should have known better. I answered a phone call from Stu Avant.

“Mate, you can be our New Zealand manager,” he said.

“Er. Of what?”

“We’re bringing a couple of bikes to the Timaru classic meeting. You can organise it all from your end.”

“Gee, thanks Stu.” That’s when I should have politely claimed a bad connection, ended the call and taken up knitting.

Anyone who knows Stu, knows that nothing is ever as simple as he sells it.

He told me he and Tom Dermody were bringing over their Suzuki RGB500 and

Tom’s Yamaha YZR500; riders Graeme Crosby and Kevin Magee.

“Dave Reesby from CAMS phoned and asked if we would be interested. I said we would be and you could arrange everything.”

Already Stu was buzzing.

“We’re all up for it. Just an old school weekend. Parade laps then into the bar.

Magee can’t wait. I haven’t told Croz yet but he’ll be there, even if we aren’t paying him.”

That was way back at the start of the year. I checked air freight prices for a couple of bikes, made some motel bookings and talked to Dave and meeting

Then more phone calls from Sydney.

“Mate, Steve Trinder wants to bring his XR23, Pat Hennen’s old bike. and Tom wants to bring his XR69 for Paul Byrne to ride.”

Great. More motel rooms booked.

Then another call.

“Mate, Garry Middleton wants to bring a couple of Gregg Hansford’s old Kawasakis. And a TZ750.”

Great. More juggling of motel bookings.

By now we’re talking a container and speaking to Customs and IRD about carnets, bike values and implications. Life was no longer quite so simple. Arghhh...

Step up Sue. She got Mike Pero on board and now it was the Mike Pero Southern Classic and CAMS had some financial leeway.

And Mike bought a newish TZ250 bike to celebrate. More work for Rod Price.

It was just getting bigger and bigger.

John Boote was on board and Robbie Phillis, plus Jock Woodley and Paul McLachlan.

Then that lively party rabble from up north known as the ‘Lizards’ told me they were riding down to the meeting. Add Lizards Aaron Slight, Richard Scott, Gary Goodfellow and Richard Scoullar to the

A swathe of KTM riders came from all over NZ to take on the first KTM Coast to Coast Adventure Rallye

O

mens are interesting things. I’d heard through the grapevine, as you do, that KTM was about to hold an inaugural Adventure Rallye in New Zealand. Now, naturally as a huge adventure riding fan and KR tester, I was hopeful of doing a least some of the ride. Then, out of the blue, two very cool things happened. The first was Vege (KR publisher) said I was down for the first two days and Rosie (the event

manager from KTM Aussie) emailed to ask my T-shirt size. Yes! I was on the ride with cool goodies. Secondly, when I went to pick up my bike for the ride, the 1190 Adventure had been fully adventure-prepped and had the sexiest set of Workshop Graphics I could ever imagine.

This was all a bit more than a positive omen... I was beginning to feel like the chosen one. All I had to do now was ride my very sexy, blinged up 1190 down to Papamoa Beach for the start.

Like that was going to be a hardship...

Kawasaki’s dual-purpose KLR650 is simple and reliable but won’t set your pants on fire... and we quite like it like that.

T

he Kawasaki KLR650 is something of a dinosaur in the motorcycling world – it seems to have been around forever except, in the KLR’s case, it never died out... and for good reason. Adventure riders will certainly know of the KLR650’s reputation as being a bullet proof, inexpensive world tourer that offers the best bang for buck in the market place. Yes, the Suzuki DR650SE is a little cheaper and lighter with more ability in the tight stuff, but it doesn’t come with a huge fuel tank as standard and, just as importantly, an excellent fairing and two decent headlights. In the days of 150hp adventure bikes, the KLR nicely bridges the gap between these intimidating (for some) monsters and the genuine light weight trail/dirt bikes. It’s an evolutionary niche the KLR has all to itself.

The KLR650 engine is a single cylinder, double overhead camshaft, liquid-cooled unit with a five-speed gearbox. It is 651cc and has a well over-square bore and stroke of 100mm x 83mm. There is only one, big long radiator mounted on the left side and it has an automatic fan for added cooling in slow going. The fuelling is via a Keihin CVK 40mm carburettor with handle bar mounted choke lever for convenience and of course electric start. It is a solid performing engine, and perfect for long distance adventure riding, but it will never set hearts aflame in the excitement department. What it will do is this; provide you with a seamless, torquey and userfriendly power delivery that gets the job done quietly and efficiently, eating up miles with deceptive ease, day after day, week after week and so on.

