st. The way the dice are set up when they land there is no clear side to select. Depending on where in the half circle they were sitting the children could see a different color. I had to tell the students what colors to mix. After a couple of rounds most children started to remember what 2 colors mixed together made the secondary color and they also started to remember what where primary and what were secondary colors. Group of 16 1st graders: Same confusion due to the design of the dice. Again, once I started telling students what colors to mix they learned what colors were primary and secondary and what colors needed to be mixed together to create secondary colors. I need to redesign the dice either going to a 6 or 8 sided die so a colors are clearly displayed.