There is a reason why so many of these things travel the world. It’s a rugged and simple machine and at 100 to 110km/h the engine is in the sweet spot, just loping along effortlessly. Top speed is around 160km/h. The only real issue with the motor is the five-speed gearbox and tall

first gear which means the clutch gets a hard time in tight riding. The clutch fades when given a workout or even when manoeuvring a lot. While in some respects the torquey, lazy power is suited to the wide-ratio gearbox, a lower first gear from a six speed gearbox would be better in tighter off-road terrain and make acceleration a little more sprightly by closing up the other ratios... but not necessarily making it go any faster overall because it just runs out of puff. I liked the engine and felt it suited the character of the machine as a whole.

Our red test model was a handsome beast and I liked the overall feel of the ergonomics. It has an excellent, sit up, commanding riding position with high straight bars and generous hand guards that offer great weather protection. The seat is long and thickly padded, but I felt the foam was a little on the soft side and might sag out over time; however it was comfortable enough for the duration of this test. The rear carrier is a great size, made from strong-looking plastic and has the tool kit built in to the top. I can’t decide if this is a good idea or not.

Learner machine, commuter and potential rat bike or bobber, Suzuki’s TU250X comes under Peter Elliott’s scrutinous gaze.

I

n its base configuration, bog standard out of the box, this little Suzuki TU250X looks like a wee cracker. Its retro styling is a nod back to seventies cool, even down to the wide, square brake pedal with rounded knurls and a narrow gauge gear lever. I love the candy gold tank, black shiny guards and chrome wheel rims. Very 1972.

I was reminded by a friend who like his ratbikes – the rustier and worn the better – that the Suzuki TU250X was actually a cool little bike in it’s own right, but I suspect much of this was down to the fact that many a bobber and stripped back little street cruiser has started life from this base machine.

All the good basic detail is there, a single cylinder, 249cc air-cooled, fourstroke motor, coupled with the SDTV (Suzuki Dual Throttle Valve) injection system, which delivers a solid, if not lightning fast, commuter machine.

The split seat looks kind of cool, but at a 770mm seat height is a little close to the ground for my longer legs, and generally I found the bike very compact. This makes it an enticing prospect for learner or returning riders, where its directly aimed.

The wheelbase is 1375mm and it’s a nimble little traffic bike, with slightly narrow bars that make lane-splitting a less fraught exercise than it can be on bigger machines. It is light too, at only 148kg – this is an easy pick up, if it gets

knocked over in town.

Taken out for a blast in traffic, I had a ball, zapping comfortably about with plenty of inner city zip. But if you are heading onto Auckland’s motorways it may take a little more fortitude. It will do 100km/h with a decent handful, but with a weighty rider, a dash of uphill, and a stroppy Auckland afternoon headwind, that drops to about 80-85 and uses way more throttle to hold it there. I managed to get the bike out to 130km/h on a short patch of motorway, but that was absolutely top whack. It’s no racer, but it will deliver you safely on and off the motorways and to be fair, that’s all it needs to do.

Suzuki’s of the seventies used to have names, like ‘Stinger’, ‘Gaucho’ and ‘Rebel’ and I think the TU250X is desperately in need of a name, rather than a model number that makes it sound like... well... a dog biscuit, frankly.

There were a couple of issues which got my attention fairly quickly. On the test bike there was a pronounced vertical bouncing vibration of the front wheel, of about 1 to 2cms at 50km/h, but I suspect the front wheel had flicked a balance weight off. It evened out above and below, but at commute speed was annoying.

The other niggle was that under braking the front disc pulsed, with feedback to the lever, and I had a look at the disc surface but found no obvious high or flat spot.

Fickle weather is always part of the equation as spring clashes with summer in the Deep South and this year the weather played hardball at the 2016 Burt Munro Challenge.

D

espite hail, sleet, driving rain and strong winds, the eleventh running of the Burt Munro Challenge saw record crowds at the Classic Motorcycle Mecca Museumsponsored NZ Hillclimb Champs up the daunting Bluff Hill.

Times were never going to worry the records in wet conditions but the riders still left nothing in the bag as they threw themselves at the hill which has been challenging them since 1927. Jason Feaver scored the quickest time on his Honda CRF450R as the hard-hitting superbikes struggled to get their power down on the tight and bumpy hill. The fact that road repairs had eliminated the spring that used to trickle across on a blind bend previously was not noticed by the riders due to the road staying wet and greasy all day long.

From the hill, it was over to the Honda NZ Super-X Champs at Winton, where Ben Townley showed he is back on form, winning the main game ahead of Josh Coppins and Cody Cooper. Despite the event only a short drive away from rainy Bluff, it was held in dry conditions, making it a spectacle for the crowd and drumming up more interest in Friday evening’s upcoming beach racing.

Rising talent from Oparau

O

ne of the rising talents in New Zealand Junior Motocross is Oparau’s James Scott. After wrapping up the 13-16 years 85cc national title at the New Zealand Junior Motocross Championship in Hawkes Bay in April, James and father Matt boarded a plane bound for Belgium to begin preparation for the 2016 Honda 150 European Motocross Championship.

This is a single make five round championship run in conjunction with the World MXGP series at tracks around Europe, run with the backing of Honda Europe, and spearheaded by Irish exGrand Prix legend Gordon Crockard who has the role of both coach and event manager for the series. The series is based on a partnership between MXGP organisers Youthstream and Honda to nurture and develop the next generation of GP riders. James was lucky enough to secure a seat in the 2016 series, while the make and model of machinery were not his preferred option, the series offered the best opportunity for a taste of Grand Prix level motocross, and on a level playing field with all bikes being identical and controlled, no modifications permitted.

With limited experience on the Honda 150 machine, Scott had a steep learning curve to get used to the bike in a matter of weeks before he was thrown in the deep end. While in Europe he was fortunate enough to link up with Kiwi MX legend Ben Townley and his family while he was making his MXGP comeback, and was able to help James along on his journey into a completely new world. While the results don’t necessarily reflect his ability and speed shown over the three rounds he was able to compete in, the

experience bodes well for the future, and he demonstrated to the MXGP paddock that he is the next rising star from the bottom of the world, and as he progresses into the National 125 class, there are opportunities to compete in Europe again in 2017 in the EMX125 category.

Tell us about your experience living and racing in Europe.

My first round was in Teutschenthal, Germany, which was a hard pack track that I knew would suit my riding style.

I ended up 5th overall for the weekend with some small crashes and bike issues letting me down but it was a good start to racing on the world stage.

In between the 150 rounds, I had quite a big break and it was good to ride Lommel and get used to riding sand. It was really good to be able to watch some of the best

riders in the world too and I was living with one of them - Ben Townley. Living with BT was a really big help for me being over by myself for quite a while it was good to have Ben and his family looking after me.

Round 2 was in England which was a race I was really looking forward to and for me it started off great leading the first half of the lap and then getting a flat tyre which caused me to DNF that race. In the second race, I got another good start, led for a few laps and then got passed and finished second (behind reigning champion Emil Weckman).

Round 3 was in Lommel, which was basically my home track by then. I was excited to see what I could do but during training that week before Lommel I had a small crash and ended up breaking my wrist but didn’t know so just carried on.

I made it to Lommel and did two laps in qualifying and crashed and dislocated my shoulder. Then I knew it was going to be home time with two rounds to go which really sucked but I had a really good time while I was over there and learnt so much.

After your season was cut short at Lommel forcing you to return home, tell us about what you’ve been up to since then.

When I got home we sorted out my shoulder and it was about three weeks off the bike. When I first got to ride my new 2017 KTM 125, I had a really sore wrist and we went and got it checked and came home with a cast on which once again sucked because I was off the bike for another five weeks. After that five weeks I was back on the bike and definitely ready to go again. It was so good to be back riding after my injuries.

You recently battled with current MX1 champion Cody Cooper in the 125 class at Waikato Champs. Tell us about that.

Yeah my first race back was at the Waikato Champs at North King Country’s track. I rode Juniors and then Seniors, which gave me a chance to line up against one of the best riders in New Zealand; Cody Cooper. It was an awesome experience getting to race him on his old CR125 in the National 125 class.

What are your plans for 2017?

2017 will be quite a big year for me.

I’ll have the Woodville Grand Prix, then four rounds of New Zealand Senior Nationals, and hopefully go back to Europe for a couple rounds on a 125 in the EMX125 class.

Understanding how to control a motorcycle isn’t dark magic, trials riding can teach you the skills to truly master your machine.

I

am a motorcycle rider and have been a keen observer of motorcycles for many years. It all began for me, as it did for so many riders – ogling something that had the thrust of a rocket, the hip of the rockstar and awesome ‘pulling’ power. The speed and danger added sometimes fearsome thrills, particularly with the advent of the fiery Japanese machines before frames, suspension and brakes improved to the same levels. I remember being so enamoured of the 1972 Yamaha RD 350 in its candy apple red, with chrome pipes and guards, as to almost mess my pants.

For years I dreamed of modern bikes, but they were always too expensive and far off, so I rode a post-war CZ175 until it dropped dead, then a succession of old wrecks and Vespas. It was around 1976 when I was first introduced to trials bikes and fell in love all over again. The Montesa Cota 247 and Ossa 175 were the the hot machines of the day and I eagerly went off to the Pioneer Motorcycle Club trials all over the Canterbury district, ogling bikes from afar with little hope of ever attaining one.

Many years later I bought a Yamaha TY250 and finally learnt a little about clutch and throttle control and balance.

But deciding I could tackle a very bouldery river before mastering basics brought me firmly, and bloodily, to reality.

About ten years ago I got into trials properly, joining the Hamilton MC for trials, and slowly progressed to the

magnificently ordinary rider I am today.

I have reached static balance perhaps, as I slowly improve, the years slowly decrease my ability, it’s sad but inevitable.

But part of the joy of motorcycling is seeing others grab the opportunity to learn about motorcycle control. If there is one major lesson that trials riding imparts above all others it is this: ceasing to be a passenger. It’s amazing to watch what happens to the mind when one removes the seat!

Whilst the Auckland group of trials riders all have a strong interest in growing the sport, it has become increasingly clear that trials training generates sound control principles of the motorcycle.

This translates to every other form of riding. Simple skills such as tight turns; slipping the clutch and riding the rear brake, allowing the bike to pivot round in its own length, co-ordinate the hand, eye and balance skills that lead to greatly increased confidence and understanding of what the machine will do.

Learning to wheelstand without the use of the throttle, just by utilising weight transfer and suspension, is easily and simply taught on a trials bike.

These skills, and more, all help with riders remaining ‘feet downward’ when any machine does something unexpected.

Basically, we set up trials training areas at every training trial where youngsters and novices of all ages can start on very, very simple courses and proceed to riding social grade trials by the end of day one.

I

t’s an international class event and it typically attracts international-class talent. So when a couple of the individuals who were Team New Zealand riders for the 2016 Motocross of Nations campaign in Italy in September were also the main winners at the big annual postChristmas Honda Summercross near Whakatane in December, there weren’t too many raised eyebrows.

Mount Maunganui’s Cody Cooper and Hamilton’s Josiah Natzke were the two stand-out individuals at the twoday motocross extravaganza, while

fellow Kiwi internationals Rhys Carter, Ben Townley, Hamish Harwood, Kayne Lamont, Courtney Duncan, Trent Collins, Maximus Purvis, Cameron Negus and Darryll King also showed their world class pedigree.

With a slightly changed format from previous years –the seniors racing on day one (immediately after Boxing Day) and the juniors on day two – it meant the main spectator focus was on the first day of action, although there was still a large crowd that stayed around to witness junior heroes such as Collins, Purvis, Tauranga’s Josh Tredinnick, Kotemaori’s Reece Lister, Taihape’s Hayden Smith,

Oparau’s James Scott, Matamata’s Brodie Connolly, Wellsford’s Wyatt Collins and Waitoki’s Cole Davies strut their stuff the next day.

The day two crowd was also privileged to see talented Australian brothers Adam and Noah Smerdon celebrate junior class wins as they finished ahead of Kiwi heroes Trent Duggan (of Mount Maunganui) and Thomas Watts (of Wairoa) respectively.

But it was the five-race win streak by Honda star Cooper that perhaps grabbed the most attention.

Balance shafts in a two-stroke? That’s right, and we reckon KTM has made the two-stroke option even more appealing.

K

R was at the running-in of KTM’s Road Show test bikes a few months back, when they were straight out of the crate. While this is an exciting time for a tester, with a fleet of brand new bikes to throw a leg over and put some miles on, it is not always a time that you ride the bikes at their best. Sure, you get an appreciation for the updates and changes and frankly we were blown away by the smoothness of the new counter-balanced KTM two-stroke engines.

However, two-stroke bikes are seldom jetted correctly straight from the box and, like all new machines, they need a little fettling and personalising to be at their best for any given rider.

Enter Jake Whiteman’s own KTM 250XC. Jake’s machine is not completely standard having had the suspension re-valved at the front and rear and it’s had the jetting tidied up.

He has also fitted the more aggressive power valve spring to suit his racing requirements.

Power wise I was most impressed with Jake’s XC. The jetting is crisp and the power very strong throughout the rev range – a marked improvement from the bike straight out of the crate. It is torquey and responsive; always feeling like it is in the power, but with no real feeling of a powerband.

For slow work and getting traction the engine works great and it doesn’t stall easily. Then, when the terrain opens up, hang on because this baby hauls arse up top too. I was sure prior to riding Jake’s 250 that the 300XC had

the better engine. They are both all new with a counter-balancer and very smooth, but now I’m thinking the 250 might have the edge.

The new XC models handle brilliantly with almost-intuitive, agile and very accurate steering that is also stable and quite balanced out of the box. They are however a little on the soft side suspension-wise for larger and or faster riders. So, for this reason Jake has revalved the shock and forks. In the sand I liked the shock as it held up better in the stroke, then moved smoothly with greater bottoming resistance and better rebound control.

However, I think for hard pack the setting could be too firm initially and perhaps transfer small sharp bumps back to the rider. The forks were not really to my liking though, sitting too high in the stroke and being too firm in the first third of the travel. They gave me arm pump quite quickly, but in their defence they were awesome on big hits and fast whoops.

However, on balance the standard fork setting while being a little soft worked better for me the majority of the time. I hear Jake’s forks have since been re-valved again Like all KTMs the brakes, ergos and general fit and finish are excellent – they really are a class act. For this year though, the all new engine has lifted the two-strokes to another level that is clearly ahead of all opposition.

These are fantastic dirt bikes and crosscountry race bikes in particular. Personally, I see them ahead of the 250 four-stroke brigade, but perhaps I’m a little old-school in my thinking. Anyway, make no mistake about it, this is an exceptional bike.

HONDA CRF JUNIORS

T

he CRF50F has been around unchanged for a long time now with good reason – if it isn’t broke, don’t fix it.

They’re solid performers that are extremely reliable and unbelievably economical. The basic drum brakes work very well with an easy pull for small hands and feet. The auto gearbox is so easy for a learner to ride with, but quite truck like to shift gears for small feet. I think the kickstart only is a plus as a first timer’s bike because a kid probably can’t start it, so there must be an adult present for them to ride.The suspension is great for learner kids on flat-ish paddocks, as is the long, safety-style seat.

RIDING

I was about six when I first started to ride the 50. It was a bit scary at first, but so easy to ride with the low seat that I got the hang of it quickly. It was easy to steer and control. To start with I never changed gears, dad just put it in second and I rode everywhere like that. I can’t think of a better bike to learn on. Dad said it’s good too because its quiet and doesn’t smoke.

he Vespa parent company Piaggio was founded in 1884, when Rinaldo Piaggio started an engineering business dealing in shipping and railways. During the 1930s the company built bombers and seaplanes for the Italian airforce, as well as founding the nation’s first commercial airline. In 1945 the company headquarters were demolished by a combination of allied bombing and German sabotage. After the war the company moved in a different direction. There was a demand for inexpensive two wheeled

70 YEARS OF VESPA transport in war torn Europe, and there was no shortage of engineering skills amongst what was left of the Piaggio workforce to answer the call. The result, designed by an aeronautical engineer, appeared in prototype form in 1945. Without a frame it consisted of a spot-welded steel chassis, bodywork and leg shields, and a 98cc single cylinder two-stroke engine.

The motor, which drove the rear wheel, was encased under the seat, and so was the fuel tank. This gave the machine a ‘step-through’ appearance, making it easier for both male and female riders to wear more

conventional clothing than the usual motorcycle gear.

Nothing quite like it had been seen before. The radical new two-wheeler, called the Vespa, took its name from the Italian for wasp, maybe because of the wasp-like buzz of the small two-stroke motor. Vespa went into production in 1946.

In 1947 10,000 Vespas were sold, by 1956 this had reached a million, and by 2000 15 million. Such was the demand that Vespas were made under license in Britain, Germany, France, and Spain as well as Italy. This would later extend to India, Brazil and Indonesia.

Critics who said that the Vespa

wasn’t a real motorcycle, but simply a fad that would fade as soon as the demand for simple commuter transport disappeared, were wrong on both counts. I suppose whether it is a real motorcycle is debatable, although it’s questionable if that’s what it was meant to be in the first place. By the year 2000 Piaggio had become the third largest producer of motor driven two-wheelers in the world, which suggests that a lot of people who would probably not ride a motorcycle were riding Vespas. Also the need for people to look for reliable commuter transport,
